Summary

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem’s Tenth Catechesis explains the Creed’s confession of one Lord Jesus Christ to catechumens preparing for Baptism. Christ is both the way to the Father and the truth and life toward which believers journey, so rejecting Him leaves a person without true knowledge of God. Saint Cyril appeals to the New Testament and the messianic second Psalm to defend the Son’s divinity against teachings that reduce Him to a creature.

My dear friends, we have now come to Saint Cyril of Jerusalem’s Tenth Catechesis.

The title of this catechesis is: “The Tenth Catechesis for Those About to Be Illumined in Jerusalem, on the words, ‘And in one Lord Jesus Christ,’” followed by the appointed reading, and so forth. Thus, the subject of this catechesis—which, of course, is addressed to those about to be illumined, that is, to the catechumens who would soon be baptized—is the phrase, “And in one Lord Jesus Christ.”

Let me remind you—and explain for those joining us for the first time—that the catechetical lectures of Saint Cyril concern the Creed: “I believe in one God, the Father Almighty,” and so forth. He takes up one point of the Creed, one article at a time.

James. A single article of the Creed may take up two or three catechetical talks, as needed. In this way, Saint Cyril instructs those who are preparing to be baptized. You cannot imagine how glad I was the other day when I read that, somewhere in Athens, a school of catechesis is being held at a fairly advanced level. By “fairly advanced,” I mean that those attending are people capable of understanding certain things, especially those who will serve in positions of responsibility, and that this catechesis also includes both an apologetic element and an anti-heretical one. Of course, these elements belong in catechesis. If you have noticed, for example, whenever we speak about Jesus Christ,

What shall we speak about today, with God’s help? Undoubtedly, there will be material that refutes heresy. If you like, when someone carries a touchstone in his pocket, he can test every coin to see how pure its gold is. In the same way, of course, we can learn certain things about heresies. But when we possess the truth, even if we know nothing about a particular heresy, the first time we hear it we will say, “This is heresy,” because we possess the truth. The tragedy is that we do not possess even the truth, and we do not possess it because there is no catechesis. Saint Cyril also provides an apologetic element; both his refutation of heresy and his apologetic teaching are rich and abundant. And, if you like, this is the right method.

All this material can be presented together. We should not say, “Now I am simply holding a special class devoted to refuting heresies,” or, “Now we are gathering material for apologetics.” No. All these elements should be offered within a comprehensive catechesis. I repeat: this is the best approach. Saint Cyril’s method is classical, exemplary, and important. This is precisely why, in the introduction to Saint Cyril’s Catecheses written by a professor of patristics, his method is regarded as a model of pastoral ministry.

First.

We have a tendency—and it is a sinful one—to separate things. This is the age of specialization. We speak of liturgical matters.

We speak of apologetic subjects. But why do we separate them? All these elements should be present together, just as a meal contains not merely one nutrient but many, because the body needs many different nutrients. And they are offered in the most beautiful, simple, and natural way. We find all these elements here, in the Catecheses of Saint Cyril. I am deeply pleased, however, by the effort now being made and by the growing recognition that our people need to be catechized anew. It is well known that the institution of the catechetical school has been undervalued and disparaged. That is wrong. Of course, some things may not have been done properly in the catechesis of children.

This is not the time to discuss any mistakes that may have been made. But even if mistakes were made, and even if the methods used were not always the right ones, no one can fault the work itself. Yet somehow, in our time, this institution has greatly declined. So much so that when we send out notices each year for our catechetical school, we do not even use the word “catechetical,” because—notice this—the word shocks people. Even words can shock. Listen to what an unpleasant word that is said to be: it jars people and provokes a reaction. In other words, it expresses something that people today do not readily accept. And that is wrong—quite wrong. We must find a way to catechize our people, to catechize them anew, whatever their age.

It is one great catechetical school, as I have told you many times, and we are all disciples of Christ—I too am a disciple. Would you think, then, that I am a teacher? I am not a teacher; I too am learning as a disciple. First I will read here, first I will study here, first I will learn here, and then I will share these things with you as well. We are all, therefore, disciples of the Word of God, and we must continue learning until we die. Take note of this, because someone might say that when we go to school and learn our lessons, eventually the time comes when we receive our diploma. Should it perhaps be the same here—that at some point we ought to complete our catechesis and leave? Some brothers and sisters may say, “I attended for two, three, five years, and it is the same things over and over again.” Let us suppose that we are not saying the same things over and over again; but even if we were, beyond the information itself,

Beyond learning the content of our faith, there is another aspect that we have undervalued. We have not even realized that there is also the sustaining power of God’s Word. My dear friends, I may know everything—if it were possible for us to learn everything; the things of theology are endless, believe me, truly endless. As I have told you before, I shall reach the end of my life without yet having read Holy Scripture as I should. I have not truly read it, I confess. Believe it or not, I still have not truly read it. And that is only reading; imagine trying to go more deeply and analyze it. The depths of theology are endless. So someone may say, “You have learned it all—or at least, let us suppose that you have.” But does that knowledge not need to be kept alive?

“Repetition is the mother of all learning,” as the saying goes. Yes, because when we continually listen to the Word of God, even if we learn nothing—though that is impossible—the Word of God still sustains us. Who ever grows tired of bread? Who grows tired of water? Who grows tired of salt? Are they not always the same? We may vary our food, but we always drink the same water; we always put the same salt in our food; and at our table, we always eat the same bread. Who says that he has grown tired of it, or that he already knows what it is? These things sustain us; they keep us alive. And so I earnestly, very earnestly, appeal to you.

Let us always come and listen to the Word of God. It is said that the eminent, the great Ampère—the famous man after whom the unit for measuring electric current was named—

He would go to the catechism school in his neighborhood, where the little children had their catechism lessons. The catechist was a young student who had Ampère as his professor at the university. “Greetings, Professor,” he said. “You have come to listen to me?” “My child,” Ampère replied, “yes, I have come to listen to you. First of all, I like the way you teach the lesson. And besides, I cannot claim to know everything. Even when I do know something, it gets dusted off, so to speak, and I remember it afresh.”

Mr. Ampère would go and sit in a chair at the very back, among all the children attending catechism. If you will, my dear friends, this is humility of mind; this is true humility: not to claim that you know everything, but to say, “I will always be a student. Until the day I die, I will remain a student.” And you should know this: just as Socrates, the wisest of men, used to say, “One thing I know: that I know nothing,” so the person who says, “I know nothing; I will always remain a student,” will become the wisest of all. We know this to be true. The proud person, however, is never wise—the one who keeps saying, “I know it, I know it,” like a certain woman who once said, “Yes, I know the Gospel. I know it, I know it.” Yes—but she did not say whether she knew what was inside it or merely the outside; that is, whether all she knew of the Gospel was its cover.

We know the Gospel from the outside—from its cover. The priest brings out the Gospel book every Sunday and reads it word for word. Yes, we know it outwardly. But what about what is inside? Do we read it, study it, truly know it? It is pride and foolishness, then, to say that we know the Word of God—sheer foolishness. But I will say it once more: even if we do know the Word of God, we fail to recognize that it sustains our very existence. We must therefore remain always in contact with the Word of God. Let us see, then, what Saint Cyril says in this, his Tenth Catechesis.

Having been taught to believe in one God, the Father Almighty,

They must believe in the only-begotten Son. For whoever denies the Son does not have the Father either. “I am the door,” says Jesus. “No one comes to the Father except through Me.” For if anyone rejects the door, the knowledge of the Father is closed to him.

Those who say that they believe in one God, the Father Almighty, and who have been taught to believe in one God, the Father Almighty, must also believe and accept—indeed, they are bound to accept—that they believe in the Only-Begotten Son as well. For no one can ever say that he believes in the Father while refusing to accept the Only-Begotten Son of God. And from the very beginning of his catechesis, Saint Cyril tells us that whoever denies the Son does not have the Father either, just as the Evangelist John says in his First Epistle, chapter 2, verse 23. As I was telling you...

I told you this yesterday, and I shall tell it to you very often, because it is perhaps especially relevant today: many people think they can believe in God while denying Jesus Christ. Here Saint Cyril explains this by recalling Christ’s words: “I am the door, I am the gate, and no one—no one—comes to the Father except through Me,” as John the Evangelist writes in chapter 14, verse 6. What does this mean? When Christ said, “I am the gate,” He meant the gate leading to the Father. Have you ever thought of that? When Christ says, “I am the way,” He means, “I am the way to the Father.” For, in the final analysis,

you may tell me that He is the gate of salvation, or simply the way of salvation, or the way of the spiritual life, or something else of that kind. You may even say that He is the means and the way, because the Son is presented both as the means and as the destination.

A road is always the means by which we reach somewhere. A road always connects two points. I leave my home and go to school; this means that the two points, home and school, are connected by a road. Christ, then, is both the road—the means—and the final destination, the school, to use the example we have just given. So what does Christ mean when He says, “I am the way”? He says:

“I am the truth and the life.” Therefore, truth and life are the destination, and that destination is Christ. I must reach life; I must reach the truth. But how shall I reach Christ, who is life and truth? Again, through Christ, who is the way. All these interpretations are correct and sound. But the principal point, my beloved, is the one I am telling you and which Saint Cyril teaches: the Son is the way to the Father. Unless you walk upon the way, which is the Son, you will never reach the Father. Unless you pass through the gate, which is the Son, you will never know or encounter the Father. In other words, both the gate and the way are images.

You must accept, embrace, and believe in the divine-human person of Jesus Christ: that He is the Only-Begotten Son, possessing sonship in a unique and exceptional manner. We shall see this a little further on. He is not a child of God by grace or adoption, as we are, but the Son of God by nature. Then, without question, you also know the Father. Do you deny this? Then you have neither the Son nor the Father, and you are an atheist. I have said this two or three times already in these talks, and I said it yesterday, but I shall tell you once again. According to Holy Scripture, this is the meaning of atheism. The meaning commonly given to atheism by people in the world is different. Someone says to you, “I believe in a higher power.”

“I am not an atheist,” he tells you. “I am not an atheist.” According to Holy Scripture, however, he is an atheist. Indeed, today we try to discover a few crumbs of faith in the prominent figures of modern history—in certain scientists, great artists, and leading politicians; in short, in famous people of our age. Then we say, “Look, this person believes.” We write articles about it, publish them, and publicize them: “See? So-and-so believes.” In a book that collected the opinions of scientists, Einstein was included. I remember reading when I was younger that Einstein was a believer, and so forth. A believer in what? Later, when I learned what Einstein actually believed, I was astonished. He did not accept the prophets.

He was Jewish and therefore did not accept Jesus Christ. He said that Jesus Christ was a great figure, but merely a great man, an important person. He lived and died a Jew, in the sense that he did not believe in Christ. As for the prophets, he regarded them as people who distorted history and led the people astray—the prophets! If this was how he regarded the prophets who spoke of Christ, it naturally followed that, since he did not have the road represented by the prophets, he could never reach the Son, who was the destination of that road—the fulfillment of their prophecies. Is that not the natural consequence? How, then, can we hold up Einstein and say that he was wise and a believer? In essence, he was an unbeliever. My beloved, I do not know about all those whom we present as believers.

I do not know whether I was exaggerating, but I used to say that perhaps only one in a hundred is a true believer. In what sense? In the evangelical sense—the sense given by the Gospel and Holy Scripture. Yet because today there is a climate of coldness toward the faith, a climate of atheism, we display even these crumbs, though they have been gathered from dirt and rubbish. We say that this singer believes, or that this male or female athlete believes, and so readily declare that such a person is not an atheist. My beloved, the criterion for whether you are with God or without God is whether you accept the person of Jesus Christ. That is the criterion.

That, and that alone—nothing else. I am not speaking here about how one lives, because after faith comes the second step: the life one leads. But in the realm of faith, this is the criterion. You can therefore understand how many people today may be atheists because they have a false understanding of the person of Jesus Christ. I earnestly beg you who hear the Word of God: let no one come to regard Jesus Christ merely as a sociologist, a wise man, or anything of that kind. No—for God’s sake, no! He is the second Person of the Holy Trinity who became man. This is the true faith. Otherwise, whatever else we may say, we remain within the realm of atheism. I say this plainly and categorically. These are not my own words. You have seen how the Word of God reveals these things here and how Saint Cyril presents them to us.

Saint Cyril, of course, grounds what he says in Holy Scripture: “For if you reject the gate, knowledge of the Father is closed to you.” That is, if you close the gate—what does it mean to close the gate? It means that you do not accept the person of Jesus Christ. What did Christ say? “I am the gate.” If you close that gate and do not pass through it, then knowledge of the Father is also closed to you. You have no knowledge of God; you are in ignorance of God. And do you know what the Apostle Paul says to the Corinthians? He uses words that are not at all flattering: “I say this to your shame.” He says this to the Christians of Corinth: “Some have no knowledge of God.” Although in their case the matter had

a somewhat more excusable character. The Corinthians, who had only recently been idolaters—and this gave them some excuse—were denying the resurrection of the dead. Why did they deny it? At the very least, they were ignorant of the power of God. And Paul says, “Some have no knowledge of God. I say this to your shame.” In any case, you can see that if we close the gate and exclude the person of Jesus Christ, we remain in the darkness of ignorance of God. We know nothing. “No one knows,” Christ says in Matthew 11:27, “no one knows the Father except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him.” No one knows the Father except the Son,

and the one to whom the Son reveals the Father. You may ask, “To whomever He chooses? Am I not responsible in any way?” No, that is not what this means. The Son reveals the Father to everyone in whom He finds a good and willing disposition. God—Christ—shows no partiality. We must never forget this. Let us show goodwill, and then all will go very well for us. “For if you reject Him who reveals, you remain in ignorance.” Naturally, if you reject the One who reveals, you remain in ignorance. “There is a declaration in the Gospels which says...” Here the Greek word for “declaration” comes from the words meaning “from” and “to say.” It means a statement, not a decision in the modern sense of the word.

“He who disobeys the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains upon him,” as John the Evangelist says in chapter 3, verse 36. In other words, the one who does not believe in the Son will not see life; he will not see eternal life. And not only this, but the wrath of God also remains upon him. “For the Father is indignant when His Only-Begotten Son is rejected.” When Jesus Christ was baptized, remember, the voice of the heavenly Father was heard: “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

When the Lord was transfigured on Mount Tabor, the same words were heard: “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” “My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” This is My beloved Son, in whom I rest, in whom I delight, who has pleased Me. You see, then, that if a person comes and rejects the One in whom the Father is well pleased, the Father will undoubtedly be indignant with that person for rejecting His Son. This is entirely natural. Saint Cyril gives a parallel example further on, but I shall not read it, so that we are not delayed. I now come to the second paragraph: “Therefore, whoever desires to worship God with true reverence...”

“let him worship the Son, for otherwise the Father does not accept his worship.” Saint Cyril says that if anyone desires to worship God devoutly, he must worship the Son, since the Father does not accept worship from which the Son is absent. Let us pay close attention to this point. We go to the Divine Liturgy, light our candles, and offer incense, prosphora, oil, gifts, chandeliers, choir stalls, and icon stands. What else might we offer to a church? We might give money to build one. But, my beloved, if we do not believe in the person of Jesus Christ,

the Father does not desire our offering. He rejects it. Whether it is worship in the strict sense—going to the Divine Liturgy, being present, and taking part in the mystical table—or in the broader sense of offering anything for the worship and glory of God, if I do not accept the Son, my offering is not accepted. Not even the very posture of my body is accepted. Remember, there is nothing wrong with sitting in church. In ancient times we had a tradition of benches or seats within the place of worship. It is not a sin to sit.

Yet out of reverence, the people of God have always preferred to stand. A person sits when tired, elderly, or ill. But you will have noticed that, at least in Orthodox churches, the people stand. Why do they stand? It expresses a heightened reverence. A soul that wishes to worship God wants to be upright—to stand properly before Him, the whole person, body and soul. This is an important point. Notice that standing itself is an element of worship. Yet the Father does not accept even this standing if someone rejects His Son.

That is, if you do not believe in the person of His Son. God does not want even that. He wants nothing from you. Everything you offer will be accepted if you believe in the person of His Son. “The Father proclaimed from heaven, saying: This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” The Father is well pleased in the Son.

If you hate Him and are not well pleased in Him, you do not have life. The Father, then, is well pleased in the Son. If you too are not well pleased in Him, you do not have eternal life. “Do not be carried away with the deceit of the Jews, who say that there is only one God.” Pay attention to this point, because this idea, this position, is truly introduced in a deceitful manner. It is not merely an old issue. From time to time it reappears, as it does today among the Jehovah’s Witnesses, who say: “No, the Son is a creature of the Father, and therefore He is a son by grace, not the Son by nature.” In all honesty, on the basis of the little we have said thus far, there can be no greater blasphemy. Do you understand? They do not accept that the Son is consubstantial—of one essence—with the Father. But what do they put forward? The very claim made by the Jews in those days. And since the teaching of the Jehovah’s Witnesses has Jewish roots, you can understand this more clearly: the same positions always return. The same is true of Islam—take note of this. Because Islam is a mixture of Judaism and Christianity, though much more of Judaism...

together with pagan ideas, as we have said. This is Islam, which arose around the seventh century, when Mohammedanism began. It speaks of only one God but does not accept the three Persons. What, then, do the Jews say? “There is only one God.” “But together with the confession that there is one God, know also that there is an Only-Begotten Son of God. I was not the first to say this; rather, the Psalmist, speaking in the person of the Son, says it.” As you know, in answering the Jews who deceitfully speak in this way—and today the Jehovah’s Witnesses stand in their place as the spiritual descendants of the unbelieving Jews of old, because the true Jew, the true Jew—

When the Son came, he believed. That is why the Lord said when He saw Nathanael, “Behold, a true Israelite, in whose mouth there is no deceit.” As you know, deceit has a broad meaning. A lie is a form of deceit. If I tell a lie, I have deceit in my mouth. But surely, someone might ask, did Nathanael never tell a lie in his entire life? That is not what the Lord meant. He meant that Nathanael had an upright heart. When he studied the prophets, he was ready to accept what was to come. The Messiah came, and Nathanael saw that what the prophets had foretold agreed with what he himself was seeing.

He discerned the spiritual character in the spiritual person of Jesus Christ, and said what he did: “Truly, You are the Son of God,” Nathanael declared. So what does it mean that there was no deceit in him? It means: I am ready to accept the Son of God, Jesus Christ, sincerely, because I have an upright soul within me. If there is deceit, things are different. Therefore, the Jews who did not believe had deceit in their hearts. Their hearts were not upright. And, as I told you, the spiritual descendants today of those unbelieving Jews are the Chiliasts. In responding to them, as you know, we use—at least with the Jews, but no less with the Chiliasts—

the Old Testament, in certain passages. Saint Cyril draws on one or two passages from the Old Testament. You heard the first one: it is from the second Psalm, verse 7. This wonderful Psalm is clearly messianic, as they say. “The Lord said to me, ‘You are My Son,’” says the Psalmist, speaking in the person of the Son. The Lord said to me, “You are My Son.”

If we had time to examine this psalm now—though of course we are not going to do so—we would discover astonishing things. Let me say just a few words about its meaning. The psalm speaks of the Lord’s Christ—the title “Christ” meaning, etymologically, the Anointed One, the One appointed by God. Whether it is Christ speaking to God, to the Father, or the Father speaking to His Christ, to His Son, the things said here could never be applied to any mere man, no matter how exalted his position in this world might be, even to David as king.

It is well known that David is the author of this second Psalm. David composed it. Therefore, David is not speaking about himself, nor does this Psalm refer to David. It goes beyond the limits of any human person, for it speaks of one who will reign over all the nations. David did not reign over all the nations. It says that with a rod of iron he will shatter those who oppose him like a potter’s vessels, and so on. These things do not fit the person of David. Consequently, David is speaking here about another person, not about himself. Indeed, the whole structure of the Psalm makes this perfectly clear. What, then, does it say here? “The Lord said to me, ‘You are My Son.’”

Further on, it says, “Today I have begotten You.” Could this be said of any other human being? “Today I have begotten You.” What Lord turns to someone and says to him, “You are My Son; today I have begotten You”? The words “today I have begotten You” have many meanings. I will explain them to you shortly. This can refer only to another Person, someone other than David. And this Person, my beloved, transcends every human person: He is the second Person of the Holy Trinity. He is the Son of God. It is as simple as that. For someone might say, “Perhaps He is speaking to an angel,” as the millenarians claim. But when the Apostle Paul speaks about the angels in the Epistle to the Hebrews, he says that God declares:

“He who makes the angels.” He made the angels. Scripture immediately uses the verb “made,” and the answer is clear: this means they are created beings, ministering spirits. “But to the Son He says, ‘Today I have begotten You,’” and the Son has inherited a name far more excellent than that of the angels. The Son, then, is not an angel or the Archangel Michael, as the millenarians claim. What does this mean? It means that here we have another Person. And because He says, “I have begotten You,” this shows that all created things are God’s creatures, the works of His hands. What does Scripture say about the angels? “He made His angels spirits,” and so forth. “He made.” But to the Son: “Today I have begotten You.”

“Today I have begotten You.” The verb “beget” points to the Son’s being consubstantial with the Father; therefore, the Son is God. But this phrase, “Today I have begotten You,” which appears here in the second Psalm and in the first chapter of the Epistle to the Hebrews—let me explain this as well—has two interpretations. The first refers to Christ’s human nature: in this interpretation, “today” refers to a moment within time. The other interpretation is that “today” means the eternal, the everlasting, the ever-present now. Not yesterday and not tomorrow, but today—that is, always. It therefore lies outside time and reveals that the Son is consubstantial with the Father and without beginning.

He is consubstantial with the Father and without beginning, just as the Father is. These are the two interpretations. One refers to His human nature, and the other to His divine nature. Both are Orthodox interpretations given by the Fathers of our Church. “Do not, then, pay attention to what the Jews say, but to what the prophets say.” This is very important. Do not look at what the Jews say, but at what the prophets say. “Are you surprised that those who stoned and killed the prophets also reject the words of the prophets?” Are you surprised that these people, who went so far as to reject the prophets, to stone them, murder them, and kill them—are you surprised if these people...

deny, in the end, even what the prophets themselves said? In other words, they are not only killers of the prophets, but killers of Christ as well. That is only to be expected. So do not pay attention to what these people say; look instead to what the Word of God says, to what the prophets say. Paragraph 3: “Believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only-Begotten Son of God.” You, then, must believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only-Begotten Son of God. Do you see how many points we have covered? Each one has its own distinct meaning. “And we say ‘one’...”

Jesus Christ is Only-Begotten in His Sonship. We call Him one because His Sonship—His being the Son—means that He is Only-Begotten; and since He is Only-Begotten, He is plainly also one. “We call Him one, lest you suppose there is another”—lest you think there is a second Son. This is why we say that He, the Son, is one. “We call Him one, lest you impiously distribute the many names of His divine uncreated energies among many Sons.” What follows is a list of several titles referring to the person of the Son. A title means a name—that is, one of the many names by which the Son is called.

Therefore, the Son has many names. But take care: He has many names with respect to His divine uncreated energies—that is, His attributes. When you hear that the Son is this or that, or that He is called by one name and then another, do not imagine that God has many sons. Take care, for that is impiety; it is a dreadful error. Rather, all these names are used for a particular purpose. The Son, then, is one—one. That is why He is called one and Only-Begotten. Saint Cyril now gives these names of the Son, the titles by which He is known under many names: “For He is called the door; but do not suppose that this title means a wooden door, but rather a spiritual and living door.”

Discerning those who enter. How is the Son called the door? Do not imagine that He is a wooden door, a door that people open and pass through. No, He is a rational door—that is, a spiritual door—living and able to discern those who enter. You may ask, “Would Saint Cyril really go so far as to say, ‘Do not imagine that this is a wooden door’?” My dear friends, if you read even a little—if the opportunity ever arises for you to read the teachings of the heretics of the first centuries, especially those of the Gnostics—Gnosticism was a dreadful heresy, truly dreadful—if you read a little and see...

If you read how they interpreted Holy Scripture in those days, you will pass through a whole range of emotions—sometimes anger, sometimes laughter. You will say, “Could they really have been so foolish? Did they understand nothing at all?” It is very simple: they did not have the Spirit of God. And anyone who does not have the Spirit of God will either interpret everything literally and arrive at monstrous ideas, or resort to allegory and arrive at equally monstrous ideas there. That is what the Gnostics did with their endless, bottomless allegories, drawing monstrous conclusions from them. So you may one day come across some ancient heresy claiming that Jesus Christ was a wooden door that had to be opened. Do not be surprised in the least. “Do not suppose, then, that this is a wooden door. He is called the Way—not a road trodden underfoot, but the Way that leads to the heavenly Father.” The Son is also called the Way. This does not mean a road on which people walk with their feet, but the way by which a person reaches the heavenly Father. “He is called a sheep—a sheep, a lamb—not an irrational sheep,” not an animal like an actual sheep, “but the One who, through His precious blood, cleanses the whole world from sins, the One who is led before the shearer.”

“And knowing when He ought to remain silent.” This sheep knows when to remain silent, because He is the sheep offered in sacrifice—that is, the Son of God, who is sacrificed in His human nature. He is therefore called a sheep. “This same sheep is also called a shepherd.” The same person, in another context, is called a shepherd—the very same person. At one time He is the sheep, and at another the shepherd. What did Christ say? “I am the good shepherd.” He is the sheep with respect to His humanity, and the shepherd because of the loving-kindness of His divinity. He is the sheep in His human nature, which is sacrificed; but in His divinity He is the shepherd, who in His love for mankind comes to our aid.

to shepherd us. “And do you wish to know that He also had sheep endowed with reason?” He says to the Apostles, “Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves.” Why does He call His disciples sheep among wolves? Because a human being can be called a sheep precisely because of the sheep’s innocence and its other qualities. “Again, He is called a lion.” Christ is called both a sheep and a lion. “Not a man-eating lion”—not a lion that devours people—“but as though this title reveals the royal, steadfast, and confident character of His hypostasis, His person. He is called a lion in opposition to the adversary, that roaring lion who devours those he has deceived.” He is also called a lion...

And the tribe from which He descended is called the tribe of the lion. Note also that the Jews had emblems. When they were in the wilderness, the twelve tribes were arranged in four groups of three, stationed to the east, west, north, and south of the Ark. The Ark was in the middle, and each group of three tribes had a standard, a banner; and the standard of Judah bore the lion. If you will, the four symbols of the Evangelists—the lion, the eagle, the ox, and the angel in human form—were precisely the four symbols found at that time in the Old Testament. They are mentioned in the Book of Numbers in the Old Testament. Jesus, then, is called a lion here because He descended from the tribe of Judah. We also have the ancient prophecy of Jacob, which says: “Like a young lion, my son, you will lie down to sleep; and who dares awaken you?” Who dares say to a lion, “Wake up”? We nudge our goat, our sheep, or our ox to make it rise. But who dares go and rouse a sleeping lion? And He is also called a lion because He is of royal descent, from the line of David.

He is also called a lion, as we might say, because He stands against another lion, the devil, for Holy Scripture itself calls the devil a lion. What does the Apostle Peter say in his first epistle? That the devil goes about “like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour”—looking for someone to swallow up. Thus Christ is called a lion in opposition to that other lion, the devil, with his man-devouring nature, who is also our adversary. “For the Lord came, not changing the gentleness of His own nature, but as a mighty lion from the tribe of Judah,” as I explained to you, “saving...”

“saving those who believe and trampling down the adversary.” That is why He is called a lion: He saves those who believe and tramples down His adversary, the devil. “He is called a stone.” He is also called the Stone: “not a lifeless stone, quarried by human hands, but the cornerstone; whoever believes in Him shall not be put to shame.” Christ Himself said that He is the cornerstone, and that whoever stumbles upon this cornerstone will be crushed by it—ground to powder. This is precisely what the Lord meant to say to the Jews: “The stone which the builders rejected...”

“Has become the chief cornerstone.” The word “became,” written with a single eta in Greek, means precisely “came to be.” This stone—that is, I, Christ, Jesus—was rejected by you who were responsible for building up the people of God in faith in God. You said, “This stone is unsuitable; let us remove it from the building. Jesus is unsuitable.” Yet this very stone became the cornerstone. If you can picture the buildings of old—for today we build with concrete and no longer have that same image—you will remember that they placed great cornerstones at the corners, especially where the house needed a firm foundation so that it would not fall. That is the cornerstone. So the very one whom you rejected became the cornerstone.

fundamental and foundational, the stone upon which the whole edifice of faith rests. Christ is also called a rock, a stone. He is the rock that Moses struck and from which water flowed. And the Apostle Paul uses a strange expression about that rock—for it prefigured Christ. He refers to this living stone, this living rock, and says that it was “the rock that followed” the people of God. We know that the rock itself stood in one place. Moses struck it, water flowed out, and the people of God drank. But it was simply a rock. The Jews did not carry it with them so that it could keep giving them water. It was one rock, one stone.

Yet the Apostle Paul says that this stone followed them. How did it follow them? He is indicating here that Christ followed His people in another form: in the form of the cloud, luminous by night and dark by day. And that cloud truly did accompany the people. What do we see here? Jesus Christ was already journeying with His people through the wilderness. And it was not merely the water. The Son of God, who was to become incarnate, shared the hardships of His people throughout their forty years in the wilderness. Here we may speak, if the expression is permissible, of the history of the Son of God—for God does not have a history. History is bound up with time, while God is not bound by time. But when the Son of God enters time and becomes man, He acquires a history. Thus we might speak of the history of the Son of God, a history that fills a person with wonder, if only he recognizes Him—if he recognizes His person, His footsteps, and, we might say, His very heartbeat, His life and breath within the Old Testament. Then, and only then, he will certainly recognize Him in the New Testament, where He is always the same: Jesus Christ. “He is called Christ, not because He was anointed by human hands, but because He was anointed by the Father”

“eternally, for a high priesthood surpassing that of man.” He is also called Christ, that is, the One who has been anointed. This is not because He was anointed with oil, as anointing was practiced among the Jews, when the high priest and the king were anointed. The Son was not anointed by human hands, but by the Father Himself. Where do we find this anointing? In these words: “This is My beloved Son.” See how the Father anoints the Son: “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” He anoints Him and reveals Him, just as in ancient times an anointed king or anointed high priest was publicly appointed. And this anointing is eternal, without beginning. He is also called dead.

Another name given to Christ is “the dead One.” He Himself says in the Apocalypse: “I was dead, and behold, I am alive.” Behold, I live; I exist. “I became dead.” You see? This too is a name applied to Him. Truly, how many names Jesus Christ has! Speaking of the Holy Spirit, Saint Gregory the Theologian lists more than fifty names. There are many more. The names of the Son are beyond counting—an astonishing multitude of names and titles throughout the New Testament and the Old Testament. He is even called a serpent; do not be surprised. I am stepping aside from Saint Cyril for a moment. We know that the devil is called a serpent, yet even Christ is called a serpent. I will not explain this further; I mention it only to show you how many names Jesus Christ has. A great multitude. All these names are nothing other than the distinguishing marks of His person. It is like trying to describe someone whose photograph we do not possess, so that afterward we can reconstruct his likeness. Suppose a criminal causes a disturbance or commits a crime. Ten people saw him, but we have no photograph of him. So they describe him to the police.

They describe his distinguishing features. One person noticed his eyebrows, another his eyes, another his build or height. A description is formed. And from that description, using a particular method—at least, this was done in the past; I do not know what methods they use now—they would show the witnesses various faces. For however many patterns we may have, they are not infinite, even though there are always small details that fall outside them. We often say, “Ah, you look like that person.” In what way do you look alike? Human appearances can be grouped into a certain number of types—fifty, a hundred, five hundred, however many you please. So they would prepare five hundred faces and ask the witnesses who had seen the man, “Did he look something like this? Or like this? Was he like this? Or like this?” Eventually they would say, “There—that is what he looked like, like that face.” In the same way, these are the distinguishing marks of Jesus Christ. We find them within Holy Scripture.

The Apostles studied the distinguishing marks of Christ, and that is why they followed Him. “We have found Him of whom Moses and the prophets wrote,” Philip says to Nathanael. “We have found Him.” Later Andrew goes to Peter—to his brother Simon—and says, “We have found the Messiah.” How had they found Him? Where, and in what way, does one find Him? Until then, they had not known Him. John himself says, “I did not know Him. The One who told me to baptize also told me that He is the Messiah.” So how did the disciples find Him? They found Him because they already possessed His distinguishing marks from Holy Scripture, from the Old Testament. And what are those marks? They are the very ones Saint Cyril is now setting before us. If we too truly know them, my dear friends, we will never depart from the right faith. Let us continue. He is therefore called dead,

“not because He remained among the dead, as all others remain in Hades, but because He alone among the dead is free.” He is indeed called dead, but He did not remain among the dead as all others do in Hades. He alone is free among the dead, for He rose from the dead. But since the hour is late, my dear friends, we shall stop here and continue, God willing, next Monday.

να μάθουμε το περιεχόμενο της πίστης μας, είναι και ένα άλλο στοιχείο το οποίο έχουμε υποτιμήσει. Ούτε καν έχουμε αντιληφθεί ότι υπάρχει το στοιχείο της συντηρήσεως. Μπορεί, αγαπητοί μου, να τα ξέρω όλα —αν είναι δυνατό να τα μάθουμε όλα· είναι ατελεύθετα τα της θεολογίας, πιστέψτε με, είναι ατελεύθετα— και άλλη φορά σας έχω πει: θα φτάσω να πεθάνω και δεν έχω κάνει ακόμα ανάγνωση της Αγίας Γραφής. Ανάγνωση δεν έχω κάνει, το ομολογώ. Ανάγνωση, το πιστεύετε, δεν έχω κάνει ακόμα. Πού να πει κανείς να βαθύνεις, να αναλύσεις· ατελεύτητο το βάθος της θεολογίας. Λοιπόν, μπορείς να πεις «τα 'μαθες, έστω, τα 'μαθες». Αλλά δεν θέλει συντήρηση;
