Summary

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem’s Eighth Catechesis develops the Creed’s confession of one God as Father and Pantokrator, the ruler and sustainer of all things. Christians were persecuted as traitors because their refusal to worship the emperor challenged the religious basis of unity in the Roman Empire. Pantokrator means that God governs bodies and souls alike and is present in heaven, on earth, and in Hades, so no part of creation lies outside His authority.

We find ourselves, my dear friends, at Saint Cyril of Jerusalem’s Eighth Catechesis. Its heading reads: “For those being illumined in Jerusalem, a teaching on the Pantokrator, the Almighty Ruler of All. A reading from Jeremiah: ‘The great and mighty God, the Lord great in counsel and mighty in works, the Pantokrator, the Lord of great renown,’ and so on.” This is the heading of the Eighth Catechesis. As I always remind you, these catecheses do nothing other than expound the Creed. After the words, “I believe in one God,”

comes “the Father,” which was the subject of the previous catechesis, where we considered its meaning under three headings. Then comes “the Pantokrator, the Almighty.” “I believe in one God, the Father, the Pantokrator.” This, then, my dear friends, is the subject Saint Cyril will unfold for us in this catechesis. Let us continue from the first paragraph.

“By believing in one God, we cut off every error of polytheism, using this confession as a weapon against the Greeks and against every opposing force of the heretics. And by adding, ‘in one God, the Father,’ we contend with those of the circumcision, who deny the only-begotten Son of God.”

“For you heard yesterday that, even before we set forth clearly the teaching concerning our Lord Jesus Christ, the very word ‘Father’ already showed that He is the Father of a Son. Thus, just as we understand that He is God, so we must also understand that He has a Son. And to this we add that He is also the Pantokrator, the Ruler of All.”

By saying, he explains, that we believe in one God, we turn toward the Greeks in order to cut off the error of polytheism. By saying that the one God is the Father, we turn toward those of the circumcision—that is, toward the Jews—to tell them that God is the Father of an only-begotten Son. Here, then, we see more clearly that Saint Cyril is also making an apologetic defense as he catechizes. Apologetics, of course, appeared very early within the Church, as we see in his words here:

“the error of polytheism, using this confession as a weapon against the Greeks,” and so on. I would like to say something about this apologetic work—and it is worth saying, as you will see. The Church has always had her apologetics, her work of refutation, and so forth. What does that mean? The Apostle Peter says somewhere: “Always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you for a reason concerning the hope that is in you.” Christianity is called “hope”; it is one of Christianity’s names. And, he says, we must always be ready to give an answer to everyone who asks us to explain our hope—that is, Christianity.

There must therefore be proper instruction and preparation for making a defense. The very word “defense” is already found in the New Testament. Later, of course, apologetics took on a broader character, because Christians had to answer both Jews and Greeks. It therefore assumed different forms according to the need. If, for example, someone were addressing a Jew, he would use the prophets. If he were addressing Greek pagans, he would draw upon elements of Greek philosophy and their polytheistic religion, setting against them what is found in the New Testament and the Old Testament—not so much the prophetic material as other kinds of evidence. This approach created—notwithstanding that every believer is an apologist, as I showed you from the Apostle Peter—a distinct body of apologists, because such apologists were needed. We say, “Saint Justin Martyr, the philosopher and apologist.” He is called a philosopher because he was a philosopher before he came to know Christianity. After coming to know Christianity and seeing the irrational accusations made by Christianity’s enemies, he was compelled to offer a defense. He wrote two Apologies: one addressed to the Emperor and the other to the Roman Senate.

Saint Justin Martyr was, of course, martyred. What he said was not heeded. In fact, in the work addressed to the Senate, I think—or perhaps to the Emperor; I do not remember whether it is the first or the second Apology—he concludes as follows: If what Christians believe is wise and worthy—and he had demonstrated that Christians were neither evildoers nor criminals—then follow it yourselves. But if it seems foolish and senseless to you, then let them live as foolish and senseless people.

After all, might we not say that a person even has the right to be foolish? Must everyone necessarily be intelligent? Does a person not have the right to be simple-minded? Very well, then: consider us fools and leave us in peace.

The pagans saw Christianity as a grave threat to themselves, particularly because the Emperor’s position was endangered. The unity of the Empire was also endangered, because it was an unequal gathering of different peoples, languages, and religions. All these disparate groups were held together by one thing: the worship of the Emperor. The Emperor was deified and worshipped as a god. Christianity, however, came and said, “No, no. We cannot worship the Emperor, but only the true God.” The very presence of Christians was therefore an act of resistance.

Because the Christian position was seen as undermining the Empire, Christians were brought before the courts under the most terrible accusation: “high treason.” Why? Do you understand why? Because they were considered people who plotted against the security of the state. High treason—and the law, of course, prescribed death. This is why we have the martyrdom of Christians. I do not know whether you were aware of this. Why were Christians martyred? For what reason? Other people could say a thousand foolish and senseless things, and so forth. Why were they not martyred? This was the reason: Christians were branded, as I told you, as traitors guilty of high treason, directed against the Emperor and

the Roman state. That is how, as I told you, the apologists arose. Apologetics has naturally never been absent from Christianity, although in every age it understandably takes on its own particular character. If we live in a scientific age, apologetics may naturally take on a certain scientific coloring. If we must argue against the theory of evolution, the theory of spontaneous generation, and so forth, it may be natural for a time to use evidence from science itself—to strike these theories, as it were, with their own stones.

We may use science itself. Nevertheless, I would like to tell you this: although such evidence can be useful for a moment—and for a moment it may help certain people—if we wish to be entirely honest and examine the matter more carefully, we must admit that this kind of Christian apologetics is still not right. Little by little, Christian apologetics went off course because it was swept along by these currents. Let me explain how this happened.

Particularly during the last century, scientific achievements experienced what we might call a great surge, and materialism prevailed. There had also been an unhappy history in Europe involving science and the Church. Science came to believe that it had to free itself from the grip, so to speak, of the Church and Christianity. Yet Christianity was not to blame at all—absolutely not. If certain people had mishandled these matters, Christianity itself was not at fault. People thought that the opportunity had finally come to attack Christianity with the stones of science. “We discovered this; we discovered that. Throw the stones!” They wanted Christianity to be overwhelmed, to disappear, and to be

dismantled. Christianity, of course, had to defend itself and resist; it had to do something. So it took up the same weapon—the weapon of science—to strike back at these various theories. In this way, a climate of scientism arose within Christianity. At certain times this climate assumed unacceptable and dangerous proportions, and this is also happening here in Greece.

In the name of this apologetics, then, we forgot the essence of Christianity and its true dimensions. We began to quarrel and contend within the narrow confines of scientism, until even the form of Christianity we sought to live acquired a scientific coloring. I will make a public confession at this moment: it was a terrible struggle for me to free myself from this scientism. A terrible struggle—I tell you the truth. Precisely because I too lived and found myself in such an environment, I now tell you these things. They are not merely my own observations; these tendencies have already been examined and condemned. If you doubt this, let us return to Christianity and go back to its roots. Then we will understand, my dear friends, that Christianity is self-sufficient.

Christianity has no need to sit and quarrel with science, arguing about one claim or another. If you have noticed, throughout all our talks—apart from this clarification I have just made—we do not take up subjects merely to say, “Science says this,” or, “Such-and-such a scientist says that.” Only exceptionally and rarely might we mention something of this kind. Christianity is self-sufficient. Are you willing, my friend, to believe? Then you will believe. Are you unwilling? I will not run to outside evidence to make you believe. The subject matters are different. Christianity is one thing and science another. Their

subject matters are entirely different. Science concerns itself with the world that can be scientifically known, and it uses observation, research, experiment, and reason. Christianity, however, concerns the way we are to live and how the world will be changed. Which world? The world in its very being, ontologically. Science investigates today and says, “What is water? Ah, hydrogen and oxygen.” Christianity says, “What now exists as hydrogen and oxygen will become something else when the world is changed.” Its present mode of being, in the form it now has, is not my ultimate concern, because it will become something else. Tell me, then, how am I supposed to speak to another person now and make him a Christian? Furthermore,

can I use experiment in Christianity? I cannot even use logic in the same way, because I would inevitably fall into rationalism. Instead, I address the person and set faith before him. Do you believe? Knowledge will come after faith, and this knowledge is not scientific knowledge but another kind of knowledge. It is supernatural knowledge. The believer is not called to know the created world, which is the subject of science, but to know the Creator of the world, who cannot be investigated by scientific methods. This is why I told you that modern apologetics has taken a wrong turn. Of course, this has now been understood, and Christian apologetics is beginning to change direction once again.

If we truly wish to see examples of apologetics, we need only look to the Fathers of our Church and read them. There we will find these elements of apologetics, as we do, for example, in Saint Cyril of Jerusalem. You see how he draws upon the Gospel and Holy Scripture in order to defend the faith. All this has been a brief introduction to his statement that we turn toward the Greeks to cut off the error of polytheism and silence them, and also toward the Jews, to silence them concerning their own error. Before I continue, however, after this brief introduction, I would like to tell you something more:

You will often come across the term “Greeks” in the writings of the Fathers of our Church and in other books and works. Originally, the term “Greek”—though I certainly cannot explore the whole subject, which is vast and perhaps extremely important—was used to designate the Greek tribes that occupied this familiar region where we too live today: the Greek peninsula.

The Ionians, the Dorians, the Aeolians, the Achaeans—all those who came here were Greek tribes. Eventually they were united. They already shared a common language, with differences only in dialect.

They came to be known collectively as Greeks. I will not explain how or why they received that name, because it is a vast subject. I will only mention that the name “Greek” came from one of Noah’s descendants. I cannot remember his name at the moment, because I am speaking without notes, simply saying what comes to mind. So do not expect me to tell you very much; I am telling you what I can. That is the root of the name. Holy Scripture leads us to accept that the Greeks descended from him. It says so in the book of Genesis when it refers to the Greeks. We truly descend from this descendant of Noah—somewhere around a grandson of Noah, or something of that sort. Holy Scripture also tells us where the Greeks settled.

It tells us the regions in which the Greeks settled. That is where our name comes from. Later, however, during the Roman Empire, Christianity appeared. The entire known world at that time bore the stamp of Hellas, first through Alexander the Great and then under the Romans. Although the Romans had conquered the known world, the Greek language remained very widespread. Because so many people remained in unbelief and idolatry, the term “Greek” gradually became identified—and I want you to pay attention here—with the meaning “pagan.”

When the discourses, homilies, or expressions of the Fathers of our Church refer to the Greeks, they do not mean ethnic Greeks; they mean pagans. For example, Saint Athanasius the Great wrote a discourse entitled Against the Greeks. Against the Greeks! At first that might seem strange. Saint Athanasius the Great was himself essentially Greek. He was born in Asia Minor—excuse me, in Alexandria, Egypt—but he was Greek, had a Greek education, and spoke the Greek language. How, then, could he write a discourse Against the Greeks? Because the term “Greek” had come to mean “pagan.” Later the term Graikos came into use, from the Latin Graecia—but I will not go any further into that.

A further distinction arose with the word Romios, which comes from Romaios, meaning Roman. At that time Christians were regarded as Romans, or Romioi, which is why even today we say, “He is a Romios.” Some people are now trying to establish this usage again: to set aside the idea of the Hellene and bring back that of the Romios. We speak of Romania, the Romaic realm—Romans, Romioi—to mean that we are Christians, while “Hellenes” is said to be a designation that was restored later. Yet it is an old name; it is ancient. In any case, as I told you, I have only touched briefly upon this subject. There is a body of literature on it, and if you wish, you can read much more about how the term “Greek” came to be identified with the term “pagan.” That is why Saint Cyril uses it here.

“We cut off every error of polytheism, using this as a weapon against the Greeks.” Ethnic Greeks are not being blamed—I hope I have made that clear. Here the word “Greek” means “pagan.” That is the whole point of everything I have told you. Saint Cyril now adds something further against those people. Which people? Both the Greeks and the Jews. He tells them that God is not only the Father but also the Pantokrator, the Ruler of all. And so, dear friends, we shall examine the meaning of Pantokrator. This title is found in Holy Scripture; it is not a designation invented by human beings.

It appears in the Prophet Jeremiah, in the passage I read in the heading: chapter 32, verses 18 and 19—chapter 39 in the Septuagint numbering. The title Pantokrator appears in many places in the Old Testament and the New Testament, especially in the Old Testament. Saint Cyril will explain it further below, but let me tell you now what Pantokrator means: the One who holds and governs all things. We shall see this shortly. “We say this against Greeks and Jews alike, and against all heretics. For some of the Greeks said that God was the soul of the world, while others said that His authority reached only to heaven and did not extend to the earth.”

“Others fell into error and, together with them, misused the passage that says, ‘And Your truth reaches to the clouds.’ They dared to limit God’s providence to the clouds and to exclude earthly things from heaven, forgetting the Psalm that says, ‘If I ascend into heaven, You are there; if I descend into Hades, You are present.’ Nothing is higher than heaven, and Hades is deeper than the earth; therefore, He who rules the depths also reaches the earth.” There were, he says, some among the Greeks—that is, among the philosophers and pagans—who were called thyrathen, “those from outside.” Let me explain that word too. Thyra means “door,” while the ending -then means “from.” We say makrothen, meaning “from far away.”

Thus thyrathen means “from outside the door.” Very often we find the expression that a certain writer is thyrathen, a writer “from outside.” It means that he stands outside the door and is not within the fold of Christianity, if we picture Christianity as an enclosure with a door. “I am the door,” says Christ, and He is the door of the sheepfold. Anything outside the sheepfold, beyond the door, is thyrathen—outside the door. Thus all writers who had no connection with Christianity were called writers “from outside.” Forgive me for explaining these words; I believe the explanation is helpful. So then, some Greeks, he says...

said that God is the soul of the world. Others said that God’s authority reaches only to heaven—or rather, that it is confined to heaven—and does not extend to the earth. Now, if God were the soul of the world, we would have to say that God is contained rather than containing all things. He would be contained, not the One who contains. It is like water inside a glass: the water is contained by the glass; the water does not contain the glass. In the same way, if God is the soul of the world, then the divine essence would be something akin to the world. And do not imagine that these are obsolete ideas. Even today, especially in Masonic, theosophical, and pantheistic circles, you will often hear the following statement:

“The energy within nature—that is God.” Likewise, they say that the human soul, which we call spirit, is nothing but energy. But what kind of energy? Material energy—material energy as the other aspect of matter. That, they say, is what energy is; everyone knows this very well. Now you may say to me, “You see? You too are bringing in a few scientific ideas.”

No, only to clarify the matter and open the eyes of those who make such claims. What are you saying, sir? Are you saying that the soul of the world is God and that energy is God, or that energy is the soul? Then I tell you this: energy is the other aspect of matter. Is that so or not? It is. It certainly is. Therefore, since it is the other aspect of matter, it is like saying—the example will help you understand—that the egg is potentially a chicken, while the chicken is the egg in actuality.

Do you understand? I will say it again. The chicken is the egg in actuality, while the egg is potentially a chicken. The chicken has not yet appeared from the egg, but the egg is nevertheless a chicken, because if I incubate it, a chicken will hatch. It is therefore a chicken, but only potentially. When will it be a chicken in actuality? When it has become the chicken. And what, then, is the chicken? It is still the egg, but no longer potentially; it is the egg in actuality, because now the chicken walks about. It exists in actuality. That, then, is how they relate matter and energy. They are the same thing; energy is simply the other aspect of matter. Therefore, my dear friend, if you say that the human spirit is energy, then you are a materialist, because you are calling the spirit matter. And if you say that God is the soul of the world and that this soul is energy, then what you call God is matter, because energy is another form of matter. But then, we might ask: how can energy hold—

matter? There is no question here of one thing holding or not holding another. These are simply two states of matter: the form of matter familiar to us and the form of energy familiar to us. Where is God in all this? Is that what you call God?

That, they say, is God. Others have said something else—heretics who use Holy Scripture itself to interpret a related passage, though of course they interpret it wrongly. It is quite clear, as we can see, that the first position refers to the philosophers and pagans, while the second refers to heretics. So what does Saint Cyril say here? Which passage did they misuse?

It was the passage from Psalm 108, verse 4, which says, “And Your truth reaches to the clouds of heaven.” Your truth reaches as far as the clouds of heaven. Here too, dear friends, you can see what an absurd interpretation this is. The words are an expression, an image. We ask a little child, “How much do you love me?” The child stretches out both arms and says, “I love you this much.” How much does that mean? Does the child love you one meter’s worth? Of course not—not one meter or even ten centimeters. By stretching out both arms, the child is simply saying, “I love you very much.” So when Holy Scripture says that God’s truth reaches to the clouds... Thank you.

The clouds stand above all earthly things. What earthly things? Human beings, their works, their houses, their apartment buildings, their skyscrapers, and the mountains. The clouds are above them all, signifying that God’s truth is above human works, above human inventions, and above every human thought. Holy Scripture expresses this through a beautiful image: “God’s truth reaches to the clouds.” But what do the heretics say—like the millenarians and others who interpret things strangely, very strangely? “Ah,” they say, “God is above, in heaven, and His truth reaches down as far as the clouds, but stops there. It does not descend any farther, to the earth.” It is ridiculous.

Yet these ridiculous ideas, dear friends, lead people astray until, in the end, they are lost. Are not all heresies ridiculous? Is not millenarianism a ridiculous heresy? And yet how many victims these people have claimed! Since they used this passage, Saint Cyril in turn uses Holy Scripture. “You are using Holy Scripture; I will use Holy Scripture too.” I have explained to you that the words are an image. But now Saint Cyril gives us another answer: “They forgot the Psalm that says, ‘If I ascend into heaven, You are there; if I descend into Hades, You are present.’” Look, he says, at another Psalm—Psalm 139. If I ascend, supposing that I ascend into heaven...

You are there. If, he says, I descend into Hades—you see the word “Hades,” which I mentioned earlier when answering the question—You are present there. Saint Cyril then continues by saying that the earth lies in between. God is present both in heaven and in Hades. There was a belief, among the ancient Greeks and also in the Old Testament, that Hades is within the earth, in its depths. This is, of course, a relative way of speaking; God knows, and we can say nothing more. At any rate, Hades was understood to be beneath the earth’s surface. People then imagined the earth as a flat plane, as you know, and therefore Hades was beneath the earth—Hades understood as a particular place.

The earth, then—the land of the living, of those who are alive—lies between them. So if God is present both in heaven and in Hades, He is all the more present in the middle, that is, on earth as well. You may ask once again, were there really people so naïve? Yes, my beloved, there were. Paragraph three.

“The heretics, again, as we have already said, do not know one God, the Pantokrator, the Almighty. For the Pantokrator is He who holds all things and exercises authority over all things.” There were heretics, he says, who did not acknowledge God as Pantokrator. And now Saint Cyril analyzes the meaning of the term.

As I told you before, the Pantokrator is He who holds all things and exercises authority over all things; in other words, He is Lord of all. He holds and rules everything. “But they say that one is master of the soul and another master of the body. Thus they declare neither of them perfect, since each lacks what the other possesses.”

Some say that one is Pantokrator over bodies, over matter, while others say that another is Pantokrator over souls, that is, over spirits. In this way, of course, they divide the human person. Here one immediately sees a dualism, of which I have often spoken to you—a dualism we encounter at every turn and everywhere: one God of souls and another god of bodies. Saint Cyril now says: “For how can He be Pantokrator if He has authority over the soul but no authority over the body?” How could He be Pantokrator if He has authority over the soul but not the body, or over the body but not the soul? For certain heretics claimed that God—the true Pantokrator, the true Spirit, the perfect Spirit, the absolute Spirit—has no connection at all with matter or with the material world. You know that this idea has entered deeply into our lives. As I told you, Saint Cyril—not I—is giving you basic, foundational principles.

Let me show you how this has entered our lives. It has reached the point where we even deny the incarnation of the Son of God. Some say: “Could God, who is infinite and perfect—and they understand ‘infinite’ and ‘perfect’ in a Platonic sense—ever become man and come among us worms, among us filthy creatures, among us who are what we are? Could a perfect God ever take a human body, with a stomach and intestines, to put it plainly?” They try to reason it all out. Deep down, they cannot conceive of

the union of the infinite spirit with the presence of matter. The result is a denial of the incarnation. I myself have heard this many times from people, even from educated people: “Could God ever come among human beings and become man?” No, they say, and they reject it.

“And how can one who rules over bodies but has no authority over spirits be Pantokrator? Yet the Lord refutes them by saying the opposite.” Saint Cyril now uses the words of the Lord: “Fear rather Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in Gehenna.” I will tell you whom to fear: the One who has the power to destroy you in

fiery Gehenna—that is, in eternal Hell—both soul and body. Before I make my main point, notice how I told you during the questions that both souls and bodies will be in Hell, and both souls and bodies will be in the Kingdom of God. Here is another passage that confirms it, Matthew 10:28: “Fear Him who has the power to cast both soul and body into Hell.” But let us return to the main point. God has authority over both soul and body, for He casts them both into Hell. Saint Cyril then makes a very striking point: if this God had no authority over bodies,

He would be seizing something that belonged to someone else in order to cast it into Hell. Therefore, God truly is Pantokrator. Perhaps you will still ask, “Why should it matter to us whether God is Pantokrator or not?” It matters very much, because in our daily lives, if God is Pantokrator, then I have nothing to fear, whoever may stand against me. I am beholden to nothing else.

When I die—when I die, I surrender myself and depart calmly and peacefully in the hands of God, because He is God the Pantokrator. Can anyone snatch me away? Nothing can be snatched from the hand of God. Does this matter? Are there people who fear death?

Let them believe that God is Pantokrator and live according to His commandments. What do they have to fear? My beloved, when we are taken into the operating room, we know that a needle will be placed into our vein, an injection will be given, and in a little while we will fall asleep so that the operation can be performed. On the two occasions when I was given general anesthesia, I remember only the needle entering my vein. I do not remember it being removed.

I fell asleep immediately because I surrendered myself to receive that injection, knowing that I would fall asleep and perhaps might never wake up. I placed a certain faith and trust in the doctors: that they would not mistreat me, but that they would

help me recover. So I trusted them and fell asleep. I felt no anxiety or agitation, wondering, “What is going to happen?” Nothing. I would fall asleep, and they would operate on me—that was all. In the same way, my beloved, I will fall asleep in the sleep of death, and I have nothing to worry about. God is the Father and loves me; He is also Pantokrator, because nothing can escape from His hand. He holds all things. What have I to worry about? Tell me, does this have meaning and value? My beloved, if people today suffer from neuroses and psychoses, it is because these truths have disappeared from our lives: that God is the Father, and that God is Pantokrator,

that God is almighty and all-wise. These truths have disappeared, and we have turned the names, attributes, and divine uncreated energies of God into mere ornaments for a ceremonial speech. Do you not think we are wronging ourselves? Should these truths not return to our actual, daily lives? These names, attributes, and divine uncreated energies of God therefore have very great meaning and value. Paragraph four. “The Scripture of truth and the doctrines of truth know one God, who holds all things by His power, yet bears with many things because He so wills.”

“He holds sway over the idolaters, but He bears with them because He is forbearing. He also holds sway over the heretics who reject Him, but He bears with them because of His long-suffering. He even holds sway over the devil, but bears with him because of His long-suffering. For one who is powerless bears with things only because he has been defeated.” Let us examine this.

Scripture tells us that God is one and is Pantokrator. He holds all things. Yet He rules because He wills to rule, and He exercises authority over whatever He judges according to His will. The idolaters, too, remain under God’s sovereign will. He holds even the idolaters, because God is forbearing. He also holds the heretics who reject Him, and He even bears with the devil. He holds him, exercises authority over him, and keeps him in His hands. Why? Because God chooses to bear with him.

Here we see both God’s will according to His good pleasure and His permissive will at work in His rule and authority. My beloved, it is a great thing that God holds everyone in His hands. In our daily lives we often ask, “How does God tolerate these foolish, malicious people—these criminals and enemies of humanity? Why does He not strike them with a thunderbolt?” He bears with them. We often imagine that God lacks the power to restrain evil people or the devil. My beloved, He does have the power and holds all things, but in His forbearance He tolerates them. The day will come—and be certain of this—when we will all see that day, because we will rise again. On that day we will behold what happens, and we will tremble at what we see.

Then God will reveal, no longer His forbearance, but His justice. He often reveals this even within history, because Christ comes as judge many times within history. If you remember the Apocalypse, the Book of Revelation, how often does it speak of the Judge coming? He comes invisibly now, but at the end He will come visibly. Thus we see God judge history many times in a partial way. He judges at a particular point, judging one person or one nation, but not the whole earth, because the final Judgment has not yet come. These are signs that God holds all things. He holds everything—absolutely everything—and exercises authority over all. Thank you.

But there is also the positive side. I repeat what I said before: if I know that God is the Pantokrator, what have I to fear?

Saint Cyril gives a beautiful example. I will relate it to you in my own words. He refers to the example of Joseph. Did God not have the power to save Joseph from the hands of his brothers? They were preparing to kill him. In the end they did not kill him, but threw him into a pit. Reuben, the eldest brother, proposed this so that his other brothers would not stain their hands with their brother’s blood. His intention, however, was to return after the others had gone away, pull Joseph out of the pit, and tell him, “Now go—run back to your father.” But while Reuben was briefly away, tending the sheep a little farther off, some merchants passed by, and...

The other brothers thought it over and said, “Why should we kill him and leave him to die of hunger? He is our brother, after all. Why not sell him and make some money at the same time?” So they sold him to those passing merchants, who then resold him in Egypt. God does not intervene here. He is preparing a people who will descend from twelve patriarchs, and yet one of the twelve seems to be lost, destroyed, and made to disappear. But when Joseph reached Egypt, my dear friends, he was not lost. God raised him up to be second only to Pharaoh, through the dream he interpreted for Pharaoh and through the wise economic plan he proposed

showing exactly how Egypt and the surrounding peoples could be fed when the famine came. It was a wise plan. We spoke about this once before, when we were studying and interpreting Genesis. Later, Joseph’s brothers came to ask for grain, and they were terrified when they recognized their brother. Do you know what Joseph said to them?

He said, “Do not be afraid. I will do you no harm. Why should I harm you? I belong to God.” What a beautiful expression: “I belong to God.” A true man of God does no evil. “Do not be afraid. But I do not want to reassure you merely by saying that I am a man of God. I want to tell you something more.

“Deep down”—and here we see Joseph’s wisdom, indeed a wisdom with a prophetic dimension—“this was God’s plan: that I should go ahead of you and come to Egypt to prepare the way, so that you might survive and, together with you, a great many others might be saved from dying of hunger.” Did God not bring about the famine precisely to compel Jacob’s family to come to Egypt? Why did all this happen? Because they were only one family, about seventy-five people, apart from their servants and everything else that belonged to them. Jacob’s family consisted of only a small number of people.

These people had to grow into a nation. But how could that happen? What, then, did God do? Suppose we have a duck’s egg, but no duck to incubate it. We do have hens, however. So we take the duck’s egg and place it under a hen, and the hen incubates it. When the chicks hatch, we see that there is also a duckling among them. This, my dear friends, is what happened with the people of Israel. This people was incubated within another people.

It grew. It developed, became civilized, so to speak, and learned various crafts—whatever it was able to learn. Moses himself was instructed in all the wisdom of Egypt, as Holy Scripture tells us. When the time came for the duckling to leave the hen’s company and the circle of her chicks, it saw water and plunged in, while the poor hen could not follow, because chickens cannot swim. Israel departed and became a separate people, now numbering two million, and went on its way. It had to pass through the Red Sea so that God’s miracle might be revealed—a type of Christ’s Resurrection, a passage from corruption to incorruption and from death to immortality. It had to receive the Law in the wilderness, and this people had to grow to spiritual maturity. How manifold is the wisdom of God! Yet at one point someone might have said, “Look, the God of Israel allowed Joseph

to be sold by his brothers and mistreated. Why did Joseph remain for ten years in that dungeon—in prison, in that pit? Why did Potiphar’s wife have him cast there after she asked him to sin with her, to commit adultery?” Joseph was a young man, only twenty years old. He might easily have thought he could sin and get away with it. Of course, he did not give in; he said no. But if she had continued pressing him again and again, who knows what might have happened? “Wait,” God says. “I shall place you in prison, and there you will be protected for ten years, until you are thirty, so that you may escape the fury of your mistress.” Who would have said that it was God who put him in prison?

We would say, of course, that Potiphar put him in prison. Yes, but had the matter escaped from God’s hands? No. God put Joseph in prison to save him from Potiphar’s wife. Do you understand, then, my dear friends? God is the Pantokrator, the Ruler of all. We imagine that the events of history somehow slip through God’s fingers and out of His grasp, and that He cannot hold and govern them all. No. God holds them firmly. He is the Pantokrator.

Nothing lies outside the power of God—nothing at all. For Holy Scripture says of Him, “All things are Your servants.” All things in the universe are His servants; but He has one only Son and one Holy Spirit. Apart from these, the whole universe consists of servants. Through the one Son, in the Holy Spirit, all creation serves the Master. God, therefore, rules over all things; He holds everything in His power. He bears even with murderers, robbers, and fornicators. He bears with them all because of His longsuffering. Yet He has appointed a time limit, at the end of which He will render to each one what is due.

He has established a time, a definite limit. “I bear with you. You live in fornication, and I bear with you. You are a robber, and I bear with you. Whatever you may be—even a murderer—I bear with you. But take care: I shall set a limit for you. Beyond that limit, I shall bear with you no longer. I call you to metanoia, to repentance. If you repent, I shall forgive you. If you do not repent, I shall punish you. And even if I do not punish you in this life, I shall certainly punish you in the next.” This is why he continues: “Those who have been granted a long period of time, yet whose hearts remain unrepentant…”

They will be condemned all the more severely. There are kings among men who reign upon the earth, but not apart from the authority that comes from above. Nebuchadnezzar learned this through experience: “His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and His dominion is from generation to generation.” Kings govern the earth, but not outside God’s universal sovereignty. Nebuchadnezzar learned this through experience. Pilate says to Christ, “Will You not speak to me—to me, the Roman governor here? Do You know who I am? I have the authority either to release You or to crucify You.” And the Lord answers, “You would have no authority over Me at all unless it had been given to you from above.” From whom? From the Pantokrator!

But we shall continue.

Αυτό είναι ο Θεός. Άλλοι είπαν, το λέγουν αιρετικοί, διότι χρησιμοποιούν την ίδια την Αγία Γραφή για να ερμηνεύσουν ένα σχετικό χωρίο, φυσικά κακώς ερμηνεύοντάς το. Είναι δε φανερό, βλέπετε και εμείς πολύ καθαρά, πως η πρώτη θέση αναφέρεται στους φιλοσόφους, στους ειδωλολάτρες, πως η δευτέρα θέση αναφέρεται στους αιρετικούς. Και τι λέγει εδώ; Ποιο χωρίο εχρησιμοποίησαν κακώς;

Πεθαίνοντας. Πεθαίνοντας, αφήνω τον εαυτό μου και πεθαίνω ηρέμως και ειρηνικά στα χέρια του Θεού, ως Θεού Παντοκράτορος. Να, θα με αρπάξει κανένας; Γιατί από το χέρι του Θεού τίποτα δεν μπορεί να αρπαχθεί. Έχει σημασία αυτό; Υπάρχουν άνθρωποι που φοβούνται τον θάνατο;

ακριβώς πώς θα μπορούσε να τραφεί η Αίγυπτος αλλά και οι γύρω λαοί όταν θα ερχόταν η πείνα. Σοφόν. Κάποτε, όταν κάναμε την ανάλυση της Γενέσεως, την ερμηνεία, το είχαμε αναφέρει αυτό. Όταν κατόπιν τα αδέλφια του Ιωσήφ θα έρθουν να ζητήσουν σιτάρι και θα τρομάξουν όταν θα αναγνωρίσουν τον αδελφό τους. Ξέρετε τι λέγει ο Ιωσήφ στα αδέλφια του;

να πουληθεί από τα αδέλφια του και να κακοποιηθεί. Γιατί έμεινε ο Ιωσήφ δέκα χρόνια μέσα στο λάκκο», λέγει, «μέσα στη φυλακή, μέσα στο λάκκο; Γιατί τον πέταξε εκεί η γυναίκα του Πετεφρή, που του ζήτησε αμαρτία, μοιχεία;» Ήταν ένα νεαρό παιδί, είκοσι χρονών παιδί ήταν ο Ιωσήφ. Εκ του ασφαλούς θα μπορούσε να αμαρτήσει. Βέβαια δεν ενέδωσε, είπε το όχι. Αν όμως αυτή τον πολιορκούσε και τον ξαναπολιορκούσε, ποιος ξέρει τι θα μπορούσε να γίνει; «Στάσου», λέει ο Θεός, «θα σε βάλω στη φυλακή και εκεί θα είσαι ασφαλισμένος δέκα χρόνια, μέχρι που είσαι τριάντα χρονών, για να γλιτώσεις από τη μανία της κυράς σου». Ποιος θα έλεγε εδώ ότι ο Θεός τον έβαλε στη φυλακή;
