Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem presents Isaiah’s prophecy as the answer to how the Messiah, the incarnate Son of God, would enter the world through a virginal conception without human seed. Genesis and Ezekiel are interpreted as foretelling the Theotokos’s perpetual virginity before, during, and after Christ’s birth, a doctrine symbolized by the three stars in Orthodox iconography. The division and decline of Solomon’s kingdom distinguish temporary earthly kingship from the everlasting Davidic reign fulfilled in Christ.

We are still, beloved, in the twelfth catechetical lecture of Saint Cyril, Bishop of Jerusalem, at paragraph 21.
We are asking from whom He comes and how He comes. With this opening sentence, beloved, we remain with the third question—or, if you prefer, the third point: “Is it in God’s nature to dwell among men?” Is it possible for the whole nature of God, the uncreated nature, to have communion with created beings—with mankind? And the third question is: “Or is it possible for a virgin to give birth without a man?” We have now reached this third question, since the first has been examined and so has the second. We now proceed to the third question, which Saint Cyril will answer: whether it is possible for a Virgin to give birth without a man, without seed. So when he says here, “We are asking from whom He comes and how He comes,” this is what he means. We are seeking to learn
from whom the Messiah comes and how the Messiah comes—the Son of God who became man. “Isaiah tells us this: Behold, the Virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call His name Emmanuel.” Behold, the Virgin will conceive. “She shall conceive in her womb”; she will receive Him in her womb and bear a son. All these words are in the future tense. “She shall bear” a son, “and they shall call”—they shall call His name Emmanuel.
This prophecy is regarded as central and of decisive importance for the subject before us, for the question we are going to answer. But let us pay attention. Further on, Saint Cyril devotes the whole of paragraphs 21 and 22 to answering the Jews specifically and exclusively. Because these paragraphs have such a narrowly limited purpose—that is, they answer Jewish objections arising from a narrow understanding of certain matters—we shall not use these two paragraphs.
Instead, we shall remain with the prophecy itself and examine it exactly as the Prophet Isaiah presents it, rather than following Saint Cyril’s answer to the Jews and their persistently narrow-minded understanding. When the Prophet Isaiah places the word “behold” here—as the Evangelist Luke, or any other Evangelist, also uses this word, meaning “look”—he wishes to make the reader attentive: “Pause over what you are reading. Stop here, and take care how you hear and interpret what I am about to tell you.” Thus, he draws the reader’s attention: “Behold.” Look in the Evangelist Luke, or in any other
Evangelist, and notice when they place “behold” before an event: it is when the event is exceedingly important. And this truly is important. “The Virgin shall conceive.” The Virgin will conceive. The Virgin will conceive. Of course, when a young woman enters into the communion of Holy Matrimony, it is presumed that she is a virgin. But as one Father of our Church says so beautifully, when the Son of God is born as man from the Virgin, He is the One who opens the womb.
In the case of every other woman, the womb has already been opened by her husband, her spouse. Therefore, it is not opened by the child who is to be born. This is a point worthy of attention. Here, however, the Virgin truly gives birth, and her womb is opened by the child being born. This is the unique case in which the child opens the womb. Who opens it? The child who is born. This is very important. If you wish to know the general meaning of the paragraphs that follow, which I do not intend to analyze for you, it is this: Holy Scripture also uses the word “young woman.” Saint Cyril therefore attempts to show that when Scripture speaks of “the young woman” who is found in a field, in a deserted place, and someone assaults her, it says, “and the young woman shall cry out.” She is presumed to be a virgin. And then the passage continues, but I need not relate the whole account. What does Holy Scripture call the virgin? It calls her “a young woman.” How then can you Jews claim that Isaiah does not say “virgin,” but “young woman”? Even if he had said “young woman,” since Holy Scripture itself uses the term “young woman” for a virgin
in the example I have given you, we arrive at the same conclusion. This is what the paragraph attempts to prove, and that is why I am passing over it: it dealt purely with a Jewish objection. So, “the Virgin shall conceive”; thus, we have conception without seed. How striking and momentous this is! “And she shall bear a son.” She will give birth to a son. Even the sex is specified: He will be a Son. “And they shall call His name Emmanuel.” They will call His name Emmanuel. The name also is specified.
I shall dwell briefly on the name and then return to the subject of the Virgin. The name Emmanuel is prophetic. If you read the Gospel according to Matthew, you will see the following: the Evangelist refers to the Prophet Isaiah and says, “And they shall call His name Emmanuel.” A little later, he says that the angel appears and tells the Theotokos—forgive me, Joseph—that he shall call the child’s name Jesus. A careless reader might perhaps say that there is an inconsistency here. Why does the Prophet say “Emmanuel,” while the angel says “Jesus”?
The name “Jesus” means “Savior,” just as today we might use the names Sotiris or Sotirios, which are translations of the name Jesus. Thus, the name Savior indicates that Christ—that is, the Savior, the Messiah—is of the utmost importance. Joshua of old, the son of Nun and successor of Moses, was a type of Jesus Christ. The name Jesus, of course, was extremely common among the Jews. Precisely because it was so common, a further designation was added, as Christ’s contemporaries said, “Jesus the Nazarene.” They added a descriptive name, just as the ancient Greeks, when a name was very common, would add the father’s name or the place of origin. Thus, the name becomes specific, and we know that it refers to this particular person. But what does the name Emmanuel mean? As I told you, it is a prophetic name, and it means “God with us.” It is a name expressed as a phrase: “God with us.” What does this mean? It means that the One who is to be born bears the name Emmanuel; yes, the name expresses who this person will be.
He will be God. God—not simply God, but God with us: God who goes so far as to become man in order to be with us. Thus, there is no contradiction whatsoever in the Evangelist Matthew, because one name expresses the identity of the One being born, while the other expresses His mission and the work He comes to accomplish. Identity and mission are two things, but they are not opposed to one another. Yet, beloved, this prophecy—and above all the name Emmanuel—is, I would say, the very center of the Old Testament.
For toward what is the whole Old Testament directed? The whole of it is typology; the whole of it is prophecy. Everything in it revolves around a single center. What is that center? Emmanuel: God becoming man. As we said yesterday, and as we teach in the advanced catechetical class, what is Christianity? “The Word became flesh.” Therefore, if the heart of the heart, the center of the center, of Christianity is the Incarnation of the Son of God, then the center of the Old Testament—which speaks of that birth—cannot be anything else: Emmanuel.
This is the center of the Old Testament. What was the crossing of the Red Sea? What was the bronze serpent? What was the manna? Did Christ not say, “I am the manna of the Jews”? Then what was that ancient manna which fed the Jews for forty years in the wilderness? It was a type, a prophetic foreshadowing. What was the lamb they slaughtered, whose blood they placed upon the lintels of their doors? And what were all the things that followed, one after another? What were the crossings of the Jordan, the Temple, the Ark, Sinai—what was everything? What was that people itself, that very people, and its twelve tribes? Beloved, whom do all these things prefigure and prophesy? They all point to the person of Jesus Christ, to God who would become man—that is, to Emmanuel.
Do you understand the essence of the matter? Tell me, then: are the Old Testament and the New Testament united? They are two concentric circles. The Old Testament calls this incarnate Son “Emmanuel,” while the New Testament says, “The Word became flesh.” They are concentric circles. How then can we say, so thoughtlessly, “Away with the Old Testament”? Away with the Old Testament? Cast it out? God forbid! God forbid! How majestic, then, beloved, are these words: “And they shall call His name Emmanuel.” In other words, the defining identity of the One to be born will be “God with us”—God among us human beings.
He is born from a Virgin. Here, allow me to say something:
First of all, the Virgin had to… Marriage is not being disparaged here; pay attention to this. Marriage is not being disparaged. When we emphasize that the Lord was born from a Virgin, we are not disparaging marriage, for it would be a sin to do so. That is not the point. Rather, as we shall see shortly—and I shall explain it then, though I will tell you now—Adam was born from virgin earth. No other human being had yet come into existence, and so the earth is presented as virgin. Taking dust from the earth, God fashioned Adam. Thus, the first Adam came from virgin earth. The new Adam, therefore, who fulfills all that the old Adam prefigured, had to come from a Virgin; yet at the same time, He had to come from our own human stock and share our own essence. How could this happen? He would be born from a virgin woman. This is one explanation. There are very many—indeed, countless—reasons that show why Christ was born from a Virgin. This is exceedingly important, profoundly important. And among the many reasons that exist
there is also this sign. A sign was given to the shepherds so that they might recognize the Messiah: no other child had been born that night. He was the only child born. And secondly, this unique child was born and laid in the manger of a stable. That was a sign. So too here, the sign that the One who would stand as the new Adam is that He is born from a Virgin. In other words, this is a miracle, a sign—both a sign and a miracle.
I now proceed to paragraph 23. “We have clearly understood that the Lord is born from a Virgin.” We have clearly come to know that the Lord is born from a Virgin. But allow me to add something to what I said before, which I have just remembered. You know that on that sorrowful evening, when God judges and condemns Adam, Eve, and the devil, something remarkable and worthy of close attention happens—one of those wondrous things in Holy Scripture whose author can only be the Spirit of God, for only He could know all these marvelous things beforehand. God turns toward the woman, and He also turns toward the serpent. Adam, in a manner of speaking, has received his portion of punishment—“By toil you shall bring forth your bread”—and then he moves into the background. This immediately astonishes us. Adam moves into the background, while the serpent and Eve come to the forefront of the future concern. Here is the prophecy. What does God say? “I will put enmity,” He says to the devil, “between you and the woman,”
“between your seed and her seed. He shall watch against your head, and you shall watch against His heel.” Look, beloved, at how marvelous this is. Who possesses the seed? Adam does. For Abraham begot Isaac. Abraham had Sarah as his wife. Abraham begot Isaac, while Sarah bore Isaac; she did not beget him, but bore him. To bear and to beget are not the same thing. Abraham, then, begets Isaac. Adam was the one who was to beget.
Only the man’s seed is reckoned, because that is where the seed is found. Yet Adam is set aside, and God now says, “I will put enmity between you and the woman.” Which woman? Eve? He is pointing to a woman yet to come, as the words that follow make clear. “Between your seed and her seed.” This “her” refers to that future woman, the Theotokos, for it is her seed that you, the devil, will assail. What is the devil’s seed? The devil, we understand, is not material. What seed could he have? In an intelligible, spiritual sense, the devil’s spiritual seed is:
demon-possessed people, wicked people, those who oppose God, and people who are antichrists. And what is the seed of the woman? We have already said that a woman does not possess seed. How, then, can the woman have seed here? This clearly and splendidly points to the birth from a Virgin. Behold the virginity of the Theotokos. Let those who wish to deny the virginity of the Theotokos deny it. Porphyry, Celsus, and others wrote the most blasphemous things against the Most Holy Theotokos—things I would not dare repeat to you, even for the sake of historical record.
Sadly—most sadly—these claims are repeated by those who oppose God and Christ, who are truly the seed of Satan, and they continue to be published in newspapers, magazines, and books to this very day. To this very day! Indeed, they even find ways to publish such things during Holy Week, for example. Yes, I do not dare tell you what they say. I dare not; I cannot tell you. But some of you must have read the accusations they hurl against the Most Holy Theotokos. The simplest of these, which the Protestants also claim, is that the Theotokos had other children. Therefore...
They say that she did give birth as a Virgin, but afterward continued her married life and had other children. Blasphemous things! Here we have a sign: the Virgin who remains a Virgin. And you know, only the Orthodox understand the prophecies. Only the Spirit of God abides in the Church of the Orthodox. I am not engaging in religious chauvinism; this is the truth. This is the reality, the authentic faith. You have heard how our sacred iconography presents this. What does it do? When it depicts the Most Holy Theotokos, it places three stars upon her garments: one here on her forehead—embroidered, of course, upon the cloth...
that covers the head of the Most Holy Theotokos—one on her forehead, one on her right shoulder, and one on her left shoulder. These three stars express a dogma, because, as you know, Orthodox iconography is not naturalistic but dogmatic. It expresses this truth: that the Most Holy Theotokos was a Virgin before giving birth, during the birth, and after the birth. She was a Virgin before she gave birth, a Virgin as she gave birth, and a Virgin after the birth. Perhaps you might say that our Orthodoxy is being rather overly concerned...
with certain matters. How do we know that the Theotokos remained a Virgin during and after the birth? Before the birth, yes, that is clear. But did she remain a Virgin during the birth itself, and afterward as well? The answer is prophecy. I will tell it to you now. This is outside Saint Cyril’s text, although, as you will see in a moment, he himself calls upon many prophecies. Yet the prophecies he uses are only a small sample of all that Holy Scripture contains. Only a small sample, because he could not overload his catechumens or turn his catechesis into a treatise by piling prophecy upon prophecy. It is that prophetic passage...
that is read at every Vespers for a feast of the Theotokos. It comes from the Prophet Ezekiel. What does it say? That gate, he says—the northern gate of the Temple—shall remain shut. The Lord shall pass through it, and it shall remain shut afterward. Which Lord passes through this gate? The Lord. The gate through which the Lord passes is the Theotokos. The Lord passes through, taking human nature from the Theotokos, and comes forth as man. The Lord alone, it says, shall pass through—He alone. The Theotokos, therefore, had no other children. He alone passed through; this passage was unique.
The Lord shall pass through this gate, and it shall remain shut. What does it mean that it shall remain shut? It means what I have been telling you all this time: she was a Virgin before the birth, during the birth, and after the birth. This is how we know these things; it is not because our Church busies herself needlessly with them. And if you tell me these are mere details, I would answer that they are not details, because all these truths define our salvation. If we can ever grasp them and gather them together, then we will understand that all of them together ultimately constitute our salvation.
“That the Lord is born of a Virgin, we have clearly learned; but from what lineage the Virgin came must now be stated.” Saint Cyril is now saying: We have seen clearly, through Isaiah’s prophecy, that the Lord is born of a Virgin. But from what lineage was the Virgin? This, he says, we must now demonstrate. For when someone gathers the evidence and all the pieces agree, then you understand, my dear friends, that together they serve to establish a truth. “Thus He says: The Lord swore truth to David, and He will not annul it: ‘Of the fruit of your body I will set one upon your throne.’”
This is stated in Psalm 131, verse 11.
The Lord swore—“the Lord swore to David”—the following truth, which He will not annul: “Of the fruit of your body,” meaning from your seed. This is the fruit of David’s body, just as elsewhere it says, “from his loins.” The meaning is the same; these are equivalent expressions.
He was to come from David, for it says, “Of the fruit of your body I will set one upon your throne”—that is, from your own seed.
“I will set him upon your throne.” “The Lord swore”—the Lord took an oath. This means, then, that the Messiah, according to His humanity, would descend from David. Pay close attention to what follows: “I will establish his seed forever and ever, and his throne as the days of heaven.” And it continues. These words are from Psalm 88, verse 30. Then it goes on: “Once I swore by My holiness; surely I will not lie to David. His seed shall remain forever, and his throne...”
“like the sun before Me, and like the moon, established forever.” This again is Psalm 88, verses 36 through 38. Please pay attention to these two passages. The first says that this person—who is He? He is always that Unknown One. He is Emmanuel, that Unknown One. The whole Old Testament is always moving toward a single person.
Forever: “Of the fruit of your body I will set one upon your throne.” Therefore, He comes from David’s seed. This person, when He sits upon your throne, will be of your seed. Yet His age is “as the days of heaven.” Do you know what the expression “the days of heaven” means? A “day” here signifies time. I remind you of the expression “the Ancient of Days,” the One ancient in days, the One of great age—the Ancient of Days. But His age is like the age of creation itself.
Moreover, “he shall remain forever”—He shall remain eternally—and His throne, His kingdom, shall be “like the sun before Me.” As long as the sun stands, so long shall His throne, His kingdom, endure, “and like the moon forever.” What is happening here? We have two passages. One says that He will descend from David, while the other reveals the supernatural character of this person—so supernatural that the words cannot apply to Solomon, as Saint Cyril will tell us immediately below: “You see that the passage speaks of Christ and not of Solomon.” Who was David’s principal son who became king? Solomon. But did Solomon endure like the days of heaven?
Not even like the days of the sun and the moon. Who, then, is this person? He has two dimensions. One is His human nature: “from your seed.” The other is His divine nature, shown by the statement that His days are like the days of creation. Let me put it another way. How does David express this? David himself says it elsewhere. He prophesies it in Psalm 109: “The Lord said to my Lord: Sit at My right hand, until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.”
Now the Lord applies this psalm, this prophecy—you know that it is the only prophecy Christ uses concerning Himself when speaking to the Jews, both about who He is and about His descent. He says to them: Tell Me, you ask who Christ is, who I am. I will tell you who I am. You say that I am merely a man, and you consider Me a blasphemer because I said, “I and the Father are one.” I and the Father are one—I and the One whom you worship are one; that is, We are of one essence. So I ask you: am I a blasphemer? You yourselves say that the Messiah, Christ, comes from the seed of David. Very well!
But tell Me: when David says “in the Holy Spirit,” “The Lord said to my Lord: Sit at My right hand,” and so forth, whom does he call Lord here? He speaks of two Lords: “The Lord said to my Lord.” Which Lord spoke? The Lord, the Father. And to whom does He speak? To the Lord, the Son. The Father addresses the Son as Lord: “The Lord said to my Lord: Sit at My right hand,” and so forth. David calls this descendant of his “Lord.”
Have you ever heard of an ancestor calling his descendant “Lord”? Who, then, is this descendant of David, and what is He? Yes, He will be a descendant; He will come from the seed of Abraham and David. But at the same time He will also be David’s Lord—that is, David’s God. So we have these two dimensions. My dear friends, what do Psalm 109—which the Lord Himself uses, though Saint Cyril does not mention it here—and these two prophecies cited by Saint Cyril prove? They prove that the One who was to be born is both man and God: both together, the God-Man. He is the One who constitutes Christianity, the One who is Christianity itself: the God-Man, Jesus Christ. “You see,” I repeat what I said earlier, “that the passage speaks of Christ and not of Solomon, for Solomon’s throne did not remain like the sun.” You see, it is not speaking about Solomon, David’s immediate son, because Solomon’s throne did not remain forever. And would you like to hear something more? Here we see that God sometimes breaks down certain things in order to reveal others. When, for example, a wall obstructs our view of something, we demolish the wall so that the object can be seen. What do I mean by this? God says to Solomon, who had gone astray...
and sinned—Solomon repented and was justified through his metanoia, his repentance, but he did sin. God says to him: Because of the sin you committed, I will punish you. Yet I will not punish you yourself, for the sake of your father David, who was well pleasing to Me. Instead, I will punish your descendants after you die. That single, vast kingdom extended, my dear friends, as far as the Euphrates River. It was the only period in Israel’s history when its borders were so extensive. And it was David who had conquered those territories.
Solomon did not wage war; he was regarded as a peaceful king. During Solomon’s forty-year reign, there was no war. “But I will punish your son.” You may ask, “What fault is it of the son?” That is not the point. What is at stake here is the Christological confirmation of many things. And what happened, my beloved? When Solomon died, the kingdom was divided in two. As is well known, Solomon’s servant Jeroboam—yes, his servant—rebelled against Solomon’s son. Then the ten tribes broke away from the rule of
Solomon’s son and formed their own state, known as the Northern Kingdom of Israel. Solomon’s descendant was left with only two tribes, Judah and Benjamin. And since the tribe of Benjamin was numerically insignificant, in effect only one tribe remained: the tribe of Judah, weak in comparison with the ten tribes. Why did God do this? With one act, God accomplished two purposes—or indeed many. First, He punished Solomon as He had said He would, because Solomon had turned to idolatry. He took idolatrous wives and built pagan temples within Jerusalem.
It was a dreadful sin. Of course, Solomon himself did not worship the idols, but he allowed this to happen, and God punished him. This was his first and chief sin. Then God shattered Solomon’s dreams of a powerful kingdom, and so the royal descendants of Solomon were stripped of their power. Solomon’s royal descendants were reduced, weakened, and brought low, so that the prophecy might stand out clearly: “Your throne shall endure forever.” Yet even David’s earthly throne did not endure forever. It is well known that when Christ came,
the line of David still existed, but the kingdom of David did not. There was only royal descent, not an actual kingdom, because Herod the Idumean—who was not a Jew—sat upon David’s throne. God permitted these things both to punish Solomon for his sin and to bring the prophecy to light, revealing who the Messiah would be.
Saint Cyril also addresses an objection that may seem childish; but when people hold childish notions, the teacher must give what we might call a child-level answer. It is this: “If anyone objects, asking why Christ does not sit upon David’s wooden throne, let him be reminded of the saying: ‘The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat.’ For this does not mean the wooden chair, but the authority of his teaching.”
“Therefore, when you seek the throne of David, do not seek a wooden throne, but the kingdom itself.” In other words, if someone raises this objection—and since Saint Cyril mentions it, such people must have possessed the narrowness of heart and mind found among the Jews in their interpretation of the Scriptures—
someone might say to me, “But the Messiah did not sit on David’s wooden throne—that is, on that actual chair, that wooden chair, the throne. He did not sit there.” But what wooden chair are you talking about? What do you mean—a wooden chair? These are foolish notions. Does not Scripture say that Christ declared, “The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat”? What does “seat” mean here? Does it mean Moses’ literal throne? No. It means that they teach what Moses taught. Thus the seat—the wooden throne—is understood figuratively: it signifies the teaching and the fact that they continue that teaching. So here too, what matters is David’s royal line, not a wooden chair. This is childish, of course, as you understand.
He will now bring forward a great number of testimonies to demonstrate the royal lineage of Jesus Christ and thus confirm the prophecy. For that is where their great value lies. You may ask, “Why do we say all these things?” My beloved, if we demonstrate that Jesus Christ is the One who was foretold—for no one else was foretold—then this means that He is true God. And what more could we ask? If Jesus Christ is the true God who became man, what more do I need? Therein lies our salvation. “Do you also desire witnesses? Take the children who cried aloud: ‘Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the King of Israel!’” as written in Matthew 21:9. What did the people cry out as Jesus Christ entered Jerusalem?
Pay attention: “Hosanna to the Son of David!” Hosanna means, “Glory to God in the highest,” offered to the Son of David. Here the people become interpreters—notice, the people themselves. Some things are unexplainable. There, spontaneously, moved by the miracles of Christ that they had witnessed and by the raising of Lazarus—for the Evangelist tells us that they welcomed Jesus in triumph because He had raised Lazarus—the people went out to meet Him. And as Christ came from Bethany, only about two kilometers east of Jerusalem, and drew near...
before He entered Jerusalem, there occurred that well-known event when He said to two of His disciples, “Go and find a colt.” That too was wondrous, truly wondrous. “Bring the young animal,” that is, the little donkey, “on which no one has ever sat.” This is important. Where can one even begin?
The proofs follow one after another. The Lord took the colt and sat upon it. Notice: He did not mount a proud warhorse. It is what we were saying on another occasion: when you say “king,” what is the sign of a king? What king enters the city of his triumph in glory while seated on a donkey? Forgive me, but what king has ever entered a city on a donkey?
Of course, villagers use donkeys to carry firewood and such things. It was a sign—truly a sign. As we said, one act accomplished many things: it revealed humility, but at the same time it was also a sign. And so He enters the city. Now the people—who told them what to say?—were moved by what they had seen. We might say that the people were filled with the Holy Spirit. And the people became interpreters of the prophecy, proclaiming that Jesus is the King, the descendant of David. And what did they say? “Hosanna—glory to God in the highest—to the Son of David!” Do you know how we might express this? They continue, “Blessed is the King of Israel,” or, “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.” That is, the One who comes...
in the name of the Lord. The Lord comes in the name of the Lord. “The Lord said to my Lord.” Or consider Abraham receiving his guests: “The Lord rained”—listen to this—“upon Sodom and Gomorrah fire and brimstone from the Lord.” The Lord, from the Lord. It is the Son from the Father. These things are astonishing—truly astonishing. See the harmony of Holy Scripture, my beloved, its perfect harmony. And here the people interpret and express this truth. They interpret the prophecy: “Glory to God in the highest...”
“...to the Son of David,” though the people did not understand very much about the glory of God in the highest. They were interpreters, but they did not fully understand. And that is why... Did the same people cry out, “Crucify Him”? Did the people cry that out? No. It was only some people—as many as could fit into Pilate’s courtyard. You know, in those days they did not build with concrete slabs and beams that allowed for enormous buildings. Buildings were limited in size because they lacked the means to support them. How large could Pilate’s courtyard have been, and how many people could it hold? Do you know who filled it? Agents planted there by the Pharisees and the chief priests. Holy Scripture tells us that the scribes, the Pharisees, and the chief priests had placed them there.
They cried out, “Crucify Him!” They were planted agents. So we cannot say—it would be unjust—that the people who cried “Hosanna” on Palm Sunday were the same people who now cried, “Crucify Him!” That is difficult to maintain. So, when they say “Hosanna,” they refer to God; and when they say “Son of David,” they refer to His human nature. Do you know how we might express this invocation, this acclamation? Like this: “Glorified and blessed are You, who are the God-Man.” In other words, that is what it means: “You who are the God-Man.” Were the people consciously aware of this? No. They were not.
Even the disciples themselves did not yet possess this full awareness. Do you know when that complete understanding would come? On the day of Pentecost. Then the Spirit of God would bear witness to who Jesus Christ was. And Gabriel also bears witness... Ah, forgive me. “And the blind men also say, ‘Son of David, have mercy on us.’” The blind men. Do you remember the blind man of Jericho, and the others mentioned elsewhere in Holy Scripture? What did they say? “Son of David.” No one ever disputed that Jesus Christ was of royal descent. No one. As I told you on another occasion, this was because genealogical records were kept.
Matthew and Luke wrote down the genealogies; where did they find them? They were preserved rather like civil registers, we might say, in official record books where births and deaths are recorded. Yes. And this was not accidental. God willed it to be so, in order to reveal who the Coming One is. Thus they call Him the Son of David, the descendant of David, and no one corrects them. “And Gabriel bears clear witness when he says to Mary.” What did the Archangel Gabriel say to the Theotokos? “And the Lord God will give Him”—the One whom you will bear—“the throne of His father David.” David was His father according to the flesh,
His ancestor David. This is written in Luke 1:32. “And Paul says: ‘Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David, according to my Gospel.’” Do you know what Paul’s Gospel is? He often speaks of his Gospel. The Epistle to the Romans is regarded as Paul’s Gospel, what we might call a fifth Gospel. But it is not only Romans. All his epistles are an expression of this Gospel of his. Does that mean it is something different, another Gospel? No. It is the Gospel of Christ. Do you know what the Gospel of Christ is? It has two parts.
Two parts. All of Paul’s theology and all fourteen of his epistles revolve around these two parts. The first is: “Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead”—the One who rose—“descended from David, according to my Gospel,” the One who comes from David according to my Gospel. That is His human nature. What is the other part? In the passage he writes to Timothy, in the First Epistle to Timothy, chapter 3, verse 16, he says—I am telling you this; it is not quoted here—“God was manifested in the flesh.” God appeared in the flesh.
“God was manifested in the flesh” has exactly the same meaning as “the Word became flesh.” They are identical statements, expressed in different words. So what is Paul’s Gospel? The God-Man, Jesus Christ. That is Paul’s Gospel. What is Matthew’s Gospel? The God-Man, Jesus Christ. Mark’s? The God-Man, Jesus Christ. Luke’s? The God-Man, Jesus Christ. John’s? The God-Man, Jesus Christ. What is the message of the seven catholic epistles and the Apocalypse? The God-Man, Jesus Christ. And what is the Gospel of the Church? The God-Man, Jesus Christ. This is the Gospel.
What does “Gospel” mean? Good news: that God became man. This is the joyful message foretold in the Old Testament: “Emmanuel—God with us.” This is the Gospel, the good news. These things are truly of the greatest importance. And now, God willing, let us bring today’s talk to a close. “And at the beginning of the Epistle to the Romans he says.” At the beginning, in the introduction to the Epistle to the Romans, he says: “Who was born of the seed of David according to the flesh”—Romans 1:3. “Who was born of the seed of David,” according to the flesh, according to His human nature. He then continues: “Having accepted, therefore, the One born of David, inquire what the prophecy says.”
Therefore, once you have been persuaded by the prophecy concerning the One born of David, hear what it says: “And on that day,” says the Prophet Isaiah, in Isaiah 11:10, “there shall be the root of Jesse, and He who rises to rule the nations; in Him shall the nations hope.” What does this mean? On that day, the One who rises to rule, the One who will arise as ruler, is the root of Jesse. Who is Jesse? David’s father. And what will this One be? He will rule the nations—not merely Israel, but all the nations. “In Him shall the nations hope,” says Isaiah.
The nations will place their hope in Him. In Him—not Israel alone; from then on, all the nations will hope in Him. My dear friends, the One who was to be born, the One from the seed of David, transcends the very age of the universe. He transcends nations and peoples. He is the Savior of the world, the hope of all creation, the hope of mankind. But, God willing, we shall continue.

Μένω λίγο στο όνομα και θα ξαναγυρίσω στο θέμα της Παρθένου. Το όνομα Εμμανουήλ είναι προφητικό. Αν διαβάσετε στο κατά Ματθαίον Ευαγγέλιον, θα δείτε το εξής: κάνει αναφορά στον προφήτη Ησαΐαν ο Ευαγγελιστής και λέγει λίγο πιο κάτω «καὶ καλέσουσι τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ἐμμανουήλ» και λέει λίγο πιο κάτω ότι ο Άγγελος εμφανίζεται και λέει στην Θεοτόκο —συγγνώμη— στον Ιωσήφ, ότι θα καλέσει το όνομα του παιδίου Ιησούν. Ίσως ένας επιπόλαιος μελετητής θα μπορούσε να πει ότι εδώ υπάρχει μία ασυνέπεια. Πώς «Εμμανουήλ» λέει ο προφήτης και πώς ο Άγγελος λέει «Ιησούς»;
Τώρα θα πάρει σωρεία μαρτυριών για να δείξει τη βασιλική γενιά του Ιησού Χριστού, για να επαληθευθεί η προφητεία. Διότι εκεί είναι η μεγάλη αξία. Θα μου πείτε: «Γιατί τα λέμε όλα αυτά;» Αν, αγαπητοί μου, καταδείξουμε ότι ο προφητευθείς είναι ο Ιησούς Χριστός, διότι ουδείς άλλος προεφητεύθη, σημαίνει ότι είναι αληθής Θεός. Και συνεπώς, ε, τι άλλο; Εάν είναι ο Ιησούς Χριστός ο αληθής Θεός που έγινε άνθρωπος, τι άλλο θέλω; Τότε εκεί είναι η σωτηρία μας. «Τι θέλεις δε και μάρτυρας; Λάβε τους παίδας τους επιφωνήσαντας· Ωσαννά τω Υιώ Δαβίδ, ευλογημένος ο βασιλεύς του Ισραήλ», όπως είναι γραμμένο στο Ματθαίο 21, 9. Τι εφώναζε ο λαός όταν ο Ιησούς Χριστός έμπαινε μέσα στα Ιεροσόλυμα;
Πριν μπει στα Ιεροσόλυμα, έγινε εκείνο το γνωστό περιστατικό που είπε στους μαθητές, στους δύο μαθητές: «Πηγαίνετε, βρείτε έναν πώλο». Είναι κατά θαυμαστό δε τρόπο και εκείνο, κατά θαυμαστό. «Πάρτε το πουλαράκι», δηλαδή ζώο, το μικρό γαϊδουράκι, που δεν κάθισε ποτέ κανένας απάνω. Αυτό σπουδαίο. Τι να πρωτοπεί κανείς;
Απανωτές είναι οι αποδείξεις, απανωτές. Και το πήρε ο Κύριος και κάθισε πάνω. Προσέξτε, δεν κάθισε πάνω σε υπερήφανο άλογο. Είναι εκείνο που λέγαμε μια περασμένη φορά: Πες, βασιλιάς· ποιο το σημάδι του βασιλιά; Ποιος βασιλιάς μπαίνει θριαμβευτικά στην πόλη του θριάμβου καθισμένος πάνω σε γάιδαρο; Με συγχωράτε, ποιος βασιλιάς μπήκε με γάιδαρο μέσα σε πόλη;
