Summary
Saint Cyril teaches that baptism must bear fruit through abandoning sinful habits and cultivating virtues. Salvation remains possible for every sinner who repents, is washed, sanctified, and received as a child of God rather than persisting deliberately in evil. Christian baptism grants forgiveness of ancestral and personal sins, sanctification, divine adoption, and entrance into the Kingdom of God.

Beloved, we are now in paragraph 8 of the Third Catechetical Lecture of Saint Cyril of Jerusalem.
“What, then, must we do, and what are the fruits of repentance? Let him who has two tunics share with him who has none. The teacher is worthy of trust, because he himself was the first to put into practice what he taught. He was not ashamed to speak, for his conscience did not restrain him or hinder his tongue. And let him who has food do likewise.” Remember, we are considering that great subject of Holy Baptism, which Saint Cyril is explaining. After telling us why it is necessary, he explained precisely why water is used and what its theological meaning is. Now he comes to the great matter of the fruits of repentance and Baptism. It is not enough for someone simply to be baptized; he must also bear fruit. Saint John the Baptist himself said, “Bear fruits worthy of repentance.” Yes, you must repent, but you must also bear fruit. How will your repentance be shown? The first fruit of repentance is not to repeat what you have done. Of course, this does not mean that I must immediately attain a state and measure of sinlessness. For if, at my very first attempt, so to speak, I could attain sinlessness, then within twenty-four hours I would reach
the state of perfection. But in reality, that is not possible. It simply means that I should not repeat what I have done—at least the more serious sins. Then, little by little, I will strive continually to cut away whatever evil remains within me. This is the first fruit of repentance, and it is necessarily negative in character. The positive character of the fruit of repentance is the virtues. I must not only cut off the passions; I must now also bring forth virtues. If I do not bear this fruit, both in its negative and its positive aspects, then I cannot speak of true repentance.
Since Saint Cyril had previously told us that he would address this, he now says, “What, then, must we do?” What should a person do? “And what are the fruits of repentance? Let him who has two tunics share with him who has none.” Who said this? Saint John the Baptist. Saint Cyril comments: “The teacher was worthy of trust”—the teacher is worthy of trust—“because he himself was the first to put into practice what he taught.”
This is the opposite of the saying, “Teacher, you taught the law but did not keep it yourself.” My beloved, this is very important. You cannot speak about something unless you live it. And here, allow me to add something, although it concerns a rather particular matter. I will say it because I have often discussed it privately as well. Consider a priest who has a family—a wife and children. He is zealous and wants to preach the Word of God, to help his parish, and to raise it up spiritually. Yet his wife or his children, whether sons or daughters, have a negative effect. Let us suppose
that his daughter refuses to live according to the spirit of the Gospel, or that his son lives a dissolute life. Tell me, please, what is that man to do? Is he to say from the pulpit, “Keep your children under control”? His parishioners will reply, “Do you not see what your own children are doing?” His wife, his son, or his daughter has silenced the priest’s tongue. Without question, they have silenced him. Do you know what responsibility these people bear before the whole Church? For if I, the priest’s son, live in such a way,
I render my father, the priest, powerless to exercise his pastoral influence within the parish. I tell you truthfully: when the children or wives of priests come to me, I tell them privately the same things that I am now telling you publicly. This is truly a very serious and important matter. If a person is to speak about something, he must first have believed it and lived it himself. But it is tragic when I believe and live it, yet someone close to me, someone related to me, silences me against my will. For what else can I do? What else can I do? There is, of course, one severe measure.
Perhaps you will be horrified when you hear it. In the Old Testament, the people went to Eli the high priest and told him that his two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were setting a bad example.
In connection with the sacrifices, they would take meat from the sacrificial animals before it had been offered, so that they could cook and eat it. This would be like my eating a prosphoron before elevating it—that is, before offering it to God. Once you have elevated the prosphoron, then eat it; distribute it and eat it. But first it must be elevated. It was the same with the sacrifices. God does not eat meat; God had no need to eat the sacrificial animals. But the sacrifice first had to be offered.
What happened to the meat afterward? It was distributed, and the people ate it. But by acting in this way, Eli’s sons rejected the very meaning of sacrifice and the worship of God. So the people would go to Eli and tell him, “You know, they did this and this and this.” Eli rebuked his sons and said, “No, my sons, no, my sons; do not do this, because it is evil.” But they persisted. In the end, God punished Eli and his sons with death. I mean a violent death: all three were killed. But you may ask: what was that poor Eli supposed to do? Eli was a good and devout man. What should he have done? Did he not rebuke his sons? He did. Did he not counsel them? He did. What, then, was he supposed to do?
What was he supposed to do? It is a fearful thing. The Law said that the high priest must never touch a dead body. Even if his father died, he was neither to touch him nor to look upon him after death. For the high priest was the symbol of life, a type pointing to Jesus Christ. This was in the Old Testament. The high priest was to have no connection whatsoever with death, whether moral or physical. He was to have no connection with it at all. For that reason, the high priest even had to refuse to attend his own father’s funeral,
as the ancient Law commanded. It was severe indeed. In this case, Eli should have declared before the people:
“I repudiate them! I repudiate my children and no longer acknowledge them as my children. I reject them as my children. They are not my children.” Then his mouth would not have been silenced. But tell me, is that not terribly severe? Yet what else can I say? May God never allow such a thing. The task of a married priest with a family is very hard, especially in this area.
At times he faces a terrible dilemma: “What am I to do now? What am I to do?” I say this so that we may all understand it. And if you are ever able to help a priest’s family stand where it ought to stand, so that the priest’s mouth is not closed, you will certainly be doing something good and right. You will help prevent him, I repeat, from finding himself in this painful dilemma. Saint John the Forerunner, of course, was alone; he had no wife or children. You see, that makes a great difference. It is easier to be unmarried than married. If a married laborer of the Gospel truly wishes to stand upright, his
path and his work are hard—very hard and very difficult. Marriage is often chosen as a harbor and refuge, but allow me to say that it is a fathomless, storm-tossed, open sea. So be it; may God alone help us. I have nothing more to say. Is the unmarried state where the true difficulty lies? No, the difficulty is not in being unmarried. You often think that it is. But if an unmarried person is even a little watchful—just a little, a little, a little—he can accomplish many things. A married person bears a very great cross. An unmarried person does not bear such a great cross. You are accustomed to saying that the unmarried person has a cross, but he does not, provided that he truly believes in what he is doing. He must believe in it. If he does, his cross is not very great; it is small, small, small.
“He was not ashamed to speak, for his conscience did not restrain him or hinder his tongue.” You see, his conscience did not hold him back. It did not close his mouth or hinder his tongue, because what he carried within himself was also on his lips, and what was on his lips was also within him. He spoke plainly and directly. And now the other part, because these comments have been parenthetical: “And let him who has food do likewise.” This is parenthetical because Saint Cyril divided the sentence, “Let him who has two tunics share with him who has none, and let him who has food do likewise.” These words are, of course, found in Luke 3:11 and refer, as I told you, to Saint John the Baptist. In other words, this passage speaks of almsgiving.
A person who has repented gives alms. But this is not merely almsgiving. Pay close attention to this point. People often say, “If I have food, I should give some to another; if I have clothing, I should give some to another.” But have you ever carefully considered the words, “He who has two tunics should give one to another person”? Have you noticed that? If we had to describe this act, what would we call it? We would say it was almsgiving. No, beloved, no. It certainly has the form of almsgiving, but it is something much, much deeper. It means that you commit yourself to love and self-sacrifice.
You even accept parting with something you possess—and indeed with fifty percent of it. If you have two and give away one, you are left with fifty percent; you surrender the other fifty percent. This means that you are not avaricious. It means that your hope is not placed in material possessions. It means many things. In other words, it means that you have repented. So you see, this is not merely almsgiving. “Do you wish to enjoy the grace of the Holy Spirit, yet do not count the poor worthy to receive material food from you?” Here the Holy Father makes a comparison and says: You wish to enjoy the grace of the Holy Spirit, and yet
you disdain to give tangible food to the poor. In other words, imagine a pair of scales: you must place something on one side in order to weigh what is on the other. You want to receive spiritual things; you want the scale to tip down under the weight of God’s grace. Yes, but to attain this, you must place material things on the other pan. Here he speaks of food for the poor, placed on the other pan so that it too descends and the scales come into balance. In a certain proportion, then, you must give in order to receive. But can what you give possibly be compared with what you will receive?
Without question, it cannot. The Apostle Paul says, if I am not mistaken, in his Second Epistle to the Corinthians, when speaking about the collection—he devotes an entire chapter, or a chapter and a half, to it, if I remember correctly—that you will give money, and the saints in Jerusalem will receive your material blessing. But when they begin to pray for you, you will receive spiritual blessings. Can a material blessing be compared with a spiritual one? Certainly not. The one is temporary; the other is immortal and eternal. This gives meaning to what the Lord says:
Whoever gives even a cup of cold water will certainly not lose his reward. The one thing is material; the other is eternal. But to receive what is eternal, you must give what is temporal. To receive what is spiritual, you must give what is material. There is no other way. How else could it happen? So this is extremely important. “You seek great things, yet you will not share the little things you possess?” You ask great things of God, but you yourself will not give what is small. “Even if you are a tax collector or a sexually immoral person, hope for salvation.” Whatever spiritual condition you may be in, even if you are a tax collector or living an immoral life, you still have the hope of salvation. This is deeply consoling, my beloved: to be able to say that, whatever condition I may be in, I can be saved. It is extraordinarily consoling. And he goes on to say, “The tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering the Kingdom of God ahead of you.” This is found in the twenty-first chapter of Matthew, and the Lord said it to the Pharisees. Do you understand what it meant for Him to tell the Pharisees—who justified themselves and believed themselves to possess holiness—that immoral women and sinful tax collectors who extorted others were surpassing them on the way into the Kingdom of God, going ahead of those
who called themselves righteous? This is a great matter. And remember that it is the Lord Himself who says it. Saint Cyril then brings forward the testimony of the Apostle Paul: “And Paul is my witness, when he says: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters,” and so forth. As he says in the sixth chapter of First Corinthians: “Neither the sexually immoral, nor adulterers, nor idolaters, nor the effeminate, nor men who engage in homosexual acts, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the Kingdom of God.” They will not enter the Kingdom of God. Yes, they will not enter. But the Apostle Paul then adds, “And such were some of you.” Some of you belonged to these groups.
You were. You once were. But what have you done now? “You were washed.” This word comes from the verb “to wash,” and it refers to the washing of regeneration, which is Baptism. Or it refers to metanoia, repentance, the second washing—repentance, which restores what has been damaged after Holy Baptism, since Baptism itself is not repeated. But does he say only, “You were washed”? No: “You were sanctified.” What does this sanctification mean? First of all, it means separation from a sinful environment and from the world.
God says, “Become holy, for I am holy.” This means, “Separate yourselves,” and, “Touch nothing unclean.” Separate yourselves from the unclean world, from the world that is morally unclean. Secondly, sanctification means acquiring virtue. He also says a third thing—which Saint Cyril does not quote here—“You were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified.” And “you were justified” means that you were acknowledged as children of God. You received divine adoption. Do you see? Baptism, sanctification, adoption. And what were you before? The things I listed for you earlier. What did he list? Immorality in all its forms: fornication, adultery, same-sex acts, effeminacy, men who engage in homosexual acts, as he says there, idolatry, drunkenness, reviling, and so forth.
Such were you. Saint Cyril now makes this observation: “He did not say, ‘Such are some of you,’ but, ‘Such were some of you.’” Paul does not say that some of you are now living in these sins, but that you once were. He says “were,” not “are”—“were.” In modern Greek the same form can sometimes be used for both past and present, which makes the meaning difficult to grasp. That is why I am giving you the ancient text again. He did not say “you are,” but “you were.” In other words, you are not so now; you were so once. “Sin committed in ignorance is forgiven, but persistent wickedness is condemned.”
It is important for us to know this, my beloved: we are all sinners. All of us, every one of us, are sinners. And if we had to name our sins one by one, we would certainly have much to say. Whether we acted from ignorance or from negligence, the point is that we must come to metanoia, to repentance. Thank you. Here he says that sin committed in ignorance is forgiven. But persistent wickedness is different. “Persistent” does not simply mean that I have been negligent. Many times we are careless and negligent, and we feel desire for our sins—we love our sins. Do you know how much we love them? Like our own children, and even more. We do not want to part from our sins. They torment us, yet we love them. We caress our passions and our pleasures.
We love them. Our pleasures torment us, yet we love them. But if, with full awareness and deliberate intent, I say, “I insist on having what I want—this sin,” then beyond doubt I no longer have repentance, and I am condemned. So he is not speaking of mere negligence, because, as I told you, human weakness exists. I want to repent; I struggle; I cut away something, even if it is nothing very great. At least I am on the road of repentance. But allow me to ask just this: why should I not repent more quickly? There are so many blessings for me to enjoy if I repent sooner. Do you think your pleasures give you joy? They do not.
What does pleasure give? Sweet pleasure gives bitterness. Taste instead the joy of virtue; once you experience it, you will see how beautiful it is. Wonderful! But if I love my sins in the sense that my deliberate intention is evil, and I insist, “No, this is what I want,” then there is condemnation. Would you like another example? If you asked, by way of interpretation, “What is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit?” I would answer, “It is precisely this: persistence, the conscious persistence in sin.” It is when I knowingly persist in sin. Thank you.
Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, which the Lord Himself says will be forgiven neither in this age nor in the age to come, is what is called the unforgivable sin. Let me put it this way: What is the unforgivable sin? Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. What is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit? Sin that is unrepented of and persistently embraced. Let us proceed to the ninth paragraph.
“As the glory of your Baptism, you have the Only-Begotten Son of God Himself. What need have I, then, to speak of a mere man? John is great, but what is he beside the Lord? The voice is mighty, but what is it beside the Word (Logos)? The herald is most excellent, but what is he beside the King? He who baptizes with water is good, but what is he beside the One who baptizes in the Holy Spirit and fire?” Here, allow me to say something that I have often noticed: the Fathers of our Church certainly had many different kinds of people before them.
In this particular case, Saint Cyril had before him candidates for Baptism—that is, catechumens.
They differed widely in education and age. They came from every level. And although the Fathers always gave the greatest weight to the substance of what they taught, they did not neglect beauty and elegance of speech. I do not know whether you noticed the brief passage I have just read to you. The same is true throughout the text, indeed throughout all the catechetical lectures. What beauty it possesses! Beautiful contrasts, beautiful turns of phrase. They dearly loved beauty of expression, and they cultivated their speech. We do not have this today. It is a pity, truly a pity. We have fallen into a dreadful dullness of expression. If you take a look at the literary works that...
They are produced by the shovelful, sold by weight, like old, outdated newspapers once sold—and still sold—for making paper bags or wrapping things. That, my beloved, is more or less what modern literature is like: thin and cold. That is why such works do not live; they die. They appear today, make a small impression, sell perhaps one or two thousand copies, and then die. They have no life. But works of true worth retain their worth. Let us translate the passage so that you may enjoy it a little, as far as its beauty can be conveyed in translation. “As the glory of your Baptism, you have the Only-Begotten Son of God Himself”—He is the One who baptizes you. Why, then, do you speak to me about a mere man?
I spoke to you about John. John is great, but how can he be compared with the Lord? His voice is mighty, but compared with what? How can it be compared with the Word—Word with a capital W? One has a mighty voice, but who is the Other?
In the preceding paragraphs, Saint Cyril spoke about the great worth of Baptism. He said that if Baptism had no great worth, it would not have been entrusted to the greatest man in history—particularly in the history of God’s dealings with His people, that is, in the history of...
the people of God. And even more than this, since he was the greatest within that history, he was certainly also the greatest in the whole history of the world. This man is John the Baptist, the “greatest among those born of women,” whom we discussed last time. If, then, Baptism was entrusted to John, the “greatest among those born of women,” the greatest man ever born of a woman, this means that Baptism must have immense worth, since it was John’s principal work. Saint Cyril now makes a further comparison, because we have two baptisms: the baptism of John and the Baptism of the Lord. John stands at the boundary between the Old Testament and the New. Where the Old ends, the New begins. Where does the Old Testament end? With John the Baptist. Where does the New Testament begin? With John the Baptist.
Thus, Saint John stands at the boundary. One foot is in the Old Testament and the other in the New Testament. He is, so to speak, a person who shares in both. He is a great person, unimaginably great. That is why our Church places Saint John to the right of Christ in the sovereign icons on the iconostasis, where those icons have their liturgical place and use. The Church places him there beside Christ. He is a great person. Yet if we compare John’s baptism with the Baptism of Christ, we find an immense difference. The difference is this: John’s voice is mighty, but it cannot be compared with God the Word (Logos).
John is a most excellent herald, but Christ is the King. Who is greater: the king—or, forgive me, the herald who proclaims the king? In earlier times, as you know, the herald would go ahead to announce the coming of the king. That was the custom in ancient times. So who is greater: the herald who proclaims the king, or the king whom the herald proclaims? He who baptizes with water is good, but can he be compared with the One who baptizes in the Holy Spirit and fire—“in the Holy Spirit and fire”? To help you understand this comparison, my beloved, let us take an incident from the Acts of the Apostles.
About twelve men had appeared in Ephesus. They were spiritually inclined men, and they came before the Apostle Paul. The Apostle Paul asked them, “Were you baptized?” “Yes, we were baptized.” “Did you receive the Holy Spirit?” “What is that?” they replied. “We have never even heard the expression or the words ‘Holy Spirit.’ What is that?” “Into what, then, were you baptized?” the Apostle Paul asked. They answered, “Into John’s baptism.” Then Paul laid his hands upon these twelve or so men.
The Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in other tongues; in other words, the event of Pentecost was manifested among those twelve men. This account in the Acts of the Apostles shows the difference between the two baptisms. What was John’s baptism? John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance. It was not the Baptism that grants forgiveness of sins. By confessing their sins in the water as they were baptized, the people confirmed and openly declared their repentance. To help you understand: suppose I do something wrong to another person and do not go to confess it to him. I have wronged someone, but I do not go and acknowledge what I did.
What does the other person say? “But he did not come and tell me why he did it. How can I forgive him or accept him?” It does not matter whether the other person accepts me or not, or whether he forgives me or not, if I go and say to him, “Forgive me. I committed this sin against you; I harmed you and caused you sorrow.” Regardless of whether the other person forgives me, what have I done by saying this? I have made my repentance known. I have openly declared my repentance. So, my dear friends, John’s baptism is a baptism of repentance. Christian Baptism is a Baptism of forgiveness—certainly of repentance as well, but also of the forgiveness of sins, both ancestral sin and personal sins.
Third—and most important—it is a Baptism of adoption. In Baptism we are adopted as children of God. This is why, a little further on, we shall see what Saint Cyril says: no one enters the Kingdom of God without being baptized, for only the children of God may enter the Kingdom of God, and in Baptism we receive this adoption. Perhaps we have not noticed this or understood it; indeed, I would say that we do not know it: through Baptism we are adopted and become gods by grace, because we become children of God. We tend to place greater emphasis on the forgiveness of our sins...
...and less on our adoption. But Saint Cyril continues: “The Savior baptized the Apostles with the Holy Spirit and fire, when suddenly there came from heaven a sound like the rushing of a mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues as of fire, and one rested upon each of them, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit.” Christ, he says, baptized His Apostles with the Holy Spirit and fire. If you pay attention...
Let us pause for a moment over the words “with the Holy Spirit and fire.” We might call this a hendiadys: one and the same reality expressed in two words. He baptizes them with the Holy Spirit and with fire; the two refer to the same thing. If we do not understand it as a hendiadys—one reality expressed in two words—then we could take the first as the cause and the second as its effect. Or we could understand them as that which is unseen and that which becomes visible. I prefer this last interpretation: the unseen reality and its visible manifestation. The Book of Acts tells us...
The Holy Spirit rested upon the heads of the Apostles like fire. How, then, could the Holy Spirit be perceived? How could we see Him or apprehend Him, at least through our senses? Something had to appear, and what appeared was like fire. It was not fire, but like fire. Thus, this is the same Holy Spirit manifested in two ways: the Holy Spirit Himself, who is invisible, for no one has ever seen the Holy Spirit. Who has seen Him? He is God. He is God Himself. Can the essence of God be seen? Certainly not. “No one has ever seen God.” How, then, could the Holy Spirit become visible? Only by appearing through something perceptible to the senses.
That perceptible sign was... The Book of Acts rightly uses the word “as”: “as of fire.” And He also appeared through something else: the sound of a mighty rushing wind, though not a leaf was stirred. There was the sound of a violent wind, but it was not actually wind. That is why it says, “like the rushing of a wind.” These two signs addressed two senses, hearing and sight, so that the testimony to the presence of the Holy Spirit might be established by two witnesses and believed objectively, rather than merely as a subjective experience.
If I tell you, “You have received the Holy Spirit,” how can you know this? You would need some testimony. That testimony was given through these two witnesses: the fire and the sound. And Christ baptized His disciples with the Holy Spirit and fire. Does this mean only the Apostles? There is something more: all the others as well—all one hundred and twenty who were in the upper room—were baptized in this special and unique way at Pentecost, in the Spirit of God and in fire, without being baptized in water. This is the only such instance in the history of the Church. Later...
The Apostle Paul, who would be called to become an Apostle of Christ—even though he would surpass the other Apostles in his labors, as he himself says and as we also know from history, for he labored far more than all the others—was nevertheless baptized in the usual manner, my dear friends, just like all believers. You know that he was baptized by Ananias, a Christian in Damascus, after all those wondrous events—his blindness and everything else with which you are familiar. Thus we see here that the Spirit of God comes together with the water. Christ baptizes all Christians...
...in water and the Spirit. Not in water alone, but in water and the Spirit. Not in the Spirit alone, but in water and the Spirit. We need both, because this is how He wills it. Of course, it is not simply a matter of saying, “This is how He wills it.” We have explained some of the reasons, and next time we shall explain more, as Saint Cyril leads us still deeper into the theology of Baptism. Let us proceed to the tenth paragraph: “If anyone does not receive Baptism, he has no salvation.” Whoever is not baptized, whoever does not receive Baptism, has no salvation. Baptism is the gateway into the Church.
Saint Cyprian—rather, forgive me, Tertullian; and also Saint Cyprian—says, “Outside the Church there is no salvation.” This is both highly characteristic and profoundly important. But what does it mean to be “inside the Church”? It means that I have entered through Her door, through Her gateway. And the gateway into the Church is Baptism. This is why, when a newborn child is in danger of dying, we hasten to baptize the child. This is also why the parents bear serious sin if they had the opportunity to baptize their child but failed to do so. Allow me to comment on this, because it is useful, and please remember these things and tell them to your spouses.
Tell others as well, because they may one day face a similar situation and need to know what to do. If a child is stillborn, of course, the question does not arise. The child was born dead, and a dead person cannot be baptized. But if the child is born alive and begins to die immediately after birth, the nurses are generally aware of what must be done. Yet I have found that they are not always fully informed. There is what is called an emergency “air baptism.” Because Baptism is so great a Mystery, without which, as we said earlier, no one enters the Kingdom of God, the Church has granted the right...
...for any layperson to perform the Mystery of Baptism in this unique case—the only Mystery for which this is permitted—provided that the layperson has also been baptized and is an Orthodox Christian. Only then may that person perform the Mystery of Baptism, whether man or woman. This is the one and only exception. Suppose a nurse takes the child there in the maternity ward; who else is likely to be present when a newborn child is dying? It may be a doctor, a nurse, or a midwife. The person takes the child and performs an “air baptism,” meaning that the air is treated as though it were water.
The person says, “The servant of God George is baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” The three immersions and emersions are made in the air. Now I ask: is this considered Baptism? If the child dies, the child is baptized. Everything else in Baptism forms its surrounding rite. The core, the very heart of the Mystery of Baptism, is the formula I just recited: “The servant of God, N., is baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” This core comes from the Gospel according to Matthew, which ends with the words: “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Christ Himself said this to His disciples.
Here is my point: nearly every child is born in a hospital or at home. It is rare for a child to be born on a bus, in a taxi, or on a mountain and also to be at the point of death—very rare indeed. Most children are born in a hospital or at home. Is there not a glass of water available? We need not baptize the child in a baptismal font or place the child in a basin of water. But a glass of water would be far better. We can dip our fingers into the water and sprinkle the child, so that water actually falls upon the child rather than merely air being used. I ask you to remember this: because the custom known as “air baptism” has become established, most nurses do not think to use a little water. Yet it is very simple—just dip the fingers into a glass of water.
We sprinkle three times, saying: “The servant of God George is baptized in the name of the Father”—and we sprinkle—“and of the Son”—and we sprinkle—“and of the Holy Spirit”—and we sprinkle. This is equivalent to immersion in water. Suppose the child is in an incubator because it was born prematurely. The child is alive but in danger and may die. While the child is in the incubator, there may be time to perform the full Baptism. Sometimes the priest may not know how this is to be done. If he does not, we should explain it to him. Do you know what you should say? Call him, and he should bring either the baptismal font or a small basin filled with water. He will read the entire service of Baptism—the whole service.
After performing the whole Mystery—all the preliminary rites and the exorcisms over the water—he will take a small piece of cotton. Then, provided of course that the doctors give permission, arrangements can be made accordingly. He will dip the cotton into the baptismal water in the small font, put his hand into the incubator, and anoint the child here, wetting the child’s forehead. “The servant of God is baptized.” At the first anointing he says, “in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” In this way he applies the water, so to speak, anointing the child’s forehead with it. This is a complete Baptism. If the child survives, the child will not be baptized again.
After an “air baptism,” however, we repeat the Baptism. Although Baptism may not ordinarily be repeated, that was an emergency Baptism, and so we repeat it. But when it is performed with water in the manner I have described, the Baptism is not repeated. Furthermore, if a child has received only an “air baptism” and, if he is a boy, later wishes to become a clergyman, he cannot become one, because he received what is, so to speak, an incomplete Baptism. Please keep these things in mind. There is also something else, because this issue arises very often today. Someone says, “You know, our baby was born...” The gentleman who said this may even be present here, but that does not matter; let him hear it once again. “The baby was born in the summer, and the godmother will come...”
“...to baptize the child next summer, because she is—who knows—at the North Pole or in Lapland.” Why wait? Must we bind ourselves to a particular person for sentimental or, let us say, traditional reasons, because this godmother baptized me, my grandfather, my grandmother, and my great-grandmother? Why must that same person baptize the child? Meanwhile, the child is deprived of Holy Baptism. Second, the child is in danger of dying—how can we know otherwise? And not only from illness, but from an accident. The child may fall from the cradle and be killed. We may wake in the morning and find the child dead. A cat may sit on the child’s face. These are unlikely things, yet they do happen. The household cat may climb into the cradle, curl up on the child’s face, and fall asleep.
The child may suffocate, or may vomit and inhale it into the lungs and choke—any one of a thousand things may happen. But the gravest danger, people say, is that the child may die unbaptized. Yet the most important question is this: since infant Baptism has long been established, why should the child not be baptized promptly and receive Holy Communion? The child cannot receive Holy Communion without first being baptized. Do you not think, my dear friends, that we ought to know these things, keeping in mind this wonderful and fundamental truth: “Whoever does not receive Baptism has no salvation”? Whoever does not receive Baptism has no salvation.
Except only in the case of martyrs.
Holy Scripture says: “Martyrdom is also a baptism,” for the Savior says, “Are you able to drink the cup that I drink and to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” And indeed, the martyrs confess their faith, having become a spectacle to the world, to angels, and to men. You too will soon make your confession, but it is not yet time for you to hear about these things. Since the hour is late, I will not translate the passage for you, but will simply explain it. There is one exception: the case of the martyr. What does that mean? If someone who has not been baptized confesses Christ and, at that very moment, is put to death for that confession, he is baptized in his own blood, not in water. Do you know how often this has happened? Countless times. Take, for example, executioners who were torturing a martyr. Saint Charalambos was being flayed by his executioners, yet he remained unshaken. The two executioners were struck with fear.
When they saw this elderly Saint enduring those dreadful torments with strength beyond human nature, while forgiving those around him, they were shaken to the core. The grace of God came upon them, and the executioners said to the tyrant who was present, watching the martyrdom of Saint Charalambos, “We too are Christians.” Only a few minutes earlier, they had been his executioners. But as soon as they confessed their faith, they were put to death together with Saint Charalambos. Did they have time to be baptized? No. Let me give you another example. In that first case there was blood; in this one there was no blood: the Holy Forty Martyrs. Yet their death was still a martyr’s death.
You know the story of the Holy Martyrs. One of the forty could no longer endure it. He lost heart and came out of the water. Meanwhile, the guard who was watching over the forty men in the waters of Sebaste on March 9 saw a vision in the heavens: forty crowns. “What is this?” he wondered. Then he saw one man leave the company of the forty and go away to warm himself, and he saw an angel take that man’s crown and carry it away into the depths of heaven. He understood—he understood at once—and immediately the guard cried out, “I too am a Christian!” He threw himself into the lake and died with the thirty-nine Saints, so once again they were forty. He was baptized through his martyrdom.
Saint Cyril explains it in this way: Christ said, “I have a baptism with which I must be baptized.” That baptism is His martyrdom, the Cross. This is also why, he says—and here he offers another interpretation, though the Church herself is also signified—water and blood flowed from Christ’s side: so that in times of peace for the Church, people might be baptized with water, as Christ commanded, while in times of persecution, they might be baptized in their own blood. This, he says, is why blood and water flowed from Christ’s side. We can see, then, my dear friends, just how truly necessary Baptism is. But concerning the martyrs, “It is not yet time for you to hear about these things.”
The time has not yet come for me to speak to you about them. It is as though Saint Cyril were telling the catechumens that there was still more to be said, including the questions I mentioned earlier. But he also meant this: the time had not yet come for them to stand as martyrs. And I would say the same to us, my dear friends. Do you realize how far we are from being able to stand as true martyrs? We have a long road ahead of us. Let us begin by putting our Baptism to work in our lives, because that is what we must achieve: we must make full use of our Baptism. Then, my dear friends, we open the way and gain the possibility, if God permits it, of one day becoming martyrs ourselves.

Μετά τι γίνονταν τα κρέατα; Τα κρέατα μετά μοιράζονταν. Έτρωγε ο κόσμος. Αλλά αυτοί αθετούσαν την έννοια της θυσίας και της λατρείας του Θεού με τον τρόπον αυτόν. Πήγαινε λοιπόν ο κόσμος και του έλεγε: «Ξέρεις, το και το και το και το». Ο Ηλί εμάλωνε τα παιδιά του και έλεγε: «Όχι, παιδιά μου, όχι, παιδιά μου, μην το κάνετε αυτό, γιατί είναι κακό». Αυτοί επέμεναν. Στο τέλος ο Θεός ετιμώρησε τον Ηλί και τα παιδιά του με θάνατο. Δηλαδή, εννοώ βίαιον θάνατον. Εφονεύθησαν και οι τρεις. Αλλά θα μου πείτε: τότε τι έπρεπε να κάνει ο ταλαίπωρος εκείνος ο Ηλί, ο οποίος ήταν καλός άνθρωπος, ήταν ευσεβής άνθρωπος ο Ηλί; Τι έπρεπε να κάνει; Δεν εμάλωνε τα παιδιά του; Τα μάλωνε. Τα συνεβούλευε; Τα συνεβούλευε. Τι έπρεπε να κάνει;
απαξιείς να δώσεις αισθητές τροφές στους φτωχούς. Με άλλα λόγια, έχεις μια ζυγαριά και πρέπει να βάλεις κάτι από εδώ για να ζυγίσεις κάτι από εκεί. Εσύ θες να πάρεις πνευματικά πράγματα και η ζυγαριά που θέλεις να κλίνει με βάρος προς τα κάτω, να πάρεις τη χάρη του Θεού. Ναι, αλλά στο άλλο τάσι της ζυγαριάς, για να το πετύχεις αυτό, πρέπει να βάλεις υλικά πράγματα. Εδώ λέγει τροφές προς τους φτωχούς, για να κατεβεί και το άλλο τάσι και να ισορροπήσει. Δηλαδή, με αναλογία θα πρέπει να δώσεις για να πάρεις. Και εκείνα που θα δώσεις συγκρίνονται με εκείνα που θα πάρεις;
Σας είπα για τον Ιωάννη. Μεγάλος ο Ιωάννης, αλλά πώς μπορεί να συγκριθεί με τον Κύριον; Μεγαλόφωνη η φωνή του, αλλά ως προς τι; Τι μπορεί να συγκριθεί ως προς τον Λόγο, λάμδα κεφαλαίο; Ο ένας μεγαλόφωνος, ο άλλος είναι ποιος;
