Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem’s Fourth Catechetical Lecture presents a concise outline of teachings that will later be developed, continuing from the soul to the body and chastity. Biblical precedents—including Elijah, Elisha, the Sons of the Prophets, and Philip the Deacon’s virgin daughters—demonstrate the deep roots of ascetic and communal religious life. Those practicing virginity must not become proud or despise marriage, which remains honorable when faithful, undefiled, disciplined, and ordered toward prayer.

Beloved, we are now in the Fourth Catechetical Lecture of Saint Cyril of Jerusalem. In this lecture, he gives us a brief account of several points, because he intends to treat them much more fully later on. And because...
His listeners, his catechumens, might perhaps forget what he would tell them at length, so he gives them a summary—a very brief summary—of subjects that he will later develop in detail. This is a pedagogical element—or rather, forgive me, a teaching device—as I was telling you. He wants to help his listeners gain a general outline of the subjects before he later enters into the details of those same subjects. Last time, our subject was the body. Having spoken, of course, about the soul, he now speaks about the body. We did not finish the subject, so we continue: “And concerning chastity.”
“Let the order of monks and virgins hear this first, those who attain in this world a life equal to that of the angels; and afterward, let the rest of the people of the Church hear it as well. A great crown is laid up for you, brethren. Do not exchange something of great worth for a momentary pleasure. Hear the Apostle saying: ‘Let no one be sexually immoral or profane like Esau, who sold his birthright for a single meal.’ Since, then, you have been enrolled in the angelic books because of your resolve to live in chastity, take care that you are not erased from them again through...”
“...the committing of sexual immorality.”
Last time, of course, he told us that the body does not sin by itself; it is the soul that sins and draws the body toward both good and evil. Now he comes to something more specific, because the matter of chastity naturally concerns the body in a particular way. The Apostle speaks those mysterious words: “Every sin that a man commits is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body.” And this is mysterious. For although it is primarily the soul that commits sin, and then the body—just as in other matters, when someone steals...
My soul desires to steal, and my hand is used to carry out the theft, and so forth. Why, then, does he say that every sin is outside the body, but that whoever commits sexual immorality sins against his own body? This is a mystery that perhaps we cannot understand, for there are many mysteries. Do not imagine that this is a simple matter. Do not imagine that at all. To give you some measure by which to understand it, we say that a person who has committed a sexual sin has an impediment to the priesthood. What does this sexual sin entail? Is its significance moral? If it is moral, then, like every sin, it is forgiven. Does it have an ontological significance? Certainly, it too is forgiven, but it seems that...
...it must leave something behind. What might it leave behind? Is it a matter of fitness or unfitness? Is it because someone who has once committed such a sin might return to it? Many considerations have their place, but at the heart of these Canons of our Church lies the fact that this sin cannot be undone. As a sin, it is revoked and forgiven; yet as regards the priesthood, its consequence is never revoked. It is irreversible, remains uncorrected, and ultimately remains an impediment, an obstacle. You may wonder why. It is very difficult. We might ask whether the matter has an ontological dimension.
It does not have merely a moral dimension. But what does it mean for a sin to have an ontological effect upon our very being? We cannot understand this at all. To give you an analogous picture: this body committed certain sins; it will die, decay, and go down into the grave, and then it will rise renewed. The Fathers of our Church say—and Saint Cyril himself will say this, though much later, when we reach that point—that this body will bear its former sins upon it and will be unfit to enter the Kingdom of God. Yet that body decayed and was made new—or rather, the old body becomes new. Do the sins, then, leave some stamp upon it, something belonging to its very hypostasis? What can I say? This is why it remains a mystery.
Let us therefore be attentive—very attentive—to the matter of sexual sins, because they relate especially to the body. “And concerning chastity, let the order of monks and virgins hear this first, those who attain in this world a life equal to that of the angels.” Earlier, then, he says that the teaching concerning chastity, purity, and cleanness should first be heard by those living the monastic life and by the virgins, the order of Virgins, who form within this world an order equal to the angels—that is, equal to the Angels—because to attain such a life within this world is no small thing. I would like to comment briefly on this verse. It is very much worth our attention.
My beloved, in what period are we? Around AD 350. We are in the middle of the fourth century. In reality, monasticism has not yet been organized. Bear in mind that Saint Athanasius the Great, who lived slightly before Saint Cyril—no, let me put it differently: Saint Athanasius the Great took part as a deacon in the First Ecumenical Council in 325. Here we are now, twenty-five years after the First Ecumenical Council. Saint Athanasius the Great is still alive. He was connected with Saint Anthony the Great. Saint Anthony, of course, was not...
...the one who inaugurated the solitary life, but he was the one who established its measure and standard, particularly the eremitic form of that life. He gave it its measure. And Saint Athanasius wrote the Life of Saint Anthony at the request of the Christians of the West, in Italy. He sent them this work, which, as he himself says, was written in haste.
He was running out of time, because the ships would soon stop sailing when winter came. He wanted them to have the book before the sailing season ended, so that they would not have to wait until spring. There he records the life of Saint Anthony. This is the well-known Life that has been preserved for us, written by Saint Athanasius the Great. We see, then, that monasticism had not yet been organized...
...into cenobitic monasteries and the other forms. Yet what do we observe? We observe that it already existed. We observe that it existed. Do you know what that means? It means that monasticism is a genuinely ecclesial institution. Where are those who claim that monasticism stands outside the Church and outside the Gospel, that it has no connection with the Church, and that it is a product of later centuries? Where are those who say such things? Monasticism is inseparably bound to the Church; it is inseparably bound to Christianity. Indeed, if you wish to know precisely what monasticism is, it is this: the fullest and most exact realization of the Gospel in life.
For such a realization is not easy within the world. That is what monasticism is. At every moment, monasticism preserves the authenticity of putting the Gospel into practice. It has done this throughout every age, even if only in a relative way. Nevertheless, at every moment it preserves this witness. This is the point. I once said something—and I have said it many times—so let me say it once more. Throughout history, various ecclesiastical structures come and go. At this moment, the parish structure is undergoing a crisis. I do not know how many will agree with what I am about to say, but it is a reality.
The parish structure is, of course, one way of shepherding the people of God. We say that we have a particular church, served by certain priests and deacons. The Greek word for parish denotes what lies within defined boundaries: within and boundary. In other words, it covers a specifically bounded area. Thus we say that the parish of Saint Nicholas is enclosed by such-and-such streets. It is therefore a definite district, and we must labor within that particular district. What must we do there? We must shepherd the people of God and carry out our pastoral ministry.
Today, then, this parish structure is undergoing a crisis. I think the gravest form of its crisis—take note, it is a structure, simply a structure; the Church has known various such structures, and it does not trouble us if we change them—is this: at one time the bishop could no longer reach everyone, so priests were appointed and the parish structure arose, because Christians had become numerous. Earlier, when the bishop was sufficient for everyone, he gathered them all together. For example, the book of the Apostolic Constitutions says, “The bishop shall gather the people.” It does not say the priest; it says the bishop. He shall gather the people, and so forth. Today, the structure is that one bishop has a great many parishes spread over a wide area. We cannot reach everyone.
These structures can change; I repeat once again that they are only structures. So the parish structure is undergoing a crisis. I believe, my beloved, that the most important aspect of the crisis in today’s parish is secularization. A considerable worldly element and a worldly mentality have entered into this structure. Another product of this secularization is the following: the spiritual centers we establish are—just imagine—more cultural than spiritual. Do you know what that means?
We ought to compare this book—a catechesis given by Saint Cyril in the fourth century to those preparing for Baptism—and examine the substance of his work. Then we should compare it with our own catechetical lessons, the sermons we preach from the pulpit, and the activities we conduct in our spiritual centers. We fall very far short. We could say that what is now being offered is primarily cultural. Sadly, even our sermons have taken on this cultural element. Sadly so. And this does not excuse us. It would be another matter if we had already succeeded in giving the people a complete catechesis and then added a few cultural activities; that would not be a sin. But when...
...the spiritual element is absent and has been replaced by the cultural element, that is sinful. To be more specific, in a spiritual center, for example, we may show films, slides, and so forth...
...and provide games, while failing to offer systematic catechesis. And even if we suppose that we offer a little catechesis, it is very little compared with the great amount of everything else being offered. And even that little is adulterated. Let me give you a brief example. In a parish in Athens, because it was very large, had a large spiritual center, and was extremely active, they hired, on a salary...
a lay theologian who at that time had no official teaching post. He was hired to supervise the children and to serve, so to speak, as the coordinator of the educational program or spiritual center. On one occasion, he gathered all the children together and told them, “Children, listen: we are now entering Great Lent, and we must fast.” The priest in charge of the church happened to be present, and he interrupted the theologian—which was itself very poor pedagogy. In front of the children, he said, “Well, Mr. So-and-so, we cannot speak to children about fasting nowadays.” My dear Father, what should we tell them, then? Whether they prefer the music of Wagner or Beethoven?
Whether they like traditional music or rebetiko? Whether we should take an excursion to Mount Parnitha, Mount Olympus, or Mount Kissavos, bring back slides, and show them at our club? Is that what we should talk about? We may do those things as well, but they cannot come at the expense of the true catechesis of our people. So, beloved, I have sincerely given you just one example, one small sample. I tell you honestly that the parish as a pastoral structure is undergoing a very serious crisis. You may ask, “What hope is there for renewal?”
Do I say this because I am a monk? No. You know that I have never condemned Holy Matrimony.
You know that I have great love for married people. Nevertheless, everything has its proper place, and I want you to understand that I am speaking objectively. At this moment, monasticism must help. Monasticism presents—or ought to present—an image of a more authentic way of life. You see, then, that monasticism is not an obsolete institution. First of all, it is an institution of the Church; it is her child and is inseparably bound to her. Indeed, monasticism has its roots in the Old Testament itself. I could speak to you of Saint John the Baptist, the greatest of all.
“The greatest among those born of women.” Or shall I speak of the Prophet Elijah, the greatest of the Prophets? Yes, the Prophet Elijah is the greatest of the Prophets—not Isaiah, but Elijah, who was taken up bodily into heaven. Or shall I speak of the Prophet Elisha? I tell you this: in the days of the Prophets Elijah and Elisha, there was what was called the School of the Prophets. Samuel had founded this School of the Prophets. Samuel was married—yes, he was married—yet the Prophets Elijah and Elisha were unmarried. And we learn from a chronicle—take note, for these so-called Sons of the Prophets also kept the chronicles of Israel’s history, and we owe some of the texts of the Old Testament to them—
We owe them deep gratitude, just as we owe deep gratitude to monasticism, because through it many works have reached us down to the present day—not only works of the Fathers of the Church, but also works by secular Greek authors. We owe them our gratitude. Now, in that chronicle we find the following incident: they went to cut timber, it says, to build a hut—a hut in the forest outside Jericho, near the Jordan River. Yes, some of these so-called Sons of the Prophets were married and some were unmarried, and they lived in the forest in a cenobitic, communal way of life. Can you imagine? The roots of monasticism are found within the Old Testament itself. I mention these things only briefly.
I have mentioned them so that you may see how closely all this is bound up with the whole teaching of our faith. These things are not disconnected or spurious, as some now dare to claim that monasticism is spurious. It is those who say such things who are false. In the present situation, however, monasticism comes to offer help, as I have explained, and to bring renewal. Saint Cyril now addresses monastics and says, “Let the discourse on chastity first be heard”—that is, before the others—“by the order of monastics.” In other words, they must realize how important chastity is, as must the order of virgins.
As you know, our Church also had women’s monasticism. It did not have the form we know today, but its essence was the same: virginity, lifelong virginity. I will remind you of just one example, without saying too much, because I have already spent nearly half an hour on this first point, and I do not know when I shall finish. Remember the four daughters of Philip the Deacon, who were virgins and lived in virginity in their own home. The book of the Acts of the Apostles in the New Testament says that they lived as virgins and prophesied. Let this answer those who claim that women’s monasticism is also something spurious. And prophecy—
has, of course, a broad meaning: both foretelling something that is to happen and teaching, in the sense of inspired instruction. Thus, within the Church—or, more precisely, within the church building—there were separate places for the children, the virgins, the widows, and the married. Among the women, the children stood at the front, then the virgins, then the widows, and then the married women. And, please note, the virgins received Holy Communion first, followed by the widows and then the married women—forgive me.
This was the practice of the Church. Do you see? These things are not foreign to the Church. Therefore, let these words concerning chastity be heard first by the monastics and then by the virgins, those who attain an angel-like way of life while still in this world. Of course, this does not mean that Holy Matrimony is condemned—God forbid. Each way of life has its proper place. And immediately afterward comes the phrase, “and subsequently the rest of the people of the Church.” Here “subsequently” means in relation to what came before: in due order, after them. So the rest of the people are to hear these words after those who live in virginity and monasticism.
All the rest of the people must hear them too. So, then, we cannot separate monasticism from the people of God who live in Holy Matrimony, go about their work, and so forth. We cannot separate them when it comes to keeping the law of God. What do some people say? “Those things are for the monks. They are not for us.” Do the monks have one Gospel and you another? Beloved, there is one Gospel, and God’s commandments are common to everyone. It is another matter that the married person has more distractions, while the unmarried person is freer from them. But Paul says plainly to married people, “I would tell you not to marry—do not be scandalized by this—so that you may be free from distractions.”
“But if you wish, marry. Do as you wish.” If you want, read these things in chapter 7 of First Corinthians. The Apostle Paul speaks plainly there. But the Gospel is one. And especially in the matter of chastity, which is our subject here, you cannot say that a monk must remain pure while a layman, a young person living in the city, may commit sexual sin. And when you say to him, “Why are you committing sexual sin? You must be chaste and preserve your purity,” he cannot answer, “Those things are for monks,” because the commandment of chastity is quite simply for everyone.
“A great crown, therefore, is laid up for you, brethren.” A great crown is laid up for us—for you, brethren. Notice this beautiful and very realistic saying, which anyone with a philosophical mind will duly appreciate: “Do not exchange something of great worth for a momentary pleasure.” Of course, he is not referring to Holy Matrimony, but to sexual sin, as he makes clear immediately afterward: “Listen to the Apostle, who says, ‘Let there be no sexually immoral or profane person like Esau, who for one meal’”—for a single plate of food—“‘sold his birthright.’” What, then, is he saying here? “Do not exchange something of great worth for a momentary pleasure.” The momentary pleasure is sexual sin.
So, he says, brethren, do not give away or sell your birthright. After all, the birthright of Esau, which Jacob received from him, did not in itself possess such very great worth—let us put it that way for a moment, although Jacob was an ancestor of the Messiah. What has great worth is what you personally labor to attain, and here that is chastity. Therefore, he says, do not exchange it for a momentary pleasure. What is sexual sin, really? A momentary pleasure. That is all it is. If we were to dissect pleasure and examine it, what would we find? If you will permit me, I shall tell you.
How long does this pleasure last? Only the briefest moment. And do you know exactly what it is? Listen.
It is a stimulus that travels along a nerve to the brain and produces the impression of pleasure. Gentlemen, if we were to sever that nerve, there would be no sensation of this pleasure whatsoever. Do you see? There would be no sensation. The message of pleasure would not reach the brain, for that is where it arrives. In other words, do you know what it is? If we could place it under a spectroscope, we would find an oscillation in the nervous system—in that particular nerve which carries the message of what we call pleasure. That is all it is; in other words, it amounts to a deception. Pleasure is a deception. Truly, I tell you, it is a deception.
But a philosophical mind—yes, a truly philosophical mind—will ultimately reach this conclusion. Today, beloved, we have come to say that this universe we see is nothing but vibration. It is not as it appears to us; in reality, it is vibration. We say, “This object is motionless. If I leave it for ages upon ages, it will remain as it is.” Who told you it is motionless? Within it are particles in constant motion. Why, then, does it appear motionless? Because it is a closed system. That is why it appears still. In reality, its particles are constantly moving. What we see, then, is not the true picture of things. Likewise, when I experience pleasure, it is not the reality it appears to be. I tell you again: it is an oscillation within the nervous system.
Of the whole nervous system? No, of that particular part of it—of that specific nerve, forgive me. Nothing more. Have you heard what the Father says? Basil the Great asks, “Does that beautiful face tempt you? If you draw near”—of course, in those days they did not have magnifying lenses; today we could see this much more clearly—“you will see that what you have fallen in love with is full of pits and furrows: that skin.” He says that it is full of hollows; it is not beautiful but ugly. Indeed, Basil the Great says, “Whenever temptation comes upon you, think of this.” In other words—
the philosophical mind dissects and examines things, and so is not carried away by their outward appearance. For this reason Saint Cyril says, “Having therefore been enrolled in the angelic books because of your resolve to live in chastity, take care that you are not erased from them again through sexual immorality.” Take care that God does not erase you from the book of those who live the angelic life and that you do not return once more to sexual sin. “And again, having attained chastity, do not become puffed up with pride against those who have entered the married state.”
This is a very important point. You know that people often look down upon one another, which is both foolish and dangerous: the unmarried condemn Holy Matrimony, and the married condemn celibacy. In his discourse On Virginity, Saint John Chrysostom says, “Do not condemn Holy Matrimony in order to exalt virginity.” Do you know what this resembles? It is like a man who cannot rise above another in stature, so he brings the other man down through accusation and slander. He says, “That man is a thief, a pickpocket, a fraud, a scoundrel.” By lowering the other man, he raises himself. Yet deep down—
You know, when we accuse someone else, we are trying to exalt ourselves. We should understand that. But exalting ourselves is pride. So what we are dealing with here is pride. He is therefore right to say, “And when you have attained chastity, do not become puffed up.” Do you see what that means? Do not become proud. The...
To be puffed up means to be proud. Do not become proud in relation to those who live in marriage. That is not right, my beloved. Each way of life has its own value and its own place. If you like, although the comparison may seem rather basic, I would put it this way: you cannot drink water and condemn bread, nor can you eat bread and condemn water.
Water is nourishment, and bread is nourishment. Both nourish us, but each has its own place, and one cannot replace the other. That is the proper view. And he says very beautifully here, “Marriage is honorable, and the marriage bed undefiled,” as the Apostle Paul writes in Hebrews 13:4. In other words, marriage is honorable, but the marriage bed must also remain undefiled. Nothing must be allowed to stain the marital union—especially adultery, but also other deviations that may occur and that demean the human person himself. You understand me. “You,” says the Apostle—as the Apostle says...
“You who possess chastity, were you not born from marriage? Were you not born of people who married? How, then, can you condemn marriage?” Secondly, who has ever existed without being born through marriage? Can you, then, condemn marriage simply because you have embraced virginity, celibacy, and the monastic life? No. None of this should exist among us. “Because you possess gold, do not reject silver.” I used the example of bread and water. Since you possess gold, can you condemn and reject silver? One is a precious metal, and so is the other. “But let those also be of good hope...”
“...who make lawful use of marriage.” How beautiful! Those who make use of marriage lawfully should also be of good hope—those whose marriage is according to the divine law and who do not turn it into licentiousness by abusing the freedom granted to them.
Does this allow everything? Let me read you the whole sentence. It is this brief phrase: “Not turning it into licentiousness through excessive freedom, but recognizing times of abstinence so that they may devote themselves to prayer.” That is beautiful. Pay attention, then: marriage, yes, but marriage according to the divine law—a lawful marriage, a marriage that is beyond reproach. Let married Christians remember this exhortation of the Apostle Paul, given in the Holy Spirit: “Marriage is honorable among all, and the marriage bed undefiled.” The complete verse continues: “But God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers.” God will condemn the sexually immoral and adulterers. He will condemn not marriage, therefore, but adultery.
Within marriage there is a certain authority. What is this authority? In 1 Corinthians 7, the Apostle Paul says something marvelous. Here we see the conclusions that flow from those great truths recorded in the Book of Genesis, when God created man and woman. He says, “You cannot abstain against the husband’s will.” Nor can the husband abstain when his wife does not consent, because the husband does not have authority over his own body; the wife does.
Likewise, the wife does not have authority over her own body; the husband does. Therefore, whatever they do must be by mutual agreement. Do they wish to come together? There must be agreement. Do they wish to abstain? There must be agreement. This agreement draws these two individuals into one person—or, better, into one beautiful and complete person—because these two human beings are one human being: “and the two shall become one flesh.” There is nothing more beautiful than the person formed in marriage. It is one. Here within marriage...
Beyond bodily union—and I emphasize that bodily union is the occasion and starting point—marriage is not exhausted by sexual union. Marriage has a spiritual dimension. If married people do not take care, in good time, to discover this spiritual dimension, their marriage will quickly grow old. And not only will it grow old; it will decline, lose its beauty and vitality, and the two will begin to seek unlawful interests outside the marriage—that is, in adultery. They will no longer find anything of interest within their marriage.
They will seek their interests outside marriage. This, my beloved, is precisely why adultery is so widespread today: marriage is not founded properly. Marriage is viewed from only one angle, the carnal one. There is no greater crime against marriage than to regard it only carnally. Marriage is not a game, either. It is a serious matter. “And the two shall become one flesh,” forming one person—one person. This is great, very great. And true interest will begin when they begin to seek and discover the spiritual dimension of marriage. Thank you.
We do not have merely the union of two bodies. We have the union of two human beings who also bear two souls, with spiritual interests and spiritual convictions. When this mutual exploration of their spirits begins, there lies all the interest and all the grandeur. And marriage—listen to this great honor bestowed upon it—is an image of Christ and the Church and, in a certain analogous sense, an imitation of the Holy Trinity, in whom there is one essence and a plurality of persons—three Persons. Here too we have one essence. Why do we have one essence? Because “the two shall become one flesh.”
Even if that bodily union did not take place, all human bodies share one essence; we are all consubstantial with one another. Here, then, we have what we might call a reflection, an imitation of the life of the Holy Trinity. This is something good. What unites the three Persons of the Holy Trinity? Their common essence and love. “I love the Father,” Christ says, “and the Father loves Me.” Do you see? In the same way, the husband should be able to say, “I love my wife, and my wife loves me.” If, for one reason or another, sexual relations can no longer continue, must the person then die inwardly? On the contrary, it is then all the more important...
For him to remain alive, and for their love to increase continually until the grave. It is a beautiful thing; I believe you understand. Thus, within marriage there is a mutual, reciprocal authority, as I explained earlier. But there is something else as well. The Apostle Paul says that if a woman cannot remain continent, she should marry; if she is a widow, she should marry. This means that marriage was also given to prevent falls. What kind of falls? Falls into sexual sin. If you open a book of dogmatic theology, you will find that this is the second purpose of marriage: to prevent falls into sin. The first is the theosis, the divinisation, of the spouses. The second is what I have just told you.
The third purpose is the begetting of children. The begetting of children is third. The Latins place procreation first. The Orthodox, quite rightly, place it third. The reason is simple: if two people do not have children, does that mean their marriage has no meaning? Of course their marriage has meaning. Unquestionably, it has meaning. So there is this second purpose: that we may not fall into sexual sin. Does the Apostle Paul not say so? Listen to his words. This is the opening verse of 1 Corinthians 7: “Because of sexual immorality, let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband.” What does he say? “Because of sexual immorality,” John Chrysostom points out. Do you see?
He does not say, “for the sake of procreation,” but “because of sexual immorality,” which means desire in itself—nothing more. As for why such desire may exist, let us not forget that we are fallen human beings. In this case, it is given a lawful place within marriage. And elsewhere he says, “Come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.” So that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. What does this refer to? The burning of sexual desire—or, God forbid, looking for something outside your marriage. All these things, then, must remain within marriage. That is the authority being spoken of. Saint Cyril says here, then—pay attention—that all this is very good.
But do not, he says, fall into licentiousness through excessive freedom. You cannot simply say, “I am married; I have my wife,” or, “I have my husband.” Yes, but you still cannot cross certain boundaries. Once those boundaries are crossed, it becomes sensual indulgence, a pursuit of pleasure. And, if you will, this pursuit of pleasure is found above all in licentiousness. Thus, our age in particular—though this has existed in every age, it is especially marked in ours—seeks pleasure through all kinds of deviations of the sexual instinct: deviations that one could scarcely imagine and that are promoted in every possible way.
These deviations are stimulated through photographs and films depicting all kinds of acts and situations, so that people may be led into sin. No—God forbid, no. And while we are on the subject, let me tell you this as well. I beg you, my brothers and sisters, I earnestly beg you: never look at those extremely filthy photographs that circulate, and never bring into your home and your marriage the things you see or hear from corrupt people—whether they happen to be your colleagues, your friends, or anyone else around you. If your wife is a decent person, she will be shocked; you will fall in her estimation, and if you later come to your senses, you will feel ashamed before your own wife.
So let us never do this. Let us not imitate what the world does. Christians separate themselves from the world. This was in yesterday’s epistle reading: “Come out and be separate, and touch nothing unclean”—2 Corinthians 6:17, leading into the first verse of chapter 7. Do not touch anything unclean, he says. Not only must you refrain from doing anything unclean; you must not even touch anything unclean. This is lawful marriage. My beloved, this is Christian marriage. And the Apostle adds here: “Recognizing times of abstinence, so that they may devote themselves to prayer.”
They recognize times of abstinence so that they may devote themselves to prayer. This is that wonderful verse in which the Apostle says, “So that you may devote yourselves to prayer and fasting”—but by mutual consent: “by agreement”—“and then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you,” and so on. Do you see? There must be mutual agreement to abstain, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer and fasting, as the Apostle Paul says. From this we see that fasting includes continence. So these things were not invented by priests—the Lenten fasts and the rest. No, my brothers and sisters, we did not fabricate them.
They are laid down and recorded in the Word of God. Some people accuse the Fathers of our Church, saying that because they were monks, they were warped men with homosexual tendencies. Even such things have been said. No, my brothers and sisters. These teachings are laid down in Holy Scripture. The Fathers said nothing beyond Holy Scripture. Do you see, then? Fasting, prayer, and continence. Otherwise, one begins the downward slide of sensualism, and who knows where it will end. René Biot, a French physician, says that sensualism is the worm that eats away at marriage—the worm that consumes and destroys it. Let us therefore pay close attention to this.
“When you assemble in the Church, present your bodies as clean as your garments. And enter marriage for the begetting of children, not for the pursuit of pleasure.” Just as your clothes are clean when you go to church, so your bodies should also be clean. Quite right! We take care to clean our clothes, yet we do not keep our bodies clean from sin. And notice what he says here: “For the begetting of children, not for the pursuit of pleasure.” Certainly, as we said earlier, marital relations may serve to quiet the passions. But we must not enter marriage solely for the pursuit of pleasure. As I explained to you before, this is...
a worm that eats away at marriage. “And let those who have married only once not reject those who have entered a second marriage.” You see, this was an age when marrying only once was held in honor, while a second marriage was regarded as an exception. Saint Cyril, if only you could see people marrying a third time and then proceeding to a fourth and fifth! And if only you could see, Saint Cyril, Christians in the West going through twenty or thirty divorces! My dear friends, what a sorry state. That was the spirit of his age. And he says that those who have married only once should neither condemn nor reject those who have entered a second marriage. Does not the Apostle Paul say that...
if a widowed man or woman cannot remain unmarried, then they should marry again? It is better, he says, to marry than to spend one’s days burning with desire, since that condition may cast a person into sin. “For self-restraint is good and admirable.” You see, I anticipate Saint Cyril, but Saint Cyril confirms what I have said. Self-restraint is a wonderful thing! “Yet entering a second marriage is also pardonable, lest the weak fall into fornication.” That is precisely what I have been telling you all this time. Self-restraint is good, he says, but not everyone is capable of it. A second marriage is therefore pardoned and permitted for one who lacks the strength, lest that person fall into fornication.
“It is good for them to remain as I am,” says the Apostle. “But if they cannot exercise self-restraint, let them marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with desire.” I already explained these things to you; I have simply read the passage to you now. “But let everything else be banished far away.” Everything outside honorable marriage and honorable virginity—let it all “be banished far away.” “Fornication, adultery, and every form of licentiousness.” Fornication, adultery, and whatever other sins of the flesh may exist—he says that all these must be banished. Far away, far away! “Let the body be kept pure for the Lord, so that the Lord may look with favor upon your body.” What a beautiful phrase. Let the body, then, be kept pure for the Lord, so that the Lord may look favorably upon it. In this same passage, in 1 Corinthians chapter 6, the Apostle Paul says...
that...
“Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which belong to God.” Glorify God, he says, with your body and with your spirit, for both belong to God. Indeed—indeed, we must glorify God. How is God glorified? In yesterday’s homily I told you how God will be glorified and worshiped in His Kingdom through the presence of the Saints. But how is He glorified here? When you are a chaste person, you glorify God. You may say nothing at all with your mouth. Simply by being chaste, you glorify God. Do you see what the Apostle says? “Therefore glorify God in your body.” “In your body” means through bodily purity, “and in your spirit”—both of which belong to God.
Very beautiful. And consider, my dear friends, that a little earlier the Apostle Paul tells us that we are temples of the Holy Spirit. “Do you not know,” he says, “that you are temples of the Holy Spirit, and that the Spirit of God dwells in your bodies?”
Likewise, he says, “Do you not know that you are members of the body of Christ?” How do we become members of the body of Christ? By partaking of the Body and Blood of Christ, we become members of the body of Christ. How, then, can I keep my body defiled, engage in fornication, as Saint Cyril says, and at the same time be a temple of the Holy Spirit and a member of the body of Christ?
Is that possible? “Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute?” the Apostle asks. “Certainly not!” Shall I make the members of Christ members of an immoral woman? Certainly not. Under no circumstances must this happen. It is a dreadful sin. Therefore, my dear friends, let us sanctify our bodies. Let us sanctify them in every way, through chastity and purity. Then we will truly preserve these bodies as fit and holy tabernacles and dwelling places of the Holy Spirit, prepared also for the eternal Kingdom. For do not forget that the Apostle Paul also says, “God raised up the Lord and will also raise us up by His power.” He raised the Lord, Christ, and He will raise us as well. And since we shall be raised...
our renewed bodies will be fit to live in the Kingdom of God only if they have lived in sanctification and chastity. May God bless you!

πρέπει να αφήνει. Δηλαδή, τι μπορεί να αφήνει; Είναι θέμα καταλληλότητος και μη καταλληλότητος. Είναι θέμα ότι μπορεί κανείς να ξαναγυρίσει σε κάποιο αμάρτημα τέτοιο, όταν το έκανε κάποτε. Πολλά έχουν τη θέση τους, αλλά στο βάθος αυτών των κανόνων της Εκκλησίας μας είναι ότι δεν ανακαλείται το αμάρτημα αυτό. Ως αμάρτημα ανακαλείται και συγχωρείται, αλλά δεν ανακαλείται για την Ιεροσύνη ποτέ και είναι αμετάκλητο και μένει αδιόρθωτο και μένει κώλυμα τελικά, εμπόδιο. Γιατί, μπορείτε να απορείτε. Είναι πολύ δύσκολο. Θα λέγαμε: μήπως έχει μια οντολογική διάσταση το πράγμα;
Μπορούν να αλλάξουν, είναι σχήματα, το ξαναλέω άλλη μια φορά. Λοιπόν, το σχήμα της ενορίας περνάει μια κρίση. Νομίζω ότι το σημαντικότερο σημείο κρίσεως της σημερινής ενορίας είναι, αγαπητοί μου, η εκκοσμίκευση. Έχει μπει δηλαδή αρκετό κοσμικό στοιχείο και κοσμική νοοτροπία μέσα στο σχήμα αυτό. Ακόμη ένα προϊόν αυτής της εκκοσμικεύσεως του σχήματος είναι τούτο: τα πνευματικά κέντρα που κάνουμε είναι περισσότερο, άκουσον άκουσον, πολιτιστικά και λιγότερο πνευματικά. Δηλαδή, ξέρετε τι θα πει;
ένας θεολόγος, λαϊκός, αδιόριστος ήταν τότε. Προσελήφθη εκεί για να επιτηρεί τα παιδιά και να είναι, τρόπον τινά, ας πούμε, ο επιμελητής του φροντιστηρίου ή του πνευματικού κέντρου. Κάποια φορά τα είχε μαζεμένα όλα τα παιδιά και τους είπε ότι: «Παιδιά, κοιτάξτε, τώρα μπαίνουμε στη Μεγάλη Σαρακοστή, πρέπει να νηστέψουμε». Έτυχε να παρευρίσκεται και ο Προϊστάμενος του ναού και, διακόπτων τον θεολόγον —αντιπαιδαγωγικό το πράγμα είναι αυτό— διακόπτων τον θεολόγον και μπροστά στα παιδιά λέει: «Ε, κύριε τάδε, δεν μπορούμε να λέμε στα παιδιά τώρα περί νηστείας». Πάτερ μου, τι θα έπρεπε να τους πούμε; Αν σας αρέσει η μουσική του Βάγκνερ ή του Μπετόβεν;
Σας αρέσει η παραδοσιακή μουσική ή τα ρεμπέτικα; Αν θα πρέπει να πάμε τώρα να κάνουμε εκδρομή στην Πάρνηθα, στον Όλυμπο ή στον Κίσσαβο και να πάρουμε slides και να τα προβάλλουμε στη λέσχη μας; Αυτό θα πούμε; Να το κάνουμε και. Αλλά δεν μπορεί να είναι εις βάρος της αληθινής κατηχήσεως του λαού μας. Έτσι, αγαπητοί, ειλικρινά σας λέγω, έτσι ένα δείγμα σας πήρα, μικρό δειγματάκι. Ειλικρινά σας λέγω ότι το σχήμα «ενορία» περνάει μια πάρα πολύ σοβαρή κρίση. Θα μου πείτε: τι ελπίδα υπάρχει ανανεώσεως;
Ο τρίτος σκοπός είναι η τεκνογονία. Τρίτος σκοπός η τεκνογονία. Οι Λατίνοι βάζουν πρώτη την τεκνογονία. Οι Ορθόδοξοι, και ορθότατα, βάζουν τρίτη την τεκνογονία. Απλούστατα, γιατί αν δύο άνθρωποι δεν κάνουν παιδιά, σημαίνει δεν έχει νόημα ο γάμος τους; Βεβαίως έχει νόημα ο γάμος τους. Αναμφισβήτητα έχει νόημα ο γάμος τους. Οπότε, αφού υπάρχει ο δεύτερος λόγος, για να μην πέσουμε στην πορνεία, δεν το λέγει ο Απόστολος Παύλος; Ακούστε πώς το λέγει. Είναι ο πρώτος στίχος του εβδόμου κεφαλαίου Α' Κορινθίους: «Διά δε τας πορνείας έκαστος την εαυτού γυναίκα εχέτω και εκάστη τον ίδιον άνδρα εχέτω». Τι λέγει; «Διά δε τας πορνείας», λέγει ο Ιερός Χρυσόστομος. Είδες;
Πολύ ωραίο. Και να σκεφτείτε, αγαπητοί, ότι λίγο πιο πάνω ο Απόστολος Παύλος μάς λέγει ότι είμαι ναός του Αγίου Πνεύματος. Δεν γνωρίζετε, λέγει, ότι είσαστε ναός του Αγίου Πνεύματος, που κατοικεί το Πνεύμα του Θεού στα σώματά σας;
Ομοίως λέγει: Δεν γνωρίζετε ότι είσαστε μέλη του σώματος του Χριστού; Πώς γινόμεθα μέλη του σώματος του Χριστού; Μα με το να κοινωνούμε το Σώμα και το Αίμα του Χριστού, γινόμεθα μέλη του σώματος του Χριστού. Πώς μπορώ λοιπόν εγώ να διατηρώ ένα σώμα βρώμικο, να έχω ένα σώμα βρώμικο, να μετέρχομαι την εργασία της πορνείας, όπως λέγει ο Άγιος Κύριλλος, και μπορώ να είμαι ταυτοχρόνως ναός του Αγίου Πνεύματος και μέλος του σώματος του Χριστού;
