Summary

Saint Cyril’s Twelfth Catechesis presents the Incarnation of the Son of God, foretold by Isaiah’s prophecy that a virgin would bear Emmanuel. John’s proclamation that the Word was God and became flesh establishes Christ as one divine-human person with unconfused divine and human natures. The incarnate King and Physician assumed humanity to heal fallen humanity and came as the heavenly Bread to nourish those who hunger.

My beloved, we are now in the Twelfth Catechesis of Saint Cyril, Bishop of Jerusalem, and, with God’s help, we are beginning the fourth year of our study of Saint Cyril’s catechetical lectures. The title is as follows.

“For those being illumined”—that is, a catechesis for those who are already approaching Baptism—delivered in Jerusalem, concerning Him who became incarnate and was made man; with a reading from Isaiah: “And the Lord spoke again to Ahaz, saying, ‘Ask for yourself a sign,’” and so forth.

“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Emmanuel,” and so forth. This is the title of the Twelfth Catechesis. To avoid repeating such a long title, I would simply say that it concerns the Incarnation of the Son of God: the Son of God takes flesh and becomes man. This is an article of the Creed and a fundamental one: “And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God,” and so forth. It concerns, then, the becoming man of the Son of God. To support this teaching and provide a scriptural foundation, Saint Cyril takes a passage here from Isaiah.

It continues: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive,” and so forth. And now we enter into Saint Cyril’s exposition. Paragraph one: “Companions of purity and disciples of chastity, let us praise with pure lips the God who was born of a Virgin. Since we are counted worthy to partake of the flesh of the spiritual Lamb, let us partake of the head together with the feet, understanding the head as His divinity and the feet as His humanity.” And so forth. Let us see, my beloved. He begins the Twelfth Catechesis with a brief introduction.

It is a short address consisting of only one sentence, without rhetorical flourishes. Saint Cyril does not care for rhetorical flourishes, at least not pompous ones. His eloquence lies elsewhere: in his ability to persuade his listeners. Rhetoric is not meant to appear like fireworks or empty bubbles, but to attract the hearer’s attention and persuade him. His arguments, the way he presents them, and so forth—these constitute his rhetorical art. Thank you.

He does not employ the rhetorical devices found in secular oratory. That is why his expression is concise. Look at his language: it is very easy to understand. Anyone who completed the old six-year secondary school can understand Saint Cyril wonderfully well. His syntax is not convoluted, nor does he use unfamiliar words. Believe me, you would be hard-pressed to find even one unfamiliar word on a page. You truly would. And fortunately so, because he can be read by many people today, in the twentieth century, even though his catechetical lectures were written in the middle of the fourth century.

In the year 350, to be precise. His address to those being illumined is this: “Companions of purity and disciples of chastity.” O disciples of chastity, O companions of purity! “Let us praise with pure lips the God who was born of a Virgin.” Come, let us praise with pure lips and a pure mouth Him who is the God of purity and who was born of a Virgin. I will not dwell on this introduction from a literary standpoint, of course, but I will dwell on it theologically. Here he calls Jesus Christ the God of purity.

He calls upon his pupils, who are disciples of chastity and companions of purity, to praise Him: the God of purity, Jesus Christ, the God of purity. But why is He the God of purity? Is it because He was born of a pure Virgin? If He had been born, not of a Virgin, but through the natural manner of human birth, would He not bear the title of the pure God? To put it another way, Saint John the Baptist—whose birth as a son was announced by the Archangel Gabriel, though it would take place through the natural means of generation—was he not born...

Yet we do not have a supernatural birth here. We have a natural birth. What, then, would we say? Is John not also the fruit of purity? Note that our Church accepts virginity in the absolute sense in only three persons. See how restrained the Church is.

And see her theology. Many Fathers wrote at length about virginity. Yet in this case the Church accepts only three persons as virgins in the absolute sense—I repeat, in the absolute sense—the Theotokos, Saint John the Baptist, and Saint John the Theologian. You know how strict Basil the Great was. He was the offspring of a family of saints; his father was a bishop, and his forebears were Christians. And yet the profoundly ascetic Basil the Great writes: “I have not known a woman, and yet I am not a virgin,” because he possessed...

an understanding of what virginity truly means. Virginity is not the physical integrity of a membrane. Virginity is an inward state. But I will not dwell on this any longer, except to say this: Jesus Christ is not called the God of purity because He was born of a Virgin. This is the conclusion I have been trying to reach all this time. John too—the wondrous John—though he was not born of a Virgin, is pure. Why, then, is Jesus Christ called the God of purity? First of all, because He is sinless.

Secondly, if you wish to look more deeply, within marriage—although marriage has received a blessing, and do not be alarmed by what I am about to say—within marriage, although it has been blessed in both the Old Testament and the New Testament, God blesses our first-created parents: “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth,” and so forth. Yet marriage remains a certain condition which, though blessed as marriage before the Fall, was established in view of the Fall. For note that our first-created parents lived in virginity in Paradise. The fulfillment of the command to “fill the earth,” to increase and...

fill the earth and multiply, took place after the Fall. Holy Scripture clearly says that after the Fall Adam knew Eve his wife. The word “knew” is a discreet way of saying that he came together with his wife: he acknowledged her as his spouse and had relations with her. He knew her. For in Paradise there was virginity. Thus marriage stands one step lower, if not more. It belongs to the form of this present age. In the Kingdom of God there will once again be no marriage. That is why the Lord said to the Sadducees who questioned Him, “You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures.” They had asked Him...

whose wife the woman would be among the seven brothers, since all of them had taken her as wife. “You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures.” In the Kingdom of God, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like the angels. This means that there is no procreation there, no such function of marriage. That, then, will be the natural state. But because that state would not endure—that is, because the Fall would intervene—the love of God willed to descend one step lower, to institute marriage, and so to give us the condition we now have.

The human race multiplies in this way. This is how God willed it. Yet it is something lower. In the Kingdom of God there will be celibacy; there will be no marriage. This is clear. This, then, is the implication here. It does not mean that a saint would be inferior because he was born through the natural means of generation. Marriage is not unclean. The Apostle Paul says plainly that those who claim marriage is unclean are heretics. He foretells that a time will come when such people will appear, like the Gnostics. Take care—the Gnostics! Yesterday I read an announcement someone showed me. The Gnostics are holding a lecture, meeting, or something of that sort on Cyprus Street.

Gnostics here in Larissa—the very thing I was telling you about last year. Be careful, be very careful. Never go there out of curiosity. Modern Gnosticism is nothing but a continuation of ancient Gnosticism. It is an indescribable mixture, an indescribable jumble. Everything there is confused together, and it is all founded upon man himself and upon human powers alone. God preserve you; never set foot on those stairs. So, marriage is not unclean, but neither is it the perfect state. For this reason, as I told you, the form of marriage will not exist in the Kingdom of God. What happened after the Fall? Into the element of pleasure...

an element of impurity entered and took up residence. This element of pleasure is not limited to sexual relations; it is present wherever pleasure exists, even in eating. It entered human life and became incorporated into it. This is why a woman goes to receive the prayer after giving birth to her child—something that seems incomprehensible. Is the child, then, not clean? Is the mother called unclean while the child is clean? How can this be? It is because wherever the element of pleasure enters after the Fall, desire in its evil...

and sinful aspect also enters and becomes embedded, just as barnacles attach themselves to the hull of a ship. In the broader sense, Christ is pure—not merely in this particular respect, but pure in every way. And so I tell you this. John the Evangelist says in his First Epistle, in the third chapter: “Little children, it has not yet been revealed what we shall be; but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him. And everyone who has this hope purifies himself, just as He is pure.” The person who has the hope of the resurrection of the dead purifies himself just as He is pure. Who is “He”? Christ is pure. You see, then, that the matter of purity is...

very broad and does not refer only to sexual matters. It is much wider than that. The Apostle Paul says to Timothy: “Whatever things are true, whatever things are pure, whatever things are of good report,” and so forth. Whatever things are pure, whatever things possess purity—think upon these things and put them into action. Purity is a great thing, my beloved. That is precisely why I have dwelt on it a little longer. Let us continue. “Since we are counted worthy to partake of the flesh of the spiritual Lamb, let us partake of the head together with the feet, understanding the head as His divinity and the feet as His humanity.”

This gives us another opportunity to repeat what has been said countless times: the Old Testament has immense value and significance. The whole of it is a prophecy; the whole of it is a type, a foreshadowing. This is why we have typological interpretation, which is another form of prophecy, showing what would come to pass in the New Testament, specifically in the person of Jesus Christ. In Exodus 12:9, we read the following. God says to Moses: “You shall tell the people who are still in Egypt”—one plague still remains, the last, in which all the firstborn of the Egyptians will die—“you shall slaughter a lamb, one for each household.”

You shall neither boil it nor eat it raw, but roasted. You shall not break a bone of it: “You shall not break a bone.” The Evangelist John recalls this: “Not one of Christ’s bones was broken” upon the Cross. As for the two thieves, he says, they broke their legs: “They broke their legs.” They struck their legs—the shinbones—with a club and shattered the bones to bring about death, because the thieves were still alive. Christ had already died, so there was no need to break His bones. This was a prophecy: “You shall not break a bone of it.” You shall eat the lamb from its head to its feet. You shall eat it whole.

You shall eat it throughout the night. Whatever you are unable to eat, together with the bones, you shall burn before daybreak. Everything shall be consumed by fire; nothing shall remain.

My dear friends, this entire ordinance, which existed among the Hebrews and continues to this day, concerns their Passover lamb. It includes these unusual details: no bone is to be broken; the lamb is not to be raw or boiled; it is to be eaten with bitter herbs, and so forth. This immediately suggests that it is a ritual meal, not an ordinary meal. That is very important. At the first level of meaning, of course, God indicates that this is a ritual meal.

To this day, the Jews eat their Passover lamb ritually. Take note of this. There is also the unleavened bread. No leavened bread, He says—no bread made with sourdough—is to remain anywhere in the house, whether in a corner or in a cupboard. That is what leavened bread means: bread that has undergone fermentation. Instead, the bread is to be unleavened, without sourdough. Someone might say, “These are strange requirements.” But they are not strange. At a second level, beyond showing that this has a ritual character, God uses these unusual requirements to emphasize that a truth is hidden here, a truth that will be revealed when the proper time comes. What truth? That this was...

...a type of a reality to come. Thus it was a prophecy—a typological prophecy. A type is set before us and then interpreted. That is what typological prophecy means. See how Saint Cyril expresses it here. How are we to understand this? “Come,” he says, “let us partake of the flesh of the spiritual Lamb.” Come, he says, let us partake, let us share in and eat the flesh of the spiritual Lamb; and let us eat this spiritual Lamb from His head to His feet: “The head being understood as His divinity, and the feet as His humanity.”

Ah...

And feet. He is the Lamb of God. What did Saint John the Baptist proclaim so prophetically? “Behold, the Lamb of God.” “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away”—who takes upon His shoulders—the sin of the world. A lamb. Why a lamb? Because the sins of the world would be atoned for through sacrifice. This is why the Son of God, though He became man, is called a lamb. What, then, does it mean to eat the Lamb’s head and feet? The head signifies His divinity; it is an allusion to His divinity. And what are the feet? His humanity. Therefore, come, let us partake of the divine-human nature of Jesus Christ. My dear friends, you know that when we receive Holy Communion, we partake of this spiritual Lamb, of His head and His feet. How do we partake? By eating Christ’s flesh and drinking His blood; and His flesh, His deified flesh, is inseparably united to God the Word (Logos). Therefore...

Therefore, we partake both of the divine nature and of the human nature. Needless to say, in Jesus Christ these two natures, divine and human—which is why He is called the God-Man—remain unconfused. Thank you.

Is the created mingled with the uncreated, or the divine with the human? No, they are not mingled. The natures remain unconfused. Likewise, when I partake of the Body and Blood of Christ, this does not mean that I have received the divine essence, as though I were partaking of the divine essence itself. No. I partake of Christ, who possesses the divine essence. You see, then, the value and significance of this type in the Old Testament. That is why so many things there are—if I may use the expression—logically irregular. Solecism properly refers to syntax, but what I mean here is that they appear logically inverted and strange.

Someone may ask, “What does the Word of God mean by presenting this strange feature here?” It draws the reader’s attention to the fact that God has hidden something here—He has hidden something. And indeed, Saint Cyril continues: “O hearers of the Holy Gospels, let us be persuaded by John the Theologian.” You who read and listen to John the Evangelist, let us be persuaded by the words of the Theologian. “For he who said, ‘In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God,’ went on to say, ‘And the Word became flesh.’” The one who said that in the beginning was the Word—that is...

...at the beginning of space and time, the beginning of creation—the Word already was. He existed. Therefore, He exists before created existence. The Word is consequently not a creature; therefore, the Word is God. That is why John goes on to say: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” He was always God. He did not become God at some point. As we said last year in our previous discussions, He did not become God through spiritual advancement, as though He had progressed spiritually and attained theosis. No. God the Word is God by nature—God by nature. The same Evangelist who said that the Word is God says a little further on: “And the Word became flesh.” The Word became man. Here, then, we have the fulfillment of the type of the spiritual Lamb, as I told you: Jesus Christ is the God-Man. If you wish to know the criterion of our salvation, I hasten to tell you once again—and I shall say it forever; we must always say this: the criterion of our salvation is the divine-human person of Jesus Christ. It is not Jesus merely as man, nor God the Word apart from His humanity, neither the one nor the other—as Saint Cyril will tell us shortly—but the God-Man, Jesus Christ. This is the criterion of our salvation. Therefore, we must believe in Christ’s divine-human nature. Listen to how Saint Cyril puts it: “For it is not right to worship a mere man...”

“...nor is it reverent to speak of God alone, apart from His humanity.” It is not right or holy to worship one who is merely a man; neither is it true piety to worship only His divinity. What, then, is correct? We must worship Christ in His divine-human nature—not His divinity alone, nor His humanity alone, but Christ in His divine-human nature. “For if Christ is God, as indeed He is, but did not assume humanity, then we have become strangers to salvation.” If, he says, He is only God and did not assume human nature, then we are alienated from salvation. Please understand: whether I deny Christ’s human nature or deny His divine nature, I am alienated from salvation. I will not be saved. Let me tell you who throughout history denied one nature or the other. Monophysitism—or, earlier in chronological terms, Docetism—held that the Son of God possessed only the divine nature...

...and possessed human nature only in appearance, seemingly and in an illusory way. Let me explain, my dear friends, how this teaching appears when Christ is accepted only in His divine nature or only in His human nature. Docetism, as I mentioned, says that Christ was not truly crucified upon the Cross because He did not possess a real human nature, but only an apparent, imaginary one. Later, the so-called Monophysitism succeeded this Docetism. Needless to say, this teaching was opposed and condemned by the Ecumenical Councils. But the final blow suffered by Monophysitism came with...

...the restoration of the holy icons, when the last great Ecumenical Council, the Seventh, addressed the issue. You know that behind the persecution of the icons, Monophysitism was concealed in another form. What exactly was Monophysitism? Listen.

It claimed that the divine cannot be depicted. The answer was: Since God became man, I can depict God who became man. I certainly do not depict His divine nature, but I do depict His human nature.

They said, “Not even that.” For within Iconoclasm there was this plainly Monophysite position. The very word “Monophysitism” means that the human nature was absorbed by the divine nature and disappeared. We find Monophysitism lurking throughout every century, even to this day, especially in Protestantism. I will tell you something a man once related to me on a train. A Protestant had visited his village, and this man was asking me about such matters. He said, “That Protestant told us that Christ certainly rose with His body, but when He was taken up into heaven at the Ascension, His human nature dissolved by itself. Now, as pure spirit, God the Word returned to His former state in heaven.” My dear friends, the millenarians say the same thing: that Christ is now in heaven as a spirit and will return to the world as a spirit at His Second Coming. But what does Christ Himself say in the twenty-fifth chapter of Matthew? “When the Son of Man comes in His glory with the holy angels.” What did He say? “When the Son of Man comes.”

Did He say, “When the Son of God comes”? No, He said, “the Son of Man.” What does this mean? Having ascended into heaven, He sat at the right hand as man. Indeed, our salvation lies precisely in the fact that human nature ascended into heaven. Monophysitism therefore mutilates salvation; it cuts salvation short. There is no salvation in Monophysitism. There is also the diametrically opposite error. Pay attention: the claim that Christ has no divine nature, but only a human nature. This phenomenon and these positions are not new, of course. Pay attention—they are certainly not new.

The Church confronted this issue in the person of Arius at the First Ecumenical Council. You see the contrast: at the Seventh Council, the issue of Iconoclasm and Monophysitism—only God the Word, not man. At the First Council, the issue of Arianism—only man, not God. This is what Arius taught. Today, this Arianism is widespread throughout the Western world, throughout Europe. Unfortunately, we also have it here. Not a few of our Christians, our Orthodox Christians—if they can still be called Orthodox—say that Christ is not God, but merely a good man. They deny His divine nature, and consequently, by denying His divine nature...

...they become—as Saint Cyril says here—“strangers to salvation.” They become alien to salvation; they are estranged from it. In other words, there is no salvation. That is why I told you: the criterion of salvation is neither Christ considered only in His divinity nor Christ considered only in His humanity, but the divine-human person of Christ. Christ’s human nature is worthy of worship because of the hypostatic union. We have one person, not two persons—one person. God the Word did not enter into a man; He became man. Therefore, His humanity is worthy of worship. This is why, when we venerate the icon of Christ, our veneration passes, according to Saint John of Damascus, to the prototype. It passes on to the prototype.

But before the Holy Chalice, our veneration is worship. We kneel—you see, we kneel. We offer worship before the Holy Chalice because Christ’s Body and Blood are truly present there. In an icon, however, we do not have Christ’s Body and Blood; we have a painted image. Therefore, the veneration passes to the prototype. But here, in the Holy Chalice, we have Christ Himself. That is why, when we approach to receive Holy Communion, we renew our confession at the last moment: “I believe also...” That word “also” means, “I still believe.” Let me say it once again: Lord, I will confess it to You, because the priest will soon say, “With fear of God, faith, and love, draw near.” Faith. Faith in what? Precisely in this. Pay attention, pay attention, pay attention—to this very point: “I believe also...”

“That this is truly Your Blood, and this is truly Your Body.” What I am about to receive is Your Blood. It is neither a type nor a symbol. It is Your Blood. And what I am about to receive is Your Body. If I do not have faith in this, then I am guilty of unbelief, and I will receive punishment from God. This is very serious. It is the very heart of our faith. That is why the Apostle Paul says—as I told you yesterday, though I did not explain it because I moved away from the subject—that preparation is not merely a matter of living a moral life. It is also a matter of faith. And he says that this is why many among you are sick

and quite a few have died: precisely because you have not discerned the Body and Blood of the Lord. What does it mean that you “have not discerned” them? You thought they were bread and wine. You see how serious this matter is. It is a cornerstone of our salvation. It is our very salvation. And the Saint continues. Thank you.

“Let Him be worshipped as God, and let it be believed that He also became man.” The Son of God is to be worshipped as God, but we must also believe that He became man. “For neither is it beneficial to call Him man without acknowledging His divinity, nor is it saving to confess His divinity without also confessing His humanity.” Neither one by itself is enough. “Let us confess the coming of the King and Physician; for Jesus the King, when He came to heal, girded Himself with the linen cloth of humanity and healed that which was diseased. The perfect Teacher of infants became an infant among infants, that He might make the foolish wise. The heavenly Bread came down to earth”

“to feed those who were starving.” I will dwell on that last phrase: “The heavenly Bread came down.” He says, “I am the Bread which came down from heaven.” He came down to feed those who were starving. And now we come to the second paragraph: “But the children of the Jews reject Him who has come and await the one who will come wickedly. They refused the true Christ, while they themselves, having been deceived, await the deceiver. In this too the Savior is shown to be true, for He said: ‘I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name, him you will receive.’”

This passage from the second paragraph says the following: the Jews have rejected the One who came, while they await the one who has not yet come. They abandoned the true Christ, but because they themselves were deceived, they await the deceiver. Thus Christ’s prophecy is fulfilled here: “I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name”—that is, in his own name—“him you will receive.” Here we have

an allusion, my dear friends, to the coming Antichrist. You know that the Jews have not accepted Christ to this day, at least not as a people. As individuals, of course, they did accept Him, for the first Church was made up of Jews. The first Church, the first one hundred and twenty gathered in the Upper Room, and the first three thousand who believed the preaching of the Apostle Peter, were Jews, Hebrews. But as a people they have not yet believed. You know that the Jews will believe on the eve of the Antichrist—or, more precisely, in the days of the Antichrist. But how will they believe? The final preaching of metanoia, of repentance,

will be proclaimed by the two prophets of the Apocalypse, one of whom is Elijah. They will preach repentance, and then those who believe—not the people as a whole, no, but those individuals who believe—will be saved. Yet as an officially constituted people, they will have built the Temple of Solomon, where the Antichrist will be worshipped, and they will confess him as the Messiah, as Christ. The Lord said this plainly: when that other man comes, you will receive him. You did not receive Me. Does it not strike you that two thousand years have passed and, although the prophecies are

clear that the Messiah is coming, and so forth, for two thousand years the Messiah has not appeared? He has not appeared in the way the Jews expect Him, of course. They are still waiting for him. And do you know what has happened to them? This deceived people, in their stubbornness, have clung to a tradition, but only to its letter, only to its outward form. They could not see the spirit behind the letter. It is as the Apostle Paul writes: when Moses came down from Sinai, his face shone so brightly, because he partook of divine glory, that the Jews asked him to place a veil over his face, over his head, because they could not gaze upon it.

The Apostle says that this veil now lies over the eyes of the Jews, so that they do not see the divine glory and do not understand. My dear friends, after watching and waiting for two thousand years, this people reached the following conclusion. For if someone who has gone astray persists in his pride, he flounders from one delusion to another, sinking ever deeper and becoming mired in them. What conclusion did they reach? Seeing that the Messiah still had not come, they said: “The Messiah is not a person. The Messiah is a people—our people. Therefore, the Messiah is the people of Israel.” Just look at that.

The Messiah, the people of Israel, will now take on the role of conquering the whole world. For, they say, the Messiah will be worshipped by all nations. The prophecies say, “All the nations shall come to Zion,” and so forth. Yes, they will come to worship the Messiah. And, if you like, to this day all nations go to venerate the life-giving Tomb of Christ. Yes, they do. The prophecy has been fulfilled. “No,” the Jews say, “this people is the Messiah and will fulfill the role of the Messiah.” And these wretched people went so far as to create so-called Zionism, which is a true curse, a true malediction, and a true blasphemy against both God and humanity.

A true curse. For you know that we hear this not only in closed religious circles, but also in broader national and political circles. It was even raised at the United Nations a year or two ago—you will remember that the newspapers reported it—where Zionism was called the curse of the nations. When this was disclosed, it was published in America, and the press throughout the world picked it up. The Zionists were terribly alarmed. This is the familiar Zionism that, in my view, has exerted a destructive influence among the nations. This conflict—and this is not merely something old, but something very ancient, going back even to the time of the Romans—

The Romans destroyed Jerusalem to its foundations. The Jewish people later succeeded—God permitted it, for all things fall within God’s plans—in reestablishing their state. The nation had always existed; it was their state that they sought to reestablish. Certain forms of Zionism, however, have pursued retaliation and domination over other nations. This is the Zionism I condemn. Read the many documents and books that have circulated,

even outside religious circles, I repeat, which speak against Zionism. These are the deeds and these are the days of Zionism. “It would also be good to put a question to the Jews.” The Saint says that it would be good for us to ask the Jews a question: “Is the prophet Isaiah, who says that Emmanuel will be born of a virgin, true or false?” Answer us, you Jews. The prophet Isaiah said that Emmanuel—do you know what Emmanuel means? The Evangelist interprets it: “God with us,” which, being translated, means “God with us”—

said that God would be born of a virgin. “God with us”—with us, not “with wrath,” but together with us: God is with us. Ah, so He is God. Tell us, then, you Jews: is Isaiah speaking the truth when he says that the Messiah, who is God, will be born of the Virgin? Tell us: is he true or false? “For if they accuse him of falsehood, there is nothing surprising in that.” If they say that Isaiah speaks falsely, there is nothing astonishing about it. “For it is their custom not only to accuse the prophets of falsehood, but also to stone them.”

It is their custom not only to call the prophets liars, but also to stone them. So there is nothing astonishing if they say, “Isaiah is a liar.” “But if the prophet is true, show us Emmanuel. And will the one who is to come, the one whom you await, be born of a virgin or not?” Tell us: will the one who is to come be born of a virgin, or not? We therefore say to you: “For if he is not born of a virgin, you accuse the prophet of falsehood.” You are making the prophet out to be a liar. “But if you expect this of someone still to come, why do you reject what has already happened?” If, however, you are waiting for another Messiah,

if you are waiting for a future Messiah, why did you reject what has already happened? And what is that? That Jesus was born of a virgin. But these wretched people fabricated myth upon myth, and these myths still circulate today. You know that Porphyry, a pagan writer and disciple of the philosopher Plotinus, and Celsus, also a pagan writer, fabricated such blasphemous and dreadful lies against the person of Christ that...

that I would not dare repeat them, lest I plant an evil thought in your minds. I will tell you only this.

Today, my dear friends, newspapers and magazines publish these things. They repeat endlessly the claim that Christ was born of an illicit union of that kind. Indeed, they even claim to have identified His father. “It was not Joseph,” they say. They even claim to know his name—yes, if you please, they claim to know the name of the man by whom this Jesus was born. What can I tell you? Listen, I say it again: these things continue to be published to this day. One might well say, “Oh, journalists! Do you not have even a little shame within you?”

Are you given pieces of silver to publish these things? Do you not have the courage to say, “I will not publish this; I refuse”? How is it that you can refuse to publish something contrary to your newspaper’s political line, sir, yet you do not refuse to publish something that insults your Lord, in whose name you were baptized? What is happening? They have no shame; they have nothing at all, apart from the exceptions, of course. My dear friends, this is a dreadful age. I tell you only that these are not new things; all these attacks directed against the person of Jesus Christ are merely old accusations being repeated. Paragraph three: “Let the Jews remain in error, since they so desire; but let the Church of God be glorified. For we confess that God the Word truly became man, not by the will of a man and a woman, as the heretics say,”

“but, according to the Gospel, He became man of a virgin and the Holy Spirit—not in appearance, but in truth. And that He truly became man of a virgin, wait for the proper point in the teaching, and you shall receive the proofs.” Let us leave the Jews to their error, together with those who Judaize. For as we used to say, there were Greeks and those who became Greek in culture; barbarians—non-Greeks—became Hellenized, meaning that they spoke Greek and thought in Greek ways. Today we have Orthodox Christians who Judaize, meaning that they think in Jewish ways. Yes, let us leave them alone. Do they wish to remain in their unbelief? Then let them remain there.

He says, “Let the Church of God glorify God.” We confess that God the Word truly became man, not by the will of a man and a woman. Saint Cyril puts this discreetly, because he must have had Celsus in mind; for a hundred years later Origen answered Celsus. Although Celsus’s work has not survived, we know what he said from Origen’s replies and refutations. Origen, of course, lived before Saint Cyril. Saint Cyril, therefore, must have known Origen’s work Against Celsus—that is, his discourse.

Actually, it is not merely a discourse; it is a whole work, a very large book, written in answer to Celsus. And Origen answers him. That is why Saint Cyril says, “He was not born of a man and a woman, but became man from a Virgin and the Holy Spirit, according to the Gospel,” just as the Gospel tells us. And again, “not in appearance”—not merely seemingly, as the Docetists taught—“but in truth,” truly and really. “And for the proofs that He truly became man from a Virgin, await the proper time.” All these things, then, we shall discuss as the catechesis continues. And since our time has now come to an end, we too, my dear friends, shall continue with them next time.
