Summary
Saint Cyril teaches that Christ’s many scriptural titles reveal the actions and attributes of the one incarnate Logos in his divine and human natures. The name “Jesus” signifies the Savior who leads God’s people into the Kingdom, fulfilling what Joshua prefigured by leading Israel into the Promised Land. Although Christ is called Son, Lord, Jesus, Door, Vine, Lamb, Mediator, and High Priest according to humanity’s needs, every title belongs to the one undivided person of Jesus Christ.

My dear friends, as we continue with Saint Cyril’s tenth catechesis and come to its fourth paragraph, we return to where we left off: the explanation of the various names or titles of Jesus Christ. A title is a name. Saint Cyril, then, examines the various titles of Christ. And, of course, these names of Jesus Christ are nothing other than His attributes.
Some refer to His divine nature and others to His human nature. These attributes define, so to speak, the identity and portrait of Jesus Christ: who Jesus Christ is. Thus we have seen why He is called Son, Shepherd, Door, Lion, Stone, and so forth. As Saint Cyril says, “The One spoken of is one, unless you impiously divide the many-named character of His divine uncreated energies among many sons,” and so on. By “the many-named character of His divine uncreated energies,” he means the characteristic actions of the incarnate Word (Logos), each expressed by a particular name. These are the names of Jesus Christ.
They are exceedingly numerous in both the Old Testament and the New Testament—a great multitude of names—because the actions of the incarnate Son of God are also many. And I remind you, of course, that I am presenting an explanation of the Creed, following Saint Cyril, and we have reached the article: “And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God.” Saint Cyril now says: “He is called the Son of Man, not because He received His birth from the earth as each of us did, but because He comes upon the clouds to judge the living and the dead.”
In the Word of God, the Son is called the Son of Man. Of course, we must not say that the Son of God, as the Son of Man, received His birth in the same way that we receive ours. It is well known that “Son of Man” is a principal name, just as “Son of God” is. We might even say that these are among His most important names. If we had to retain only two or three from the multitude, they would be these: the Word (Logos), the Word of God; the Son of God; and the Son of Man.
These are the principal names. “Son of Man” means man, while “Son of God” means God. When we say “Son of God,” we mean that He possesses the essence of the Father and therefore is God. When we say “Son of Man,” we mean that He is the son, or child, of a human being and therefore is man. This expression, “Son of Man,” is Hebrew. In Hebrew usage, a descendant belonging to a particular kind is described as “a son of” that kind. Thus, when speaking of a human being, they say “son of man.” God Himself very often addresses a prophet as “son of man”; in other words, He is saying, “O man.”
You were born of human beings: that is what it means to be human. A similar expression is used of animals. The Lord says, “He sits upon a donkey’s colt, the foal of a beast of burden.” Notice this phrase. He sat, it says, upon a colt—a donkey’s colt, not a horse’s—“the foal of a beast of burden,” meaning the offspring, the young of that beast. A beast of burden is an animal that we yoke for work, and so forth—but I am going into too much detail. Thus the expression “Son of Man” means one who comes from a human being, that is, one who possesses human nature one hundred percent. If this were not so, the Evangelists would not have given what follows, among many other reasons, including the one we are discussing now.
Both the Evangelist Matthew and the Evangelist Luke give the genealogy of the human descent of Jesus Christ: “Abraham begot Isaac,” and so forth; “Isaac begot Jacob,” and so on. We see, then, that Jesus Christ is one hundred percent man, in the fullest meaning of the word “man.” Of course, if we were to dwell on the title “Son of Man,” we would have to address a great many subjects, some of which now lie beyond my own competence and knowledge. This title, “Son of Man,” is an immense subject. “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?” the Lord asks His disciples. What do people say about Me, the Son of Man?
It is an immense subject—truly immense. We would need hours to speak about this title. But I think this is enough, as Saint Cyril himself often says: enough for us to know what we must know in order to be saved. Saint Cyril now says here: Take heed. I too, as a human being, am called a son of man, but this Son of Man certainly did not receive His birth as all of us did. Moreover, this Son of Man is the One who comes upon the clouds and judges the living and the dead. Where does Saint Cyril take this from? My dear friends, he takes it from Matthew, who records it because the Lord drew it from Daniel when He was questioned by Caiaphas.
Caiaphas was the guardian of the Jewish deposit of faith. As high priest, he was obliged to preserve the faith and the ancestral religion intact and pure. Up to this point, Caiaphas acts correctly in his capacity as high priest: “Tell us, tell us, are You the Son of the Blessed? I adjure You to tell us the truth.” This action of Caiaphas was proper; it was his duty, and this was how he ought to speak. What followed was wrong. His question was right, since he was the guardian of the ancestral religion; but once you receive the confession...
Caiaphas, you placed the accused under oath. You said, “I adjure You.” You made Him swear: “Tell me the truth.” He told you the truth. Now that He has told you the truth, why do you tear your garments in utter hypocrisy and say, “You have heard the blasphemy”? What blasphemy? Was this not why you placed the accused under oath—to learn who He is? So what are you saying now? These are strange things, my dear friends. But what did the Lord present to Caiaphas as His answer? He did not merely say, “You have said it.” Does “You have said it” not mean, “It is as you have said”? In other words, “What you have said is indeed true.” That is the meaning of “You have said it.” But the Lord adds something else, something very important.
If Caiaphas and the whole council had sat down and studied this, oh, what conclusions they might have reached! “Nevertheless,” He says, “I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man”—there is the title—“coming upon the clouds of heaven.” You will see the Son of Man, that is, a man, coming upon the clouds of heaven. Here the Lord speaks on the basis of Daniel. I will tell you what Daniel says, for this concerns His Second Coming. Daniel says the following:
“One like the Son of Man, coming upon the clouds of heaven,” came, he says, as far as the throne of the Most High God.
Daniel sees—Daniel beholds—the Ascension of Christ. “I saw,” he says, “one like the Son of Man.” Yes, “like.” That word “like” does not deny His human nature. It means that the word “man” does not exhaust the reality, because He is also God. That is what Daniel means: one like the Son of Man. This is not the same as when we said that the Holy Spirit came like a dove. It is not the same case, because the Holy Spirit appeared in the likeness of a dove without being a dove. Here, “like the Son of Man” means that the reality is not fully expressed by saying that He is only man. He came upon the clouds of heaven and reached the Ancient...
of Days. This is what God is called: the Ancient of Days. What is happening here? It is the ascent of the Son’s human nature, reaching Heaven and coming to the Father. This is what Stephen sees during his stoning. And what does the Protomartyr say? “I saw Jesus standing at the right hand of the glory of God.” That is it. Thus Christ speaks about what Daniel saw, but with the movement reversed. Recall now Matthew, chapter 25—not at the beginning, but a little farther on: “When the Son of Man comes in His glory, with the holy angels...”
The Son of Man comes—do you see? It does not say “the Son of God.” It says “the Son of Man,” meaning that He will come as man. Just as He was taken up with His human nature, so He will come again with that same nature. I remind you of what we discussed in our Sunday talks: the Ascension of Christ will be the sign and pattern of His Second Coming. What did the two angels say? They told the disciples and the others who were standing there: “In the same manner as you saw Him ascend, so you will see Him descend and return again.” Here, then, we truly have the human nature of the Son as the Son of Man, and He comes as Judge of the living and the dead. Yes, He will not judge human beings merely as God; He will judge them as man.
People might say: “You judge us as God, but we lived as human beings. Do You not think there is, so to speak, a difference in standpoint—a distance between You and us? How can You know us? Have You lived in human nature, so as to know what weakness means and what suffering means?” The Epistle to the Hebrews says, “He suffered” and “learned from what He suffered”; that is, He learned through experience. God does not experience human things; He knows them in divine knowledge, but not through lived human experience. Thus He learned—that is, He acquired direct experience—from what He suffered. He thirsted, hungered, endured hardship, and felt pain upon the Cross.
Then it says: “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses.” We do not have a high priest who cannot understand what we undergo. Why? Because He took on human nature. It is therefore a great thing that the Son of God is also the Son of Man. A tremendous thing—truly tremendous! This is why He comes as man to judge the living and the dead. He could say: “I judge you not as a person foreign to your nature, but as One who shares it, because I know what man is. I know man from experience, because I already bear human nature and have lived among you.” Here, then, is one name: the Son of Man. I have said quite a few things about it, and I earnestly ask you to hold firmly to this name, this title: the Son of Man. It is of great importance!
The next name: “He is called Lord, not in the derivative sense in which we are, but because He possesses lordship naturally and eternally.” He is also called the Lord in the absolute sense, not by a loose use of the word, but by His very nature as God. His lordship is everlasting and eternal. He is truly the Lord. When God appeared to Moses...
He said, “My name is Lord.” You know that it was not the Father who appeared to Moses, but the Son. Many Fathers interpret this appearance of God, of Yahweh, in this way. Yahweh means “Lord”; Yahweh means “Lord.” We have said this before. Many Jehovah’s Witnesses say, “You do not use God’s name.” What is that name? Yahweh. Very well, but Yahweh means “Lord.” The Gospel was written in Greek and uses the title “Lord.” It would be like insisting that Chinese, Japanese, and African peoples must also pronounce the Greek word Kyrios. But they will naturally use the translated word. They will speak the name in translation. The fact that it appears in Greek is entirely natural.
The absolute proof is that the sacred writers of the New Testament, writing the Gospels in their original form—and the epistles as well, such as those of Paul—do not record the word “Yahweh” even once. Not once. Why? Quite simply, because they translate it. They do not write the name in Hebrew; they write “Lord.” That is a different matter. Do you understand how foolish the Jehovah’s Witnesses are? Do you see it? Do you understand? Yet we may use the name Yahweh, without thereby being labeled Jehovah’s Witnesses, especially in apologetic argument against heretics. You say that Yahweh is the Father, but that the Son is not Yahweh—that is, that He is not the Lord. We can prove to you—and there is abundant evidence throughout both the Old Testament and the New Testament—that Jesus Christ is Yahweh; that is, He is the Lord.
The Father is Lord, the Son is Lord, and the Holy Spirit is Lord. That is why, when we come to that point, we say, “And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of Life,” and so forth. “And in the Spirit, the Lord.” Pay attention: every word in the Creed is weighed with tremendous care. Do not think that calling the Holy Spirit “Lord” is redundant. For the Holy Spirit truly is Lord—that is, God, Lord in the absolute sense. In the same way, then, the Son is Lord, and He possesses the lordship of which Saint Cyril speaks here, an eternal lordship. So when He appeared to Moses, He said to him, “My name is the Lord.” And He says, “I did not reveal this name of Mine, Lord, to your forefathers, to Abraham; to them I revealed My name as God.”
“To you, I reveal it as Lord.” And when this Lord became incarnate, He revealed to us His final name: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This is the last name of God to be revealed in history, and there will be no further revelation, either in this present age or in the age to come. This is the final revelation concerning the name of God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Let us continue. Another name is Jesus. Indeed, He received the name Jesus through the angel, who spoke to Joseph.
The angel did not appear to the Theotokos (God-bearer) to reveal the name, although everything else concerning Jesus—who the One to be born would be, and so forth—was told to the Theotokos. But the name was now revealed to Joseph because, in the eyes of the law, he was regarded as the father; and according to the Law, the father gave the child his name on the eighth day and also arranged for the circumcision of his male child. So you see that the angel appeared to him and said, “You shall call His name Jesus.” Jesus. I shall complete Saint Cyril’s phrase: “He is called Jesus, bearing a name that corresponds...”
“...to His saving and healing work.”
The angel said to Joseph, “You shall call the Child’s name Jesus.” Why? Because He will save the people. In Greek, the corresponding name would simply be Sotiris or Sotirios, meaning “Savior.” That is what Jesus means: Savior. In Hebrew, however, the name is Jesus. Joshua son of Nun, who bore this same name, was a type who prefigured Jesus Christ—not only in name but also in his work. Yet he was only a type, because Joshua son of Nun led the people of God into the land of Canaan, the Promised Land; Moses did not.
Joshua son of Nun did.
This is not accidental. God arranges these things in this way. You know, of course, from Holy Scripture why Moses did not enter during that intervening period. But Joshua son of Nun—that is, Joshua, the son of Nun; this is what “Joshua son of Nun” means—was the one who led the people of God into the land of Canaan. He was a type, prefiguring that Jesus would lead the people of God into the Kingdom—that is, into the true Promised Land, which is the Kingdom of God. Joshua too is called a savior. Why? Because he brought the journey of the Hebrews to its completion—or rather, forgive me, he fulfilled the purpose of their journey, their exodus from Egypt. How did he bring it to completion? The people came out of Egypt and did not remain in the wilderness, but finally entered the Promised Land.
Jesus, then, is the One who brings man to his final purpose, which is salvation: entry into the Kingdom of God. Only Jesus; no one else. Pay attention: only Jesus. The Apostle Paul says that there is no other name by which we may be saved. Under heaven there is no other name: the name Jesus. This is what will save us—that is, Jesus Christ Himself. But let us examine something about this name, Jesus. Saint Cyril says, “He bears a name corresponding to His saving and healing work.” His name reveals what He will be.
That is what it means for a name to correspond to the one who bears it. But pay attention; let me clarify something here, in case a question has arisen.
Matthew notes that Isaiah had written that His name would be Emmanuel. He interprets it in Greek as “God with us”—God is with us. Yet the angel says, “Jesus.” Someone who did not study Holy Scripture attentively might imagine that there is a contradiction, even within the Evangelist’s own account. On the one hand, the prophecy gives the name Emmanuel; on the other, we now have the name Jesus. Is this contradictory? No, my dear friends. The difficulty is easily resolved. Emmanuel...
This too is a title, a name expressed as a phrase, for it truly is a descriptive phrase, even in Hebrew usage, if I am not mistaken. It means—perhaps the final letter lamed is involved; I do not know Hebrew, let me make that clear—but I suspect that the final lamed in Emmanuel is related to the names Eli and Elohim, whose root refers to the name God. Emmanuel means “God with us.” It is therefore a descriptive phrase: God with us. This name does not conflict with Jesus, because it is a prophetic name expressing what the One who is to come will be: He will be God. Since it says “God with us,” it means that He will be God who wills to be with us. And if God is with us, He will also be our Savior. Therefore, to say Emmanuel is also to say Jesus. Ultimately, they mean the same thing. The difference is that Emmanuel, as I have explained, is a prophetic name, whereas Jesus is His historical name, not a prophetic one. Yet in their deepest meaning, the two are identical.
He is called by another name: Son. “He is called Son, not because He was promoted to that rank, but because He was begotten by nature.” He is called Son, not because He was promoted. Pay close attention to that word, “promoted.” It is very important. The Church dealt extensively with this point during the so-called Christological controversies. “Not by adoption.” This means that He did not become the Son through an act of adoption; He was not promoted to the status of an adopted son. We are adopted sons.
We are children of God by grace. By grace—that is, through adoption. The Father adopts us. We, therefore, are adopted; He acknowledges us as His children. This means that we do not come from the essence of the Father. We were not begotten of God the Father. Our essence has no relation whatsoever to the essence of God the Father. He acknowledges us as children, whereas the Son of God is from the essence of the Father and is not an adopted Son. Therefore, His place in human history is set apart from ours by His very nature. Now pay attention to how the Lord Himself expresses this distinction. If you ask me where this is written, I will tell you: when the Lord rose in the Resurrection...
He said to the myrrh-bearing women, “Go and tell My brethren that I ascend to My Father and your Father, to My God and your God.” Please notice the distinction. We shall encounter this passage again; as I told you, it is very precious in Saint Cyril, but it is useful to us here as well. “To My Father and your Father.” Tell My disciples that I ascend to My Father and your Father. What does this mean? The Son’s relationship with the Father is one thing, while humanity’s relationship with God the Father is another. What is the Son’s relationship? His relationship is by nature.
Our relationship is established by adoption, by being granted the status of children. My dear friends, after all I have told you about the Son, I might ask in passing: is this detailed examination of the names of the incarnate Son of God—Jesus Christ, our Lord—perhaps needless for us and useful only to theologians?
Is it merely theology for its own sake, something theologians can keep digging into? No, no—for God’s sake, no. My dear friends, once I learn all these names of Jesus Christ, how greatly they can help us in practical life! We must finally understand that dogma is neither a museum piece nor a matter of literary study.
It is not material for theologians merely to occupy themselves with, so that they may quarrel, debate, pass the time, or construct an academic discipline around it. Dogma marks out the boundaries of the believer’s practical life. These are, of course, doctrinal teachings. But what could be more practical than knowing what Jesus means, what Son of God means, what Christ means, or what it means that the Son is the Stone, the Lion, and the One who was dead: “Behold, I became dead, and behold, I am alive”? All these things are of tremendous importance for the believer’s life, for practical Christian living. So let no one say that we are merely indulging in needless detail here, as though this were barren and fruitless.
Those who neither understand nor know are the ones who speak of barren discussions and fruitless lectures or homilies. No! There is fruitfulness here, there is practical value, there is worth. Let me continue and close this parenthesis. We, then, are adopted by God the Father; we are not begotten of God the Father by nature. The Son alone possesses this natural begetting. But I told you that Saint Cyril’s word “promoted,” from the verb “to advance,” is very important. The heretics, of course, seized upon a passage from Luke. I mentioned it to you before, during the time set aside for questions.
Jesus “advanced”; He grew and increased in age and wisdom, and the grace of God was upon Him, and so forth. Pay attention! The heretics interpreted this advancement to mean that Jesus was merely a man who happened to undergo a kind of development, like an illiterate person who learns to read and write. Listen: he advances. He did not know letters, and then he learned them. Or he was uncultured and then became civilized—he began eating with a knife and fork, whereas before he had devoured his food with his hands.
As I said, such a man learns to read and write when before he did not know how; he becomes wise when before he was not. That is what it means for a human being to advance. But was Jesus once sinful and then became holy? Jesus was always Saintly. Jesus always possessed knowledge; He never needed to attend school. What did His fellow townspeople say? “How does this man know letters, having never studied?” How did He learn, since He never attended school? “Where did this man get this wisdom?” His wisdom did not come through gradual progress or promotion; it was always present. Why?
Jesus did not become man by a process of advancement, as we might say, in order to save us. He was always God, and He became fully man. Therefore, He was not promoted, nor was He later acknowledged by the Father as having now made some progress—as though He were holier today than He was yesterday. Jesus undergoes no such advancement whatsoever. He is always the same. He was not, then, promoted. “Therefore, lest the many names by which He is called lead you to suppose that there are many sons—because of the errors of the heretics, who say that Christ is one, Jesus another, the Door yet another,” and so forth, the faith safeguards us in advance.
“And in one Lord Jesus Christ.” “For though the names are many, the subject is one.” Do not imagine that, because there are many names, Christ is one person, Jesus another, the Son another, and so on. No, no. Here the faith comes to safeguard you through everything we are now hearing, Saint Cyril says, so that you may confess: “In one Lord Jesus Christ.” The subject of all these names is one. The person to whom all these names belong is one; there are not many. You may ask, could we ever really believe that Jesus is one, Christ another, and the Son yet another? Let me remind you briefly, without wishing to complicate matters further, of the Gnostics—for Saint Cyril is speaking here about heretics—who
more or less claimed, my beloved, that between God and created beings there stood the so-called thirty aeons. According to the Gnostics, however, these aeons were persons. And these persons—or rather, these supposed persons—were Wisdom, Jesus, Christ, the Door, the Stone, and so forth. Thus, between the heavenly Father and the creatures of the earth, these thirty deities supposedly stood as intermediaries. Does this horrify you? Why have I told you this? I have told you for the sake of history, so that you may know what has been
conceived here on earth, what has been said, and all of it concerning the person of Jesus Christ. And why has all this happened? Because human pride is always present: we want to invent things for ourselves and interpret them by ourselves, without the Spirit of God who dwells within the Church. This is where a person ends up when he tries to interpret outside the Church, outside the divine Tradition of the Church, outside her Fathers, and outside the Holy Spirit. Do not be surprised at all. I have told you this for the sake of history. And now we come to the fifth paragraph. “The Savior becomes different things to each person, according to what is beneficial. To those who need great gladness, He becomes a vine. For those who need to enter, He stands ready as the Door.” He stands ready as the Door.
“For those who need to offer their prayers, He stands as Mediator and High Priest. Again, for those who have sins, He becomes a sheep, that He may be sacrificed for them. He becomes all things to all people, while Himself remaining by nature what He is.” The Savior, he says, becomes whatever each person needs for that person’s benefit. When He wishes to give gladness, He is called the Vine, because wine brings gladness, joy, and delight. If someone wishes to enter the Kingdom of God, He becomes the Door. If I need to offer my prayers to God, He becomes Mediator and High Priest. If I need my sins to be forgiven,
He becomes the sheep sacrificed to make atonement for my sins. For all these things, for every need, Jesus becomes all things. Yet He does so “while Himself remaining by nature what He is.” He remains eternally who He is: the one person. The one person. What, then, are these names? What do these different designations point to? Some refer to His natural attributes, such as “Son.” Others refer to the roles He assumes for the sake of the divine economy of our salvation. What a great thing this is! What a great thing! Thus we have this variety of names, each expressing what it signifies, as I have been explaining all this time. Thank you.
“Possessing in truth the unalterable dignity of Sonship, He is truly Physician and Teacher, condescending to deal compassionately with our weakness.” What is this unalterable dignity? That He is the Son. The Son. As I have told you, this is one of His immutable names: Word (Logos), Son, and man insofar as He is man. “He is truly Lord, not having received lordship through advancement.” He truly is the Lord, Saint Cyril says. He did not acquire His lordship by advancing, by being promoted, as we said earlier, “but possesses the dignity of lordship by nature.” It is not because He progressed in virtue and God then gave Him authority over all things.
“Glorify Me with the glory which I had before the world existed”—before the world was created. He is the pre-eternal, everlasting God, the Word (Logos) of God, my beloved. We pray, my beloved, that through all we are saying we may come to recognize Him. These teachings are nothing other than marks by which we recognize Him—marks of recognition. Then faith is truly established. “And He is not called lord improperly, as we are.” He is repeating what was said earlier, as you can see. Do not forget that Saint Cyril delivered these teachings orally. If there are repetitions, it is because spoken teaching naturally includes repetition. His aim was not rhetorical elegance, but to establish the catechumens firmly in the knowledge of the faith, just as we too follow the
same method, as you understand, according to our own measure—not merely to make our talk pleasing, but to establish the knowledge of God firmly within you. “For we exercise lordship over people equal in dignity to ourselves,” and so forth. “But with our Lord Jesus Christ, lordship is not like this: first He is Creator, and then Lord. First He made all things by the will of the Father, and then He exercises lordship over the things made by Him.” First, Saint Cyril says, He becomes Creator and then Lord. We might say that these occur simultaneously, though one follows from the other. The moment He creates something, He is also its Lord. This is important—extremely important. In the same way, when I build a house, I am at once its lord and master. What does this mean? Thank you.
What significance does this have for us? From the moment God made the world, He is the Lord of all things. But could He perhaps be the Creator without being the Lord of all? Certainly. How could that be? Imagine, my beloved, that God said to us: “My beloved children, human beings, I created you with great wisdom and great love, but I am not almighty. Therefore, I feel for you, I love you, and I have compassion on you, but I cannot help you, because I am not almighty; I have no lordship.” Could you imagine such a thing? Or imagine the opposite:
that God possessed lordship but had no love and no compassion. Then the power of God would be displayed, but not His loving-kindness toward humanity. What a dreadful thing that would be! Both are present in God: His power and lordship over all—for there is nothing over which God does not exercise authority—and His loving-kindness toward humanity. Both are present. If you ask me, “Does He also exercise authority over the devil?”—without question. Let me emphasize this a little. Deep in the minds of people, even of our faithful, there is an idea that the devil is another god. Holy Scripture does indeed call him “the god of this age,” but this does not mean that he is another God.
It does not mean this in the philosophical sense, as though he were eternal and immortal and, like night and day or light and darkness, the two fought forever, with neither light overcoming darkness nor darkness overcoming light, as Persian dualism might claim. The devil, my beloved, is not God in that philosophical sense. He is simply a created being. By God’s permission—because God wills to permit it, and in this way to give us an answer concerning that profound and incomprehensible mystery of freedom—God allows him to act. But things will not remain this way forever. Remember the book of the Apocalypse. Yet why turn to the Apocalypse?
Why not turn instead to the words of Christ in the twenty-fifth chapter of Matthew? Speaking of sinners, He says that eternal punishment—eternal Hell—was prepared not for you, but for the devil and his angels. “Go away,” He says. “Depart from here; go into the outer fire prepared for the devil and his angels.” Since eternal Hell awaits the devil and his demons, this means that he is not God. For if he were God, he would struggle endlessly against his opposite, the good God. This is the dualism found in all philosophical systems and all ancient religions. All of them! But there is no dualism here. There is none. Therefore, God is almighty and sovereign over all; and in this matter, the Father is Lord, the Son is
Lord, and the Holy Spirit is Lord—equally Lord. We do not have three Lords; we have one Lord. This is the mystery of the Holy Trinity, which I want to help you approach and understand. To express it mathematically: one plus one plus one equals one. This is the mystery. And now we come to the sixth paragraph. “Christ the Lord was born in the city of David. And do you wish to know that, together with the Father and even before His Incarnation, He was Christ the Lord? Then you may not merely accept what is said by faith, but may also receive proof from the Old Testament.”
The angel called Him this—forgive me—the angel
who proclaimed the good news to the shepherds on the night of the birth of Jesus Christ: “Christ the Lord; for unto you is born this day a Savior, who is Christ the Lord, in the city of David.” First of all, the words “this day,” followed by “in the city of David,” place us so naturally within the historical setting of time and place! Look, I will say it once more: “Unto you is born this day a Savior.” This day—that locates it in time. And where?
In the city of David, he says—in Bethlehem. It was called “the city of David” because David was born there. You see, then, that the coming of the Son of God is a coming within a specific time and place. These are concrete realities. We are not dealing with a myth. We are not dealing with a philosophical myth. No. These are concrete realities. Today, today! Do you want proof? Then go now—now, now! Here is the sign, the sign: you will find a child who has been born and is lying in a manger. Why is this a sign? Because, you might say, it is extraordinary for a child to be born in a stable. It is a sign. And you will see that this is the sign given to you. So today, now, now, now, in the night—go and see Him. There is the specific place. You see, then, that here we have
the event situated fully within history. We could not call it an “event” if it were not situated in a definite time and place. We could not. The faith is an event; the coming of the Son of God is an event. But let us also consider His identity. Many people throughout history have been called saviors—many. “Who is Christ the Lord.” A Savior has been born for you. There have been many saviors. But who is this Savior? Here is His identity: Christ the Lord. Do you know to what the title “Christ” refers? To His human nature. Do you know to what “Lord” refers? To His divine nature. Why does “Christ” refer to His human nature? Because He is the one who was anointed; He was anointed by the Father. Every savior
in the narrow and limited sense was an anointed one. Notice carefully: he was anointed either by God or by human beings—or, more precisely, either directly by God or by God through a human being. For example, a high priest did not prophesy unless he had received this anointing, this chrism—that is, unless he had been anointed with the oil of ordination. The king was anointed. David, as king, prophesied because he was anointed by Samuel. God willed Samuel to anoint David.
What did all these figures do? This is their succession, my beloved. Before David, Samuel anointed Saul, the first king of the Hebrews, always with the purpose that they should serve as saviors. Saul, for example, was to fight the surrounding enemies and liberate Israel. But he disobeyed something Moses had commanded in the wilderness, that they should destroy certain enemies of theirs, and he fell from the kingship because God rejected him: he had failed to be a true christ, that is, a savior. The anointed one did not prove faithful to the anointing he had received. David came in his place. What did David do? He waged wars and expanded his dominion.
They are called saviors, but saviors only in a limited sense. A doctor who heals me is my savior, but in a limited sense. Someone who gives me money when I have none is my savior, but in a limited sense. And someone who pulls me from the sea after I have fallen in and cannot swim is also my savior, in a limited sense. Therefore, the words, “Today a Savior has been born for you,” do not tell us very much by themselves. They do not give us the essential mark identifying who this Savior is. What does? That He is Christ the Lord. These are the two great and decisive marks. Christ means that He is man, and that He is the one anointed.
Where was Jesus Christ anointed? By the Father. In what way? Listen to this. When Christ was baptized, the voice of the heavenly Father was heard, and the Holy Spirit appeared in the form of a dove. What did the Father say? “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” And on Mount Tabor: “Listen to Him.” Therefore, He is the one sent by the Father into the world—the one anointed, that is, Christ. This is what Christ means: the one anointed for a particular work. What work? Salvation. But in what sense? In the absolute sense. For Christ, as the Apostle Paul says, is also the Savior of the body.
He is not only the Savior of my soul, but also of my body, of my whole existence—and not only of me, but of the whole creation. For when Christ comes again—and notice that the foundation of this is Christ’s human nature, the leaven of our humanity that ascended into heaven—when Christ comes again, this does not mean that the foundation will be laid at that time. It has already been laid, as I told you; it will simply be revealed. His coming means that it will be revealed. “Behold, I make all things new.” Therefore, He is the Savior in the absolute sense, because He is the one anointed and appointed by God.
The title “Christ” refers to His human nature, because it was in that nature that He came to save us. Then comes “Lord.” The title “Lord” refers to the divine nature, because no one is Lord except God alone. Thus the angel’s words are exact, profound, and deeply theological. We might say that this phrase of the angel contains the whole Gospel in condensed form, as its summary. In our own words today: Christ—His human nature, anointed for a specific purpose; Lord—His divine nature. In other words, the divine and human natures united in the God-Man, Jesus Christ. I will not go any further in demonstrating this.
There is not enough time. But I will close with something else. In the few words that follow, Saint Cyril shows precisely how the Son appears in the Old Testament. How does He appear? The Son appears with complete clarity in the Old Testament as Yahweh, as the Lord. But I will conclude with this. Saint Justin Popovich, the Serbian theologian of blessed memory, says: “The criterion of your faith and your salvation is the divine-human person of Jesus Christ.” We cannot be saved—the criterion of our salvation is this—unless we believe in the divine-human person of Jesus Christ. And John Chrysostom says:
When the Son ascended into heaven, what did He do during the ten days after the Ascension? He presented human nature to the Father and made atonement for human nature before the Father. Then the wrath of God ceased, and He sent the Holy Spirit, sending Him with gifts. But when the Holy Spirit comes to earth bearing gifts—the gifts of the Holy Spirit—it is because we sent Jesus on ahead into heaven. How did we send Him on ahead? He did not go by Himself. No, we sent Him on ahead. We sent Him with our faith that He is the Son of God who became man.
We sent Him on ahead with the hope that He will come again to save us, because Christ is our hope. This means that we offered faith and hope in the divine-human person of Jesus Christ; and in return, the Father is reconciled with humanity and sends His Holy Spirit, full of grace-filled gifts. So we too have given something. What have we given, what do we continue to give, and what must we always give in order to receive the Spirit of God, who is the way of our salvation? Faith in the divine-human person of Jesus Christ, and absolute hope in the absolute divine-human person of Jesus Christ.
He is our Savior, the Savior of all creation.

Ο Ευαγγελιστής Ματθαίος, όσο και ο Ευαγγελιστής Λουκάς, τον κατάλογο της ανθρωπίνης καταγωγής του Ιησού Χριστού: «Αβραάμ εγέννησε τον Ισαάκ» και το καθεξής, «Ισαάκ δε εγέννησε τον Ιακώβ» και λοιπά. Ώστε βλέπουμε εδώ πέρα ότι ο Ιησούς Χριστός είναι εκατό τοις εκατό άνθρωπος, ό,τι ακριβώς λέει η λέξη άνθρωπος. Βέβαια, αν έπρεπε να μείνουμε στον τίτλο «Υιός Ανθρώπου», θα πρέπει να κάνουμε πλήθος, πλήθος θεμάτων, που βεβαίως ξεφεύγει και από τη δική μου πια την ιδιότητα και τη γνώση μου. Είναι ένα τεράστιο θέμα «Υιός Ανθρώπου», ο τίτλος αυτός. «Τίνα με λέγουσιν οι άνθρωποι είναι», ρωτά τους μαθητάς του ο Κύριος, «τον Υιόν του Ανθρώπου;». Τι λένε οι άνθρωποι για μένα, τον Υιόν του Ανθρώπου;
Είναι κατά σχέση, κατά θέση, δηλαδή θετικά, δηλαδή... Για να σας πω, αγαπητοί μου, ό,τι σας είπα για τον Υιόν, εν παρεκβάσει θα σας έλεγα, μήπως είναι μια πολυπραγμοσύνη, αναλύοντας τα ονόματα του ενανθρωπήσαντος Υιού του Θεού, του Ιησού Χριστού, του Κυρίου μας, που ίσως δεν θα μας χρειάζεται εμάς, αλλά για τους θεολόγους;
Σας είπα, έμαθε γράμματα ενώ πρώτα δεν ήξερε, έγινε σοφός ενώ πρώτα δεν ήταν. Αυτό θα πει ότι ο άνθρωπος προάγεται. Ο Ιησούς ήταν αμαρτωλός και τώρα είναι άγιος; Ο Ιησούς ήταν Άγιος πάντοτε. Ο Ιησούς είχε τη γνώση πάντοτε, δεν είχε ανάγκη να πάει σχολείο, πάντοτε. Τι είπαν οι συμπατριώτες; «Πώς ούτος γράμματα οίδε μη μεμαθηκώς;» Πώς έμαθε γράμματα αφού δεν έχει πάει σχολείο; «Πόθεν τούτω η σοφία;» Η σοφία δεν ήρθε κατά προκοπήν, κατά προαγωγήν, αλλά υπήρχε πάντοτε. Γιατί;
Για μας τι σημασία έχει αυτό; Ότι από τη στιγμή που ο Θεός έκανε τον κόσμο, είναι Κύριος των πάντων. Δηλαδή θα μπορούσε να μην είναι Κύριος των πάντων, να είναι μεν δημιουργός αλλά να μην είναι Κύριος; Βέβαια. Πώς θα μπορούσε να γίνει αυτό; Αυτό. Φανταστείτε, αγαπητοί μου, να μας έλεγε ο Θεός: «Αγαπημένα μου παιδιά, άνθρωποι, εγώ σας δημιούργησα με πολλή σοφία και με πολλή αγάπη, αλλά δεν έχω παντοδυναμία. Συνεπώς, σας λυπάμαι, σας αγαπώ, σας συμπαθώ, αλλά δεν μπορώ να σας βοηθήσω, επειδή δεν έχω παντοδυναμία, δεν έχω κυριότητα». Θα το φανταζόσαστε αυτό; Ή το αντίστροφο;
Την έννοια τη φιλοσοφική, που λέμε ότι είναι αιώνιος και αθάνατος και, όπως η νύχτα με τη μέρα ή το φως με το σκότος, παλεύουν αενάως, χωρίς ούτε το φως να νικά το σκότος ούτε το σκότος να νικά το φως, όπως μπορούσε να λέγει η περσική δυαρχία. Ο διάβολος, αγαπητοί μου, δεν είναι Θεός με αυτή τη φιλοσοφική έννοια, αλλά είναι απλώς ένα κτίσμα που, κατά παραχώρηση του Θεού, γιατί έτσι ο Θεός το θέλει και για να μας δώσει μια απάντηση σε αυτό το βαθύ μυστήριο και ακατανόητο της ελευθερίας, της Αποκαλύψεως, τον αφήνει κατά παραχώρηση ο Θεός. Αλλά δεν θα μείνει πάντα έτσι. Θυμηθείτε το βιβλίο της Αποκαλύψεως. Ή γιατί να πάω στην Αποκάλυψη;
ευαγγελιστής εις τους ποιμένας, τη νύχτα της γεννήσεως του Ιησού Χριστού, ότι «Χριστός Κύριος· ετέχθη υμίν σήμερον σωτήρ, ός εστιν Χριστός Κύριος, εν πόλει Δαβίδ». Καταρχάς, εκείνο το «σήμερον» και, μετέπειτα, «εν πόλει Δαβίδ», πόσο φυσιολογικά μας τοποθετεί στα χωροχρονικά πλαίσια της ιστορίας! Κοιτάξτε, θα το πω άλλη μια φορά. Εκείνο το «σήμερα γεννήθηκε για εσάς», «ετέχθη σήμερον υμίν σωτήρ». Σήμερα, χρονικά. Πού;
