Summary

Saint Cyril teaches that Jesus sanctified baptism by receiving it Himself, making contempt for baptism incompatible with Christian piety. The baptismal font signifies both a womb of rebirth through water and the Spirit and a tomb in which believers share symbolically in Christ’s death. Following Christ’s pattern of baptism and temptation in the wilderness, the baptized receive grace and spiritual authority to struggle against demonic powers and proclaim the Gospel.

My beloved, we are now at the eleventh paragraph of Saint Cyril’s third catechetical lecture. As you may remember, in the preceding paragraphs he spoke about the fruit of metanoia, or repentance. Now he has a few more things to say about Holy Baptism, and so he gradually brings this lecture on Baptism to a close, since he is delivering it to those preparing to be baptized. “Jesus sanctified Baptism by being baptized Himself. If the Son of God was baptized, who can still despise Baptism and remain devout?”

Earlier, in connection with the previous subject, he said that the baptism of repentance was entrusted to the greatest prophet and the greatest man in all history, Saint John the Baptist, the greatest among those born of women. Now, then, he says that Jesus Himself sanctified this very Baptism—the Son of God who became man. Who, therefore, could remain devout while despising the Baptism that the Lord, having Himself been baptized, handed down to us? In other words, whoever reaches the point of treating Baptism as unimportant and despising it cannot remain devout.

In our own time, too, there have been signs of this contempt for Baptism. A person who despises it cannot be devout. You know, of course, that civil marriage was introduced in our time—in a sense, setting aside religious Holy Matrimony. Once a civil marriage is legally recognized, you retain all your rights, your children are legally recognized, and your wife has every legal protection; there is no need to enter religious Holy Matrimony. In other words, the matter of receiving God’s blessing has been set aside. In the past, as the older among you will remember, we had to present a certificate showing that we had been baptized before we could attend school—a baptismal certificate.

Unless I am mistaken, a baptismal certificate is no longer required for enrollment. A birth certificate is required, but not a baptismal certificate, whereas in the past it was the baptismal certificate. Long ago, then, you had to show that you had been baptized. Now pay attention to this. A day will come—and perhaps it is not very far away—when there will be no need even to be regarded as baptized, because the first seeds of contempt for Baptism have already appeared, just as they have with Holy Matrimony. But you should know this: as Saint Cyril says here, whoever despises Baptism cannot be devout. Such a person cannot be considered devout; that is, he will be impious.

The Lord Himself was baptized. Saint Cyril continues: “He was baptized, not to receive forgiveness of sins, for He was sinless; but though sinless, He was baptized so that He might bestow divine grace and dignity upon those who would be baptized.” He was not baptized to receive forgiveness of sins, because Christ is sinless. I told you on an earlier occasion that when the Lord was baptized in the Jordan, the holy Evangelists note that “He came up immediately”—He came out of the water at once.

They record this small detail: that He came out of the water immediately. The reason is quite simple. Those receiving John’s baptism—which was a baptism of repentance and preparation for the Baptism of Jesus Christ, Christian Baptism—confessed their sins for as long as they remained in the water; or rather, they remained in the water for as long as their confession lasted.

But who could enter the Jordan River, be baptized, and come out immediately, knowing that He had no sin at all? This happened only with Jesus Christ. That is why the Evangelist notes that He came out of the water immediately: there was no sin in Him. Why, then, was Christ baptized, since He was sinless? “So that He might bestow divine grace and dignity upon those who would be baptized”—so that He might give them

grace, but also dignity. Pay attention to this word, “dignity.” When does something acquire value and dignity? When a person of great importance has taken part in it. Then it acquires great value. Christ was baptized so that Baptism might receive this dignity. Yet it is not Baptism in the abstract, but those who would be baptized who receive dignity. If Christ was baptized, then how great is my dignity when I receive the same Baptism! “Since, therefore, the children have shared in blood and flesh, He Himself likewise

partook of the same, so that, having become sharers in His coming in the flesh, we might also become sharers in His divine grace.” This, he says, is from Hebrews 2:14. Since all the children of God have shared in weak and corruptible human nature, Christ likewise partook of that same nature. That is, He truly became man. By taking our nature, therefore, He appears as one like us.

He took our nature in like manner, and for this reason He is baptized—not, of course, because Christ was sinful. He did this so that we too might become sharers in His grace. “Thus Jesus was baptized, so that together with salvation we might also receive dignity.” Alongside salvation, I also receive dignity. My beloved, this is something great—perhaps an aspect of the Mystery of Baptism that we have failed to notice. When a person is baptized, he receives dignity. He is not merely saved; he receives dignity. To help you understand, we may save a plot of land, protecting it from encroachment by putting a fence around it.

That is one aspect. But if this plot of land is in a prime location, it also acquires value. Protecting it with a fence and the value it possesses are therefore two different things. In the same way, the grace of God received in Baptism and the dignity a person receives are two different things. This very dignity opens the way for him ultimately to become a child of God. For if a person did not receive dignity through Baptism, how could he become a child of God? How could he receive adoption? This, then, is something great. And today I do not know whether we truly sense this dignity of Baptism, or whether, at some point in the future, we will be ashamed or proud to say that we have been baptized.

“According to Job, the dragon was in the waters, receiving the Jordan into its mouth. Since the heads of the dragon had to be crushed, Christ descended into the waters and bound the strong one, so that we might receive authority to tread upon serpents and scorpions. The Beast was not small, but fearsome.” Here, my beloved, Saint Cyril takes a verse from Job and uses it as a very beautiful comparison, intended to explain why Christ was baptized. Job speaks there of the dragon. More precisely, the passage is in chapter 40, verses 18–19, and it probably refers to the hippopotamus.

I do not wish to dwell any longer on the book of Job. I will only tell you that it describes a Beast so enormous—although I say “probably,” because according to another interpretation it is simply a dragon in a general sense, a huge creature—that if it were to move...

against the current of the Jordan, this would be said of it: “It receives the Jordan into its mouth.” It is as though, he says, it could receive the whole Jordan into its mouth. The river would be nothing to it—nothing at all! And the Jordan is an entire river. Yet the Jordan does not contain enormous beasts or sea monsters, as the Nile perhaps did, with its hippopotamuses and crocodiles.

This comes from Job, as I explained to you. But the Jordan has no such creatures. Therefore, this is a Beast spoken of in a general sense, not specifically a hippopotamus or crocodile. What does Saint Cyril mean by it? The passage has a prophetic dimension. This dragon lurking within creation is the devil, represented, so to speak, as dwelling in the waters of the Jordan. It is the devil. That is why he says, “The Beast was not small, but fearsome.” Christ now descends into the waters. “Having descended into the waters, He bound the strong one”; that is, He captured and bound the strong one. This recalls a saying of the Lord: no one can keep his house secure unless he first

binds the strong man, the one stronger than himself. How else could it be done? My house is in danger unless I bind the strong man. And here, my beloved, the strong man is the devil. Saint Cyril says that Christ did this in order to give us authority to tread upon serpents and scorpions—that is, to overcome the devil. This is another aspect of Baptism. “No fishing vessel could carry even one piece of skin from its tail.” This too comes from Job. In other words, no fishing boat

could carry away even the smallest piece of hide from the tail of this Beast. “Destruction ran before it, ravaging all whom it encountered.” Wherever this Beast went, destruction went before it; whatever it found in its path, it destroyed. Its presence ravaged and destroyed those it encountered. Saint Cyril means the devil—the devil at every moment. As I told you, this entire image is taken from Job. “Life came running to meet it.” Christ now comes to be baptized in the Jordan,

so that Life might meet this fearsome Beast, the devil. “So that death might at last be muzzled, and all who have been saved might say...” Thus, the Beast here is death. Yes, it is the devil and, by extension, death, because the devil brought death. Who could overcome the devil? Who could overcome what the devil brought—death? But Life came, entered the water, and encountered, to put it simply, death and the devil. He defeated them, so that now we who are baptized

may say: “O death, where is your victory? O Hades, where is your sting?” Hades, where is your poisonous sting, with which you stung people like a wasp and gathered them all into your dark dominion? God willing, we will speak about this saying next Sunday, because we have not yet finished. We still have a few remaining matters concerning the Resurrection of the Dead, as well as some other matters concerning the renewal of the universe. I mention this in passing because Saint John says in the Apocalypse: “And I saw a new heaven and a new earth.” What we shall explain is how the old became new—that is, the manner

described to us by the Apostle Peter: the manner in which this will take place. But, God willing, we will speak of these things on Sunday. “The sting of death is destroyed through Baptism.” This is the final answer given after the teaching about the dignity a person receives through Baptism. What is the second point? Through Baptism, the sting of death is destroyed. Indeed, a person is baptized in order to enter eternal life. No one, he says, enters eternal life; no one enters the Kingdom of God except through Baptism. Therefore, if I am baptized, I gain life. What, then, is Baptism?

It is that which has already struck at the sting of death, at the very heart of death. That is what Baptism is. These, then, are aspects of the great worth of Baptism. I trust you understand the structure of the whole subject. Paragraph twelve: “For you descend into the water clothed in sins; but the invocation of grace, having sealed your soul, no longer allows you to be swallowed by the fearsome dragon.” You descend, then—you go down into the water bearing your sins, as a sinful human being. But the invocation made over the water, by which you are sealed with the grace of God—

and which has sealed your soul—does not allow the dragon to harm you or the devil to swallow you. Here, allow me to make a brief comment. As you know, some of our Christians—Christians who were, of course, baptized with Christian Baptism in the name of the Holy Trinity—at some point in their lives renounced Christian Baptism and accepted another baptism. Someone who becomes a Jehovah’s Witness, for example, receives another baptism. It is certainly not in the name of the Holy Trinity, because the Jehovah’s Witnesses do not believe in the Holy Trinity. You saw recently in the newspapers—and these newspapers...

They hold nothing sacred or holy. The only sacred things to them are their pockets and their wallets. Someone ought to say to them, “You wretched, impoverished journalists! Were you not baptized? Do you not have even a little faith within you? Yet you publish every perverse and bizarre thing in order to mock and attack the Church in any way you can, simply to put a few of Judas’s silver coins into your pockets.” And so, my beloved, in enormous headlines and with photographs they publicize the baptism of the Jehovah’s Witnesses. More tragic still was the latest event in Athens, inside the Apollo hall, where it was reported that two poor women—oh, how pitiable they were...

Two pitiable nuns from a monastery in Boeotia not only abandoned their monastery—which, after all, is not so rare. Let us say that monastic life did not suit them. Very well. Let us say that they wanted to marry, and so they married. It is not good; it is very sad. But in any case, this is not something unheard of. Yet they also became Jehovah’s Witnesses! And in the end they even received their baptism! And those utterly wretched newspapers published this as well, saying that the great sensation—the success of the whole event—was precisely this. What was it? That two former nuns had received the baptism of the Jehovah’s Witnesses. My beloved, what can I tell you? You will have seen such things in your own lives...

Those who renounce the Baptism of Christ and accept alien baptisms—such as the baptism of the Jehovah’s Witnesses, initiation into Freemasonry, or initiation into Buddhism—do you know what happens to them? I have seen it with my own eyes. Listen to what happens: they become demonized. Do you understand what that means? It is exactly what Saint Cyril says here. Because you have been sealed by the grace of God, the Holy Trinity, when you now go to be baptized, you have nothing to fear from the dragon lurking in the water. But when you are baptized or undergo initiation into alien forms of baptism...

and all the more when you abandon your Christian Baptism, then the devil gains authority over you. My beloved, remember my words: Saint Cyril is right here. You will observe the lives of such people and say, “May God preserve us.” Then you will learn from actual experience how people become demonized. I do not know whether we could—or whether you yourselves might—follow what became of those two nuns in particular who received the baptism of the Jehovah’s Witnesses, and see what would happen later in their lives. My beloved, it is a fearful thing when God allows me to become demonized—that is, to come under the influence of an evil spirit. This, I say once again, is what Saint Cyril says here...

Saint Cyril says: “You descended dead in sins, but you rise again, made alive in righteousness. For if you have been united with the likeness of the Savior’s death, you will also be counted worthy of the Resurrection.” You entered dead on account of your sins, he says, and descended into the water; but you came up made alive in holiness and in the grace of God. For if you have been united with the likeness of the Savior’s death, you will most certainly be counted worthy of the Resurrection as well. Notice something here. What is this “likeness”? He does not simply say “His death,” but “the likeness of the Savior’s death.” This comes from Romans 6:5.

It does not say simply “death,” but “the likeness of His death.” What is this likeness of death? It is the water. Why? Because there is a threefold immersion and emergence. The baptismal font symbolizes many things. First of all, the font is a womb. It symbolizes a womb in which you remain in order to be born. This is rebirth. It is precisely what Nicodemus, the teacher of the Law, once said to the Lord: “How is it possible for me to be born again?” And, “Unless one is born from above, can he enter the Kingdom of God?” In other words, Nicodemus asks, “Must I enter again into my mother’s body, into her womb?” For a moment, we might call this a very naïve question from Nicodemus. The Lord says, “Are you the teacher of Israel, and yet you do not know this?” My beloved, the new womb into which we must enter to be born again is this: the first womb was our mother’s, which gave us birth; the second womb is the baptismal font, which gives us birth from above. And this rebirth comes through water and the Spirit. The baptismal font is also a tomb. Thank you.

It is the tomb of Christ. The tomb is the likeness of Christ’s death. Christ remained in the tomb for three days; He was dead for three days. We must therefore now become united with Him. Notice the word “united.” This verb is very important. It means that I have been grafted onto the same plant. I am not growing beside a plant; I have been grafted into that very plant and have become one with it. I must draw sap from that same plant. As we were saying, this is grafting. A graft is a branch taken from elsewhere and attached there...

to the trunk of another tree, from which it draws sap and life. In the same way, I must become united with the likeness of Christ’s death. I must die. This is why we have the threefold immersion and emergence, as a figure of death: we have become united with Christ—we have been grafted into His death. Do you know what this means? It means that we must die to the world and to our sins. The Apostle Paul says that, in relation to the world, I am dead and crucified; with Christ, I have been crucified—I am crucified.

I am dead to the world. I have no relationship with the world. We must therefore put the worldly mind to death, so that we may be made alive in the life of Christ. This is very important, because we cannot bring our Baptism to fruition unless this death takes place within the womb of the baptismal font. In this way, as the Apostle Paul goes on to say here, we shall finally be able to become partakers of His Resurrection. I shall read it again: “For if you have been united with the likeness of the Savior’s death, you will also be counted worthy of the Resurrection.”

You will be counted worthy of the Resurrection as well. For unless you are united with Christ and die with Him, you cannot rise with Him. The Apocalypse expresses this in the following words: unless you die to the life of this world, you will not rise in what is called the first Resurrection. You must die and rise again before the death of the body, the common death that comes to every human being. You must therefore die and rise again. In the language of the Apocalypse, this is the first Resurrection.

“For Jesus took upon Himself the sins of the whole world and died, so that, having put sin to death, He might rise in righteousness. In the same way, you descend into the water and are, as it were, buried in the waters, just as He was buried in the rock; then you rise again to walk in newness of life.” Jesus, he says, clothed Himself with the sins of the whole human race and descended into death in order to rise again. In the same way, you descend into the water and, as it were, are buried within the waters, just as He was buried in the rock—that is, in the tomb.

You do this so that you too may walk as a new person, in newness of life. My beloved, unless this first death and first Resurrection take place—as you saw clearly in the Apocalypse, the first death and the first Resurrection—it is impossible for anyone to attain eternal life. Impossible, impossible, impossible. We must therefore do more than simply be baptized, as we have already been; we must bring our Baptism to fruition. You see, the value of what we are now saying about Baptism is not something fit only for a museum. It is not merely good to know what Baptism is for the sake of general knowledge. God forbid...

that I should make such an effort to tell you all this merely for that reason. You could look it all up in an encyclopedia. That is not the point. The point is that all of us should be urged to bring our Baptism to fruition. Pay close attention to this: we must bring our Baptism to fruition. Paragraph thirteen.

“Once you have been counted worthy of grace, He then grants you authority to wrestle against the opposing powers. For just as, after His Baptism, He was tempted for forty days—not because He could not have conquered before that, but because He wished to do everything in proper order and sequence—so you too must not dare to wrestle against the opposing powers before Baptism. But once you have received grace, then take courage, contend with the weapons of righteousness, and afterward, if you wish, proclaim the Gospel.” It is only then, after you have been counted worthy of grace. Which grace? The grace of Baptism. Then you will receive authority to wrestle against the opposing powers. What are these opposing powers? The demonic powers. You know that one of the devil’s names is “the adversary.” The adversary is the one who opposes the will of God. Thus you will be able to wrestle against the opposing powers, just as happened with Jesus Christ.

After His Baptism, Christ was led into the wilderness to undergo temptation. Not because Christ could not have conquered the devil before His Baptism. Far from it! It was to teach you that everything must be done in proper order and sequence—what comes first and what comes second. Afterward, if you wish, you may not only struggle successfully, of course, but may even become an apostle and an evangelist. “And if you wish, proclaim the Gospel.” But you cannot act as an evangelist and apostle before being baptized. That cannot be done. Things must follow their proper order. Still, what I would particularly like to tell you from this paragraph is the following.

If you are attentive students of Holy Scripture—very attentive students—you will have read the following words in the fourth chapter of the Gospel according to Matthew: after His Baptism, Christ “was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.” Christ was led by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil, to undergo the trial brought by the devil. In other words, the Spirit of God brought Him into the wilderness. Please pay attention: this verse is of central importance.

It means that you have been baptized. Now, as Saint Cyril will tell us in another of his catechetical lectures, in the so-called Mystagogical Catecheses—for there he will return to the subject of Baptism, though at the pace we are going it will take us a long time to reach those lectures—he will explain how you are to struggle against the evil powers. My beloved, the purpose is that we wrestle against the powers of darkness. Before Baptism, however, we cannot do so, because until then the devil holds us captive. Through Baptism we have now escaped him. We have been set free. He has lost us as his spoils and prisoners.

He will seek to recapture us, and then the struggle and battle will begin. But why was Christ led into the wilderness? Did He need to wrestle with the devil there in order to conquer him? My beloved, Christ had no such need. Saint Cyril puts this very well in a parenthesis here and says that He had no need of it. Christ could conquer the devil either before His Baptism or afterward. He did this for the sake of proper order and sequence. But why was He led there? Christ was led into the wilderness by the Holy Spirit in order to meet the devil. Christ was not waiting for the devil; rather, so to speak, the devil was waiting for Christ. And Christ went out to meet him, just as the ancient ascetics went out into the wilderness—not, of course, to enjoy themselves...

They did not go into the wilderness to escape work, supposedly because they were lazy or for any such reason, but to meet and struggle against the devil through intense ascesis and prayer. This is an extraordinarily immense task. And Christ had to defeat the devil there in the wilderness after His Baptism, so that He could rightfully grant those being baptized the right and the power to defeat the devil. When I say “could,” I mean from the human side, for God is answerable to no one.

So Christ defeated the devil, and, as you know, He defeated him there in the wilderness through a threefold temptation. It is worth describing this threefold temptation to you, as you will see. But before I proceed to it, let me explain why He was led into the wilderness by the Holy Spirit. If we regarded Christianity as an attempt to solve the social problem, would it not strike you as strange that the Spirit of God should send me into the wilderness to struggle against the powers of darkness? What would be the point of that?

You may think this turns everything upside down. But the reason it seems so becomes clear from the content of the three temptations. Listen. The first temptation was: “Command these stones to become loaves of bread.” First of all, the temptation lies in the abundance. Why “stones,” and not “a stone”? Did many stones have to become many loaves for the Lord to eat on the fortieth day of His fast? Would not one stone turned into bread have been enough to satisfy Him? This abundance is demonic, because it represents what we might call the abundance of prosperity.

It is the opposite of simplicity and restraint. As I told you during the question period, the manna in the wilderness was a single kind of food. There was meaning in the fact that it was only one kind. The people of God had to be taught contentment in the wilderness. It was not that God forbade them the other fruits of the earth. No! When they entered the Promised Land, the manna ceased, so that they might taste all the fruits of the earth. He Himself spoke of “the Promised Land, flowing with milk and honey.” But they first had to pass through a certain ascesis, an ascetic discipline, in order to learn the lesson of simplicity and restraint. That lesson stands opposed to the notion that Christianity exists to solve the social problem. It stands opposed to it.

What did he say? “Command these stones to become loaves of bread.” And there is another element here: arrogance. Look at all that bread! My dear friends, the West—the Christian West—fell into this temptation, and Dostoevsky reproaches it for this, as I shall tell you shortly. But let us now come to the second temptation. “Throw Yourself down,” he says, “from the pinnacle of the Temple, and You will see that nothing will happen to You. For it is written, ‘He shall give His angels charge concerning You,’” and so forth. He has commanded His angels, he says...

to bear You up in their hands, lest You strike Your foot against a stone. You will not even stumble anywhere. Angels will carry You, and nothing will happen to You. This meant an easy path for His messianic work. The courtyard below the Temple was always full of people. So if Christ were to throw Himself down from the lofty pinnacle of the Temple, where the devil had taken Him—the devil brought Him there, and Christ condescended to it; oh, what love for mankind, what condescension, what divine forbearance! Christ accepted being carried by the devil from the wilderness to Jerusalem and placed upon the pinnacle of the Temple—and the devil said to Him, “Throw Yourself down.” What would that mean? If He fell and suffered no harm, the people would immediately say...

“What is happening here? How did He fall from such a height, suffer no harm, and land on His feet? Then He must be the Messiah.” In other words, what was this? An easy way to gain the title of Messiah. But the title of Messiah is gained only through the Cross. The devil was trying to frustrate Christ’s true messianic work and drive Him onto another path. Then came the third temptation. He took Him up onto an exceedingly high mountain and, in a panoramic vision, showed Him all the kingdoms of the earth: those of the Persians and Babylonians—although the Babylonian kingdom no longer existed, while the Persians, of course, still did—the Egyptians, perhaps...

the Chinese and the Indians, and, in one panoramic vision, all the kingdoms of the earth, including the Romans. And the devil said to Him, “I will give You all the wealth of the earth. It is mine.” Somewhere in one of his catechetical lectures, Saint Cyril says: “Liar! Not even a single coin belongs to you. Liar! You do not possess even one coin of your own, yet you claim that you will give away everyone’s wealth.” Whose wealth? You possess nothing, you poor, lying devil. “The wealth and kingdoms of the earth are mine,” he says. “I will give them all to You if You fall down and worship me.” The Lord answered, “Get behind Me, Satan.” Do you know what this temptation meant? You will become the ruler of the world. It is a dreadful thing—truly dreadful.

My dear friends, this threefold temptation comes to every believer. It is this: “Command these stones to become loaves of bread”—the satisfaction of desires and the pursuit of pleasures. “I will give you the wealth of the earth”—the love of money and riches. “Throw yourself down from the pinnacle; nothing will happen to you”—pride and vainglory. These are the three great temptations that confront every human being. No one could ever have overcome these three temptations if Christ had not first overcome them. There is a saying that many have despised money, but no one has despised glory.

Christ also conquered human glory, that is, vainglory. My brother, you will not be able to overcome these three temptations unless you are baptized in the font in which Christ was baptized and then go out into the wilderness of life to overcome them through the grace of God that you received in Baptism. But as I told you earlier, the West unfortunately accepted the three temptations instead of overcoming them. Dostoevsky places these words on the lips of the Grand Inquisitor, who passes judgment on Jesus Christ. A strange thing, is it not?

The priest, the Christian, passes judgment on Christ—that is, Western Christianity passes judgment on Christ. And he says to Him: “You made a mistake. You were offered the means to turn the stones into bread, but You did not do it. You see, if we had the power today to turn stones into bread, everyone would have enough to eat. You see? You were given an easy way to win the whole world in Your name, but You refused it. You refused to throw Yourself down from the pinnacle of the Temple. And today we endure so many hardships in our missions, trying to carry Your name to the ends of the earth, yet it is not accepted.

“That miraculous means was available: by creating astonishment and holding a miracle in our hands, we could instantly amaze people and make them accept Your message. You see, the kingdoms of the earth were offered to You, but You did not accept them; You despised them. Today our treasuries would be filled with gold, and we would be able to rule the world. For this, Christ, You are condemned.” This is why Christian political parties arose in the West, and why Christianity there came to be regarded as a means of solving the social problem. But such ideas belong to the realm of heresy.

I find every possible way to tell you this because I fear the storms and tempests that may come upon our homeland in the future. I am warning you so that you may stand firm. Remember these things; remember them. If you wish to stand firm, Christianity comes only to help you overcome the dark powers of Hades and of the devil. “For here we have no continuing city.” In a deluded world, a fleeting world, a world that is only an outward form and has no lasting foundation anywhere, what are we trying to establish? A Christian state? What sort of thing is that? The Christian commonwealth is within us. Let us not pursue utopias.

My dear friends, I beg you: whenever we have tried to make the city of God an outward institution, what have we achieved in history? Nothing. Do you want us to repeat the Crusades of the West? That was what they claimed to be imposing: the city of God. Do you want us to impose another Thirty Years’ War? That too happened in the West. Do you want us to repeat the various massacres that took place throughout history, with Christians always slaughtering other Christians—Roman Catholics killing Protestants, or Protestants killing Roman Catholics? What do you want? What do you want? My dear friends, we have departed from the spirit, from the true spirit of the Gospel. We have departed from the spirit of the Mysteries of Christ. We have departed from it. We no longer understand anything.

For this reason, we truly need to begin immersing ourselves anew in meanings that are sound, true, genuinely Orthodox, and Patristic. By Patristic, I mean the way the Fathers interpreted the Word of God: authentically, correctly, truthfully, and unto salvation.

Paragraph fourteen. “Jesus Christ, though He was the Son of God, did not preach the Gospel before His Baptism. If the Master Himself observed the proper order of the appointed times, shall we servants dare to act without order?” Saint Cyril apparently had in mind the impatience of certain Christians who, driven by vainglory, wanted to begin serving as evangelists and preachers before they were even baptized. It is something like what Saint James, the Brother of the Lord, says: “My brethren, let not many of you become teachers; let not many become teachers.” For do not forget that every teacher will have to give an account to God.

Yes. For example, if I do not teach you what is right, I will have to give an account to God. What do you think? Do you think I can simply sit here, settled comfortably in a chair, with a hundred pairs of eyes looking at me, and feel pleased with myself? What sort of idea is that? I bear responsibility. First of all, I am being examined by you, and I am accountable before God. Woe to me if I do not tell you the truth. Woe to me. So we bear the responsibility of giving an account to God. Did we preach correctly? Did we speak rightly? Therefore, he says, my brethren, let not many of you become teachers, because we shall incur judgment; we shall incur condemnation from God. Unfortunately, there are those who often—and of course neither Saint James nor Saint Cyril means...

that we should never become apostles to the people around us. But if you wish to do so, he says, it must happen in the proper order. You see, Christ waited until He was thirty years old. Was this because He needed to mature? No. The Law said that no one could undertake a public ministry before the age of thirty. He was the keeper of the Law. So you must wait, just as Christ waited. Then, as you see, Christ was first baptized, then went into the wilderness, and only after the wilderness began preaching. We need not look far for someone who imitated Him. Who did so? The Apostle Paul. My dear friends, when the Apostle Paul was baptized...

what does he himself tell us? He went into the wilderness of Arabia and remained there for three years. Why? To be formed and prepared. And who was this? Who? The very man who had received the Gospel by direct revelation from Jesus Christ. Do you hear? He himself says that he received it by direct revelation from Jesus Christ. He says, “I did not receive the Gospel from the other Apostles.” If he had, he would not have been an Apostle of the first rank, but of the second rank. He would have been what we now call an Apostolic Father, like Saint Polycarp or Saint Ignatius of Antioch. His epistles would not then have had a place in the New Testament. But...

Paul was an Apostle of the first rank—and this is not said out of vainglory. He was of the first rank because the Apostle Paul received the revelation of the Gospel directly from Christ. Even so, does it not strike you that he went and remained for three years in the wilderness of Arabia? What was he doing there? My dear friends, he was preparing himself not only theologically, through study. What did he study? He studied the Old Testament. How do we know? Did he not say, when he was in Rome and wrote to Timothy, “When you come here, pass through Troas and bring me the cloak I left there, and the books, especially the parchments”?

“And the books, especially the parchments”? What books were these? The New Testament had not yet been written; it was still being written. It was already taking shape through Paul’s epistles and, among other writings, the Gospel of Luke. The Gospel of Luke is, in fact, the Gospel of Paul. Luke accompanied Paul, gathered his material, and wrote it down. So what did those parchments contain? They contained the Old Testament, my dear friends. The Apostle Paul read and studied. Do you hear that? He was preparing himself. Only after such preparation can we truly say that we too are ready to begin some work. Paul, then, was baptized; afterward, he was trained theologically, and through ascesis—ascetic discipline—he brought his body into subjection, as he himself says.

After that, he went forth to preach, ready to struggle—to struggle against demons of every kind. Could you imagine Paul, with such a calling and such a mission, betraying Christ by saying, “I cannot carry the Gospel through to completion”? To endure those terrible temptations, in which he would have to fight hand to hand, Paul had to be thoroughly prepared. We too, therefore, must struggle. But I would like to stop here for now, since the paragraph is not finished, and continue next time, because our time has passed. I want to tell you that we must struggle even now, that we are already struggling, and that in the future we shall face dreadful temptations—above all, the temptation directed against our faith in the person of Jesus Christ.

A temptation directed against our faith in the person of the God-Man, Jesus Christ. My dear friends, let us prepare ourselves; let us put our Baptism to full use, so that we may reach the end victorious.

τον οποίον τρόπον μας αναφέρει ο Απόστολος Πέτρος. Ο τρόπος. Αλλά αυτά, πρώτα ο Θεός, την Κυριακή. «Λύεται δὲ τοῦ θανάτου τὸ κέντρον διὰ τοῦ βαπτίσματος». Αυτή είναι τώρα η τελική απάντηση που δίδεται μετά από την αξία που παίρνει ο άνθρωπος βαπτιζόμενος. Ποιο είναι το δεύτερο σημείο; Ότι με το βάπτισμα λύεται το κέντρο του θανάτου. Πράγματι, ο άνθρωπος που βαπτίζεται, βαπτίζεται για να εισέλθει στην αιώνια ζωή. Κανείς, λέγει, δεν μπαίνει στην αιώνια ζωή, κανείς δεν μπαίνει στη Βασιλεία του Θεού, παρά μόνο με το βάπτισμα. Άρα, εάν βαπτιστώ, κερδίζω τη ζωή. Άρα, τι είναι το βάπτισμα;

Λοιπόν, τον ενίκησε τον διάβολο ο Χριστός και, όπως τα ξέρετε, ο Χριστός ενίκησε τον διάβολο εκεί στην έρημο σε έναν τριπλόν πειρασμό. Αξίζει ο κόπος να σας τον αναφέρω αυτόν τον τριπλόν πειρασμό, γιατί αξίζει, θα το ιδείτε. Μην προχωρήσω όμως στον πειρασμό τον τριπλούν. Σας λέγω ότι γιατί οδηγήθηκε από το Πνεύμα το Άγιο στην έρημο. Δεν σας κάνει εντύπωση ότι, αν θεωρούσαμε τον Χριστιανισμό μία προσπάθεια λύσεως του κοινωνικού προβλήματος, τι δουλειά έχει να με στείλει εμένα στην έρημο το Πνεύμα του Θεού, να παλέψω με τις δυνάμεις του σκότους; Τι δουλειά έχει;

Ο Χριστός ενίκησε και την ανθρώπινη δόξα, δηλαδή την κενοδοξία. Δεν θα μπορέσεις να νικήσεις, αδελφέ μου, αυτούς τους τρεις πειρασμούς, εάν δεν βαπτιστείς μέσα στην κολυμβήθρα που βαπτίστηκε ο Χριστός και δεν βγεις στην έρημο της ζωής να τους νικήσεις με τη χάρη του Θεού που πήρες από το βάπτισμα. Αλλά, όπως σας είπα προηγουμένως, η Δύση δυστυχώς απεδέχθηκε τους τρεις πειρασμούς, όχι να τους νικήσει, αλλά ως εξής: Βάζει στα χείλη του ιεροεξεταστού ο Ντοστογιέφσκι και λέγει, λέγει ο οποίος ιεροεξεταστής και κρίνει τον Ιησού Χριστό. Περίεργο πράγμα, ε;
