Summary

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem teaches catechumens to believe rightly in the Holy Spirit as the third divine Person of the one Holy Trinity. At Pentecost the single Spirit appeared as divided tongues of fire and filled everyone gathered in the Upper Room, just as the baptized receive and are sealed by the Spirit. The Holy Spirit sanctifies and deifies believers by separating them from sin and profanation, while the Divine Liturgy unites love of God with communion among the faithful.

My dear friends, we are now in paragraph 16 of Saint Cyril’s fourth catechetical lecture, concerning the Holy Spirit. As I remind you, Saint Cyril is giving us a concise presentation of the principal doctrines of the faith, which he intends to examine in detail later. For now, he wants the catechumens to have a general overview, a concise outline, we might say, of these truths of the faith. So he now comes to speak to us briefly about the Holy Spirit, since he reserves a much fuller treatment of the Holy Spirit for another catechetical lecture.

“Believe also in the Holy Spirit, and have a right understanding of Him, because many are estranged from the Holy Spirit or teach blasphemous things about Him.”

Indeed. After speaking to us about God in general, Saint Cyril stated that God is one. And when we Christians say “God,” we primarily mean the Father. Of course, the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is God. God is one.

He spoke chiefly about the Father and explained this teaching to us. Then he spoke about the Son, who became man, and now he speaks about the Holy Spirit. This is why he says, “Believe also in the Holy Spirit.” The word “also” presupposes knowledge of the other two Persons of the Holy Trinity. And you must have a right understanding of the Holy Spirit, because many are estranged from the Holy Spirit and teach blasphemous doctrines about Him. My dear friends, I must tell you that something very serious is at stake here. For an understanding

of the Holy Spirit that is false ultimately becomes blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.

Of course, I would not want to frighten you here, although Saint Cyril, in his extensive treatment of the Holy Spirit, says: “Take care, take care, lest we say something incorrect and ultimately find ourselves blaspheming against the Holy Spirit.” If you will allow me, I would say that this is not meant entirely literally. Someone who does not know much about the Holy Spirit, or does not fully know what our Church teaches, may say something mistaken. This does not mean that he is therefore a blasphemer against the Holy Spirit, much less that he will never be forgiven, according to the word of the Lord that whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit has no forgiveness either in this age or in the age to come. That is not precisely what is meant. What is meant is a false teaching about the Holy Spirit in which someone stubbornly persists. That, indeed, is another matter. For example, when the millennialists insult the Holy Spirit by saying that He is merely one of God’s divine uncreated energies—simply an energy of God.

In reality, the millennialists are anti-Trinitarian. Here one can immediately test and identify their teaching, just as we might take food to a laboratory to determine how it has been adulterated. We can immediately see the root and starting point of the millennialist heresy: they are anti-Trinitarian. Everything else follows from their anti-Trinitarianism. And because they are anti-Trinitarian, they Judaize. This is perfectly clear. Yet this is how heresy works: they do not reject the Son or the Holy Spirit outright. They accept them, but assign them a different place. If they rejected them altogether, they would have no way of drawing Christians into something foreign. It would be very strange, almost unthinkable, for a Christian to be converted to Islam, whereas he may be converted to, and led astray by, a so-called Christian heresy. But they regard the Son as a creature and the Holy Spirit as an energy of God. We therefore see that this truly is a foreign path. Saint Cyril calls such people strangers to the Holy Spirit. But there is something more as well: blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. There are, of course, many interpretations of this saying of the Lord.

I think that perhaps the most widely accepted interpretations are these. First, blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is fundamentally heresy—any heresy, not only a heresy directed specifically against the Holy Spirit, but every heresy that opposes Christian teaching. Such heresy is—pardon me—blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. Second, someone may hold the right faith in the teaching of the Gospel, yet persist in sin. Thus, in either case—here we must bring these two cases together, because you might ask: What about someone...

who was a heretic but has now come to metanoia, to repentance? Does he remain unforgiven? If he did remain unforgiven, why would we make any effort to restore a millennialist to the Orthodox faith? Do you not think that would be futile? Here you can judge and understand what blasphemy truly is. Would it not be futile to say that once someone has fallen into heresy, there is no point in trying to save him because he cannot be saved? Once you have professed a heresy, did not the Lord plainly say that whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit has no forgiveness, either in this age or in the age to come? What, then, is the truth? Whether you sin or do not sin, whether you are a heretic...

if in the end you do not repent, then you are lost. This is called blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, and it means that you are not forgiven. What, then, is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit? It is unrepentance. Yet it seems that Saint Cyril, even if he expressed himself with some exaggeration, was not wrong. He was not wrong. You know, the Saints handled holy things with fear and trembling—with fear and trembling. Therefore, when Saint Cyril handles the Word of God and the truth of God, he trembles, just as a priest would tremble while holding the holy artos, the blessed Bread, in his hands, and as a believer would tremble when receiving the Body and Blood of Christ in Holy Communion.

So, trembling as he holds these things of inestimable worth—for the Word of God is beyond price—he says: “Let us take care, lest we say something false and find ourselves among those who blaspheme against the Holy Spirit and have no forgiveness forever.” You will see him say this when we reach the extensive treatment he gives in a much later catechetical lecture. For now, however, let us consider several things Saint Cyril tells us here about the Holy Spirit. “But you must learn that this Holy Spirit is one.” You, then, must learn that the Holy Spirit is one.

The Father is one, the Son is one, and the Holy Spirit is one; yet one plus one plus one equals one. This is the Mystery of the Holy Trinity. I will say only a few words about it, since naturally there is no intention to say more at present. Aristotle taught that every object or person has its own essence. Therefore, if an essence belongs to each person, then if we have three persons, we have three essences. And because certain thinkers employed...

philosophical principles such as this one of Aristotle—which is unquestionably correct within the created world, since every person has his own essence and every object has its own essence—some philosophically minded Christians attempted to apply these Aristotelian categories and principles to God. They reached an impasse and began inventing ways of speaking about the doctrine of the Holy Trinity that ultimately led them to acknowledge only one God, namely...

the Father, as I told you last time. Do you remember the doctrine of Huiopatoria, the “Son-Father” teaching? Do you remember Saint Cyril referring to it here—or perhaps in an earlier passage; I do not remember now, and I do not wish to delay—that God first appears as the Father, then appears as the Son, and afterward appears as the Holy Spirit? In this way they preserve the outward form and language of Holy Scripture, but they destroy the truth of the divinity and of the Persons. They began from philosophical premises. This is why the great Fathers of our Church who spoke theologically were not philosophers. I mention this because recently an attempt was made—even on television—to claim that the Fathers of our Church were philosophers. Someone responded in a published article that the Fathers of our Church were not philosophers. If they used certain philosophical forms or philosophical terminology and gave them new theological content, that is another matter. But they were not philosophers, because the starting point of the Fathers was revelation. By contrast, those who approached the faith as philosophers fell into heresy. For what is heresy?

It is the rationalistic interpretation of doctrine. That is heresy. Therefore, the Holy Spirit is one.

“Undivided, indivisible, manifold in power.” The Holy Spirit is not divided, but He distributes the gifts. The Holy Spirit appeared like fire. There were about one hundred and twenty people in the place where the disciples and the other faithful were gathered. I do not know whether you are aware that the Holy Spirit, appearing as tongues of fire, was received not only by the Twelve, but by all one hundred and twenty who were gathered in the Upper Room.

It was not only the Twelve who became Spirit-bearers, with Matthias having been chosen among them, while the others in the Upper Room were left without a share in the Holy Spirit. Everyone in the Upper Room received the Holy Spirit, just as all the faithful who are baptized receive the Holy Spirit—you and I, I and you, and everyone. We all receive the Holy Spirit. It is another question whether the Holy Spirit then remains inactive within us because of our many sins. Furthermore, the Holy Spirit gives His gifts in accordance with the capacity we possess—not merely the capacity God has given us...

but the capacity we ourselves desire to possess. Saint Cyril gives a beautiful example in his extensive catechetical lecture on the Holy Spirit. He says: “You will draw water from the ocean of the Holy Spirit according to the size of the bucket, the vessel, that you carry. If your vessel is small, you will draw little water. If your vessel is large, you will draw much water. It depends on you.” The Holy Spirit, then, appeared as a single flame. Those in the Upper Room saw one fire, and that fire was then divided and rested upon the head of each person like a tongue—a tongue means a flame—a tongue of fire upon each one’s head. Why did it first appear as one and then become divided?

It was to show—pay attention—that the fire itself was not the Holy Spirit; He appeared like fire. Likewise, at Baptism the dove itself was not the Holy Spirit; He appeared like a dove. The Holy Spirit also manifested Himself in the Upper Room through a sound like a rushing wind. It was like the sound of wind, but it was neither wind nor merely a sound. This manifestation was intended to show two things: that the Holy Spirit is one and indivisible, while it is the gifts that He distributes. Thus, as Saint Cyril beautifully says, He is “indivisible, yet distributing”—“distributing the gifts,” as a beautiful troparion for the day of Pentecost says. He distributes the gifts. He is manifold in power.

“Working many things, yet Himself remaining undivided.” This is precisely what I have told you. He accomplishes many things, but He is not divided or broken into pieces. “He who knows the mysteries”—the One who knows all the mysteries. Which mysteries? Not, of course, only the seven Mysteries, but all the mysteries of God and of creation. The Holy Spirit knows the Mystery of Christ’s Second Coming, because He is God. He knows the mystery of creation—what creation is, what its nature is, and what it truly means.

What is the nature of the Kingdom of God—that is, of creation renewed? This is a mystery. You see how the book of the Apocalypse speaks to us entirely through images, because images are the only way we can speak of these things. What else can we say? Only the Holy Spirit knows the reality itself. All these things are mysteries—the mysteries of God. Thus, the Holy Spirit knows the mysteries: “He who searches all things, even the depths of God.” He searches everything: human hearts, human history, creation, the angels, and the demons.

He knows everything; He searches all things, even the depths of God, because He is God. It would be utterly inconceivable otherwise. We say that none of the rational beings—neither human beings nor angels—knows or will ever know the essence of God. But the Holy Spirit, consubstantial with the Father and the Son, is not merely of the same essence with Them: He knows the divine essence and even the depths of God’s essence. “He who descended upon the Lord Jesus Christ in the form of a dove” is the One who came down upon the Lord Jesus Christ in the visible form and likeness of a dove. “He who worked in the Law and the Prophets” is the One who worked in the Law given through Moses and in the Prophets. Have you ever truly considered that the Holy Spirit spoke through the mouths of the Prophets? This is why the Prophets are called inspired by God and bearers of the Spirit. They did not go astray in anything. Why? Because they spoke and recorded exactly what the Holy Spirit told them. And the Holy Spirit knows all things, all the mysteries—including, as I have said, the mysteries of history.

He knows not only the history that has already unfolded or is unfolding now, but also the history that is yet to unfold. The Holy Spirit knows that as well. Therefore, He reveals it, and the Prophets proclaim the future. We rub our eyes in amazement at how precisely these things come to pass. Who is it that declares all these things? The Holy Spirit.

“And now, at the time of Baptism, He seals the soul.” Lest anyone think that the Holy Spirit works only in certain chosen servants of God, such as the Prophets, or that He worked in the past but does not work now—see how beautifully Saint Cyril speaks here! This same Holy Spirit comes now, at the time when you are baptized, to seal your soul. He seals your soul. This is what I told you earlier: you have the Holy Spirit, and so do I. I have Him, and you have Him, since we were baptized in the name of the Holy Trinity.

After all, we received the Spirit of God. Having received the Spirit of God, through Him we cry, “Abba, Father.” We cannot call God our Father unless we have the Spirit of God. Thus, in the Holy Spirit we cry out, speak, and call upon God as Father. This is a great thing. “Of whose holiness every noetic nature has need.” The word “whose” here is a relative pronoun in the genitive: every noetic nature has need of the holiness of the Holy Spirit. And what are these noetic natures?

The angels. In other words, even the angels need the Holy Spirit. Yes, because the Holy Spirit sustains the whole of created existence, both irrational and rational. “Whoever dares to blaspheme Him has no forgiveness, either in this present age or in the age to come.” If anyone dares to blaspheme, he has no forgiveness, either now or ever. “He is honored with the Father and the Son with equal dignity.” He is equally honored. “Of Him the Dominions, Principalities, and Powers also have need.” The honor given to the Holy Spirit is equal to that given to the Father and to the Son.

Therefore, I would like you to understand this: when we offer our prayer to the Father, at the same time our prayer is also directed to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. When we pray to Jesus Christ—I say Jesus Christ rather than simply the Son, because the Son became man and remains forever with His human nature—we must speak of Him as Jesus Christ, not merely as the Word. His human nature cannot be denied; He retains it unto the ages of ages.

Our prayer is also addressed to the Father and to the Holy Spirit. And when we pray to the Holy Spirit, saying, “O Heavenly King, Comforter, the Spirit of Truth, who art everywhere present,” and so forth, this is a prayer to the Holy Spirit. Yet our prayer is also addressed to the Father and to the Son. It is another matter that, for a particular reason, we may make a distinction and address the Father, Jesus Christ, or the Holy Spirit directly. We may, of course, say, “Our Father, send Your Holy Spirit to illumine us.” But we may equally say:

“Holy Spirit, illumine us,” because the Holy Spirit is sent by the Father, yet He also acts by His own divine power. He is sent by the Son, yet He also acts by His own divine power. We may simply say, “Holy Spirit, come and illumine me.” It is the same. All these are different forms and variations of prayer, each perhaps expressing something particular. Yet, as I have explained, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are equal in divine power.

Saint Cyril repeats that even the Thrones, Dominions, Principalities, and Powers have need of the Holy Spirit—not only “every noetic nature,” as he said before. These are names of the angelic orders. As you know, there are nine angelic orders, whose names are found in Holy Scripture. The Apostle Paul gives us all these names. Four of them are Thrones, Dominions, Principalities, and Powers. In other words, the whole angelic world has need of the Holy Spirit, by whom it is nourished, lives, and exists.

Let me also mention that the Holy Spirit will be our nourishment. When the resurrection of the dead takes place, who will raise us? In Holy Scripture we read that the Father will raise us, just as He raised the Son. Elsewhere we read that the Son will raise us, and elsewhere that the Holy Spirit will raise us. Quite simply, God will raise us: all three Persons will raise us, because God is one. And what shall we have then? Certainly the Father, certainly the Son, and certainly the Holy Spirit. Yet in every passage one Person is especially emphasized. That is why these distinctions are made: in each case, something particular is being emphasized.

In this case, it is the Holy Spirit who will make us spiritual human beings. Here “spiritual” does not mean merely, “I live a spiritual life,” but, “I am a spiritual being.” More precisely, the body that rises will be called a spiritual body. So please open all four of your ears—the two ears of the body and the two of the soul—and listen carefully to this expression. The bodies that rise will be our real bodies; they will not be dematerialized.

They will be our former, real bodies, just as the body of Christ that rose from the tomb was the very body that had been crucified. We know this negatively because the tomb was empty, and positively because, when the disciples touched Him, His body bore the marks of the nails. And because Christ is the One who opened the way for our own resurrection, our bodies will be those same former bodies, raised and renewed.

They will be new bodies. They will no longer be subject to biological laws, but directly to the command of the Holy Spirit. That is why they are called spiritual bodies. That is all the expression means. But when many people read about spiritual bodies, they imagine that the bodies will be immaterial. No. “Spiritual body” does not mean an immaterial body; it means a body no longer governed by biological laws. It will not eat, drink, sleep, or marry. Nor will it be subject to gravity and the other laws of nature.

My body now has weight and is also moving toward corruption and, ultimately, death. All these things—the body’s present physical and biological conditions—will be abolished. The body will therefore be new in the sense that it will be directed, sustained, and kept in existence by the Holy Spirit. Thus, throughout eternity, the Holy Spirit will be the One who sustains our new bodies.

“There is one God, the Father of Christ; and one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only-Begotten Son of the one God; and one Holy Spirit.” One Father, one Son, one Holy Spirit. He is “the One who sanctifies and deifies all things”—the One who grants theosis and sanctifies everything. Let me dwell for a moment on the words “sanctifies and deifies,” beginning with “sanctifies.” The Holy Spirit sanctifies everything and, in this case, the human person. What does it mean to sanctify?

The word “sanctify” has two meanings. Its primary meaning is “to set apart,” and its second meaning is “to make something virtuous and holy.” In its primary sense, to sanctify means to set apart: the Holy Spirit causes a person to separate himself from sin, from the world, and from everything profane. And we know that it is Baptism that sets the believer apart. My dear friends, let us receive this truth and hold firmly to it.

Let us finally begin to put it into practice. There is a fearsome word spoken by Christ our God in the Old Testament and renewed in the New Testament. God says, “Come out and be separate”—for “to separate” means to set apart—“and touch nothing unclean.” And He calls His people holy. You know how the Jews were called God’s holy people. What does “holy” mean here? Did those people commit no sins? They did commit sins, and at times very grave ones. Here, “holy people” means that this people had been set apart from the idolaters.

That people had no fellowship with the idolaters. And, as I tell you once again, the same applies to God’s people of the New Testament. How have we managed to entangle ourselves with everything profane in this world, even entering into fellowship with it in the name of Christ’s love? It seems to me that we profane even the love of Christ—and Christ Himself. Suppose someone dared to say, “I do not wish to have close associations with whatever is filthy in this world. I will greet everyone courteously, but I will not enter into close fellowship with them, because I have set myself apart”

—that is, sanctified himself by separating himself from everything profane. Such a person would be regarded as lacking love, as harsh and isolated, and, to use an expression coined by a university professor on television, as having undergone an immediate “verticalization.” According to this professor, in its earliest period and during the first centuries, the Divine Liturgy had a “horizontal” dimension and a social character. A social character! But in Byzantium, he says, the Divine Liturgy became mystical—as though the mystical element had previously been absent.

So the mystical element was supposedly absent from the Divine Liturgy in the first centuries. What a strange claim! This was said on television, on the recording you gave me to hear. How is that possible? The mystical element, they say, was absent in the first centuries and was invented in Byzantine times. And from the moment the Divine Liturgy acquired a mystical dimension, he says, it immediately took on a vertical orientation: each believer could commune with God and care about nothing else. This is nonsense—mere nonsense. The very name of the Divine Liturgy shows that it also has a horizontal dimension,

its communal character. The Greek words laos and ergon mean a public work, a work of the people. Therefore, the Divine Liturgy cannot be conceived without the presence of the people. Yet its purpose is for the whole people to be united with God. So we cannot speak of something merely horizontal or merely vertical. As you know, in our Orthodox worship the Divine Liturgy cannot be celebrated by one person alone, by the priest. This is not because he is unable to chant both the chanter’s parts and the priest’s parts, but because it is not permitted. This is precisely to express the communal character of the Divine Liturgy. If you will, the Divine Liturgy

makes the two commandments perceptible: love for God and love for our neighbor. The one is vertical, and the other horizontal. My dear friends, we cannot distort these things throughout history according to the cultural or political currents of each age. We cannot turn the Divine Liturgy into socialism, for God’s sake, and accuse Byzantium of giving it a vertical orientation merely because our own age happens to be socialist. What claims these are! Unthinkable things, alien and foreign to the faith. But we shall reserve a fuller discussion for another time.

The point relevant to our subject is this: when the Spirit of God sanctifies, He separates the people of God from everything profane. And whatever does not belong to God is called profane. My dear friends, the sea is not profane, nor is the mountain, the soil, the water, the animals, the fish, the birds, or the clouds. None of these things is profane. Only sin and those who bear it are profane. When people become bearers of sin, they are profane, and I cannot associate with them. Unless we come to understand this, we shall never be able to stand upright. We shall never be able to form a closed community. These are hard words!

Yes, they are. But this is the truth. You may ask me, “Are we to form a closed community?” I am not the one saying it. “But does this fit today’s political and cultural conditions?” I do not care whether it fits or not. These are unrelated and separate matters. As a citizen, I shall go and cast my vote, but my involvement goes no further. Of course I care who governs, but I cannot confuse this with the Church and the Divine Liturgy. I cannot speak of making the Divine Liturgy socialist or say that I do not care what is accomplished upon the Holy Table. For this too was said: that on the table, as he called it—the table the celebrants had in the center of the space—

there was—and listen to this cunning expression—there was what they could see. Listen: there was what they could see. And what did they see? Bread and wine. But the Freemasons teach this as well. They too have wine and bread, you know; I do not know whether you are aware of it. And in the mysteries of Mithras there was also wine and bread. We would then say, “What do the Freemasons have? What they can see: wine and bread.” And we would likewise say that upon the Holy Table we have only what we see. Away with such blasphemy! I do not think there could be any greater blasphemy than this. Is it merely what we see?

It is Christ Himself, the Body and Blood of Christ in the Mystery, whom we do not see. We see Him, yet we do not see Him. He is perceptible to the senses and at the same time hidden. It was the same with the incarnate Christ: they saw Him, yet they did not see Him. They could crucify Him because they did not see who He was; yet they saw Him, because it was He whom they crucified. Thus there are two aspects: I see, yet I do not see. I cannot therefore say that what is upon the Holy Table is only what I see. That is rationalism raised to the highest possible degree. Yet there is a second kind of sanctification brought about by the Holy Spirit: He helps us to become saints.

“Become holy, for I am holy.” Here this means: acquire the virtues; acquire what in ordinary speech we call holiness. This is holiness. And the Holy Spirit is the One who deifies, the One who makes gods. Whom does He make gods? Human beings. He makes them gods by grace. Just think about this, my dear friends: He makes human beings gods by grace. Who does this? The Holy Spirit. This is expressed beautifully in the prayer of Saint Symeon the New Theologian to the Holy Spirit, where he says so characteristically that it is the Holy Spirit who brings about his theosis.

The Holy Spirit brings about my theosis. “He who spoke in the Law and the Prophets.” Saint Cyril told us this earlier using exactly the same expression. He is the One who gave the Law, the One who spoke through the Prophets, “who spoke in both the Old and the New Testament.” He is the One who spoke in both the Old Testament and the New Testament. That is why the books of both Testaments are divinely inspired, and together they constitute the Word of God. You know how greatly those people err who say that the Old Testament does not concern us.

A few days ago, a young man came here with two young women who were wearing trousers. One of our deacons said to the young man, “Please, you may enter, but the young ladies may not.” “Why?” “Because their clothing is not appropriate; they are wearing trousers.” “And where did you find that written?” he asked. “It is written in Holy Scripture; the Old Testament says it.” “What? Those Jewish books?” Now listen: the man is not entirely to blame, when for the past several years in the schools...

teachers and professors have been saying that the Old Testament is a Jewish book and that the history of the Jews does not concern us. What else is that poor man to say? “Those Jewish books.” You see? These are the fruits of the education he has received. Blessed are those educators—truly blessed—who teach their students what is right. Blessed are they! I say this from the depths of my heart. They have a great reward from God in this difficult age if they are able to teach their students what is right. You see, once again: “Jewish books.”

The Holy Spirit spoke in the Old Testament and also in the New Testament. The books of both have equal authority, and we must study the Old Testament and the New Testament equally. Yet there is a tendency among us to say, “No, no—not the Old Testament, only the New Testament.” This is a grave error! We need both the Old and the New Testament equally. Look at the Fathers of our Church and see how thoroughly they knew the Old Testament—how deeply versed they were in it and in its truth. See how freely they moved throughout all of Holy Scripture, both the New Testament and the Old, and you will understand the true and proper attitude

that they maintained and that we too must maintain. I have struggled for this all my life, and I would be happy—I have said this before in exactly the same words—if even a few people would one day learn this great truth: that we must read the whole of Holy Scripture. From “In the beginning God made heaven and earth” to the final book of the New Testament, the Apocalypse, where the Spirit and the Bride say, “Come, Lord Jesus.” “Yes, I am coming quickly. Amen.” Right to the end—the whole of Holy Scripture. Why? Because all of it is divinely inspired. I shall read it again: “The Holy Spirit, who spoke in the Law and the Prophets, in both the Old and the New Testament.”

“Always keep this seal in your mind. For now these things have been stated briefly, by way of summary; but if the Lord grants it, they will be explained, as far as we are able, with proofs from the Scriptures.” Always keep this seal of the Holy Spirit within your mind. Everything we are saying is being presented as a summary, briefly; we are merely touching the outermost edges. “But if the Lord grants it”—if the Lord provides and gives—then these things will be explained to you, as far as we are able, together with proofs from the Scriptures.

“With proofs from the Scriptures, they will be explained as far as we are able.” They will be explained according to our ability, but together with proofs from Holy Scripture. Saint Cyril will go on to tell

his catechumens: “What we say will be said on the authority of the Scriptures handed down to us.” What we say will be neither conjecture nor constructions of the human intellect. “Do not pay heed to me or believe me,” he says, “if I tell you something without also providing proof from Holy Scripture.” So whatever I tell you must be of this kind, because the safeguarding of our faith rests not on clever inventions, but on proof from the divine Scriptures. We see this in the Fathers, because in those days there were

heretics and unbelievers ready to attack everything they said. This compelled the Fathers to stand ready for battle, with their quivers full—completely full, that is, with ammunition. For this reason, they studied Holy Scripture extensively, so that their arguments would always be ready. They said nothing without evidence. Today, however, I do not know why, even though our age closely resembles that earlier age and we have many heretics ready to contradict us, we are not prepared to present them with proof from Holy Scripture. You may ask me whether our opponent, the one contradicting us,

will accept it if we say, “This is written there in Holy Scripture.” Will he accept it? He may say, “How do I know that? Where is it written? How? What does it mean? Who wrote it? And why should I accept Holy Scripture?” Ah, stop there. Wait. My arguments come from Holy Scripture. Holy Scripture is the treasury of divine revelation. Do you believe that? “How do I know?” Then, good night. We shall turn our backs and leave. If he does not accept the premise of Holy Scripture, we cannot have a discussion, because everything we say will come from Holy Scripture. What else can we do? You may ask, then,

“Are we simply to let him go?” If we do not let him go, might we fall into the clever invention that Saint Cyril warns against here? And what is this invention? It is when we begin to devise arguments with our own intellect, trying to speak to him and prove this or that. Suppose we speak to him about the soul. “What evidence do you have?” he will ask us. “Christ spoke about the soul in this way. Have you not read Holy Scripture?” So even Christ makes use of Holy Scripture. Of course He does. When God speaks to Moses through the Burning Bush, He says, “I am the Lord your God, the God of your father Abraham, the God of your father Isaac,”

“and the God of your father Jacob.” God is not the God of the dead, but of the living. When God says, “I am the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,” this means that they are alive. There, then, is the proof. “But I do not accept that.” Then that is precisely why I tell you, my dear friend, that we cannot continue the discussion. “But we must keep him with us.” Let us make an attempt, in case he is well disposed and may advance a little further. But if we see that he is acting in bad faith, do you know what will happen to us? We shall begin descending the steps and wandering along the paths of philosophy. We shall resort to philosophy in order to tell him certain things. Then we are no longer doing theology; we are doing philosophy, and this will not save him.

My dear friends, this is why the key is faith. And faith means accepting that the Word of God is divinely inspired. Once we accept that, we can make a very good beginning. I can show you everything from there. And do you know what happens then? Is it not something truly great? Something exceedingly great. When a believer begins in this way, from faith, he then begins to experience the proof for himself. But the one who does not begin with faith will never have this experience of the proof. Never! He will remain outside. So let us not be afraid to take this stand when necessary. It is not a lack of love. It is something that seeks to preserve both ourselves and the other person. One day, he may return.

Otherwise, as I told you, we lose our way in the vast sea of philosophical paths. Nothing comes of it! We accomplish nothing. We ourselves are unequal to the task. No matter how much wisdom we possess or how much we know, we accomplish nothing—nothing at all. You may say that the Fathers sometimes began with certain philosophical frameworks. But they never remained within those frameworks. They quickly left them behind and moved on to theology. Saint Basil the Great did this, yes, but he never remained within philosophical frameworks. I emphasize this once again. And so, if we have truly understood how the Spirit of God works within Holy Scripture and how the Word of God must be presented,

perhaps we will achieve better results. Let us not be afraid that we will not have many followers. That does not matter. It does not matter. After all, the Apostle Paul himself writes, “For not all have faith.” This eagerness of ours to “save” the whole world has made us all, in quotation marks, “worldly.” And the eagerness of our Church to save everyone has caused the Church to become like the world—that is, to become secularized. This is one sign, though not the only one, of the secularization of the Church. It is tragic. Let us reconsider, then...

how we study the Word of God and how we present the Word of God, remembering that it is the Spirit of God who must preserve all things at every moment. Therefore, we shall live and move under the guidance of the Spirit of God, who is the third Person of the Holy Trinity.

είναι ο Πατήρ, όπως σας έλεγα την περασμένη φορά. Το ενθυμείσθε για την Υιοπατορία; Το ενθυμείσθε που το λέγει εδώ ο Άγιος Κύριλλος, που αναφέρεται μια προηγουμένη — δεν θυμάμαι τώρα, να μην αργώ — που ο Θεός εμφανίζεται πρώτα ως Πατήρ, μετά εμφανίζεται ως Υιός και μετά εμφανίζεται ως Πνεύμα Άγιον. Και έτσι διασώζουν το σχήμα, το εκφραστικό της Αγίας Γραφής, αλλά καταστρέφουν όμως την θεότητα, τα πρόσωπα. Αυτοί ξεκίνησαν από φιλοσοφικές θέσεις. Γι' αυτό οι μεγάλοι πατέρες της Εκκλησίας μας, που μίλησαν θεολογικά, δεν ήσαν φιλόσοφοι. Έρχομαι να το πω αυτό γιατί τελευταία έγινε μια προσπάθεια να ειπωθεί — από την τηλεόραση ειπώθηκε αυτό — ότι ήσαν φιλόσοφοι οι πατέρες της Εκκλησίας μας, και τους αντικρούει κάποιος σ' ένα έντυπο που εκδίδεται, ότι οι πατέρες της Εκκλησίας μας δεν ήσαν φιλόσοφοι. Αν χρησιμοποίησαν κάποια φιλοσοφικά σχήματα ή φιλοσοφική ορολογία για να δώσουν νέο περιεχόμενο θεολογικό, αυτό είναι άλλο πράγμα. Αλλά δεν ήσαν φιλόσοφοι, διότι η αφετηρία των πατέρων ήταν η αποκάλυψις. Αντιθέτως, όσοι στάθηκαν φιλόσοφοι έπεσαν στην αίρεση. Διότι τι είναι η αίρεσις;

Που εμείς θέλουμε να διαθέτουμε. Και με ένα πολύ ωραίο παράδειγμα του Αγίου Κυρίλλου, που μιλεί για το Άγιο Πνεύμα στην εκτενή κατήχησή του, λέγει: «Ανάλογα με τον κουβά που κουβαλάς, το δοχείο, θα πάρεις νερό από τον ωκεανό του Αγίου Πνεύματος. Μικρό σκεύος έχεις, λίγο θα πάρεις νερό. Μεγάλο σκεύος έχεις, πολύ νερό θα πάρεις. Από σένα εξαρτάται». Το Πνεύμα το Άγιο λοιπόν ενεφανίσθη σαν μία φλόγα, μία. Είδαν μία φωτιά οι ευρισκόμενοι στο Υπερώο, η οποία φωτιά εμερίσθη, χωρίστηκε και κάθισε στην κεφαλή σαν μια γλώσσα — γλώσσα θα πει φλόγα — μια γλώσσα πυρός στο κεφάλι του καθενός. Γιατί ενεφανίσθη μία αρχικά και μετά εμερίσθη;

Επήραμε το Πνεύμα του Θεού, εξάλλου. Παίρνοντας το Πνεύμα του Θεού, δια του Πνεύματος του Θεού κράζομε: «Αββά, ο Πατήρ». Δεν μπορούμε να πούμε τον Θεόν Πατέρα, εάν δεν έχουμε το Πνεύμα του Θεού. Εν Αγίω Πνεύματι, λοιπόν, φωνάζομε, λέμε, επικαλούμεθα τον Θεόν Πατέρα. Είναι μεγάλο πράγμα. Ου και πάσα νοητή φύσις χρήζει της αγιότητος. Του οποίου —«ου», δασεία και περισπωμένη, αναφορική γενική—, του οποίου Αγίου Πνεύματος κάθε νοητή φύσις έχει ανάγκη από την αγιότητα. Ποιες είναι αυτές οι νοητές φύσεις;

Εις εστίν Θεός, ο του Χριστού Πατήρ, και εις Κύριος Ιησούς Χριστός, ο του μόνου Θεού Μονογενής Υιός, και εν το Πνεύμα το Άγιο. Ένας ο Πατήρ, ένας ο Υιός, ένα το Πνεύμα το Άγιο. Το πάντων αγιαστικόν και θεοποιόν, εκείνο που θεοποιεί και αγιάζει τα πάντα. Να μείνω λίγο στο αγιαστικόν και θεοποιόν. Και πρώτα το αγιαστικόν. Λοιπόν, το Πνεύμα το Άγιον αγιάζει κάθε τι και, εν προκειμένω, τον άνθρωπο. Τι θα πει αγιάζει;

υπήρχε —ακούστε έκφραση, πόσο πονηρά πράγματα— υπήρχε ό,τι έβλεπαν. Ακούστε: υπήρχε ό,τι έβλεπαν. Τι έβλεπαν; Ψωμί και κρασί. Μα αυτό το διδάσκουν και οι μασόνοι. Και αυτοί έχουν, ξέρετε, κρασί και ψωμί. Δεν ξέρω αν το έχετε υπ’ όψιν σας. Και ο Μίθρας, στα μυστήρια του Μίθρα, υπήρχε το κρασί και το ψωμί. Και τότε θα λέγαμε: οι μασόνοι τι έχουν; Ό,τι βλέπουν, δηλαδή κρασί και ψωμί. Και θα λέγαμε κι εμείς ότι επί της Αγίας Τραπέζης έχουμε ό,τι βλέπουμε. Άπαγε της βλασφημίας! Νομίζω δεν θα μπορούσε να υπάρξει βαρύτερη βλασφημία από αυτή. Είναι ό,τι βλέπουμε;
