Summary

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem’s third catechesis presents Baptism as participation in Christ’s death and burial, followed by the promise of resurrection. Drawing on the Didache, the lecture calls candidates, sponsors, parents, and other participants to prepare for Baptism through fasting, catechesis, faith, and repentance. The parable of the wedding garment teaches that Christ invites everyone, but entry into sacramental communion requires repentance, a changed life, and faithful membership in the Church.

My dear friends, we are now at the third catechesis of Saint Cyril of Jerusalem. Its title is: “A Catechesis for Those Being Illumined, Delivered in Jerusalem, Concerning Baptism, with a Reading from the Epistle to the Romans: ‘Do you not know that all of us who were baptized into Christ were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through Baptism into death,’” and so forth. That is the title: it is addressed to those being illumined, those who were preparing to be baptized; it was delivered in Jerusalem; and its subject is Baptism.

It is based on the words of Saint Paul the Apostle in his Epistle to the Romans: all of you who have been baptized in the name of Christ have been baptized into His death. The first three paragraphs of the catechesis are, so to speak, Saint Cyril’s words of welcome. Yet they are also words of praise addressed to those being illumined, so that they may prepare for their Baptism and be instructed in the Mystery of Baptism. This introduction, comprising the first three paragraphs, is beautiful. I shall go through it rather quickly, as you will see,

so that we may come immediately afterward to the main subject. But I would like to tell you that today, after having been baptized, it is essential for us to learn what Baptism means. Infant Baptism, if you will, rests on this condition: that in due course the baptized person must receive catechesis. The usual order is reversed.

Catechesis should come first and Baptism afterward. But for many other reasons infant Baptism eventually became established, on the condition that, upon reaching maturity, the baptized person would be instructed in the content of the faith and in the value of the Mystery of Baptism. Unfortunately, my dear friends, this does not happen. Indeed, the godparent is the one who ought to undertake this work. Today, however, godparents are chosen because they are wealthy, attractive, or for any number of other reasons—by every criterion except whether they are the right person to teach our child the faith.

I have told you before: when you are asked to become a godparent, be very careful. It is a sorry state of affairs—truly a sorry state—when we regard the Mystery of Baptism merely as a social obligation or social event. It means that we have forgotten what the Mystery of Baptism truly is.

We have belittled it and reduced its value to that of a social obligation.

That is why, if a child is ill, we would rather risk letting the child die, or allow many months and a great deal of time to pass without the child receiving Holy Communion, simply so that the godparent can come, or so that we can find the particular godparent we want and then hold a lavish banquet, with entertainment and worldly display. It is, admittedly, a sorry state of affairs. And when we tell people, “Have your child baptized, so that the child may become a Christian, be sanctified, attend church, and receive Holy Communion,” their minds are so firmly fixed on this worldly display that they will never listen to you. Therefore, I ask that when you know you will be able, later on,

to teach your godchild a few things and give the child catechesis—whether a boy or a girl—then undertake the child’s Baptism. But when you know that the family will never allow you to have any spiritual influence on your godchild, do not undertake it. There was once a belief that a person performed a charitable deed by sponsoring a Baptism. In former times, spiritual fathers would give a woman who had undergone an abortion a canon, a rule of prayer, requiring her to sponsor the Baptism of one, two, or three children as a means of atonement. This advice and this understanding are mistaken, because serving as a godparent at someone’s Baptism and regarding this as almsgiving has nothing to do with the Mystery itself. I will tell you where the idea came from. Baptizing a child used to cost a great deal of money. A very poor person might have no means to baptize his child, and the child would remain unbaptized. In that sense, paying for a poor person’s child to be baptized was regarded as almsgiving. But do you need money to baptize a child? The very idea is inconceivable. Must you put on a worldly display in order to have a Baptism? Take your child and the godparent, go to the Church, and the priest will baptize the child in the font. That is all. Is Baptism, then, a question of whether we have money? You see that, from this perspective as well,

we have fallen into a sorry state. And what a state it is—a terrible one! Amid all this decline, we have naturally forgotten the full beauty and meaning of the Mystery of Baptism: that in it our personal sins and ancestral sin are forgiven, and, above all, we receive divine adoption. The Mystery of Baptism is the Mystery of adoption: God adopts us and acknowledges us as His children. And you know that if God is my Father, then I too am a god, because I cannot help but resemble my Father. Therefore, if God is my Father, then I am a god—or, more precisely,

a god by grace. This is not blasphemy. Some people hear that in Baptism I become a god. I become a god by grace. “I said, you are gods,” God says in the Old Testament. And there in the baptismal font, apart from all the other things we shall consider,

including the symbol of Christ’s burial and the Resurrection—there are many things, and we shall examine them as we continue—the most important is this: I become a child of God and a god by grace. I receive divine adoption. This has now been forgotten and lost from memory. What must we do to remember it again? We must begin once more to read the catecheses of Saint Cyril.

Thank you. Concerning the Mystery of Baptism, the Holy Fathers—including John Chrysostom and Saint Basil the Great, if I am not mistaken, as well as many others—have written one, two, three, or even more homilies. I believe that if we return to the Fathers of our Church, we shall be able to learn what it means to be baptized. Let no one say, then, “I have already been baptized, so I no longer need to learn what it means or what I possess.” Imagine, my dear friend, that a will left by one of your ancestors lies in a notary’s safe and makes you immensely wealthy, yet it remains locked there while you live in poverty without even enough to eat. Would that not be terrible? The same thing happens here.

This is the covenant that was made—the word is not mine; as you will see, Saint Cyril uses it—between God and you. It made you His child; He adopts you, and you become an heir to His Kingdom, yet you die poor. See how Holy Scripture expresses it: “I said, you are gods, yet you die like men.” What does “you die like men” mean? You die as ordinary people. I told you that you are gods, yet you die as ordinary people, and nothing more. Is that not tragic? We must therefore truly learn. And so I beg you and appeal for your attention: let us take careful heed of everything Saint Cyril tells us here, so that we may become conscious of the value of the Baptism we have all received.

As I said, the introduction is somewhat laudatory, but that does not matter. It contains several very beautiful passages: “Let the heavens rejoice and the earth be glad for those who are about to be sprinkled with hyssop and cleansed—with spiritual hyssop, by the power of Him who, during His Passion, was given drink with hyssop and a reed.” Let the heavens rejoice and the earth be glad for those who are about to be sprinkled with hyssop. Hyssop was a very low-growing plant, a shrub used for sprinkling in connection with sacrifices. The priest, the high priest, would take the hyssop and dip it into

the vessel containing the blood of the sacrifice. With it he would sprinkle the people, the sacred vessels, the temple, the Holy of Holies, and so forth. For us, basil is used in much the same way. And you who are preparing for Baptism are about to be cleansed, but not with the hyssop of old.

“Sprinkle me”—as the psalm you learned in childhood says—“with hyssop, and I shall be cleansed.” Do you remember? Not, then, with the hyssop of old, but with spiritual hyssop. What is this spiritual hyssop? Look at the phrase: “By the power of Him who, during His Passion, was given drink with hyssop and a reed.” It is by the power of that One—of Christ.

During His Passion, He was given drink by means of hyssop and a reed. In other words, this sprinkling and cleansing will not now come through the simple sprinkling of hyssop, but through the sacrifice of Christ. Indeed, all the Mysteries flow from the Cross of Christ. And the first Mystery, which is the gateway to the Kingdom of God, is Baptism. John the Evangelist tells us very clearly that when the Lord’s side was pierced by the spear, water and blood flowed from it.

“He who saw it has borne witness, and he knows that his testimony is true.” The one who saw it bears witness and declares that his testimony is true: he truly saw water and blood. With all this insistence—“he who saw it has borne witness, and his testimony is true”—John the Evangelist does not intend us to remain at the level of a natural phenomenon. And, if you will permit me, a brief aside: the natural phenomenon is well known. Christ died upon the Cross, and it is known that when a human or animal organism dies, the blood immediately coagulates and no longer flows. Blood gushes forth from a wound only in a living organism. It is also known that in a dead body the serum separates from the blood, producing what we call water.

The serum separates from the blood. Here, then, we have two things, each establishing a different truth. The separation into water and blood reveals that Christ had died, while the fact that the wound gushed forth shows, as it were, that Christ “had not died.” In other words, Christ truly—most truly—died upon the Cross, yet what occurred was a miracle. I place the words “had not died” in quotation marks. Christ, precisely while dead upon the Cross, becomes the source of our life. Though, in this sense, He had not died, He did die. Biologically, Christ died upon the Cross; yet Christ’s very death upon the Cross became the source of our life, because

John the Evangelist now wishes to tell us that, although Christ died and this wondrous phenomenon occurred—the flowing forth of blood and water—its meaning is no longer merely biological but mystical. These two things signify nothing other than Baptism and the Holy Eucharist. These are the two Mysteries: the first is the gateway, and the other is the end and purpose. These two Mysteries are necessary for salvation. The other Mysteries are not all necessary in every case, depending on the circumstances. Pay attention: depending on the circumstances. Do not be surprised by what we are saying. What do I mean when I say they are “not necessary”? Let us suppose...

Chrismation is necessary; there is no question about that. Holy Matrimony is not necessary for everyone. Holy Unction is not necessary, because I may never fall ill, though I may receive it. Holy Confession is not necessary if I do not sin. If I am baptized and die immediately afterward, without having had any opportunity to sin, I have no need of Confession. This is why Confession is called a second Baptism. Chrismation is of great importance, but it is included within these two Mysteries. Therefore, although our Church distinguishes the Mystery of Chrismation from the Mystery of Baptism, she celebrates them together. At the very moment she baptizes a person, she also chrismates him. ‘Let the heavenly powers, therefore, rejoice.’

That is, let the angels, who are the heavenly powers, rejoice. ‘And let the souls that are about to be joined to the spiritual Bridegroom prepare themselves.’ Let the souls that are about to be baptized and united to the spiritual Bridegroom—to Christ, the Bridegroom—prepare themselves. ‘For there is a voice crying in the wilderness.’

Long ago, John cried out in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way of the Lord.’ ‘This is no small matter. It is not the ordinary, indiscriminate union of bodies, but a choice made according to faith by the Spirit, who searches all things.’ Preparing oneself for Baptism is no small matter.

Allow me to dwell on this preparation. In accordance with the words, ‘Prepare the way of the Lord,’ anyone who is to be baptized must prepare. The Didache, incidentally, is an extremely ancient book, dating from the end of the first century or the beginning of the second. Some even date it to the year 55 after Christ, though it probably does not belong to so early a date. In any case, it is a most ancient book. It is very short—the entire work fills only two or three sheets. It was discovered in the last century, and its appearance was regarded as the greatest discovery of its kind in that entire century, since it was such an ancient work of ecclesiastical literature. It says that when someone is going to be baptized, both the person who is to be baptized...

...and those who will be present at the Baptism, as many as are able, should fast. Since the infant we are baptizing cannot fast, the parents, the godparent, and anyone else who is able should fast. You cannot imagine how glad this makes me. Of course, I am not saying this for the first time; I have said it more than once. You cannot imagine how glad I am when people occasionally come and tell me that they heard this teaching once and have kept it. Just recently someone was speaking to me about this very matter. They fast when they are going to baptize a child or attend a Baptism. That is a great thing. Then, my beloved, we can say that we are truly making Baptism fruitful, when we prepare ourselves beforehand.

For an adult—and, we might say, afterward for an infant as well—this preparation is catechesis. We must be instructed in the faith; we must learn certain things. Then our Baptism can truly bear fruit, so that we do not stain it or defile the white robe, the spiritual white robe of our Baptism.

He says: You are about to be joined to the spiritual Bridegroom; that is, to be united with Jesus Christ. We do not have ‘the ordinary, indiscriminate union of bodies.’ Here, ‘union’ means bodily joining, a sexual union. But this union is of the Spirit. We are speaking not of a marriage of the flesh, but of a spiritual marriage: ‘a choice made according to faith by the Spirit who searches all things.’ The choice is made according to faith. Now listen to what he says next: ‘For in worldly marriages and agreements, choices are not always made with sound judgment; but wherever there is wealth or beauty, there the bridegroom quickly gives his consent.’

Here, however, ‘it is not bodily beauty that matters, but a soul with a blameless conscience; here it is not condemned mammon, but the soul’s wealth in reverence.’ In the world, when marriages and arrangements are negotiated, people discuss what dowry will be given, what each person will do, and what each will provide. Such things ‘are not always done with sound judgment.’ Wherever wealth or beauty is mentioned, the bridegroom quickly runs there. Did you hear that? Wherever there is talk of wealth and beauty, the bridegroom quickly runs there. But here things are not like that. Here what matters is not bodily beauty, but the soul’s...

...blameless conscience—a conscience free from accusation. That is what matters here, where Christ comes to unite Himself with each soul in this spiritual marriage. Nor does condemned and blameworthy mammon—material wealth—matter, but rather the soul’s wealth in reverence. As you can see, all these words are beautiful. Though their tone is laudatory and somewhat rhetorical, they contain profound truths. That is why I told you earlier that the Mystery of Baptism must not be surrounded by the burden of worldly display.

We insult the Mystery; the Mystery is lost and evaporates. I would not tell you that when we celebrate a Baptism or Holy Matrimony we should not rejoice. Pay attention to this point. The Lord Himself said this regarding Holy Matrimony.

The malicious Pharisees asked Him, ‘Why do Your disciples not fast?’ And the Lord answered them, ‘As long as the Bridegroom is with them, how can they fast? When the Bridegroom is taken away—that is, I, Jesus Christ—then they will fast.’ While the Bridegroom is with them, they do not fast. This means that when we have the Bridegroom, Christ, we do not fast. People do not fast at a wedding. This is why weddings must not be celebrated—and our Church does not permit them to be celebrated—on fasting days. There are other reasons as well, but I will not discuss them now, lest we stray from our subject. The same applies to Baptism. We will rejoice, my beloved. If you wish, we will eat and set a table; we will not fast. But this material enjoyment must not become the center of attention. It should simply form the setting, the circle surrounding the Mystery of Baptism. If matters are kept in this proper order, who, my brother, will accuse you of setting a table for your child’s Baptism? But take care: a meal, not dancing, revelry, entertainment, and debauchery, for then you will insult the Mystery of Baptism that your child has received.

Only this: a meal and nothing more—simply a meal. Do I sound severe? These are not my words. As you see, the word of God says these things. The second paragraph begins: ‘Believe, therefore, O children of righteousness, John who exhorts you and says: Make straight the way of the Lord.’ Believe John the Baptist, who exhorts you and says, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord. Remove every crooked obstacle and every stumbling block, so that you may walk straight toward eternal life.’ Put aside all obstacles and stumbling blocks. The primary meaning of the word ‘stumbling block’ is a stake driven into the ground.

Its literal meaning is something that protrudes, something I trip over and fall upon. That is what ‘stumbling block’ means in the strict sense. Therefore, remove the obstacles and stakes from your path, ‘so that you may walk straight toward eternal life.’ Do you like that expression, ‘walk straight’? I like it very much. It is a beautiful expression. To walk straight means that I do not take crooked, broken, winding roads that turn aside. Indeed, if you will, it is simply another way of expressing exactly what John the Baptist said, as the Prophet Isaiah also records.

‘Make straight the way of the Lord.’ Make God’s road straight. How is this road of God to be made straight? Are we to build a straight road for God to travel upon? My beloved, God’s road lies within our heart. It is there that we must make the way of God straight. We must set our heart right and receive Christ with simplicity. We must remove every obstacle so that we may walk straight toward eternal life. ‘Prepare the vessels of the soul, cleansing them through sincere faith, to receive the Holy Spirit.’ Here he gives us another image: the image of a vessel, a container being prepared to receive the Holy Spirit. Begin washing your garments.

This is the Mystery of metanoia, of repentance: ‘so that, having been called into the bridal chamber, you may be found clean and be received.’ ‘For the Bridegroom freely calls everyone, because grace is abundant, and the mighty voice of the heralds gathers everyone together.’ Christ the Bridegroom calls everyone, because His grace is rich and abundant. He has appointed heralds with mighty voices to cry aloud and gather everyone. ‘But He Himself then examines those who have entered the typological wedding’—that is, the sacramental image of the heavenly marriage. This refers to what is said further on.

Let me read it to you: ‘God forbid that any of those whose names have been enrolled should hear, “Friend, how did you come in here without a wedding garment?”’ This is the parable of the wedding feast.

It is the parable of the wedding feast of the King’s Son. Many were invited to the wedding, and one man appeared wearing a garment unsuitable for the occasion—what we would call improper wedding attire. When everyone had taken their places at the tables, the king went about examining how each guest was dressed. He saw one man and said to him, ‘Friend, how did you come in here without a wedding garment?’ The man might have replied, ‘Lord, you say I should have a wedding garment, but did You tell me where I could find the money to buy one?’

Evidently, the wedding garment was given to each guest at the entrance to the house or palace. Why, then, did you enter without accepting it? This garment is the garment of metanoia, of repentance, my beloved, and God Himself gives it. God Himself also gives us the Mystery of Holy Confession. Yet you come to the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist—or, in this case, to the Mystery of Baptism—without repentance? How can this be? If you are unwilling to change your life, how can you be baptized without a wedding garment? Your life must change; you must repent. This is absolutely necessary. That is why he says that Christ, being rich in grace, calls everyone.

From that point onward, the matter rests with you: will you take care to be prepared? Saint Cyril then prays, ‘God forbid’ that anyone among those enrolled in the Church’s records—that is, those whose names have been written in the Church’s registers—should be found unprepared. I told you this last year, and I will say it once again: the Church has registers. Yes, yes, indeed, the Church has registers. Not, of course, so that we may obtain a certificate of poverty, a travel document, or anything else of that kind...

...but registers, so that the Church may know who her faithful members are. Once...

At one time the Bishop of Florina had proposed something like this, and he was fiercely criticized. And I said, “Why are they criticizing the man? This is what the ancient Church did.” The ancient Church was closed. By “closed,” we mean that She had members whom She recognized. Tell me, my brother—forgive me for speaking this way—is there any association or organization that has members but does not recognize them? Every organization keeps a written record of its members. Must the Church alone be like an unfenced vineyard? I would say that the Church must return to this. This is why things have deteriorated, so to speak, in the Church—in Her administration and among Her Christians. We are in a sorry state. Why?

Because the enrollment of names is missing. I am not the one saying this; Saint Cyril says it. He tells us what must be done. This is what must be done: registers must be established again, and the door of the Church must be closed. Do you remember what I told you last year about the words, “The doors! The doors!” which we say in the Divine Liturgy? They should no longer be—or rather, should no longer have been reduced to—a mere symbol, but should become a reality. In those days, the doorkeepers of the church building would close the doors. When the deacon called out from the altar, “The doors!” that was their signal. You see, they had no intercom, so the instruction had to be given aloud. The doorkeepers were to close the doors after all the catechumens had departed, leaving only the faithful inside.

Let us pray that things may become so again. Only in this way will the Church of Christ see days of glory once more. As we are now, I see no progress; honestly, I see no progress. And not only that—we see the opposite. Whenever a priest raises his voice in a particular situation because he wants to correct something, he is accused by the multitude—by people who should not even belong to the Church—of driving people away from the Church. Such a driving away can be holy. At times, those who are unwilling to live a spiritual life worthy of the Church should leave, and those who are prepared to live a life worthy of the Church should remain. You may say, “But, but...”

Is anyone being treated unjustly? Do not be afraid. Do you want to enter the Church? No one is stopping you. Correct your life and come into the Church. You are not being treated unjustly. But Christ calls the whole world! Yes, Christ calls the whole world, but notice what Saint Cyril invokes. My dear friends, what did I tell you? He invokes the parable of the wedding feast of the King’s Son: “Friend, how did you come in here without a wedding garment?” Christ, then, treats no one unjustly. Would Christ’s ministers, the priests, treat anyone unjustly? Correct yourself and come. What do you think is the one remaining form of exclusion, the last remnant of an obstacle? It is when the spiritual father says to the person confessing, “Listen, you will not receive Holy Communion.” What does this mean? It means that you will not sit at the banquet of the Kingdom.

You will not sit at the wedding feast of the King’s Son. In other words, you do not have the proper garment. Today, of course, we no longer close the doors; that practice has faded. But we still have one last weapon: at least those who come to Holy Confession have some awareness, and we prevent them from receiving Holy Communion when necessary. As for those who go and receive Holy Communion without confessing, allow me to say that they fall into the hands of God Himself. “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.”

“Until now you have been standing outside the door; but may it be granted to all of you to say, ‘The King has brought me into His chamber.’” There it is. Until now, he says, you were outside the door. Is it therefore wrong for us also to be outside the door? No, it is not wrong. Now you have entered, but you entered only after first standing outside the door. “My soul shall rejoice in the Lord.” When you enter, you will then say, “Let my soul rejoice in the Lord.” It is from the Psalms.

“For He has clothed me with the garment of salvation and the robe of gladness; as a bridegroom He has placed a crown upon me.” He placed a crown upon me like a bridegroom. You know, the mitra—the word spelled with an iota—is the crown. Years ago, in a church near Larissa, I think, here in Greece—perhaps at Pournari, though I do not remember exactly—I saw one.

Those were the kinds of crowns people wore when they were married in earlier times. I do not know whether the very elderly among you remember them. I myself did not live in those days. I remember the wedding crowns decorated with little flowers. But in earlier times they wore a mitra. These mitras were made of iron. Perhaps they decorated them with flowers; I do not know. They wore a mitra, a crown, like the crown worn by a king or by a Metropolitan. Such crowns were placed on the newlyweds, and they were crowned. After all, that is what crowning means: to place a crown upon someone. “The servant of God is crowned.” That is what “is crowned” means: a crown is placed upon his head. This custom is exceedingly ancient. As I told you, it is mentioned in the Psalms—excuse me, I mean Isaiah 61:10.

It says, “Like a bridegroom He placed a crown upon me, and like a bride He adorned me with ornaments.” So brides were adorned even in ancient times, and they are adorned today as well. This is not wrong, not wrong at all, but, as I told you, it must always remain within the bounds of modesty, so that the soul of every one of you may be found... One moment, you may say: Are we speaking here about our wedding—that is, about Baptism? But this is precisely where Baptism leads: to the marriage, to our union with Christ, Christ the Bridegroom. It means, in a manner of speaking, that I am wedded to Christ. “I am not speaking of the time before receiving grace.”

“So that the soul of none of you may be found with spot or wrinkle or anything of that kind. I am not speaking of the time before receiving grace, but so that, when grace is given, your conscience may be found blameless and may cooperate with grace.” He is not saying that you must attain the forgiveness of your sins before receiving the grace of God. No. But once you receive the grace of God, take care from then on to keep a blameless conscience. Here, my dear friends, the first three paragraphs come to an end. They formed the introduction to Saint Cyril’s third catechesis on Baptism. Now he gradually enters the main subject: “The matter is truly great, brethren; approach it with attention.” It is a great matter. Take heed. You must approach Baptism with the utmost care.

“Each of you is about to stand before God in the presence of countless hosts of angels.” Each person is about to stand before God, before countless hosts of angels. Yes, because a new being is entering the Church of God and of the angels. You know that the first Church is the Church of the Holy Trinity. The Church is without beginning and co-eternal with God. The Church is without beginning, co-eternal, and uncreated. The Church is the Church of the three Persons of the Holy Trinity. Then God creates the angels and makes them His Church. That is, God includes them in His own existence—or, better said, in His blessedness... Thank you.

He includes the angels and makes them a Church, that is, a communion. Then He includes the first-created human beings and, through them, the whole creation. The first-created humans go astray, and Jesus Christ comes to set things right. Then the Church is established definitively upon the earth. So this is a great matter, truly a great matter, and the angels are present. “The Holy Spirit is about to seal your souls. You are about to be enlisted in the service of the great King.” You are about to be enlisted under the great King, to become soldiers. “Therefore, make yourselves ready; prepare yourselves—not by putting on splendid garments, but with the reverence of a soul possessing a good conscience.” Now pay attention.

“Do not regard the baptismal washing as mere water, but look to the spiritual grace given together with the water.”

He called Baptism “the washing,” and indeed “the washing of regeneration”: a washing through which a person can be made new again, can be born anew. Regeneration means being born again. Addressing the catechumens, he says, “Take heed. Do not look upon the washing, the water of Baptism, as mere water”—mere in the sense of plain, nothing but ordinary water. Someone might say, “What is Baptism? It is that thing people called—you know—mere foolery.” Here, now, is the precise answer.

Do you know why that expression was used? Because the people—or rather, the woman who said it—saw only plain water. Nothing more. I would say that Saint Cyril has anticipated this objection. He has anticipated us. Do not look at the water as though it were merely ordinary water. Take heed that this water has been united with the grace of God, with the spiritual grace of God. This is what you must understand. Indeed, my dear friends, the water has been so closely united with the spiritual grace of God that, after Baptism, we do not pour the baptismal water just anywhere. It is not because... You will correct me, but let me say it first. It is not because we anointed the catechumen with Chrismation.

You will correct me: Chrismation takes place after Baptism and has no contact with the water. Why, then? Ah, this water is exceedingly sacred. We pour it into a special drain, one located inside or just outside the altar, and nowhere else. We cannot pour anything else there indiscriminately. Suppose something has been washed because some of the Holy Communion fell on a covering, or there was something we did not burn—whatever sacred item may have been washed. We pour all such water there. When we priests receive Holy Communion and wash, the water we use for washing—outwardly, of course, not for rinsing our mouths, but for washing the hands with which we handled the Lamb—is disposed of there. Whatever the particular case may be, what does this signify?

This water has truly been sanctified. Do you know what has taken place for this water to be sanctified? It would truly be worthwhile to analyze the entire service of Baptism, so that you could understand all these things clearly, but we do not have the time now. An exorcism of the water is performed. Note that Saint Cyril returns to the Mystery of Baptism in the second or perhaps the third Mystagogical Catechesis—most likely the second. But, my dear friends, it will take us a very long time to reach that point, perhaps another two or three years. By then you will have forgotten all these things. He explains it there. So, exorcisms are performed. Exorcisms mean...

The priest drives out the demons lurking in the water. Thank you. Demons lurk throughout the whole creation, throughout the created world. Before this water can be used for the regeneration of the human person, the demons must be driven from it. For this reason, these three prayers—these three exorcisms—are offered, so that those lurking there may depart. The word “lurk” appears in these very prayers: the devil lurking there must be driven out. He must leave. Afterward, this water receives the grace of the Holy Spirit in a particular way, and consequently it is no longer common water. Do you remember long ago—the older among you will remember—when Baptisms were sometimes celebrated in people’s homes?

The baptismal font would be taken from the church to the home. After the Baptism was celebrated there, the water passed through a small valve into a tank at the bottom of the font. They then brought the font and the water back to the church and poured the water into the special drain, known as the sacrarium. They did not throw the water away at the house where the Baptism had taken place. They carried that water through the streets and brought it back to the Church because it had received the sanctification of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, we cannot regard this water as ordinary water; it has been united with the grace of God.

For he gives an example.

“For just as the things offered upon the altars of idols, though plain and pure by nature, become defiled through the invocation of the idols, so, conversely, plain water, when it receives the invocation of the Holy Spirit, Christ, and the Father, acquires the power of holiness.”

As he says, food, produce, and fruit are not defiled in themselves. But when they are offered upon an altar to idols, to false gods, they become defiled. Those fruits are then defiled. Conversely, when over this water of Baptism—the water of Baptism—we invoke...

the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, it then acquires the power of holiness. Let me repeat the phrase: “It acquires the power of holiness.” So do not look upon it as mere water, since this water will bring about your rebirth. We might say—and he will say this a little later, but I will mention it now—that Christ said, “No one enters the Kingdom of God except through water and the Spirit.” This means that I cannot enter the Kingdom of God unless I am baptized. What, then, does this water possess? What does it possess? Since we invoke the name of the Holy Trinitarian God over it, only God can know what it contains, what power this water possesses, and what power it has to bring me into the Kingdom of God.

You may say to me, “I do not understand it.” Of course we do not understand it, my dear friends, because it is a Mystery. But what do we do? We believe it. Why do we believe it? Because Christ Himself told us. That settles it. “Because man is twofold, composed of soul and body, the cleansing is also twofold: the incorporeal is cleansed by the incorporeal, and the bodily by the body.” That is, what belongs to the incorporeal is cleansed by what is incorporeal, and what belongs to the bodily by what is bodily. In other words, “the water cleanses the body, while the Spirit seals the soul.” That is the meaning. The Holy Spirit cleanses the soul, and the water cleanses the body. Yet this is not ordinary water.

Ordinary water would be the water in which we bathe to cleanse our bodies. But this is something far beyond that.

“When you are about to descend into the water, do not attend merely to the plain water.” Notice that beautiful word, “descend”: when you are about to descend into this water. See how every word has been placed here. The ancient baptisteries were set into the ground. They were not baptismal fonts, and indeed they were shaped like the Cross. If you have ever visited ancient churches, you may have seen the remains of baptisteries shaped like the Cross. They were perhaps a meter deep in the ground. They were filled with water, like a pool in the shape of the Cross. Those being baptized descended by steps and were baptized there. So you see the meaning of the phrase, “When you are about to descend into the water.” That is what he means. “Do not attend merely to the plain water”; do not see it as ordinary water.

“But expect salvation through the divine uncreated energy of the Holy Spirit. For without both, it is impossible for you to be brought to perfection.” Without these two, it is impossible for you to be perfected in salvation. “It is not I who say this, but the Lord Jesus Christ, who has authority over this matter. He Himself says, ‘Unless one is born from above,’ and then adds, ‘of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the Kingdom of God.’” Unless someone is reborn through water and the Holy Spirit, he cannot enter the Kingdom of God. Neither is the person who was baptized but was not counted worthy of the Holy Spirit brought to perfection, nor the person who was counted worthy of the Holy Spirit but was not baptized. You may ask me, “Is that possible?”

Saint Cyril says, “The statement is bold, but it is not mine.” Is it possible for someone to receive the Holy Spirit without being baptized? For he said just before that even someone who received the Holy Spirit but was not baptized is not brought to perfection. Is it possible? “Well, I am not the one saying it,” Saint Cyril tells us. “Listen to the Book of Acts.” The Apostle Peter was summoned to the house of Cornelius, after Cornelius had seen the vision instructing him to send for Peter. This man possessed great holiness. Saint Cyril says here that he had raised up a pillar of communion with heaven, for he was counted worthy of an angelic visitation, when the angel told him...

“Your alms and your prayers have been heard and have risen before God.” He had received great grace. And when the Apostle Peter arrived and began speaking to them, my dear friends, all who were seated in the house—Cornelius had invited his relatives and friends—listen to what happened: the Holy Spirit fell upon them, just as on the day of Pentecost. They began to speak in foreign tongues, and so forth. It was a true Pentecost. Let me make a brief aside here. We have two accounts of Pentecost: one for the Jews and the other for the Gentiles. This is why the Evangelist Luke describes this event for us at such length: to show that Pentecost was not only for the Jews, but also for the Gentiles, the idolaters. And so, my dear friends...

When the Apostle Peter saw the Holy Spirit descend upon everyone in that house, what was he to do? Was he to say, “My mission is finished, and I am leaving”? He did not do that. What did he say instead? Listen to what is written here: Scripture says that Peter commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Thus they first received the Holy Spirit and were baptized afterward. They still had to be baptized. Yes, they had to be baptized, because Christ said, “through water and the Spirit,” so that, once the soul had been reborn through faith, the body also might partake of grace through the water. Therefore, my dear friends, both were absolutely necessary. It is indeed a great thing.

Baptism is an immense thing. As I have told you, without it we do not enter the Kingdom. Saint Cyril then explains why God uses water here. He gives many reasons, which we shall discuss next time, for why God uses water. Did you know that water has an entire theology of its own? An entire theology—yes, an entire theology. But I do not know whether we will be able to explain fully why that is so. We said something about it earlier in response to your questions. For now, I will say only this: the significance of water is very great, and Saint Cyril will set it forth for us in detail next Monday.

ο Άγιος Φλωρίνης είχε προτείνει κάτι τέτοιο και τον είχανε κατηγορήσει σφόδρα. Και είπα εγώ: «Και τι τον κατηγορούν τον άνθρωπο; Η αρχαία Εκκλησία αυτό έκανε». Ήτο κλειστή η αρχαία Εκκλησία. Όταν λέμε κλειστή, σημαίνει είχε τα μέλη της που τα ανεγνώριζε. Πέστε μου, ρε αδελφέ, με συγχωρείτε που μιλάω έτσι, υπάρχει κανένας σύλλογος, κανένας οργανισμός που έχει μέλη και δεν τα αναγνωρίζει; Ό,τι μέλη έχει, τα έχει γραμμένα. Μόνη η Εκκλησία, δηλαδή, πρέπει να είναι ξέφραγο αμπέλι; Θα πω ότι η Εκκλησία πρέπει να ξαναγυρίσει σε αυτό. Γι’ αυτό εχάλασε, θα λέγαμε, ας το πούμε έτσι, η Εκκλησία χάλασε, η διοίκησή της, οι χριστιανοί της. Είμαστε μη χειρότερα. Γιατί;

Θα με διορθώσετε: το χρίσμα γίνεται μετά το βάπτισμα, αλλά δεν έχει καμία επαφή με το νερό. Τότε γιατί; Α, το νερό αυτό είναι πολύ σπουδαίο. Το ρίπτομε σε ειδική καταβόθρα, σε ειδική, που αυτή η καταβόθρα είναι μέσα στο ιερό ή έξω από το ιερό, πουθενά αλλού. Εκεί δεν μπορούμε να ρίξουμε οτιδήποτε άλλο. Πλύναμε κάτι, φερ' ειπείν, από τη Θεία Κοινωνία έπεσε απάνω σε ένα κάλυμμα, δεν το κάψαμε, ξέρω εγώ τι πλύναμε. Εκεί θα το ρίξουμε, θα τα ρίξουμε όλα αυτά. Όταν κοινωνούμε εμείς οι ιερείς και πλενόμαστε, το νερό που πλενόμαστε, εννοείται εξωτερικά, όχι εσωτερικά το στόμα μας, τα χέρια μας που πιάσαμε τον αμνό, εκεί θα πάμε να πλυθούμε. Οποιαδήποτε είναι η περίπτωση, τι σημαίνει αυτό;
