Summary

Saint Cyril teaches that food belongs within God’s providential order, from humanity’s original plant-based diet to the permission to eat meat after the Flood. In the resurrection the complete human body will remain, but digestive and sexual functions will be rendered inactive because eating and marriage will no longer be necessary. The lecture concludes that Christians should receive food thankfully, practice moderation, avoid scandalizing others, and subordinate bodily appetite to salvation.

We are in paragraph 27 of Saint Cyril’s fourth Catechetical Lecture, which deals with the subject of the human diet, with food. Its title is “Concerning Foods.” At first glance, perhaps it may seem strange that Saint Cyril should concern himself with the subject of food. But it is not strange at all, because Holy Scripture also deals with food, and not only once. Indeed, bear in mind that when God created our first parents, He also appointed their food after creating them.

This appointment of food was made not only for our first parents, for human beings, but also for the animals. And what is striking is that God appointed the same food for both human beings and animals. This common food was nothing other than the plant kingdom. He did not single out or exclude anything in the plant kingdom as unfit, but confined their food to the plant kingdom alone, and not to the animal kingdom. “These are the things you shall eat,” God told our first parents, and the animals were to have the same food.

Later, however, after the Fall, our first parents began to eat meat. We find Abel tending flocks of sheep. At that time God silently tolerated the matter; and when the Flood came, God renewed His blessing. Indeed, God blessed Noah with the very same words with which He had blessed Adam and Eve. Once again He said, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and have dominion over it.” The only difference concerned food. There God said that they could now eat meat, just as they ate the produce of the plant kingdom. Thus the eating of animals began.

From Noah onward, therefore, this was officially permitted and blessed by God. God reserved only that which we always see Him reserve: when He gives something, He keeps something for Himself. He said, “You shall not, however, eat the blood of animals, because it is the seat of life, of the soul.”

Here He means life, not a noetic soul, because animals do not possess such a soul; He means their life. And if you do eat their blood—though you may eat their flesh, as Saint Cyril will tell us again here—then, He says, “I will require your life at the hand of the beasts,” meaning that the animals will tear you to pieces if you eat their blood. What I would like to emphasize now, and to dwell upon in what I am telling you, is that God appoints our food. Later, God also appointed food for His people, determining what they were to eat through the distinction between clean and unclean animals—a distinction that was not ontological but legal. By saying it was not ontological, we mean—excuse me—that animals are not clean or unclean in their actual being. God did not create some animals clean and others unclean. They are all clean. The distinction was legal: God imposed a restriction and said, “You shall not eat this animal.”

“I call it unclean.” It is as I told you once before, during the time for questions, concerning menstruation. God says, “The woman is unclean.” She is not ontologically unclean; she is legally unclean, because God declares her to be so. Likewise, in the Old Testament, a man who had a nocturnal emission was called unclean. This was not because semen is ontologically unclean, but because it was legally so. I believe the matter is clear and that you understand it. This is why God later showed the Apostle Peter a sheet filled with animals and told him, “Rise, Peter; kill and eat.” This is the well-known vision he received while in Joppa. Peter said, “Lord, I have never eaten anything common or unclean. How can You tell me to kill and eat?” And God said, “Do not make them unclean; do not call them common. What God has cleansed, you must not call common and unclean.” How had God cleansed them? This shows that the uncleanness was not ontological but legal. And it was legal simply because God said so—not because the animals were unclean in themselves, but because God willed it to be so, for pedagogical reasons and so forth. God has His plan. There are other reasons as well. Nevertheless...

What I wished to show you by this is that the matter of food is regulated. If you wish, consider fasting within our own Church. Is that not also a regulation of food? When we say, “I shall not eat meat today because it is Friday,” does that mean meat is unclean on Friday? No, it is not unclean. It means that I should not eat it today—not for ontological reasons, but for legal reasons, that is, because of the law of God. Food plainly occupies a central place in human life, and so it could not but be regulated by God. Nor could it fail to form a paragraph in the Catechetical Lectures of Saint Cyril. Saint Cyril therefore addresses this subject as well, and we shall now examine it. I have given you this somewhat...

lengthy introduction so that you may understand that this is no trivial matter. One might ask, “What now? Will theology—the word of God, as it were—even tell us what to eat?” Certainly, certainly. As I have explained to you, the matter is important. And now, my dear ones, we read: “Let the body be nourished with food, so that it may live and serve without hindrance.” The body, then, is nourished with food, with provisions. That is what the word “provisions” means: food. Hence we speak of starvation, meaning the absence of food. We say that a person is suffering from starvation—that is, he is not eating and is not well.

In other words, he is in danger of dying. The body, then, is nourished with provisions, with food, so that it may live and serve without hindrance. Serve what? The work of the soul, so that the whole human person may serve the work of his salvation. Here we have a very beautiful and thoroughly humane teaching. It is contained in this very simple sentence, which shows that the matter of food is ordained by God. God made living organisms—by “living” I mean those of the animal kingdom, though the plant kingdom is also alive—with a digestive system. Why did God make a digestive system?

His wisdom and love judged it fitting. This is how He willed it. I say this because in the Kingdom of God—where, of course, the animal kingdom will not exist, since animals will not rise from the dead and only the human being will be raised—there will be no digestive function. The digestive system itself will remain, because if it were absent, the human being would cease to be a complete human being. But it will no longer function. In the same way, the reproductive organs will remain, but there will be no Holy Matrimony—that is, there will be no sexual function. Thus there will be no Holy Matrimony.

If we remove the digestive system and the reproductive system—and I do not know what else we might remove—then what remains of the human being? How could we then speak of the Resurrection of the human person? What would rise? The entire former human being will rise, except that he will neither eat nor marry. Did not the Lord say that in the Kingdom of God they neither marry nor are given in marriage? And does not the Apostle Paul say that God will render both the stomach and food inoperative? As I explained to you on another occasion, the verb “to render inoperative” does not mean “to make disappear”; it means “to put out of operation.” Pay attention to this verb. Indeed, while we are on the subject, in one prayer we say—no, excuse me—

in a prayer said at a memorial service, we say: “You who have trampled down death and rendered the devil powerless.” Some think that the verb “to render powerless” means “to make disappear.” Once, unfortunately—though I learned my lesson from it—I changed the words and said them the other way around. I claimed that those who had composed the prayer had made a mistake—imagine my presumption, woe is me!—and I would say: “You who have rendered death powerless and trampled down the devil.” I reversed them. No, my dear ones. God trampled down death and rendered the devil powerless, because this verb also appears in the Wisdom of Solomon. It was there that I first understood it, that I began to grasp the matter, and I said, “We ought not—thank you—

to correct anything unless we have acquired a very good and profound knowledge of the matter.” We must not say, “This is wrong, and that is wrong.” It is dangerous. So I learned that the verb does not mean “to make disappear,” but “to put out of operation, to make inactive.” Thus the devil was not rendered powerless in the sense that he disappeared. Even after the Last Judgment, the devil will not disappear; he will be in Hell. What, then, does it mean? It means that God deprived him of the ability to act as he had acted before the Cross. Therefore, He rendered the devil powerless: He took away the work he had been doing and his power to bring about all that he brings about. In the end, the devil will be cast aside, but he will not disappear.

Here, when we say that God will render the digestive system inoperative, it clearly means that the digestive system will no longer perform its function. I shall repeat the phrase: “But God will render both the stomach and food inoperative.” We have focused on this verb because it is very important. Thus I shall have my stomach, but it will not function. I shall have my reproductive organs, but there will be no Holy Matrimony. These will no longer operate as functions. For now, however, God judges that I must eat in order to live. Then God will judge that, in order to live, I must not eat. You see how God determines these things. It lies within the power of God,

within the wisdom of God. This is how God judges it. Consequently, if I wished to go beyond certain limits and say, “I do not want to eat,” I would simply die. Forgive me; what I am about to say may not suit the sacredness of the occasion, but I shall say it. Just when the hodja had taught his donkey not to eat, the poor animal died. Well, how could it be otherwise? Will you train yourself not to eat? If you learn not to eat, you will die, because such a thing is pride. And do not imagine that this is unheard of. There are heretics—and there have been heretics throughout history—who have pursued such practices. Do not forget this. That is why I told you that this phrase is precious: nourish the body with the food God has given, so that it may live—so that it may live—

and serve the work of human salvation without hindrance. “Without hindrance” is the point. If I refuse to eat and become ill, how shall I serve the work of my salvation? This is why, concerning fasting, we must note that sometimes a person cannot endure it. He tells you, “If I do not eat oil, my legs tremble and I faint.” Or he says, “If I go to Church in the morning without eating something, my legs tremble and I faint.” So we ask: Why do we not eat when we go to Church? Because after eating, we cannot pray easily. Food always leaves a heaviness in the stomach, so we go with an empty stomach. I shall take only this reason; I shall not mention any other. There are other reasons.

Take note: there are other reasons. I am considering only this one. People therefore refrain from eating so that they may pray. But if, because I have not eaten, I cannot pray, would it not be better for me to eat a morsel of bread or a dry rusk precisely so that I can pray? I may therefore eat. When? When I have a valid reason. For in the end, I must be able to labor for my salvation without hindrance. One way or the other, the matter rests, we might say, with the judgment of the Church. “But let the body not surrender itself to luxury.” Here we now encounter a deviation. When God created Adam and Eve, He gave them a certain way of life. What did He tell them? That they could eat the fruit of all the trees. He told them that their diet would come from the plant kingdom. Could our first parents have understood—or rather even conceived—that they should begin turning food into luxury, nourishment into indulgence? Paradise is indeed called “the Paradise of delight.” But the delight of Paradise has nothing to do with the luxury of which Saint Cyril speaks here. Let me explain. When God said...

that they could eat from all the trees, from the fruit of every tree, this certainly meant that their senses also possessed perfection. We too possess a certain perfection of the senses, more or less, when we are in the prime of life and in vigorous health. Our sense of smell, for example, perceives the fragrance of fruit, and our sense of taste does likewise. Our eyes see a beautiful apple or another lovely fruit and take pleasure in it. Indeed, our eyes delight in fruit even before we eat it. Why do we go and choose fruit that is large and beautiful? I think our eyes delight in it as well. Thus the senses enjoy what they perceive. This is a form of enjoyment.

It is not forbidden. In this sense, Paradise was a place of delight and enjoyment. There is nothing sinful in that. But pay attention now. From the moment sin entered, things changed. Human beings then began to seek indulgence in food. Do you not understand? I shall express it another way. The sexual faculty includes an element of pleasure. Human beings did not invent it; God placed it there. God placed the element of pleasure there. Therefore it is sanctified. But it is connected with the begetting of children. Do not be alarmed, however, by what I am about to say.

I have offered further explanations on other occasions. When God said, “Be fruitful and multiply,” Holy Matrimony began afterward—that is, after the Fall. Holy Matrimony came after the Fall; take careful note of this. Holy Matrimony belongs outside Paradise. Within Paradise there was virginity. Therefore, when we return to Paradise, in the Kingdom of God there will be no Holy Matrimony, but what existed from the beginning: virginity. Let us not malign virginity, because that is where we shall return. And let us not overemphasize Holy Matrimony, because it is a form that passes away. Holy Matrimony is good and honorable, but it is a passing form. Let us not attach excessive importance to it. This does not mean that we should not love our wives. These are two different matters. Take note: they are two different matters. One is one thing, and the other is another.

Our wife is the neighbor closest to us, and we are obliged to love her. And so, my dear friends, Adam understood that he could have children with Eve, and for this reason he had very many children. In Adam, procreation was always connected with pleasure. But as mankind became more corrupt—for Adam was not corrupt; he fell, but he was not corrupt—when his descendants forgot God, God finally said of them, before the time of Noah: “My Spirit shall not remain with them, because they are flesh.” Here, “flesh” is meant in the broader sense.

In the broader sense, it means the carnal man. It does not mean the flesh, the body itself. It means the person whose whole outlook is carnal, the person who pursues luxury and sensual pleasures. People then ate and drank, not in order to live, but in order to enjoy themselves. And so it remains to this day. What do you think? Do we marry in order to have children—and does fornication have children of its own? Where are the children of fornication? Do we have nothing to eat at home? Why do we hurry off to restaurants to eat, and to eat tantalizing delicacies? John Chrysostom says the same thing. Interpreting a relevant passage in Genesis, he says: “Precisely because we lost that simplicity…”

“We invented,” he says, “cooks, elaborate dishes, luxuries, and so on.” Why, I ask you, do we hurry off to restaurants? For some people it has even become a habit. And how is the poor salary supposed to last—especially with all the strikes as well—when every evening we go out with our friends to eat at restaurants? My brother, do you not have a home where you can eat? Do you not have food at home? Do you not like the food in your own home?

Do you want to keep going to restaurants to eat? Is the food there tastier? Understand this: you are no longer seeking food in order to be nourished; you are seeking luxury in order to enjoy yourself. Do you see the difference? It is not a sin, then, to taste a piece of fruit or some food and say, “That is good.” Indeed, it would be a misfortune not to be able to do so. Once, you know, I had an operation on my nose. I had my septum removed.

For six months I could not tell what I was eating. There is nothing more dreadful. Whether I ate an egg or straw, it was all the same to me. And I said, “Am I going to remain like this?” Fortunately, God helped me, and my sense of smell returned. It is a very unpleasant thing not to have the use of your senses. God gave us our senses. Since He gave me a nose, am I not to smell? Am I not to taste what is sweet, bitter, or delicious with the taste buds of my tongue? God gave me these things. What, then, should I do? I should say, “Glory to God.” The sweet is good, the fruit is good, the food is good—Glory to God. This is why we say our prayer and glorify God when we finish our meal. Is there any sin in that? No. But when, as I explained to you, we leave the table in our own home to go off to disreputable establishments…”

“…to taste what the cooks prepare in places of entertainment, then it becomes luxury and self-indulgent pleasure. It is the same when I abandon Holy Matrimony and go after other women. Then I am no longer attending to what God has given and permitted me, but I keep going beyond it—further and further. That is what is sinful. Luxury in this sense is nothing but a substitute for the true delight experienced by Adam and Eve in Paradise. This is why Saint Cyril says so beautifully here: “The body must not, however, be given over to luxury.” You may eat, then, and glorify God. But take care not to stray into self-indulgence, into that something beyond…”

“…which God does not permit and which is the cause of many, many evils. You cannot imagine how many evils pleasure causes when it becomes the purpose of life, because then something intended as a means becomes an end in itself. Luxury is not the purpose of our life. “Regarding food, let these two principles guide us.” Let us also hold to these words concerning food. “For many stumble in matters of food.” Many people, he says, go astray concerning food. This is what I told you in the introduction: unfortunately, man has gone astray even in the matter of his nourishment. Some deviations may not be sinful, but they are harmful. Others are sinful. The sinful deviations are what I mentioned: the pursuit of pleasure through food. A person goes out to buy the most expensive thing. What is this obsession in man? You know, commerce itself is driven by it. Because we wanted to eat fruits from the Far East, trade expanded. How do you think the sea route between Europe and Asia was opened and commerce advanced? Explorers once discovered certain products of the East, as everyone knows—our familiar spices.

Cinnamon—although cinnamon was already known to the Hebrews—yes, it was known; but the other spices, what we call the spices of the Far East, eventually reached Europe. Europeans went wild over them. Then the merchants—who are always, forgive me, sharp-eyed opportunists—realized how much demand there was and how much money they could make. At once there were fleets and ships, sailing, of course, around the Cape of Good Hope. They came to grief there at that fearsome cape, and eventually the idea arose of opening the Suez Canal, followed by everything else we know. What do you think this whole history was about? Spices—spices that people could no longer do without.

You see, our life, commerce, politics, civilization, and the arts—everything is shaped by what we call the belly. The belly is a formidable force, especially when it goes astray. A formidable force indeed. So these deviations truly exist: the constant search for one delicacy after another. But there are also other deviations that cause harm and have by now become established, though they are not sinful. Pay attention: they are not sinful, but they are harmful. It is said that once fire was introduced into the preparation of food, it ruined the food, and man began putting poisons into his body.

That is what is said, and to a certain extent it is true. Once I begin cooking food, it starts to become poisonous. Let me give you a striking example, although by now all this has, of course, become accepted as normal. Take bread, for example. Do we eat plain wheat anymore? Of course not. We grind it, make it into bread, and bake it in the oven.

Fire has now been applied to it. Not all the components of the wheat are preserved; some are lost through baking. There is a loss. Yet what happens? We have baked it, and although it no longer harms us, neither does it benefit us very greatly. If we ate the wheat plain…”

But look at what happens. Medicine tells us today that if you bake it too long and it burns, the charred part is carcinogenic. It has therefore been observed that when I boil fish or meat, it naturally loses some of its nutrients. If I grill it, it is certainly much tastier, but on the grill parts of it begin to char. If I eat those blackened, charred portions of the meat or fish, they are carcinogenic.

There, then, is the harm. Yet, of course, I am not sinning.

The Ascension of the Theotokos, the Annunciation—do you understand? The subject of food is a vast matter. Today you see a tendency to return once again to a natural way of life. Perhaps one day we shall end up grazing in the fields again. “Some approach food offered to idols without concern, while others who practice ascesis condemn those who eat it.” In the time of Saint Cyril, who was also Archbishop of Jerusalem, the surrounding society was steeped in Judaism. As we know, the issue of food offered to idols was a pressing one. It is not an issue today, but it was then. What matters for us is the spirit of the whole matter, not the letter. In those days, animals were sacrificed to idols.

The meat was, of course, taken from the altar. The idolaters sacrificed a portion of it—that is, they burned it on their altars—and the rest of the animal was returned to its owner. If the owner had sacrificed more than one animal, or if it was a large animal, he took the meat to the butcher and sold it. Meat offered to idols was almost always found in the butcher shops, and people naturally went there, to the meat markets, to buy meat. The Apostle Paul uses the words for both the butcher and the meat market. People bought their meat there, but it had been offered to idols. The Jews of the Diaspora took particular care never to buy meat from those markets, because they knew this.

The command concerning food offered to idols was, of course, a commandment of God, given precisely to protect His people from idolatry, and meat sacrificed to idols was regarded as defiled. When Christianity came, it regarded the matter as nothing. The Apostle Paul attached no importance to it at all. Indeed, in one of his epistles he writes that if you sit down at a table, do not investigate whether the meat has been offered to idols or not; eat it. Do not investigate. But if the person beside you tells you that it was offered to idols, then do not eat it—not for the sake of your own conscience, but for the conscience of your brother, lest he be scandalized. For you know that there are no other gods.

There is one God, and therefore the meat itself is of no consequence. Unfortunately, however, this issue caused some disturbance in the Church, and people said that Paul was preaching strange and unusual things. When he returned to Jerusalem, the other Apostles called him to account. Yet he himself had rebuked the Apostle Peter in Antioch, because Peter too had been eating without making distinctions. But when certain brethren came from Judea, Peter pretended in their presence not to eat such food, so that he would not appear to be eating food offered to idols. Paul notes in one of his epistles: “I rebuked Peter to his face before them all.” And he tells him: “You are building again the things you destroyed.” In other words, Christianity takes no account of such distinctions, but now you are turning back again to Judaism.

I will not go into too much detail. The point is that the necessary maturity did not yet exist, especially among Jews who were leaving Judaism and coming to Christianity. They were not yet mature enough to understand that these things had a temporary character, just like the distinction between clean and unclean animals. It was therefore necessary for what is known as the First Apostolic Council to decree that Christians should abstain from food offered to idols, from animals that had been strangled, and from blood.

Saint Cyril refers to these things here because, as I explained, he lived close to the Apostolic era, in the middle of the fourth century, and because he was in Judea, where the matter remained especially pressing. Food offered to idols means an animal sacrificed to false gods, of course. A strangled animal is one that is not slaughtered but suffocated, as with a rabbit, so that its blood remains inside it. And then there is blood itself, which people were accustomed to drink. We shall see this a little further on, where Saint Cyril will explain it to us in detail. Thus he says that some people come and eat food offered to idols without giving the matter any consideration. But there are also others who do not eat it, who practice ascesis and continue abstaining from it, yet condemn those who do eat. And so they say, speaking always of fellow Christians: “Just look at him—he eats food offered to idols.” In such a case, what should we judge?

What should we say? What the Apostle Paul says in Romans 14:3: “Why do you judge your brother? Why do you judge him?” My dear friend, it is a greater evil to judge another person for what he eats than to say, “I do not eat food offered to idols.” Shall we apply this now to our own circumstances? You fast, my brother, and then rebuke others because they do not fast. It is one thing to offer counsel and say, “My brother, look, today is Friday; do not eat that.” This we ought to do. We should not leave the other person in his indifference. Let us offer, not a rebuke, but a word of counsel, because perhaps he has simply never thought about it.

You and I may be at work with our colleagues, and someone takes out a sandwich and begins to eat. Something struck me just two or three months ago. It was during the Nativity Fast, and in fact it was a Wednesday or Friday; I do not remember which. We went to a builder’s yard to get some iron, and we had to stay there a long time while they prepared it, weighed it, and loaded it. Around noon, the workers and craftsmen each took out something to eat. Someone bought a good number of cheese pies from a traveling vendor and brought them for the others. One man had brought a meal cooked with oil from home. Everything they ate was fasting food with oil, and we could see them right beside us.

That man was fasting, and we were glad to see it. He could simply have said to his coworkers, “Come on, fellows, today is Friday; do not eat cheese pie.” Just like that, very simply, as a word of advice. That is perfectly acceptable. But to condemn the other person and say, either to his face or behind his back, “Aren’t you ashamed? Aren’t you ashamed to be eating?”—no, my brethren, not that. My dear ones, not that. Have you noticed that some people reduce all their spirituality and all their religious devotion to fasting, and then fall into condemnation? If you see someone who fasts condemning another person who does not fast, even though that person may have reasons for eating,

then you should understand what is happening. Test this, observe it, and you will remember my words. That person’s religious devotion is limited entirely to fasting. He has no other spirituality; that is where his whole spiritual life begins and ends, and he is wretched. He is wretched. Sadly, we have many such Christians. Therefore, we must not condemn. The other person may have reasons, or perhaps the grace of God has not yet come to help him fast. God knows; God will help him. You should fast, but do not condemn. John Chrysostom has a beautiful saying that has just come to mind: “You do not eat meat, yet through accusation you sink your teeth into the flesh of your brother.”

You tear your brother to pieces with your accusations while saying, “I do not eat meat.” It is a very beautiful saying. “And in various ways the souls of some are defiled in matters concerning food, because they fail to understand the beneficial reasons for eating.” In other words, they do not discern the various valid and beneficial reasons, such as illness, old age, travel, and so forth. And people often accuse others without cause. “For we fast and abstain from meat, not because we hate it as something abominable, but because we await our reward, so that, rising above material things, we may enjoy the spiritual and noetic table.”

“And so that, having now sown in tears, we may reap with rejoicing in the age to come.” What a beautiful and precious teaching this is. What we have heard here gives, we might say, a decisive answer to the Manichaeans, who believed that foods themselves contained souls and that eating food amounted to murder. Many dreadful things have appeared throughout history. But why do I speak only of history? What does modern Buddhism believe? Does Buddhism not teach that cows are sacred animals, that all animals have souls, and that you cannot eat any of them? You know that Indian Buddhists do not eat meat. They do not eat meat because they believe that slaughtering and eating an animal is murder. One of those notorious Beatles who corrupted the world, and who met a terrible end—one of them who was murdered—had bought an entire farm in America, had he not? He kept several thousand cows there, buying them from slaughterhouses so that they would not be killed. He had meanwhile embraced Buddhism,

and because Buddhism teaches this, he believed that cows were sacred animals. So, to save the cows from the slaughterhouses, he bought them—he was wealthy—and kept them on his farm. Why?

They believed that the cow was a god, a sacred animal. These are deviations from the truth. This is why those in Greece today who accept Buddhist beliefs unfortunately reach the point of refusing to eat meat. One friend who had taken up this Buddhist teaching ate neither meat nor fish nor eggs. How did I discover it? How did it come to light? I asked him, “Tell me, why will you not eat these things?” I discovered that it was the result of Buddhist teaching. I told him, “You are sinning gravely; you are sinning gravely.” Just how gravely, we shall see a little further on, for the Apostle Paul also speaks of it. But if you wish, you may refrain from eating meat.

If you do so because you think meat is harmful, or that it contains toxins, or for some similar reason, that is your right. If you do not like eggs, or if you abstain for reasons of ascesis, that is your right. But to say, “I do not eat it because it is abominable,” or, “It is wrong to eat it because it has a soul”—that is sin. And I had barred him from Holy Communion. “Unless you cast off this belief, you will not receive Holy Communion.” He later came and assured me that he had rejected that belief, and I allowed him to receive Holy Communion. This is an exceedingly serious matter. It is profoundly heretical. “For we fast,” it says, “and abstain from meat.” We abstain: we fast from wine, and we abstain from meat.

We do this when we fast, and some people do it throughout their lives. We do not abstain because we hate these foods as abominations—“not hating them as abominable”—but because we await a reward. What reward? “So that, rising above material things,” going beyond the things perceived by the senses, we may enjoy spiritual things and the noetic table. My dear ones, this is the proper understanding, and monasticism also maintains it. Whenever monasticism says that a particular food is not to be eaten, it is not for the reasons I mentioned, but because it seeks to rise higher. And what does “higher” mean?

It means leaving material things behind, as it were, transcending them in order to enter a more spiritual life. It is not that meat is unclean or abominable; it is a spiritual matter.

“Those who now sow in tears”—so that what we sow with tears today, we may reap with rejoicing tomorrow, in the age to come. Thus, throughout the history of Israel, whenever there was fasting, or when people such as the Prophet Elijah and Saint John the Baptist ate nothing but the simplest food, this was the reason. It was not because food was something disgusting. As I have told you, it was a transcending of material things. Shall I say more? It is a foretaste of the Kingdom of God before the Kingdom of God comes. Since we would die if we ate nothing, what do we do? We do not eat every kind of food,

so that we may remember that one day we will not eat at all. It is a tangible way of keeping the remembrance of the Kingdom of God. This is praiseworthy, and it keeps us from losing the remembrance of the Kingdom of God. Even if this abstinence is not permanent, it can at least be observed periodically, as it is during the fasting seasons. We say, “Now we will not eat meat; we will not drink milk; we will not eat cheese.” Besides fasting being a matter of obedience to the Church, it is also, as I explained, a transcending of material things, so that the remembrance of the Kingdom of God may remain vivid within us. “Do not despise any who eat, or who partake of food because of bodily illness.”

So, if you are able to undertake a particular ascesis, do not, he says, despise those who eat or who take food because of bodily illness. You may be able to go without meat, but another person is ill and must eat meat. Do not condemn him. Saint Cyril tells us to be very careful about this. And truly, my dear ones, this is extremely important. There is a Canon of our Church which says that a person is released from fasting when there are reasons of health. The Church therefore approaches the matter with great compassion. If the question of food were ontological—if the food itself were unclean—there could be no exception. But because it is not an ontological matter, but a matter of ascesis and of remembering, as I have told you, our renewed nature

and the Kingdom of God, the Church acts differently in different cases and exercises freedom. To one person she says one thing, and to another something else, because one has the strength to fast while the other does not. It is very simple. “Nor should you reproach those who use a little wine for the sake of their stomach and their frequent illnesses.” Is this not the phrase from the Apostle Paul addressed to Timothy? He says not to accuse those who use a little wine. For the Apostle Paul writes to Timothy: “No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent illnesses.”

Use a little wine for your stomach and your many illnesses. It seems that Timothy was physically frail and often ill, and so Paul tells him, “Do not drink only water.” This is the instruction: “Use a little wine.” It is very significant that Saint Cyril quotes the Apostle Paul’s entire phrase. And indeed, we might say that some people need to drink a little wine, as do laborers who work in the fields and elsewhere. In any case, the use of wine is not sinful. Pay attention to this point: it is not sinful.

Its abuse is sinful. Pay careful attention to this. When we fast from oil, we do not drink wine. Therefore, we must not imagine that wine may be placed on our table without restraint. I will say it once again, in case anyone’s mind was elsewhere and did not hear me: when we fast from oil, we do not drink wine. But if someone has a reason to eat oil during a period when we abstain from it—and you know that throughout the year we abstain from oil on Wednesdays and Fridays—the dispensation to eat oil does not mean that he may also permit himself wine, saying, “Since I eat oil, I will have wine as well.” No, because now you are seeking wine for enjoyment. So, not then. You eat oil to gain strength; wine does not give strength.

Wine does not give strength; it has other properties. Oil gives strength, and bread gives strength. Let us therefore pay attention to this. We cannot drink wine at all times. During Great Lent, five days of the week are without oil. That means five days. If we are ill, we may perhaps eat even meat. But we can still fast from wine; that is, we will not drink wine. When may we drink wine during Great Lent? Only on Saturday and Sunday, when oil is permitted, because permission for wine always accompanies permission for oil. “And do not condemn them as sinners.” Do not condemn someone who eats by calling him a sinful person. No, he is not sinning or breaking the fast;

he has a need. You see how beautifully and compassionately these matters are treated. “Nor should you hate meat as though it were something alien.” Do not hate meat as though it were foreign to God’s creation, as though it were not created by God, or as though the devil had made meat and animals. Stop—be very careful. “For the Apostle knew such people when he said”—the Apostle knew people of this kind when he said that they forbid Holy Matrimony and abstain from foods, though God created all these things “to be received with thanksgiving by the faithful.” Does the Apostle not indeed say this? The time will come when they will forbid Holy Matrimony and say

—you have encountered this in Holy Scripture, though perhaps without knowing why it was said or what it means—“Do not handle, do not taste, do not touch.” This refers to food. These beliefs were held by the Gnostics, those well-known heretics. Paul had them in mind, and he also foresaw that Gnosticism would embrace Christianity and become an exceedingly terrible enemy—perhaps the most terrible of all Christianity’s enemies—because it did not reject Christianity but embraced it with a deadly embrace. Therefore, inspired by God, Paul prophesies and says, “The time will come when people will forbid Holy Matrimony.” He does not mean virginity, for Paul himself was unmarried,

but rather the claim that Holy Matrimony is unclean. Did you hear that? They will say that Holy Matrimony is unclean and that the seed of generation is unclean. In that sense they call Holy Matrimony unclean, unlike celibacy, which is a transcending of it. And they will forbid people to eat: “Do not handle, do not taste, do not touch. Do not eat this; do not eat that. Do not eat the fig,” they say, “because it has a soul within it. Let it fall from the fig tree first, and only then eat it.” You know, Saint Cyril speaks of these things only briefly here. He will discuss them at length later, elsewhere in his catechetical lectures. He says, “The Gnostic, the Manichaean, will come and knock at your door and say, ‘Give me a little bread to eat.’” Why does he ask you for bread? So that he will not have to go and reap in the field. And he refuses to reap because he believes that by cutting down the ears of grain he would be committing murder.

by killing the stalks of grain. And when you give him the bread to eat, do you know what he says to himself? Listen, and I will tell you: “Bread, I am eating you. But I neither harvested you nor baked you. May the one who harvested you be harvested in the same way, and may the one who baked you be baked in the same way. As for me, I neither harvested you nor baked you; I am only eating you.” Wonderful! It is like the Millennialists who say, “You fool, go off to war and get yourself killed. I will not take up arms, but I still want my freedom here, and I want to be free to spread my heresy.” Do you see? So tell that heretic, tell that Manichaean:

“Get out of my sight! I will give you neither bread nor anything else.” You see, these things have existed and, as I tell you once again, they still exist. And even if a particular error no longer exists, we grasp the spirit behind such things and use it to judge whatever may confront us in life. “When abstaining, honor the food. Do not abstain from it as though it were abominable, even though you will receive a reward; rather, since it is good, pass beyond it for the sake of the better spiritual realities set before you.” You see, Saint Cyril insists on this again and again. If you abstain, he says, do not abstain because you regard foods as abominable. You simply rise above them and keep the spiritual blessings in your nous, your spiritual intellect. I fast and do not eat because I keep the Kingdom of God in mind. But

let us also look at the next paragraph. “Guard your soul carefully, lest you eat anything offered to idols.” Do not eat food offered to idols, for the reasons I explained at the beginning. “Concerning these foods, instructions were given not only by me, but also by the Apostles and by James, the bishop of this Church.” This took place under Saint James, when the First Apostolic Council was held. “And the Apostles and the priests write a general letter to all the Gentile believers, directing them first of all to abstain from food offered to idols, and then also from blood and from anything strangled,” as I explained to you. These things are written in Acts, chapter 15, verse 29. “For many people, being brutish and living like dogs, lap up blood without restraint.”

“Imitating the ways of the fiercest wild beasts, they devour strangled animals without restraint. But you, servant of Christ, when you eat, eat with reverence. And enough has now been said concerning food.” In other words, he says that some people are brutish and live like dogs—“living like dogs”—licking and lapping up blood. You know, when foxes enter a henhouse and find many hens, they do not eat them. They strangle them and drink their blood. If there is only one hen in the henhouse, they take it and leave. That is, they are not satisfied with blood alone. Human beings do this as well. I remember the following from the time of the German occupation, my dear ones: the Germans brought in from Romania

cans of blood from the slaughterhouses. They congealed it, and those cans contained nothing but blood, which, of course, they ate. Take care, he says, not to do this, because in this way you imitate the animals. And as God says—as I explained to you—when a person drinks blood, especially raw blood, he becomes savage. And to see that this is so, there are criminals who, after slaughtering someone with a knife, as they say—

Δηλαδή να πεθάνει. Τρέφεται λοιπόν το σώμα με σιτία, με φαγητά, για να ζει και να υπηρετεί ανεμπόδιστα. Τι να υπηρετεί; Το έργο της ψυχής, που έτσι ο ολόκληρος ο άνθρωπος πρέπει να υπηρετήσει το έργο της σωτηρίας του. Εδώ έχουμε μία πολύ ωραία και εντελώς ανθρώπινη τοποθέτηση. Μέσα σε αυτόν τον πάρα πολύ απλό στίχο, που καθορίζει ότι το θέμα της τροφής είναι από τον Θεό. Ο Θεός έκανε τους ζωντανούς οργανισμούς — ζωντανούς εννοώ του ζωικού βασιλείου, γιατί ζωντανό είναι και το φυτικό βασίλειο — έκανε τους ζωντανούς οργανισμούς με πεπτικό σύστημα. Γιατί ο Θεός έκανε πεπτικό σύστημα;

επινοήσαμε», λέγει, «μαγείρους και φαγητά και τρυφές και λοιπά και λοιπά». Γιατί, παρακαλώ, τρέχουμε στα κέντρα; Και μάλιστα είναι συνήθεια σε μερικούς. Και πού να φτάσει ο ταλαίπωρος μισθός; Δώσ’ του και οι απεργίες παραπέρα. Όταν κάθε βράδυ βγαίνουμε με τους φίλους μας να φάμε στα κέντρα. Αδελφέ μου, δεν έχεις σπίτι να φας; Σπίτι δεν έχεις να φας; Δεν σου αρέσει το φαγητό του σπιτιού σου;

πίστευε, αφού ο Βουδισμός αυτό διδάσκει, ότι οι αγελάδες είναι ιερά ζώα. Για να γλιτώσει λοιπόν τις αγελάδες από τα σφαγεία, τις αγόραζε αυτός, πλούσιος ήταν, και τις είχε μέσα εκεί στο αγρόκτημά του. Γιατί;
