Summary

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem teaches that the single name “Lord Jesus Christ” was wondrously foreshadowed by the prophets and reveals Christ’s identity and mission. Christ is the ontological Savior who restores the complete human person—soul and body—through repentance, healing, and the resurrection of the dead. Saint Cyril identifies the historical Jesus as the Christ and Messiah, rejecting both the denial of His divinity and attempts to reduce Him to a mythical solar figure.

Beloved, we are now at the twelfth paragraph of the tenth catechetical lecture of Saint Cyril, Bishop of Jerusalem. The subject of this catechesis is the person of Jesus Christ: “I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only-Begotten Son of God,” and so forth. Let us continue. “There is one Lord Jesus Christ, a wondrous name, mystically foretold by the prophets.” There is one Lord Jesus Christ, he says—one—and His is a wondrous name, foretold indirectly and mystically by the prophets.

A wondrous name. We find this word, “wondrous,” in Isaiah when he speaks specifically of the Word (Logos): “Wondrous.” The complete name is “the Lord Jesus Christ.” Each of these, of course, is also a name in its own right. Yet all three together form one name: the Lord Jesus Christ. This name is spoken of and foretold indirectly by the prophets.

For Isaiah the prophet says, “Behold, the Savior comes. He comes bearing His reward.” Among the Hebrews, the name Jesus means Savior. I told you last time that Joshua the son of Nun is a type of Jesus Christ, and that Jesus means Savior. To put it simply in Greek, it is what we would now call the name Sotiris, meaning Savior. This was not given merely as a random or accidental name. As you know, the Hebrews never gave names unless those names revealed something about the person

or about events that had taken place in that person’s life. Indeed, we often find someone being renamed precisely because of a particular event in sacred history. Joshua the son of Nun was originally called Hoshea. Nun was his father. He was Hoshea the son of Nun, but Moses changed his name from Hoshea to Joshua—most prophetically. Abraham was called Abram, and God renamed him Abraham. Jacob was called Jacob, and God renamed him Israel, and so forth. God Himself also renames people in the New Testament. Peter was called Simon Bar-Jonah—Simon, son of Jonah, for bar in Hebrew means son. The Lord says to him, “Simon Bar-Jonah.” You will no longer be called by that name, but Peter, meaning rock. The two brothers John and James are called Boanerges, meaning sons of thunder. This indicates, I would say, a forceful character—not so much in their outward behavior as in their spirit. In outward behavior, it is the Apostle Peter who is forceful. I want you to see, then, that this practice of renaming is common in Holy Scripture.

The name Jesus was not given to Jesus Christ by chance; it was given because it had something specific to reveal. Saint Cyril therefore says: “He was called Jesus, not by men, but openly by an angel, who did not come on his own authority but was sent by the power of God, saying to Joseph: ‘Do not be afraid to take Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call His name Jesus.’” Then, giving the reason for this name, the angel immediately says: “For He will save His people from their sins.” In other words, Jesus Christ was called by the human name Jesus

not by men, but openly, directly, and clearly by the angel himself: “You shall call the Child’s name Jesus.” Immediately afterward, the angel also says that the Child is of the Spirit: “That which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit,” and so forth. He even gives the reason for the name. The word designation here means name. He explains the reason for the name with the words, “For He…” The word for means because. Why, then, is He named Jesus? Because “He will save His people from their sins.” He would save His people from their sins, and for this reason He is called Jesus—that is, Savior.

Saint Cyril lived in a Jewish environment. These catechetical lectures were delivered in Jerusalem, where he served as Bishop. He belongs to the early period of the Church, the fourth century—more precisely, the middle of the fourth century. He therefore lived in a setting where Jewish influence was strong. For this reason, he never misses an opportunity to refer continually to the prophets, emphasizing that Jesus Christ is the One foretold by them and must therefore be accepted. It is as though he were saying: If you Jews heed the prophets and interpret their words, then we tell you that Jesus Christ is the very One whom they prophesied. Saint Cyril therefore says: “How does One who has not yet been born already have a people? Understand that He existed even before He was born.” What did the angel say? “He will save His people.” Saint Cyril asks: How can the angel speak of His people when He has not yet been born? Ordinarily, a person gains a people only after he is born, reaches manhood, and eventually acquires followers. How, then, can the angel say that this Child who is to be born already has a people of His own? Could it be, then, that He

already existed? Indeed. “He existed even before He was born.” He was; He existed before His birth. You see how Saint Cyril seizes every opportunity to emphasize the pre-existence of Jesus Christ. He stresses that Jesus Christ is not merely an ordinary fellow countryman of the Jews, but the incarnate Son of God. This is what it means to emphasize His pre-existence: Jesus Christ existed beforehand, not as an angel or an archangel, but as God. “The prophet also says this in His person: ‘From my mother’s womb He called my name.’” This is the prophet Isaiah, chapter 49, verse 1: He called my name from my mother’s womb.

Before Jesus Christ was born, the angel spoke to Joseph, who had been troubled by the pregnancy of the Theotokos. The angel reassured him and also told him what name to give the Child. Yet this too had been written in Isaiah. While I was still in my mother’s womb, the prophetic word says, my name was given to me. “The angel also foretells this, saying that He shall be called Jesus,” for the angel foretold that He would be called Jesus. We now come to the thirteenth paragraph. “Jesus, then, means Savior among the Hebrews, but in the Greek language, the One who heals.” In Hebrew, therefore, Jesus

means Savior. In Greek, however, He is the One who heals and saves. It amounts to the same thing: the Healer. For what does Savior mean? I have told you before, but new people and new brothers are present each time, so please do not misunderstand me. I remember, more or less, what I have said again and again. I repeat these things not because I want to indulge in tiresome repetition, but because there are certain truths we must learn. A schoolteacher does the same thing: he says them and says them again. So does an instructor in the army. Beloved, the word comes from the verb meaning to save or preserve whole. After some ordeal, we say that we are safe and whole,

and unharmed. But being whole is not the same as being unharmed. I may be whole without being unharmed. I may still have both hands, for example, but have a wound on one of them. In that case, I am not unharmed, because I have suffered an injury. Yet I still have both hands, and so I remain whole and complete. Jesus Christ is called Savior because, through the Resurrection of the dead, He will restore us to our complete wholeness. A human being is not fully a human being when the body lies alone in the grave and the soul is alone in Hades or in Paradise. The human person must be whole. This is why, as you know, the body is called a relic—a remnant,

what remains of a human being—because the complete human person is soul and body together. This separation came about because we sinned in the persons of Adam and Eve, and thus death entered. But Jesus Christ comes as Savior: He saves us by restoring our wholeness. The word wholeness appears in the New Testament—the wholeness of our human existence. Never forget this. For this reason, Jesus Christ is the Savior above all. When you hear that idle talk—“Christ came to save us, but what does that mean? Does it mean whether or not we have food to eat, or whether or not we have the means to receive medical treatment?”—

beloved, those things are secondary. Jesus Christ is the Savior in an ontological sense: He saves our very being. He did not come merely to give us food and drink. If you wish, He gives us these things as well. But when? When we obey His commandments. God says, “If you listen to Me, you shall eat the good things of the earth. But if you do not listen to Me, the sword shall devour you.” Today we face a crisis of civilization and a crisis in our societies. We may even be awaiting self-destruction, for the absence of peace is nothing other than self-destruction. We do not know what will happen, and so forth. Why is all this happening? We could earn our daily bread peacefully and live well, but we refuse. We speak of peace while leaving out Jesus Christ, who is the Lord of peace and the Prince of peace. We speak about peace apart from Jesus Christ.

If you wish, God gives us even this. But because we do not accept Christ as the Ruler and Prince of peace, we do not eat our bread in peace and contentment. Christ is not to blame for that. Is Christ not also Savior in these earthly matters? He is, but this is not the primary meaning of His salvation. The main point is that the Resurrection of the dead will take place. We receive ontological salvation—that is, salvation concerning our very existence. I beg you never to forget this. Thus, as Saint Cyril says, in the Greek language He is the One who heals, because “He is the physician of souls and bodies and the healer of spirits; the healer of those physically blind, while also enlightening their understanding.” He illumines the understanding of human beings. He is the physician of those who are visibly lame,

the physician of those who cannot walk, and He takes sinners by the hand and leads them to metanoia, to repentance. “He says to the paralytic, ‘Sin no more,’” and, “Take up your bed and walk.” One word concerns the body, the other the soul. The man was healed in two ways. “Sin no more” concerns the soul. “Rise, take up your bed, and go to your house” concerns the body. Now pay attention to a beautiful and exceedingly precious phrase from Saint Cyril: “Because the body had been paralyzed on account of the soul’s sin, He first healed the soul, so that afterward He might bring healing to the body as well.”

Thus, because the soul sins, the body becomes paralyzed. For this reason, the Lord first heals the soul and then brings healing to the body. First He says, “Do not sin from now on,” and then, “Rise, take up your bed, and go to your house.” First the soul, then the body. But would you like to hear something more? The Lord could have stopped after healing the soul, without healing the body. This is a very common miracle, though people do not see it. Consider the paralytic whom his four friends lowered through the roof. Christ said to him, “Your sins are forgiven.”

He did not tell him, “Rise from your bed.” He stopped there: “Your sins are forgiven.” Then the Pharisees reasoned among themselves and said, “By what authority does He forgive sins?” Then He said to the paralytic—forgive me—He said to them: “Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’?” The second is easier. The first is difficult, because God alone truly forgives sins. But how would Christ demonstrate that He is God and has authority to forgive sins? He therefore performed the visible miracle immediately afterward. “But so that you may know,” He says, “that the Son of Man has authority on earth”—what authority? The authority to forgive sins—He then speaks to the paralytic. Notice the sequence. See how much time passed and what took place in between. And what does He now say? “I say to you, rise and walk; take up your bed and go to your house.”

The second healing was delayed. Why? Deliberately: first, so that He might answer the Pharisees, and second, so that He might teach us that the two healings are distinct. If God judges it best, He heals only the soul and not the body. When does this happen? For our instruction. How? Listen. Someone lies sick in bed, and the illness has brought him to spiritual maturity. His spiritual father comes, and the man makes his Holy Confession. His soul has been healed—his soul has indeed been healed—but for reasons of spiritual instruction known to God alone, the bodily illness remains. Thus we have the miracle of the soul’s healing, but not the miracle of the body’s healing. At other times, however, God judges it best to grant bodily healing as well. Then He gives the second healing too.

The second is rarer. But I will ask you the same question the Lord put to the Pharisees: Which is greater? Clearly, the healing of the body is less than the healing of the soul. And now I ask: Which is the greater miracle when it occurs within history and within the Church—the healing of bodies or the healing of souls? Clearly, the healing of souls. We are therefore witnesses of great miracles. We truly are—both you and I, and I and you. How many people have we seen who were brought to maturity by an ordeal, came to metanoia, to repentance, and now live the life of the Church, the life of grace? This is well known; we see it. But I would like to point out one more thing: the relationship between soul and body. Does this teaching not reveal it to us? We do not need anyone to tell us.

Yet further testimony is useful, gentlemen. Pay attention: we do not need anyone to tell us, for God Himself tells us. But if additional testimony is offered, it is not useless. This relationship between soul and body has been observed. When a person sins, his soul soon becomes ill, and his body becomes ill as well. When a soul commits various sins—especially carnal sins, or, if you prefer, those very grave sins that belong purely to the soul, such as envy and pride—at some point the soul begins to show the signs of sickness.

And if this condition becomes chronic, then at some point the body too begins to show signs of illness. Doctors can bear witness to this, whatever their various worldviews may be. A doctor may be a materialist and may say that the soul is energy, as I mentioned earlier during the question period. He may say whatever he likes. Yet he will still observe that there is a connection. Whether or not he wishes to acknowledge that the soul exists, there is a connection. When he sees that a person’s conduct affects the health of both soul and body, he will immediately draw conclusions. Therefore, my beloved, let us be watchful. At the very least, let me not become responsible for an illness of my body through my own personal sins.

You may say to me, “But there are also germs.” Yes, the spectrum of illness is broad. Yet at a conference held long ago in Bossey, Switzerland, the following was said: illness is not always merely a matter of whether a germ is present—or absent, when we are speaking of health. Something deeper is involved: the relationship between soul and body, and whether that relationship is harmonious or not. This is a universal truth. It is a universal truth, and we do not need either science or divine Revelation—that is, the Word of God—to tell us so. We see it through experience in everyday life itself.

Nevertheless, he says: “If, then, anyone suffers in his soul through sins, he has the Physician.” If anyone’s soul suffers because of sins, he says, that person has the Physician. “And if anyone is of little faith, let him say to Him here, ‘Help my unbelief.’” If anyone is of little faith, let him say what that father said when he brought his demon-possessed child to the Lord: “Help me in my unbelief.” “And if anyone is beset by bodily ailments, let him not disbelieve, but let him draw near.” If anyone also has bodily illnesses, he says, let him not disbelieve, but let him draw near. “For He heals these as well, and let him know that Jesus is the Christ.”

He heals bodily illnesses as well, for one must know that Jesus is the Christ. We now leave this paragraph. You see that every paragraph of Saint Cyril deals with a particular aspect of the person of Jesus Christ. We now come to another interesting point, paragraph fourteen: “The Jews accept that He is Jesus, but they no longer accept that this same Jesus is also Christ.” The Jews accept, he says, that this person is Jesus—that is, we might say, they accept His historical existence. But they do not accept that this Jesus, the historical Jesus, is Christ: the One anointed and appointed by God for a work, the work of salvation in the sense we have explained. That saving work is not simply to give us food and drink, but to raise us from the dead and save us ontologically, in our very being. This, he says, they do not accept. Pay close attention to this point, my beloved. The Jews, he says, do not accept that the historical Jesus is the Messiah. They accept His historical existence, but not His title—that He is Christ, the One anointed by God, the Savior of body and soul. Incidentally, because there is also a false etymology, I once heard someone here in the audience say...

...that the Messiah is the one who stands in the middle between God and mankind—that the Messiah is in the middle as Mediator. But the word “Messiah” has no connection at all with the word “Mediator.” The word “Mediator” does, of course, appear in Holy Scripture, in the New Testament. Somewhere the Apostle Paul says, “Jesus Christ, the Mediator.” Yes, He is the Mediator, but the title “Messiah” is Hebrew. Connecting it with the Greek word for “Mediator” is a false etymology; the two have nothing to do with each other. “Messiah” comes from the Hebrew Mashiach, which means Christ. The Greek word is Christ, meaning “anointed.” I mention this only in passing. Pay attention, then, because here we have something extremely important, as I explained to you: even today we Judaize. And among our own people, there are not a few who do so.

Among our Christians there are many—especially those who have either read certain things, or been led astray in one way or another, making the evil still worse—who accept the historical existence of Jesus Christ but do not accept the divinity of Jesus Christ. This is an extremely serious matter. Note that in our own time even His historical existence has been questioned. Indeed, this is the first time in two thousand years, in twenty centuries, that the historical existence of the person of Jesus Christ has been disputed. I will not tell you which French encyclopedia it is; let me not say it, so as to avoid certain pitfalls. But it says that He is...

...a person. Yet long before that encyclopedia appeared, already in the previous century, European intellectuals—French intellectuals and others—claimed that He was a mythical figure. You know Dupuis’s excellent response concerning the person of Jesus Christ and whether He is mythical or not. He turns the very same arguments against the adversary. It is worth saying just a few words about it. Of course, what I am about to tell you is not fresh in my memory; I read it decades ago. But I will tell you what I remember. It is well known that the person of Jesus Christ is regarded as mythical...

...not only by atheists, of course, but also by some who are not atheists, such as Freemasonry. Freemasonry regards the person of Jesus Christ as mythical and as a symbol, just as it does with other figures. Take Hiram, for example. Although he is a historical person—and Freemasonry does not deny this—Hiram was indeed a historical figure. He was a Syrian architect who came to Palestine, that is, to Judea, for the building of Solomon’s Temple. Solomon had summoned him. He is a historical person. Yet Holy Scripture tells us nothing more than what I have just told you. Freemasonry, however, turns the matter into a myth.

In short, it gives this figure the symbolism of the sun. Hiram, it says, enters the temple as an inspector. Enemies lie in wait for him. He tries to leave through the western gate, but enemies are there. He goes to the southern gate, but enemies are there. Then he tries to leave through the northern gate, and they kill him. It is symbolism of the sun—symbolism of the sun. This is sun worship through and through, and it refers to the movements of the sun. As is well known, at the winter solstice the sun loses its life-giving strength. Thus, as the sun moves along its winter-solstice course, obliquely in relation to the earth, as I have told you—thank you—

...its rays strike obliquely. At least for us in the Northern Hemisphere; in the Southern Hemisphere, of course, the reverse occurs. Because the rays come at an angle, they do not have the same warming power, and so nature dies. Hiram was killed as he left through the northern gate. They take this historical figure, turn him into a myth, and impose upon him the myth of the sun’s movements. For this is plainly idolatry. My beloved, I will tell you once again: Freemasonry is a religion, and specifically a pagan religion. You should know this. It is a religion, however much they may deny it, and specifically a pagan religion. The moment they introduce a god—and that god is the Great Architect of the Universe—it automatically and immediately becomes a religion. For from the moment a deity is introduced...

...there is religion, for what else is religion? Do you want further evidence, beyond the fact that its god and its worship are introduced? Worship takes place in the Lodge. And since worship exists, this confirms again and again the presence of a religion. You should know this. Pay attention to it. I emphasize it, and I have emphasized it many times. So I say it once again, and I will continue to say it for as long as God grants me the grace. Pay close attention, then. Thus an attempt was made—and this is not a new phenomenon—to turn the person of Christ into a myth. Some therefore deny His historical existence and speak of Him as mythical. A certain Frenchman said that He is the personification of the sun, which is also what Freemasonry teaches.

Here, however, it takes the following form. What is the sun, he asks? It is Jesus Christ—or Jesus Christ is the sun. Which sun? Not the spiritual Sun of Righteousness, but this visible and familiar sun, the one that rises each morning. Over the course of the year, it passes among the twelve signs of the zodiac. These, they say, are Christ’s twelve disciples. What, then, are the disciples? They are the twelve signs of the zodiac. But the sun dies and rises again. Jesus Christ, they say, also died and rose again. In autumn Christ begins to die, and in spring He rises again. There are even articles published at Pascha in newspapers and magazines which do not speak...

...only this year; they are written every year, and they speak of the resurrection of nature. Those of you who write articles will know this. Behind such articles—behind them—lie all the things I have been telling you. Freemasonry and sun worship lie behind them. Yes, these things are there; they truly are. Pay attention, then. This is why the Freemasons also celebrate. They say, “We celebrate two feasts during the year, among the others, at the two equinoxes,” precisely in honor of the sun. Then Dupuis comes along and says, “Gentlemen, I will prove to you that Napoleon the Great was a mythical figure too.” Now, if you please, consider that Napoleon the Great lived only in the previous century.

Go ahead, then: step up to the podium and say that Napoleon the Great was a mythical figure. And yet Dupuis succeeds brilliantly in proving that Napoleon was mythical, using the very same method by which others claim to prove that Jesus Christ was mythical. He begins with Napoleon’s name. You know there is a theory that Napoleon was of Greek descent. I do not know whether you have heard this. According to it, he was descended from settlers in Corsica—Greeks who had left the Peloponnese and settled there.

Napoleon is said to have descended from them, although by then, of course, his Greek origins had faded in matters such as names and so forth. That is what is said; this theory exists. Let it be so—Napoleon the Great belongs to us as well, along with Alexander the Great! Now, my beloved, what does the name Napoleon mean? Dupuis says, “I will tell you what it means: behold Apollyon.” It is well known, he says, that Apollyon is Apollo.

Apollo is Apollyon. That this is truly its etymology, he says, is also stated by John the Evangelist in his Apocalypse. He says “Apollyon,” meaning the one who destroys. Napoleon: “Behold Apollyon,” that is, Apollo. And Apollo, as everyone knows, is the sun god.

Forgive me—the sun, the sun god.

Apollo. Thank you. Thus Napoleon is a mythical figure; he is Apollo. Napoleon, he says, was born on an island in the Mediterranean, Corsica. But Apollo too was born on an island in the Mediterranean, Delos. It is well known that Apollo was worshiped there and that Leto gave birth to him. Apollo even had three sisters, he says, and Napoleon likewise had three sisters. It is also well known that Napoleon reigned in the East and reached the very gates of Moscow.

He died in the West, in exile on Saint Helena. Indeed, my beloved, the sun rises in the East and dies in the West. Conclusion: Napoleon is a mythical figure. Go out and say that, and you will be beaten! Using the same method, then—these are only the details I remember; Dupuis gives many other very fine and clever examples. I have told you what I remember. And I say that those who repeatedly claim that Jesus Christ is a mythical figure are utterly malicious and, of course, utterly inaccurate historically. For one might also ask: what about the phenomenon of Christianity itself? How could a myth ever produce the miracle called Christianity? Could such a thing ever be possible? But let us leave that aside.

Not accepting the historical existence of Jesus Christ is one thing. But accepting the historical existence of the person of Jesus Christ while denying His divinity is an idea that has found wide acceptance among many believers and, unfortunately, has become very widespread in our time. They do not accept the divinity of Jesus Christ, nor His role and title as “Christ”—that is, the One who will save us ontologically, in our very being. Such people, then, are in reality Judaizing. But he says something very important, and those who listen to the Word of God, at least, should pay close attention to it. “For this reason,” says the Apostle. Which Apostle? John the Evangelist.

In his First Epistle: “Who is the liar, if not the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ?” First John 2:22. Who, he asks, is the liar? The liar above all others. This is not the lie I might tell someone to escape punishment or evade the issue. Who is the great liar, and what is the great lie? It is the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ. “And Christ means, first of all, High Priest.” Forgive me; if you wish, I could turn for a moment to the New Testament, but I do not have it with me or readily at hand. No matter. But do you know what Saint John says next? Who is the Antichrist? The one who denies the divine

nature of Jesus Christ. My beloved, let us take heed. Let us take very great heed, because we become instruments of the Antichrist in his great war against Jesus Christ. You deny the divinity of Jesus Christ. To put it more broadly, you may deny either His divinity or His humanity, as Monophysitism does, for Monophysitism is a continuation of Arianism and was described by the Fathers as a forerunner of the Antichrist. Whether I deny the divine nature, as in Arianism, or the human nature, as in Monophysitism, or deny even His very existence by claiming that Jesus Christ is a mythical figure—in whichever form I take it, I become a little antichrist,

an instrument of the Antichrist who is to come. This is not some theological construction; it is what Holy Scripture itself says. John the Evangelist tells us: Who is the Antichrist, if not the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ, that Jesus is God? Such a person, then, is the Antichrist. And now Saint Cyril continues with a beautiful point.

I shall comment on it. Christ, he says, is High Priest, and His priesthood is unchangeable. He did not receive it at some point in time, nor does He have a successor in the high priesthood. “As you heard.” Speakers often address a listener in the singular to make their words more vivid. Obviously, he is not being heard by only one person, but by many. “As you heard.” It is a customary figure of speech to use the singular. I shall explain why. “On the Lord’s Day”—so the day on which he is speaking is not Sunday—“as you heard when we were discoursing at the Synaxis.” Now he uses “we” in the plural, though he is referring to one person, himself. We likewise commonly say “we”

as an expression of humility. In other words, when I was speaking to you at the Synaxis—and here the text even writes the word with a capital S, meaning the ecclesial Synaxis—when I was preaching to you, our theme was: “You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek,” from the epistle reading from Hebrews. This is a beautiful detail. It gives the account a vivid and immediate quality. Indeed, although the liturgical order has undergone many changes, additions, and omissions, its basic form remains the same. First comes the epistle reading, then the Gospel reading, and Saint Cyril had evidently preached on the epistle reading. I mention this only in passing.

“He did not receive the high priesthood through a succession of mortal persons.” It was not through bodily succession, as when one bishop dies and another becomes bishop. Aaron died and his son succeeded him; his son died and was succeeded by the next son, and so forth. Christ received the high priesthood in a different way. “Nor was He anointed with oil prepared by human hands,” but before all ages by the Father—eternally by the Father, by God the Father. And He differs so greatly from all the others that He is made Priest with an oath. Let us look at this a little further on. “For the others are priests without an oath.” All the others, he says, are priests without an oath.

“But He is Priest with an oath, through Him who said,” as God declared: “The Lord has sworn and will not repent.” This appears in Hebrews 7:20 and also in Psalm 109. “The Lord has sworn”—the Lord took an oath—“You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.” He swore it. Saint Cyril then says: “The will of the Father alone would have been sufficient assurance.” In other words, it would have been enough for God simply to will that His Son be High Priest. “But the manner of assurance is doubled, because the oath accompanies the will.” The Father’s will would have been enough, yet He gives a twofold assurance. The Father declares it and confirms it in Psalm 109.

The Jews, my friends, were entrusted with the Psalms, and with the testimony that God gives His word by an oath. This is a twofold assurance. And why does God say it? “So that through two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who embrace faith in Christ Jesus, the Son of God, might have strong consolation.” What are these two inviolable—or, as the text says, unchangeable—things? There are two. God is unchangeable: you cannot say that today He says one thing and tomorrow another. And God’s oath is also unchangeable. You cannot say that today God declares one thing and tomorrow something else. We therefore have two unchangeable things: God Himself says it, and He says it under oath.

You may ask, why am I burdening you with all this at this hour? Why am I troubling you now by telling you these things? Quite simply, so that we may have strong consolation—the word is “may have,” in the subjunctive—so that we may have firm consolation and our faith may be strengthened, knowing that the One in whom we believe, Christ, is true. My beloved, all our concern is simply that we understand that Jesus Christ is true. He has the testimony of the Old Testament; this is no coincidence. As I have told you before, and mentioned recently, Christ Himself set before His accusers Psalm 109 of David: “The Lord said to my Lord,” as I said on an earlier occasion,

“Sit at My right hand until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.” “When this Christ came,” Saint Cyril says in paragraph fifteen, introducing a new subject, “the Jews denied Him, but the demons confessed Him.” What a dreadful thing! This Jesus Christ, he says, who came into the world—

the Jews denied Him, while the demons confessed Him. The conclusion, then, is that their denial was worse than the demons’ confession. And those who deny Jesus Christ are likewise worse than the demons. That is how the matter appears.

“Nor was the forefather David ignorant of Him.” Saint Cyril will now develop this point a little. A little further on, he inserts something which is not unrelated. The forefather David was not ignorant of this Jesus Christ. David, who wrote Psalm 109, said: “I have prepared a lamp for My Christ.” This is Psalm 131, verse 17. “I have prepared a lamp for My Christ.” Who says this? David, as an ancestor, much as a grandfather might say, “I have prepared a splendid inheritance for my grandson.” What is this lamp? Saint Cyril says there are two interpretations. The second, however, is the established one, and this is the one I shall give: “Others understand the lamp to be the flesh assumed from the Virgin, according to the words of the Apostle.”

And then the rest: “We have this treasure in earthen vessels,” and so forth. In other words, the lamp David prepares is the Theotokos, because the Theotokos is descended from David. It is as though David were saying: “I am preparing Your dwelling for You, my Christ, and this dwelling is my own descendant: the Theotokos.” Yet she is a lamp; she is radiant. You know that John the Baptist is also called a lamp. If the Theotokos is called a lamp, then her Son is called the Sun. And if the Theotokos, the Most Holy Theotokos, is called a lamp, what are we to be called? Darkness, gloom, and chaos.

“Nor was the prophet ignorant of Him when he said that he proclaimed His Christ to mankind.” The prophet could not have been ignorant of Him, Saint Cyril says, if he declared that he was proclaiming Christ. Amos is the one who says this. “Moses also knew Him.” Moses knew Him. “Isaiah also knew Him.” Isaiah knew Him. “Jeremiah also knew Him.” Jeremiah too knew Christ. “None of the prophets was ignorant of Him.” None of the prophets failed to know Him. “The demons also recognized Him.” There it is. All the prophets knew Him and spoke of Him, but the demons knew Him as well. How? Listen: “For He rebuked them and did not allow them to speak, because they knew that He was the Christ.” He rebuked the demons. The demons were saying,

“Who are You? You are the Christ of God, the Son of God. We know who You are.” And He rebuked them. Why? So that the demons would not say it. We often see the same thing with His disciples: “Do not tell this to anyone.” Why? Because the work of salvation had to be completed. This is a profound matter, but I shall say only a few words. Since the devil had deceived our first parents and driven them out of Paradise, the new Adam now had to deceive the devil in return. It was as though He said: “You deceived Me as man; now I shall deceive you.” The devil had to be deceived.

How was this deception to be accomplished? In many ways. One of them was this: the prophecies had to remain veiled, so that the devil could not interpret them. When Christ’s sacrifice, the Crucifixion, was completed, then the light of the prophecies would be revealed, and no prophecy would remain veiled. I have said this in only a few words. Saint Cyril continues: “The chief priests were ignorant of Him, but the demons confessed Him.” This is tragic. The chief priests were those entrusted with the Law and the prophecies. What did Herod do? When Herod heard from the Magi that the King of the Jews had been born, he understood that this concerned

an expected king foretold by the prophets—Christ. He summoned the chief priests and scribes and asked them: “Where is the Christ to be born? Tell me; interpret the prophecies for me.” And those wretched men knew the prophecies. “In Bethlehem of Judea,” they answered. This indicated not only the place but also His lineage, because Bethlehem was David’s ancestral city. Their answer therefore declared two things: the place and the royal lineage. Did those wretched men go there to see? They did not. Just think of it, my beloved. They did not go. They prophesied correctly and theologized correctly, yet they would not take the trouble to go there. This is dreadful!

Dreadful indeed. Because the chief priests would not take the trouble to go there, they ultimately appeared ignorant of who Jesus Christ was. Yet the demons confessed Him. “The chief priests were ignorant of Him, but the Samaritan woman proclaimed Him, saying: ‘Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Can this be the Christ?’” The chief priests condemned Christ and claimed not to know Him. Pilate—pardon me, Caiaphas—said: “I adjure You in the name of the Blessed One, God. Tell us: are You the Christ?” And the Lord replied: “You have said it.” It is as you say. Then that wretched chief priest, Caiaphas, tore his garments.

He cried: “What blasphemy!” Why is it blasphemy, man? Did you not place the accused under oath so that He would confess to you who He is? He has confessed it to you. For, if you wish, God willed that there should be testimony from the high priest. The high priest was the guardian of the ancestral faith. He therefore acted rightly in placing the Lord under oath. And here you see that an oath is needed only in matters of the greatest importance, not in everyday affairs. He says: “I adjure You.” And the Lord replies: “It is as you have said.” I accept the oath you have laid upon Me, and I answer you: “Yes, I am the Son of God, the Son of the Blessed One whom you invoked and in whose name you placed Me under oath.”

That is what He said. The Lord also added Daniel’s prophecy: “And you will see Me coming on the clouds of heaven,” and so forth. Then Caiaphas tore his garments and declared that the Lord had blasphemed. What Caiaphas did deliberately is what I was telling you about, my beloved, in yesterday’s homily: an evil disposition, a deliberate distortion of the truth. It is a dreadful thing. It is the sin of those near death. Dreadful. Tradition does not tell us how Caiaphas ended his life, though it does tell us how Pilate’s life ended. But the One whom the chief priests failed to recognize was recognized by the Samaritan woman. She was half-pagan, because the Samaritans were half-pagan. And what did she do?

When the Lord reveals to her that she has no husband, that the man she now has is not her husband, and that she has already had five husbands—only this, nothing more—this woman is deeply shaken, because she is a person of good will. She is sinful, but her conscience and her inner disposition have not been corrupted. She is sinful. The Lord reveals this to her, and she hurries to tell her fellow townspeople, “He told me who I am and what I have done. Could this be the Christ, the Messiah?” And she enters into a profoundly theological conversation with the Lord. Not even Nicodemus, the teacher of the Law, when he began speaking with the Lord, spoke with Him at such length as this Samaritan woman did. It is astonishing. She immediately enters into the theology of the matter. After He told her who she was and about the five husbands and all the rest, she says, “Lord, tell me something.” She has a theological concern. A woman living in prostitution, yet with a theological concern! “Tell me, where must we worship God? On Mount Gerizim, which was in Samaria, or in Jerusalem, in the Temple?” Do you see her concern? And there the Lord says, “I assure you, neither there nor here, because God is worshipped everywhere. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and in truth.” And this woman—please open the Synaxarion and read her life—was named Photini. She is Saint Photini. Her entire family became holy; they became Christians and stood firm as martyrs.

What a difference between one person and another—between Caiaphas and the chief priests on the one hand, and the Samaritan woman and those who followed on the other! My dear friends, what an astonishing thing our inner disposition is! The demons will not be saved, although they recognize Him. If, then, this is how things stand, the whole universe—not worldwide merely in the sense of the earth, but throughout all creation; I said it wrongly: the universe, for that is what “universe” means. But how can I emphasize it? Let me say it again: the entire universe, the whole family of creation, you understand. But how shall I put it? All creation, the visible and invisible worlds, confesses who Jesus Christ is. Both human beings and demons confess who Jesus Christ is.

As for those who do not confess Him, leave them in God’s hands, that He may illumine them and have mercy on them. Those who truly desire to be saved believe in the person of Jesus Christ, having the sure testimony of history and Holy Scripture. Then, through their own experience, they sense within themselves the presence of Christ; they can almost touch it, and they live beneath the shelter of His love.

Αυτός είπε. Και μάλιστα προσθέτει και την προφητεία του Δανιήλ ο Κύριος: «Και θα με δείτε ερχόμενον επί των νεφελών του ουρανού», και λοιπά και λοιπά. Και ο Καϊάφας ξεσχίζει τα ρούχα του και λέγει ότι εβλασφήμησε ο Κύριος. Αυτό που τώρα ο Καϊάφας ηθελημένα, είναι αυτό που σας είπα, αγαπητοί. Αυτό που σας έλεγα χθες στην ομιλία: η κακή προαίρεση, αυτή η θελημένη διαστροφή της αληθείας. Φοβερό πράγμα. Είναι το αμάρτημα των προσθάνατων. Φοβερό. Η παράδοση δεν μας λέει τι τέλος είχε ο Καϊάφας. Τι τέλος είχε ο Πιλάτος, μας αναφέρει η παράδοση. Όμως, αυτόν που οι αρχιερείς αγνοούν, η Σαμαρείτισσα γυναίκα, αυτή που ήταν μισοειδωλολάτρισσα, γιατί οι Σαμαρίτες ήσαν μισοειδωλολάτρες, αυτή τι κάνει;
