Summary
Saint Cyril teaches that true knowledge of God begins by confessing human ignorance, because God’s essence remains incomprehensible while His revealed energies and attributes may be known. God is perfect in power, foreknowledge, goodness, justice, love, and every divine activity, joining limitless strength with inexhaustible mercy. The Father created all things through the incarnate Son in the Holy Spirit, and the Christ received in the Eucharist is the eternal Creator, source of every good, and inexhaustible river of blessings.

We are now in paragraph 8 of Saint Cyril’s sixth catechetical lecture.
You will remember that, up to this point, Saint Cyril has spoken to his catechumens about certain attributes of God, or divine uncreated energies, and has said that God remains incomprehensible. The only thing we can comprehend is His incomprehensibility. As he says here word for word, “For in this lies great knowledge concerning God: to confess our ignorance.” In other words, it is great knowledge of God when a person confesses his ignorance concerning God. And, as I told you, Saint Cyril has spoken to us about certain attributes of God, or divine uncreated energies. He continues: “Many have imagined many things.”
“All of them have failed. Some thought that God was fire, while others thought Him to be a winged man, because they misunderstood what had been rightly written: ‘Under the shelter of Your wings You will cover me.’ They forgot our Lord Jesus Christ, the Only-Begotten, who likewise said of Himself to Jerusalem: ‘How often I desired to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were unwilling.’ His protective power was represented by wings; but they failed to understand this, fell into human ways of thinking, and supposed that the Unsearchable One had human form.”
He says that they imagined God. The word “imagined” is exactly right, because this was a product of their imagination. But on what, in truth, did Saint Cyril base everything he has told us so far? I have already told you: on the Apocalypse. If we wished to provide notes for every divine uncreated energy and every attribute of God, we would refer to one or more passages of Holy Scripture. The divine uncreated energies are not inventions; they are not products of human invention. The Word of God reveals the divine uncreated energies. Of course, the precise two words may not always appear, but the meaning is there.
Without question, then, anything someone says beyond what Holy Scripture reveals is imagination. It is rightly called imagination. Saint Cyril is therefore correct in saying that many people imagined many things—and, of course, all of them failed. You know, the question of authority is a serious matter. You may say that something is so, but another person will ask you, “And how do you know?” Here we have the authority and trustworthiness of Holy Scripture. Yet Holy Scripture was written by people who had attained theosis, by Spirit-bearing people, as the Apostle Peter says.
Therefore, those Spirit-bearing people—the Saints who had attained theosis, who received God’s revelations and recorded them—were not mistaken. There is not a single contradiction in Holy Scripture. I will repeat something I have told you before: everything in Holy Scripture forms a chain. Each link is joined to the next, and together they establish the firmness of the truth. Why, then, did some say that God is fire? “Some thought that God was fire.” Others, he says, considered Him winged, as though He had wings.
They imagined Him as a man. Why? Because they interpreted Holy Scripture wrongly. Holy Scripture says that God is “a consuming fire.” So they concluded that God is fire. God has wings. Why? Because Psalm 16:8 says, “You will cover me with Your wings.” You, O God, will cover me with Your wings. Saint Cyril says that these things were rightly written in Holy Scripture, but were wrongly interpreted. He then cites what the Lord Jesus Christ says concerning Jerusalem: “How often I desired to gather you together, to gather your children, as a hen gathers her chicks.”
“Under my wings, but you were unwilling.” What, then, are we to say—that Jesus Christ, as God, is a hen? This is an image. It is very dangerous to take an image and declare it to be an attribute of God—extremely dangerous. In the same way, my beloved, when our ancestors were idolaters, they might say that God is the thunderbolt and call Him Zeus, or say that Zeus holds the thunderbolt—take it however you wish. God is fire, but He is not this perceptible, material fire. God is spiritual fire. And for whom is He fire? He has the power to burn up and punish those who are ungodly.
God is fire in relation to the punishment of the ungodly, and so forth. We cannot therefore say that God is literally fire or that God has wings. You see how great the danger is. Saint Cyril gives yet another example: “They dared to say that He has seven eyes, because it is written: ‘The seven eyes of the Lord look upon all the earth.’ For if He has only seven eyes situated in particular places, then His sight is partial and not complete. To say such a thing of God is blasphemous. For we must believe that God is perfect in all things, according to the words of the Savior: ‘Our heavenly Father is perfect.’” Others said that God...
...has seven eyes. This is indeed written in the Apocalypse, and also in Zechariah the Prophet, 4:10, where it says that the Spirit of God has seven eyes. It was rightly written. But what do the seven eyes mean? They mean that God sees all things. If, however, you take this literally and say that God has seven eyes, then undoubtedly He can see in some directions and not in others. In that case, God would not be perfect. And if He is not perfect, then He is not God. As you understand, this is a wrong interpretation of Holy Scripture, as I said before—and nothing is more dangerous.
The danger lies not only in failing to read Holy Scripture—for, according to John Chrysostom, ignorance of the Scriptures has turned everything upside down—but also in reading Holy Scripture without due care. Another danger is having the pride to say, as the Protestants unfortunately do, that I can comprehend and understand Holy Scripture simply as I myself read it. For what happens among Protestants? Each person becomes an authority, believing that Holy Scripture means whatever each individual understands it to mean. This is a terrible thing. My beloved, the authority of Holy Scripture rests, as we said before, upon people who had attained theosis: the Saints.
Listen carefully: people who had attained theosis wrote Holy Scripture, with the Spirit of God behind them; and people who have attained theosis must interpret Holy Scripture. Therefore, we cannot interpret it in whatever way happens to enter our heads. According to John Chrysostom, this gave birth to the plague and devastation of the heresies. This is why, in this very chapter concerning God, Saint Cyril also speaks about the heresies. Indeed, he writes more about the heresies than he does about God.
So at this point, we must be exceedingly careful.
When you ask me, “What do you mean by being careful? What exactly must we watch out for?” let me explain. We shall use the interpretations of the Fathers of the Church. They are the people who attained theosis and who interpret Holy Scripture, and we shall follow them—that is, we shall follow the Tradition. Interpreting Holy Scripture outside the Tradition leads to death and to delusion. Holy Scripture must be interpreted within the Tradition of the Church, and the Saints are the Tradition of the Church. Allow me, for the sake of study, to speak of the Saints as belonging to two groups. This is not a real division; I make it only for the purposes of our lesson.
Here is the distinction. First are those who wrote interpretations of the Word of God, of Holy Scripture, and confirmed the dogmas and truths of the Gospel. The other group consists of those who lived these truths. Naturally, the first group lived them as well. As I told you, the division is rather foolish, but I make it for the sake of the lesson. Let us put it this way: some lived the Gospel without writing a single line. How, then, did they live? Consider John Chrysostom. I cannot simply call him a prolific writer, because he was really a man who never left the pulpit. Others wrote down his words—shorthand writers and rapid scribes recorded his homilies. He himself continually preached and catechized the people of God.
Thus, we have the theologian and teacher, together with other Fathers of our Church who actually wrote: Athanasius the Great, Saint Gregory the Theologian, Saint Gregory of Nyssa, Basil the Great, Saint Maximus the Confessor, and others like them. They wrote and left us the correct interpretation. They also lived spiritual lives and were holy people. Yet we also have Saints who did not write a single line. The company of Martyrs and Venerable Saints, my beloved, were not authors. Did Saint Anthony write anything? Not a single line. Did Saint Demetrios write anything? Did all the other Saints write anything? Where, then, is their interpretation of Holy Scripture to be found?
It is found in the way they lived the Gospel. Please pay close attention to this: they give us the interpretation of the Gospel through the manner of their lives. They tell us, “This is how you must interpret the Gospel.” Therefore, if we wish to live in an Orthodox manner, if we wish to live rightly, we have only to look to the Saints of the Church, whether or not they were writers. How did they live? Let me bring these two things together: whatever the Saints of the Church, those who attained theosis, both said and lived. Are the Saints useful to us? Of course they are. They give us the measure for the practical interpretation of the Gospel.
And where does this practical interpretation come from? From the dogma of the faith. Dogma is not something dead, nor is it mere scholasticism. Dogma is the compass of life, the compass that directs our way of living. Some say, “What are dogmas anyway? Let us set them aside.” Set the compass aside? If you have no compass aboard your ship, you will never reach the harbor. This, my beloved, is what dogma is; this is what the dogmas and truths are. They are the boundary markers that guide the faithful toward a life that is true, real, authentic, and Orthodox.
Now Saint Cyril once again, I would say, breaks forth into a description of God’s attributes, or divine uncreated energies. They are wonderful, and I repeat that none of them is invented; all are based upon Holy Scripture. Christ said that God—“our heavenly Father”—“is perfect.” This relates to the seven eyes we discussed earlier. Saint Cyril says: “Perfect in seeing, perfect in power, perfect in greatness, perfect in foreknowledge, perfect in goodness, perfect in justice, perfect in love for mankind.”
God is perfect in all His divine uncreated energies. We cannot say that He is complete and perfect in justice but imperfect in love. He is as good as He is just. God’s love does not fall short of God’s justice. Everything in Him is perfect. As I told you last time, God might have said to us, “People, My children, I created you, and I possess certain powers. But My powers are not perfect. I have a great heart and I love you. I see you suffering.”
“I am sorry. I want to help you, but I can do no more.” Could God ever say that, my dear ones? Is God like that? The Psalmist says, “Two things have I heard”: that power belongs to God, and love. He does not use the word “love” but another word—I do not remember it now—yet its meaning is love: the power of God and His loving-kindness, the love of God. “Two things,” he says, “have I heard.” Look carefully here. What is the power of God? It is His might. Power means might. Might belongs to God, and love belongs to Him as well. If God were only power and not love, He would crush us.
If God were only love and not power, He would say to us, “I love you, but I cannot do anything for you.” And this is what the Psalmist says: “I have heard.” From whom did he hear it? From his father? No, my dear ones; this is divinely inspired: power and might belong to God, and love belongs to God. Mercy belongs to God.
He cannot be contained in any place, yet He is the Maker of all places. God is not confined to one place; He has no limits. On the contrary, He is the One who created every place—that is, every point in space, if we may put it that way. Therefore, God is not limited by space, because He is the Creator of space. “Being in all things, yet circumscribed by none”: He exists in everything. A Psalm also says beautifully, “I went upon the earth; I am on the earth, and everywhere I find You. I ascended into heaven.”
“You are present there. I descended into the depths of the sea, and there too You are present. You are everywhere.” You see how all these teachings come from Holy Scripture. He is “in all things,” existing in everything. No one can say, “I am in a place where God cannot hear me or see me.” That is why the Wisdom of Solomon says, “What did you say? What did you say? ‘I shall close my doors, and my room will be dark. The walls protect me. I can sin in the darkness of my room.’” Wretched man, says the Wisdom of Solomon, “The eyes of the Lord are ten thousand times brighter than the sun.”
They are countless times brighter than the sun and see far more than it does. What are you saying—that you have shut your windows and doors, and your walls protect you? This, of course, has a very important practical meaning. Pay close attention to it. Whoever understands it will always be blessed in life. He will never lose heart, and he will have boundless trust in God. What is it? It is this: if God sees my evil deeds and my sins, He also sees my good intentions, my sincere purpose, and my keeping of His commandments. He sees me; He sees that I love Him. Nothing escapes Him. Since nothing escapes Him, why should I be anxious? I will not rush to...
announce in the newspapers that I gave alms, as though that act of charity might somehow be lost unless the whole world learns about it. And what can I say about that strange—very strange and altogether secularized—notion that when the Church gives alms, runs soup kitchens, and carries out charitable works, we must publicize them for everyone to see, so that people will not accuse us? They accuse us because we have not always taken care to appear charitable. And now, hurriedly and out of a sense of insecurity, we rush to publish in the newspapers the good things we do. Of course, you know, there is always an argument offered. What is that argument? That the world must know, so that it will not accuse us. How ridiculous...
What a foolish thing. My dear ones, when someone desires to do good, God sees it. And as the Lord Himself says and assures us, “Your Father, who sees you in secret, will reward you openly.” He says this concerning fasting. Do not rush to proclaim it, because God will make it manifest. How? I have told you before. Will some person, by chance and through divine prompting, put his eye to your keyhole to see how you fast at home, and then go out and tell everyone that you are remarkable because you fast? No. That is foolish and ridiculous. How, then? Quite simply, you will acquire gifts of grace.
You fast, and you will acquire gifts of grace. Gifts of grace cannot remain hidden. Our Church is loving and charitable. Give alms, she says, and the Church will acquire gifts of grace; those gifts cannot remain hidden, but will become visible and known. In other words, the Church will flourish. The Church has no need to publicize everything. She has no need to issue proclamations or anything of the kind. The Church follows her path and acts according to the will of the Lord, as she must, lawfully and rightly. And the Lord blesses His Church, and the Church becomes manifest throughout history. She will be persecuted and slandered, yet she will shine more brightly than the sun. Why? Because she will have the blessing of Christ.
“And circumscribed by none.” God is not circumscribed by anything. Here, “circumscribed” is used in the geometrical sense, as when we speak of a circumscribed figure. We draw a triangle within a circle, or a circle within a triangle, and call it circumscribed—that is, bounded by limits. This is what “circumscribed” means: having boundaries. God, my dear ones, is not circumscribed; He is uncircumscribed, as we also say in the Divine Liturgy. This means that He is without limits. God has no boundaries. We cannot say, “God extends from here to there.” God is beyond all conception and uncircumscribed, incomprehensible and without limits.
“Heaven is His throne, yet He who sits upon it rises far above it.” Holy Scripture says that heaven is His throne. He Himself says, “By what do you swear? By heaven? It is the throne of God. By the earth? The earth is His footstool.” Here I must tell you that Holy Scripture contains many anthropomorphic expressions and many expressions that attribute human characteristics and emotions to God. If we are led astray and imagine that heaven is literally the throne of God, then woe to us. God, my dear ones, does not have heaven as a throne, nor the earth as a footstool beneath His feet. It simply means...
He explains this immediately afterward: “Heaven is His throne, yet He who sits upon it rises far above it; and the earth is His footstool, yet His power reaches even to the regions beneath the earth.” These are expressions—figures of speech. We speak, for example, of how great the distance is from earth to heaven. In ancient times, the earth was regarded as a flat surface, with nothing below or beyond it, while heaven was considered the highest point. We might say that earth was the lowest point and heaven the highest, and that everything between earth and heaven comprised all that existed. But God, he says, rises above it all: He surpasses heaven and surpasses earth. In other words, He transcends our universe. God is outside the universe, my dear ones.
And He is also within the universe. He is outside the universe in His essence. His uncreated essence has nothing whatever in common with created essence. Thus, in His essence, God is outside the universe. Yet God is present everywhere. He contains the universe and is not contained by it. And He contains it without the created essence of the universe becoming mingled with the divine essence. God is present everywhere, at every point of creation, because His presence is everywhere, yet without being joined to material creation—I say it for the third time. If only you knew how valuable these truths are, if only we could always hold fast to them. Yes.
How easy it is to fall into pantheism! Someone may tell you that everything you see is God. Those who spoke in pantheistic terms were not fools; they were learned people, yet they claimed that God is everything you see. They even went so far as to derive the Greek word for “God” from a word meaning “sight,” from seeing. These are delusions. Human wisdom is truly cunning and truly foolish. So let us not say that we ourselves could never fall into pantheism, especially in our own day and age. Moreover, the modern syncretistic forms of pantheism are Freemasonry and Theosophy. We must be careful...
not to become pantheists. I repeat: it is all too easy for a person to become a pantheist—that is, to confine God within creation. God is within His creation and outside His creation. The divine essence has nothing whatever in common with the universe or with created nature—nothing at all. The divine essence is uncreated, while the essence of creation is created. Therefore, we cannot say that creation is God. That is a terrible blasphemy. Paragraph nine: “He is one and present everywhere.” God is one, and He is present everywhere. Everywhere, everywhere, everywhere is God. Do not say, “God will hear me only in church.” Take care: I am speaking of the liturgical service!
I am not speaking of prayer, because at the sacred supper we sit down and partake of the Body and Blood of Christ. You cannot say, “I will remain at home because I am scandalized by the way people dress, or by what I think is their hypocrisy, and so I will not go to the Divine Liturgy.” No. The liturgical and worshipping assembly is irreplaceable. That gathering is unique. Prayer is another matter. The Divine Liturgy is not merely prayer—it includes prayer, of course—but I cannot say, “I will say my prayers at home,” simply because certain things bother me: because the priest is dressed in a certain way, the chanter chants in a certain way, or the deacon behaves in a certain way. No, no, no. These things are irreplaceable. And I go to church in order to eat. To eat what? The Body and Blood of Christ.
So, “He is one and present everywhere.” Wherever you offer your prayer, my brother, God will hear you. I am speaking of your personal prayer, of course. Whether you are in the forest, in your room, in your inner chamber, or even in a cistern, as the Prophet Jeremiah was. The Prophet Jeremiah was in a cistern up to his neck, and he prayed; Daniel was in the lions’ den, and he prayed. God will hear you, because He is present everywhere. “Seeing all things”: He sees everything. There is nothing He does not see. “Understanding all things”: He understands everything. “Creating all things through Christ.” God created all things through Christ. How beautiful this is!
This is my favorite theme in Holy Scripture, my dear ones: that the Son is the Maker of all things. The Maker of all things is the Son and Word (Logos) of God. He whom I see depicted in the icon as Jesus Christ, He whose Body and Blood I receive in the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist—can our nous, our spiritual intellect, grasp this? The One whom we receive in Holy Communion, the One in whom we participate, is the Maker of the whole universe. The Father creates all things through the Son in the Holy Spirit.
The Son, then, is the Maker of all things. A little further on Saint Cyril will tell us most beautifully that the Son became man in order to restore what had been corrupted, because He is the Maker of all things. This comes in the final paragraph of this chapter, of this Catechesis. “All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made,” as the Evangelist John says. For all things were made through Christ. Saint Cyril says “Christ,” rather than “the Word,” to show us that “the Word became flesh.” It truly is Christ—the One whom we seized and nailed to the Cross. This is truly beyond comprehension. He is the source of every good thing, the greatest and inexhaustible source.
God is the source of every good thing, the greatest source, inexhaustible and unfailing. God is a river of blessings, eternal light, light without end. Do these words of Saint Cyril remind you of anything? They recall the troparia of Pentecost, especially those of Vespers—the service we celebrate on the afternoon of Pentecost—those magnificent troparia concerning the Holy Spirit. Whether we speak of the Holy Spirit, the Father, or the Son, these divine attributes are the same, apart from the personal properties. The Father begets and is not begotten; the Son is begotten and does not beget; the Holy Spirit proceeds from...
the Father and is sent by the Son. These are what we call the personal properties. “Shining forth unceasingly, an unconquerable power that condescends to our weaknesses.” His is an unconquerable power. No one can say, “How will God save me?” Nothing is impossible for God. If God lets something happen and does not save you in the way you think He should, He judges that it should be so. That is His judgment. We may ask, “How does God permit a death? How does God permit an accident? Why did He not come to save?” He permitted it. I have told you before that the wills of God are spoken of in two ways: the will of His good pleasure...
There is God’s good and gracious will, and there is His permissive will. What God positively wills is one thing; what He permits is another. “We cannot even bear to hear His name.” Listen: we cannot even hear the name of God. You know that the Jews referred to God by four letters. They wrote His name with four letters, the so-called Tetragrammaton, the four-letter name of God. We do not know how that name was pronounced. Since the Hebrews wrote consonants rather than vowels, leaving the vowels to be understood, we ultimately do not know how the name of God sounded.
We say, for example, that His name is Yahweh, meaning the Lord: Yahweh, the Lord. It is a kind of contraction, like those used in Byzantine writing. We write “Jesus Christ” as “IC XC,” to give you an idea. It is called a contraction: I do not write all the letters.
I write only some of the letters. These are called contractions. In the same way, the Tetragrammaton, the four-letter name of God, was a contraction. And so we do not know how it was pronounced, because the Jews, out of reverence, did not pronounce it. Instead, they used other names, such as Adonai, Elohim, the Most High, Sabaoth, and so forth. That is why it says here, “We cannot even bear to hear His name.” We cannot even hear His name. Yet we know that, strictly speaking, God has no name. God is nameless. It seems we spoke about this last time as well. We give a name to something we have grasped; or, once we have named it, we have in some sense grasped the thing to which we gave the name.
God has no name. That is why there are many expressions for the One who cannot be expressed—in other words, many names. Because God is nameless, He is also called by many names. What are His names? I mentioned them to you last time. Everything we are saying now consists of names of God: God is light, God is love, God is justice. These are names of God; they refer to His divine uncreated energies. You see, there are many names because I cannot say exactly what God is. “Can you discover the trace of the Lord,” Job says, “or reach the limits of what the Almighty has made?” Can you find even a trace of the Lord, as Job says—a single footprint of God?
Have you reached, as Job again says in Job 11:7, the furthest limits of what the Almighty has created? What are these furthest limits? The Psalmist says, “to the uttermost parts of the sea.” Yet even those are not the true limits. My dear friends, there are two extremes within creation. Pay attention to what they are. The first is the outermost edge, if we may put it that way—the boundary, so to speak, of creation.
This is what we call the farthest reaches of the universe, though it is almost impossible even to speak of such reaches. Astronomers describe the universe as finite yet unbounded. So the farthest reach of the universe is one extreme. Do you know what the other is? It is inward, deep within matter, within the atom itself. Descend into the atom of matter. We understand neither the one extreme nor the other. These are the two extremes of creation: the exceedingly small and the exceedingly great. We understand nothing. I say this so that we human beings will not imagine ourselves to be so important. My dear friends, no human eye has ever seen the atom itself.
What we call the electron, the proton, the deuteron, the neutron, and all the other things we name—we have not actually seen them, my dear friends. We have observed only their behavior, and it is their behavior that we photograph, not the things themselves. No human eye has seen the innermost limits of matter. That is why theories exist concerning the structure of matter. If we truly knew these things, we would not construct theories; we would possess a single scientific truth. You see, then, how profound and wise Job’s words are: “Have you reached...”
“Have you reached the furthest limits of what the Almighty has made? Or, if you cannot comprehend the limits of His works, will you comprehend the One who made them all?” If, then, we cannot reach the furthest limits of created things, can we speak of any limits to God? Can we comprehend and grasp God? It is inconceivable. That is why I told you, when the question arose, that a true scientist cannot help but be a philosopher. He will be a believer. Even if he does not hold the Gospel in his hands, he will still be a philosopher, and he will come to say, “How awe-inspiring the universe is!”
He will say, “God is the Creator.” A scientist who claims to be an atheist is therefore foolish; he is no scientist at all, but ignorant of true science. “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor has it entered into the heart of man, the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” If the things God has prepared lie beyond the grasp of our understanding, can we possibly encompass with the nous—the spiritual intellect—the One who prepared them? The Apostle Paul says that, when he was caught up to the third heaven, he saw and heard things that human language cannot express.
Human language cannot express them, nor had they ever entered human desire—“nor has it entered into the heart of man”—because they are uncreated. Pay attention: when we read Holy Scripture, what we read there consists of God’s created words. Notice this carefully: God’s created words. When Christ spoke, He truly spoke. Words came from His mouth. What God the Word (Logos) said, He said as a created man, while of course never ceasing to be God the Word (Logos).
The words He spoke, which people heard with their ears, were created words. But the realities that now exist as the Kingdom of God—the things God has prepared for those who love Him—are uncreated. It is as the Apostle Paul says in the Epistle to the Hebrews: Solomon’s temple was made by hands, but Christ did not enter the Holy of Holies made by hands. He entered the Holy of Holies not made by hands—that is, the uncreated reality, the Kingdom of God.
How can anyone speak, with a created tongue, created words, and created ears, about realities that are uncreated? It is inconceivable—utterly inconceivable. That is why he says: the One who prepared for us uncreated, ineffable, and unspeakable things—how could He Himself fit within the human mind and be comprehended? If the things prepared for us are incomprehensible, how much more incomprehensible is the One who prepared them? And just as the Apostle Paul...
At various points, as you know, the Apostle Paul frequently bursts into doxology. While writing his epistles, he enters the boundless sea of God’s love, God’s glory, and God’s riches; then he breaks off and begins to glorify God, even though his epistle has not ended. Oh! Saint Cyril does the same thing here. He takes the words, of course, from the Apostle Paul: “Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God!” How deep are the riches, wisdom, and knowledge of God? That depth is immeasurable and beyond comprehension. It surpasses even the depths of the universe, which is created. “How unsearchable are His judgments, and...”
“How untraceable His ways!” His ways are His paths—that is, His methods. The ways God acts both in creation and in history cannot be traced. These are God’s ways, His paths, His methods. So says the Apostle. “If His judgments and His ways are beyond comprehension, can He Himself be comprehended?” If God’s methods are incomprehensible, can the One who employs those methods be grasped or understood? Paragraph ten: “Since God is so great, and greater still—for even if my whole hypostasis, my entire person, were changed into a tongue...”
“I could not praise Him worthily. Indeed, even if all the angels assembled together, they too could not speak of Him worthily. Although God is so good and so great, man carves a stone and says to the stone, ‘You are my God.’ Oh, what great blindness, that man should descend from such greatness to such abasement!” God, then, is so great—and greater still, and greater still. Saint Cyril says that if his entire being became a tongue, it still could say nothing adequate about God. If all the angels gathered together and were called to speak worthily of God, even they could say nothing adequate.
Before the majesty of so great and so good a God, man takes a stone and carves it. He takes a chisel and a hammer and makes a carved stone—a statue, an image, a thing, an object—and says to the stone, “You are my God.” Did someone say, “Good heavens”? Yes! “Oh, what great blindness!” he says. What immense blindness! How shall I translate it? Forgive me, but I will put it plainly: sheer, utter blindness. Oh, what great blindness! Such blindness!
God is of such majesty, and man is called to behold and glorify Him—yet man sinks to such poverty. That is why, my dear friends, idolatry is spiritual poverty. We could say that idolatry is the very height of absurdity. Of course, we may admire many things in pagan culture and say many things about it. Yet, speaking according to the Gospel, idolatry is the absolute height of absurdity. Listen to why. What does “the absolute height” mean?
It means that nothing can go beyond it; nothing can be greater. Therefore, to call it the absolute height of absurdity means that, among all the absurd things in the world, idolatry is the most absurd of all. Shall I go even further? Actually, it is not idolatry, but atheism. An idolater at least believes in something. He suffers from blindness, from utter blindness, because he sees creation, marvels at it, and makes it into a god. The atheist sinks even lower than the idolater. Therefore, idolatry is not the greatest height of irrationality...
Rather, atheism is the height of madness and absurdity. Why? Listen. I am one meter seventy-five tall, and I am walking down the street. I weigh so many kilograms and have such-and-such a height and physical dimensions—this person you see walking down the street. An ant sees me. It rises on its front legs, lifts up its neck, and says to me, “Stop right there! Move aside! Do you know who I am? Do not talk back to me, or you will be sorry.” What would I do before that ant?
I would say to the ant, “You ridiculous little thing, you ridiculous creature”—forgive me for speaking this way; I am making the example vivid—“you ridiculous creature, you lift up your neck and tell me to move aside? Who are you, little ant?” After all, I am one meter seventy-five tall. Compared with the ant, my dear friends, let us say I am a hundred thousand times larger. How much does it weigh, and how much do I weigh? Let us say that I am a hundred thousand times larger than the ant. But when man is compared with God, how much smaller is he? And yet man stiffens his neck, raises his head toward heaven, and says, “There is no God.” It is absurd.
The very height of absurdity. So whenever anyone sees an atheist, there is nothing to say but, “The poor man is ridiculous.” Truly ridiculous. There is a story that three young men once went to tease a priest. They entered his house and said to him, “Father, you know, we are atheists.” The priest did nothing else; he simply stood up and began examining them, looking them over and feeling them all around. They were puzzled. “Why is he feeling us like this?” So they said to him, “What is it? What is the matter? Why are you feeling us?” He replied, “I want to see what sort of ridiculous creatures these are who say that God does not exist.” Indeed.
What absurdity! Why have I dwelt so much on this point? Because, my beloved, there must be many ridiculous people around us today—all those who say they do not believe that God exists. But you see, in the time of Saint Cyril there were no atheists. Atheists in antiquity were exceedingly few. The first to teach atheism in Greece, in the Greek lands, as you know—and if I understand correctly—were the Sophists. They were the first to teach atheism. That is why Socrates did not want young people to go and listen to the Sophists. So there were no atheists. There were simply people in the time of Saint Cyril—
heretics, or whatever else you may call them, but not atheists. That is why the phenomenon of atheism in our own age is the final extreme. So here Saint Cyril is speaking about idolatry, and we shall remain with that subject. What he is about to tell us is useful, because, my beloved, what the Evangelist John writes to Christians was not written in vain. It is a unique expression in Holy Scripture, unique, we might say, in the precision of its wording: “Little children”—this is how he ends his first epistle—“little children, keep yourselves from idols.” It is no accident that this is written in the Word of God, in Holy Scripture. It is relevant at all times, my beloved, and even today we have idolaters.
I may be an idolater not only in the sense that I am immoral and so, through my actions, worship Aphrodite; or that I am a drunkard and so, through my actions, worship Bacchus—but also in theory. In our age, especially here in Greece and also in the West, there is now a theoretical embrace of idolatry. It is dreadful. There is this nostalgia for idolatry. What a strange thing! It is that Beast of which the Apocalypse says that it was and is not,
and yet it is. And it goes to destruction. It is…
“It was, and is not, and shall appear.” Remember this. Idolatry once was. Now it is not, because the Gospel is here; but idolatry will return again—it shall be. Yet then the very end will be very near; everything will have reached its final end. “And it goes to destruction.” It is now going to perdition. And the peoples, it says, will marvel. Listen, listen—I remind you of what the Apocalypse says. The nations will marvel that, although it did not exist, now it exists. That is, they will marvel that idolatry had disappeared and has now returned. This too is a sign that we are in the last times. Remember it. These things, then, are not theoretical, so that we might say, “Oh, they were written long ago.” No, they are extremely relevant today. “The wood which God planted,
which the rain caused to grow, and which was afterward burned and reduced to a boundless heap of ashes—this is proclaimed as God, while the true God is despised.” The wood, the tree planted by God, was made tall and caused to grow by the rain. Then we burn it and turn it to ashes. This is what man proclaims and declares to be God, while God, the true God, is ignored. What absurdity! But I shall continue, my beloved, next Monday, God willing.

Έχουμε λοιπόν τον θεωρητικό. Ή άλλους Πατέρες της Εκκλησίας μας που πράγματι έγραψαν. Μέγας Αθανάσιος, ο Άγιος Γρηγόριος ο Θεολόγος, ο Άγιος Γρηγόριος Νύσσης, ο Μέγας Βασίλειος, ο Άγιος Μάξιμος ο Ομολογητής και οι τοιούτοι. Αυτοί έγραψαν, μας άφησαν την ορθή ερμηνεία και ζούσαν πνευματικά, ήσαν Άγιοι άνθρωποι. Έχουμε όμως και ανθρώπους Αγίους που δεν έγραψαν ούτε μια γραμμή. Η χορεία των Μαρτύρων, αγαπητοί μου, και των Οσίων δεν είναι συγγραφείς. Ο Άγιος Αντώνιος έγραψε τίποτε; Ούτε μια γραμμή. Ο Άγιος Δημήτριος έγραψε τίποτε; Κι όλοι οι άλλοι Άγιοι έγραψαν τίποτε; Αλλά πού είναι τώρα η ερμηνεία που κάνουν στις Αγίες Γραφές;
Ο Θεός δεν έχει όνομα. Γι’ αυτό και υπάρχουν πολλές εκφράσεις να εκφράσουν το ανέκφραστο, δηλαδή πολλά ονόματα. Γι’ αυτό ο Θεός, επειδή είναι ανώνυμος, γι’ αυτό είναι και πολυώνυμος, έχει δηλαδή πολλά ονόματα. Ποια είναι τα ονόματά Του; Σας τα έλεγα την περασμένη φορά. Όλα αυτά που λέμε τώρα είναι τα ονόματα του Θεού. Ο Θεός είναι φως, ο Θεός είναι αγάπη, ο Θεός είναι δικαιοσύνη. Είναι ονόματα του Θεού, ενέργειες του Θεού. Βλέπετε, πολλά ονόματα, γιατί δεν μπορώ να πω τι ακριβώς είναι ο Θεός. «Ή ίχνος Κυρίου ευρήσεις», φησίν ο Ιώβ, «ή εις τα έσχατα αφίκου, α εποίησεν ο Παντοκράτωρ;». Μήπως μπορείς να βρεις ίχνος Κυρίου, όπως λέγει ο Ιώβ, ένα χνάρι του Θεού;
Τόσο μέγεθος που είναι ο Θεός και που ο άνθρωπος καλείται να τον δει και να τον δοξάσει, σε τέτοια φτώχεια. Γι' αυτό, αγαπητοί μου, η ειδωλολατρία είναι φτώχεια. Θα μπορούσαμε να πούμε ότι η ειδωλολατρία είναι το άκρον άωτον της γελοιότητας. Βέβαια, ίσως θαυμάζουμε πολλά πράγματα στην ειδωλολατρία, ίσως πολλά λέμε. Είναι το άκρον, ευαγγελικά μιλώ, το άκρον άωτον της γελοιότητας. Ακούστε γιατί. Τι θα πει άκρον άωτον;
Τρέλας θα λέγαμε και της γελοιότητος. Αλλά είναι η αθεΐα. Γιατί; Ακούσατέ το. Εγώ είμαι ένα και εβδομήντα πέντε και περπατάω στον δρόμο. Ζυγίζω τόσα κιλά κι είμαι τόσο ύψος. Έχω τόσες διαστάσεις, αυτός που είμαι και περπατάω στον δρόμο. Με βλέπει ένα μυρμήγκι. Στέκεται στα μπροστινά του πόδια έτσι, σηκώνει τον τράχηλο και μου λέει: «Για στάσου, κάτσε στην μπάντα. Ξέρεις ποιος είμαι εγώ; Μη μου μιλάς πολύ, γιατί αλλοίμονό σου». Τι θα έκανα εγώ μπροστά στο μυρμήγκι;
