Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem teaches that God lovingly forgives every sinner who sincerely approaches Him with repentance and confession. God may forgive sin while permitting illness, temptation, or other consequences to remain as discipline, a safeguard against pride, and an aid to salvation. Christians must never sin deliberately while presuming upon future forgiveness, but should resist temptation and rise again through heartfelt repentance whenever weakness causes them to fall.

My beloved, as we return to the Second Catechetical Lecture of Saint Cyril of Jerusalem, you may remember that, before the summer break, we had reached one of its central teachings: repentance and confession. Saint Cyril goes to great lengths to convince his catechumens that God forgives, that God is love, and that no matter what you have done, you must not hesitate to approach the Lord and ask for His mercy; and He will forgive you.
Needless to say, this is a fundamental teaching if we are to attain salvation. For when the Lord began His preaching, He joined it to the preaching of John the Baptist. It was exactly the same. The heart of the Forerunner’s preaching, and of the Lord’s preaching at the beginning, was this: “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.” Therefore, to enter the approaching Kingdom of God, we must repent. For this reason, Saint Cyril does not hesitate to offer a great many examples.
I think he gives more examples here than in any other of his catechetical lectures, in order to demonstrate the value of repentance. Of course, before the break we mentioned several such examples, but there are more to come. I shall speak of them rather briefly, in the hope that today we can finish both these examples and the Second Catechetical Lecture, and then proceed to the Third. He speaks of David: “Or would you like me to present another example for our sake? Come, then, to blessed David, and take him as an example of repentance.” Take David, then, as an example of repentance.
David, Saint Cyril says, once “suffered something human.” Truly, when we see someone who has committed a sin—even a grave sin, if you will—do you know how both his spiritual father and other people should regard it, if the sin has come to their knowledge? As something human. He suffered something human: something that could happen to me tomorrow. Him today, me tomorrow, because I too am human. We should not, therefore, see it as anything more than what it is. It was human. What, then, happened to David? One day he slept at midday.
When he awoke toward evening—as we commonly take a midday rest in summer—he wanted some fresh air and went up onto the roof of his palace. There he saw a woman, his neighbor Bathsheba, bathing. He did not turn his eyes away in time, and he fell into a very great temptation. In the end, David made her his lover, though Bathsheba was married. Thus David fell into adultery.
It was adultery both in relation to Bathsheba, who was married, and in relation to David, who was also married. It was a grave sin. Indeed, a child was born from their affair, but the child died and did not live, for it was the fruit of sin. And while we are on the subject, I would say to you what I sincerely tell people privately when similar cases come before me: fear adultery; fear this adultery that we have decriminalized. How dreadful it is! The Wisdom of Solomon—or perhaps Proverbs, I do not remember—says in its second chapter: “The children of adulterers… do not reach maturity.” That means they do not prosper, if illness and death do not overtake them first. So, when a man or woman, a father or mother, is careless and falls into adultery, I sometimes say, “Have you no pity for your children, who may suffer great harm?” I beg you, then, I earnestly beg you: be very careful concerning adultery. But when David had committed his sin, my beloved, Nathan the Prophet appeared.
He entered the palace and said to him, “You committed this deed. You did this.” Of course, who had seen it? Only David; only he knew about it. But God also knew, and He revealed it to His prophet. So the prophet now appeared as an accuser on God’s behalf. When the prophet reproved David—and I really ought to read you the text, for Saint Cyril describes it beautifully—he says: “Did someone of higher rank than David come to him? No. An ordinary private citizen came.” And whom did he come to reprove?
David the king, clothed in royal purple. Yet the purple-clad king “was not indignant, for he paid attention not to the man who spoke, but to the One who had sent him.” He did not look to the one speaking to him, but to the One who had sent that man to speak: God. I shall not read you the text, beautiful though it is, so that I may have time to tell you a few more of the essential points. When David heard the prophet’s rebuke, he did not rush to justify himself and say, “What business is it of yours? I have the right to do as I please! Get out of here! Who are you—an ordinary man—to come and reprove me?” or anything of that sort. Do you know what David said? “I have sinned against the Lord.”
What a beautiful and powerful statement: “I have sinned against the Lord.” Saint Cyril says here: “Do you see the king’s humility? Do you see his confession?” The prophet had threatened him with terrible sufferings because of this sin. Yet the moment David uttered the words, “I have sinned against the Lord,” the prophet answered him at once. “For Nathan, the prophet who had threatened him, immediately said: ‘And the Lord has put away your sin.’” The Lord had forgiven his sin. We might join that word “and” directly to David’s statement.
“I have sinned against the Lord”—and the Lord has forgiven. These are two acts: the act of man and the act of God. Before man has even finished saying, “I have sinned against God,” God hastens at once to forgive. Why? Is forgiveness truly so swift? Yes, because the repentance was swift. Was it repentance alone? Repentance alone? David might have repented without admitting it openly before Nathan, this simple man. There was also confession. Not repentance alone, but confession as well, because when I confess, repentance is presupposed. When David said, “I have sinned against the Lord,” he acknowledged it and spoke it aloud. He did not hide it or alter it.
He did not twist the truth or justify himself, but said, “Yes, I have sinned against the Lord.” And God forgave him immediately. Do you see how quickly God forgives? Do you see it, I ask you? Yet in David’s remarkable story, I would like to dwell on one particular point.
How can I put it? It is exceptionally important. Pay attention; I shall read you the text. Yes, the prophet tells him, God will forgive you. He has already forgiven you. “Nevertheless,” he says, “you have greatly provoked the enemies of the Lord. You already had many enemies because of your righteousness, but your chastity guarded you. Now that you have betrayed your greatest weapon, you have prepared your enemies to rise against you.” This, word for word, is written, my beloved, in 2 Samuel 12:14. It is a very important point. Did you hear it? Very well, he says, God has forgiven you. But can there be a “nevertheless” when God forgives us? My beloved, whenever God judges it necessary, He adds a “nevertheless.” And this “nevertheless”…
We must keep it in mind. It is this: “You have greatly provoked.” This is a Hebrew construction that intensifies the word “provoked.” In other words, you have angered the enemies of the Lord; you have enraged the enemies of the Lord.
You had many enemies, he said—enemies of your virtue and righteousness—but your chastity, your purity, guarded you. You did not go with women; that is, you did not fall into sexual immorality. But now you yourself have betrayed the greatest weapon. And what is that greatest weapon? Chastity. “You have now prepared the enemies to rise against you.” The enemies of the Lord stand ready to turn against you. What does this mean? God forgives me, but now God’s enemies will attack me? What is this about? The passage seems strange—very strange indeed. But when we examine it, you will understand.
First of all, David’s enemies here were subjects of his own kingdom who could not stand him. I shall mention just one brief incident, which Saint Cyril refers to a little later—not in connection with the passage I have just read, but as another image he sets before us. When David fled barefoot from his palace, driven into self-imposed exile—this is why he was leaving barefoot—because his son Absalom had rebelled against him, he barely escaped with a few followers. As he fled, one of his subjects, Shimei, seized the opportunity. “When the oak has fallen, every man gathers wood from it.” He seized the opportunity…
He thought, “The king has fallen; now there is another king,” and began insulting David along the road, following behind him. He hurled abuse at him, saying, “You scoundrel! Look at you now—you who ruled in such a way, you who were unjust, you who were…” He said many things, because Shimei had once suffered some punishment. These are the discontented citizens—listen carefully—the citizens dissatisfied with a regime.
And now this man found his opportunity and reviled David. David said nothing, but his companions were indignant. David kept walking as he fled eastward toward the Jordan, hoping to cross the river and escape from his son Absalom and the army he had gathered—to save his own life.
His companions said to him, “Let us kill him,” because the man was so troublesome along the way that he threw stones and dirt at David from behind. Imagine someone following behind you, constantly and unceasingly insulting you and throwing dirt and stones at you. But David said, “No, no, leave him alone. Perhaps when God sees my patient endurance, He will forgive my own sins.” This is a great and beautiful saying. But Shimei was David’s enemy, and now he rose against him and insulted him because David had, for a time, lost his throne on account of that sin of adultery.
What later happened to Absalom is well known, but I shall say no more. I should not say more. Read these things in 2 Samuel; you will find them very interesting. But how, precisely, did this enemy of the king suddenly emerge? He emerged when the king fell from his position. Why did the king fall from his position? Why did he lose his throne? Why did he lose his throne? Because he had lost his chastity, and now God was no longer protecting him. Chastity, then, had been a weapon. My beloved, pay attention. Beyond the visible enemies—because there is, we might say, a historical basis here—there are also the unseen spiritual enemies: the demons. As you know, the demons are enemies of God. When the demons see us…
…cultivating the virtues, they become our furious enemies, but they cannot harm us, because, as the text says, “Chastity guards us”—purity guards us. Once you lose your purity and fall into sexual immorality, Christ may forgive you if you repent. But the demons will trouble you because you have lost the weapon of chastity. And do you know how far this harassment can go? It begins with what may seem the mildest case: images of the sin remain in your mind and torment you. That is no small thing, though I have called it mild…
Compared with the other, more serious case—or the other, more serious cases—even to the point of suffering demonic possession. Did you hear that? Even to the point of suffering demonic possession. What is this demonic possession? Well, what can I tell you? It is an issue that I have only recently begun to deal with. Why should I tell you about it now? Perhaps one day we will give a special talk on it. I have gathered a great deal of material, and I am still gathering more. I have been so astonished that I do not know what to say. Perhaps our age, or our generation, is a generation of demon-possessed people. It is a terrible thing, truly terrible. How and by what means do people become demon-possessed? Sins of the flesh, and especially perversions, bring a person under demonic possession. So does blasphemy against the things of God.
It brings a person under demonic possession. If someone reads about Eastern religions, Buddhism, and so forth—not simply for apologetic purposes, but because he wants to learn about them, perhaps to be initiated into them, perhaps because he is seeking something—he comes under demonic possession. I have quite a number of such examples, including a very recent case, and I have begun to ask, “What is happening?” Very many people, especially our young people, are reading about Eastern religions.
Take heed! Whoever experiments on himself with spiritualism and magic comes under demonic possession. Whoever listens to a great deal of rock music comes under demonic possession—especially when he puts on those headphones. I have a definite example from just the last few days, and it is horrifying. If you had seen the state of demonic possession that this young man was in, you would have been terrified. They put on those headphones and listen through those high-quality tape recorders, listening in stereo—listening to rock music. The mother of this young man, a sixteen-year-old adolescent, told me, “When he listens to this music, he smashes everything in the house.” He comes under demonic possession. But you do not have to look far to see it. Wherever a rock concert is held, the whole crowd...
The young people there come under demonic possession. Why do they not become demon-possessed when they listen to a concert of classical music, popular music, folk music, choral music, or anything else, but become demon-possessed specifically through rock music? I assure you, there are many things today that bring young people under demonic possession. We see, so to speak, a wide spectrum of demonic possession: sometimes in the body, sometimes in the soul, and sometimes in both, with many degrees and many different forms. And so, when we truly betray—or rather, surrender—the weapons that guard us, such as chastity, purity, and so forth...
Christ forgives us when we repent, but the enraged demons do not cease waging war against us. You may say, “The explanation you have given us does not satisfy me.” You may say, “I do not find it satisfactory.” Why? Let me explain. It is well known that ancestral sin is forgiven in Baptism, yet the inclination toward evil remains. Through Baptism we receive help to overcome that inclination toward evil. It is not removed; it is restrained. Yet the inclination toward evil still remains. Why does God forgive us through Baptism both ancestral sin and our personal sins, but leave the inclination, the tendency, behind? You might say it is so that there may be an element of spiritual struggle. But would this have existed in Adam? No. If our first parents had not sinned, would there have been an inclination toward evil? No. Yet God allows it to remain. Why does He leave it? As we have said, He leaves it so that we may struggle. But again you may tell me, “We still do not understand this very well.” My dear friends, at the same time it is also a punishment. The punishment is not removed. It is not removed. This is something strange. That is to say...
You commit an immoral act, contract an illness, and then go to confession. God forgives the sin you committed, but He does not heal the illness; He allows it to remain. This is what we mean regarding the body. Why is that? Someone may suffer a mental disorder because of his many sins; that is, his nervous system no longer functions properly. Without question, once he is forgiven, he may recover. But he may also not recover; God may not heal him. Why, my dear friends, does some punishment remain? It remains as a scourge, to humble the person and remind him that he sinned. He has indeed been forgiven, but he must not raise his head in pride again.
Thank you. Deep down, this has a disciplinary purpose. I could give you other examples as well. Do you remember that incestuous man in Corinth, of whom the Apostle Paul says, “I have delivered him to Satan”? Do you know what “I have delivered him to Satan” means? It means that the devil may strike him and wear him down, so that he may repent and be disciplined. This seems strange. Do you hear? “I have delivered him,” he says, “to Satan.”
This means that the man may have suffered some illness. He repented, because afterward, in his other epistle, the Apostle Paul urges the Corinthians to reaffirm their love for him. But he does not tell us whether that illness eventually went away. Holy Scripture does not tell us. It is possible that the illness remained. The man was forgiven. Indeed, the Apostle says that his body should be destroyed so that his spirit may be saved. Listen to that phrase. Let his body waste away in illness, but let him repent; let his repentance remain vividly present to him, imposed upon him, so to speak, so that his spirit may be saved on the day of judgment. The illness is not removed. Do these things surprise you? Here, then, is the conclusion.
Thank you. If someone says, “I will sin and then go and be forgiven,” he is foolish. He is foolish. For you have let the devil enter you; just try getting him out afterward. The passions, after all, are represented by demons. So, as you understand, my dear friends, this matter is extremely serious. You see that I have underlined it here in red, precisely because I considered it a central point of our gathering this evening. Let us therefore take care not to sin. Let us be exceedingly watchful. Surely there must be people among us who have not committed the sins I mentioned. The younger people especially must guard themselves in every possible way. Let them not say, “I will try it, and afterward I will repent.” No—let them never say that.
You see all the consequences of such a transgression. Saint Cyril then speaks of Solomon, who also committed many sins. Of course, Solomon’s principal sin was idolatry. It was not that he himself worshiped idols;
rather, he permitted his wives—women he had married from outside his own people—to impose their will upon him. So as not to displease them, he built idolatrous temples belonging to the religion of each wife within the land of God’s people. This was a very grave sin. To show you how grave it was, it is enough to say that after Solomon the kingdom was divided in two. It was never reunited, and both kingdoms endured great suffering, especially the Northern Kingdom, which was almost annihilated. And I do not know whether, in the twentieth century, that region might once again belong to Israel and become one people again after three thousand years, for the history we are discussing took place around 1100 BC. The point is that Solomon, who had sinned, himself writes, “Afterward I repented.” This is in Proverbs 24:32. And because Solomon repented, he belongs to the company of the righteous.
How great is the value of metanoia—repentance! Saint Cyril then speaks of Naboth. Ahab was a worthless king of the Northern Kingdom, one of that line of kings who ruled the Northern Kingdom and possessed nothing but a tradition of idolatry carried to a desperate extreme. Ahab, my dear friends, was a dreadful king: wicked, truly wicked. He had a fearsome wife, Jezebel, an idolatress, of course, and a Syrophoenician. She led him by the nose and did whatever she pleased. You cannot imagine the evil she caused throughout the Northern Kingdom of Samaria. Now, on one occasion Ahab coveted the vineyard of a man named Naboth. The king wanted to buy it, join it to his own vineyard, and turn the whole area into a garden, a large estate. So he summoned Naboth and told him to sell it. Naboth replied, “I cannot do that.” The Law forbade it. It was his ancestral inheritance, and he was obliged to keep it. Ahab became distressed. Jezebel asked him, “Why are you distressed?” He explained what had happened. “Oh, you poor man,” she said, “it is very simple.” She found some false witnesses and made arrangements with the judges—corrupt judges and false witnesses—to accuse Naboth of...
Blaspheming the name of God, an offense punishable by stoning. When the man heard this, he was astonished. “I blasphemed?” “Yes, yes,” the witnesses—the false witnesses—said. “We heard you.” They seized him, my dear friends, and stoned him. Then the king took possession of his property, as a royal right, we might say. This was the custom of that age. As you know, in the time of the martyrs as well, a person’s property passed to the emperor when he was sentenced to death on the charge of plotting against the security of the state. For this was the accusation brought against the Christian martyrs. And so Naboth, my dear friends, was stoned. Then the Prophet Elijah came down and said to Ahab:
“You will pay dearly for the crime you have committed. The dogs will lick your blood, and as for Jezebel, the dogs will devour her.” When Ahab heard this, he was moved and filled with katanyxis, with compunction, and said, “I ask God’s forgiveness; I have sinned.” At that very moment, God said to the Prophet Elijah, “Have you seen? Ahab has repented. Because of this repentance, I will not bring upon him during his lifetime the things I told him would happen...
For the destruction of his kingdom, and so forth. I will not bring these things about in his days; he will die in peace.” And Saint Cyril observes that although God, who knows every heart and knows all things, knew that Ahab would return to his former ways and renounce his repentance, nevertheless God said this and forgave him, so that these evils would not come upon Ahab. For, as I told you, this wretched man ultimately renounced his repentance. Thus the case of Ahab reveals the following truth to us. Someone may ask, “May I sin again?” Do not sin again. God will forgive you; even though God may know that you will sin, He forgives you. Here, then, we have this remarkable truth—but never as a premeditated scheme, because God will under no circumstances accept such scheming. He strikes it down. It applies only when someone falls through weakness: you fell, rise again; you fell again, rise again; God will forgive you. If we were never to fall, my dear friends, we would have to become perfect within twenty-four hours. Have you ever seen anyone become perfect within twenty-four hours? Not even one of the Saints ever became perfect within twenty-four hours. This means that I will struggle not to fall. But I fell.
I will rise again, repent again, weep, and feel the pain of repentance, and God will forgive me. Thus the story of Ahab reveals this great truth: although God knows that we may sin again, He nevertheless forgives us. On this basis, we too often say that we can see another person may fall again. Is it possible that he will not fall again? Is it possible? He may tell you, “I tell lies, but I repent; I will not tell lies again.” At that moment he says it from his heart, but we no longer place our confidence in man, because we know he will tell another lie. Do we offer the prayer of absolution? We do. This is very important. Then, my dear friends, Saint Cyril speaks of Manasseh, that dreadful king of the Southern Kingdom, who was the greatest...
Idolater among the kings of the Southern Kingdom. And yet, when Nebuchadnezzar dragged him away as a captive to Babylon, and there he prayed to God and repented, God forgave him and allowed him to return as Nebuchadnezzar’s governor and reign once again over his former province. Saint Cyril then speaks of Hezekiah. He too had once sinned and become ill. The Prophet Isaiah went to him and said, “Set your house in order”; that is, make your will, for you are going to die. When the prophet told him, “You are going to die,” Hezekiah, lying sick in bed, turned his face to the wall. There he wept bitterly and begged God to forgive him. After saying this, the Prophet Isaiah left the king’s chamber and went down into the courtyard. God said to him, “Go back. Hezekiah has repented. Tell him that I grant him another fifteen years of life.” And Saint Cyril says here, “Do you see? The thick walls of the king’s chamber did not prevent his prayer from reaching God.” In other words, wherever you may be and whatever your condition—sick in bed, or cast into a pit like Jeremiah...
Whatever your condition may be, God hears you. It is enough to have katanyxis—compunction of heart. And Saint Cyril says: “Turn aside, groan within yourself, shut your door, and pray.” Notice: turn aside, turn your head, groan, shut your door, and pray. This is truly something of the utmost importance.
Then came the Babylonian captivity. Among the captives were the three young men we know so well, together with Daniel. These four young men were exceedingly devout, exceedingly pious, exceedingly chaste, and exceedingly holy—so remarkable that even Nebuchadnezzar himself marveled at them. Their wisdom was extraordinary. Daniel himself was called by God “a man greatly beloved.” Did you hear what God called him? “A man greatly beloved.” This is a Hebrew expression. How might we render it in Greek today? One who is dearly loved, one who is greatly desired, the man who is close to my heart.
And just think: who gave him this description? God Himself. So these three young men—it appears that Daniel was away at the time, perhaps somewhere else—were present when Nebuchadnezzar set up that golden statue, probably an image of Marduk, not a statue of himself. There is some confusion here. Many people think that Nebuchadnezzar set up his own statue, his own image, to be worshiped. That was not the case. It was a statue of the god Marduk, because in this way he wanted the religion of the Babylonians to become universal throughout the lands he had conquered, in order to secure national unity. It was one of those strategic political plans which, truth be told, continue to this day...
These plans are nothing new. That is why conquerors always try to create various forms of unity, one of which is religious unity. And you know that ecumenism—here I will make a brief aside and depart slightly from my subject—is nothing other than an attempt to bring all religions under one roof, in order to secure universality among the nations and the unity of the nations, supposedly to avert wars. Supposedly. In reality, ecumenism, through this universal religion, opens the way for the Antichrist, who will demand this unity of the nations. Did you know that? Has such a building not been erected in America? A large temple has been built, I tell you,
a large building of a special design, beneath whose roof several religions coexist: Buddhism, Islam, and so forth. Under the same roof, each one worships its own god, so to speak, yet all are beneath that one roof. Do you know what remains to be done now? To tear down the dividing walls, the bricks, so that we may say, “Now we are all together.” All these things, then, are preliminary steps toward bringing about the phenomenon, the reality, of ecumenism. That is the aim. It is among the strategic plans promoted, I must tell you, by the United Nations. And here is the strange thing: Russia also promotes ecumenism—and in saying this, I am not engaging in politics—
as do the Americans. Both powers promote ecumenism. It is in keeping with this policy that Russia has sent, and continues to send, Orthodox representatives to the World Council of Churches. It is also in keeping with this policy that the Russians accepted intercommunion only two, three, or four years ago—I do not now remember exactly how many years it has been. And do you know what that means? Sharing Holy Communion with the Roman Catholics. You see how they place the Orthodox Church at the service of politics. When the Russians accepted the sharing of the Mysteries,
so that Orthodox Christians could receive Holy Communion in Roman Catholic churches and Roman Catholics could do the same in Orthodox churches, all the other Orthodox Churches were horrified and regarded this as a coup against dogma and the faith. The reason is quite simple: both East and West wish to advance ecumenism precisely for the sake of a universal religion. Of course, there are other forms of ecumenism as well. Roman Catholicism wants to establish an ecumenism of its own, a Roman Catholic ecumenism. That is why the Roman Catholics are not members of the World Council of Churches, but participate only as observers. Yet the Protestants, who of course do belong to the World Council of Churches, would also like,
in accordance with political ambitions, to establish a Protestant form of ecumenism. These, then, are dark powers—truly dark powers. So it was in the days of Nebuchadnezzar as well. You see, these plans are ancient, not new; we find them throughout history. “There is nothing new under the sun.” This is what he too wished to accomplish. He commanded all the peoples, represented by delegates from every nation Nebuchadnezzar had conquered, to bow down before the golden statue of Marduk, the god of Babylon. The Three Holy Youths did not bow down. Saint Cyril refers here to the first of them, Hananiah. Hananiah, Azariah, and Mishael—those were the three whom Saint Cyril mentions.
They were cast into the fiery furnace. As we know, in the end they were not burned, but were found praying. Do you know what prayer Hananiah offered on behalf of the other two as well? Listen to his prayer: “O Lord, You punish us justly”—even as God was delivering them from the fire—“because we rejected You, because we sinned against You, because we forgot You, both we and our fathers.” They were speaking on behalf of their nation. These men, these youths, were most holy—you heard that, they were most holy—and yet they asked for God’s mercy, showing metanoia, repentance, on behalf of their people. For they were saying: “If we had not sinned as a people, would we have been dragged here to Babylon and forced to worship foreign gods? Certainly not. But You are chastening us, O Lord; forgive us.” If you read this prayer of Hananiah in the Old Testament, in the Book of Daniel, and read it attentively, considering the weight of every word, you will truly be moved, my dear friends. Afterward, all three together burst into that well-known hymn, praising God who had saved them. And Saint Cyril says here:
“Where the flame rose a little higher, there faith poured forth like a river, and there they spoke the antidote to evils.” There, within the furnace, they were speaking the antidote to evils. Ah, notice what a beautiful phrase that is: the antidote to evils. And what is it? To declare God righteous and to hold yourself responsible. What, then, did they say? “Righteous are You, O Lord, in all that You have done to us; for we have sinned and acted lawlessly.” And Saint Cyril now says that metanoia, repentance, extinguished the flames—not only the flame that would have burned the three young men, but also the flames of captivity, so that the people might be set free and return home, after they had, of course, remained captive in that land for seventy whole years. Finally, he refers to Nebuchadnezzar. But you see, up to this point we have spoken mainly about people belonging to the people of God. So what place does Nebuchadnezzar have here? The same place as the Ninevites, my dear friends: they repented and were saved. Nebuchadnezzar, then, was a terrifying king. His memory has remained deeply impressed upon the peoples. Nebuchadnezzar was a man who inspired fear and dread. He was never defeated anywhere. In all the battles he fought, he never once lost; he won them all.
He amassed a vast quantity of gold in his capital and built a Babylon whose hanging gardens were not its only wonder; the entire city was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. At one point, this man came to believe that he was God. Here we see that as soon as a prideful thought enters, demonic possession follows. One day he went up onto the roof of his palace and looked out over the city, with its canals fed by the river, its hanging gardens, its magnificent buildings, and all the rest. His heart was filled with arrogance, pride, and self-exaltation. And the moment he felt this exaltation rising in his heart, my dear friends,
he heard a voice telling him that he would go mad—that he would lose his reason and graze on grass in the mountains like a wild beast. This is a dreadful thing, you know, truly dreadful. Do not tell me that this sounds somewhat mythical or exaggerated. My dear friends, people filled with extreme arrogance have suffered a derangement of their reason. Listen carefully to how I put it: such people become demonically possessed; the devil takes up residence in their soul and robs them of their reason. Let us be very watchful against arrogance and pride. Nebuchadnezzar, then, received this warning. Daniel explained to him that God is true and that disaster would befall him.
In the meantime, he had also seen a dream, which Daniel interpreted, but Nebuchadnezzar paid no attention. Then one day he suddenly went mad and suffered this condition: he had the sensation that he was an animal. There is an illness, a psychiatric disorder, a form of mental illness, in which a person thinks he is something else. For example—and though this may sound a little like a joke, it corresponds to a real condition—a person may believe that he is a kernel of corn and that chickens will eat him. Yes, that is how it is. I am speaking offhand now, as you can see. I have nothing with me except four notes, nothing else. But I had found both the category and the name of this mental illness. I cannot remember the name to tell you. Well done!
Vats, thank you very much. It is called lycanthropy: a person believes that he is an animal. Nebuchadnezzar suffered from this illness. He believed he was an animal, walked on all fours, and ate grass from the ground. The hair on his head grew long, his nails grew long, and he became like a beast. In time, however, the illness passed. He came to himself and, after his illness, repented. He then issued a proclamation and said, “The God of the Hebrews”—for Daniel had told him, “The true God whom we worship is chastening you for your arrogance”—“the God of the Hebrews is indeed the true God. And therefore I command:
‘I command that no one ever speak an offensive word against the true God, the God of the Hebrews.’” And how was Nebuchadnezzar saved? Because he repented as a result of this. God knew that when He restored Nebuchadnezzar’s reason, he would repent, for God is all-knowing. So He allowed him to live, to repent, and to regain his kingdom. Do you see, then, the power of forgiveness and metanoia, repentance? Saint Cyril concludes his Second Catechetical Lecture in this way: “Therefore, brethren, having many examples of those who sinned, repented, and were saved, eagerly do you also”—that is, “confess to the Lord,” you yourselves, meaning you or us—“so that you too may receive forgiveness for the sins you committed in the past, be counted worthy of the heavenly gift, and inherit the Kingdom of Heaven with all the Saints in Christ Jesus, to whom be glory unto the ages of ages. Amen.” I too believe, my dear friends, that through what the Word of God has told us by the pen of Saint Cyril, something will surely take place within our hearts. And I can tell you this as a witness to at least some of the changes that take place within your hearts.
Indeed, I have told you on other occasions what I am saying now. After hearing one sermon or another, some people come and tell me that they felt they needed to go to Holy Confession. This shows that the seed falls and sprouts. This truly is the power of the Word of God: it moves the heart, shakes it, turns it upside down, and brings forth metanoia, repentance, Holy Confession, and then salvation. Someone came to me today and said—I say “someone,” without saying whether it was a man or a woman—“I heard your sermon yesterday and said to myself, ‘I must go to Holy Confession without delay.’” For five years this person had been tormented by a sin and was ashamed to confess it. “No matter what, I will go to Holy Confession.” And the person came and confessed. There you have it. Do you see what the Word of God does?
Of course, it is the Word of God. Therefore, let us always keep the Word of God as our companion, so that He may fashion our hearts into a true Paradise of God.

Μες στο παλάτι και του λέγει: «Εσύ έκανες αυτή την πράξη, έκανες αυτή την πράξη». Βέβαια, ποιος την είχε δει την πράξη αυτή; Μόνο ο Δαβίδ, μόνο αυτός την ήξερε. Την ήξερε και ο Θεός και την αποκαλύπτει στον προφήτη Του. Και εμφανίζεται ο προφήτης κατήγορος τώρα, από προσώπου του Θεού. Όταν τον ήλεγξε ο προφήτης — βέβαια, έπρεπε να σας διάβαζα το κείμενο, που τα περιγράφει πολύ ωραία ο Άγιος Κύριλος — λέγει: «Μήπως ήρθε κανένας πιο υψηλότερος από τον Δαβίδ; Όχι», λέγει, «ήρθε ένας ιδιώτης». Και ήρθε να ελέγξει ποιον;
Πράγματι, κι άλλες φορές σας το έχω πει αυτό που λέω τώρα. Από κάποια ομιλία που θα ακούσετε, κάποιοι θα έρθουν να μου πουν ότι αισθάνθηκαν ότι έπρεπε να εξομολογηθούν. Αυτό δείχνει ότι πέφτει ο σπόρος και βλαστάνει. Αυτή είναι η δύναμη πραγματικά του Λόγου του Θεού, που επιφέρει, αναστατώνει, αναποδογυρίζει την καρδιά, δημιουργεί τη μετάνοια, την εξομολόγηση και κατόπιν τη σωτηρία. Ένα πρόσωπο σήμερα ήρθε και μου είπε — ένα πρόσωπο, δεν λέω ένας άνδρας ή γυναίκα, ένα πρόσωπο — «Άκουσα το χθεσινό σας κήρυγμα και είπα: Ανυπερθέτως πρέπει να πάω να εξομολογηθώ». Πέντε χρόνια βασανίζεται για μία αμαρτία. Εντρέπετο να πει την αμαρτία. «Τίποτα, θα πάω να εξομολογηθώ». Και ήρθε και εξομολογήθη. Ορίστε. Είδατε τι κάνει ο Λόγος του Θεού;
