Summary
Saint Cyril explains that the Holy Spirit descended visibly at Christ’s baptism not for Jesus’ benefit, but to reveal the Messiah to John the Baptist. In baptism the Holy Spirit descends upon sincere believers, granting adoption by grace, whereas Christ is the eternal Son of God by nature. The lecture concludes that entry into Christianity requires repentance and acceptance of revealed truth, while dialogue serves only a pedagogical role rather than compromising the faith.

Beloved, we are now at the fourteenth paragraph of the third catechetical lecture of Saint Cyril, Bishop of Jerusalem.
Last time we covered the first three lines, and now we continue from where we left off. He says: “From that moment Jesus began”—that is, when the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in bodily form, like a dove. This did not happen so that Jesus Himself might be the first to see it, for He knew the Spirit even before He came in bodily form, but so that John, who was baptizing, might behold it. “For I,” John says, “did not know Him; but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining, this is He.’ If you too possess sincere reverence, the Holy Spirit will descend upon you as well, and the Father’s voice will resound from above—not, ‘This is My Son,’ but, ‘This man has now become My son.’ For of Christ it is said, ‘He is My Son,’ because ‘in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.’ Of Him it is said, ‘He is,’ because He is eternally the Son of God; but of you it is said, ‘He has now become.’ For you do not possess sonship by nature, but receive adoption by appointment. He is the eternal Son, while you receive grace through spiritual growth.” This is a beautiful passage, my beloved. It tells us that when the Lord was baptized—
the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form, like a dove. This was not so that Jesus might be the first to see Him. It was not for Jesus, but for John, so that John might see exactly what was taking place. For the One who told him to baptize—as John himself testifies—God Himself, had told him: “The One upon whom, as He is baptized, you see the Holy Spirit descending like a dove, He is the Messiah.” Thus John himself said: “Even I, brethren, did not know who He was. But the One who told me to baptize also gave me this sign.” The Holy Spirit, therefore, appeared visibly. As I have explained to you, this was not for Jesus, but for John. Saint Cyril now says that the Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus, though certainly not because there was ever a time when Jesus did not possess the Holy Spirit. Away with such blasphemy! Rather, Jesus performs these works through His human nature, opening the way for mankind, since He took human nature from us. He assumed human nature. Could you imagine that Jesus Christ ever lacked divine glory? Even as man, He possessed divine glory.
John the Evangelist says, “For the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.” Had Jesus truly not yet been glorified? That glory concerned only the outward manifestation of things. Away with such blasphemy! Jesus was never deprived of divine glory. When Scripture says that He “emptied Himself,” this does not mean that He emptied Himself of His divinity—an unthinkable notion, for then His divinity would have been taken away—nor that He emptied Himself of divine glory. Jesus was never separated from divine glory. This is the first proof that the Evangelist John’s words, “not yet glorified,” refer only to the outward manifestation of things.
The Transfiguration took place before this was said of Jesus, even though the words refer to a time after His Resurrection. Yet at the Transfiguration He had already revealed His divine glory. This shows that Jesus Christ always possessed His divine glory and was never separated from it. As you know, divine glory—that is, the divine uncreated energies—flows from the divine essence. It is impossible, therefore, to possess the divine uncreated energies without the divine essence. The divine essence is present in Jesus as well—He is the infinite God, a mystery beyond comprehension—and at the same time so is divine glory, the divine uncreated energies, inseparable from God the Word (Logos),
inseparable even from His human nature. Scripture says that He “emptied Himself”—the word refers to being made empty—but this does not mean an actual emptying. It means a concealing. When the sky is cloudy, the sun does not disappear; it simply cannot be seen. In the same way, Christ concealed His glory according to the divine economy. He concealed it for the sake of our salvation. One principal reason He concealed His divine glory, always according to the divine economy, was to allow faith to develop freely—take careful note of this point. For if He had appeared to everyone as He appeared to His disciples on Mount Tabor, my beloved, who could have remained an unbeliever? But then we would no longer be speaking of faith, but of compulsion.
Saint Theophilus of Antioch makes a beautiful observation on this point. He says: “You wish to see and then believe? But if you see, you will be forced to accept it whether you wish to or not. That is no longer called faith; it is called knowledge. And this demand for proof through sight leads you to unbelief, not to faith; it shows you to be an unbeliever.” After all, why would I question whether one plus one equals two? One plus one equals two. There is no question of unbelief. Whether you like it or not, you must accept it. If, then, the Lord had appeared in His divine glory and had not concealed it according to the divine economy, faith could never have developed, my beloved.
It would have overwhelmed man’s free will. Man would have had no room to choose freely, just as he has no room to choose and say, “I refuse to accept that one plus one equals two.” Anyone who claims that one plus one does not equal two is insane; he is not operating by the ordinary laws of reason. You may ask, then: Was it necessary for faith to develop? Yes, indeed, because God uses the same means to lead us into Paradise. What means are these? Listen. God said to our first-formed ancestors: “You shall not eat from the fruit of this tree, because when you eat from it—on the very day you eat from it—you shall die.”
“On the day that you eat of it, you shall surely die.” This was a matter of faith, because our first-formed ancestors had never seen death. They did not know what death was. And bear in mind—do not be surprised, for Saint John of Damascus says this—that there were no animals in Paradise through whose death the first-formed man might have learned what death was. You may ask, did animals die? Yes, but this is not the time to examine the matter further. Saint John of Damascus says that in Paradise there was “nothing irrational.” God led the animals into Paradise so that Adam, as he named them, might realize that among them there was no creature like himself. I tell you—
Adam had never seen death. Certainly, among human beings, whose death could he have seen first? Nor had Adam seen death among the animals. Adam did not know death. He therefore had to believe. The path of his salvation was faith: “If I transgress God’s commandment, I shall die.” Or he might have said to himself: “I shall die? I do not know. What does it even mean to die?” Something so familiar to us was utterly unknown to Adam. “What does it mean to die? I do not know. I know only one thing: God told me that I would die. Since God has said it, I believe it.” Adam did not believe. But God persists: “I grant you the grace to restore Paradise and place you within it once again.”
God insists that the way by which you enter will remain the same. God does not revoke or alter His plan. And what is that way? Faith. And now, in whom will you believe? In the person of Jesus Christ. That is the heart of the matter. Christ therefore appeared without manifesting His divine glory; He concealed it, He kept it hidden. I will tell you something more: He concealed His divine glory even from the angels, because the angels too had to believe. Do not forget that Christ is also the Savior of the angels. By believing in the person of Jesus Christ, the angels made what we might call their final act of faith.
They had also believed all that had come before. The devil did not believe, and that is why he became the devil. Tomorrow we celebrate the feast of the Holy Angels; I mention this because of that occasion. And so, my beloved, the angels became firmly established in virtue. Take care: this does not mean that they are incapable of sinning, but that they have been established in virtue and do not desire to sin. Since the Theotokos (God-bearer) brought Christ into the world, the presence of the Theotokos confirmed the Holy Angels in virtue, as Cabasilas, Saint John of Damascus, and others also teach. This is a very significant point. But let me return to the subject and not wander too far. You see, I have broadened the discussion a little, but that does no harm. Christ concealed His divine glory.
The same path of salvation had to remain: faith. Saint Cyril therefore says: “If you too possess sincere reverence.” In other words, if you approached Baptism with sincere reverence. Let me repeat his words: “If you too possess sincere reverence.” “Sincere” means that you truly believe what you say you believe, without hypocrisy. “The Holy Spirit will descend upon you as well.” The Holy Spirit will descend upon you just as He descended upon Jesus. And He did not descend upon Jesus for Jesus’ sake; He descended upon Jesus for your sake.
This is a great mystery. In other words, my beloved, in Baptism we receive the Holy Spirit. Have you ever reflected on that? Then what is Chrismation? Is that not where the Holy Spirit descends? No. On the day of Pentecost we see two things: first, the descent of the Holy Spirit, and second, the gifts of the Holy Spirit. First comes the descent, and then come the gifts. We might say that the Holy Spirit comes with His hands full. In Baptism we have the descent of the Holy Spirit, and further on we shall see what this means. In the Mystery of Chrismation, however, we receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
There we say, “The seal of the gift of the Holy Spirit.” This is a great mystery. Have you truly considered that we receive the Spirit of God?
“The Father’s voice resounds to you from above.” To you also the Father’s voice is given from above, and it resounds, saying: “This is My beloved Son.” But concerning you it says, “This man has now become My son.” What did the Spirit say—or rather, what did the Father say—when the Holy Spirit appeared upon Jesus and John heard the voice? “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” The Holy Spirit will not come to you and say, “You are My beloved Son.” Rather, He will say to you—I am reading the exact phrase—“In your case, it is said: ‘He has now become.’”
Forgive me; the phrase is: “But this man has now become My son.” What is the difference? It is tremendous. Of the Son, the Father says, “He is My Son,” because the Son is Son by nature. Saint Cyril expresses this beautifully: “In the beginning was the Word.” When creation had its beginning, the Word already existed; the Word was eternally with God, and the Word was God—“and the Word was God”—the second person of the Holy Trinity. Therefore, when God the Father said, “This is My Son,” He meant: My Son by nature, Son according to His very nature. We possess the same nature, the same essence. But when you are baptized and the Holy Spirit descends upon you, God says to you: “Now you have become My child.” You were not so before. Whatever comes into being is created, not uncreated, for the verb “to become” indicates change. Therefore, when you become a son of God, you become one because you are subject to change—that is, because you are a creature. You are not from the essence of God. What, then, are you here? You are a son of God by grace, and therefore by adoption.
This is the first, the greatest, the immense gift brought by the Holy Spirit when He descends upon each person who is baptized: that person becomes a child of God by grace.
“Christ is always the Son of God; but in your case it is said, ‘He has now become,’ because you do not possess sonship by nature”—let me make sure I read the text correctly when you renew your attention—“but by appointment you receive adoption. He is eternal, while you receive grace through spiritual growth.” This word “growth” requires some explanation. There once arose a heresy, and it is good for you to know about it, because, as you know, there is nothing new under the sun. You may be certain that every heresy that has appeared or still appears has some precedent. This heresy taught that the Son became God through advancement.
According to this heresy, He struggled, advanced in holiness, and was thus acknowledged by the Father as Son. Blasphemy! Dreadful blasphemy, my beloved—truly dreadful blasphemy! Why is it blasphemy? Because this heresy regards the Son merely as a man and denies that He possesses the nature and essence of the Father. It is terrible blasphemy and a denial of the Holy Trinity. There is no greater blasphemy than denying the Holy Trinity. Christ, the Son of God, is not God through advancement, but by nature. It is I, a human being, who become god by spiritual advancement.
For us human beings, it is by progress—that is, I will labor, work, and struggle to become a child of God, to prove myself a worthy child of God, and to make full use of the adoption I receive on the day of my Baptism. And so, my dear friends, the day of our Baptism is a very great day. I have told you before that our true birth takes place in the baptismal font. Our true womb is not our mother’s womb, but the womb of the font, the womb of Baptism. From there we emerged; there we were brought forth and born anew. That is why we do not celebrate the day of our natural birth—our birthday. The celebration of birthdays is unknown in our Church. Rather, we celebrate the day on which we came forth from the baptismal font,
and received the name given to us there, at our Baptism. That is a great day. So I will tell you again: when you celebrate your name day, you may certainly prepare a meal and receive visitors—I am not forbidding you. But take care: if it is a fast day and you serve foods from which we are fasting, you will grieve God. Your name day may fall during Great Lent, or on a Wednesday or Friday. Be careful; I consider this a serious matter. Serve food prepared with oil if oil is permitted, or without oil if it is not. You may simply offer a modest sweet.
There are also fasting foods, some prepared with oil—and there are many possibilities—and others without oil. Or, at the very least, serve the meal later. If your name day falls on a Wednesday or Friday, tell your guests, “I am moving my celebration to Sunday. Come then, and I will prepare a meal for you,” perhaps for five or ten people. I repeat: let us not provoke God by setting a table with foods from which we are fasting. So I return to my point and tell you that, if you wish, you may certainly hold such a meal. A meal is a feast and a cause for gladness; it is not sinful, provided, of course, that nothing sinful is involved. Nor should we turn it into wild revelry, with songs, dancing, and carousing—God forbid—but into something dignified. When your name day is approaching, prepare to receive Holy Communion.
Prepare yourselves and do whatever is required. Fast, go to Holy Confession, and so forth. We should receive Holy Communion on the day we celebrate. In this way we show that we honor the Saint whose name we received, that we desire to imitate that Saint’s life, that we too wish to become spiritual strugglers, and that we are making full use of the adoption we received on the day of our Baptism. Please acquire this habit. Many times, especially with children, I hear that they prepared for their name day and so forth. “Did you receive Holy Communion?” The thought never even occurred to them. “Did you receive Holy Communion?” For us, that question should be extremely important. And now we come to the fifteenth paragraph. Let us listen.
“Prepare the vessel of your soul, that you may become a son of God, an heir of God, and a co-heir with Christ—provided that you prepare yourself to receive, that you approach in faith so as to become faithful, and that of your own free choice you put off the old man.” Therefore, prepare yourself; prepare the vessel, the receptacle of your soul, so that you may become a child of God, an heir of God, and a co-heir with Christ. Christ is the Son by nature, while in regard to His human nature we are co-heirs with Christ.
Of course, you prepare yourself in order to receive this. “If you approach in faith, so as to become faithful.” If you approach in faith. Pay attention here: the Greek word used for “become faithful” has nothing to do with receiving a certificate, although at its root there is a connection. It means that I become a believer; I am made faithful. Just as one may say, “I am made godlike” or “I am made Christlike,” so one may say, “I am made faithful.” Thus, it means that I become a believer. Notice this word: I am made faithful; I become a believer. It is a very important word, and we may place it beside similar expressions used abundantly by
Saint Ignatius of Antioch and Saint Dionysius
of Olympus—not our Mount Olympus, but the one in Asia Minor. This is an ancient usage, and he employs many expressions of this kind. I mention this simply as a matter of language. Saint Justin Popovich gathered many such words and regularly uses them throughout his books: “I am made Christlike,” “I am made godlike,” and so on—including “I am made faithful.” Perhaps this particular word has not received much attention, but it is very beautiful. What, then, does it mean to be made faithful? It means to become a believer. “For everything you have done will be forgiven you, whether fornication, adultery, or any other such form of immorality.”
Whatever you have committed up to this point, if you repent and are baptized, will all be forgiven. Whatever sin you may have committed—whatever it may be—all will be forgiven. “What could be greater than crucifying Christ? Yet even this is cleansed by Baptism.” What could be worse than crucifying Christ? Saint Cyril is referring to those who actually crucified Him at that time—not merely the few who took part in nailing Christ to the Cross, but also all those who cried out, “Away with Him! Away with Him! Crucify Him!” You know that in modern Greek the expression “aron aron,” which of course comes from Holy Scripture, has declined into an expression meaning “very quickly.”
Someone may say, “They picked him up aron aron,” meaning that they took him away quickly. But that is not the meaning here. The word aron comes from a verb meaning “to lift up,” but it can also mean “to do away with” or “to kill.” Thus, “Away with Him!” means, “Kill Him!” “Away with Him! Away with Him! Crucify Him!” means, “Get rid of Him! Take Him away! Kill Him! Kill Him! Crucify Him!” That is the meaning of the cry. Who, then, were those shouting these words? There were certainly many of them. All were guilty of the Cross of Christ—directly and immediately guilty of the condemnation of Jesus Christ. When the Apostle Peter said,
“He whom you killed”—how dreadful! “You killed Him!” To whom did he say this? To the crowd listening to him on the day of Pentecost. You! Who are “you”? All of you listening to me. You killed Him. God raised Him from the dead and revealed Him to be true God. Then they asked, “What must we do to be saved?” And the Apostle Peter replied, “Repent.” They repented, were baptized, and were saved. This is what Saint Cyril is saying here.
Let me read again the passage I just mentioned.
“What could be greater than crucifying Christ? Yet even this is cleansed by Baptism. For Peter said to the three thousand who came forward”—to those who had crucified the Lord and were asking the Apostles, seeking to learn—“What shall we do, brethren?” “For great is the wound.” The wound was great. What a terrible murder: to become a killer of God—a killer of God! “You have made us recognize our fall, O Peter.” What had he told them? “You killed the Author of life.” The Apostle Peter told them, “You killed the Author of life.” “What remedy is there for so great a wound?” What medicine can be applied to such a terrible wound, to such a great sin?
“What cleansing is there for such defilement? What salvation is there from such destruction?” “Repent,” he said, “and let every one of you be baptized in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” Repent. It is metanoia, repentance. Regarding this matter of repentance, my dear friends, we now see a second characteristic of Holy Baptism: the forgiveness of sins. The first is adoption; the second is the forgiveness of sins. I would like to say something about this. I will not discuss it at length, but I will speak briefly.
There are people who wish to establish a dialogue with Christianity. First among them are the heretical West: the Protestants in the so-called World Council of Churches, and the Roman Catholics. For years upon years they talk and talk, holding dialogue after dialogue. What are we trying to discover? The matter is very simple. If the Protestant or Roman Catholic West desires to know the truth, dialogues are unnecessary. Repent!
Come to Orthodoxy. That is all! The way is simple: it is repentance. The World Council of Churches has been strongly criticized, and do not imagine that this is something of no concern to us all. As time passes, it brings corruption into Orthodoxy, because those who go there are subjected to this corruption. It is a tragedy that, despite so many semi-official, unofficial, and official outcries, we have still not understood this. It is a terrible corruption. But this is not the only thing. Recently there has also arisen what is called a new Orthodox movement.
That description is not my own; it has appeared in certain journals. I already said something about it last Monday during the question period. It is nothing other than an effort by certain theologians and clergymen—called “progressive” by their opponents, namely the Marxists—to create a dialogue between Marxism and Christianity. I am not saying anything new, nor am I bringing owls to Athens. These things were published in newspapers, supposedly as a study in a series of articles. They propose a way of drawing near and discovering—just imagine!—common ground. Common ground! A dialogue, then, between Marxism and Christianity. Yet the matter is very simple: there is no room for dialogue. If you wish to become a Christian, you must become wholly Christian; you cannot remain a Marxist. It is impossible. And how will you become a Christian? By one means alone: not through dialogue, but through repentance. There is no path other than repentance. You must say, “I repent of what I am. Whether I am a Freemason, a Marxist, an atheist, an anarchist—whatever I may be, whatever you may be—I repent.”
Do you wish to become a Christian? Then you must repent, without opening a dialogue. Dialogue does exist in Holy Scripture; it exists in the New Testament. Christ enters into dialogue with the Samaritan woman, but there the dialogue is a pedagogical means, intended to draw in the prospective believer and help that person enter more deeply into the meaning of things. We have, in fact, two principal dialogues developed in this way: the Lord’s dialogue with Nicodemus and His dialogue with the Samaritan woman. In opening a dialogue, the Lord has no intention of yielding anything through the exchange taking place between Christ and
Nicodemus or the Samaritan woman—not in the least. Rather, I repeat, the dialogue has a pedagogical form, so that the other person may understand something. “Woman, give Me a drink.” “How is it that You, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a Samaritan woman?” “If you knew who it is who says this to you…” and so forth. It is simply a way of teaching. It does not mean that we seek common ground. It is not a dialogue that becomes a dialectical negotiation, in which we search for common points so that we may coexist. Notice how slowly I am speaking. I normally speak very quickly, but I am deliberately speaking slowly: so that we may coexist.
So that Freemasonry may coexist with Christianity; Christianity with Marxism; Christianity with anarchism; and—imagine even this—Christianity with atheism. This sort of dialectic—you do understand what the word “dialectic” means, do you not?—comes from the evil one. It is one hundred percent demonic. I will say it once again: Christianity has known only one path, one path by which anyone may approach it. It is the path of metanoia, repentance. Repent! John the Baptist proclaimed this, and the Lord began His preaching with the same word: “Repent!” Do you wish to enter the Kingdom of God? Repent! I will not negotiate with you. The truth is complete and has been fully revealed.
You either accept it or you do not. Anything beyond this comes from the devil. “Whatever is more than these is from the evil one.” I say this here on the occasion of speaking about metanoia, repentance. And I say it especially because lately much has been written in the magazines—in all these intellectual magazines that have appeared and are now circulating. They speak of “dialogue with the Holy Mountain,” and there you see some very strange things, these peculiar attempts at rapprochement, while those involved refuse to abandon the positions they already hold. They say it plainly: “We are Marxists, and we want to enter into dialogue.” But what will come of it? What will come of it? Nothing will come of it. Do you want to be saved? Then become a Christian. Otherwise, remain as you are. We have nothing to discuss.
Tomorrow they may even come to me and ask, “What do you have to say?” I have already said it. I have said exactly what I am telling you now. I say this plainly: there can be no dialogue. I say it for the third time. There is one path: metanoia, repentance. Nothing else. Is this true? Is it scriptural? If anyone wishes to examine what I am saying, let him examine it. It is scriptural. It is straightforward. Anything else is not right. And so, my dear friends, the second thing that the Spirit of God brings us in our Baptism is, as I told you, the forgiveness of sins. “Oh, the indescribable loving-kindness of God!”
What an indescribable loving-kindness of God! “Those who had no hope of being saved are counted worthy of the Holy Spirit.” These are the people who said, “Brethren, what must we do to be saved?” Though they had no hope even of being saved, now they are not only saved but are also counted worthy of the Holy Spirit. Can you grasp this? What a gift of God! We human beings crucified Him, and afterward He not only forgives us but also gives us the Holy Spirit. “Do you see the power of Baptism?” Do you see it? “If any one of you has crucified Christ through blasphemous words, has denied Him before men through ignorance, or by evil deeds has caused the doctrine of the faith to be blasphemed and mocked...”
“Let him be of good hope as he repents, for the same grace is present even now.” If someone crucified Christ with blasphemous words, such as heretical teachings; if someone, through ignorance, denied Christ before men; if someone, through his evil deeds, caused the doctrine of our faith to be blasphemed—let him have good hope. Let him stand firm in hope as he repents. “For the same grace is present even now.” The grace of God is present now—present even now. Not only then, in the time of the Apostle Peter, but now and always. And now we come to the final paragraph, the sixteenth.
“Take courage, O Jerusalem; the Lord will take away all your iniquities.” Take courage, O Jerusalem. Who is this Jerusalem? It is those who are preparing to believe, those who will make up the Jerusalem above, the Church. Take courage, O Jerusalem. “The Lord will take away all your iniquities. The Lord will wash away the filth of His sons and daughters by the spirit of judgment and the spirit of burning. He will sprinkle clean water upon you, and you shall be cleansed from all your sins. Angels will dance around you and say, ‘Who is she who comes up clothed in white, leaning upon her beloved?’” This verse is from the Song of Songs. Who is this, it asks, who is clothed in pure white and leans upon the arm
of her beloved? It is from the Song of Songs, as I told you. It is the faithful soul; it is the Church. “For the soul that was formerly a servant has now taken the Master Himself as her beloved.” This soul, which was formerly a servant, now becomes the bride of her beloved Christ. “And because He accepts her sincere resolve, He will proclaim, ‘Behold, you are beautiful, my companion.’” Christ says, “My companion, you who are close to Me”—this is the Church. “Behold, you are beautiful.” You are beautiful. “Behold, you are beautiful.” Do not forget that we are in the Song of Songs. “Your teeth are like flocks of newly shorn sheep.” Your teeth—this too is from the Song of Songs.
Here we have a description of the graces of the Church—a description of the graces of the Church. Your teeth, it says, are like flocks of newly shorn sheep: pure white! “Because of your conscientious confession of faith.” Yes, because you made a sincere and conscientious confession. Consider this: it is said that there once was a man with strong teeth. He lived beyond a hundred years and did not have a single decayed tooth. This was a reward from God. It may seem a little strange. Why was he rewarded? Because throughout his life he never spoke against anyone. Saint Cyril now takes this beautiful image from the Song of Songs and says: Your teeth are pure white because you made a sincere confession of faith, saying, “I belong to Christ. I was baptized in the name of the Holy Trinity,” and so forth.
“All of them bearing twins,” because of the twofold grace—I mean the grace bestowed through water and the Spirit—or because of the proclamation given through the Old Testament and the New Testament. And may it come to pass—I will not say more, because I shall speak afterward—“may all of you, having completed the course of the fast”—so they were fasting, and may the course of your fast be completed—“remembering what has been said, bearing fruit in good works, and standing blameless before the spiritual Bridegroom, receive from God the forgiveness of sins, in Christ Jesus our Lord, to whom be glory unto the ages of ages. Amen.”
Those who were preparing to be baptized used to fast, my dear friends. Yes. The Didache of the Twelve Apostles, an ancient book, tells us that when someone is going to be baptized, he should fast. Those who will be present at his Baptism may fast as well. This means, please understand, that whenever someone becomes a sponsor and wishes to baptize a child—since, of course, we cannot make an infant fast—the sponsor should fast for one, two, or three days, as much as he can. The other invited guests may fast as well. In the ancient Church, when people were invited to a Baptism, they did not concern themselves with party favors, elegant dresses, suits, and
gossip during the Mystery. Instead, those who were present fasted. And because those present fasted for the sake of the person being baptized, those baptized were prepared and formed to become Saints and Martyrs. Now, please allow me to finish in the few minutes remaining—in these last ten minutes. Since our subject is Baptism, and since we will not speak of it again except in one mystagogical catechesis of Saint Cyril, allow me very quickly to point out several very useful teachings on Baptism from Saint John of Damascus.
We might call these a supplement to what we have seen in Saint Cyril. “We confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and eternal life.” One Baptism. That is why we are not baptized again. “For Baptism signifies the death of the Lord.” Our Baptism reveals the death of the Lord, but also our own death—our own as well. We have died to our dead works. “Therefore, just as the death of the Lord took place once, so must we also be baptized once.” Why are we baptized only once? To show that the Lord died once—only once. I will not read everything he says, but only those passages I have underlined in the text.
“You are baptized according to the word of the Lord, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”—not merely in the name of Christ, but in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. The Lord Himself told us this. The Gospel according to Matthew concludes with this command of the Lord. And He says “in the name,” not “in the names,” because we do not have three persons with three essences. There are three persons and one essence. That is why He says “in the name,” not “in the names.” “Through the three immersions, Baptism signifies the three days of the Lord’s burial.” The threefold immersion and rising from the water reveal the three days during which the Lord was in the tomb. “When the Lord taught His own disciples the invocation, He said...”
“Baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” I explained this to you above. “From His holy and immaculate side He caused a fountain of forgiveness to flow for us: water for rebirth and the washing away of sin and corruption, and blood as a drink that bestows eternal life.” Two things flowed from His side: water and blood. The water points to Baptism, through which we are cleansed, and the blood to the nourishment we receive so that we may live. “For since man is twofold, composed of soul and body, He also gave us a twofold cleansing, through water and the Spirit: the Spirit renewing within us the image and likeness, and the...”
“water, through the grace of the Spirit, cleansing the body from sin and delivering it from corruption.” Saint Cyril told us this as well. The water is for the washing of the body, and the Spirit for the washing of the soul, so that the whole human person may be cleansed. “For visible symbols reveal spiritual realities, and under the Law almost everything was cleansed with water.” The visible symbols make known realities perceived spiritually. The water I see today, the baptismal font I see today, the oil I see today—these are, in reality, signs of what I cannot see. Symbols stand before me, but behind those symbols are true realities. “Remembering...”
“Through Baptism we receive the firstfruits of the Holy Spirit.” Now, through Baptism, we receive the firstfruits of the Holy Spirit. “And rebirth becomes for us the beginning of another life, as well as a seal, a safeguard, and illumination.” It becomes the beginning of another life, a spiritual life. Have I not received the Holy Spirit? Then I must live a spiritual life. I must also receive rebirth, the seal, the safeguard that protects me, and the illumination of the Holy Spirit. “We must strive with all our strength to keep ourselves pure from defiling deeds.” At the cost of every sacrifice, we must keep ourselves pure after Baptism. And now he speaks here of several baptisms. Listen to them. The first baptism.
There are seven or eight baptisms. The first baptism is the Flood, which cut off sin. Listen to this, because it is very beautiful. God brings the Flood, he says, in order to cut off sin. In Baptism, too, we break with our sins. He brings the Flood so that sin may be cut off. The second baptism is through the sea and the cloud. “For the cloud is a symbol of the Spirit, and the sea a symbol of the water.” Remember when the Hebrews passed through the sea and the cloud overshadowed them. They passed through the sea and entered into the cloud, which means they were saved through the water. Were not Pharaoh’s people drowned there? Once again sin was cut off. Afterward, they also received the cloud, the presence of the Holy Spirit. The third baptism is that prescribed by the Law of old.
“The unclean person washed himself with water, washed his garments, and thus entered the camp.” He washed his clothes and then entered the camp. The fourth baptism is that of John. It was introductory and led those being baptized to metanoia, repentance, so that they might believe in Christ. This was the baptism of John, a baptism of repentance. The fifth baptism is the Baptism of the Lord, as He Himself was baptized—Christ was baptized—“so that He might crush the heads of the dragons; so that He might overwhelm...” The word means to inundate or drown. It is related to the words for washing and flood. It means to bring a flood, to overwhelm—so that He might submerge and drown...
“sin and bury the whole of the old Adam in the water; so that He might sanctify the Baptist; so that He might fulfill the Law.” Did you know that He was baptized in order to sanctify the Baptist? “So that He might reveal the Mystery of the Holy Trinity.” All these statements show why Christ was baptized. “So that He might become for us a type and an example of how to be baptized.” He became a type and an example for us. And we are baptized with the...
“perfect Baptism of the Lord, which is through water and the Spirit.” We too, he says, are baptized with the perfect Baptism of the Lord, through water and the Spirit. The sixth baptism is through metanoia, repentance, and tears, and it is truly painful. Tears and repentance are a difficult baptism. The seventh baptism...
is “through blood and martyrdom, with which Christ Himself was baptized for our sake. It is exceedingly venerable and blessed, for it cannot be defiled by later stains.” This is the baptism of martyrdom, after which there is no opportunity to be defiled again, because through martyrdom you die and depart. In other words, as soon as you receive this baptism, you leave this world. That is the baptism of martyrdom. The eighth baptism is the last, and it is not saving. The eighth baptism is not for salvation, but it abolishes evil, just as the first baptism did at the time of the Flood. It removes evil, “for evil and sin will no longer hold sway.” But it punishes without end. This is the eternal fire, which finally cuts off sin, and then the new heavens and the new earth are created...
In which the righteousness and holiness of God dwell. These are the marvelous things we see in the eight baptisms, my dear friends, as Saint John of Damascus teaches us. “John was baptized by laying his hand upon the divine head of the Master, and by his own blood.” He was baptized. How was John baptized? John was baptized by placing his hand upon Christ as He was being baptized. And John was baptized in his own blood—the baptism of martyrdom. “Baptism must not be postponed.” We must not delay Baptism. Pay attention to this: “It must not be postponed.” We must not delay Baptism once the faith of the person coming forward has been borne witness to by his deeds—that is, once it has been demonstrated.
“For whoever approaches Baptism deceitfully will be condemned rather than benefited.” This means someone who comes to be baptized with deceitful motives, as some do today: “I want to marry a woman because I love her, so I will become Orthodox in order to marry her, since I am a Muslim.” Ah, things are not right here. Such a person will be condemned rather than benefited. As for when you should baptize your children, do not wait for the godparent. “When will the godfather come from America to baptize the child?”—and the discussion goes back and forth. We should baptize the child promptly, so that the child can also receive Holy Communion. A child may die in an instant, and then what happens? This is why, my dear friends, Baptism is a very serious matter. It is the Mystery, the gateway through which we enter the Kingdom of God—which today is the Church—and tomorrow...
We shall enter the new heavens and the new earth, which again are the Kingdom of God. That is all, my dear friends, as we conclude the third catechetical lecture.

«Τί μεῖζον τοῦ σταυρῶσαι Χριστόν; Καὶ τούτου καθάρσιον ἐστὶ τὸ βάπτισμα. Τοῖς γὰρ προσελθοῦσι τρισχιλίοις ἔλεγεν ὁ Πέτρος». Τοῖς σταυρώσασι τὸν Κύριον, πυνθανομένοις καὶ λέγουσι, που ζητούσαν να μάθουν: «Τί ποιήσωμεν, ἄνδρες ἀδελφοί;» που έλεγαν στους Αποστόλους. Μέγα γὰρ τὸ τραῦμα. Η πληγή μεγάλη. Φόνος φοβερός, να γίνεις θεοκτόνος, θεοκτόνος. Επέστησας ἡμᾶς, ὦ Πέτρε, τὸ ἡμέτερον πτῶμα. Τι είπαν; «Τὸν ἀρχηγὸν τῆς ζωῆς ἀπεκτείνατε». Σκοτώσατε, έλεγε ο Απόστολος Πέτρος, τον αρχηγόν της ζωής. «Ποῖόν ἐστιν ἔμπλαστρον τηλικούτου τραύματος;» Τι φάρμακο μπορούμε να βάλουμε σε ένα τόσο μεγάλο τραύμα, σε μια τόσο μεγάλη αμαρτία;
