Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem teaches that the ascended Jesus Christ will return visibly from heaven to judge the living and the dead and reign eternally. Believers must reject earthly false christs and claims of an invisible return, since the true Christ will appear openly from heaven and be seen by all. The lecturer interprets the trampling of the holy city as a recurring warning that Christians and church leaders can admit idolatrous worldly ideologies into the Church by compromising faith with sin.

Continuing, my dear friends, with the fourth catechetical lecture of Saint Cyril, which gives a summary of the most important doctrines of our faith, we now come to the Ascension of Christ.
This section concerns the Ascension of Christ and the judgment to come. Thus Jesus, Christ who ascended, will come again from heaven, not from the earth. And I say “not from the earth” because many antichrists will appear, coming from the earth.
For already, as you have seen, many have begun to say, “I am Christ.” And then the abomination of desolation will come, falsely taking upon itself the name of Christ.
Therefore, await the true Christ, the Son of God, the Only-Begotten, who will no longer come from the earth but from heaven. He will appear to everyone, brighter than every flash of lightning and every radiance of light, escorted by angels. He will come to judge the living and the dead and to reign in a heavenly kingdom that is eternal and without end. Be certain of this as well, for many claim that Christ’s Kingdom will have an end. This is a short paragraph about the judgment to come, but it contains several noteworthy points. Before I continue, you saw that I read the text aloud.
School curricula now say that patristic texts, for example, and the works of other ancient authors should be presented directly in translation; thus the original text is beginning to disappear from our schools. I will continue to insist on the original text, and all who can do the same should do so. We must not say that, because our people will begin not to know ancient Greek, we should therefore stop reading the original. I believe that if the Church insists on reading the original text, she will accomplish something and provide a counterbalance. We should preserve the practice of reading the Gospel text as we do in the Divine Liturgy and then explaining it, and we should do the same when studying patristic texts such as this one.
We should read the original text and then translate and explain it. When we quote passages from Holy Scripture to enrich a homily, I believe they should be read in the original and then explained. In other words, we must keep our people in contact with the ancient texts. I have told you before that, when the state does not understand certain things, or when there are enemies of the faith and of our homeland, then we who do understand must learn to protect ourselves and respond in our own way. And what is that way? Gentlemen, if you abolish ancient Greek, we will continue teaching it in our own way.
For these are our roots. They are our roots. What would you think when you hear that this text—which, I assure you, dates from the fourth century, from around AD 350—is very easy to understand? I assure you that only now and then do I encounter an unfamiliar word, and even then it is not truly unfamiliar. My knowledge of ancient Greek is simply what I learned in secondary school—and, if you will, during the hard years of the occupation. I am a philologist. The text contains no truly unknown words. The few that seem unfamiliar are actually known, except that they carried a somewhat different meaning in that period. So now and then I consult a dictionary to find the particular meaning a word had at that time.
So I ask: will a child still be able to read this text? No, the child will not. A translator will be needed. And if you consider that these texts may very well never be translated, they will eventually remain unknown. That is why we must insist on maintaining contact with the ancient texts. Do not regard this as wearisome. It is necessary and important; this is what we must do. I made this brief introduction because I read the paragraph to you in the original, as I do every time. Indeed, perhaps the day will come when we ourselves must undertake to teach our children ancient Greek. I do not know.
Somehow, we must begin to do this. Ancient Greek is not an obsolete language; it is not something we no longer need. The ancient Greek language is a key—not only a key to understanding our roots and our culture, but also a key to understanding many other things. For this reason, I pray that one day people will understand that the Greek language must be preserved. My dear friends, the Germans, the French, the English, and the Japanese are not foolish when they establish university chairs in ancient Greek. They are not foolish. We are the foolish ones. Yes, the Japanese have a university chair in ancient Greek.
Can you imagine why? Is it merely a luxury, so that they can say they are learning ancient Greek? Of course not. The ancient Greek language is a key, and they use that key to enter into the secrets of knowledge, wisdom, and culture. And why should I not also mention ancient Greek literature? Yet let me confine myself to the texts of Holy Scripture and the writings of the Fathers of the Church. These are priceless treasures that foreigners do not possess as their own. How will we understand them if we do not have the key? Through translation? Remember my words. The day will come.
All these things will be forgotten because translations will no longer be made, and those that are made will be inadequate. The way matters are going is not good at all. At least as far as classical education is concerned, within a very few years our children will be completely uneducated—completely. This will be a disaster greater than you can imagine. You cannot imagine the consequences that our ignorance of the Greek language will bring. But let us continue. Thus Jesus, Christ who ascended, will come again from heaven, not from the earth. And I emphasize the words “not from the earth.”
For many antichrists will appear, coming from the earth. Already, as you have seen, many have begun to say, “I am Christ.” Indeed, what is especially characteristic of the events of our salvation is that Christ will come again, for this is the culmination of our salvation. He once said to His disciples, “I will come again and take you with Me, and you will be with Me forever.” These words are the culmination of salvation. For if we say that we must live a spiritual life, but...
If the spiritual life does not lead to a final destination, then what is its purpose? This is precisely what the Apostle Paul says: if the dead are not raised, then our faith is in vain and our preaching is also in vain. Why should we remain faithful if we have a beginning but no end, no purpose? The problem is that very many of our Christians do not understand this. They think it is something outrageous, strange, something their minds and thoughts cannot grasp: that Christ will come again, that there will be the Second Coming of Christ. They wish to remain within a headless Christianity—a Christianity without, we might say...
There is no final purpose. That is foolishness. My dear friends, Christ will come again, and this is an unshakable doctrine of the faith, according to the words, “And He shall come again with glory to judge the living and the dead.” He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead—that is, those who will still be alive and those who will already have died and will be raised. He will judge everyone. Therefore, as I have told you, the Second Coming of Christ is the purpose and meaning of our Christian faith. Let none of the beloved brethren present here be found among those who...
Let no one doubt the Second Coming of Christ. This truth is confirmed at every moment. For, as I have told you, Christianity is not a theory; it is founded on events that continually confirm all these things. When Christ was taken up into heaven, two angels, two men, drew the attention of the disciples and of all those present who witnessed that wondrous sight as they watched Christ ascending. The angels said to them, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking at Jesus as He ascends into heaven?”
“He will return in the same manner in which you saw Him ascend.” Thus, there we have not only the testimony that He will come again—although the Lord Himself said so many times—but also, in the first chapter of Acts, the manner in which He will return: just as He departed. This agrees with what Christ said in the twenty-fifth chapter of Matthew: “When the Son of Man comes.” That is the crucial point: the Son of Man. In other words, He will come with His human nature, which He has certainly not cast off. For heretics claim—and this heresy is not new but ancient, as we shall see at the end of the paragraph—that Christ’s human nature...
Was dissolved. Saint Cyril was already confronting this heresy. But was it dissolved? Then why did He assume it? Merely to come and speak to us? He could have spoken to us human beings as He spoke on Sinai. There would have been no reason for Him to assume our nature simply to dwell among us. No, my dear friends. Christ preserves His human nature forever in heaven. Forever! For through His human nature we are able to have communion with God. Otherwise, what kind of communion could a human being have with God? He could have none; it would be beyond him. This is why Adam felt alone, even though he did have communion with God. It is as though we were to say...
You, a human being, cannot feel entirely at ease in communion with God—if I may put it that way. You may ask, “How could anyone not feel at ease when he has communion with God?” Yes, but the human being desires something else as well. He desires God to be near him in another way. And this other way in which God draws near is the Incarnation. It is the Incarnation; it is what we celebrate in these days at Christmas. This is the great event. That is why Adam felt alone. He would not have felt alone if communion with God alone had fulfilled this human need. That is why God said—what did God say?—“It is not good for man to be alone.” It is not good for the human being to be alone.
He created Eve, and this remained the order of things until the fullness of time came and God became man. Until that happened, Eve had already been created so that Adam might have communion with another human being. Now, I am compressing time here, because you may say, “Wait—did the Son of God have to wait for a second human being to be created before He could come?” I have compressed these events into a single image, and I think you understand what I mean. Therefore Christ will return: the Son of God as man, forever possessing His human nature...
He will return to take us to Himself. Does not the Apostle Paul say that, when He comes, we shall be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord? Therefore, we must await Christ’s coming again with deep longing. Yet we must pay close attention to one point. Saint Cyril says that He comes again from heaven. Yes, the angels said that He would return in the same manner in which they saw Him depart. From where, then, will He come? From heaven. Why is there such emphasis on the fact that He will return from heaven?
For, as Saint Cyril says, many appear claiming to be christs, but they come from the earth, not from heaven. They come from the earth, and they are nothing but antichrists. We must therefore take care not to be deceived into thinking that such a person is Christ. The Lord Himself also told us that just as lightning—Christ Himself used this image—flashes across the sky from one end of the horizon to the other and is visible to everyone on earth, so too will the Second Coming of the Son of God, the Son of Man, be visible to everyone, just as lightning is visible throughout the region where it flashes.
In other words, His Second Coming will be from heaven and will be visible. These words immediately refute the millennialists concerning Christ’s coming. When their claims proved false, they said, “Ah, He did come, but He came invisibly.” What do you mean, invisibly? He retains His human nature, and His Second Coming will be visible. How could it be invisible? You are lying, then. You are deceived, you deceive others, and you remain in deception. You are lying. You have seen in our own time those who take up the fable of posing as a Messiah, as a Christ. Who are they? There are very many—very many. What can we say about all of them? They are antichrists. Yet many people are led astray by them. Many indeed.
There will be even more, because still more antichrists will appear—that is, false messiahs. How will we stand firm? By knowing Holy Scripture correctly. Christ, then, is coming, but He is coming from heaven, and all flesh will see Him, as John the Evangelist says in the Apocalypse. Every eye—every single person—will see the Lord. For, Saint Cyril says, “Many have already begun to say, ‘I am Christ.’ And the abomination of desolation is yet to come, falsely taking upon itself the name of Christ.”
Saint Cyril now moves from the many antichrists to the final Antichrist, the Antichrist in the fullest and proper sense. He uses the following phrase, which I will explain to you: “And the abomination of desolation is yet to come.” When will the Antichrist come? The abomination of desolation will come, “taking upon itself the false name of Christ.” It will falsely claim to be Christ, though in reality it will be the Antichrist. What, then, is this abomination of desolation? The Lord was asked when these things would take place.
The Lord said, “When you see the abomination of desolation...”
standing there—present in a place where it ought not to be—“let the reader understand.” Let the one who is able to understand, understand. He is speaking in veiled language. This prophecy is not new; it did not originate with Christ. The abomination of desolation, my beloved...
According to the prophecy of Daniel, it came in AD 70—or, more precisely, it began a few years before AD 70. The prophecy of Daniel, however, is not exhausted by its historical fulfillment at that time, which is the first level of the Lord’s interpretation. The abomination of desolation will be fulfilled many times throughout history, reaching its final form in the age of the Antichrist, at the Last Things (eschata). Let us explain. An abomination is something utterly detestable.
The abomination of desolation. Indeed—forgive me, I had written down the reference. I know it well enough to quote it to you. It is Matthew 24:15: “Therefore, when you see the abomination of desolation, spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place”—that is, when this abomination stands, remains, and is present in a holy place—“let the reader understand.” Let the one who reads understand. “Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains,” and so forth. What, then, was this holy place in the first instance? It was the sanctuary, the Temple of Solomon. What does “desolation” mean here?
It means that the grace of God would depart from the Temple, and in the place of the Temple, now desolate and emptied of the grace of God, an abomination would be set up. We know, moreover, that in Holy Scripture the term “abominations” refers chiefly to idols—to idolatry and its idols. So now we understand. The grace of God departs from the sacred place, from the holy place, and something is established there. What is established? The abomination. What abomination? An idol, or idols. And that is indeed what happened.
In essence, the abomination of desolation begins at three o’clock on Friday afternoon, when the Lord was crucified. From that moment it truly begins. For when the veil was torn, as the Lord breathed His last upon the Cross, the grace of God departed from the Temple. The Temple was left desolate. The grace of God was no longer there. It was finished; the Temple’s history had come to an end. A new history now begins—the New Testament—and it begins with the death of Christ upon the Cross.
The tearing of the veil is symbolic. It has many symbolic meanings, but the principal one is this: the veil covered what was within the Holy of Holies, signifying that no human eye was permitted to see what lay inside. That veil was always there. Only the high priest lifted it. So when we are told that the veil of the Temple was torn, it means that anyone could now see inside. We might compare it to the iconostasis, which conceals the sanctuary today. Imagine that the iconostasis were suddenly torn down. Once it had fallen, we would naturally be able to see what was taking place inside.
Thus, when people could now see inside, it signified that the grace of God had departed. Or, if you prefer, the tearing of the veil symbolically means that the grace of God flew away, departed, and was gone. It was no longer there. Afterward the Sicarii appeared, a strange group of zealots. Such zealots, it seems, are never absent from any manifestation of religion. Pretending to uphold the majesty of the Temple and the majesty of God, they went so far as to commit murder. Remember those men—they were Sicarii—about forty of them, who swore that they would not eat until they had murdered Paul. You remember the occasion when Paul appeared in Jerusalem and went to the Temple.
They cried, “Brothers, help us! This is the apostate! Come, let us kill him.” When they failed because Lysias the commander intervened, they devised a plan. They would request, under the pretense that Paul was to be tried by the council, that he be brought there; then, on the road between the Roman barracks and the council, they would attack the soldiers and kill Paul. Their plan was of course thwarted in the familiar way, and I need not recount all of that now. These men were Sicarii. They had sworn not to eat until they had killed Paul. This was already one form of abomination, because the Temple had now been profaned by murders. It was a dreadful thing. And in the end...
Titus came and set up a statue of Zeus in the Temple of Solomon, and the abomination was complete. “These things will happen,” the Lord said. “Truly, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place.” A generation, as is commonly understood, is thirty years. Thus, everything the Lord said referred to the destruction of Jerusalem, and Daniel’s prophecy was fulfilled with perfect exactness, in accordance with the Lord’s own interpretation. Yet Daniel’s prophecy is not exhausted by the historical destruction of Jerusalem.
It is not exhausted there, just as the Lord, in His interpretation, does not limit the prophecy to the destruction of Jerusalem. The proof lies in one point that confuses many people when they hear it. The Lord says, “And immediately afterward, the sun and the moon will be darkened.” But to what do these words refer? They refer to the Last Things (eschata). Holy Scripture, however, characteristically compresses time. In the very same sentence—not even placing a full stop between them—it speaks both of the destruction of Jerusalem and of the end of the world. This is a compression of time.
Someone not initiated into the interpretation of the Scriptures and the prophecies may become confused and ask, “What is this referring to?” Therefore, when the Lord says that the sun and the moon will then be darkened and that the Son of Man will appear, and so forth, all this shows that the abomination will also occur at that final time, even though it continues to recur throughout history. There is, however, this difference: the abomination and the desolation will not always take place in the ancient, historical Temple of Solomon, simply because that Temple no longer exists today. But it will be rebuilt. The Temple will be rebuilt...
by the Antichrist. When he has rebuilt it, he will set himself up inside it and, in the words of the Apostle Paul, present himself as God—God Himself—and in this way he will be worshiped. Yet because he is not God but a man, the final abomination in history will then be set up in the Temple he rebuilds. The grace of God will unquestionably not be present in that Temple. Therefore, it will be desolate. Desolate of what? Of the grace of God. And there the Antichrist himself, alive in the flesh, will take his stand.
He will demand to be worshiped, because he will perform wonders and, through his false miracles, will try to prove that he is Christ, that he is the God-Man. Whatever belongs to Christ, he will attempt to usurp for himself. He will first have unleashed a merciless persecution against Christ, and the Church of Christ will have disappeared from the face of the earth—or, rather, gone into hiding. It will then seem that Christ is weak and powerless, and that He is not truly God, since He did not manage to prevail. These things will take place at the end of history.
But I told you that these things recur throughout history, without the Temple of Solomon needing to be rebuilt in the meantime. From AD 70 until today, nearly two thousand years have passed, and I do not know how much longer we shall go on before the Temple is rebuilt. But as I told you, the abomination recurs. Yes, yes—listen to this. Listen, and do not be at all surprised at the form this abomination can take.
I want you to listen to this very carefully—very carefully, I beg you. If you were to ask me what has made the greatest impression on me in the Apocalypse, which I have been explaining here for four years, I would answer: certainly, all its passages are striking, but one passage in particular has left me astonished, because it is being fulfilled in our own time.
So it is extremely relevant today. This made a very deep impression on me. What is it? The angel who interprets and explains the visions and guides the holy Evangelist John through them shows him the city of God—that is, Jerusalem, but the earthly Jerusalem—and says to him, “Take this measuring rod, and come, let us measure the Temple.” Then they also measured the altar. Afterward he tells him, “Do not measure anything else. The rest of the city will be given over to be trampled by the nations for forty-two months.”
The rest of the city. All the interpreters, all the Fathers, agree that this city, Jerusalem, is the Church. What is striking here is that only the Temple and the altar of burnt offerings are measured. In the ancient Temple, that altar stood a few yards in front of the main entrance to the Temple proper. Why does the angel say that only these two should be measured and that everything else should remain unmeasured? To measure means to know the dimensions of something.
In science, it is only when we measure a quantity that we master it. When we cannot measure it, we cannot master it. This is well known. Once we have measured it, it is ours. What does it mean to master something? It means that I know it because I have measured it. Thus, the Temple and the altar are known by God. But does God not know everything? Ah, for God to know something here means that He acknowledges it as His own. When He says, “I will by no means remember the names of sinners,” does that mean God forgets? It is a figurative image showing that God...
will protect only what was measured—that is, the Temple and the altar. Everything else will not be under His protection. The proof is that the rest of the city will be trampled. By whom will it be trampled? By the nations. The nations symbolize idolatry. We speak of the pagan world, of the nations. In other words, the rest of the Church will be trampled by idolaters—that is, by idolatry. But idolatry is the abomination. Consequently, this happens continually throughout history. How does it happen? There are Christians, and these Christians may be ordinary faithful or priests,
bishops, or Patriarchs—it makes no difference—who may compromise with the world, with sin, and with idolatry, and in the end they themselves bring abominations into the Church.
Thus, none of these people will be saved. And here is the astonishing thing: none of them will be saved. I have told you, however, that this happens throughout history. In our time it is happening on a vast scale—so vast that it ought to alarm us profoundly. What is it? I will tell you.
It is when we try to unite Marxism with Christianity.
Let whoever wishes accept it, and let whoever wishes accuse me. I lay it before you. Accept it if you wish; reject it if you wish. Whoever links Christianity with Marxism belongs to the rest of the city, the rest of the Church that will not be saved, because this is an abomination. It is an abomination. I lay this before you. Let whoever wishes hear it. And Saint Andrew of Caesarea—or perhaps Arethas; I do not remember exactly which of the two, though I have read the passage to you—goes so far as to say that...
the Antichrist will sit in the Temple of God. The Apostle Paul says this. But in which Temple of God? Saint Cyril, whom we are now interpreting—and when we reach that passage, you will see it—speaks about the Antichrist and says:
“Which Temple of God?”
We are now in the setting of his catechetical lectures, and he points to the Church of the Resurrection, which Saint Helen had built around the year 330. She built the Church of the Resurrection, and now, around the year 350, Saint Cyril is delivering his catechetical lectures inside that very church. He is the bishop of Jerusalem. “In this church here?” he says. “Here, in this church? God forbid!”
Will the Antichrist sit in this church? No, he says. He points instead to the Temple of Solomon, which of course lay in ruins, and says that the Antichrist will rebuild it. The Antichrist will sit in that temple, among the Jews, in order to prove that he is the Messiah. But perhaps, Saint Andrew or Arethas now says—as I explained to you—this temple is not the Temple of Solomon, but the Christian church. Do you remember that I read this to you? It was not very long ago. Could it perhaps be the Christian church? My dear friends, this interpretation astonished me. I could have offered such an interpretation myself, but my interpretation would have carried no authority. You could have said that this was merely how I understood it.
Now, however, I have the authoritative interpretation, although it is presented as a question, not as a certainty: could it perhaps be so? Well, I would tell you that I very much fear it is both. Certainly, in the end, the Antichrist will rebuild the Temple of Solomon. But he has already sat, and still sits, many times in Christian churches. How? Through the heretical Patriarchs of every age and all those who, in any way whatsoever, betray Orthodoxy—whether through their ecumenism, their sentimental distortion of love, their Marxism, or anything else you care to name. They betray it.
They betray the Church in one way or another. All of them serve as forerunners of the Antichrist sitting in the Temple of God. Consequently, that Temple of God ends up becoming an abomination. It is the city trampled by the nations. And the forty-two months are the three and a half years of the Antichrist. Will they not be forty-two months? Yes, under the actual Antichrist they will truly be three and a half years. Three and a half years, exactly as the words say. It is not a symbolic number. It is truly three and a half years.
Yet when it says that the rest of the city will be trampled for forty-two months, it also has a figurative meaning. The forty-two months—the three and a half years—immediately suggest that the nations are bearers of the Antichrist. Forty-two months: they signify the spirit of the Antichrist. The present period is not itself the forty-two months, but the forty-two months point to its meaning. They are the key showing that this is an antichristian spirit, one that will appear throughout the whole history of the Gospel whenever the spirit of the Antichrist settles within the Church and leads Christians astray. In our own time, this is happening to a great extent. I do not wish to explain any further.
I have given you the opportunity to reflect on this more deeply, and I ask you, please, to do so. If you ask me, “Why do we say these things?” the answer is simple: because we have a duty to warn you. Otherwise, why are we sitting here? If our task were to tickle your ears, as the Apostle Paul says, a time will come when people turn to old wives’ tales that tickle the ears—that is, that please the ears. In other words, pleasant things, agreeable things. But take heed, he says, because this is deceit and delusion. If our purpose were to tickle your ears and speak of fine and pleasant things, then, my dear friends, we would have no reason to stay awake here late into the night, nor would you have any reason to come here and...
labor at this hour. You would be at home in your beds, asleep. But we speak the truth. The truth is bitter, yet we are obliged to speak it and to warn others. Saint Cyril, when he speaks at length about the Antichrist in the eighth catechetical lecture, says, “If you have spiritual children, friends, or relatives, warn them at once, so that they may know and not be led astray either by the Antichrist or by the spirit of the Antichrist.” And I tell you again: the spirit of the Antichrist is spread everywhere. Know also that we bear the same responsibility before Christ whether we stand before the actual Antichrist...
or before the spirit of the Antichrist. It is the same—exactly the same thing. Our responsibility is the same. So let us be exceedingly watchful on this point, my dear friends, because circumstances are difficult and grievous. There is a spiritual suffocation in our time. On a worldwide scale, the Antichrist is working to unleash a flood with which to drown the Church! On a worldwide scale, I tell you again, the Antichrist is at work.
“Receive the true Christ, the Son of God, the Only-Begotten. Do not expect Him to come from below, from the earth, but await Him from heaven.” He will not come from the earth—not now. He will come from heaven; it is from there that you must await Him. “He will appear to all, brighter than every flash of lightning and every radiance of light.” This is what I told you earlier: He will shine like lightning, like light, before the eyes of everyone. All flesh will see Him. “He will be escorted by angels.” He will indeed be escorted by the angels. The Lord Himself said so. What did He say? “When the Son of Man comes in His glory, with His holy angels”—with all His holy angels. This is in Matthew, chapter 25. “He will judge the living and the dead and reign in a heavenly kingdom, eternal and without end.” And of course His Kingdom will then be heavenly, eternal, and without end. “Be firmly assured of this as well.” This expression, “be firmly assured for me,” is one Saint Cyril uses very frequently in his catechetical lectures. Be firmly assured for me of this also: that the Kingdom of Christ will be eternal. Why? Because...
“even though some say that Christ’s Kingdom will have an end”—because many claim that there will be an end to the Kingdom of Christ. But since he speaks very briefly about this point here, I will turn to the... To clarify it for you, I will turn to the...
I turn to the Fifth Catechetical Lecture and will read to you exactly what Saint Cyril says about this: “Some have dared to say that the words, ‘When all things are subjected to Him, then the Son Himself will also be subjected to Him who subjected all things to Him,’ mean that the Son will be dissolved into the Father. What then, most impious of all men? You, who are Christ’s creatures, remain, while Christ, through whom both you and all things came into being, passes away? The very claim is blasphemous.” In other words, some dare to interpret in this way the passage from the Apostle Paul’s First Epistle to the Corinthians, chapter 15, verse 28.
When all things have been subjected to Christ, Christ Himself will also be subjected to the Father. And how do they interpret this? They say that Christ will ultimately be dissolved into the Father—that He will cast off His human nature, lose His person as the Son, and be changed into the Father. This is a dreadful heresy. It belongs to those various heresies concerning the Holy Trinity. These Trinitarian heresies supposedly sought to preserve the oneness of the divinity, because they wanted to explain the dogma rationally: How can there be three persons and one essence? So they claimed that God is one essence appearing under three different persons.
In the Old Testament, they say, He appeared as the Father; in the New Testament, as the Son. But when He appears as the Son, the Father no longer exists; and afterward He appears as the Holy Spirit, while the Son disappears. These are fantasies—dreadful heresies. They are all called Trinitarian heresies. Here, then, they claim that the Son will change, that He will be dissolved and become the Father. Saint Cyril answers with a fine argument: “Most impious—most impious of all! You, the creatures of Christ, remain; that is, you are not dissolved. And will He who created you be dissolved?”
Is God playing games? Is God putting on a theatrical performance, appearing now behind one mask and then behind another? “The very claim is blasphemous”—it is blasphemy. This, my dear friends, is what Saint Cyril tells us here in connection with the future Judgment. But since we have only five minutes left, I would rather not begin the next paragraph, which concerns the Holy Spirit and is truly exceptional. Instead, I would like to spend our remaining minutes on a general review of the Incarnation of the Son of God. John Chrysostom says in one of his marvelous homilies:
“What shall I say, or what shall I utter? I am overwhelmed by the wonder.” What can I say, he asks? What can I utter? The wonder leaves me overwhelmed and speechless. And what is this wonder? “The Ancient of Days”—the Son of God, who is the Ancient of Days, just as are the Father and the Holy Spirit—“has become a child.” He became a child. “He who sits upon a throne, high and lifted up, is laid in a manger.” He who sits upon the high and exalted throne—the throne “lifted up” upon which Isaiah saw Him in the Temple, in the sixth chapter of his book, when he says that he saw the glory of God seated upon a throne, high and lifted up—
It was He, Christ, whose glory Isaiah saw then; do not forget this. You know how John the Evangelist puts it: “Isaiah spoke rightly when he saw His glory.” Whose glory? The Evangelist is speaking of Christ, whom the Jews refuse to hear. He says, “Isaiah spoke rightly when he saw His glory.” Whose glory? Christ’s glory, before His Incarnation, of course. He who sits upon the exalted throne “is laid in a manger.” He becomes a child and is placed in a feeding trough for animals. “He who cannot be touched, who is simple and uncompounded—”
“—who breaks the bonds of sin, is Himself bound in swaddling bands, because this is what He wills.” He cannot be touched; no one can lay hold of Him. He is simple and uncompounded, for the essence of God is simple. He who breaks the bonds of sin becomes wrapped and bound in swaddling bands. Swaddling bands are the little cloths in which we wrap a baby. Why does all this happen? Because this is what He wills. This is what He chooses. And why does He will it? Because He loves—because He loves. “Therefore He assumes my body, so that I may enter into His Word”—the Word with a capital W. Indeed.
He enters my body, so that I may enter into His Word. In other words, He becomes man so that I may become god. “And having taken my flesh, He gives me His own Spirit. He takes my flesh so that He may sanctify me; He gives me His Spirit so that He may save me.” He takes my flesh—that is, He must become man; He makes Himself like me in the flesh. This is what “He takes my flesh” means: He does so in order to sanctify me, a human being. He gives me His Spirit in order to save me. “Come, let us celebrate! Come, let us keep the feast!” Come, let us celebrate; come, let us rejoice together. “For strange is the manner of the feast, because wondrous also is the mystery of the birth. For today the ancient bond”—the bond of sin and the curse—“has been broken. The devil has been put to shame. Death has been destroyed. Paradise has been opened. The life of Heaven has been planted upon the earth.” The heavenly commonwealth is planted here upon the earth. Why? “Because God came to earth, and man—”
“—ascended to Heaven.” And all this happened because God came down to earth and man ascended to Heaven. But how will man ascend to Heaven? When Christ returns, my dear friends, to receive us at His Second Coming into His own Kingdom. With all my heart, I wish you a blessed feast!

θα επανέλθει να μας παραλάβει. Δεν λέγει ο Απόστολος Παύλος ότι, όταν θα έρθει, εμείς θα αρπαχθούμε εν νεφέλαις εις απάντησιν του Κυρίου; Ώστε πρέπει με λαχτάρα να περιμένουμε ξανά τον ερχομό του Χριστού. Αλλά, ωστόσο, πρέπει να υπάρχει μία προσοχή στο σημείο αυτό. Λέγει ότι έρχεται πάλιν εξ ουρανών. Ναι, το είπαν οι άγγελοι. Ότι με τον τρόπο που τον είδατε να φεύγει, με τον ίδιο τρόπο θα ξανάρθει. Άρα από πού θα έρθει; Εξ ουρανών. Γιατί υπάρχει αυτός ο τονισμός ότι θα επανέλθει από τους ουρανούς;
Βδέλυγμα της ερημώσεως. Μάλιστα, συγγνώμη, το είχα γραμμένο, το είχα γραμμένο. Το ξέρω να σας το πω. Είναι Ματθαίος 24, 15: «Όταν ουν ίδητε το βδέλυγμα της ερημώσεως, το ρηθέν διά Δανιήλ του προφήτου, εστός εν τόπω αγίω». Δηλαδή, αυτό το βδέλυγμα να στέκεται, να υφίσταται, να υπάρχει εις τόπον άγιον. «Ο αναγινώσκων νοείτω». Αυτός που διαβάζει ας καταλάβει. «Τότε οι εν τη Ιουδαία φευγέτωσαν επί τα όρη» κ.λπ., κ.λπ. Λοιπόν, ποιος είναι ο τόπος ο άγιος καταρχάς; Ήταν το Ιερόν. Ήταν ο Ναός του Σολομώντος. Το Ιερόν. Τι θα πει τώρα ερήμωσις;
Παλαιά Διαθήκη εμφανίστηκε ως Πατήρ, στην Καινή Διαθήκη ως Υιός, αλλά όταν εμφανίζεται ως Υιός δεν υπάρχει ο Πατήρ, και μετά εμφανίζεται ως Πνεύμα Άγιον και εξαφανίζεται ο Υιός. Λέγει παραμύθια. Λέγει αιρέσεις φοβερές. Όλες αυτές λέγονται τριαδολογικές αιρέσεις. Και λέει εδώ ότι ο Υιός θα μεταπέσει, θα αναλυθεί και θα μεταπέσει σε Πατέρα. Και λέει εδώ ένα ωραίο επιχείρημα: «Ανοσιότατοι, ω ανοσιότατοι πάντων». Εσείς που είσαστε οι πιο ανόσιοι από όλους. Εσείς, τα κτίσματα του Χριστού, μένετε, δηλαδή δεν διαλύεστε. Εκείνος που σας εδημιούργησε θα διαλυθεί;
