Summary

Saint Cyril contrasts Christ’s traceable human descent from David with His timeless and incomprehensible divine generation from the Father. Psalm 110’s “from the womb, before the morning star, I begot you” teaches that the Son is consubstantial with the Father and exists before the visible and invisible creation. The Old and New Testaments proclaim the same God, and rejecting the Old Testament removes the prophetic foundation for recognizing Jesus Christ.

My beloved, we are now in the fifth paragraph of the eleventh catechetical lecture of Saint Cyril, Archbishop of Jerusalem. One part of the fifth paragraph remains, and it is this: “His descent according to David is subject to time, can be traced, and has a genealogy. But His generation according to the Godhead is subject neither to time nor to place, nor can it be traced through a genealogy. For who shall declare His generation? God is Spirit. And being Spirit and without a body, He begot Him spiritually, in a generation that cannot be investigated or comprehended.”

The Son Himself says concerning the Father: “The Lord said to me: You are My Son; today I have begotten You.” This “today” does not mean something recent, but something eternal. It is a timeless “today,” before all the ages. “From the womb, before the morning star, I begot You.” Remember what we said last time concerning the human nature of Jesus Christ: it can indeed be traced. According to His humanity, as we say, He comes from the lineage of David. Saint Cyril says that it is subject to time. For when was Christ born? He was born 1,985 years ago. His human descent can be traced and set forth in a genealogy.

Holy Scripture itself proves this: “Abraham begot Isaac, Isaac begot Jacob,” and so forth. All this concerns His human nature. But there is also His divine nature, because Jesus Christ is perfect man and perfect God. Since He is also perfect God, we must therefore consider the side of His Godhead as well. He is not a mere man—“mere” in the sense of bare or only human—but the God-Man. And I shall never grow tired of saying this; I shall always say that, for every generation and every age until history comes to an end, the criterion of salvation is the divine-human person of Jesus Christ. And because Christ—

because His divine-human person—is being attacked, struck at, and insulted, I tell you: take heed. Hold fast to the divine-human person of Christ with courage, bold confession, and a readiness for martyrdom. He is the criterion of all things. Guard this as your most precious treasure. This is what Saint Kosmas the Aetolian also said. Saint Cyril says it somewhere as well, in one of his catechetical lectures, and Christ Himself said: “Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. I will tell you whom to fear: fear God, who has the power to cast you into the Gehenna of fire.”

And what does Saint Kosmas the Aetolian say? “Let them take your property,” he says. “Let them take everything, even the skin from your body. But keep Christ within you. No one can take Him from you unless you surrender Him.” Nicholas Cabasilas, in his book The Life in Christ, says that the bond between man and God, between man and Christ, is far stronger than the bond between soul and body. He says that our clothes can be taken from us, because their connection to us is loose: we put them on, and someone can strip them off. They may even strip away your very skin—

your flesh. They may even take your body from you—that is, put it to death and kill you. But unless you choose it, those who deny the faith can never take Christ from you or sever you from Him. This bond, I repeat, is deeper and stronger than the bond between soul and body. So let us hold fast, my beloved, and remember me all your lives. I do not know—forget everything else I may say and everything you have heard until today, but hold fast to this one point: the divine-human person of Christ is the criterion of all things. This is what we must preserve: His divine-human reality, perfect man and perfect God.

Guard it more carefully than the pupil of your eye. Mentioning the pupil of the eye reminds me of what Christ says to the Pharisees: “Now there is judgment: the blind see, while those who have eyes do not see.” For even before the eyes of the blind were opened, they confessed Him. Bartimaeus, the blind man near Jericho, said: “Son of David, have mercy on me. Lord Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me.” His eyes were closed, yet he confessed the divine-human nature of Christ. By saying “Lord,” he confessed His divine nature; by saying “Son of David,” he confessed His human nature. But the Pharisees, who could see and whose eyes were open, neither recognized nor perceived the divine nature of Christ.

Is this not also the criterion of who is a Christian? You are a Christian only if you believe in the divine-human person of Christ. If you do not believe this, you are not a Christian; you are cut off. And if, God forbid, any brother among our listeners has been led astray and rejects the divine nature of Christ, let him not deceive himself: he is not a Christian. No human being needs to declare him non-Christian; he has automatically severed himself from the body of Christ, the Church. Automatically. Let him understand this. I tell you because I do not know what days are coming—days of the Antichrist. Do not forget it. This will always be the criterion. Always. But now let us consider the divine nature of Christ.

“According to the Godhead, He is subject neither to time nor to place, nor can His generation be traced. For who shall declare His generation?” This is said, for example, in Isaiah 53:8. Who can relate it—that is, who can describe His generation, His divine nature? It is impossible. “God is Spirit.” God is Spirit. “Being Spirit, He begot You spiritually.” Being without a body, He begets spiritually, not bodily. It is “a generation that cannot be investigated or comprehended”—a generation that is beyond understanding and cannot become an object, we might say, of curiosity—

or of scrutiny, something for you to examine. It cannot be done. This is not something that can be made the object of research. It is impossible. For the Son Himself says concerning the Father: “The Lord said—my Lord said to me”; or rather, forgive me: “The Lord said to me: You are My Son; today I have begotten You.” This prophecy comes from the second Psalm, which, as is well known, is a messianic Psalm. The whole Psalm is messianic, apart from one exhortation spoken by David—though, of course, always by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit: “Lay hold of instruction, lest the Lord be angry,” and so forth.

It says: “The Lord said to me.” Who is this Lord who speaks to “me”? He is certainly not speaking to David. It is the one Lord speaking to the other Lord. It is God the Father saying to the Son: “You are My Son. Today I have begotten You.” God could never, ever have said to David, “Today I have begotten you.” It is therefore the Father speaking to the Son. A little earlier, this Psalm says: “Why did the nations rage, and the peoples devise vain things?” What does this mean? The nations raged, and the peoples considered and devised hollow things—vain things—

foolish things, and they set themselves against God and His Christ. When it says “His Christ,” the term “Christ,” the One who is anointed, always refers here to the human nature of the Son. The Psalm says that the Lord laughs at them and will shatter them, just as a potter uses an iron rod to smash his earthenware. See how easily a potter can break the pots and jars he has made; with an iron rod, he smashes them all. Here the Psalm speaks of the human nature of Christ, because it says, “God and His Christ.” But farther on in the same Psalm, the verse now under discussion—

refers to the divine nature of Christ. And how does it express this? “The Lord said to Me”—that is, to Christ—“You are My Son; today I have begotten You.” What does this “today” mean? Saint Cyril interprets it for us: “This ‘today’ does not mean something recent, but something eternal.” It does not carry the meaning of recent time, but of eternity. That is what “eternal” means. It is truly remarkable, my beloved, when he goes on to say: “This ‘today’ is timeless, before all the ages.” Indeed, this passage is also quoted in the Epistle to the Hebrews: “Today I have begotten You.” “Today” means—

As we know, time as we experience it—that is, time within creation—has three divisions: what has passed, the past; what exists now, the present; and what is yet to come, the future. For God there is no such division of time, because God Himself exists simultaneously in the past, the future, and the present. Why simultaneously, you may wonder? Because all created things are immersed in time; they exist within the coordinates of time, so to speak. But God is beyond the coordinates of both space and time. And since God is beyond these coordinates of space and time, God does not exist—

today and tomorrow in the way we do. What exists for Him? One present—an incomprehensible present. It is in this sense that this incomprehensible present, this eternal present, is expressed in human language by the word “today.” This is why He says: “Today I have begotten You.” This is what is called the eternal generation of the Son—a generation of Him who truly has no beginning together with the Father, as Saint Cyril will explain a couple of paragraphs later. But he also offers another passage here to demonstrate the divine nature of Christ. It comes from Psalm 110.

This Psalm is thoroughly messianic. Indeed, the Lord Himself presented it to those who criticized Him: “Explain to Me,” He says, “what this means: ‘The Lord said to my Lord: Sit at My right hand until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet,’” and so forth. The Psalm also says: “From the womb, before the morning star, I begot You.” Pay attention to how much this short phrase contains. Let me give you a translation, not yet an interpretation: “From the womb, before the morning star”—that is, before that brilliant star, the Morning Star, Venus—“I begot You.”

What, then, does this mean? “Before the morning star” means before the material creation, both visible and invisible. A star, or the stars, serves as a representative image of creation—at least of visible creation. Holy Scripture, you see, always has its own manner of expression. The brightest star in the sky appears to be Venus, which is closer to the sun than the Earth is. Venus is slightly smaller than the Earth and belongs to the so-called inner planets, those between the sun and the Earth, while the Earth—

lies farther out, and the planets beyond it are among those called the outer planets. As you know, Venus never reaches the middle of the sky, because its orbit lies inside the Earth’s orbit. That is why it appears as the first and brightest star in the west, and as the first star in the east before sunrise—our familiar Morning Star. But it never reaches the middle of the sky, for the reason I have given: its orbit is an inner one. In apparent brightness, it is therefore classed as a star of the first magnitude. For this reason it is used as a representative image according to its appearance. Do not forget that Holy Scripture often uses language—

that is called… the so-called… Thank you. Forgive me: it describes phenomena according to how they appear. Do not forget this. Holy Scripture is not presenting a scientific account; it speaks of things in the ordinary way people perceive them. What is the brightest star in the sky? Obviously, to our eyes, it is Venus. From astronomy we know that Venus is not truly a star and that other stars are immense and formidable suns. But according to appearance, Venus is the brightest. So when the Psalm says, “before the morning star,” it means: “Before creation came into being, before the material and visible creation, I begot You.” Therefore, the Son exists before the material creation. And there is something else. As you know, one of the archangels—

bore the name Eosphoros. Do you know what Eosphoros means? It means the one who brings the dawn. That is the meaning of Eosphoros. Because the morning star appears in the morning and brings us the dawn, before the sun rises, it may be said to bring the dawn. My beloved, one of the archangels was called Eosphoros, just as there are Michael and Gabriel. We know this name, Eosphoros, from the Old Testament as the name of an archangel.

So now it says, “I begot You before the morning star.” We shall take this in both senses. For Lucifer, the fallen angel, belongs to the angelic order. Thus the meaning is: “I begot You before the material, visible world and before the invisible created world”—that is, before the angels.

It also says, “From the womb I begot You.” I would rather not analyze this now, because Saint Cyril devotes a special paragraph to it. But since we have come upon it here, I will say more now and less when we reach that paragraph, while the passage is still before us. My beloved, do not imagine that God has a womb or a belly, or that conception takes place in Him. There is no manner of generation in God like the manner of generation among us. There is nothing of the kind. This is simply a way of speaking. When we say, “My child, I gave birth to you”—let the child remain a child—“My child, I gave birth to you,” as a father or mother might say.

It is better to take the mother as the example, although in truth the father also begets. The mother says, “My child, I gave birth to you.” Do you understand what this means? It means that you are of my own essence. You are of my blood and my bones. Therefore, when God says, “From the womb I begot You,” it means, “You are of My essence,” without implying that God has a belly. Indeed, when He says, “I begot You,” the phrase “from the womb” is, interpretively speaking, almost a repetition, because to beget means that the one begotten is of the essence of the one who begets. Thus, “From the womb I begot You” means: “You are of My essence; You are consubstantial with Me.”

Let me now give the whole passage: “From the womb, before the morning star, I begot You.” In other words: “You, My Son, are of My essence, and You have always existed—as long as I, God the Father, have existed—before all visible and invisible creation.” This, my beloved, is who the Son is. It is astonishing. If only we truly knew who Jesus Christ is—if only we knew! Paragraph six: “Believe, therefore, in Jesus Christ, the Son of the living God.” Believe, then, in Jesus Christ, the Son of God,

of the living God, the Only-Begotten Son. For the Gospel says, “God so loved the world that He gave His Only-Begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.”

Again: “He who believes in the Son is not judged, but has passed from death into life. But he who disobeys the Son shall not see life; rather, the wrath of God abides upon him, because he has not believed in the name of the Only-Begotten Son of God.” Concerning Him, John bore witness, saying, “And we beheld His glory, glory as of the Only-Begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.” The demons, trembling before Him, cried out, “Leave us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus? What is there between us and You?” the demons said. “Son of the living God!” As you see, then, the whole paragraph is intended to tell us—having marshalled these passages from Holy Scripture which I have read to you—that the Son of God is the Only-Begotten: the Only-Begotten Son of God. What does “Only-Begotten” mean? There is no other Son; He has no brother. There is one Son of God, one and only one. If I were to analyze one by one all these passages from the New Testament that Saint Cyril brings forward, my beloved... Here, indeed, he says:

“He who believes in the Son is not judged.” The one who believes in the Son, he says, is not judged or condemned, but has passed from death into life. The one who disobeys the Son shall not see life; the wrath of God abides upon him. But why? Because the Son is consubstantial with the Father. The Evangelist John also says, “And we beheld His glory, glory as of the Only-Begotten from the Father.” Forgive me—is it John who says this, or is it also mentioned by the Apostle Peter when he speaks of the Transfiguration of Christ in his first epistle? All these things show us, my beloved, that the Son of God is indeed the Only-Begotten Son. And now we proceed to the seventh paragraph.

“He is the Son of God by nature and not by adoption, begotten of the Father.” He is, therefore, the Son of God not by adoption but by nature—that is, He is the natural Son. In the same way, if I beget a child, that child is my natural child. If I adopt a child, that child is not mine by nature, but by adoption. “And he who loves the One who begot also loves the One begotten of Him.” The one who loves the Begetter, the Father, also loves the One begotten of Him, Jesus Christ. “But he who rejects the One begotten”—the one who rejects the One begotten, namely Christ—directs the insult back toward the One who begot Him; he sends the insult and the blasphemy

against God the Father, who begot Him. Here I would like to tell you something extremely important—something into which the Jews have fallen, and into which, unfortunately, we too fall. It is this: no one can ever offer true worship to God while denying one of these two Persons. I am not speaking here of the Holy Spirit, for then we would say all three. But because our subject is the Son, we are not now referring to the Holy Spirit. Saint Cyril will speak much later about the Holy Spirit, somewhere around the sixteenth catechesis, I believe—I do not quite remember. So when I speak of the two Persons, I do so for what we might call practical reasons connected with our present subject.

The one who denies the Father also denies the Son. The one who denies the Son also denies the Father. And so we have the following: it is well known that the Jews denied the Son. Christ said plainly, as the Evangelist John records, that if you do not receive the Son, neither do you receive the Father. Consequently, you are atheists. What a fearful thing! In truth, God is one.

This is a Mystery, yet people have wanted to comprehend it. All those heretics who opposed the Holy Trinity tried to grasp the dogma intellectually and explain it by human logic. But dogma cannot be explained by human logic. It is a supernatural truth, beyond our grasp. How can God be three Persons and yet one God? In their attempt to smooth away this stumbling block to human reason, they fell into what I have called the Trinitarian heresies. These heresies still exist today. They are not merely ancient relics kept in a museum. They remain among us. Sadly, Trinitarian heresy abounds especially in the Protestant world. It abounds. But unfortunately, even among us who call ourselves Orthodox Christians, we too often fall into this error.

Do not forget that the iconoclastic heresy, at its root, arose because this controversy came from the Arabs. Do not forget that. Even today there are people who, supposedly wishing to safeguard the oneness of God, deny Jesus Christ. The Millenarians fall into the same heresy, for they deny the Son. Thus, whoever denies the Son denies the Father. It is perfectly clear. Consequently, such a person is an atheist. Something fearful in our own time, as I have told you, and found among our Christians, is this: today there is a tendency to deny the Old Testament. Saint Cyril will, of course, speak about this, for there is nothing new under the sun.

There were people who said that the God of the Old Testament was one God and the God of the New Testament another. What can I say to you? What can I say? Again and again, my beloved, books, papers by educators, and all kinds of other writings come into my hands attacking the Old Testament. You cannot imagine what names they call God! In one recent example—perhaps I should mention the author—there is a journalist named Fourakis, who wrote against Zionism. That is well enough, but what does he do? He has written several anti-Zionist books. If you like, that is a good thing—very good indeed. But he has fallen into the following error. Have you heard that proverb from Karagiozis:

“The eye hurts, so he takes out the eye. The head hurts, so he cuts off the head”? Very well, then. In order to strike at Zionism, he strikes at the Old Testament. What does Zionism have to do with the Old Testament? What relation is there between them? Without realizing it, these people cut the feet out from under Christianity, so to speak. Where, then, is the Old Testament? For how shall we know who Jesus Christ is unless we go to the Old Testament? Without the prophecies of the Old Testament, the question remains unanswered: “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?” And the God of the Old Testament is the God of the New Testament. They speak of “sweetest Jesus,” if I may use that expression, because this is how they put it,

and they say that “sweetest Jesus” has no connection whatsoever with the vengeful God of the Old Testament. In that book—what can I tell you? The epithets it uses! May God forgive me even for repeating them. It calls God a murderer and even a usurer—do not ask me why it calls Him a usurer—as well as vengeful, jealous, and so forth. Wretched people! One could answer them: the One who spoke in the Old Testament is the One who became man. It is not the Father who speaks, but the Son. He is the Angel of Great Counsel. He is Yahweh, the Lord. Yes.

What a grave error we make when the Old Testament is attacked in every possible way. I fear that beneath it all—beyond the ignorance of people who may have been led astray—there may be a deliberate plan. They cannot attack the New Testament directly. How could they openly attack Christ among our Christians, and especially among our Greek people? It would not be accepted, because He is an established and revered figure. So they attack the Old Testament as though it were merely a Jewish product or simply the history of the Jews. Once the Old Testament has been pushed aside, it will of course be easy to destroy the New Testament as well. For once we cut the root of the tree, it is not difficult to make the tree wither. There can be no question about it.

These are the errors being made, my beloved. I warn you so that you may recognize them. Many things are circulating in our time. Allow me to use a popular expression: all the devils in the world have been marshalled against God and His Christ, to speak in the language of the Second Psalm. “When you hear of God begetting, do not descend in your thoughts to bodily things, nor suppose a corruptible generation, lest you fall into impiety.” Take care, he says; this is what I told you earlier. Saint Cyril will say it a little further on. When you hear that God begets, do not fall into the impiety of imagining that God can beget as human beings do.

In God, generation is spiritual. “For bodies beget bodies, and time intervenes in the generation of bodily beings.” Bodies beget bodies. And notice here something that reveals the foolishness of the Millenarians. When one body begets another, he says, time intervenes—that is, time comes between them. “But between the Father and the generation of the Son there is no interval of time.” Among human beings, between a father who begets and the son he begets, time intervenes. The father exists first, and afterward the son exists.

But this, he says, does not apply to God. Do you know what the Millenarians say? These people are not merely distorters of truth—what shall I call them? They are demonically deluded and utterly shallow. They have no depth at all in their understanding of Holy Scripture, and this is deliberate. For do not forget that Millenarianism is a fabrication.

It is a religion, certainly. If we had to consider it from a legal standpoint, it is a religion; that is not the issue. But Millenarianism is a fabrication, intended to destroy Christianity. Russell himself said it—was that his name? Russell, forgive me—in 1906, in a large...

At a large stadium somewhere in the United States—I do not remember which city—he said that Millennialism would cause the tree of Christianity to wither. These things, then, are fabrications, inventions of the Antichrist intended to attack Christianity and the Church. What do they say? They laugh when we tell them that the Son is without beginning together with the Father. They say, “How can you understand such a thing? Take a human being, for example. Can a father ever be the same age as his son? Therefore, the Son came after the Father. Does not Christ Himself say that He is the Son of the Father? Then He must be later than the Father.” And if He is later, there must be an interval of time between them.

Now, if there is an interval of time, you will immediately recognize the heresy of Arius: “There was a time when He was not.” That is what Arius said: “There was a time when He was not.” But if something is lacking from the existence of God, then that being is no longer utterly simple and is not God. This is why the Millennialists do not believe in Christ’s divine nature—that He is God. Notice what Saint Cyril says: “There is no interval of time in the generation of the Son from the Father.” There is no intervening period, no temporal difference between the Son’s generation and the Father. Where does the error lie? They understand this generation according to human patterns. But we can never understand the generation of Christ, the Son and Word (Logos) of God, according to human patterns. The word “beget” means only that this Person is from the essence of the Father. We shall see this again later, when Saint Cyril explains it in detail. “Among men, that which is begotten is born imperfect, but the Son of God was begotten perfect.” In human generation, a son is born imperfect. Not only is he separated from his father by time, but he is also born imperfect, not yet a fully developed man. But the Son of God is not separated from the Father by time.

He is not separated from the Father by time, and He is also perfect. There was never a moment when anyone could say, “God the Word must grow and attain the perfection of the Father.” “For what He is now, He was also from the beginning, having been eternally begotten,” and so forth. I shall leave a little of the seventh catechesis aside here, because I am afraid that so much material may tire you. But hold fast to these most precious truths. Christology has many aspects. Saint Cyril was deeply concerned that his catechumens should learn them. And you too, I beg you, retain as much as you can. Paragraph eight: “Do not suppose that His generation is human, nor that it was like Abraham’s begetting of Isaac. For Abraham begot Isaac.”

“He begot him, but he did not beget the son he desired by his own power; rather, he begot the son whom Another granted him. But when God the Father begets, there is neither ignorance nor deliberation involved. To say that He did not know whom He was begetting is the greatest impiety; and to say that, after deliberating for a time, He later became Father is the same impiety.” God does not beget, Saint Cyril says, as Abraham begot Isaac. After all, when Abraham begot Isaac...

Well...

Abraham did not decide when he would have him; and, if you will, Isaac was granted to Abraham, for we know that Abraham was one hundred years old and Sarah was ninety. Sarah was already very advanced in age. God granted Abraham his child, Isaac. But here, Saint Cyril says, the Son of God is not granted to the Father by another.

Furthermore, Abraham did not know whether he, as a father, would be able to have a son. He knew that he was unable to beget children. But God is not ignorant. Take care, Saint Cyril says: it is the greatest impiety to claim that God did not know that He would beget the Son, or that afterward, “having deliberated for a time, He later became Father”—as though some time passed, He considered the matter, and only then became the Father. How could these things have unfolded in such a way? That is impiety, simply because the Son is without beginning together with the Father. “But He always had the Son, always begetting Him—not as men beget men.”

Not as men beget men, “but as He alone knows, as it is written: He who begot Him before all ages, true God.” Before all ages—before space and time themselves. Paragraph nine: “For the Father, being true God, begot the Son like Himself, true God.” Like Himself: the essence of the Father is the essence of the Son. “Not as teachers beget fellow disciples.” I shall omit a few lines. “Through discipleship he became a son. But there He is the natural Son, the true Son—not as you who are now being illumined become sons of God.” Paul says that he begot them through the Gospel.

Teachers, too, beget disciples. “I begot you,” Paul says. But how did Paul beget them? He begot the faithful through the Gospel. What does that mean? Did they come forth from his essence? Did the disciples come from Paul’s essence? No. The expression is metaphorical. Take care: it is a metaphor. Saint Cyril then says, “And we are born of water and the Spirit.” We are born from the baptismal font.

I was born. The baptismal font is a second womb, as you know. It is a womb, a place of birth. I was born naturally from my mother’s womb, and by grace I was born again from the second womb, which is called the baptismal font—Christian Baptism. “And we are born of water and the Spirit,” says Saint Cyril. “Was Christ, then, begotten from the Father in this way?” No, the Son was not begotten from the Father in this way either. “For at the time of Baptism, when He addressed Him and said, ‘This is My Son,’ He did not say, ‘This has now become My Son.’”

The words “This is My Son” declare that He was already the Son before the act of Baptism. Forgive me; the sentence should read: “And that even before the act of Baptism, He was the Son.” In other words, when the Father speaks at Christ’s Baptism, take care: He says, “This is My beloved Son.” Do not imagine that He becomes the Son at Baptism, for such a heresy exists. The Millennialists do not teach this, but others do: they claim that Jesus Christ became the Son of God when He was baptized. Do not say that, as though He were not the Son before Baptism. For, as Saint Cyril very perceptively observes...

He did not say, “This has now become My Son,” meaning, “He has now become My child,” but rather, “This is My Son; this is My child.” He does not become the Son at the moment of His Baptism. Why? Because He was the Son even before the act of Baptism. Paragraph ten: “The Father begot the Son, not as the nous in man begets a word.” Pay close attention to this paragraph. “For the nous within us possesses hypostasis, but the spoken word is dispersed into the air and perishes.” We do not understand Christ as a spoken word that has been produced. He is the living Word who possesses hypostasis—not uttered by lips and dispersed, but eternally and ineffably begotten from the Father in hypostasis. “For in the beginning was the Word.”

Seated at the right hand, the Word understands the Father’s will and creates all things at His command.

During the questions, I mentioned that majestic saying with which Holy Scripture begins: “And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.” I told you that the word “said” expresses a word: God spoke, and light came into being. But since it expresses a word, God creates the light through His Word (Logos). There is a passage in the Psalms which says, “By the Word of the Lord the heavens were established.” Through the Word of the Lord, the heavens received their existence and were made firm. The phrase is “by the Word.” What, then, was Saint Cyril saying here? When you hear the word “Word”...

Take note, because the Son is also called the Word. He is called both the Son and the Word of God. These are two names. The Evangelist John begins his Gospel in this way: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Thus, he is speaking about the Word. The Word is the second Person of the Holy Trinity. When you hear “the Word,” do not imagine that the Father is the nous and the Son is the word produced by it, as happens within us. For, as we know, people have often attempted to offer an image of the Holy Trinity. Here you will see that Saint Cyril is constantly trying to show, both in the paragraphs that follow and in those that came before, that within the Godhead there is no mechanical analogy, no analogy drawn from heat...

No chemical analogy, no biological analogy, and no social analogy. Whatever comparison you offer, the image cannot correspond to the reality. No such analogy exists. For a moment we may use one, because the Fathers of our Church also do so, but they warn us: it is only an image, and it remains far removed from the reality. The nous begets the word. The nous, Saint Cyril says, possesses hypostasis—that is, it belongs to the person, to the person himself. For I think with my nous. And I believe you all know that the person, in the theological sense, is certainly not my nose and eyes; the person is my soul, my nous. The nous begets the word. Very well: I think, and I speak.

What is this word of mine that has been produced? It consists of words. To use a modern expression, it is sound striking the particles of the air; these in turn strike the listeners’ eardrums, and the listeners receive an image of what I am saying—certain concepts. This is how Saint Cyril puts it: “For the nous within us possesses hypostasis.” The nous belongs to the person. “But the spoken word is dispersed into the air and perishes.” Once dispersed into the air, it vanishes. The word is gone. Do not imagine, he says, that the Word of God is like this—a word such as the one that comes from our mouths.

Do not imagine such a thing. He is not a spoken word, but the Word who possesses hypostasis. Speaking in human terms, we would say that my nous possesses hypostasis: it is personal; it belongs to a person. But is my word a person? If it were, I would be making two persons. How, then, could I speak of such a thing? In God, however, if I call the Father the nous, the nous is a Person, and His Word is also a Person. This is very important. “Not uttered by lips and dispersed, but eternally and ineffably from the Father.” He is not something dispersed through space, but is eternally and ineffably from the Father—“begotten in hypostasis.” He was begotten as...

A Person. The Word of God is a Person. This is why it says, “For in the beginning was the Word.” What is this beginning? It means “in the beginning,” when the foundation of creation was laid. You know, when we use the word “beginning,” it implies time. We all understand this. When we say, “I begin,” we mean that something starts in time; the concept of time is immediately present. How does the Book of Genesis begin? “In the beginning God made heaven and earth.” How does the Gospel according to John begin? “In the beginning was the Word.” What is this beginning? It is time. “In the beginning God made heaven and earth.” That is, He made heaven and earth within the beginning—take care—within time. In other words, at the same moment He made...

At the same moment—I emphasize this, although the subject extends further—He made space, for “heaven” means space. “In the beginning” means within the beginning, that is, within time. Time did not exist before creation; space and time came into being together. We know very well that time cannot be conceived without space, just as space cannot be measured without time. We know this because the concept of time, the so-called fourth dimension, is given only through the presence of space, or through changes occurring within space, if we may put it that way. This is how we can measure time and have a sense of it. Space and time are therefore bound together. There cannot be... You see, creation without time is nothing; it does not exist.

Time as something abstract does not exist. And so here, when it says, “In the beginning was the Word,” it means that when the creation had its beginning, the Word already was. “Was” is the imperfect tense of the verb “to be.” Ah, how much we need blessed Ancient Greek! Most blessed Ancient Greek! For these treasures were written in our language—at least the New Testament, if you will, and the whole body of Patristic writings were written originally in it—and we are selling them for a bowl of lentils. We are giving away these priceless treasures of our language for a bowl of lentils.

Wake up, beloved, wake up, beloved, and understand certain things. Do you understand what I mean? We are selling what is priceless. And so, when creation comes into being, “In the beginning was the Word.” The Word already existed. “And the Word was with God.” He was with God. “And the Word was God.” How can something without hypostasis be God? Without hypostasis means without person. Or, to use a modern expression, it means having no real existence. “The Word was God; the Word was God.” What does this mean, my beloved? It means that the Word is a person and has nothing whatsoever to do with what we call the spoken word, which disperses among the particles of the air.

“The Word, who knows the will of the Father and creates all things at His command; the Word who descended and ascended—for a spoken word neither descends nor ascends; the Word who speaks and says, ‘The things I have seen with My Father, these I speak’; the Word who possesses authority and reigns over all, for the Father has delivered all things to the Son.” Indeed. The Word, he says—Jesus Christ—is the One who descended and ascended, the One who came down to earth and ascended again into heaven. But a spoken word neither ascends nor descends. He is the Word who speaks and says, “What I have seen with My Father, that is what I have come to tell you.”

The Word is a person; He has hypostasis. He is the Word who exercises authority, the Word who reigns over all. Why? Because it says, “For the Father has delivered all things to the Son”—because the Father has entrusted everything to the Son. Therefore, He is the Word who has hypostasis, not a spoken word. All these, of course, are aspects that bring us nearer to the mystery of God the Word. At the same time, the more we know and the more we learn, as you will come to understand, the more God will remain unknown to us. Then we will be able to say: Who can speak of God? “Who shall declare His generation?” Who can recount and tell us who God is? And then...

Those who blaspheme will no longer blaspheme, because they will realize that they are blaspheming a sacred person, a sacred name. It will be unthinkable. The devout will become still more devout. And one more thing, if you will, as I bring this paragraph to a close: these things may seem difficult to you. Yet Saint Cyril taught them to his catechumens. Surely we cannot say that we are less educated than the people who lived around the year 350 after Christ. So do not tell me, “We do not understand,” because the subject is very profound. This was the content of catechesis. And so, to our honor, this same catechesis is offered to us today, and we must receive it without complaint, however difficult it may seem.
