Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem presents Christology pastorally so that believers may be strengthened in faith, pursue salvation, and become saints and witnesses. The lecture warns against rationalism that rejects whatever cannot be understood and urges humility concerning truths the Holy Spirit has not disclosed in Scripture. Christ is the only-begotten Son according to His divinity, while biblical references to His brothers concern His human kinship and do not deny the perpetual virginity of the Theotokos.

Beloved, we have reached paragraph eleven of Saint Cyril’s eleventh catechetical lecture. As you can see, before we go on, both the previous lecture and this one present us, paragraph by paragraph, with wondrous, useful, and important aspects of Christology. In a beautiful way, we are learning Christology—that is, everything concerning Jesus Christ. This is extremely important. And we are learning it simply, within the setting of catechesis: as a pastoral offering, we might say, not an academic one.
Cyril does not teach from an academic chair; he carries out a pastoral ministry, preparing believers through knowledge of the fundamental doctrine of our faith—the doctrine of the divinity of the Holy Trinity—so that they may become true believers. For this was still the heroic age. Although the persecutions had passed, it was still the heroic age, when the Church brought catechumens in through one door and sent martyrs out through the other. This must be true of our Church in every age: she must produce martyrs and Saints. For if she does not produce martyrs and Saints, then her presence serves no purpose.
Beloved, if what we are saying here at this moment does not prepare you and make you ready to become martyrs and Saints, then it has failed in its purpose. It is neither presumptuous nor prideful to say that we must become Saints. God Himself says so. It is a command: “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” Notice the words “you shall become” here, in relation to the question raised previously. Are you a Saint? I am becoming one. But is that not prideful? No, because God tells me to do so. Indeed, God commands it: “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” Our purpose, then, beloved, is to become Saints. We must be saved. That is why we come here: to learn. This is a path, a way of salvation. And so I ask you...
We realize what the Word of God offers us—not, I repeat, as an academic presentation, but as a pastoral offering, even though its expression may possess a certain depth. Yet this depth does not make us dizzy. That is the mark of teaching offered pastorally to ordinary people: its depth is beyond our sight, yet the person looking into it does not become dizzy. The Gospel is like this as well. Its depth is unfathomable, but when someone takes the Gospel in his hands and reads it, he does not become dizzy, because the Gospel knows how to present this depth simply, in a way ordinary people can understand. And that is immensely valuable. So let us continue, beloved, and consider...
...these aspects of Christology, so that we may be firmly established in our faith in the person of Jesus Christ and not be shaken, but may stand firm in this unstable age of ours and be saved.
“He therefore begot Him, not as human reasoning imagines, but as He alone knows. We do not claim that we can say how He begot Him; we affirm only that it was not in the manner people suppose.” The Father, then, begot Him, but not in the way human beings beget. We must not understand it according to the human notion of birth. Rather, the Father begot the Son in the manner known to Him. How He begot Him is known to God alone. For this reason, the generation of Jesus Christ is a Mystery.
It bears no relation whatsoever to the generation of beings within this created world, where the phenomenon of birth occurs. Therefore, we do not claim that we can explain how the Father begot the Son. We affirm only that He did not beget Him in the way most people imagine—that is, according to human conditions and categories. “And it is not only we who do not know the generation of the Son from the Father; every created nature is likewise ignorant of it.” He then explains this with the phrase: “For the earth cannot describe the hypostasis—the person—of its own potter and maker.” It is not only we, he says, who do not know...
It is not only we who do not know the generation of the Son from the Father; every created nature is ignorant of it. Everything that is begotten remains ignorant of how the Son was begotten from the Father. And here I want you to pay attention to a beautiful example. I shall give you a similar example of my own, and I want you to understand it: “For the earth cannot describe the hypostasis—the person—of its own potter and maker.” What is this earth? It is clay. That is what “earth” means here: clay. The clay held in the hands of the potter and maker cannot comprehend—the earth, the clay cannot comprehend...
What is the potter?
I shall apply this to another, similar example. Clay, of course, is not merely without reason; it is also lifeless. So I shall transfer the example to an animal—to our cat. Beloved, our cat cannot know who we truly are. Of course, she sees us in the house. Of course, she recognizes in us, so to speak, the masters of the household. What I mean is that she knows we are the ones who feed her, give her water, stroke her, care for her, and love her. She loves us, rubs against our legs, and so forth. The cat senses all these things. But she does not even suspect that we possess what is called rational thought.
Can the cat possibly grasp what we human beings are—that we think and are capable of developing civilization? We build a house and fill it with appliances, marvelous creations of the intellect. The cat enjoys them: she sits on the radiator or in front of the television. Yet she has no idea that we made them. What does “we made them” even mean to her? She understands nothing of it. Do you understand this example? The cat has no rational intellect. She enjoys these things but does not understand them. The same applies here, beloved, though on an entirely different level, to God’s knowledge and man’s understanding. I said “God’s intellect,” but that is not correct. God does not possess an intellect in the human sense; intellect is something we speak of in relation to man. But how else can I express it?
God’s manner of knowing is one thing, and man’s manner of understanding is another. Thus we see that God creates the world; we say that God is without beginning; and we say that God the Father begets the Son. Because we possess reason, we understand something of these truths, but we cannot comprehend anything further.
Just as our cat does not understand, neither do we. These things exist on different levels. Through the example I gave you—which Saint Cyril expresses through the example of clay, while I used the example of the cat—you can understand why we do not comprehend. It is because of the way our nous, our spiritual intellect, is constituted. It has limits. I was telling you this on another recent occasion. Thank you.
The human nous has limits. It is a sign of great pride for a person to imagine that his intellect has no limits and that it continues to evolve. According to the theory of evolution, some believe that man is always evolving: if he has reached his present condition today, then perhaps five hundred million years from now he will have developed differently, even in his mind. Beloved, from man’s first appearance until today, he has possessed the same kind of intellect. Its structure is the same; its rational categories are the same. Reaching a high level of civilization is one thing; the faculty we possess becoming something fundamentally different is another.
The faculty I possess—the brain being the organ upon which the nous operates—always remains the same. Always the same. Human reason is constituted in such a way that it corresponds to the created things around it. If human understanding were to change, the structure of the universe, of everything and every phenomenon, would also have to change. For the four categories of human thought are based upon what we call—whatever name we give it—the reality that surrounds us. We say, for example, “A rose is beautiful.”
What does “is beautiful” mean? A person in any age could say this: “The rose is beautiful; the rose has a lovely fragrance.” For me to say all this, my reason must correspond to what exists around me, outside me. If my reason were to change, my environment would also have to change. Let me give you a very characteristic example. In 1963, the renowned Heisenberg came to Greece and delivered a lecture to a small, private gathering.
The lecture was published in a journal, and I read it. He said this: suppose we have an electron inside a box divided into two sections—two rooms or compartments, we might say. If the electron is in one compartment, it is not in the other. If it is in compartment A, it is not in B; if it is in B, it is not in A. This is perfectly logical, because it follows Aristotle’s law of the excluded middle. I must be either here or there. I cannot be neither here nor there.
Heisenberg then says that, strangely, the electron is in both compartment A and compartment B. But this contradicts our logic. And so he said: either we must change the structure of our logic, or we must change our language so that we can understand these things. Yet our structure remains what it is. What, then, are we to do? How are we to understand the phenomenon? That is the question. This is why I explain to you that my cat cannot even conceive what it means for me to possess reason. And I, as a human being, cannot conceive how God knows, because my nature is constituted so that I can function within the universe...
...as I presently function within it, and the structure of my reason cannot change. For that to happen, the structure of the universe would have to change; the structure of everything around me would have to change. Thus we understand that the human nous—not the brain, but the nous of rational spiritual beings—the human nous has limits. It has limits, and we must not be overly optimistic and say that one day, somehow, our minds will unfold in an entirely different way. The human mind always remains what it is.
Good!
“Not only do the heavens remain ignorant of this generation, but so does every angelic nature.” He says that not only are the heavens ignorant of the generation of the Son, but so are all the angels.
“For suppose someone could ascend to the first heaven, contemplate the order of the angels there, approach them, and ask how God begot His own Son. They might answer, ‘There are greater and higher beings above us; ask them.’ Ascend to the second and third heaven and, if possible, reach the Thrones, Dominions, Principalities, and Powers. Yet even if someone could reach them—which is impossible—they too would decline to explain it, for they do not know.” Let us suppose, he says, that we go and meet the first order of angelic beings. As we know, there are nine orders of angels, as Holy Scripture itself teaches. Their names are taken from there: Angels, Archangels, Principalities, Dominions, Powers, Thrones, and so forth, including the Virtues.
The Cherubim and Seraphim complete the nine orders. So we go to the first order we encounter and say to those Angels, “Tell us how the Son of God was begotten.” They answer, “We do not know. Go higher and see whether those above us know.” We go higher, and they too will say, “We do not know.” Thus the whole created order, visible and invisible, remains ignorant of how the Son was begotten of the Father. “I have always marveled at the meddlesome curiosity of those rash people who, through what they imagine to be reverence, fall into impiety.” I too, he says, have always marveled at this.
He marvels at the meddlesome curiosity of those rash people who imagine themselves devout but fall into impiety. For many people are willing to accept only what their minds can understand. Whatever their minds cannot understand—the realm of divine mysteries—they reject.
They reject it. Such people are nothing but meddlesome rationalists. The Millennialists, for example, say, “There are no mysteries.” But a mystery is precisely something that a person does not know and cannot comprehend. My dear friends, mysteries exist everywhere and at all times. When we speak here of mysteries, we do not mean the seven Mysteries. Thank you.
We are using the word in a particular sense. We mean everything around us whose nature remains unknown to us. This created world itself contains so many mysteries that we do not understand. Anyone who has even a slight acquaintance with science and some knowledge of things can confess that countless mysteries exist. I once gave you the example of one of my teachers of literature when I was a student. He said that knowledge is like this: imagine a circle—he drew one on the board—and its circumference touches the unknown. When the circle of our knowledge is small, we imagine that the unknown is also small. But as our knowledge increases, the circle grows; its circumference also grows and touches more and more of the space surrounding it.
That surrounding space is the realm of the unknown. The more a person knows, the more clearly he realizes that the mysteries multiply. Therefore, only a wise person can understand and confess that mysteries surround us. By contrast, a foolish person cannot acknowledge that mysteries—that is, unknown realities—exist. This applies to the visible creation and to the invisible creation, which includes the angels. And if we tried to ascend to the Creator Himself and pry curiously into matters concerning Him, what would we gain? That is why we are warned again and again that rationalism is the great worm that consumes a person. Beware of rationalism.
Do not reject what you cannot understand. Never reject it. Someone once compared this—it is a humorous illustration—to a person eating a fish.
We have a fish on our plate. We open it with our knife and fork, eat the flesh, and place the bones to one side. No one has ever thought of eating the bones, because they would lodge in his throat. The meaning is this: eat what can be eaten. Learn what you are capable of knowing. What you cannot know, set aside.
Why, then, do you place the fishbone alongside the knowledge of God? Why do you stumble, my brother, and say, “I do not understand this, so I reject it and say it does not exist”? It exists even though you do not understand it. Is that not a rash thing to do? This is why Saint Cyril says, “I too have always marveled at the rash,” and so forth. “First tell me, most audacious man, how a Throne differs from a Dominion; then inquire so curiously into the things of Christ beyond the angels.” First tell me, he says, most audacious man, how one angelic order differs from another—how the Thrones differ from the Dominions. Then come and tell me who Christ is. Why pry into something that lies beyond the Thrones and Dominions, when you do not even understand the distinctions among the angels?
“Even the Holy Spirit has not spoken in the Scriptures about the generation of the Son from the Father.” The Holy Spirit Himself has not told us in the Scriptures how the Father begot the Son. “Why, then, do you pry into what the Holy Spirit did not write in the Scriptures? When you do not understand what has been written, why do you pry into what has not been written? Many questions are contained in the Scriptures. We do not comprehend what is written, so why do we investigate what is not written? Let it be enough for us to know that God begot one only Son.” This is a beautiful statement. The Holy Spirit did not reveal to the Spirit-bearing authors how this generation took place. Yet the Holy Spirit knows what is searched out, even the depths of God.
Since the Spirit of God did not write it or record it in Holy Scripture, it is a mystery and will always remain a mystery. Saint Cyril makes a very fine point: we cannot fully understand even the things that have been written. We cannot fully know what is already written in Holy Scripture. How, then, can we pry into things that are not written? Many questions arise within the Holy Scriptures and continue to remain unknown. What do we truly know from Holy Scripture? My dear friends, we know very little of Holy Scripture. We are always trying to learn, yet we never reach the fullness of the knowledge recorded by the Spirit of God. It is enough for us to know this:
God begot one only Son. That is all. How this happened and what its manner was, I do not know. As I have told you, the statement that God begot a Son means simply that the Son is consubstantial—homoousios—with the Father, that He is from the Father’s essence, and therefore is God. When I say that I am my father’s child, it means that I bear my father’s cells, because I received them from him. I received my father’s cells; they were nourished and grew, and thus I came to be. But in essence, what are my father’s cells? They are of my father’s essence. So it is here as well. When Saint Cyril speaks of generation, he means that the Son is from the Father’s essence. Beyond this, we can know nothing.
“Do not be ashamed to confess your ignorance, since you share that ignorance with the angels.” Do not be ashamed to say, “I do not know,” for the angels do not know either. “He who begot knows the One begotten of Him, and the One begotten of Him knows the One who begot Him.” Only the Father who begot the Son knows Him, and only the Son knows the One who begot Him, the Father. Jesus Christ Himself says this, as you know. The One who begot knows what He has begotten, and the Scriptures testify that the One begotten is God. What do the Scriptures say? They say that He is God. “For who among men knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man within him? So also no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.” And again: “As the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son also to have life in Himself.”
“So that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father”; and, “As the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so the Son gives life to whom He wills.” This alone we know: as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son also to have life in Himself; all honor the Son just as they honor the Father; and as the Father gives life to whom He wills, so the Son gives life to whom He wills. “Neither was He who begot diminished”—pay attention to this—“nor does the One begotten lack anything.” Saint Cyril adds parenthetically, “I know that these things have been said many times, but they have been repeated many times for your security.” I too would say, my dear friends, as I follow the sacred texts of Saint Cyril, that I have told you these things many times as well.
We repeat them precisely for your security. What does this mean? When we say that the Son was begotten, the Father did not lose anything, nor does the Son lack anything that the Father possesses. Do you understand? When a man begets another human being, he loses something: his seed leaves him so that another human being may come into existence. What does that mean? It means that a man gives up something. But the Father lost nothing when He begot the Son. Here, then, is another mysterious aspect: “There is one Son, eternally begotten of the Father.”
“He was not begotten in time, but was begotten before all ages; nor did He gradually increase until He became the Son, but He was begotten from the beginning as He now is.” I would like to explain something here. There is one Son, he says, who is begotten and has been begotten of the Father eternally, without beginning. What does this word mean? What is the difference between being without beginning and being everlasting? Please pay attention to this. When we speak of eternal life, or say that a human being will live in the eternal Kingdom of God, we mean something that had a beginning but has no end. Every human being began to exist. Before I was conceived, I did not exist. I began to exist from the moment when...
I was conceived and then born.
Since I begin to exist at a particular moment, this means that I did not exist before. But I shall exist eternally, either in the Kingdom of God or in Hell. In other words, I shall never cease to exist; I shall always be. What, then, does “eternally” mean? It means something that has no end, although it did have a beginning. What is the difference, then, between being eternal and being everlasting without beginning? The Greek word for the latter is aidios. To be aidios means to have neither end nor beginning. Therefore, the Son is not merely...
eternally begotten, but begotten without beginning. We belong to the realm of what has a beginning but no end, because we began to exist, although we shall have no end. The Son of God, however, has neither end nor beginning. This is the difference between being eternal and being without beginning. “We believe in the Son of God, the Only-Begotten, begotten of the Father, true God.” Saint Cyril now comes to the words “true God.” “For the true God does not beget something false or unlike Himself, nor did He first deliberate and then afterward beget.” The true God, he says, does not beget something false or different from Himself. Nor did He at some later point decide to beget. It was not as though the Father once existed alone and then decided to beget a Son. The Father is always the Father. There was never, if we may speak this way, some peculiar period when the first Person was not yet the Father. He is eternally the Father, because the Father is without beginning, and the Son is likewise without beginning together with Him. Neither had a beginning. Therefore, the Father never existed without being the Father. He did not decide to beget as we decide that we want to have a child.
He begot Him eternally—indeed, far more swiftly than any word we can speak or any thought we can conceive. But He begot Him without beginning, without end, eternally and timelessly. At this very moment I have something in mind, and a word is formed within me. Yet, so to speak, the Father begets the Son far more swiftly than my nous brings forth a word. The Father and the Son coincide, if we may put it this way, in respect to time. They are simultaneous.
By divine power, the generation is timeless, as we have said many times. The Father did not bring the Son from nonbeing into being, nor did He take one who was not His Son and adopt Him as a son. The Son is not from nonbeing. We are from nonbeing—that is, from what did not exist, from nothing. Only created beings—the whole creation, including even the angels—are from nonbeing. But the Son is not from nonbeing, from what did not exist. The Father Himself eternally and ineffably begot one Son, who has no brother. The Son has no brother; He is the one Only-Begotten. This is why the phrase “Only-Begotten” is emphasized in the Creed. One of the questions raised at our previous meeting was this:
Holy Scripture speaks of the brothers of Jesus. I answered you then. It speaks of the brothers of Jesus, and the name “Jesus” refers here to the human nature of God the Word. In that respect, of course, He could have brothers. Moreover, Christ calls all of us His brothers. He says prophetically, “In the midst of the Church I shall praise You, my God and my Father”—that is, in the midst of many brothers. Who are these many brothers? They are the faithful, those who become brothers of Jesus Christ by believing in Jesus Christ. We all share the same flesh, for Christ’s human nature...
is the same nature as ours: we are all children of Adam. The new Adam, Jesus Christ, is a descendant of the old Adam. As the new Adam, He assumes the old Adam in order to regenerate Adam’s descendants—and Adam himself. But I shall return to the earlier question, because it is still asked: “Very well, if He had brothers, why do you say that the Theotokos is Virgin?” Yes, you all know this supposed problem. But it is not truly a problem. The only question is who these brothers were, where they came from, and in what sense they were brothers. Otherwise there is no problem at all, because the Mother of Jesus, the Theotokos, was Virgin before giving birth, in giving birth, and after giving birth. This is beyond dispute.
Did she have other children? Then where did these brothers come from? Holy Scripture clearly tells us that when the Lord went to Nazareth, the Jews said, “Where did this wisdom come from? How does He know letters, having never studied? Is this not the son of the carpenter Joseph and of Mary? Do we not know His brothers and sisters?” And, my dear friends, do we not also have in the New Testament the epistle of Saint James, the Brother of God, who is called the Brother of God for this very reason? And there is also Jude, the Brother of God—that is, the brother of Jesus Christ. Quite simply, they were Joseph’s children. The Theotokos never became Joseph’s wife—never.
Holy Scripture says in the New Testament that the conception of Jesus Christ in the Theotokos took place before they came together. Holy Scripture states it clearly: “Before they came together, she was found to be with child.” Before they came together—this is the exact phrase of Holy Scripture. That is why Joseph was perplexed. Moreover, the prophecies of the Old Testament tell us that the Theotokos was, is, and shall remain Virgin before, during, and after giving birth. Therefore, beyond all doubt, the Theotokos had no other children. Let me give you one prophecy.
“Behold, the Virgin shall conceive and bear a Son.” You may say, “Very well, this establishes her virginity before giving birth. But do we have any prophecy concerning her virginity afterward?” Of course we do. It is the prophecy always read at every feast of the Theotokos. Ezekiel sees that wondrous vision of the northern gate of the Temple, and he is told: “Son of man, do you see this gate? God will pass through it.” Listen, if you understand the anatomy of a woman in relation to childbirth. Listen: “God will pass through this gate.” The gate was shut. “Do you see that this gate is shut?” It is clear that the gate is closed.
The Virgin—that is, the Theotokos—is the closed gate. God will pass through it, and the gate will remain closed. It will not be opened; He will pass through, and it will remain shut. This, then, is what it means that she is Virgin before giving birth, Virgin while giving birth—for God passes through while the gate remains shut—and Virgin after giving birth, because even afterward, the prophecy says, the gate will remain closed. See, then, what answer there is for those who speak so casually and recklessly, uttering so many foolish things against Jesus Christ and against the Theotokos. Therefore, my dear friends, these brothers are not Christ’s brothers in the sense that they were born of...
the Theotokos. To claim otherwise, one would first have to assume that Joseph later became the husband of the Theotokos in the full marital sense. Such ideas are entirely foreign to Holy Scripture.
Thus, Saint Cyril says that the Son has no brothers. According to His humanity, Christ had no brothers by birth. He had brothers only according to the law. You know that if a married couple who already have children were to adopt me, I would not be those children’s brother by birth or by shared essence. Yet according to the law, I would be their brother. Since these people adopted me and already had children, I would legally be their children’s brother. Christ, then, had no brothers by human birth; they were His brothers according to the law, just as Joseph was the husband of the Theotokos according to the law.
There is a husband in the full marital sense, and there is a legal husband. I say “legal” because, you understand, Jesus would never have been accepted as Mary’s child—and she might even have been stoned—if she had appeared before the people as a woman with a child who had no father. She would have been regarded as a woman guilty of a secret union. This is expressed beautifully in the service of the Akathist. The Theotokos was not such a woman, nor was her Child illegitimate. How, then, was this to be arranged? Joseph had to be regarded legally as the father and, consequently, as the husband of Mary, the Theotokos. But this was only according to the law. Jesus, therefore, had no brothers according to His humanity, nor did He have any as God.
There are no other brothers of Jesus, the Word. There is one Word and one Son of God. Nor are there two first principles; rather, the head of the Son is the Father. There is one first principle, for the Father begot the Son, true God. Since there are not two first principles, but the Father is the head of the Son, the first principle is one, and He who was begotten is true God. He is called Emmanuel, and Emmanuel means “God with us.” What is He called? He is called Emmanuel. It is a prophetic name mentioned by the Prophet Isaiah in chapter 7, verse 14. What does it mean? It is a descriptive expression. Very many Hebrew names are descriptive in this way.
It means, “God is with us.” We now come to paragraph 15: “Do you wish to know that He who was begotten of the Father is God and afterward became man?” Do you wish to learn that He is first God, begotten of the Father, and afterward became man? Then hear the prophet saying: “This is our God; no other shall be accounted beside Him. He discovered the whole way of knowledge and gave it to Jacob His servant and to Israel His beloved. Afterward He appeared upon the earth and lived among men.” This is the famous passage—the clearest and most explicit passage—from the Prophet Baruch...
chapter 3, verse 36. “This is our God.” This God of ours shall not be accounted as another. This God discovered the whole way of knowledge and gave it to His servant Jacob, to Israel His beloved. After giving it to His servant Jacob, to Israel His beloved, “afterward”—what a magnificent word!—He acted as God. In other words, in the Old Testament, God the Word, the Son, is at work. He gives the Law on Mount Sinai to the people of Israel, along with everything else He gives them.
Consider this brief phrase: “Afterward He appeared upon the earth.” Everything I am telling you now is written in Baruch. First, it says, He gives all learning, wisdom, and knowledge to Israel. “Afterward”—that is, after this—He appeared upon the earth and lived among men. What does “afterward” mean? After His divine manifestation comes His human manifestation. That is the meaning of “afterward.” My dear friends, I have told you this before, and I shall say it once again. I would like to help us rise above the commonplace notions surrounding us, and above the habits and familiarity they have created within us.
The Son of God, Jesus Christ—everything concerning Him has become wrapped in familiarity. We say, “Christ appeared upon the earth,” but we too say it merely out of habit. Try to grasp it. Strip away all these layers of familiarity and try to take hold of this passage from Baruch: “He appeared upon the earth and lived among men.” He presented Himself upon the earth; He was manifested; He appeared. The word means that He was seen, that people beheld Him. With what did they see Him? With their own eyes. The people saw Him with their own eyes. What else could they have seen Him with? With their eyes. But what kind of eyes?
Their bodily eyes. They did not see Him in an intelligible or spiritual manner, but with their physical senses. And this very God lived among men. It is inconceivable—utterly inconceivable. Later, when we reach the words of the Creed declaring that God the Word is the Creator, that He creates all things, we shall see that the One who made the universe is the very One who lived among men. My dear friends, this is inconceivable. If a person ever truly grasps it, he is overcome with awe and amazement. He is left speechless. Who is Jesus Christ? What is His true identity?
“Do you see God becoming man after the giving of the Law through Moses?” Saint Cyril asks here. Do you see God becoming man after the Law was given through Moses? For He was first God and afterward man. “Receive also a second testimony to Christ’s divinity, the passage just read”—the passage we read a short while ago. Receive another testimony that Christ is God. Listen to this passage from Psalm 44: “Your throne, O God, is unto ages of ages.”
The expression “O God” is not in the nominative case but in the vocative. We often encounter this form, especially in the Psalms. “God” may look nominative, but it is vocative, as I have told you before. We translate it: “Your throne, O God, is unto ages of ages”—forever. Saint Cyril says clearly that this is so “lest, because of His incarnate coming here among us, He should be thought afterward to have advanced into divinity.” We must not imagine that after He became man, He later attained divinity through progress, as a human being might attain theosis through spiritual growth. What does this mean? Such a person is acknowledged as a child of God through progress, not by nature. The passage continues: “Therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness above your companions.”
“Christ our God, anointed by God the Father.” Listen carefully to this passage, which again comes from Psalm 44: “Therefore God, your God, has anointed you with oil.” Why does it say “God” twice—“God, your God”? The first is vocative and the second nominative. In other words: “Therefore, O God, your God has anointed You with the oil of gladness above Your companions.” Who are His companions? Human beings, or others who share in His gifts. In other words, You are Christ. That is what “to anoint” means: You are Christ, the Anointed One.
He makes Him Christ—that is, He anoints Him. Who does? God the Father. Yet how does He address You as God? The Father anoints You to become man, and yet You are God. I repeat: “Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You, O God, with the oil of gladness.” God the Father anoints God the Son so that He may become man. What can one say, my dear friends? What can one say? And now one final passage, from paragraph sixteen, about halfway through, at verse twenty-six.
“They are one because of the dignity of their divinity, since God begot God; and they are one in their kingship. For the Father does not reign over some while the Son reigns over others, as Absalom rose up against his father. Rather, those over whom the Father reigns are the very same over whom the Son reigns.” With respect to divinity, the Father and the Son are one. In the dignity of divinity, the Father and the Son are one. Just a little earlier, there is a phrase I would simply like to mention: “Let us not produce a confused Son-Fatherhood.”
Son-Fatherhood, or the confusion of Son-Fatherhood, means the following. There were heretics who opposed the dogma of the Holy Trinity, supposedly in order to preserve the truth that God is one. They reasoned that three gods—forgive me, three persons—would mean three essences, and therefore three gods. This, of course, follows the kind of logic described by Aristotle; but this is a Mystery. It lies beyond human reason, and that is precisely why it is called a Mystery. Son-Fatherhood, then, means that the Father appears as the Son at one time, and at a later time appears as the Holy Spirit, while supposedly remaining one person. In other words, first He is the Father, then He appears as the Son, and afterward He appears as the Holy Spirit. No! This would be a confusion of the persons.
We cannot fashion things in this way, as though nothing truly changes. No. There are three persons. The Father is one person, the Son another, and the Holy Spirit another, since the Son is without beginning together with the Father and coeternal with Him. It is not that the Father becomes the Son. The Father does not become the Son. Saint Cyril then says: “They are one in the dignity of divinity, and one in the dignity of kingship. The Father reigns, and the Son also reigns.” He gives an example here. It is not like Absalom, who “rose up against his father.” We know that Absalom rebelled against his father the king, and King David—barefoot, let me add, barefoot—came down from his palace and, with only a small company...
left the city in order to save himself. Absalom had begun an uprising, a rebellion, and sought to kill his father. As I told you, David did not even have time to put on his shoes before fleeing the city. As they departed, they crossed beyond the Jordan and established there—how shall we put it?—a kingdom outside the borders of David’s kingdom; we might say, a government beyond the borders of the state. Meanwhile, Absalom presented himself as king in Jerusalem. The Son’s kingship, Saint Cyril says, is not like Absalom’s rebellion, in which Absalom rose up and seized the kingdom...
from his father. In that case, the son reigned in the city while the father reigned beyond the Jordan River. But whatever God the Father reigns over, the Son reigns over as well. For God is one, and the persons are three. “They are one because there is no disagreement or division.” There is no disagreement or division between the Father and the Son. “For the Father does not will one thing and the Son another.” Does the Father want one thing and the Son another? Does the Father decide one thing and the Son another? Does the Father think one thing and the Son another? No. “They are one because the works created by Christ are not different from those created by the Father.” It is not that some created works belong to the Father and others to the Son.
“For the creation of all things is one.” Creation is the common work of the Father and the Son. Do you know how this is expressed? The Father creates through the Son in the Holy Spirit. Therefore, whatever is under the authority of the Father is equally under the authority of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Do you know how we might put this?
Let us say it plainly.
The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit have one power, one will, and one divine uncreated energy. We do not have three divine uncreated energies or three wills, but one will, one divine uncreated energy, and one power. But, my dear friends, the time is passing. Please, hold fast to these truths. The devil, that dreadful alchemist who knows very well how to concoct such things, mixes together all these heretical tricks in every age and serves them up anew in every age. Do not imagine that they troubled only some former age and that today...
we are free of them because the Church, through her Ecumenical Councils, safeguarded the truth. Yes, the Church safeguarded the truth when the heresies arose, but these heresies continue to smolder beneath the surface, my dear friends. They are constantly reworked, dressed in new clothing, and offered to our Christians. If our Christians have not been prepared and catechized, they are in danger. This is why I appeal to you: we must have the spirit of discipleship. Under different circumstances, my dear friends, we ought to have a blackboard, notebooks, and pencils. We ought to write these things down and learn them, because only then will they truly become our own.
These truths must become our own because, as I have explained, the enemies of our faith are ready at any moment to serve up these old errors in a new form. We must therefore be ready, as the Apostle Peter says: “Always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you for a reason concerning the hope that is in you.” Christianity is our hope; this is our hope—Christianity. We must be ready whenever anyone asks us to give an account, or whenever any false teaching is served up, so that we ourselves may stand firm and also strengthen our brothers and sisters.

Τι είναι ο Κεραμέας;
σωματικά τους μάτια. Όχι κατά νοητόν τρόπον, αλλά κατ’ αισθητόν τρόπον. Και ότι αυτός ο Θεός συνανεστράφη με τους ανθρώπους. Είναι αδιανόητο. Είναι αδιανόητο. Και όταν θα δούμε παρακάτω που λέει το Σύμβολο της Πίστεως ότι ο Θεός Λόγος είναι ο Δημιουργός, τα πάντα δημιουργεί, ότι αυτός που έκανε τα σύμπαντα είναι αυτός που συνανεστράφη με τους ανθρώπους. Αγαπητοί μου, είναι αδιανόητο πράγμα. Αν κάποτε κανείς το συλλαμβάνει αυτό, τον πιάνει τρόμος, τον πιάνει έκπληξη. Μένει ενεός. Ποιος είναι ο Ιησούς Χριστός; Ποια είναι η αληθινή του, δηλαδή, ταυτότητα;
«Μία γὰρ ἡ πάντων δημιουργία», κοινή δημιουργία και του Πατρός και του Υιού. Γι’ αυτό ξέρετε πώς λέγεται η διατύπωση; Ο Πατήρ δημιουργεί, ο Πατήρ διὰ τοῦ Υἱοῦ ἐν Ἁγίῳ Πνεύματι. Ό,τι λοιπόν εξουσιάζει ο Πατήρ, το ίδιο εξουσιάζει και ο Υιός, το ίδιο εξουσιάζει και το Πνεύμα το Άγιον. Αυτό ξέρετε πώς θα μπορούσαμε να το πούμε;
