Summary

Saint Cyril teaches catechumens to acquire the faith through both careful understanding and memorized recitation. Authentic interpretation agrees with the Orthodox consciousness preserved in Scripture, the councils, and the tradition of the Holy Fathers. Because human reason alone can distort revelation into heresy, believers must humbly guard the apostolic deposit entrusted to them and live according to it.

We are in paragraph twelve of Saint Cyril’s Fifth Catechetical Lecture, which concerns the subject of faith. “Acquire the faith through both learning and recitation, and hold fast only to the faith now being handed down to you by the Church, fortified by the whole of Holy Scripture. For not everyone is able to read the Scriptures: some are hindered from gaining knowledge by lack of education, and others by the demands of their occupations. Therefore, lest the soul perish through ignorance, we encompass the whole doctrine of the faith in a few lines, which, even as it is being…”

“…spoken, I want you to commit to memory and to recite among yourselves with all diligence, not writing it down on paper, but engraving it upon your heart through memory.” Saint Cyril is now speaking of certain things that he wants to establish firmly as knowledge in his catechumens, those preparing for illumination. Just as a pupil—pardon me, just as a teacher wants what he has taught to become the possession of those being instructed, his pupils, and must therefore have some assurance that they have learned what they were supposed to learn, so Saint Cyril also insists upon having some certainty…”

“…that his catechumens know what he has told them. At the very least, they must know its broad outlines and basic points.”

He says, “Acquire the faith through both learning and recitation.” Take care to acquire the faith through learning—that is, through understanding—but also through recitation, meaning by heart, as you know from the early years of school.

So, he says, when teaching children, let us place emphasis upon learning by heart—upon memorization, as we would say. He calls it recitation.

The child must learn it by heart, as we say. But of course, the point is neither that a child should learn only by heart nor that he should learn nothing by heart. I remember that when we studied grammar, we certainly learned a great many things by heart. We had to know how to conjugate the verb “to be” in all the tenses—at least in the indicative—and all the other moods in the present tense. Then we had to learn the active, middle, and passive voices. We also had to learn the contracted verbs. If we did not know these things, how could we move any further? They were the patterns by which we learned how a verb should be conjugated.

We had to learn the three declensions, which have now been abolished. They have been abolished—yes, abolished; they no longer exist. If you ask a secondary-school pupil today, “How many declensions are there?” he will stare blankly at you. “What are you talking about?” He may answer “five,” or he may even say, “me.” We no longer have declensions now. Did you know that? Why should we? Every noun has its own declension, so there—you have simplified it! We tried to simplify things and made them worse. Never mind. The point is that we used to learn certain things by heart. Learning some things by heart is of fundamental importance. This also applies to the faith. But if we wanted to have…”

“…pupils who learned everything by heart, they would acquire knowledge in a mechanical, mechanistic way. That is not right either. We must therefore also have understanding and penetrate deeply into knowledge; then what remains in the memory will come from that understanding. No one can remember everything word for word, but when a person understands a subject, he remembers it. And this is the point I want us to grasp: the memory possesses knowledge in two ways—through deep understanding and through recitation, that is, knowledge learned by heart. Saint Cyril will use both here. Indeed, I do not know whether I should say more; perhaps I should not, since this is only a brief point. Some parents—and I have seen this with their children—try to “help” them by making them learn the lesson word for word.

That is terribly exhausting. It simply cannot be done. Recently I heard of a girl who was even in upper secondary school. Her mother held the book while the daughter recited the lesson by heart. When her literature teacher at school realized what was happening, she said, “My child, you have ruined yourself.” Knowledge learned by heart is certainly important, but it must not be the only kind of knowledge. If I learn everything by heart, first of all it is extremely difficult, and then knowledge becomes something mechanical for me rather than something I experience and live. I shall always remain on the surface. I shall never truly live it, and I shall never develop a philosophical mind. This is very serious—extremely serious. I am telling you this so that you will understand and will not demand that your children memorize everything and “play the parrot,” as the children themselves call it. No, no.

They must go deeply into their subject, learn it, understand it, and truly know it. There are even preachers who memorize their sermons word for word. It is strange; I am astonished and amazed. I truly am. Recently I met a famous preacher—a famous man—who told me that he learned his sermons by heart. I had never even suspected it. I asked him, “Even every ‘and’?” He replied, “Even every ‘and.’” Good heavens, what a dreadful thing! So we must learn both by heart and through deep understanding, and both are preserved in the memory. For anything we have not learned properly will never remain in our memory. Only what we learn genuinely and truly remains there. And he says:

“Hold fast only to the faith now being handed down to you by the Church, fortified by the whole of Holy Scripture.” Take care to learn only what the Church hands down to you and only what she confirms through Holy Scripture. Saint Cyril then says that not everyone can know the Scriptures. The Scriptures, pardon me—for some people are illiterate. Some are hindered by lack of education; that is, they do not have a particularly keen intellect. Others are burdened with many occupations. They have so much to do that they have no time to learn anything more deeply or fully. For this reason…”

“…‘we encompass the whole doctrine of the faith in a few lines.’ For this reason, we encompass the entirety of the doctrines in a few lines. These lines are none other than the Symbol of Faith, which we shall discuss a little later, so that no soul, he says, may suffer spiritual death through ignorance or any other cause, such as negligence. This matter of the few lines is very important. That is precisely why our Church took care to have what are called her Symbols of Faith, which, as I explained, we shall discuss a little later.

“Keep this as your provision throughout your whole life, and accept no other besides it.” Keep this knowledge, he says, as your provision throughout your whole life; accept no other teaching. “Even if we ourselves should change and contradict what we now teach you, or if a hostile angel, disguising himself as an angel of light, should seek to deceive you. For even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what you have now received, let him be anathema.” Here, of course, Saint Cyril is quoting the Apostle Paul, even word for word, when he says that you must accept no teaching other than the one the Church will hand down to you. Whoever may come and tell you something different…”

“…even if we ourselves should come and tell you something different, or even if an angel from heaven should come and tell you something different, do not accept it and do not believe it. My dear friends, do not imagine that this phrase, “an angel from heaven,” is merely a figure of speech. Do not think that. I personally know of a case in which an “angel from heaven”—that is, a demon—actually gave an interpretation of a passage from the Old Testament. I even have that passage in writing; it was handed to me as a written account. And the interpretation was incorrect. That was the chief reason I began to suspect that this revelation was certainly not from God…”

“…but from the devil. Take note: the devil is quite willing to interpret Holy Scripture. One essential way of discerning whether something comes from God or from the devil is to see whether it gives us a false interpretation. We therefore need either to know Holy Scripture correctly ourselves or to turn to someone well versed in the interpretation of Holy Scripture, who can help us and tell us whether it comes from God or from the devil. As one contemporary theologian says, the devil may interpret a thousand things correctly for you; if he tells you one crooked thing, he has gained by it. But you can immediately expose the devil…”

“…and conclude that everything else he told you also came from him, even if it appeared good and seemed to be interpreted correctly. Somewhere or other you will catch him out, because it is impossible for the devil not to play his dirty trick. As I have told you, this is a sure—sure, indeed most certain—criterion for discerning the source of an interpretation. Holy Scripture bears witness to this; the Apostle Paul bears witness to it; and Saint Cyril bears witness when he says, “Even if an angel should come from heaven and tell you something different from what we ourselves have told you, you must not accept it.” You see, then, that this is evidence by which we can discern the source of an interpretation…”

“…namely, whether it agrees with the mind of the Church. I have told you this many times, and you know it, my dear friends, but it must become deeply rooted in your conscience. What do I mean? The treasury, the repository of Orthodox interpretation, is the Church. It is the Church. How does the Church interpret this? That is what we shall accept if we are to be called Orthodox. In other words, it is what the universal Orthodox consciousness has received in the Holy Spirit. This deposit of truth is, of course, found in Holy Scripture, in the Ecumenical Councils, in the local Synods of our Church—in other words, in this tradition of the Holy Fathers.

If an interpretation given to us agrees with the spirit of the Church’s interpretation, it is acceptable, it is Orthodox, and we shall receive it. This is what Saint Cyril is saying here: “Take heed, and accept no other besides it.” You must accept no other interpretation and no other faith. Take careful heed. “For the present, listen to and memorize the faith exactly as it is worded; then, at the proper time, await the confirmation from the divine Scriptures of each point contained within it. For the articles of the faith were not composed according to what seemed good to men. Rather, the most essential teachings gathered from the whole of Holy Scripture complete the one doctrine of the faith.” Indeed, the content of our faith is not the product of human invention. “For it was not composed according to what seemed good to men.” That is, it was not put together according to what human beings considered best, as the human intellect might invent it. No. Where, then, does it come from? We have everything from Holy Scripture. “Rather, the most essential teachings from the whole of Holy Scripture”—the most important, the most fundamental—“have been gathered together to complete the one doctrine of the faith.”

Indeed, one of the great virtues of Saint Cyril’s catechetical lectures, which shows him to be an outstanding catechist—and our great blessing is that this body of twenty-four lectures has been preserved in its entirety down to our own day—is precisely this: it is a true treasure, one of the marvelous works that has come down to us. Among Saint Cyril’s many gifts as a teacher is this particular quality: he offers nothing without confirmation from Holy Scripture. He says nothing that Holy Scripture does not say. And he gives you the reference, showing you where what he is telling you is written.

He draws upon the whole of the Old and New Testaments—the whole of Holy Scripture—to tell you something. This scriptural confirmation is of great importance. Thus, confirmation from Holy Scripture combined with Orthodox interpretation is what we need in the catechesis we offer our people. “Just as the mustard seed contains many branches within one tiny grain, so this faith, in a few words, has gathered into itself all the knowledge of godliness contained in the Old and New Testaments.” As he says, in one tiny grain which, when it sprouts, will produce… a mustard seed, pardon me—not a grain…

Mustard seed. A tiny mustard seed, when we sow it, will grow into a whole trunk with branches. For a seed is nothing other than a plant in potential. I have said this before; it is a beautiful way of looking at it. The seed is a complete plant in potential. So, just as this mustard seed will produce an entire little tree with all its branches, a single word in a concise teaching can contain immense riches. That is what he means. Take, for example, the word “homoousios”—“consubstantial”—that much-disputed word which was included in the Symbol of Faith:

the Son is consubstantial, of one essence, with the Father, and so forth. It is only one word, yet it is absolutely essential and foundational. We can truly see how the Fathers of our Church succeeded, through highly condensed meanings and very carefully chosen words, in expressing the whole content of our faith. This is contained, I repeat, in the Symbol of Faith, which we shall discuss shortly. “Therefore, brethren, take heed and hold fast the traditions which you are now receiving, and inscribe them upon the breadth of your hearts.” Saint Cyril is telling his catechumens: Take heed, brethren, and hold fast to the traditions.

By “traditions,” he means the things that we, as the Church, hand down to you, and which you are now receiving. “Which you are now receiving”—the traditions you are receiving at this very moment. Take heed. It is as though I were saying to you: Take heed, my brethren, to what I am telling you. Hold fast to it, receive it, and inscribe all of it upon the breadth of your hearts. For what do we gain, and how are we benefited, if we learn these things as a professor of theology might learn them, but they do not shape who we are? Does Christianity mean merely acquiring some superficial knowledge, or even possessing a bare, abstract faith? No. The Christian himself must become, so to speak, an illustrated book of the faith—illustrated because every passing day paints new images within it: beautiful images, holy images. Other people should be able to look upon the believer as an illustrated book. They should be able to open each page and see there the life of this saintly person, this human being, this believer. Can you imagine what that would be like? Does not the Apostle Paul himself say that you are an epistle of Christ, known and read

—recognized and read—by all people? You yourselves are that epistle. Paul would send a written epistle, but what was such an epistle? A piece of parchment covered with letters. His hearers, the recipients of his epistles, had themselves to be transformed. They had to become a recognizable epistle, an epistle of Christ, studied and read by many. So Saint Cyril says here: Take heed. Let other people see, upon the breadth of your hearts, everything I teach you and everything you receive—the faith itself. This is a very beautiful expression, taken from Proverbs 7:3.

Let people read your faith upon the breadth of your hearts. This is a great thing. Do you know how greatly other people are strengthened when they see a person of faith? Faith is contagious, just as unbelief is contagious. When someone sees unbelief, he is not helped toward faith. But when he sees a person of faith, he too is drawn toward faith. How can I put it? We support one another. Take a single harvested stalk of grain and try to stand it upright. It cannot stand on its own. But make a sheaf from many such harvested stalks, each of which is unstable by itself. Then that sheaf...

That whole sheaf stands upright. Believers are like this. When there are people of faith, together they form the sheaf. Beside them, even those who would not otherwise have been very ready to believe can stand firm and upright in faith. For not all people are made the same. Not everyone has the same abilities. God knows this. God is just, and He will judge each person according to his abilities. That is not where the problem lies. The question is: What abilities do I have? Could it be that I sometimes want to underestimate my own abilities? Listen carefully. Perhaps I want to underestimate them and say, “I cannot attain to this.”

Have you tried? Could it be that, deep down, you simply do not want to attain it, rather than truly being unable to? This is very important—extremely important. There are people who do not want to study Holy Scripture. They do not want to advance any further simply because they do not want to, not because they cannot. Yet what do they say? They do not say, “I do not want to.” They say, “I cannot.” That is the problem—not how God will judge them. That is another matter; it belongs to Him. God is just. As Saint Cyril says here, some people are intelligent, while others have limited understanding and cannot grasp things very readily. But this does not mean that a person of limited understanding will be lost. That would be tragic. Each person has a certain capacity for understanding

and, my dear friends, what that person can comprehend corresponds to that capacity. This means that we must surround such a person with love, so that he may learn and be saved—to the extent that he is able. Let me give you a small example. An elderly grandmother came to me recently—not today, but some time ago. She was very old indeed, more than ninety years old, and of course she had never learned to read. As we know, older people, at least in Greece, often did not have the opportunity to receive an education. I asked her, “Grandmother, do you pray?” She said, “I do.” I asked, “What do you say?” She replied, “Holy...” Now listen: “Holy God, Holy Weather, Holy Death.”

Did you hear that? “Holy God, Holy Weather.” She had never been able to understand the word “Mighty.” You know, when we cannot see a word written down and do not know how to read, we can easily hear it incorrectly. So instead of “Mighty,” she said “Weather”: “Holy Weather.” Then, instead of saying “Holy Immortal,” she said, “Holy Death.” Do you understand? Now tell me, what was I supposed to correct? What could we correct in her? At that moment I remembered a well-known story. Once, a bishop met a simple man on an island and taught him how to pray. The bishop then departed by ship. But the man, who had previously been saying the prayer incorrectly, forgot the correction. He used to pray, “My God, do not have mercy on me; my God, do not have mercy on me.”

Those were the words he spoke, but what he meant in his heart was, “My God, have mercy on me.” He did not know how to read. Then he forgot how the bishop had corrected the prayer. When the bishop’s boat had moved away, the man called out from the shore, “Master, how did you tell me to say it?” And he began walking upon the sea to reach the boat. “I have forgotten it,” he said. “Never mind, never mind,” the bishop told him. “Say it as you used to say it.” Did you hear that? Say it as you used to say it. He possessed holiness. He said the words incorrectly and knew very little. In the same way, my dear friends, many people do not know and do not understand. Should we despise them? Should we cast them aside? That would be a great sin. They are immortal souls.

For various reasons, they did not have the opportunity in their day to learn to read. Or, as I have said again and again, perhaps they are simply not very quick to understand. What can we do? We help them as much as we can, and they learn as much as they are able. I repeat: God is just. He judges rightly and knows what each person was capable of, and He will render to each one accordingly. Thus, because not everyone has the same capacity—while some attain to the profoundest theology—not everyone can be a Saint Gregory Palamas or a Saint Maximus. Nor can everyone attain, through experience, to the immeasurable depths of spiritual experience, thought, and understanding reached by Saint Symeon the New Theologian, who, though not highly educated, had received a general education

—depths that make a person exclaim, “What is this? What an ocean lies before us!” So let us remain with simple things. It is enough that we be people of faith. This is why the Church, in a few brief words, has given us the framework of the faith, so that everyone may believe in an Orthodox manner and no one may remain outside the Orthodox faith. For the Orthodox faith is the fountain from which an Orthodox life will flow. This is not merely a literary subject on which we can afford to waste our time. From Orthodox faith, dogma, and confession must come Orthodox praxis—the active Christian life—and an Orthodox way of living. “Lest the enemy plunder the good things set before you. Let no heretic distort any of the things delivered to you.”

With reverent concern, he warns that no one should grow careless or forgetful and so be plundered by the enemy. The enemy is the devil, who often makes use of the heretic, for the heretic becomes an instrument of the devil. Therefore he says, “Let no heretic distort”—let no heretic lead you away from what has been handed down to you. It is no accident that our Church has struggled so greatly for the Orthodox faith. And, of course, the Orthodox faith begins with right interpretation.

If we interpret rightly, we will arrive at right conclusions. If we interpret wrongly, we will arrive at false conclusions. What is heresy? It is distorted interpretation. One person interprets the same passage, the same point, correctly; another interprets it incorrectly. Why does the latter interpret it incorrectly? Because he interprets it as he wants, relying chiefly on his own reasoning or on whatever suits his purposes. Fundamentally, we could say that heresy is the attempt to interpret revealed dogma by human reasoning alone. Arius fell into this error, as did all the great Christological and Trinitarian heretics—those who fell into heresy concerning both the dogma of the Holy Trinity and the dogma of the incarnation of the Son of God, that is, concerning Jesus Christ and His person. They tried to interpret these mysteries through their own reasoning. Here is a simple example—though it is not really simple but fundamental, for everyone stumbled over it: How can there be one essence and three persons? They tried to understand this “How can there be?” through their own reasoning. According to Aristotle, however many persons there are, there are that many essences. But why should I use Aristotle here? Is it necessary for me to use Aristotle?

Must I use philosophy in order to understand this? Once I use philosophy, which is a product of human reasoning, I will fall into heresy. Then all the questions of “how” and “what” begin, as people try to justify whatever human reasoning is able to comprehend. This is called heresy. This mystery has been revealed to us, and we must receive it as revelation. The only thing I can examine is how I may understand that it is incomprehensible. What does Saint John of Damascus say? He says, “This too can be understood.” Everything concerning God is beyond comprehension, and the one thing we can understand is that God is incomprehensible.

We can understand only that God is beyond the capacity of the human mind. We cannot comprehend Him. Therefore, whatever we know is only what has been revealed to us—nothing else. For this reason, a person must take care not to stray into false interpretation. He must also be watchful, lest in a moment of spiritual or mental carelessness the enemy plunder him. “It is a great act of faith to place the silver in the bank, as we have now done; but God will require from you an account of the deposit entrusted to you.” What does this mean? “It is a great act of faith to place the silver in the bank,” which is what we have now done. Who does “we” mean? I, Cyril,

am your catechist, and I am depositing these teachings with you. I am doing nothing other than placing the silver in the bank. Now God will require from you an account of the deposit entrusted to you. You know, the Apostle Paul also uses this word, “deposit,” when writing to Timothy. He tells him to guard the deposit. The deposit is the faithful preservation of the teaching—or teachings—that have been handed down, with the understanding that they must in turn be rendered back intact. The holy Apostle Paul says to Timothy, “O Timothy, guard the deposit entrusted to you,” keeping it until the appearing of the Lord.

The same thing, my dear friends, is said to us when we are ordained. Do you know what the greatest deposit entrusted to us is? You would never guess. What is it? The newly ordained priest crosses his hands, placing his right hand above the left like a throne, as Cabasilas says. After the consecration of the Precious Gifts, the bishop places the consecrated holy artos upon the priest’s right palm, which rests crosswise over his left palm. Thus the priest’s hands form the shape of the Cross, as I have shown you. And the bishop says to him, “Receive

this deposit entrusted to you.” Receive this deposit, and guard it until the Second Coming of Christ. At that moment he receives into his hands the Great Deposit: the Body of Christ, or the Church. Listen—the Church, because the Church is the Body of Christ. What is the Church? The Body of Christ. But the Body of Christ includes both the Head and the members. You receive Christ, and you also take responsibility for all the faithful who constitute the Body of Christ. Do you understand what all this means? It is awe-inspiring—truly awe-inspiring. For quite some time the man

being ordained to the priesthood stands behind the Holy Altar, holding the holy artos after the consecration of the Precious Gifts, until the clergy receive Holy Communion within the sanctuary. This lasts for some time, and he is afraid that it might fall from his hands. You may ask, “How could that happen?” You would understand if you experienced it. How could it fall? Something comes over you, just as when you stand in a very high place and approach the very edge: you feel that you might fall, or as though something were telling you, “Fall.” In the same way, bearing the weight of this responsibility, you say, “My God, how am I to hold this?” It is overwhelming. I tell you truthfully, it is overwhelming, but

Many times, however, we stop at that alone, without understanding what it truly is. It is the Church that we must uphold. This is a weighty task, an exceedingly weighty task. How can anyone uphold the Church? I would say that, in a certain sense, every clergyman must uphold the whole Church. For every clergyman, when he is ordained, holds the entire Lamb—the whole Church. Of course, I hold Christ, and I am held by Christ. As I am, I receive Christ and abide in Christ. As Christ says, “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him.” I abide in Him, and He abides in me.

That is how it is. I hold Christ, and He holds me. If Christ did not hold me, how could I hold Christ? Just think of it. Through all this, I want to show you that, to some degree, the same applies here to the faith, for the faith is the deposit entrusted to us. I gave you the example of the Lamb in our ordination, but Saint Cyril says this to every believer: Take heed. What have I done? I have made a deposit. In the same way, my dear ones, I deposit with you everything I have told you. Now God will ask you to give an account of the deposit entrusted to you. He will ask it of you; He will require it. “God will require from you an account of the deposit entrusted to you.”

“I charge you, as the Apostle says, before God, who gives life to all things, and before Christ Jesus, who bore witness to the good confession before Pontius Pilate, to keep this faith which has been handed down to you spotless.” Do you know what “I charge you” means? It means, “I put you under oath.” I adjure you—I solemnly charge you—to preserve the faith, he says. The Apostle Paul says this, and Saint Cyril uses the same words. Keep the faith spotless, without blemish or stain, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ. In other words, until the day each person dies, he must preserve this faith spotless. I received it, and I hand it on.

Some people, especially those who acquire a certain education, imagine it is clever to be original and to say strange and fanciful things. The Fathers remain immortal in the memory of the Church. Yet the Fathers of our Church did not seek novelty. What they received, they handed on; precisely there lies their glory. Their intelligence was not hindered by receiving and handing on the faith. The worth of the Apostles likewise lies in the fact that they received and handed on. What does the Apostle Paul say? “What I received, this I also hand on to you.” “I hand on to you that, on the night when the Lord was betrayed, He took bread,” and so forth. What was he saying? “I hand on to you what I myself received.”

There he is speaking about the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist. “A treasure of life is now being entrusted to you, and at His appearing the Master will ask for the deposit entrusted to you.” A treasure of life has now been handed on to you, and when He returns—at His appearing, when He comes again—the Master will ask for the deposit entrusted to you. Do you see what is now being handed on to you? A treasure of life. Why? Because the faith truly is a treasure of life, since from it, as I have told you, flow right praxis—the active Christian life—and the right way of living.

“This deposit He will reveal in His own appointed times: He who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone possesses immortality and dwells in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see; to Him be glory, honor, and dominion unto the ages of ages. Amen.” Here, my dear ones, ends Saint Cyril’s Fifth Catechetical Lecture, which concerns faith. It has, however, an appendix containing a Symbol of Faith. It bears the title “The Jerusalem Creed,” and I shall read it to you: “The Holy and Apostolic Faith, handed down by promise to those preparing for illumination.”

Our Holy and Apostolic Faith—that is, the faith handed down by the Apostles, from Christ through the Apostles—is called the Apostolic Faith. For this reason the Church is called the Apostolic Church. It is the Church founded by Christ and handed down to us through the Apostles. That is why it is called Apostolic, as we say, “In one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church.” This text was given so that those preparing for illumination could learn it by heart. It is therefore a strange thing when someone who is going to baptize a child as sponsor does not know the Symbol of Faith. It is unthinkable. Do not dare to do such a thing, my dear ones. At the very least, it is shameful—truly shameful.

It is unthinkable for someone to go and serve as sponsor at a Baptism without knowing the Symbol of Faith. Worse still, we have now resigned ourselves to this ignorance and accepted it as normal, so the priest recites the Symbol of Faith instead—even though some sponsors do know it. “But I do not know it,” someone says. So, to avoid any further comment, the priest recites the Symbol of Faith. It is unthinkable. Now listen: “We believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible.” The second article says: “And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Only-begotten, begotten of the Father, true God before all ages, through whom all things were made.” Then comes the third article.

You may say to me, “That is already different from the Creed I know.” Precisely; that is why I read it to you. My dear ones, the Church was compelled to formulate what are called Symbols of Faith, or creeds. Do you know what a symbol is? To begin with, the theological meaning of the word “symbol” is still discussed to this day. Various interpretations have been offered concerning exactly what a symbol is. Judging from its actual use, however, we could say that it is an official, concise exposition of the Christian faith.

An official, concise exposition of the Christian faith—of the faith. As I told you, there are many interpretations of the word “symbol.” I shall give you one. In earlier times, when two people wished to correspond without any possibility that their messages might be falsified along the way—for there were no postal services then, and letters were carried by individuals—they did the following. Before parting, the two people took a cylindrical piece of wood and cut it in a particular way, dividing it in two. They cut it rather as modern keys are cut, especially Yale keys, which have unusual notches. In this way, they cut notches into the wood.

The two pieces had to fit together, matching along the notches where the wood had been cut. One person kept one piece, and the other kept the second. When one of them sent a letter, he sent his piece of wood along with it. The recipient would take that piece, place it against his own, and see whether the two corresponded—whether they fitted together. In theology, this is also called comparison: I compare one thing with another. Do they fit together? Yes, they do. When the pieces matched, the recipient could say, “The bearer of the letter is genuine, and the letter is authentic,” and so forth. It was therefore a way of verifying a letter’s authenticity. According to one interpretation, then, it is called a symbol because it demonstrates...

...the authenticity of the faith. If you recite the Creed, and a Finn recites the Creed, and a resident of Zaire recites the Creed—the Symbol of Faith—this shows that each is Orthodox. What are you? A Christian? What kind of Christian? Recite the Symbol of Faith, so that I may judge what you are. A Millenarian does not recite the Symbol of Faith. If you recite it to him, at some point in the Creed he will tell you, “Ah, no, it does not say that.”

So then, because of the presence of heretics—and heretics have been present throughout the centuries of the faith—the Church acted accordingly. You may ask me, “Is there any Symbol of Faith in Holy Scripture, in the New Testament?” Certainly, certainly. Where is it? Pay attention. The Ethiopian says to Philip, “What prevents me from being baptized?” “Nothing prevents you from being baptized,” Philip tells him.

You must confess and believe that Jesus is the Son of God. “I believe that Jesus is the Son of God.” Notice the wording: “I believe Him to be”—with “to be” in the infinitive—“the Son of God.” Then Philip went down and baptized him. What do we ourselves do with the Symbol of Faith when we are baptized? We confess our faith. As you understand, my dear ones, this matter of faith is utterly fundamental. For this reason, from very early on, when heretics appeared and began to challenge Jesus Christ, His person, the Holy Spirit, and so forth, our Church gradually began...

...to expand this Symbol of Faith beyond that shortest confession of Orthodox belief. In this way, the Church could be assured that the person being baptized accepted all the doctrines of the faith. Three principal Symbols of Faith have been preserved as the inheritance of all Christians from before the division of the Church into East and West, and before Protestantism separated from Rome in the West. These are the Apostles’ Creed, or Jerusalem Creed—the one I read to you—the Athanasian Creed, which is included in the Apostoliki Diakonia edition of the Horologion, on its opening pages, and the Creed of Nicaea.

The Creed of Nicaea began to take definitive form at the First Ecumenical Council and was subsequently completed. In the end, it was the Nicene Symbol of Faith, the Creed familiar to us, that remained in use. We recite it in the Divine Liturgy. Do you know why? Because in this way we proclaim our Orthodox faith, not only before the congregation but also before God: This is how I believe in You. I believe in You, and I confess my Orthodox faith before You. This Orthodox confession of faith is therefore of fundamental importance, my dear ones.

We must take the greatest care over it. Within these few lines are what we might call the basic foundations of our faith. Do you know the structure of Saint Cyril’s catechetical lectures? By now you will have understood that they are essentially an interpretation of the Symbol of Faith. In the Fifth Catechetical Lecture, Saint Cyril explains the verb “I believe,” which is understood to be repeated in every article. It is implicit in each one. Further on—God willing, next year, since today we are concluding our lessons and topics—he turns to “I believe in one God,” and speaks about God.

The Symbol of Faith. Before we finish, since the hour is already late, I would like to dwell on just one point in the Symbol of Faith—only one. It is the eleventh article, which says, “And in the resurrection of the flesh.” The Nicene Symbol of Faith says, “I look for the resurrection of the dead”—I await the resurrection of the dead. It does not include the word “flesh,” because this is understood. Yet I believe that omission has proved a disadvantage. Do you know why? In what respect? Because we have lost a great deal from our faith.

The wording adopted in the Symbol of Faith was correct, but what has happened to us? Listen to what has happened, my dear ones. We no longer readily understand that, since the soul is immortal and does not die, the resurrection spoken of must refer to the body. When we say, “I look for the resurrection of the dead,” we imagine a resurrection of souls. What resurrection of souls? It is the resurrection of bodies. This mistaken idea has now taken root among our people. The Jerusalem Creed, however, tells us, “And in the resurrection of the flesh”—in the resurrection of the body. This is very significant. With these words, my dear ones, we conclude the Fifth Catechetical Lecture, about which I have offered you these few remarks. We also conclude this year’s series of topics, which, with God’s help...

...we were counted worthy to examine. This is, of course, the second year in which we have been studying Saint Cyril, and we are still only at the Fifth Catechetical Lecture. There are twenty-four in all, God willing. This means that there is still much bread—the Word of God—for us to eat, so that we may grow in the faith and in the spiritual life.

Εάν ερμηνεύσουμε ορθά, ορθά πράγματα θα βγάλουμε. Εάν ερμηνεύσουμε στραβά, στραβά πράγματα θα βγάλουμε. Τι θα πει η αίρεσις; Θα πει στραβή ερμηνεία. Το ίδιο χωρίο, το ίδιο σημείο, το ερμηνεύει ο ένας ορθά, ο άλλος το ερμηνεύει στραβά. Γιατί το ερμηνεύει στραβά εκείνος που θέλει έτσι να το ερμηνεύει; Διότι χρησιμοποιεί κυρίως τη λογική του ή εκείνο που τον συμφέρει. Βασικά θα λέγαμε ότι αίρεσις είναι η λογική ερμηνεία του δόγματος, αποκαλύψεως ερμηνεία του δόγματος. Ο Άρειος σ' αυτό το λάθος έπεσε, όπως και όλη η μεγάλη χριστολογική αιρετική τριαδική αιρετική δηλαδή, που έπεσαν ως αιρετικοί τόσο στο δόγμα της Αγίας Τριάδος όσο και στο δόγμα της ενανθρωπήσεως του Υιού του Θεού, δηλαδή στον Ιησού Χριστό, στο πρόσωπό Του. Προσπάθησαν να ερμηνεύσουν με τη λογική τους. Ένα πρόχειρο παράδειγμα, και να το ξέρετε, δεν είναι πρόχειρο, είναι θεμελιώδες, αλλά είναι πάνω σε αυτό όλοι σκόνταψαν, ότι πώς μπορούμε να έχουμε μία ουσία και τρία πρόσωπα. Και εδώ το «πώς μπορούμε να έχουμε» προσπάθησαν να το καταλάβουν με τη λογική τους. Διότι κατά τον Αριστοτέλη έχουμε όσα πρόσωπα και τόσες ουσίες. Αλλά γιατί θα χρησιμοποιήσω εγώ τον Αριστοτέλη; Είναι ανάγκη να χρησιμοποιήσω τον Αριστοτέλη;
