Summary

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem teaches that the disciples perceived Christ’s divine glory at the Transfiguration only according to their limited capacity, not the divine essence itself. The desire for divine vision must be joined to purification, humility, ascetic struggle, and dependence upon God’s gift, lest spiritual ambition lead to pride and deception. The lecture concludes that the Son possesses divinity by nature rather than by seizure, is consubstantial with the Father, and is the Lord through whom God creates, reveals Himself, and guides His people.

Beloved, last time, as we continued with Saint Cyril’s Tenth Catechetical Lecture, which concerns the article of the Creed, “I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God,” and so forth, we discussed the seventh paragraph. There we saw that no one can ever have a vision or image of the Godhead apart from the divine uncreated energies—that is, the divine glory. Saint Cyril says here that even at the Transfiguration...

there was a manifestation of the divine glory in Christ’s human body, and even this the disciples could not behold in its fullness. They saw only according to their capacity—as much as they could bear, as much as it was possible for them to see. And if this was so with the human nature of the Son, he says, how much less could anyone ever behold the divine essence—the essence of God, the Godhead itself? One can behold only, of course, the divine uncreated energies. Without going deeply into this vast subject, which gave rise to many disputes and successive Synods, and whose principal defender was Saint Gregory Palamas, there is a distinction between the essence of God and the divine uncreated energies of God. This distinction is essential and important, because Western theology said that no one can see God, while the East maintains that we can see God. That was the heart of the whole dispute and, as you understand, it is a crucial question: Can I see God, or can I not? The Saints, ascetics, and monks of the East said that they saw God, and this seemed very strange indeed. There were, moreover, arguments on both sides. “No one has ever seen God”—there is one argument: no one has ever seen God; “no one can.”

On the other hand, we read, “We shall see Him as He is,” and, “I saw God, and my soul was preserved,” and so forth. How are these apparently contradictory passages—apparently contradictory passages of Holy Scripture—to be reconciled? Saint Gregory Palamas gave the answer, and it is thoroughly Orthodox, thoroughly scriptural, and thoroughly patristic. Saint Gregory Palamas based his teaching on nothing but Holy Scripture and the Fathers of the Church. And what did he say? Both are true. The divine essence is invisible and cannot be beheld, utterly and unto the ages of ages, by any creature, however exalted that creature may be—whether angels, archangels, cherubim, or seraphim. No one ever knows the essence of God; only God knows Himself.

“The Spirit of God,” it says, “searches even the depths of God.” Therefore, the Spirit is God. Otherwise, how could He search the depths of God? And do you know what the depths of God are? The essence of God. The Spirit of God searches the depths of God because He is God. And the Son knows the Father. He knows Him essentially—that is, He knows the essence of the Father—because He is consubstantial with the Father. But this is not possible for us. Yet we can know God and see God; and one day we shall see Him even with our bodily eyes, just as this can happen even in the present life. We shall not see the essence of God—for, as we have said, that is impossible—but the divine uncreated energies of God, which in this case are the divine glory. That is the whole point.

There is a distinction between the essence of God and the divine uncreated energies of God—His divine glory. This is what Saint Cyril means. You see, Saint Cyril is early; he belongs to the fourth century. Saint Gregory Palamas, by contrast, belongs to the fourteenth century—the thirteenth century, the fourteenth. Forgive me, the thirteenth century, somewhere around there. You see, sometimes one confuses many things.

Well... Saint Gregory Palamas inherited the Patristic Tradition, so he would not say anything different. Yet, as you will now see in Saint Cyril, there are some remarkable things here—very remarkable indeed. We shall dwell on one point that he mentions: precisely how someone can see God and yet, at the same time, know nothing of the essence of God.

Afterward, he will demonstrate to us that Jesus Christ, the Son, is with the Father and is at work in the Old Testament. This is exceedingly valuable, whether we must answer Jews or heresies of Jewish origin, such as millenarianism and the like. So, what does he say?

“They saw His bodily countenance shining, not to the full extent of what He who was acting could manifest, but according to what the disciples could bear. It filled them with fear, and even so, they could not endure it.” They could not endure the radiance of Christ’s human face, which was suffused with this divine glory, this divine uncreated energy. How, then...

“Could anyone gaze upon the majesty of the Godhead?” How could anyone gaze, we might say, upon the majesty of the Godhead, or upon the essence of God? It is impossible. “You desire a great thing, O Moses,” He says. “Nevertheless, I accept your insatiable desire, and I shall grant what you ask—but only according to your capacity. Behold, I shall place you in the cleft of the rock; for being small, you shall remain within narrow bounds.”

You ask for and desire a great thing, He says. Your desire is good, and I shall accept your insatiable longing and do what you ask of Me—but only as much as you can receive. See, I shall place you in that opening in the rock. Small as you are, you will remain there “within narrow bounds.” This is both because you cannot receive very much and because it is not possible for Me to reveal anything more to you. Pay attention. We are dealing here with something wondrous. This is written by Moses in the Book of Exodus, chapter 33. “You are a friend of God.” Lord, You have called me Your friend.

Moses was called a friend of God—a privilege. Perhaps you will say, “What a privilege, to be a friend of God.” Beloved, we too have this privilege in the New Testament. In the Old Testament it was certainly a privilege; we might even call it a unique privilege. In the New Testament, whoever wishes may possess it. See how Christ says it: “You are My friends.” When? “If you do whatever I command you.” If you put into practice what I tell you, you are My friends. You see? But let us remain with the privilege given in the Old Testament. You tell me that I am Your friend, yet You have never revealed Your face to me. You have not let me see who You are, although two friends should share

fellowship and mutual knowledge. You see me, but I do not see You. Reveal Yourself to me, then. And God says to him: You desire a great thing; your longing is insatiable. Of course, such desires for more are beautiful, we might say, but a person must have the proper spiritual conditions before desiring more. For if someone has this desire without those conditions, he will very quickly fall into spiritual deception; and instead of seeing God, he will see the devil. Let us take careful heed of this. If someone has not purified his heart, if he has not attained purity of heart and undertaken spiritual struggle and ascesis—ascetic discipline—then it is better that he not even ask for such a thing. This is a gift from God. For if he persistently demands it without having purified his heart, might there not be pride hidden deep within him? I say again, do not tell me that Moses was proud here. No.

If Moses had been proud, God would not have appeared to him. But we must purify the heart, and we cannot be certain how far it has been purified. We should say: If God should ever wish to show me His face—His glory—that is His concern; I do not ask it of Him. Besides, it does not trouble me. To remain safe, I shall see Him in the life to come. This position I am describing to you has been taught by all the Saints, all the great and eminent spiritual Fathers. So be it. And I shall do what you ask, God says, but take heed: I shall place you in that opening in the rock, a small cave, and you will go inside it. I shall pass before you. This means that one’s field of vision from an opening—and imagine that I am inside that opening—is limited because, as you know, the deeper I go...

into an opening or a cave, the narrower my field of vision becomes. That is perfectly natural. Thus Moses had a narrow field of vision. I shall pass by, God says. But while I am passing, I shall place My hand over that opening, and you will see nothing. Once I have passed, I shall remove My hand from the opening, and then you will see My back.

This description is not childish; on the contrary, it is majestic. I shall read to you something that I once happened to come across: what Saint Gregory the Theologian says about this in his Second Theological Oration. He is speaking about theology. I shall first give you the original text—I shall read it quickly—and then offer a brief translation.

“Sheltered by this rock, which is God the Word (Logos), who became incarnate for our sake, and peering out a little, I did not behold the primal and unmingled nature, which is known to itself alone—I mean, to the Holy Trinity.” He says: I did not see the first nature; I saw the second. The first is the essence, and the second is the divine uncreated energy. Notice: the first nature is the essence, and the second is the divine uncreated energy. I have said it twice. “Nor did I behold that which remains within the first veil and is concealed by the cherubim, but only that which is last and reaches even to us.” The second is what reaches us and can be perceived by us. “This is, as far as I can understand, the majesty manifested in created things and in all that He has brought forth and governs”—or, as the divine David calls it, His magnificence. “For these are the back parts of God.”

These are the back parts of God: “the manifestations that come after Him, just as shadows and images of the sun upon the waters faintly reveal the sun to weak eyes, since they cannot look directly at the sun itself, whose pure light overwhelms the sight.” But what happened to me? “O friends and initiates, fellow lovers of the truth!” I was striving to comprehend God, to grasp Him, to understand Him, to apprehend Him. So I ascended the mountain and passed through the cloud that Moses had entered. I withdrew from matter and material things and gathered myself inwardly as much as possible. Yet when I raised my eyes, I barely managed to see the back of God, His back parts. And even this...

was under the shelter of the rock—that is, of the Word (Logos), who became man for our sake. What are the back parts? The Incarnation. The Incarnation is the back of God. And after bending forward slightly, I saw not the primal and unmingled nature, which is known only to itself—the essence of God, for only God knows Himself—that is, the Holy Trinity, which remains within the first veil and is concealed by the cherubim. Instead, I saw the outer manifestation, which reaches even us. Such is this distinction. You see how Saint Gregory Palamas draws upon Saint Gregory the Theologian and, as I told you, upon all the Fathers. Saint Gregory Palamas teaches nothing new. He is a theologian faithful to Tradition.

He teaches what his predecessors—and their predecessors before them—said and what they discerned in the Word of God, Holy Scripture.

As far as I understand, what I was able to know was the majesty. And what is this majesty? It is the back of God—or, as the divine David calls it, the magnificence revealed in the created things that God made and governs. Those with weak eyes see the shadows and images of the sun on the surface of the waters, because the sun’s pure light would destroy their sight if they looked directly at it. In the same way, we know the back of God—that is, His traces, and so forth. This, then, is how you will speak of God, even if you are Moses and a god to Pharaoh. Moses, you know, was called...

Moses was called “a god to Pharaoh.” And even if you are Moses, a god to Pharaoh, this is how you will theologize. You will go no further than Moses did, or beyond what was revealed to Moses. In other words, my beloved, you see here that the “back” of God is nothing other than the traces of God. In the Old Testament, it is the majesty of God seen in the creatures upon which He has set His seal. You know that creation was brought into being—or rather, it is not the essence of God that creates, but His divine uncreated energies. To put it another way, the essence of God has no direct contact with material creation. Yet God creates the material world, the angels—for the angels too are creatures—

human beings, everything, the entire universe, through His divine uncreated energies. Through His energies He creates all things. What, then, do we see here? A human being can know God by knowing His divine uncreated energies: His glory, His majesty, the traces of God. But, as I told you, the “back” of God also means the Incarnation. This is why Christ said, “He who has seen Me has seen the Father.” The disciples, of course, were perplexed: “Show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” Yet he who has seen Me has seen the Father—that is, “I and the Father are one.” But how is this shown, and where? In the “back” of God: in the Incarnation.

For our purpose is to prove that the Lord Jesus Christ is with the Father. The purpose, he says, is precisely to prove this, so that we may be protected from the largely blasphemous claims of the Jews—or, as we would say today, of the millennialists—that the Son,

Jesus Christ, the Lord Jesus Christ, is and was with the Father. This is what the Evangelist John says: “In the beginning was the Word.” The Word already was. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” This is precisely what Saint Cyril says we shall demonstrate and prove. This point is exceedingly valuable. To make it concrete for you, the millennialists hold a position whose implications, strangely enough, they themselves do not understand: they accept Jesus Christ as a creature. And we either fail to understand this or are unable to show it to them. Pay attention. They say:

Jesus Christ is not Yahweh. Yahweh is the God of the Old Testament, and He is one. But if we prove to them that Jesus Christ is the Yahweh of the Old Testament, then there can be no further objection, and their arguments are literally swept away as groundless and blasphemous. Of course, you may ask, will they be convinced? In the end, if someone argues in bad faith, that is not what matters to us. What matters—and I believe this is where the greater importance lies—is that we instruct our faithful so that they are not led astray and, God forbid...

if heretical teachings have already shaken them inwardly, they may understand the truth and become firm again. Our purpose, therefore, is to protect the flock, not so much to bring the heretics back—unless God works His miracle in such a corrupted soul. For do not forget: if a person’s soul has not become corrupted but he has simply been led astray, he can be saved. But if he has become corrupted, then he cannot be saved. This is why the Apostle Paul says, “Such a person is perverted.” “After a first and second admonition,” he says, “reject a heretical man,” knowing “that such a person is perverted.” He has turned aside; something has happened to him; he has left the path, cast off restraint, and changed. It is a terrible thing and, if you will...

it is the sin leading to death of which the Evangelist John speaks in his First Epistle. And, if you will, this is the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit that remains unforgiven: this refusal to repent, this persistence in error and heresy, this insistence upon heresy until I die and depart this present life still holding it. This is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, and it means that I will never, for all eternity, be saved. Never, never, never. Therefore, my beloved, let us take heed. Many are led astray into heresy. Let us take great care to preserve the flock of Christ and keep it from being led astray. This, Saint Cyril says, is our purpose. He then gives another two or three examples, drawn, of course, from Holy Scripture.

He says: “What did the Lord say to Moses? ‘I will pass before you in My glory, and I will call upon the name of the Lord before you.’ Being the Lord, which Lord does He call upon? Do you see how, under a veil, He taught the devout doctrine concerning the Father and the Son? And again, immediately afterward, it is written word for word: ‘And the Lord descended in a cloud and stood with him there, and called upon the name of the Lord. And the Lord passed before his face and proclaimed: “The Lord, the Lord, compassionate and merciful, longsuffering, abundant in mercy and true, preserving righteousness and showing mercy to thousands, taking away lawlessness, injustice, and sin.”’ Then, a little farther on, ‘Moses bowed down and worshiped before the Lord who calls upon the Father, and says...’”

“Go with us, Lord.” This most important passage makes up the whole of the eighth paragraph. It refers to the time when Moses ascended Sinai to receive the Law. There the Lord says—you know whom the word Lord denotes in the Hebrew language; we have said it many times—“What did the Lord say to Moses?” What did Moses’ Lord say to him? “I will pass before you with My glory, and I will call”—pay attention—“I, the Lord, will pass before you with My glory, and I will call...”

“upon the name of the Lord before you.” I, the Lord, will invoke the name of the Lord. Do you understand? I, the Lord, will pass before you with My glory and invoke the name of the Lord before you. Does that seem to make sense? Listen to what Saint Cyril says here: “Being the Lord, which Lord does He call upon?” Since He Himself is the Lord, which Lord is He calling upon? When He says, “I, the Lord, will pass before you and invoke the name of the Lord before you,” who is this Lord? This means, then, that there is also another Lord. Of course, that is precisely the point:

the Son, who is Lord, calls upon the Father, who is Lord. Do you understand? This is extremely important, because otherwise the statement, “I, the Lord, will invoke the name of the Lord,” makes no sense. How could that be? Would He invoke Himself? “Before you,” He says, “I will invoke the name of the Lord,” which means that there is another Lord. Therefore, if the One speaking there invokes the name of the Lord, it is the Son who is speaking at Sinai, my beloved. The Law was given by Yahweh: Yahweh, the Lord, the Son. It was not the Father who gave the Law, but the Son, because He was the Word, the Word of God. And He gives the word that is written upon the tablets of the Law. Thus we see here, in a marvelous way, one Lord speaking of another Lord. And what does Saint Cyril say? “Under a veil, He taught the devout doctrine concerning the Father and the Son.” He taught this doctrine of true piety concerning the Father and the Son in a veiled manner. This is exceedingly important—exceedingly so. At the end, he says that Moses fell down in worship. And before whom?

Before the Lord who was speaking to him, who speaks in the name of the Lord—in the name of the Father, as I told you. Therefore, to whom does Moses address himself? To the Lord who is the Son. In the same way, to whom did Abraham speak when the Holy Triune God appeared to him? He spoke to the Father, because the Son and the Holy Spirit, the other two persons, went down to Sodom in the form of two angels for what was to follow. I spoke to you about this before. So what does Moses say here? “Go with us, Lord.” Lord, go with us. Where should He go with them? Through the wilderness. Where else should He go?

Through our life. Where else? Throughout the whole history of Israel. Be the One who journeys with us. Who is this? The Son. And indeed, this Lord heard Moses’ prayer, his appeal and supplication that He would go with them, and He did journey with them. He is the rock that followed them. He is the cloud, the pillar of cloud that accompanied the people and gave the signal: Here we shall stop and camp; and then the signal: Now we shall leave this place and move on. And when the time appointed by God came—what the Apostle Paul calls the fullness of time—

this fullness of time, which is a profound Mystery, then the Father sends the Son. Then, as it says, “the Father sent forth the Son into the world.” What does this mean? It means that the Son is once again the One who journeys with His people, but now in human nature. Paragraph nine reads: “You have this as the first proof; now receive a second, clearer one.” I have given you the first proof, he says; now receive one that is still more explicit: “The Lord said to my Lord, ‘Sit at My right hand.’”

You recognize this as the famous Psalm 109, whose authorship unquestionably belongs to David. The whole Hebrew tradition maintains that it is David’s. Moreover, when people questioned who the Lord Jesus Christ was—seeing only His human nature and being unable to accept His divine nature—the Lord Himself appealed to this psalm. The Lord Himself says that David spoke “in the Holy Spirit.” Therefore, the psalm’s authorship is Davidic. The Jews, in any case, never doubted that this psalm was David’s. I point this out because there are psalms that are not by David.

Not all 150 Psalms are by David. Most are, but not all. Yet take note: every one of them is divinely inspired. Do not imagine that all the Psalms are not divinely inspired. They all are. David’s authorship matters here because David is an ancestor of Christ according to the flesh, and it is the ancestor who prophesies. This is extremely significant. The Lord therefore asks the Pharisees and the people there—especially the Pharisees, who were the theologians of that time—and the scribes: “Who do you say I am? I will tell you.” David says, “The Lord said to my Lord, ‘Sit at My right hand until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet,’” and so forth. You say that the Messiah is a descendant of David. Correct.

If the Messiah is a descendant of David, then the ancestor is greater. An ancestor cannot be less than his descendant, because from the bodily, human point of view, I am not greater than my father, my grandfather, or my great-grandfather. I am less, for I am their descendant. Therefore, if the Messiah, David’s descendant, is only a man—only a man—how can David call this descendant of his “Lord”? This means that He is both: He is David’s descendant according to His human nature,

and at the same time He is God according to His divine nature. Thus, through this psalm, the Lord gave the answer for ever and ever. One of the great facts—and I have told you this many times—is that the text of the Old Testament is zealously preserved without the alteration of a single letter by the enemies of the Gospel, so that no one can claim that Christians changed it. The unbelieving Jews are, so to speak, these zealous guardians of the Old Testament. Thus we cannot be accused of having arranged the words of the Old Testament ourselves to make them fit our teaching.

“The Lord said to my Lord.” Here, then, one Lord speaks to another Lord. Who is He? Saint Cyril continues: “The Lord says these things to the Lord, not to a servant.” One Lord speaks to another Lord; He does not speak to a servant, but “to the Lord of all.” And the second Lord is not merely Lord in a general sense. He is the Lord of all, “to whom He subjected all things.” This is none other than His Son, to whom the Father has subjected everything. He is therefore truly the Lord of all, the Almighty.

Let us continue: He is the Lord of all. “But when it says that all things have been subjected to Him, it is evident that He who subjected all things to Him is excepted,” and so forth, “that God may be all in all.” The Only-Begotten Son is the Lord of all, the Son begotten of the Father. Take note that the words I just quoted, “that God may be all in all,” are spoken by the Apostle Paul in First Corinthians 15:28. The Only-Begotten Son is the Lord of all, the Son begotten of the Father. He did not receive lordship by seizing it, but possesses it by nature. He did not seize divinity in order to be God. This is what the Epistle to the Philippians says: “He did not consider equality with God a thing to be seized.”

He does not possess divinity by seizure or theft; He possesses divinity by nature, from His very own nature. That is what “having received it naturally” means here: by nature. “For neither did the Son seize it, nor did the Father begrudge sharing it.” Neither did the Son seize it, nor did the Father begrudge it. Neither one nor the other, because the essence is one, while the persons are two. The Lord: the Father is Lord, and the Son is Lord. “It is He who says, ‘All things have been handed over to Me,’” and so forth. So what do we see here in this argument, my dear friends? An unshakable argument, as I told you. It is the one argument—let us call it the only one for the moment—in which the Lord answers the question of His identity.

“Who am I? I refer you to Psalm 109. That is who I am. I am both God and man.” This is a powerful argument. He then proceeds to a third argument, in paragraph 10: “Therefore, the Son of God is the Lord. The One born in Bethlehem of Judea is the Lord, according to what the angel said to the shepherds: ‘I bring you good tidings of great joy, for today Christ the Lord has been born for you in the city of David.’ Concerning Him, one of the Apostles says elsewhere: ‘The word which He sent to the sons of Israel, preaching peace through Jesus Christ—He is the Lord of all.’ And when he says ‘of all,’ exclude nothing from His lordship, whether angels or archangels.”

Whether principalities or powers, or any other created beings named by the Apostles, all are subject to the lordship of the Son. He is Lord of the angels, as you read in the Gospels: the devil departed from Him, and the angels came and ministered to Him. It does not say that they helped Him, but that they ministered to Him, serving Him as servants. When He was about to be born of the Virgin, Gabriel served Him, receiving the honor of performing this ministry. When He was about to go into Egypt, to destroy the man-made idols of Egypt, once again an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream. When He had been crucified and had risen, an angel proclaimed the good news and, like a faithful servant, spoke to the women.

“Go, then, and bear witness that I gave you this command; I have told you. Thus, if you neglect it, the blame will not fall upon me, but upon those who were negligent.” Thus, he says, there is one Lord Jesus Christ, of whom today’s reading also speaks: “For even if there are many who are called gods, whether in heaven or on earth,” and so forth, “yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things, and we are for Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and we through Him.” I read the whole passage to you so that I might have some freedom in presenting it and in drawing out the main points of this paragraph. The Lord, then, he says, is the Son of God. He is the One who was born in Bethlehem of Judea. How did the angel...

How does the angel describe to the shepherds the One who was born in Bethlehem? “I bring you good tidings,” he says, “of great joy, for unto you—yes, unto you—is born this day in the city of David Christ the Lord.” That statement alone, my beloved, would require a great deal of time to explain. But let us say just a few words, so that we may gain a most precious insight. What did the angel call the One who was to be the Savior of the world? What did he call Him? Listen: Christ the Lord. What does “Lord” mean? It signifies His divine nature.

What does “Christ” mean? It signifies His human nature. We know that in the Old Testament there are many “christs of the Lord.” Please notice the grammatical construction: “christs” is plural—“the christs,” “of the christs,” “the christs,” “christs of the Lord.” That is, they are christs who have been anointed by the Lord. But here it does not say that the One who was born is “Christ of the Lord”; it says, “Christ the Lord.” This means that He is not anointed by someone else in order to come into the world, although, of course, He is the Christ of the Father. Here, however, the purpose is to exalt and emphasize His divine nature. It says, “Christ the Lord,” meaning that He Himself is God, while as Christ He also possesses human nature: He is the One anointed by God the Father for a great mission. That mission is the salvation of the world. Please reflect on this point. David was a christ, a christ of the Lord, because he had been anointed with the customary oil. Solomon was a christ. Saul, the first king of the Hebrews, was a christ. The high priests were christs of the Lord. As I told you on a previous occasion, when David was urged to kill Saul—Saul, who had been pursuing David and at one point fell into his hands—Saul...

Saul and his companions say, “Here is your chance—kill your enemy.” But David says, “Kill the Lord’s Christ, His anointed one? Never.” Do you see? And the priesthood in the New Testament is the same, because the priest is anointed to the priesthood. We are christs of the Lord—anointed ones—but you too are christs of the Lord. Did you not receive Chrismation? Then you too are christs of the Lord. All of us, when we came out of the baptismal font—that is, when we were baptized—became christs of the Lord, because we were anointed with the gift of the Holy Spirit; we became christs of the Lord, anointed ones. Here, of course, Christ is, we might say, Christ...

in the absolute sense of the word—not for some particular purpose or some particular plan of God. Rather, it is Christ who bears the great message of the Father, the Angel of Great Counsel: the salvation of mankind. And of course, He is also the Savior of the angels—not of the fallen angels—and the One who renews the whole creation. What do we see here? In the word “Christ,” we see that He is man; in the word “Lord,” that He is God. Would you like something more? The Lord is neither born nor dies, because He is God. Yet here it says, “Christ was born to you.” To you...

The words “was born” undoubtedly refer to His human nature. Do you want something more? “Today.” As I have told you many times, Christianity is not something vague, nebulous, merely ideal, or idealistic. Christianity is not idealism. It is not idealism. Pay close attention to this point—pay attention. You know that idealism stands at the opposite extreme. I want you to keep this firmly in mind: Christianity is a reality. God enters into history; God becomes man. It has absolutely nothing to do with idealism—nothing at all, not to mention the Church...

The Church condemned idealism in the person of Origen. Never, ever forget that. A Christian is not an idealist. A Christian is a Christian and has nothing whatsoever to do with all the products and contrivances of human invention, and so on. And above all, it says “today”—not yesterday or tomorrow, but today. These are concrete realities. Who, then, is this One who was born? He is Christ the Lord, man and God. That is, He is truly man. And now it says—

In the Acts of the Apostles: “Concerning Him, one of the Apostles says elsewhere.” One of the Apostles says elsewhere—in Acts—quoting the Old Testament: “The word which He sent to the children of Israel, preaching peace through Jesus Christ.” Who is this Word who is sent? The Word (Logos) is sent by the Father. The Word is the Lord. And to whom is He sent? He is sent to the Hebrews. He is sent—the Word to whom all things are subject, the Word who became man, who is Jesus Christ. Angels, archangels, principalities, powers, and everything that exists are subject to Him.

Do not forget that this teaching exists. It is not new; it is ancient. The Chiliasts keep repeating, like someone chewing gum, that Jesus Christ is a created being and an angel. They misinterpret the title “Angel of Great Counsel,” seizing upon the word “angel,” and they distort other passages as well. They misinterpret them—completely. And they say that He is the Archangel Michael. They utter many other blasphemies too. But look at what Saint Cyril says here: He is the Lord of the Angels, the Lord of all the Angels. And further on he says, “He is the Lord of Angels, as you have it written in the Gospels.” He is the Lord of the Angels, just as it is written in the Gospels. For when, he says, the devil departed—in the wilderness, where he had been tempting the Lord—

The angels came and ministered to Him. “You see,” Saint Cyril says, “they did not come to help Him; they came to serve Him, and to serve Him as servants.” When He was about to be born of the Virgin, the Archangel Gabriel served Him. You see? He serves Him. When He was to go into Egypt—there is a brief little phrase—“that He might overthrow the man-made idols of Egypt.” We see this in the Akathist Hymn, which says that when the idols saw You, they fell as You entered Egypt. I will say no more about it. This, of course, is what is implied. And what is the source of this?

When He went there, an angel again appeared in Joseph’s dream and told him, “You shall go there,” because the angel serves the work of the Son. When He was crucified and rose again, an angel once more came to the women as a good and faithful servant. And what did he say to the women—and concerning the disciples, forgive me? “Go and tell the disciples that He has risen and is going ahead of you into Galilee; there you will meet Him.” And there is a delightful little observation here. Pay attention: the angel says, “See, I have told you.” In other words, if you do not go—and in fact they did not go, take note—they truly did not go.

Did they go? This is not the time to discuss that. We have spoken about it before, and I do not want to go into too many extensions and digressions. Um... They did not go. And what does the angel say? “There the Lord will meet you,” he says, “in Galilee.” But since they did not go, Jesus Christ condescends and appears, my dear friends, on the first day—the Lord’s Day—toward evening. It was not evening—it was not evening, forgive me; that was not in the evening. He appeared to the disciples, just as He did to the two on the road to Emmaus, because they had no intention of going to Galilee. But what does the angel say here? “Behold, I have told you.” See, I told you. As a servant, I am absolved of responsibility,

so that I may not be called to account. How, then, could the angel speak in this way if Jesus belonged to the order of the angels? Rather, this means that He is the Lord of the angels.

7

Only the main points, my dear friends, because otherwise we will not finish the catechesis of Saint Cyril even after five years. “Jesus Christ is called by two names: Jesus, because He saves, and Christ, because He exercises the priestly office. Knowing this, Moses, that divinely inspired prophet, bestowed these two titles upon two of the most eminent men. He renamed Auses, his successor as leader, Jesus; and he gave his own brother Aaron the title Christ. Thus, through two eminent men, he foreshadowed both the high-priestly and the royal offices of the one Jesus Christ who was to come.”

For Christ is High Priest according to the order of Melchizedek, since He did not glorify Himself by making Himself High Priest. Rather, it was the One who said to Him, “You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.” Joshua the son of Nun prefigured Him in many ways. When Joshua began to lead the people, he began at the Jordan; likewise, after Christ was baptized, He began to preach the Gospel. The son of Nun appointed twelve men to divide the inheritance, while Jesus sent the twelve Apostles throughout the whole world as heralds of the truth. Joshua, who was the type, saved Rahab the harlot because she believed; but Jesus, the true fulfillment of that type, says, “Behold, the tax collectors and the harlots go into the Kingdom of God before you.” In the time of the type, the walls of Jericho fell at nothing more than a shout; and because Jesus said, “Not one stone shall be left here upon another,” the temple of the Jews opposite us has fallen. It was not the pronouncement itself that caused it to fall—

“But it was the sin of the transgressors that caused it to fall.” He says here that Jesus Christ has two names. He is called Jesus because He saves. You know, as I have told you before, the Hebrew name Jesus means “Savior”—like the name Sotiris used today. If I may put it that way, Sotiris means Savior, that is, Jesus. And He is called Christ, the Anointed One, because of His priestly office. In other words, Jesus Christ has two offices here, as Saint Cyril tells us: the royal and the priestly—and, of course, the prophetic as well, as we know. But what Saint Cyril wishes to say here now is...

Saint Cyril wishes to say much more. For this reason, he says, Moses—the prophet above all, the great prophet—takes two men who will serve as types. This, then, is a typological interpretation of the Old Testament that helps us understand the New. He takes two distinguished persons. One is Hoshea, whom Moses renamed Joshua. He is the well-known Joshua son of Nun. He was the one who received, we might say, civil and military authority—that is, the royal office. You know, the term “king” has a broad meaning. Today we chant, “Save, O Lord, Your people,” and, “Grant victories to the kings over the barbarians,” though we change those words. That is not correct. In Greece, changing them is generally forbidden. “King” does not mean one particular monarch or another, but whoever governs at the time. It is now an established term. Some people are scandalized when, at the blessing of water, we say, “Save, O Lord, Your people; grant victories to the kings.” No, my beloved, let me explain this to you. It is an established term, meaning the person or persons who, as the Apostle Paul says, are “in authority”—that is, whoever governs. Today it may be the president of a republic, or whoever else. The point is that, in this broad sense, he is the king, the ruler, and therefore holds the royal office. Moses also takes his brother Aaron, whom he anoints as high priest.

Aaron was the first high priest. These two offices, he says—the high-priestly and the royal—were shown typologically in these two persons, but were destined to be united in one person alone, Jesus Christ. Joshua son of Nun represents the king; Aaron, the high priest, represents Christ, the Lord’s Anointed. Thus Jesus Christ is the Great High Priest and the Great King. Of course, because the Covenant was to pass from the Old to the New, the priesthood also had to be changed. For this reason, Christ is not a priest according to the order of Aaron, but according to the order of Melchizedek. This is a profound subject, but now is not the time to discuss it. In this way, he says, both Joshua son of Nun and Aaron served as types of Jesus Christ.

There is something more. When Joshua son of Nun assumed civil and military authority and crossed the Jordan, he divided the whole land of Canaan into twelve portions: twelve inheritances for the twelve tribes of Israel. Christ, Saint Cyril says, chose twelve Apostles and sent them throughout the whole inhabited world. Joshua son of Nun saved Rahab the prostitute, an inhabitant of Jericho. Joshua was the typological figure—the type of Jesus Christ—and he saved her in the familiar way you know: she was spared by the Hebrews when they entered the city, and so forth. Unfortunately, time is running on. But the true Joshua, Jesus Christ, saves tax collectors and prostitutes from sin.

He says that they go before you and enter the Kingdom of God ahead of you. Jericho, he says, fell with a great shout. But the true Joshua, Jesus Christ, said of the Temple, “This Temple will be destroyed, and not one stone will be left upon another.” Saint Cyril says this while giving his catechesis in the Church of the Resurrection, with that Temple standing opposite them. Not one stone would remain upon another—and indeed, at that time, not one stone stood upon another. Here Saint Cyril uses typological interpretation, showing not only prophecy but also type and fulfillment, in order to demonstrate that all of Holy Scripture, the entire Old Testament, speaks of the Son who is with the Father: the Father is Lord, and the Son is Lord.

And, to conclude, the Holy Spirit is also Lord: the one holy Triune God.

Κατόπιν θα μας αποδείξει ότι ο Ιησούς Χριστός, ο Υιός, είναι παρά τω Πατρί και ενεργεί στην Παλαιά Διαθήκη. Αυτό είναι τόσο πολύτιμο, είτε έχουμε να αντιμετωπίσουμε Εβραίους είτε έχουμε να αντιμετωπίσουμε αιρέσεις που έχουν εβραϊκή προέλευση, όπως είναι ο χιλιασμός κλπ. Λοιπόν, τι λέγει;

«Εἶδε τοῦ σώματος πρόσωπον λάμψαν, οὐ καθὸ ἠδύνατο ὁ ἐνεργῶν, ἀλλὰ καθὸ ἐχώρουν οἱ μαθηταί· ἐφόβησεν αὐτούς, καὶ ὅμως ἐνεγκεῖν οὐχὶ ἠδυνήθησαν». Δεν μπόρεσαν να υποφέρουν τη λάμψη του ανθρωπίνου προσώπου του Χριστού, που ήταν διάχυτος από αυτή τη Θεία Δόξα, τη Θεία Ενέργεια. Πώς;

ο Υιός Κύριος επικαλείται τον Πατέρα Κύριον. Το καταλάβατε; Είναι πολύ σπουδαίο, γιατί δεν βγαίνει κανένα νόημα ότι εγώ ο Κύριος θα επικαλεστώ το όνομα του Κυρίου. Πώς είναι δυνατόν; Ο ίδιος τον εαυτό του θα επικαλεστεί; Εγώ, λέγει, μπροστά σου θα επικαλεστώ το όνομα του Κυρίου, που σημαίνει είναι κάποιος άλλος Κύριος δίπλα. Εάν λοιπόν αυτός που ομιλεί εκεί επικαλείται το όνομα του Κυρίου, σημαίνει ότι είναι ο Υιός ο οποίος ομιλεί, αγαπητοί μου, στο Σινά. Τον νόμο τον έδωκε ο Γιαχβέ. Ο Γιαχβέ, ο Κύριος, ο Υιός. Δεν έδωκε τον νόμο ο Πατήρ, ο Υιός, γιατί αυτός ήταν ο Λόγος, ο Λόγος του Θεού. Και αυτός δίδει τον λόγο που γράφεται επάνω στις πλάκες του νόμου. Ώστε βλέπει κανείς εδώ, πολύ θαυμάσια, να λέγει ο Κύριος κάποιον άλλον Κύριον. Και τι λέγει; «Ἐπικεκαλυμμένως ἐδίδασκε τὸ εὐσεβὲς περὶ Πατρὸς καὶ Υἱοῦ δόγμα». Σκεπασμένα εδίδασκε αυτό το δόγμα της ευσεβείας περί Πατρός και περί Υιού. Είναι λοιπόν πάρα πολύ σπουδαίο αυτό. Πάρα πολύ. Στο τέλος λέγει ότι έπεσε να προσκυνήσει ο Μωυσής. Και λέγει σε ποιον;

Στον Κύριο που του ομιλεί, ο οποίος ομιλεί εν ονόματι του Κυρίου, εν ονόματι του Πατρός, σας είπα. Συνεπώς, σε ποιον αποτείνεται ο Μωυσής; Στον Κύριο που είναι ο Υιός. Όπως ακριβώς σε ποιον ομιλεί ο Αβραάμ όταν ενεφανίσθη ο Άγιος Τριαδικός Θεός. Ομιλεί στον Πατέρα, διότι ο Υιός και το Πνεύμα το Άγιον, τα δύο πρόσωπα, υπό τη μορφή δύο αγγέλων, κατέβηκαν στα Σόδομα διά τα περαιτέρω. Σας το έλεγα μια περασμένη φορά. Τι λέγει εδώ λοιπόν ο Μωυσής; «Συμπορεύθητι δή, Κύριε, μεθ' ἡμῶν». Κύριε, να συμπορευθείς λοιπόν μαζί μας. Πού να συμπορευτείς; Στην έρημο. Πού αλλού να συμπορευτείς;

Στη ζωή μας.

οι άγγελοι προσήλθαν και τον υπηρετούσαν, διηκόνουν αυτώ. «Βλέπεις», λέει ο Άγιος Κύριλλος, «δεν ήρθαν να τον βοηθήσουν· ήλθαν να τον υπηρετήσουν και να τον υπηρετήσουν δουλικώς». Όταν επρόκειτο να γεννηθεί από την Παρθένον, υπηρετούσε ο Αρχάγγελος Γαβριήλ. Βλέπεις; Υπηρετεί. Όταν ήθελε να πάει στην Αίγυπτον —μία μικρή φρασούλα— «ίνα καταλύση τα χειροποίητα της Αιγύπτου». Αυτό το βλέπουμε στον Ακάθιστον Ύμνο, που λέει ότι όταν σε είδαν τα είδωλα έπεσαν, όταν πήγες στην Αίγυπτον. Δεν θα σας πω πιο πολλά. Αυτό βεβαίως υπονοείται. Και από πού είναι η πηγή του;
