Summary

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem’s twelfth catechesis explains the Incarnation as part of preparing catechumens to enter the Church through baptism. The lecture distinguishes God’s prior will that the Son become human to unite creation to Himself in love from His subsequent will that Christ embrace the Cross after Adam’s fall. Prophecies concerning God dwelling among humanity and gathering every nation confirm the Incarnation and show why Christians must study the Old Testament as a light leading to Christ.

My dear friends, we are now in the eighth paragraph of the twelfth catechesis of Saint Cyril, Bishop of Jerusalem. Here Saint Cyril is explaining to those preparing for illumination the subject of the Word of God who became man and took flesh. As I have told you before, this is nothing other than an exposition of the Creed, because his purpose was for the catechumens to learn the content of the faith, to know what Christianity is,

so that, fully prepared by this knowledge, they might enter the Church through Baptism. You see, this is the glory of the Church. Today, because of infant Baptism, catechesis does not take place beforehand, so it must take place afterward. But moving catechesis until afterward does not mean that we should neglect it simply because we have already been baptized. This is the godparent’s solemn responsibility: both to provide catechesis personally and to help the godchild advance into the boundless riches contained in the faith. I have said this many times, and I say it once again: the godparent’s role is of great importance; it is not secondary.

The godparent’s presence at Baptism is not merely decorative—not simply a social arrangement so that we may have godfathers and godmothers, exchange gifts, and choose wealthy godparents to bring all sorts of presents to the godchild, only to complain if they bring nothing. Let us pay close attention to this matter, my dear friends. The godparent’s role is very delicate. Would you like to see just how important and delicate it is? There is indeed a Canon of the Church: if the same godparent baptizes a boy and a girl, those two children cannot marry one another. Unfortunately, the civil authorities have disregarded this. The children share a spiritual kinship. Their marriage is not permitted. Do you know why?

Someone might ask, “How can that be?” Listen, then, to where this spiritual kinship lies and why such a marriage is not permitted. We say that siblings must not marry. Biological reasons are certainly involved, but moral reasons come first. Children who grow up beneath the same roof must have a proper reverence for one another. Suppose a boy knew that he might one day marry his own sister. Can you imagine what would happen in every home and what a collapse of morality would follow? Therefore, it is not only a matter of biology. I believe that God establishes biological laws as a barrier supporting the moral reasons,

so that there may be no abuse of the matter, for that would be truly dreadful. The very roof sheltering a family would cover a corrupt situation. Do you understand? The catechumen—or the catechumens—entrusted to a godparent should gather together in the godparent’s home. We might say that they are to sit at the same desk and receive teaching and catechesis from their godparent. But when they attend the same school and sit at the same desk—do not judge this by the small schools of today; as we have said, things are different now—there would be the danger that the boy might fall in love with the girl, since

both are being taught the sacred teachings together by the same godparent. To safeguard this arrangement, so that boys and girls may remain pure and upright while receiving instruction, the Church quite rightly says, “They are brother and sister to one another.” Just as siblings cannot marry, neither can you fall into temptation and say, “I shall marry the girl sitting beside me,” merely because she is beside you. This is forbidden, because those receiving instruction must be able to attend the godparent’s place of teaching without any hindrance or distraction.

The Church safeguards this matter. Do you understand? It is extremely important—very important indeed. Saint Cyril, then, is speaking to the catechumens and explaining the Creed to them. Let us now consider his words, my dear friends. As I told you last time, in this catechesis he raises three questions of the greatest importance and answers them. The first is: “What cause, then, was so great that God should descend into humanity?” What was that cause, that momentous occasion, which led God to descend among humankind

and become man? This is an immense question, an immense question indeed. Why did You come, O Lord? We examined this by saying that we must not forget how great humanity’s wound was. Humanity was wounded “from the feet even to the head,” as Isaiah says. No one was able to heal humanity’s wound: neither the righteous of the Old Testament nor the prophets. Therefore, He Himself had to come—or, as we say in the Divine Liturgy, neither an angel nor a man, but God Himself came to heal the wound. The second question is whether...

the nature of God can dwell among human beings, and the third is whether He could be born of a Virgin. For now, however, we remain with the first question, which concludes with paragraph eight, before moving on to the second. I shall read half the paragraph, because we examined the other half last time. He says:

“Then another of the prophets, hearing this, says to the one proclaiming God’s salvation: ‘You are speaking quietly.’” You are speaking here about God’s coming, yet you speak in hushed tones. “You proclaim God’s coming and salvation in secret.” Tell us plainly, for you are speaking about salvation! And so the prophet speaks. Which prophet? Isaiah, in chapter 40, verses 9–10: “Go up upon a high mountain, you who proclaim good tidings to Zion; say to the cities of Judah...” What am I to say? “Behold our God! Behold, the Lord comes with strength.”

“Go up,” he says, “upon the high mountain of Zion and speak to the cities belonging to the tribe of Judah.” What am I to say? Saint Cyril interrupts the prophet with this question, and the prophet answers: “Behold our God!” There is our God! Who will ascend Mount Zion? The prophet. And what will he proclaim there to all the cities of Judah? “Behold our God!” There is our God! A careless reader might pass over these words without giving them any thought. He might ask, “What does this mean, ‘There is our God’?” Do you know what these words, “Behold our God,” correspond to?

Later the Evangelist—forgive me—Saint John the Baptist will say: “Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.” The Prophet Isaiah says “Behold” with the eyes of the nous, because he lived eight hundred years before Christ. Saint John the Baptist, now seeing with his bodily eyes, will say, “Behold! There He is! The One of whom Isaiah spoke—there He is. This is He.” Who is He? The One now walking along the banks of the Jordan River. Behold, this is the Son. My dear friends, I beg you, let us grasp the reality of this: God among us. And this is also the second question that follows...

But I want to continue, because I wish to complete the first question. God among us! To me, this is inconceivable. Yet this inconceivable thing became reality. God descends—but why? Because humanity’s wound is great. That is the principal cause. Or is there perhaps another cause as well? Here I shall tell you something I have told you before. Either you did not notice it, or you do not remember it, or perhaps not everyone heard it. So I shall say it again, and I beg you to pay close attention. This great truth is not emphasized, because another explanation has prevailed:

“Humanity’s wound was great.” That position came to prevail, while another did not—the one expressing what is called God’s prior or antecedent will. What is it? It is deeply revelatory. Holy Scripture mentions it, for we cannot say anything that Holy Scripture does not say. The Fathers also examine it, though they do not dwell upon it as much. As I have told you, the first is overshadowed by the second: humanity’s great wound and, therefore, the Cross. What, then, is this other truth? With regard to the great Mystery of the Incarnation, God had two wills.

This great Mystery of the Incarnation is the “Mystery kept silent,” meaning hidden, or the Mystery “hidden throughout the ages.” Paul says that God—the Father—revealed it to him. Naturally, it was not revealed only to Paul, but also to the other disciples. Yet Paul ranks among the pre-eminent Apostles and is inferior to them in nothing. “He revealed to me,” Paul says, “the Mystery kept silent through eternal ages.” Tell us, holy Apostle Paul, what is this Mystery that remained silent throughout eternal ages, hidden both from human history and from the angels? Thank you.

It was hidden still more from the demons—far more. The Mystery was that the Son of God would become man. This is the silent and incomprehensible Mystery: that God Himself, the Creator, should become part of creation; that the Maker should become a creature; that the transcendent God should enter the created world and become visibly present within it. Inconceivable! Truly inconceivable—a genuine Mystery. It is well known that there are two great and supreme Mysteries. The first is that God is Triune: one essence and three Persons. The second is this Mystery kept silent—the Incarnation of the Son of God. And so, God...

has one will concerning the Incarnation. But because He is God and exists beyond time, He sees that man will sin. He will allow man to sin because man is free. Adam’s sin would then frustrate God’s plan, and so the love of God provides a second will concerning the Incarnation. Ultimately, therefore, we have two wills of God concerning the Incarnation. The second preserves the first. Because the second is brought to the foreground, it is the one usually mentioned, while the first is not; and for precisely this reason, the first remains unknown to many. Let us examine it: God’s first will.

Take note that the words I am using are not my own; they are Patristic. They are called the antecedent and the consequent will of God—the antecedent and the consequent will. Saint Nikodemos the Hagiorite also uses these terms. If you wish to explore this subject, you may read and delight in it. Look at the final chapter of his book A Handbook of Spiritual Counsel, where he offers a defense concerning a matter of which he had been accused. Read it, and you will be astonished by what Saint Nikodemos writes there. He calls upon both the Fathers and Holy Scripture to demonstrate this antecedent will of God. What was it? It was this:

Independently of humanity’s Fall, God’s plan was to create a world and then come and dwell within it—not because He needed somewhere to dwell, but in order to express His love. He would clothe Himself in the world He had created, so that He might embrace it in a tangible way. How can I explain this “tangible way” to you? What example can I use? Suppose I have a photograph of someone very dear to me. I look upon this photograph of the person I love.

Within me burns the longing and desire to see that person. Then the hour comes when I see him. I put aside the image, the photograph, take hold of the person himself, embrace him and kiss him, and kiss him and embrace him. What does this mean? The Son of God made the world, and now He desires to embrace it, to kiss it, and to make it His own. But the world was already His. Yes, but He wished to make it His in another way—to embrace it in the manner He Himself desired. How? By Himself becoming a creature who would constitute the prototype and archetype of all creatures: a human being. Thus, the Son of God prepares this form for Himself. He prepares the human form for Himself, and according to this archetype He creates Adam. Christ, therefore, did not become a descendant of Adam by taking Adam’s image. Rather, Adam received the image of the archetype, Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the archetype. And what was the purpose? To reveal His love and to come and embrace His creation. Can the human intellect comprehend this? Tell me, can we possibly grasp it?

Let no one say, “I understand it,” because that would show simple-mindedness—not simplicity, but simple-mindedness; that is, foolishness, even stupidity. Not simplicity, but simple-mindedness. “For God so loved the world.” That word “so”—God loved the world so greatly that He sent His Son into the world, so that the world might be saved through His Son. Tell us, Lord; tell us, Saint John the Evangelist, who put this into words: how great is that “so”? How great is that love? Someone in his simple-mindedness might begin by saying, “Well, how much? A great deal.” But we cannot grasp it, my beloved.

We cannot comprehend that “so,” that immeasurable degree of love. We cannot grasp it. And what would it take for us to grasp it? Nothing can make us do so. Its length and breadth and depth will always remain a Mystery, because the love of God is beyond expression. He desires to make this world that He created His own—entirely His own—to delight in it, and for the world to delight in its Creator. Can you comprehend this? Even if Adam had not sinned, the Son of God would still have become man. This is God’s prior will, His original will. I shall say it once more: even if Adam had not sinned, the Son of God would have become man. Therefore, He did not become man merely to save us. He became man because He loved us and desired to be near us. This was in God’s plan. But Adam fell, and through his fall creation was darkened, because the antitype no longer corresponded to its prototype, its archetype. Adam is the antitype. Once he had fallen, how could he correspond to the prototype and archetype, Jesus Christ? Christ then undertook to become the New Adam. Otherwise, there would have been no need for Him to become the New Adam. Then the way of the Cross, the way of sacrifice, was chosen in order to wipe away

Adam’s great offense against God, and so the Cross enters in. What, then, is the Cross? The Cross is God’s subsequent will. There would have been no need for the Cross; there would have been no Cross. The Son of God would have become man without the Cross. But now the Cross enters in because Adam sinned, humanity continues to sin, and the gravest wound appears—a wound healed by the Cross, by the Body and Blood of Christ. Remember the parable of the Good Samaritan: “pouring on oil and wine.” It speaks of wine and oil.

In Greek, the word for mercy is spelled one way, while the word for oil is spelled another way; yet oil is a symbol of God’s mercy because it is soothing and gentle. I remind you of a verse from the Psalms which says that their words were like oil, although those words were really more like stones, like rocks. They seemed like oil, but they were stones—hypocritical words that sounded gentle but were harsh in reality. Ah, why did I mention that verse? I cited it as a point of language, to explain what oil signifies: something gentle and soothing. What, then, is the oil?

It is the mercy of God, which is gentle and soothing: “I give you My grace; I give you My mercy.” And what is the wine? It is the Mysteries; it is the Blood of Christ, which comes to save humanity. Thus the Cross enters in and is chosen as what is called God’s subsequent will—the worst possible way for humanity to be saved. What did I say? I do not want to be misunderstood: the worst way for God Himself. And what does “the worst way” mean? The most dreadful way. Saint Isaac the Syrian asks: why did God choose the Cross rather than some other way of saving humanity?

He chose the worst way for Himself in order to reveal His love. Thus, both in God’s prior will and in His subsequent will, the love of God remains at the heart of everything. This is the exceedingly great Mystery that answers the question, “Why did the Son of God become man?” It was not only because humanity’s wound was so great. Saint Cyril does not mention what I have just told you. And we must remember that no single Father of the Church exhausts every doctrinal teaching. Saint Cyril might perhaps have spoken of this later to those who were more advanced, to those already baptized. Perhaps he could not yet speak of it to the newly illumined.

Forgive me—not to the newly illumined, but to those preparing for illumination, those about to receive Baptism. The love of God was and remains sovereign. He would have come among us and remained with us forever, retaining His human nature. His nature! He would not have come only to cast it off later, as even certain Protestant heretics and Millenarians claim—that He would cast off His human nature. That will never happen. You know that Christ did not cast off His human nature in Heaven. He still possesses it, and it will remain eternally; it will be the eternal glory of the Son of God. And we shall behold God in the person of Jesus Christ, according to what He told His disciples: “He who has seen Me has seen the Father, for I and the Father are one.” In the person of Jesus Christ, the angels beheld God and glorified Him. And in the person of Christ, we too shall behold God when we enter the Kingdom of God. This is therefore an immense, immense subject, expressing, as I have told you, the love of God. My beloved, these things we are speaking about should move us deeply.

At times I hear something that discourages me a little. When we speak about these magnificent doctrinal truths—the very foundations of our moral life, for our moral life begins here and springs from these truths—people say, “When I see how greatly God loves me, then I shall say to Him, ‘I love You.’ When I know what He has done for me, then I can love Him. But how can I love Him if I do not learn what He has done for me?” Yet sometimes, to my disappointment, I hear some of you—not everyone—say, “What you are telling us is good, but give us something more practical. Speak to us, for example, about patient endurance, love, prayer, or faith and the virtues.” My beloved, we do not neglect to speak about the virtues. But we cannot reduce everything to a catalogue of virtues, because then we will fall into moralism. We would speak endlessly about morality without possessing the great reasons that move us to live according to the moral life of the Gospel. So I say again: the moral life springs from doctrine. Doctrine will make me love God. It will make me respond to God and never abandon or forsake Him. Consider, for example, what we read in the eighth chapter of Proverbs. Thank you.

The scriptural foundation for what I have told you—God’s so-called prior will—is found there, in the eighth chapter of Proverbs. What does it say? “When the Father was creating, I, Wisdom, was with Him, creating together with Him, and I delighted in dwelling among the sons of men.” And now, my beloved, having completed the answer to the first question that Saint Cyril puts to those preparing for illumination—“What cause was so great that God should descend into humanity?”—we come to the second subject, which is extraordinarily important and beautiful.

“Is it at all possible for the nature of God to dwell among human beings?” In other words, can the whole divine nature be present among human beings and live in fellowship with them?

First, understand the question. The Apostle Paul says of Jesus Christ that in Jesus Christ “all the fullness of the Godhead dwells”—I believe this is in Colossians. Do you not remember that passage? The Epistle to the Colossians is profoundly theological and ecclesiological, as is the Epistle to the Ephesians.

“In Christ all the fullness of the Godhead dwells.” All—that is, the whole of God. Let me repeat Saint Cyril’s question: “Is it at all possible for the nature of God to dwell among human beings?” “At all” is an adverb in the Greek. Is the whole of God present? And the Apostle says, “In Christ the whole fullness of the Godhead exists.” Thus, from the outset, I give the answer immediately, although we shall go on to examine it. Yes, God came among us—the whole of God—because all the fullness of the Godhead dwells in the person of Jesus Christ.

Fullness.

Not yet! There is also what the Lord said, which we mentioned earlier: “He who has seen Me has seen the Father,” because “I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me.” The Son is not separated from the Father, nor is the Holy Spirit separated from the Son and the Father. They are one essence. Therefore, the whole of God, having become man, is truly among human beings. This is astonishing; it is incomprehensible. How shall we demonstrate it? How do we know it? The prophets bear witness, as the individual events in the life of the Lord are fulfilled.

The Resurrection, the Ascension, Pentecost, and the rest are the foundations that demonstrate all these things. So I shall read. This continues the eighth paragraph: “The Lord Himself has also said: ‘Behold, I am coming, and I will dwell in your midst, says the Lord; and many nations shall take refuge in the Lord.’” The Lord Himself said this. Where did He say it? In the Old Testament. Where exactly? In the Prophet Zechariah, chapter 2, verse 14. What does He say? “Behold, I...” You know, this word “behold,” which Luke also uses very frequently in his Gospel, always seeks to draw the reader’s or listener’s attention.

“Look—behold—I am coming. Behold, I am coming.” Who is this “I”? I am God; I am the Lord; I am coming. Where are You coming, Lord? “And I will dwell in your midst.” I will pitch My dwelling among you; I will dwell among human beings. It is incomprehensible. “And many nations shall take refuge in the Lord.” Saint Cyril now says, “The Israelites rejected the salvation that came through Me.” The Israelites, when I brought them salvation...

did not accept it.

They declined it, as in the words, “Consider me excused.” You know the parable in which they said to the Lord, “Consider me excused,” and He then told His servant, “Run out to the roads and the hedges of the city and bring Me the lame, the blind, the poor, and those in rags, so that My house may be filled.” Do you know who these people in rags, the lame, and the blind are? They are the Gentiles—the Gentile world, spiritually clothed in rags and crippled. In other words, My firstborn son, Israel, did not accept the invitation. We now turn to those considered beneath everyone else, to the idolaters.

Let My house be filled; let My Kingdom and the table of My Kingdom be filled.

I am coming! “I am coming to gather all nations and tongues.” I am coming to gather every nation and every language. This is a figure of speech in which one thing is expressed in two ways. Do not misunderstand me for discussing a little grammar as well. Every nation has its own language. Thus, when He says, “all nations and all tongues,” the two expressions refer to the same reality, because every people has its language. We would therefore simply say, “all nations.” This is one of the things that gives richness to the Hebrew language, and no less to Greek, for this figure of speech is not only Hebrew but Greek as well.

This is a feature of Greek syntax, the figure known as hendiadys: one thing expressed in two ways, with two phrases. And when we use two verbs for one thing instead of one, does that not enrich our speech? Well, that is what we have here: “all the nations and tongues.” He is saying, “I will gather all the peoples of the earth.” “For He came to His own”—Saint—pardon me, this passage is from Isaiah, chapter 66. And now, Saint Cyril interweaves his own words with the prophecies. For we must not forget that, according to the Apostle Peter, prophecy is the lamp that shines “in a dark place.”

It is a rough, dangerous, slippery place. There the lamp of prophecy comes to shine upon your path, so that you may walk safely. That is why the holy Apostle Peter says, “You do well to study the prophets. You must study them.” You know, in our Church the prophetic word has survived only in the readings—and not very abundantly even there—in the readings at Vespers. What a pity! What a pity! We have undervalued the Old Testament. Is it not a shame, my beloved, that the heretics, the Protestants—I am not speaking of the Millennialists—that the Protestants study the prophets while we do not? Do you not think that in every age humanity must find Christ through the prophecies?

Only then, only once? In every age humanity must find Christ through the prophets. We must study the prophets; we must study them continually. The ancient Church made very great use of the prophets. We have forgotten them. And not only have we forgotten them, but we go so far as to say that the Old Testament is good for nothing, that it is even dangerous, that it is inferior, or that it is obsolete. It is we who have become spiritually bankrupt. By declaring the Old Testament obsolete, we have impoverished ourselves, because we are left without that light shining in a dark place, by which we may recognize Jesus Christ. This is a sorry state of affairs. And so I answer once again, for the umpteenth time,

those who say, “Oh, do you really accept these things?” And let those who say, “Are we supposed to study the Old Testament now?” hear this farther afield through these recordings. Yes, gentlemen, the Old Testament, because, as the Apostle Paul says, “All Scripture is inspired by God.” All Scripture, not merely half of it. The whole of Holy Scripture, the Old and New Testaments, is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for correction, and so forth, as the Apostle Paul says. Saint Cyril now says, “For He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.” Do you remember it? It is John, chapter 1, verse 11. “He came to His own.” What are the things that belong to Jesus Christ? Do you recognize what belongs to Jesus Christ? You have heard what they are.

“To His own”—that is, He came to what belonged to Him, and to His own people. That is the meaning of “His own.” Remember that when Christ said to Saint John the Evangelist, “Behold your mother,” he took the Theotokos into his own home. In ancient Greek, “one’s own” can mean “one’s home.” And so, “He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.” God came to His own house, and the members of His household did not receive Him. What is His house? It is the people from whom He took His flesh, His own people, the people of Israel. Did He not take on the flesh of Abraham—that is, the flesh of Abraham’s people? This is what “His own” means.

Even the Temple belongs to God, because the Temple—as we shall see shortly—was the house of God. Christ said this when the Theotokos was searching for Him: “Why were you looking for Me? Did you not know that I must be in My Father’s house?” So then, what is His own? The land and people of Israel. And who are the members of His household? His brethren according to the flesh, those who shared the same flesh as the seed of Abraham. Yet, it says, they did not receive Him. How momentous this is! Since His own people, the members of His household, did not receive Him, He then turns to the nations. This is why He said to His disciples:

“Beginning from here, you will bear witness—from Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, throughout Palestine, and to the ends of the earth. You will go and bear witness.” And now Saint Cyril says here: “You are coming—but what do You grant to the nations?” “I come to gather all the nations, and I will leave a sign among them.” From the blood of My struggle upon the Cross, Saint Cyril now says, I take a royal seal and place it upon the forehead of each of My soldiers.

The prophecy is found in chapter 66, the final chapter of the Prophet Isaiah, verse 18. “I am coming,” He says, “to gather all the nations and to leave a sign among them.” My beloved, I could not resist the compelling grandeur of it, so I brought the Old Testament with me in order to read you the prophecy from the Prophet Isaiah. I will read it now, because here, of course, the holy Father quotes only what he needs. I shall read a little farther, because it concerns us. That is why I told you that I could not resist, and brought the Old Testament so that you might see this for yourselves. So I shall read.

“To gather all the nations and tongues.” I am coming to gather all the nations and tongues. “And they shall come and see My glory.” Who shall see it? The peoples. “And I will leave a sign among them, and I will send from among them those who have been saved to the nations.” I will send some from among them—not all of them, but some from among them—

those who have been saved. Some of them, a few, will have been saved, and they will be sent back to the nations, from among the nations themselves. “To Tarshish, and Put, and Lud, and Meshech, and Tubal, and to Greece, and to the distant islands, who have not heard My name nor seen My glory; and they shall proclaim My glory among the nations.” What a beautiful prophecy! We have received the great honor of seeing our Greece included in Holy Scripture. I did not translate it; I read the text itself—the Septuagint text, of course. I did not translate it. I shall repeat it.

“To Tubal, and to Greece, and to the distant islands.” And do you know which islands are meant by “the distant islands”? The islands distant from Israel are Cyprus and Crete, Greek islands.

You know that Rhodes is also mentioned in the Old Testament, in the Book of Genesis—and, most remarkably, under its ancient name, as is Cyprus. Its people are called the Kittians. They are the Kittians, and even today there is a Metropolis of Kition.

Remarkable! Now, then, I shall explain it to you.

My people did not receive Me, and so I turn to the nations. Then He says that after He gathers them, they will see His glory. Does this remind you of anything? Some Greeks, it says, came to Jerusalem for the feast, approached Philip, and said to him, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.”

It says “Greeks.” Take note: they were not Greeks from mainland Greece. They were simply Gentiles, who at that time were commonly called Greeks because they spoke the Greek language. Today we would call them Hellenists, not Greeks in the sense of inhabitants of mainland Greece.

What did Christ say when Philip went and told Him? And do you know why they spoke to Philip? They did not go to Matthew or John. John and Matthew are Hebrew names. Philip had a Greek name and therefore, if you will permit me to put it this way, Philip had some connection with Greek influences. Indeed, Philip is a Greek name. Does that not strike you? Philip had lived in a region where Greeks lived. That is why they approached Philip as the one who seemed most familiar with their own background. Philip then went and said to the Lord, “Lord, some Greeks wish to see You.” The answer was: “Now the Son of Man is glorified.”

He says, “The Son of Man is glorified.” And the glory of the Son of Man is the Cross—the Cross, because He will be received by the Gentile world. Now, He says, He has been glorified. My own people will not glorify Me; the Greeks will glorify Me—that is, Greeks in the broader sense, the Gentiles will glorify Me. See, please, the precision of the prophecy. See the prophecy of Isaiah, eight hundred years before Christ, and then see the events that followed. It is astonishing, truly astonishing. But let us continue. “And they shall see My glory.” They will see the glory. “And I will leave a sign among them.” Saint Cyril says: “A sign.”

I must tell you something here. Forgive me; I did not examine this passage more closely, because, my beloved, we would need a great deal of time. How could we possibly cover all of this? Please do not blame me. It may be a textual question, and I ought to have consulted a critical edition to determine which reading is more accurate: “a sign” or “signs.” Anyone who is a theologian understands what I mean when I say that I must consult a critical edition. Is there a critical edition of the Septuagint text? Yes, there is. It has been published by the Apostoliki Diakonia. It is a biblical edition prepared by other scholars, foreign scholars, but published by the Apostoliki Diakonia. I should have consulted it.

“Signs” or “a sign,” because the various surviving manuscripts of the text contain different readings. I shall follow Saint Cyril, since in what follows he explains the singular form and says that the sign is the Precious Cross. “I will leave them,” He says, “a sign.” The singular is probably the more accurate reading, because the Old Testament itself says that they will see the sign of the Son of Man. Christ says this in the Gospels, and Saint John also says it in the Apocalypse. What is the sign of the Son of Man? The sign of the Cross. “I will leave them,” He says, “a sign,” meaning, “I will leave them the Cross.” Who venerates the Cross? The Christians, those from outside Israel.

The Israelites do not venerate the Precious Cross. Therefore, I shall leave this sign of Mine as an inheritance to the nations and tongues that will glorify Me, and it will glorify them. What a beautiful thing! Please pay attention. “And I will leave a sign among them, and I will send from among them those who have been saved to the nations.” Pay attention to this short phrase. Saint Cyril does not interpret these words. He cuts the prophecy short, because he does not proceed to what follows. But because we are Greeks, and because it speaks of the Greeks, I mention it to you so that we may rejoice in this prophecy. And I shall send some of those who have been saved from among them, so that they may save others.

The text says: “And I will send forth from among them those who have been saved to the nations.” It then goes on to name those nations. Do you know who these people are? From among the Gentiles, the idolaters, some will be saved and will become great and eminent; and I will send them to save the rest. I do not hesitate to tell you: they are the Fathers of our Church, those great and wondrous vessels of the Holy Spirit. For God says: I will save them, and I will send them to save the rest. They are the Fathers of our Church. So if someone asks, “Where does Scripture speak about the Fathers of the Church, especially the Fathers who came after Christ? For the Fathers appeared after the New Testament had been written.”

Here it is. Whom will He send? The Fathers—those who, through their writings and their interpretation of Holy Scripture, will enlighten and save humanity. That is why He says plainly: “I will send forth from among them”—from among these people. Where will they be sent? To Tarshish. Do you know where Tarshish is? You may remember it from the Book of Jonah: it is Spain, it is Spain.

Paul went to Spain, although Paul, of course, was not from among the Gentiles. And Put, Lud, Meshech, and Tubal are the names of various regions of the ancient world as it was known then—names from the eighth century before Christ. But how beautiful this is! I look at it and can never get enough of it: “And to Greece.” So He loves Greece; He mentions our name—Greece, the country we ourselves sell for a bowl of lentils. God chose this Greece as the land to which He would send His message, His preaching, and His sign, the Precious Cross; yet we sell this Greece away, betraying her in every possible way. We are truly pitiable.

Why do we not study these sacred texts, so that we may see our glory, see our roots, see our spiritual heritage, and see the heights to which God raises us? We are ignorant, and we act in ignorance; but whether through ignorance or knowingly, the result is the same: we bring upon ourselves an estrangement, an alienation from God. And further on it says: “To the distant islands, which have not heard My name, nor seen Me, nor seen My glory; and they shall proclaim My glory among the nations.” How beautiful this is. And now I return to Saint Cyril—but our time has also come to an end.

Saint Cyril says here: “From My struggle upon the Cross.” What is Christ’s struggle? The Precious Cross. Christ struggled, and He also endured agony. The Evangelists tell us that, in His agony in the Garden of Gethsemane, as He already tasted beforehand the Cross, His sweat fell like clots of blood. It was not blood; it was sweat, but sweat thick like blood. This shows the intensity of His agony—so great that, we might say, even the glands...

the sweat glands that produce perspiration were placed under tremendous strain by Christ’s anguish of soul as He faced the Cross. “And from My Cross,” He says, “which is My struggle, I will take a royal seal and give it to each of My soldiers upon his forehead.” I will place My own seal, the seal of the Precious Cross, upon their foreheads. My dear friends, the whole Gentile world received the Precious Cross—and we Greeks perhaps more than others, if I may say so for a moment. Our kings and the emperors of our Byzantium—our Byzantium, which we are now trying to bury away in storerooms—received it as well.

We try to hide its sculptures, its icons, and everything else, so that Byzantium will not be seen and only pre-Christian Greece will remain visible. We try to bury these things away, allowing them to crumble and be destroyed, because we wretched Greeks are returning to idolatry. My dear friends, all the emperors of Byzantium placed the Precious Cross upon their crowns and regarded it as their glory. They even fought wars for the Precious Cross, as Heraclius did when he went to war against the Persians to recover the Precious Cross, which the Persians had seized from Jerusalem. Yes, it is our glory!

Η παρουσία του στο βάπτισμα δεν είναι διακοσμητικό στοιχείο, με το κουμπαριλίκι, για να έχουμε κουμπάρους και κουμπάρες, να ανταλλάσσουμε δώρα, και διαλέγουμε και πλουσίους κουμπάρους να φέρουν στο βαφτιστήρι και στη βαφτιστήρα δώρα και δωράκια, και αν δεν φέρουν να είμαστε και παραπονούμενοι. Να το προσέξουμε, αγαπητοί μου, το θέμα αυτό. Το θέμα του αναδόχου είναι πολύ λεπτό. Θέλετε να δείτε πόσο σπουδαίο και λεπτό είναι; Ναι, υπάρχει κανόνας της Εκκλησίας. Δυστυχώς από την Πολιτεία έχει καταστρατηγηθεί αυτό το σημείο, ότι όταν βαφτίσει ο ανάδοχος ένα αγόρι και ένα κορίτσι, δεν μπορούν τα δύο αυτά παιδιά να παντρευτούν. Έχουν μεταξύ των πνευματική συγγένεια. Δεν επιτρέπεται. Ξέρετε γιατί;

Ανέβα, λέγει, επάνω στο ψηλό βουνό της Σιών και πες στις πόλεις του Ιούδα, λέει, της φυλής του Ιούδα. Τι να πω; Λέει ο Άγιος Κύριλλος, διακόπτει τον προφήτη και λέει ο προφήτης: «Ἰδοὺ ὁ Θεὸς ἡμῶν», να ο Θεός μας. Ποιος θα ανεβεί στο όρος Σιών; Ο προφήτης. Και τι θα φωνάξει εκεί σε όλες τις πόλεις του Ιούδα; «Ἰδοὺ ὁ Θεὸς ἡμῶν», να ο Θεός μας. Ίσως ένας επιπόλαιος αναγνώστης θα μπορούσε να τα περνάει αυτά αβρόχοις ποσί· έτσι θα τα περνάει. Θα λέει κανείς: «Τι είναι αυτό, να ο Θεός μας;» Αυτό το «Ἰδοὺ ὁ Θεὸς ἡμῶν» ξέρετε με τι αντιστοιχεί;

Το έλεος γράφεται με ε, το έλαιον, το λάδι, γράφεται με αι, αλλά το έλαιον, το λάδι, είναι σύμβολο του ελέους του Θεού, επειδή είναι μαλακό πράγμα, είναι μαλακό. Σας θυμίζω έναν στίχο από τους Ψαλμούς, ότι τα λόγια τους ήταν, λέει, σαν το λάδι, αλλά αυτά τα λόγια ήταν μάλλον σαν πέτρες, σαν λιθάρια. Έμοιαζαν σαν λάδι, αλλά ήταν λιθάρια. Δηλαδή υποκριτικά λόγια, που ήταν μαλακά, αλλά στην πραγματικότητα ήταν σκληρά. Α, γιατί είπα τον στίχο αυτό; Γραμματικώς τον ανέφερα τον στίχο, για να σας πω τι θα πει λάδι, δηλαδή και το μαλακό, το μαλακό. Συνεπώς, τι είναι το λάδι;

Το έλεος του Θεού, που είναι μαλακό πράγμα. Σου δίνω τη χάρη μου, σου δίνω το έλεός μου. Τι είναι το κρασί; Είναι τα μυστήρια, είναι το αίμα του Χριστού που έρχεται να σώσει την ανθρωπότητα. Συνεπώς έρχεται ο Σταυρός και διαλέγεται ο Σταυρός ως το λεγόμενο επόμενο θέλημα του Θεού, που είναι ο χειρότερος τρόπος για να σωθεί η ανθρωπότητα. Τι είπα, για να μην παρεξηγηθώ; Ο χειρότερος τρόπος για τον Θεό. Τι θα πει ο χειρότερος τρόπος; Ο φοβερότερος τρόπος. Λέει ο Άγιος Ισαάκ ο Σύρος: γιατί ο Θεός διάλεξε τον Σταυρό και δεν διάλεγε έναν άλλο τρόπο να σώσει την ανθρωπότητα;

Τόπον που είναι κακοτράχαλος, επικίνδυνος, ολισθηρός. Εκεί έρχεται το λυχνάρι της προφητείας να σου φέξει τα πόδια και να περπατήσεις σωστά. Γι’ αυτό λέει ο Άγιος Απόστολος Πέτρος: «Καλά κάνετε και μελετάτε τους προφήτες. Πρέπει να τους μελετάτε». Ξέρετε, στην Εκκλησία μας ο προφητικός λόγος έμεινε μόνο στα αναγνώσματα, και εκεί όχι πολύ πλούσια, στα αναγνώσματα των Εσπερινών. Κρίμα! Κρίμα! Υποτιμήσαμε την Παλαιά Διαθήκη. Δεν είναι κρίμα, αγαπητοί μου, οι αιρετικοί, οι προτεστάντες — δεν λέω για τους χιλιαστάς — οι προτεστάντες να μελετούν τους προφήτας και εμείς να μην τους μελετάμε; Δεν νομίζετε ότι η ανθρωπότητα σε κάθε εποχή πρέπει να βρίσκει διά των προφητειών τον Χριστόν;
