Summary

The sixth catechesis begins Saint Cyril of Jerusalem’s exposition of the Creed with the confession, “I believe in one God,” and the doctrine of divine monarchy. Orthodox doctrine safeguards both right spiritual life and right worship, whereas false beliefs about God distort prayer and devotion. The saints interpret Scripture faithfully because their purified lives enable them to perceive God beyond merely intellectual or scientific knowledge.

My dear friends, we have reached the sixth catechesis of Saint Cyril of Jerusalem. With God’s help, we are continuing for a third year, and we pray that God will bless this year as well, so that it may bear fruit both in our study of these catechetical texts and in our application of all that we, as catechumens, are learning from our catechist, so to speak, Saint Cyril, Bishop of Jerusalem. Up through the fifth catechesis, we had essentially an introduction. Beginning with the sixth catechesis...

we have an exposition of the Creed. This is an exposition of the form of the Creed used at Jerusalem, which he himself mentioned and which we discussed the last time, in connection with the fifth catechesis. There he spoke to us about faith. And this teaching “about faith” is nothing other than what is understood to be repeated in every article of the Creed. That is: I believe in one God; I believe that this God is the Father; I believe that He is Almighty; I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ; I believe in one holy, catholic, and apostolic Church; and so forth. The words “I believe” stand before every article of the Creed. For reasons of literary structure, of course, they are not actually repeated. They appear only once, at the very beginning of the Creed: “I believe.” In a lengthy catechesis, Saint Cyril explained to us what faith is and how absolutely necessary it is for our salvation. And now he begins the actual exposition of the Creed.

The preface, or heading, of the sixth catechesis reads: “A catechetical instruction delivered in Jerusalem to those preparing for illumination, concerning the monarchy of God, on the words ‘I believe in one God,’ and concerning heresies.” In other words, this catechesis is addressed to those preparing for illumination—those who were about to be baptized and were then receiving catechesis. It was delivered in Jerusalem, and its subject is the phrase, “I believe in one God”—“in one God.” In addition, the catechesis also deals with heresies. And so the catechesis of Saint Cyril begins.

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ; blessed also be His Only-Begotten Son. For as soon as you conceive of God, conceive also of the Father. The doxology offered to the Father and the Son, together with the Holy Spirit, is indivisible. For the Father does not possess one glory and the Son another; rather, there is one and the same glory together with the Holy Spirit. Since the Son is the Father’s Only-Begotten, when the Father is glorified, the Son also shares in that glory. And since the glory of the Son proceeds from the honor given to His Father, when the Son is glorified, the good Father of the Son is likewise magnified.”

I will take up two main points from this first paragraph.

“For as soon as you conceive of God, conceive also of the Father.” At the same time, whenever we speak of God, we must understand that God is also the Father. Even the pagans understood this in the broad sense of the word “father.” It is self-evident: God is the Creator of all things and of mankind. What, if you please, did the ancient Greeks call Zeus? They called him “father of gods and men.” They did not merely say “of gods and men,” but “father.”

And the beautiful prayer of Cleanthes, the Stoic philosopher, characteristically addresses God as “Father” and “O Father.” Thus even the pagans understood that God cannot simply be God, but is also the Father. This is why Saint Cyril says here, “For as soon as you conceive of God, conceive also of the Father.” That is the broader meaning. Here, however, Saint Cyril means above all that God is the Father of a Son, of whom he will speak below. This is God’s final revelation in human history, because for the first time in human history, in the person of Jesus Christ and through Jesus Christ—or, better still, through Jesus Christ and in Jesus Christ—it is revealed that God is Trinity. The Son reveals the Father to us, and He Himself speaks to us about Himself: “He who has seen Me has seen the Father.” Whoever has seen Me has seen the Father. Behind the Son is the Father. This, therefore, is the final revelation.

There can be no newer revelation, whether in the word of God, in eternity, or in the Kingdom of God, beyond this revelation that God is Trinity. For the sake of the historical sequence, let me tell you that the first revelation declared that He is God—that God exists. “And God said, ‘Let Us make man,’” and so forth. The second stage of revelation was that God is the Lord. God Himself says this plainly in the sixth chapter of the book of Exodus, when He speaks with Moses in order to send him to Egypt and bring out His own people, the people of Israel.

“I did not reveal My name, the Lord, to your forefathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. There I said, ‘I am the God of Abraham.’ To you I reveal, ‘I am the Lord.’” What is the difference? The difference is that, at that time, the world and its people believed in many gods. The God who revealed Himself to Abraham might have been regarded as one of those many gods. But now it is revealed to Moses that He is the Lord. There is no other God. God is one—one and only one. As a verse from the Psalms says, “The idols of the nations are demons.”

“The idols of the nations are demons.” There is one Lord. And in the New Testament, the third name of God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This is the third and final revelation, the third and final name of God, referring to the very Godhead itself. This name—that God is Trinity—is so fundamental that it very clearly distinguishes the Christian from the non-Christian. Muslims, for example, might say, “We believe in God,” because they received this belief from the Jews.

They believe in the true God, but where have they remained? At what stage? They have remained at the stage belonging to the age of Moses. Thus there is a clear distinction between being a Christian and being a Muslim. Where does that distinction lie? Do not go searching elsewhere; everything else is secondary. This is the fundamental point: God is Trinity. So I shall repeat the words of Saint Cyril: “For as soon as you conceive of God, conceive also of the Father.” A second point is that the doxology addressed to the Father is also addressed to the Son.

For God has one essence and is therefore indivisible: one essence, three Persons. This is a fundamental dogma, the foundation of the faith—and it is incomprehensible. Good! If this dogma were comprehensible, it would no longer be a Mystery. It would no longer be something beyond our grasp. Whatever can be mastered is not God; it is created. Only the uncreated remains beyond our mastery. Have I mastered God? Then what I have mastered is not God. It is well known—and I do not wish to overanalyze this—that when a person gives a name to an object, he has mastered it. When, beyond giving it a name, he assigns properties to that object, he has mastered it even further. When man can weigh the earth and tell us how many kilograms it weighs—do not be surprised—or weigh the sun and tell us how many tons it weighs, it makes no difference that man has never gone to the sun. He has nevertheless mastered the sun. From the moment—and let me put this a little more precisely—from the moment a quantity can be measured, it has been mastered. Let me say it once more. From the moment a quantity is subjected to measurement and thus enters our system of names and classifications, it has been mastered. Does God have a name?

God is nameless and therefore has many names, as Saint John of Damascus says. Why does He have many names? Because He is nameless. You may say, “But what about the name you just mentioned: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit?” That is not a name. My dear friends, what does it actually tell us? We know nothing. What does “Father” mean? John Chrysostom asks. When thinking of the Father, do not imagine all the features of a created act of begetting and birth. The Father does not have a wife and then beget the Son—these are human notions. Without our knowing what this means, the name indicates that the Son is begotten of the Father and is consubstantial, of one essence with Him. But we do not know what “Son” means.

We do not know what it means that the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father. We do not know. There is complete unknowing, and it will remain unto ages of ages, even within the Kingdom of God, because these things belong, so to speak, to the very Godhead and to the nature of the Godhead. So, my dear friends, we can say nothing further. Nevertheless, if I confess that God is Trinity, my worship is right and Orthodox. This much God has revealed to me: that I am to confess that God is Trinity, that the second Person is the Son, and that the third Person is the Holy Spirit.

The Son is begotten, and therefore He is the Son. He is also called the Word (Logos). And the Holy Spirit proceeds. From whom alone? From the Father. Simply by confessing these things, I worship God in an Orthodox manner. Since this catechesis also speaks about heresies, I will repeat something I have told you many times. Orthodoxy has two aims. Is my desire to be Orthodox merely a barren pursuit, so to speak, or a form of pride? For you know that even this is attacked in our time. “What does it mean to be Orthodox?” people ask. “It means you are a fanatic.”

They even call the Fathers of our Church fanatics. My dear friends, Orthodoxy has consequences in two areas. The first is a right way of life—that is, a right spirituality. If you ever have the opportunity to discover what Roman Catholic spirituality is like, I will say this: may I not live to see the day, if God permits Western spirituality to come to Greece. May I not live to see it. If I am alive when it comes, I assure you, I do not know how I shall feel. Western spirituality is dreadful when compared with Eastern spirituality. And from where does this difference arise?

It arises from doctrinal positions. The second consequence of Orthodoxy is the right worship of God. Worship that is not right is not acceptable either. Suppose, for example, that I say to God: “Well, Lord, I know You cannot pay attention to everyone. After all, what can You do with so many people? How can You possibly reach them all? So, Lord, if You can, please do something for me.” Such words are blasphemy. I am belittling God’s omnipotence and omniscience. Do you remember the father of that afflicted child—a father who was himself afflicted?

He says, “Lord, if You can, make my child well.” “If I can? The issue does not lie with Me, but with you—whether you believe.” What does the Lord do here for that father? He corrects him. Worship of God is not acceptable when it is not Orthodox. This is why worship offered to God without right belief turns into a curse, into the absence of blessing. So understand this: Orthodox Christians insist with all the strength of their souls on remaining Orthodox. And because we are in danger of losing our Orthodox identity, I emphasize these things to you.

Let us remember them and pray, and let us not suppose that our steadfast adherence to Orthodoxy is something barren. Here, then, Saint Cyril says that when the Father is glorified, the Son and the Holy Spirit are also glorified. In practical terms, when I offer my prayer to the Father, it is also addressed to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. When I glorify the Son, my doxology—even if I do not mention the Father and the Holy Spirit—is also addressed to the Father and to the Holy Spirit. When I beseech the Holy Spirit to overshadow me, help me, and grant me illumination...

I am asking the same thing of the Father and the Son. This means that whenever I address one of the three Persons, I am in reality addressing all three Persons of the Holy Trinity. Why? Because God is one; the essence is one. Glory and doxology pass to all three Persons. A little further on, in the second paragraph, Saint Cyril will tell us, “I would like to speak to you about God. But what can I tell you? The mind grasps swiftly, but the tongue needs words and a lengthy unfolding of the intervening thoughts.” He then gives the following example, which I will paraphrase rather than read aloud to you.

With a single glance, he says, we see all the stars in the sky. With a single glance. But if we had to speak about them, we would need many words and many hours. In the same way, we may grasp whatever we are able to grasp about the Godhead, but to express it we would have to speak on and on without end. Nevertheless, “We do not say all that ought to be said about God, for that is known to Him alone, but only as much as human nature can contain and as much as our weakness is able to bear.”

“For we do not explain what God is; rather, we gratefully confess that we do not know the exact truth about Him. For in matters concerning God, it is great knowledge to confess our ignorance.” Here he is saying that man cannot comprehend many things, because human nature has only a limited capacity to understand and a limited capacity to bear. Therefore, by our very constitution, my dear friends, there are many things we cannot know. Notice those words: “by our very constitution.” Let me make a brief digression. Kant has already demonstrated this. Why do I mention Kant? Kant is a philosopher. His philosophy has nothing to do with the Gospel. Do not tell me that it does. I repeat, without explaining further: Kantian philosophy has nothing to do with the Gospel. Yet he succeeded in demonstrating that human reason has limits; it is finite. Why have I brought this up? Because we human beings have great confidence in ourselves, and deep within us we believe in the theory of evolution: that the human mind understands certain things today, but tomorrow, as man evolves, it will understand more. And so you will very often hear

this claim: “We do not understand it today, but we shall understand it later.” Yes, but how far can we go? Of course, there are matters we shall understand better tomorrow; there is no question about that. We see this even in a single person, as he passes from childhood to maturity. In childhood, of course, he does not understand many things. His mind will certainly unfold. I avoid saying “evolve,” lest anyone suppose that the mind was not from the beginning what it ought to be, but becomes something else as it advances through learning. No! The mind unfolds. It is the same mind that came into being at the moment you were conceived in your mother’s womb. The mind unfolds, just as a bud is already the

whole flower and fruit, needing only to unfold before me, to open, and nothing more. The bud—or “eye,” as it is called there at the tip of a tree branch—takes in only nourishment. Everything is already contained within that eye, that plant bud. In the same way, the human mind does not evolve in the sense of becoming something new or different. It unfolds, and afterward it may also be cultivated. Since knowledge accumulates, of course, Socrates did not know the things we know today, and yet Socrates was wise, as was Plato.

A child in primary school today knows far more facts than Socrates and Plato knew. Yet Socrates remains Socrates and Plato remains Plato, and they are rightly called wise. Therefore, when we say that the human mind is limited, that it has boundaries, we mean that it cannot be cultivated without limit. It has boundaries. It has boundaries. That is the end of it. And as for what we call progress today, I do not know whether it is genuine progress or actually a regression. That is something to be investigated, not something we may simply take for granted. Nevertheless, my dear friends, I emphasize this: the human mind is limited. It has boundaries. It cannot pass beyond

those boundaries. For although the human mind is capable of lofty flights, it still moves within space and time, because it is itself a product of space and time. Man is created, and his mind is created as well. Can it go beyond space and time? When, for example, the Apostle Paul says, “It is not lawful for a man to utter,” he means that human language cannot speak of and describe the Kingdom of God. Do you know what this means? It means that we have no such capacity, because these things are beyond this world—or, more precisely, beyond space and time. Beyond space and time. There you see the boundaries of the human mind. Therefore

Saint Cyril rightly says: “We do not say all that ought to be said about God,” not everything that should be said concerning God, “but only as much as human nature can contain, and as much as our weakness is able to bear,” as much as our own weakness and frailty can bear and hold. What did the Lord say to His disciples? “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.” It is like a primary-school teacher saying, “My children, I have many wise things to tell you, but you cannot bear them yet.” Such is human weakness. “For we do not explain what God is.” We shall not explain what God is.

“Rather, we gratefully confess that we do not know the exact truth about Him.” We gratefully confess that we do not know precisely what the divine essence is. Pay close attention to this phrase: “For in matters concerning God, it is great knowledge to confess one’s ignorance.” In everything concerning God, it is regarded as great knowledge to perceive and confess one’s ignorance of God. Here we also see the great value of Socrates’ saying: “I know one thing: that I know nothing.” If one explores this deeply,

it means: “Through the abundance of my wisdom, I have understood that I know nothing.” I remember one of our professors, a teacher of literature, now departed. I owe him deep gratitude and commemorate him. What a great professor means, what a great teacher means, my dear friends! This is why we commemorate our teachers. The Church commemorates teachers. It is a great thing. What did Alexander say? “I owe my life to my parents, but my good life to Aristotle.” This professor used to tell us that man, within the realm in which he lives, is like someone standing inside a circle. At first this circle is defined and small. But the more its circumference expands, the more extensively it touches...

the Unknown. This means that the wiser I become, the more deeply I sense the Unknown. I do not know whether you understood the example. This is why Saint Cyril says here that, in matters concerning God, great knowledge consists in seeing one’s own ignorance. Indeed, my dear friends, beyond this great truth, we find here another important principle, one that is basic and fundamental to Eastern spirituality. I was speaking to you about this earlier.

I do not know how I would feel if we ever found ourselves here, in our own land, compelled to live within the framework of Western spirituality. Pay attention, because this is fundamental. As is well known, we in the East have two approaches in theology: the one called cataphatic, or affirmative theology, and the one called apophatic, or negative theology. The cataphatic approach to theology—from the Greek words for affirmation and affirming—is simply a way

of knowing God through His creatures, through creation, and through history—that is, through God’s interventions in history, and so forth. In other words, it seeks knowledge of God through the created, perceptible world. Apophatic theology, or negative theology, by contrast, comes from the Greek words meaning denial or negation; the Greek word here has nothing to do with the word “decision” as we use it in modern Greek. It means denial. Apophatic theology is theology that refuses to accept created nature as the path by which man comes to know God.

How, then, will he know Him? He will know God directly. He has no need for creation as an intermediary. Of course, I must tell you that the cataphatic element is not absent from our own spirituality. Saint Cyril, in particular, uses both the cataphatic element—which is Orthodox—and the apophatic element in his catecheses. But he does not remain only with the cataphatic element, which ultimately forms the foundation of Western spirituality. What is this apophatic element? It is to say: why must creation mediate between me and God in order for me to know Him? To put it in simpler terms,

the West says that we shall come to understand God by cultivating the sciences. This is why, even from earlier times, from the Middle Ages, you will see that the Western Church encouraged priests to pursue studies. We have many great, distinguished, and renowned founders of scientific fields.

Mendel, for example, is a fitting case. He was the father of genetics, and he was a priest, because the Western Church believed that by cultivating and advancing the sciences and learning, we would come to know God better.

We can, of course, come to know God through the sciences and the arts—that is, cataphatically—because Holy Scripture itself calls us to study creation. In fact, since the passage is at hand, I read it yesterday to my advanced catechism class. Saint Isaac the Syrian says: “Study insatiably, with an unquenchable hunger, the books of those who investigate nature—whatever they write about the natural world, plants, animals, astronomy, geology, or anything else. Study them insatiably.” By beholding the order of creation, he says, you will become aware of your Creator. Indeed, many books of the Old Testament move within this same sphere: the Wisdom

of Solomon, the Wisdom of Sirach, the Book of Proverbs, and the Book of Job all move within cataphatic theology. But we do not remain with the cataphatic approach alone. Why? Quite simply, because knowledge by itself will not ultimately bring us to know God. The Apostle Paul is our witness. Does the Apostle Paul not say in the first chapter of Romans that men did not come to know God through human wisdom? Does he not say this? And although God placed upon creation the seal of His existence, His presence, His divinity, and His everlastingness—that is, His eternity—

men ultimately did not come to know the true God, and instead of worshipping the true God, they worshipped creation. This is why he says: “O man, you are without excuse.” You cannot defend yourself by saying, “I did not know God.” You are without excuse. You are without excuse. Where does the evil lie? Pay close attention, please. The evil lies in this: when you begin to study creation in order to know God while your heart is unclean, you will interpret creation wrongly. And so...

the cataphatic method is dangerous. In the end, it may fail to lead us to God. I shall say it again: an unclean heart will interpret nature in an unclean way. Would you like an example? Consider the exploitation—not the original formulation; I am not attacking Darwin, for Darwin was an intelligent man, but this is not the time to discuss that, and we have spoken of it before—the exploitation of the theory of evolution in an effort to prove that man descends from the ape. Do you know what this really is? It is an attempt to interpret creation. And where do we arrive? We arrive at distorted results and mistaken conclusions. Why? Because

in making this attempt, we did not first take care to purify our hearts. It is well known that atheism, in all its forms and degrees, makes use of the theory of evolution. This is very well known. The conclusion, then, is this: how shall I come to know God? By purifying my heart. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” This is Eastern Orthodox spirituality. Of course, there may have been clergymen, theologians, and intellectuals in the East, but Christianity in the East, my dear friends, never cultivated the sciences systematically. It did so incidentally, here and there, but never systematically.

Never as a way of knowing God. This is why the East has the ascetic life. What is asceticism? A person leaves everything behind, whatever his level of education may be, and goes to purify his heart. Once his heart has been purified, he will know God. This is the apophatic way. But we have not yet reached the heart of the matter. You understand, then, that I will interpret neither man nor God correctly—or rather, I will not understand Holy Scripture—unless I have a pure heart. This is of fundamental importance for interpreting the Gospel. That is why, if you look into...

What are the Saints? I will tell you. They are those who, through the way they lived and with a pure heart, interpreted Holy Scripture correctly. So what follows? Yes, only the Saints, through their manner of life, have interpreted Holy Scripture. Every interpretation of Holy Scripture outside the realm of holiness leads into error. This, my dear friends, is why the Saints are so valuable to us. This is why we appeal to what the Saints have said in order to understand Holy Scripture. But we have still not reached the heart of the matter.

In many places Saint Cyril tells us to look at creation and study it, but in many other places he tells us to know God apophatically. And what does he say here? “For in matters concerning God, it is great knowledge to confess one’s lack of knowledge.” Great knowledge means confessing that you do not know. But what sort of lack of knowledge is this? As the heart is purified, a person begins to acquire a sense of God. And once he has this sense of God, the poor man beholds God’s majesty and his own poverty. If you ask him, “What do you know about God?” he will answer, “Nothing.”

The deeper his knowledge of God becomes—and it is knowledge gained through experience, because the knowledge of God, you see, is not merely an intellectual phenomenon—the more this becomes knowledge involving his whole being. It is experiential: it involves my nous, my heart, my feelings, my will, my soul, and my body. We would say that this knowledge belongs to the whole of one’s existence, the whole person. And so man comes to say, “I know nothing about God.” You will hear the great Saints confess: “O Unknown One, my great Unknown.” Saint Symeon the New Theologian and others say, “My great Unknown, yet so well known.” Listen to that: “My great Unknown, yet so well known.”

Let us look at this in a more tangible way. What could those who saw Jesus Christ in His own time have said? Who is Jesus Christ? A man, five feet nine inches tall, a particular human being. That is Jesus Christ, nothing more. Come, let us touch Him, weigh Him, measure Him, and describe Him. We might call this a cataphatic method. We weighed Him and measured Him. But after Pentecost, when the disciples realized who Jesus Christ truly is, they were overcome with awe. Who was the One with whom they had lived every day? My dear friends, it made them reel! And what could they say then?

While they knew Him during His earthly life, if someone had asked them, “Do you know Jesus Christ?” they would have answered, “Of course I know Him. He was my teacher.” Listen to the shallowness of it, the childish shallowness: “Of course I know Him. He was my teacher”—a man. But if we had asked them after Pentecost, “Do you know who Jesus Christ is?” they would have answered, “He is the Son and Word (Logos) of God who became man. We do not know Him.” He can be touched, yet at the same time He is beyond all touch. We do not know Him; we cannot comprehend Him. We can say nothing adequate about the divine Word (Logos) who became man. How did the Incarnation take place? You disciples of the Teacher, who spent three years learning at His side, do you not know? They did not know. This lack of knowledge is the great knowledge. I believe, then...

I believe you have understood. This profound acknowledgment of our lack of knowledge, my dear friends, is the foundation of Eastern Orthodox spirituality. It rests upon this—and, in essence, upon the purification of the heart. Therefore, we should not say, “We will begin studying this or that,” unless we first, or at least at the same time, strive to purify our hearts. This does not mean, of course, that such study is forbidden. But we will understand nothing in Holy Scripture unless we cease sinning. Be certain of that. This is why those who take up Holy Scripture while living in a state of great sinfulness interpret it wrongly. I have heard such...

outrageously blasphemous claims about Holy Scripture from people of our own day that I say, “How horrifying! How horrifying! How horrifying!” But why does this happen? If they themselves are like the filth of the Augean stables, what conclusions could they produce except words expressing the very passions from which they suffer? Recall just one telling example. Remember, my dear friends, what Kazantzakis said about Jesus Christ in his book The Last Temptation. Remember: where did such things come from? From an impure heart. Remember also a recent play performed in Athens, which portrays... I cannot say it. I cannot. Why does all this happen?

These people have impure hearts. How can you understand the word of God? How can you understand the Gospel? So I ask you to understand that the way is the purification of the heart—the path of nepsis, or watchfulness—the path by which we cleanse the heart. Otherwise, our labor is in vain. Was I greedy? I will no longer be greedy. Am I irascible? I will cease to be. Immoral? I will cease to be. And I will not stop at these negative renunciations. Positively, I will become gentle, meek, truly human, and loving toward others. By every means I will cultivate virtue and live virtuously. “Great...” Paragraph three.

“Abraham was great and honorable, but he was great in the eyes of men. When he came before God, he spoke truthfully and with gratitude: ‘I am earth and ashes.’ He did not say ‘earth’ and then fall silent, lest he should call himself that great element. He added ‘and ashes’ in order to show how easily he could be dissolved and how frail he was.” Abraham, he says, was great, honorable, and distinguished—but great and honorable among men. When God once revealed Himself to him, Abraham spoke the truth and said:

“I am earth and ashes. Earth and ashes—that is what I am.” Do you see? He did not say merely “earth” and then fall silent, lest Abraham be taken to mean that he was the great element of earth itself—our Mother Earth, so to speak, Demeter, the goddess of the earth. Lest Abraham, because he was great, should appear to identify himself with the earth itself, he said, “I am ashes”—earth and ashes, dust and ashes; that is, I am nothing. Ashes, he says, readily crumble and scatter. I am nothing. When did Abraham, who was great and honorable among men, say this? When he encountered God.

When God revealed Himself to him, then, my dear friends, Abraham said, “I am nothing.” This is the acknowledgment of not knowing; this is the acknowledgment of not knowing. And when did it come? When he came to know God.

And when you behold... all the heavens... He gives an example here, but I will not spend the whole hour on it, since only a few minutes remain. Paragraph four: “Whoever attempts to speak about God,” he says, “must first describe the ends of the earth. You dwell upon the earth, yet you do not know the boundaries of the inhabited world. How, then, will you be able worthily to comprehend its Maker?” Whoever attempts to speak about God must first describe to us the ends of the earth—where the earth ends. You dwell on the earth, yet I see that you cannot tell me where its boundaries lie. You live on the earth, but you do not know the end, the boundary, of your own home. Is the earth not your home? Tell me where its edge lies. You do not know. How, then, will you be able worthily and fittingly to understand and comprehend its Maker, God? This, we might say, is a very important cataphatic position. Truly, one need only look in order to behold God. We say, “God is mighty.” How many times have I told you this? If a person looks even a little more deeply at the universe—just a little—he is overcome with awe at how mighty God is.

Holy Scripture also says, “He has done all that He willed.” God did whatever He willed. It is awe-inspiring. Who is God? My dear friends, allow me to make a connection here. It is unthinkable that people who hear the word of God, and those who speak about such lofty truths concerning God—as far as anyone is capable of speaking about and hearing such things, as Saint Cyril describes them here—should ever come to blaspheme the name of God. It is unthinkable, though sometimes it is sadly not surprising. Anyone who has ever blasphemed God’s name should shudder at everything we have said and cry, “What have I done?”

“What have I done? I will repent. I will never do this again.” He will tremble lest, whether through an ingrained reaction of anger or through an established habit, he repeat it. He will say, “I will be careful. I will tremble lest this happen again,” because he now understands how dreadful it is: that I, a small human being, should go so far as to blaspheme the holy name of God. “But are you unable to recognize your own weakness? From this, learn the power of God.” He says, “Can you not understand your own weakness? Do you not know who you are? From this, understand and come to know the power of God”—how great God is.

“First gaze upon the sun, and only then inquire into its Master.” Look at the sun, and then come and speak about the Master, the Lord Jesus, the Maker of the sun. “Do not seek what is too deep for you, nor investigate what is beyond your strength. Reflect upon what you have been commanded.” This is from the Wisdom of Sirach, 3:22. Do not seek what is too deep for you, and do not investigate what is beyond your strength. Set your mind upon what you have been commanded to consider. This is exactly what I told you at the beginning. But forgive me, when it says, “what is too deep for you”...

“Do not seek to investigate what is beyond your strength.” Holy Scripture itself often tells us not to probe more deeply than our abilities permit. My dear friends, this command from Holy Scripture is not telling us to remain on the surface of things. Look at the Fathers of our Church and see their depth. Study Saint Gregory the Theologian and Saint Gregory of Nyssa, and you will encounter a depth that will leave you awestruck. What these men grasped, my dear friends! What they grasped! What eyes they possessed! That is not what this passage is speaking about.

It is speaking about what I told you at the beginning of my talk concerning Kant, who demonstrated the limitations of the human intellect. In other words, be attentive. Recognize the limits of your intellect and of your abilities. Be careful how far you venture. If you attempt to learn things beyond the reach of your intellect, you will fall into error. And once you have fallen into error, who will bring you back? My dear friends, Saint Cyril’s catechesis concerning God is not yet finished. God willing, we will continue next Monday.

Διότι η ουσία είναι μία του Θεού και, συνεπώς, ο Θεός είναι αδιαίρετος. Μία η ουσία, τρία τα πρόσωπα. Θεμελιώδες δόγμα, η βάση της πίστεως, ακατανόητο, όμορφα. Εάν ήταν κατανοητόν το δόγμα αυτό, τότε δεν θα ήταν πια ένα μυστήριο. Δεν θα ήταν εκείνο που θα μπορούσαμε να είπουμε ότι δεν μπορούμε να το κατακτήσουμε. Παν ό,τι κατακτάται δεν είναι Θεός. Είναι κτιστόν. Μόνο το άκτιστο μένει ακατάκτητο. Κατέκτησα τον Θεό; Δεν είναι Θεός. Είναι γνωστό ότι, χωρίς να πολυπραγμονήσω, όταν ο άνθρωπος δίδει όνομα σε ένα αντικείμενο το κατέκτησε. Όταν ο άνθρωπος, πέραν του ονόματος, δώσει ιδιότητες σε αυτό το αντικείμενο, ακόμη περισσότερο το κατέκτησε. Όταν μπορεί να ζυγίζει τη Γη και να μας λέει πόσα κιλά είναι, μην σας κάνει εντύπωση, ή να ζυγίζει τον Ήλιο και να μας λέει πόσοι τόνοι είναι, δεν έχει σημασία το ότι δεν πήγε ο άνθρωπος στον Ήλιο. Κατέκτησε τον Ήλιο όμως. Από τη στιγμή, θα το πω έτσι λιγάκι πιο καλύτερα, από τη στιγμή που ένα ποσόν μπαίνει στη μέτρηση, κατεκτήθηκε. Θα το πω άλλη μια φορά. Από τη στιγμή που ένα ποσόν μπαίνει στη μέτρηση, υφίσταται μέτρηση και, συνεπώς, μπαίνει στην ονοματολογία, κατεκτήθηκε. Ο Θεός έχει όνομα;

Λέγουν και τους Πατέρες της Εκκλησίας μας φανατισμένους ανθρώπους. Αγαπητοί μου, η ορθοδοξότητα σε δύο πράγματα αποβλέπει, ως επιπτώσεις. Το πρώτο είναι ο σωστός βίος. Ο σωστός βίος, δηλαδή η σωστή πνευματικότητα. Αν σας δοθεί η δυνατότητα να γνωρίσετε ποια είναι η ρωμαιοκαθολική πνευματικότητα, εγώ θα πω το εξής: να μη ζω, αν ο Θεός επιτρέψει και έρθει στην Ελλάδα η δυτική πνευματικότητα. Να μη ζω, να μην το δω. Εάν ζω και έλθει, σας βεβαιώνω, δεν ξέρω πώς θα αισθανθώ. Είναι φοβερή η δυτική πνευματικότητα σε σχέση με την ανατολική πνευματικότητα. Από πού απορρέει αυτό;

Να το δούμε λιγάκι έτσι, πιο χειροπιαστό. Εκείνοι που θα μπορούσαν να έβλεπαν στην εποχή του τον Ιησού Χριστό, τι θα μπορούσαν να έλεγαν; Ποιος είναι ο Ιησούς Χριστός; Ένας άνθρωπος, ένα και εβδομήντα πέντε, συγκεκριμένος. Αυτός είναι ο Ιησούς Χριστός, τίποτα άλλο. Ελάτε να τον ψηλαφήσουμε, να τον ζυγίσουμε, να τον μετρήσουμε, να τον χαρακτηρίσουμε. Θα λέγαμε ότι αυτή είναι μια καταφατική μέθοδος. Τον ζυγίσαμε, τον μετρήσαμε. Οι μαθηταί, μετά την Πεντηκοστή, όταν αντελήφθησαν ποιος είναι ο Ιησούς Χριστός, τους έπιασε ίλιγγος. Ποιος ήταν εκείνος με τον οποίο ήσαν κάθε μέρα μαζί; Αγαπητοί μου, ίλιγγος! Και τότε τι θα μπορούσαν να λέγουν;

εξοργιστικά βλάσφημες θέσεις των συγχρόνων μας επάνω στην Αγία Γραφή, που λέω: φρίκη, φρίκη, φρίκη. Αλλά γιατί; Αφού οι ίδιοι είναι η κόπρος του Αυγείου, τι άλλα θα έβγαζαν συμπεράσματα παρά να λέγουν αυτά που οι ίδιοι πάσχουν; Θυμηθείτε μόνο έτσι ένα ενδεικτικό παράδειγμα. Θυμηθείτε, αγαπητοί μου, θυμηθείτε τον Καζαντζάκη, που τι έχει πει για τον Ιησού Χριστό στο βιβλίο του «Ο Τελευταίος Πειρασμός». Θυμηθείτε, αυτά από πού ειπώθηκαν; Από μια βρώμικη καρδιά. Θυμηθείτε ένα τελευταίο θεατρικό έργο που παίχτηκε στην Αθήνα και παρουσιάζει... Δεν μπορώ να το πω. Δεν μπορώ. Όλα αυτά γιατί;
