Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem presents idolatry as the irrational worship of created things—stone, wood, animals, nature, and human inventions—in place of the transcendent Creator. The Son of God became incarnate because all things were created through Him, so He came to heal creation’s estrangement and restore it to the Father. Against dualism, the lecture affirms one God as Creator of both spirit and matter and teaches that evil resides not in created substance, the body, marriage, or sexuality themselves, but in a corrupted free will and sinful use.

My dear friends, we are in the sixth catechetical lecture, and I am continuing with the subject of God as Saint Cyril of Jerusalem develops it here for his catechumens. You will remember that, after giving God many titles—that is, many names, many attributes, and many divine uncreated energies—he turns to the matter at hand and says that, in spite of all this, man was unable to see God, that is, to know God. Instead, he took a stone, carved and shaped it into an image, and said, “You are my God.” He took a piece of wood
which God had planted and which the rain had made tall and strong—a piece of wood that can be burned and reduced to ashes—and man proclaimed this to be God, saying, “You are my God,” while the true God was treated with contempt. This is the phenomenon of idolatry. Saint Cyril continues by giving examples of idolatry precisely to show how irrational it is. For idolatry, my dear friends, is not a thing of the past. It is something that will always exist. I have explained to you that it is not without reason that John the Evangelist ends his First Epistle with the words, “Little children, keep yourselves from idols.” And in our own time we see that idolatry is a reality. I do not mean the idolatry of the indigenous peoples of South America, Central Australia, or Africa—people who have not heard the Gospel and remain idolaters. I am speaking of Christians: Christians who are turning back again to idolatry. That is what we are discussing, and it is a great tragedy. This is why I told you that idolatry has neither died nor will it die. On the contrary, it will
increase. Consider the Greek philosopher—do not forget that I am quite tired and sometimes cannot remember things—Plethon, George Gemistos Plethon. He was one of the last Byzantines. He was, of course, a theologian and a distinguished philosopher who attracted many disciples. Eventually he settled in Mystras, which was flourishing at that time, and taught there as a master.
Plethon, or Gemistos, once said something worthy of attention. He said, “And yet, one day idolatry will live again. I am a Christian, but secretly an idolater.” This man longed for the ancient idolatry of former times. When I first read this, I was horrified. And it is true that idolatry will one day return, though this will happen toward the Last Things (eschata), and it will remain only for a short time. Idolatry is smoldering beneath the surface. What is Freemasonry, my dear friends? Freemasonry is idolatry. We must understand this.
The Great Architect of the Universe—the G.A.O.T.U.—is the sun. That is why, just as our iconostasis bears Christ, the Most Holy Theotokos, and the Saints, they place the sun and the moon on the left and right of their platform. They are idolaters. There can be no doubt about this, since Freemasonry is indeed a religion and, as I keep telling you, it is an idolatrous religion. I emphasize this once again. Thus idolatry is always smoldering beneath the surface, always present among Christian peoples. Idolatry is in our blood. Indeed, I might even say that there is no one who is entirely free of superstition.
Is there anyone who has never performed some act of magic, even once in his life? What do I mean by an act of magic? I do not necessarily mean going to a sorcerer, but doing something magical—for example, trying to learn the future by magical means, and so forth. Thus, within the veins of us who are Christians, even as we sit here listening to the Word of God, there is also a pagan element, an idolatrous element. We need only scratch beneath the surface, and we will find it. Yes. And when conditions are favorable, this idolatry flares up. It is a strange thing. This is why the things Saint Cyril says are not merely conditions belonging to the past. They remain relevant today.
He gives several examples. It was not only carved images and pieces of wood that were worshiped, but other things as well: “The cat, the wolf, and the dog were worshiped in place of God.” In other words, the cat, the wolf, and the dog were adored instead of God. “And the man-eating lion”—the lion that devours human beings—“was worshiped in place of the God who loves mankind beyond measure. The serpent and the dragon, images of the one who drove us out of Paradise, were worshiped.” Indeed, later there arose the heresy known as that of the Ophites, the serpent worshipers, who have left their mark on history.
Even today in America, my dear friends, the worship of the serpent is returning. Yes, the worship of the serpent, of the snake, just as the worship of Satan is returning in what is called Satanism. The argument is this: the good God—and this involves dualism, which we shall examine shortly—has no need to be appeased, implored, or entreated, because He is good in Himself and will therefore always grant us what is good. It is the evil spirit, Satan, whom we must appease, entreat, and implore. Through worship, they say, we must win Satan over so that he will not harm us.
This, my dear friends, is the position held by Satanists today, and it is extremely relevant. Satanism exists in Greece, in Europe, and in America. From time to time, these things come to public attention. “I blush,” Saint Cyril says—meaning, “I am ashamed to say it”—“but I will say it: even onions have already been worshiped by some.” Even onions, he says, were worshiped by certain people. “God gave wine to gladden the heart of man, and Dionysus was worshiped in place of God.” God gave us wine, and we made Dionysus, the god of wine. Tell me, please, tell me,
at all these wine festivals, what do you think is really being celebrated? What do you think is being worshiped? Is God being worshiped, or is something else? Do people go to these wine festivals held throughout Greece, take a little glass of wine, and say, “Glory to God. God has given us wine, which gladdens the heart of man”? Is that what happens, or do we give ourselves over to drunkenness and other forms of debauchery? What, then, is being worshiped? The goat-footed Dionysus and his debauchery are being worshiped, without question. You see, then, what people are doing today. “God brought forth wheat by saying, ‘Let the earth bring forth green plants, yielding seed according to their kind and likeness,’ so that bread might strengthen the heart of man. How, then, did Demeter come to be worshiped?”
Bread—the bread itself—and yet we worship Demeter as the one who gives us bread. But Demeter does not give it to us. And do you know what the name Demeter means? Dē means earth, and mētēr means mother. She is the earth. We worship the earth and regard the earth—which is why the word is feminine in Greek—as
the mother who provides us with every good thing to eat. The word for sun, by contrast, is masculine in Greek because the sun is regarded as the male god. This is found in Baalism and in the cults of Osiris and Isis: Osiris is the sun, and Isis is the earth.
And when Freemasonry says, “To the G.A.O.T.U.,” it means—pardon me—“To the glory of the Great Architect of the Universe.” Who is this Great Architect? It is the sun, which supposedly orders and fashions everything upon the earth: its sunlight, its heat, and all the rest. Through these, we have rain, snow, rivers, seas, and vegetation. When the sun declines toward the winter solstice, nature appears to die. This is also connected with the well-known myth of Hiram. Then, in summer, when the sun rises toward the summer solstice, we have what they call the resurrection of the sun, and so forth. All of this is nature worship.
Nature worship, sun worship, earth worship. Only someone with ten diopters of nearsightedness—someone who is, forgive me, nearly blind—could fail to understand and see that creation is being worshiped and that this is idolatry in its crudest form. Yes, my dear friends. “Fire still comes forth today when stones are struck together; how, then, did Hephaestus become the maker of fire?” Even today, he says, we can take two flints, strike them together, and produce a flame. On what grounds, then, is Hephaestus said to be the maker of fire? God made these things: the true God, the transcendent God, who is not matter. This is why the worship of the true God is not idolatry. But what, then, is idolatry? What does the word mean? I have told you before.
God’s divine uncreated energies, my dear friends, are reflected, so to speak, within creation. It is as though creation were a mirror in which God is reflected—that is, God’s attributes and divine uncreated energies, His wisdom, His power, His love, His providence, and His governance. Fallen man no longer has the ability to look beyond nature and say, “Could the mountain, the sea, or the sun ever be my God? There must be Someone behind them.” He lacks this ability. Because he is nearsighted—which is why I called him nearly blind—he sees only what is directly in front of him. He does not look beyond it, and he imagines that nature itself gives him these good things. Nature does not give them to him. Behind nature stands the Creator of nature,
the Creator of creation. This is why it is called idolatry: the worship of an image of God. Creation is an image of God because, as I explained, God’s divine uncreated energies and attributes are reflected in it. Should I, then, worship the image of God, or God Himself? I shall worship God. “How great is the delusion concerning the gods of the Greeks! God is bodiless.” God is bodiless; God is transcendent. “How, then, can acts of adultery be attributed to those whom they call gods? I shall say nothing more”—I shall not explain these things further—“I shall say nothing about the transformations of Zeus into a swan.” I shall be silent, he says, about those transformations in which Zeus changed himself into a swan. “I blush to speak of his transformation into a bull.”
“His transformation into a bull—for bellowing is unworthy of God.” Zeus, he says, changed himself into a bull. You know the story: he abducted Europa, and so forth. Bellowing means the lowing of cattle. Is God a bull who bellows? “The god of the Greeks is found to be an adulterer, and they are not ashamed.” Zeus, the god of the Greeks, is exposed as an adulterer.
Are they not ashamed to worship an adulterous god? “For if he is an adulterer, let him not be called God.” If he is an adulterer, how can he be called a god? “They also speak of deaths, falls, and gods being struck by thunderbolts. Do you see from what great heights they have fallen, and how low they have descended?” My dear friends, I now want you to pay attention to a beautiful paragraph. Photograph it, Mr. Lou.
“Did the Son of God come down from heaven in vain? Or did He come to heal so great a wound? Did the Son come in vain? Or did He come so that the Father might be known? Do you understand what moved the Only-Begotten to descend from the throne at the right hand and come down to earth? The Father was being treated with contempt; therefore, the Son had to correct the error. For it was fitting that He through whom all things came into being should bring all things back to the Master of all. The wound had to be healed. For what disease could be worse than this: that a stone should be worshiped in place of God?” Was it in vain, then, that the Son of God came down from heaven to heal so great a wound? Did the Son of God come in vain to make the Father known?
Do you understand what moved the Only-Begotten to leave the right hand of God and come down here to earth? It was because the Father was being treated with contempt. The Son therefore had to correct the error. Why did the Son have to correct it? Here we have an answer to why the second Person became man, rather than the first Person,
the third Person. Why did the Father not become man? Why did the Spirit of God, the Holy Spirit, not become man? Why was it the Son? This is the reason. This is why I told you to pay attention: because the Son created the world. Of course, the Father creates through the Son in the Holy Spirit, but the Maker of the world is the Son.
Saint Cyril says here, as he also mentions elsewhere, “through whom all things were made.” Everything was made through the Son, and nothing that exists was made apart from the Son. Therefore, when all these things became distorted, changed their course, and drew away from God, the Son—the Maker of the world, the Creator—took it upon Himself to become man, so that He might bring creation, which had gone astray and rebelled, back to the Father. This, then, is why the Son of God became man. It is truly beautiful: first, why it was the second Person; and second, why the Incarnation took place. This is the reason. Here, my dear friends, we come to the end of a section, we might say, that
concerns God. And Saint Cyril continues, still in this same sixth catechetical lecture, to tell us that idolatry was not, and is not, the only phenomenon. There is another phenomenon called heresy. Heresy, in its turn, comes to distort the truth. There are, then, two paths by which we ultimately enter the realm of atheism—that is, ignorance of God: idolatry and heresy. Indeed, as you will see, Saint Cyril, like the Fathers of our Church, calls heretics atheists. Perhaps this will surprise you. How can a heretic be called an atheist?
He might be called an “Antichrist” if, let us say, he attacks Christological doctrine. We say, “The Chiliasts are Antichrists.” But in the language of the Fathers of our Church, both the Chiliasts and all heretics without exception are atheists. Listen to why. And would you believe it? Even the Jews are atheists. You will say to me, “But they remained with the Old Testament. Are they atheists?” Listen to why. You must understand what atheism means and how different that meaning is from the one we use today. When someone says, “I believe in a higher power,” we say, “He is not an atheist.” We call only the person who accepts absolutely nothing an atheist. But the meaning of atheism in Holy Scripture is very different.
John the Evangelist says it: “He who does not have the Son does not have the Father either.” That settles it. He who does not have the Son does not have the Father either. Do you deny the Son—that is, do you deny Jesus Christ? Then you cannot possibly have the Father either. The Jews deny the Son; consequently, they do not have the Father either. That is why they are without the Son and without the Father, and are therefore atheists. It is very simple. Remember this. Yet we have reached such a dreadful state that, merely because someone says, “I believe in a higher power”—some poor little soul—we say that, amid the general climate of atheism, at least he believes in something and is not entirely an atheist.
He accepts something. No, my dear friends, no. We ought to tremble before this true understanding that I have explained to you and demonstrated from what Holy Scripture teaches about God. Bearing this in mind, therefore, we must be extremely careful about heresy. Saint Cyril devotes many pages here to heretics in general. There are so many that I have underlined only a few points on which I wish to dwell, without recounting the stories concerning each of these heretical figures. I shall mention only their names, and I shall give particular attention to just one name, because that name is of very great importance.
“The devil devised these things not only among the Gentiles. Many who are falsely called Christians, wrongly bearing the most fragrant name of Christ, have dared impiously to estrange God from His own creations.” In other words, it was not only the Gentiles—you know that here the word “Gentile” means an idolater—not only the idolaters who were moved by the devil. The devil also moved Christians to embrace a distorted, crooked faith, so that in the end they would estrange God from creation
—creation from God, or God from creation—and ultimately estrange man from salvation. This is very real, because when we do not have the right faith, we do not have salvation either. Listen to the terms he uses: “the children of the heretics, the ill-named and utterly atheistic.” “Ill-named” means those who bear a bad name, those of evil repute.
Literally, those who have a bad name. Do you see what he calls them? “Utterly atheistic.” Please underline that and remember it when you leave: utterly atheistic. “They pretend to be lovers of Christ, but in truth they are altogether haters of Christ.” They pretend to love Christ, but in reality they hate Christ.
Do you now understand, my dear friends, what blasphemies are spoken by those who say that Christ was a great philosopher or a sociologist? Do you understand this? “For whoever slanders the Father of Christ is an enemy of the Son.” The one who slanders the Father of Christ is an enemy of the Son. “They dared to say that there are two divinities, one good and one evil. O what great blindness! If it is divinity, it must surely be good; but if it is not good, how can it be called divinity?” Here, then, my dear friends, Saint Cyril comes to the heart of the matter. He is speaking essentially about the Gnostics.
In those days, the Gnostics were the heretics. Who were the Gnostics? I ask you to pay very close attention to Gnosticism, because Gnosticism, my dear friends, is alive and flourishing in our own time. Gnosticism is alive and flourishing. I am telling you this from the outset so that you will pay attention. You see that in Freemasonry there is the so-called Blazing Star, at the center of which is a French or, if you prefer, an English letter G: A, B, C, D, E, F, G—the English G. Its Greek equivalent is gamma: the letter gamma.
Take a Masonic book and learn what this G, or gamma, means; you will learn many things from it. This letter has many meanings. I shall take only one, the one relevant to us. This gamma, or G if you prefer, comes from the Greek word gnosis. In foreign languages, the Greek word gnosis, written with a capital G, remains gnosis. They do not translate the word; they preserve it in its purely Greek form, gnosis, and it means
that the whole system of Freemasonry moves and revolves around this “knowledge”—the very thing Saint Cyril is now opposing and that the Church opposed during the first three centuries. What is this gnosis? We shall now see what it is. I have told you this so that you may see how relevant the subject is today and that Gnosticism, unfortunately, has not died. Gnosticism has been adopted by modern Freemasonry; it is its foundation. But you will see more as we continue. The heretics dared, he says, to teach “two gods and two sources, one of good and one of evil, both of them uncreated.”
Saint Cyril tells you many things. I shall take this point and express it in my own words. Fundamentally, Gnosticism is based on dualism. What does that mean? It means that its foundation is belief in two gods
without beginning—both without beginning and eternal: the god of good and the god of evil. In fact, all the philosophical systems of antiquity are fundamentally dualistic, every one of them without exception, including Plato’s. When Plato regarded the body as the prison of the soul, that was dualism: the good god made the good souls, while the evil god made the bodies.
The evil god is associated with matter, while the good god is associated with spirits. Here you immediately see dualism. What is the correct teaching? God is one. Indeed, the Old Testament very often says that God is the Creator of spirits and of all flesh. Listen to this phrase; it comes from the Wisdom of Solomon, one of the Wisdom books. God is the Creator of spirits and of all flesh. There is no dualism in Christianity. There is one God, the God of both matter and spirit. This is why our service books say, “the God of spirits.” The God of spirits. We do not say “the God of men”; we say, “the God of spirits and of all flesh.”
This is a circumlocution, as though we were dividing man into two, taking his body and his soul and naming them separately. The Hebrews were never dualists. Never! A Hebrew would never say, “God made my spirit,” or, “God made my body.” God made man. The Hebrew is never dualistic. The Greek is dualistic—or rather, all peoples outside the Hebrews, outside the true faith in God. That is why we find dualism in every ancient religion of the world, in every philosophical system of antiquity, and also in every modern philosophical system that has no connection with Christianity.
This is extremely important. It means that here we see man’s attempt to explain—and this is where dualism came from—how evil arose, where it came from, and how it exists. The answer is that evil resides in the free choice of the will; there is no god of evil. Matter is not evil in itself. How could matter be evil in itself, since God made it good? The devil is not evil in his essence, because God created the devil’s essence. The devil is evil not in his essence but in the choice of his will. To show you how deeply this dualism lies hidden in our everyday life,
let me tell you that we often regard as unclean things that are not unclean. We often regard menstrual blood as unclean; we often regard semen as unclean, and so forth. These things are not unclean in themselves. Saint Athanasius the Great, in one of his letters that acquired canonical authority, says: “Is semen unclean? May it never be! Semen unclean? Never.” It is God’s creation. What is unclean is the choice of the will. Fornication is unclean, not the bodily union of human beings. Holy Matrimony is not unclean. How many of our Christians say and believe that Holy Matrimony is unclean! Holy Matrimony is not unclean; fornication is unclean. In other words, anything outside the will of God and the blessing of God
is unclean. Sin is unclean. But this uncleanness lies in the choice of the will, not in essence and not in matter. I believe we have understood this. Thus, my dear friends, the Gnostics tried to take elements of truth from everything that existed in their time. Gnosticism appeared with the conquests of Alexander the Great. A kind of global culture came into being—and globalism does not always need to frighten us; it has good elements and bad ones, as every global culture does, and we should understand that. Because Alexander the Great conquered the whole world then known, from Greece as far as...
as far as the Indus River and Egypt, ideas began to circulate—religious and philosophical ideas alike—and were blended together in a common mixture. Forgive me for using such expressions, but I want to make myself more readily understood. They formed a medley, and this is how Gnosticism arose. Gnosticism, of course, is nothing other than what is called philosophical—and, to use the more scholarly term—philosophical and religious syncretism. In Greek, the word is spelled with eta, not iota. I will not explain further. Although the term is unfamiliar, it is said to derive from the Cretans, though we do not know much more precisely; it means a mixture.
It is a medley of philosophical and religious ideas. Please remember this; it is very important, just as I am explaining it to you. When Christianity appeared, Gnosticism regarded it as something extremely valuable and important, and tried to appropriate it. It sought to take elements from the Gospel and make them its own—not the Gospel itself, but only those elements that suited its purposes. Above all, it took Jesus Christ, His very person. And what did it produce? What did it claim? Truly fabulous things. It is enough to mention, as Saint Cyril does here, several heretics of his time, such as
Carpocrates, Menander, Basilides, and above all Marcion, along with countless others. Valentinus, and so forth. He calls Basilides ill-named, and so on. What, for example, did Valentinus teach? Listen—listen to what they took from the Gospel and what they fashioned out of it. They did the same with Judaism. Keep this in mind as well, for it is important. Why? Because this, my dear friends, is precisely what Freemasonry does today. A little of the Gospel. You will hear them say that they keep the Gospel open upon the altar, at the Gospel according to John: “In the beginning was the Word.” Yet when they speak of the Word, they mean something entirely different—entirely different. Then, a little Judaism.
They also use many Jewish names, places, and objects within their degrees of initiation, and so forth. A little of everything, a little of everything. You will hear Freemasons say, “This is my philosophy.” Well, of course, because it also contains a great deal drawn from philosophy. It draws from Hermeticism and Hermes Trismegistus—that is, from the mysteries of antiquity, and so forth. It has the mysteries of Isis, the Orphic mysteries associated with Orpheus, the Eleusinian mysteries, and the Delphic mysteries. It draws from all these things. And since Buddhism is present today, it also draws from Buddhism. Did Buddhism not enter Freemasonry through Theosophy?
I tell you these things so that you may see how interesting they are. Now, what did Valentinus say about Christ? He said that there is a god of good and a god of evil, the god of matter. The good God communicates with the earth through thirty deities. The last of these thirty deities is Jesus Christ. Why did he speak of thirty deities? Because, he said, Christ was thirty years old when He began to preach. You could search forever and still make no sense of it: thirty deities supposedly mediate between the good God and the earth because Christ was thirty years old; and Christ, he says, was born from Silence and the Abyss.
Christ, then, came to deliver us from the evil god of the earth. Fabulous things—literally fabulous things. I have told you this merely as an example, because naturally I do not intend to sit here and examine Gnosticism in detail. It contains a great many such teachings. Anyone who is interested need only read Saint Irenaeus, and there he will find much that is said about the Gnostics. But I would like to dwell, my dear friends, on one Gnostic, perhaps the most important of all. This is Mani. Mani. In Greek, his name follows the third declension: Manes, Manentos; and the religion he founded is called Manichaeism.
The religion of Mani spread throughout the entire known world of that time. It began in Persia and reached India and China; it gained ground in Asia Minor and Byzantium. We find seeds of Manichaeism even within the Byzantine Empire. It extended as far as Egypt, North Africa, Spain, Italy, and throughout Europe. Such was Manichaeism. I will note only that Saint Augustine was once led astray by Manichaeism, so that you may understand how formidable it was. What was Manichaeism?
Fundamentally, it was a dualistic religion. It was indeed a religion, and specifically a dualistic one. Mani was born in the year 216 after Christ. He naturally had a certain background, for he inherited some books from an earlier figure; these books eventually came into his possession, and from them he sought to form a religion. And in order to give it—pay attention here—a universal character, he traveled to India and studied Buddhism. Mani, I repeat, lived in the third century after Christ, while Buddhism began in the sixth century before Christ. He studied Buddhism with the intention of taking
a small piece from every religion and every philosophical system and forming them into a single system, a universal religion. Merely as a historical note, I will tell you that he did not draw from Judaism—or rather, he did draw from Judaism, but he did not accept Moses. He had a reason for this, but I will not go into unnecessary detail. As you understand, the content of his religion was plainly syncretistic. That is, it included Zoroastrianism, Gnosticism, Buddhism, Christianity, and whatever philosophical systems Mani encountered along the way.
His purpose, as I told you, was to unite all religions into one universal religion, claiming that humanity needed to recover a unity of tradition. He believed that this unity of tradition could be found in Adam, Seth, Enosh, Enoch, Nikotheos—I do not know who that is—Noah, Shem, Abraham, the Buddha, Zoroaster, and Jesus, with Mani as the final initiate. Have you seen a book that is in circulation, written in the last century and smelling of mildew, entitled The Great Initiates? My dear friends, you will see all this there. Never read that book. Beware of it!
It mentions Moses and regards Christ as one initiate alongside the Buddha, Zoroaster, and the others, and so forth. Some years ago—not very many, perhaps ten or fifteen years ago—the Theosophists and Freemasons circulated a painting advertised in the magazine Helios, entitled The Mystical Supper. There was even a photograph of it. I do not know its dimensions, but interested people were invited to purchase a color reproduction on paper. The advertisement included a small photograph.
If you looked carefully, you would say, “This is the Mystical Supper.” Yet Christ was in the center, and around Him were the figures I mentioned: Zoroaster, the Buddha, Muhammad, Moses, and so forth. Do you see any resemblance? What Mani taught then, Freemasons teach today. Do you see any resemblance? It is direct. He wanted a universal religion. Today, so-called Ecumenism is attempting to establish that universal religion. Ecumenism is regarded as the greatest heresy ever to have appeared in human history against Christianity—the greatest heresy.
If today we had Fathers of the Church such as Saint Epiphanius of Cyprus or Saint Irenaeus of Lyons, and others like them, they would once again fight with all the strength of their souls against this modern Gnosticism called Ecumenism. What is it? I must tell you that Orthodox Patriarchs, Archbishops, and bishops have been led astray by this Ecumenism. They have been led astray when they speak in favor of Ecumenism and place themselves at its service. What is it? It is the effort to create a religion made up of a small piece from every religion, supposedly so that we will no longer quarrel because of religious fanaticism.
Among the English and other Europeans, this is known as the Branch Theory. The Branch Theory teaches that every religion possesses a little truth, but no religion possesses the whole truth. Therefore, not even Christianity has the whole truth; and among the fragmented and divided forms of Christianity, not even Orthodoxy possesses the truth, but only a small part of it. Therefore, if we unite all religions, we will also unite all their partial truths. This is the Branch Theory, and this is Ecumenism.
Its stages are as follows. The first stage is to unite those that are related: Roman Catholicism, Protestantism, and Orthodoxy. Once these three have been united, the next step will be to unite Christianity with Islam, or Mohammedanism. Let me remind you that twelve or thirteen years ago, around 1972 or 1973, the newspaper Eleftheria of Larissa published a series of articles by a government minister of that period. An effort was being made to draw closer to Islam. Unthinkable things.
Unthinkable things. It is no coincidence, my dear friends—even if some political purpose is involved—that a ceremony was held at the Parnassos Literary Society, as you will all have read, to present the latest edition of the Quran in Greek translation, financed by a Greek shipowner. University professors of theology and Orthodox bishops attended this presentation of the Quran. Unthinkable. These things were published; there is no doubt about them. God preserve us. I am simply denouncing Ecumenism in order to explain its second stage to you. After this comes union with Buddhists and with every other religion. In America, a place of worship was built in this way: there was one building beneath a large roof, and inside that building
there were separate places of worship: a synagogue for the Jews; Protestant, Roman Catholic, and Orthodox churches for the Christians; farther along, a place for Buddhists; then another for Muslims, and so forth—all under the same roof, as a symbol of the universality of these religions. Who serves this plan? The devil; there is no question about it. For, quite simply, what is Christianity? It is the religion of truth, the religion of salvation; it is that which saves. If something does not save, then it is useless. Pay attention: if Christianity does not save, then it is useless. Religion then becomes merely a consolation for the peoples.
Call it the opium of the peoples, a consolation for the peoples, an instrument serving ulterior purposes—call it whatever you wish. All this follows when a religion ceases to save. And if Christianity ceases to save—if it does not save us ontologically, in the sense that this body, though it will become dust, will rise from the grave
through the Resurrection of Jesus Christ—then why should I believe? Why should I be a Christian? Then every religion is futile, even if it expresses humanity’s inclination and yearning to believe. My dear friends, as you understand, Ecumenism does not save. Yet I must tell you that this Ecumenism...
is vigorously supported by Freemasonry. For one day Freemasonry will reveal its face and add itself to the medley that already exists. This is what Freemasonry truly is. This is precisely what an effort is being made to spread throughout the whole world. For this reason, my dear friends, let us take all these things into account and be watchful. Thus, we might say that Manichaeism is an ancestor and forerunner of Theosophy and Freemasonry—or, if you prefer, of modern Ecumenism. That is why it is of such great importance. It does not matter that, in the early age of Saint Cyril, Ecumenism did not yet exist in
in the form it has today; yet it did exist. I told you how Manichaeism spread. And it was a dreadful thing. It taught that if you ate a fig, the fig had life, it had a soul. It was also a form of pantheism. The fig has a soul, it said, and so you commit murder by eating it. Therefore, you must not eat the fig; you must wait for it to die. And how would you wait for it to die? You would wait until it fell from the fig tree, and then go and eat it. You may ask, could people really be led astray by such foolishness? My dear friends, yes. My dear friends, yes. What a dreadful thing! Even Augustine had been led astray by Manichaeism. My dear friends, yes. What is so surprising, what is so strange, when someone loses the Spirit of God? This shows you how precious the Spirit of God is in our lives. If we do not have the Holy Spirit, there is only pitch darkness. Does not Saint Cyril say so here? People worshipped the—
dogs, cats, lions, tigers, even onions. What is so strange about that? What is so strange? All the abundance of human wisdom is nothing when the Holy Spirit is absent. A person becomes truly wise, and acquires true sight and true discernment, when he has the Holy Spirit. Saint Cyril does say a few things here which I have no time left to discuss. Nor will I mention them next time, because we shall move on to the new catechesis, the Seventh. But he does say this: “The Church proclaims and teaches these things, and touches upon the mire so that you may not be defiled by it.” The Church sets these things before us and teaches them. She draws near to the mire, to the filth, so that you yourself may not be defiled. She speaks of the wounds so that you may not be wounded along with them.
“It is enough for you merely to know about these things; keep away from experiencing them yourself.” He speaks of the wounds so that you may not be wounded. It is enough for you to know; only take care not to try them for yourself, not to be led astray and go that far. “Keep company with the sheep; flee from the wolves; do not depart from the Church.” Stay with the sheep, the sheep of Christ, and keep far from the wolves. All these people truly are wolves that prey upon the Church. Do not depart from the Church. Do you know what the tragedy is? The modern Freemason, the modern Gnostic, the follower of Gnosticism, will tell you: “Do not leave the Church. No, stay where you are. In fact, you will see me coming there too and receiving Holy Communion.”
This is the great deception of the devil. In essence, when you take part in mysteries that are foreign to the Church, you have already become estranged from the Church. It is in this sense, then, that we are told, “Do not leave the Church”; do not depart from the Church. My beloved, I could say a great deal more. At this very moment, we have Orthodox bishops and archbishops throughout the world—not only in Greece, but throughout the world—who have unfortunately been infected by the disease of Ecumenism. The newspapers write about it; these are not new things that I am telling you. They are well-known facts. Therefore, let us stand firm. Do you understand the dangers that are assailing the Church?
The Fathers of our Church feared neither persecution nor idolatry. What they feared was syncretism, which they regarded as the Church’s worst enemy. And indeed it is. That is why the blessed Father Justin Popovich, the Serbian priest, theologian, and professor of theology, spoke against Ecumenism with what we might call passion—if I may use that word—following the example of Saint Irenaeus or Saint Epiphanius of Cyprus, and above all Saint Irenaeus. This is no accident. Let us therefore be watchful. What is the best safeguard, the best remedy? Day by day, hour by hour, we must become ever more deeply Orthodox, both in the depths of our being and in the way we live.
Christians.

αναφέρεται στον Θεό. Και συνεχίζει ο Άγιος Κύριλλος, πάντα στην ίδια κατήχησή του, την έκτην, να μας πει ότι όχι μόνο υπήρξε ή υπάρχει το φαινόμενο της ειδωλολατρίας· υπάρχει και ένα άλλο φαινόμενο που λέγεται αίρεσις. Και η αίρεση, με τη σειρά της, έρχεται να διαστρέψει τα πράγματα. Είναι, λοιπόν, δύο οι τομείς που τελικά μπαίνουμε στον χώρο της αθεότητας, δηλαδή της αγνοίας του Θεού: τόσο η ειδωλολατρία όσο και η αίρεση. Διότι, πράγματι, θα το ιδείτε, ο Άγιος Κύριλλος, όπως οι Πατέρες της Εκκλησίας μας, τους αιρετικούς τους αποκαλούν αθέους. Ίσως θα εκπλαγείτε. Πώς μπορεί να λέγεται ο αιρετικός άθεος;
Το A, B, C, D, E, F, G. Το G το αγγλικό.
Αυτό, και πάρα πολλά ονόματα μέσα στους βαθμούς μυήσεως έχουν, ιουδαϊκά ονόματα, ιουδαϊκούς τόπους, ιουδαϊκά αντικείμενα κ.ο.κ. Λίγο απ' όλα, λίγο απ' όλα. Θα ακούσετε τους μασόνους να λέγουν ότι είναι η φιλοσοφία μου αυτή. Ε, βεβαίως, γιατί έχει και πάρα πολύ από τη φιλοσοφία. Έχει από τον Ερμητισμόν, τον Τρισμέγιστον Ερμήν, δηλαδή μυστήρια της αρχαιότητας και ούτω καθεξής. Έχει από την Ίσιδα μυστήρια, έχει από τον Ορφέα τα ορφικά μυστήρια, έχει από τα Ελευσίνια μυστήρια. Έχει από τους Δελφούς τα δελφικά μυστήρια κτλ. Έχει από όλα αυτά. Α, έχει, επειδή έχουμε και τον βουδισμό σήμερα, έχει από τον βουδισμό. Ο βουδισμός δεν μπήκε στον μασονισμό διά της θεοσοφίας;
Η θρησκεία του Μάνητος απλώθηκε σε όλο τον τότε γνωστό κόσμο. Ξεκίνησε από την Περσία μέχρι τις Ινδίες, μέχρι την Κίνα, κατέκτησε την Μικρά Ασία, το Βυζάντιο. Έχουμε σπέρματα του Μανιχαϊσμού και εις αυτήν την Βυζαντινή Αυτοκρατορία, μέχρι την Αίγυπτο, μέχρι τη Βόρεια Αφρική, την Ισπανία, την Ιταλία και σε όλη την Ευρώπη. Ο Μανιχαϊσμός. Θα σημειώσω μόνο ότι ο Άγιος Αυγουστίνος είχε παρασυρθεί από τον Μανιχαϊσμό, για να δείτε πόσο φοβερός ήταν ο Μανιχαϊσμός. Τι ήταν ο Μανιχαϊσμός;
Είναι η μεγάλη απάτη του διαβόλου. Στην ουσία, όταν μετέχεις ξένων, θα λέγαμε, μυστηρίων, είσαι ήδη αποξενωμένος από την Εκκλησία. Με αυτήν την έννοια, λοιπόν, «μην αναχώρει της Εκκλησίας», μην φεύγεις από την Εκκλησία. Αγαπητοί μου, πολύ πολλά θα μπορούσα να πω. Αυτή τη στιγμή έχουμε Ορθοδόξους Επισκόπους και Αρχιεπισκόπους ανά τον κόσμο, όχι στην Ελλάδα μόνο, ανά τον κόσμο, Ορθοδόξους, που δυστυχώς έχουν προσβληθεί από το μικρόβιο του Οικουμενισμού. Τα γράφουν εφημερίδες, δεν είναι πράγματα που σας τα λέω καινούργια. Είναι γνωστά πράγματα αυτά. Γι' αυτό να σταθούμε όρθιοι. Καταλαβαίνετε τι κίνδυνοι πλήττουν την Εκκλησία;
