Summary

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem’s Fourth Catechesis gives catechumens a concise overview of ten foundational dogmas before treating them more fully in later instructions. The one God is eternally good and just, so attempts to divide the supposedly severe God of the Old Testament from the merciful God of the New Testament destroy Christian monotheism. The Father created all things through His only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ, and is simultaneously present throughout creation by His energies while remaining wholly distinct from creation in His divine essence.

We are in the Fourth Catechesis of Saint Cyril, Bishop of Jerusalem. In this catechesis he briefly presents ten dogmas, so as to give his catechumens a general overview of the great foundational truths that he will examine in the catecheses that follow. He will explain them in detail later; but first he gives them this overview, so that his catechumens will not become lost in all the details as he proceeds.

For this reason, he says only a few words here about these ten dogmas. We too will try to give a very brief outline of their distinctive features, because further on he will indeed offer us a much fuller explanation. Saint Cyril, of course, is speaking to catechumens—that is, to people who are ready to receive Christ and whose Baptism is approaching. We might ask whether what we are about to examine could also be useful to someone who is, formally speaking, an atheist, since Saint Cyril is speaking here about God.

Perhaps the answer is yes. Yet here, of course, he presupposes the existence of God and speaks about the attributes of God, and this is something addressed to believers. Whether this would be of use to certain atheists is a separate matter. If our audience consisted of atheists, we would need to offer a different kind of explanation. When speaking to believers, we proceed differently. Saint Cyril was speaking to believers then, and we who are gathered here today are also believers. Therefore, there is no question of our having to “prove”—and I place that verb in quotation marks—the existence of God. We presuppose it.

Our purpose is to speak about God. Needless to say, all those proofs that were used in the past, and are perhaps still used today, may have some value, but only a relative value. These proofs come mainly from Western theology, which is based upon Thomas Aquinas. In the East, no attempt was ever made to prove the existence of God. Never. The matter is very simple. If I have an atheist before me who says, “I do not believe in God,” then perhaps, in order to help him, I may be compelled to use, as a kind of crutch...

the methods employed in the West—the Western theology known as Thomistic theology. In reality, however, I would simply say to him: “Listen, my dear friend. Either tell me that you believe, and I will begin to speak about God, or tell me, ‘I do not believe,’ and I will stop speaking. I will regard you as an atheist, and that is the end of it. There can be no further dialogue.” Do not be surprised by the position I am expressing, because we have grown accustomed to entering into dialogue with atheists. Yet do not forget that atheism is like an epidemic. When influenza begins to spread—for example, when the first cold weather arrives—before long everyone seems to have caught it.

So it is here as well. Once some people begin speaking about atheism, everyone catches the germ of atheism and everyone pretends to be an atheist. But there is no depth to it. There is none, because genuine atheists are in fact very few. Perhaps this is why we make a concession and undertake a dialogue with an atheist: simply to help him recover from the illness he has caught, just as one catches an epidemic disease. Nevertheless, I repeat that everything we are about to say presupposes the existence of God. We shall speak about the attributes of God—or, better still, about who God is.

We shall speak about how we must rightly believe in Him. The expression “attributes” is not wrong, but it is better to speak of the divine uncreated energies of God. When we hold firmly to this true knowledge of God, it becomes the foundation—not simply for believing in God, but for believing in God in an Orthodox manner. For belief in God that is not Orthodox is blasphemy. Even to say, “I believe in a higher power,” is blasphemy. Why? Because God is not merely a higher power, still less an impersonal higher power, or anything of that kind.

The Holy Trinity has revealed Himself to us. All the more, if I have been baptized in the name of the Holy Trinity, I cannot say that I believe in some higher power, because that truly is, as I have said, a form of blasphemy. Saint Cyril says—or rather, he spoke, and others, his listeners, wrote his words down—“Let the dogma concerning God first be established in our soul.” The first thing we must do is establish within your own soul...

the dogma concerning God. A brief word: what does “dogma” mean? Today the word shocks and scandalizes some people who want complete freedom of thought. They say, “You are such a dogmatic person. You do not want dialogue; you simply pronounce dogmas,” and so forth. They use the words “dogma” and “dogmatize” in every possible sense. Pay attention, my dear friends. Dogma means—I will not analyze the word itself or its original meaning. “A decree went out from Caesar”: there, dogma means a command. But I am not speaking about that now, lest we go too far. As I have said, we shall examine these matters in detail later. A dogma is a truth set forth...

in Holy Scripture through divine revelation, which the Fathers of our Church, when confronted by heretical teachings, authoritatively upheld with one mind in the Councils. That is all. It is therefore nothing new. The Fathers did not invent the dogmas; they are not something new. The dogmas are already set forth in Holy Scripture. When the interpretation of a truth was called into question, the Fathers came forward to uphold that truth which had already been set forth in Holy Scripture. That is all. That is what dogma is. Therefore, we must establish within your soul the dogma concerning God.

He says that the dogma concerning God must be established because it truly is the foundation. Who, then, is this God? He will tell us next: “There is only one God.” God is one. There are no other gods. As for the essence of God—we shall see a little later, when he speaks about Jesus Christ. After all, do you know what Saint Cyril’s catecheses really are? They are an exposition of the Creed. In a later catechesis he will first speak about the word we use in the Creed: “I believe.” The words “I believe” are repeated at every step. I believe...

in one God; I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ; I believe in the Holy Spirit; I believe in One; I believe in Holy; I believe in the Apostolic Church. You see, “I believe” is repeated throughout. For the sake of expression, however, we say it only at the beginning, with the understanding that “I believe” applies to every point, every article of the Creed. He will therefore give us a special explanation first of faith, then of God, then of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, then of the Holy Spirit, and so forth. God, then, is one in essence. The persons are three. God is one. He is unbegotten.

He was not begotten by anyone else, because if He had been begotten by another, then naturally the one who begot Him would have existed before the one begotten. But no one exists before God, because God is before all things. Before all things. Then comes that naïve question: “And who made God?” Why ask, “Who made Him?” It is a naïve question. Yes, a foolish one. God, therefore, is unbegotten and without beginning.

He has no beginning. This is exceedingly difficult and incomprehensible to us. You see, concepts such as “unbegotten” and “without beginning,” as well as the concept of nothingness, are incomprehensible within philosophy. Because they cannot be grasped, philosophy does not employ them. Aristotle said, “From nothing, nothing comes.” What can you bring forth from nothing? Nothing. Holy Scripture answers, “From nothing, everything”—the whole universe. From nothing God brought forth the universe.

It is beyond conception—utterly beyond conception and incomprehensible. Philosophy has nothing to do with the concept of nothingness, nor with the idea of being without beginning, nor with that of being unbegotten. These belong purely to the realm of theology. God, then, is without beginning. He has no beginning. I should tell you that philosophy moves within the realm of time. Just as philosophy cannot understand the beginning, neither can it understand the end. It may claim that the world has always existed, without a beginning—a temporal beginning, that is—and without an end: that it existed, exists now, and will continue to exist. But it says this only because it has no other way of dealing with the matter. For if the world did not exist...

what existed before the world came into being? Philosophy would find itself facing still more difficult questions. But God is beyond time. Whatever we might say would remain within the bounds of time, whereas God is beyond both time and space. For God, therefore, there is neither end nor beginning. When Jesus Christ says in the Apocalypse, “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” He means everything that begins and everything that ends. This is what Alpha and Omega signify. Everything that begins and everything that ends is in Me, belongs to Me, and is contained within Me.

It is something like this: I Myself am not contained within that circle of beginning and end. God, therefore, is without beginning.

He is immutable. What does “immutable” mean? It means that He undergoes no turning or change. Saint James, the Brother of the Lord, says that in God there is no “shadow of turning”; in other words, He is unchanging. He cannot be good at one moment and evil at another. He cannot undergo alterations or changes. Mutability always belongs within the realm of space and time. God is beyond space and time; He is unchanging and immutable. Created beings are not immutable, especially rational created beings. The proof is that some of the angels fell. What did they undergo? A turning—that is, a change. From what to what? From good to evil. Man, too, is not immutable.

God, however, is immutable and unchanging. God undergoes no alteration whatsoever. “Neither was He begotten by another”—He was not begotten by anyone—“nor does He have another as the successor to His life”—nor will someone else come after God.

That is to say, He is without beginning, unbegotten, and without successor. “Nor did He begin to live in time.” I have already explained these things to you; now I am simply stating them as Saint Cyril expresses them. He did not begin to live within time. He is beyond time. “Nor does He ever come to an end.”

God never comes to an end, nor does He die. The Greek verb here has both meanings: to come to an end and to die. God neither ends nor dies. Indeed, somewhere in the Old Testament He says, “I am not a recent God.” In other words: “My people, you are being led astray by the gods worshiped by the idolatrous nations. I am not a recent or new god. Why, then, do you turn to new deities? I am the eternal God.” Notice that every one of these teachings of Saint Cyril has its foundation in Holy Scripture. Nothing is left unsupported.

Let me emphasize this. These are not ideas we have devised or invented ourselves. They are taken by revelation from Holy Scripture, from both the New Testament and the Old Testament. The prophets, in particular, give us many descriptions of God, which form the foundation for what we believe about His divine uncreated energies. “And this God is good and just.” God is good. The very essence of God is good; it is not merely that God chooses to be good.

The very essence of God is good, and this is not true of created essences. When God creates beings—the universe as a whole, and particular beings such as rational creatures, human beings, angels, the angelic world, and the world of spirits—these created beings are by nature neither good nor evil. They may become good or evil according to how they exercise their free will. No evil essence exists. Demons are not evil in their essence.

Their essence is neither good nor evil in itself; it is not characterized as either. But through his own free choice, the devil became wicked. Therefore, no wicked essence exists, because God creates all essences, and God could not possibly create wicked ones. Yet He does not create them good by nature either, because if He created beings whose very essence was good, then the things He created would themselves be gods. Diadochos of Photike expresses this beautifully. In a remarkable chapter, he says that evil is non-being, whereas good truly has being. Good truly exists as essence because God exists.

This means that God is good in His very essence. And since He is immutable and unchanging, there can never be any possibility that God will cease to be good. It is impossible. God, then, is good and just, which means that He is always just. Saint Cyril says: “If you ever hear a heretic say, ‘The just God is one, and the good God is another,’ immediately recall what you have been taught and recognize the venom of that heresy.” If you remember what I have told you...

you will recognize the poison of the heresy. You may ask, “What exactly does this mean?” Pay attention. I beg you, do not become discouraged, even though these things may seem a little difficult at the moment. I am trying to explain them as clearly as I can.

You see, when the New Testament appeared, heretics also appeared. The devil had, of course, been crushed by the Cross of Christ and His Resurrection. But now he comes to corrupt the truth, since he could do harm in no other way. For the One whom he had hung upon the Cross rose from the dead. What a calamity for him! What could he do now? He resorts to corruption and tries to corrupt the Gospel for us.

He corrupts it through heresies. In this particular case, as soon as the New Testament appeared, what did the heretics say? They claimed that in the Old Testament God appears as just: you committed this evil, so you will be punished, and that is the end of it. But in the New Testament, they said, God appears as good, compassionate, and merciful. The Lord says, “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.” So if a heretic comes and tells you, “The just God is one God, and the good God is another”...

he is introducing two gods from the outset. Monotheism is immediately shattered, and Christianity itself is destroyed. Saint Cyril says that the same God is both just and good—the same person, the one God. Indeed, Saint Cyril says something else later on—though it will take us a long time to reach that point. He says: “What are you claiming? That the God of the Old Testament is vengeful and jealous, a consuming fire? And that the God of the New Testament is good? Have you not heard what Christ says?”

“I came to cast fire upon the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled!” I came to set fire upon the earth, and what more could I desire once that fire has been kindled? Elsewhere Christ says: “Do you think that I came to bring peace upon the earth? I came to bring a sword upon the earth.” Read Holy Scripture, and you will remember these passages. “I came to bring a sword upon the earth and to divide father from son, and daughter-in-law from mother-in-law.” Therefore, the good God is also the just God. They are not two gods. There is one God, both just and good.

Neither divine uncreated energy abolishes or opposes the other: the energy of God’s justice does not oppose the energy of His goodness. God is both just and good—the same God, the one God. “For some have impiously dared to divide the one God in their teaching.” In other words, some have dared, through their words and in the manner I have just described, irreverently to divide the one God. “They foolishly and impiously teach that one god is the Creator and Master of souls, while another is the creator and master of bodies.”

He now returns to the same subject, but with a slight variation. Let me explain it. These matters may belong to the history of dogma, but they do not belong only to the past. They also concern our own age. Indeed, now that Eastern religions have made their way into the West, it is extremely useful for us to understand these things. What do Hinduism, all the Eastern religions, and indeed all the natural religions of the world teach? They are called natural because they are not given by revelation. They are human inventions, devised and fabricated by human beings. The very foundations of all these religions are man-made.

They teach that...

the god of souls is one god, while the god of bodies is another. Like the ancient Greeks and the Gnostics, they embrace a dualism. They regard bodies—that is, matter—as an eternal first principle, without beginning and without end. Here “principle” is used in the philosophical sense: matter, in its very nature and essence, is evil, while the soul, in its essence, is good. Thus there are two gods: the god who created the material universe and human bodies is an evil god...

an inferior god; while the god of spirits is the higher god, the good god. This, if you will allow me to put it rather simply, is the teaching of the dualists. Some modern philosophers are also dualists, and this is even more true of the Eastern religions. They tell you that you must destroy your body, or that your body has no value. Call it a prison, as Plato did; call it the source of evil and sin; say that it is of no importance. Christianity is profoundly different from all this. I scarcely need to tell you, because we proclaim it in all the prayers of our Church.

You have heard the phrase, taken from the Old Testament: “The God of the spirits and of all flesh.” The God of the spirits and of all flesh. This means that the same God is the Creator of both body and soul.

The body is not evil. And do you know why this distinction is made by those who consider themselves clever...

The Greek Fathers therefore make the following point. To remove every possible misunderstanding, they say, “The God of the spirits and of all flesh.” He is the God of both matter and spirit. Now listen to how Saint Cyril speaks about these things. But before I tell you, something has just come to mind.

This morning, a woman said something to me...

and the male members of her family may be present here. They would help her greatly—their mother and wife, to whom I said nothing—if they repeated to her what I am about to tell you. She said to me, “We are keeping Great Lent.”

“We did not defile ourselves by eating other foods—meat, for example.” Notice the verb she used: “We did not defile ourselves.” To defile means to make something unclean. My dear friends, pay attention: there are no defiled foods. A kind of Gnosticism lies beneath the surface among our people. A dualism lies beneath the surface. That is also why some regard Holy Matrimony as unclean. And so the Apostle emphasizes that Holy Matrimony is not unclean. This dualistic way of thinking is a terrible thing. But where does the real issue lie? If I eat meat now, during Lent, I have not defiled myself. I have simply disobeyed God’s commandment.

Obedience—it is entirely a matter of obedience. Would you like another example? Another lady spoke to me this morning about how we can eat one thing but not another. We say, for example, that you must not eat meat, but you may drink milk, as we do during Cheesefare Week. But let me give you an even clearer example. How can we say that we will not eat fish, yet we will eat fish roe? How can we say that we will eat olives, but not oil? My dear friends, something strange lies beneath this: the idea that the food itself will make me unclean—or, to use that first expression, that it will defile me.

For God’s sake, there are no defiled foods. “Every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be rejected.” That settles it. Then you may ask, “But do olives not contain oil?” I do not eat oil. The Church says: you will not eat oil, but you may eat olives. The Church could have said, “During Great Lent you will eat only meat, and no oil or olives at all.” What would fasting be then? Obedience. Do you hear what I am saying? The content, the very essence of fasting, is obedience, not the kind of food involved. Let us understand this. The Church says: you will not eat oil, but you may eat olives. That settles it.

The Church has said it, and that settles it. The Church has said it, and the matter is finished. Obedience to the Church—that is the end of it. That is all. We need not ask whether olives contain oil. Does corn not contain oil? That is where corn oil comes from. Do you know how much oil there is in corn, peanuts, and walnuts? What am I to do now—perform a chemical analysis of every food? That is foolish, very foolish. I say it once again: the issue is obedience, not the particular composition of one product of the earth or another. Let us continue.

Saint Cyril therefore refutes the belief held by some that there are two gods—the dualistic idea of one god of bodies and another god of souls. “For how can a man become the servant of two lords, when the Lord says in the Gospels, ‘No one can serve two masters’?” If we had two lords, two gods, how could a human being serve two masters? My body would belong to one god and my soul to another. But the Lord said that no one can serve two masters. Therefore there is one Master, one Lord, one God. “There is, then, only one God, the Maker of both souls and bodies.” There is one God, the Creator of both bodies and souls.

He is the God of both Holy Matrimony and virginity. There is one God who established both. Everything is His. Everything belongs to Him. If a person can place himself in the right relationship with this truth, he is truly set free—truly. He experiences the freedom of adoption: God is my Father; He loves me; I belong entirely to Him; everything belongs to Him; and I dwell within His love, His goodness, and His wisdom. “There is one Creator of heaven and earth, the Maker of angels and archangels.” Heaven and earth refer to material bodies, while the angels are spirits. There is one Creator of both spirit and matter. “The Creator of many things, yet the pre-eternal Father of only One.”

Of only One: His only-begotten Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, through whom He made all things, visible and invisible. There is one Son of God, the Word (Logos), through whom He created everything—both what can be seen and what cannot be seen, both spirits and matter. I will not analyze this any further, because it will be treated at great length later, when Saint Cyril speaks about the Son of God. “This is the Father of the Lord Jesus Christ.” He is the Father of the Lord Jesus Christ. “He is not confined within any place.”

Nor is He smaller than heaven. He is not confined within a particular place. To be “confined” means to be circumscribed. Pay attention: not in the literary sense, but in the geometrical sense of the word. To be circumscribed means to have boundaries—limits. That is what the word means here. We say that God is boundless. What does “boundless” mean? Not in the ordinary sense in which we say that someone speaks vaguely and throws out disconnected words. It means that God cannot be bounded or defined.

He cannot be defined. He has no boundaries; He is not circumscribed.

Furthermore, He is not smaller than heaven. God is outside the universe and within the universe by His presence, but not in His essence. Pay close attention. God is not standing outside the universe and merely looking at it. At this moment, I am outside you and looking at you. I can see you, but I am not beside you or within you; I am at a distance. God is not outside the universe merely looking in. We say that God is present everywhere, meaning that He is present at every point in space. But He is present by His presence, not in His essence. The divine essence has nothing in common with the essence of the world or of matter.

Nothing prevents God from being present within His creation. When we say that He is outside creation, we mean that the divine essence has nothing in common with the essence of His creation.

How does Saint Cyril express this? “The heavens are the works of His fingers, and the whole earth is held in His grasp.” Everything is in His hand—in His grasp, in the palm of His hand. God holds everything. “Thus He is in all things.” You see, I anticipated the interpretation that you understood from the beginning, and now the text itself says: “Thus He is in all things and outside all things.” He is within everything and outside everything. God is present even in the smallest atom of matter and the smallest living cell, yet at the same time He is outside them. “Outside” does not mean that He stands outside and merely looks on.

As I said before, He is truly within them.

He is said to be outside them because the divine essence has nothing in common with the essence of created things. “Do not imagine Him to be brighter than the sun, or equal to it.” Do not imagine that He is merely brighter than the sun or equal to the sun in brightness. Here the priest offers a rebuke. You know that Freemasons—why mince words?—are Masons. You know that they act in the name of philosophy, yet they are the most unwise of men, the most unwise, because everything they worship and devise is a human invention, not revelation. What a thing it is for someone to abandon God’s revelation and fall into the chaos of human invention.

They try to invent something of their own. What a fall! What degradation! And of course, what the Apostle Paul says in the first chapter of Romans applies to them. They were given over, he says, to their gods. God permitted them to worship created things—animals and birds—and to regard them as gods.

My dear friends, the Freemasons regard the sun as God. The sun is God. They speak of the Great Architect of the Universe—the Great Architect of the Universe. In other words, they do not accept a transcendent God who is beyond matter, but an immanent god within the world. To put it in the language of the Stoics: nature creates, sustains, and renews itself. For what is the sun? It is nature; it is a created thing. If the sun warms me, gives me life, ripens things, and makes the seeds sprout, then this is sheer idolatry—the worship of vegetation and the worship of life. That is what Freemasonry is.

It means—it means, as I say once again—that creation causes itself to grow, heals itself, and sustains itself. It is a closed circle. There is nothing beyond the world.

Wretched and unphilosophical people, even though they claim to proceed through philosophical thought and regard Christians as profane—indeed, they regard everything outside their own circle as profane. Wretched, wretched people. Why am I telling you this? Not because I take pleasure in attacking them, but so that you who are present, my dear friends, may not be placed in danger. If even one soul is led astray by Freemasonry—even one soul—the loss is great.

“For the One who made the sun must Himself be incomparably greater and brighter.” Clearly, the One who made the sun is far greater and brighter than the sun. “He foreknows the things to come and is mightier than all.” God knows the future and is mightier than everything. Why does God know the future? Because He is outside time. Everything that will happen takes place within time. Since God is outside time, He knows what is to come. That is why prophecy belongs to God alone and to no created being.

“He knows all things and does whatever He wills.” He knows everything and acts as He wills. Some people ask, for example, “What does God create?” Whatever He wills—whatever He wills. A verse from the Psalms says, “He made all things that He willed.” Is God able to do something evil, contrary, or different? Of course He has the power, as I read to you. But He did only what He willed—whatever He chose to do. This is a very important point. “He is not subject to the succession of events, nor to generation, nor to chance, nor to fate.”

I would say the following. I will not go into a detailed analysis, but will mention just one point here: the question of chance, fate, and so forth. Do you know what it means when I say that I believe in chance? Someone said to me this morning, “I believe in chance.” I answered him as I will now answer you. To believe in chance means to believe that there is some corner of the universe where God does not govern, but another power governs—a power with no consciousness of itself, called chance. And this power governs me. Is there any place in the universe where God is not present?

For the theology of everything we have said has very practical consequences. Brothers and sisters, if we believe that God is everywhere present and also beyond all things, and that not even a sparrow falls without God knowing it, then there is no such thing as chance. And if chance does not exist, then, let me tell you, we will not buy lottery tickets either.

Yes, we will not buy lottery tickets either. Indeed, it is a sin to buy lottery tickets, or to take part in anything based on gambling and chance. So please, let us pay attention to this. “Perfect in all things.” God is perfect in everything, possessing every form of virtue in equal measure, neither diminishing—and there I stopped.

Can we say, for example, that God’s justice can increase or decrease, or that His goodness can increase or decrease? These are unchanging. “But He always remains the same and unchanged, having prepared Hell for sinners and crowns for the righteous. Since many have wandered away from the one God in various ways, some have made the sun into a god.” This is what I was telling you about the Freemasons. “So that when the sun sets at night, they are left without a god.” There is irony here as well. You believe that the sun is God.

Well then, when the sun sets, during the night you are left without God—that is, you become an atheist. “Others made gods of the other parts of the world”; others, he says, deified other parts of the world. “Others deified the arts.” Apollo was the god of light and music, and so forth. Athena was Wisdom, the goddess of wisdom. Some deified the arts; others, food: Demeter, Cybele in Asia Minor, and Isis in Egypt. Others deified pleasures, as with the goddess Aphrodite; and some, obsessed with women...

“These foolish men, consumed by lust for women, raised up the image of a naked woman, called her Aphrodite, and through what they saw worshipped the passion itself.” These foolish men, obsessed with women, set up the statue of Aphrodite and worshipped the goddess Aphrodite. “Others, astonished by the brilliance of gold, made gods of it and of other kinds of matter.” They saw the brilliance of gold and how it does not corrode, and they worshipped gold and every kind of material thing. It is significant that God commands us not to worship anything beneath the earth or anything upon its surface. Beneath the surface are the metals; upon the surface are the trees and the animals.

Above the earth’s surface are the heavenly bodies: the stars, the sun, and the moon. “But if someone lays the teaching of the sole sovereignty of God as a foundation in his heart and believes it, he cuts off at once the whole onrush of evil—the error both of idolatry and of the heretics.” Whoever, he says, lays it as a foundation in his heart and believes that God is one leaves no room to fall either into idolatry or into any heretical error. This knowledge of God is foundational.

Indeed: “Lay by faith this first dogma of piety as a foundation in your soul.” See to this carefully. It is the first dogma. You must establish it within your soul. Notice the little phrase that ends the paragraph: “by faith.” Do not ask for proofs. It is what I told you at the beginning. You will establish it by faith.

How do we know that a theory someone has constructed is correct? By whether it proves what it sets out to prove. What, then, is a theory—a scientific theory? It is a scientific creed, something scientifically believed. My dear friends, faith comes first, and knowledge follows. Once I accept God, knowledge of God immediately begins to pour forth like a fountain. And the important thing is that this overflowing knowledge of God is not merely theoretical. It begins as theory. What we have said, for example, may for the moment be called theoretical. We have made a theoretical analysis. But do you know what happens to me afterward—and you will remember my words? An experience begins.

Then do you know what you will say in your life? Truly, God is one. Truly, God is just. Truly, God is good. Truly, God sees all things. Truly, God is great. Do I believe? No—not merely. Now I know God, and with all my heart and with all the powers of my being, I glorify Him and give thanks to Him.

Γι' αυτό το λόγο αναφέρεται... λίγα λόγια σε αυτά τα δέκα δόγματα και φυσικά και εμείς θα προσπαθήσουμε να δώσουμε πολύ έτσι σύντομη ανάλυση και χαρακτηριστική αυτών των δέκα δογμάτων, διότι παρακάτω πράγματι θα μας κάνει μεγαλύτερη, περισσότερη ανάλυση. Βέβαια, ο Άγιος Κύριλλος έχει υπόψη του κατηχουμένους, δηλαδή ανθρώπους οι οποίοι είναι έτοιμοι να δεχθούν τον Χριστό και επίκειται η βάπτισή των. Θα μπορούσαμε να είπουμε ότι αυτά τα οποία θα αναλύσουμε θα μπορούσαν να σταθούν χρήσιμα και για έναν τυπικώς άθεον. Όταν εδώ ομιλεί περί Θεού ο Άγιος Κύριλλος;

Ναι.

Βιβιτήριο Εισάγει δύο θεούς, καταρχάς, και είναι εδώ αμέσως διάσπαση της μονοθεΐας, δηλαδή καταστροφή του Χριστιανισμού. Ο Θεός, λέγει, είναι και δίκαιος και αγαθός, ο ίδιος, το ίδιο πρόσωπο. Μάλιστα, ο Άγιος Κύριλος — πολύ θα αργήσουμε να φτάσουμε, δεν ξέρω, πολύ θα αργήσουμε να φτάσουμε — λέει το εξής: Τι λες; Ότι ο Θεός στην Παλαιά Διαθήκη είναι εκδικητικός, θεοζηλωτής, είναι πυρ καταναλίσκον, πυρ καταναλίσκον; Τι λες; Ότι ο Θεός στην Καινή Διαθήκη είναι αγαθός; Δεν άκουσες τι λέει ο Χριστός;

Είχα να λέγα τα εξής. Δεν θα κάνω ιδιαίτερη ανάλυση, παρά μόνο ένα σημείο εδώ. Το θέμα της τύχης, ειμαρμένης κτλ. Ξέρετε τι είναι; Όταν λέγω ότι πιστεύω στην τύχη... Μου έλεγε πρωινόν κάποιος: «Πιστεύω στην τύχη», μου λέει. Του απήντησα αυτό που θα σας πω τώρα και εσάς. Πιστεύω στην τύχη σημαίνει πιστεύω ότι υπάρχει μια γωνιά του σύμπαντος που εκεί δεν κυβερνάει ο Θεός, αλλά κυβερνάει μια άλλη δύναμη, η οποία δεν έχει συνείδηση του εαυτού της και λέγεται τύχη. Αυτή με κυβερνά. Υπάρχει σημείο του σύμπαντος που να μην είναι παρών ο Θεός;
