Summary

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem’s ninth Catechetical Lecture explains the Creed’s confession of God as Creator of heaven and earth, of everything visible and invisible. The magnitude, beauty, power, wisdom, and order of creation provide an analogical but necessarily limited knowledge of their Creator. Christians should study and contemplate the natural world with a purified heart, recognizing that every aspect of creation can lead them toward praise of God.

My dear friends, we are now at the ninth Catechetical Lecture of Saint Cyril, Archbishop of Jerusalem. Its title is “To Those Preparing for Illumination,” delivered in Jerusalem, on the words: “Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible.”

These words are from the Creed. In this Catechetical Lecture, he will now explain to us that God is the Maker and Creator of both heaven and earth, according to the words, “In the beginning God made heaven and earth,” and also that He is the Creator of all things visible and invisible: everything visible in the material creation, and everything invisible, such as the spiritual world—that is, the angels. This is the title of his Catechetical Lecture. Paragraph one: “It is impossible to behold God with the eyes of the flesh. For that which is bodiless cannot come within the sight of bodily eyes. The only-begotten Son of God Himself bears witness to this, saying, ‘No one has ever seen God.’ And even if, according to what is written in Ezekiel, you suppose that Ezekiel saw God...”

Do not understand this to mean that Ezekiel saw God Himself. What does Holy Scripture say? “He saw the likeness of the glory of the Lord”—not the Lord Himself, but the likeness of His glory; and not even the glory itself as it truly is. And when he saw only the likeness of the glory, and not the glory itself, he fell to the ground in fear. If the sight of the likeness of the glory filled the prophet with fear and anguish...

“If anyone attempted to behold God Himself, he would certainly lose his life, according to the saying, ‘No one shall see My face and live.’ For this reason, in His surpassing love for mankind, God stretched out heaven as a veil over His own divinity, lest we perish. These are not my words; the prophet said, ‘If You open heaven, the mountains will be seized with trembling before You and will melt.’”

I shall read just a little more—two lines. “Why are you amazed? If Ezekiel fell down when he saw the likeness of the glory, then when Gabriel, the servant and suppliant of the Lord, appeared to Daniel, did not Daniel immediately become terrified and fall upon his face? And until the angel took on the appearance of a son of man, the prophet did not dare to answer. If the mere appearance of Gabriel filled the prophets with terror, would they not all have perished if God Himself had appeared as He truly is?”

In short, it is impossible for anyone to see God with bodily eyes. For God, being bodiless, does not come within the reach of the human senses.

Jesus Christ Himself said this. The only-begotten Son of God is our witness: “No one has ever seen God.” No one has ever seen God. But Scripture says that Ezekiel saw the likeness of the glory in that well-known vision: the chariot, and God upon a throne. That throne was a kind of chariot with four wheels, arranged in a square, one wheel on each of its four sides—a strange structure, with four living creatures above the wheels. But pay attention, Saint Cyril says here: Ezekiel did not see God; he saw His glory—or rather, not even His glory, but the likeness of His glory. For it is also written, “Who can see My face and live?” For this reason God stretched heaven above us, precisely to veil His divinity. It is written, “If You open heaven,” says Isaiah 63:19, then the mountains will be seized with horror and terror and begin to tremble. And why are you amazed or perplexed if Ezekiel fell down when he saw...

the likeness of the glory of God? When Gabriel came to Daniel—Gabriel, who is a servant and suppliant of the Lord—Daniel saw him and fell to the ground in fear. If Daniel was so terrified at the sight of Gabriel, and if all the prophets were overcome with such fear when they saw either likenesses of the divine glory or servants of God, such as the angels, then how much more would this be so if anyone were ever to see the glory of God? Could he remain alive? Forgive me—I mean, if anyone saw God Himself, could he remain alive? This, my dear friends, is a brief introduction. Its purpose, in a few words—and I shall offer you a somewhat deeper analysis of this introduction—is to tell us that God is ultimately known through His creatures, and that His creatures give us a measure of His greatness, His power, His glory, His beneficence, and His love. Let us look more closely at this introduction, because it is truly worthwhile. I should tell you that Saint Cyril comments on precisely this point, and Saint Macarius of Alexandria also gives a beautiful interpretation in the first of his well-known and wonderful homilies. He interprets this same vision.

The prophets did not see the glory itself, but only the likeness of the glory—so that you may understand. And yet, of course, the glory can be beheld. In God we distinguish two things, if I may speak in this way: the essence of God, and the glory of God—that is, His divine uncreated energy. The essence is what is inward in God, while the glory is what proceeds outward from Him. No one can know the essence of God, approach it, reason it out, discuss it, or do anything of the kind.

It is utterly unknown and utterly invisible; and unto ages of ages it will always remain untouchable, unapproachable, invisible, and unknown—not only to human beings, but also to the angels, even to those angels who form the throne of God or stand around His throne. Therefore, when Holy Scripture says, “No one has ever seen God,” it is true. Christ Himself said it: no one has ever seen God, nor is anyone able to see Him. So when Holy Scripture says that no one can see God, what does it mean by “God”? It means the essence of God.

By contrast, Jesus Christ says to Thomas—to Philip: “You asked Me to show you the Father. He who has seen Me has seen the Father,” because “I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me.” Or again, John the Evangelist says in his first epistle, “We shall see Him as He is.” What does Holy Scripture mean here? In the examples I have given you, which refer to the person of Jesus Christ, we encounter the human nature of the second Person of the Holy Trinity. This is true.

We venerate the icon of Christ. I want to tell you this so that you may truly feel it, because it is exceedingly important. When we venerate the icon of Christ, we also venerate the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Would you like me to show you this from the Church’s own practice? You know the short, single-phrase form of the Jesus Prayer: “Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me.” For the sake of brevity, we do not add “Son of God.” “Lord Jesus Christ.” The prayer, of course, has both longer and various other forms. Its simplest form is: “Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me.” By “Lord” we confess the divinity of Jesus Christ. By “Jesus” we confess His humanity. Therefore...

in the name “Jesus” we express His divine-human nature, and by “Christ” we express the mission of the incarnate Son of God: He is the One anointed and appointed by God the Father for the great work of mankind’s salvation. Thus, in the three words “Lord Jesus Christ,” we find the whole theology of the person of Jesus Christ and of His work. Have you ever wondered why we cannot—or why we do not—address the prayer...

to the Father or to the Holy Spirit by saying, “Holy Father, have mercy on us; Holy Father, have mercy on us”? We do not say this. We say, “Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me.” Why? We do not mention the Father, nor do we mention the Holy Spirit. Quite simply, when we venerate the Son, we also venerate the Father and the Holy Spirit, because the Persons are consubstantial—of one essence. God is one and has one essence. This essence, then, is altogether invisible. But what did we see in Jesus Christ? First of all, we saw His Incarnation. What else can we see? We can also see the uncreated light. What is the uncreated light? It is divine uncreated energy, divine glory.

The disciples saw this glory. They saw it when Christ was transfigured on Mount Tabor. What is this glory? It is the outward manifestation of the divinity. Take note that both the essence and the divine uncreated energy of God—that is, the divine glory—are uncreated. Thus the divine uncreated energy is uncreated; and although it is uncreated, it is divinity. How does the essence of God—which is untouchable, unapproachable, and incomprehensible—communicate with created existence? Through the divine uncreated energies. Through His divine uncreated energies, which are divinity, God communicates with creation.

What we can see are the divine uncreated energies. They may be beheld both in this present life and in the life to come. Therefore, when we say, “I saw God,” we mean the divine glory, not the essence of God. This is extremely important. I beg you to keep this distinction firmly in mind. For I must also tell you that Protestants, for example, do not make this distinction—they do not distinguish between essence and divine uncreated energies. Unfortunately, neither do Roman Catholics, for that is where the matter began. And so they end by saying: “What does Holy Scripture say? We cannot see God. That settles the matter. Full stop.”

The famous dispute between Barlaam and Saint Gregory Palamas concerned precisely this question: whether or not we can see God. Saint Gregory Palamas says that we can, in the sense I explained to you earlier. The prophets, then, could have seen the divine glory. Take note that, beyond seeing this uncreated energy, there is still another way in which we may see God. Do you know what it is? God became incarnate, and from that moment we saw Him beneath the covering of the flesh. The fullness of the divinity—can you imagine it? It is astounding. The fullness of the divinity was present in the person of Jesus Christ.

The fullness of the divinity! The Apostle Paul says that in Jesus dwells “all the fullness of the divinity.” It is beyond comprehension, beyond comprehension: “all the fullness of the divinity” in a human nature. Astonishing! And how can we see God? We see Him through the human nature. In the Epistle to the Hebrews, the Apostle Paul speaks of God the Word (Logos), who became incarnate, and says concerning His body: “that is, through the veil, that is, His flesh.” What, then, is the flesh? It is the veil that conceals the divine essence. This is Christ’s human nature: a veil.

Do you remember the arrangement of Solomon’s Temple? That arrangement was not accidental; it was established by God’s command. There were the Outer Court, the Holy Place, and the Holy of Holies. The Outer Court was the courtyard. The Holy Place, where the priests served, was the temple proper. And the Holy of Holies—what today we would call the sanctuary—had no windows at all. It was dark, symbolizing the divinity, which no one can see. Before the Holy of Holies hung a veil. What was that veil? It was the flesh of the incarnate Son of God...

which was torn when He was crucified. Christ’s flesh was torn upon the Cross when they drove in the nails. And when they nailed Him there, the veil of the Temple—the type—was also torn in two. What did this reveal? It revealed many things, including this: the reality signified by the veil, namely the flesh of Jesus, was being torn only a short distance away, outside the walls of Jerusalem. In other words, Jesus died upon the Cross. These are truly astounding Mysteries. And so we also see that, although the prophets did not behold the glory itself—which, I repeat, could indeed be beheld—they saw instead the...

only a likeness of the glory. To give you some idea, what does “likeness” mean? Let us say a reflection. Here is an example—how else can I put it? Suppose there is an object reflected in a mirror. I cannot see the object itself because something blocks my view; there is a partition between us. I am standing where I cannot see the object, but I can see its reflection in the mirror. When you drive your car, you see the car behind you in the rearview mirror. You do not see the car directly, but you see its reflection. So here too, so to speak, we see a reflection, a likeness of the glory of God. But this introduction raises a question: since we cannot see God, are we laboring in vain

when we seek knowledge of God? No, he says, we are not laboring in vain. And now the Holy Father explains—for he must expound the teaching that God is the Maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. In the second paragraph he says: “It is therefore impossible to see the divine nature with bodily eyes.” It is impossible for anyone to see the divine nature with physical eyes. “But from the works of God it is possible to form some conception of His power, according to Solomon, who says: ‘For from the greatness and beauty of created things, their Creator is seen by analogy.’” He did not say simply that the Creator is seen from created things; he added the words “by analogy.”

For the greater a person’s contemplation of created things becomes, the greater God appears to him; and when deeper contemplation lifts up his heart, he receives a greater conception of God. What does Solomon say? This is Wisdom of Solomon 13:5. Let us take Solomon’s passage: “For from the greatness and beauty of created things”—that is, from the greatness and beauty of creation—“their Creator is seen by analogy.” You see: their Creator, the One who made them, their Maker and originator. Pay attention to one crucial phrase: “by analogy.” What does “by analogy” mean?

It means according to a correspondence. But what does that mean here? Pay attention. Within His created works, God has given us only indications of who He is. From these indications, and according to the reach of my imagination and the strength of my spiritual understanding, I begin to grasp something of who God is. Let us begin. God is mighty. Of course, if someone told us to lift the earth, we could not lift it. Nor could we lift the stars. If you take unsophisticated people—not simple people, but people of limited understanding—and show them the sky,

the human eye can see perhaps six or seven thousand stars. That is how many are visible to the naked eye, naturally the larger and nearer ones, however you wish to put it. Such a person will say, “Well, those are the stars.” Indeed, people in ancient times believed that they were little nails, silver nails fixed into the arch, the dome of heaven—like the little shining ornaments and stars placed on the ceilings of very luxurious halls. Something like that. They could not conceive that these were entire worlds. So if we take an unsophisticated person and say, “Look how vast the heavens are,” he cannot imagine within himself how vast they truly are, because he does not possess much knowledge. He will, of course, say, “Yes, they are vast.”

Then we shall tell him, “Consider this: if God made this vast world, how great must He be?” But now let us change the picture. Let us say that this vault of heaven contains not merely six or seven thousand stars, but trillions of stars, an immense multitude, and that the human eye has never reached the boundary of the universe. And when we add that each star may be far larger than our sun, while our sun is, let us say, one million three hundred thousand times larger than our earth,

the human mind begins to reel and say, “What is happening here?” The scale of the analogy has grown. It has grown because I now possess broader and deeper knowledge. Would you like another example? How mighty must God be to have made this universe? Let us take one gram of matter. The illustration I am about to give you is very old, from the days when I was still at school—very old indeed. I do not know what figure we would use today. Let us take one gram of matter. This matter contains energy. To make my point, my watch weighs much more than one gram; it is actually quite heavy. What energy might be hidden within it?

For the sake of comparison, I shall take one gram. If I release the energy contained in one gram of matter, it will yield as much energy as twenty thousand tons of petroleum would produce in a single instant. Frightening! Imagine a tank holding twenty thousand tons of petroleum catching fire. What a blaze that would be! What an explosion! Yet that is the energy in one gram of matter. How many grams of matter does our earth contain? And by analogy, how much energy is hidden in the stars and in the entire universe? The energy of the universe, my beloved, is beyond comprehension—utterly beyond comprehension.

I now have a still deeper picture of the vastness and power of the universe. The more fully I understand things through scientific knowledge, the more I can judge by analogy who God is. Thus, whatever belongs to God—beauty, power, wisdom, and love—I can discern from created things, but always by analogy. Therefore, I can never attain the absolute fullness of the knowledge of God’s attributes,

but only what can be known by analogy from His created works. This is the meaning of the passage Saint Cyril uses to explain the matter to us.

“Do you wish to know that it is impossible to comprehend the nature of God?” This is paragraph three. Do you wish to understand that no one can comprehend God’s nature? Pay attention. The Three Holy Youths in the furnace, he says, were singing hymns to God and saying, “Blessed are You.” Here “blessed” means glorified. “You who look upon the abysses.” Do you know what an abyss is? The word means something with no bottom. That is called an abyss. The universe, then, is an abyss. Does it have a bottom? Where does it end?

So You are the glorified One who looks down upon and sees all things from above; yet You are not outside the universe, for You are also within it, being present everywhere. “You who look upon and watch over the abysses, You who sit upon the cherubim.” You who sit upon the cherubim. And Saint Cyril says: “Tell me the nature of the cherubim, and then I will tell you who He is who sits upon the cherubim.” What can we say about the cherubim—about these spiritual intellects, these spirits? Tell me what the cherubim are, and I shall tell you who He is who sits upon them. It is impossible. A little further on, he refers again to Ezekiel’s vision and says:

“Each had faces: one of a man, another of a lion, another of an eagle, and another of an ox.” Each of them has six wings and eyes all around. These, they say, are the cherubim who form the throne of God. Comprehension is impossible. There is only one thing left for us to do: to glorify God. Nothing else—to glorify God. For this reason, I would say that even apart from their being Christian, wise people, even pagans

or anyone else, when through their wisdom and scientific knowledge they behold creation,

cannot possibly remain atheists. You know that atheism is a pathology. A person who can penetrate deeply into creation cannot be an atheist. He may not know who God is, certainly; but for him to say, “I am an atheist; there is no God,” is literally irrational. Consequently, the person who says, “I am an atheist,” is ill and needs a psychiatrist.

Knowledge of God through creation is, of course, not precise. It might have been precise, or at least could have been, but it is not, because the human person became corrupted. We have natural revelation, and we also have supernatural revelation. Natural revelation is creation. The Apostle Paul says in either the first or the eighth chapter of Romans—it does not matter at this moment—that human beings are without excuse, because God revealed Himself through His created works. And for you to say that God is the sun,

or even to say that God does not exist, shows how far you have fallen and leaves you without excuse before God if you believe such a thing. Thus, the phenomenon of idolatry does not amount to atheism in the broad sense—not in the Christian sense, but in the broad sense. It is not atheism, yet neither does it possess an accurate understanding of reality. Because the human person became corrupted, and because human understanding was darkened by the Fall, man confuses God with created things. For this reason, supernatural revelation became necessary: God Himself had to come and reveal Himself directly,

and tell us what He wished us to know. Therefore, that ancient and beautiful saying is very important: God opened before us two books, the book of Nature and the book of Holy Scripture, so that we might know Him. We cannot remain with the book of Nature alone; we must go on to the book of Holy Scripture. There we find the correction of all that the darkened human understanding fails to grasp. And now, my beloved, we come to the tenth paragraph, where he says: “These things are told to us because of the sequence of the faith”—because of the sequence in which the faith is confessed.

“We believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible, so that we may remember that He is the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ and that He is the One who made the heavens and the earth, and so that we may guard ourselves against the deviations of godless heretics, who have dared to speak wickedly of the all-wise Craftsman of this entire world. With bodily eyes they see, but the eyes of their understanding have been hardened.” This is so that we may stand firm against the heretics who boldly speak against God. I am putting it very generally. In the paragraphs that follow, my beloved, Saint Cyril describes various aspects of creation at some length.

His descriptions are so beautiful. Although their scientific knowledge belongs to the fourth century after Christ, they are deeply appealing and greatly edifying. Consider the profoundly ascetic Saint Isaac the Syrian, of whom one might say that he concerns himself only with the heights of the heart and soul. Yet in his collected works he says: “Read the books of those who study nature with an insatiable desire, for there you will find abundant knowledge and great benefit concerning God.” If a father of nepsis, of watchfulness, can speak in this way, it is very significant. Nor is it unrelated...

It is no accident that Basil the Great devoted some ten homilies to interpreting Moses’ account of the six days of creation, the Hexaemeron. There we see how much Basil the Great knew, by the standards of his time, about both the animal and plant kingdoms. What do you think, my beloved? If knowledge of creation had no value or importance, why would Holy Scripture begin with the creation of all things, and describe it in some detail? If Holy Scripture were concerned only with things that are purely spiritual, it could simply have said:

“In the beginning God made heaven and earth.” We would thus have learned that God made everything, and Scripture could then have moved on to other spiritual matters. But it does not do that. Instead, it gives us a detailed account: first, how the waters were divided; then when the plants appeared, how the animals were made, and how man was created. All this shows that the things of creation are not foreign to the spirit of Holy Scripture. How could they possibly be foreign to it? I say this because some people supposedly wish to concern themselves only with spiritual things. If you say to them, “Look at that beautiful sunset! Look at the sun among the clouds as it sets. What beauty!” they may answer:

“That does not interest me.” It does not interest you? Yet it possesses such beauty! Of course, this alone cannot compel you to believe in God, nor will it take you very far upward, because Holy Scripture is also necessary. But does it not help you at all? There is just one observation I must make here. You cannot truly see nature while your heart remains impure. I want to emphasize this especially and dwell on the following point: if we keep an impure heart, we will see many imperfections in creation, as well as certain strange things that may even cause us to stumble.

With a filthy and impure heart, we will look upon the mating of animals and imagine that it is beneath God the Creator. If we look at the digestive systems of human beings and animals, we may likewise say that these things are beneath a spiritual God, who is unapproachable and intangible. This line of reasoning is where Plato arrived. It is also how all the heretics and all the Gnostics—about whose Gnosticism I have spoken to you—reached their conclusions. Their souls were impure.

My beloved, neither the waste produced by the digestive system nor the reproductive organs are in any way unworthy of God. Later, when discussing the creation of the human body, we shall hear Saint Cyril say: “Nothing is unworthy of God. Nothing at all. No member of the human body, nor even sexual union, is in any way improper for God the Creator.” If these things seem improper to us, it is because we ourselves are imperfect and possess an impure soul and an impure heart. When I was an adolescent, I went through the very crisis I am describing to you now. When I learned certain things, I could not understand them.

I could not reconcile them with the majesty and holiness of God. I simply could not reconcile the two; everything seemed turned upside down to me. The reason was simply that man had come to look upon all these things with an evil eye. That is where the fault lies; the fault is not in creation. Of course, much could be said about this, but I shall confine myself to this one point: we must purify our hearts. This is why the ascetics… Let me clarify something—not actually correct it, but simply add to it. Earlier I said that if you tell someone, “Look at that beautiful sunset,” he may answer, “That does not interest me.” Yes, if he always says, “That does not interest me,” it is a very bad sign.

But the person who undertakes the spiritual struggle to purify his heart does this: he turns away for a time from contemplating creation and turns inward, in order to purify himself. This may take several years, at least before he reaches a reasonably satisfactory level. Then, when he perceives some measure of purity in his heart, insofar as this is possible, he turns outward once again, my beloved. I shall give you the example of Anthony the Great. When Anthony the Great withdrew into the desert, he remained there for a full eighty-five years. He left at the age of twenty and lived to be one hundred and five. For twenty years he shut himself inside a Roman fortress, something like the fortifications the Germans left us here in Greece—machine-gun emplacements and similar structures near certain railway stations. It was a kind of fortress, a Roman building there in the Egyptian desert of Nitria, which had been abandoned and had fallen into ruin. Anthony the Great lived alone within that fortress for twenty years. After he had disciplined himself there and attained purity of heart, he came out and began receiving visitors.

Only then did he turn outward. This is a beautiful example, a vivid image that helps us understand that we can see nature justly and correctly only when our eyes have changed. And our eyes change when the heart is purified. Saint Cyril therefore proceeds to tell us certain things about God’s creation. He begins with the universe: “What fault can they find with this greatest work of God, when they ought to stand amazed as they contemplate the vast expanses of the heavens? They ought to worship Him who established heaven like a vault, who fashioned the substance of heaven from the fluid nature of the waters. For God said, ‘Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters,’” and so forth. I shall not read the entire paragraph.

I shall dwell on only two points from it. Here he begins with the greatest things and afterward moves on to the smaller ones. He speaks about the vault of heaven.

He speaks of the vast expanses of the heavens, the depths of the heavens and of the universe. Then he speaks about the waters and the clouds. Indeed, how many things we know about the universe today—far more, naturally, since the invention of the telescope. When the telescope came into use, we saw things previously unknown to us, just as the microscope revealed unknown things in the small world. Astonishing things!

My beloved, the science of the heavens, the science of astronomy, is a very beautiful and fascinating science. We may not be able to devote ourselves fully to it, of course; it requires a great deal of mathematics, much knowledge, and much time. Yet I think we can occasionally read something about it—an article in a newspaper or magazine, or a specialized book on astronomy. We should always be reading something. We have much to be benefited by. At least let us learn about our own neighborhood: what the Earth is, what our planets are, how they revolve around the sun, how the seasons are formed, and the various phenomena occurring here in our own little cosmic neighborhood—our sun and its planets, and so forth.

If you wish, we can go a little farther, to the galaxies of the heavens, and consider how the universe is understood today. It is said that the universe is expanding, and there are theories about whether the universe was born in a single… These are theories, of course, but even in them we perceive beauty. Some have come to say that the universe came into being in a single instant. Take note: the universe came into being in one instant. This is one theory, one view. Its coming into being was not progressive; only its unfolding is progressive. Today we observe the galaxies moving away from one another: an opening out, a continual expansion at a dizzying speed.

One says, “This universe is growing; it keeps growing and growing.” From these speeds we can, of course, estimate the age of the universe—how old it is. Naturally, we can determine the age of the Earth and of our sun with much greater precision. These are beautiful things. Of course, we have even weighed the Earth—do not imagine that we placed it on a scale! The Earth can be weighed without being put on a scale; that is not difficult. We have weighed and measured it—not only its surface area and volume, but also its mass. We have weighed and measured everything. These are important things. Anyone with genuine interests will read about all this. Why, my beloved, should we read foolish, idiotic romantic novels?

Why should we sit watching pornographic videos on television and who knows what else, when so many beautiful things exist? My beloved, give your children these beautiful things to read. Give them wholesome books. All these things truly contain health within them. I cannot tell you that you should give your children only religious books. There are so many beautiful books, so very many. In this way your children will gain knowledge and receive direction toward a noble purpose. They will become worthy and healthy human beings, and they will think rightly. This is what Saint Cyril tells us about heaven, which he says God established: “He who established the heavens like a vault.” This is the heavenly dome. Thank you.

He speaks about the waters. Further on, he will speak about fluidity as well as solidity. He speaks about hail and also about the clouds. Notice this: he observes that water has the properties of existing in a solid, liquid, and gaseous state. Then he says what an astonishing thing it is to behold liquid water: “He who, beyond all expectation, fashioned the heavens from the fluid nature of the waters.” This entire mass of water is held high above us.

The clouds! Have you considered the wisdom with which God made water? Have you ever thought about it? Have you considered, my beloved, that when it snows there is an immense volume and weight of water? How many roofs it brings down! And yet all that weight of water was up there above us. How was it held there? In another form, as vapor. How, then, was God to water the Earth? He gave water the property of becoming vapor, rising high into the air, and then falling again to water the Earth. What wisdom! How beautiful! Marvel at it! Notice also that water becomes ice and snow.

Have you seen snow crystals? Plato used to say, “God is always doing geometry.” Indeed, these crystals can be seen even with the naked eye, and far more clearly if you use a simple magnifying glass that enlarges ten times. A lens reveals beautiful things, you see—these geometrical crystals. “God is always doing geometry.” The only qualification is that we must not understand this in a pantheistic way, but must understand that God is transcendent. Do you see? God does geometry. What are those forces that cause every molecule of water to take on a geometrical shape? How did each molecule of water receive this command? What structure did God place within water

so that it assumes and forms such a crystal? And the crystal is not always the same. There are many forms of these crystals, perhaps ten or fifteen or thereabouts. We commonly know of about six, but there are more—some ten or fifteen crystalline forms. How can all this… And is it not astonishing that water expands when it freezes? It is unique in this respect: when water freezes it expands, whereas other things contract as they freeze. This is supremely wise. Could this possibly be accidental? Thus we see ice floating. Indeed, because if lakes, oceans, and seas at the North and South Poles froze throughout, my beloved, then the entire lake, the whole body of water, would have to freeze solid.

What would happen then to the life within it? It would be destroyed. But life is preserved beneath the ice because the ice floats to the surface, having a lower specific gravity. All this reveals immense wisdom and immense love. This is why we so often rejoice when it snows. We delight in it, go outside to play, and have snowball fights. Of course, when someone grows very old, he may begin to say, “Oh no, it has snowed,” because the cold troubles his rheumatism and arthritis. But who does not love the snow? Young and old alike rejoice in it. We open the window one morning and see that it has snowed. The city is white, or the fields are white, and we say, “Ah, snow! How beautiful!” And I would tell you:

Starting from the wonder we feel at the sight of snow, let us go a little deeper. Let us behold the wisdom of God, the love of God, and the providence of God, and let us glorify God. In other words, let us see Him everywhere, in all God’s creatures, through which we can understand Him analogically, by analogy, as the Wisdom of Solomon says. Saint Cyril also considers the heavenly bodies. What should we marvel at, he asks? The sun, which appears to be a small vessel—small only to our sight, of course—and yet has the power to give light. The same is true of the moon. What can I say about this now, my beloved?

He says: “Observe also how the days succeed one another in orderly fashion: they grow longer in summer and shorter in winter, while in spring and autumn they grant one another equal spans of time,” and so on. In short, there is the sun, which gives life upon the earth. But life is not given by some sun-god; it is given by God, who created the sun. Do you want to see what a person darkened in understanding is like? I have said it countless times, and I will say it once more. Freemasonry, or Masonry, believes that the life-giving power—the god—is the sun, the Great Architect of the Universe.

When it speaks of “the Great Architect of the Universe”—abbreviated M.A.T.S. in Greek—it means nothing other than the sun. And its various philosophical myths, which serve to establish what in Christianity we would call doctrines, are the so-called philosophical myths of Freemasonry, such as the myth of Hiram and the myth of Osiris, and so forth. They are nothing but nature worship. They are an interpretation of the sun’s presence as the force that gives life to the earth. Do you see what happens when the soul is hardened and the eyes are darkened before the created work? The eyes are blind; they cannot see. But the believer, the Christian who reads Holy Scripture, sees the sun...

and is led through it to God the Creator, rejoicing in the sun just as he rejoices in the moon. What can I say about the marvelous movements of the earth? Through these many movements—though, of course, the principal ones are not very numerous—when the earth rotates on its axis, it gives us the cycle of day and night; and when it revolves around the sun, it gives us the seasons. Thus we have summer, winter, autumn, and spring. You see, nothing is static. All this is truly the wisdom and love of God. We shall, of course, continue—especially when Saint Cyril speaks about the formation of the human body. I would very much like you to hear that.

That is our subject for today. Each of you senses within yourself how great God is, how beautiful God is, and how wise God is. And this God is our Father and our Creator.

Τω γαρ μείζον έκαστον φαίνεται Θεός, όσο αν μείζονος θεωρίας των κτισμάτων επιλάβηται ο άνθρωπος, και όταν δια της μείζονος θεωρίας υψωθεί την καρδία, μείζονα και περί Θεού λαμβάνει φαντασία. Τι λέγει ο Σολομών; Είναι Σοφία Σολομώντος 13,5. Για πάρε με το χωρίο του Σολομώντος. «Εκ γαρ μεγέθους και καλλονής κτισμάτων», δηλαδή από το μέγεθος και την ομορφιά των δημιουργημάτων, «αναλόγως ο γενεσιουργός αυτών θεωρείται», βλέπετε, ο γενεσιουργός αυτών, αυτός που τα έφτιαξε, ο ποιητής, ο γενεσιουργός. Προσέξτε μία κρίσιμη λέξη: «αναλόγως». Τι θα πει «αναλόγως»;

αρχίζει να θολώνει το μυαλό του ανθρώπου και να λέει: «Τι γίνεται εδώ;». Τώρα η αναλογία μεγάλωσε. Η αναλογία μεγάλωσε, γιατί τώρα έχω μια ευρυτέρα και βαθυτέρα γνώση. Θέλετε ακόμη ένα δείγμα; Πόσο δυνατός να είναι ο Θεός για να κάνει αυτό το σύμπαν; Παίρνουμε ένα γραμμάριο ύλης. Η εικόνα που θα σας πω είναι πολύ παλιά, από τον καιρό που ήμουν στα θρανία. Πολύ παλιά. Τώρα δεν ξέρω τι θα λέγαμε. Παίρνουμε ένα γραμμάριο ύλης. Αυτή η ύλη έχει μια ενέργεια. Αυτό που θέλω να πω, το ρολόι μου δεν είναι ένα γραμμάριο, είναι αρκετά βαρύ μάλιστα. Αρκετά βαρύ. Τι ενέργεια μπορεί να κρύβει αυτό;

«Θέλεις γνώναι ότι Θεού φύσιν καταλαβείν είναι αδύνατον;» Παράγραφος 3. Θέλεις να γνωρίσεις ότι είναι αδύνατο να καταλάβει κανείς τη φύση του Θεού; Πρόσεξε. Οι τρεις παίδες μες στο καμίνι, λέγει, υμνολογούσαν τον Θεό και έλεγαν: «Ευλογητός είσαι». Ευλογητός θα πει δοξασμένος. «Ο επιβλέπων αβύσσους». Ξέρετε τι θα πει άβυσσος; Θα πει α και βυθός, θα πει εκείνο που δεν έχει βυθό. Αυτό λέγεται άβυσσος. Δηλαδή το σύμπαν είναι άβυσσος. Έχει βυθό; Πού τελειώνει;

Λέει κανείς, μεγαλώνει αυτό το σύμπαν, μεγαλώνει, μεγαλώνει. Μπορούμε ακόμη με αυτές τις ταχύτητες να προσδιορίσουμε βέβαια και την ηλικία του σύμπαντος. Πόσο χρονών είναι η ηλικία, πόσο χρονών είναι το σύμπαν. Βεβαίως, πολύ παραπάνω μπορούμε να ξέρουμε την ηλικία της Γης και του ηλίου μας. Είναι ωραία. Βεβαίως τη ζυγίσαμε τη Γη, μην μου πείτε πως τη βάλαμε σε μια ζυγαριά. Ε, ζυγίζεται η Γη χωρίς να μπει στη ζυγαριά, δεν είναι δύσκολο. Τη ζυγίσαμε, τη μετρήσαμε, όχι μόνο την έκτασή της, όχι μόνο τον όγκο της, αλλά και το βάρος. Όλα τα έχουμε ζυγίσει, τα έχουμε μετρήσει, είναι σπουδαία. Κανείς, όταν πράγματι έχει ενδιαφέροντα, όλα αυτά θα διαβάζει. Γιατί να διαβάσουμε, αγαπητοί μου, ανόητα, βλακώδη, ερωτικά μυθιστορήματα;

από τον θαυμασμό που έχουμε για την παρουσία του χιονιού, να βαθύνουμε λίγο περισσότερο. Να δούμε τη σοφία του Θεού, την αγάπη του Θεού, την πρόνοια του Θεού και να δοξολογήσουμε τον Θεό. Δηλαδή παντού να βλέπουμε, σε όλα τα δημιουργήματα του Θεού, των οποίων θα μπορούμε να καταλαβαίνουμε αναλόγως, κατά αναλογίαν, όπως λέγει η Σοφία Σολομώντος. Αλλά ακόμη, είδε και τα ουράνια σώματα. Τι να θαυμάσεις, λέει; Τον Ήλιο, ο οποίος είναι ένα μικρό σκεύος, κατά το φαινόμενο εννοείται, και ο οποίος έχει τη δύναμη να φωτίζει. Όπως και η Σελήνη το ίδιο. Τι να πω τώρα εδώ, αγαπητοί μου;
