Summary

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem’s extensive use of Old Testament prophecy teaches that Scripture itself provides the key for interpreting prophecy and parables. The image of rain silently descending upon fleece signifies the quiet union of divinity and humanity in Christ, whose birth remained hidden from Herod and the Magi. Isaiah’s promise that God would save his people by healing the blind, deaf, lame, and mute is fulfilled in Jesus Christ, toward whom all the prophecies converge.

Beloved, we are now in the eighth paragraph of the twelfth chapter of the Catechetical Lectures of Saint Cyril. This is where we left off last time, but one final passage remains, one last point concerning a prophecy. It is very beautiful, and so I do not want to pass it by. I would simply like to tell you that the Holy Father cites many prophecies from the Old Testament in order to demonstrate and firmly establish the point he wishes to make—namely, the divine-human nature of Jesus Christ, or whatever other subject he is addressing. He draws richly upon the prophets for his proofs, and there is one very important feature I would like us to notice. When examining the prophecies, he might have used one or two, but instead he uses three, four, or five prophecies for a single subject. This gives us a wonderful opportunity to learn how prophecy is interpreted. Believe me, once someone has learned the method of interpreting many prophecies, then, if he encounters a prophecy he did not previously know, he will be able to interpret it because he holds the key to interpretation. For the key

to the interpretation and understanding of Holy Scripture is contained within Holy Scripture itself. In other words, if we are given the opportunity to learn how to interpret it, we will also be able to interpret passages unfamiliar to us. When the Lord, for example, tells the parable of the Sower, along with two or three other parables, and then interprets that parable Himself, do you know what He gives us? He gives us the key by which we can understand the remaining parables. For if the Lord had not given us the key to interpreting a parable, we would not know how it should be interpreted, and a multitude of conflicting interpretations would arise.

This, then, is how the key is given. The same applies to prophecy, and I earnestly ask you to pay attention to it. It is striking how carefully the early Christians attended to prophecy. One sees this clearly in the Catechetical Lectures. Today, whether we offer catechesis to children or to adults, we do not pay much attention to the prophetic element; it is not richly present in our teaching. And this is a shortcoming. Does that surprise you? Do not tell me that the Millennialists Judaize. Of course they Judaize, because they are entirely outside Christianity, since they do not accept the Triune God. They are not merely a heresy. They are not a heresy; they are something beyond heresy, something altogether different. Would you like to call them a religion? Then call them that. Something is called a heresy when the foundations remain the same—for example, that God is Triune—but there is deviation on other points. Here there is not even faith in the Triune God, and consequently this is something different. It is not, therefore, a heresy; it is something worse. Yet consider them for a moment. Does it not strike you that they make very extensive use of the prophetic word, of prophecy? They use prophecy a great deal. It makes no difference that, because they do not possess the Spirit of God, they interpret it incorrectly. But is it not shameful, or at least strange,

that we ourselves do not make use of the prophetic element? I would be happy, my beloved, if through these gatherings around patristic texts we might eventually come to love the prophetic word and pay close attention to it. After all, the Apostle Peter says precisely this: “You do well,” he says, “to pay attention to the prophetic word, for it is a lamp shining in a dark and rugged place, until,” he says, “the morning star rises in our hearts,” and so forth. Therefore, the prophetic element is a serious matter. And now I return, as I told you, to the eighth paragraph, where the Holy Father cites one final prophecy—the last prophecy in this paragraph.

It is very, very interesting. He says, “And another of the prophets said.” Who was it? It was David. This is the seventeenth Psalm, verse ten: “He bowed the heavens and came down, and thick darkness was beneath His feet.” In other words, He lowered—“He bowed”—the heavens. It is just as if we were to say: I want to jump down from a height, but I take that height into account because the jump could cost me dearly; I might be hurt or injured. So I lower the height. Imagine an elevator: I lower it so that I may descend.

This is the meaning of the verb in the phrase “He bowed the heavens”: He lowered the heavens, as though the heavens were a floor upon which God stood. Now God wishes to descend to the earth, but He does not jump. He lowers the heavens and can thus come to the earth—by lowering them, not by jumping. “And He came down”: He descended. “And thick darkness”: this means a dark cloud, an impenetrable cloud through which you cannot see. There can also be a light covering of cloud, just as there can be a light mist through which we can see for some distance. Thank you.

With a light cloud covering the sky, we can still see the sun. Even if its disk—that is, its many rays, as we were saying—is veiled, we can still make out the disk itself. But here, “thick darkness” means a cloud through which nothing can pass: a black, dark, impenetrable cloud. That is the thick darkness. It is “beneath His feet,” beneath the feet of God. What, then, do we have? God descends through the bowing of the heavens, but beneath His feet is something that ultimately conceals Him. To use a modern expression, we have God’s revelation and God’s concealment. In revealing Himself, God conceals Himself.

He cannot reveal Himself unless He simultaneously conceals Himself. Thus, I have revelation and concealment. And do you know what that concealment is? It is the human body, human nature. It is the Incarnation. What, then, is the thick darkness beneath His feet? It is the Incarnation, through which you cannot see the divinity. This is the thick darkness: it is the human body of Jesus Christ. You cannot see the divinity; the cloud is impenetrable. And, of course, it is hardly necessary for me to tell you this. You already know it, and we have said it on other occasions: not even the angels have seen the divinity, and certainly not the demons. No created being,

whether noetic or non-noetic, has ever seen or is able to see the divine nature, because the thick darkness is there. Moreover, when Moses spoke with God on Sinai, there was thick darkness, and it is called the divine darkness. This is how Saint Cyril now interprets the passage: “For the descent from heaven was unknown to mankind.” It “was unknown”; people could not comprehend that God would descend from heaven. This, then, is a most beautiful prophecy. Those who read the Psalter know it very well and repeat it often. Let them understand, therefore, that it concerns

the Incarnation of God, and so they can rejoice in this prophecy. And now, beloved, we come to the ninth paragraph. “Then Solomon, hearing his father David say these things, and having built a wondrous house, and foreseeing the One who would come into it, said in amazement: ‘Will God truly dwell with men upon the earth?’” David, of course, came before Solomon, since he was Solomon’s father. And David wrote those Psalms that he did write, although not all the Psalms are his. Solomon, his son, now keeps in mind this prophecy of his father David—“He bowed the heavens and came down”—and builds a house for God. Since God will descend to the earth, Solomon builds Him a house. God dwells in the temple Solomon built in the following sense. Indeed, perhaps we ought to understand the reasons for the existence of temples, although we discussed this previously when examining the Books of Kingdoms. Solomon lists many such reasons at the dedication of the temple. He says: “Here people will come to speak of their pain and lay their troubles before You, so that You may hear them. Here, in times of national calamity, they will

come and pray, so that You may hear them.” Of course, this might give the false impression that God dwells only in the temple and is not present outside it. But God is everywhere present. Stephen says, “God does not dwell in temples made by hands.” Yet bear in mind that God Himself commanded His temple to be built. And He gave not merely the command itself: the temple’s architecture, its structure, and its materials were all prescribed by God. That alone is enough for us to say that this is how God wills it. Where are the Millennialists who ask, “What do you need temples for?” God Himself commands that things should be this way. I will go there, just as we say, for example,

that when the priest stands before the Holy Altar, he stands before the face of God. You know that the Holy Altar is the glory of God, and therefore the priest stands before the glory of God. There he must stand reverently. At the side, or behind the Holy Altar, he is not standing before the face of God. But God is everywhere present. Yes, but this is how God wills it to be. He comes down, so to speak, to the measure of human understanding, because this is how man needs to understand. We shall see this point—how man needs to understand—a little further on, where Daniel is mentioned. Perhaps we shall not reach it today. Daniel says that when the Archangel Michael came and spoke to him, he could not utter a single word. He fell to the ground—this happened there in Babylon—and was completely overwhelmed.

Only when the Archangel Michael assumed human form was Daniel able to answer him. Man cannot perceive God unless God presents Himself through anthropomorphic images and descriptions of human actions and emotions. This is why we say that before the Holy Altar is the glory of God, and there we stand before the face of God. Does that surprise you? I will prove it to you immediately in actual practice. There are so many things of this kind that perhaps we have never examined closely. Why is a young boy who enters the sanctuary, a man serving there, or the sacristan permitted to pass behind the Holy Altar, but not permitted to pass in front of it? For this very reason.

For this very reason. Even I, the priest, whenever it has happened—I do not know how many times—pause for a moment before passing. Not even the priest may simply pass in front when he has some duty that takes him from one end of the sanctuary to the other. He must go behind the Holy Altar. He will stand before the Holy Altar only when he has a prayer or supplication to offer, or something of that kind. The priest is also forbidden to have his head covered before the Holy Altar, and so forth. Thus we see that the Temple in those days was the place where people could ask for what they needed. Did God say, “I will hear you only inside the Temple”?

Do we have instances in which God hears people outside the Temple? Yes, but those are exceptional cases. God hears within the Temple. Why? Because He wills it so. There is no further “why”; He wills it so. Solomon, then, builds a temple for God on the basis of this prophecy of his father, and in amazement he says—is this not in Third Kingdoms 8:27? Listen to the astonishing thing he says. He puts it as a question: “Will God truly, actually, dwell upon the earth?” Indeed, why does God will to be worshipped within the Temple? It is a type of the Incarnation, in the sense that His human nature would occupy a particular place. Yes, it was a type. God the Word (Logos), as God the Word, is everywhere present. As man upon the earth, He was in a particular place. It is another matter that His human nature is also everywhere present because of the hypostatic union. That is, we have one person, not two persons: one person in two natures, the divine and the human. Because, then, of this hypostatic—that is, personal—union, this personal or hypostatic union,

the human nature of Christ is also everywhere present. But that is another subject. We see, then, that Solomon marvels. And this is the crucial human question: “Can God truly dwell upon the earth?” Yes, He can. You know that this was also a question among the Gentiles, the pagans. We see this, of course, in what we might call secular literature. We encounter many such examples. But I shall mention one familiar to us from the New Testament. When Paul and Barnabas came to Lystra and began to speak, Barnabas was majestic in appearance, but he did not speak.

Paul was very small in stature, but he spoke a great deal. A miracle had just taken place: there was a lame man where they were speaking, and they made him well; he was healed. So the people took Barnabas for Zeus—Luke tells us this—and Paul, because he was the speaker, for Hermes. They brought animals to sacrifice before them, saying, “The gods have visited us.” Again we encounter the question: “Can God dwell with men upon the earth?” Despite the crude behavior of the city’s inhabitants in wishing to offer sacrifice, and despite the crowd’s later fury when the Jews planted hostile intentions

in the minds of the people and they stoned Paul—so that the crowd’s disposition changed from good to evil—the point remains that this pagan world had also been prepared to ask the question: “Can God dwell among us?” The answer is: He can. Moreover, remember the original question we have been examining in these recent talks. I shall read it as Saint Cyril states it: “What, then, was the cause that brought God down into humanity?” Forgive me, forgive me; the second question is: “And was it at all possible for God to live among mankind?”

Is it possible for this God to associate with human beings? This is the greatest thorn in human logic—or rather, not in logic, but in rationalism. And who, do you suppose, opened the road to rationalism? Greek philosophy. Do not accuse me for saying so, do not accuse me. More particularly, it was Platonic philosophy, with its teaching that God has no relationship whatsoever with matter, of which He is not the creator. This opened the way to opposition.

That is why the Church condemned Platonism in the person of Origen. This condemnation rests upon a correct, basic, and fundamental principle: Platonism opened the way to opposition against the truth that God can become incarnate, that God can become man—God among us. Plato wants God to remain very high above, supposedly so that we do not soil Him. This is why those who reason rationalistically say, “What do you take God for? Do you make Him equal to us? Is God now going to involve Himself with us?” Yes, gentlemen, God does involve Himself with us. Yes, indeed. You see how rationalism immediately intrudes: “Is that possible?” it asks.

“David anticipated the cloud when, in the psalm entitled ‘For Solomon,’” he said—yes, David again anticipated this in that psalm associated with Solomon—“He shall come down like rain upon a fleece.” This is Psalm 71. “God shall come down like rain upon a fleece: rain because of what is heavenly, and upon a fleece because of His humanity.” God, he says, will descend. He will come down like rain. Literally, the word here means a heavy rain. But...

...there it refers to moisture. Notice that this image—rain falling upon wool, for the fleece is sheep’s wool—was requested as a miraculous sign by Gideon. He said, “If I am to defeat the Philistines, O Lord—you have told me to gather only a few men and wage war against them—then, if this is truly so, give me a sign. I will put a fleece outdoors overnight. If moisture falls upon it but not upon the surrounding ground, so that the grass around it remains dry and only the fleece is wet, I will accept that what You have told me is true.” And so the rain came upon the fleece: the dew fell upon the wool but not upon the surrounding ground. Then Gideon reversed the sign and asked a second time: “Lord, I do not know; perhaps I was mistaken. Now I want the dew to fall everywhere around it, but not upon the fleece.” The next night he put the fleece outside again. When morning came, the grass and everything around it were covered with moisture, but the fleece was dry. This was a miracle. At the same time, it was also a prophecy. Forgive me.

It also becomes a prophecy. The prophecy belongs to David, while the miracle belongs to Gideon, and David and Gideon lived in different periods. This is what I have told you before: to confirm a truth, I may have two miracles associated with one teaching—a first miracle, a second, and a third. Or I may have one prophecy, then a second and a third. I may also have both a miracle and a prophecy. In this way, a teaching is confirmed. And what is the teaching? That God will become incarnate. The miracle is given through Gideon, and the prophecy through David. “He shall come down,” it says, “like rain upon a fleece.” He will descend like rain...

...like moisture upon wool. And what is the rain? Here we are given the key, so that we may learn how to interpret. Saint Cyril says, “Because of what is heavenly”—because of the divinity, for the divinity descends. And what is the fleece? He says that it signifies humanity, the human nature. Thus, when the rain descends upon the wool, it signifies divinity and humanity being united. What do we have, then? The divine and human nature of Christ. He then says something else that is very beautiful: “For rain, when it descends upon a fleece, descends without a sound.” Because the mystery of the birth remained unknown, the Magi asked, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews?” And Herod, troubled, inquired about the One who had been born and asked:

“Where is Christ to be born?” As you know, when moisture falls, it falls without a sound. The Greek word psophos means a noise or sound. What, then, does apsopha mean? Silently. We all know that moisture settles upon the earth silently; it makes no noise at all. Saint Cyril explains that the Incarnation took place without fanfare, in silence. The proof is that the Magi asked where the King of the Jews was, and Herod asked where Christ was to be born. Why?

Because the Incarnation took place without a sound, in silence. We now come to the tenth paragraph. “Who, then, is He who thus descends?” He continues: “And He shall endure with the sun, and before the moon, from generation to generation.” This again is Psalm 71, verse 5. Who is the One who descends? Here Saint Cyril seeks to identify Him. The One who will descend, he says, “shall endure with the sun, and before the moon, from generation to generation.” Like the sun abiding there in the firmament, He will remain throughout all generations.

“Before the moon.” Listen: who has ever been born upon earth and could endure as the sun endures? We therefore see that this is no ordinary man. Who can remain as the sun remains? Of course, the sun is a heavenly body.

The comparison is simply relative; the sun is being used as a point of comparison. It is like the words of the Synoptic Evangelists concerning the Transfiguration of Christ: His face shone like the sun. The phrases “like the sun” or “brighter than the sun” provide a means of comparison, because nothing else upon earth could be found...

...to serve as such a comparison. We all think of the sun as always remaining, as though it were eternal and immortal. This is a popular understanding, not an astronomical one. Do not forget that Holy Scripture speaks in the language of ordinary people. It seeks to be understood by everyone, using thoroughly familiar images and examples rather than scientific ones. So it takes the sun and says that His life will be like the sun: He will remain forever; that is, He is eternal. Since no human being is eternal, who, then, is He? “And again, another of the prophets says: Rejoice greatly, daughter of Zion.”

“Proclaim it, daughter of Jerusalem: behold, your King comes to you, righteous and bringing salvation.” The Prophet Zechariah says this in chapter 9, verse 9. Another prophet tells her to rejoice with exceedingly great joy. The daughter of Zion is Jerusalem. “Proclaim it, daughter of Jerusalem”—proclaim this, O Jerusalem. Behold, your King comes, righteous and bringing salvation.

He said, “Your King comes, righteous and bringing salvation.” But there have been many kings. Saint Cyril says, “Explain to us, O prophet: of whom are you speaking?” You see the element of dialogue within his Catechetical Lectures. His words are directed toward the prophet: “Explain it to us, prophet; tell us more,” and so forth, bringing the discourse to life. We might compare it to Plato’s use of dialogue. The text has this inward, dialogical form. Explain to us whom you mean, for many kings have passed through Israel. Which king will this be? “Give us a sign that other kings do not possess.” Give us a sign...

...that no other king possesses. “If you say that he wears purple, the distinction of such apparel has already been claimed by kings.” If you say that he wears purple, well, kings have worn purple. “If you say that he is surrounded by spear-bearing soldiers and seated in gold-inlaid chariots,” even chariots set with gold and precious stones, “this too has already been claimed by others.” Other kings have done that as well. “Give us a sign peculiar to the King whose coming you proclaim.” Give us a distinctive sign belonging only to this King whose coming you foretell. And the prophet...

...answers: “Behold, your King comes to you, righteous and bringing salvation, humble and mounted upon a beast of burden, upon a young colt, not upon a chariot.”

He says that your King—this gentle King who is righteous and brings salvation—comes humble, gentle, and seated upon the back of a young donkey. This King does not come in a chariot, but upon the back of a young donkey, upon a colt, the young of a beast of burden. “You have a unique sign of the King who has come. Jesus alone among kings sat upon an unbroken colt, entering Jerusalem amid acclamations as a King.”

What king has ever entered a city in triumph while seated upon a little donkey? None. They all came upon horses, armed and escorted by soldiers, and so forth. This is your sign, says the Prophet Zechariah. He will enter your city, and you will acclaim Him. The multitude did acclaim Him as “the King of the Jews,” while He sat upon a little donkey. This is the feast of Palm Sunday that we celebrate. There is the sign.

We proceed to the eleventh paragraph. “But He rode upon a colt and sat upon it. Give us yet another sign: where will the King who enters stand?” Very well, give us one more sign. Where will the King stand? “And give us a sign not far from the city, lest we fail to recognize it.” Do not name some place far from Jerusalem, lest we know nothing of it. “Give us a sign plainly visible to our eyes and close at hand, so that even while we are within the city we may see the place” where He will stand. The prophet answers once more: “And on that day His feet shall stand upon the Mount of Olives...”

“...which faces Jerusalem on the east.” “On that day.” Look: today we speak of the great day that will come at Christ’s Second Coming. In the same way, the prophets spoke of His First Coming: “On that day.” And that day came, just as the day of Christ’s Second Coming will also come. The words are so vivid that they should shake us, my beloved. The prophets are astonishing; they move us to the depths. “On that day,” he says, His feet will stand upon the Mount of Olives. The Lord set out from the Mount of Olives and entered Jerusalem. Do you see, I ask you? Now we come to the twelfth paragraph. We have two signs. You have spoken well to us...

...O Prophet of God, “and we desire to learn a third.” We want you to tell us a third sign as well. “Tell us: what will the Lord do when He comes?” Another prophet says: “Behold our God,” and what follows. “He Himself will come and save us.” He will come and save us. “Then”—this is Isaiah, chapter 35—“the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall hear. Then the lame man shall leap like a deer, and the tongue of the mute shall speak clearly.” Then the eyes of the blind will be opened, and the ears of the deaf will hear.

The lame will leap, and the tongue of the mute will speak clearly. These are the things He will do when He comes. And these are the things Christ did. Tell me: suppose that, by coincidence, one prophecy happened to fit, though He were not the true Christ. How, then, do all the prophecies fit the person of Christ? Jesus is like the focal point of a converging lens. Just as a lens gathers all the rays passing through it into one focal point, so all the prophecies converge upon a single point: the person of Jesus Christ. Is that mere chance? There is not the slightest trace here...

...of coincidence or chance—not the slightest trace. There is such a wondrous harmony that all these prophecies are fulfilled completely in the person of Christ alone. Therefore, He is the incarnate Son of God. “Let yet another testimony be given to us.” Saint Cyril presses the point further. “Tell us another testimony,” he says. “We want you to tell us still more.” “You say, O prophet, that the One who comes is the Lord—that is, God—and that He will perform signs, miracles such as no one has ever performed. What other clear sign can you give us?” Tell us something else that is unmistakably clear. And the prophet answers...

The Prophet Isaiah answers, in Isaiah 3:14: “The Lord Himself will come for judgment with the elders of the people and with their rulers.” When this King comes, He will be judged by the elders and rulers of that people. And Saint Cyril says: “An extraordinary sign: the Master is judged and accused by elders who are His servants.” So the elders will judge the King? Can a king be judged by the elders? What an extraordinary sign! Christ was condemned—that is, sentenced—by the rulers and the elders.

The thirteenth paragraph. “The Jews read these things, yet they do not hear. For their hearts have grown dull.” They put plugs in the ears of their hearts so that they would not hear. But we believe in Jesus Christ, who came in the flesh, assuming human nature and becoming man, “because otherwise we could not contain Him. For since we could neither look upon Him as He is nor enjoy communion with Him, He became what we are, so that we might thus be counted worthy to enjoy Him.” Because we could not see Him as He is,

He became exactly what we are, so that we might delight in Him and behold Him. My dear friends, this is profoundly important. He became what we are so that we could see Him. Of course, the Incarnation has many aspects, as we said last time. But if we accept that first point I mentioned then—what we called God’s prior will, if you remember—what was it? That even if Adam had not fallen, we would still have had the Incarnation of the Son of God. The Son of God would have become man simply because He willed to do so. This fits wonderfully with that prior will, that preceding will of God.

So that we might see Him, because we could not see Him as He is. This is what the words mean: “He bowed the heavens.” He descended. He descended so that we might see Him. Do you know why He opened the eyes of the blind? So that they might see the incarnate Son of God—not merely the light of the sun, but the incarnate Son of God. Do you know what will be our chief concern in the Kingdom of God? The vision of the incarnate Son of God. In His Kingdom, Christ will not cast off His human nature; rather, through His human nature we shall behold God. And Saint Cyril explains:

“If we cannot gaze steadily upon the sun, which was made on the fourth day, how could we behold God, its invisible Creator? The Lord descended in fire upon Mount Sinai, and the people could not endure it, but said to Moses: ‘You speak to us, and we will listen; but do not let God speak to us, lest we die.’” The divine glory descended—just a trace of the divine glory. The mountain burned with fire upon Sinai, and the Jews, the Hebrews, could not endure it. They begged Moses that God should speak to Moses, and not directly to the people.

“We cannot bear it; we cannot endure it.” And when Moses came down, he placed a veil over his face, because they could not look upon the divinised face of Moses. And again: “For what flesh has ever heard the voice of the living God speaking from the midst of the fire and lived?” Who has ever heard the voice of God and been able to live? “If merely hearing the voice of God speaking brings death, how could seeing God Himself not cause death? And why do you marvel? Moses himself says, ‘I am terrified and trembling.’” If you could not live after merely hearing God’s voice, how could you possibly behold the face of God, the glory of God? And why are you astonished? Moses himself says that he stood there

“terrified and trembling.” This, then, is why He comes to save us in a gentle and accessible way, through His human nature. The fourteenth paragraph. “What then? Would you have wished Him who came for our salvation to become the cause of our destruction because human beings could not bear Him? Or should He not have measured out His grace according to our capacity?” What would you have wanted? For God to come and save us, only for us to be destroyed in the end if He had come as He is? Later I will tell you what I mentioned at the beginning, concerning Daniel. We have reached the passage in Daniel: the vision, as I told you before, of Michael, of Gabriel. Daniel could not behold him until he appeared as a man.

And when the one who appeared took the visible form of a man, Daniel was then able to speak. When Gabriel appeared as a man, Daniel spoke with him. Otherwise it was impossible—utterly impossible—for him to speak. “And what does he say? ‘Lord, at the sight of you, everything within me was overturned, no strength remained in me, and no breath was left in me.’” And what did he say to the angel? “When I saw you,” he says, “my inward parts were overturned within me; everything inside me was convulsed.” And who can stand before your power? And so on. “Because of this manifestation of our weakness, the Lord took upon Himself what”

man was seeking.

“For since man sought to hear from one whose appearance was like his own, the Lord assumed a nature subject to the same human sufferings, so that human beings might be taught through one like themselves.” What did God do? He did exactly what man had sought: “Let me be able to see You, but let You be like me.” And He took my form and came so that I could see Him. What wonderful things! God took my form and came so that I could see Him. Do you understand, my dear friends? Do you understand? The fifteenth paragraph. “Receive yet another reason. Christ came so that, by being baptised, He might sanctify Baptism.”

“He came to work wonders, walking upon the waters of the sea. Before His coming in the flesh, ‘the sea saw and fled, and the Jordan turned back.’ The Lord assumed a body so that the sea, seeing Him, might endure His presence and the Jordan might receive Him without fear.” This, then, is one reason; but there is also another, a second reason. If you wish, I will tell you another reason why the Son of God became man. He came, Saint Cyril says, to sanctify the waters through His Baptism. The Old Testament says the following—and this is in Psalm 113: when the Jordan saw You, it turned back.

When the Dead Sea saw the Lord, it drew back; it was divided. You know what “turned back” means here: it refers to the direction of the current. The Jordan flows out of the Sea of Galilee and empties into the Dead Sea, the lake called the Dead Sea. Thus the Jordan River connects two lakes. Clearly, the Lake of Gennesaret—also called the Sea of Tiberias or the Sea of Galilee—is at a higher elevation. The Jordan therefore flows naturally, like every river in the world. But when You appeared before the Jordan, it says, the Jordan changed the direction of its current and flowed backward.

It did not flow downhill, but uphill. Do you know when this happened? When the Israelites came before the Jordan River. Then the power of the Lord was manifested through Joshua, and the Jordan turned back. Forty years before Joshua, God Himself said to Moses: “Now you will see My power and My glory.” And the sea, the Red Sea, was divided, with the waters standing on either side. It opened and stood like a wall, just as the Jordan did, with a wall of water on either side. The riverbed appeared as dry land, and the people crossed over.

“You will see My power,” He says. The Jordan saw You, was terrified, and turned back. The Red Sea saw You and was divided in two. If God had come as He is, what within creation could have endured Him? But now You assume human nature, stand beside the Jordan River, and are baptised; and the Jordan, out of fear, does not turn back. You stand beside the Lake of Gennesaret, preach there, enter a boat, and speak to the people, yet the sea is not terrified. This is another reason for the Incarnation: that creation might not be terrified. Saint Isaac the Syrian says that this was so creation would not be set ablaze; for if God had entered creation and allowed His divine uncreated energy to be manifested openly

within it, all creation would have been set ablaze.

“Through the virgin Eve came death; therefore, through a Virgin—or rather, from a Virgin—Life had to appear, so that just as the serpent deceived the former, Gabriel might proclaim the good tidings to the latter.”

Death came through the virgin Eve. Eve was a virgin; do not forget that. The transgression took place in Paradise, and Eve was a virgin in Paradise. Outside Paradise, “Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain.” When did Eve become Adam’s wife in the conjugal sense? Outside Paradise. In Paradise, both Adam and Eve lived in virginity. Therefore Eve, as a virgin, became the cause through whom death entered humanity. It was fitting, then, that through a Virgin—or rather, from a Virgin—Life should also appear.

This is why Christ was born of a Virgin. Of course, it is not the only reason He was born of a Virgin, but it is one more reason. Why was He born of a Virgin? He was born for the reason we are discussing now. Eve, who brought death into the world, was a virgin. Therefore, she who would bring Life into the world also had to be a Virgin—and that Life is Christ. “So that just as the serpent deceived the former, Gabriel might proclaim the good tidings to the latter.” Just as the devil deceived Eve, so Gabriel had to proclaim the great event to the Virgin. “Human beings abandoned God and made...” Forgive me, forgive me.

“Human beings abandoned God and made idols in human form. Since a supposed god in human form was falsely worshipped, the true God became truly man, so that the falsehood might be destroyed.” Here is another reason why God became man. Human beings, he says, abandoned the true God and made idols. A xoanon is a small carved image made of wood. We speak, for example, of the xoanon of Athena, the wooden statue of Athena. So, he says, human beings abandoned the true God and made statues in human form—gods bearing a human likeness—and in this way they worshipped

supposed gods in human form, but these were false. Therefore, to destroy the falsehood, God came as man so that He might be worshipped. There is no end, my dear friends, to the reasons theology gives for why God became man. But, as you understand, Saint Cyril continues and has still more to tell us, because the subject of the Incarnation is profoundly important. You do well to come here; I commend you, as I always do. Do not forget that today people attack the Incarnation of God the Word (Logos).

In complete ignorance, people speak against it without ever having opened Holy Scripture. Never! They have never stopped to examine a single prophecy. They have never approached this great subject with awe. Instead, with a single stroke of the pen, people today dismiss the Incarnation of the Son of God and take their stand as blasphemers against Jesus Christ. I do not know whether any other age, here in our own Greek land, has been as blasphemous as ours. I do not know, my dear friends; I truly do not know. For this reason, please, let us ground ourselves firmly in the truth of the Incarnation of the Son of God. In this way we will help ourselves, and we will also be able to help others. And do not forget that when faith in the Incarnation of the Son of God is firmly established within us,

this is already the essential foundation, the fundamental element—the foundation of our salvation. No matter how many good works we may do, if the foundation of faith in the theandric person—the divine-human person—of Jesus Christ is absent, there is no salvation. This foundation must be present. And I say once again: the foundation of our salvation is the Incarnation of God the Word (Logos).

Γι’ αυτόν τον λόγο. Γιατί και εγώ, ο ιερεύς, όσες φορές που έχει τύχει, δεν ξέρω, κοντοστέκομαι και μετά περνώ. Δεν μπορεί ούτε ο ιερεύς να περνά, όταν έχει μια διακονία από το ένα άκρο του ιερού στο άλλο άκρο. Θα πηγαίνει πίσω από την Αγία Τράπεζα. Μπροστά στην Αγία Τράπεζα θα σταθεί μόνο όταν έχει κάτι να προσευχηθεί, μια ευχή, μια δέηση κ.λπ. Ο ιερεύς απαγορεύεται να είναι και καλυμμένος προ της Αγίας Τραπέζης και το καθεξής. Έτσι, βλέπει κανένας, και ο Ναός τότε ήταν ο τόπος που μπορούσαν οι άνθρωποι να ζητούν αυτό που ήθελαν. Έλεγε ο Θεός «Θα σε ακούσω μόνο μέσα εις τον ναόν»;

«Ὁ Χριστὸς ποῦ γεννᾶται;» Όπως ξέρετε, όταν πέφτει η υγρασία, πέφτει αψοφητί. Ψόφος θα πει θόρυβος. Θα πει θόρυβος, ψόφος, θόρυβος. Συνεπώς, άψοφα τι θα πει; Αθόρυβα. Και όλοι το ξέρουμε ότι κατεβαίνει η υγρασία επάνω στη γη αθόρυβα. Δεν κάνει καν θόρυβο. Ερμηνεύει ο Άγιος Κύριλλος και λέγει ότι έγινε η ενανθρώπιση χωρίς τυμπανοκρουσίες, αθόρυβα. Απόδειξη ότι οι μάγοι ρωτούν πού είναι ο βασιλιάς των Ιουδαίων, ο Ηρώδης ρωτά πού ο Χριστός γεννάται, γιατί;
