Summary

Saint Cyril’s fourth catechetical lecture presents the foundational doctrines that candidates for baptism must retain during their forty-day preparation. The lecturer distinguishes philosophy that rejects revealed truth from the legitimate theological interpretation of given realities, including history understood through Scripture. True godliness unites orthodox doctrine with good works, since neither correct belief without virtue nor moral conduct without true faith is acceptable to God.

My beloved, we have come to the fourth catechetical lecture of Saint Cyril of Jerusalem. This lecture bears the following title: “A Lecture Prepared for Those Being Illumined in Jerusalem, Concerning the Ten Doctrines.” And the reading is from the Epistle to the Colossians: “Take heed lest anyone carry you off as spoil through philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elements of the world,” and so forth. In other words, this is a catechetical lecture addressed to those being illumined, those awaiting Baptism, which was prepared and delivered in Jerusalem.

Its subject is the ten doctrines. It takes its starting point from the reading in the Epistle to the Colossians, chapter two, verse eight: “Take heed”—be careful, the Apostle tells the Colossians—“lest anyone carry you off as spoil through philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elements of the world, and not according to Christ.” In other words, take care that no one plunders you and takes you captive through philosophy and empty deceit,

through human tradition and according to the elements of this world, rather than according to Christ.

Thank you. After this passage had been read, Saint Cyril began his exposition. He first gives a very brief introduction, which we shall examine. He tells us that he will speak about ten doctrines because the subject is extensive, while the time available is only forty days—that is, at that time, the duration of Lent. So that you will not forget everything we shall discuss, all these catechetical lectures,

so that you will not forget these lectures and their contents, I shall give you the principal points, which we shall then examine. In this way you will first have an overall picture, and afterward we shall analyze each point individually. These points concern the soul, the body, food, clothing, the Resurrection of the dead,

the washing of Baptism, and Holy Scripture—that is, the books of the New Testament and the Old Testament, and so forth. He will discuss all these things very briefly. Now, all the catechetical lectures of Saint Cyril revolve around the interpretation of the Creed. Remember that the Creed was still recent at that time; these lectures were written around the year 350. Bear in mind that the First Ecumenical Council took place in 325. This was therefore only twenty-five years after the formulation of the Creed—not yet with all its articles,

but in what concerned Christ, because they had to combat Arianism. Yet you should not imagine that creeds had not existed before then. We have several creeds that circulated among the local Churches. The Nicene Creed was simply established from that point onward as the Creed for all the Churches. Until then, however, each local Church had its own creed. Do you know the oldest creed found in Holy Scripture? It appears in the question Philip the Deacon asked the Ethiopian eunuch. The eunuch said, “What prevents me from being baptized?” As they traveled along the road, he saw water at a certain place. Philip replied, “Nothing prevents you. Do you believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God?” And the eunuch answered, “I believe.” Then they went down from the chariot, and he was baptized. You see that before a candidate is baptized and enters the Church, he recites the Creed. If the person being baptized is an infant, the sponsor recites it on the child’s behalf. What do we have here? A creed. Why is it so brief? Because heresies had not yet arisen to unsettle the doctrines, and nothing more was required than faith in the name of Jesus Christ. Nothing else.

As the life of the Church unfolded, heretics introduced new things—that is, they troubled the Church with new positions and interpretations. Then, to safeguard the faith, the Church had to expand her Creed. Even before the Nicene Creed, we have what is known as the Jerusalem Creed. In its expressions and even in its wording, it is almost the same as the Nicene Creed. The only difference is that where it speaks of the Resurrection of the dead—we say, “I believe in and await the resurrection of the dead”—the Jerusalem Creed says, “I await the resurrection of dead bodies.”

This is more explicit and perhaps even better. We also have the Athanasian Creed, which is very extensive. It begins with faith in the Holy Trinity, in the Triune God; it then proceeds to the doctrine of the Incarnation, the doctrine of the Church, Baptism, and the expectation of the Resurrection of the dead and the life of the age to come. You may ask, “Are there no other doctrines?” Of course there are. But because those doctrines had not been attacked, or because they depend upon these fundamental and foundational doctrines, they were not included in the established Creed.

Saint Justin Popovich says: “Do you want to see whether you are truly Orthodox? Take the Creed, study it carefully point by point, and see whether you accept what it contains. Then you will understand; then you will know whether you are Orthodox.” Yet we might say that there are a great many matters which, at least at first glance, do not appear to depend upon the Creed. But they do; they certainly do. Consider the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist. You see that the Mysteries are not discussed in the Creed. The Mystery of the Holy Eucharist is not mentioned explicitly, but it is present implicitly. Once you confess that Jesus Christ is the Son of God—

“And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Only-Begotten, begotten of the Father before all ages; Light of Light, true God of true God,” and so forth—and once you believe that Jesus Christ is true God who became man, nothing further needs to be said to you about the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist. For who said that through the consecration the bread and wine become His Body and Blood? He who is true God said it. All further discussion is unnecessary. Christ said it, and that settles the matter. You see, then, that even the teachings not explicitly contained in the Creed unquestionably depend upon the great, foundational doctrines of faith contained within it.

What, then, does Saint Cyril wish to tell us here? We shall now proceed. I consider this fourth catechetical lecture extremely important because it presents many subjects in outline, under their principal headings. Therefore, as I told you last time, do not miss it. Let no one be absent, so that we may gain this overall picture. There is, of course, one difference: Saint Cyril delivered this lecture in a single session, whereas we shall cover it over many sessions. Let us begin. Paragraph one: “Evil imitates virtue, and the tares strive to be taken for wheat. In outward appearance they resemble the wheat, but by their taste they are exposed by those who possess discernment. And the devil transforms himself into an angel of light, not

in order to return to the place from which he fell—for his resolve is unrepentant, and he has made his heart as unyielding as an anvil—but in order to surround those who live a life equal to that of the angels with the darkness of spiritual blindness and the pestilential condition of unbelief. Many wolves go about in sheep’s clothing. They wear the fleece of sheep, but possess the claws and teeth of wolves. Clothed in the gentle hide and deceiving the innocent by their outward appearance, they pour from their teeth the deadly poison of ungodliness.”

“We therefore need divine grace, a sober understanding, and eyes that truly see, lest through ignorance we eat the tares as though they were wheat and suffer harm; lest we mistake the wolf for a sheep and become its prey; and lest we take the destructive devil for a good angel and be devoured. For, according to Scripture, ‘he prowls about like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.’ This is why the Church admonishes us, why she teaches what is set before us, and why the readings are appointed.” Saint Cyril wishes to tell us here that evil imitates virtue, and that the tares strive to be regarded as wheat. In other words, in this world where evil exists, it is entirely natural for evil to attempt by every means to corrupt what is good, and for falsehood to corrupt the truth. The devil is, we might say, the chief author of falsehood. And because he could no longer act against Christ in any other way—because he was crushed upon the Cross of Christ, literally crushed—he can henceforth advance and impose himself only through corruption and falsification. He tries to turn falsehood into truth, or to adulterate the truth so that it is not presented

in its fullness. This is why the reading I gave you from the Apostle Paul says, “Lest anyone carry you off as spoil”—lest anyone plunder you and take you captive through philosophy and empty deceit. Certainly. Some people attempt to argue that the philosophy meant here cannot be sound philosophy, which we unquestionably cannot condemn, since it can greatly assist man. Although I loved philosophy and still love it, I have my doubts and objections. I do indeed, and my objections are very serious. A person who is truly able to enter deeply into theology has no need of philosophy. Do you know what philosophy means? I shall not say much, but I shall point out the one thing I cannot accept. Philosophy is the attempt to discover truth while refusing to accept revealed truth. It is the search for truth without accepting the authority of revealed truth. And revealed truth is the Word of God. I set the Word of God aside and begin searching by myself. I try, for example, to explain how the universe came into being. It is not enough for me to learn this from—

theology; I must philosophize. I am not speaking about science. I am speaking about philosophy, which in fact often precedes science and opens the way for it, just as the reverse also happens: science opens the way for philosophy. A new scientific discovery opens new horizons for philosophy. Likewise philosophy usually goes ahead, opening paths for science, so that science begins to investigate wherever human thought—philosophy—has first ventured and asks, “Might I now discover something here?” If science ultimately finds nothing, philosophy moves away and goes farther on, looking for some other place where there may be hope of establishing something. Philosophy is therefore, we might say, the forerunner of science.

Can there be a philosopher who is not a scientist, or a scientific researcher who is not a philosopher? I do not know whether such a person could become a true scientist. It is that intuition arising within him which says, “If I strike here, I will find something.” An archaeologist, for example, may say, “I think this patch of earth reflects something beneath the surface.” He digs, and he finds it. This is precisely what it means: I begin to philosophize in order to see what I might use there and how I might proceed scientifically. But that is not what we are discussing. The danger arises when I insist upon philosophical frameworks and positions while revealed truth stands beside me, because in doing so I belittle revealed truth and give precedence to human reason,

rather than to the divine Word. That is the danger. It is in this sense that the Apostle Paul says, “Take care lest anyone deceive you, take you captive, and plunder you through philosophy and empty deceit.” Consider, for example, the existentialist philosophy of our own age. Consider the philosophy of Sartre. What is it? It is existentialism leading to nihilism. Why should I read Sartre and begin admiring him, when his teaching is nothing but nihilism, as I tell you, while on the other hand I possess the existential vision of the Gospel? What does existentialism mean? It means studying human existence, not as I might conceive it for myself, but as God reveals it to me.

As you know, the key to understanding human existence—the key to Christian existentialism—is that man is created in the image of God. That is the key. In this sense, I have no need of philosophy. Indeed, philosophy understood in this way is dangerous—extremely dangerous. There is, however, another meaning of philosophy, and in this sense the term was often used even by the Fathers of our Church. Monasticism itself was once regarded as the philosophical life. People would say, “I am going forth to philosophize,” meaning, “I am going to become a monk.” Look at the loftiness of that expression: “I am going forth to philosophize.” That is, I am going to become a monk. Now, what I am about to describe is this:

there is material already before me, and I try to investigate and understand it. I do not create the material; I seek to understand what already exists. In this sense, I would accept philosophy. I have a passage before me, a text, and I begin to explore it in depth. In that sense, as I delve deeply into the text, I may say that I am philosophizing upon it. I philosophize upon history—that is, I have the given facts and try to discover and interpret the events of history. Of course, I would not favor the word “philosophize.” I would prefer the word “theologize.” Why should I not use that word? I theologize upon history.

There is a university course called the history of philosophy, and another called the philosophy of history. The philosophy of history is very difficult: it means being able to philosophize about history. I would put it this way: to theologize about history. What will help me to do this? Taking the key from the Old Testament. From one point of view, the Old Testament is a kind of handbook. Philosophers would call it a “philosophy of history.”

A Christian would say, “It is a handbook of the theology of history.” When God, for example, punishes some action of the Hebrews, what does the Hebrew do? He interprets the punishment God brings upon them as the result of the people’s transgression of God’s commandment. “Why is God punishing us?” Because of this or that. “Why did we win the battle of Jericho—if we may call it a battle—yet lose the next battle, at another city that was much easier to conquer?” Joshua asks, “Why, Lord? We have also suffered so many deaths.” And God answers: “Because when I told you that no one was to take any coins from Jericho, the city you would conquer, since all the coins belonged to Me and were to be offerings dedicated to Me—was it you who fought? I fought. The coins are Mine,” says God. Yet someone was found

who had put some coins into his pocket. “Who is it, Lord?” “Gather everyone together, and I will show him to you.” It was Achan, the thief. What is all this, then? Is it not a theology of history? “Why did we lose, Lord?” It was a punishment. This is the theology of history. In this sense, what we might call a philosophy of history—or, better, a theology of history—is unquestionably acceptable. This is important. Of course, I hardly need tell you that if I am a materialist, I will interpret history materialistically. If I am an idealist, I will interpret history idealistically. And if I am a Christian, I will interpret history as a Christian. That is perfectly natural. I will interpret it according to the position from which I stand. Yet all these matters, my dear friends, are truly very dangerous.

Let me explain what I mean. Consider the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, which God planted in Paradise and told our first parents not to taste. What, then, are we to say about this tree? He planted two trees: this tree and the tree of life. Of course, there was nothing unusual about the trees themselves. They were ordinary, natural trees. It was the commandment that gave them their value and significance. Do you suppose those trees would have remained planted there forever, always inaccessible? My dear friends, no. Our first parents would have tasted from both trees. Do you know when? When God told them to. First, from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil,

and afterward, in due course, from the tree of life. Saint Theophilus of Antioch gives a most beautiful and deeply instructive analysis of this subject. It is wonderful. I am saving it for the next lesson with the children in the advanced catechism class, because this will be our subject. Our first parents were infants and were not yet capable of knowing good and evil. Let me give just one very brief example, without going into too much detail. Would you speak to your five- or ten-year-old child about the intimate matters of married life? Would you? Certainly not. Why? Because the child is immature

and unable to know good and evil. If a child learned certain things at such an early age, that knowledge could ultimately ruin the child. This does not mean, however, that the child will never learn about them. It means that a child cannot bear such knowledge yet. Our first parents were likewise in infancy—take note, in physical infancy, but also in spiritual infancy. Saint Theophilus of Antioch and Saint Irenaeus of Lyons, Bishop of Lyons, both speak of this. For this reason, the knowledge was being reserved for them

to know good and evil through eating the fruit of the tree. It was being reserved for them. The matter was therefore pedagogical in character; they were not absolutely forbidden ever to taste from it. They would come to know good and evil, though not merely in theory. God knows good and evil theoretically, but not through committing evil, for God cannot be tempted by evil. God is good. Then our first parents would also have eaten from the second tree, the tree of life, and would have remained immortal and incorruptible. The place given by God to these two trees has profound value and significance for human life—very profound indeed. But when something happens before its proper time,

it causes very great harm.

That is the reality—the one and only reality. As I have told you, therefore, knowledge of such matters is dangerous for those who lack maturity. Suppose someone already tends to imagine things about himself, perhaps believing that he is ill or becoming a hypochondriac. If he gets hold of a psychology book or begins reading books on psychology, he will become ill; he may even lose his mind. It is dangerous to place psychology books in the hands of someone with such tendencies and such ideas about himself. It is extremely dangerous. And so it goes. I want you to understand that knowledge can be dangerous. Yet it is also tremendously attractive—tremendously attractive. Do you know why? Because man

feels the power of his reason and the strength within himself, and he also experiences the pleasure of autonomy. All these things become a great trap for him. He does not wait for the proper time to receive knowledge; he wants to taste it before its time. And that is precisely where he is caught. So allow me to say this, because I have seen many people fall after tasting these fruits of knowledge prematurely: we lose nothing by not reading books of philosophy and psychology. We lose nothing. If someone reads them with the blessing, so to speak, of his spiritual father—and, if I may put it this way, with the approval of experts—then let him read them.

But it is better not to take such books into our hands, because we can indeed be harmed. What conclusion, my dear friends, should we draw from what we have said? The dreadful truth is that the devil tries to corrupt the authentic spirit. And do you know where, in this matter, I believe his greatest success lies? In corrupting the authority of Divine Revelation by setting against it the supposed authority of human reason. To put it another way, he mixes or adulterates the authority of the divine Word with what man “believes” or “wants,” with the authority of human reason. To mix together what God reveals and what man thinks—this is Satan’s greatest success. There have been periods when the devil managed to turn the Gospel into philosophy—to turn the Gospel into philosophy while still invoking the name of God. Do you know how dangerous this is? If, of course, I treat the Gospel rightly, then I theologize, as I said at the beginning. But if I begin to place the authority of my human reasoning

beside the authority of the divine Word, I have ruined everything. This is how we get the so-called Christian philosophers. The very expression is an oxymoron. Is there such a thing as Christian philosophy? That question has been asked; indeed, it is the title of a book written by a university professor.

Is there a philosophy of Christianity? Essentially, the phrase is an oxymoron, because one belongs to human reason and the other to the divine Word. Here again, I would prefer simply to say, “I theologize.” Whatever God reveals, that I will accept. Any attempt to process it with my own mind and begin performing intellectual acrobatics is dangerous. If we have arrived at so many varied presentations of the Gospel, this is the reason: we philosophize about Christianity. When, for example, we turn Christianity into sociology or a social system, what do you think has caused this? We philosophize about the Gospel. We take what suits our purposes and leave aside what does not. Since we are philosophizing, we merely take certain starting points and nothing more. Do you know what Hegel once said? “I need nothing from the Gospel except the idea that God can become man. I find that idea very beautiful and very important.” So said Hegel, the idealist. Thank you.

“I want nothing else from the Gospel,” he says. “This is what I want.” Others will say, “I want nothing from the Gospel except the teaching that the Gospel is love: love one another. I want nothing else. That is enough for me.” My dear friends, this is the deception: to take whatever I want and treat it philosophically. The devil has achieved this, and it is his greatest success against Christians. Accept this if you will. This is why Saint Cyril says that the devil strives to present evil as good and to transform himself into an angel of light. Certainly not because he has repented, for he cannot repent.

His purpose is to overthrow those who live a life equal to that of the angels. For this reason, “we have need of divine grace, a sober understanding, and eyes that see.” Notice these three points. We need the grace of God—that is, the authority of Heaven. I cannot make my own nous the authority. Neither my nous nor my reasoning is the authority. God alone is the authority. Second, we need a sober understanding. To be sober means to abstain from wine and therefore to have a clear mind. It means purity of mind.

Purity of mind does not mean sleeping for twelve hours, waking up in the morning, and having a clear head. A clear mind, my dear friends, is one that does not receive the fumes of the passions and sin. Third, Saint Cyril says, we need “eyes that see”—eyes capable of seeing. There are people who do not see. I assure you, most people do not see. What do they fail to see? They cannot distinguish what is crooked from what is straight. They simply do not see it. It is astonishing that they do not. Let me repeat these three things so that I do not forget them: the grace of God and the authority of Heaven; then a sober understanding, an understanding purified from the passions and sins;

and eyes that see. But if I am to see correctly, my eyes—that is, the eyes of my soul—must not be darkened by the passions and sins. If I look at everything lustfully, can I ever see rightly? If I look at everything with greed for money, can I ever see rightly? If, to speak generally, I look at things wickedly, can I ever enter into their deeper meaning? Never. You see, these are subtle and important matters. We now come to the second paragraph, where Saint Cyril says something very important: “For the way of godliness consists of these two things.” Please pay particular attention to this short statement, this brief paragraph.

“Pious doctrines and good works. Doctrines without good works are not acceptable to God, nor does God accept works performed without pious doctrines. For what profit is there in knowing the doctrines concerning God correctly while living shamefully in fornication? Or, again, what profit is there in living chastely while blaspheming impiously? Therefore, the learning of doctrines is a most precious possession.” I do not know where we ought to put up a sign bearing this saying of Saint Cyril, which we so greatly need today: “The learning of doctrines is a most precious possession.” The teaching of doctrines, he says, is a most precious possession. That is why Saint Cyril here speaks mainly about doctrines, without

speaking about matters of the spiritual life. What does he mean? The way of godliness consists of two things. If I am to be called a godly person, one who reveres God, two things are necessary. First, pious doctrines and good works. In other words, I believe rightly; I hold the right conviction. I have right belief. The Greek word doxa means opinion and comes from the verb doko, “to hold an opinion.” Right belief is Orthodoxy. That is what Orthodoxy means: I believe rightly, I hold the right faith, and I glorify God rightly. In other words, I accept

good works and a good life—what we might call orthopraxy. Orthodoxy and orthopraxy: these two things, Saint Cyril says, constitute godliness. And he explains: “Doctrines without good works are not acceptable to God.” Doctrines without a righteous life are not acceptable to God. “Nor does God accept works performed without pious doctrines.” What does this mean? “What profit is there,” he asks, “in knowing the doctrines concerning God well while living shamefully in fornication?” You may know the doctrines of the faith extremely well and yet, as he says, live shamefully in fornication. Or again,

What good is it to live chastely, to be a holy person in your way of life, yet blaspheme impiously by refusing to accept the doctrines of the faith? And there he says, “The teaching of the doctrines, then, is a most precious possession.” Beloved, pay attention. Many evils have accumulated because these two things have fallen out of balance. Here you see a balance: orthodoxy and right practice—right belief and right living. There is harmony between them. If this balance is lost, then of course we do not have true godliness. And I should tell you that there have been times when this balance was lacking. Sadly, as we know, whether in particular periods or in individual people, this balance and harmony are often absent.

There was a time when people placed all the emphasis on doctrine and neglected their spiritual life. They concerned themselves only with doctrinal matters. Unfortunately, this spirit persists even today among some who present themselves as zealots. They fixate on certain points but show little diligence in matters of the spiritual life. It is a strange thing. Someone will say, “As long as I establish this position, it does not matter if I even tell lies. Yes, I may tell lies, but that does not matter. I may resort to all sorts of methods—methods that are certainly not lawful—so long as I ultimately achieve what I want.” In other words, so long as the position that ought to be defended is upheld. What a strange thing. What a strange thing. Conversely,

You know, our age is indifferent to doctrine. It has completely pushed dogma aside and tells you: “What is the Gospel? My dear friends, the Gospel means loving your neighbor. It means being a moral and honest person. That is the Gospel.” This is wrong. Both extremes are wrong. The Gospel is that the Son of God became man and came to save us precisely by becoming man. In other words, His Incarnation is our salvation. Pay attention: His Incarnation is our salvation. It is not that I will be saved if I keep the commandments. Rather, if the Son of God had not become man, it would have been impossible for us to keep God’s commandments. I would have no salvation. My salvation...

My salvation rests on the fact that the Son of God became man. But will that alone save me? That is the doctrinal foundation: He rose from the dead, and so on. Yet I must become a participant in the sufferings of Christ—in His Cross, His Burial, and His Resurrection. I must participate sacramentally, or mystically, so that I may also participate ontologically, in the very reality of my being. In other words, I must die to my sins and rise spiritually, so that I may also rise ontologically, in my body, when He comes to judge—

when Christ judges the world—when Christ comes again to judge the world. This is the right understanding. Faith in the doctrines and a right way of life must go hand in hand. So if either one is missing, whichever it may be, then our Christian stance is not sound. And if one of them disappears entirely, that is worse still. Let me say it once again: in our time there is this tendency to do away with doctrine, and many evils come from it—many evils. Why do people today say, for example, “Ecumenism is good; we can mix everything together. What harm would there be? Do we not all believe in one God? Are they not human beings too?” And so the argument goes on and on.

“Are they not? Do we not believe in one God? We too believe in one God.” You see? As for the harm that Ecumenism can cause, I do not know whether one should keep repeating these things again and again. So these two—right doctrine and a right way of life—must go side by side. They are inseparable. That is why Father Florovsky says, “Please, teach the doctrines. Teach the doctrines,” he says to the priests and others. You see? Teach the doctrines. This is a matter of immense importance. I will repeat that wonderful passage from Saint Cyril: “The learning of the doctrines is a most precious possession, and it requires a watchful soul.”

There are many who carry people away through philosophy and empty deceit. The Greeks, for their part, lead them astray by their eloquence. How do the Greeks lead them astray? Take note: the term “Greek” has become a technical term, meaning someone who is not a Jew. More precisely, it means not simply a non-Jew, but a non-Jew who has cultivated his intellect. Thus the general designation “Greek” can include a Roman, an Alexandrian, an Egyptian, a Syrian, and so on, provided that he is an intellectual, an educated man. It is therefore a technical term denoting a cultivated person. And so, he says, the Greeks lead people astray...

with their eloquence. He also quotes a passage from Holy Scripture: “For honey drips from the lips of a prostitute.” Honey drips from the prostitute’s lips in order to lead people astray. In the same way, he says, honey drips from the lips of the Greek—that is, the educated man who has no God and is not a Christian. It is eloquence that leads people astray. Those of the circumcision are the Jews. Through the divine Scriptures—for they make use of the Scriptures—they deceive those who come to them, studying them from childhood to old age, yet growing old in ignorance. They too make use of the Scriptures, but they misinterpret them.

You may praise them for reading Holy Scripture from childhood to old age, yet in the end they grow old in ignorance. He condemns both cases.

Thank you. The followers of heretics deceive the hearts of the innocent through fair-sounding words and eloquence. And how do the heretics use this fair speech? Through their seemingly upright conduct—that is, through what appears to be a prudent way of life. I know what people say about the Millenarians: “Look how much patient endurance they have, how harmless they are. You drive them away, and they do not insult you,” and so on. But I do not know what they will do to us tomorrow, if one day they reveal their power. We shall suffer martyrdom at their hands. So, through their fair-sounding words...

Through eloquence—they speak fine words, mere words—they deceive the hearts of simple and guileless people, using the name of Christ like honey to conceal the venom of their ungodly doctrines. In other words, they use the name of Christ as honey—notice how beautifully this is expressed—to cover up the poisonous doctrines of the ungodly. Terrible! The Millennialists, as you have seen, speak about Christ, yet they do not believe that Christ is God. Concerning all of them together, the Lord says—He says of every one of them: “Take heed that no one leads you astray.” The same word applies to all of them, taken together.

The Lord says, “Take heed that no one among them leads you astray.” This is why the faith is taught and why interpretations and explanations of it are given within the Church. Another passage from the first paragraph, which I neglected to mention, puts it beautifully: “This is why the Church admonishes; this is why these present schools of instruction exist,” as we might say. What is this place where we are gathered, my beloved? It is a present school of instruction belonging to the Church. This is why the readings are given. What readings? The study of Holy Scripture. All this serves one purpose: to guard us against every such deception and enticement.

Before beginning the instruction in the faith, it seemed good to give a brief summary of the essential doctrines, so that the great number of things to be said, together with the days that pass during Holy Lent, might not cause those among you whose understanding is weaker to forget everything. By sowing these teachings now in outline, we will not forget them when they are cultivated more fully later. This is what I told you at the beginning, in the introduction. For this reason, he says, we shall give a brief summary. We shall set these things before you so that you will not forget them during Holy Lent, but will have an overall picture. This, my beloved,

This is a teaching method, an approach to instruction, and it is very important. Before a teacher, professor, preacher, speaker, or educator in general begins presenting a series of subjects, he should give a general overview of what he intends to say and explain the purpose of it. This is very important, very important indeed. If only teachers did this in every course, especially teachers in schools: “Children, we are going to study anthropology. Anthropology is the subject that...” and so on. “Its purpose is this, that, and the other.” All this should be presented not simply as a definition, but in such a way as to give, we might say, a broader picture.

so that it will also awaken the child’s interest and help the child know what is going to be learned. This is important! And what else does he say here? Look: “But so that”—this is another point—“but so that, for now, we may sow the seeds beneath the surface by presenting the main points.” What a beautiful expression! Indeed, the prefix meaning “beneath” gives the word such depth and beauty. “To sow beneath” means to plant seeds below the surface—that is, to sow the elementary ideas. This is very important in teaching, because when I give a few general ideas about a subject, the listener or student gains some knowledge of it, and it is no longer entirely unfamiliar.

Then, when we go into the details, the listener will not be entering completely unfamiliar territory. He will already have a general picture. When we take up the subject itself, we will examine it in detail. Saint Cyril says, “having sown beforehand.” To sow beforehand means to scatter a few seeds here and there—a few words here and there—so that the listener gains a rough, overall picture. In other words, he has some prior knowledge to which further knowledge can later be added. Let them bear with us.

Let the more advanced among those present bear patiently with these more elementary lessons and this introductory milk, since they have already acquired maturity and trained their spiritual senses to discern good from evil. In this way, those who need catechesis may be benefited, while those who already possess this knowledge may have their memory refreshed concerning the things they already know. So let those who understand easily be patient with those who do not understand so readily. And if some think they already know these things, this is an opportunity to learn them more deeply, to stir them up again within themselves, and to establish them firmly in their memory; while those who do not know them will have the opportunity to learn. I would say the same to you, my dear ones: here we speak of many things that we have said before.

As for the brothers and sisters who already know these things, that is no problem. We might say that in this way they can gain a better understanding, strengthen these things in their memory, or benefit simply by hearing them again. This knowledge cleanses them and makes them better. Such constant remembrance is a great thing. Those who do not know these things will hear them for the first time and learn them. In any case, everyone benefits greatly. I can see this in myself. I am giving you an explanation of these things. Do you think I do not benefit from it? I am the first to benefit. Indeed, I read them twice: once when I prepare what I am going to say to you...

...and once again when I speak about them to you here. So I benefit from this even more than you do, and I need it. I cannot say, “I have read these things, and I know them.” Woe to the person who says, “I know, I know.” We should never say, “I know, I know.” Here is one way to understand this: when someone tells us something we already know, let us listen to what he has to say. He may point out an aspect of the matter that we had not considered. Do you know what happened to me once, my dear friends? Listen to what happened. When I entered military service, among the things we had to learn from the sergeant or corporal—or, in the Air Force, from the corresponding ranks, since that is where I served—was how to fold our blanket. I rather foolishly thought, “What, do I not know how to fold a blanket?”

“Come on, can’t I fold a blanket at home? Are they really going to teach us how to fold blankets now?” So I paid no attention at all to how they folded the blanket. As you know, in the army they fold it in a rather particular way, but I did not see how it was done or pay any attention; I did not even look. I folded my blanket just as I used to fold it at home. Then came the inspection. The only blanket that was not properly folded was mine, and I was put through a punishment drill. From then on, I told myself: “Never say, ‘I know.’ Listen. There may be some aspect, some point of view, that you did not know.” In this world, the study of any subject is never exhausted.

Even in the simplest matters, listen and learn. It is also a matter of humility. And when we have humility, my dear friends, we learn many things, and what we learn is beneficial and becomes firmly rooted within us. We become wise; we become truly human, the kind of people God wants us to be. Beginning next Monday—it is a feast day, but that does not matter; in the morning we will attend the Divine Liturgy, and that is all—we will move on, after this brief introduction by Saint Cyril, to the subject of God. You will see how important it is, so that, with this general knowledge, we may understand and always interpret correctly whatever life presents to us.
