Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem presents Jesus Christ as the High Priest who generously shares his name and divine gifts with humanity. The sign of the Cross publicly marks Christian identity, making faithful confession especially important when society mocks or marginalizes believers. Saint Cyril gathers testimony to Christ from the Father, the Holy Spirit, the Theotokos, angels, prophets, places, miracles, healed people, and the dead whom Christ raised.

Beloved, we are now in the sixteenth paragraph of Saint Cyril’s tenth catechetical lecture, which concerns the words, “And in one Lord Jesus Christ.” Saint Cyril continues by considering a different aspect or side of the subject each time: “Thus Jesus Christ is He who came as High Priest of the good things to come and who, because the divinity is free from all envy, has generously shared His own title with everyone.”
“For earthly men who are kings keep the royal title to themselves and do not share it with other men. But Jesus Christ, being the Son of God, has counted us worthy to be called Christians.” Someone might object, however: “The name ‘Christian’ is new. It did not exist before Christ, and new things are often opposed because they seem strange.”
“The prophet safeguarded this beforehand when he said: ‘Those who serve Me shall be called by a new name, which shall be blessed upon the earth.’ Let us question the Jews. Do you serve the Lord? Then show us your new name. For you were called Jews and Israelites in the days of Moses and the other prophets, after your return from Babylon, and even to the present day.”
“Where, then, is the new name? But we who serve the Lord possess the new name. It is new indeed, but it is the new name that shall be blessed upon the earth. This name has taken hold of the whole inhabited world. The Jews are confined to one country, but Christians reach to the ends of the inhabited world, for the name of the only-begotten Son of God is proclaimed.” This is a very interesting and beautiful paragraph, perfectly expressed and firmly grounded in Holy Scripture, as Saint Cyril so often does. Saint Cyril says nothing without grounding it in Holy Scripture. His catechesis is truly admirable. As I have told you before, Saint Cyril’s catechesis is a unique work of the Church’s pastoral ministry
for the instruction of the faithful, the members of the Church. Indeed, it is the only such work that has survived complete in every respect: not only have all the catechetical lectures been preserved, but the work is complete both in form and in content. One of its distinguishing features, then, is that Saint Cyril always grounds his teaching in Holy Scripture. Here he wishes to tell us that the name “Christian” is the new name, the name of those who would come to believe in Christ. This name had already been foretold. It has no connection with the Jews, and, as he will explain shortly—for there are further paragraphs on this subject—a person must bear this name proudly,
proudly, let me say—though I place that word in quotation marks—with boasting, but boasting in the Lord, and without shame. Someone today might say, “I am ashamed to say that I am a Christian.” Yet in one of his catechetical lectures Saint Cyril says magnificently: “Indeed, I would be ashamed to say that I am a Christian if Christ had only been crucified. But since Christ has risen, I am not ashamed to say that I am a Christian.” His argument is very vivid. But let us examine Saint Cyril’s words in somewhat greater detail. Today the name “Christian” is under attack
and insulted. Sadly, Christians are ashamed to bear it. They hasten to cast it aside and present themselves, if not as atheists, then at least as indifferent, or even as secret Christians, as though we were living in a time of persecution. This is incomprehensible. “Thus Jesus Christ is He who came as High Priest of the good things to come.” Jesus Christ, he says, is the One who has come and who stands as High Priest of the good things to come. If I were to speak of “the abundance of the divinity,” the Greek word can be understood in two ways: it can mean abundance, or it can mean freedom from envy. The second meaning is probably more likely. “Because the divinity is free from all envy, He has shared His own title with everyone.” He has given all of us a share in His name precisely because He does not envy us human beings. Could God possibly envy mankind? My beloved, it was the devil who said such a thing. The devil said it to our first parents, if you recall. That claim of the devil in the days of Paradise is still repeated to this day—alas, even by Christians—that God, out of envy,
does not want us to attain this or that. Does God envy human beings? Are we to take as our model the twelve gods of Olympus, who possess human passions? Those supposed gods, those imaginary gods fashioned by human fantasy and endowed with human passions—is that how we are to think of God? God desires to bestow His own name upon us richly. Saint Cyril explains that earthly kings, being merely human, can never give other men a share in their title. That is perfectly natural. A king is a king; he cannot make all his subjects kings. God, however, gives us His own name.
God is God, and yet what does He say? “I said, you are gods.” What king would ever say to his subjects, “I have declared that you are kings”? No king says such a thing. Thus the king’s title and name remain unshared; they are not passed on to his subjects. But what belongs to God does not remain unshared; it is bestowed upon us. Concerning the name “God,” He says, “I said, you are gods.” Here we have what the Fathers teach: man will be made god by grace; he will attain theosis and come to share in this divine glory. And as for the name “Christ”
—which concerns us even more directly—the person who believes in Christ is called by His name: Christian. “But Jesus Christ, being the Son of God”—Jesus Christ, existing as the Son of God—“has counted us worthy to be called Christians.” He has counted us worthy to receive the name Christian. What has He given us? A share in His own name. But someone will say, “The name ‘Christian’ is new; it did not exist before Christ.” And new things are often opposed because they seem strange and unfamiliar. Whenever something is new, objections arise.
No one objects to something that has long been established. But now someone will say, “The name ‘Christian’ is new. How, then, can we say that it is established?” Here I want you to pay close attention. “The prophet safeguarded this beforehand when he spoke.” The prophet secured it for us in advance. Which prophet? Isaiah, chapter 65, verses 15 and 16: “Those who serve Me shall be called by My new name”—a new name that shall be blessed upon the earth.
It is a blessed name. I shall read the prophecy: “Those who serve Me shall be called by a new name”—new indeed—“which shall be blessed upon the earth.” What is this new name that will be given to those who serve God, this name that will truly be blessed? Let us investigate, says Saint Cyril. Let us question the Jews: Do you serve the Lord or not? Then show us your new name. If you serve the Lord, according to the prophet Isaiah you must possess the new name. Show us, then, what your new name is.
If you tell us that you are called Jews, or that you are called Israelites, those names are not new. You have borne them since the time of Moses—and indeed, even before Moses. Saint Cyril says here, “You were called this in the days of Moses and the other prophets.” Those names, then, are very old. To begin with, the name “Jew” comes from Judah. As is well known, the dominant tribe was the tribe of Judah, from which David descended. It was the most numerous of the twelve tribes, and it produced David the king and, after him, Solomon. Furthermore, before the kingdom divided into two, its capital was Jerusalem,
which lay within the inheritance of the tribe of Judah—that is, in the land belonging to Judah. And the Temple of Solomon was also there. Solomon lived in the tenth century before Christ, while David lived in the eleventh and tenth centuries before Christ. For all these reasons, therefore, you understand that the title “Jew” is not new. It is extremely ancient. It derives from Judah, the fourth son of Jacob, whom his father Jacob blessed. When did this happen? Around 1900 before Christ, when Jacob went down into Egypt.
The name “Israelite” is also very ancient. God Himself gave Jacob another name. Jacob means “one who grasps the heel.” Esau and Jacob were twins, and as Esau was being born, Jacob, the second-born, stretched out his hand and took hold of the heel of Esau, the first-born. That is why, when Jacob later supplanted Esau and took his birthright, Esau said to him, “You were rightly named Jacob, the heel-grasper, for you seized my heel in order to overthrow me.” And he did indeed supplant Esau. But this is not the time to say more about that. Later, Jacob returned from his self-imposed exile at God’s command,
now accompanied by his family, and there he wrestled with God throughout the night. He wrestled in a vision, in a dream. “Let Me go.” “I will not let You go unless You bless me.” God blessed him there and told him that his name would no longer be Jacob, but Israel. The name Israel means “beloved.” Therefore, the name Israel is exceedingly ancient. How ancient? It comes from the age of the Patriarchs, since it begins with Jacob. Whether I say “Jew” or “Israelite,” then, these names are of great antiquity. Shall I also mention the name “Hebrew”? Saint Cyril does not mention it here, but I shall explain it to you, since
the name “Hebrew” likewise means “one who has crossed over” in Aramaic, the language spoken in Mesopotamia, from which Abraham set out. When Abraham reached the land of Canaan, the inhabitants called him a Hebrew—that is, one who had crossed over, the man who crossed the Euphrates River and came to settle there in the land of Canaan. Thus even the name “Hebrew,” although it was not a name given to him by God, is nevertheless extremely ancient. It dates from the time of Abraham. Saint Cyril therefore says: “You were called Jews and Israelites,” and from the days of Moses and the other prophets
you retained these same names, even after your return from the Babylonian captivity, and right down to the present day. Where, then, is the new name? Isaiah, who lived in the eighth century before Christ, speaks of a new name. Where is your new name? But we Christians, because we serve the Lord, possess the new name. And what is our new name? Christian. It is new, indeed. Yes, you accuse us of bearing a name that is difficult to accept because it is new. Yes, it is new:
a new name that has been blessed upon the earth. And Saint Cyril says that this new name, the name “Christian,” “has taken hold of the whole inhabited world.” It has seized the entire inhabited world—that is, the name “Christian” has spread throughout the whole world.
But the name “Jew” is limited; it belongs to only one country. Christians, however, are found at every end of the inhabited world. “For the name of the only-begotten Son of God is proclaimed”—because the name of the only-begotten Son of God is proclaimed everywhere.
So this is the new name, as the Prophet Isaiah says. And he adds—I repeat—that it is the name of those who are blessed upon the earth. Is there any greater blessing than to say, “I am a Christian”? Of course, before Christ came, the blessed name was “Israelite,” because, as I told you, Israel means “beloved.” But afterward Israel kicked, as it says in the Ode, in the Third Ode—although in our hymnology it is presented as the Second, it is the Third in Holy Scripture—in the Ode of Moses, which says that Israel “grew fat and became stout,” and so forth, and that “the beloved kicked.” The beloved kicked. Yes, he kicked.
Consequently, from that point onward he was no longer the beloved. He had essentially lost, we might say, the title of “beloved.” But who is the beloved now? It is the one who bears the new and blessed name: “Christian.” And because Christ is the Great High Priest who never exhausts His giving, the Great God who never exhausts His generosity, He gives us something of His own name. He is called Christ, and we are called Christians. Tell me, please, you who are listening to me and who see how great, exalted, and honorable the name “Christian” is: will you be ashamed to say it? Shall we be ashamed to say that we are Christians?
You know that the sign that I am a Christian is the sign of the Precious Cross. Are we going to make the sign of the Cross under our jackets? Or will we refrain from making the sign of the Cross when we eat in a student dining hall, at a public restaurant, at a reception, or at a celebration? No, my beloved, we will not be ashamed to make the sign of the Cross. Suppose we belong to an association and wear a badge on the left lapel of our jacket. That badge shows that we belong to that association, and we wear it as a mark of honor. In the same way, my badge, the sign that shows I am a Christian, is the sign of the Cross. Why, then, should I be ashamed?
Should I hold back from saying that I am a Christian? At this point, allow me to mention something from a conversation I had this morning with someone in a bookstore. There was a book about Saint Symeon the Fool for Christ and Saint Andrew the Fool for Christ. “Fool” means someone considered mad. There was a time, my beloved, when the title of Christian was held in honor—very great honor. To appear as an ascetic, a hermit, someone living in virginity, and so forth, was a great honor, a very great one. People would flock to honor such persons. But these people wanted to live in humility, and they feared the great honors
that their age and society bestowed upon them. And so some of them began to pretend that they were mad, that they were fools. Do not be surprised. Every age produces something that seems excessive to our own age. Yet it is not excessive, because such things are born from the conditions of each age and must be understood within the age that produced them. Consider the stylite, for example: someone who remained on top of a pillar for forty or fifty years and never came down. Does that seem astonishing to you? Think of it: never coming down, with no roof overhead, exposed to the sun, the rain, the snow, the cold, and the heat.
I tell you, such a thing could not be repeated today. The same is true of the fool for Christ, the man who pretended to be mad. But were they truly mad? No, they were not. They hid their holiness behind their apparent foolishness. They did this because the name of Christian was greatly honored then; today it is not. So you see how easily, if we were to join some association of atheists, we might hasten to cast off the title of Christian and become crypto-Christians. For today there is little honor in saying, “I am a Christian.” I hear boys and girls say to their parents, “You little Christian woman,” or to a father, “You little Christian man.” Did you hear that? “You little Christian man”—because that is how children speak at school. That is how they speak.
In our time, I do not need to play the fool, because the very fact that I am a Christian already gives others the impression that I am mad, that I am a fool. So there is no need for me to hide my holiness behind foolishness; but neither must I hide myself. Let them call me mad. In former times, people pretended to be fools. Today we are not pretending. Yet do you not think that today this is not merely an act of humility, but also a confession of faith? It is indeed a confession—one that the fools for Christ of that earlier age did not have to make. Please, let us not despise our identity as Christians. Saint Cyril then refers, in the next two paragraphs, the seventeenth and eighteenth, to the Apostle Paul. And he says—I will not read them to you, because it would take us far too long to finish, and today, God willing, I would like us to complete the tenth catechetical lecture, though this does not exhaust the subject of the person of Jesus Christ, since there are other aspects still to consider—that Paul had been an enemy of Christ. Yet when Christ was revealed to him, he did not hesitate to become a believer. Saint Cyril says: “Do you see? If we were speaking about Peter and John, you might suspect that they were being partial, that they were devoted to the name of Christ. But Paul showed no partiality, because he had been an enemy; and Paul was enlisted
into Christ’s service from the camp of His enemies.” Somewhere Paul says—Paul proclaims, forgive me—“Do you seek proof that Christ is speaking in me?” He says to the Corinthians: “Are you seeking proof from me that I have Christ within me, that Christ is speaking? Do you want proof?” Paul lived Christ; Christ was his very life, and he bore the title of Christian worthily. Indeed, if someone reads these two paragraphs—and, as I understand, a few people have bought the works of Saint Cyril, perhaps very few, but I commend them—then those of you who know the Ancient Greek taught in secondary school, please look at the text. It is very easy, extremely easy.
I did not study philology; I am not a philologist. Yet his Ancient Greek is accessible—even with what you call the fragmentary Ancient Greek we learned during the Occupation, when we had no proper schooling. Take the text and read it; you will discover many things. In these two paragraphs, which I am not going to analyze for you, you will see that Saint Cyril presents the Apostle Paul as the model of the believer in the New Testament. Paul stands as the prototype of the New Testament believer—a prototype. That is why we must imitate Paul, as he himself says: “Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ.” And now I proceed to the nineteenth paragraph.
He says—yes, forgive me—“My beloved, there are many true testimonies concerning Christ.” Many indeed. Have we ever considered how many testimonies bear witness to Christ? This final paragraph is truly beautiful, truly beautiful. It contains a multitude of testimonies, which I shall now read to you briefly. You will see that these testimonies leave no room for anyone to remain an atheist—or rather, not an atheist, but an unbeliever—with regard to the person of Jesus Christ. For, as you know, we make a distinction. We call someone who does not accept the person of Christ an unbeliever, and someone who does not accept the existence of God at all an atheist.
In reality, as far as Holy Scripture is concerned—and I have told you this before—there is no distinction between an unbeliever and an atheist. “He who does not accept the Son,” John the Evangelist says explicitly, “does not accept the Father either.” Consequently, deep down, the unbeliever is an atheist. And now, my beloved, Saint Cyril enumerates the many testimonies in support of Jesus Christ. I will dwell only briefly, if at all, on each testimony, since many are self-evident. The Father bears witness from heaven concerning the Son. You remember the Father’s words: “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” And this testimony was
given three times. The first was at the Baptism, the second at the Transfiguration, and a third time when a voice like thunder was heard and the people said, “What is this? What is this?” And the Lord said that this voice had not come for His sake, but for theirs. It was the testimony of the heavenly Father concerning the Son. The Holy Spirit bears witness, descending bodily in the form of a dove. As is well known, Saint John the Baptist testifies to this. He said, “The One who told me to baptize”—and who told him to baptize? The Father told him—“said to me, ‘You will see the Spirit descending in the form of a dove; He is My beloved Son, the Messiah, Christ.’” Gabriel the Archangel bears witness when he announces the good news to Mary. What does Gabriel the Archangel say to the Theotokos? That He is the Son of God who becomes man, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will save His people. The angel who appeared to the shepherds likewise said that the One who was to be born—or who had been born—would save His people. The Theotokos, the Virgin, bears witness. The Theotokos herself is a witness to the event.
She related all these astonishing and wondrous things to Luke the Evangelist, who recorded them. Remember the verse in Luke which says that the Theotokos kept all these things that happened to her in her heart. When the work of the Incarnation and salvation had been fulfilled, she related them to Luke, who recorded them in his Gospel and handed them down to us. The blessed place of Bethlehem bears witness. There, he says, is the place where Christ was born, that very cave. Egypt bears witness. Egypt itself is a witness, for the Son of God fled there,
and it received the Master when He was an infant in the flesh. Symeon, who received Him in his arms, bears witness. Symeon the God-Receiver said: “Now You are letting Your servant depart, O Master. Now, Lord, let me die; now release me from this life, for my eyes have seen Your salvation.” His eyes had seen the salvation God sent into the world, “a light for revelation to the Gentiles and the glory of Your people Israel.” Do you see the prophecy? “A light for revelation to the Gentiles,” and certainly also to Israel. And because Israel brings forth the Messiah, He is the glory of Israel.
Glory—great glory. Symeon, then, is also a witness for Jesus Christ. And Anna the prophetess was standing nearby when the Theotokos went to the Temple with Joseph. Anna the prophetess, a woman of self-restraint, deep reverence, and ascesis, also bears witness concerning Him. Scripture says either that she was eighty-four years old or that she had been a widow for eighty-four years. There is a small difficulty and ambiguity in interpreting the passage. In any case, she was a very elderly woman, and when she saw Jesus
being carried in the arms of the Theotokos, she said: “He is the salvation of Israel, the Messiah, Christ.” As people entered and left the Temple to worship, she would say, “The Messiah has come! The Messiah has come!” Whatever this woman said was certainly by revelation from God, founded upon her life of self-restraint, deep reverence, and ascesis. John the Baptist bears witness. This is the John who was truly “the greatest of the prophets, the herald of the New Testament, and, in a certain manner, the one who joins both Testaments within himself, the Old and the New.” He is the greatest of the prophets and the herald of the New Testament; in a certain manner, Saint Cyril says, he is
the one who unites and joins the two Testaments, the Old Testament and the New Testament—an intermediary figure. He therefore bears witness concerning Jesus Christ and says: “I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize told me, ‘The One upon whom you see the Spirit descending in the form of a dove—He is the One.’” And what did John say? “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.” Among the rivers, the Jordan bears witness. Among the seas, the Sea of Tiberias bears witness,
the sea where the Lord so often taught, moved about, and traveled. The blind bear witness. Think of all the blind people whom the Lord made well and healed. They are witnesses. Each could say, “Yes, He opened my eyes.” The blind man by the gate of Jericho cried, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me.” Do you see? “Son of David” means “Christ,” the descendant of David. And afterward he says, “Lord, that I may receive my sight.” “What do you want Me to do for you?” the Lord asks. “Lord, that I may receive my sight.” “Son of David” means descendant of David: according to His humanity, Man and Christ. “Lord” means God. Thus he is saying, “O God-Man, grant that I may receive my sight.” “Receive your sight,” says the Lord. Do you see? With one word—“Receive your sight”—and he saw. So this blind man, and all the other blind people whom the Lord healed, bear witness. The lame bear witness, those whom the Lord made well. The dead who were raised bear witness. Those whom the Lord raised from the dead are witnesses. There is a beautiful troparion for Holy Week. “My people,” it says,
“My people, what have I done to you, that you put Me to death? I healed your blind, your lame, your paralytics, and your lepers; I raised your dead. In what way have I wronged you?” It is a beautiful hymn.
The demons also bear witness, saying, “What have we to do with You, Jesus? We know who You are: the Holy One of God.” The demons themselves come forward to offer their testimony through the mouths of the possessed. And it was not only the possessed man—or the possessed people—of the Gergesenes. There were many, my dear friends, for Holy Scripture tells us that the possessed cried out that He was the Son of God. Then the Lord rebuked them and commanded them, “Be silent! Be silent!” Yet they continually revealed that He was Jesus Christ. “What have we to do with You, Jesus?” What is there between us and You?
Is there any relationship between us? There is none. “We know who You are,” they said; “we know that You are the Holy One of God.” Do you understand what it means that even the demons themselves offered this testimony? It is astonishing. It is another matter that they lead people into unbelief and atheism. The winds also bear witness, for they were commanded and muzzled. Even the elements of nature bear witness: they receive His command and fall silent. “Be still; be muzzled.” Once, when the Lord was sleeping in the boat, the disciples woke Him and cried, “Master, we are perishing!” The Lord arose and said:
What did He do? He turned toward the sea and the wind and said, “Be silent; be muzzled.” Then He turned to the disciples and said, “Why are you so lacking in faith?” It was as though He were saying, “Do you know whom you have with you in the boat?” The disciples were filled with fear and said, “Who can this be?” Notice how they had addressed Him: “Master.” They were still at the beginning of their journey and did not yet know Jesus well. They called Him Master, and they wondered, “Who is this, that with a single word He commands even the elements of nature?” The disciples witnessed all these things, my dear friends, and, as we shall see at the end, they gave their lives for this testimony.
“The loaves bear witness, having been multiplied for five thousand.” Those five loaves are witnesses: they were multiplied, became many, and satisfied five thousand people, besides the women and children. The holy Wood of the Cross also bears witness: “It remains visible to this day and, through those who in faith receive portions of it, has by now filled almost the whole world.” This Precious Wood, the Wood of the Cross, is itself a witness. Remember that Saint Cyril is writing in the middle of the fourth century. I estimate that he composed these catechetical lectures around AD 350. The Church of the Resurrection had already been built at the place where Saint Helen had found the Precious Wood, the Cross of Christ. You know from Tradition how it was confirmed that the wood they found was truly the Cross of Christ, and not an ordinary piece of wood or the cross of one of the thieves. They laid it upon a dead man, and the dead man was raised. Thus it was confirmed to be the Cross of Christ. Saint Cyril then says something familiar to us: from this Precious Wood, “through those who in faith receive portions of it,”
the whole world has been filled: “It has by now filled almost the whole world.” Today it is well known that two substantial pieces of the Precious Wood are preserved on the Holy Mountain. One of them came to our city a few years ago—two or three years ago—and many of you went to venerate it. We had the great and perhaps unique honor—something that may never happen again—of having the Precious Cross brought to our own monastery. It was a truly singular honor. It was the finest day our monastery has ever known. We also celebrated the blessing of water, which, in my unworthiness, I performed with great... what can I say? I regard it as the greatest event.
We preserved some of the blessed water from that service in a small bottle, and we still have it. I do not think such a thing will happen again; it was unrepeatable, because the Precious Cross, the Precious Wood, does not readily leave the Holy Mountain. We photographed it, venerated it, and venerated it again. We carried the Precious Cross in procession all around the monastery. With the Precious Cross we sanctified every part of the monastery. As I have said, it was a unique blessing of the Precious Cross. “The palm tree beside the ravine bears witness, having supplied the branches to those who then acclaimed Him.” As you know, the Holy Evangelist speaks of palm branches. The word translated as “branch” is not Greek in origin; it simply means a branch.
Today, when we speak of the branches used on Palm Sunday, we often mean laurel branches. But that is not the original meaning: the word means simply “branch.” Thus “the branches of the palms” would be translated as “the branches of the palm trees.” Saint Cyril says that the branches are witnesses—the palm branches that the people took when they welcomed Jesus and proclaimed that He truly was the Messiah entering the city of Jerusalem. Gethsemane also bears witness. The place of Gethsemane is a witness, for it received Christ in His agony. And the story of Judas—that wretched story of Judas—almost speaks plainly to those who understand.
With the money Judas threw into the Temple, they purchased that field, the Field of Blood, Akeldama, as a burial place for strangers. The Jews themselves could point out that this field had been purchased with that money. You see, these things are witnesses. If we were standing in a court of law, consider how much testimony could be presented for the existence of this Person—and not only for His existence, but also for the recognition of who He is. Who is Jesus Christ? “This holy Golgotha, rising above us, bears witness by remaining visible.” It is well known that the Church of the Resurrection was built upon Golgotha.
That is what Saint Cyril means by “rising above us”: Golgotha stands above us and bears its own testimony. “The tomb of holiness bears witness, as does the stone that remains there to this day.” You see, some things are vividly present, and Saint Cyril lived very close to the events preserved in Tradition. The tomb and the stone that covered it—covering its entrance from the side, of course, since the tomb had been hewn into the rock—were still there before them. “The sun, which now shines, bears witness, for it was darkened at the time of the saving Passion.” This is the same sun that lost its light for three
hours, from the sixth hour, noon, until the ninth hour, three in the afternoon. Was it an eclipse? Even if it had been an eclipse, it would have been an extraordinary event. But it was not an eclipse, because a solar eclipse never lasts three hours. A normal eclipse lasts only as long as it takes for the moon’s disk, passing between the sun and the earth, to move away from the face of the sun so that the sun appears again. It lasts only a short time, never three hours. Truly, darkness covered the whole land—the land of Judea—for three hours. It was a miracle. Saint Cyril says that the sun shining now bears witness to what happened then: “It was darkened at the time of the saving Passion.” The darkness that came from the sixth hour until the ninth also bears witness. And not only the sun, but the darkness itself bears witness. The light that shone from the ninth hour until evening bears witness. The sun, the light, and the darkness all bear witness to the event. “The holy Mount of Olives bears witness, for from there He ascended to the Father.” It is well known that the Lord was taken up into heaven from the Mount of Olives.
The Mount of Olives, Saint Cyril says, comes forward as a witness to the event. “The clouds visible to mortal eyes bear witness, for they received the Master”—the cloud that received Him as He was taken up. “The heavenly gates also bear witness, for they received the Master. Of these the Psalmist said, ‘Lift up your gates, O rulers.’” “Be lifted up, you everlasting doors, and the King of glory shall enter,” as Psalm 23 says. Former enemies also bear witness. Saint Cyril now draws testimony from the enemies, from the enemy camp. Those who were once enemies are witnesses too. “Among them is the blessed Paul, who was an enemy for a short time,”
“but served Him for a long time.” For a short time Paul stood as an enemy of Christ, but for many years he labored for Christ and served Christ. Remember also the centurion, that remarkable Roman officer. When he saw what had taken place, he said, “Truly this was a Son of God.” He did not say “the Son of God,” with the definite article, because he was an idolater. He did not know the true God. He was simply testifying: “What I see is astonishing; this man can only be a son of God.” You see? These men had been enemies.
They had stood there to crucify Him, even if only in the course of their duty. “The twelve Apostles bear witness, proclaiming the truth not only with words, but also through their own sufferings and deaths.” My dear friends, do you see how many testimonies there are? Yet Saint Cyril has not finished. I would like to dwell on this testimony, one of the last. Even if Saint Cyril had recorded none of the others, one testimony alone would satisfy me: the testimony of the Apostles. Do you know why? Because they did not give their testimony merely with words. They gave it with their lives—lives filled with suffering, death, and terrible martyrdom. It is well known that John alone did not die as a martyr, though he certainly lived a martyr’s life in many ways, including his exile. All the others ended their lives by martyrdom. My dear friends, no one gives his life for a fairy tale. No one does. Only a madman gives his life for a fairy tale. A rational man would never do so, nor would a philosopher. If the Apostles had not understood who Christ is, they would not have given their lives. Because they understood who Christ is, they gave their lives, and gave them gladly, for Christ. This testimony is astonishing: the Apostles gave their lives for Christ.
And so did all those who later stood as martyrs. But let us not go too quickly, for Saint Cyril says this a little further on. “Peter’s shadow bears witness, for in the name of Christ it healed the sick.” When Peter passed by, his shadow alone brought healing. “The handkerchiefs and aprons bear witness”—the aprons and handkerchiefs of Paul. Having touched his skin and absorbed his sweat, they likewise brought healing through the power of Christ working through Paul, as happened in Ephesus. “Persians and Goths and all those from among the nations bear witness.” All who became Christians from among the nations bear witness, from the Persians in the East to the Goths of Northern Europe.
“They do more than die for Him whom they never saw with bodily eyes.” They not only die; they go gladly to death for Christ, though their eyes have never seen Him. Where, then, does their testimony come from? You know, when someone resolves to suffer martyrdom for Christ, shortly before giving his life he receives clear knowledge of Christ. The martyrs saw Christ. They could never have given their lives if they had not reached that point. The person makes the beginning: “I give my life. Do whatever you wish.” Once the person makes that beginning, Christ appears—in the prison or at the hour of death—and says, “Do not be afraid.” Thus the martyrs gladly gave their lives, knowing that
the Lord Jesus Christ is true. “The demons cast out by the faithful even to this day bear witness.” The demons still bear witness today when Christ’s faithful drive them out by invoking His name. So many, so varied, and still more numerous are the witnesses. “Can Christ, who is borne witness to by all these, still be disbelieved?” Can we still say that Christ, to whom all these bear witness, is not believed? Does anyone still remain in unbelief? “If anyone, then, has until now been among the unbelieving, let him henceforth believe. But if he was already a believer,”
“let him receive an even greater increase of faith, believing in our Lord Jesus Christ. And know whose name you bear: you have been called a Christian. Guard that name.” Take care of Christ’s name within yourself; preserve it. It is truly a great title of honor. “Do not let our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, be blasphemed because of you.” Do not let your disorderly life become the cause of Christ’s name being blasphemed. “Rather, let your good works shine before men, so that when they see them, they may glorify, in Christ Jesus our Lord, the Father who is in heaven, to whom be glory now and unto the ages of ages. Amen.”
Let your good works become a cause for Christ to be glorified. My dear friends, we bear a great name, a great title: we are Christians. Let us hold this name high. It is an honored name, the blessed name upon the earth. Let us not fear those who insult it. Let us hold it high and bear it worthily. We are Christians.

Συνεπώς, εφεξής δεν είναι ο ηγαπημένος. Απώλεσε κατ’ ουσίαν, θα λέγαμε, τον τίτλον του ηγαπημένου. Όμως τώρα ποιος είναι ο ηγαπημένος; Είναι το καινούργιο όνομα, το ευλογημένο, είναι το όνομα «χριστιανός». Και επειδή ο Χριστός είναι ο Μέγας Αρχιερεύς που δεν εξαντλείται να δίδει, είναι ο Μέγας Θεός που δεν εξαντλείται να σκορπά, γι’ αυτό μας δίδει από το όνομά Του εκείνο που έχει ο ίδιος. Λέγεται Χριστός και εμείς λεγόμαστε χριστιανοί. Πέστε μου, σας παρακαλώ, εσείς που με ακούτε και βλέπετε πόσο σπουδαίο και υψηλό και τιμητικό είναι το όνομα «χριστιανός». Θα ντρέπεστε να το λέτε; Θα ντρεπόμαστε να το λέμε ότι είμαστε χριστιανοί;
Ξέρετε ότι το σημάδι του ότι είμαι χριστιανός είναι το σημείο του Τιμίου Σταυρού. Και θα κάνουμε το σταυρό μας κάτω από το σακάκι μας; Ή δεν θα κάνουμε το σταυρό μας όταν τρώμε σε ένα εστιατόριο φοιτητικό ή έξω, στα εστιατόρια που υπάρχουν, ή σε μια δεξίωση ή σε μια γιορτή; Όχι, αγαπητοί μου, δεν θα ντραπούμε να κάνουμε το σημείο του Σταυρού. Είναι το σημάδι, όπως θα λέγαμε, όταν ανήκουμε σε ένα σύλλογο και έχουμε μια κονκάρδα εδώ αριστερά, στο πέτο, στο σακάκι μας, η οποία κονκάρδα φανερώνει ότι ανήκομαι, είμαι μέλος εκείνου του Α ή Β συλλόγου, και το φοράμε αυτό το σημάδι ως τιμητικό σημάδι. Το σημάδι λοιπόν, η κονκάρδα μου που δείχνει ότι είμαι χριστιανός, είναι το σημείο του Σταυρού. Γιατί λοιπόν θα πρέπει να ντρέπομαι;
Δαίμονες μαρτυρούσι λέγοντες: «Τί ἡμῖν καὶ σοί, Ἰησοῦ; Οἴδαμέν σε τίς εἶ, ὁ Ἅγιος τοῦ Θεοῦ». Αυτοί οι ίδιοι δαίμονες έρχονται να δώσουν τη μαρτυρία διά στόματος δαιμονιζομένων. Μάλιστα δεν είναι μόνον ο δαιμονισμένος ή η δαιμονισμένη των Γεργεσηνών. Είναι, αγαπητοί μου, πολλοί, γιατί αναφέρεται στην Αγία Γραφή ότι οι δαιμονιζόμενοι έλεγαν ότι είναι ο Υιός του Θεού και τότε, λέγει, ο Κύριος τους επετίμα, τους μάλωνε. «Σωπάστε! Σωπάστε!» Εκείνοι όμως διαρκώς απεκάλυπταν ότι είναι ο Ιησούς Χριστός. «Τί ἡμῖν καὶ σοί, Ἰησοῦ;» Τι ανάμεσά μας και ανάμεσά Σου;
