Summary

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem’s eleventh catechesis presents Jesus Christ as the eternally begotten, true God and Creator through whom all things were made. Peter’s confession identifies Jesus as the unique Messiah and Son of the living God, a truth revealed by the heavenly Father rather than discovered by human reasoning. Deep knowledge of Christ’s divine-human person strengthens faith, grounds moral life, and prepares believers to resist false christs and the Antichrist.

My dear friends, we have reached the eleventh catechesis of Saint Cyril, Bishop of Jerusalem. The title of this catechesis is: “Delivered orally to those preparing for illumination in Jerusalem, on the words: ‘And in the Only-Begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father, true God before all ages, through whom all things were made.’” As you can tell from its title, the catechesis continues with the many articles in the Creed that refer to the person of Jesus Christ, for He is the central person of our confession of faith. Here, however, He is described as the Son of God, the Only-Begotten Son of God.

He is begotten of the Father. He is true God, begotten before all ages—that is, before creation—and He is the Creator of all things, for it says, “through whom all things were made.” Of course, we touched briefly on this subject in the previous catechesis, as well as in those summary statements Saint Cyril gave concerning all his catecheses, and so we have already gained a general picture. But bear in mind, as I told you, that the person of our Holy Lord Jesus Christ is central—absolutely central. And He is central not merely to our lives, nor even merely to history.

He is central to the whole of creation, visible and invisible—to the entire universe, both the visible world and the angelic realms. When the Apostle Paul writes that at the name of Jesus Christ “every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,” you understand that He truly is the central person. Therefore, especially in our own age, when the person of Jesus Christ is under attack, we cannot imagine that our knowledge is sufficient if we have learned only a handful of things about Him.

The knowledge we can acquire of the person of Jesus Christ is inexhaustible, and the more firmly grounded we are in that knowledge, the more our faith will grow. I asked a young man in his final year of high school, “What do you believe about Jesus Christ?” He told me, “He is love.” I replied, “Love is an attribute. You cannot simply say that Jesus Christ is love.” This too is one of the slogans of our age. We speak continually about love. But love, as an attribute, must flow from a person. And the person of Christ is the divine-human person. That is the center and the foundation. Love flows from this person. Love. We therefore cannot merely say that Christ is love.

Otherwise, we may understand Christ in all sorts of ways. We could say of other people in history as well that they were people of love. From this alone, you can see that we need to be firmly grounded in dogma. The sermons of our age are moralistic sermons, and we have paid a very high price for this. Florovsky addresses priests and pleads with them, saying twice: “Preach the dogmas.” He says this precisely because dogma was pushed aside as teaching. Where was it pushed aside? In the Church, in the preaching of the Church, and in its place there prevailed

only the moral aspect of the Gospel. That is why we have reached this sorry state, where we wonder who Jesus Christ is and how we should understand His person. This is an age confused about the person of Jesus Christ—not about what Christ said or what Christ showed us. We keep talking about love and more love. It is very fashionable. We speak of peace and more peace. My dear friends, if you will allow me to put it this way, it is neither love nor peace in itself that concerns us, but the person of Jesus Christ. And if we possess the person of Jesus Christ, then we shall also have peace and love; indeed, we shall have genuine peace and genuine love.

What must concern us is the divine-human person of Jesus Christ. He is the criterion of all things, visible and invisible—of everything. For this reason, even the angels will be judged in relation to the divine-human person of Christ. The angels, you know, believed in the divine-human person of Christ. They believed. They too, therefore, will be judged, but because they believed, they will not be condemned. That is, they have already been tested. This is why they spoke to God when they beheld the Incarnation of God the Word (Logos). In other words, the angelic world believed. This is, of course, an exceedingly great and immense matter. As I have told you, He is the criterion of all things. So please do not complain that I am repeating myself—for I confess that I too found some difficulty as I read the eleventh catechesis,

since I would have to tell you the same things again. So do not tell me that I am repeating myself. Saint Cyril insists on these points, but you will understand that when he insists and returns to them, he does so first of all to present the many aspects of the same subject. You will see this. There are many aspects. Furthermore, his guide is the Creed. He will tell us one set of things about Christ being Only-Begotten, another about His being the Creator of all things, and so forth. These are the various aspects concerning the person of Jesus Christ. But there is something else as well. Saint Cyril understood that he was not delivering rhetorical speeches; he was giving lessons. He was doing exactly what the book’s title says: offering catechesis, so that his catechumens might thoroughly learn the content of the faith.

They were going to be baptized, and they had to know who Jesus Christ is. Should we, then, require anything less for ourselves—or perhaps something more? We too are all disciples, myself first and then you, learning in the school of the knowledge of the person of Jesus Christ. We must learn who He is, so that we are not carried about in every direction and our faith is not shaken. For if today, so to speak, the vessel of morality and practical life is being tossed about, it is because the vessel of faith is being tossed about. Morality flows from faith. Today the vessel of faith is being shaken violently, and precisely because there is this wavering,

this doubt and unbelief, we then say, “Who cares? Let us eat, drink, and enjoy whatever life we can.” And then morality too—His Highness Morality, on which we have placed so much weight while allowing faith to grow weak—also goes by the wayside. Faith, therefore, must be strengthened. And I believe—without suggesting, of course, that we disregard morality; do not take it that way, because that would be a misunderstanding—that the closer we draw to the Last Things (eschata), the more we must emphasize faith, and especially faith in the divine-human person of Jesus Christ. The Antichrist will have a great adversary to oppose: the divine-human person of Christ. What is the Antichrist? His very name tells us: the Antichrist.

The Antichrist will be the great opponent of the divine-human person of Christ. How shall we withstand the Antichrist? How shall we endure if we do not possess a deep knowledge of the divine-human person of Christ? So much, my dear friends, by way of a brief introduction, to explain why we insist upon these things, just as Saint Cyril insisted upon them with the catechumens of his own day. Paragraph one.

“That we place our hope in Jesus Christ, we have said many things—enough, according to our ability—among those teachings delivered to you yesterday.” He says that yesterday they had taught at sufficient length those things which had been handed down to them as a lesson concerning our hope in Jesus Christ. “But we must not simply believe in Christ Jesus, nor accept Him as one of the many who are improperly called christs. For they were christs in a typological sense, but this is the true Christ. He did not rise from among men and advance into the priesthood, but eternally possesses the dignity of the priesthood from the Father. And for this reason, safeguarding us beforehand lest we suppose Him to be one of the mere christs, the faith adds to its confession that we believe ‘in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only-Begotten Son of God.’” In this paragraph, he wishes to tell us that there is a distinction between the many christs—the plural form—

the christs of history, and the one Christ. These christs who existed—meaning those in the Old Testament—were typological christs, as he says here. If I may use such a term, they were types of Christ. We have many of them. Some were anointed in connection with the priesthood, others in connection with kingship, and still others, if you will, in being raised to the prophetic gift. In one prophecy, what does God say to the Prophet Elijah? He tells him, “Go from Mount Horeb,” where Elijah had received visions,

a vision of God, “and go anoint Elisha as prophet.” All these, then, are christs, meaning those who are anointed—from the verb “to anoint.” Anointings were usually performed with oil, the oil of anointing, or else by the laying on of hands, just as we have today in the priesthood. Every priest is a christ of the Lord, an anointed one of the Lord. Of course, today in the priesthood of the New Testament we do not use the anointing oil of the Old Testament; instead, we have the laying on of hands, which is itself an anointing.

It is the setting apart of a person for a particular purpose, plan, or will of God, and so forth. Thus, he says, we have many christs. But do not reckon Jesus Christ as one of the many christs of the Old Testament. No. “But this is the true Christ,” and He “eternally possesses the dignity of the priesthood from the Father.” He possesses it always and forever; it is never taken away from Him. And He possesses the dignity of Christ from the Father Himself. Therefore, Jesus Christ is the one and only Christ. Thank you.

The other christs were types, as Saint Cyril says here, of this one and only Christ. Did Christ Himself not say that many false christs, false messiahs, would appear? He Himself says, “They will tell you, ‘Here is Christ,’ or ‘There is Christ.’” All of these are either self-appointed christs or were appointed by other people, but they were not ordained by God. Or, if we speak of christs appointed by God—as I said, those in the Old Testament—they are all types of the one true Christ. The others are christs falsely so called—that is, false christs, impostors. They are not true christs. This is why the Lord says that when they tell you, “Behold, Christ is here,” or “Behold, Christ is there,”

you must not listen to them. There is a charming story from the Fathers, or rather from the ascetic tradition. Once the devil appeared to a monk, an ascetic, and said to him, as it were, “Akakios, I am Christ; worship me.” The monk replied, “Christ told us, ‘They will say to you, “Christ is here,” or “Christ is there”; do not believe them.’” And he vanished at once, my dear friends. This “Christ” who had appeared to him was the devil—the devil. Paragraph two. “Again, when you hear ‘Son,’ do not suppose that He is a son by adoption, but the natural Son.”

“Only-Begotten, having no brother; for this reason He is called Only-Begotten, because in the dignity of His divinity and in His begetting from the Father, He has no brother. We call Him the Son of God, not on our own authority, but because the Father Himself named Christ His Son; and the name given by fathers to their children is a true designation.” He goes on to tell us in the second paragraph that when we hear He is the Son, we must not imagine that He is a son by adoption, but understand that He is the natural Son. As I told you when we gave our summary concerning Jesus Christ,

and as we say again here, Jesus Christ is not Son by designation or adoption, but Son by nature. Everything else that God might call a son is adopted, a son by designation. We ourselves, for example—notice that I said “might call.” A little further on, in the fourth paragraph, he says—and I am getting ahead of myself—God says, “I said, ‘You are gods.’” I said. Yes, Saint Cyril rightly points out that He said, “I said”; He did not say, “I begot.” I said. Consequently, you can see here that

we occupy the place of adopted children. A human being is called a son—or even a god, as we shall see further on—by grace. God wills to call us His children and to be called our Father. This does not mean that we are children of God by God’s own nature. Jesus Christ, however, was not called Son because He had pleased the Father; He is Son by nature, meaning that He is from the essence of the Father. Furthermore, Saint Cyril says, it is not we who call Him Son, but the Father Himself. And recognition takes place when the father himself bestows the designation of fatherhood upon his child.

A father himself acknowledges his child as his own. Since, then, the Father Himself calls Jesus His Son, He is indeed the Son of God and truly the Only-Begotten. We shall look more closely at the word “Only-Begotten” in a moment. He has no brothers, Saint Cyril says, no brothers. We may say that we are children of God and brothers and sisters to one another. But Jesus Christ has no brothers. Saint Cyril means this with respect to His divine nature—for that is what we are speaking about—because in His human nature Jesus Christ has many brethren. In His human nature, He is “the firstborn among many brethren.” But in His divine nature, He is the Only-Begotten. He has no brother. There is one Son of God. Paragraph three.

“Many did not know that our Lord Jesus Christ had become man. Wishing, therefore, to teach them what they did not know, He gathered His disciples and asked them, ‘Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?’” When the Son of God became man, people did not understand what had taken place. So Jesus Christ, wishing to teach them, gathered His disciples and asked, “What do people say about Me? Who am I?” This is found in Matthew 16:13, and it is a most important passage. “He did not ask out of vainglory, but because He wished to reveal the truth about Himself.” The Lord did not ask because He wanted them to flatter Him by saying who He was.

He wished precisely to reveal who He is, “lest, while dwelling with God, the Only-Begotten of God, they should despise Him as a mere man.” They were living with the Son of God, yet they might regard Him as nothing more than a mere, ordinary man—a man stripped, as it were, of divinity. “And when they answered that some said Elijah and others Jeremiah,” He spoke to them. They told Him that people were saying, “Some say that You are Elijah,” meaning that Elijah had returned to earth, “or Jeremiah,” perhaps risen from the dead, “or one of the prophets, or someone of that kind.” Then He said to them, “Those who do not know may be forgiven.”

Those who do not know may be forgiven. “But you, the Apostles, who cleanse lepers in My honored name, cast out demons, and raise the dead, ought not to be ignorant of Him through whom you perform these wonders.” You ought not to remain ignorant when you work so many miracles in My name. Then everyone fell silent. But the Apostle Peter, the foremost of the Apostles and chief herald of the Church, did not arrive at his confession through clever invention or human reasoning. Enlightened by the heavenly Father, he said to Him: “You are the Christ—not merely a christ, but the Son of the living God.” That is: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

Matthew preserves these words for us in Matthew 16:16. A blessing then follows: What you have said did not come from you; it was not your own discovery, for this truth is beyond human powers. My heavenly Father revealed it to you. And so the Savior says to him: “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood”—that is, a human being—“has not revealed this to you, but My Father in heaven.” Therefore, everyone who knows our Lord Jesus Christ shares in this blessedness. But whoever denies Him is wretched indeed. This is a precious paragraph, my dear friends. Listen carefully.

Indeed, within the New Testament there is a question posed by Jesus Christ Himself: “What do people say about Me? Who am I?” This question will be asked throughout every century and in every age. It is a question that will remain unanswered—take note, unanswered. Who is this Jesus of Nazareth? Who is He? This is the great question. He is the most mysterious person in history, the most obscure as regards His origin—who He is and what He is—and as regards His purpose and mission. And yet, for those who believe, this most mysterious and seemingly obscure person is the most radiant and clearly revealed, insofar as such knowledge is possible. The question “Who is Jesus Christ?” will always remain unanswered for those who do not have the Spirit of God. But whenever any person, in any age, gives the answer of the Apostle Peter—“You are the Christ, the Son of the living God”—that person, Saint Cyril assures us,

shares in the blessedness proclaimed by Christ: “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah.” Bar means “son,” and so the name means “son of Jonah.” “For this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood”—a Hebrew expression—“but by My Father.” Whenever anyone is able to answer who Jesus Christ is, this too is a revelation from God to that believer. Please do not forget this, whatever age a believer may live in. I shall insist strongly upon this point. Can people answer that question today? No. As I said, it is an eternal question. Why does the Father not reveal it to them? Why not? They are not worthy to receive the revelation. Yet the matter is not in doubt. It has been revealed

who Jesus Christ is. But this was not revealed to the rulers of the Jews, though they were renowned and learned theologians; even to this day it has not been revealed to them. In order to leave them without excuse before history and at the Judgment, the Lord answered when Caiaphas asked Him, “Who are You? Tell us who You are.” In the name of the true God, Caiaphas was obliged to examine every theological question that arose, assisted, of course, by the council. “I adjure You in the name of the Blessed One, in the name of God.” Do you hear? “I adjure You”—that is, I place You under oath to tell us who You are. Are You the Son of God? Who are You? And the Lord answered. He answered with a prophecy, the prophecy of Daniel. He did not simply say, “Yes,” and leave it at that; He used a prophecy. Why? Because the prophecies were familiar ground to the teachers of the Law, the priests, and the chief priests. No one could then say, “I am scandalized because You are telling me things that are not written in Holy Scripture.” What do we say today when a heretic introduces some novelty? “Where is that written in Holy Scripture? Where is it written?” So the Lord anticipates this objection and says:

“It is written about Me in Holy Scripture, in the Old Testament. It is found in Daniel’s vision and prophecy: You will see the Son of Man coming upon the clouds of heaven,” and so forth. You see, then, my dear friends, that the Lord answers the question of who He is. Did Caiaphas accept His answer? No. His heart was hardened because he saw everything shortsightedly and through the lens of self-interest. In what way? A few days earlier he had said, “It is expedient that one man should die for the people”—in other words, so that we may avoid trouble with the Romans. Do you see? He was acting from self-interest. He thought, “Am I to lose my position?” The poor man! History tells us that Caiaphas held the office of high priest for only one more year.

He wanted to hold on to his position, to his seat of power. Ah, that seat, that throne, that office! Yet he lost it. And what does he do here? He betrays true theology. What a terrible thing! What does the poor man do? He tears his garments and, with the greatest theatrical display, says to the council, “You have heard the blasphemy He has spoken!” But were you not the one who asked Him? Did you not place Him under oath? He was bound to tell you the truth under oath. Why, then, do you tear your garments? Investigate the matter. You also have the testimony of the people: three years of miracle upon miracle, His teaching, and the holiness of His life. Why rush so quickly to condemn Him? Passion blinds a person.

Caiaphas did not accept the prophecy, even though he was high priest. Saint John the Evangelist tells us that Caiaphas said, as high priest that year, that it was expedient for one man to die for the people. But he understood nothing beyond that. He was blinded. God the Father did not reveal the truth to him. Therefore, my dear friends, the confession of the Apostle Peter was of immense significance, as Christ Himself affirmed. Consider the answer Peter gave to Jesus Christ on behalf of his fellow disciples. It is well worth our time to examine the Apostle Peter’s answer more closely.

When he says, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God,” he means:

“You are”—that is, this very person standing before me, not some other person, but the person who is now questioning me and to whom I am replying. This person is the Christ, the Messiah, the One who comes into the world with a particular mission. He is the Angel of Great Counsel, the One sent to save the world, for the will of the Father was the salvation of mankind. “You are the Christ.” Peter does not say merely, “You are Christ,” but “You are the Christ,” using the definite article.

The article means that He is the particular, the one, unique, and unrepeatable Messiah. There is no other besides You. It is as though Peter were saying: There were many christs in the Old Testament, but You alone are the one and only Christ. There is no other. “The Son of God.” Of which God? “Of the living God.” The living God—not some god fashioned by the imagination, but the God who lives. And if God is living, if He possesses life in Himself, then there cannot be a second, a third, or a tenth God. There is only one. You, then, are the Son of this one living God. But if You are the Son, I must distinguish You from those human beings whom God also calls sons. That is why I do not say, “You are a son of God,” but, again with the definite article, “You are the Son of God”—the one, unique, and unrepeatable Son of God. The precision of Holy Scripture is striking. Once, near the beginning of the disciples’ mission to go out and preach to the world, the Lord and His disciples were crossing the Lake of Gennesaret. The Lord was asleep.

A terrible storm arose, yet the Lord continued to sleep. The disciples became frightened. There were others in the boat as well, not only the disciples. Fearing that they would drown, they woke the Lord and cried, “Lord, Master, we are perishing! We are drowning!” The Lord arose, looked upon the sea and the wind, and spoke one word to the wind: “Be silent; be muzzled.” In other words: Shut your mouth, stop blowing, be muzzled. He does not merely say, “Stop blowing.” It is a powerful expression: “Be silent; be muzzled.” The Creator is revealed. He puts a muzzle on the wind. How? With a single word. Immediately, a wondrous calm fell upon the lake. Then the people and the disciples said, “Truly, this is a son of God.” Listen carefully to what they said: “Truly, he is a son of God.” They did not say, “Truly, this is the Son of God.” They spoke without the definite article: simply “a son of God,” meaning a person who enjoys God’s favor. They had not yet recognized Him as God. Their understanding still had farther to go. Likewise, when the centurion at the Cross saw what had taken place, he said, “Truly,

this man was a son of God.” Do you see? He does not say, “the Son of God.” He is expressing wonder that this person is someone extraordinary. Today, sadly and even blasphemously, we hear the same thing from Christians who say that Jesus Christ is an extraordinary person, a superior human being. Even if they speak with respect, they are no different from the disciples’ first thoughts and confessions, or from the centurion who took part in the Crucifixion of Christ. However noble their souls may have been, and whatever they said and confessed, at its root such a statement is unbelief. For them it was not unbelief, because they did not yet know. But can we, who have been baptized into the name

of the one, particular, and Only-Begotten Son of God, be permitted to say that He is merely a great, superhuman person? This, then, is the confession of the Apostle Peter: “You are the Son of God”—the one, the unique, the particular One; the One standing before me; the One who became man. For the title “Christ” also implies the Incarnation. It is as though Peter were saying to Him: “You are the God-Man, Jesus Christ, the Only-Begotten Son of God.” This is truly a very great confession. Saint Cyril adds two parenthetical remarks. First he says, “For the lesson was beyond human powers,” and later, “For it was truly beyond human powers.” Indeed, when the Lord said to him:

“You did not say this by yourself. You could never have said it by yourself; My Father revealed it to you.” Therefore, my dear friends, let us understand that we can possess the love of God only when we confess—or, rather, that we know the Father has revealed this truth to us when we confess—that Jesus Christ is the one and only Son of the living God. Paragraph four. “When you hear the word ‘Son,’ do not understand it merely in a figurative sense, but understand Him as truly Son, Son by nature, without beginning. He did not rise from servitude to the advancement of adoption, but is the Son eternally begotten, whose begetting is beyond investigation and incomprehensible.”

Saint Cyril repeats the point because he is giving a lesson, not merely delivering a discourse. When you hear that He is the Son of God, understand this: He is Son by nature and without beginning. He did not advance until He attained adoption as a son. No. And never forget that His begetting is beyond investigation and incomprehensible. What does “beyond investigation” mean? It is not an object for curious inquiry; it is not something you can investigate. Therefore, the precise manner in which He is the Son of God remains an incomprehensible Mystery. “And likewise, when you hear that He is the Firstborn, do not suppose that this is meant in the same way as among human beings.”

When you hear that He is the Firstborn, Saint Cyril says, do not imagine that, as with human beings, another child came after Him. Have there not been more recent heretics who argued that Christ is called the Firstborn? Protestants repeat the claim, though they did not invent it; it is much older. Because Scripture says that the Theotokos (God-bearer) “wrapped her firstborn Son in swaddling clothes,” they blasphemously claim that the Theotokos had other children. Sadly, they do.

Celsus, and Porphyry, the disciple of Celsus: these were the first to teach all these blasphemous positions. Truly, if anyone were ever to read Origen’s work Against Celsus... Origen preserves Celsus’s views for us, because Celsus’s own work has not survived. In refuting Celsus, Origen shows us the blasphemous positions he held. He was a fearsome opponent. And take note: nothing blasphemous said today against the person of Jesus Christ is original. It is all taken from the ancients, especially from Celsus and his disciple Porphyry. There is nothing new.

It is simply the same old thing, chewed over again and again. Therefore, when you hear Christ called “the firstborn,” do not suppose that this means what it does when we speak of human beings. “And elsewhere Scripture says, ‘You are sons of the Lord our God.’ And again, ‘I said, you are gods, and all of you are sons of the Most High.’ I said; I did not beget.” Do you see what I was telling you earlier? God also uses the title “son” for others. “You are sons of the Lord your God,” as it says in Deuteronomy 14:1. And elsewhere: “I said, you are gods, and all of you are sons of the Most High.” Saint Cyril puts it beautifully: “I said; I did not beget.” I said.

I give you that name, just as a father may take a child from an orphanage, from a home for infants, or from a relative or friend, and call that child his own. The child is not his by nature, not by birth, not from his flesh or his seed, but is his by adoption. In the same way God says, “I said”—that is, I call you My children, but you are not from My essence. “They, by being called gods, received adoption as sons; but He did not at some point become the Son by being given that name. Rather, He was begotten as the Son of the Father from the beginning, being above every beginning and every age: the Son of the Father, in all things like Him who begot Him, eternal from the eternal Father.”

“Begotten as life from life, light from light, truth from truth, wisdom from the Wise One, King from King, God from God, and power from power.” This is a beautiful teaching, as Saint Cyril presents it to us. Pay attention. He is the Son of the Father, completely like the One who begot Him. Therefore, He is consubstantial—homoousios. When Saint Cyril says “like,” do not think of what the Semi-Arians once taught, that the Son is of a similar essence. No. He means that one is exactly equal to the other: the essence of the Son is the essence of the Father. Therefore, it is one and the same essence.

Consubstantial, not merely of a similar essence, but consubstantial—of the very same essence. “Eternal from the eternal Father”—forgive me—“being above every beginning and every age.” Here Saint Cyril must have the Gnostic teaching in mind when he says that Christ is above every beginning or principle. And what were these principles? They were the two principles in which the Gnostics of that time believed: the principle of spirit and the principle of matter. They were called principles in the philosophical sense, as things that were never begotten, do not decay or die, but always exist. Yet there are not two principles. There is one God, and there is one principle.

Jesus Christ, as the Son of God, is above every principle and, as Saint Cyril says, above the ages. As you know, “the ages” first of all refers to time. The Old Testament often uses the words “age” and “ages.” It means that the Son of God—and God generally, and the Son—is before the ages, before time, as we say in the Divine Liturgy of Saint Basil the Great: “through whom You also made the ages.” Through this Son You created the ages—that is, time. Therefore, the Son is before the ages; He is before time. But there is also another meaning, because Saint Cyril has the Gnostics in mind.

The Gnostics taught that between God—the good principle—and the evil god, which they identified with matter, the evil principle, there stood the so-called aeons: personified beings whom they called “aeons.” According to the Gnostics, Jesus Christ was the last aeon, because He came into this world, having passed through all the preceding aeons until He finally came into contact with this world and with matter. Thus, they said, He was the last aeon. These are fairy tales worthy of the Arabian Nights. Jesus Christ is nothing of the kind.

This is why the Apostle Paul writes about this subject. He refers to the ages and makes clear that Jesus Christ has absolutely no connection with this Gnostic teaching. None whatsoever. Rather, He is the Creator of the ages in the sense of time, and nothing else. Saint Cyril also says that He is eternal from the eternal Father. What is the Father? Eternal. And what is the Son? Eternal. What is the Father? Life. And what is the Son? Life. He is life begotten from life. What is the Father? Light. And what is the Son? Light. Therefore, He is light from light.

The Father is truth, and the Son is from the truth, for He is truth. The Father is wisdom, and the Son is wisdom. The Father is King, and the Son is King. The Father is God, and the Son is God—God from God. The Father is power, and the Son is power—power from power. Whatever the Father is, the Son is also, because the essence of the Father and the Son is one. Paragraph five: “If you hear someone say in the Gospel, ‘The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham,’ understand this according to the flesh. For He is the Son of David at the consummation of the ages, but the Son of God before all the ages, without beginning.”

When you hear the Gospel say—this is the passage from Matthew read at Christmas, on the Sunday before the Nativity of Christ—“The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ,” that is, the record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, who is the Son of David and the Son of Abraham, this is why it goes on to say that one begot another: Abraham begot Isaac, and so forth, down through David and the rest, until Joseph, the husband of Mary, and Christ, as the Gospel says. Take note that both Joseph and the Theotokos (God-bearer) belonged to the tribe of Judah. Thus, both descended from the royal house, the royal line of David.

Christ is said to be descended from David—forgive me, from Judah—through Joseph, and to be Joseph’s child. Joseph was a descendant of David. Yet because Christ was not of Joseph’s blood, He was Joseph’s son legally, but only legally. He was not of Joseph’s blood, because Joseph’s seed played no part. Therefore, He belonged legally to Joseph, as Joseph was regarded as Christ’s father; but in His actual flesh He belonged to the line of David, because the Theotokos also came from David’s royal lineage. This is very important. Therefore, when you hear it said that He is descended from David, pay attention.

“Understand this according to the flesh”: understand that it refers only to the human nature of Jesus Christ. “For He is the Son of David at the consummation of the ages, but the Son of God before all the ages.” What does it mean that He is the Son before all the ages? It refers to His divine nature. This is what we have been saying all along. He is the Son of God according to His divine nature. Therefore, He is the Son of God before the ages, before time, before creation. But He is the Son of David at the consummation of the ages—that is, when creation is reaching its fulfillment. This is what “at the consummation of the ages” means. “The one nature He assumed, which He did not possess.”

“But the other, which He possesses, He has eternally, having been begotten of the Father.” This phrase has also been used in our hymnography. Let me mention something in passing. The sacred hymnographers, who were profoundly doctrinal, drew abundantly, so to speak, from the great theologians. They took words and entire phrases from their homilies and fashioned them into immortal troparia. “Christ is born; glorify Him,” and what follows, comes from a homily by Saint Gregory the Theologian. The opening of his homily on the Nativity of Christ became a beautiful troparion. And one might say that this most poetic and deeply doctrinal troparion was already there in the opening of Saint Gregory’s homily—so radiant, so beautiful, and so profound. I mention this only in passing. Now, this little phrase, “The one nature He assumed, which He did not possess,” means that He took what He did not have. And what did He not have? Human nature. This is what He assumed. “But the other, which He possesses”—that is, the divine nature—He possesses eternally, having been eternally begotten of the Father. Therefore, He has always possessed the divine nature; He did not always possess the human nature, and this is what He assumed. He has two fathers, Saint Cyril says: David according to the flesh,

and God the Father according to His divinity. With respect to His human nature, He has David as father; with respect to His divine nature, He has God the Father. Two fathers. Let me add something very well known concerning motherhood: according to His divine nature He is without a mother, and according to His human nature He is without a father. Of course, He comes from the line of David, and this is why Saint Cyril says He has David as father: the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy) gave birth to Him, and David was her distant ancestor, so Christ receives flesh from the line of David. Yet according to His human nature He is without a father; He has no human father. There is no contradiction here. As I said, David is His ancestor, even though Saint Cyril speaks here of two fathers. How, then, is Christ without a father according to His human nature? Through the Theotokos, He descends from David.

It is said that Joseph is His father, yet David is also called His father. But what He has from David is subject to time, can be touched, and can be traced through genealogy. What belongs to His divinity is subject neither to time nor to place and cannot be traced through genealogy. “For who shall declare His generation? God is Spirit.” Thus, His human nature, Saint Cyril says, can be traced through genealogy and touched. You may remember that Matthew and Luke both give us Christ’s genealogy, one tracing it in one direction and the other in the opposite direction. They did nothing more, we might say in modern terms, than consult the official registries—the records kept by the Jews—search them, and present what they found.

Moreover, the Old Testament is, so to speak, an irrefutable civil record. Take note that the Jews preserved their genealogies, which is why these are recorded in the Old Testament. In fact, only the genealogy of Judah survived after the Babylonian captivity. The Northern Kingdom, with its ten tribes, was dissolved. The tribe of Benjamin was absorbed into the tribe of Judah and disappeared as a distinct tribe. Only the tribe of Judah remained, and its genealogy was preserved. But notice something else: the priesthood of Aaron was also preserved.

The priests carefully maintained what we might call the registers and records of that age, so that the priesthood would be preserved. The priesthood of Aaron continued until the destruction of Solomon’s Temple. After the destruction of Solomon’s Temple, we no longer have that priesthood. Take careful note of this. Do you know why? It is not accidental. That priesthood is no longer needed; neither is that temple nor the priesthood of Aaron. We have a new priesthood because we have a new covenant. This priesthood is according to the order of Melchizedek, as the second passage says. A change of priesthood means a change of covenant. Or, better:

a change of covenant means a change of priesthood. “I have said: You are a priest forever.” Who is the “I” who has spoken? The Father. And to whom does He say it? “You are—you are a priest forever.” The synagogue itself acknowledges, please note, that this is a messianic psalm. “I have said: You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek.” This was an astonishing thing at the time the Psalm of David was written, in the tenth or eleventh century before Christ. Notice that it does not speak of the priesthood of Aaron, but of the priesthood of Melchizedek. Melchizedek was a local king of Jerusalem before Jerusalem had even become a city of the Jews.

It was a city of the Jebusites. This is remarkable. If the Jews were preparing a critical edition of the Psalm—if I may put it that way—why would they retain this? They might have said, “Could there be some mistake?” But no, they left it as it was. It is a prophecy. Why? Because the priesthood of Aaron would be abolished. Do you see? Christ is the eternal High Priest. Later, the Apostle Paul says in Hebrews, “We have a High Priest who has passed through the heavens.” He passed through the heavens and ascended to the throne of God’s glory. Let us draw near—let us approach the throne of grace, the throne of Christ, that we may find mercy and redemption. This is a great thing, my beloved, if we are to understand who Jesus Christ is.

Therefore, these things can be traced through genealogy because they refer to Christ’s human nature. And so it can finally be shown that this entire history had a prophetic foundation, and from this fact alone they could have recognized that Jesus is the Messiah. How much more so if they had considered the other prophecies, so as to perceive His divine nature as well, which is discussed a little later in this paragraph. But our time has come to an end, so we shall examine it next Monday, God willing.
