Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem presents Christ’s Ascension as the completion of His patient suffering, death, Resurrection, and redemption of humanity. Christ’s continuing authority is manifested in His worldwide worship and in the power of His name over demons, confirming that He is risen, ascended, and alive. Christians should make the sign of the Cross openly, correctly, reverently, and consciously, remembering Christ’s sacrifice, love, and saving work.

After the subject of the Cross, the Burial, and the Resurrection of the Lord, which Saint Cyril discusses in his fourth catechetical lecture, we come to the subject of the Ascension of the Lord. For now, of course, he gives only the briefest summary, since later he will explain these things at length—that is, he will instruct us fully and in detail. So for the moment, he gives us just a few points, so that we may gain an overall picture. First, then, concerning the Ascension: “Having completed the path of patient endurance, and having redeemed mankind from their sins, Jesus...”
“...returned to the heavens, as a cloud received Him.” Thank you.
He says that, after Jesus had completed the path of patient endurance and redeemed mankind from their sins, He rose from the dead and ascended again into the heavens, as a cloud received Him. Do you like that phrase, that Jesus “completed the path of patient endurance”? Do you like it? Here is a point related to what we were saying earlier, during the question period: whether Christianity can be made to fit the task of solving the social problem.
Our Teacher completed the path of patient endurance. Tell me, can a politician stand up and say, “Listen, my dear fellow citizens: patiently endure”? Tell me. That does not fit. We want food, and we want it now. We want whatever it is we want. That is why we go on strike, why we do this, and why we do that. Listen, I am not saying whether this is good or bad. That does not concern me here; I am not examining it. What I am examining is that this cannot flow from the Gospel. How can it? Our Teacher is the Lord of patient endurance. This is very important.
His disciples must be people of patient endurance. But what kind of endurance, and in what circumstances? In every hardship of this present life. The Lord hungered, thirsted, grew weary, and sweated. He passed through trials and persecutions. Time and again, the Jews sought to stone the Lord. He came to the Cross; He came to the Garden of Gethsemane; He endured His disciple’s betrayal; He ascended the Cross; and He died upon the Cross. In other words, He completed the path of patient endurance. This is the path of patient endurance. Our own path, my dear friends, cannot be different or brighter. It cannot be. It simply cannot, because, as I tell you, these are things that...
...do not fit together; they do not fit. And after the Lord had completed the path of patient endurance, he says, He ascended again into heaven. If we were to represent this in a diagram, we would see God—for God is everywhere present. Yet, in order to trace a course through creation, He must clothe Himself in something belonging to His creation; and in this case, He clothes Himself in human nature. He descends into the depths of His creation and passes through the earth, just as a comet approaches...
...circles the sun, and then travels far away again. In the same way, the Lord descended into the depths of His creation. Having assumed human nature, He came to earth, completed this path of patient endurance, and departed again. There is only one difference: He did not depart as He had come. He departed enriched. He descended as God and assumed human nature—and He took that human nature from here, from the earth. He united it to Himself and raised it back into heaven. For when He came from heaven—though this expression “came” is very relative, because God is not here or there, but is everywhere present; “He was manifested” would be more exact, though we speak in this way and say, “He came from heaven”—when He returned to heaven, He returned bearing human nature...
...enriched by it. This event is called the Ascension. We celebrate it, and it is a great feast: the Feast of the Ascension. I am sorry, my dear friends, that in our Church calendar we pay so little attention to the Feast of the Ascension. Sadly, it is even a working day. It should not be. We ought to celebrate it just as we celebrate the Nativity, because we must celebrate the... What exactly? Just as Christ, the Son of God, entered into His creation—and this is what we celebrate at the Nativity—so now He goes forth from it. Indeed, the Feast of the Ascension is even greater. Of course, the Feast of the Nativity is its necessary foundation. But why is the Feast of the Ascension greater? Because through it we learn that He took our human nature out of this...
...created order and led it into the Kingdom of God. This is immeasurably great. It is uniquely great that human nature has entered the Kingdom of God. Do you not think this is an immense event? Yet we do not truly celebrate it, since the day of the Ascension is not even a public holiday. In the end, because we do not set aside such great feast days—or because, on these great feasts, their meaning is not explained through fitting sermons, for unfortunately our sermons have become full of festivity and rhetoric rather than offering catechetical instruction to our people—all these great events escape our notice...
...and as a result, we have lost our sense of direction. The fruit of this loss of direction is everything strange that has been served up through the centuries and in our own time: our desire to deviate this way and that, to debate one thing and then another, because we do not know the Gospel, because we do not know the course of Christ’s life upon earth. What is the Gospel? It is the course of Christ’s life upon earth. That is the Gospel. What does the Gospel relate? How the Son of God was born as man, what He did, and how He departed. That is the Gospel. This is why John Chrysostom rightly says that ignorance of the Scriptures...
“...has brought in the corruption of heresies and a depraved way of life; it has turned everything upside down.” It has thrown everything into confusion and overturned it all, making what was above into what is below, and what was below into what is above. In other words, complete upheaval. And what causes it? Ignorance of the Scriptures—ignorance. It is tragic. That is why we must do everything we can to help our people understand at least some of these things. But let me tell you something else. Do you realize that you listen passively, as though you were merely auditing a class—not only here at this gathering, but everywhere? If children went to school simply to sit in, without taking notes, without notebooks, pencils, or books, tell me, would they ever learn to read and write?
Whenever we attend seminars, training courses, schools, or anything else, wherever we go, we apply ourselves, because all these things last for only a limited time. We say, “Our education will last from this point to that point—one year, five years, or however long. We will work; we will study.” But in Christianity, we listen for years and years—we ought to listen—yet we do not learn. Why? Because we listen passively, as though merely auditing a class. Do you know that, when catechetical lectures like these were completed, the bishop would question the catechumens about what they had learned? In other words, there were straightforward written or oral examinations. “You, tell me what it means that God is Triune. And you, tell me about the Holy Spirit.”
Did you know this? And if someone could not answer, he was not baptized; he was referred to the next examination period, so to speak. His Baptism might then take place at the coming feast of Theophany. That is why the feast is called “the Feast of Lights.” As I was saying, people were baptized for the Feast of Theophany. During that night, as the dawn of the Feast of Theophany—the Feast of the Baptism of Christ—approached, the new catechumens were baptized. “Ah, you do not know these things? You did not study? You were not attentive? Then we will wait until Pascha.” And if you had still not learned them by then, you would wait longer, until Pentecost. Why, my dear friends, should we not study—and do so in an organized and systematic way? Why not?
It would be good—whatever your level of education may be, from primary school to university, it makes no difference—if we had a board here and, in a very simple way, gave an examination. Let me tell you what the Jehovah’s Witnesses do. When they publish their books and magazines—for example, The Watchtower—they place numbers at various points within the text: one, two, three, four, five. Then, at the bottom of the page, perhaps in a notes section, they ask one question for number one, another for number two, and so on. In other words, for each numbered section of the text, they ask you a corresponding question...
...which forces you to look back at the text in order to answer it. And that is how you learn. I saw years ago that the Jehovah’s Witnesses use this method, and I assure you, I appreciated it. This is why, after attending their heretical study groups for only a short time, Jehovah’s Witnesses become remarkably proficient. Then they go here and there, acting as though they know everything, because they have been driven to learn by this method. We too, then, must learn, ladies and gentlemen, my dear friends. I return to the text: “Angels stood beside Him as He ascended, while the Apostles beheld Him.”
As Jesus ascended, angels stood beside Him, and the Apostles watched.
At this point, where it says that angels stood by while the Lord was being taken up, you may object that Holy Scripture tells us there were no angels present except for two. And those two did not stand beside Him during Christ’s Ascension. Rather, after the Lord had been taken up into heaven, while the disciples’ eyes remained fixed upon the sky, those two angels drew their attention away from heaven and said to them, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking at Jesus as He ascends into heaven?” They then explained that He would return in the same manner in which they had seen Him ascend.
Therefore, do not wait here now; you are laboring in vain if you keep watching in the hope that He may immediately return. Not now. He will return at the proper time, when the appointed hour comes. For now, go back to your homes. Go and teach the Gospel throughout the whole world. That is what they meant. Thus, there were only two angels, and they were not accompanying the Lord, but explaining His Ascension to the disciples. Where, then, were the other angels? My dear friends, historically, angels are not mentioned as part of the event because they were indeed invisible. But they were there. So I ask: in the parable the Lord tells us of the Rich Man and Lazarus, when Lazarus dies and angels accompany his soul into Paradise...
...John Chrysostom comments on this: “Why angels? Is not one angel enough to guide the soul to the place appointed for it?” What does this mean? John Chrysostom answers, “It was precisely because his soul was devout.” The angels accompany Lazarus’s soul as an honor. The parable says this plainly. Christ Himself told it: “Angels,” He says, took his soul and carried it to its destination, into the bosom of Abraham. If, then, angels accompany the soul of a human being as an honor, would angels not also be present as an honor to receive Jesus as He was taken up—He who is Himself the Creator of the angels—into the heavens?
Without question. We have a prophecy telling us that angels were present when the Lord ascended, and that as He went up, a dialogue took place among them: “Who is this who ascends?” “It is He,” comes the answer, “whose garments are stained red.” It is beautiful, truly astonishing. The red means that He is the One who suffered martyrdom, and so forth. But you may ask, “Why, then, were they not visible?” For the very simple reason that, although angels were present at Christ’s Ascension, they remained invisible, so that Jesus alone would be seen. Had the angels been visible, the disciples’ attention would have been drawn away from the Lord, the principal object of their vision, and directed toward the angels. To understand this, imagine a very important painting placed within a magnificent frame. When viewers first see it, their eyes will, for a moment, be drawn away from the painting’s main subject and toward the frame. That is only natural. This is why such works are always given a very simple background or frame.
It is the same in museums. At the Louvre, when they display the statue of Aphrodite, or at the Archaeological Museum of Olympia, when they display Praxiteles’ statue of Hermes, there is only a curtain behind it—simply a curtain—and no other exhibit in that space, so that the viewer’s eyes will not fall on anything else. In the same way, all the disciples’ attention had to be fixed on Jesus Christ. That is why the angels were not visible. They were there, but the Apostles were watching.
“They were watching” means that they became witnesses. They were not merely looking. This is important: they became witnesses. Witnesses to what? Just as they became witnesses of Christ’s Resurrection, so now they also became witnesses of Christ’s Ascension. You see, no event concerning Christ and our salvation took place in secret, at night, or in a manner that could not be verified by many eyewitnesses. This is important. “But if anyone disbelieves what has been said, let him believe on the evidence of the power he sees.”
“When kings die, their power dies with them; but Christ, though crucified, is worshipped throughout the whole world. We proclaim the Crucified One, and even now the demons tremble. Many have been crucified through the ages, but when has invoking the name of any other crucified man ever driven demons away?” And if one of you, disbelieving what we say, claims that He could never have ascended into heaven—that going up into heaven is a strange thing—then let him believe what I am about to tell him, what he can see. Let him believe not merely what I tell him, but what he sees. And what does he see?
Kings, he says, passed through this world and died, and their power died with them. Christ, however, was crucified and died; and even if you refuse to believe anything else, you can see that He is worshipped throughout the whole world. But you may say, “Very well, the world worships Him, yet He might still have no power.” And yet, whose name do I utter that makes the demons tremble? If I utter the name of some king, or of another crucified man or criminal, do the demons suffer anything at all?
Why, then, are the demons thrown into confusion when we speak the name of Jesus Christ? They tremble and vanish. Would they have anything to fear from a dead man who had neither risen nor ascended into heaven? What does it mean, then, that the demons tremble and flee? It means that He has risen, has ascended, is alive, and is in heaven. That is why the demons tremble before Jesus Christ. This is a beautiful line of reasoning. I will say it once more: You do not believe what we tell you? Believe what you see. And what you see is the power of Jesus Christ. My dear friends, we could say this today and in every age. In every age. When, for example, someone says, “I do not believe in Jesus Christ,” then, when you see
the name of Jesus Christ being invoked and the demons taking flight, what can you say? What other name can you invoke and make the demons flee? No other name. There is no other name beneath heaven or under the sun which, when invoked, makes the demons vanish. What, then, does this mean? The Lord God lives: He has risen and ascended into heaven. “Therefore, let us not be ashamed of the Cross of Christ.” My dear friends, I would like us to pay close attention to this passage. It is very interesting and has great practical value. “Therefore, let us not be ashamed of the Cross of Christ. Even if another person conceals it, you must openly”
“seal your forehead with it, so that the demons, seeing this royal sign, may flee far away in trembling. Make this sign when eating, drinking, sitting down, lying down, rising, speaking, and walking—in short, in everything you do. For He who was crucified here is now above in heaven.”
So he says: Let us not be ashamed of the Cross of Christ. Even if someone else conceals the Cross of Christ, you must openly seal your forehead with the Cross, so that the demons, seeing this royal sign, may take flight. Make this sign whether you are eating or drinking, sitting down or going to bed, rising from bed, speaking or walking—in short, in everything you do.
This is a beautiful passage. Let us examine it a little more closely.
Therefore, do not be ashamed of the Cross of Christ. A little later he will tell us: “For if He who was crucified and buried had remained in the tomb, we would have reason to be ashamed. But now He who was crucified here on Golgotha has ascended into heaven from the Mount of Olives to the east.” If, he says, the One who was crucified and buried had remained in the tomb, then you would have reason to be ashamed, because the One in whom you believed as God would have remained there, sealed within the tomb. But He did not remain in the tomb; He rose. Therefore, the Cross is no longer an instrument of which you might be ashamed.
It is something in which you may glory. Does not the Apostle Paul himself say, “My glory is in the Cross of Christ”? Thus: “Therefore, let us not be ashamed of the Cross of Christ.” Let us not be ashamed of the Cross of Christ. If someone truly wishes to show his faith in the Cross of Christ, holding to Saint Cyril’s beautiful teaching that the tomb was emptied—that my God was crucified, but also rose—then he must show this faith in every way. How? By making the sign of the Cross. “Even if another,” he says, “conceals the sign of the Cross, you must openly seal your forehead with it.”
Seal yourself openly—openly. My dear friends, let us truly not be ashamed to make the sign of the Cross. To refrain from doing so is cowardice, a cowardice by which we conceal our faith in Jesus Christ. It means that this faith has already grown weak within us. For someone who has a living faith in Jesus Christ and loves Him does not hide. Please forgive the example, but tell me: Are young people in love ashamed to be seen in public with the one they love? They pay no attention to anyone. Why are they not ashamed? Because they believe in what they have chosen and in what they are doing. They believe in it. They love it and desire it.
Why, then, should we be ashamed to make the sign of the Cross? Why? After all, is it something shameful or unclean, something of which we truly ought to be ashamed? The Cross has now been honored for two thousand years. This is not something that we could regard as it was in Saint Cyril’s time,
within a Jewish environment, where those Jews who remained in unbelief continually mocked the Christians. We do not live in that environment today, where the Cross of Christ is openly reviled. Why, then, should we be ashamed? We must not be ashamed. We must make the sign of the Cross with boldness. Now pay attention to what he says here.
He is referring to the sign of the Cross. This shows that the sign of the Cross was already well known by the middle of the fourth century. Do you know why I mention this? Because Protestants are known to refuse to make the sign of the Cross. They do not make it because they regard it as a later practice of the Church. But here we have very early testimony—extremely early. And if you also consider the archaeological evidence, in a small servant’s room
in Pompeii, which was destroyed by Vesuvius in the first century after Christ, a half-burned cross was found. The sign of the Cross is a concise way of confessing the faith. Did you hear how I put that? It is a concise confession of faith. In other words, through this brief act we show what we believe. That is why we always place a cross on graves. Why? To show that the person buried there is a Christian. On a building such as a church, we place the Precious Cross above it to show that this is a church, and so forth.
But look at another word he uses: “You must openly seal your forehead with it.”
You seal yourself upon the forehead. Of course, when he says “upon the forehead,” he means the starting point of the Cross, which must begin at the forehead. Here I would like to say that, through frequent use, we have become careless and no longer make the sign of the Precious Cross correctly. Many people make its second stroke somewhere down here, near the stomach. They begin here, make the vertical stroke, and then the horizontal one; but instead of bringing their hand up here, high across the shoulders, they make it down here. This is unseemly. I have noticed it in quite a few people. It is not good. My dear friends, let us take care to make the sign of the Precious Cross correctly—correctly.
We must do it reverently, not mechanically. You know, we may put a cross in our car and still have an accident, or wear a cross here upon our chest and still have an accident. Did the Precious Cross fail to protect us? No. It is because we place it in our car or wear it upon ourselves mechanically. It must be done with conscious understanding. When I make the sign of the Cross and know what I am doing, I will pause for a moment and make it reverently, because reverence gives me the space to understand what I am doing. Then nothing can truly harm me, because as I make the sign of the Cross, there comes swiftly into my heart
Christ’s entire journey upon the earth: His sacrifice, His self-offering, His love, and my salvation. All these things come to mind when I make the sign of the Cross correctly and reverently. Now, did you notice that word, that verb, “seal yourself”? Why does he say “seal yourself” rather than simply “make it”? He could have said, “Make the sign of the Cross openly upon your forehead.” Instead, he uses the word “seal.” This verb is also used very often in our liturgical practice. We say, “The priest seals the Holy Gifts.” He seals them. To seal means, first of all, to make the sign of the Cross over this object, whatever it may be. I make the Cross over it. I seal it. I place the seal upon it.
The seal of the Precious Cross. As he says here, you are to make the sign openly, placing the Precious Cross upon your forehead. We now come to the primary meaning of the word “seal”: to place a seal upon something. What does “seal” mean? Here, my dear friends, it has many meanings. First of all, I confirm what I believe. I confirm my faith, because when a seal is placed on a document, it authenticates that document. Then, when we say, “I seal,” it means that I close something and allow nothing else to enter it. We say, “I sealed the box.” What does that mean? It means that I closed it
so that no one could open it. Seals were placed upon Christ’s tomb. What does “seal” mean here? They sealed, closed, and secured the tomb. Thus, when I make the sign of the Cross, I seal myself—in this latter sense, I secure and protect myself. Notice this: I protect myself. Indeed, Saint Cyril often uses the command, “Secure yourself.” He says this on other occasions. Here, then, “I seal” also means “I secure and protect.” “So that the demons, seeing the royal sign...” This royal sign causes them to...
flee far away in trembling. To flee far away in trembling. Notice that here he calls it a sign. I will not dwell further on the meaning of “sign,” although it is exceedingly rich. I will only remind you of the Apocalypse, where it says, “They will see the sign of the Son of Man.” I also remind you of the ninth chapter of Ezekiel. In the vision he sees there, a sign was placed upon the foreheads of those who grieved and groaned over all the shameful, filthy, and deceitful things being done within Jerusalem, and so forth. This is part of the meaning of the sign.
The meaning of “sign” is exceedingly rich and broad. The Hebrew text says “tav,” while the Septuagint translation of Ezekiel says “sign.” The Seventy translated it very correctly with the word “sign.” We might say that, by divine inspiration, they added “sign” to the prototype, the original text before them. They did so by divine inspiration, because “sign” conveys something beyond simply saying the letter tav. It carries something more. Miracles are also called signs. I mention only these things so that you may see the connection and the significance of the word “sign.” We will not analyze it any further.
He says, “Make this sign.” What is meant by “this sign”? Make it while eating and drinking. Here he wants to tell us that we must make the sign of the Cross everywhere: “Simply, in everything.” In general, in every activity. Which activities does he mean? When we eat and when we drink. This means that we should pray at the table. Our prayer at mealtime should begin the meal and conclude it. And when we pray, we make the sign of the Cross. This is very important. I remember my father—and of course this custom is well known, and I have told you about it before. It was very widespread, though now all these things are gradually disappearing.
He would take the loaf of bread, turn it upside down in his lap, take the knife, and with its tip make three marks—three crosses—on the underside. In other words, he would sign it with the Cross.
People make the sign of the Cross over the glass, signing it three times before drinking from it; or they make the sign of the Cross over themselves and then drink the water. Over coffee as well—over everything. Whatever we are about to drink, he says here, and naturally whatever we eat.
Whatever we drink—even lemonade, I would say—anything at all, everywhere. Whatever we drink: “while drinking,” make the sign of the Cross. “While sitting, lying down, rising, speaking, and walking.” While sitting or lying down. When you sit down at any given moment, make the sign of the Cross. We sit down to read Holy Scripture.
We read something very important in Holy Scripture, or perhaps in some other spiritual book, and we make the sign of the Cross. Or a temptation comes, and we make the sign of the Cross. Or we feel the need to glorify God, and we make the sign of the Cross. You have often noticed this in conversation. Such customs now survive in our lives almost as remnants, and we find ourselves rediscovering them. You see, while we are talking, if we mention something strange or something from which we wish to be protected, we say, “May God protect me,” and make the sign of the Cross. This is a remnant from the early Christians, who made the sign of the Cross in everything. Even while speaking—he says, “speaking,” as well as “sitting” and “walking.” And “lying down” means when you go to sleep.
“Rising,” when you are about to get up. I spoke of this many years ago, and I was so glad to learn that there are people who heard it and have practiced it ever since. It is this: the moment we open our eyes, my dear friends, while we are still lying in bed, and see the daylight—or turn on the electric light, since dawn may not yet have come; it makes no difference—we should say, “Glory to You who have shown us the light,” and make the sign of the Precious Cross. It is a beautiful thing. This sign of the Precious Cross is separate from one’s regular prayer. The person will say those prayers shortly afterward; that makes no difference. As one gets up, one should say these one or two verses of praise and make the sign of the Cross, just as one should also do when going to sleep.
At the moment you lie down—apart from your regular prayers, which you have already finished before going to bed—make the sign of the Cross once again, so that everywhere and at all times we may be protected by the presence of the Precious Cross, or rather by Him who was crucified upon the Cross. I have often spoken about doing this before driving, and I ask you to observe it. This too is a form of protection, in keeping with the words “secure yourself” and “seal yourself.” If you do not want to have an accident—or if God shows you that He is protecting you by allowing only a near accident, so that you may say, “God protected me”—then make the sign of the Cross before leaving your home.
Apart from your morning and evening prayers, make three prostrations, venerate the icons of Christ and the Most Holy Theotokos, and say simply, “My Christ, protect me, my passengers, and the car.” Nothing elaborate—just that. When you return home, your first task should be to go straight away and make three prostrations again, saying, “My Christ, thank You for protecting me. Most Holy Theotokos, thank you for protecting me, my passengers, and the car.” How often does that box we call a car become the coffin of an entire family! Is that not terrible? This is how we can pray in such circumstances.
We place our hope for protection in God’s hands. Always hold fast to the hope and faith that God will protect you. And I say again, if something does happen, you will say, “God protected us by a hair’s breadth.” We wear a cross here, hanging upon our chest. I would tell you that it is the finest safeguard. You often ask what kind of protective object you should wear. What other safeguard do we have but the Precious Cross, whatever material it may be made from? Would you like it to be wooden? If you have no money, use one made of wood or iron. Would you like it to be silver? Let it be silver. Would you like it to be gold? Wear a gold one. The material does not matter. If we make a cross of gold, it means that we are showing honor to the Precious Cross.
That is one way to honor it. Yet the substance of the material matters far less than this sign itself and a deep understanding of what it is—what the Precious Cross truly is. For this reason, we must know at least the basic theology of the Precious Cross. Do you know what it means when someone wears a cross? He wears the Cross. Do you understand? He wears the Cross; that is, he wears the Gospel of the Cross. This is what “I wear the Cross” means: I wear the Gospel of the Cross. And when I make the sign of the Cross, do you know what that means? I crucify my passions. The Apostle Paul says this. I crucify my sinful flesh.
Thus, to make the sign of the Cross means that I put myself to death. For what is the Cross? An instrument of death. I put myself to death with respect to my passions and everything else of that kind. But when I make the sign of the Precious Cross in this way, I am kept from danger. We also make the sign of the Cross when we are about to bathe. This too is a beautiful custom and a remnant of the past, whether we are bathing at home or swimming in the sea. From time to time, you may see a swimmer preparing to enter the sea and making the sign of the Precious Cross. Swimmers in earlier times did two things. I do not know what happens now; perhaps only one is still done, or perhaps not even that. They would sprinkle themselves with a little water and enter the sea gradually.
Slowly. They would walk into the sea little by little, taking water from its surface and sprinkling it over themselves. You understand what this means. What swimmers preparing to enter the water do means that I gradually become accustomed to a new temperature, and this is very valuable. These are precautions, but so too is the sign of the Precious Cross, so that no accident may befall us in the sea. The sea is wild. You do not know what lies within it, and it is dangerous. But even when entering the bathroom at home to bathe, we should make the sign of the Cross. Allow me to say something plainly, so that we may shed light into every little corner. Especially for younger people, the bathroom can become a setting and a snare for sin. If someone believes he may sin there, it would be better not to bathe. Better not to—it does not matter. Better to smell of perspiration and the like
than to carry the stench of sin. That is preferable. And even if someone does not feel that he is likely to fall into temptation, at least at that moment, the bathroom is still a snare, because demons lurk in such places. Perhaps this surprises you. Yet the Euchologion says in the exorcisms, “O demon, you who hide in this place and that place, and in the baths”—yes, in the baths as well. Do not be surprised by this at all. We must therefore pray. At times, if someone feels weakness within himself, he may need to pray from the depths of his heart: “My Christ, I beseech You, I am going to bathe.
Protect me from committing any sin while I am there.” After saying this prayer, he should also make the sign of the Cross, because he must be delivered from a moral and spiritual danger. But there may also be the danger of physically slipping. Perhaps soap has fallen on the floor, and we slip in the bathtub or shower and injure ourselves badly. Have only a few people died in their bathrooms? No, not a few. Therefore, everywhere and at all times, we must secure ourselves through prayer and faith in the Crucified One, thus confessing our faith by making the sign of the Cross.
As he closes this chapter, Saint Cyril says: “For from here He descended into Hades...” Forgive me; the passage first says that “from the Mount of Olives, which lies toward the east, He ascended into heaven.” “From us—for from here He descended into Hades and then rose again to us; and from us He ascended once more into heaven,” while the Father addressed Him, saying, “Sit at My right hand, until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.” You see what I told you at the beginning of the chapter about the Ascension: it is Christ’s final act.
It completes His descent, when He plunged into His creation, came to earth, and then ascended again into heaven, taking His human nature up with Him. Now listen to how Saint Cyril expresses this in one concise phrase. From here, he says, from the Mount of Olives, east of the Mount of Olives, “for from here He descended into Hades.” No, forgive me, forgive me. “From here” means from the place where we are now giving these catechetical lectures. They were inside the Church of the Resurrection, and the Church of the Resurrection, as you know, was built over Golgotha. The Church of the Resurrection was built where the Precious Cross was found, and it remains in Jerusalem to this day. Golgotha is there. Thus, “from here”—because “from here He descended into Hades.” From here, he says, from this very place.
At this very place Christ died and descended into Hades. Then He rose again and returned to us; “and having risen again to us, He departed from us and ascended once more into heaven.” He came down from heaven to earth, from earth to Hades, from Hades back to earth, and from earth to heaven. What a beautiful pattern this is. And now let us consider something else.
From where did He ascend into heaven? “From the place east of the Mount of Olives, He ascended into heaven.” But Luke the Evangelist says that He led them out as far as Bethany. The words “as far as” do not mean that they reached Bethany itself, but that they were on the road leading to Bethany.
It was only a short distance outside Jerusalem, as tradition has preserved for us and as Saint Cyril tells us: east of the Mount of Olives. As you know, the Mount of Olives lies east of Jerusalem, and beyond it—farther east—is Bethany. It was from there that Christ was taken up in the Ascension. Now pay attention to something here.
There is an astonishing realism in this. Years ago, a sculpture was discovered at the Oracle of Delphi, and you can still see it there in the Delphi Archaeological Museum. It is shaped like a basket and bears carved relief decoration. It was said to mark the navel of the earth—the belly button, as ordinary people would say. The navel, our belly button, is the center of the body.
Whenever we use the word “navel” figuratively, it always refers to something that is the center. The Oracle of Delphi—the sanctuary of Apollo—was believed to be the navel of the earth. To make this idea more vivid, so to speak, they made that sculpture and said, “Here is the navel of the earth.” My beloved, the navel of the earth was not at Delphi. And when people even try to revive the Delphic festivals—something Sikelianos began—
that is not merely foolish, but also profane and sinful. The navel of the earth is where the feet of Christ trod: where He was born, where He was crucified, and where He ascended into heaven. People went there to encounter these places with their own senses. Do you understand what it means when someone tells you, “The feet of Christ, of God who became man, trod upon this very ground”? This is the navel of the earth. When we speak of the navel, we mean the center of universal concern. The whole world, the entire earth, in every age, must turn its eyes toward that place, where the feet of the incarnate Son of God trod. That is where all eyes must turn. This is the navel of the earth.
From there our salvation flows. Our salvation flows from there because Christ died, rose from the dead, ascended into heaven, and will come again. For the next section that Saint Cyril will explain to us is “On the Judgment to Come.” That is all for this evening, my beloved.

τη λύμη των αιρέσεων έχει εισαγάγει και τον βίον τον διεφθαρμένον· όλα. Και τα άνω κάτω πεποίηκε. Όλα τα έχει ανακατέψει και έχει αναποδογυρίσει τα πάντα, και τα πάνω τα έκανε κάτω και τα κάτω τα έκανε απάνω. Δηλαδή ανατροπή. Τι; Η άγνοια των Γραφών, η άγνοια. Είναι θλιβερό. Γι’ αυτό θα πρέπει με κάθε τρόπο να βοηθούμε τον λαό μας να καταλάβει μερικά πράγματα. Αλλά θα σας πω και κάτι. Το ξέρετε ότι ακούτε ακαδημαϊκά, όχι εδώ μόνο, στη σύναξη αυτή, παντού; Αν πήγαιναν τα παιδιά ακαδημαϊκά στο σχολείο, χωρίς να κρατούν σημειώσεις, τετράδιο, μολύβια, βιβλία, πέστε μου, θα μάθαιναν ποτέ γράμματα;
Ξέρετε αυτό; Και αν κανείς δεν εγνώριζε να απαντήσει, δεν εβαπτίζετο· παρεπέμπετο στην άλλη εξεταστική περίοδο, θα το πω έτσι. Δηλαδή, προσεχώς των Θεοφανίων να γίνει η βάπτιση. Γι’ αυτό και λέγεται η εορτή «τα Φώτα». Γι’ αυτό, έλεγα, εβαπτίζοντο προς την εορτή των Θεοφανίων. Το βράδυ εκείνο, ξημέρωμα προς την εορτή των Θεοφανίων, της Βαπτίσεως, βαπτίζονται οι νέοι κατηχούμενοι. Α, δεν τα ξέρεις, δεν διάβασες, δεν πρόσεξες; Λοιπόν, πάμε για το Πάσχα. Και αν δεν τα έχεις μάθει και τότε, πάμε για παρακάτω, πάμε για την Πεντηκοστή. Γιατί, αγαπητοί μου, να μη μελετούμε; Και μάλιστα οργανωμένα και συστηματικά. Γιατί;
πάνω σε αυτό ο Ιερός Χρυσόστομος: «Γιατί άγγελοι; Ένας άγγελος δεν είναι αρκετός διά να καθοδηγήσει την ψυχήν εις τον οικείον της τόπον;» Τι σημαίνει; Και απαντάει ο Ιερός Χρυσόστομος: «Επειδή ακριβώς ήτο ευλαβής ψυχή». Τιμητικά συνοδεύουν την ψυχή του Λαζάρου άγγελοι. Σαφώς το λέει η παραβολή. Την είπε ο Χριστός και «άγγελοι», λέγει, επήραν την ψυχή του, την οδήγησαν εκεί που την οδήγησαν, στους κόλπους του Αβραάμ. Εάν, λοιπόν, μία ψυχή ενός ανθρώπου συνοδεύουν άγγελοι τιμητικώς, τον Ιησούν αναλαμβανόμενον, που είναι αυτός ο δημιουργός των αγγέλων, δεν θα ήσαν άγγελοι τιμητικώς ευρισκόμενοι να τον υποδεχθούν στους ουρανούς;
Πάντες οι βασιλείς τελευτώντες, συναποσβέννυσι τῇ ζωῇ καὶ τὴν δύναμιν· Χριστός δε σταυρωθείς, υπό πάσης προσκυνείται της οικουμένης. Τον εσταυρωμένον καταγγέλλομεν και τρέμουσι νυν δαίμονες. Πολλοί κατά χρόνους εσταυρώθησαν, αλλά ποίου σταυρωθέντος επίκλησις ετέρου ποτέ τους δαίμονας απήλασεν; Και αν λέγει κάποιος από εσάς, απιστών σε αυτά που λέμε, ότι είναι δυνατόν ποτέ να ανελήφθη στους ουρανούς — περίεργο πράγμα, να πήγε στους ουρανούς — ε, λοιπόν, ας πιστεύει σε αυτά που θα του πω τώρα, σε αυτά που βλέπει. Όχι σε εκείνα που του λέω, αλλά σε εκείνα που βλέπει. Τι βλέπει;
Βασιλιάδες, λέει, πέρασαν από τη γη αυτή και πέθαναν, και μαζί με αυτούς έσβησε και η δύναμή τους. Ο Χριστός, όμως, όταν σταυρώθηκε και πέθανε, αν δεν θες να πιστέψεις τίποτε άλλο, βλέπεις να προσκυνείται υπό ολοκλήρου της οικουμένης. Αλλά, λες, ωραία, προσκυνείται από την οικουμένη. Μπορούσε να προσκυνείται χωρίς, όμως, να έχει κάποια δύναμη. Και όμως, ποιανού όνομα αναφέρω και τρέμουν οι δαίμονες; Αν, υποτεθεί, οποιουδήποτε βασιλιά ή σταυρωμένου ή εγκληματία, δεν ξέρω, αναφέρω το όνομα, οι δαίμονες έχουν τίποτα να πάθουν;
