Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem teaches that the soul enters the world without personal sin and rejects metempsychosis and inherited guilt for a parent’s sins, while acknowledging that parental wrongdoing can have consequences for children. Horoscopes, divination, and reliance on dreams contradict faith in divine providence and in God’s omniscience, omnipotence, and omnipresence. There are no naturally sinful and naturally righteous classes of souls, because all human souls share one nature and become sinful or righteous through free choice, formation, and response to God’s word.

Dear friends, we continue our discussion of the soul, as we study the Fourth Catechetical Lecture of Saint Cyril, who gives us a concise presentation of the fundamental teachings of the faith. Having spoken to us about God, he now speaks to us about man; and the first point concerning man is the human soul. A little later, he will speak to us about the human body. And so he continues: “For you do not sin by birth, nor do you commit fornication by chance, nor, as some foolishly claim, do the configurations of the stars compel you and drive you into wantonness.”
He says that you do not “sin by birth.” What does this mean? The word genesis, “birth” or “coming into being,” comes from the verb meaning “to come into existence.” Thus, when you are created, you do not sin. In other words, you do not come into the world with a personally sinful soul. Was there really a belief that someone could sin at birth? Yes, such a belief existed. It was also found among the Jews—not, of course, in the Old Testament, but in popular traditions, teachings outside the true religious assembly, human traditions rather than the Tradition of God. This belief also existed among the pagans, especially, without question, among those who upheld metempsychosis, the transmigration of souls.
For what meaning could metempsychosis have, except that a soul comes into the world to atone for the sins of its former life? This was an influence from the pagan world upon God’s people, the Israelites, leading them to believe such things. This explains the disciples’ question when the Lord encountered the blind man, the man blind from birth: “Lord, who sinned, this man or his parents?” And the Lord answered, “Neither this man nor his parents.” Do you see? Neither he nor his parents. Do you know how much richness is contained in that simple answer? It tells us that his soul did not come into the world sinful.
They wondered whether he himself had sinned. The Pharisees, following human teachings and commandments, consistently believed that an unborn child could sin during pregnancy. Yes, this is roughly what Freud also believed when he claimed that a child—especially a boy—while nursing at his mother’s breast, is behaving erotically toward her. Have you ever heard such excesses? Such excesses! They also believed that a child born of sinful parents, when receiving his soul, receives along with it a portion of the sins of his father and mother. Now, a person may indeed suffer consequences from the sins of his parents. But that he can inherit their
sins is not correct. What do we mean by a consequence? If my father was a drunkard, I may have an inclination toward wine or even toward criminal behavior. That is a consequence of my father’s sin. But this does not mean that I bear responsibility for my father’s sins, as though I carried his sin in my own soul and had to pay for a sin that had become part of my soul. No. Saint Cyril therefore states clearly: “For you do not sin by birth.” You do not sin through your genesis, through your coming into being, “nor do you commit fornication by chance,” as some people foolishly babble.
The word means to rave—to speak madly and utter foolish things. Some people speak such foolishness when they say that the positions of the stars in the heavens compel them to fall into wanton acts. Let me read the phrase.
“As some foolishly claim, the configurations of the stars...”
What are these “configurations of the stars”? They are the signs of the zodiac—the way they are said to align, the times at which they appear, and the seasons associated with one sign or another: Capricorn, Virgo, Leo, Cancer, and so forth. They ask in which month I was born and under the influence of which sign I live, claiming that these things “compel you and drive you into wantonness,” and so on. Now, pay attention.
Here we truly encounter the idea of chance. Saint Cyril says, “Nor do you commit fornication by chance.” What does it mean to commit fornication “by chance”? It means that you are not master of your own existence, but are governed by fate or chance. We still hear this said today—that
Well...
Let me put it the way it is said in court. The judge asks the accused, “Why did you do this?” And he replies, “Your Honor, it was an evil hour.” What is this “evil hour”? Do you know what it means? It means a moment in time that supposedly exerts an influence upon me against my will. Do you hear what people mean by an evil hour? As they imagine it, the evil hour is
a power acting upon me from outside my will. This is precisely what Saint Cyril means here. If you commit some evil act—whether fornication or anything else—you did not do it because you came under the evil influence of the goddess Fortune, the goddess Fate, or the stars. You did it because you wanted to. Therefore, you bear the full responsibility. My dear friends, there is no fate, no chance, and no influence of the stars. It is tragic for us Christians to turn to the so-called horoscopes published in newspapers and magazines, trying to discover what will happen to us today or which constellation supposedly governs us. It is dreadful! And do not tell me that newspapers publish these things merely to make money. If no one paid attention to such material, would the newspapers publish it? My dear friends, newspapers and journalists always stake their efforts on what people like and on their weaknesses. For the sake of money and profit, they then reinforce those very weaknesses. A vicious circle is created: newspapers exploit human weaknesses and, through the authority people grant them, strengthen those weaknesses further. And so the vicious circle continues. It is truly dreadful. A Christian who consults horoscopes is not a Christian. It is impossible.
Does such a person believe in the providence of God? He does not even believe in the love of God. What does chance mean? It means that somewhere there is a corner or compartment of the universe—I do not know where—in which God does not rule, but some other power does. I ask you: is that not blasphemy? It would mean that God is not omnipresent. Is that not blasphemy? It would mean that God does not govern all things and does not know all things. Is that not blasphemy? Does this not contradict God’s omniscience, omnipotence, and omnipresence? You see, then, what we are really saying. Saint Cyril describes it correctly when he says, “as some foolishly rave”—as some people utter mad things.
Delirious and mythical things.
“Seeking to avoid confessing your own evils, you assign their cause to the innocent stars. Do not, then, pay attention to astrologers. For Holy Scripture says concerning them: ‘Let the astrologers of heaven stand forth and save you,’” and so forth. Isaiah says this in chapter 47, verse 13. “Behold, they shall all be burned like kindling in the fire, and they shall not deliver their own soul from the flame.” Again, this is Isaiah 47:14.
You seek to avoid confessing your own evil deeds, and you assign them to the innocent stars, attributing the cause to them. What extraordinary claims! Have you ever thought about this? How could I possibly blame the stars for the wrong things that I myself do? An ancient saying puts it this way: “Men fashioned the idol of fortune as an excuse for their own lack of judgment.” I remember it because it was once assigned as the subject of a school essay when I was in secondary school. “Men fashioned the idol of fortune as an excuse for their own lack of judgment.” In other words, they fashioned the idol of fortune, the stars, and so forth, because of—thank you—
their own lack of judgment. That is, they unloaded the blame for their wrongdoing onto fortune or the stars. No! This is why he says: do not pay attention to astrologers, for the Scriptures say, “Let the astrologers of heaven now stand forth and save you.” But how can they save you? They themselves are condemned. How, then, can astrologers save you, whatever they may claim? Here I would like to make a brief digression. I have made this point many times, and I will make it again in the future. You may tell me that, nevertheless, some of the things to which people pay attention do come true.
Let us say that some percentage can be explained as coincidence. But what about those cases in which the results appear almost certain—a whole sequence of events matching what was foretold through the stars, a zodiac sign, a horoscope, coffee grounds, cards, palmistry, divination by clouds, and countless other methods? People have even tried to divine things from the keel-shaped breastbone of a chicken, from entrails, or from a lamb’s shoulder blade. There is no end to such things. How do these predictions come true? How are they confirmed? Listen, dear friends. It would be very strange to claim that a lamb could know who will die in our household, or what calamity will or will not occur. Could a chicken possibly have the fate of our household written
beneath its breastbone and upon its bones? Is that possible? How could it happen? Who, then, could place some sign there? The devil. But the devil does not know the future. The devil does not know what will happen even one minute from now. He may know certain things about what is coming, just as we ourselves can know some things that lie ahead. Yet we say, “God willing,” because we do not know what will happen afterward. If I tell you at this moment that someone is coming because I saw him approaching outside, what if he never enters because he suffers a heart attack just as he is about to come in?
How, then, can the devil see something approaching and guarantee that it will happen exactly that way? The devil does not even know what will happen in the next minute. What, then, is the explanation? Listen: God permits a prediction to come true in order to punish those who resort to such means to decipher the future. God permits it as a punishment of delusion, because they have made themselves worthy of being deceived. This interpretation is not my own; it comes from the Old Testament itself. Let us therefore take care not to fall into this. And I will repeat something I have said many times: the matter of dreams. If someone dreams that he will die at a particular time, he must not believe it—he must not believe it. Indeed, if he goes and confesses the dream, its power is broken; it is gone, finished, and nothing will happen. Did you confess it? Then it is over. But if you did not confess it, God may indeed permit you to become ill and die,
to punish you because you believed what you saw. Therefore, today, pay no attention to dreams. When you wake up in the morning, do not try to recall what you saw in your sleep. If, for a few days, we make a habit of not remembering what we dreamed, you may be sure that, as soon as we open our eyes, the whole world of dreams will have vanished.
Dreams are fleeting and will remain so, for dreams have wings: they fly away.
Paragraph nine: “Learn this also: before the soul came into this world, it had committed no sin.” Before the soul entered this world, it had sinned in nothing. This is what we said above. “But having come into the world without sin, we now sin by our own free choice.” This, my dear friends, is the foundation of our guilt and of our whole conduct. We sin by our own free choice. We choose to sin. We are neither acted upon by outside influences, nor has the soul come from somewhere else already sinful—none of that is true. “Do not misunderstand the saying, ‘What I do not will, that I do.’”
“What I do not will, that I do.” Do not appeal to that passage as you have heard it wrongly interpreted. It is from the Apostle Paul, in Romans 7:16: “What I do not will, that I do.” Rather, remember Him who says—and it is God speaking, in the first chapter of Isaiah—“If you are willing and listen to Me, you shall eat the good things of the land; but if you are unwilling and do not listen to Me, the sword shall devour you.”
This means: I choose to listen. It depends upon you, the human person, whether you listen to God or refuse to listen to Him. There is no chance, no fate; no one is directing you. You are free, and by your own free choice you say yes or no to God. That is all. Hence the Kingdom of God, and hence also the punishments of Hell. Bringing the matter down to earthly life, hence also the courts and prisons. Otherwise, someone could say to the judge, “Why are you punishing me, Your Honor, when dark fate cut...” Someone died recently, and they said, “Dark fate cut the thread of your life.” What dark fate? These are things we say! Only Freemasonry teaches such things, which is why they are heard in Masonic eulogies.
Fate! But fate does not exist. Are we to tell the judge, “Fate made me do it,” or “This is my fate,” or “It was written for me”? Off you go to prison, then, and there you can learn whether it was your fate or not.
“Just as you presented your members as slaves to uncleanness and to lawlessness leading to further lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification.” It lies in my own hands whether I remain in sin and surrender my members to sin, or withdraw them from sin and make them instruments of sanctification and righteousness. “And remember Holy Scripture, which says, ‘As they did not see fit to retain God in full knowledge,’ and, ‘What may be known of God is manifest within them,’ and, ‘They closed their eyes.’” Remember also God reproaching them and saying, “Did I not plant you as a fruitful vine?” “I made you,” He says, “a fruitful vine—you, Israel—wholly a true vine. How then have you turned bitter, becoming a vine...”
“...that is foreign to Me?” How were you transformed, how were you altered, how did you change—you, the beautiful vine that I created—so as to become something else, foreign, alien, bitter, and harsh? I made you what you were; how did you become this? What caused it? Your own free choice. All the arguments I have just read to you are from Holy Scripture; I shall not analyze them further. We have mentioned one or two. Paragraph twenty: “The soul is immortal.” And Paul expressed it to us in this way, if you remember—and this is extremely important, so I shall say it once more—the soul is immortal because God makes it immortal. The soul is not immortal by its own essence; it is immortal because God wills it to be so.
Only God is immortal by essence, “who alone possesses immortality.” There is also something very important here, something that would provide a fine answer in our age, when there is so much talk of feminism: “And all the souls of men and women are alike; only the members of the body differ.” There are no female souls and male souls. The only distinction and difference lies in human bodies. We may say, “This body belongs to a man,” or, “This body belongs to a woman.” But their souls are alike; they share the same nature. This is extremely important, my dear friends.
Extremely important. You see, if people, both men and women, understood that their souls share the same nature, they would not rush to speak of feminism. What they are seeking is equality even in bodily constitution. You may say, “No, no, that is not the issue. It concerns other things—rights, this matter, that matter.” But do you know that the rights and all the other things feminism may claim either arise, or ought to arise, from the difference between bodies and not between souls? Do you know this? If we disregard that starting point, how can we establish equality in rights, obligations, and so forth? It is impossible.
It is impossible. The starting point is the difference between the bodies. I have said it before: a man is a man. What else can we say? And a woman is a woman. How can we change these things? They cannot be changed. A man has one set of physical capacities, while a woman has another. They are entirely different. Indeed, biology itself tells us, we might say, that not even a single square centimeter of a man’s skin is identical to a woman’s—not even one. This means that, although both man and woman are human, these differences are nevertheless profound.
They are differences that reveal precisely what we call sex. This is very important. Thus, their physical capacities differ. Since their bodily capacities are different, how can I speak of equal rights and so forth? Where do rights find their counterpart? In obligations. For whenever we speak of rights, we always imply obligations as well.
So we might say that a woman has certain rights. Can she also bear exactly the same obligations? Can we, for example, assign a woman to do everything a man does in a factory, or everything a soldier does in war? How can we do that? If we put a woman in such a position, either she will be unable to perform the task or she will suffer harm. And what will that harm be? It will affect her soul: she will become masculinized. You...
Thank you. A woman can indeed become masculinized and acquire, we might say, a certain psychology. But psychology is one thing and the soul another. Psychology is one thing and the soul another. We can speak of male psychology and female psychology, but not of a male soul or a female soul.
The soul is one and the same in nature. I shall say it once more. What is psychology? Psychology is the science that examines the soul’s behavior. But the soul expresses its behavior through the body, through one’s sex. If, for example, my vocal apparatus were formed so that I spoke like a woman, I would speak like a woman. If the structure of my throat and vocal cords is such that I speak like a man, I will speak like a man. Where, then, does the voice come from? It comes from, and is shaped by, the organ here in my throat. So it is also with the soul...
It expresses itself through the body. The soul’s expression through the body takes the form of behavior. Since bodies differ, that behavior will obviously vary. Psychology, then, is nothing other than the behavior of the soul as expressed through the body. I shall say it once more: the soul is one thing and psychology another. They are different things. Thus, a woman has a different psychology—not a different soul, but a different psychology. When her psychology is no longer feminine but masculine, how would you regard that? I believe that when a woman comes to acquire a masculine psychology, the harm may even be irreparable. Do you hear? It may even be irreparable. Would you want a wife who had a masculine psychology?
Should I explain in greater detail what that means? What more can I say? I shall not analyze it further; I leave it to each person’s judgment. It would be a terrible thing, just as it would be terrible for a man to have a feminine psychology—a feminine psychology. What would that mean? I leave that also to your judgment; you can see it and understand it for yourselves. Yet that, my dear friends, is what we are now trying to bring about. It is terrible. Is it not enough that man and woman have the same kind of soul and equal rights before God? The man will inherit the Kingdom of God, and the woman will inherit the Kingdom of God as well. Christ died for the man, and Christ died for the woman. Christ was raised from the dead for the man, and Christ was raised from the dead for the woman. Are these things not enough to...
...raise both man and woman to a very great height? Why do we seek other things? These other things we seek come from the evil one.
That is why the consequences are harmful, and we shall indeed see harmful consequences as these contrivances of feminism and the like unfold. Therefore, my dear friends, it is extremely important to know that human souls are equal, whether they belong to men or to women. Allow me to make another distinction. Saint Cyril does not mention it, of course, but our age requires us to make it, and I shall emphasize this subject as much as I can, just as other speakers do. Today the question is not only whether there is such a thing as a male human soul or a female human soul. There is another question as well: whether an adult has a soul but a little human being does not. How little? As you know, human life is not a matter of age.
A person’s age certainly does not begin at birth. Birth is simply a point of reference. A person’s actual life begins at conception. During those nine months, while the human being is carried in the mother’s womb, can that person not develop, become ill, or die? You see, then, that the embryo has a complete history within the mother’s womb. It may acquire impairments that will remain throughout the rest of its life after birth. Thus, our birth is a chronological point of reference, but it is not our true beginning. Our beginning is our conception in our mother’s womb. Yet today we have come to say that, until the age of three months, a human being has no soul, and therefore abortion is not murder.
What would you say to that? This is something new, then—a new idea that a human being has no soul at three months. Perhaps, they say, the child has a soul from three months until nine months, but...
Be sure of this: such things are fluid, because they are human notions. After some time, they may very well say that a human being has no soul throughout all nine months in the mother’s womb. There was once a theory—these things began in the time of Haeckel and others like him, who tried to prove that man descended from the ape, and from animals in general—that the human embryo...
...passes through every stage of animal life.
That was the idea. Needless to say, it is outdated—completely outdated. Do you hear? Every stage of animal life, meaning the life of animals. Today we live amid a crude materialism, not so much theoretical as practical. These claims were made in the last century, at the beginning of the century. Today we can reject them scientifically, because they do not stand up. Unfortunately, however, we are living out in practice the consequences of those theories that prevailed in the past, and so we say that abortion is permissible. Deep down, the metaphysical explanation is this: that a human being passes through the stages of an animal.
The child has no soul, they say, and therefore it is not a crime. Consequently, neither the physician, nor the woman, nor her husband who take part in the abortion bears responsibility. There is neither responsibility nor guilt before the law. But what can one say? These are dreadful things. Because man is so easily deceived—and deceived by his own self-interest—the Word of God must always come to the aid of what is right and true, bringing us onto the right path and telling us what is right. So I ask you to understand this: all these things emerge from the dark lair of Satan; it is from such lairs that they arise.
We must always have the Word of God as our guide and as the criterion by which we judge all these things. That is why we need to listen to the Word of God. Saint Cyril will tell us this just a little further on; you will hear it: “There is neither one class of souls that sins by nature and another class of souls that acts righteously by nature. Both arise from free choice, since the hypostasis—the essential constitution—of souls is of one kind and alike in everyone.” There is no category of souls that sins and another category of souls that does not sin but acts righteously.
He says: No, no, there is nothing of the kind. In both cases there is free choice, because the soul is of one kind and its essence is common to all. Good. But do we really ever say that one person belongs to the category of souls that sin, while another belongs to the category of souls that do not sin? Does such a thing exist? Yet this notion lies beneath the surface among our people, my dear friends. It lies beneath the surface whenever we say, “I was born this way.” In other words: “My nature is such that I do what is wrong; I sin.” And someone else says, “My nature is such that I do good.” Such ideas are not right. Can an evil nature not be changed? If not, what is the purpose of formation and upbringing? What is their purpose? If everyone could say, “I was born this way; I belong to the category of people who sin,” then...
...he would be denying the value of formation. Then what purpose do schools serve? What purpose does the work of the Church serve? What purpose does the work of parents serve, if every person were born without any possibility of being influenced by formation from any source? Therefore, let no one believe, “My child is wicked because he was born that way,” or, “I am wicked because I was born that way.” People often give the same answer when we point something out to them. We tell someone, “You are rude,” and he replies, “I was born this way. This is my nature; this is my character.” I have told you what “character” means. Character concerns the soul and is a kind of...
...form impressed upon it. The soul begins like a tablet, a blank slate—or, as philosophy calls it, a tabula rasa, an unwritten page. Yes, precisely. The soul is, so to speak, a tablet, and whatever it learns—every pattern of behavior—is engraved upon it. This is what is called char-ac-ter. Why did I divide the word? To show you that the word “character” comes from the verb “to engrave.” These things are engraved within the soul, and once something has been engraved, it does not easily change. We cannot simply take a sponge and wipe away what we have written. Nor can we simply take a chisel, level the tablet, and begin engraving again.
It is not easy. That is why this good formation must begin from the child’s tenderest age—and that tender age includes the embryonic stage, the time in the womb. Do not forget this. Before the child comes into the world, good foundations must be laid within the mother’s womb. Do not forget it. The mother must live in a healthy condition, both psychologically and physically. If she smokes, the child will be harmed. If she drinks, the child will be harmed. And now I come to psychological matters: if the woman is hot-tempered, envious, or anything else of that kind, the child will be harmed. In other words, these things are impressed upon the child in the womb.
Everything can leave its mark, not only psychologically but physically as well. In this sense, people may say that they were born a certain way. Yes—but does that mean nothing can now be changed? Who told you that these things cannot change? Why, then, did Christ come into the world? Christ came into the world to change things. If they cannot change, what benefit does Christ bring? He might then have formed an elite society, a separate group, and said, “Come, you who were born with noble souls; only you can be saved. As for you who were not born with noble souls, go away; you are incapable of receiving anything.” That would be unjust, as Saint Cyril will tell us a little further on. And then what purpose would Hell and Paradise serve?
Saint Cyril makes a brief digression to encourage his catechumens and justify the length of his teaching. He says: “We have now spoken at length, and much time has already passed; but what could be more important than salvation? Are you unwilling to endure some weariness in order to receive provisions against the heretics? Do you not wish to learn the deviations from the path, lest through ignorance you be swept over a precipice? If the teacher considers it no small gain for you to learn these things, should you who are learning not gladly receive the abundance of what is being said?” Thank you.
When we speak, we notice the reactions of our audience, just as a teacher does in the classroom. We see whether the class or our listeners have grown tired or bored, and whether they show interest. Many times the speaker changes his subject, adjusts it, or recalls the attention of his listeners, and so on. Who knows what reactions Saint Cyril saw among his listeners? Perhaps he saw that they were a little tired, or—more likely—that they thought these matters would not be very useful to them. But he says to them: “Tell me, even if you were to grow tired, do you not think these things concern salvation and are exceedingly important? And tell me also...”
“Would you not like to be equipped to confront the heretics?” Here we see that Saint Cyril was concerned not merely to form souls passively, so that people would learn these things and keep them to themselves, but to form people ready for spiritual battle, capable of confronting heretics. In this same sense, I too would like to say this to you: what you hear should enable you not only to stand firm yourselves, but also, my dear friends, to answer those who utter so much nonsense. You know how much nonsense television speaks—and here I take issue especially with television—and how many people are influenced by it.
From it they are fed all manner of theories about man in general, about his soul and body, about God and creation—so many distorted things. When we find ourselves somewhere and hear people discussing and accepting what they have heard and seen, will we remain silent if we know something? Will we not take up the role of a defender of the faith? We therefore need to learn these things well. They are necessary both for us and for others. I would say that this is the noblest and highest expression of love. What is love? Is it giving someone a hundred drachmas so that he can buy food? That is important—very important—but it is at the lowest level. Someone may say to me, “But that is exactly what Christ said.”
“You clothed Me; you fed Me.” Yes, Christ begins with the most basic things, because you cannot claim that you were unable to give a cup of water or a slice of bread. But what are the highest things, the loftiest and noblest? To feed those who hunger because of ignorance; to give drink to those who seek the truth but do not know where to find it; to clothe those who go about in spiritual nakedness, and so forth. These words are not my own. They belong to Saint Symeon the New Theologian. This is how he speaks on the subject of the Judgment: of clothing, giving drink, and feeding people spiritually. Saint Symeon goes even further when he says:
“Lord, when did we see You?” “Yes,” He says, “I was hungry.”
“You were hungry?” “Yes, yes, I was hungry.” “How?” “I hungered for your salvation, and you left Me hungry because you did not take care to be saved,” and so forth. As you see, then, we truly must take care to help those around us as well. “If those who teach you to learn all these things consider the gain to be no small matter, should you who are learning, you who are being instructed, not gladly receive the abundance of what is being said?” Should you not willingly accept the great amount that you hear?
So they had grown tired because of the amount. Do I perhaps tire you sometimes with the amount as well? My dear friends, he says, you benefit from listening. You benefit, so receive these things. I would add something else: the opportunity is truly rare. Truly, the opportunity is rare. I do not wish to sadden you, but I will tell you this. God, of course, always sends nourishment to His people, yet some seasons are less fruitful and others more fruitful. The opportunity is truly rare. Do you think the Word of God will be heard here, in this place, throughout your whole life? And beyond this? For your whole life? I do not think so.
Will you hear these things again? Perhaps you will; perhaps you will not. So hold on to them; they are useful. Sometimes I too pass too quickly over something I am reading and then tell myself, “Read it again and pay attention. You may need it, and perhaps you will never open these books again.” Let us say I have many books. Will I have time to read them all? Impossible! Only if I live for five hundred years will I manage it. So I have them and must benefit from them. You too must be benefited. The opportunity is truly rare. Let us listen to all these things. At times there is a great deal to hear. Never mind; that is all right. Having concluded this exhortation, Saint Cyril returns to his subject in the final paragraph, the twenty-first, and brings it to an end: “The soul possesses free will.” How great is the soul’s freedom of choice? In other words, it is free...
The soul moves as it sees fit, as it wills. Can we really measure the extent of its freedom?
Saint Cyril gives an example here. I will go even further: “The devil has the power to suggest something, but he has no authority to compel anyone against his free choice.” The devil can suggest evil to you, whisper it to you, put it into your mind. But he has no authority to force you against your free choice. He cannot. Let no one say, “The devil forced me.” Never blame the devil by claiming that he compelled you. If we ourselves do not will it—let us know this, my beloved, let us know it well—he cannot force us.
Perhaps what I have told you before sounds excessive, but I will say it again: never lay the responsibility for anything on the devil. You may say to me, “But the devil is at fault for many things.” If we begin to place the blame on the devil, even when he does bear some blame, do you not think we begin to resemble Eve? “The serpent deceived me.” Is it not better to say, “I am to blame. What devil? What business do I have with the devil? Did he entice me to sin? Very well, perhaps he did, but I willed it and I sinned.” Let us not say, “The devil made me do it.” I willed it—I did. If I had not willed it, the devil could have done nothing to me. Therefore, I willed it. And since I willed it, I bear the guilt. How does acknowledging this help me?
First, it gives me honesty before God and before myself. Then it gives me sound self-examination. And with these two things as a foundation, I can come to metanoia, to repentance. For if I say, “The devil made me do it,” I have no foundation for repentance. I remain in my pride: someone else is at fault, and I shift the blame away from myself. So whether the devil is at fault or not, we must say, “I am to blame.” Remember this; it is useful. “He suggests to you a logismos, an intrusive thought, of fornication. If you will, you accept it; if you do not will, you do not accept it.” He comes and suggests an immoral intrusive thought to you. If you will, you accept it. If you do not will it...
you do not accept it. It is in your hands. “For if you committed fornication by necessity, why did God prepare Gehenna for you?” If you fell into fornication against your will—as we so often say—then why has God prepared the punishment of fiery Gehenna? You know what men say—and this is a great, indeed an immense, distortion of the truth. They say that sexual demands are bound up with human nature itself. My brothers, never say this to yourselves. I will say it once more: sexual demands, sexual urges—to put it more plainly, so that I may be understood, because sometimes I am not—
are bound up with my human nature; they exist because this is simply my nature. First of all, are we not blaspheming God when we say such things? And then, why would God punish me if, on the one hand, He made me so that the sin of fornication was woven into my very nature and existence, while on the other hand He punishes me for it? Could that ever be possible? Could God punish me and tell me, “You shall not commit fornication,” while making me in such a way that I could do nothing else? Tell me, please, could that ever be possible? So let us not say, “That is simply my nature.” Or listen to this other excuse: “I am a man, after all.” You see how often I speak about these matters. I speak of them again and again. Do not tell me you are tired of hearing about immorality. “I am a man, after all...”
so I have to act differently. What does that mean? A woman receives no excuse for immorality; indeed, you are very strict with her and demand that she must never have fallen into immorality. Yet you excuse yourself with the words, “I am a man, after all.”
Can this be right? If you think that, because you are a man, you may carry all these sins on your record, then you leave yourself no room for repentance, my brother. I have told you this before. People come to Holy Confession. They may confess that they ate hedgehog meat and committed a very great sin, yet say nothing at all about moral falls or sins of the flesh. And when you ask them, “Is there anything else?” they answer, “Nothing else.” “Have you perhaps ever fallen into immorality, in this way or that?” Then they admit it. “Yes, but...”
“I am a man.” Look at the distortion! To eat hedgehog meat is considered a sin, but to fall into immorality is not. Do you see the distortion? If you sometimes hear us speaking so forcefully, it is because we hear these things so often, and raising our voice is how we release what has built up within us. Thank you.
That is why we say these things. Yet I believe it is very necessary for you to hear them, because this is how we are corrected. “Or, if you acted righteously by nature and not by free choice, why has God prepared inexpressible crowns for you?” But there is another side to this as well. Suppose that you were righteous by nature...
among other people, and you made no effort to acquire the virtues. What value, then, would there be in the crown of praise and in all the inexpressible and glorious things God has prepared for you in His Kingdom? They would have no value at all. Praise and crowns, my beloved, are given to those who struggle, not to those in whom everything is already present by nature, in a mechanical way. Saint Cyril gives a little example: “The sheep is gentle, yet it has never been crowned for its gentleness.” You see how gentle a sheep is—very gentle, as gentle as a sheep. Yet we have never crowned a sheep merely because it possesses gentleness, “because its gentleness comes not from free choice but belongs to it by nature.”
The animal possesses gentleness not through its own free choice, but by nature. So if we suppose that some people possess virtue by nature, what merit is there in that? There truly are people who, by nature, do not become angry. Let them not boast that they will receive great praise for this. What deserves praise is to be prone to anger and to have cut off that anger. What deserves praise is to be given to sensual pleasure and to have restrained that love of pleasure. What deserves praise is to be quarrelsome and to have cut off that contentiousness, so that you live in good fellowship with others and never quarrel. This has value. This receives the crown. For this, the Kingdom of God is being prepared for you.
Therefore, my beloved, what matters is not what we are now, but what we shall become. I think these things are very clear. Let us struggle; it is worth it. With these words Saint Cyril concludes his discussion of the subject in the section entitled “The Soul.” What is the soul? But allow me to add one thing before we close: the value of the soul is tremendously great.
Tremendously great. The Lord said, “What can a man give in exchange for his soul?” My beloved, the entire universe cannot equal the soul in worth or quality. The soul! We therefore have an immortal soul—not immortal by nature, as we have said, but immortal because God wills our soul to be so. A soul for which...
Christ was crucified upon the Cross. God became man and came to save me. We are of immense worth. At some point, then, we must understand this value of our soul. We must realize that it is a treasure, that this treasure is beyond price, and that priceless treasures are watched over, guarded, and, if you will, increased. But treasures also attract thieves and envious eyes. That is why we must keep watch over our treasures. Whose are the envious eyes? Those of the demons and of wicked people. They see us progressing in the spiritual life and try to trip us, placing obstacles before us so that we fall.
Who are the thieves? Again, they are the demons, who try to steal our chastity, our purity, our zeal in the spiritual struggle, and our faith. They seek to steal all these things from us and strip the soul bare, so that it becomes fit only to be cast into eternal Hell. Therefore, “Stand upright upon the walls of the heart,” as a line of poetry says. Stand upright upon the walls, because, as Jeremiah says, “Death entered through the windows.” What are the windows? The senses. And where did death enter? Into the soul. “Guard your heart with all vigilance,” and Holy Scripture says, “Take heed to yourself and guard your soul diligently.” Take heed to yourself, and guard your soul with the greatest care.

Εκφράζεται διαμέσου του σώματος. Η έκφραση της ψυχής διαμέσου του σώματος έχει μια συμπεριφορά. Προφανώς η συμπεριφορά, αφού τα σώματα διαφέρουν, θα είναι ποικίλη. Η ψυχολογία λοιπόν δεν είναι τίποτε άλλο παρά η συμπεριφορά της ψυχής διαμέσου του σώματος. Θα το πω άλλη μια φορά. Άλλο ψυχή και άλλο ψυχολογία. Διαφορετικά πράγματα. Έτσι η γυναίκα έχει μια ψυχολογία άλλη, όχι ψυχή, ψυχολογία άλλη. Όταν η ψυχολογία της δεν είναι πια γυναικεία ψυχολογία αλλά είναι ανδρική, πώς θα το βλέπατε εσείς αυτό; Εγώ νομίζω ότι όταν μια γυναίκα φτάσει να αποκτήσει ανδρική ψυχολογία, είναι μια ίσως και ανεπανόρθωτη ζημία. Ακούτε; Ίσως και ανεπανόρθωτη ζημία. Θα θέλατε άραγε να είχατε μια σύζυγο η οποία να έχει ανδρική ψυχολογία;
Οτιδήποτε, όχι και ψυχικό μόνο, αλλά και σωματικό. Οπότε θα λέγαμε ότι έτσι μπορεί να πούνε οι άνθρωποι ότι γεννήθηκαν. Ναι, αλλά τώρα τίποτα δεν μπορεί να αλλάξει; Και ποιος σας είπε ότι δεν αλλάζουν αυτά; Τότε γιατί ήρθε ο Χριστός στον κόσμο; Ο Χριστός ήρθε στον κόσμο να αλλάξει τα πράγματα. Αν δεν αλλάξουν, μα τι ωφελεί ο Χριστός; Τότε θα μπορούσε να δημιουργεί μια ελίτ κοινωνία, μια ξεχωριστή κοινωνία και να πει: «Ελάτε εσείς που γεννηθήκατε με ευγενή ψυχή, μόνο εσάς μπορώ να σώσω. Εσείς που δεν γεννηθήκατε με ευγενή ψυχή, εσείς φύγετε από εδώ, είσαστε ανεπίδεκτοι». Τότε έχουμε και αδικία, όπως θα μας το πει λίγο πιο κάτω. Τότε ως προς τι η κόλασις και ως προς τι ο παράδεισος;
«Ήσουν πεινασμένος εσύ;» «Ναι, ναι, εγώ ήμουν πεινασμένος». «Πώς;» «Πεινούσα τη σωτηρία σου και με άφησες να πεινώ, γιατί δεν επρόσεξες να σωθείς» κλπ., κλπ. Λοιπόν, όπως βλέπετε, εδώ πέρα πρέπει πράγματι να προσέξουμε ώστε να βοηθήσουμε και το περιβάλλον μας. «Ει τω διδάσκοντι ηγούντι κέρδος ου μικρόν το σε ταύτα μαθείν». Εάν, λέει, εκείνοι οι οποίοι διδάσκουν εσένα να μάθεις όλα αυτά θεωρούν ότι δεν είναι το κέρδος μικρόν, «συ ο μανθάνων», συ που μαθαίνεις, συ που μαθητεύεις, «άρα ουκ οφείλεις ηδέως δέχεσθαι των λεγομένων το πλήθος;» Εσύ δεν οφείλεις ευχαρίστως να δέχεσαι την ποσότητα των όσων ακούς;
κινείται κατά το δοκούν, όπως θέλει η ψυχή. Μπορούμε άραγε να προσμετρήσουμε αυτή την αυτεξουσιότητά της;
Να είναι υπερβολικό αυτό που κι άλλοτε σας είπα; Θα το πω όμως πάλι. Ποτέ μην δώσετε την ευθύνη στον διάβολο για οτιδήποτε. Μα θα μου πείτε, ο διάβολος φταίει σε πολλά. Εάν αρχίσουμε να αποδίδουμε εις τον διάβολον ευθύνη, έστω και να την έχει ο διάβολος, δεν νομίζετε ότι αρχίζουμε να μοιάζουμε της Εύας; «Ο όφις με εξηπάτησε». Και ότι δεν είναι προτιμότερο να πούμε: «Εγώ φταίω. Ποιος διάβολος; Και τι δουλειά έχω εγώ με τον διάβολο; Με έβαλε αυτός να αμαρτήσω; Καλά, μπορεί να με έβαλε, αλλά εγώ ήθελα και αμάρτησα». Μη πούμε «ο διάβολος με έβαλε». Εγώ ήθελα, εγώ. Εάν εγώ δεν ήθελα, δεν θα μπορούσε τίποτε ο διάβολος να μου κάνει. Άρα λοιπόν εγώ ήθελα. Και αφού ήθελα, έχω την ενοχή. Αυτό σε τι με βοηθάει;
