Summary

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem explains that fatherhood can describe natural generation, adoption, spiritual rebirth, or caring guardianship. Saint Gregory Palamas teaches Christians to honor, obey, and confess to spiritual fathers, who guide souls and exercise Christ’s authority to bind and loose. Christ’s declaration that He existed before Abraham, together with His Resurrection and Pentecost, confirms His eternal divinity and truthfulness.

We are in the seventh catechesis, in its third part—the third continuation—and we have now reached paragraph eleven. Saint Cyril says: “More precisely, it is not always the Father by nature alone who is called ‘father’ in Holy Scripture. Hear Paul saying: ‘For though you have ten thousand instructors in Christ, you do not have many fathers; for in Christ Jesus, through the Gospel, I begot you.’ For fatherhood lies not only in begetting according to the flesh, but also in teaching and bringing someone to spiritual rebirth.” Paul is the father of the Corinthians.

“Hear also what Job says.” Thank you. Here we see that fatherhood does not belong only to someone who physically begets a child. A person who brings another to spiritual rebirth is also called a father. This is why Saint Cyril reminds us that Paul is called a father. Listen to what Paul says to the Corinthians: “Though you have ten thousand instructors in Christ, you do not have many fathers.” You have one father. Why does he say this? “For in Christ Jesus, through the Gospel, I begot you.” I begot you, he says, through the Gospel—that is, spiritually.

I made you Christians. If others come and help you in your spiritual life, they may be regarded and counted as instructors. But you have one father: me, because I begot you through the Gospel. This is extremely important, my beloved. To begin with, Saint Cyril wishes to distinguish the different senses of the word “father.” There is not only fatherhood by nature, but also spiritual fatherhood and fatherhood by adoption. A father by nature is the one who begets a child, the one who gives him his blood, and so forth. Then the one who...

adopts someone is a father by adoption, while the one who brings a person to spiritual rebirth is called a spiritual father. Here we are speaking of the spiritual father. Saint Cyril has already told us that the Son, the Only-Begotten, is called Only-Begotten precisely because He is the Son by nature. God the Father has no other Son; He has only one Son. Just the other day I was reading a book of the Jehovah’s Witnesses that someone had given me. It said: “You see, the Son—Jesus Christ—never said that He is God.” What a dreadful blasphemy! They say that He is the Son of God in the same way that we too are sons of God.

Poor, wretched people! Quite apart from your selfish and passionate motives—for example, the Evangelist John says that they delivered Him up to death out of envy—what charge did you bring when you sought to have Jesus condemned to death? You said that He opposed Caesar. But Pilate found no basis for this, so your argument came to nothing and Pilate did not accept it. Then you said that He was the Son of God, that He had said He was the Son of God. At this Pilate became afraid and questioned Him about what it meant. My beloved,

the Jews understood perfectly well what Christ had said. They crucified Him because He called Himself the Son of God and made Himself equal with God. But if “sons of God” simply meant that the Jews were God’s children, as the Jehovah’s Witnesses claim, what would have been so extraordinary about it? Indeed, the Lord Himself used precisely this argument: “I said, you are gods,” and so forth. The Jews therefore understood very well who Jesus Christ was and what He was saying. It is another matter that they did not believe He truly was the Son of God; but they understood Christ’s claim. Once, when they tried to stone Him, the Lord asked, “For which good work do you stone Me?” They answered, “Not for any good work, but because You, being a man, make Yourself equal with God.” So the Jews understood perfectly well what Jesus Christ was saying. And now, since I have mentioned the Jehovah’s Witnesses, take care, my beloved. Their greatest blasphemy is their denial of the divinity of Jesus Christ. When they say, “He is not God, but the Son of God,” they use “Son of God” merely in the same way that we are called sons and children of God, not in its unique and proper sense. Consider how much we have said on this subject while following Saint Cyril. We have completed two whole discussions so that we may see how strongly Saint Cyril insists upon this point.

Jesus is by nature the Son of God the Father, and it is on account of the Son that God is called Father. He is Only-Begotten because God has no other children. He has one Son, Jesus Christ, the very God the Word (Logos) who became man. He is the Father’s Son not merely as man, but as God. This is why we speak of the Father, the Son or Word, and the Holy Spirit. When the Word became man, we might say that He was Son in two respects. Saint Cyril now wishes to continue by showing that we also use the word “father” in another sense, as Paul does when he says: “Though you have ten thousand instructors, you have only one father.”

He wishes to show the spiritual meaning of fatherhood: Paul is a father spiritually because he brought the Corinthians to spiritual rebirth. Much could be said about the spiritual father—very much indeed. Saint Gregory Palamas, in his extensive exposition of the Decalogue of Moses, where he unfolds its New Testament dimensions, says the following:

“You owe honor and love to your spiritual fathers, because the honor shown to them passes on to Christ and to the All-Holy Spirit, from whom you received adoption as a son, and to the heavenly Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named. Make every effort throughout your whole life to have a spiritual father.” Throughout your entire life, you must strive to have a spiritual father. “Confess to him every sin and every logismos, every intrusive thought, and receive from him healing and forgiveness.” You are to disclose to him every sin and every intrusive thought, seeking from him healing and forgiveness.

“For to them it was given to bind and loose souls,” because they have been given authority to bind or release souls. “Whatever they bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever they loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. For they received this grace and authority from Christ. Therefore obey them and do not contradict them, lest you bring about the loss of your own soul.” From whom, then, do spiritual fathers receive this authority? From Christ. For this reason, you must obey them and not speak against them, lest you bring destruction upon your own soul.

“For if one who contradicts his parents according to the flesh in matters not forbidden by the divine law is put to death according to the law, how shall one who contradicts his fathers according to the spirit not drive the Spirit of God away from himself and destroy his own soul?” If, he says, someone who defies his parents according to the flesh—something the law does not permit—is put to death under the law, how much more grave is it for someone to defy his spiritual fathers, thereby driving away the Holy Spirit and destroying his own soul? Do you see? “Therefore,” he continues, “seek counsel from your fathers in the Spirit and heed them until the end.”

“So that your soul may be saved and you may become an heir of the eternal and incorruptible blessings.” We have, then, the reality of the spiritual father. It is an exceedingly important part of the spiritual life and deserves our particular attention, because the spiritual father is also a guide. He is not merely the one who will forgive—or not forgive—a sin; he is also the one who will guide and help you, showing you the right path. This is extremely important, as you yourselves understand and can see. Let us therefore pay careful attention to it, my beloved. What more can one say here? Just as some people go about criticizing their parents, their parents according to the flesh,

so too they criticize their spiritual fathers publicly before other people. But when a spiritual father hears such accusations, he simply says: “If people accuse God the Father, how much more will they accuse human beings who serve as spiritual fathers?” Yet this is always ingratitude; it is a measure of ingratitude. If you accuse your parents, if you accuse God the Father, or if you accuse your spiritual father, that is ingratitude—without question. Besides, God alone is the perfect Father; He alone possesses perfection. Do your own parents not have shortcomings? Your spiritual father may also have shortcomings. Would it be right, because your father is uneducated while you have received an education,

or because, being human, your father made certain mistakes in his life, for you to go out and accuse him? My beloved, I remember an incident—and in fact I heard a similar story today that deeply moved me. I shall not tell today’s story, but an older one. I was about nineteen when I learned of it. I saw the young man himself in the Averoff Prison in Athens, in Attica. He was imprisoned after being accused of rape. But the young man had not committed the rape; his father had. In the end, circumstances developed in such a way that the charge was laid against the son. He was about seventeen or eighteen years old.

The young man willingly accepted the charge and was already serving his sentence in prison in order to protect his father’s name. This is truly remarkable. If that child went so far as to accept the law’s punishment so that his father would not be exposed, you understand how significant this was. Let us not go to the opposite extreme and publicly accuse our parents—not over something like the example I have just given you, but simply because our father has some fault. Perhaps he snores at night. You will say to me, “Would I really go out and criticize him just because he snores?” Yet quite a few women criticize their husbands for snoring. What of it? They snore. Very well, they snore.

I can bear it. This or that may be wrong with him; perhaps I too snore, or have some other fault. So let us be very careful at this point, my beloved—very careful. Let us continue. Saint Cyril now says that there is yet another form of fatherhood: “Hear also Job saying: ‘I was a father to the weak.’” Job said, “I was the father of the weak.” “He called himself their father not because he had begotten them all, but because he cared for them as their guardian. And the Only-Begotten Son of God Himself, at the time of the Cross, while nailed to it in the flesh, saw Mary, His mother according to the flesh, and John, the most beloved of His disciples. To John He said, ‘Behold your mother,’ and to”

“Mary, ‘Behold your son,’ thus teaching them the loving care they owed one another.” Here we have another sense of the word “father.” Job says, “I was the father of the weak”—that is, their guardian and protector. On the Cross, Christ looked at His disciple and said, “Behold your mother”; then He looked at His mother and said, “Behold your son.” In what sense? Did John at that moment become the natural son of Mary, the Theotokos? What do the words “Behold your child” and “Behold your mother” mean? They mean that from then on there would be a relationship of guardianship—loving care and protection. And we must understand that this word, “to care for as a guardian,” means...

to watch over someone as a guardian and caretaker. Often, of course, the natural father was also the guardian. This is why, in the old days, when a child misbehaved at school, we used to say, “Bring your guardian.” The teacher was not concerned with whether the man who came was the one who had begotten you, but with who was responsible for caring for you. Your father might be in the village or in another town. Who looks after you? So the old schoolteacher or professor would say, “Bring your guardian”—the person who takes care of you. The Greek word comes from a verb meaning “to care for.” Its opposite is acedia, spiritual torpor, which literally conveys a lack of care.

Likewise, when we speak in Greek of a funeral, the word literally refers to the care given to the dead—the tending of the departed. Thus a guardian, a caretaker, may likewise be called a father. But let us continue.

“Is it not evident to everyone”—I am omitting certain passages because they might take too much time—“that God is called the Father of orphans who have lost their own fathers, not because He begot them from Himself, but because He cares for and defends them? In relation to human beings, then, as you have heard, God is called Father in an extended sense; but of Christ alone God is Father by nature, not by adoption. He becomes Father to human beings in time, but He is the Father of Christ before all ages, as Christ Himself says: ‘And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world existed.’” When I read these texts, I do so not only to preserve the authenticity of what we are discussing—you hear the very words that we interpret—but also because we must not lose contact with our language.

There is another reason why we read these texts, whether we understand them or not, or understand only whatever we can grasp from them: it is so that, as I said, we may remain in touch with our language. Let me make a brief digression. The Greek language is one language throughout its historical development. Naturally, language evolves, just as every living thing does. Yet we cannot say that the language of one period or another, however far back we go, is not Greek. It is the Greek language. Thus, whenever we bring forward texts from any period whatsoever—from Homer to Plato, through the Hellenistic period, Byzantium, the years of Ottoman rule, and the post-Byzantine period—

and so on, it is all the Greek language. The Greek language is one—one and the same. It takes no great philosophy to see and understand this. Nor can we find fault with the ancient texts, because they are our language. They are our roots, and we must be conscious of this. Neither can we cast them aside as supposedly useless or incomprehensible. That is a grave mistake. So this is also one reason why I read them. Now, what does the text say here? God is called the Father of human beings in a broad, figurative sense, but He is the Father of Jesus Christ by nature. He has been our Father from the time we came into existence, whereas He is Christ’s Father before all ages; that is, Christ is the eternal Son, begotten before all ages.

We would express this incomprehensible mystery by saying, “The Father exists, and at once the Son exists.” In other words, there was never a time when the Son did not exist. This is incomprehensible to the foolish Jehovah’s Witnesses, who say, “How can the Son say that He is equal to the Father, when the Father is greater than the Son?” They do not understand. It is just as John Chrysostom says. When we call God “Father,” as I told you on a previous occasion, what do we mean? Do we mean that God has a womb and gives birth? With human beings, of course, a father begets in a certain way and therefore comes first in time, because we are thinking in terms of a human image. But God is not a human being. He has no womb, nor does He beget a child through sexual union, as Saint Cyril says here.

There is no sexual union involved. Nothing of that kind exists in God. Therefore, the Father exists, and at once the Son exists. There was never a time when the Son did not exist. Together with the Father is the Son. We believe, therefore, in one God, the Father, who is beyond searching out and beyond description.

“No one has seen God; the Only-Begotten alone has made Him known.” “He who is from God has seen God.” “The angels continually behold His face in the heavens,” yet “each beholds Him according to the measure of his own rank.” “But the perfect vision of the Father is reserved for the Son together with the Holy Spirit.” We believe, therefore, in one God, the Father.

He is beyond searching out and beyond description. No human being has ever seen Him. Only His Only-Begotten Son has seen Him, beholds Him, and makes Him known. He who is from God, who has His being from God, has seen God. The angels continually behold the face of God in heaven, but each beholds Him according to the measure of his own rank. Yet true knowledge and theoria—the divine vision—of the Father belong to the Son alone, not to any created being. Saint Cyril continues: “Having reached this point in the discourse, and recalling what was said shortly before—how God is proclaimed the Father of human beings—I am greatly astonished at the ingratitude of mankind. For God,”

“in His love for mankind, counted us worthy to be called the Father of human beings: He who is in heaven became Father to those on earth; the Maker of the ages became Father to those who exist in time; and He who holds the earth in the hollow of His hand became Father to those who dwell upon it like grasshoppers. Yet man abandoned his heavenly Father and said to wood, ‘You are my father,’ and to stone, ‘You gave birth to me.’” What can I say, Saint Cyril asks? God condescends to be called the Father of us human beings. And who is He? The One who holds the whole universe in the hollow of His hand. He calls us His children, though we are like grasshoppers, as the text says. What did we say? We are nothing. The phrase “like grasshoppers” is taken from Isaiah.

And once, when the spies went to see the inhabitants of the land of Canaan and saw that they were giants, they returned and said, “Why, we were like grasshoppers before them.” We were nothing compared with them. So we see that, although God condescends to be called our Father, we reject this gift of His. We go so far as to abandon our heavenly Father and say to wood, “You are my father,” and to stone, “You gave birth to me.” This passage, of course, refers to the idolatry of that time. But if we were to recast it in modern terms and bring it up to date, do you know how we would express it today?

“No God created me.” As for the words, “God made man; in the image of God He made man”—not to mention what the Short Philosophical Dictionary says, for those of you who know it—it claims that the statement is true in reverse: that man made God in his own image. It accepts nothing beyond this. Where did you come from, O man? Spontaneously—from dead matter. And now we even begin to invoke scientific data. Yet there is no scientific basis for this, only theories. I will say it once again: there is no scientific basis for claiming that we arose spontaneously from dead matter. In other words, that dead matter, entirely on its own,

began to display the phenomena of life; that life appeared in its simplest forms; and that from there, little by little, through the theory of evolution, we arrived at man. These things written in school textbooks today are stale ideas, products of the last century, which, in all honesty, we cannot seriously continue to repeat. We truly cannot say such things responsibly, nor can we present theories as though they were scientific truths, especially in educational books, teaching materials, and elementary-school textbooks. At some point we must begin to distinguish these things. A scientific theory is one thing; a scientific truth is another.

A scientific theory is a scientist’s belief—something he believes, meaning, “I think.” That is what such a belief means: “I think the matter must be this way.” Naturally, a theory must have some basis and some indications, and it must be verified at certain points. But this does not mean that it can be verified absolutely. Therefore, it remains a theory. Once it has been completely verified, it passes from theory into scientific truth. Scientific truth is no longer a scientific belief, but something that has been conclusively demonstrated. At one time we might have asked, “Could the earth revolve around the sun? We have certain indications that this may be so.” We therefore formulate a theory.

Once we have demonstrated that the earth revolves around the sun, it is no longer a scientific theory but a scientific truth. How, then, can we say that the theories of evolution and spontaneous generation are scientific truths? How can they be? They are not. And when schoolchildren cannot distinguish between a theory and a scientific truth, how can they untangle and understand these matters? I must tell you that this phenomenon is not new. Sadly—most sadly—it dates from the last century. Because this theory served materialism, it was taken up by materialism so that materialism could maintain its position.

The matter is very simple. Very simple, I tell you again. Once I understand—and I say this for the second time—what scientific theory means and what scientific truth means, the issue is settled. You should also note that within science as a whole—not merely medicine or physics, but the entire realm of what can be known—scientific truths are actually few, my dear friends. I would say that perhaps ninety-nine percent consists of scientific theories and one percent of scientific truths. You parents ought to protest against all this. At the very least, help your children understand that things are not as they are presented today, and that since the last century there has been

a deliberate agenda—an agenda on the part of materialism. Sadly, that agenda still exists today. Its aim is this: we must show that God does not exist. Once we remove God from our path, everything becomes permissible. God is the great obstacle; He must be put out of the way. For if we arose spontaneously from dead matter, what place would God have, and what role would He have to play in our lives? If you would like to read more on this subject, I refer you to the second or third chapter—I do not remember exactly where—of the Wisdom of Solomon. This phenomenon is not new; it is very ancient. The text says “spontaneously”—it uses the very same word: “We were born spontaneously.”

We came into being spontaneously. You see? The phenomenon is not new. Paragraph thirteen says: “Not only did they choose wood and stone, but some even accepted Satan as the father of their soul-destroying deeds. To them the Lord said in rebuke, ‘You do the works of your father, the devil,’ who is the father of human beings not by nature, but through deception.”

The discussion still concerns the meaning of fatherhood. Christ said, “You do not have Abraham as your father; you have Satan as your father. For if Abraham were your father, you would recognize Me, because Abraham recognized Me.” How did Abraham recognize Him? Abraham, He says, looked forward to My day.

And he rejoiced. What was he awaiting? The promise—the Great Promise—that his offspring would be saved. How would they be saved? Was it merely that they would return to the land of Canaan from Egypt, where they would be enslaved? No. Abraham saw beyond that; he saw eternal redemption. This is why he did not acquire even a foot of land. He lived in tents, though he was rich. He lived in tents because, as the Apostle Paul says, he looked forward to a better homeland, one not made by hands, uncreated: the Kingdom of God. The Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and Abraham saw Your day and rejoiced?” Abraham had lived two thousand years before the Lord. And the Lord said:

“Amen, I say to you”—I assure you—“before Abraham came to be, I am.” Before Abraham came into being, I exist—not “I existed,” but “I exist” eternally. And did the Jews then fail to understand Him, and was that why they crucified Him? They understood very well. But let us suppose—may the Lord forgive me for saying it—that He had been a deceiver and had misled people by what He said. The Resurrection proves that He was not a deceiver. Pentecost proves that Christ was not a deceiver. Therefore, He was true. When the Lord said, “I am; before Abraham came to be, I exist,” the Resurrection and Pentecost bore witness to His words. The Spirit of God came to testify who Jesus is. For if Jesus had been a deceiver, how could the Spirit of God have vindicated Him? You see? Christ is true, therefore. He is true. Now let us return to the text. Saint Cyril says that people not only worshipped wood and stone, but even chose Satan as their father. And, sadly, we must say that there are people who worship Satan. This is not new, but it is astonishing that such Satan-worship exists in our time, even among Christian peoples.

Can Satan really be worshipped? Yes. What is Baphomet? He is the goat-footed figure who is depicted much as the Greek god Pan once was. From the waist down, this goat-footed god has the body and legs of a goat. His face is something between that of a man and a goat, while he has human hands and a goat’s horns. How, then, is this god worshipped? According to those knowledgeable in these matters, this god, Baphomet, is revealed at the thirty-third degree of Freemasonry. The argument behind it is not new. It is the same ancient argument. We encounter it among the Freemasons—I have read it in one of their own books—but we also encounter it in antiquity. Among the Gnostics there was even a group called the Ophites, who worshipped the serpent. Which serpent? The ancient serpent, the devil: “The ancient serpent, Satan, who deceives the whole inhabited world,” together with all the other names used by John the Evangelist in the Apocalypse. These things were dismissed as ridiculous, laughable, foolish, and stupid—things with which we should not concern ourselves. No, no; they are extremely serious. Otherwise, are we saying that we place ridiculous images on official banknotes? We would then be condemning ourselves as ridiculous if we put ridiculous things on official currency. We cannot afterwards dismiss them as ridiculous; they must carry some serious meaning. Yes, because the worship of Satan exists. Within Freemasonry, then, there is the worship of Satan. It is revealed only in the highest degrees, or in the initiations belonging to those highest degrees. That is where it is disclosed. And behind the Great Architect of the Universe, represented by the sun, stands in reality the devil.

I have not yet told you the argument; let me tell you now. As the ancient Ophites used to say, the devil is the evil god, or the god of matter, while the good god is the god of spirits. In other words, there are two opposing first principles. But, they say, there is no need to appease, worship, and glorify the good god, because he is good by nature and poses no danger to us. We must glorify, appease, and worship the evil god—the devil—precisely so that we will not suffer. Did you hear that argument? You heard it very clearly. And so Satan is worshipped. How many times have we read in the newspapers about instances of Satan worship in America,

combined with drugs, sacrifices, acts of impurity, sexual immorality, and so forth? Those of you who have read about such things from time to time will know. So Satan worship does exist. Yes, yes, yes—unfortunately.

“Adoption is a matter of free will, as John says: ‘But as many as received Him, to them He gave the authority to become children of God, to those who believe in His name.’ For it was not before faith, but through faith, that they freely chose and were counted worthy to become children of God.” Adoption is a matter of free will, my dear friends. Do you want to be a child of God? By your own choice, you will become a child of God. Do you want to be a child of the devil? By your own choice, you will be a child of the devil. The choice is yours. This is very important. Adoption also carries a consequence: “Knowing this, therefore, let us conduct ourselves spiritually, that we may be counted worthy of adoption by God. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. It is of no benefit to us merely to bear the name of Christians”

“if the corresponding works do not follow, lest it be said to us as well: ‘If you were children of Abraham, you would do the works of Abraham.’” If God calls us His children, he says, then we too must live in a way that corresponds to the status He gives us. There is no benefit in bearing the name and title of Christian if, in reality, our lives do not correspond to it. Otherwise, we too may hear what the Lord said to the Jews concerning Abraham: “You say that you are children of Abraham. If you were children of Abraham, you would also do the works of your father Abraham—but you do not.” So, as you understand, there must be a corresponding response on our part. Are you a child of God?

Do you prove that you are a child of God? You will reflect God in your life. Your face, your works, your actions—everything about you will reflect God. By your very presence, you will bear witness to God the Father and show that you are a child of God. Another point is this: since God is Father, we must also have faith in His providence. He says, “Let us cast all our cares upon Him, for our Father knows what we need.” Let us cast all our cares upon God the Father, because He knows what we need.

God says somewhere, “I will no more forget you than a mother would forget her child.” But even if a mother should forget her child, I will not forget you. For even if such a terrible departure from what is natural should occur, that mothers forget the children they bore, God says, “I will not forget you.” Indeed, He says, “I have drawn your city, Zion, here upon the palm of My hand, and I see it continually.” In other words, I keep you always before My eyes; I care for you continually. As you know, we have said before—when we spoke about faith in the teaching of Saint Cyril himself—that faith is not merely faith in the existence of God, but also faith in God’s providence

and also in God’s governance. God exists, He provides, and He governs. When many people say they believe in God, they do not, of course, define exactly what they believe. In reality, they believe only in His existence. That is, they simply go through this life as though God did not exist.

They act and live without any faith in God’s providence. “I will provide my own bread,” rather than, “God will give me my bread.” “I will take care of my fields,” with no thought of whether God sends rain or withholds it. “What am I going to do?” God is pushed to the margins. Most people who say they believe in God do not truly believe.

The first circle of faith is belief in the existence of God. The second step, which is of course a step forward, is faith in providence: that God provides for me and governs all things. He also allows certain things to happen, of course, precisely because there is that reality we call free will. In the end, free will explains everything; without it, everything becomes confused. When we cannot understand what free will means, everything in this world is tangled. But once we truly understand what free will means, everything is resolved. Then there are no problems concerning why God intervenes or does not intervene, why He permits something, what belongs to His good and gracious will, and what belongs to His permissive will, and so forth.

Then we can understand, my dear friends, the meaning of free will. Nevertheless, God cares and provides for the human person. But now we come to our parents. In the few minutes remaining, pay attention to this point: “Let those present who still have fathers and mothers listen especially to this commandment.” Saint Cyril was saying to those who listened to him in his own day: Of all of you who hear me, those who have a father and mother should pay particular attention. I would ask someone: Is your father alive? Is your mother alive? If your father and mother are living, then listen: “Children, obey your parents.”

Today you might say, “I am thirty, forty, or fifty years old; I no longer owe my parents any obedience.” No. A parent does not cease to be who he or she is and ought to be. It is another matter that parents must not interfere in your problems and create confusion; that is a separate subject. It belongs to the saying, “A man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife.” This word “leave” does not contradict “Children, obey your parents,” nor does it contradict “Honor your father and your mother.” There is no contradiction. It means that you must become psychologically independent of your parents. You must no longer speak like a little child about “my daddy and my mommy,” while telling your wife, “Whatever Mom and Dad say goes.” You must act as a mature person.

If you do not “leave”—if you do not let go—then wherever you walk and wherever you go, you carry the umbilical cord with you and remain joined to your mother. “A man shall leave” means that, psychologically, you can no longer belong to your parents. Yet you still owe them the honor, care, and provision that are their due; you cannot abandon them. Is there, then, any contradiction between “leave” and “honor your father and your mother”? There is none. Some people think that being psychologically dependent on their parents is what it means to “honor your father and your mother.” My dear friends, that is a sign of immaturity.

I emphasize it: it is a sign of immaturity. A certain proportion of married couples suffer because at least one of the two has not matured. Either the daughter or the son has not yet matured, and that is dreadful. If a person has not matured, he or she cannot enter into the communion of Holy Matrimony. The person must mature psychologically. “For the Lord did not say, ‘He who loves...’” Ah, forgive me. “Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well pleasing to the Lord.”

The Lord also said something else: “He who loves father or mother is not worthy of Me.” Do not misunderstand through ignorance what has been so clearly stated. He added the words “more than Me.” Forgive me—He added “more than Me.” The Lord said, “He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me.” Whoever loves his father and mother more than he loves Me is not worthy of Me. Is there a contradiction here? If I love my father and mother more than God, He tells me that I am unworthy of Christ. Does that contradict “Honor your father and your mother”? Not at all. He says “more than Me”—the one who loves his mother and father more than Me. In what sense? Listen.

“For if an earthly father holds opinions contrary to the Father in Heaven, then one must follow the divine word.” When my parents turn against God and believe the opposite of what God teaches, then I will not obey them. In what sense? I will still care for them, of course; I will not cast them out into the street—pay attention to this—but I will not obey what they are telling me to do. When my father says to me, “You will not go to Church,” I will say to him, “Father, do you know something? If you want me to honor you, it is God who teaches me how to honor you. So if you forbid me from going to Church, then know this: I will not honor you either.” Many parents demand honor from their children, but...

They usurp the honor that belongs to God the Father. Such parents should know this: they will pay very dearly for it. For when you remove honor for God the Father from your children’s souls, one day they will not respect you either. You have abused your position. You have taken for yourselves what did not belong to you, and you will lose even the honor that did belong to you. Do you want your children to honor you? Take care to teach them to honor God, and then they will honor you. But when this is not the case—“when they place no obstacle in the way of our piety”—and yet we behave ungratefully and forget the benefits they have bestowed upon us, then the saying applies: “Whoever speaks evil of father or mother shall surely be put to death.” If there truly is nothing in their conduct that hinders me,

if my parents are not opposing my faith, then the matter is certainly serious. Saint Cyril continues—and I will return to the previous point: “The first virtue of Christian piety is to honor one’s parents, to repay the labors of those who raised us, and to provide for their comfort with all our strength.” The first virtue for Christians, he says, is to honor their parents. To honor their parents. If a Christian does not honor his parents and speaks of them contemptuously as “my old man and my old woman”—did you hear that? “My old man and my old woman.” Never say that. It is dreadful and deeply degrading. Say, “my father and my mother.” “My old man, my old woman”—God forbid! From this one small sign, as the lion is known by its claw, it becomes clear that you do not respect your parents. For he says...

“Even if we give them everything possible in return, we can never give them birth as they gave birth to us.” We may give them everything, but we cannot give birth to them, nor can they give birth to us a second time, nor can we acquire other parents. We have one mother, the one given to us, and one father, the one given to us. We cannot have another. That is final. You understand, then, my dear friends, how much honor we owe them. Now I return, as I said I would, to the words, “He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me.” There is another point here as well: When we bring a child into the world, to whom does that child belong? To us? My dear friends, we imagine that our children are our property. Holy Matrimony provides a form,

a form through which God wills that human beings should multiply and fill His Kingdom. His love gave us this form, which we call Holy Matrimony. This means that children—all human beings—belong to God, while parents are simply stewards of this plan of God; they are caretakers and administrators. Stewards cannot take possession of what has been entrusted to their care. They cannot claim the children as their own and say, “The children belong to me,” when God comes and says, “In the deepest sense, your child belongs to Me. You will simply feed and raise the child.” Remember Abraham and Isaac. After God gave Abraham the child, He later said to him, “You will offer him as a sacrifice to Me.” Abraham said nothing.

“I will sacrifice him; the child is not mine.” This is a profound lesson, a great teaching. And what does it mean, my beloved? It means that when, one day, our child asks to dedicate himself to God, we cannot assert our own rights over him. Pay close attention to this. I will tell you something—take it as you will, you who are so insistent on your rights. If my father had not let me come to Larissa, I would not be here. A lady came this evening and said, “Father, we only get to see you for two minutes.” She has two sons; perhaps she or her husband is listening to me right now. I told her, “Excellent, excellent. Give your two children to become clergy, and then this shortage will be relieved.” It is very simple, very simple. My beloved, when your children ask to dedicate themselves to the love of God and to the work of God,

do not hinder them. Do not hinder your children. Pay close attention to this. It is a dreadful sin. It is an abuse of what has been entrusted to you. Just as someone who commits an abuse of trust goes to prison, so it is here. You will go to prison—and here the prison is eternal Hell. Let us pay close attention to this point. And one final thing, one final thing, as we bring this catechesis, the seventh catechesis, to a close. He says: “When you give rest and comfort to your parents, then they too, having received this comfort from you, will bestow their blessing upon you.” And so forth, just as Joseph did in Egypt for his father Jacob. When we give rest and comfort to our parents, they in turn will give us their blessing. My beloved, if only you knew what a great treasure a blessing is...

Holy Scripture speaks of the blessing of parents. Just as a parent’s curse is a dreadful thing, so too a parent’s blessing is something great, something immense. In the familiar saying, a mother or father tells the child, “My child, may everything you touch turn to gold.” “May everything you touch turn to gold” means that whatever you undertake may not turn to ashes or come to nothing. May everything you experience and everything you pursue in your life be made worthy and bear fruit. The blessing and prayer of one’s parents are a great thing. But how can we receive their blessing and their prayer? By giving them rest and comfort. At the same time, however, we must know that if they ask us to do things that God would not want, we will say to them with love: “My father, my mother, I love you, I honor you, and I will pray for you; but God does not will what you are asking of me. This I will not...

obey.” And so, my beloved, as we conclude the Seventh Catechesis of Saint Cyril, we see the meaning of fatherhood. God possesses it first in relation to the Only-Begotten Son, and then He extends it to us. In our case, He is not Father by nature, but Father by grace. Let us, then, come at last to acknowledge God the Father, and everything in our lives will be under the blessing of God.

Thank you.

Και κάποτε, όταν πήγαν οι κατάσκοποι να ιδούν τους κατοίκους της γης Χαναάν και τους είδαν γίγαντες, γύρισαν και είπαν: «Πω πω, λέει, εμείς είμαστε σαν ακρίδες μπροστά τους». Δεν είναι τίποτα, δεν είμαστε μπροστά τους. Ώστε λοιπόν βλέπουμε εδώ ότι, ενώ ο Θεός καταδέχεται να ονομάζεται Πατέρας μας, εμείς αρνούμεθα αυτή Του την προσφορά και φτάνουμε να αφήνουμε τον Ουράνιο Πατέρα και να λέμε στο ξύλο: «Συ είσαι πατέρας μου» και στον λίθο: «Εσύ με εγέννησες». Αυτό το σημείο, βέβαια, είναι ένα σημείο που δείχνει την ειδωλολατρία της εποχής. Αλλά, αν έπρεπε αυτό να το αναπλάσουμε και να το εκσυγχρονίσουμε, ξέρετε πώς θα το λέγαμε σήμερα;

«και των έργων μη επακολουθούντων, μήποτε και προς ημάς ρηθείη το “Ει τέκνα του Αβραάμ ήτε, τα έργα του Αβραάμ εποιείτε”». Εάν, λέγει, ο Θεός μάς αποκαλεί παιδιά Του, οφείλουμε κι εμείς να ανταποκριθούμε σε αυτή την ιδιότητα που μας δίδει, γιατί δεν έχουμε κανένα όφελος να έχουμε την ονομασία, την προσηγορία του χριστιανού, και όμως στην πραγματικότητα να μην ανταποκρινόμεθα εις αυτήν την ιδιότητά μας. Για να μην ακούσουμε κι εμείς εκείνο που είπε ο Κύριος για τον Αβραάμ στους Εβραίους: «Λέτε ότι είσαστε παιδιά του Αβραάμ. Εάν είσαστε παιδιά του Αβραάμ, και τα έργα του πατρός σας Αβραάμ θα επράττετε, αλλά δεν τα πράττετε». Δηλαδή χρειάζεται, όπως καταλαβαίνετε, αυτή η ανταπόκριση. Είσαι παιδί του Θεού;
