Summary

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem directs catechumens to Scripture to understand why God grants baptismal grace through water. Israel’s passage through the Red Sea and the guiding cloud prefigure Christian baptism by water and the Holy Spirit, delivering humanity from sin as Israel was delivered from Pharaoh. Water also accompanies God’s covenants with Noah and Israel, and Elijah’s crossing of the Jordan symbolizes that entry into God’s Kingdom comes through baptism.

My beloved, we are now in paragraph five of Saint Cyril’s third catechetical lecture. As you will remember, Saint Cyril has spoken about Baptism, and little by little he will give us a fuller picture of the Mystery of Baptism.

He writes: “If anyone wishes to know why grace is given through water and not through any of the other elements, let him take up the divine Scriptures, and he will find the answer.” If anyone wishes to know why water is used in the Mystery of Baptism, and why God’s grace is given through it rather than through some other material, he need only search the Scriptures, and there he will find the answer. And indeed, Saint Cyril himself makes a brief survey of them to explain why water is used in the Mystery of Baptism. Before we continue, I would tell you that the theology of water in Holy Scripture is very vast and mysterious. Here Saint Cyril will try to say a few things about it. Naturally, he does not exhaust the subject, because, as I have told you, it is immense. Besides, his catechumens have only a limited capacity to understand. They have not yet entered the Church and do not know many things. Saint Cyril will return to the Mystery of Baptism, though he will not return specifically to the theology of water. I only want to tell you that the theology of water is indeed exceedingly profound. And he writes: “For water is something great.” Water is indeed something very great.

“Of the four visible elements of the world, it is the finest.” In other words, water is the finest of the four elements of the world. Of course, whenever we read an ancient text—whether a secular work, written outside the Church, or an ecclesiastical text—we must not forget that the sacred writers will naturally use the scientific or philosophical knowledge available in their own age. We must remember this, so that we do not judge them unfairly. In the same way, if we wished to write a theological work today, we would naturally draw upon some of the established technical and scientific knowledge of our own time.

That is only natural. What was the accepted view in those days concerning the composition of the world? It was believed that the world consisted of four elements: water and fire...

Well... air and dry land, meaning the ground, the earth. According to the understanding of the ancients, these four elements made up the earth and the heavens—the universe. Today we have a different picture, though perhaps not so very different if we were to examine the matter in detail.

The picture is different, yet in a sense it is the same. The difference is simply that the modern picture is more detailed, whereas the ancient one is concise, a summary. More specifically, today we would say that the elements composing the world are those found in the periodic table. That is all. The first is hydrogen; the second is something else; the fiftieth is another; and the ninetieth-something is yet another. These are the familiar elements we learn about in chemistry, the elements that make up the world. But people in those days clearly did not possess the knowledge of physics and chemistry that we have today.

It was therefore only to be expected that...

Thank you.

How could anyone in those days have known about hydrogen and oxygen? Instead, the text speaks of water. And when it uses the word “fire,” fire is, of course, simply a manifestation of energy; it is energy, just as electricity is. You know that in the language of the New Testament, electricity was called fire. It is extremely important, my beloved, to understand all these details in Holy Scripture. It is very important indeed. Then, when we read Holy Scripture, we understand it and delight in it. There are books on these subjects. For example, there is a book entitled The Plants Found in Holy Scripture, covering both the New and Old Testaments. It is an entire volume. There are books on the plants of Holy Scripture and on the animals of Holy Scripture. This is very important. So then, fire, as you will know...

When it appears in the form we ordinarily recognize as fire, it is called fire. But lightning is also called fire, and lightning truly is fire in the sense that it is energy. It is electricity; it is energy. And do you know what the whole visible phenomenon of lightning is called? “Coals of fire.” That is how lightning is described in Holy Scripture: burning coals. All this shows that, because this was the knowledge available to people at that time, God does not prevent the natural knowledge of an age from being included in His book. He does not prevent it, because it would be strange for a divinely inspired author—who does not err in matters of divine truth—to write using the scientific terms of some far-distant age. Do you know what that would be like? I will give you an image, and it may seem strange. Imagine a little child, the very moment it is born from its mother, saying, “Good morning, Mama.” It would be monstrous. It would be just as monstrous for a sacred writer in the age of Moses to write in the terminology of our own age. It would be strange, unnatural, and completely out of place. The manner in which he writes, however, will ultimately not be erroneous. That is the important point. He will use the knowledge available in his own age, but he will not be in error. Thus, in essence—in essence...

I emphasize the words “in essence”—the four elements of creation, when analyzed, are simply what the people of that time were able to know of the familiar elements we now find in the periodic table. And, if you wish, this includes not only matter but also energy, because the universe consists of nothing other than matter in the form of energy, or energy in the form of matter—whichever way you prefer to put it. Thus Saint Cyril says here that water is something great and that it is the finest of the four elements composing the world. Now, why is it the finest? I was telling you on a previous occasion that...

The philosophers also spoke about water in this way. Of course, perhaps they did not know very much. They could not have known that it consists of two gases, but they could observe its action within creation: they saw that water shapes the earth. They approached this from a philosophical and scientific perspective. In Holy Scripture, however, we encounter it neither as philosophy nor as science, but as revelation: water is the foundation of creation because it contains hydrogen. And today, as we know, hydrogen is the first element and is involved in the formation of all the other elements.

In the periodic table, hydrogen is number one. To put it very roughly—do not misunderstand me—as its nucleus is enriched with protons... well, never mind. As its nucleus is enriched, it gives us the other elements. Therefore, all these ninety-something elements are nothing other than the first element, hydrogen. So it is entirely right to say that water is the first element. Entirely right. But how could the divinely inspired Moses have written this? How could he have expressed it? By writing “hydrogen”? As I said before, that would have been monstrous. How, then, does Moses write it? “In the beginning God made the heaven and the earth. And the earth was invisible and unformed, and the Spirit of God moved over the water.” Thank you.

The Holy Spirit moved over the waters. The important point is that water is mentioned first, and light afterward. A little further on it says: “And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.” You see, then, that water is a fundamental, foundational element. The philosophers outside Holy Scripture would also describe it as a fundamental element. As such, we might say, it stands at the beginning of creation. Of course, today we know that light stands at the beginning of creation. We must not forget that. Yet in the way Holy Scripture presents it, water is placed first and light afterward. But pay attention: this is not an error. No, it is not an error at all.

It is simply the way the account is presented. Follow carefully. The work of creation begins with the words, “And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light,” and the first day has already begun. Water, therefore, is placed outside the six days of creation. What does this mean? It means that in the first verse—where the subject of water is also introduced—Moses gives us a general picture by way of a preface: “I am now going to speak to you about creation, and more particularly about the earth, whose foundation is water.” Then he begins the actual account. But that account does not begin with water. It begins with light, because light is the energy which, under the conditions God granted to exist, became matter.

Today we have accomplished this in the laboratory; today we repeat it ourselves. From the energy of light, or from energy in general, we produce matter. And conversely, from matter we produce energy. This second process, indeed, is not difficult; it is something repeatedly done. Thus, the first verse is a preface to the whole account of creation, which Moses will then describe for us in detail. Water, therefore, becomes the foundation once energy has become matter. From the moment energy became matter, with light as its cause...

We can speak of everything that exists in creation, on our earth, beginning with what? With water. For this reason, water also possesses a profound theology. A very profound theology. You will see this as we continue.

“Heaven is the dwelling place of the angels, yet the heavens were made from the waters.” The dwelling place of the angels is heaven, but the heavens came from the waters. Moses says so beautifully that the waters were above the earth. What does it mean that the waters were above the earth? They had taken the form of clouds. When Saint Cyril says here that “the heavens are the dwelling place of the angels,” we naturally see once again the limited conception of the heavens available at that time.

Could the heavens—the universe, the unfathomable depths of the universe—ever have been known to the ancients? He therefore speaks in general terms, saying that heaven is the dwelling place of the angels. Then he continues: “And the earth is the dwelling place of mankind, yet it too came from the waters.” The earth, which is the habitation of mankind, also came from the waters. Notice that he says, “from the waters.” Do you know why? Because the entire surface of the earth was covered with water, and afterward the dry land began to appear. That is why he says, “from the waters.” Then he adds: “And before all the created things fashioned during the six days.” The Greek word for “created things” is spelled with a single nu and comes from the verb meaning “to come into being,” not from the verb meaning “to beget.”

Before all the things that came into being during the six days described by Moses in his account of creation, it is written: “The Spirit of God moved over the water.” Why did the Spirit of God move over the water and not over the dry land? Because it was there, in the waters, that life first appeared.

In the waters. Are you struck by what science tells us? We do not need science; I mention it only so that you may see the agreement. You know that science tells us that life first appeared in the waters. Indeed, it was there that life was brooded into being. That is a beautiful verb, and it comes from the movement of the Holy Spirit. Life was brooded within the waters. Why do I say “brooded”? In simple language, it was hatched, as a hen broods over her eggs and hatches chicks from them. Life was brooded within the water, because Scripture says, “The Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” He was hovering. Since the Holy Spirit appears to us in the New Testament in the form of a dove, He is pictured hovering over the waters, flying above them, as though embracing all the waters of the earth. And by embracing all the waters of the earth, He brought about, so to speak, a brooding, a hatching, from which life emerged. It is a very, very beautiful image. Truly beautiful.

One sees God embracing lifeless matter so that life might come forth from it—not automatically, but through this brooding. What does that mean? We understand nothing about the actual process from this verb, “to brood,” by which life came forth. What God did to bring forth life is His own affair. He knows. How did it happen? We use the verb only so that we can speak about it. How it happened is known to God alone. “Water is the beginning of the world, and the Jordan is the beginning of the Gospels.” Thus, water is the beginning of the world, and the Jordan is the beginning of the Gospel, because Christ was baptized there and, of course, from there begins the Mystery of

our salvation. When Mark the Evangelist says, “The beginning of the Gospel,” and then, “John came baptizing,” and so forth, there the Gospel begins. In the examples that follow, Saint Cyril uses these very beautiful literary contrasts. Since these contrasts will inevitably be lost in the course of our explanation—I will end up making them disappear, whether I wish to or not—I want to point them out to you. He proceeds through pairs of contrasts, a literary form also found in Holy Scripture. You will encounter it in the Wisdom of Sirach, the Wisdom of Solomon, and Proverbs. In pairs

two truths are presented—sometimes one truth in both its positive and negative aspects, or even two different subjects. When it is not one subject viewed from two sides, it may be two subjects expressed in contrast. Now pay attention here: “Water is the beginning of the world.” Thus, the world began from water. I explained that to you earlier. But allow me to take the analysis a little further, from the perspective of nature. The Greek word for “world,” kosmos, means not only creation but also adornment. If you could ask the earth what God used to adorn it, it would answer: water. Water is the great shaper. I do not think you realize how greatly it shapes

the surface of the earth. What does water not shape? Mountains, valleys, ravines, caves. And even within the earth itself, in its depths, you can see what water forms there: wonders. One beholds all these things shaped by water and is amazed. If there were no water upon the earth, the earth’s surface would always retain the same form. But through the presence of water, the earth continually reshapes its face and appears completely new—completely and constantly changing. Water truly is the adornment

of the surface of the earth, and also of the earth’s depths.

Therefore, water is the beginning of the world, and the Jordan is the beginning of the Gospels. Indeed, after His Baptism—when Christ was baptized, naturally, in the waters of the Jordan—the Gospel began. He went into the wilderness, and after forty days He came among the people, preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom. “Freedom for Israel from Pharaoh through the sea, and freedom from sins for the world through the washing of water by the word of God.” How was Israel freed from Pharaoh? Through the sea. Israel crossed the Red Sea and escaped from Pharaoh’s clutches. This should not surprise us.

All the Fathers—and especially the hymnographers, who generally draw upon the Fathers—see the Red Sea as a prefiguration of Baptism. This is also scriptural; the Apostle Paul says it, and they take their starting point from him. You will see that they all refer to the Red Sea as the type that prefigures Baptism. The people of Israel passed through it. What does it mean that they “passed through”? They were baptized in the Red Sea. The Apostle Paul says that they were baptized in the water of the Red Sea and in the cloud.

The cloud that followed the people was luminous by night, making their entire encampment bright and pleasant so that they would not be surrounded by harsh darkness. By day it shaded them from the scorching rays of the sun, so that they might journey more comfortably through the wilderness. Of course, I hardly need tell you that this pillar is understood to be Jesus Christ following His people. Did you know that? This is Jesus Christ following His people by day and by night. But it is also the Holy Spirit, who covers and follows His people. For the people of Christ, the Son, are also the people of the Father and the people of the Holy Spirit. This, then, is the cloud

and the symbol of the Holy Spirit. It was visible, just as the dove was visible. But the dove was not itself the Holy Spirit; the Holy Spirit appeared as though He were a dove—“as though,” meaning “like.” And so, my dear ones, we see this: the people were baptized in the water of the Red Sea and in the cloud. Do you know what this means? It is what Christ would later say: no one enters the Kingdom of God except through water and the Spirit. Through water and the Spirit. Here is the ancient type of Baptism: the Red Sea and the cloud, which is the symbol of the Holy Spirit. It is astonishing. And further,

did you notice the contrast once again? I will read it again, so that I may preserve it as much as possible: “Freedom for Israel from Pharaoh through the sea, and freedom from sins for the world through the washing of water by the word of God.” What is this washing of water? It is Baptism. Baptism is called a washing, and it now saves the world from sins by the word of God. One is the type; the other is its fulfillment. Here I would like to dwell on one very short phrase: “by the word of God.” Do you know what this means? It addresses what our rationalism so often tells us—the very thing Saint Cyril mentioned last time and that I explained to you. “But what, then, is this water?”

“Are my sins really going to disappear through water? What sort of thing is this?” Let me repeat what we said last time: “What kind of foolish masquerade is this?” Those were the words of a modern university professor: “A masquerade.” Once, as you know, Naaman the Syrian—a Syrian leper, not a Jew—came to be healed by the Prophet Elisha. During the wars between the northern kingdom of Israel and the Syrians, a young girl had been taken captive and became a servant in the household of Naaman the Syrian, who was a military commander. When her master became a leper, she said to him, “Why do you keep suffering like this? In my homeland

there is a great prophet named Elisha. Go to him, and he will make you well.” Christ later mentioned this man to the Jews, saying that he had shown greater faith than they had; when the people of Nazareth heard this in His hometown, they became angry. Were there no lepers, He said, in the days of the Prophet Elisha? Why, then, was Naaman the Syrian healed? So, my dear ones, Naaman the Syrian arrived with a large retinue and many gifts. The prophet did not even come out to meet him, but sent instructions that he should go to the Jordan River and wash himself seven times. He was to enter the river and come out, enter and come out, enter and come out. The prophet did not show his face. Naaman became very angry

and said, “The Jordan? What is the Jordan? It is a wretched little river. We have better rivers in my country.” He even mentions the name of a Syrian river there—I do not remember it, so let us simply call it such-and-such a river. “It is far better than the Jordan. What is so special about the Jordan?” In anger, he gathered up his gifts and everything else and left. His attendants said to him, “Master, the prophet did not ask you to do anything difficult. You have only to try it.” “But, my friend, what could there possibly be in the water of the Jordan? What could it have? It is only a river. What does it possess?” “Master, the prophet told you to do it. Try it. What do you have to lose?” Apparently, there was humility within him. Humility is a great thing, a very great thing.

He went to the river, entered it seven times, and came out seven times. What, then, healed Naaman the Syrian of his leprosy? It was the word of the prophet. The prophet had spoken. In the same way, what is it that ultimately grants us forgiveness of sins in the waters of Baptism? Christ said it. Saint Cyril says here, “by the word of God.” That is all. Do you hear? When that flesh-devouring logismos—that intrusive thought which consumes a person—comes and says, “What is this water, and what can it mean?” give it the answer: God said it. And since Christ said that the human person is saved through water and the Spirit, the matter is settled. Christ rose from the dead. Since He rose, He is God. He said it; the matter is settled. He knows. That is the end of it. I know nothing. He said it. The same is true, my dear ones, of the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist—I mention this while we have the opportunity. Let no one say, “But my sense of taste tells me that this is wine and bread.” He said: “Take, eat; this is My Body; this is My Blood.” This takes place by the word of Christ. He does it. He knows. Do you imagine that when the disciples took and drank from that cup, or ate from the bread the Lord gave them,

they felt in their mouths that they were eating flesh or drinking human blood? I do not suppose you think that. To the disciples’ sense of taste, it remained bread and wine, but Christ said, “This is My Body, and this is My Blood.” How can I know that what Christ said is true? Because Christ rose from the dead and sent the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost. I therefore know that Christ is God, and whatever He said is exactly so. I do not understand it, but it is a Mystery. In the same way, the prophet said, “Go to the river seven times—not six, not eight, but seven times—immerse yourself and rise from the water, and you will be healed.” And here Christ says, “Go to the baptismal font, be baptized, and your sins will remain there.”

This is how the whole Church understood it; this is how the Apostle Paul interprets it; and this understanding has continued to this day: Baptism, by the word of God and by the word of Christ, is the washing that grants forgiveness of sins. Water is a great thing. We shall truly see this as we continue. Saint Cyril tells us that water is used as an element of covenant.

He mentions two covenants. After the flood—because we have two covenants as well—a covenant was established with Noah, and a covenant with Israel.

There is an error in the punctuation here.

An error in the punctuation. “After the flood, a covenant was established with Noah.” We should put a full stop there, though the text has none. “A covenant with Israel from Mount Sinai, but with water, scarlet wool, and hyssop.” That is, when Noah came out of the Ark with his family and his children, God made a covenant, an agreement, with him. First, He blessed him. This was a renewal of the blessing He had given to our first-created parents. Once again God said, “Be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth, and have dominion over it.” And God also said:

“I will set My bow in the sky as a sign”—the familiar rainbow. From now until the end of the world, there will never again be a flood; that is, mankind will never again be destroyed by a flood. Just a brief interpretive observation. You may ask me, “Did the rainbow not exist before the flood?” Undoubtedly it did. What is the rainbow? It is simply the refraction of light through droplets of water suspended in the atmosphere. That is why it appears after rain, or while it is raining, under particular conditions, when the sun is at an angle.

The rainbow is curved, as you know, because the sun is round. It is as simple as that. That is why the rainbow is curved. So was there no rain before the flood? Was there no sun? Did the refraction of light through water not exist? Undoubtedly it did. Why, then, does God say, “I establish My bow, the rainbow, as a sign”? My beloved, God simply makes His covenant through a natural phenomenon. I say it again: He makes His covenant, His agreement, His promise, through a natural phenomenon. Yet the rainbow, in its essence, is light and water.

So once again God makes use not only of the flood itself, but also of the rainbow, which too is water—water and light. And at Sinai God made His other covenant with Israel, when He gave the Covenant, the Law, and said, “I will be your God, and you will be My people.” What did Moses use? Water, scarlet wool, and hyssop: “with water, scarlet wool, and hyssop.” As I told you last time, hyssop is a plant that was used for sprinkling, rather like the basil we use. So these things...

...are also mentioned in the Epistle to the Hebrews, chapter 9, verse 19. “Elijah is taken up, but not without water; for first he crosses the Jordan, and only then rides his chariot through the heavens.” Elijah was taken up into heaven, but he was not taken up before he had crossed the water—the water of the Jordan River. You know that Elijah crossed the Jordan after dividing the waters of the river. So first he crossed, and then he was taken up, after passing over the Jordan River. What a beautiful type, a prophetic image. We will not enter the Kingdom of God unless we pass through the Jordan River—that is, through Baptism. This is what the Lord said: no one enters the Kingdom of God except through water and the Spirit.

Is one tempted by this language or not? How beautiful the old form of our language is! As for the language we speak today, I do not know—if you told me that we use about three thousand words, I would say that I fear we use only three hundred. We have impoverished our language terribly. Look at this beautiful phrase: “He crosses the Jordan, and only then rides his chariot through the heavens.” A charioteer is one who mounts and drives a chariot; here, he rides his chariot through the heavens. They will accuse us of being obsessed with antiquity. And yet the language is so beautiful! This is the language that foreigners have loved and still love, with a love that reaches almost to adoration—indeed, to a kind of passionate adoration...

...the Greek language. Yet we have impoverished it, made it crude, and confined ourselves to only three hundred words or so, with which we manage to communicate. Or rather, little by little we may reduce even those to thirty. I am not exaggerating, because television now teaches us to watch and not to speak. And so, little by little, we will begin not to speak, but to grunt.

“First the high priest washes, and then he offers incense. For Aaron first washed, and only then became high priest. How could one who had not first been cleansed with water intercede for others without water? And as a symbol of Baptism, a laver was placed inside the tabernacle.” There was a laver in the tabernacle, and later outside Solomon’s Temple, so that the high priest and the priests could wash. We too wash today. We do not celebrate the Divine Liturgy unless we have first washed. Thus, he says, the high priest first washed and afterward offered incense. How could he possibly cleanse others if he himself was not clean?

And this was the symbol—Saint Cyril says it here: “It was set there as a symbol of Baptism.” The Old Testament laver was the symbol of Baptism. Today, beside the Prothesis, we have a basin, a laver. We do not wash our whole bodies. In those days the high priest and the priests washed themselves completely—the whole body. We wash only our hands, and we even recite a passage from a psalm: “I will wash my hands in innocence, and I will compass Your altar,” and so on. You see, this cannot be disregarded. Indeed, in the Old Testament it says that any priest who did not wash...

...would be punished by being deprived of life. “I will deprive him of life”—that is, he would die. But what does that mean for us today? Will someone die today as a person ordinarily dies? What does it mean? It is a type, a prophetic foreshadowing. Whoever does not wash in the laver of regeneration will die—that is, he will not have life and will not enter the Kingdom of God. Everywhere we encounter types, foreshadowings of a reality and a truth. And now we come to the sixth paragraph: “The end of the Old Testament and the beginning of the New Testament is Baptism.” Baptism was the end of the Old Testament and the beginning of the New Testament.

This is because John is the last prophet of the Old Testament and the first prophet of the New Testament. He stands at the meeting point of the two Testaments, and there, at that meeting point, he baptizes. Therefore Baptism is the final act of the Old Testament and the first act of the New Testament. Would you like us to distinguish the two a little more clearly? The final act of the Old Testament is John baptizing the people with a baptism of metanoia, of repentance. The beginning of the New Testament is John baptizing Jesus Christ in the same river. “For John was the leader...”

“Among those born of women, no one is greater.” There is no one greater among all who have been born of women. “He is the end of the prophets,” the last of the prophets, “for all the prophets and the Law were until John.” They all come to their completion there. “And John is the beginning of the things of the Gospel.” For, as Mark the Evangelist says in the first chapter, in the first verse, “The beginning of the Gospel of Jesus Christ,” followed by, “John appeared in the wilderness, baptizing.” “Even if you speak of Elijah the Tishbite, who was taken up, he is not greater than John.” Even Elijah is not greater than John. “Enoch was translated, but he is not greater than John.”

Enoch was taken alive into heaven, but he is not greater than John. “Moses, the greatest lawgiver, and all the prophets were not greater than John.” Moses and all the prophets were great, but they were not greater than John. “Nor do I dare to compare prophet with prophet. But their Master and ours, the Lord, has declared it.” The Lord—their Lord and our Lord—said it Himself: “Among those born of women, there has not arisen one greater than John.” I am reading quickly and giving you only the translation. It does not say, “among those born of virgins,” but “of women.” Why? Because the comparison is between the great servant and his fellow servants.

“But the surpassing excellence and grace of the Son cannot be compared with that of servants.” The words “among those born of women” refer to the servants being compared. John was born by natural birth. He is therefore the greatest of the prophets, but still “among those born of women,” still compared with other human beings. It did not say “among those born of virgins,” because the One born of a Virgin is the Son, and He alone. He is beyond every comparison; His surpassing excellence and grace are incomparable. “Do you see what a great leader among men God chose for this grace?” Do you see whom God chose to lead so great a grace? “A man without possessions and a lover of the wilderness, yet not a hater of mankind”—a man without possessions...

...who loved the wilderness, but did not hate people. What a precious phrase this is! Some people imagine that monks hate mankind and that they live in the wilderness out of misanthropy. What an immense misunderstanding! My beloved, monasticism goes into the wilderness precisely in order to cultivate true communion with others. This is true even of eremitic monasticism, where no one might ever see an ascetic living alone. He might die alone in the wilderness, with no one even coming to bury him. Yet even there he cultivates the purest communion with others, because he prays continually for all mankind. How beautiful, then, is this phrase: “without possessions and a lover of the wilderness...”

“...not a hater of mankind; feeding on locusts and causing his soul to grow wings.” He ate locusts, and his soul grew wings. What a beautiful word this is: “to grow wings.” He gave wings to his soul. Our iconography depicts Saint John with wings to show that he is an angel—that is, a messenger. In the same way, the ancient Greeks depicted Hermes, the messenger of the gods, with wings on his feet. Wings, then, are the symbol of the messenger. John is the messenger of the great tidings: he pointed out the Messiah and spoke of the coming of His Kingdom. “Filled with honey, and speaking words sweeter and more beneficial than honey.”

“Clothed in a garment of camel’s hair, and showing in himself the type of ascesis, the ascetic discipline; he was sanctified by the Holy Spirit while still in his mother’s womb.” Saint Cyril is singing his praises, and he has a reason for doing so, as you will see shortly. John was sanctified by the Holy Spirit while he was still in his mother’s womb. Jeremiah too was sanctified, for Jeremiah says that the Lord set him apart and sanctified him from his mother’s womb. “But Jeremiah did not prophesy in the womb. John alone, while still being carried in the womb, leaped for joy.”

This is what Elizabeth said when she saw the Theotokos: “The child within my womb leaped for joy.” And because John bore the prophetic spirit from his mother’s womb, he imparted it to his mother Elizabeth. Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and said to her kinswoman, the Theotokos, “How is it that the mother of my Lord should come to me?”—the Lord whom she carried in her womb. Do you see the prophecy? It was not Elizabeth who prophesied; John prophesied—John, while still an unborn child. John spoke through his mother’s mouth. Great indeed, truly great! “Though he did not see the Master with the eyes of the flesh, he knew Him through the spirit.” He did not see the Master with his bodily eyes, but through his spirit, illumined by the Holy Spirit, he was able to recognize Christ. “Because the grace of Baptism is great, its appointed minister was also great.” There is the central point. Because Baptism was so great, God used the greatest person of the Old Testament, John. That is why Saint Cyril gave this whole description. This man, greater than all those born of women, this extraordinary man John, is the one who bears the weight of Baptism. It is marvelous, and it shows that Baptism truly is something immense and great.

“Thus he baptized in the Jordan, and all Jerusalem went out to him, receiving the first fruits of baptism. For the fullness of the dignity of every good thing belongs to Jerusalem. But know, O people of Jerusalem, how those who went out were baptized by him: they confessed their sins. First they showed their wounds.” How did they confess? Everyone went to John to be baptized—all of them. How did they confess, and in what manner? “First they showed their wounds.” What does that mean? They stated their sins. They confessed their sins. Where and how? In the water. Pay attention to this point; afterward I will explain a small interpretive detail. They entered the water and remained there for some time...

...confessing their sins. The Evangelists say that Christ “immediately came up from the water.” Why immediately? Because He had no sins to confess. Do you see the significance of that one little word, “immediately”? What could the Lord confess? He is without sin. “Then he applied the remedies.” After the sinners had exposed their wounds—their sins—John applied the remedies, the medicines. He placed the healing remedies upon them, “and to those who believed, he granted deliverance from eternal fire.”

To those who believed, he granted deliverance from eternal fire, from Hell. Would you like to understand how this happened? I will put it in my own words so that I do not weary you by reading the whole passage. What did John say to the people? To whom did he speak? He spoke to the people, to the tax collectors, and to the prostitutes. He also spoke to the soldiers. The soldiers came and asked him, “And what should we do?” What should you do? Do not wrong anyone, and do not extort anyone. To extort meant a kind of violent intimidation, a shaking down that soldiers used against those who did not pay their taxes...

They obtained these contracts from the Roman authorities through competitive bidding. In other words, the Romans put the collection of taxes up for auction. The contractor, as we might call him, who won the bid paid the Romans the amount they demanded. But he was then able to use soldiers to collect the taxes from the people. So a soldier would go to a difficult taxpayer, and when the citizen said, “I have nothing; I cannot pay,” and so forth, the soldier would threaten him. “Do not intimidate or wrong anyone, and be content with your rations and your wages.” In other words, do not extort the citizens in order to take bribes and get more money.

Do these things, he says, and you will be saved. The Pharisees also came. “What should we do?” they asked. Wicked men—vipers, a brood of vipers! Do you see how he exposed them? John called neither the soldiers nor the tax collectors “a brood of vipers,” poisonous snakes. “Who warned you to flee from the coming day of the Lord’s wrath? Who told you? Have you come merely out of curiosity?” You know, they did not come to be baptized. But Saint Cyril now takes this image and says: “Do you want to cease being a poisonous snake? Do you want to cease being a viper? Do you know what a viper does when it wants to shed its skin? And do you know how it sheds it? Listen. It goes to a narrow passage.”

I have used this example before, but Saint Cyril mentions it here. The viper goes into a narrow passage between two rocks, where the gap is smaller than its body. It puts its head in and tries to squeeze through. As it struggles through, the rocks pull off its old skin, and at last the snake emerges on the other side with new, gleaming skin. I have seen a shining viper just after it came out of its “shirt,” while on the other side lay the shirt, as we call it—the snake’s discarded skin. In the same way, he says, you too must pass through the narrow and afflicted way, through metanoia—repentance—so that you may come to Baptism and be saved. But, my dear friends, we shall speak about this repentance, God willing, next Monday.

είδατε η αντίθεση πάλι. Θα ξαναδιαβάσω για να το διασώσω όσο μου είναι δυνατόν. Ελευθερία τῷ Ισραήλ από του Φαραώ δια της θαλάσσης και ελευθερία αμαρτιών τῷ κόσμῳ δια του λουτρού του ύδατος εν ρήματι Θεού. Ποιο είναι το λουτρόν του ύδατος; Είναι το βάπτισμα. Λέγεται λουτρόν το βάπτισμα, που τώρα σώζει τον κόσμο από τις αμαρτίες με το λόγο του Θεού. Τύπος το ένα, πραγμάτωση το άλλο. Εδώ θα ήθελα να μείνω σε μια πολύ μικρή φρασούλα: εν ρήματι Θεού. Με το Λόγο του Θεού. Ξέρετε τι θα πει αυτό; Θα πει εκείνο που πολλές φορές ο ορθολογισμός μας θα μας πει, αυτό που ανέφερε την περασμένη φορά ο Άγιος Κύριλος και σας το έκανα ανάλυση. Ε, μα τώρα δηλαδή τι είναι το νερό αυτό;

Πρώτον ο αρχιερεύς λούεται, είτα θυμιά. Πρώτον γαρ Ααρών ελούσατο, είτα γέγονεν αρχιερεύς. Πώς γαρ έμελλε χωρίς ύδατος υπέρ άλλων πρεσβεύεσθαι, ο μη ύδατι πρότερον κεκαθαρμένος; Και σύμβολον έκειτο του βαπτίσματος λουτήρ ένδον της σκηνής αποκειμένος. Υπήρχε λουτήρας μες στη σκηνή, αργότερα στο ναό του Σολομώντος απ’ έξω, για να πλυθεί ο αρχιερεύς και οι ιερείς. Και εμείς σήμερα πλενόμαστε. Δεν τελούμε τη Θεία Λειτουργία, εάν προηγουμένως δεν πλυθούμε. Πρώτα λοιπόν, λέγει, ο αρχιερεύς ελούετο, κατόπιν θυμίαζε. Πώς θα ήταν δυνατόν ποτέ να καθαρίσει τους άλλους, εάν ο ίδιος δεν είναι καθαρός;
