Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem teaches that the divinely inspired Old and New Testaments reveal one God and one continuous plan of salvation centered on Jesus Christ. Old Testament prophecy remains relevant because some prophecies were fulfilled at Christ’s first coming while others await the Resurrection, Last Judgment, and Second Coming. The Church receives the canonical books handed down by the Apostles and ancient bishops, including the Old Testament preserved in the Septuagint, while rejecting apocryphal and falsely attributed writings.

We have come to the final paragraph, the last subsection of the seventh section of Saint Cyril’s Fourth Catechetical Lecture, which concerns Holy Scripture, or the Divine Scriptures. I will read you the text: “These things are taught to us by the divinely inspired Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments. For the God of both Testaments is one and the same. In the Old Testament He proclaimed beforehand the Christ who appeared in the New, and through the Law and the Prophets He guided us toward Christ. For before faith came, we were kept under the Law, and the Law became our tutor leading us to Christ.”
The central point of this entire paragraph, of the passage I have just read to you, is this: the God of both the Old and the New Testaments is one and the same. This is the central point not only of this well-known passage, but of the whole chapter and, if you will, of all Holy Scripture. The central truth is that God is one, because heretics have attacked this teaching. But let me translate the passage for you: “These things are taught to us by the divinely inspired Scriptures of both the Old and the New Testaments.”
They teach us that the God of both Testaments is one and the same, and that the Christ who was revealed in the New Testament was proclaimed beforehand in the Old Testament. He was proclaimed beforehand through the Law, the Prophets, the types, and the symbols—that is, throughout the whole of the sacred Old Testament. Jesus Christ was prefigured, announced beforehand, and prophesied. We could therefore say that the New Testament, which reveals Christ, lies hidden, as Saint Augustine says, within the Old Testament.
It lies hidden there. And the New Testament truly makes sense only if the Old Testament exists. Otherwise, the Old Testament is left suspended without fulfillment, and no answer could be given to the question the Lord asked: “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?”—that is, “What do people say about Me?” He would be a mysterious person, just as the person of Christ is mysterious, and remains mysterious, to those who have removed the Old Testament from their field of vision.
They have either relegated the Old Testament to a secondary place or have never read it. For them, Christ truly is a mysterious person—astonishing, certainly, but mysterious. The question of Christ’s identity had already arisen while He was on earth. That is why He asked, “What do people say about Me? Who am I?” And there you see the various answers the disciples give concerning Christ—not, of course, their own answers, but the answers they report from the crowd. What do they say You are? One says the Prophet Jeremiah; another, the Prophet Elijah; another, a new prophet. One says this, another says that.
Indeed, when Herod, who had beheaded John, heard about Christ’s miracles, he said, “What a strange thing—he has risen.” Here we immediately find what we might call a kind of transmigration of the soul. A kind, because there is no birth involved; Herod did not speak of a birth. He says that John had risen in the person of Jesus. This was gross ignorance. He simply could not know who Jesus Christ was. And what did the Lord say? “But who do you say that I am?” The Apostle Peter answered, “You are the Son of the living God.” Where did the Apostle Peter get this answer? Christ said, “It was not a man who revealed this to you, but My Father. No man revealed it to you; My Father did.”
But why did the Father reveal it? The Father required certain conditions before granting this revelation, and those conditions were these: the Apostle Peter, as we know, studied Holy Scripture, as did the other disciples. Remember Philip and Nathanael: “We have found Him of whom Moses wrote in the Law, and also the Prophets: Jesus of Nazareth.” That was yesterday’s Gospel reading. Do you understand what this means? They studied Holy Scripture. There, then, is the fundamental condition: they studied the Old Testament. That is how they knew. How did Philip know? And how could he speak to Nathanael using this argument? “He of whom Moses and the Prophets wrote”—“Moses in the Law, and the Prophets”—“we have found Him.” Do you see where the identifying marks of Jesus Christ are found? His passport, His credentials—however I might put it—His identity is found in the Old Testament.
Can we discard the Old Testament? We cannot. And if Jesus Christ is present there, then the God of both the Old and the New Testaments is one and the same. The Holy Spirit is one and the same, and He illumined the Prophets to write about Jesus Christ. Indeed, the One who speaks in the Old Testament—Yahweh, the Lord, for “Yahweh” means “Lord”—do you know who He is? He is God the Word, the Logos, who became man. It is not the Father who speaks in the Old Testament; it is the Son who speaks there, the Angel of Great Counsel. He is the One who speaks. Therefore, He truly is the same. Of course, in one of his more advanced...
...catechetical lectures, Saint Cyril will explain these things to us in great detail. He will give examples and say something like this: “What are you saying?” Let me tell you this now by way of introduction. “Are you saying that the God of the Old Testament is a jealous God and a blazing, consuming fire, while the God of the New Testament, Jesus Christ, is calm and meek? I will show you that He is the same,” Saint Cyril says. What does God say in the Old Testament? That He is a consuming fire. What does Christ say in the New Testament? “I came to cast fire upon the earth, and what more do I desire if it is already kindled?” Do you see that He is the same? And so on and so forth.
We must know this, beloved; we must know it very well, because unfortunately the view has become widespread in recent times that the Old Testament is antiquated, obsolete, something fit for a museum. This is nothing new. I remember that in 1970—as I have told you before—a teacher published an article in the Larissa newspaper Eleftheria attacking the Old Testament. He argued that the Old Testament should not be taught in schools, along with many other claims, including that it was educationally harmful. The Old Testament, so profoundly rich in instruction, was called educationally harmful! Can you imagine? It is astonishing.
The wealth of material contained in the Old Testament, its educational riches and its profound themes, are extraordinary. Truly extraordinary. One need only approach it. It requires patient endurance. It requires great patient endurance and a great deal of time devoted to its study. It is an immensely important book. So this man was writing against the Old Testament, and I remember saying to the bishop at the time, “I cannot tolerate the Old Testament being attacked in this way. Please grant me permission to give a series of talks on the Old Testament this year.” And I remember that in 1970 we gave an exposition of the first three chapters of Genesis. From that time onward, I included the Old Testament in the program of my talks. And those of you who have been listening for many years know...
Over the years, we have studied many books of the Old Testament in detail. And those of you who have listened for a long time will have seen with what beauty and wisdom, we might say, the Spirit of God set forth teachings concerning Jesus Christ. The Old Testament is astonishing; I have nothing more to say than that. Recently, once again, a movement has arisen against it, and unfortunately even some clergy have taken action against the Old Testament. These things have already been published, and you may have read them. They also use a particular passage, from Hebrews 8:13: “In saying,” the Apostle Paul says there, “a new covenant...”
By calling it new, God has made His first covenant old. “And what is becoming obsolete and growing old is near to vanishing away.” But what exactly has grown old and is near to vanishing away? The Old Testament in and of itself? Has the account of the creation of the world and mankind grown old? Has the teaching concerning ancestral sin grown old? Have the prophecies about Christ grown old and drawn near to vanishing away? Let me point out something in passing that I have not mentioned to you before: the prophecies of the Old Testament Prophets have not yet been exhausted.
They will be exhausted only in the final act of history, which concerns the resurrection of the dead and the Second Coming of Christ. To give you just one ready example instead of a multitude: Daniel speaks of Jesus Christ coming as Judge, and he is told, “For now, Daniel, go and rest. Much time must pass before these things come to pass.” This refers to nothing other than the Second Coming of Christ, the resurrection of the dead, and the judgment of the righteous and the ungodly, when all people will be judged—some unto eternal life and others unto eternal Hell. Daniel even calls it “eternal reproach.” He also speaks about the Antichrist, and so forth. The Prophets have not been exhausted, my beloved. They remain exceedingly relevant.
Our privilege as people of the New Testament is that the first part of the prophecies was fulfilled at Christ’s first coming, while the second part, concerning Christ’s Second Coming, still remains to be fulfilled. Have the Psalms grown old? What about the history of Israel, which is not merely ordinary history, the history of a particular people, but also typological history? And it is typological not only in the sense that it points to Jesus Christ, but also in the sense that it reveals the fate of nations according to whether they accept or reject the Messiah, just as ancient Israel did.
Israel sometimes accepted God and sometimes rejected Him, and experienced the corresponding consequences. In the same way, every nation that either accepts or rejects the Messiah will experience the corresponding consequences. What, then, has become obsolete in the Old Testament? What has grown old? Only one thing has become obsolete—only one—and this is what the Apostle Paul is speaking about. He is therefore entirely correct in what he says there. Anyone who reads the Epistle to the Hebrews will see that one central teaching governs the entire epistle from beginning to end. What is that teaching? The sacrifices prescribed by the Law—that is, the sacrifices of animals, bulls, goats, and sheep.
The animal sacrifices prefigured the sacrifice of Christ. The prototype has come, so the antitypes—the earlier figures that pointed toward Him—are set aside. That is the end of them. And then there is God’s covenant in the Old Testament. Why does the passage speak about the covenant becoming obsolete? In what sense did the covenant grow old? That covenant was established in the blood of animals.
In the blood of animals. Why? Because a sacrifice was offered to make atonement before God. You see, although Noah did not, of course, belong to the history of Israel, what did he do as soon as he came out of the Ark? He offered a sacrifice. This is why God told him to take five pairs of the clean animals and fewer of the unclean.
God told him this so that, until the animals multiplied, he would have animals available to offer in sacrifice. God desired this. Where, then, was God’s covenant established? In the blood of animals. This is why, when—when, I ask you—the Law was given, when the Ark of the Covenant was made, when the Tabernacle of Testimony was built, and when all these things had been constructed, they were sprinkled with animal blood to ratify the covenant God made with His people. And every year the high priest entered the Holy of Holies to sprinkle its interior, the Holy of Holies itself, with the blood of the sacrificed animals, in order to...
...continually ratify that covenant. But now the blood of Christ has been offered. And the Apostle Paul says in the Epistle to the Hebrews that it is impossible for sins to be forgiven through the blood of bulls and goats. Impossible. In the same epistle, near the beginning, the Apostle Paul says that “every transgression and disobedience received a just recompense.” Where? In the Old Testament. “How shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation?” How shall we escape the wrath of God if we have neglected such a great salvation? What salvation? The salvation that is in Christ Jesus.
Elsewhere Holy Scripture speaks to us about those who regard the blood of Christ as common. What does “common” mean? Nothing more than the blood of an ordinary man. That is what they are saying: they want it to be merely human blood, whereas it is the blood of the God-Man. Since, then, we have the blood of the God-Man—since we have the body and blood of Christ—the sacrifices no longer have any meaning and are set aside. And they were not merely set aside. As we are told here, what grew old was the covenant sealed with the blood of animals, not the covenant of the Son of God. The new covenant replaces that old one, not everything else. And what does our Church then say through her Canons? It is expressly and categorically forbidden to offer God any sacrifice, whether fruit or an animal. Nothing at all. It is forbidden.
There is one—and only one—sacrifice: the body and blood of Christ. You will offer wine and bread, and you will receive the body and blood of Christ. Nothing else. This is what became obsolete: the ceremonial law, and the ceremonial law alone. But our Church has taken many elements from the Old Law and incorporated them into her forms of worship. That is another matter. To help you understand this, I will give you a small and very simple example. A pagan temple is demolished. Christians come, take its stones, and use them to build a Christian church. Can they be accused because those stones...
...were transferred from a pagan temple into a Christian church? Can this be called idolatry? Never. It is the same thing, my beloved. The ceremonial law died; the ceremonial law died. It is finished and gone. But we take its stones and use them to build our new worship. We again build a temple, just as the ancient Temple existed. We have the censer and incense; we have the oil lamps. There was the seven-branched lampstand. Moses had one seven-branched lampstand, while Solomon made several. So we have the oil lamp, incense, and other elements—and, if you wish, not only structural elements. Thank you.
They are not merely objects used in our rites; we also have liturgical elements, foremost among them the Psalter. Look at how many verses from the Old Testament appear in the Divine Liturgy. Did you hear what I said? How many verses we have from the Old Testament—in our services, our Liturgy, and our worship! Our worship is filled with verses from the Old Testament. What does all this mean? It means that the ancient worship has influenced the new worship. What died? Only the offering of animal sacrifices died, and nothing else. I think what I have told you is enough—enough for us to understand that we cannot cast aside the Old Testament. It cannot be done, for all the...
...reasons I have given you. Indeed, the Apostle Peter says—and let me give you one final confirmation—“And we have the prophetic word made more sure,” in 2 Peter 1:19. Pay attention to what he says here: “We have something more sure.” More sure in comparison with what? The words “more sure” express a comparison. A comparison with what? Just above, in the immediately preceding verse, he refers to the Transfiguration of Christ. He says that we ourselves were eyewitnesses of the Transfiguration of Christ. We saw Him; we heard the voice borne from heaven: “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” But someone might raise an objection...
...to the miracle to which we bear witness. Now see how naturally the comparative form follows: compared with the miracle, we have something more sure—the prophetic word. Thus, in this case, the prophets provide surer testimony than the miracle the Apostles had witnessed unfolding before their own eyes. Do you see? Do you see what the Apostle Peter invokes? The prophetic word, which he says is more sure than the miracle. Why is it more sure than the miracle? You may ask, “Can that really be so?” Yes, indeed. Here is why. Quite simply, someone might say—and such things have been said throughout history—“It was an optical illusion; the disciples only imagined it. They fell asleep and saw it in a dream.” Whether three people can have the same dream is another matter. There were three witnesses.
People may say it was fabricated, or that it was some spiritualistic phenomenon. A thousand explanations may be offered. Say whatever you like. The prophetic word remains, crushing every objection and reducing it to dust. You have no argument against it. The prophetic word, then, is more sure. “To which”—the Greek here is omega with a rough breathing, circumflex, and iota subscript, meaning “to which word”—“you do well to pay attention.” You do well to heed it. It is as though he were saying: you do well to study the Old Testament. Do you hear? “As to a lamp shining in a dark place,” in a harsh and difficult place...
“...until the day dawns and the morning star rises in our hearts.” That is, until you come to receive the grace of God and become convinced of the reality of the person of Jesus Christ. What else can I say? What else can I say? You see, this is enough. But let us proceed to the sacred text.
“Before faith came, we were kept under the Law, and the Law became our tutor to lead us to Christ. And if ever you hear some heretic blaspheming the Law or the Prophets...” If you hear, he says, some heretic blaspheming either the Law or the Prophets—as happens, unfortunately, in our own time, when people revile the Prophets and revile the Law. Do you know what the celebrated Einstein used to say? He himself was Jewish. Do you know what the celebrated Einstein said? He said that the prophets of the Old Testament were one-sided, narrow-minded, bigoted demagogues who did nothing but oppose the people and their aspirations.
They supposedly claimed that God had told them this or that. Do you hear? These are not new things, my beloved. Even Jews themselves revile the Old Testament; do not imagine otherwise. Do you think atheism and unbelief exist only among Christians and not among Jews? Do you think Zionism could properly stand if it truly stood upon Holy Scripture? Zionism could never stand as it does if these people studied Holy Scripture. Never, never. And if they forge heresies such as millennialism, could a genuine, upright, true, and honest Jew devise such schemes against others merely to strike at them, using what we now call a heresy, such as millennialism?
Sadly, it is unbelief. Nevertheless, “answer back with the saving word, saying...” You are to say what Christ said: “Jesus did not come to abolish the Law, but to fulfill it.” Christ did not come to abolish the Law but to fulfill it—that is, to bring it to completion. We cannot say, then, that we possess the completion and may discard the first part of the whole. No. Keep the completion together with what came before. You know, for example, the great Pyrsoú encyclopedia has twenty-four volumes. Because it came to be considered outdated, another four volumes were published to supplement the twenty-four, and these were called supplements.
It would be very strange for someone to say, “Now I shall keep the four supplementary volumes and throw away the twenty-four volumes.” If Christ came to fulfill—to complete—the Old Testament, how can you say, “I will keep the New Testament and throw away the Old Testament”? Could that ever be possible? Saint Cyril then goes on, my beloved, to discuss the authentic books of Holy Scripture and the Septuagint translation. Further on he will also speak about the authentic books of the New Testament—first those of the Old Testament and then those of the New. There is much I could tell you about this, and the books are listed in several different ways. Under a single title, for example, there may be two books: First and Second Kingdoms may be counted as one book, and so forth. It is very difficult...
So let me simply tell you in my own words that the Old Testament has forty-nine books and the New Testament has twenty-seven. The Old Testament contains historical, prophetic, and poetic books. The historical books relate the history of Israel. The prophetic books contain prophecies concerning the person of Jesus Christ and also concerning the people of God themselves, for all these things prefigure Jesus Christ and serve as types of Him. And then there are the poetic books, such as the Psalms; Job is also a poetic book, and so forth.
Broadly speaking, this is how the books of the Old Testament are divided. Correspondingly, the New Testament also contains historical books, namely the four Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles; then there are the epistles of Paul, Peter, John, Jude, and James; and there is one prophetic book, which is... “Read no additional apocryphal writings. Diligently study only those books which we read openly in the Church. The Apostles and the ancient bishops—the guardians of the Church—who handed these books down were far wiser and more devout than you. Therefore, since you are a child of the Church, do not falsify her ordinances.”
Take care to read only the authentic books, precisely those that are also read in the Church, and not the apocryphal books—the so-called pseudepigrapha, the spurious writings that do not have a truly authentic origin. And do not forget that you yourself are not the standard by which these books are judged. Others far wiser and more devout than you—the Apostles and the ancient bishops—determined what we ought to read. Indeed, my beloved, because apocryphal, falsely attributed, and spurious books circulate under both the Old and New Testaments, our Church—following what the Synagogue had first done—determined which books are authentic.
The first attempt to establish the authentic books of the Old Testament was made in the fifth century before Christ by Ezra and Nehemiah, who determined which books belonged to the Old Testament. Since, however, other Old Testament books appeared after these, the first group, which formed the canon of the Old Testament, came to be called protocanonical. The others, which the Synagogue unfortunately refused to recognize because of its opposition to the Church, are called deuterocanonical. But our Church, my beloved, used all these books, both the protocanonical and the deuterocanonical, through the Septuagint translation, about which I shall speak shortly. Together, all of them constitute the Old Testament.
Note that the Old Testament was translated into Greek because a great many Jews, especially those in Egypt, where they were very numerous—and the Jews of the Diaspora in general—had by then forgotten their mother tongue and could not read Holy Scripture. Even the Jews living in their homeland had forgotten their mother tongue, because Hebrew was no longer spoken. The books called protocanonical had been written in Hebrew. For the Jews, Hebrew was what ancient Greek is for us today, and it continued to be spoken at least until the Babylonian Captivity. After the Babylonian Captivity, the Jews forgot their mother tongue because...
...of conquest and warfare—and this is not the time to explain it all—as well as population movements, and so forth. The language known as Aramaic then began to be spoken. Thus the Jews spoke Aramaic, a language whose roots, we might say, lay in Mesopotamia, and they forgot Hebrew. By the time of Christ, Hebrew was no longer the spoken language; Aramaic was. When Christ said upon the Cross, “Lima”—forgive me—“Eli, Eli,” or “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani”...
“Eloi” means “my God”—God, Elohim—but little by little the Jews had forgotten their own language.
That is why the saying is recorded in the New Testament. When Christ spoke these words in the Hebrew language—they come from the Psalms—“Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani,” meaning, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” they did not understand Him. Hearing only the sound “Eli” or “Eloi,” they thought He was referring to Elijah. They understood it merely by its sound and said, “Let us see. It seems He is calling Elijah to come and take Him down from the Cross. Let us see whether Elijah will come and take Him down from the Cross.” Thus the Jews, my beloved, had forgotten the Hebrew language and could no longer study Holy Scripture. The scholars knew Hebrew, but the people no longer did. The scholars therefore had to read the text and explain it to the people, just as we do with ancient texts.
They would explain the contents to the people. That is why, when the translation was made in Egypt, it was quickly introduced into Palestine as well, to the great joy of the local, native Jews. As Saint Cyril tells us here, this translation was commissioned by Ptolemy II Philadelphus—a Greek and one of the successors of Alexander the Great. He lived from 285 to 246 BC. It appears, however, that the Old Testament continued to be translated in later times.
That is not important. The point is that the first effort to translate the Old Testament was made in the third century BC. This translation was considered highly successful and extremely important. People welcomed it so warmly that, according to an ancient tradition, the work was done on a small island called Pharos, in the harbor of Alexandria. Philo the Jew tells us that the translation of the Old Testament was commemorated with an annual feast. So great was the joy of both the people of the Diaspora and the native population that the Old Testament had been translated into the spoken language, the language the people could understand. And when the Church of Christ was established, this translation was ultimately received by the Church...
The Old Testament, with its forty-nine books, was regarded as the Church’s official Bible. It was embraced with great reverence because all the Evangelists and the other authors of the New Testament wrote in Greek, as is well known, except for the Gospel of Matthew, which, according to one tradition, was written in Hebrew. That Hebrew text no longer exists; it has been lost. It is also said that Matthew himself translated his Gospel into Greek. Therefore, in practical terms, all twenty-seven books of the New Testament are written in Greek. And throughout the New Testament there are very, very many passages from the Old Testament.
The overwhelming majority of these Old Testament quotations are taken word for word from the Septuagint translation. Thus, when the text of the Septuagint entered into the New Testament itself, it acquired the stature of divine inspiration. We therefore hold the Septuagint text in great reverence. Its translators are said to have numbered seventy-two, but for the sake of a round number we say seventy. Since the Greek numeral for seventy is the letter omicron, you will see the expression “the translation of the O with an accent,” meaning the translation of the Seventy. So we have the Septuagint translation with its forty-nine books.
It has been handed down as equal in authority to the New Testament and divinely inspired just as the New Testament is. Together, the Old and New Testaments are called Holy Scripture. Listen to what the Apostle Paul says about this in 2 Timothy 3:16: “All Scripture is inspired by God.” And take note: when the Apostle Paul wrote this to Timothy, not all the books of the New Testament had yet been written. We would therefore say that he was certainly referring to the Old Testament as well—indeed, perhaps even more particularly to the Old Testament. For example, when he tells Timothy, “When you come to Rome, as you pass through Troas, bring the books with you, especially the parchments,” what was written in those books and parchments?
The New Testament? No, my dear friends—the Old Testament. The Old Testament. And it was most likely the Septuagint translation. Why do I say “most likely”? Because the Apostle was an educated man, and it is possible that he had also learned Hebrew. It is quite possible. Therefore, “All Scripture is inspired by God.” He also tells Timothy, “Meditate on these things; remain in them.” Study these things and abide in them. “Until I come, give attention to reading.” Until I come, devote yourself to the reading of the Scriptures. What was Timothy reading? Was he reading the New Testament? He was reading the Old Testament, my dear friends. Indeed, Paul writes to him elsewhere, “You have known”—you are acquainted with—“the sacred writings from infancy.” From infancy!
When he was an infant, his mother and grandmother had him study Holy Scripture—the Greek Septuagint translation—because his father was Greek. Timothy did not know Hebrew or Aramaic; he knew only Greek, though perhaps he knew a little Aramaic as well. In any case, he studied the Septuagint translation. Do you see what the Apostle Paul says? Study these things and abide in them. What does he mean? The Old Testament, which you have read from infancy. And again he says, “All Scripture is inspired by God.” All Scripture. What does “all Scripture” mean? All Scripture, both Old and New, is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for...
“reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.” If you want to become a saint—“in righteousness”—this means training in holiness. That is what training in righteousness is: training in holiness. Holy Scripture will help you. Do you want to stand firm and be edified? Do you want to receive reproof, correction, and training in holiness? Read Holy Scripture. Thus, my dear friends, we see Saint Cyril speaking here, just as I am now explaining Holy Scripture to you. He then speaks about the books of the New Testament: how many there are and which ones we ought to read. He mentions a book called the Gospel According to Thomas. Let me read it to you for historical interest: “Of the New Testament, receive only the four Gospels,” and so forth. “The rest are falsely attributed and harmful.” There are four Gospels—four, and only four.
The Manichaeans also wrote a Gospel According to Thomas, “which, colored with the sweet fragrance of the Gospel’s name, corrupts the souls of the simpler people.” On the outside it appears fragrant and gilded, but inside it is nothing but corruption. For historical interest, some years ago—perhaps about thirty years ago, around 1955; I have a newspaper clipping from that period, though I do not remember the exact date—the Gospel According to Thomas was discovered during an excavation of a tomb in Egypt. It had been lost. We knew of it only through ecclesiastical writers and Fathers who referred to it. Saint Cyril says that it belonged to the Manichaeans, the Gnostics, who used to write such gospels.
They attached the names of well-known disciples to them to give them authority, while these gospels served their own heretical teachings. Be careful, Saint Cyril says; these writings corrupt. Do not read any of them. Since our subject, my dear friends, is Holy Scripture, and since Saint Cyril explains it so well here and tells us not to read any falsely attributed writings but only Holy Scripture, allow me to take this opportunity, as I said, to offer a few useful thoughts about studying Holy Scripture. It is hardly necessary to say that the study and knowledge of Holy Scripture are absolutely essential. John Chrysostom said, my dear friends, “It is impossible, impossible to be saved without reading the divine Scriptures.”
It is impossible, he says—impossible for anyone to be saved if he does not study Holy Scripture. Why does he say “impossible”? Someone might say, “I am illiterate.” What he means is that you must not be cut off from the Word of God. You may be unable to read, but you can still listen, and you can have the humility to hear what the speaker is saying. But if you have no contact with Holy Scripture, know this, my brother: very soon you will fall into conditions that cannot lead you to salvation. He even says that the absence and ignorance of the Holy Scriptures, and the failure to study them, have introduced a corrupt way of life and brought in heresies—I shall give you his very words—and “turned everything upside down.” What has turned everything upside down? Ignorance of the Holy Scriptures. Therefore...
We must acquire the holy habit of studying Holy Scripture. My dear friends, keep it beside you, by your bed, and study it. I said “by your bed”—pay attention. I wanted to say something more. I mean that you should keep several copies of the New Testament, at least of the New Testament, in different places around your home. If you are a scholar or work at a desk, keep a copy of Holy Scripture on your desk. If you have an office away from home, keep a copy of Holy Scripture there, in your desk drawer or on the desk itself. Keep a copy of Holy Scripture beside you on your bedside table. Then, whether you are sitting at your desk reading...
Or perhaps you have no desk but only a table—keep Holy Scripture there. Pick it up and read it. Sit there and read. Just as we write a letter or read something else, let us also read Holy Scripture. Or when you lie down, reach out, take Holy Scripture, and read. You may ask, “May we read while lying down?” The Word of God says so. It speaks of you “rising and lying down”—the word for lying down refers to going to your bed—“entering and going out.” The Old Testament says this. As you enter and leave your home, everywhere, you are to keep the law of God before your eyes. It says that you shall write God’s law upon the frames of your windows and doors, upon your walls—everywhere. Even along the lower edge of your garments you are to put a fringe.
Those many threads, the fringe, were to remind you of My commandments. My law everywhere, My law spread everywhere. And it is well known that the hymn to the Word of God, to the law of God, is Psalm 118. It contains about two hundred verses and is the longest of all the Psalms. Every one of its verses is a hymn to Holy Scripture, referring to Holy Scripture by different names. There are ten such names. It gives Holy Scripture ten names, such as words, law, ordinances, and so forth. We must therefore study Holy Scripture. And those who are able, those who have received some education...
Education is a blessed and useful thing. How useful it is! I will tell you something personal. My father was a cook, my dear friends. When the eight-year secondary school system was introduced in 1937, I was wandering about in the fourth grade of primary school. So I was due to enter secondary school. My father did not exactly prevent me—I owe him many thanks, but I mention this as an incident. He said, “Ah, there is no need for him to continue at school. He can stop here, and we shall make him a cook.” And I did become something of a cook as well, since I know how to prepare a few dishes. But my mother insisted. She said, “No, I want my child to receive an education.” How much gratitude I owe her! I do not know whether I learned enough to do other kinds of work, my dear friends; I do not know. I know only one thing: the few poor letters we learned were learned during the wartime occupation.
Those few scraps of learning we acquired, especially in the ancient language—and, I repeat, during the occupation, so our education was incomplete—helped me so greatly to delight in the Word of God! It is a delight simply to be able to study the Word of God in the original, to understand it, to delve into every word, and to see each word’s root and meaning. It is a delight. And lest you think I am exaggerating, Holy Scripture itself says: “How sweet are Your words to my throat, sweeter than honey to my mouth.” Your words, it says, are sweeter to my throat, sweeter even than honey. Most sweet. It is not without reason or purpose, my dear friends, that Europeans and Japanese, when they learn Greek, first learn Greek itself...
Greek in the original—ancient Greek—so that they may read Holy Scripture, the New Testament, in the original. This is no small thing. It is a true delight. Therefore, whoever has received the blessing from God of acquiring some education should also make an effort to understand the text philologically. How many times in these talks have I given you opportunities to understand the language of the text? This is necessary and important. We should pause over a word, consult a dictionary, and examine its etymology. Then we should consult a second dictionary. You know, however comprehensive one dictionary may be, it does not always exhaust the full meaning of a word. That is precisely why we have many dictionaries of the Greek language: so that what we cannot find in one, we may find elsewhere.
This applies, of course, as I say again, to those who are able and who have received this blessing. We did not acquire an education in order to make money. The ancient Greeks said the same; it was the ideal of ancient Greek education. If only we could return to that ideal! We do not learn in order to make money. The ancient Greeks would say, “I learn in order to become a philosopher. I acquire an education so that I may be a philosopher.” And the Christian would say, “I learn so that I may understand and delight in Holy Scripture.” That is why I acquire an education. Now, if along the way I can also earn my bread through what I have learned, there is nothing wrong with that. But the first and fundamental purpose is that we be cultivated, understand the Word of God, and enter into the treasures of its interpretation, which are found in the Fathers...
Of our Church. Furthermore, when we study, let us also turn to the parallel passages. I have helped you with this in my talks. When I seek to substantiate a point, I refer you to this passage and that passage, which run parallel in meaning. This will help you greatly. In many editions of Holy Scripture, beside the text or beneath it, depending on the edition, you will find what are called parallel passages, and studying them is a great delight. For example: “Let Us make man” is one such passage; “Come, let Us go down and confuse their language” is a parallel passage; “Behold, Adam has become like one of Us” is another; and there is also the parallel passage from Isaiah...
“Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?” But that rendering is from the Hebrew, not the Greek; it is not from the Septuagint translation. “Who will go for Us?” is a modern translation from the Hebrew. These plural forms have meaning. They do have meaning. These are called parallel passages. We should also consult specialized books of interpretation. Glory to God, commentaries are now available. When I was a student, there were no commentaries on Holy Scripture, nor were patristic books available. There was great poverty. Now there is, we might say, an abundance of published works concerning the Word of God.
The Old and New Testaments. And they should study them properly: the text, the translation, and the commentary. If only you knew how fruitful this kind of study is!
Furthermore, we should go and hear the Word of God, discuss the Word of God, and gather in Bible-study groups, as we have gathered here this evening. We must also be very careful not to misinterpret the Word of God to suit ourselves. Take, for example, those irresponsible people who quote, “Test all things; hold fast what is good.”
Have you taken the trouble to read a little earlier and see what the Apostle Paul says there? You tear this verse out of context because it suits you—because it serves your self-interest and your sinfulness—and claim that you may try fornication, adultery, and everything else, provided that in the end you hold on to what is good. What kind of interpretation is that? We must never interpret Scripture in this way. We must not give it a subjective interpretation that suits us, because we will not be saved. That will be our recompense: we will not be saved. Instead, we must interpret it as God wills, so that we may be saved. We must not adapt Holy Scripture to our lives; we must adapt our lives to Holy Scripture. We must also have great...
...preparation of heart. In other words, when we read Holy Scripture, we must be ready to hear the Word of God as truly the Word of God. We must not take up the book of Holy Scripture as we would read a scientific or technical book, or a novel. We must receive it as the Word of God. And we must prepare our hearts through prayer. Never read even a single verse of Holy Scripture without first offering at least the briefest prayer. When have we ever held our Bible studies without prayer? Do we not always say here, “Shine within our hearts, O Master who loves mankind”? Or at least offer a prayer in your own words: “Lord, open my nous, my spiritual intellect. Send the Holy Spirit to illumine me, so that I may understand what I am about to read in Your divine Word.” Thank you.
We strive to have the nous—the spiritual intellect—of Christ, to see as someone would see who truly has the nous of Christ and the eyes of Christ. That is how we should look at the text. Moreover, we must not read it merely on the surface—bare and isolated, simply as a literary text or merely for education. We must put it into practice. What does this have to say to me? What does what I have read mean for me? How can I apply it? We must also have perseverance and patient endurance. You know that we must not grow weary. If we do not understand a passage, we must lay siege to it. Do you know the method of Jericho? That is what I call it. You know that Jericho was taken by Joshua, son of Nun, in that familiar way.
The people marched around it in silence, once each day. On the seventh day, they made six circuits in silence, and on the seventh circuit they raised a great shout. Then the walls of Jericho fell, and the people entered. Jericho is the meaning of a word or a passage. It must be besieged with patient endurance and perseverance. I will look at it. I looked at it today; I will look again tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, next year, and even fifty years from now. I will keep laying siege to it. One day I will shout for joy because I have conquered it. God will reveal it to me. He will see my patient endurance and my perseverance, and He will reveal it to me. He Himself said so, speaking in the parable of the Sower about the one who has patient endurance.
My dear ones, let us begin in this way to study the Word of God. There should not be a single home without the New and Old Testaments. Glory to God, beside the text there is now a translation—or at least an interpretation; not exactly a translation, but an interpretation. Therefore, no one is justified in saying, “I am uneducated.” We must all obtain the New and Old Testaments and begin studying them under the conditions I have described. Then, be assured, we will bear abundant fruit, and our greatest fruit will be our salvation.

Κατατεθειμένη, ισόκυρος με την Καινή Διαθήκη, θεόπνευστος όπως και η Καινή Διαθήκη, και η Παλαιά και η Καινή με μία ονομασία λέγονται Αγία Γραφή. Ακούστε τι λέγει πάνω σε αυτό ο Απόστολος Παύλος, Β΄ Τιμόθεον 3,16: «Πᾶσα γραφὴ θεόπνευστος». Και να σημειώσετε, όταν ο Απόστολος Παύλος γράφει αυτό στον Τιμόθεο, δεν έχουν ακόμη γραφεί όλα τα βιβλία της Καινής Διαθήκης. Και θα λέγαμε ότι αναφέρεται βεβαίως και στην Παλαιά Διαθήκη, για να μην πω πιο περισσότερο στην Παλαιά Διαθήκη. Όταν, επί παραδείγματι, λέει στον Τιμόθεο, ερχόμενος στη Ρώμη, από την Τρωάδα που θα περάσεις, φέρε μαζί σου και τα βιβλία, μάλιστα τας μεμβράνας. Τι έγραφαν εκεί τα βιβλία και οι μεμβράνες;
