Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem’s Fourth Catechesis introduces clothing as a theological subject tied to humanity’s created nature and destiny. Christ restores the lost garment through His Resurrection and Ascension, anticipating the glorified, Spirit-governed bodies of the faithful in the Kingdom of God. Saint Cyril therefore teaches Christians to wear simple, seasonally appropriate, modest clothing for protection rather than luxury, eccentricity, vanity, or indecent display.

In the summary of topics that Saint Cyril of Jerusalem gives us in his Fourth Catechesis, he also includes the subject of clothing. Having spoken to us about foods—that is, about what people eat, about the human diet, how a person should eat, what may or may not be eaten, and so forth, as well as the beliefs about food introduced by heretics throughout history—he now comes to speak to us about clothing and dress: in other words, what we should wear and how we should dress.
You may ask, “Is this really an important subject?” It is. It is extremely important. Why? Because we must first ask what man’s proper garment is. Have you noticed that every animal has a garment, some natural way of covering itself? Man has none; he is naked. We would never say that a cat or a dog is naked. Every animal has its own covering—an outer covering that is not merely skin, but something more. Yet when we look at man, something is clearly missing. And of course, it never occurred to us that animals needed to be clothed.
We realized that we ourselves needed clothing. An animal can endure a fairly wide range of temperatures, as we might say: great cold and also great heat—at least those animals that do not live for only a single season. There are, of course, animals that God has made unable to live longer than a year, or even a few months, such as flies. But man truly lacks such a natural covering. If you tell me that he once had body hair, I would answer that this is not enough. He may indeed have had some hair on his body, but certainly not a fleece like a sheep’s.
Nor fur like an ape’s—unless, of course, someone accepts the myth that the ape is his great-grandfather. But these are only theories, unproven claims from a scientific point of view. They are merely theories, for otherwise there would be no dispute among people about what is scientifically true. You should know this. What, then, is man’s garment? We must look for another kind of garment. Moses, the sacred author, tells us that Adam and Eve were naked when they were in Paradise. Yet when he says they were naked, he says so in light of the fact that afterward they were left exposed. Had that later event not occurred, the author would never have written that they were naked. But because something happened that revealed their nakedness, he writes, “They were naked,” and adds that “they were not ashamed.” They were naked, yet they felt no shame before one another. I repeat: this is said in view of what happened afterward. But when Adam and Eve sinned, they then understood that they were naked. Did they not know before that they were naked? Could they not see it?
“Their eyes were opened,” Scripture says. The devil had told them, “Your eyes will be opened, and you will become gods.” But their eyes were opened in the opposite way: they became aware that they had been stripped bare. And this stripping, my dear friends, was in reality as follows. First, it was an inward stripping: they were stripped of the grace of God. Today we might express it by saying, “I feel empty inside.” What does “empty” mean? It means that I feel naked, with nothing within me. Their nakedness, then, was first of all inward. The grace of God departed. Afterward, their nakedness was also outward. Adam and Eve
were physically naked, just as a person would be if stripped of all clothing today, yet they were clothed in divine glory—the glory that we shall possess again in the Kingdom of God. They were clothed in that divine glory, something altogether different, ineffable and beyond comprehension, which the animals did not possess. When God said that Adam and Eve received His image, He clearly identified one feature of that image—perhaps the only one explicitly named, since all the others, such as freedom and rationality, are understood.
They are not explicitly mentioned. But the following feature is mentioned as an element of the image of God in man: “Let them have dominion,” He says, “over all the beasts and the fish,” and so forth. “Let them have dominion”—that is, let them possess what we call the ruling power, from the verb “to rule.” I am the ruler; I am the lord; I have dominion over the earth. This is why God also said, “Have dominion over this earth.” But what could make the animals perceive man as their ruler and recognize that they were under his authority? Theosis, or divinisation. It was this divine glory, which we regain through Jesus Christ. And when animals perceive this glory—and here is the astonishing thing—they submit. Let me give a familiar example. I have used it many times, and those of you who have heard me often will say, “He has given this example before”: Saint Seraphim of Sarov, who lived in friendship with bears. Yet it is a well-known phenomenon that all the Saints could live peacefully with wild animals. How often do we read in the lives of the Saints that they could even use a lion as a beast of burden, and so forth? Yes, indeed. How is it that the animal obeys?
It does not turn against the person. Something restrains it. What restrains the animal and causes it to recognize man is the uncreated glory of God present in that person. This, then, is man’s garment. This was his garment, my dear friends. Adam and Eve possessed this garment, and they were not ashamed. But they lost it, and in place of this lost garment, this lost raiment, God provided a substitute: He made garments of skin and clothed Adam and Eve. I shall return to these garments of skin, but first I would like to ask you: Have you ever wondered what clothes we shall wear when we rise from the dead and enter the Kingdom of God? Have you thought about that? I would answer: What clothes? The garments we weave, or furs taken from animals? What a degradation! And consider that some women pay many thousands to wear furs—which means that they put on animal hides, hides belonging to irrational creatures. For the animal hide is an outward sign of irrationality. They clothe themselves in irrationality and boast that they are wearing fur—that is, an animal skin, a symbol of irrationality.
What a strange thing—to boast about some wretched old fur, and an expensive one at that! A strange thing indeed. You see how the searchlight of theology shines upon created things, so that afterward we can see them with clear eyes. If we lack that light, we do not see them. Thus, in the Kingdom of God, my dear friends, we shall not wear clothes—material clothes, I mean. Clothing is a sign of the Fall. What shall we wear? Divine glory. When Christ rose from the dead, the Gospels tell us that the garments in which they had clothed Him remained in the tomb. You know, the same custom continues to this day when we prepare our dead for burial.
When a person dies, we undress him, wash him, and clothe him in other, clean garments. We even put his suit on him. Some are buried in the suit they wore at their wedding, as though they were setting off for the other world in it. Of course, we do not enter the other world in a suit. It remains in the grave and decays there. The Jews followed the same custom—and it is from them that we received it. They washed the dead and then anointed them with myrrh, an aromatic, sticky liquid. Then they applied those familiar strips of linen, those bandages
like the strips soldiers once wrapped around their legs during the war, even as late as 1941. They went round and round the legs. In this same manner they wrapped the dead—or as babies used to be swaddled, not in diapers but with a long strip of cloth. They placed the arms against the body and wrapped the dead person after first anointing the body with that aromatic, sticky substance. This was how burial was carried out. Christ, then, had no clothes; moreover, those who crucified Him had divided His garments among themselves. They cast lots and shared them out. Take careful note: Christ was completely naked upon the Cross.
Completely naked. For the sake of decency, we depict Christ with a covering. His nakedness, however, was itself part of the punishment and public humiliation. Thus, in the tomb Christ had none of His former clothing; He had only the burial wrappings. Those burial wrappings were found intact in the tomb. Christ came out from within them without their being unwrapped at all. How He came out, of course, belongs to the mystery of His new body: a spiritual body, not immaterial, but governed by the Holy Spirit. He passed through those wrappings. Therefore, when He rose in the Resurrection,
did He have clothes? He was naked. When the disciples, Mary Magdalene, the other women disciples, and the rest saw Christ, did they see Him naked? No, they saw Him clothed. Yet He appeared clothed because those who beheld Him were still in this present world, and it would not have been fitting for them to see their Teacher naked. That would have been improper. Thus they saw Him clothed, though Christ was not wearing material garments. He already possessed divine glory. That was His clothing.
When Christ entered the Kingdom of God through the Ascension, He plainly wore no material clothing, but was clothed in divine glory. The Church believes that the Theotokos rose from the dead. Does she wear clothes in the Kingdom of God? Certainly not. Rather, she possesses the first robe—the robe Eve once had—and in a far greater measure: the robe of divine glory. This, my dear friends, is the robe that we too shall have in the Kingdom of God. These present clothes are nothing; they are cheap and lowly garments. Shall I tell you something else as well? See how everything comes at the proper moment. You all know the story of the Prophet Elijah. The Prophet wore only a sheepskin.
Holy Scripture calls it a mantle of sheepskin. It was a sheep’s hide and expressed the simplicity of his dress, and of course he always wore it. When the time of his being taken up was already being discussed, the sons of the prophets informed Elisha, “Your master will be taken up into heaven.” “Be quiet,” Elisha replied. “I know.” It had been revealed to Elisha as well. Yet he did not dare say anything to the Prophet Elijah. He dared not speak of it. The Prophet tried to avoid him, saying, “Go here; go there,” but Elisha would not leave him. Elijah said, “Stay here; I am going to cross the Jordan.” But Elisha answered, “As the Lord God lives, and as your soul lives,
I will follow you; I will not leave you. Wherever you go, I too will go.” He knew that something was about to happen: Elijah would be taken up. But the Prophet Elisha could not understand much more than that. Then he said to Elijah, “I know that you are leaving, but when you go, I want to receive a double portion of your gift of prophecy.” Elijah told him, “I shall cast down my sheepskin mantle to you, and if you truly receive it—if it actually falls into your hands...” For the Prophet himself did not know: would the garment he was wearing disappear? This is the same question we ask about what our new bodies will be like. Or, if you prefer, it is like what the Apostle Paul says of himself: that he was caught up to the third heaven, whether in the body or out of the body, he does not know. Was he there in his body?
“Whether in the body or out of the body, I do not know,” he says. “The Lord has seen; the Lord knows.” These are realities we cannot grasp. Can we really comprehend them? And indeed, as the Prophet Elijah was taken up, he cast down his sheepskin mantle, and Elisha received it. With it he crossed the River Jordan, performing the same miracle Elijah had performed. Then everyone understood that Elisha too had received the prophetic gift. What did he receive? The sheepskin mantle. How did Elijah depart? Naked. Yes, because where he was going, he had no need of an animal skin. Think about that mantle. What is an animal skin? It is exactly what God gave Adam and Eve. You see, then, that material clothing came as a replacement for the garment we had lost.
We might say, of course, that this garment of divine glory was as though woven together with our very essence. Pay attention to what I said: as though it were. It was as though woven into us, as though it existed together with our essence. This divine glory from God is His uncreated energy. And this was our garment. We lost it, and ever since then man has not felt at ease. Indeed, when Adam and Eve lost this garment, they felt shame. I assure you, for years I have tried to understand why they felt ashamed. There had been innocence. Note carefully that ancestral sin certainly did not consist of a sexual act.
And even if it had, since they had received God’s blessing, why should they have been ashamed? Yet within Paradise they were both virgins. Sexual union—Holy Matrimony—took place outside Paradise. And this is significant, because in the Kingdom of God, as I have told you many times, there will be no Holy Matrimony. We shall return to the original state of Adam and Eve, but on a far grander scale—that is, in a glory far greater than that possessed by our first ancestors in the earthly Paradise. Yes, they possessed divine glory; yes, they were not ashamed; and there was no Holy Matrimony. But there, in the Kingdom of God, we shall possess something far, far greater.
Did Holy Matrimony, then, take place inside Paradise or outside it? What was it, therefore, that caused them to feel ashamed? Today a little child—two, three, four, or five years old—may undress without shame. I remember, and perhaps the older among you will remember as well, that when we took small children swimming at the seaside, I assure you, not one of them wore what we now call a bathing suit. The older people will remember. We went to the sea as fairly grown children—six, seven, eight, nine, even ten years old—and swam completely naked before crowds of people. I too did this as a child, I believe, and I do not remember feeling ashamed. The other children did the same.
Today, however, they are right to put swimsuits even on small children and infants, because the world has become corrupt. They are right to do so. From that point of view, they are right, because we have become very corrupt indeed. But a small child feels no shame. A child has an innocence. An adult, however, cannot help feeling shame, even subconsciously. This subconscious feeling has its roots back there, in our first-created ancestors who felt ashamed. What caused it? To tell you the truth, I have not been able to understand. It was not because of their genital area. I do not think that is the point. Yet they felt ashamed. Scripture says that, in their nakedness, “they were not ashamed.” Very well, but why speak of nakedness? It is as though something were missing. Let me tell you something from my own experience. For a moment, I sometimes wonder...
I am accustomed to wearing my cassock, am I not? I am used to being in my cassock, in my inner cassock. And for a fleeting moment the thought comes to me: perhaps I am not wearing my cassock. Yes, perhaps I am not wearing it—an uneasy feeling that I may be standing naked before other people. That is what it means. If someone has grown accustomed to being naked—take note, because when a person becomes accustomed to undressing, the shame disappears—then matters are different. But this fear seizes us: “Could I be naked?” And an unpleasant feeling comes over you. This runs deep. It probably reveals the absence of that first garment.
A person is ashamed to be in a state that does not befit him—that is, in what we now call nakedness. Perhaps this is how we should understand it. But God came and gave garments of skin to our first-created ancestors. Scripture says that God “made garments of skin.” Every word in Holy Scripture is... let me weigh this carefully. The idea and making of clothing was not a human invention. It belongs to God. A little later, we shall see very close descendants of Cain
inventing weaving. Naamah—not Naomi—is related to Naomi; both names mean “beautiful,” and Naomi is mentioned in Ruth. But I cannot remember the exact name. In any case, its root is the letter nun. I cannot recall the name at this moment. There were four siblings, three boys and one girl. I am a little dizzy and cannot remember their names just now. They invented musical instruments and various other things; some were inventors of agriculture, and this woman invented weaving. That is something momentous. You know that weaving is one of the greatest inventions, but the very idea of clothing did not originate with man.
It was given by God, and man was then able to see that he could clothe himself. Therefore, the words “God made garments of skin” show that clothing does not belong to man as his own invention; it belongs to God. And so human beings were clothed in animal skins. The subject of these skins has profound theological meaning. Many Fathers have written about it, presenting various interpretations and aspects of the matter. I shall dwell on only one point, which I have already mentioned: when God gave our first-created ancestors garments of skin to replace the uncreated garments they had lost, those garments served at the same time
both as protection against changes in the weather—cold, heat, and so forth—and as a symbol: you are clothed in garments of skin, which means that you are clothed in irrationality. Animals are irrational; they do not possess reason. Since they have no reason, you too are now clothed in irrationality. Know that this is an outward sign that you also will lose the proper use of your reason, because God the Word (Logos) will disappear from your field of vision.
For human reason receives its light at every moment from the light of God the Word. What do we say in the Doxology? “In the light of Thy countenance shall we see light.” Do we not say, “In the light of Thy countenance”? What is the light of Thy countenance? What is the light by which we shall see light? It is the light of the countenance of Christ, of God the Word. Through the countenance of God the Word, which is light, we shall see the light of God: “In the light of Thy countenance shall we see light.” Thus man lost the proper use of his reason. In other words, God the Word disappeared from his field of vision, and his reason was damaged. It became distorted, and from this came irrationality. From then on, human conduct would be nothing but irrationality. What is missing if man’s rational nature is to be restored? God the Word. When God the Word comes and enters the life of the believer—of every human being—true reason returns, and authentic human reason finds its proper place. It is extremely important, my dear friends, that we understand this. This is why we encounter irrationality and cannot come to an understanding with other people. We regard as reasonable things that are actually irrational, and so forth. When someone tells you, “There is no God,” that is the greatest irrationality of all.
Let me confine myself to that greatest irrationality. To say, “There is no God,” is a terrible thing. It is true irrationality. And when does man recover sound reason, reason according to God? When he receives Jesus Christ, God the Word, who made us in His image and truly gave us what He Himself possesses—namely, rationality.
With this brief introduction—if it can be called brief for the subject before us—this theological introduction to human clothing, we now come to see what Saint Cyril tells us in his twenty-ninth paragraph, which occupies only four or five lines in the book. Let us see, then, what he says, bearing in mind the theological points we have already examined.
“Let your clothing be simple, not for adornment but for necessary protection; not so that you may grow soft, but so that you may be kept warm in winter and cover the unseemliness of the body. Do not, under the pretext of covering that unseemliness, fall into another kind of unseemliness through elaborate clothing.” Let us examine, my dear friends, what Saint Cyril tells us here. “Let your clothing be simple, not for adornment but for necessary protection.” The clothes you wear are garments of exile and necessity. The way we clothe ourselves belongs to the form of this present age. Therefore, what you put around yourself should be plain and simple. This does not mean that we should go and wear animal skins. Christ did not wear an animal skin.
Holy Scripture says that He wore a tunic, and it even tells us that this tunic was woven, seamless, woven throughout—much as a sock is woven without a seam. The Lord’s tunic was likewise seamless, the holy Evangelist tells us. This means that it was placed upon a loom and woven by human hands. So we are not going to wear animal skins. The clothes we wear may possess a certain good taste; there is nothing sinful in that. Take note: first of all, they should be the clothing commonly worn by people in our own time. If we were now to put on a fustanella, for example, or some other unusual garment,
we would create an impression contrary even to modesty, as we shall see shortly. So we shall wear the clothes of our own time—the clothes currently made and produced in factories. Their cut and style should be simple: ordinary, not affected or extravagant, but restrained. This, then, is what he means when he says, “Let your clothing be simple, not for adornment.” You see, adornment is one thing and a respectable appearance is another. They are two different things. Adornment means something affected and elaborate. Saint Cyril will mention this again a little further on. But he continues,
“but for necessary protection.” Let us not forget that our clothing should be as Basil the Great says—even when speaking specifically about monks—of two kinds: winter clothing and summer clothing. If I wear winter clothes in summer, I shall be foolish; and if I wear summer clothes in winter, I shall freeze. That is perfectly natural. See what Saint Cyril says: “not so that you may grow soft, but so that you may be kept warm in winter,” and so forth. What does “grow soft” mean here? It means physical weakness and listlessness. Do not wear clothing that reduces your body to such a state. For if you wear winter clothing in summer, you will become exhausted once again
and will no longer be able to do anything. Undoubtedly, then, the warmth of our clothes should suit the season. We shall have winter clothing and summer clothing. He adds that a second purpose is “to cover your unseemliness.” The word “unseemliness” has several meanings. The Apostle Paul uses it when he says that we bestow greater adornment upon the parts considered less honorable. For example, we dress them more carefully, whereas my hands and my head
are presented openly in a respectable way; I do not cover them. But I do cover other parts of the body that are considered less honorable. Elsewhere, in Romans, the Apostle speaks of people committing their shameful acts, “men with men,” and so forth. Thus the word “unseemliness” has several meanings. First, it can mean the genital area. Second, it can mean an indecent act. Third, it can mean ugliness. And fourth, it can mean impropriety. Ugliness and impropriety are not the same thing. Ugliness is something that is not comely;
impropriety is something that ought not to happen. They are different. These, then, are the various meanings of the word “unseemliness.” What does Saint Cyril mean here? He uses the word twice, with two different meanings. The first meaning is found in the phrase, “so that you may cover your unseemliness”—that is, your genital area. You should dress in order to cover your genital area. “Do not, under the pretext of covering your unseemliness, fall into another kind of unseemliness through elaborate clothing.” In other words, do not
come under the pretext of covering your unseemliness—meaning your genital area—
only to fall in this way into another kind of unseemliness, namely impropriety. How? “Through elaborate clothing,” he says. Elaborate clothing means clothing that has been excessively contrived. That is what the phrase means. I shall say it again: excessively contrived or affected clothing. It is what we would call eccentric dress—the eccentric person who dresses strangely and unusually. This is why I said earlier that I would not put on a fustanella. If I were to go out wearing one now, everyone would turn and stare at me. Where, then, would I have fallen? I might claim to be traditional, or I might put on some long tunic and walk about
trying to appear like a man from antiquity. Everyone would turn to look at me, and I would have fallen into another kind of unseemliness. What kind? Impropriety and a lack of modesty. I might be wearing something that covers my whole body, but my overall appearance would certainly not be modest. I remember a man before the war whose name was Michael. He was known throughout Athens. I once saw him in the street dressed as follows. I was very young, and I cried out to my parents, “Who is that? What is he?” He wore a short tunic that came down to about his knees, and sandals with straps reaching up to his knees—the clothing of an ancient Greek. And because he had this
peculiar obsession with appearing like a man of antiquity, people had nicknamed him “Michael the Ancient.” You understand, then, that he was anything but a modest man, though he may have imagined himself to be modest. But now, my dear friends, I would like to tell you a few other things. Clothing has given rise to many deviations. Once we lost what I mentioned at the beginning—the searchlight of theology that illumines things for us, enabling us to know what each thing truly is—it was only natural that we should fall into many improprieties and many extremes. First of all, an entire trend arose around clothing:
Out of the whole question of clothing there arose a complete trend: what we know as fashion. Fashion means a passing trend. And you see that man now moves around in a treadmill called fashion. What does fashion dictate? What shall we wear in winter? What shall we wear in summer, spring, and autumn? And you see us constantly changing, continually changing styles. At one time, we might say, men’s clothing hardly changed at all: perhaps a jacket would have two buttons in front instead of four, or the cuffs would have five buttons instead of two. That was about the extent of men’s fashion. Today, however, men’s fashion follows women’s fashion, and I very much fear that men will soon begin having their clothes made by dressmakers.
Yet all this variety in the way people—both men and women—dress has created an unbearable situation. First of all, there is no economic stability, so to speak. In earlier times, as I mentioned, a man’s wedding suit was the suit he wore on feast days and other occasions, and in that same suit he would eventually die. Today, the idea that someone might keep one suit throughout his life is unthinkable—utterly unthinkable. But this creates economic disorder and instability. For make no mistake: the matter of clothing goes hand in hand with the matter of food, or the matter of food with the matter of clothing. When all these things create
constant change, and industries are driven to produce and produce and produce—what do they not produce?—then we have the phenomenon of inflation. Of course, I am not an economist. But I know one thing, which every ordinary person can understand by common sense: this frantic race, in which industry and production strive to keep ahead of consumption, and consumption strives to keep ahead of production, must come to some conclusion. And that conclusion is none other than inflation. In a very short book, Solzhenitsyn wrote about this phenomenon and appealed to the whole world to pay attention to this matter: this relentless pursuit of production and consumption.
This economic system inevitably leads to inflation from time to time. As I told you, I am not an economist, nor have I studied these matters deeply. But these are very plain things, which ordinary common sense can understand. You may ask me, “But what are we to do?” Of course, in discussing this subject here today, we are not going to solve the economic problem of the whole world, my beloved.
We can, however, my beloved, solve our own personal problem. If we show simplicity and restraint in our clothing and our food, we will have both economic stability and spiritual stability. For what we call fashion is a vehicle: a vehicle not only for new styles of clothing, but also for new ideas. Do not forget this.
At times we may say to someone, “Do not dress this way; dress another way.” That is because fashion is not merely about clothes in themselves. As I tell you again, it is a vehicle for ideas. Now, someone who is present here said to me, “I feel uncomfortable shaving.” What he meant was, “Will you permit me to grow a beard?” I told him, “No, you will not grow a beard.” If I had been living at the time when men were first beginning to shave, I would have told him, “You must not shave; you will keep your beard.” Then you may ask me, “Are these things relative, then?” At this moment, if you grow a beard, you are following a fashion, because growing beards is fashionable. Beards are manly. Beards are beautiful, without question. And Holy Scripture says, “You shall not disfigure your beard or your moustache.”
“You shall not disfigure them”—that is, you shall not cut them. There is no question about that. But at this moment, if you grow a beard, you are following a trend, because growing beards is fashionable. And growing a beard may mean that, along with it, I begin to receive and accept the ideas carried on the wings of fashion in clothing. This is what we call the danger, and this is what we must guard against. We must be extremely careful about it. I say to our children and to the young, “My child, cut your hair.”
You may say to me, “Consider certain things carefully.” It is not because growing a beard or long hair is ugly or beautiful, sinful or not sinful, but because—and I will say this for the third time—it becomes a vehicle for ideas: modern ideas. And these modern ideas are not in accordance with the Gospel. What, then, are we to do? I believe you have understood this point. It is subtle, but extremely valuable and useful. Let us hold on to it. This concerns the question of fashion. But, as I told you, fashion also reaches terrible extremes. In our own time we have reached something that did not occur in other eras, although the law of God had already condemned it. It is found in Deuteronomy. In the effort to promote this new idea conveyed through clothing, we use the word “unisex.” This means making the sexes alike,
as we have said so many times here in this very place. You see a young woman dressing in such a masculine way that you wonder whether she is a man or a woman, and a man dressing in such a feminine way that you wonder whether he is a man or a woman. They wish to serve precisely this idea of unisex—that is, the uniformity of the sexes. The sexes are to resemble one another; the man and the woman are to look alike. There is to be no distinction and no difference. Thus, the woman becomes something approaching the man, and the man becomes something approaching the woman. They meet at a certain point and acquire, so to speak, a common appearance. But this is extremely dangerous. Remember what we said about it on an earlier occasion, last year, when
we were speaking about Deuteronomy and the dangers hidden within it.
Psychology speaks of this danger: that a kind of psychological hermaphroditism is created. What is psychological hermaphroditism? It is when a man begins to believe that he can be a woman, and a woman begins to believe that she is a man and that she can assume the corresponding role. I said “assume the corresponding role” twice. This is why homosexuality and lesbianism increase. This is the reason. And I am not the one saying it; psychology says it.
It has been observed, he says, that the starting point—the principal starting point—is found there: in the way people dress today. Yet long ago, around 1500 BC, God condemned this very thing in order to prevent such a phenomenon. Besides, we must not forget that the ancient world practised this. It is not something belonging only to our own age, of course; it existed in the world outside Israel, among the pagan nations. God wished to protect the Hebrews, His people, when they settled in their new land, the Promised Land, so that they would not mingle with the surrounding peoples and would take care not to adopt such practices.
We are told of Sardanapalus, the last emperor—the last king—of the Assyrians. We even have a description of him by an ancient Greek author. Sardanapalus dressed in women’s clothing. A king, mind you! Just think how dreadful that was, and what an example he must have given his people. He wore women’s clothes, applied cosmetics like women, and lived accordingly. He ordered these words to be inscribed on his tomb: “Traveller,” it said, “eat and drink.”
“Indulge in sexual pleasure”—that is, eat, drink, and engage in sexual acts. Nothing else exists; only this. When Xenophon once passed by and read this inscription on the tomb of Sardanapalus, he said that such a way of life was fitting for no king, but only for a pig. For only a pig could say, “Eat, drink, and indulge in sexual pleasure.” Nothing more. Do you see these deviations, I ask you? Today we have such deviations in abundance. And did these same deviations not exist in Sodom and Gomorrah, which God destroyed? That takes us back to around 2100 BC. You see, therefore, my beloved, that when God commands us how we ought to dress,
this is not a matter of little importance; it is a matter of very great importance. So do not imagine that clothing is some insignificant detail. You see, we have spent an hour discussing this subject, and we have also examined its theological aspect. How, then, should we conduct ourselves? As I told you before: with modesty and simplicity. And to conclude our subject, let us mention a few practical matters. They are useful. In earlier times, people also wore patched clothing. Today people do not wear patched clothing. Have you ever seen anyone walking through our city in patched trousers? I once did, a year or two ago—I have told you this before. I saw a young man wearing patched trousers.
I followed after him because I wanted to say, “My child, I congratulate you for wearing patched trousers.” I did not manage to catch him; he was very young and walked too quickly. My beloved, teach your children to wear patched clothing too. If they say to you, “No one else wears it. Am I supposed to go to school in patched trousers?”—yes, trousers. There was even a time when it became fashionable to make holes in trousers merely to put patches on them. This was some years ago, perhaps fifteen years ago, around 1970. I had boarded the number 3 bus and was going toward the square. I lived nearby, in Kali Kardia. A soldier had just been discharged
from a local unit, an artillery unit—the 303rd, somewhere nearby. Now listen to this: as you know, soldiers leave in the uniform they are wearing. It was summer. So he had cut the legs of his trousers from the bottom up to the knees into strips, like a Native American costume. Naturally, when he sat down, his legs showed through and the strips of cloth hung down. I assure you, we were all staring at the spectacle. Of course, there is also this tendency: to wear something patched because it is fashionable, simply to attract attention; or to wear rags; or to wear those blue jeans that people scrubbed with a brush
to fade them in certain places; or, like sailors, to rub the broad sailor collar so that they would look like seasoned seamen. Fashions, attitudes, ideas. For if the collar—this type is called a sailor collar—is new, you look like a raw recruit, fresh and ready to be slapped around. Keep away from all these foolish antics, which you may think are merely amusing. They are dangerous things. I would tell you, my beloved: teach both yourselves and your children to wear your old clothing, and patched clothing as well. Let it be clean, ironed, and presentable. It does not matter if it is not made from expensive cloth. At times we may buy a suit made from expensive material, but with the intention of wearing it throughout our life. For when you have an expensive garment made, you say:
“I am buying it so that it will endure, so that it will last, and so that I may have it for a lifetime or at least for many years.” Indeed. If we conduct ourselves in this way, my beloved, then we may say that we possess what Saint Cyril sets before us here: that our dress and our clothing should be marked by simplicity and restraint, expressing nothing other than the simplicity and restraint of our soul. And something more: they should express our longing for the lost garment, that primordial garment which we possessed in Paradise and which we shall possess again when we enter the Kingdom of God.

Όπως έχει μια μαϊμού, εκτός βέβαια αν κανείς δέχεται ως προπάππο του τη μαϊμού, τον μύθο. Αλλά αυτά, όμως, είναι θεωρίες, αναπόδεικτα πράγματα, από επιστημονικής, εννοείται, πλευράς. Μόνο θεωρίες είναι, γιατί δεν θα υπήρχε καμία διαμάχη ανθρώπων περί επιστημονικών αληθειών. Και αυτό να το γνωρίζετε. Ποιο είναι το ένδυμα, λοιπόν, του ανθρώπου; Πρέπει να αναζητήσουμε ένα ένδυμα. Οι πρωτόπλαστοι, λέγει, όταν ήσαν στον Παράδεισο, ήσαν γυμνοί. Μας σημειώνει ο ιερός συγγραφεύς, ο Μωυσής. Όταν, όμως, λέγει ότι ήσαν γυμνοί οι πρωτόπλαστοι, αυτό το λέγει εν όψει από την οπτική γωνία ότι εκ των υστέρων έμειναν γυμνοί. Εάν δεν υπήρχε εκείνο που υπήρξε, ούτε ποτέ θα έγραφε ο συγγραφεύς ότι οι άνθρωποι ήσαν γυμνοί. Αλλά επειδή υπήρξε κάτι για να φανεί η γύμνωσις, γι’ αυτόν τον λόγο γράφει: ήσαν γυμνοί. Και συμπληρώνει ότι «ουκ ησχύνοντο». Ήσαν γυμνοί και δεν ντρέπονταν ο ένας τον άλλον. Αυτό, ξαναλέγω, λέγεται εν όψει των παρακάτω που συνέβησαν. Αλλά όταν αμάρτησαν οι πρωτόπλαστοι, τότε καταλάβαιναν ότι ήταν γυμνοί. Καλά, δεν το ήξεραν πιο μπροστά ότι ήταν γυμνοί; Δεν το έβλεπαν;
Δεν αναφέρονται. Αναφέρεται, όμως, το εξής στοιχείο, που αποτελεί στοιχείο της εικόνας του Θεού στον άνθρωπο: «Και αρχέτωσαν», λέγει, «πάντων των θηρίων και των ιχθύων» κτλ. Αρχέτωσαν, δηλαδή να είναι εκείνοι που θα έχουν το λεγόμενο αρχικό, από το άρχω. Είμαι ο άρχοντας, είμαι ο κύριος, έχω κατακυριεύσει την γη. Γι’ αυτό είπε και «κατακυριεύσατε», λέει, «αυτής της γης». Αλλά τι ήταν εκείνο που θα μπορούσε να κάνει τα ζώα να αισθάνονται τον άνθρωπο άρχοντά τους, ότι εξουσιάζονται υπό του ανθρώπου; Η θέωσις. Αυτή η Θεία Δόξα, αυτή η οποία ξανααποκτούμε με τον Ιησού Χριστό και που αυτή η δόξα, τα ζώα όταν την αντιληφθούν —εδώ είναι το καταπληκτικό— υποτάσσονται. Πρόχειρο παράδειγμα, γιατί πάρα πολλές φορές κατέφυγα σε αυτό το πρόχειρο παράδειγμα, και όσοι με έχετε ακούσει πολλές φορές θα λέτε: «Το έχει πει αυτό το πρόχειρο παράδειγμα». Ο Άγιος Σεραφείμ του Σάρωφ, ο οποίος έκανε παρέα με τις αρκούδες. Αλλά είναι γνώριμο το φαινόμενο ότι όλοι οι Άγιοι μπορούσαν να κάνουν παρέα με τα άγρια ζώα. Πόσες φορές σε βίους Αγίων αναφέρεται ότι μπορούσαν να χρησιμοποιούν λιοντάρι ως υποζύγιον κλπ. Ναι, ναι. Πώς το ζώο πειθαρχεί;
θα σε ακολουθήσω, δεν θα σε αφήσω. Όπου πας, θα έρθω κι εγώ». Γιατί ήξερε, κάτι θα συμβεί. Θα αναληφθεί. Πιο πολλά δεν μπορούσε να καταλάβει, όμως, ο προφήτης Ελισέος. Και εκεί του λέγει: «Ξέρω ότι θα φύγεις, αλλά θέλω, όταν θα φύγεις, να έχω διπλάσιο το χάρισμα της προφητείας». Του λέει: «Θα σου πετάξω τη μηλωτή μου και, αν πράγματι τη δεχθείς, δηλαδή πράγματι πέσει στα χέρια σου...» Γιατί δεν ήξερε ο προφήτης, θα χαθεί αυτό που φοράει; Είναι εκείνο που λέμε πώς θα είναι τα νέα μας σώματα. Ή, αν θέλετε, εκείνο που λέει ο Απόστολος Παύλος για τον εαυτό του, ότι ηρπάγη έως τρίτου ουρανού, με το σώμα του ή χωρίς το σώμα του, δεν ξέρω, λέγει. Με το σώμα του;
