Summary

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem teaches that faith is not merely belief in God's existence but trust in His words, without which no one can please Him. Faith and works cannot be separated, because faith is itself an active offering that sustains obedience, chastity, virtue, and hope for God's eternal reward. True prudence is more than intelligence: as shown by Joseph and Daniel, it arises from faith, a pure heart, and divine illumination, whereas worldly prudence remains partial and relative.

Beloved, we are now in the fifth catechetical lecture of Saint Cyril, which concerns the subject of faith, as you will remember from last time.

We begin with the fourth paragraph.

“Today’s reading also calls us to true faith, showing us the way in which we too must please God. For it says that without faith it is impossible to please Him.”

You remember the passage that Saint Cyril placed at the beginning: “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen,” and so forth. This passage, he says, already opens the way for us to understand how we can please God. For without faith, it is impossible for anyone to please God. On this subject, we should consider this: in what sense, and why, do we please God when we believe, but fail to please Him when we do not believe?

As I told you last time, faith has many aspects. One aspect is believing what God says. What does it mean to believe? Pay attention: I am not speaking of believing that God exists, but of believing what God says. And we know that humanity began its preparation in faith in the time of Adam.

What is most astonishing is that God continues to insist upon this same way of approaching Him even to this day. Of course, faith will no longer exist in the Kingdom of God, because there we shall possess the things whose existence we now believe in. And as for the things we now hope to enjoy, hope itself will also pass away tomorrow, because we shall then be enjoying what we hope for today. Faith, then, is something that remains as long as man lives this present life. Faith belongs to the present age.

Why, then, does God introduce faith? We could give many answers, but I shall mention only two. First, what God commands cannot be fully understood by the limited human mind and must therefore be believed. In the same way, a small child cannot receive many explanations from his parents when they tell him something, because his understanding is limited. The child must therefore believe what his parents tell him. Later, he will understand.

For now, however, he cannot understand, and so faith must necessarily enter in. The second reason—and I think it is the more important one—is that faith is a kind of test: do you trust God in what He tells you? As we shall see a little further on, Saint Cyril beautifully says that the person who believes—that is, who trusts—shows that he loves. And if he loves, then he also has communion with God. Thus faith is not something arbitrarily inserted into our life, but something that...

tests man’s trust in God and his love for God. Faith, therefore, is something that puts these things to the test. Would you like to see how ancient faith is, and how God never enters into communion with His creatures without setting at least one small condition—a small and easy condition for them to fulfill? That condition will always be grounded in faith. Look: God gave our first parents not only the earth, but also Paradise, a place cultivated with exceptional care.

Paradise was on the earth. The whole earth was not Paradise; rather, Paradise had defined boundaries and occupied a particular place. God formed Adam by taking dust from the earth. He formed him from the earth, not from Paradise. And after forming him from the earth, He brought him into Paradise. Pay attention: He brought man into Paradise, just as He later drove him out. There in Paradise, then, God said to him, “All these things are yours.”

“On the day you taste of it, you will die.” What was that tree, that much-discussed tree? I do not wish to say much about it here, except that it was a test of what we call faith. In other words: will you trust My words? Pay attention—the subject of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil is a profound one. But I am not interpreting it now; I am simply using it as an example. God wished to see whether Adam would believe His words, and it proved that Adam did not believe the words of God. And what was worse, the consequence that followed, was that love was absent as well.

Love for God. Do you know how this is shown? First of all, they placed their faith in the words of the devil. And once the seed of doubt had been planted—that they would not die if they tasted the fruit, and that God had forbidden them to taste it out of envy—their love was also put to the test. Love, too, was tested. You know, it is a terrible thing when someone comes and tells you, “Your wife is betraying you.” What happens then? How are you tested, and in what way? Certainly, marital trust is tested, but love is tested as well. It is a terrible thing, truly terrible. A person is thrown into complete turmoil. And when, a little later, God calls Adam to account...

Adam, of course, did not ask forgiveness or do anything of the kind. He cast the blame upon God and said, “The woman whom You gave me—she gave me the fruit, and I ate.” In other words: “I am not at fault; You are at fault for giving me the woman.” It is terrible, my beloved. This reveals the absence of love. If we examine the matter, we shall see that someone who loves never speaks this way—never. This means that Adam’s faith and his love for God were put to the test. And that, after all, was what God wished to reveal—not that He did not already know. God was not ignorant of it, especially since the Lamb had been slain...

from the foundation of the world. That is, the sacrifice of Christ, the Son of God, was already within God’s plan. The Lamb signifies both the Incarnation and the sacrifice. This was so from the foundation of the world, before the world had even been created, my beloved—both the visible and the invisible world. Astonishing! In the knowledge of God there is no shadow and no ignorance. Could we say that God waits to see what happens before drawing His conclusions afterward? Certainly not. What, then, does this mean? It means that, in order for our first parents to attain Paradise—first the sensible Paradise and, later, the spiritual Paradise, as Saint John of Damascus says... Many people ask whether Paradise was spiritual or sensible. He says that it was both. From the sensible Paradise, man would...

have ascended to the spiritual Paradise, to communion with God, to communion in blessedness. It was there that he was tested. God therefore required something that would be man’s own offering. What was it? Faith: trusting what God tells you. Was that difficult? Difficult? Not at all, not at all. As you should know, faith itself is a work. Unfortunately, many people, including the Protestants, say that faith saves but works do not. Yet faith is itself a work. Saint Cyril will demonstrate this a little further on when he speaks about Abraham. For...

you can perform works without faith, but you cannot possess faith without works. It is impossible. Each is contained within the other. They cannot be separated. Faith itself is a work, and God asked this work, this effort, this offering, from our first parents. What was it? To believe. Because Adam did not believe, when Christ came into the world, He came in His human form and concealed His divine presence. He concealed it. And what does He now ask of mankind? That they believe in His name and in His person, so that they may enter the Kingdom of God. Listen: “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.”

How shall we enter the Kingdom of Heaven? Through Jesus Christ. And what does Jesus Christ now call for? The same thing that was required in the ancient Paradise: faith. God does not abandon what He asks of us. “Humanity, you missed the mark in the first Paradise. But in My abundant goodness, I repeat the opportunity: I shall open Paradise to you once again. Only take heed: I still insist upon what I asked for in the beginning.” And what was that? Faith. Faith in what, then? In God’s words concerning the tree. And faith in what now? Again, in God’s words concerning that same tree. Which tree? The tree of life. Forgive me—the same... forgive me—the tree of good and evil, the tree of life, which is...

Jesus Christ. I must believe that Jesus Christ is the incarnate Son of God. This is a great matter indeed! Faith is the entrance into our salvation. Without faith, we can do nothing. Therefore, when Saint Cyril says here that without faith it is impossible for anyone to please God—as Saint Paul the Apostle says in Hebrews, chapter 11, verse 6—this is precisely what he means: just as Adam failed to please God because he did not believe God’s words, so everyone who does not believe in Jesus Christ fails to please God. Therefore, if we truly wish to please God and to have God hear us...

we must believe in Jesus Christ. There is no other way. You may ask God for many things while leaving Christ out, but the door will not open to you, no matter how desperately you plead or how much you desire it. “My God, save me; grant me this; help me. But, You know, my God, I cannot acknowledge Jesus Christ.” Then you have nothing—nothing at all, absolutely nothing. The person of Christ is the fundamental basis of our salvation. He is, quite literally, the very foundation of salvation. That is why, my beloved, when people are dying, we sometimes hurry to hear their confession, even if it is the first confession of their entire life. They may still be conscious, or rather, may no longer even be able to speak.

How do we deal with such a situation? I ask them three or four questions. It is enough for me to receive some sign of assent, since they can no longer speak: a yes, some indication of agreement, even the opening and closing of their eyes. Let me tell you what I ask: whether they forgive those who have harmed them; whether they ask forgiveness of those whom they have harmed; whether they repent of their sins, whatever those sins may be. What else can I ask or say at such a moment? The person is dying. I ask whether they repent of their sins and whether they believe that Jesus Christ is God and man.

That last question is absolutely fundamental. Remember, please, Philip catechizing the eunuch in his chariot. The eunuch said, “Look, here is water. What prevents me from being baptized?” Philip replied, “Nothing prevents you, if you confess that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.”

That is, that He is God. Then nothing prevents you from being baptized. “I believe,” he said, “that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.” And they came down from the chariot, and Philip baptized him.

You see, then, that faith in Jesus Christ, faith in the divine and human nature of Christ, is truly the foundation. But let us pay close attention.

“For when will a man be eager to serve God if he does not believe that God rewards those who serve Him? When will a maiden preserve her virginity, and when will a young man live chastely, if they do not believe that there is an unfading crown for purity? Faith is the eye that illumines every conscience and gives rise to understanding.” For the Prophet says, “Unless you believe, neither will you understand.” When, he asks, will a person be able to bear any spiritual fruit if he has no faith, no trust that God will give him His Kingdom and grant him a reward? We have already examined the meaning of reward, as you will remember. And here Saint Cyril gives us two very fine examples.

When will a maiden preserve her virginity, and when will a young man remain chaste, if they do not believe that an unfading and truly eternal crown awaits them? To preserve one’s virginity is a very serious matter. You know, preserving virginity and living chastely are essentially the same thing. There may be a slight distinction, but in essence they are the same. When, then, will a young man undertake the struggle for chastity until the day of his wedding, for example, if he does not believe that this will receive a reward and a crown from God? And, taking this example further, let me explain: the visible crown is the one the young man receives

at the time of his wedding. Indeed, from this very element, the entire Mystery of Holy Matrimony came to be called the Crowning. A person says, “I was crowned to my husband,” or, “I was crowned to my wife”; “I have been crowned.” Our mind immediately understands this to mean that the person has married and that the Mystery of Holy Matrimony has taken place. Of course, the crowns are not an essential element of the Mystery of Holy Matrimony. They are simply a sign. But what do they signify? I have told you before that, in earlier times, they were not wreaths made of artificial lemon blossoms and the like; they were actual crowns.

In a few churches in Larissa and in the surrounding villages, some of these crowns are still preserved. They are real crowns, like those worn by kings. Naturally, they were made of iron, not gold, and were placed upon the heads of the newlyweds. What are these crowns? They are crowns of glory for the chastity that the two people being married have preserved until the moment of their wedding. But what a mockery this can become! What a mockery! Each person knows whether they are receiving those crowns worthily at that moment, and whether they have lived immorally before their wedding. Truly, this is a matter worthy of many tears. Yet my point is this: when will a young person remain pure and chaste until marriage?

When that person believes in a crowning. The crowning at the wedding is visible, as we can see. And today everyone is crowned, whether they have practiced self-restraint or not. But do not imagine that this visible act is all that matters; many things are done for the sake of appearances. It would be very strange to say to someone, “I will not place a crown upon you because I know that you fell into immorality before your wedding.” That would create a very ugly and confusing situation. And so the Church has established that the crowning is performed as usual. But do not deceive yourselves. God above either crowns a person or does not. God, who knows every heart and knows all things, judges each person according to their worthiness.

How, then, will I believe that I shall receive honor from God? Forgive me—how will I remain chaste unless I believe that I shall receive honor from God? We read in chapter 14 of the Apocalypse: “And those who follow Him, the 144,000, are virgins.” And so that no one might think this virginity is meant figuratively, it says, “These are they who were not defiled with women.” It states this clearly. You will remember that we examined this when studying the Apocalypse. Who, I ask you, would do this unless he believed that he would truly become a follower of Jesus Christ and would always be with Christ wherever He is?

With Him in martyrdom, throughout history, and in glory, in His Kingdom. You see, then, that virtue is a matter of faith. I would like to broaden this point. Somewhere in the Gospels, Christ says, “I have told you earthly things and you do not believe. How can I tell you heavenly things and expect you to believe?” What are these earthly things, my beloved? They are the most self-evident truths of morality.

Morality is plainly evident. Take, for example, the Ten Commandments: Honor your father and your mother. Do not steal, do not kill, do not act unjustly, do not commit adultery, and so forth. My beloved, do these laws need proof in order to be established? Certainly not. Why? Because it is inherent in human nature to sense that these commandments are fitting if we are to live as human beings. It is entirely natural. And yet these laws, though self-evident and seemingly in no need of any special faith, are still a matter of faith—believe me. Do you believe that they are a matter of faith? Let me give you a small example.

Who has not seen hashish and its effects? And yet—

And yet, although we have all seen people who take drugs, at least to some extent, there are still people who take them, and their number is even increasing. Why do they take drugs when they know where drug addiction leads? Let me tell you why: they do not believe that they themselves will end up where those others have ended up. Let me give you a more tangible example: alcohol. Who has not seen a person drunk? And who has not seen the effects of drunkenness upon that person’s behavior and entire life?

Who has not seen this? All of us have, more or less. Why, then, do some people become alcoholics? Because they do not believe that the same thing will happen to them. What did I say? They do not believe—yes. You know, when I repeat something that has brought suffering upon someone else, I possess a kind of self-confidence that tells me I will never reach that point. In other words, I do not believe. Believe me, faith is necessary even in the most earthly and self-evident matters. I repeat what Christ said: “I tell you earthly things, and you do not believe.” That is precisely what we are discussing. How, then, could He tell us heavenly things? Therefore, the moral laws and the virtues need faith as their foundation—not only faith

in eternal crowns, but faith concerning this present life as well, so that we may live well. Suppose someone says to a young man, “My child, be careful with alcohol. What kind of family will you have? Your children will hate you. They will say things to you that you would be ashamed to hear from a stranger, yet your own children will say them. Would you like that? You will lose all respect in the eyes of your children. Why, then, do you drink?” And yet he continues to drink; he does not believe it. It is a mystery. Saint Cyril then gives us a concise saying.

“Faith is the eye that illumines every conscience and gives rise to understanding,” for the Prophet says, “Unless you believe, neither will you understand.” What does this mean?

Faith is the illuminating eye of every conscience, and it produces understanding. Faith, then, is an eye that illumines every conscience. What does “an illuminating eye” mean? It means that faith illumines the conscience. As you know, we have what we might call two kinds of consciousness—indeed, there are many kinds.

Well, consciousness is one, but it has many aspects. That is what I mean. I will consider two of them: moral consciousness and cognitive consciousness. What are these? Moral consciousness, my beloved, is that which tells us whether we are observing the moral laws. Faith illumines this moral consciousness, as we have already been saying, because I will observe the moral law only if I believe. This is why faith is the eye that illumines the moral consciousness. But faith is also the eye that illumines cognitive consciousness. What is cognitive consciousness? It concerns knowledge, both religious and secular. Let us begin with secular knowledge. When could I ever learn many things, as we said last time, if I had no faith in my teachers and in books? I could never acquire a great body of knowledge if, lacking faith, I had to test every single thing I learned each time: “Let me see whether this is really so. Let me see whether that is true.” When would I ever learn all that I needed to learn?

I rely on the trustworthiness of books, my professors, and my teachers, and so I too become wise. Thus faith truly is the illuminating eye of our consciousness as it seeks knowledge. But how will I come to know who God is? By having faith. If I have no faith, I become an agnostic and say, “I know nothing. I am ignorant of everything; I know nothing.” Why do I say that I know nothing? Because I have no faith. When will I know God—what God does, what God wills, who God is, what His attributes are, and how He acts? I will learn all these things if I have faith.

And so I learn that God is Triune; that the second Person of the Holy Trinity became man; that Jesus Christ died and rose again; that He will return to the world; and that there will be a resurrection of the dead. Where does all this knowledge—what we might call knowledge of the things of God—come from? From faith. For I must believe these things in order to know them. Indeed, I will say it once again: faith is the illuminating eye of consciousness. But it also gives rise to understanding: “It produces understanding.” Saint Cyril then quotes something from the Prophet Isaiah, chapter 7, verse 9.

“If you do not believe, neither shall you understand.” If you do not believe, you will understand nothing; that is, you will have no prudence. Prudence, as you know, has a broad meaning. It means what we ordinarily call good judgment, but it can also mean knowledge. It certainly carries both these meanings, if not more. Unless a person believes, he cannot become prudent. Let us take the word in its ordinary sense: a prudent person. Such a person is a treasure, as you know. Prudence is a true treasure. Blessed is the person who possesses it. When we see that someone has no prudence, we entrust nothing to him. And this applies to every area of life.

If a man has no prudence, what can you entrust to him? But when he does have prudence… Joseph, as you know, had great prudence—Joseph, the son of Jacob, who was sold by his brothers into Egypt. Daniel and the Three Holy Youths also had great prudence. Prudence is often identified with wisdom, and wisdom with prudence. This is not wisdom as the Greeks understood it, merely as a product of the intellect, but wisdom as the fruit of praxis, the active ascetic life. Among the Hebrews, wisdom is often something practical rather than intellectual. It is what we call prudence: being a person of good judgment.

Those whom I have just mentioned possessed very great prudence indeed. Let me remind you of that wonderful example of Daniel’s prudence. The Jews had condemned the most pure Susanna. Two elders had accused her after they tried to make her sin with them and she refused. And those men, if you please, were also judges! In order to save themselves, they told her, “We will accuse you and say that we saw you with another man.” It was blackmail: they threatened her unless she agreed to lie with them. She refused, of course. In the end she was brought before the court, and they themselves sat in judgment over her.

So they condemned her and were taking her away to be stoned. On the way they encountered Daniel—and Daniel, if you please, was only an adolescent, a young man. What a beautiful thing it is to expect prudence from the young, from adolescents! What a beautiful thing! Today we put on badges, chains, and trinkets to adorn ourselves. Prudence is an adornment. Daniel asked, “Where are you going?” They replied, “We are going to carry out her sentence, because she was caught committing adultery.” “How was the trial conducted?” “Well,” they said, “this happened, and they judged the case in such and such a way.” “Very well, turn back. Go back.” The young Daniel sent the judges outside. He brought one of them in and said, “Tell me:

Did you see her committing adultery?” He replied, “In the garden, beneath a tree.” “What kind of tree was it? A pine, a fir? What was it—a mastic tree, a shrub? What was it?” “It was a mastic tree,” he answered. “Very well, go outside.”

“You old adulterer! You old adulterer,” Daniel said. “Now I will deal with you. Bring in the other one.” Then he asked him, “Tell me, under what tree did you see her sinning?” “Under a holm oak,” he replied. A contradiction! These are the conflicting details that judges investigate and uncover. And so, my dear friends, it was revealed who had devised that vile accusation. What a dreadful thing! The judges themselves…

were the accusers; there were no other witnesses. They themselves were witnesses, accusers, and judges—and they themselves were guilty. Then Daniel turned to everyone and said, “Have you no sense? Have you no prudence? Do you judge and condemn someone so readily?”

Daniel was an adolescent—I have now said it for the third time. My dear friends, it is a great thing to possess prudence, to have discernment. Pay attention: this is not mere intelligence. Prudence goes beyond that. It is partly the fruit of intelligence, but not of intelligence alone. Prudence is also the fruit of a pure heart,

of faith, and of illumination from God.

Saint Cyril tells us here that you cannot possess prudence without faith. You may say to me, “But we meet people who have no faith and yet possess prudence.” Not complete prudence. And lest you think I would leave that unanswered, let me explain. Christ praised the prudence of the unjust steward, but He praised it because it was worldly and relative. You know the familiar parable. A master learned that one of his stewards was misusing his property, and he was preparing to dismiss him. The steward learned of this and, before he was dismissed, said, “I am ashamed to beg, and I am unable to dig.”

“I cannot dig; I cannot now go and work as a laborer. And once I lose my wages, I cannot go out begging.” So he went to his master’s debtors and said, “How much do you owe my master? A hundred measures of wheat? Write on the note that you owe eighty. How much oil do you owe? That much? Write down less.” Why did he do this? My dear friends, he did it so that, once his master dismissed him, he could go to their homes and be welcomed and supported by those debtors. His master learned what he had done and praised him. What does it mean that he praised him? He was impressed that the steward had made provision for how he would live out the rest of his life. He was an unjust steward, an embezzler, but he had thought shrewdly in worldly terms. Pay attention: in worldly terms. This is what the Lord says. The Lord says that the master praised

the unjust steward. And Christ says that the sons of this age are more shrewd, more prudent, than the children of the Kingdom. What, then, is complete prudence? Complete prudence means having good judgment even in earthly matters, my brother. For example, if you see that there is inflation—forgive the example, but I will use it—and you want to build a little house, and you have had one hundred thousand drachmas since 1950 but still have not decided to build, today those one hundred thousand drachmas will not buy you even—not even—twenty thousand bricks.

The bricks have reached five drachmas and sixty-five lepta apiece. Yes, yes, you cannot build anything. Is it not prudence, in an earthly matter, to manage things wisely and accomplish something? Well then, prudence extends from earthly things to heavenly things. What is heavenly prudence? It is to build a house, however large and fine, without finally letting your heart become attached to it, but saying, “For here we have no continuing city.”

If you can say that, then you possess complete prudence. You have worldly prudence—you show good judgment in worldly matters—but you also show good judgment in spiritual matters. And who will give you this, especially the latter, except faith?

Faith.

So faith truly produces prudence, as Saint Cyril says here. It produces it; it forms and creates prudence. “Faith stops the mouths of lions,” as in the case of Daniel. Holy Scripture naturally speaks of this: “And Daniel was lifted out of the den, and no injury whatever was found upon him, because he had believed in his God.” This is a beautiful little example, a classic example. When Daniel was thrown into the lions’ den, who would not have believed, my dear friends, that the lions would tear him to pieces? Bear in mind that every day in that dreadful lions’ den in Babylon, Holy Scripture tells us, food was thrown to the lions: sheep were thrown in, and so were condemned prisoners—human beings. The lions would seize the victims in midair as they were thrown down. It is just like holding a little fish over a hungry cat. When we toss it, the fish never reaches the ground; the cat snatches it from the air. Or like a hungry dog with a bone: it catches it in midair. So the lions would seize their victims in the air. Daniel, my dear friends, remained in the lions’ den for a week. Then Habakkuk arrived with food—not the Prophet Habakkuk, by the way—

in that well-known miracle from Judea, when an angel carried him away. He had been walking in Judea—listen, in Judea. I am expanding on these things a little and giving you a little history, where otherwise we might use examples and anecdotes. Here we have wonderful illustrations drawn from Holy Scripture itself. The man was taking the midday meal to his field, to the laborers working there, when he met someone. It was an angel. The angel asked him, “Where are you taking this food?” He had bread and other provisions. “Where are you taking these things?” Habakkuk answered, “To my field.” The angel said, “Take them to Babylon, to Daniel, who is in the lions’ den.” “Lord,” he replied, “I do not even know Babylon.” It was perhaps three hundred to five hundred kilometers away. “I do not know Daniel, nor do I know the lions’ den.”

As Habakkuk was saying this, the angel seized him by the hair and, in a flash, carried him above the lions’ den. Standing over the den, Habakkuk called down, “Daniel! Daniel!” And a voice answered from below, from inside the den: “Who is it?” “I have brought you bread and food,” he said. Daniel thanked God for sending him bread and food. He had been in the den for a week, and the lions had been hungry for a week. Yet they sat there, Scripture says, like sheep. There is a beautiful troparion for the day that says the same: they were like sheep, with Daniel as their shepherd. Quietly, peacefully, they sat looking at Daniel. What was it that made—

the lions stand before Daniel like sheep? Faith. What faith? Daniel had shown the king that faith in Marduk and the other gods was false, and that the true God exists. Then those who envied him immediately cast him into the lions’ den. There is a whole story behind this, of course, and I will not tell it all at once, lest I weary you further. Daniel remained steadfast in his faith in the true God, and the true God saved him. That is faith. Many, many times, you know, we see Hades rising out of Tartarus—

stirring itself up to swallow us—when we have taken a firm stand because we believe in the truth and in God. If we are afraid, it means that our faith has wavered. If we are not afraid, then that mouth of Hades which came to swallow us proves to be a mere trifle, a plaything, and it vanishes. The Lord said, “And the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it”—against the Church, against the truth, and against the faith. They shall not prevail. This is truly a great thing. “Nothing is stronger than faith, and against this enemy we have no other weapon but faith.”

“For the enemy is a fearsome beast who cannot be seen. He sends forth many kinds of arrows and, under cover of darkness, shoots even at those who keep watch. But because the enemy is unseen, we have faith as our mighty protection,” in accordance with the Apostle’s words: “Above all, taking up the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the evil one.” “Often the devil sends a flaming arrow of desire for shameful pleasure; but faith, setting the Judgment before us, cools the nous and extinguishes the arrow.” Is there anything more dreadful, he says, than the devil, who comes to pierce our hearts with the arrows of every kind of sin and desire? And how—

will we be able to repel these arrows so that in the end they do us no harm? By taking up and raising the shield of faith, as the Apostle Paul says. He says, “With which”—that is, with this shield—“you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the evil one,” the darts he first placed in the fire and set ablaze. How will you quench them? Through faith. He even gives a little example: “But faith, setting the Judgment before us.” Here, “setting before us” means depicting it. If, within your mind, you form a vivid image of what you already believe—the Judgment. Which Judgment?

Listen to what Joseph said to his mistress when she asked him to sin with her: “How then can I do this wicked thing against my God and sin?” How, he says, can I commit this evil deed before the eyes of God? How can I do it and come to sin before my God? Listen to what Joseph said to his mistress when she asked him to sin with her: “How then can I do this wicked thing against my God and sin?” How, he says, can I commit this evil deed before the eyes of God? How can I do it and come to sin before my God?

That saved him. My dear friends, he did not appeal to his father, for his father was far away. He did not appeal to the laws of Egypt. He appealed to nothing except the remembrance of God as Judge: “God will judge me.” This was what he kept before him, though he had so many opportunities to sin. First of all, he was a slave. He was young, only twenty years old. And because he abstained from sin and refused to take part in it, he was punished with ten years in prison. Would it have been a wonder if God had not brought him out? Yet God allowed Joseph to remain in prison for ten years.

He was a slave, and he would also have enjoyed his mistress’s favor if he had sinned with her, along with many other advantages. He rejected them all. “The Judge, God, is a mighty tribunal.” In other words, Joseph believed this. Someone might say, “Where have you seen God?” His mistress could have said to him, just as a modern atheist might say, “And where have you seen God, Joseph? Where have you seen Him?” But Joseph believed, and after ten years God brought him out, at the age of thirty, and made him governor of Egypt. Do you understand what it means to go from being a prisoner to becoming governor in a matter of hours? In only a few hours, my dear friends—not even a full day—he became governor of Egypt. And if some malicious person asks—

“Why did God leave him in prison for ten years?” one could answer, “He left him in prison to protect him from the hands of Potiphar’s wife.” For if God had set him free and he had returned to his master’s house, who knows how far that frenzied, raging woman might have gone? And in the end, a human being is still human. Joseph was a young man; he might have fallen. He courageously refused the sin, and from then on God undertook to protect him. And Joseph’s protection was found inside the prison. Yes, yes—inside the prison. God had not forgotten him. He brought him out at the age of thirty, the lawful age—

at which he could hold public office. That is why God left him in prison for ten years. God is mighty and wise, my dear friends. He is also good, and He loves those who believe in Him and love Him.

“There is much to say about faith, and even if we spent the whole day recounting it, there would not be enough time.” What can we say? One day would not be enough to relate everything that concerns faith. Saint Cyril then presents Abraham as a model of faith. The subject of Abraham, my dear friends, is immense—truly immense—because Abraham is regarded as the greatest figure of faith in the Old Testament. And the trial Abraham endured was extraordinary. His faith was truly tested, and yet he stood firm as a rock of faith.

But because the subject of Abraham is so beautiful and yields so many important conclusions, I would like us to leave it for next time, God willing. For the final two minutes we have today, however, we can conclude once again that without faith, my dear friends, we can do nothing in our lives. Because faith is under attack today, because it is trampled upon and mocked, we must remain steadfast in our faith in Jesus Christ. A short while ago, as we were preparing for our discussion—

someone submitted a question. I will not answer it now, but I will read it to you so that you can hear how it is phrased. I glanced through it quickly, and its wording struck me. Many times I have received questions framed in this way. Listen. Even if those who submitted it tell me that they do not mean it this way, something nevertheless lies beneath the surface. What is it? A certain unbelief. Listen: “Could you enlighten us about Christ’s life between the ages of twelve and thirty? Did He undertake any preparation for His work? Perhaps He studied or became acquainted with some philosophical school of thought, and so forth? There is a lack of information on this subject, and various opinions are expressed.” Very often—

these opinions are disparaging toward the work of Christ. My dear friends, one could simply have asked the first part: “Tell us where Christ was between the ages of twelve and thirty, because people outside the Church say this or that.” But here, this unbelief lies beneath the surface. Did He perhaps study at some school of philosophy? In other words, did He need to be trained? If I believe that Jesus Christ is God incarnate, does He need training? Does He need training? And although so many of us are Christians and believe in Jesus Christ, my dear friends, unbelief nevertheless lurks within our subconscious. It is both strange and contradictory, if you will. How can you say that you believe in Jesus Christ while entertaining thoughts about where He might have studied and from whom He might have received this or that knowledge? My greatest bewilderment concerns the theological writings of our most honorable university professors of theology. From what I have read, some of their formulations are such that they cast doubt upon the divine-human nature of Jesus Christ. It is astonishing. We must never doubt the divine-human person of Christ. This is the first step of our faith.

Σε μερικούς ναούς της Λαρίσης, σε εκκλησίες, σε χωριά, σώζονται αυτοί ακόμη οι στέφανοι. Στέμματα πραγματικά, σαν και αυτά που έβαζαν οι βασιλείς. Φυσικά ήταν σιδερένια αυτά, δεν ήταν από χρυσάφι, και έμπαιναν πάνω στα κεφάλια των νεονύμφων. Τι είναι αυτά τα στέφανα; Στέφανα, στέμματα δηλαδή, δόξης για την σωφροσύνη που εκράτησαν μέχρι αυτή τη στιγμή του γάμου οι δύο αυτοί, λέει, που παντρεύονται. Αλλά τι παρωδία! Παρωδία, τι παρωδία! Ο καθένας θα καταλάβει αν παίρνει με την αξία του αυτά τα στεφάνια εκείνη την ώρα και αν προηγουμένως δεν έχει ασελγήσει στη ζωή του. Πραγματικά δηλαδή είναι πολλών δακρύων άξιον το θέμα. Ωστόσο, θέλω να σας πω ότι πότε θα μείνει αγνός και καθαρός ο νέος μέχρι το γάμο του;

Πώς λοιπόν εγώ θα πιστέψω ότι θα έχω τιμή από τον Θεό; Συγγνώμη, πώς θα μείνω σώφρων, εάν δεν πιστέψω ότι θα έχω τιμή από τον Θεό; Διαβάζομε στο 14 της Αποκαλύψεως: «Και αυτοί που Τον ακολουθούν, οι 144.000, παρθένοι γαρ εισί». Και για να μην νομιστεί ότι είναι μεταφορική αυτή η έννοια της παρθενίας, λέγει: «Οι οποίοι μετά γυναικών δεν εμολύνθησαν». Σαφώς το λέγει. Αυτό το ενθυμείστε που το αναλύσαμε στο βιβλίο της Αποκαλύψεως. Πότε, παρακαλώ, θα το κάνει κανείς αυτό, εάν δεν πιστέψει ότι θα γίνει πράγματι ο ακόλουθος του Ιησού Χριστού και θα είναι πάντοτε με τον Χριστό, όπου Εκείνος είναι;

Κι όμως, ενώ όλοι έχουμε δει έναν άνθρωπο που παίρνει ναρκωτικά, υπάρχουν άνθρωποι — όλοι έχουμε δει, λίγο-πολύ — εντούτοις υπάρχουν άνθρωποι, και αυξάνει μάλιστα ο αριθμός, που παίρνουν ναρκωτικά. Αυτοί γιατί παίρνουν ναρκωτικά, αφού ξέρουν πού οι ναρκομανείς καταλήγουν; Να σας πω γιατί το κάνουν αυτό. Δεν πιστεύουν ότι θα φτάσουν εκεί που έφτασε αυτός. Να πάρω ένα πιο απτό παράδειγμα, το θέμα του οινοπνεύματος. Ποιος δεν έχει δει μέθη στον άνθρωπο και ποιος δεν έχει δει τα αποτελέσματα του μεθυσιού του και της συμπεριφοράς του και της ζωής του;

«Οφθαλμός πάσης συνειδήσεως φωτιστικός εστίν η πίστις και συνέσεως εμποιητικός», λέγει γαρ ο προφήτης, «και αν μη πιστεύσητε, ουδέ μη συνήτε». Τι σημαίνει τούτο;

Εεεε... Η συνείδηση είναι μία, αλλά έχει πολλές πτυχές. Αυτό θέλω να πω. Εγώ θα πάρω δύο. Θα πάρω την ηθική συνείδηση και την γνωστική συνείδηση. Τι είναι η ηθική και τι είναι η γνωστική συνείδηση; Η ηθική συνείδηση, αγαπητοί μου, είναι εκείνη η οποία μας πληροφορεί κατά πόσο εφαρμόζομε τους ηθικούς νόμους. Η πίστη λοιπόν είναι φωτιστική αυτής της ηθικής συνειδήσεως, με ό,τι προηγουμένως ελέγαμε. Διότι μόνο τότε θα εφαρμόσω τον ηθικό νόμο, εάν πιστέψω. Να λοιπόν γιατί είναι οφθαλμός φωτιστικός η πίστη της ηθικής συνειδήσεως. Αλλά είναι οφθαλμός φωτιστικός η πίστη της γνωστικής συνειδήσεως. Τι είναι αυτή η γνωστική συνείδηση; Είναι ό,τι αναφέρεται στο θέμα της γνώσεως και της θρησκευτικής και της κοσμικής γνώσεως. Να πάρω πρώτα την κοσμική γνώση. Πότε θα μπορούσα να γνωρίσω πολλά πράγματα, όπως λέγαμε την περασμένη φορά, εάν δεν έχω πίστην εις τους διδασκάλους μου και εις τα βιβλία; Διότι ποτέ δεν θα μπορούσα να αποκτήσω έναν μεγάλον όγκο γνώσεως, εάν έπρεπε κάθε φορά, για καθετί που γνωρίζω, εάν εστερούμην πίστεως, να πρέπει να το δοκιμάζω. Για να δω, είναι αυτό έτσι; Για να δω, είναι έτσι; Πότε θα μάθαινα ό,τι έπρεπε να μάθω;

Εδίκασαν λοιπόν και την πάνε να τη λιθοβολήσουν. Στον δρόμο συναντούν τον Δανιήλ και ήτο, παρακαλώ, έφηβος ο Δανιήλ, νεανίσκος είναι. Τι ωραίο πράγμα να απαιτούμε στους νέους, στους εφήβους, να έχουν σύνεση. Τι ωραίο πράγμα! Βάζουμε σήμερα ταυτότητες, αλυσίδες, μπιχλιμπίδια για να στολίσουμε τον εαυτό μας. Στολίδι είναι η σύνεση. Λέει: «Πού πάτε;» Λέει: «Να, πάμε να την καταδικάσουμε αυτή, διότι βρέθη μοιχευομένη». «Πώς έγινε η δίκη;» «Α», λέει, «έτσι και δίκασαν έτσι και έτσι». «Καλά, για ξαναγυρίστε πίσω, γυρίστε πίσω». Βγάζει τους δικαστάς έξω ο έφηβος Δανιήλ. Βάζει τον έναν μέσα, του λέει: «Δεν μου λες;

Αν το πεις αυτό, τότε έχεις ολοκληρωμένη σύνεση. Γιατί έχεις και κοσμική σύνεση, επί κοσμικών πραγμάτων έχεις μυαλό, αλλά και επί πνευματικών πραγμάτων έχεις μυαλό. Αυτό ποιος θα σου το δώσει, ιδίως το δεύτερο, παρά μόνο η πίστη;

θα μπορέσουμε, λέγει, να αναχαιτίσουμε αυτά τα βέλη, τα οποία δεν θα μας βλάψουν τελικά; Εάν αναλάβουμε, εάν σηκώσουμε τον θυρεόν της πίστεως, δηλαδή την ασπίδα της πίστεως, όπως λέγει ο Απόστολος Παύλος. Και λέγει: «Εν ω», με τον οποίο θυρεό, «δυνήσεσθε», θα μπορέσετε, «όλα τα βέλη του πονηρού, τα πεπυρωμένα», εκείνα που τα έβαλε προηγουμένως στη φωτιά και τα επύρωσε, να τα σβήσετε εσείς. Με ποιον τρόπο; Με την πίστη. Λέει μάλιστα ένα παραδειγματάκι. «Αλλ’ η πίστις, υπογράφουσα την κρίσιν». Υπογράφω, θα πει ζωγραφίζω. Εάν ζωγραφίσετε μες στο μυαλό σας αυτό που ήδη πιστεύετε, την κρίση. Ποια κρίση;

Γέννησης της Θεοτόκου, Ευαγγέλιο, Ευαγγέλιο των Ουρανών, Ευαγγέλιο Ουρανών, το Ευαγγέλιο Ουρανών, το Ευαγγέλιο των Ουρανών, Ευαγγέλιο των Ουρανών, Ευαγγέλιο των Ουρανών, Ευαγγέλιο Ουρανών. Ακούστε, λέγει στην κυρά του που του εζήτησε να αμαρτήσει: «Πώς ποιήσω το πονηρόν τούτο ρήμα εναντίον του Θεού μου και αμαρτήσομαι;» Πώς θα κάνω, λέγει, αυτή την πονηρή πράξη μπροστά στα μάτια του Θεού; Πώς θα την κάνω και να φτάσω να αμαρτήσω μπροστά στον Θεό μου;
