Summary

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem teaches that Jesus Christ was truly crucified on Golgotha for humanity’s sins, defeating Satan and canceling the ancient debt of sin. Arianism denies Christ’s divinity, while Monophysitism and its related forms diminish His humanity; both errors undermine the salvation accomplished by the God-man. Golgotha, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the True Cross, holy relics, and the Church’s material sacraments testify to the historical Incarnation, Crucifixion, burial, and sanctification of creation.

My dear friends, I continue with Saint Cyril’s Fourth Catechetical Lecture, which contains a very concise exposition of the ten doctrines, as we have said before. Its purpose is to help us gain a general overview of his entire dogmatic teaching, which he will examine in detail in the catechetical lectures that follow. Having considered the doctrine concerning God, the doctrine concerning Christ, and His birth from the Virgin, I now come to the subject of the Cross: “Thus He was truly crucified for our sins.”

“Even if you wished to deny it, the very place you see refutes you: this blessed Golgotha, where we are now assembled because of Him who was crucified here. And by now the whole inhabited world has been filled, piece by piece, with the wood of the Cross. He was crucified not for sins of His own, but so that we might be freed from our sins. At that time He was despised by men and struck as a man, but creation acknowledged Him to be God. For when the sun saw its Master being dishonored, it failed and trembled, unable to endure the sight.”

In a very brief way, Saint Cyril refers to the Lord’s sacrifice on the Cross and says, “Thus He was truly crucified for our sins.” The purpose of His Crucifixion was to save us from our sins, to crush Satan there, and, so to speak, to pay the ancient debt—

and, as the Apostle Paul says, there to tear up the written record against us—the certificate of debt, that is. We might call it the bond we owed, or, if you prefer, the promissory note. How else can I put it? He tore it up upon the Cross. But what I would like to dwell on briefly is the word “truly.”

Long before Saint Cyril—in fact, from the beginning of the second century, or rather from the end of the first—Saint Ignatius of Antioch confronted these heretics. In almost every letter he sent while being taken under military guard to suffer martyrdom in Rome, he opposed the Docetists and Docetism. Saint Ignatius of Antioch calls them “the devil’s plant.” Who were the Docetists? They were heretics who, precisely because they could not comprehend the Incarnation of God, claimed that the human nature present in Christ was not real but only apparent, existing merely in seeming. You see, the word “Docetism” comes from a verb meaning “to seem” or “to suppose.” Docetism was nothing other than a denial of Christ’s human nature. It was an early form of Monophysitism, and this Monophysitism would later—

Arianism is the opposite: it denies Christ’s divine nature—not His human nature, but His divine nature—claiming that He is not God. Here the claim is the reverse: that He is not man, and that His suffering upon the Cross was only apparent. It was as though He were a phantom whom those crucifying Him imagined they had seized and crucified, while in reality He suffered nothing upon the Cross. Thus He was not truly nailed to it, did not truly feel pain, and did not truly die, because this human nature existed only in seeming—that is, only in appearance.

As you understand, this is a heresy—a heresy that struck at the very salvation of man. For Saint Athanasius the Great and other Fathers said, “What is not assumed is not healed and is not saved.” Therefore, if the Son of God did not assume human nature, that nature cannot be saved. Why? Because human nature had to be truly united with the Son, so that He might truly become the firstborn of all mankind and, as man, open the way to Heaven.

What does this mean? He had to conquer sin in His flesh. It makes no sense to speak of God conquering sin. What would it mean for God to conquer sin? It is inconceivable. He had to conquer sin as man. As man, He had to conquer death. And as man, He ultimately had to come before God. This is why it says that, as man, He sat at the right hand of God the Father. These three things show that man now follows behind Jesus Christ, and follows Him through faith. Faith is nothing other than making Jesus Christ our own: I go and join myself to Jesus Christ. But this union, this cleaving to Him—

this cleaving—the word means to be joined or attached, not to be hindered or prevented. The Apostle Paul already uses this very word: “He who is joined to a prostitute,” he says, and “he who is joined to the Lord”—the one who goes and cleaves to the Lord. This union with Christ is ontological; it is organic. For I make Christ my body and my blood by partaking of the Body and Blood of Christ. This takes place through faith; faith, in other words, is the way. Then I follow Christ wherever He goes. Where did He go? As man, He went to the right hand of God the Father. I too shall go there. If, therefore, we suppose that the Son of God did not become man—

then man’s salvation does not exist; it is inconceivable. You see, therefore, that this truly attacks the doctrine of the salvation of the whole human person. Someone might say, “What do you mean by ‘man’? Surely it does not matter whether the human body is saved; the soul will be saved.” Yes, but then it is not man who is saved, only man’s soul. What exactly is saved, then? One part of man. Yet the soul by itself is not called man. Man means the whole human person—what we call soul and body together. I must tell you, however, that historically this Docetism marks the beginning of the heresy of Monophysitism, which Saint Ignatius fought, if I may use the expression, with tremendous ferocity. He fought this heresy relentlessly. Later it would assume other forms, but it would always remain Monophysitism. You know that the Armenians, who did not accept the conclusions of the Fourth Ecumenical Council and are called non-Chalcedonians because they rejected the conclusions of Chalcedon, are regarded as Monophysites. They are regarded as such. And still—

Monophysitism was opposed especially by the Seventh Ecumenical Council. Do you know what form it took then? It took the following form. As I told you, Monophysitism has a history with many stages. Yet it is always the same. It changes its clothing—it is forever changing its clothing and its outward form—and keeps reappearing. Listen now to how it appeared: as an attempt to prevent the veneration of the holy icons, that is, as Iconoclasm. What is Iconoclasm at its root? Do you know what it really is? Some superficial people might say, “My dear fellow, Iconoclasm lasted for more than a hundred years.”

Indeed, some would like to claim that Iconoclasm weakened the Byzantine Empire and caused it eventually to fall to the Turks. They say that the Orthodox are so particular and so pedantic that, out of fanaticism, they spent more than a hundred years defending a position that was not really very important. First of all, my dear friends, Byzantium did not fall because of Iconoclasm. Byzantium was weakened by the corruption of its people. Those in authority were deeply corrupt. Pay attention to what I have said:

those in authority were deeply corrupt. The corruption began in the palace, but the people too were deeply corrupt. This corruption consumed Byzantium, just as it consumes every empire. Corruption consumed the Roman Empire. Corruption consumed the Babylonian Empire. Corruption consumed the Assyrian Empire. Corruption consumed the Greek empire of Alexander the Great, and so on. Therefore, Christianity and its struggle to remain faithful to doctrine are not to blame. The Fathers of our Church struggled so intensely because the question was whether or not we could depict—

the person of Christ. The Iconoclasts said that we must not depict the person of Christ, that it was not permissible. “The divine nature,” they said, “cannot be circumscribed.” Yes, the divine nature cannot be circumscribed. But since the divine became circumscribable—that is, since God became man—He can therefore be depicted. Consequently, pay close attention: the refusal to venerate the icons is, at its root, Monophysitism. For if we insist only that the divine nature cannot be circumscribed, we deny the human nature, which can be circumscribed and depicted.

Depict Him! Thus, through the holy icon, the Seventh Ecumenical Council upheld Christ’s divine and human nature. Yet in upholding Christ’s divine and human nature, it specifically defended His human nature. This was the reverse of the First Ecumenical Council, which defended His divine nature, because at that time it was the divine nature that was under attack, whereas now His human nature was under attack. Do you know what the Seventh Ecumenical Council preserved? As I told you, it preserved the salvation of man—the complete salvation of man—and also the possibility that man may attain theosis, that is, divinisation. This is what Christ revealed on Mount Tabor when He was transfigured.

Since He was truly transfigured, it would be very strange to suppose that His human nature on Tabor existed only in seeming, merely as an appearance. Then the question would arise: what about His garments, which became white as light? Who can deny that those garments were material? Does anyone seriously deny it? The garments were woven on a loom, and the material that reached the loom—whether flax, cotton, wool, or whatever you wish to call it—was matter. Yet this matter, Scripture says, became white as light. This means that here we have a real theosis, a true divinisation of matter. If His garments became radiant as light—

how much more could His body? It was therefore a real body, just as the garments were real matter. What, then, does the Transfiguration reveal? It reveals that man can attain theosis. And if it shows that man can attain theosis, then when you deny—when the Iconoclast denies—that we can depict Christ’s body and says that we must not make an icon of it, he denies man’s capacity for theosis. Then those other words of Christ are also emptied of meaning: “The righteous will shine like the sun in the Kingdom of their Father.” What will shine in the righteous—the soul alone, or the soul and body together? If Christ was truly transfigured—

and if it was truly a human body, then this shows that the whole human person will attain theosis. You see, the question of the icon is not so simple. Some might say, with great superficiality, that a few fanatical monks of the eighth century fought in defense of icons. Yet, as you know, their teaching rested upon many earlier Fathers and, above all, upon a marvelous treatise—as we would call it today—written by Saint John of Damascus. Of course, Saint John of Damascus had already died and was no longer living. But he left behind this work, and on the basis of it the Seventh Ecumenical Council established its—

conclusions: namely, that the Son of God truly became man and, having become man, can be depicted. Iconoclasm was a form of Monophysitism. This is an immensely important issue, as momentous as the issue of Arianism, though at the opposite pole, as I explained earlier. Therefore, it is by no means accidental that our Church—though at various times she commemorates the Fathers of the different Ecumenical Councils—commemorates the Fathers of the Seventh Ecumenical Council—

on the first Sunday of Great Lent and calls that Sunday the Sunday of Orthodoxy. Why? Precisely because this is a matter of Orthodoxy. Is this a small matter, then? After the explanation I have given you, can it be called narrow-minded? Far from it. It is a matter of life and death, a matter of salvation—true salvation. Therefore, when Saint Cyril writes here that Christ “was truly crucified for our sins,” this word “truly” carries great importance. But pay attention to one more thing. Monophysitism—

Monophysitism is constantly changing its garments throughout history. As we said, it first appeared as Docetism, and later it reached the point of being condemned as iconoclasm by the Seventh Ecumenical Council. But does Monophysitism still exist today? Yes, my beloved, Monophysitism exists even today. Sometimes it appears in the claim that Jesus Christ is only a man. That too is Monophysitism, because it accepts only one nature. At other times, it claims that Jesus Christ is not God,

and therefore that He is only a man—again, a form of Monophysitism. At still other times, it claims that He is God but not man. The name Monophysitism has been applied more particularly to this second case: the claim that He is not truly man. Does it exist in this form today? Yes, it does. Can you imagine how? Its roots lie buried in Platonism. That is where the roots of Monophysitism are found: in the belief that God, as absolute spirit, can never have any relation to matter or to the material world. And consequently,

how could Christ be truly human? This Monophysitism lies beneath the surface. It says that God could never become man; and even if, for a moment, He did become man, He quickly cast off His human nature. Do you know how many Protestants answer this question? I say many, meaning many Protestant groups and denominations. Listen to what they say. When Christ was taken up into Heaven, they say, His body dissolved by itself during His ascent. But this is precisely why God became man: to bring human existence into Heaven, both body and soul. That is what it means for God to have become man. He assumed a human soul and a human body. He became man precisely in order to bring that human body into Heaven. And now you tell us that it dissolved? It is unthinkable. Since the modern Chiliasts arose from Protestantism, they say the same thing. This is why they hold that Christ’s body no longer exists. They say that Christ ascended into Heaven and is now invisible and is a spirit—but not Spirit in the sense that He is God, because they also embrace Arianism.

For them, Christ is not God but a creature, whom they regard as a noble spirit. Thus modern Chiliasm contains both Arianism, which regards Christ as a creature, and Monophysitism, which strips Him of His human nature. I will say it once more: Monophysitism lies beneath the surface. It exists, but it changes its form. You may ask, where else can it be found? It can even be found in the lives of Christians. How? When a Christian thinks that only his soul must be sanctified, and not his body. How terrible that is! Or when a Christian believes that Holy Matrimony is unclean.

Or when a Christian believes that human seed is unclean, and that only what is higher has value—I hardly know how to describe this attitude or how to make it clear to you. It treats the spirit and the soul as a kind of aristocracy, while the body is considered lowly and unimportant. This is Monophysitism. Because people cannot grasp the Incarnation of the Son of God, this Monophysitism has entered into our actions and into our daily lives. It is terrible! We must finally cast off this way of thinking. Our Church resists this tendency in every way, this heresy that lies hidden in the lives of Christians. How does She resist it? I will explain at once. First of all, there is the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist: we take bread and wine and receive the Body and Blood of Christ. Second, every sanctifying act of the Church concerns both soul and body. She performs the blessing of water, has icons, gives flowers, and presents us with the Cross, made of wood or metal, which we venerate. Every movement, every expression, and every manifestation of the Church includes the material element.

This means that the material element is also present. It means that the Church strives in every way to combat this Monophysitism that lies beneath the surface. I have dwelt on this at length, but it is very useful for you to understand these things in connection with the words, “Thus He was truly crucified for our sins.” Certainly. This attitude exists today as well. I remember that, some years ago, whenever Pascha approached, magazines and newspapers would make a show of including a Christian article. They would also print a photograph or an icon of the Resurrection of Christ, simply because it was timely.

Apart from that, these secular newspapers and magazines have no connection whatsoever with Christ or His Resurrection. None at all. They do it merely because it is timely. And do you know, my beloved, what they usually write? Something dreadful! They say that the Resurrection of Christ is so reminiscent of nature’s rebirth. Christ’s Resurrection took place in spring, they claim, in order to express the springtime renewal of nature. In other words, they are introducing paganism, pure and simple. They do this because they cannot grasp that God became man. They cannot comprehend it. A person simply says, “I do not believe,” and that is the end of it. Do you understand? “Even if you wished to deny it, this visible place would refute you—this blessed Golgotha, where we are now gathered because of Him who was crucified upon it.”

In other words, Christ was truly crucified. Here, however, “truly” does not refer to whether His flesh was real, but to the historical reality of the event. This is another aspect, another whole subject. The question now is not whether Christ was truly man, but whether He existed historically. That too has been called into question, has it not? Did He exist or not? I have told you this before. If you open the Great Russian Encyclopedia—I do not know Russian myself, of course, but I have read about this—the entry under “Jesus Christ” contains only two or three lines, while Marx, naturally, receives entire pages. It says: “Jesus Christ, a mythical figure.” Of course, the claim that Christ is a mythical figure is not new. It undoubtedly has older roots. And if you wish to know, Marxism was not born in Russia; Russia fell victim to Marxism. Marxism was born in Germany. Marx was German, born to Jewish parents who became the worst kind of Protestants.

Protestantism gave birth to these things. Allow me here to release, just a little, what I feel within me. When we know what Protestantism has produced, it is enough to consider that it produced a Marx, without mentioning so many other things. It also produced those who denied the historical existence of Jesus Christ. If, for example, you open Trembelas’s apologetic work Jesus of Nazareth, which concerns the person of Jesus Christ, you will see the many theories that have been directed against Him, among them

the denial of the historical existence of Jesus Christ—the claim that He was merely a mythical figure. Therefore, when the Russian Encyclopedia writes that Jesus Christ is a mythical figure, this claim naturally has older and deeper roots. As I told you, its roots lie in the atheism of Europe. This Europe—this Europe—has brought forth these things. It is the great harlot that has poisoned the whole world. Europe, however, will pay a heavy price. Europe will pay a very heavy price.

nevertheless, precisely because the very person of Christ is also denied, Saint Cyril now speaks here not only with respect to

Christ’s human nature—whether it was truly human—when he uses the adverb “truly” and says that He was truly crucified. He now also means that the Crucifixion truly took place in history, and therefore that Christ existed historically. He says: “Even if you wished to deny it, this visible place would refute you—this blessed Golgotha, where we are now gathered because of Him who was crucified upon it.” We are gathered here. It is well known that the Church of the Resurrection, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, had already been built.

These catechetical lectures were delivered in Jerusalem, in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. We are speaking of the year 350; that is when these catechetical lectures were given and recorded. It is known that the Church of the Holy Sepulchre was built sometime around 330 or 343—I do not remember exactly—a little after the First Ecumenical Council, which took place in 325. It was built by Saint Helen, the mother of Saint Constantine. It is therefore known that the Church of the Holy Sepulchre was built over the Tomb of Christ. Christ’s Tomb was very close to Golgotha, and so the Church of the Holy Sepulchre encompassed both Golgotha and the Tomb. This is why Saint Cyril says that even if you wished to deny

the Crucifixion of Christ, this very place—this church in which we now stand, as Saint Cyril was telling those gathered there—refutes you and tells you that things are not as you claim. But there is something more: “From the wood of the Cross, the whole inhabited world has now been filled, piece by piece.” When the True Cross was found, it was divided into pieces, and the whole world, the entire inhabited earth, was filled with them. It is known that one large piece remained in Jerusalem, while another considerably large piece reached Constantinople. It is also known that today the piece from Constantinople, perhaps smaller than it was then...

two smaller portions of it are found on the Holy Mountain. The largest surviving portion of the True Cross in the world today is found, if I am not mistaken, at the Monastery of Xeropotamou. It is set within a cross-shaped reliquary. But as Saint Cyril says here, the whole inhabited world was filled with pieces of the True Cross. Of course, much could be said about the True Cross—many things indeed. I will say only that dividing it into portions is permitted, just as dividing holy relics into portions is permitted, because each portion is a blessing. The wood of the True Cross received the precious Body of Christ

and therefore the wood itself became precious and received the grace of the crucified Christ. In the same way, the bones of the Saints, which received the grace of God while these people lived as Saints, also bear the grace of God. We might therefore say that the True Cross and the holy relics of the Saints belong to the same theological category. “He was crucified, not for His own sins, but so that we might be freed from our sins.” Christ was not crucified for sins of His own, but so that we might be freed from ours. Jesus Christ is indeed without sin. “At that time He was despised by men and struck as a man, but creation recognized that He was God. For when the sun saw its Master dishonored, it failed and trembled, unable to endure the sight.” You see how Saint Cyril always keeps the two natures of Christ in view and emphasizes them continually in his words. As man, he says, Christ was crucified, despised, and struck—that is, slapped. Yet creation itself recognized

that He was God. When the sun saw its Master—Saint Cyril personifies the sun—being dishonored upon the Cross, it lost its strength, so to speak; it became powerless. It failed, meaning that its strength left it and its light went out. It was like a person who loses his strength and begins to tremble, unable to endure the sight of his Creator, Jesus Christ, suffering. Of course, this is more than mere personification. There is something far deeper here, something we have said many times and that you already know: creation follows man. When man rebels against God, creation rebels against man.

Thus, when creation sees, so to speak, that man is turning against God, creation responds to this rebellion of man against God. These are the few words Saint Cyril gives us here concerning the Cross of Christ, that is, concerning His Crucifixion. Let us now consider the equally brief words he offers concerning Christ’s burial: “He was truly laid in a rock-hewn tomb as man, but the rocks were split apart in fear because of Him.” Truly and really, he says, as man He was placed in a tomb of stone.

The rocks split apart in fear because of Him. It was like what happened when the tomb was opened and the stone was rolled away—not, of course, so that Christ could come out, because Christ did not need the entrance to be opened in order to leave. You know this. Christ rose before the Angel rolled away the stone. The stone was not rolled away so that Christ could come out, but so that the soldiers standing guard would be terrified and flee. A small, local earthquake took place, together with a fearsome radiance from the appearance of the Angel—or Angels: one according to one Evangelist and two according to another—and so the soldiers fled.

so that they might go and bear witness that Jesus Christ had risen. At the same time, once they had gone, the women would find the entrance open. They had been saying, “What shall we do now? Who will roll away the stone for us?” For, as the sacred text says, “it was very large.” It was an exceedingly large stone. Who would roll it away for them? The stone was rolled away for these two reasons, and also to reveal that the tomb was empty. But Christ had already risen before the stone was rolled away. What does this mean? He came forth in the same way that He entered the upper room while the doors were shut. Thus, He was truly laid in the tomb as a man. Notice that word “truly.”

A theologian who knows which heresies are circulating also knows why certain words must be emphasized. You see, Saint Cyril is a theologian—Saint Cyril. He stresses the word “truly” and repeats it. Yet the rocks were split because of Him, for the One who was buried, having become man, was God. Pay attention to something here. When the Apostle Paul speaks about the resurrection of the dead in the thirteenth—in the fifteenth chapter of First Corinthians—he establishes the resurrection of the dead upon the Resurrection of Christ. But the Resurrection of Christ is established by the Crucifixion. And see how the Apostle Paul establishes it both prophetically and historically.

There he says that Christ died—that He was crucified, died, and was buried. How does he express this? Pay attention: “under Pontius Pilate.” In other words, he places the event within history. It is like saying, as we have discussed, that a certain event occurred during the reign of a particular governor. Secondly, he says, “according to the Scriptures.” This means that the Apostle Paul establishes the Crucifixion, the death, and the Resurrection of Christ, I repeat, both historically and prophetically. That is why we too say in the Creed that Christ died and rose again. How do we say it? “According to the Scriptures,” meaning according to the prophets. This is fundamental—absolutely fundamental.

This is of immense importance, because it constitutes a testimony to the truth. “He descended into the regions beneath the earth, that from there also He might deliver the righteous.” He descended into the regions beneath the earth—that is, into the places below the earth.

From there, “that from there also,” He might deliver the righteous. I shall read you the passage, because it is relevant, and afterward I shall explain it. “Tell me, then: would you have wished those who were living to enjoy grace, even though most of them were not holy, while those who had long been confined since the time of Adam did not obtain their freedom? The Prophet Isaiah proclaimed the clear truths about Him with a mighty voice. Would you not have wished the King to descend and deliver His herald? David is there, and Samuel, and all the Prophets, and John himself, who said through those he sent, ‘Are You the One who is to come, or should we expect another?’ Would you not have wished Him to descend and deliver His friends?”

This passage forms a single whole, and here the subject of Christ’s burial comes to an end. What I mean is this: Christ descended into Hades to deliver the righteous. What would you have wanted, Saint Cyril asks? That all those who were alive should enjoy the grace of God and salvation, even though, after all, not all of them were holy but some were sinners, while the righteous of the Old Testament, who were already in Hades, should not be saved? Should they not be saved? Isaiah, who proclaimed so many great things about Christ with a mighty voice—would the King, Christ the King, not descend there to save His herald? David was there, and Samuel was there.

All the prophets were there. John the Baptist was there. Should not all of them have been saved? One Father of our Church says—forgive me, it is actually in a resurrectional troparion, though I do not remember in which canon—that Christ descended into Hades to meet Adam. How beautiful that is. He descended into Hades to meet Adam, the very one whom He had driven out of Paradise. For at that time He had promised that He would save him: “He shall bruise your head,” and so forth.

The One who would be born, and so forth—“and you shall bruise His heel”—as the Lord God said to the devil. I will not go into all the details; you know them. Now He descends into Hades to find Adam, as though searching for him, seeking him out. And He finds him there and takes him with Him. But together with Adam, He also takes all the righteous of the Old Testament and leads them into Paradise. What Paradise does this mean? It is that part of Hades in which divine glory is now present. They remain there as souls, of course, and now enjoy the glory of Christ. There dwell the righteous of the Old Testament, as well as all those who depart from this world until the Second Coming of Christ. In Hades

Paradise came to be. Not all of Hades, because for the ungodly it remained what Hades had always been. They await the resurrection of the dead, after which they will be led into Hell. And so Saint Cyril says here: “Do you see that Christ descended there precisely to deliver all the righteous who had departed from this world before the Crucifixion of Christ?” But let us now look very briefly at what he says about the Resurrection. “Having descended into the regions beneath the earth, He rose again; and Jesus, after being buried, truly rose again on the third day.” He descended below, into Hades. The regions beneath the earth and Hades are not literally identical terms, but they are identical in meaning. He rose again—that is, He was resurrected. Jesus, after being buried, truly rose on the third day. “And if the Jews should ever mock you, answer them swiftly with this question: Jonah came forth from the sea creature after three days; did Christ, then, not rise from the earth after three days?” If a Jew asks how Christ could have risen, doubting the Resurrection of Christ, then say to him: Jonah remained for three days in the belly of the sea creature.

He was not affected by the digestive fluids of that great fish. Have you never considered that? Have you thought about what it means that Jonah remained for three days and three nights inside the creature’s belly? As soon as we eat something, the digestive fluids immediately begin their work—and they are powerful indeed. Is it not hydrochloric acid? Hydrochloric acid. And the food begins to break down. That is why, when something rises from our stomach into our throat, it feels dreadful. Yet Jonah spent three days and three nights amid the fearsome digestive fluids of the sea creature. He should have been broken down and digested.

But he suffered no harm. You believe, O Jew, that Jonah suffered no harm. Why, then, do you not believe that Jesus Christ, of whom Jonah was a type, suffered no corruption? Nothing happened to Him. And just as the fish brought Jonah forth again, so Christ rose again. “A dead man touched the bones of Elisha and was raised; shall not the Maker of mankind, by the power of the Father, rise all the more readily?” Once, as you know, some people were taking a dead man for burial, and near the place where they intended to bury him was the tomb of the Prophet Elisha.

They dug there to lay the dead man in the grave. Then those who had come to bury him saw some raiders approaching. Terrified at the sight of them, they threw the dead man into the tomb and fled. When the dead man came into contact with Elisha’s bones, he was raised from the dead. Holy Scripture states this clearly. And here, incidentally, we also have a testimony concerning holy relics. Where are those who do not believe in holy relics? Where are those whom I see—and it astonishes and saddens me—when we offer them the holy relics to venerate? I do not know what comes over them: “Am I supposed to venerate bones now?” You will receive grace when you venerate holy relics. Just as that man was raised when he came into contact with Elisha’s relics, so you too will be raised

spiritually; you will receive grace, and so forth. That man truly was raised. And Saint Cyril now says: “Tell the Jew that the man was raised merely because he came into contact with Elisha’s bones. Could not the Creator of all rise from the dead?” “He truly rose, and having risen, He appeared again to the disciples.” Christ truly rose, and after rising He appeared again to the disciples. Twelve disciples were witnesses of this Resurrection—twelve witnesses of the Resurrection. I am not correcting Saint Cyril, but adding something:

there were more than five hundred witnesses of the Resurrection of Christ, for they also saw Him at the Ascension. “They bore witness not with mere words and clever turns of phrase, but struggled unto torture and death for the true Resurrection.” They did not speak about the Resurrection of Christ as a literary theme or as something merely romantic. They gave their lives for the Resurrection of Christ. Listen carefully to this point. It is pleasant to tell a fairy tale among friends, but I do not think it is easy to die for one. Therefore, if the disciples gave their lives and died—and indeed suffered martyrdom—then what they testified to was no fairy tale.

It was the truth: Christ had truly risen. In other words, they were witnesses. “By the mouth of two or three witnesses every word shall be established,” according to Scripture. “But twelve bear witness to the Resurrection of Christ, and do you still disbelieve the Resurrection?” Scripture says that every word is established by two or three witnesses—that is, a statement is accepted as true. Here we have twelve witnesses. And as I told you, there were five hundred—more than five hundred. The Apostle Paul tells us this: “He appeared to more than five hundred brethren.” More than five hundred people—and you still do not believe the twelve witnesses who testify that Christ rose? But, as I was telling you,

let us stop here. Our next subject will be the Ascension and the judgment to come. As I have told you, and always tell you, my dear friends, the foundation of our salvation is the death and Resurrection of Christ. This is the foundation of our salvation. That is why the Apostle Paul says that if Christ has not risen from the dead, then neither are the dead raised. And if the dead are not raised, then our faith is in vain and our preaching is also in vain. I earnestly appeal to your love and your good disposition: let your faith in the Resurrection of Christ

become something very, very strong within you. Let us have no doubts concerning the Resurrection of Christ. Indeed, when the time comes to speak about the Resurrection of Christ in detail, in the catechesis devoted to it, we must establish this matter from every possible side. Within us, the question of Christ’s Resurrection must be fully settled. It must truly and completely be our foundation. Upon it we build everything. If we deny the Resurrection of Christ, what do we have? We have nothing. That is why those who reject the faith do not primarily attack this or that work of Christ; they attack His Resurrection.

Of course, those who reject the faith also attack other things, but only secondarily. Their principal attack is against the Resurrection. That is what they call into question. In this, they do nothing but repeat what the Jews did. The soldiers went and reported that Christ had risen—that the One whose tomb they were guarding had risen. They testified to the appearance of the Angel, the flash of light, the earthquake, and the empty tomb. They had been seized with terror. “They became,” Scripture says, “like dead men.” But those wretched Jews—what perversity! Oh, what perversity! Can you imagine it? Instead of trembling and saying, “What have we done?”

instead of falling face down upon the ground and crying, “What have we done?” they gave the soldiers money and told them to say, “While we were sleeping, the disciples came and stole the body.” You know that John Chrysostom was a lawyer, do you not? Did you know that? John Chrysostom was a lawyer. You should see how John Chrysostom refutes the Jews’ arguments word by word. “Ah, so the soldiers were sleeping,” he says. He speaks like a lawyer in court, seeking to convict the accused—in this case, the Jews—and to show that they are unreliable,

corrupt men. He takes their words step by step, refutes them, and exposes their contradictions, and so forth. Of course, I do not know whether I shall go into all of that. I only want to say this: these people tried to distort the event of the Resurrection of Christ. And to this day, the devil continues to do the same thing through various enemies.

Then we have no account to give to God, there is no Christ as Judge, no end to history—nothing at all. What a lovely fairy tale that is! This is the kind of fable that tickles the ears, as the Apostle Paul says. But, my beloved, Christ truly became incarnate, truly died upon the Cross, and truly rose again. Those who believe in Christ truly have as the foundation of their salvation the death and Resurrection of Christ.
