Summary
Saint Cyril presents humanity as the summit of creation, made to return the whole cosmos freely to God in thanksgiving and doxology. Because science studies fallen humanity, divine revelation is necessary to disclose the human person as God's image, composed of soul and body and called to conscious deification. The apophatic path of humility, purification, and lived faith is presented as more precise, while study of creation remains a useful but incomplete guide to divine providence.

We are in the fifteenth paragraph of Catechetical Lecture 9 of Saint Cyril of Jerusalem, which speaks of God as the Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. In our two previous talks, we examined creation: how God is revealed as the Creator, the wise Creator, the wise Provider, and the wise Ruler of all things. And God is Pantokrator, the Almighty—that is, He holds all things in His hands.
Is there any created thing that is not held by God? He is therefore Pantokrator, the Almighty. And now we come to man. Saint Cyril leaves man until last in order to emphasize that he is God’s creation par excellence, and that the rest of creation was made for his sake. In other words, the whole universe—everything wise within creation—was made for man, and man was made for God. There the circle of creation is completed: from God, through God, and for God. We must never, ever forget this circle. As we have said, it constitutes the true worship that man is to offer God, because if he breaks this circle, the result is unquestionably idolatry. I shall say it once again: whatever God creates must return to Him. God creates the universe. And man is the summit of the universe, the universe in miniature. Man must now offer the universe to God of his own free will. This is the wisdom of God: man must offer it, not mechanically or lifelessly, but freely. And there the circle is completed. Creation has returned to God.
Creation returns to God; it returns in thanksgiving, it returns in doxology. This is expressed in the New Testament phrase I am about to repeat, which I have already quoted: “For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things.” Everything is from God, everything is through God, everything is for God. During the Divine Liturgy, the priest has bread upon the holy diskos—plain bread, nothing but bread before the Mystery is celebrated—and plain wine in the chalice. He crosses his hands, forming the sign of the Cross, and raises these gifts, which represent creation. The wine and the bread represent creation. But they are neither wheat nor grapes; they are bread and wine, meaning that they have passed through human labor. Thus man’s personal work is present within them: man’s participation and toil. And now, of his own free will and deliberate choice, the priest speaks on behalf of the congregation standing behind him—the entire congregation. At least, I preserve this awareness every time, and it moves me profoundly.
I am deeply moved that at this moment all the people are making an offering to God through my hands. What will they offer? The people offer through the hands of the priest. It is the people who offer; let us not forget this. And what does the priest say? Having raised the gifts upward with his arms crossed—and the form of the Cross is deeply significant, for it expresses sacrifice and much else, but I shall say no more because later we will interpret the Divine Liturgy—he says: “Your own of Your own we offer to You, in all and for all.” We offer to You what is Yours, taken from what is Yours, in all and for all. These things, then, are Yours; they are not ours. They come from what belongs to You, yet we offer them to You. So what are we doing here? We are returning
these representative elements—creation itself—back to God. What comes between God’s gift and its return? Man’s own will. This is a great thing. How can I explain it to you, my dear friends? Let me give you an example. You give your child money to keep in a savings box, and your child goes and buys flowers and sweets to offer you on your feast day. That money does not belong to your child; it is yours. You gave it to the child, yet the child offers it back to you. Tell me, if your child, on your feast day—especially in an age when our children rebel against their parents—
goes to the florist, buys a bouquet, and offers it to you, would that move you? You would say, “What a wonderful thing—my child brought me flowers!” The child certainly did not steal them but bought them. With whose money? With yours. This is what “Your own of Your own, to You” means—to You. “To You we offer.” Now notice something: “in all and for all.” “In all” means in accordance with everything You have told us; that is what “in all” means—in accordance with all You have told us. And “for all” means forever. We conform ourselves to everything You desire, and we do so forever. What are we to offer You? Creation.
And what does God now do? He receives what we offer Him—the universe, that is—and in return offers us nothing less than Himself. He gives us the Body and Blood of His Son, something infinitely greater than this universe and all its products. These are the respective places of the universe and of man. And this magnificent reality, my dear friends, reveals the true worship of God. If you ask what worship is, this is it: precisely what I have just told you. Indeed, if you wish, these things take place within worship, and they form its very heart of hearts.
Man offers to God, and God offers to man. “And make”—make what we have now offered You, the bread and the wine—“and make this bread the precious Body of Your Christ, and that which is in this cup the precious Blood of Your Christ.” Grant that these gifts may return to us with this enrichment, so to speak. We offered You something, and now it will return to us many times over—infinitely greater and better. This is man. Man is a great thing. I shall now read paragraph 15: “But perhaps you do not know these things.” Which things? Everything we have said about the animals, the plants, and the universe.
“You have no need of anything outside yourself. Enter, then, into yourself, and from your own existence understand the Craftsman.” Enter into yourself, and from your own existence come to understand the Craftsman. My dear friends, tonight we could spend the whole evening on this one sentence. But although I want to finish this subject today, I shall have to move very quickly through what I am about to tell you. In this sentence, the first thing is its opening half: “Enter, then, into yourself.” Enter into yourself. Do you know what that means? Turn back toward yourself.
Until now, your attention was directed toward the universe. Now you must direct it toward yourself. In the language of philosophy, this is called “passing from the cosmological problem to the anthropological problem”—from cosmology to anthropology. It is well known that the turning point in this transition from one problem to the other was a saying, an inscription written on the pediment of the Oracle of Delphi. It belongs to one of the Seven Sages of Greece—to Chilon, if my memory does not deceive me:
“Know yourself.” A wise saying. When Socrates saw it, he said: “Indeed, why should we turn toward creation and try to investigate it when another, far more important created reality stands before us?” And that reality is man. Thus, with Socrates, the anthropological problem begins. All the philosophers before Socrates were occupied with the cosmological problem: Democritus, Thales of Miletus, and all the others. What is matter? What is the universe? How did the universe come into being? All these questions constitute the cosmological problem.
With Socrates, the anthropological problem begins. What is man? How shall I learn what man is? By coming to know him: “Know yourself.” By way of background, let me tell you that both the first problem and the second give rise to a third and final one: the epistemological problem, the problem of knowledge. How can I know the universe objectively and not merely subjectively? And how can I know man objectively and not merely subjectively? What does that mean, in just a few words? What does “subjectively” mean? At this moment, my dear friends, I am shown something white.
It is dark, and I cannot see it clearly. What color will I say it is? Perhaps I will say it is gray. When more light falls upon it, I will see it as white. Yes, but what is it in the end—gray or white? Then again, perhaps I am nearsighted or farsighted, or perhaps, for all I know, I am color-blind and the colors are altered in my eyes. So what is the thing I actually see? This is why, you know, when it comes to colors, there is no objective description, only a subjective one. We say red, green, yellow, or blue. When we ask, “Do you see this color? What color is it?” we answer, “Red.” But how do you see it, and how do I see it? We call it red on the basis of experience.
Can we define the color red? We cannot define colors. Would you like proof? It is very simple. A blind person may know many things, but has no experience of colors. Someone blind from birth does not know what they are. People say red, green, or yellow, but these words convey nothing to him. What does “red” mean? Nothing. What does this show? It shows that our knowledge is empirical. Yet empirical knowledge comes through our eyes, and what kind of eyes does each person have? At any moment, take this color red and change the lighting. Lower the intensity of these lights, and you will have a different color. So what do people do—ladies, for example, when they go shopping in fabric stores? The salesperson or merchant takes the roll of fabric. This is what they
used to do in the old days; I do not know about now, though I imagine something similar is still done. They would take it outside into the sunlight—not this artificial light, but sunlight—and the lady would look at the color in sunlight before buying it. What does this mean? The color changes. Does color actually exist? In the final analysis, you know, colors do not exist. That is the issue. Do they exist or not? I have told you that color is subjective, but it is also objective. In what way? We say that colors correspond to wavelengths. We say that red has so many angstroms, blue so many, and violet so many. Angstroms are units of measurement. In other words, we say that we have a particular wavelength. Thus we have an objective measurement.
But this objective measurement does not ultimately give us the color as our eyes experience it. So what do we finally say? What kind of knowledge do we possess—is it true knowledge, or merely subjective? How can we acquire objective knowledge? That is a problem. A little later I shall speak about man as well, and you will see that we cannot truly know him. Thus there are these three problems, and the third enters into both the first and the second: How shall I know the universe, and how shall I know man? “Enter, then, into yourself.” Enter within yourself. But how am I to enter into myself? How am I to enter into myself? I, a human being—how am I to enter? What am I to know?
What is the object of my inquiry? Man. Who is this man? To possess knowledge, I must receive a revelation, because the epistemological problem convinces me and shows me that, in the end, I cannot possess true knowledge by myself. Please observe here the limits of knowledge. Where are those arrogant people who say, “We shall know everything, learn everything, conquer everything”? My dear friends, the epistemological problem will never be solved. As long as man’s senses intervene, with all their imperfections, man will never be able to acquire objective knowledge of his surroundings. And if man himself is a mystery—to return now to anthropology—thank you.
No matter how much man comes to know about himself, he always remains a problem. What is needed? Do not be scandalized: revelation. It must be revealed to me, my dear friends, who I am as a human being. God reveals this to me, and then I possess valid and authoritative testimony about who I am. I shall show you this immediately. When psychology takes man as the object of its investigation, which man does it study? Revelation has told us that man once stood upright and then fell.
Does psychology study man in his original upright state, or fallen man? Science, of course, does not know this; psychology does not know it. We know it from Revelation. Our answer is that science investigates fallen man. But because this fallen condition is permanent in its experience, science assumes that this is genuine, authentic, normal man. Yet this is not genuine or authentic man. Why? Because he is none other than fallen man. The conclusions psychology draws from investigating man—fallen man—are unquestionably mistaken, because this is not man in his normal state.
We will unquestionably draw mistaken conclusions. I believe you understand me. Yes, immediately, then, the question arises that psychology and its conclusions are mistaken. And I have not even mentioned the fact that its conclusions contradict one another. There is a very great deal of contradiction. The very existence of these contradictions makes it clear that man is an unexplored world. We speak of the human soul and of psychology, and then we ask: Does the soul exist? For there is a psychology without a soul. Or does it exist? Yes, it does. There is also a psychology that accepts the soul. And what is the behavior of the human soul? Here we now enter a vicious circle—the question of behavior.
Conscious, subconscious; conscious, subconscious. We say that there are complexes buried in this subconscious. What a tangled mess! My dear man, what are you going to find there? What will you find? Here he says, “Enter, then, into yourself.” To discover what? To find what? So here, my dear friends, we can see very clearly that we stand before a problem—a very serious problem. Yet it is absolutely necessary and urgent for me to learn who I am. In the end, I will not learn this from psychology; I have demonstrated that to you. Nor will I learn it from science. I will learn it from divine revelation. I have demonstrated this and shown it to you very clearly.
I will learn it as God reveals it to me. So when God tells me that I am His image, what school of psychology has ever discovered that the human being is the image of God? What school of psychology has found that? I am His image. This is revelation. God will also tell me that I have a soul and a body. Who, until now, has told me that the soul exists? And how can I prove the existence of the soul? It must be revealed to me. This supplements what we were saying when answering those questions. God Himself will tell me that I have a soul. That is why Holy Scripture contains no proofs for the existence of the soul, because this is a matter of revelation—a matter of revelation. God tells me that I have a soul. And now, what is the meaning of my existence? My dear friends, these words, “Enter, then, into yourself,” are like this:
I enter this building. Once inside, I go through its rooms, one after another. I pass from one organ of the body to another. I leave the stomach and go to the heart; I leave the heart and go to the blood; from there, I go to the brain. I examine them all, passing from one room to another. In the end I ask, “Very well, why does this heart exist? Why does this brain exist? The blood circulates.” What will you say—that it circulates? Why do these things exist? Simply put, what is the meaning of existence? Why does the human being exist? I am not asking how all these things keep a person functioning, but why the whole human being exists. What is the meaning of his existence? Who will tell me that? However much we search, my dear friends, we will never discover the meaning of human existence. Never.
We always reach mistaken conclusions. If I say that there is no meaning, I immediately enter the realm of absurdity. Why, then, do I exist if there is no meaning? And since I have been fashioned with such wisdom, can it be possible that my existence has no meaning? The moment I say there is no meaning, I enter the realm of absurdity. And yet, you know, many people have said this and continue to say it, and many philosophical systems teach the same thing. If there is no meaning, then the human being has no purpose, no meaning, nothing at all. He is aimless. He came into existence by chance, then passes away, and that is all. But can our reason accept this? It is absurd. If I exist and have a destiny and a purpose, what is it? Are we perhaps born...
my dear friends, so that the meaning of my existence may be to serve in the army, marry, open a shop, acquire fields, become rich and famous, and then die? Is that the meaning of existence? Do you not think that this is terribly impoverished? Then find me something else. Let us rise a little higher. Consider those ancient religions and philosophies—Buddhism, Platonism—which say that the soul ascends to higher worlds, to the stars, and so forth. And what does the soul do there? It enters Nirvana.
Nirvana! It is said to be a state of blessedness, but there is no consciousness. My dear friends, blessedness without consciousness is inconceivable.
So is suffering without consciousness. If, for example, I enter the operating room, am put under anesthesia, and the doctors cut me open there—for my benefit, of course—what do I experience? Nothing. The same would be true if I were in Nirvana. Those who spoke about Nirvana never told us precisely what it is. They say that it is a state of supreme blessedness, but without consciousness. Why? I will show you immediately. They say that the human being becomes united with the universe and loses his personhood. Just as God in pantheism is impersonal, so individual persons also lose their personhood. But from the moment I lose my personhood—that is, my self-awareness...
by becoming united with the universe—then whether I am suffering or blessed, in relation to what am I either one? I have told you all this to show you that people search for the meaning of human existence and do not find it. It must be revealed to me, and it is revealed to us in Christ Jesus and in the Holy Spirit. Then we see who the human being is: the image of God, a child of God, who enters into blessedness consciously, with full awareness, and not into Nirvana. With full awareness, he enters into the blessedness of God and attains theosis, divinisation. This is the meaning of existence. But no science can discover it—not medicine, not psychology, not physics, no one. God reveals it to me. This, then, is of immense importance.
You understand, then, how important it is, my dear friends, for me to enter into myself. But I must stop here, because what I have told you would require much more discussion and analysis—matters that would take us many hours. So I will turn to the second half of the same sentence: “And from your own hypostasis, your very existence, understand the Craftsman.” From your own existence, come to understand the Creator. This means that I will search to discover who I am, and from there I will begin to understand my own identity.
Once I understand who I am, I will also understand the One who created me. Here I must tell you that there is a method called the cataphatic way, or affirmative theology. There are two methods by which we may know God and the human being—or, more precisely, by which we may know the human being; let me leave aside the question of knowing God for the moment. We have two methods for knowing the human being.
Both methods are sound, but each is incomplete and must be supplemented by the other. The second is more perfect than the first. Nevertheless, both are useful. The first way is this:
There is God, and I am His image. Therefore, either I will come to know the image and ascend from it to the prototype, or I will come to know the prototype and from it understand the image. Either I will go from the human being to God, or from God to the human being. There are, then, two paths. One is called cataphatic. What is the cataphatic path? I begin with knowledge of myself in order to learn who God is. And what is the other path? The apophatic path, the way of negative theology. I come to know God in order to learn who I am. As a matter of history, I will tell you that in the Christian West, because science developed...
Or rather, because science entered theological circles—and it is well known that in past centuries, though not in our own, many Western theologians also devoted themselves to science—this eventually drew the Christian West in a particular direction. The Christian West adopted the cataphatic way because many Western theologians and priests were also engaged in science. Science had, in a sense, dazzled the West, and they considered involvement in science to be something very important. This did not happen in the East, in Eastern Christianity. And so...
With certain exceptions, of course, all the Fathers of our Church were highly educated, but they did not devote themselves to the sciences. They had simply received an education. They were wholly dedicated to Christianity and nothing else. They did not pursue scientific study. Deep down, this is a weakness of the West. I must say this to you.
Today we might admire it and say, “Just look at this grandeur; how wonderful!” But it is a weakness, a deficiency. Subconsciously, it is as though we feel insecure relying solely on the cultivation of the Gospel and the faith, and so we need an additional crutch called science. Then, if our faith is ever challenged...
we can bring forward our crutch to defend it. That is why I told you that, deep down, this is a weakness. As a result, the lived experience of Christianity was not given much room to rise to great heights, though other factors also hindered it. The East did not follow this course. The East reaches great heights of holiness and spirituality because it does not occupy itself with crutches, but directly and solely with the faith. Thus the West said, “I will examine the human being in every possible way, through science and philosophy, and through this knowledge of the human being I will come to know God.” It went far astray, of course, although the method itself is not to be rejected.
If you wish, which method does Saint Cyril use? Saint Cyril successfully employs both the cataphatic and the apophatic methods together—not merely at this particular point, but throughout his whole book, throughout the Catechetical Lectures. He uses both, and he uses them successfully. This is the proper way. But the West used only the cataphatic method. Yet because it reached mistaken conclusions, or because its instruments were faulty—science continually revises its knowledge, philosophy goes astray, and observations are not always accurate—it could not form a clear image of God. The East, by contrast, said, “I will come to know God...”
the prototype, so that I may understand the antitype—that is, the human being. This apophatic method is more important and more precise. Thus a person studies the Word of God theologically and strives to know God through lived experience; and from this knowledge of God, he begins to learn who the human being is. So this brief phrase, as you have seen—“And from your own hypostasis, your very existence, understand the Craftsman”—means: from your own existence, come to know the Lord who created you. I have explained, then, that Saint Cyril uses the cataphatic method here, but he does not restrict himself to it.
He also uses the apophatic method. I have told you that the apophatic method is more important, more precise, and more truly theological. To help you understand, let me leave the subject of the human being and turn to the subject of God. I may come to know God through the purification of the heart, by the apophatic way...
I begin to see myself as nothing, as nothing at all, as something close to nonexistence, so that I may become profoundly humble and behold God. Or I may seek to know God through creation and say, “How beautiful the sun is! How beautiful, powerful, magnificent, and majestic nature is!” This is the cataphatic way, but it is incomplete. That is why you will see that the Fathers of our Church do not...
Of course, the Fathers also speak in the cataphatic, affirmative way, but chiefly in the apophatic way. By chance, I have with me a passage from Saint Isaac the Syrian, from his Twenty-Third Homily, in the old 1895 edition, page 95. He says the following. Listen carefully: “Read continually and insatiably the books of the teachers concerning the providence of God.” What are these books of the teachers? The books of natural scientists and students of nature. Read continually and without ever growing weary, “for they guide the nous, the spiritual intellect, to behold the order of God’s creatures”—the order of God’s creatures and of His works.
“They strengthen the nous through these things. They prepare it and build within it radiant understandings,” so that a person acquires bright and radiant thoughts, “and through their subtlety they lead it, in purity, toward an understanding of God’s creatures.” This is a cataphatic page. But if someone reads the whole book of Saint Isaac the Syrian, how many other pages are apophatic! You will come to know God in another way. So this first way is not excluded, but it must be completed by the other. It must be completed. It is a great thing to say to our students and our children: “My child, look at the star-filled heavens. Take a telescope and go outside to marvel at them. Take a magnifying glass and look at a flower,” and so forth. It is a great thing, but it is not sufficient.
I have explained this, then. And now Saint Cyril continues. He draws certain examples from the human body in order to leave us astonished, my dear friends. It does not matter that he does not use modern terminology. What matters are the points he makes. “What blameworthy thing has been fashioned in your body?” Tell me, he says: what condemnable thing has been created in the body? “Keep mastery over yourself, and nothing base will be found among all your members.” Maintain firm control over yourself. Be self-restrained and worthy, holding yourself in check—be the master of yourself—and nothing base, shameful, or worthless will be found in your bodily members. In other words,
are we speaking of bodily members that are base in themselves? That is a mistake. There are no base bodily members. But if a person keeps mastery over himself and is self-governing, and if he has the ruling nous as his master—“and uphold me with a governing spirit”—then he will discover that none of his members is base. Saint Cyril explains: “In the beginning Adam was naked with Eve in Paradise, but he was not cast out because of his bodily members.”
“Therefore, the bodily members are not the cause of sin; rather, those who use them wrongly are at fault. Wise is the Maker of our members.” In other words, from the beginning Adam was naked with Eve in Paradise, but he was not cast out of Paradise because he was naked. Therefore, the bodily members are not the cause of sin. The members themselves are not at fault; those who misuse them are at fault. For the Creator of the members of our body is wise. More specifically,
consider the human body. We conceal certain parts of our body, the genital region. Why do we conceal them? Adam and Eve were naked in Paradise, yet they were not ashamed, nor, Saint Cyril says, were they cast out of Paradise because they were naked. They were cast out because they transgressed God’s commandment through disobedience. It was not because they were naked. But when they fell into the Fall, God asked, “Why did you hide, Adam?” “Because I am naked,” he replied. “And who told you that you were naked?” Do you hear that? Who told you that you were naked?
Adam was not naked. He was clothed in grace, in divine glory, in the grace of God. He was not naked. So now, who told you that you were naked? And how is it that Adam now realizes he is naked, when he did not realize it before? Something, then, had departed. Therefore God replaces what had departed with garments of skin. These garments of skin mean many things; they contain an entire theology. But here, at this moment, I will take the words and the phrase in their plain sense. Garments of skin: that is, God clothed them, and from then on He told them to remain clothed. Yet the garments of skin are a substitute for that robe which we lost.
Remember the parable of the Prodigal Son: “And the father gave orders,” it says, “that they should bring the first robe.” This first robe does not refer merely to Baptism as we now know it. If you like, it is the very same robe. The robe of Baptism is the robe of divine glory that we possessed in Paradise. It is not visible now, but it will be revealed in the Kingdom of God. For in the Kingdom of God, when we take up again our former bodies, now made new, we certainly shall not have clothing. I do not know whether you have ever considered this. We shall not have garments; we shall not be clothed. Why? Simply because there will be no need for clothing—garments of skin, that is. What you are wearing is made from skins.
Is that difficult to understand? I do not mean only that some people wear leather jackets. Even what you are wearing is, in reality, from skins. What is it, after all? Let us say it is made of wool, or of something else—what is its source? An animal. So the things we wear are garments of skin. Of course, we borrow these things from...
Now, my dear friends, when man begins to take off his clothing again, this means that he is also beginning to cast off his sense of shame. There is a familiar saying, applied especially to women, that when a woman casts off her clothing, she also casts off her shame. This is well known. But when we cast off both clothing and shame, my dear friends, we finally arrive at Sodom and Gomorrah. Nudism, then—this is the digression I made in order to speak to you about nudism—is not a simple matter, nor are we merely returning to some primitive condition. We are fallen human beings, and because we are fallen, at any moment...
the downward slide is very easy. This needs no proof. One can see it very clearly and vividly in our own time: what path people take and how they behave when they cast off all modesty in this way. So, Saint Cyril says, there is nothing base in the bodily members. Use your members rightly, and nothing base will be found in them. Of course there will be nothing base. Everything God makes is wise. It is wise. We cannot say, my dear friends, that there is sin in the genital region. Let no one ever say that. God is not a servant of sinful conditions. Nor is Holy Matrimony a sin; there is nothing sinful at all in Holy Matrimony. To what Saint Cyril says, I would add this concerning Holy Matrimony:
make right use of Holy Matrimony, as God wills, and then there will be nothing sinful in it. Then, my brother, you will be able to receive Holy Communion even every day. But when I am cut off from Holy Communion, when this happens again and again, it is precisely because we do not make right use of Holy Matrimony. That is one reason. Therefore, we cannot speak of sinful bodily members, but we can speak of sin dwelling in our members. The Apostle Paul says: “Put to death, therefore, your members which are upon the earth: fornication, passion, evil desire,” and so forth. Put them to death. What does this mean? Am I literally to put my bodily members to death? Am I to make them physically dead?
They are to be dead morally, not ontologically. I am not to sterilize myself or render any of my bodily members useless; rather, I am to put them to death morally. What does this mean? They must not proceed to sin or become the seat of evil and sinful desires. Here is another passage: “Who prepared the chambers of the womb for the bearing of children? Who gave life within them to that which had no life?” Who is it, he asks, who prepared the spaces of the womb for childbearing? Who is it who gave life to what was lifeless?
“Who gave life to that which was lifeless within them”—within the womb. What is this lifeless thing? Outwardly, it is the seed, for that is what is present there, and it appears lifeless. That is, it seems to have neither soul nor life; yet there it is given life, and from that matter we see a new existence being created. I have told you many times, and I have emphasized it even in catechism class, that if there is anything majestic within creation, the summit of that majesty is the seed—the generative seed in human beings and animals, and the seed in plants. It is the seed.
What a majestic thing it is! All the wisdom of God is present there. Consider a walnut, an almond, a bean, or a lentil. All these things appear lifeless—lifeless, without life. Place them in water or in the soil, and astonishing, almost unbelievable processes begin within them. I do not know whether man will ever reach the very depths of the knowledge of the seed and learn what is accomplished within it. I do not know whether man will ever reach the end of that knowledge. As you understand, my dear friends, this is truly an immense subject.
This, then, is what he says here. Tell me: who prepared the chambers of the womb for childbearing? Tell me: who gives a soul to that which is lifeless? “Who strengthened us with sinews and bones and clothed us with skin and flesh? And as soon as the infant is born, who brings forth fountains of milk from the breasts?” I shall not translate all of this or dwell on it further, because I want to finish the paragraph. “How does the infant grow into a child, and the child into a young man, and then into a mature man, and how does that same man change again into an old man, while no one can discern the precise moment of each day’s change?” The precise change from day to day. The infant becomes a child, then a man; he grows and becomes elderly, an elder.
Who, he asks, perceives this change? Do you know what astonishing thing we might say about this? You know that every seven years—or, according to others, every three years; in any case, over a certain period of time—a person replaces all his cells. All his cells, every one; nothing remains. Here I must ask forgiveness, as I did on another occasion, because I have physicians among my listeners. Let them and everyone else forgive me if I enter their field and make mistakes in what I say. I shall tell you what I can. Not one of the old cells remains. The cells of all the organs change. Even those of the brain—everything changes; everything is renewed.
The question now arises: since all the cells change, tell me, how does a person preserve consciousness of himself throughout the whole course of his life—from infant to child, from adolescent to young man, then to old age and extreme old age, to a hundred years and beyond? How can he preserve consciousness of himself when everything changes? This means that consciousness is beyond the cells. Something else preserves this consciousness of personal identity. Do I change? It makes no difference. I remain conscious of myself. I am the same person I was when I was small: I. This I—I, I—does not undergo a change in its self-consciousness. This is a great matter. What is it? Saint Cyril asks.
Can we understand this? “How is it that one part of our food is changed into blood, another is separated for excretion, and another is changed into flesh?” This is precisely what happens, my dear friends. I take food; it enters my stomach, and from there it is distributed. This part, it is said, becomes blood; this part becomes flesh; another part becomes something else. The body receives it and acts like a good steward making a distribution. To use the language of economics, it is as though it received a budget and said: you will receive this much, you that much, and you that much. Everything must receive, in due measure and proportion, what it needs.
How does this happen? I put food inside me, and from there it is distributed in a wondrous way. The brain needs this, the blood needs that, the heart needs something else, and everything goes to its proper place. How does this happen? “Who keeps the heart moving without ceasing? Who wisely secured the delicate eyes by surrounding them with the eyelids?” Here Saint Cyril speaks about the structure of the eyes and how they are enclosed by the eyelids. My dear friends, the eyes! What is the eye? What could anyone say about it? Ophthalmologists study for many years to learn what the eye is. Have they reached the end of that knowledge? Undoubtedly not. The eye!
Just think, my dear friends, how much wisdom there is in the eye. Tell me, do not mosquitoes also have eyes? Try bringing your hand near to kill a mosquito. It flies away at once. Do you know why? Because it saw you perfectly well. The fly also has eyes. Do you know how many eyes a fly has? It has two large compound eyes, and each of them is made up of several hundred eyes. Do you know how many eyes a bee has? Two, you will tell me. But the bee’s eyes are compound, comprising a total of six thousand eyes. And the bee sees us in a way quite different from the way we see it. Just think of all these insects, with so many eyes and so many different structures. It is astonishing!
“As for the varied and wondrous structure of the eyes, even the physicians’ learned books, with all their many pages, can barely explain it.” The physicians’ wise and lengthy books tell us only a little about the eyes. “Who is it that distributes a single breath throughout the whole body? Do you see, O man, the Craftsman? Do you see the wise Creator?” Do you see the Craftsman, O man? Do you see the wise Creator? “I have spoken to you of these things only briefly, leaving out countless others”—countless things have been left unsaid—“especially the bodiless and invisible beings.”
Imagine what we might say about the angels, if there is already so much to say about human beings. Thus you must reject those who blaspheme the wise and good Craftsman. From all that has been said and read, and from whatever you yourself may discover or understand, contemplate the Creator through the greatness and beauty of created things. Then devoutly bend the knee before the Maker of all things, the Creator of both the sensible and the spiritual, of all things visible and invisible. With a grateful tongue and reverent lips, praise God unceasingly, saying with both lips and heart: “How wondrous are Your works, O Lord!”
“You have made all things in wisdom. For to You belong honor, glory, and majesty, now and unto the ages of ages. Amen.” My dear friends, God truly is wise—God is exceedingly wise. Through all that He says, does, and creates, He reveals who He is. There is an addition to the text of the Ninth Catechetical Lecture, from which I shall take just one short phrase before concluding: “Be as you were fashioned by God.” This is a precious phrase. Be as you were fashioned by God. What does that mean? Possess divine simplicity.
Divine simplicity is a profound subject. It is not something with which a person begins, but something at which one finally arrives. Simplicity belongs to those who have attained spiritual maturity. Simplicity is not merely a virtue; it is the very essence and finest fruit of all the virtues. Once a person has acquired all the virtues, then at last he will also acquire simplicity. And here Saint Cyril says: “Be as you were fashioned by God.” And how was I fashioned by God? I was fashioned rightly, and I must possess this divine simplicity so that I may see things as they truly are. What does simplicity mean? Saint Isaac the Syrian says that when you see a form, you should not imagine something else, but understand it for what it is. You see a triangle—a triangle; a circle—a circle; a square—a square. Do not look upon a member of the body and
imagine something else. Do not look upon your body and imagine something else. You must see yourself as you truly are. “Be as you were fashioned by God.” My dear friends, this is what we have said about the constitution of the human being, very briefly and at great speed.

Αυτή η αντικειμενική μέτρηση δεν μας δίνει τελικά το χρώμα, όπως το αισθανόμαστε στα μάτια μας. Και τελικά τι λέμε; Η γνώση που έχουμε τι είναι, αληθής ή υποκειμενική; Πώς μπορούμε να αποκτήσουμε αυτή τη γνώση εξ αντικειμένου; Πρόβλημα. Έτσι και τον άνθρωπο θα σας πω λίγο πιο κάτω και θα δείτε πως τον άνθρωπο δεν μπορούμε να τον γνωρίσουμε. Ευχαριστούμε. Έτσι υπάρχουν αυτά τα τρία προβλήματα. Το τρίτο μπαίνει στο πρώτο και στο δεύτερο. Πώς θα γνωρίσω το σύμπαν και πώς θα γνωρίσω τον άνθρωπο; «Είσελθε λοιπόν εις σεαυτόν», μπες λοιπόν μέσα στον εαυτό σου. Αλλά πώς θα μπω στον εαυτό μου; Πώς θα μπω στον εαυτό μου; Εγώ ο άνθρωπος, πώς θα μπω; Τι θα γνωρίσω;
το ανθρώπινο σώμα. Αποκρύπτουμε κάποια μέλη του σώματός μας, τη γεννητική περιοχή. Γιατί την αποκρύπτουμε; Ο Αδάμ και η Εύα ήσαν γυμνοί μέσα στον Παράδεισο και δεν εντρέποντο και δεν απεβλήθησαν, λέγει, του Παραδείσου διότι ήσαν γυμνοί, αλλά διότι παρέβησαν την εντολή του Θεού με παράβαση και παρακοή. Όχι λοιπόν διότι ήσαν γυμνοί. Όταν όμως, αγαπητοί μου, βρέθηκαν στην πτώση, τότε ερωτάει ο Θεός: «Γιατί κρύφτηκες, Αδάμ;» «Γιατί είμαι γυμνός», λέγει. «Και ποιος σου είπε ότι είσαι γυμνός;» Ακούτε; Ποιος σου είπε ότι είσαι γυμνός;
περί γάμου: κάνε χρήση ορθή του γάμου, όπως ο Θεός θέλει, και τότε τίποτε το αμαρτωλό δεν υπάρχει στον γάμο. Και τότε θα μπορείς να κοινωνείς, αδελφέ μου, και κάθε μέρα. Αλλά όταν κόβομαι από τη Θεία Κοινωνία, όταν, όταν, όταν, όταν, είναι ακριβώς διότι δεν κάνουμε ορθή χρήση του γάμου. Αυτός είναι ένας λόγος. Ώστε, λοιπόν, δεν μπορούμε να μιλάμε για αμαρτωλά μέλη, αλλά μπορούμε να μιλάμε για την αμαρτία που εδράζει στα μέλη μας. Ο Απόστολος Παύλος λέγει: «Νεκρώσατε οὖν τὰ μέλη ὑμῶν τὰ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς· πορνείαν, πάθος, ἐπιθυμίαν κακήν» κτλ. Νεκρώσατε. Τι συμβαίνει; Θα νεκρώσω τα μέλη μου πραγματικά; Δηλαδή θα τα κάνω νεκρά;
Ηθικώς νεκρά, όχι οντολογικώς νεκρά. Δεν θα κάνω καμία στείρωση, δεν θα κάνω καμία αχρηστοποίηση των μελών μου, αλλά θα τα νεκρώσω ηθικώς. Με άλλα λόγια, τι; Να μην προβαίνουν στην αμαρτία, να μην είναι η έδρα κακών, αμαρτωλών επιθυμιών. Μια παρακάτω θέση: «Τίς ὁ παρασκευάσας εἰς τεκνογονίαν μήτρας κόλπους; Τίς ὁ τὸ ἄψυχον ἐν αὐταῖς ἐμψυχώσας;» Ποιος είναι εκείνος ο οποίος, λέει, παρεσκεύασε τους χώρους της μήτρας για την τεκνογονία; Ποιος είναι εκείνος που εμψύχωσε το άψυχον;
