Summary

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem’s Seventh Catechesis, delivered around AD 350 to baptismal candidates, explains the Creed’s confession of one God as Father. Psalms 2 and 110 are interpreted as messianic prophecies proclaiming Christ as the divine Son, David’s Lord, and the eternal priest according to the order of Melchizedek. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are known through one another, so rejecting any person of the Trinity leaves a person without the true God confessed by the Church.

Beloved, we are now in the Seventh Catechesis of Saint Cyril, Archbishop of Jerusalem. As you know, these catechetical lectures were delivered in AD 350. They were, of course, written down by skilled shorthand writers, and it appears that Saint Cyril later edited the texts himself. In this way, these catecheses have been preserved through history as a complete and accomplished work. Nothing is missing—not a single word—and it is considered outstanding of its kind, both in content and, we might say, in its form and teaching method.

We are in the Seventh Catechesis. Its title is: “A Catechesis for Those Preparing for Illumination in Jerusalem, Outlining the Teaching on the Father, with a Reading from the Epistle to the Ephesians: ‘For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named,’ and what follows.” In other words, this catechesis is addressed to those preparing to receive illumination—that is, those preparing for Baptism, who were called “those being illumined”—in the city of Jerusalem. As you see, it was outlined, meaning that this address, this catechesis, was prepared with the Father as its theme, as I was telling you.

Because we always have new brethren among us, I give these explanations. Essentially, throughout his catecheses Saint Cyril does nothing other than interpret the Creed. He first gives a summary of what he will say throughout his analysis of the Creed, because, as he explains, you must first have a complete picture. That is why he begins with this summary. We have, of course, examined these matters in the past. He then gives a detailed analysis in the remaining catecheses, while the last five—there are twenty-four in all—deal

with the Mysteries of the Church and are intended for those who have already been baptized. They are called Mystagogical Catecheses because they concern the Mysteries. He has already spoken to us about faith, because the verb “I believe” stands at the beginning of every article of the Creed. The Creed used here is the Jerusalem Creed, which is almost identical to the Nicene Creed, the familiar one we hear in the Church: “I believe in one God,” and so forth. The verb “I believe” is understood as being repeated in each article, though for literary and stylistic reasons it is not actually repeated. In other words: “I believe in one God.” Then: “I believe in the Lord Jesus Christ.” “I believe in the Holy Spirit.” “I believe in one Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church.” And so forth. The verb “I believe” is implied and understood. Thus, after speaking at length about faith, Saint Cyril enters into the Creed itself. In his previous catechesis, the sixth, he spoke to us about God: “I believe in one God.” He spoke about this one God, and all God’s attributes and divine uncreated energies were examined in the four preceding talks.

The fundamental attribute of God—the first and most important, as we shall see—is not merely that God is without beginning, eternal, present everywhere, holy, righteous, wise, and so forth. His first and chief attribute is that God is Father. Of course, in the Old Testament the Holy Trinity had not yet been revealed; the three persons of the Holy Trinity had not been revealed. They had only been foretold through many signs that remained unexplained. We shall see this in certain prophecies of the Old Testament. The full revelation comes in the person of Jesus Christ, and then we learn that God is Trinity. Yet in the Old Testament God is presented not only as God, but also as Father. Since only one person is being spoken of there—the person of God—He is Father along with all His other attributes, and Father above all. But when God is revealed as Trinity, and the Son is also revealed, then God is certainly the Father of this Son, and He is the Father of the Son according to essence. Yet, as God Himself taught in the Old Testament, the Israelites are also His children.

God says: “Separate yourselves from everything filthy, from everything unclean; touch nothing unclean.” Do not touch anything filthy—meaning morally or spiritually filthy. Do not touch things that are impure, immoral, and contrary to My law. “And I,” He says, “will receive you.” I will welcome you. You shall be My people, and I shall be your God. You shall be My sons and daughters, and I shall be your Father. Thus, in the Old Testament, the secondary meaning of fatherhood—the meaning related to creation—is that God is also the Father of mankind. Even the pagans understood it in this way, if you will. For the concept of the Father

—the element of fatherhood within the deity—is inherent there. The ancient Greeks, though pagans, said that Zeus was the father of gods and men, the father both of gods and of men. You see, then, that the concept of the Father is exceedingly important. But in these few introductory words I have told you what we are going to discuss. Now let us proceed to the analysis of this catechesis. At the beginning, in the first paragraph, Saint Cyril says that we have spoken about God. We mentioned the heretics, whom Saint Cyril calls godless heretics,

and their many-sided delusion and deviations. “We passed through them,” he says literally, “and kept ourselves from their mire and soul-destroying teachings,” and so forth. Now let us come to our subject. Let us leave behind everything we said about the heretics, including what we discussed last time. “Let us therefore return to ourselves.” Let us return to ourselves, Saint Cyril says—that is, let us return to our subject: what concerns us as catechumens, who must learn what we need to know, “and let us receive the saving truths of the true faith, joining the dignity of fatherhood to the confession of the one divine Monarchy,”

“believing in one God, the Father.” Let us join, he says—let us attach—as the first attribute of God that He is not only one, but also Father. It is no accident that the Fathers of our Church placed this attribute of God first. They did not include all those other attributes we have mentioned. God’s attributes are unimaginably numerous, because His divine uncreated energies are numerous. The Fathers include none of these divine uncreated energies except three or four—for example, that He is Almighty, Maker of all things visible and invisible, and so forth. But the first attribute they set down is that of the Father. Is that accidental? As you will see, it is not.

“And let us reverently receive the truth that this Father is the Father of the Only-begotten, our Lord Jesus Christ.” We now come to the second paragraph, since the first is introductory. “In this way we shall think more nobly than the Jews, who receive in their doctrines the teaching that God is one—although what advantage is this, since through idolatry they often denied even that?—but do not accept that He is also the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Thus they contradict their own prophecies, which say in the divine Scriptures: ‘The Lord said to Me: You are My Son; today I have begotten You,’” and so forth. He calls Him Son

because God is one. They accepted that this God is Father, but they did not accept that Jesus Christ has God as His Father. You may remember something from the Gospel according to John. When they picked up stones to stone the Lord as He spoke to them—this happened in Jerusalem—He asked them, “For which good work are you stoning Me?” The Jews answered Him, “We are not stoning You for any good work, but because You have made Yourself equal to God by calling Him Your Father.” For Christ had said:

“I and the Father are one.” He said “the Father,” but He also said, “We are one,” thus making Himself equal to God. You see, my beloved, the Jews understood the matter perfectly. I think that if we could present this passage to the Jehovah’s Witnesses, it would be a very powerful point. What point? The Jews wanted to stone Christ for this reason, and later crucified Him because they understood that Jesus was making this claim. He did not always state it with complete openness, for reasons of divine economy, because He knew that otherwise they would not listen to His preaching. It would be revealed with perfect clarity at Pentecost.

This was a matter of divine economy. They had to hear Him, but they also had to receive Him. If they would not receive Him, He kept veiled what they would reject and would reveal it to them on the day of Pentecost. The Holy Spirit would come to complete what the Lord could speak only in a veiled manner. And what did the Lord say? “I and the Father are one.” Did the Jews understand this? Yes. But He did not merely say that He had God as His Father, for the Jews themselves could say, “We have God as our Father.” That too is written in the Gospel according to John. Here, however, they understood a different attribute: that the Son—Jesus, whom they saw standing before them—

is of the same essence as the Father. That is the awesome truth. They understood it, but did not accept it. And Christ did not deny it. He did not say, “Forgive Me, you have misunderstood Me. There has been a mistake. I did not mean what you understood; I meant something else.” Did Christ say anything of the kind? Nothing. Did He correct anything? Nothing. Did He clarify it differently? Not at all. What He said was precisely what He meant. The Jews clearly understood, then, that the Son is consubstantial—homoousios—with the Father. Completely so. This passage alone would be sufficient to show us how far the Jehovah’s Witnesses have strayed, to say nothing of the countless passages in Holy Scripture that demonstrate the divinity of Jesus Christ and show that the Son has God as His Father by nature. Thus, Saint Cyril says, the Jews accept that God is Father, but not that He is the Father of Jesus Christ according to essence. Saint Cyril now points out that in doing so they oppose the prophets. Here, my beloved, I too would like to use the prophets, though no more than those cited by Saint Cyril. The first prophecy is this:

“The Lord said to Me: ‘You are My Son; today I have begotten You.’” The Lord said to Me: “You are My Son; today I have begotten You.” This is Psalm 2, verse 7. My beloved, according to the interpretations given by the Jews themselves, this second Psalm is messianic—that is, Christological. Yet how could they now accept Christ, given their distorted interpretation? Two persons appear in this Psalm: the person of the Father and the person of the Son. At the end...

a third person appears: the Psalmist, who speaks on behalf of the other two persons. We hear the words, “Lay hold of instruction, lest the Lord be angry and His wrath be kindled,” and so forth. “Lay hold of instruction.” There, as I told you, the Psalmist speaks on behalf of both the Father and the Son. For, as we explained at the monastery during the summer, if you remember, this “instruction” is none other than wisdom. Wisdom has many names: instruction, prudence, understanding. All these names refer to the Wisdom who exists as a person—the second person of the Holy Trinity. It is as though the Psalmist were saying: “Lay hold of Him”—take Him firmly, seize Him with your hands—

“Lay hold of instruction”—that is, lay hold of Jesus Christ—“lest the Lord be angry.” My beloved, we certainly provoke God to anger through our sins. But do you know what the greatest sin is? It is refusing to receive the Son, and thereby denying that God is Father. This is the gravest sin. This is why the Jews were punished through the destruction of Jerusalem, a destruction of a city without parallel in history. I repeat: this is the gravest sin. I may commit fornication or adultery; I may steal or murder. These are sins, and undoubtedly I provoke the wrath of God.

But do they provoke it as greatly as when I deny the Son? For then, according to the words of Christ Himself, I do not have the Father. Whoever does not have the Son does not have the Father either. This is the meaning of atheism according to Holy Scripture, and particularly according to the New Testament. This is what atheism means in the New Testament—not merely that someone does not believe even in some higher power. I have said this before, so forgive me for repeating myself. I repeat points from our earlier subjects and discussions. Those who listen regularly are not harmed by it; they become more firmly established in what they hear. But those who have not heard these things before must also learn something. These repetitions, then, are made for everyone’s sake. I knowingly tell you this again.

Our purpose here is not simply to deliver a talk so that we may say a talk was given, nor to use elegant figures of speech so that you may say the speaker was impressive. No! These are lessons. They are catecheses, so that we may be catechized. And I am the first to be catechized. I am the first, because I sit down, examine these things, and read them in order to speak about them to you. I am the first catechumen, and then you follow. Now, “The Lord said to Me.” Who is this “Me”? The second person. Who is the first Lord? The first Lord is the Father. Thus the Lord, the Father, said to Me, the Son. What did He say to Me? “You are My Son.” You are My Son. “Today I have begotten You.” Today I have begotten You. The word “today” contains

tremendous depth, but I shall not analyze it further now. We shall examine it when we reach the Christological subjects. For the moment I remain only with this point: God the Father is Father because He calls the Son “My Son”; He calls Him Son. The same truth appears in Psalm 110, which Saint Cyril cites a little farther on: “The Lord said to my Lord.” This Psalm is the devastating argument that the Lord presented to the Jews. “Explain this to Me,” He says. “Explain it. How did David, in the Spirit—in the Holy Spirit—say, ‘The Lord said to my Lord: Sit at My right hand...’”

“...until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.” If, then, “the Lord said to my Lord,” and if the Messiah is a descendant of David, as you Jews believe—and rightly so, for He is a descendant of David—but if He is only David’s descendant and is not also God, then how does David call his own descendant “Lord”? Never in the Old Testament does an ancestor call one of his descendants “Lord.” On the contrary, descendants call their ancestors lords. Therefore, although He is indeed a descendant of David, He is also something more. When we say “a descendant of David,” we mean a man from the seed of David. But when David, in the Holy Spirit, calls Him “Lord,” this means that He is not only a descendant according to the flesh, but is also God—that is, the God-Man. “Explain this to Me,” the Lord says to the Jews. They were silenced. They had nothing to say. My dear friends, this psalm is an atomic bomb. It truly shatters and demolishes every objection to the divine-human nature of Jesus Christ. “The Lord said to the Lord”—“The Lord said to my Lord,” David says. One Lord speaks to the other Lord: the Father is Lord, the Son is Lord, and the Holy Spirit is Lord.

Yet we do not have three Lords, because one plus one plus one equals one. There is one Lord—the Lord.

Thank you. “And to this day they rage and gather together against the Lord and against His Christ.” This continues the same psalm. It speaks of those who oppose Him, who rage and turn against Christ—that is, against the One anointed by God. And they continue to do so to this day, Saint Cyril says, from the time this was written. Moreover, Christ Himself said that David wrote the psalm in the Spirit, and this also reveals who authored the psalm.

It is well known that not all 150 Psalms were written by David. David wrote about seventy or eighty—I cannot tell you the exact number at this moment; I do not remember. The rest were written by various people. But take note: all 150 Psalms are divinely inspired. Divinely inspired. Here, however, there is a special significance in the fact that this psalm is authored by David and was therefore written around 1100 BC. I mean Psalm 109, which says, “The Lord said to my Lord.” Psalm 2, meanwhile, says the following.

All the Psalms were written later, with perhaps one or two exceptions that appear to be earlier. One psalm is by Moses, and perhaps another by someone contemporary with Moses. Others are attributed to various figures, such as a certain chief musician, and so on. But take note: they were all written in an age when the tribe of Aaron had already been established as the priestly tribe from which the high priest came. Yet Psalm 109 says, “You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.” It does not say, “according to the order of Aaron.”

So when the Jews read this psalm, or when the rabbis interpreted it, how could they have understood it? This Christ—the Messiah, the Son of God—would possess a new priesthood. This is later interpreted clearly in the New Testament. The Apostle Paul, in Hebrews and elsewhere, explains plainly that the Son of God would not be a priest according to the order of Aaron, because that priesthood served the Old Testament. Now we have the New Testament, a new priesthood, which is not according to the order of Aaron but according to the order of Melchizedek. And do you know what is so striking? Historically speaking, Melchizedek...

...belongs—what I am about to say is not quite correct, but allow it for a moment—he does not belong to the people of God, meaning the descendants of Abraham. That is what I mean when I say he does not belong to the people of God. In every other sense, of course, he does belong to the people of God; he is part of the remnant of the righteous upon the earth. Certainly he belongs to the people of God, for how could it be otherwise when he becomes a type of Jesus Christ? But he does not belong to the people of Abraham. Is it not strange, then, that the Jews accept a psalm which speaks of a priesthood other than the priesthood of Aaron, the priesthood appointed by God on Sinai through Moses? Very strange indeed. Yet the Jews, the custodians of the truth, did not believe.

They preserved the truth for us. And we Christians, illumined by the Holy Spirit, draw out all these things and say, “How astonishing! Why do the Jews not understand?” The Apostle Paul told us: they have a veil before them, he says, and they cannot see. How does this veil remain? When Moses came down from Sinai, his face shone with divine glory, and they asked him to put on a veil because they could not bear to look at him. Paul says that this veil remains over their eyes to this very day. To put it in plain language, it is a blindfold. They have a blindfold and cannot see. My dear friends, a publication called The Jewish Chronicles is in circulation. It is a magazine that comes out every month, I believe. Some of you have supplied me with copies.

I keep informed; I glance through it and see how they interpret the Old Testament. It is remarkable. They interpret it just as they did two thousand years ago, in the time of Christ—or rather, just as they have always interpreted the prophets. And how is that? They understand the Messiah in material, worldly terms. They see that the Messiah has not come—two thousand years have passed. The Messiah did come, but He did not conform to their expectations. Do you know what they say now? That the Messiah is not a person. Unfortunately, even some theologians say this. They claim He is not a person, but a people, and that this people is Israel. Now, at this point, and at other times...

...we examine rather more theological subjects, and this may give the impression that they are not the practical subjects we would prefer for our everyday lives, as we usually call them. My dear friends, allow me to say this: let us move beyond this worn-out habit of wanting only to be taught that we must not steal and must not tell lies. Once we learn who our Lord and our God is, believe me, we will neither steal nor lie. And what we suffer from today, what we truly need, is to learn who our God is.

For even Buddhism tells us not to lie. But if I learn who my God is, I will not deny Him, no matter how many currents flood into our homeland. So do not think that these things are of little use to us. No, they are supremely useful and supremely important. After all, they constitute the very content of the Church’s catechesis. This is what shows us what the Church’s catechesis truly is. Let us not seek mere moral instruction. Of course we must live a spiritual and moral life; there is no question about that. But it is not right to stop at moral instruction. For morality, if you will allow me to use that term, is nourished by nothing other than theology. In other words, we must learn who God is.

I return again to God. “How will you be counted worthy to enter into God’s presence?” What did Christ say? “I am the way.” What way? The way that leads to the Father. What did Christ say? “I am the door.” What door? Where does this door lead? It leads to the Father. Therefore, if...

...I do not follow the way, which is Christ, and do not enter through the door, which is Christ, how will I reach the Father? It is inconceivable. For this reason, we cannot know God the Father unless we accept Jesus Christ. Indeed, there is a mutual order of knowledge among the three persons of the Holy Trinity, and this also reveals the equality of the persons. It is as follows: the New Testament, in the Gospel according to John, says that unless the Father draws you to the Son, you cannot come to Him.

In simple terms, I come to know the Son through the Father. Conversely, no one comes to the Father except through the Son. How will I know the Father? Through the Son. And again, the Apostle Paul says, “No one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit.” No one can call Jesus “Lord”—that is, God—unless he has the Holy Spirit. Conversely, no one receives the Holy Spirit, as we see at Pentecost, unless he has first accepted Christ. Is this not clear? It reveals the equality of the persons of the Holy Trinity. Let me sum it up. I cannot reach the Father except through the Son. I cannot reach and receive the Son...

...unless the Father draws me. I cannot reach the Holy Spirit except through the Son. I cannot reach the Son except through the Holy Spirit. Is this not astonishing? Either you accept all three persons, or you have no God. This is why our Church—and I stress this: you have no God—fought against the heresies, not out of barren fanaticism, but against both the Christological and the Pneumatological heresies, those who opposed Christ and those who opposed the Holy Spirit. Why did the Church fight them? Precisely so that the Church and the faithful might have God. For if they do not have God, they have nothing.

Saint Cyril draws four points from Psalm 88. Let us look at Psalm 88. The psalm speaks of the Father calling the Son His Son and therefore being the Father of the Son. I turn, as I said, to Psalm 88, verse 27, and read: “He shall call upon Me.” Who is “he”? The Messiah...

...who will appear among men in human form. Yet He cannot possess only a human nature. You will see below descriptions which, as Saint Cyril rightly observes, cannot be applied either to Solomon or to David, those glorious kings. “He shall call upon Me: ‘You are my Father, my God, and the protector of my salvation.’” “You are my Father and my God.” Here, however, the Son is speaking according to His human nature. And you know that the prophecies concerning Christ, the Christological prophecies...

...sometimes speak of His human nature and at other times of His divine nature. They alternate. The passage continues: “And I will make Him My firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth.” I will make Him the firstborn, it says, and His exaltation will be above all the kings of the earth. “And I will establish His seed forever and ever, and His throne as the days of heaven.” And I will make His seed—that is, I will establish...

...His seed eternally, forever and ever. What is His seed? It is the faithful; it is the Church. Do not forget that the Church sprang from the side of Christ. The blood and the water—Baptism and the Holy Eucharist—unite human beings to the body of Christ and make them His body, that is, the Church. The Church sprang from the side of Christ while He slept the sleep of the Cross, just as God caused Adam to sleep...

...so that He might bring Eve forth from his side. That event—the creation of Eve from Adam’s side—was a type pointing to its prototype: Christ and the Church. “And His throne as the days of heaven.” Do you know what “the days of heaven” means? It means the age of the universe, millions of years. What king lives for millions of years? This goes beyond not merely human history, but is compared with the history of creation itself. How does the passage continue?

“I have sworn by My holiness; I will not lie to David.”

I have sworn. I have sworn that I will never lie to David, because David is the one who writes the psalm and becomes the guardian of these great revelations. “His seed shall remain forever, and his throne shall be like the sun before Me, and like the moon established forever, and the witness in heaven is faithful.” Whose seed is this? David’s. My dear friends, today the Jews can no longer speak of the seed of David. It reached its fulfillment in the person of Jesus Christ. The Jews passed through many historical trials...

especially the worst of them, the Babylonian captivity. Yet despite all their historical and national trials, they preserved their genealogical records. The Northern Kingdom had come to an end with its ten tribes. There had been twelve tribes, but in the end the tribe of Judah came to prominence. The ten disappeared, and two remained: Benjamin and Judah, with Jerusalem as their capital. Finally, because the tribe of Benjamin was very small, it was absorbed, so to speak, into the tribe of Judah. So to speak. Thus, only the tribe of Judah is mentioned, with Jerusalem as its capital.

This populous tribe went to Babylon. It passed through all these trials, returned after seventy years, and rebuilt the Temple that Nebuchadnezzar had destroyed. They kept their genealogical records. Matthew and Luke would later set them forth: so many generations down to the Babylonian captivity, and so many generations from there onward, as Luke and Matthew record. No Jew ever disputed the genealogy of Jesus Christ. The blind man of Jericho would cry out, “Son of David, have mercy on me.” The title “Son of David” meant, “You are the Messiah,” although, of course, the Jews did not understand much more than that.

He was the Messiah. No one corrected him; no one said, “What is he saying about this man, calling Him a descendant of David?” The genealogical records were there. When Christ cited Psalm 109 and said, “The Lord said to my Lord,” and that David had said this in the Holy Spirit, no one said to Christ, “What are You trying to say—that these words refer to You?” No one said that, because it was never disputed that Jesus descended from the tribe of Judah, and more specifically from the line of David. No one disputed it. My dear friends, the Jews disputed only the divinity of Jesus Christ...

which they could not comprehend. And so here, in a wondrous way, we see it said that “his seed shall remain forever.” Whose seed? David’s. The line of David was scattered to the four corners of the earth when Jerusalem was destroyed in AD 70. Today the Jews no longer have tribes—and not merely today; this has been so ever since that time. They no longer have tribes. A Jew cannot say, “I belong to this tribe or that tribe.” What does this mean? David’s line came to an end because it was no longer needed. It had brought forth the Messiah. Yet what does the prophecy say here? It says that “his seed shall remain forever.” For as long as history endures—that is what “forever” means here.

“It shall remain forever.” What, then, is now the seed of David? My dear friends, it is the Church. It is Christ and, from Christ, the faithful. It is the Church. Then it continues, “And his throne.” Whose throne? David’s? Solomon’s? “Like the sun before Me.” In other words, the throne is enduring—not merely radiant, but enduring. “And like the moon established forever.” Just as the moon was created to remain, so too does the throne of the Messiah remain: His throne, the throne of the Messiah, of Christ. So you see how this psalm speaks of the Son: at one moment it refers to His divine nature, and at another to His human nature.

Let us continue.

Saint Cyril refers to Psalm 109, which, of course, I mentioned to you earlier. Here is another point: “For if they maintain that these things were spoken of David, or Solomon, or any of their successors, let them show how the throne of the one foretold is like the days of heaven, like the sun before God, and like the moon established forever.” If they wished, he says, to force the interpretation—to offer what we call a far-fetched interpretation—then however far they might stretch it, let them show us to whom this prophecy could refer. To David? To Solomon? Impossible. They died, and their line disappeared. To whom, then, could it refer except...

There was still something else I wanted to tell you. If you ask precisely why...

In the fifth paragraph he says—I am jumping ahead a little and not following the text line by line, because if we had to take every single point one at a time, my dear friends, we would not finish Saint Cyril in fifty years, though I sincerely wish we could—“For He takes greater glory in this than in all His other dignities.” God takes greater glory in the title of Father than in the titles of Ruler of all, almighty, impassible, and so forth. Why is that? I will give you an example, and you will understand. But before I give you the example, let me ask: how great would it be if God the Father were not Father, but only Ruler of all?

However great that dignity might be, the fact that another person is beside Him, a person whose Father He is, means that God exists in communion; and this is far greater than being Ruler of all. That is why God takes greater glory in the title of Father. Now for the example. Have you noticed that at every feast of the Theotokos, and even in the services dedicated to her, prophecies are read which serve as types of the Theotokos—prophecies concerning the Tabernacle of Witness, and so forth? Yet one prophecy in particular is always read. It is from Ezekiel.

It is the prophecy that says, “And the Lord showed me a gate,” and this gate, it says, was shut. God would pass through this gate, and it would remain shut. Pay attention: God would pass through this gate, and the gate would remain shut. No one else would pass through it—only God. This reveals the Ever-Virginity of the Theotokos. God passed through the Theotokos. Now, that expression is a little dangerous. Do not accuse me of falling into the heresy of Nestorius because I said “through the Theotokos.” It was simply a passing expression.

Through the gate of the Theotokos, I mean. No one else passed through it, and He left the gate shut. In other words, the Theotokos remained a virgin. Strictly speaking, of course, God did not merely pass through the Theotokos; He took up His dwelling in her and received flesh from her. That is the correct expression. He did not pass through the Theotokos as though she were a pipe through which the Son of God passed. No. He received flesh from the Theotokos. Now pay attention: why is this prophecy always read? My dear friends, we can ascribe countless attributes to the Theotokos. We can call her all-holy—that is, entirely holy. Super-holy, you might say!

Thank you. Forgive the expression: super-holy! Call her whatever you wish: all-holy, all-immaculate—use any title you like. Yet every title pales before this great title of the Theotokos. The Latins speak of Mariology; we speak of Theotokology, not Mariology. We focus less on the other attributes of the Most Holy Theotokos than on the fact that she is Theotokos, the God-bearer: that she gave birth to God after giving Him human flesh, human nature. This is the Great Title, before which all the heavenly powers...

bow down and pale by comparison. When our troparia say that the Theotokos is more spacious than the heavens, more glorious than the Cherubim, and more honorable than the Seraphim, these are not merely poetic expressions. They express reality, because the whole created spiritual order pales before this fact: that a human being—the Theotokos, Mary—became the Theotokos, the God-bearer. This, then, is the Great Title. The Theotokos, Mary, takes glory in this title: that she is the Theotokos, the Mother of God, the Mother of God. For this same reason, the Father takes glory in being the Father of the Son. This is something exceedingly great. Would you like me to explain it with an example?

Admittedly, it may not be a perfect example, but it will serve in this case. Suppose one of you succeeds in his profession, receives high honors, builds houses, buys fields, and, in the end, also has a child. In which of these could he take the greatest pride? In buying a house, building a house, buying fields, or having a child? Where does his greatest dignity lie? In having a child. That is his greatest dignity. This is how I want you to understand it. Saint Cyril himself explains here why God the Father takes glory in being Father—the Father of the Son.

In the fourth paragraph he says: “For the Father is necessarily Father because He is the Father of the Son; for if He is Father, He is certainly the Father of a Son. And the Son is necessarily Son because He is the Son of the Father; for if there is a Son, He is surely the Son of a Father. Therefore, lest by saying, ‘And in one God, the Father Almighty...’”

“Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible,’ and then adding, ‘And in one Lord Jesus Christ,’ someone should irreverently suppose that the Only-Begotten is second in rank to heaven and earth, we therefore named God as Father before naming those created things, so that as soon as we think of the Father, we may also think of the Son. For among all existing things, nothing comes between the Son and the Father.” Let me put this in my own words, since we have only five minutes left. You know that there is always a danger in how something is worded. How imperfect we human beings are—how imperfect! There can be danger in the wording of certain articles, such as articles in a constitution. What arguments can arise over them! Thank you.

Previously, the first article referred to the Holy Trinity. Not now. We place it third—or wherever they have placed it; I do not know—fifth, tenth; eventually they will remove it altogether. Its placement is decisive if it comes first. If it comes second or third, the Holy Trinity begins to cease being the guiding principle. Now pay attention to the wording of the articles of the Creed. Because it says, “In one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible,” someone might notice that the name of Jesus Christ is mentioned only after the creation of heaven and earth and conclude...

someone might conclude that Jesus Christ—that is, the Son—came after the creation of the world and is therefore second, not first. Saint Cyril says that it was right to state at the very beginning that God is Father. This prepares us to understand that God is the Father of the Son, of whom the Creed will speak a little later, simply because of the order in which it is worded. This is a subtle observation by Saint Cyril. It is subtle, but lawyers know how much a single word can matter in court, even determining whether a case is won or lost. And since there are always enemies of the faith who may say, “Look, He is mentioned after heaven and earth,” this is precisely how heretics twist such things. Do you understand?

So, to silence such objections, the Synod of Nicaea—or here, at least, the Jerusalem Creed—makes clear that the Son did not come after the creation of heaven and earth. Rather, Father and Son are together, and the Creed will speak more fully about the Son later. But as you can see, my dear ones, this matter is extremely important. For if we ever truly understand it, then we shall say what the Apostle Paul says: “I bow my knees before the Father of Jesus Christ.” I bow my knees. This is a great thing. He says this in the Epistle to the Ephesians as well.

My knees. And then we too shall understand, as far as we are able to enter into the mystery of the Godhead, and we shall love the Holy Trinity with all our heart. We will continue.

να βγάλει από την πλευρά του την Εύα. Εκείνο το τότε γεγονός της δημιουργίας της Εύας από την πλευρά του Αδάμ είναι τύπος ενός πρωτοτύπου, Εκκλησίας και Χριστού. «Καὶ τὸν θρόνον αὐτοῦ ὡς τὰς ἡμέρας τοῦ οὐρανοῦ». Ξέρετε ποιες είναι οι ημέρες του Ουρανού; Είναι η ηλικία του σύμπαντος, εκατομμύρια χρόνια. Ποιος βασιλεύς υπάρχει που να ζει εκατομμύρια χρόνια; Εδώ ξεπερνάει όχι απλώς την ανθρώπινη ιστορία, αλλά συγκρίνεται με την ιστορία της δημιουργίας. Πώς συνεχίζει;

προσκυνούν και ωχριούν. Όταν δηλαδή λέγουν τα τροπάρια μας ότι είναι η Θεοτόκος πλατυτέρα των Ουρανών, ενδοξοτέρα και τιμιωτέρα των Χερουβείμ και των Σεραφείμ, δεν είναι ποιητικές εκφράσεις. Είναι η έκφραση της πραγματικότητας, διότι όλη η κτιστή νοητή δημιουργία ωχριά μπροστά σε αυτό το γεγονός, ότι ένας άνθρωπος, η Θεοτόκος, η Μαρία, εστάθηκε Θεοτόκος. Συνεπώς, είναι ο Μέγας Τίτλος. Η Θεοτόκος, η Μαρία, θα σεμνύνεται δι' αυτόν τον τίτλο, ότι είναι η Θεοτόκος. Μητέρα του Θεού, μητέρα του Θεού. Γι' αυτό το λόγο σεμνύνεται και ο Πατήρ, ότι είναι Πατήρ του Υιού, γι' αυτόν τον λόγο. Είναι πολύ μεγάλο πράγμα. Θέλετε να σας το πω με ένα παράδειγμα;

μετά από τη δημιουργία του κόσμου είναι ο Ιησούς Χριστός, δηλαδή ο Υιός, και συνεπώς είναι δεύτερος, δεν είναι πρώτος. Ορθά, λέει, μπήκε στην αρχή ότι ο Θεός είναι Πατήρ. Μας προδιαθέτει ότι ο Θεός είναι Πατήρ Υιού, για τον οποίον, για λόγους διατυπώσεως, θα μιλήσει λίγο πιο κάτω. Είναι λεπτή η παρατήρηση αυτή του Αγίου Κυρίλου. Λεπτή, αλλά όσοι είναι δικηγόροι και ξέρουν πώς μπορούν να χειρίζονται κάποτε τα πράγματα στο δικαστήριο για να κερδίσουν ή να χάσουν μια μάχη, από μία λέξη έχει πολύ σημασία. Και επειδή υπάρχουν πάντοτε οι εχθροί της πίστης που μπορούν να πουν «για κοίταξε, μπαίνει μετά τον ουρανό και τη γη», το πάνε οι αιρετικοί αυτά τα πράγματα. Καταλαβαίνετε;
