Summary
Continuing Saint Cyril of Jerusalem’s twelfth catechesis, the lecture examines Isaiah’s prophecy that a child would be born and a Son given to humanity. The titles Wonderful Counselor and Mighty God reveal the child born in Bethlehem as the incarnate Wisdom, Word, and Creator rather than a merely human ruler. The Davidic genealogies of the Theotokos and Christ confirm Isaiah’s prophecy that the Messiah would establish David’s throne in justice forever.

We are still in the twelfth catechesis of Saint Cyril, which concerns the Incarnation of the Son of God—His taking flesh and becoming man. We have reached paragraph twenty-four. As I told you last time, it speaks of His birth from a Virgin. This is the third and final subject examined in the twelfth catechesis. “But the Jews are deeply troubled by these things. Isaiah foresaw this also, saying...” “For a child has been born to us—not to them—and a Son has been given to us.” And note that He was first the Son of God, and only then was He given to us.
Isaiah says—and please note that I shall omit certain passages about what the Jews say. I shall omit only some, not all, so that we do not spend too much time on Saint Cyril’s attitude toward the Jews. His catecheses were delivered in Jerusalem, and naturally the surrounding Jewish environment was hostile to Christianity. I am omitting some passages, except for those which we too need to hear. He refers to Isaiah’s prophecy: “A child has been born to us”—not to them. The child was not given to them; He was given to us, he says. “And a Son has been given to us.” A Son was given to us. This prophecy, which is
very important—and for that reason I shall turn to the original text—is found in Isaiah, chapter nine, verses four, five, and six. “For a child has come into being for us.” The text of the Old Testament spells the verb with a single nu, so it comes from the verb meaning “to come into being.” Saint Cyril spells it with two nus, from the verb meaning “to give birth.” In reality, it makes no difference; ultimately the meaning is the same. Whether a child came into being or a child was born, the result is clear and is the same. These are simply variations in spelling among the manuscripts. Now, please pay close attention here.
Let us turn to Isaiah and see what he says.
“A child has been born to us, and a Son has been given to us, whose authority rests upon His shoulder; and His name shall be called Angel of Great Counsel, Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Ruler, Prince of Peace, Father of the age to come. For I shall bring peace upon the rulers, peace and health to Him. Great is His authority, and of His peace there is no limit, upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, to establish it and uphold it with judgment and
with righteousness, from this time forth and forever. The zeal of the Lord Sabaoth shall accomplish these things.” All these things that Isaiah prophesies—“the zeal of the Lord Sabaoth shall accomplish these things.” That is, love reaching the intensity of zeal—the exceeding abundance of the Lord’s love—will bring all these wondrous things to fulfillment. So please pay attention. We shall take this prophecy word by word, because it is extraordinarily important.
Saint Cyril says, “A Son has been given to us.” A Son was given to us. But note, Saint Cyril says, that He was first the Son of God and afterward was given to us. Let us see, then, what Isaiah says. It is in the ninth chapter of Isaiah.
“He was born to us”—a child was born to us. First of all, the verb is in the past tense.
There are two reasons for this. The first is that the prophet is so certain that he speaks as though these things had already happened, and therefore he uses the past tense. The second reason is related to the first: the prophet sees things in images—God alone knows how He reveals a future truth on each occasion—and when the prophet records in a book what he has seen, he writes in the past tense in relation to the visions he saw, although in reality they concern things that belong to the future.
For example, if I were shown a film of things that are going to happen and then had to describe what I saw, I would say, “I saw that this happened, and then that happened,” even though it has not yet happened but will happen. I am telling you this so that you will know that the prophets usually—uh...
ninety-nine percent of the time—write in the past tense. They use either the simple past or the imperfect, something of that kind. So, a child was born to us. How momentous! A child was born to us. But are not many children born?
“And He was given to us.” But are not many sons given to us human beings?
Now, however, let us examine the identity of that Son who was born to us and given to us—His identity. This is profoundly important, because it will help us, my beloved, to learn who it is that has been given to us. Consider Bethlehem: what do we have in Bethlehem? In Bethlehem we have the birth of Jesus Christ. What, then, does “child” mean here? What is the identity of the child born in Bethlehem? The Magi came to worship Him. What is the identity of the One whom they were to worship? The Prophet will now tell us the identity of the One who...
was given to us as a child.
“Whose authority rests upon His shoulder.” You know, “authority” here means sovereign power. His authority, it says, was placed upon His shoulder. Of course, it hardly needs saying that military officers symbolically bear their authority on their shoulders, because that is where their insignia are displayed—second lieutenant, lieutenant, captain, major, or whatever rank they may hold. There, we might say, are the stripes of rank. I mention this simply as an illustration. The shoulder is the part of the body that bears a burden. When we want to lift something very heavy, something beyond the strength of our arms, so that we cannot hold it in our hands, what do we do? We place it on our shoulder. Everyone knows this. It therefore means that He will possess such authority that He will bear His entire creation upon His shoulder—all people, their sins, and their very existence. He will carry them all upon His shoulder, that is, upon Himself. Christ truly is the One who upholds all things. He is the One who bears the sins of humanity. He is the One who sustains the whole universe. “Whose authority,” as I told you,
“rests upon His shoulder. And His name shall be called Angel of Great Counsel.” Of course, last time we explained what “name” means. All these are prophetic names, like the name Emmanuel. I explained to you that this is not a personal name, but an attribute expressed as a name. And what does the prophecy say? His name is Angel of Great Counsel. What does “angel” mean? Certainly, it does not mean an angel in the sense in which we usually understand the word, as a being from the spiritual world. When we hear “angel,” that is what we think: “It is an angel,” or, “An angel appeared to me.” But that is not the meaning here. In Greek, the word angel means messenger.
It means one who brings a message. Because the angels—those spiritual beings—bring messages to human beings, we have called them angels. Thus, the word “angel” does not in itself mean what we commonly understand by it, namely, a noetic spiritual nature that appears to people, and so on. Rather, it describes the mission of those noetic beings who come to announce something. “Angel,” then, denotes an attribute or function. And here a grave error arises. Heretics in particular, including the millenarians, misunderstand this. What do they say? “See, it calls Him the Angel of Great Counsel.”
They therefore claim that the Son is an angel. They even dare, by misinterpreting other passages of Holy Scripture, to say that Jesus Christ is the Archangel Michael incarnate. My beloved, anyone with even an elementary knowledge of Greek can understand this matter. Only an elementary knowledge is needed, as I told you, because I have explained what “angel” means: a messenger. It does not necessarily mean one of the angels of heaven, and so forth. He therefore bears the name Angel—that is, Messenger—because His attribute is to bring a message. What message? The message of Great Counsel. “Counsel” means a decision, a plan, or a will.
He is the Messenger of a great plan, a great decision of God. This counsel is so great that none of the created noetic spirits whom we call angels could bring it to fulfillment. What is this Great Counsel? The Great Counsel, my beloved, is that humanity shall be saved. But humanity shall be saved through the Incarnation of the Angel of Great Counsel. Indeed, all the Fathers of our Church
interpret the Angel who appeared in the bush—the bush that burned yet was not consumed—in the vision before Moses, and who spoke to him from within it, in this way. Moses approached to see the strange sight: how the bush had caught fire and yet, though it was burning, was neither scorched nor consumed. As he drew near, he heard the voice: “Stop. Remove your sandals, for this place is holy.” Moses was afraid. Scripture says that the Angel of the Lord spoke to him there. Who is this Angel of the Lord? All the Fathers interpret this passage and say that He is not an angel sent by God in the sense of a created spirit. He is the Son, the Messenger of the Father’s Great Counsel. In other words, He is God the Word (Logos), present there as the Angel of Great Counsel. And what is the Great Counsel that He reveals to Moses? It is the liberation of God’s people, Israel, from the dominion of the Egyptians. But this is a type—an antitype pointing beyond itself. What, then, is the prototype? The Angel of Great Counsel will come personally, through His Incarnation, to proclaim to us the Jubilee, that is, the year of remission and release.
“To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.” That is, to proclaim a year acceptable to God. Which year is this? The Jubilee, the fiftieth year. What does that mean? This also took place in the Old Testament. It was the year of release, the year when slaves were set free. Figuratively, then, it means humanity’s liberation from slavery to Satan and slavery to death. Slavery to Satan was brought to an end at the Cross of Christ, and slavery to death was brought to an end at the Resurrection of Christ. He is the Angel of Great Counsel. This is the Great Counsel of God. It is renowned; indeed, my dear friends, it is glorious.
“The Angel of Great Counsel.”
“Wonderful Counselor.” If you consult the commentaries, you will find that some interpreters arrange these attributes—which identify the child who was to be born—in different ways. For example, some write “Wonderful,” place a comma there, and then write “Counselor.” Others interpret the phrase as “Wonderful Counselor,” rather than as two separate titles, “Wonderful” and “Counselor.” We interpret it as the text indicates: “Wonderful Counselor,” taking the two words together as one title. What is this Wonderful Counselor? In what sense is He a counselor? Pay attention.
This is the Wisdom of God existing in a person, the Wisdom described in the Book of Proverbs, the Wisdom of Solomon, and the Wisdom of Sirach. These three renowned books are called wisdom literature because their central theme is the personal Wisdom of God—not, please understand, the various practical, beautiful, divinely inspired, and marvelous counsels addressed to human beings.
They may offer this or that counsel concerning the practical life of man, but such counsels are not the central point of these books. Their central theme is the Wisdom of God—the personal Wisdom of God. He is the second person of the Holy Trinity. In the eighth chapter of Proverbs, then, Wisdom says the following. Indeed, if you read it not in the Septuagint translation but in a modern translation of the Hebrew text, you will see it expressed more clearly: “I,” says Wisdom, “was beside God”—meaning the Father—“and I was a co-creator with the Father.” A co-creator, creating together with the Father. How, then, is Wisdom presented here? As a counselor.
Of course, you may ask, “A counselor? Does the second person of the Holy Trinity counsel the first person of the Holy Trinity? Would the first person need a counselor?” Wait a moment; I will explain this shortly. He is presented as a counselor. What does that mean? It means that He shares in the work of creation. And He is a Wonderful Counselor. He could not be anything other than wonderful. He is wonderful because He is Wisdom, and everything Wisdom does is wonderful. Therefore, from the wonders of creation we recognize Him as the Wonderful Counselor. I asked you earlier: Does the Son counsel the Father? No. God is one. How, then, are we to understand this?
Theophanes of Nicaea, in one of his homilies on the Theotokos, says something remarkable. Quite by chance, the day before yesterday I glanced through that book because I had marked something in it and we were making another photocopy. My eyes fell upon the following passage. It is wonderful; listen to it. Attributes belonging to the elements of creation are ascribed to the Son—that is, to Jesus Christ. For the Son is the principle and cause of the elements of creation. Therefore, He is their Lord, and the Son is made known precisely because He is the sovereign principle and cause
of all created beings. Created beings are the things that have been made. The Son is their principle and cause, as Saint John says: “Without Him nothing was made that was made.” Nothing that came into being was made without Him. Now this Word (Logos) comes down to earth, assumes the dimensions of a particular human being, and takes the names of the elements He created, whose principle and cause He Himself is. And what are these names? “I am the light,” says the Son.
Light, however, is something created by the Son. Yet He takes the name of the created thing to show that He is the Creator of light. “I am the living water”; “I am a consuming fire”; and whatever else you may name. He takes the names of the elements He Himself created. All these things are truly marvelous. Thus, through Isaiah’s title “Wonderful Counselor,” understood together with the wisdom books of the Old Testament, we recognize the identity of that humble child born in the manger of a cave in Bethlehem. He is the Wonderful Counselor, the Creator of all things.
What can I say? I do not know. My dear friends, are you astonished by all this? I am astonished. These things are majestic when a person begins to discover the identity of his Lord. Suppose, my dear friends, that you belonged to a poor, very poor family. Your parents were illiterate, while you had learned just a little, perhaps attending two, three, or four years of primary school. Then one day a sack containing some manuscripts was discovered in your house. Since you had learned to read a little, though your parents could not read, you began examining these inherited papers.
“Where did these papers come from?” “My child, how should I know? They were simply found here. My father had them, I suppose. They were found in our house.” You take the papers out, begin to read them, and discover how glorious your family once was. You might even find that you descended from an imperial family—from the Palaiologos dynasty of Byzantium, for all you know. What would you do? You would say, “Oh, what a noble ancestry I have!” This is what we are doing now. We are discovering who it is that we believe in, whom we worship, and before whom we bow down. We are discovering Him and learning who He is. And this is astonishing; it fills the soul with wonder.
“Mighty God.” Of all these epithets, names, and attributes given to the child who was born and given to us, this is the central name: Mighty God. So what can anyone say? The One who was born is Jesus Christ. Someone may say, “Yes, very well, ‘Wonderful Counselor’—interpret that however you like. Yes, very well, ‘Angel of Great Counsel’—say whatever you want; claim He is the Archangel Michael.” Distort the words as much as you wish. You can distort them if you choose. If your thinking is perverse, distort them. If you are inclined toward heresy, distort them. But how can you distort the name “Mighty God”?
It cannot be distorted. It is perfectly clear: Mighty God. That is why we say, “Holy God, Holy Mighty.” God alone—Yahweh, the Lord—is the Mighty God. And this child bears the name “Mighty God.” Truly, then, “the Word became flesh.” Does this astonish you? How did the rabbis read and interpret the prophecy that this child would be Mighty God? My dear friends, they must have been left speechless, unable to interpret it, just as today we cannot interpret the Last Things (eschata) until we see how they unfold. Pay attention to this. Thank you.
Once we see how events unfold—once these things actually come to pass—we will say, “So that is what this means.” In the same way, the rabbis could not interpret it. These questions remained open. But when the event itself came to pass, when the Son of God came and revealed who He is, they should have said, “Let us return to the prophets and look at them again. How are we to interpret what we could not understand for so many centuries? Is there now something we can say about it?” Yes. We discover, then, that the child born in Bethlehem is who? Mighty God. He is Yahweh; He is the Lord. We pray, my dear friends, that everything we are saying may confirm the faith within us,
making it firm and strong. “Ruler” is another name. Who is truly a ruler? Alexander the Great? My dear friends, what an irony of history! After conquering the world, he went to bathe in a river, perhaps the Euphrates or the Tigris, and caught a chill. As we might say today, he became chilled. Perhaps he was sweating and caught cold; perhaps he developed pneumonia. The point is that he died. Who, then, is the ruler? Alexander the Great? Or Napoleon, who died in exile?
My dear friends, God alone is the Ruler of history and of all things. He rules over things in heaven, on earth, and beneath the earth. He is the One who brings the dead back from Hades; the One who says to the daughter of Jairus, “Child, arise! Child, arise!”; the One who says to Lazarus, “Lazarus, come forth!” and whose voice is heard in Hades. He is the Ruler, the only Ruler. And now, my dear friends, we continue with the names and attributes given to the child who is born and given to us.
“Prince of Peace.”
The Prince of Peace. A little further on, Saint Cyril says, “And shortly afterward he says,” meaning a little further down, “Of His peace there is no end.” There is no limit to His peace. Indeed, Isaiah says here: “Great is His rule, and of His peace there is no end.” In other words, His peace has no limitation. Its depth is immeasurable, and its breadth is also immeasurable. What do we mean by breadth? We mean that this peace extends across the whole breadth of creation. And what does the depth of peace mean? It means that this peace possesses the profound quality of reconciliation between God and creation.
Thus, the vertical dimension—its depth and quality—is the profound peace of reconciliation between God and creation; while its breadth means that all creation will have peace. His peace, therefore, is without limit. Saint Cyril gives a beautiful comparison here. He says: “The Romans have boundaries, but the Kingdom of the Son of God has no boundary.”
The vast Roman Empire had its borders, but the Kingdom of God has no limits. “The Persians and the Medes have boundaries.” Even their immense empires at that time had boundaries. “But the Son has no boundary.” The Son has no limits. The peace that the Son brings is immeasurable in both breadth and depth. Therefore, “of His peace there is no end.” What more can I say about the title “Prince of Peace”? He is the sovereign Lord of peace. That is what “prince” means here: one who possesses authority.
Who has authority over peace today? No one. Who can claim that he is able to bring peace to the earth today? No one. Everyone speaks of peace; everyone longs for peace; but no one possesses authority over peace. However much goodwill the ruler of a great nation may have, even if he says, “We shall prevail and bring peace upon the earth,” no one is the ruler of peace. Only the Son of God is. Take careful note of this. If we worship the Son, we shall immediately possess peace in all its fullness. Yet the peace of the Son refers chiefly to what is to come.
Today humanity does not accept the incarnate Son. For this reason, the peace of God, the peace of the Son, will be manifested and revealed in the age to come. When the Kingdom of God is finally revealed, then the full height, depth, and breadth of that peace—and of the Son’s authority—will also be made manifest. For when the Jerusalem above, the Kingdom of God, descends upon the earth, what shall we have? The union of the things above with the things below: the union of heaven—the spiritual heaven, of God—with His creation below. This is peace.
Reconciliation. In the Apocalypse, John the Evangelist says, “I saw the Jerusalem above descending,” “like a bride,” and so forth. Christ, then, is the Prince of Peace and the Father of the age to come. Take careful note of this beautiful title. The One now being born in Bethlehem is the Father of the age to come. Was there a father of the present age? Yes, my dear friends. The father of the present age is Adam. In this present age—and by “age” here we do not mean a period of one hundred years, but the course of history—who is the father of this age, of history? It is Adam. Are we not all children of Adam? He is our father. Who, then, will be the Father of the age to come? And what is the age to come? It is the Kingdom of God. Who will be its Father? The New Adam. The Son, therefore, is the forefather of the new people whom He begets through faith. John the Evangelist expresses this beautifully in the first chapter: “As many as believed in Him, to them He gave the authority to be called children of God.” He granted us divine adoption. Therefore, since this is adoption, He is the Father. He is the Father of the age to come; He is the New Adam.
Let us continue now with Saint Cyril.
I return to paragraph twenty-four, which ends as follows: “Upon the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it. Therefore, the Holy Virgin was descended from David.” Isaiah’s prophecy continues: “Upon the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and uphold it with judgment and with righteousness, from this time forth and forever.” Thus, Isaiah says that His kingdom will be the kingdom of David. Saint Cyril therefore draws the conclusion and says, “From David.”
“Therefore”—that is what the word means—“the Holy Virgin was descended from David.” If Christ is descended from David, and He was born of the Theotokos, then the Theotokos must also be descended from David. Thus the Theotokos belongs to David’s royal line. This is no accident, my dear friends, and it serves a multitude of purposes—so many that, however long we search, some new truth will continually be revealed. This is why the two holy Evangelists, Matthew and Luke, each place a genealogy at the beginning of his Gospel. These genealogies are of the greatest value, filled with profound meaning and rich theology.
We hear it on the Sunday of the Forefathers, the Sunday before Christmas: “Abraham begot Isaac.” This genealogical account may seem tiring, tedious, and uninteresting to us. But do you know what treasures it contains?
Yet one purpose concerns us here: it proves that the Theotokos was descended from David. Why does this matter? Because the prophecy is thereby fulfilled. What is a genealogy? A genealogy is history. Listen carefully to what I said: genealogical records. It is like a civil registry. We go to the registry and discover who my father was, who my father’s father was, who my grandfather’s father was, and we continue back through the generations.
Among their many important purposes, then, let me mention this one: the genealogies prove that the Theotokos came from the line of David. Thus the prophecy is fulfilled. What does Isaiah say? That He will sit upon the throne of David. And what did the Archangel Gabriel say to the Theotokos? “He whom you shall bear will sit upon the throne of His father David.” Allow me a brief explanatory aside. What did the Archangel call David in relation to Jesus, who would be born of the Theotokos? He said, “He will sit upon the throne of His father.” Do you know how many years separate Jesus Christ from David? One thousand years.
David, then, is not His immediate father, in the sense that Christ was born directly from him, as when we say, “my child.” Why, then, is David called His father? I mention this to show you that when we encounter genealogical records in Holy Scripture, we must understand them carefully. For example, when Adam begets Cain and Abel, yes, there is direct generation. But in the genealogies that follow, the succession is not always immediate. This means that if we add up the genealogies, we do not necessarily arrive at seven thousand years, as the Jews do. The span could amount to tens of thousands of years. Why?
I say this by way of apologetics: the one said to be begotten is not always the immediate son. A span of five hundred or a thousand years may intervene, during which there was no notable person considered worthy of being recorded in history. Then a notable person who lived a thousand years later is recorded. The text says, “So-and-so begot so-and-so,” though he did not beget him directly; perhaps a thousand years came between them. Please keep these things in mind. They are precious aids to understanding Holy Scripture, if you store them both in your memory and in your notes.
For the instrument that trains the memory is the pen—that is, paper and pencil. Repetition also trains the memory. Let us never say, “I read it once, so I know it.” Read it again. Then, my dear friends, we shall become a treasury filled with many riches, and we shall truly delight in Holy Scripture. Holy Scripture is a garden whose fruits are within reach, if only we go and gather them. Otherwise, Holy Scripture remains a garden while we stand outside its wall, unable to reach in; or its trees are so tall that we can see the fruit but cannot reach it at all.
Let me return to the subject. That concludes the aside.
We now enter paragraph twenty-five.
“For it was fitting that the Most Pure One and Teacher of purity should come forth from a pure bridal chamber. For if the priest who rightly ministers to Jesus abstains from his wife, how could Jesus Himself have been born of a man and a woman? ‘For You are He,’ He says in the Psalms, ‘who drew Me forth from the womb.’ Pay close attention to the words ‘who drew Me forth from the womb,’ for they signify that He was born without a man, drawn forth from a virgin womb and from her flesh. For those born through marital union are born in another manner.” Here, take care not to misunderstand a subtle point.
He says that it was fitting for the Most Pure One, the Teacher of purity, to be born—to come forth—from a pure bridal chamber. What is meant by a bridal chamber? It is the nuptial chamber, the chamber of husband and wife. Thus, he says, it was fitting that Christ should come forth from a state of purity. This might appear to belittle Holy Matrimony. That is why I told you to pay close attention to this point.
That is not what Saint Cyril means. He continues by saying that the priest who ministers rightly to Jesus Christ abstains from his wife. What do we priests minister when we serve the Divine Liturgy? We minister the Body and Blood of Christ. We minister the Body and Blood of Christ. If a cleric is married, he must exercise a measure of abstinence. This was also required of the priests under the Law. When the priests of the Law—that is, of the Old Testament—were to offer sacrifice and perform their other duties, they had to abstain from their wives. Take note of this.
Indeed, the entire people abstained in this matter when they were about to receive the Law. God said that they were to practice abstinence for three days. What have those people to say who ask, “Where is it written that there should be abstinence? Where did you find that?” They think that saying, “I am married,” means, “I may do whatever I please.” Who told you, my brother, that you may do whatever you please? Who told you that? I say this because some people ask, “Then why did I marry?” You married in order to practice self-restraint, my brother. That is why you married—not so that you might come together without restraint or hindrance, like... I was about to make a comparison, but it would have been mistaken. In the animal kingdom there are seasons of reproduction, and at other times animals do not mate.
So I would have been wrong. How, then, could Jesus—on whose behalf priests minister and from whom abstinence and self-restraint are required when they minister—have been born of a man and a woman? It was fitting, therefore, that He should be born of a Virgin. Notice this point carefully: Saint Cyril is not opposed to Holy Matrimony. One might initially receive the impression that he is, but that is not what he means. Holy Matrimony is not being disparaged, for it was instituted by God. God ordained that it should be so.
But here he wishes to say something else. Pay close attention: from where was Adam born? He was not born from one of the same nature as himself. Strictly speaking, he was not born at all, but was created. We would therefore use not the verb “to beget,” but the verb “to come into being”: Adam came into being. From where? From the earth. God, it says, took dust from the earth. Until then, the earth had not brought forth a rational being. Everything that had come into being—animals and plants—was without reason.
The first rational being is Adam. Therefore, in relation to this first creature, the earth is presented as virgin. This interpretation is not my own; it also comes from Theophanes of Nicaea, whom I mentioned earlier. God took from the virgin earth and made Adam. But the Apostle Paul states clearly that Jesus Christ is the New Adam. He therefore had to be taken from a Virgin, precisely so as to correspond to the old Adam. This does not disparage Holy Matrimony; it simply preserves this line of correspondence.
Once again, the New Adam would come from a Virgin, from the Theotokos. Would you like another example? Eve, too, was not born, but came into being from Adam. Cain was born—the first to be begotten—always according to God’s command and plan. Tell me: if the Fall had not taken place, would children have come into being or not? No. Why? Because Holy Matrimony would not have been instituted. There would have been another mode of creation. Here, then, Saint Cyril subtly hints at a certain sorrow.
What a pity that we are born this way. Again, this does not mean that he disparages Holy Matrimony. Yet the way we are born is lower than the way in which God would have brought human beings into existence if the Fall had not intervened. For Holy Matrimony did not exist in the Kingdom of God. Pay attention now to the strongest part of the argument. Holy Matrimony did not exist in Paradise, because it was after the Fall that our first parents became husband and wife. And the proof is that when humanity returns to the Kingdom of God, to the new Paradise, there will be no Holy Matrimony. This is why the Lord said to the Sadducees, who neither understood nor believed these things:
“You are mistaken, because you do not know the Scriptures.” You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures. In the Kingdom of God, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like the angels. What does “like the angels” mean? It does not mean that they will have a different nature, but that there will be no Holy Matrimony, just as there is no marriage among the angels. So Holy Matrimony is not being disparaged here. Rather, we might say that this is a hint of something far greater… Let us continue.
“For You are He,” it says in the Psalms. This is Psalm 21, verse 10. Why does it say, “You are He who drew Me forth from the womb”? Pay attention. I will say it somewhat awkwardly so that I can preserve the wording of the text: “He who drew Me forth from the womb.” You who pulled Me from the womb. Listen closely to this phrase, to this one word: “drew forth.” The verb means to pull something out with force. How might we illustrate it? It would be like a Caesarean section,
especially one performed before the ninth month in order to take the child out—if I may put it this way—when the physician intervenes and removes a woman’s child from within her. The child is not delivered in the usual way, but is drawn out, pulled forth, brought out in this manner. Listen, then, to the significance of the words “drew forth.”
Saint Cyril says: “Pay close attention to the words, ‘He who drew Me forth from the womb,’ and to what they signify.” Pay attention, he says, to the verb “drew forth.” What does it mean? “It signifies that He was born without a man, drawn forth from a virgin womb and from her flesh.” In the end, then, do we not have a birth? Of course we do, but it is a birth without a man. This is what “He who drew Me forth” means: something took place within the womb of the Theotokos without any external cause, without a husband. God took from the very flesh of the Theotokos and brought about the Incarnation of His Son. I want you to understand this more clearly through a prophetic vision seen by Nebuchadnezzar and interpreted by Daniel. It is the famous vision in which Nebuchadnezzar said: “I saw a mountain and an enormous statue, whose head was of gold, whose chest was of silver,”
then bronze, while its feet were of iron: gold, silver, bronze, and iron. I will not go into the details, because the time has passed. Then, from a nearby mountain, I saw a stone being cut out. How was it cut out? Without a human hand. The stone, he says, was cut from that unquarried mountain, a mountain untouched by any quarrying. In the vision he suddenly sees this stone moving away, cut out without a human hand and guided, again without a human hand, toward the statue he had seen. It strikes the statue,
shatters it and reduces it to dust. Then, in place of the statue, the stone grows and covers the whole earth. Daniel says, “This is the Kingdom of God.” Daniel is speaking of Jesus Christ. What is the mountain? It is the Theotokos. Who is the stone cut from the unquarried mountain? It is Jesus Christ, born of a Virgin without the intervention of a man. Do you see the words of Psalm 21, “He who drew Me forth”? Do you see how they agree with Nebuchadnezzar’s vision as interpreted by Daniel? And here is the event itself: the Virgin gives birth to the Son of God. My dear friends, as you understand, all these things help us to grasp the identity of the Child who was given to us and born for us. What else, then, does His identity reveal? Mighty God—God who is mighty. In His divinity, He is without a mother. He has no mother according to His divinity, for the words “drew forth” also refer to His divine birth, signifying that He is of the same divine essence as the Father. In His humanity, He is without a father. There, too, we have the words “drew forth,” because He was born of a Virgin. This is the identity of the Lord Jesus Christ, in whom we believe, whom we love, and whom we worship.

99% γράφουν πάντοτε σε χρόνο περασμένο. Δηλαδή ή αόριστος θα είναι ή παρατατικός θα είναι, κάπως έτσι. Παιδί, λοιπόν, γεννήθηκε σε εμάς. Σπουδαίο! Σε εμάς γεννήθηκε παιδί. Καλά, πολλά παιδιά δεν γεννιούνται;
«Και εδόθη ημίν». Καλά, πολλοί υιοί δεν δίδονται σε εμάς τους ανθρώπους;
Βέβαια... Θα μου πείτε: «Σύμβουλος; Δηλαδή το δεύτερο πρόσωπο της Αγίας Τριάδος συμβουλεύει το πρώτο πρόσωπο της Αγίας Τριάδος; Διότι το πρώτο πρόσωπο θα είχε ανάγκη συμβούλου;» Περιμένετε λίγο, θα σας το πω λίγο πιο κάτω. Φέρεται σύμβουλος. Τι σημαίνει αυτό; Μέτοχος στη δημιουργία. Και είναι θαυμαστός σύμβουλος. Δεν μπορεί να μην είναι θαυμαστός. Είναι θαυμαστός διότι είναι η Σοφία και ό,τι κάνει η Σοφία είναι θαυμαστόν και, συνεπώς, από τα θαυμαστά δημιουργήματα βγάζουμε ότι είναι ο θαυμαστός σύμβουλος. Σας είπα προηγουμένως: συμβουλεύει τον Πατέρα ο Υιός; Όχι. Ο Θεός είναι ένας. Αλλά πώς έχει το πράγμα;
Θεός Ισχυρός. Από όλα τα επίθετα αυτά, ονόματα, ιδιότητες που αποδίδονται εις το παιδίο που εγεννήθηκε και δόθηκε σε μας, από όλα τα ονόματα το κεντρικό όνομα είναι αυτό: Θεός Ισχυρός. Ώστε, λοιπόν, τι μπορεί να πει κανείς; Να πει ότι αυτός που γεννήθηκε, δηλαδή ο Ιησούς Χριστός... Ναι, εντάξει, θαυμαστός σύμβουλος. Εξήγησέ το όπως θέλεις. Ναι, εντάξει, Μεγάλης Βουλής Άγγελος. Ε, πες ό,τι θέλεις, ότι είναι ο Αρχάγγελος Μιχαήλ. Διαστρέψέ τα όσο θέλεις. Μπορείς να διαστρέψεις άμα θέλεις. Έχεις διεστραμμένο μυαλό, διάστρεψέ τα. Είσαι αιρετικής διαθέσεως, να τα διαστρέψεις. Πώς θα διαστρέψεις το όνομα «Θεός Ισχυρός»;
πίστη, για να την κάνουν εδραία και σπουδαία. Εξουσιαστής, άλλο όνομα. Ποιος είναι εξουσιαστής; Ο Μέγας Αλέξανδρος; Αγαπητοί μου, τι ειρωνεία της ιστορίας! Αφού κατέκτησε τον κόσμο, πήγε να κάνει ένα μπάνιο στο ποτάμι, στον Ευφράτη, στον Τίγρη, και εκεί κρυολόγησε. Θα το λέγαμε σήμερα, πουντίασε. Ίσως να ήταν ιδρωμένος, πουντίασε, ίσως έπαθε πνευμονία. Το θέμα είναι, πέθανε. Ποιος, λοιπόν, εξουσιαστής; Ο Μέγας Αλέξανδρος ή ο Ναπολέων, που πέθανε εξόριστος;
Που ακούμε την Κυριακή των Προπατόρων, μια Κυριακή προ των Χριστουγέννων, να λέμε «Αβραάμ εγέννησε τον Ισαάκ» και μας φαίνεται αυτή η περιγραφή, η γενεαλογική, κουραστική, ανιαρή, αδιάφορος. Ξέρετε τι έχει εκεί και τι δεν έχει;
Λοιπόν, δεν είναι άμεσος πατέρας, με την έννοια ότι γεννάται από τον Δαβίδ, με την έννοια όπως λέμε εμείς «το παιδί μου». Και πώς αποκαλείται πατέρας; Γιατί το είπε αυτό, ξέρετε; Για να σας πω ότι, όπου έχουμε στην Αγία Γραφή γενεαλογικούς καταλόγους, στο θέμα, επί παραδείγματι, το ότι ο Αδάμ γεννάει τον Κάιν και τον Άβελ, ναι, έχουμε άμεση γέννηση εδώ. Στις παρακάτω γενεαλογίες δεν είχαμε πάντοτε άμεση γέννηση, που σημαίνει ότι, αν μαζέψουμε τις γενεαλογίες, δεν βγάζουμε 7.000 χρόνια, όπως βγάζουν οι Εβραίοι. Μπορώ να βγάλω δεκάδες χιλιάδες χρόνια. Γιατί;
