Summary

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem teaches that confessing the limits of human knowledge is itself a profound form of knowledge about God. Angels perceive God only according to their capacity, while the Son and the Holy Spirit know the Father fully because the three divine Persons share one essence. Every true description of God comes through scriptural revelation rather than philosophical invention, and the common uncreated energies of the Trinity unite the uncreated God with creation.

Beloved, we are now in paragraph 5 of Saint Cyril’s Sixth Catechesis. Saint Cyril’s whole subject is God: “I believe in one God.” This is precisely his concern, and in this catechesis he will tell his catechumens—or, more accurately, those preparing for illumination—as much as can be said to them. “But someone will say: His essence is incomprehensible.”

“Why, then, do you speak about these things? Because I cannot drink the whole river dry, should I not take as much as is beneficial to me? Because my eyes cannot contain the whole sun, should I not look upon enough of its light for my own needs? Or because I have entered a vast garden and cannot eat all the fruit from all its trees, would you have me leave completely hungry? I praise and glorify Him who fashioned us, for the Lord has commanded: ‘Let everything that breathes praise the Lord.’” He glorifies the Master.

“Yet I do not attempt to explain Him. I know that I shall fall short of glorifying Him worthily, but I consider it an act of reverence even to make the attempt. For the Lord Jesus comforts me in my weakness when He says, ‘No one has ever seen God.’” Saint Cyril uses a very beautiful figure here, with three examples. But someone may say: “If God is incomprehensible, Saint Cyril, did you not tell us last time, in your second paragraph, ‘In matters concerning God, it is great knowledge to confess our ignorance’?”

We examined that at length. Remember: great knowledge concerning God consists in confessing that you know nothing. Since, then, God is incomprehensible—and specifically, as the text says, “His hypostasis”—let me make a brief aside. Among the Fathers of our Church in the early centuries, especially before the First Ecumenical Council and for a short time afterward, the terms “essence” and “hypostasis” were sometimes used interchangeably. These words were written in AD 350, while the First Ecumenical Council took place in AD 325, so this was shortly after that Council. Sometimes, when a writer used the word “hypostasis,” he meant essence; at other times he meant person. Later theologians, in the centuries that followed, established the terminology more precisely. Today, when we say “hypostasis,” we mean person. We speak of “the enhypostatic Wisdom of God” and “the enhypostatic Word of God,” meaning that He is personal. And “essence” means precisely essence. I make this clarification because here, when Saint Cyril says “hypostasis,” he means essence.

Someone, then, will say to me: “If the essence of God is incomprehensible, why are you sitting there telling us all these things? Why do you speak about them? Why do you go on describing and explaining them to us?” And Saint Cyril replies:

“Suppose I cannot drink the whole river. Can I not drink a little—as much as I need? Suppose my eyes cannot take in the sun itself. Is not the sunlight that reaches the earth and illumines us enough for me to see to my daily tasks?”

Or suppose I enter a paradise—that is, a garden—and cannot eat every piece of fruit from all its trees. Can I not eat some of it, so that I do not leave the garden hungry? This means that the essence of God may indeed remain incomprehensible, but that does not mean I cannot know certain things about God. For if I know nothing of God, how shall I believe in Him, how shall I love Him, and how shall I correct my life according to His commandments? And how shall I keep from falling into blasphemy whenever I speak about God? My right faith concerning God will itself be an act of glorification. Is that not enough for me? I remain within what is sufficient for me.

In other words, from the great river of unknowing concerning God, I take one glass, drink it, and quench my thirst. That is enough for me. As you have seen, Saint Cyril’s examples are beautiful. This is why he says, “I glorify my Lord,” and, “Let everything that breathes”—that is, every living thing that draws breath—“praise the Lord.” Saint Cyril says: I shall not attempt to explain this or that, but only those things I am able to express. Besides, this saying of the Lord Jesus comforts me in my weakness, in my inability to know: “No one has ever seen God.” No one has ever seen God—

that is, the essence of God. Do you understand what “essence” means? Let me offer an explanation, although Saint Cyril himself will address something like this. At this moment, beloved, I see you and you see me. Yet, in truth, your essence escapes me, even though we are consubstantial—all human beings share one human essence, as we know. I do not know what you ultimately are. And my essence, which is also yours, escapes you. Of course, I do not know the human essence, because we do not even know the essence of matter. This is well known. It is the great controversy: What is matter? And if we answer, “It is energy,” then what is energy?

If we say, “Energy is matter,” then what is matter? We must reach the ultimate depths of reality—notice that phrase—the ultimate depths of reality, of being itself, before we can say what a thing truly is. Human beings may never reach that point, at least in relation to... At least! How much more is this true of uncreated reality. As for created reality, I do not know whether humanity will ever reach it. I told you last time that it never will. The human intellect is limited; it has boundaries, even though matter exists within space and time. If, then, I cannot know your essence or my own—for I am material, meaning my body—and cannot know my bodily essence, which, as we said, would require ultimate knowledge,

it is enough for me that I see you and you see me. Forgive me for using a daring example. Before marrying a woman, did you first have to know her essence in order to marry her? What use would that have been to you? Is it not enough that you see her and know her? Does not knowing her essence prevent you from loving her? Not at all. In the same way, my inability to know God’s essence does not prevent me from knowing and loving Him. This, essentially, is what Saint Cyril means: the fact that God is incomprehensible does not mean that I cannot know God. I shall know—

what I need to know, because that is what God reveals to me—not, I repeat, from His essence, but through His divine uncreated energies. “What, then, will someone say about the words of Scripture, that the angels of the little ones always behold the face of My Father who is in heaven? The angels do indeed behold Him, not as God is in Himself, but only insofar as they have the capacity. For Jesus Himself says, ‘Not that anyone has seen the Father, except He who is from God; He has seen the Father.’ The angels behold as much as they can contain, and the archangels as much as they are able; the thrones and dominions behold more than the former, yet still less than would be worthy of Him.”

“Only the Holy Spirit, together with the Son, can behold the Father as He ought to be beheld; for the Spirit searches all things and knows even the depths of God, just as the Only-Begotten knows the Father together with the Holy Spirit.” Someone will say: “Is it not written above—did Christ not say—‘Do not cause one of these little ones to stumble, for their angels always behold the face of My Father who is in heaven’?” Saint Cyril now replies: “Yes, the angels behold Him, not as God is in Himself, but according to their capacity”—as much as they are able.

As much as they can. But what exactly do they behold? Did you notice what the text says? “The face.” Christ said, “the face of My Father.” The person of God is one thing, and the essence of God is another. God’s essence is one, while the Persons are three; I say this to show you that these are distinct. This is God: one essence, three Persons. That is why God is one. There are not three gods, because the essence is one. And the Lord said, “They behold the face of My Father.” But how can human beings behold the face of God? And what does “face” or “person” mean here? Human beings—that is, we who belong to visible, created reality—could never behold God unless He placed, so to speak, one face before another. What I have just said is not exact, and I shall correct it shortly. I have said, “unless He placed one face before another,” only to help you understand. Again, it is not exact. What I mean is: unless God assumed a human face. And the human face is, first of all, what we ordinarily call the face. This is the original meaning of the noun: the eyes, nose, mouth, and everything at the front of the head. That is what I call the face. The Greek word prosopon comes from pros and ops, “toward the gaze.” Let us not analyze it further.

But take care: the person is more than the eyes, nose, and mouth. It is inward; it is what we call personality. We therefore distinguish between the face and the personality. Yet we do not go wrong if, for a moment, we call the personality the person. We are not mistaken in doing so. In order to show us His Person, God became man. Of course, we say that Jesus Christ is one Person. I am now correcting my earlier expression: there are not two persons, nor did one person place Himself in front of another person.

This is why we say that Jesus Christ is one Person, but has two natures, divine and human. The two natures are united hypostatically—that is, they are personally united: the divine nature and the human nature. He is therefore one Person. I have now corrected what I said. I used that figure of speech to help you understand that something had to stand before the divine Person, and that something was His human constitution. To speak more precisely now: His human constitution. When Philip said, “Show us the Father,” the Lord answered, “Have I been with you so long, and still you have not seen Me, Philip? Have you not seen the Father? He who has seen Me has seen the Father.”

Therefore, through the Person of Jesus Christ—and once again I shall make a distinction that is not strictly exact—through His created face, meaning what we call His eyes and nose, one may say... Yet these are not His person or personality. They are simply what, if you will permit the expression, we call His outward face—His visible countenance.

Through that visible countenance, one beholds the Son, and through the Son, the Father. But the Person of the Son is one. I repeat this once more, lest anyone suspect me of holding heretical opinions—God forbid. The Person of the Son is one: the divine-human Person of the God-Man. We do not have two persons, for that would be heretical. If we accepted two persons, it would mean that Jesus—the Word of God—entered into a man. He did not enter into a man; He became man. Therefore, He does not have two persons. Thus, when we say, “The angels behold the face of God,” God knows how they behold His face. Or, to be more precise, do you know where the angels beheld the face of God? In the Person of Jesus Christ. This is why Jesus Christ is the central Person of the whole visible and invisible creation. Do you know that through the Incarnation of Jesus Christ the angels are sanctified and made steadfast in their holiness?

In the Person of Jesus Christ, through the Incarnation of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, they beheld God for the first time, and they were amazed. This is a great thing. It is the profound Mystery of which the Apostle Paul says, “He revealed it to me”—and, of course, to the other Apostles as well. “God revealed it to me so that I might proclaim it to the nations.” He calls this Mystery “kept silent for long ages,” hidden from both human beings and angels. This is why the angels hymn Jesus Christ at His Nativity: they beheld the face of God and were thereafter made steadfast, no longer inclining toward a fall. Angels can fall, because they are changeable, not unchangeable. Yet they do not fall, because they do not will to do so.

Their refusal to fall is therefore so firm that it is equivalent, in effect, to the angels being unchangeable. They are not unchangeable, I repeat, but the result is as though they were. When did this happen? When they beheld the face of God in the Person of Jesus Christ. It is astonishing. Beloved, if only we knew who Jesus Christ is! He whom we have thrown out of our homes and our homeland; He whom people revile from evening until morning, heaping blasphemy upon blasphemy against Him. Oh, if only they knew who Christ is! And if only we knew the riches of His goodness and forbearance—how He endures us! Yet when we hear that other people have said the slightest thing about us, we turn into beasts.

Others told us to do it.

He receives whatever we heap upon Him, and yet He still does not revile us. It is a fearful thing, truly fearful. Whoever enters deeply into the mystery of the person of Jesus Christ is overcome with awe. Who is Christ? That is why such a person speaks of Jesus Christ with reverence. He cannot bear to hear anything malicious or blasphemous directed against the person of Jesus Christ. Let us take heed of this, my beloved. It is unthinkable that anyone who hears the word of God should imagine that he may also blaspheme. Even if he tells me that it happens through weakness, no—these things must go. I would only say: Do not lose heart. Let us not become discouraged. If it has become a habit, we must struggle against it. Our mouths are not clean.

You offer up blessing to Jesus Christ. Thus the catechesis says that the angels also see according to their capacity, as much as they are able, since the angels have their different ranks. The Annunciation, the Resurrection, the Ascension, the Apocalypse. They may have an ever deeper knowledge of the person of God—not of His essence, but of the person of God. Saint Cyril now states it concisely: “Only the Holy Spirit, together with the Son, can behold as one ought.”

The Holy Spirit, together with the Son, beholds the Father. “For the Spirit searches all things and knows even the depths of God.” Holy Scripture already tells us this in 1 Corinthians 2:10: the Holy Spirit searches the depths of God. What are the depths of God? They are the essence of God. These are known only to the Holy Spirit and the Son. Why are they known to Them? Because the Son and the Holy Spirit are consubstantial with the Father. They are of one essence.

“No one knows the Father except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him.” The Lord Himself says this in Matthew 11:27: no one knows the Father except the Son, and the one to whom the Son chooses to reveal the Father. Only the Son’s knowledge reaches the depths of God, the essence of God. What the Son reveals to a human being certainly does not concern the divine essence, for that would contradict what the word of God says elsewhere: “No one has ever seen God.” Rather, He reveals God’s properties and His divine uncreated energies. When I speak of properties and divine uncreated energies, I mean the same thing.

They are different expressions for one and the same reality. “For He beholds as He ought and reveals through the Spirit according to each person’s capacity, since the Holy Spirit and the Only-Begotten Son share in the divinity of the Father. The One begotten without passion before all ages eternally beheld the One who begot Him, and the One who begot beheld the One begotten, while the angels knew nothing of this. Through the Holy Spirit, the Only-Begotten...” As... Forgive me, forgive me. “Since the angels knew nothing of this, let no human being be ashamed to confess his ignorance.” Only the three Persons know one another, because They share one essence. The angels do not know this, nor do human beings. Therefore, no one should begin to feel ashamed

to say, “I do not know what God is,” because it is impossible to know what God is. Saint Cyril gives an example: “I speak, as everyone does from time to time, but we cannot explain how we speak. How, then, can we describe the One who gave us the power of speech? I have a soul, yet I cannot describe its characteristics; how, then, shall I extol the Giver of the soul?” We have heard these two beautiful examples from Saint Cyril. They are very striking. I am a human being, he says, and I speak. I speak from time to time. But I cannot explain to you the process by which thought and speech arise.

To put it in simpler language: how does my mind work, and how does what takes place in my mind reach my tongue and become speech? Try to discover how that happens. Do you realize that this is a mystery? How does what I think become speech? What is the process? Can I investigate the process of thought and of articulate, spoken language? If I cannot discover this, he says, how can I describe—that is, explain—the One who gave me the ability to speak? I cannot even explain my own inner process, how I think and how I speak.

Can I therefore explain what the One is who created this process and set it in motion—thought and speech? The second example is this: I, a human being, have a soul, and the soul has certain characteristics, certain properties, yet I am “unable to describe them.” Who, I ask you, can speak about the soul and say, “This is what the soul is”? Would you like me to show you how little we know about the soul? Listen. Who might be considered qualified to study the soul? Let us say psychologists and psychiatrists. You know that there is a distinction between a psychologist and a psychiatrist. A psychiatrist is actually a physician and uses medication, whereas a psychologist

is not a physician and does not use medication. Am I stating that correctly? That is the distinction between a psychiatrist and a psychologist. Now pay attention. Let us take these two professions, whose subject is supposedly the soul. What can they do with it? Can they tell us what the soul is? No, my beloved. They can describe certain movements of the soul, yes, though their descriptions are often contradictory. But why should I go through every argument instead of proceeding directly to the final one? Psychiatrists and psychologists have divided into two camps: those who say that the soul exists and those who say that it does not. If, then, we were to establish a psychology without a soul...

You understand how little we know about the soul, when people in these sciences can maintain opposing positions, some saying that the soul exists and others that it does not. This shows that we do not know what the soul is. Saint Cyril therefore says: If I do not know even my own soul, how can I speak about the One who gave me the soul? We may know certain things, but only what is sufficient for someone to say that he possesses knowledge of God. For if you recall, the Apostle Paul rebukes the Corinthians in the fifteenth chapter of 1 Corinthians.

They denied the resurrection of the dead because they did not know the power of God. They thought it impossible for a person who becomes dust in the grave to receive flesh and bones once again and return to life. Impossible! And the Apostle Paul says that they do not know the power of God: “Some have no knowledge of God. I say this to your shame.” Some of you have no knowledge of God, and I say this to your shame. This means, my beloved, that we must not remain ignorant of God. Whatever the Word of God reveals, we must know, so that we may not come under the Apostle Paul’s rebuke.

I had been put to use. Here you will hear a torrent of descriptions of the divinity. Perhaps you will ask: Have all the things Saint Cyril mentions here—which, of course, form the foundation of the dogmatic teaching of our Church—already been formulated? I shall continue.

Thank you. Does he truly know the things he is saying, or have other Fathers formulated and taught them? Pay attention to this point. Are they products of human invention? What does that mean? Are we perhaps trying, through philosophy, to devise certain descriptions of God’s properties? I tell you plainly: not one description of the divinity is the product of human invention. Every description comes through revelation, as God reveals Himself to us in Holy Scripture. It is another matter that we may sometimes express a lengthy description of a divine uncreated energy in a single word. But none of God’s divine uncreated energies or properties is the product of philosophical speculation, something devised by our own minds. They all come through revelation.

We ought to pause and provide commentary on everything you are about to hear. We could say: This is found in these passages of Holy Scripture, in the New Testament and the Old Testament; that is found in those passages; and the other in still others. Thus, everything comes through revelation, as God reveals Himself in Holy Scripture. Second, none of what you are about to hear describes anything of God’s essence. All these things concern God’s divine uncreated energies, or, as we may also call them, His properties. But “divine uncreated energies” is the preferable expression. Moreover, these divine uncreated energies of God are uncreated and are distinct from His essence.

In other words, God’s divine uncreated energies are uncreated, but they are not the essence of God. Third, these divine uncreated energies stand between—and remember this—the uncreated essence of God and the created world. God creates the created world—the angels, human beings, and the entire universe—through His divine uncreated energies. The three Persons of the Holy Trinity act through Their divine uncreated energies. God’s divine uncreated energies are common to all three Persons because Their essence is common. The divine uncreated energies are common. The Son does not have one set of divine uncreated energies and the Father another. They are common.

A beautiful image of the Holy Trinity, taken from a centuries-old fresco, was published in a calendar by the National Bank of Greece. It depicts three angels. They are identical in appearance, completely alike, and all three are blessing. They are not seated at a table, as in the Hospitality of Abraham. All three are blessing something below them. I do not know what it is; that part of the fresco cannot be seen in the photograph. All three angels make the same movement with their right hands, in the same direction, with the same gesture and the same form. What does this mean? It is a visual expression of the common divine uncreated energies of the three Persons.

Now, after these clarifications, I return to Saint Cyril. I ask only this: those who may be here for the first time should not become discouraged and think that we are discussing matters that are far too difficult. If we pay a little attention, they are not difficult; and once we become familiar with them, you will see that they are not difficult at all.

We hear these things repeatedly; we need only the patient endurance to keep listening. You will see that, with time, they will become more familiar. But bear in mind that Christians attending Church in ancient times knew these matters very well. When the Fathers of our Church wrote and taught these things, those listening in the Church understood them. It was not because they were more educated. We are more educated today, but we do not listen to the word of God and do not become familiar with it. And remember that Saint Cyril says the things you are about to hear to catechumens, to those preparing for illumination in Baptism.

Therefore, I earnestly ask you not to say that these things are difficult. Paragraph seven: “And now, for piety, let this alone suffice: to know that we have a God.” For us to live in piety, it is enough to know that we have a God. God. This is fundamental and essential. What does atheism mean? As we asked earlier, what does atheism mean? It means refusing to accept that you have a God. The fundamental and essential truth, then, is this: I have a God. I am not an atheist; God dwells within me. I have a God; God exists. This is the foundation, the essential truth. That is enough for us.

We are to live in godliness, because godliness is directed not toward men, but toward God. We know that we have a God—one God, one God. Notice that here Saint Cyril will speak about God in His essence. He will not yet refer to Jesus Christ, because, as he expounds the Creed, he will speak later about Jesus Christ in other catechetical lectures: “And in one Lord Jesus Christ,” and “in the Holy Spirit.” The catechist will explain these things further on. Here, then, he is speaking about God in general. “One God, God who exists and always exists.” God exists eternally. There are no intervals in His existence.

A storm comes and goes; even sunlight comes and goes. We say, “Now it is night. We do not have the light of the sun; the sun is absent for a time.” But God is eternal, always existing. “Always remaining like Himself.” He is always the same as Himself. What does that mean? He is without variation. He is always the same as Himself and never changes. Am I always the same as myself?

Look at a photograph of me when I was a child. God is not subject to such measurable change. Back then I had neither white hair and a white beard, nor baldness, nor the other signs of old age. What does this mean? I am not always the same as myself. God, however, is always the same as Himself. In other words, God is immutable. As Saint James says, in God there is “no variation or shadow of turning.” There is no change in the Godhead. This is very important. “He is not a father who has another as His begetter.” God has no father. Some people ask, “Who made God?”

Does God have a father? The answer is very simple. What they are saying is also philosophically unsound. If God had a father, then His Father would of course be God, and we could not speak only of the one who begot Him; we would also have to speak of the father of the one who begot Him. My dear friends, God has neither a maker—much less some greater maker—nor a begetter. God does not derive His existence from anywhere else. Here you reach the limits of your reason. If I did not exist, you would still exist. If we human beings did not exist, the earth would still exist. If the earth did not exist, the universe would still exist. And if the entire universe were taken away...

God would still exist. But if God did not exist—what a terrifying thought! There would not merely be zero, but absolute nothingness: not some empty place within creation, but nothing at all. The mind cannot grasp this absolute nothingness—absolute nothingness. God has fashioned the human nous, the spiritual intellect, in such a way that it can never comprehend how God exists, how God is eternally existing and always is. It is incomprehensible and inconceivable. “No one is mightier.” Nothing is mightier than God. “No successor casts Him out of His Kingdom.” No one can succeed God

and cast Him out of His dominion. Why did Saint Cyril include this? Perhaps he had in mind the story of Zeus dethroning Cronus in order to reign in his place. Possibly. The point is that God has no successor. He has neither predecessors nor successors—neither a father nor anyone who will succeed Him. “He who has many names, who is almighty, and whose hypostasis is of one form.” He has many names. Why does He have many names? Because in Himself He is nameless. As I told you last time, when we give something a name, that name certainly expresses its properties and, more particularly, expresses something...

that we are capable of knowing. Let us say—though this is not strictly correct—that it expresses the essence of the thing. That is not quite right, and I say so again. But I put it this way simply so that you may understand. I have grasped it, weighed it, measured it, and mastered it. But when I have no name for something, it means that I have not mastered it. How, then, can I describe what has no name? By using many names. And why do I use many names? Because I cannot find the one name that can express the inexpressible. Therefore, God has many names because in Himself He is nameless. He is almighty—not merely mighty, but almighty. Nothing is impossible for God, and His hypostasis is of one form. Once again, let us examine the word “hypostasis,” which here means essence, as I have told you.

What does it mean that His hypostasis is of one form? It means that His essence is simple. And what does “simple” mean? It means that it is not composite. It is well known that whatever is composite can also be dissolved. This, after all, was Plato’s argument as well. The philosophers’ arguments about God are shadowy. If someone studies philosophy, I do not know whether it is worthwhile—whether it is really worthwhile—to waste his time on it instead of sitting down to study theology. As I told you, this was the argument of the idealist philosophers: the soul is simple, and God is simple. What does that mean? They are not composite. Since the soul is simple and not composite, it cannot die.

The body dies because it is composed of many elements. When those elements are dissolved, that is death. But if the soul cannot be dissolved because it is simple, then it is immortal. In this way Plato and the related philosophical tradition sought to prove the immortality of the soul. Here Saint Cyril says that God’s essence is of one form—that is, simple. “For although He is beautiful, good, righteous, almighty, and Lord of Sabaoth, He is not therefore diverse or different.” When we ascribe various properties or divine uncreated energies to God—when we say that He is good, righteous, almighty, and so on—do all these things constitute separate elements that divide God?

Do all these properties and descriptions mean that God is divided or differentiated? No. The one God, simple in essence, is righteous, good, almighty, and so forth. “But being one and the same, He sends forth myriads of the divine uncreated energies of the Godhead.” Do you see how beautiful this expression is? “He sends forth myriads of the divine uncreated energies of the Godhead.” I told you that love is a divine uncreated energy; I told you that faith is a divine uncreated energy.

What does “divine uncreated energy” mean? Love comes from God. I can never love God unless I first receive this divine uncreated energy—never. The divine uncreated energy of God called love comes upon me; I come into harmony with it, if I may use that expression, and then I either respond or fail to respond. What determines whether I respond? My free disposition and the condition of my heart. But I can never love God unless God sends forth the divine uncreated energy of His love. My dear friends, do not imagine that these divine uncreated energies are merely abstract theology of no concern to us. They concern us directly.

They concern you personally. “He neither excels in one part nor falls short in another.” In no aspect of the Godhead is there excess, and in no other aspect is there deficiency. It is not as though righteousness abounds while love is lacking. No. “But in all things He remains like Himself.” In everything He is the same as Himself; He has no parts in which there is excess or deficiency. “He is not great in loving-kindness alone and small in wisdom.” We cannot say that God is great in loving-kindness but small in wisdom.

His wisdom and His loving-kindness are equal in their fullness. “Nor does He see in one part while in another part He is deprived of sight; rather, He is wholly eye, wholly hearing, and wholly nous.” He is not one who sees here but not there, or hears here but not there. Saint Cyril says that He is wholly eye, wholly hearing, and wholly nous, the spiritual intellect. Pay attention.

Imagine if God were to say to us: “Human beings, I created you. I am good, and I made you, My children, with power, for I am powerful. But I must reveal to you that I am not almighty. My loving-kindness toward you is abundant. I am deeply grieved to see you suffering and enduring pain because, through your own free choice, you have brought yourselves to this state. I grieve for you, but I can do nothing to help you.” Can you imagine that? God would pity us, but what could He give us? No. His loving-kindness is equal to His almighty power.

His almighty power is fully united with His loving-kindness. Do you see how important this is? “He is not like us, understanding some things and not knowing others.” We know some things and do not know others. “For such a statement is blasphemous and unworthy of the divine hypostasis.” This is extremely important. My dear friends, let us not become blasphemers without realizing it. Every day people say, “What can God do for you? Even God—what can He do for you?” What are you expressing here, my brother? You are attributing weakness to God. You are stripping Him of the divine uncreated energy of almighty power. “He has foreknowledge of all that exists; He is holy and almighty.”

He knows everything and foreknows everything. He is holy, almighty, and better than all things—better than every good thing that exists as part of creation. “More righteous than all and wiser than all; and we are able to comprehend neither His beginning, nor His form, nor His appearance.” Forgive me; the text also contains parentheses, which indicate an alternative reading. Forgive me.

The word “whose” is a relative pronoun. I had underlined it, but I failed to notice it: “whose...”

“Whose form or appearance we cannot comprehend.” “You have neither heard His voice at any time nor seen His form,” as John 5:37 says. Holy Scripture says this. Therefore Moses also said to the Israelites, “Guard your souls with great care, for you saw no likeness.” For it is impossible to imagine His likeness; how much more, then, is it beyond the nous to approach His essence. My dear friends, Moses said here that we have seen no likeness of God.

If, he says, we have not even seen a likeness of God, how can we know God’s essence? Now pay attention. Saint Macarius of Alexandria explains the following in his first homily. He refers to Ezekiel’s vision, in which the prophet saw God upon the four-wheeled chariot. Interpreting Ezekiel’s vision, Saint Macarius says, “What Ezekiel saw was a vision.” And what is such a vision? It is a likeness—but a likeness that has only a symbolic character.

He did not see God Himself. But why should I turn to Ezekiel’s vision and not to the Apocalypse, the Book of Revelation, which is more recent for us? The images are there as well. They are likenesses and images. What are they? My dear friends, they tell us nothing about God’s essence—nothing. They are images and likenesses. We remain at the level of likenesses so that we can understand and speak about these things. Consider language itself. What is language? It is made up of symbols. At this moment I am speaking to you. What does “I am speaking to you” mean? I am using words. And what is a word? It is a symbol. Or suppose I am at the blackboard, drawing mathematical figures—pardon me, writing numbers and drawing geometric shapes. What are these?

Symbols. Do you wish to see that mathematics is the symbolic language by which creation is interpreted? That is what mathematics is. What did I say? A symbolic language. And I ask: if we use representations even for creation itself—

if we use symbols—how much more must we use images and representations when seeking some knowledge of divine and heavenly things? What, then, is the Kingdom of God? The Apostle Paul tells us that the Kingdom of God is that which “eye has not seen” and which “has not entered into the heart of man.”

That, he says, is the Kingdom of God. In other words, it is not possible for a human being to utter it. It cannot be expressed in human language, because human language operates within created things, whereas the Kingdom of God, which it seeks to describe, is uncreated. How, then, can I describe uncreated things through created words? It is impossible. It is impossible. You may say, “But here is a contradiction. Does not the Apocalypse tell us that Saint John saw the Kingdom of God as a city enclosed by walls of gold, diamonds, and precious stones? It had twelve pillars. Do you remember what we said last year when studying the Apocalypse? There it is, described for us.” My dear friends, these are images.

Images of things that cannot be expressed.

Images and representations of things beyond comprehension. There is no contradiction at all. Anyone who read the Apocalypse and dismissed such things as childish notions meant only for immature people still passing through childhood would be very naive indeed. Very naive, I would say, because these images are simply the outward garment of realities beyond comprehension. And so, my dear friends, we see that God has properties and divine uncreated energies. When we know them and stand rightly before Him, we glorify Him. When I say—

“I am going through some tribulation,” and you ask me, “What are you enduring, my friend?” and I answer, “God will provide. God is almighty,” it is useful for me to say that God is almighty. It is very useful—first of all for me personally, and secondly because, by saying that God is almighty, I offer Him praise. When I say that God is all-wise, that God is all-good, or that God will forgive my sins—someone came to me today and asked, “Will He forgive me for the sins I have committed?” God will forgive you for those sins. “But is that possible?” Of course it is possible. So when I know that God will forgive my sins, however great, unusual, or strange they may be, what does that mean? It means that I ascribe to God the true—

property that He is all-good, and in this way I offer Him praise. Here, of course, Saint Cyril inserts a paragraph—or half a paragraph, if you prefer—about how people outside Holy Scripture imagined God. Then, my dear friends, he returns once more to the properties of God’s divine uncreated energies. God willing, we shall continue next Monday.

την ουσία του Θεού. Καταλαβαίνετε τι θα πει ουσία; Αν θέλετε να σας κάνω μια εξήγηση, αν και θα αναφερθεί σε κάτι τέτοιο ο Άγιος Κύριλλος. Αυτή τη στιγμή, αγαπητοί μου, σας βλέπω και με βλέπετε. Αλλά, ειλικρινά, η ουσία σας, παρότι είμαστε ομοούσιοι —οι άνθρωποι μεταξύ μας ομοούσιοι, είναι γνωστό αυτό—, η ουσία σας μού διαφεύγει. Δεν γνωρίζω από τι είσαστε. Και η δική μου η ουσία, που είναι δική σας, σας διαφεύγει. Δεν γνωρίζω, βεβαίως, την ανθρώπινη ουσία, γιατί δεν ξέρουμε και την ουσία της ύλης. Είναι γνωστό. Είναι ο μεγάλος καυγάς: τι είναι ύλη; Και αν πούμε «είναι ενέργεια», τότε η ενέργεια τι είναι;

Εεε... Βλέπει κανείς διά της φάτσας, βλέπει κανείς τον Υιόν και διά του Υιού τον Πατέρα. Αλλά το πρόσωπο του Υιού είναι ένα. Το ξαναλέγω άλλη μια φορά, για να μην είμαι ύποπτος αιρετικών φρονημάτων, ο Θεός φυλάξοι. Ένα είναι το πρόσωπο του Υιού, θεανθρώπινο πρόσωπο. Δεν έχουμε δύο πρόσωπα, γιατί είναι αιρετικό. Αν δεχτούμε δύο πρόσωπα, σημαίνει ότι ο Ιησούς, ο Θεός Λόγος, μπήκε σε έναν άνθρωπο. Δεν μπήκε σε έναν άνθρωπο, αλλά έγινε άνθρωπος. Δεν έχει, λοιπόν, δύο πρόσωπα. Έτσι βλέπει κανένας ότι, όταν λέμε «οι άγγελοι βλέπουν το πρόσωπο του Θεού», ο Θεός ξέρει πώς βλέπουν το πρόσωπο του Θεού. Αν θέλετε ακριβέστερα, ξέρετε πού είδαν το πρόσωπο του Θεού οι άγγελοι; Στο πρόσωπο του Ιησού Χριστού. Γι’ αυτό ο Ιησούς Χριστός είναι το κεντρικό πρόσωπο συμπάσης της ορατής και αοράτου δημιουργίας. Το ξέρετε ότι οι άγγελοι αγιάζουν, σταθεροποιούν την αγιότητά τους με την ενανθρώπηση του Ιησού Χριστού;

Μια καταιγίδα έχει διαλείμματα υπάρξεως ή, όπως η ηλιοφάνεια έχει διαλείμματα υπάρξεως. Λέμε, τώρα είναι νύχτα, δεν έχουμε το φως του Ηλίου, έχουμε ένα διάλειμμα της παρουσίας του Ηλίου. Ο Θεός είναι αεί ων, πάντοτε υπάρχων. «Όμοιον αεί εαυτώ όντα». Όμοιος πάντοτε υπάρχων με τον εαυτόν Του. Τι θα πει αυτό; Είναι χωρίς παραλλαγές. Είναι πάντοτε όμοιος με τον εαυτόν Του. Δεν έχει παραλλαγές. Εγώ είμαι πάντοτε όμοιος με τον εαυτό μου;

Το σώμα πεθαίνει γιατί αποτελείται από πολλά στοιχεία. Διαλυομένων των στοιχείων, σημαίνει θάνατο. Αν η ψυχή όμως δεν δύναται να διαλυθεί, αφού είναι απλή, άρα λοιπόν είναι αθάνατη. Η αθανασία της ψυχής λοιπόν αποδείχθηκε με αυτόν τον τρόπο από τον Πλάτωνα και όλη τη συναφή φιλοσοφία. Εδώ λέγει ότι η ουσία του Θεού είναι μονοειδής, δηλαδή απλή. «Οὐ γὰρ ὅτι καλὸς καὶ ἀγαθὸς καὶ δίκαιος καὶ παντοκράτωρ καὶ Σαβαώθ, παρὰ τοῦτο διάφορός ἐστι καὶ ἀλλοῖος». Όταν αποδίδουμε στον Θεό διάφορες ιδιότητες, ενέργειες, ότι είναι αγαθός, ότι είναι δίκαιος, ότι είναι παντοκράτωρ κτλ., κτλ. και λοιπά, αυτά όλα αποτελούν στοιχεία που τον διαφοροποιούν, τον Θεό;

Τον Θεό δεν έχει δει. Αλλά γιατί να πάω στο όραμα του Ιεζεκιήλ και να μην πάω στο βιβλίο της Αποκαλύψεως, που το έχουμε και πρόσφατο; Είναι εκεί πέρα. Είναι ομοιώματα και εικόνες. Αυτά τι είναι; Δεν έχουν, αγαπητοί μου, τίποτα να μας πουν για την ουσία Του. Τίποτα. Αυτά είναι εικόνες και ομοιώματα. Και εδώ μένουμε μόνο στα ομοιώματα, για να μπορούμε να κάνουμε τη δουλειά μας. Θέλετε, τι είναι η γλώσσα; Σύμβολα. Αυτή τη στιγμή εγώ σας ομιλώ. Τι θα πει «σας ομιλώ»; Χρησιμοποιώ λέξεις. Τι είναι η λέξη; Είναι σύμβολο. Είμαι στο Β και κάνω μαθηματικά σχήματα, συγγνώμη, βάζω αριθμούς και κάνω σχήματα γεωμετρικά. Τι είναι αυτά;
