Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem’s Twelfth Catechesis explains the Creed with a rare combination of simplicity, doctrinal depth, and precision for those preparing for baptism. The lecture introduces three central questions: why God became man, whether God can truly commune with His creatures, and whether a virgin can give birth without a man. The creation of humanity reveals the special care of the Holy Trinity, with the Father creating through the Son in the Holy Spirit while the angels behold and praise God’s work.

My beloved, we are now in the Twelfth Catechesis of Saint Cyril of Jerusalem, which concerns the Incarnation and the becoming man of God the Word. For those attending for the first time, let me remind you that Saint Cyril’s catechetical lectures are essentially an exposition of the Creed. They seek to present a beautiful and very clear outline of the faith, marked by simplicity, depth, and precision. Saint Cyril combines simplicity with precision—something extremely difficult to achieve.
This is precisely what gives the book its value, because he was speaking to catechumens who had to learn what he was teaching them. Simply by seeing how he instructed those preparing for Baptism, one can judge the standard of what the Church offered to the people. And what a standard it was! I do not think people then were more educated than they are today. You know, in those days only those with money went to school. Not everyone could read and write. Yet this did not prevent someone who was going to become a Christian from hearing this catechesis.
They were expected to learn teaching so rich in dogmatic content. How astonishing this is! The people are always capable of learning. We must not wrong them by saying, “The people cannot understand,” and then offer them less—watering down, diminishing, and weakening the content. We always use the argument that “the people cannot understand,” and instead of elevating and strengthening our teaching, we lower it, until in the end the people understand nothing at all. This is a very serious evil. When we look into these immortal texts as into a mirror, we see, as I told you, the quality of what was offered
by the Church to those who were about to become Christians. A Christian must know the content of the faith. If he knows it, he is not easily in danger of being carried away by heresies, because he possesses the touchstone by which he can judge at any moment what is genuine and what is false. As I told you, I am referring to the passage: “The Word became man; He took flesh.” The holy author, of course, also sets out the positions of his opponents precisely in order to refute them, and his refutations are always based on Holy Scripture. He frequently says, “Do not imagine that everything I am telling you is something I have invented, something produced by my own mind.” And then, you see, he presents proofs from Holy Scripture—continually. If we ever learn, my beloved, to draw our proofs from Holy Scripture, from the Word of God, we shall have reached a very satisfactory level of spiritual work, both for ourselves and for others. This is extremely important. Therefore, when we examine these arguments, I ask you to pay close attention, so that we may acquire the key—the interpretive key—and learn how to work. Here he may give fifty or a hundred arguments, but throughout our lives we may need hundreds of thousands of arguments.
If we do not know how to find the arguments for ourselves, what shall we do? Someone who studies a science will not learn everything; he will learn how to work within that science. He will then discover the rest for himself. That is perfectly natural. It is the same here: we must learn how to find our arguments. When we study Holy Scripture—always with the help of the Fathers of our Church—we must attend carefully to what we read. We must underline it, make notes, wrestle with it, linger lovingly over it, and press it hard, like a conqueror seeking to capture a fortress. We must not abandon a passage until we have mastered it. We may leave it for a while and continue further on,
but we must return to it and master it. Only then can we acquire the key to interpreting Scripture and possess the wealth of arguments we may need. In the third paragraph, where we left off last time, Saint Cyril refers to the various arguments of the heretics. He says: “The Son of God was not born by the will of a man and a woman, as the heretics claim, but became man from a Virgin and the Holy Spirit, according to the Gospel—not in appearance, but in truth. As for the truth that He became man from a Virgin, wait for the proper point in the teaching; then you will receive the proofs.”
Now, he says, I shall give you the proofs. The error of the heretics is intricate, for the heretics’ delusions take many forms. What exactly do they say? Some have maintained that He was not born of a virgin at all. Others have said that He was born, but not of a virgin—rather, of a woman who lived with a husband, claiming that the Theotokos had a spouse. “Others say that Christ was not God who became man,” but rather “a man who, after being distinguished, was made divine”—some mere man who attained theosis. “For they dared to say that it was not the pre-existing Word who became man.” They went so far as to dare to claim that it was not the pre-eternal Word—the One who existed beforehand, the pre-eternal and pre-existing Word—who became man,
“but some man who advanced in virtue and was crowned in this way”; that is, they claim that a man who progressed in virtue eventually became Jesus Christ. Today, my beloved, I took a taxi, and the driver took out a cigarette. “If you will forgive me,” he said, “does it bother you?” “Go ahead,” I replied, “except that smoking harms your health.” So we began speaking a little about health. “What does it matter?” he said. “If something is destined to happen to you, it will happen.” “No,” I told him. “Whatever is written is written,” he replied. “No,” I said. Then he said, “You will live only as long as the oil in your lamp lasts.” “No,” I answered. A person can take care of his own life. Man alone, however, is not the master of his life; God also has authority over it. Yet it is not God alone either, for the human person also has a part.
He gave me various examples, including a young man of twenty-three who had developed cancer, and so forth. “That is how these things are,” he told me. Then he said, “Even Jesus Christ, as a man, did not look after His health”—listen, listen to the way he spoke—“He took care neither of His health nor of His safety, and He died at the age of thirty-three.”
That was his idea of Jesus Christ: that He ought to have taken care of His health. I told him, “Jesus Christ cannot be measured by our standards. He was, of course, perfect man, but also perfect God. We cannot say of Christ that He failed to take care of His health.” This is the understanding our people have of Jesus Christ—one person thinks one thing, another something else. All of this comes from ignorance. Ignorance! What a dreadful thing ignorance is. That is why John Chrysostom says, “Ignorance has also introduced the ruin brought by heresies.” Yes, ignorance has brought upon us the destruction caused by heresies. People have turned everything upside down and thrown everything into confusion.
Ignorance—what a dreadful thing ignorance is! For this reason, my beloved, we must acquire a clear knowledge of the person of Jesus Christ. Saint Cyril continues: “But you must remember what was said yesterday concerning His divinity. Believe that this very same Only-Begotten Son of God was also born of a Virgin. Believe John the Evangelist when he says: ‘And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.’ For the Word is eternal, begotten of the Father before all ages; but for our sake He assumed flesh only recently.” This very One, says the holy author—this very One. Come here, remain, and believe the holy Evangelist. He is the pre-eternal Word, the eternal God, who in recent times became man. This is Jesus Christ. And now, my beloved, in only three or four lines, he will present three basic and foundational questions. The first two in particular are immense theological questions. Listen: “But many object and say, ‘What cause was so great that it led God to descend into humanity?’” That is the first question. As some people ask—and these questions naturally become established positions within theology—what was the cause that moved God to become man?
This concerns the reason for the Incarnation. Why did God the Word become man? He continues: “And can the fullness of the divine nature truly associate with men in the flesh?” This is the second question: Is it possible for God to have true communion and genuine fellowship with His creatures, with human beings? Third: “And was it possible for a virgin to give birth without a man?” Is a Virgin Birth possible? The first two questions are foundational: What is the reason for the Incarnation? And second, does this communion exist—is such a relationship between God and man possible, and likewise between man and God? This is a question of salvation, because if this relationship exists, then man is saved. That is what salvation means. What does it mean? It is what Saint Athanasius the Great says: “God became man so that man might become god by grace.” This is salvation. Saint Cyril continues: “Since there is much contradiction and the conflict takes many forms, come, by the grace of Christ and through the prayers of those present, let us resolve each question.” There are many objections, he says, and much dispute concerning these matters. But with the help and grace of God,
and through the prayers of those present, let us examine them. And I, in turn, would say: through your prayers also, and by the grace of God, let us go forward and consider these exceedingly great questions.
A brief passage comes in between, in the fifth paragraph, to explain exactly how we shall begin. “First, then, let us inquire why Jesus descended.” First of all, let us seek to understand why the Son of God became man. For what reason, he asks, did Jesus descend? “And do not pay attention to inventions of my own.” Do not accept my words merely on the assumption that I discovered these things or devised them in my own mind.
“Do not accept my inventions, for perhaps I might outwit you.” Perhaps I might persuade you, somehow, to believe what I myself am saying. “But unless you receive the testimony of the prophets concerning each matter, do not believe what is said.” If I do not present testimony from Scripture itself, do not believe what I tell you. “Unless you learn from the divine Scriptures about the Virgin, the place, the time, and the manner, do not accept testimony from a man.” Unless all these things are firmly established for you from Holy Scripture, accept nothing. “For it is possible to regard with suspicion the man who is present and teaching you.” Concerning the person who stands before you and teaches you, perhaps you might say:
“His words are suspect; he is not teaching me correctly.” “But who, if he has understanding, would suspect one who prophesied a thousand or more years ago?” How can a sensible person suspect those who spoke eight hundred or a thousand years earlier—the prophets? We therefore need firm confirmation. And now, my beloved, we proceed to the main subject. What is the first principal question? “Why did Jesus descend?” Or: “What cause was so great that it led God to descend into humanity?” What was the cause that led God to descend from Heaven and become man? What was that cause? What moved God? “Do you wish to know the causes of Christ’s coming from the beginning? Go back to the first book of the Scriptures.”
Let us turn to the first book of Scripture. “God made the world in six days, but the world was made for man. The sun shines with its brightest rays, but it was made to shine for man. All the animals were appointed to serve us; plants and trees were created for our enjoyment. All created things are good, but none of them is the image of God; man alone is.” God made the world, but the world was made for man. The sun gives light, but it does so for man. The animals exist, but for man. The whole realm of plants and vegetation exists, but for man. None of these things is the image of God; only man is. By now you have learned our method of presenting these texts. We do not rush ahead and remain only with the main subject that the holy author wishes to discuss. We also make digressions, because his words contain so many precious teachings. My beloved, when we travel somewhere, we may find along the road an opportunity to eat a fig, a few grapes, or some blackberries. In the same way, we shall continue toward our destination, but can we not taste something along the road? Can we not also interpret a few other matters, since they are so attractive and inviting
in their beauty, depth, and value? We shall therefore make digressions and open parentheses, which we shall then close before continuing. The world was made for man. The world was made for man. This is a great truth, a truth that had to be revealed. Man could not have discovered it by himself. When I was a schoolboy in one of the lower grades—I must have been in the second year of the old eight-year secondary school, which was essentially the sixth grade, although in those days we entered secondary school after the fourth grade, as you may remember—we had a very fine science laboratory. For that period it was one of the best in Greece. Our science teacher taught us botany. The same teacher taught us botany, zoology, chemistry, and physics. He has, of course, long since passed away. One day, during a botany lesson, he was speaking to us about fruit and how a new plant grows from it. He explained the flower and its various parts, all the familiar things one learns in botany. Suddenly he said to us, “What do you think? Were fruits made for you to stuff your faces with?” That is what the late teacher told us. “They were made so that the species might perpetuate itself.” It made such an impression on me that I still remember it and repeat it to you after so many decades.
That shows how deeply it impressed me. I wrestled with it for many years and could not understand it. Eventually, however, the moment came when I did. Was the plant kingdom made for the sake of the plant kingdom, or was it made for man? My teacher wished to argue that the plant kingdom was made for itself. Consequently, the plant kingdom would be an end in itself. Is this an easy question or a difficult one? It is immensely difficult! Let me give you a related example. You know that there is a certain view and interpretation in the arts: Is art for art’s sake, or is art for man? This is an enormous question!
For if art exists for art’s sake, then an artist may present, in the name of art—which has become an end in itself and even a kind of dogma within art—a nude image that causes scandal. If the artist is taken to court, he may defend himself by saying, “Gentlemen, I am creating art.” And I must tell you that, according to this view, art is bound neither by morality nor by anything else, simply because art exists for art’s sake. What I am telling you is not outdated. These are questions of the present day. Do not imagine that these problems have disappeared!
Art for art’s sake. By what standard, then, is this man to be judged? Is art for art’s sake, or is art for the human person? On the basis of the revelation of the Word of God, if the world was made for the human person, then naturally the individual parts of the world were also made for the human person. And what are those individual elements, those parts? Art, science, and everything else. Art, then, was not made to serve itself complacently, as though it were an end in itself; it was made to serve the human person. Art that does not serve the human person serves nothing. Of course, as I have said, this is a vast question.
Art may serve not the human person, but politics. You know this: so-called politicized art. Under totalitarian regimes, art serves the political regime. It is not concerned with whether it benefits or harms the human person as a person, but only with whether it serves the political regime. The politicization of art—this is something that is taught, as you know. But we ask—and here you see the standards by which things are judged—this is why they fear Christianity; everyone fears it. Christianity will set these truths forth with complete clarity, and then nothing false can stand. The crown of creation is the human person. The personhood of man has this great worth because the human person is the image of God.
Art cannot serve either itself or political ends. Politics itself must serve the human person. If politics restricts human freedom, if it violates the personhood of man, if in any way it turns against the human person, then it does not serve the human person; instead, the human person serves politics—or serves art. Shall we go further? Science. We speak of science for science’s sake. Yes, but no: science is for the human person. For if science comes to serve itself complacently, it will work to the harm of the human person—as indeed it does, as indeed it does.
And so on. Do you see what follows from this? Do you see what comes from that beautiful little phrase of the Holy Father, when he says that the world exists for the human person? You may ask, do people not understand this? They stumble about in confusion. The proof is in all the false conclusions they draw. That is why we need revelation: God must reveal these truths to us, so that we do not stumble about amid such questions. Thus, I say once again: if the world exists for the human person, then everything else must serve the human person.
As he says so beautifully a little further on, everything is beautiful and everything is important, yet none of these things is the image of God; only the human person is. “But none of these is the image of God; only the human person is.” The truth that the human person is the image of God is precisely a revelation of the Word of God. The human person could never have discovered this alone—never. It is pure revelation. The ancient Greeks did, of course, say, “For we are indeed His offspring,” that we are God’s offspring; and the Apostle Paul takes up this saying when he speaks to the Athenians. But the expression “For we are indeed His offspring,” that we are of His family, is not a sufficiently clear statement to establish that the human person is the image of God. It indicates only a certain kinship, that the human person has some kinship with God. But we must also examine who this God is. For if God is personal,
then this kinship relates to the personhood of man. But if God is not personal and is identified with nature itself, then we fall into pantheism. In that case, of course, one might say, “For we are indeed His offspring.” They quarry limestone on Mount Olympus, and I have calcium within me. They mine coal on Mount Kissavos, and I have carbon within me.
They mine iron in the Grammos Mountains, and of course I have iron within me. If God is creation itself, then I can say, “For we are indeed His offspring”: I am related to this god, to creation; I am the offspring of this god. But who is God? You see, the words that the Apostle Paul uses were originally spoken in a pantheistic sense—not by the Apostle Paul, but by the ancient Greeks.
In the final analysis, then, there is confusion. My dear friends, only revelation can tell us that we are the image of God. And consider how great a revelation this is. We try to discover what the image of God means, yet we never reach its depths. What do we do instead? We circle around the mystery. For the prototype is beyond comprehension, and therefore His image is also beyond comprehension. We can only circle around it. So, in the end, yes, it is revealed to us, and at the same time I accept it by faith. But you may ask: if it is revelation, why does it require faith? Because we do not comprehend it. Now come, please, and let us consider this carefully. A society that receives its people as the image of God will exercise true freedom and will develop all those qualities that today we call democratic. By contrast, a society that neither recognizes nor even knows
that the human person is the image of God will commit, again in the name of so-called democratic principles, the most dreadful and unspeakable acts of brutality against the human person, all the while with a clear conscience, believing that it is serving humanity. This is a reality that has been demonstrated as a sociological principle among the Christian peoples of the West. That is what I mean. By “the West” I mean the peoples who received Christianity, who received Christ—not the West in a geographical sense, but as a technical term.
My dear friends, these theological principles are foundational, at least among Christian peoples. And when Christian peoples draw their inspiration from God’s revelation, they build a wonderful society. As I have said so many times, we must not turn Christianity into politics. Rather, we must order everything—art, science, technology, and politics—in accordance with these principles of the Gospel and, in the present case, by always keeping before our eyes the truth that the human person is the image of God.
Saint Cyril continues: “The sun was made by a command alone, but the human person was fashioned by divine hands: ‘Let Us make man in Our image and according to Our likeness.’ A wooden image of an earthly king is honored; how much more should the rational image of God be honored?”
The sun came into being at God’s command, whereas the human person was made by the hands of God. Of course, God does not have hands. This is expressed in the words, “Let Us make man.” Here one beholds the Triune God—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit—and sees that the world is created because the Father wills it.
The Father creates through the Son in the Holy Spirit. This is the place of the three Persons in creation. God alone creates; creation is not accomplished by the hands of angels. Since the angels themselves were created by God, they are spectators of material creation—spectators only, and nothing more. The angelic world does not participate in creation; God, and God alone, creates. The angels behold, marvel, stand in awe, and praise God. The Book of Job says, “When the stars were made, the angels praised Me.” When the stars—or the universe—were made, the angels glorified Me.
How majestic! The angels do not participate in creation; they are spectators. Only the three Persons of the Holy Trinity create. The human person was fashioned in the image of God, by the hands of God. God does not have hands, but by this we mean the special care God has for the human person. At times, when speaking of the anthropopathic and anthropomorphic expressions in Holy Scripture—and we may indeed describe them as such—I fear that we can sometimes go too far. How did God create the human person? Of course, God does not have hands, but I do not know how He did it.
It is a Mystery how God the Word fashioned the human person. We do not know. He fashions the human person with tremendous care and wisdom. We need only take the human person as the object of our study and begin to examine him—even his cells and what is found within those cells. As I was reading recently, there is something astonishing:
within every cell we have chromosomes. And there are, it says, within every cell, tiny strands—a thread with a length of three thousand kilometers. Think of it! Inside the cell, my dear friends.
A thread three thousand kilometers long. And upon it the personality of the human person is imprinted. One part bears the imprint of what he inherited from his ancestors, and the rest he will imprint himself. And do you know how it is imprinted? Listen to the way scientists have discovered it. If you take a motion-picture film with sound, on which the voice has been recorded in the form of light, then beside the images on the film you will see patterns of light opening and closing. Those of you who know a little about this understand it very well. Sound modulated the light and was recorded as light upon the film. Then this pattern of light, passing once more before a lamp, produces varying intensities that are converted back into sound. In this way, sound is recorded optically as light, and the optical recording is rendered again as sound, giving us playback. There you will see openings and closings, like a waveform—not merely a sine wave, but one with its many harmonics, producing a great variety through its negative and positive portions, its openings and closings. These tiny strands are just like that. Whatever we do, whatever we think, whatever action we take, is recorded.
It is recorded there throughout the whole course of our life. Do you understand, then, how each human person will be read when we rise again and our bodies are raised? I read this recently, and I will tell you where: in an annual booklet published by the Holy Monastery of Gregoriou on the Holy Mountain. That is where I read it. Is it not astonishing that Holy Scripture says, “The books will be opened”? Books will be opened so that what has been written may be found. Before discovering these strands within our cells, how might we have interpreted this, and what might we have said those books were?
Of course, we used to say that they are not literal books, but the memory of God. Yet now, my dear friends, the very nature of our cells comes to show that they are—pay attention—books in which things are recorded. This is why I said earlier: does God have hands? Of course He does not have hands. But we cannot know how God made the human person. My dear friends, ours is the wisdom of a child. We know nothing. We know so very little, and even what we do know is revealed to us by Holy Scripture, by the Word of God—and only what we need for our salvation: that we may call God our Father, and He may call us His children. Whether I am educated and discover the strands within cells, or whether I know nothing and simply call God my Father,
it is the same; it is exactly the same. This is why the Word of God is for everyone, because God desires everyone to be saved. Saint Cyril then continues: the wooden image of an earthly king, he says, is honored. We have, for example, a portrait of the king. How much more, then, should the rational and living image of God—the human person—be honored? So great a thing is the human person. And if you ask why I have gone into all this detail—
Why? Because we said that we would make digressions. These things are so beautiful that we must not let them pass without making the most of them. But there is something else as well. If you have been paying attention, I have been emphasizing one thing: the greatness of the human person. Do you know why? Because Saint Cyril will tell us a little later that, since the human person is so great, this is why God came down. This is why! The human person was worth it. Saint Gregory the Theologian says that man is—listen—a great world within a small world. I have not made a mistake. Natural science says that man is a microcosm within a macrocosm.
The universe is the macrocosm. Indeed, they say that a human being, about one meter seventy-five tall, stands at the midpoint in size between the macrocosm and the microcosm. In terms of size, this person of one meter seventy-five stands in the middle. Therefore, man is a microcosm within a macrocosm. No, says Saint Gregory the Theologian. No! Man is a macrocosm within a microcosm. Man is the great world, and the universe is the small world. Why? Because the Saint is a theologian, while the world is the world and science is science. Science sees only the physical aspect of things, whereas Saint Gregory the Theologian sees their depths. And when he calls man a macrocosm, do you know what he sees? The image of God,
an image that does not exist in the universe. Therefore, the universe is the microcosm, and man is the macrocosm who bears the image of God. How majestic this is! “But this greatest of all creatures, dancing in Paradise, was cast out by the devil’s envy. The enemy rejoiced over the fall of the one whom he had envied. Did God intend to let the enemy continue rejoicing? Not daring to approach the man through the stronger one, the enemy approached the woman as the weaker one, while she was still a virgin. For it was only after their expulsion from Paradise that Adam knew Eve his wife.” And so,
this creature was so great: “But this greatest of all creatures, dancing in Paradise, was cast out by the devil’s envy.” The devil’s envy drove man out of Paradise, and the enemy rejoiced at man’s fall. “The enemy rejoiced over the fall of the one whom he had envied. Did God intend to let the enemy continue rejoicing?” What then? Would God leave the enemy to continue in his joy? No, certainly not. For, at the deepest level, God’s creation itself was being brought to futility. This is why the Son of God came down; this is why He became man.
Now, my dear friends, Saint Cyril gives us a brief survey of history. I shall read it to you first and then recount it. “Cain and Abel became the second successors in the human race, and Cain was the first murderer. Later, the flood poured forth because of humanity’s great wickedness. Fire came down from heaven upon the people of Sodom because of their lawlessness. After many years God chose Israel, but Israel too became corrupt, and the chosen people were wounded. For while Moses stood before God on the mountain, the people worshiped a calf in place of God. In the days of Moses the lawgiver, who had said, ‘You shall not commit adultery,’ a man dared to enter the furnace of lust and commit fornication. After Moses, prophets were sent”
“to heal Israel; but they wept bitterly because they could not overcome the sickness, so that one of them said, ‘The godly man has perished from the earth, and there is no one among men who acts uprightly.’ And again: ‘They have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt. There is no one who does good, not even one.’ And again: ‘Cursing and theft and adultery and murder have flooded the earth.’ ‘They sacrificed their sons and their daughters to demons.’ They practiced divination, sorcery, and omen-reading. And again: ‘Binding their garments with cords, they made hangings beside the altar.’” This is a very brief survey of human history. Adam’s descendants come upon the scene, and Cain kills Abel.
Human beings sin, and the flood comes. They continue to sin, and fire comes down from heaven upon Sodom. God chooses Abraham, and Abraham leaves descendants; but they too begin to fall into corruption. “Thus the chosen people became corrupt and were wounded.” This people who had been chosen became corrupt. Moses proclaims, “You shall not commit adultery,” and even as he says it, a man is caught, as the account tells us, committing fornication with the Moabite woman, and so forth. The prophets are sent, and they weep and lament. There is no godly person left upon the earth. There is no one prudent and wise upon the earth.
“They have turned aside; together they have become corrupt.” Everyone became perverted; everyone became depraved. Nothing remained upon the earth—nothing. The earth is thus presented to us in this condition: corrupted to its very core. Its great corruption lay in its forgetfulness of the true God. Humanity forgot Him and fell into idolatry—the greatest sin of mankind and the devil’s greatest victory: establishing the worship of creation, which is really the worship of himself. For the devil was hiding behind creation, not the Creator, God. And now Saint Cyril, as he enters the seventh paragraph, says—listen to this phrase,
for it sums everything up: “Therefore, the wound of humanity was exceedingly great.” The wound of humanity, then, was exceedingly great. This is why he gives this historical survey: to show how dreadful humanity’s Fall had been and how deeply humanity had been wounded. Here he also uses a beautiful saying from Isaiah: “From the sole of the foot even to the head, there is no soundness in it. There is nowhere to apply ointment, neither oil nor bandages.” This comes from the first chapter of Isaiah. Isaiah is, of course, lamenting over Israel; how much more, then, would he lament over all humanity.
From the feet to the head, the whole body is one wound. There God says through Isaiah, “Where can I apply ointment to you?” A soothing remedy, what we would call a poultice. “Neither oil nor bandages.” Where can I put them? Where can I put them? Your whole body is one wound. Such was humanity. Humanity, my dear friends, was entirely one wound.
The prophets wept bitterly and cried out, “Who will bring salvation out of Zion?” The prophets wept and lamented, saying, “Who will bring salvation out of Zion?” Why? Because this is found in Psalm 13. If Zion herself has fallen, then who will bring salvation out of Zion? For Israel had fallen. From where, then, would the One who would save humanity come? And yet, my dear friends, the love and wisdom of God brought forth the Virgin Mary, so that He who came from Zion might come. It does not say “from Sinai,” but “from Zion.”
“The law,” says a verse from the Psalms, “shall go forth from Zion.” Zion, as you know, is a hill in Palestine, in Jerusalem. The Temple had been built upon that hill. We know that the Law did not go forth from Zion; it went forth from Sinai. Why, then, does it say here that the law will go forth from Zion? Because this is the new law, the New Testament, which went forth from Zion, not from Sinai. Look at the prophets—it is astonishing. And again: “Let Your hand rest upon the man at Your right hand, and upon the Son of Man whom You have strengthened for Yourself; and we shall never turn away from You.” Another of the prophets pleaded, saying—and from time to time I shall leave something out, because Saint Cyril includes
many prophecies, and otherwise, my dear friends, it will take us twenty years to finish. “Lord, bow the heavens and come down. Humanity’s wounds are beyond our power to heal. They have killed Your prophets and torn down Your altars. The evil is beyond our power to correct; we need You to set it right.” You sent prophets. But Your people seized and killed them. They did not listen to their preaching—to Your preaching. Human beings did not listen. Now, please listen carefully to this phrase. It comes from Psalm 143.
“Bow the heavens and come down.” Saint Cyril adds, “The evil is beyond our power to correct; we need You to set it right.” For the evil among us cannot be corrected by us. If we kill even Your prophets, how can we ever be set right? We need You to correct us. “We need You to set it right.” The world needs You to correct it—You personally. And so: “Bow the heavens, O Lord, and come down.” What does “bow” mean? Lower the heavens and descend. Make the distance smaller. As we were saying, how might we put it? Think of an elevator. A person cannot reach someone high up in a tall building
simply by jumping; he cannot jump that high. So he enters the elevator, which comes down and down and down, until it reaches a point close enough to the ground floor for him to step out. It is a most beautiful expression: “Bow the heavens, O Lord, and come down.” Lower the heavens and descend. What does this mean? God is present everywhere. Does God enter an elevator in order to descend? Does God need to move from one place to another? What does “bow the heavens and come down” mean? It means condescension. His descent is His condescension. And where do we see that condescension? In the Incarnation. For
God is present everywhere; He has no need either to ascend or to descend. But in order to come down, He must condescend, and that condescension is the Incarnation. In other words, this verse is as though it were saying: “Become man, O Lord, and come among us. Come to earth, because we need You to set us right. We are beyond correction.” “The Lord heard the supplication of the prophets. The Father did not disregard our race as it was perishing, but sent His own Son, the Lord, from heaven as its physician.” He heard humanity writhing in pain, groaning, and wailing.
I was just reminded of that word, “wailing.” The Father, Saint Cyril says, heard all these cries and sent His Son from heaven to heal us. And it is said in the prophet: “The Lord whom you seek is coming, and the Lord will suddenly come to His own Temple.” This is Malachi 3:1. Please listen to this prophecy. Since we seek Him, “the Lord whom you seek is coming,” says the prophet. You seek Him, and He is coming. And He will come suddenly: “He will suddenly come.”
Saint Cyril continues the words of the prophet: “The Lord will come to His own Temple.” He will come to His Temple. I want to lead you away from a somewhat vague interpretation and bring you to something more concrete.
The rabbis of that time used to read this prophecy of Malachi and interpret it for the people. How might they have interpreted it? Perhaps much as we speak today: “God does not have hands; God is this and that,” as we try somehow to explain such things. The prophecy says that the Lord whom you seek is coming. “Master interpreter, how are we to understand the words ‘is coming’?”
And He will come suddenly. How? Where? The Lord will come to His Temple. Does that mean we shall open the door and find God inside? Who could have imagined that God would become man? And indeed, He came suddenly. Who was expecting Him? They said, “He will come.” He came one night—a night in Bethlehem. The Savior of the world was born. He came suddenly. Yet it was not sudden, because it was the appointed time, when the fullness of time had come. Why, then, is it called sudden? Because human beings could not determine when that fullness of time would be. Where did He come? To His Temple. The Lord Himself came. There, in Solomon’s Portico, the Lord taught. There in the Temple, in its courts, He taught.
Who could ever have imagined that Yahweh Himself, the Lord, would descend into His own temple—a temple built by human hands—to speak with mankind? For the Lord preached there, in His own temple. Yet the people picked up stones to stone Him—the Lord in His own temple—because they did not recognize Him. They had failed to understand the prophets; they had killed the prophets and had also killed the spirit of the prophets. But may it never be that we should kill either the prophets or the spirit of the prophets. We understand, and when we understand, we worship the Lord of Glory, who bowed the heavens, came down, and came among us.
For us, the Lord suddenly came into His temple. Which temple of His? Not the one built long ago by Solomon and later by Herod, but the temple that is each human person. The Apostle Paul says that we are the temple of the Lord, the temple of God, the temple of the Holy Spirit. I am a temple of God. He descended to us. How did He make His dwelling within us? Through His flesh and His blood. But I shall continue, my dear friends.

Άγνοια, φοβερό πράγμα η άγνοια. Γι' αυτό το λόγο θα πρέπει να αποκτήσουμε σαφή γνώση του προσώπου του Ιησού Χριστού, αγαπητοί. Λοιπόν: «Σὺ δὲ μνημόνευσον τῶν χθὲς περὶ τῆς Θεότητος εἰρημένων. Πίστευσον ὅτι αὐτὸς ἐκεῖνος ὁ τοῦ Θεοῦ Μονογενὴς οὗτος ἐκ Παρθένου πάλιν ἐγεννήθη. Ἰωάννῃ τῷ Εὐαγγελιστῇ πίστευε λέγοντι· Καὶ ὁ Λόγος σὰρξ ἐγένετο καὶ ἐσκήνωσεν ἐν ἡμῖν. Ὁ μὲν γὰρ Λόγος αἰώνιος, πρὸ πάντων τῶν αἰώνων ἐκ Πατρὸς γεννηθείς· τὴν δὲ σάρκα προσφάτως ἀνέλαβε δι᾿ ἡμᾶς». Αυτός, λέει ο Ιερός Συγγραφεύς, αυτός. Έλα εδώ, μείνε και πίστεψε στον Ιερό Ευαγγελιστή. Είναι ο προαιώνιος Λόγος, αιώνιος Θεός, που πρόσφατα έγινε άνθρωπος. Αυτός είναι ο Ιησούς Χριστός. Και τώρα, αγαπητοί μου, θα πει μέσα σε τρεις στίχους, τέσσερις στίχους, τρία θέματα βασικά και θεμελιώδη, που αποτελούν, ιδίως τα δύο πρώτα, τεράστια θέματα της θεολογίας. Ακούσατε: «Ἀλλ᾿ ἀντιλέγουσι πολλοὶ καὶ λέγουσι· Τί τοσοῦτον οὖν αἴτιον, ὥστε Θεὸν εἰς ἀνθρωπότητα καταβῆναι;» Πρώτο. Όπως λέγουν μερικοί και που φυσικά αυτά προκύπτουν πια σε θέσεις μέσα στη θεολογία: Τι ήταν εκείνο το αίτιο που έκανε το Θεό να γίνει άνθρωπος;
Διαβάζαν την προφητεία αυτή του Μαλαχίου τότε οι Ραββίνοι και ερμήνευαν στο λαό. Άραγε πώς να την ερμήνευαν; Όπως και εμείς σήμερα λέμε: «Ο Θεός δεν έχει χέρια, ο Θεός τούτο, εκείνο», προσπαθούμε κάπως έτσι να πούμε τα πράγματα. Δηλαδή, ότι ο Κύριος, τον οποίον ζητάτε, έρχεται. Πώς εκλαμβάνεται, κύριε ερμηνευτά, το «έρχεται»;
