Summary

Saint Cyril’s Second Catechetical Lecture teaches that sincere repentance and confession cleanse, sanctify, and justify the sinner before God. Rahab’s inclusion in the Messiah’s genealogy, together with Tamar, Ruth, and Bathsheba, shows that God’s mercy embraces repentant sinners and people from every nation. The lecture applies this warning to modern Greek society, portraying the displacement of Orthodox faith by Western rationalistic humanism as a collective apostasy that requires national repentance.

We are now in the ninth paragraph of Saint Cyril’s Second Catechetical Lecture. I should point out that Saint Cyril delivered this Second Catechetical Lecture, of course, at a single gathering of catechumens. Here, as you can see, we are studying that same lecture over a series of hour-long sessions. You may wonder why. I would answer as follows: the catechumens certainly received many lessons. The lessons we have here were given toward the end of their instruction, when they had become those preparing for illumination, so that they might receive a thorough grounding in the faith.

This does not mean, however, that they did not study Holy Scripture or hear the word of God. Thus, when Saint Cyril refers to certain things only briefly, he assumes that his audience already knows them. For example, when he speaks here—as he did last time—of Noah, Adam, or Cain as examples of repentance, his listeners are already familiar with these people and their stories. That is why he does not explain them in greater detail. But we are not familiar with them. We must admit this, because we do not read Holy Scripture. We ought to study Holy Scripture, both the Old Testament and the New Testament. Consequently, we are compelled to do more than simply mention the names of those who repented,

but also a description of their individual circumstances. That, of course, is why our analysis takes so long. And now I would like to tell you that Saint Cyril continues with examples of people who repented and, through their metanoia, drew down the mercy of God and received forgiveness. Here, in his Second Catechetical Lecture, he wishes to show the great value of metanoia and confession: through repentance and confession, a person is cleansed before God, justified, and granted the grace of God. This is what the Apostle Paul says to the Corinthians when he refers to a series of very grave sins.

Speaking of very grave sins, he says, “And such were some of you.” “Do not be deceived: neither fornicators, nor adulterers, nor the effeminate, nor men who have sex with men, nor thieves, nor drunkards, and so on, shall inherit the Kingdom of God.” As I told you, these are very grave sins. Then he says, “And such were some of you.” Some of you lived in these very sins. “But now you have been washed clean.” Notice the verb, “you have been washed clean”; you have been bathed. He means the washing of regeneration, which is Baptism. But if we have already been baptized, there is a second washing: the washing of repentance. “But now you have been sanctified; but now you have been justified.” Notice this threefold presentation. He says: “You have been washed clean; you have been sanctified...”

“You were justified.” “You were washed” describes what was taken away; that is, you were cleansed. But “you were sanctified” and “you were justified” describe what was positively given to you. This means that you were not only cleansed, but also made holy. And not only were you made holy, but you were also acknowledged as children of God. That is what “you were justified” means.

A person is justified, sanctified, and cleansed through metanoia—repentance—and confession. This is of immense value, truly immense. That is why no one should ever hesitate to come forward, confess, and receive Holy Communion. Glory to God, each person is free to find the confessor he wishes and to go wherever he wishes for confession—with sincerity, of course. No one tells him that he must reveal his name if he does not wish to, and so forth. For, quite simply, although in the ancient Church the Mystery of confession was public—yes, public; people confessed openly—the Church saw the difficulty this caused for believers who had sinned, and so, seeing this, made the following pastoral accommodation: it arranged for confession to...

They now confess privately, without publicly revealing their sins. What more could you want? My dear friends, even if we had only Baptism and did not have Holy Confession, God would still be merciful and loving toward mankind. But because He knows how very easily we slip and fall afterward, He also gives us the Mystery of Holy Confession. It used to be public; the Church made it private. What more could you want? No one hears us, no one sees us—only God: God acting through the spiritual father, and no one else. So we can go and find a spiritual father wherever we wish, even at the North Pole—wherever we wish—so long as we confess sincerely and, of course, conceal nothing. And now, as I told you earlier, Saint Cyril continues with his examples.

people who repented and were justified by God. We are now in the ninth paragraph. The handout you are holding begins with the tenth paragraph. “Let us now turn to the others who were saved through repentance. But perhaps someone among the women will say, ‘I committed fornication, I committed adultery, I defiled my body with every kind of sexual immorality. Is there salvation for me?’” He is now addressing the case of women as well. A woman might say, “I committed fornication, I committed adultery, I defiled my body with every form of sexual immorality—with every kind of impurity. Is there salvation for me?” A woman might ask this. What does Saint Cyril say now?

“Look to Rahab, O woman, and you too may hope for salvation. For if she who openly and publicly lived as a prostitute was saved through repentance, shall a woman who once fell into fornication before receiving grace not be saved through repentance and fasting? Ask, then, how Rahab was saved. She said only this: ‘Your God is God in heaven and upon the earth—your God.’ Because of her licentious life, she did not dare to call Him her own God. And if you wish to accept that she was saved, you have written testimony recorded in the Psalms: ‘I will make mention of Rahab and Babylon among those who know Me.’ O how great is God’s loving-kindness: the Scriptures even make mention of prostitutes! Yet not without qualification...”

“I will remember Rahab and Babylon,” but together with the words, “among those who know Me.” Therefore, salvation through repentance is offered equally to men and women. I read you the entire paragraph so that I would have some freedom in developing the subject and could give a more detailed historical analysis, helping us understand certain things. A woman, of course, might say, “I have committed many sins. Will I be forgiven?” Well then, Saint Cyril says, come and let me show you the life of a woman who was a prostitute, so that you may learn from her example. And he presents Rahab as that example. Rahab or Rachab—it is the same name. Who, then, was this Rahab, notorious and yet renowned at the same time?

Notorious for her sins, renowned for her noble deeds. Listen. When Joshua sent spies to reconnoiter Jericho—to find out what kind of city it was, whether it was fortified or not, what sort of inhabitants it had, what their culture was like, what the disposition of these people was, what wealth they possessed, and so on—there were two spies. This was Joshua the son of Nun. The inhabitants discovered them and, of course, quickly moved to arrest them. But the spies managed first to enter the house of a prostitute named Rahab, whose house was...

built into the city wall. They went inside and begged her to hide them, so that they might escape the pursuit they were already facing. And indeed, this woman, a prostitute, hid them. Those who were searching for them came in, and she said to them, “Yes, two Israelites did indeed come in here.” Bear in mind that the Israelites and their encampment were not far away. After all, they had spent forty years in the wilderness, wandering through those desolate places. The presence of the Hebrews was well known, and the surrounding peoples were afraid of them, just as the Moabites were truly afraid of the Hebrews.

That is what they did: they used this ruse to make them sin through fornication. So Rahab hid the men and said, “Yes, they did indeed come here, but they have now left.” “Where did they go?” “Look, they took this road and went on their way.” Naturally, the men went as far as the Jordan River to search for them. But the spies were hidden in Rahab’s house. Then Rahab brought them out of their hiding place and lowered them from her window down the city wall, so that they could escape. She said to them, “Do not go toward the Jordan. Go instead into those mountains and remain there for a few days, so that the search party sent to find you will not discover you. Afterward, return to your camp.” And then she said the following:

Listen to what Rahab the prostitute said: “Your God is God in heaven and upon the earth—your God.” Your God, who is God in heaven and on earth—I know that He is the true God. And I know that you will defeat us here, in our city. I know it. How did she know? She believed. Listen: she believed. She too is numbered among those who believed through faith and were saved. Faith alone. She believed. Yet, as Saint Cyril observes here in his interpretation, she did not dare to say, “our God,” but only, “your God.”

This shows that she was fully aware that she was an idolater and a prostitute. She was a corrupt woman. Indeed, this was her profession, and she pursued it, if you will, rather shamelessly even in relation to her mother and father. Do you think her mother and father were not ashamed? Holy Scripture itself tells us this. Do you know what it says? Listen. She says, “I saved you. When you come to take the city, you will capture it, because God is true and He is with you. But I ask one favor of you: I want you to save me—not only me, but also my father, my mother, and my relatives.” Her mother and father lived in the same house and, of course, tolerated it. They did not approve of it, but they tolerated it—her own parents tolerated...

their daughter’s profession as a prostitute. Why should that surprise us, when even Christians tolerate such a thing, my dear friends! Christian parents tolerate their own daughter being a prostitute. How much more, then, would pagans tolerate it? So the spies said, “Very well, we agree. But be careful,” they told her. “You must give us a sign. When we come and surround the city, you must hang a red cloth from your window. And be careful not to forget to put out the red cloth, because otherwise we shall be released from our oath and from the obligation we undertook toward you at your request. For you also saved our lives.”

“Only those who are inside your house will be saved. We are telling you this plainly.” And she agreed, my dear friends, that it should be so. Indeed, when the city was taken, Joshua son of Nun had commanded that no one be left alive. You may ask me about that—and whatever you might say, you would have a point. But this is not the time to address the question of why no one was to be left alive. I will not speak about it now; this is not the proper moment. Yet although all the inhabitants of Jericho were slain, Rahab and her relatives were spared. This Rahab—or Rachab—played a very important role. Can you imagine it? She became an ancestor of the Messiah.

Can you imagine? A man named Salmon married her, and they had descendants. King David was the fifth generation after Rahab—the fifth generation. So Rahab was David’s great-grandmother, five generations removed. David had Rahab, the prostitute, among his ancestors. And precisely because she belongs to the genealogy of the Messiah—an astonishing thing, my dear friends—Matthew mentions four women. Yet he does not mention Sarah, who was a wonderful woman,

who gave birth to Isaac according to the promise, and so on. Neither Sarah, nor Rebecca, nor Leah, nor Rachel—those great women of the Patriarchs—are mentioned. Instead, four women are named. The first is Tamar, who committed what appears to be a very grave sin, though in the end it was not counted as sin. For us it would be a sin: she secretly went to her father-in-law in order to conceive a child. But this is not the time to discuss that. Yet this act of Tamar’s was counted to her as faith. So there is Tamar, then Rahab, and after her Ruth, who was a Moabite. Rahab had been an idolater. Later, of course, she entered the people of God and came to believe in the true God. And then...

Then there was Bathsheba, who had fallen into adultery with David, and so on. Ruth was a woman of the greatest purity and honor, yet she was a Moabite. And the Law said that a Moabite could not enter the people of God even to the tenth generation—in other words, never. That is what “to the tenth generation” means: never. And the striking thing is that Matthew mentions these four women by name. It is deliberately provocative, meant to make us consider what this means: that they received mercy, that they were forgiven, and that all nations will be saved, for these women were both sinners and foreigners. They did not belong to the people of God, yet they became part of the people of God, and that it is still possible to be saved—

every person can be saved, whatever their condition may be. Such, then, was Rahab. And not only that, but she is also remembered in one of the Psalms, as Saint Cyril recalls and quotes here: “I will make mention of Rahab and Babylon among those who know Me.” This is Psalm 86, verse 4. “I will remember,” God says, “Rahab and Babylon, who know Me, while you Hebrews, who are My people, reject Me and neither know nor acknowledge Me.” Do you see? So let no one say, “I have committed this sin and that sin.” Who was Rahab? I have told you her whole story, and she truly was saved.

She was counted worthy of great honor. Do you know what it means to become an ancestor of the Messiah? That is no small thing. This is what Esau lost when he sold his birthright and handed it over to his brother: Esau did not become an ancestor of the Messiah.

You see? It is an immense subject, truly immense. But let us continue.

“An entire people sinned, yet God’s loving-kindness was not overcome. The people made a golden calf, yet God did not abandon His loving-kindness. The people denied God, but God did not deny Himself. ‘These are your gods, O Israel,’ they cried, and yet once again the God of Israel, as was His wont, became their Savior. And it was not only the people who sinned, but Aaron the high priest as well. For Moses says, ‘The anger of the Lord also came upon Aaron’; and Moses says that he prayed for him, and God forgave him. If, then, Moses, by interceding for a high priest who had sinned, moved the Lord to mercy, will not Jesus, the Only-Begotten, by interceding for us, move God to mercy? God did not prevent Aaron from entering the high priesthood because of his transgression; will He prevent you, who have come from among the nations, from entering into salvation? Therefore, O man, repent in the same way, and grace will not be withheld from you.” Saint Cyril goes further: not only individuals, but even an entire people may sin, and God can forgive that people as well. For the sins of a whole people cannot overcome the loving-kindness of God.

Here he gives the example of Israel’s making of the golden calf. But before we examine that, I would like to say this: our people today truly have many sins. Of course, every nation has sins—not merely as individual persons, but as a people. This distinction is extremely important: we must look not only at individuals, but at the people as a whole. I repeat, it is extremely important. There are deeds committed not by particular persons, but by a people collectively. At this time, our people bear terrible sins. And when I say “at this time,” I mean, of course, for the past hundred and sixty years or so—that is, since 1821—as I have mentioned to you here before.

You remember it, but there is no harm in saying it again: our people began to sin as they had not sinned during the four hundred years of servitude under the Turks. I repeat, I mean the people as a whole. And what was the sin of our people? Certainly not fornication and adultery. Those concerned each citizen, each person, and each Christian individually. The beginning of our people’s sin was this: the Greeks who were living in Europe had studied abroad. They had not shared in the anguish of our people, but had lived and studied in the security of Europe. Long before, these people had lost their Greek and Orthodox identity.

They may perhaps still have believed in the ideal of Greece, but they no longer believed in the Orthodox Church, because they had suffered considerable spiritual corruption abroad in Europe. Even their Greek conviction and love had been corrupted. Let us not forget that. Yet these people, estranged from the anguish and trials of our nation, wished to come to Greece after its liberation and govern our people. But by then, they had already become strangers to the sentiments of the people.

They attempted to bring European Western humanism into Greece and use it to replace the Church. This was not something entirely new even for them, because European humanism had already begun to enter during the final years of the Byzantine Empire. After the tenth century, we see a movement and a tendency to introduce Western humanism into Byzantium. Indeed, in the final years of Byzantium, many were tested by this effort, and the learned men of Byzantium had already divided into separate camps.

Some accepted the Orthodox faith and position, from which flowed what we might call true humanism—that is, a proper Christian understanding of the human person. Others accepted those novel fruits coming from the West as supposed lights, though these naturally began not from faith but from philosophy or rationalism. I will mention only one landmark figure in this struggle: Nicholas Cabasilas. Nicholas Cabasilas of Thessalonica, a great theologian, fought intensely against Western humanism, which was already entering the East.

His works, such as some of his homilies on the Theotokos or The Life in Christ, are nothing other than a response to it. But someone reading them may not know why Cabasilas wrote them. He wrote them precisely to check the advance of this Western humanism. I emphasize this: this Western humanism. Then Constantinople fell, and this incursion of Western humanism was halted. Greeks went abroad, however, and there they were inoculated with this Western humanism. But our people, precisely because of the very long Turkish occupation of Greece, were spared it.

They were spared this rationalistic, philosophical humanism. They escaped it! It is just like ancient buildings, which remain preserved as long as they stay buried and undiscovered. The moment we excavate them and bring them to the surface, they are endangered by antiquities thieves or by decay. As long as they remain buried, they are protected. The archaeological authorities know this as well. That is why they do not excavate when they know something lies in a particular place: they wish to protect those structures from antiquities thieves and decay, especially from antiquities thieves. When our homeland was liberated—and of course it was liberated by the local people, by the fighters who lived here—then there came...

Greeks from abroad, now educated but also inoculated with Western humanism, seeking to displace Orthodoxy and our Church and introduce that Western humanism. Take note: this is the sin. This is the sin—the terrible sin, the greatest of all sins.

A great many efforts were made. I remind you that, in the newly established Greek state, there was Flamiatos. I remind you...

You have come.

I remind you of Papoulakos. Read about these figures, so that you may understand what happened here in Greece at that time. In reality, it was...

Thank you. But as I told you, this sin is nothing other than apostasy; it constitutes apostasy from God. And one can see that, as the decades passed, the situation grew steadily worse. What did this spirit not infect? It even infected our Theological School of Athens, which trained theologians who later became bishops. Bear in mind that, in order to become a bishop, a man had to be a theologian.

And to become a theologian, he had to pass through the University of Athens. But in passing through the University of Athens, he also absorbed the fruits of the West. Thus, through her bishops, our Church gradually began to lose her Orthodox mind, because the professors who taught there—very often, though there were exceptions—did not possess an Orthodox mind. This undoubtedly had a profound effect on the ecclesiastical life of our country. Even when we entered the European Economic Community, this process, this sin, continued. For this was the purpose behind entering the EEC: whatever remained of our people’s Orthodox outlook was to be pushed aside and cast out.

In reality, then, those who governed us during the past hundred and sixty years or so, with some exceptions, I repeat, all aimed—whether to a greater or lesser degree, consciously or unconsciously, for political expediency or otherwise—to banish the Orthodox faith from our people and introduce rationalistic, Western-style humanism. And today, in our own time, we see this advancing at a gallop. Why do I say it is galloping today? Simply because the course of this condition follows not an arithmetic curve, but a geometric, exponential curve.

In this sense, it was natural for the people to offer strong resistance at first. Now that resistance grows weaker and weaker. As this spirit continually seeks to impose itself, the people either no longer understand what is happening or have even come to like it. They accept the rationalistic, humanistic spirit of the West and cast away their ancestral inheritance. This is the great and foremost sin of our people. All the other sins are consequences of this spirit—all of them. This helps you understand what it means for a people as a whole to sin.

Saint Cyril now says here: “Do you see? The grace of God can...”

“God’s grace can save a people when they repent of their sins.” Of course, I do not know whether our people are capable of repentance at this time; I do not know. So far, they have shown no sign of repenting. On the contrary, they are striving with all their might to emphasize more and more their apostasy from God, in every possible way. Yet there is a parallel here with the ancient people of Israel, who made the golden calf, as Saint Cyril mentions. What happened? My dear friends, Moses went up Mount Sinai for forty days to receive the commandments at God’s command. Forty days, no more. And the days passed.

The people began to worry: What had become of Moses? Then they said, “Ah, Moses must be lost. He went up there on the mountain—what could have happened to him?” But wait a moment. Had they not seen the mountain ablaze without being consumed? Had they not seen the cloud and thick darkness upon the summit? Had they not heard the voice of God like mighty trumpets, so that fear and trembling seized them? They forgot it all. They forgot it. In forty days—less than forty days, my dear friends—they forgot. How is that possible? When we read the history of the Hebrews, we say, “How is that possible?” I used to say the same thing. But it is possible for any people. We too forget in just the same way.

We forget the miracles of God and the presence of God. And what was the result? They seized Aaron and told him, “You will make us a calf, in imitation of Egyptian worship, and we will worship it. From now on, this will be our god.” Forgive me for speaking so bluntly, but this was utterly wrong. Later, when Aaron saw how angry Moses was, he defended himself like this: “You know,” he said, “the violent impulse of this people. They wanted to kill me. When I refused, they wanted to kill me. So, rather than let them kill me, I told them, ‘Gather all the gold objects you have and bring them here. I will put them into the furnace and make you a calf’”

“‘for you to worship. That is what I did.’” Poor Aaron was trembling as he said this to Moses, who was angry—and entirely justified in his anger. After they had made the calf, they set it up in a prominent place in their camp and began to celebrate and worship with debauchery. They had brought these things with them from Egypt, where the worship of idols was accompanied by orgies, including sexual orgies. Here in Greece as well, the worship of Bacchus, of Dionysus, and of Aphrodite consisted, we might say, of orgiastic cults. Then Moses came down and saw the people sinning. In what way? By making the calf and falling into apostasy. Then, my dear friends, he hurled the tablets to the ground, shattered them, and said:

“A people who can fall into idolatry so easily are not worthy to receive tablets engraved by God, upon which the law of God is written.” Then bloodshed broke out in the camp, and Aaron trembled before the wrath of Moses, and so forth. Yet the people repented, and when they repented, God forgave them. This is truly remarkable. Indeed, the whole history of Israel is nothing other than apostasy, punishment, repentance, and justification; then once again apostasy, punishment, repentance, and justification. Throughout their history, the Israelites repeatedly passed through these cycles in their relationship with God. Listen to this short phrase.

“Men denied God, but God did not deny Himself. ‘These are your gods, O Israel,’ they said”—meaning the golden calf—“and once again the God of Israel, as always, became their Savior.” Once again God became their God and their Savior, as He had always been. He punished them, yet He also forgave them again, because the people repented. And God forgave not only the people, but also Aaron, the high priest who had sinned, because Moses prayed for Aaron and God forgave him. You see, then, that God forgives a people who have sinned. My dear friends,

as I have told you before, we are a typological people—or rather, we are very close to the typological people of Israel. In a certain sense, we too are a typological people, because we were among the first to receive the Gospel, because we are Orthodox, and because we united the faith with our national life. We are, so to speak, a faithful antitype corresponding to the prototype, the people of Israel. Well then, perhaps the same applies to punishment as well. May God not punish us. I have told you what our sin is. I have told you plainly. Do you now see what it is? We are denying the Church. In recent years—systematically, for the last ten or twenty years, I do not know exactly—one can see a deliberate effort to attack the Church.

Do you believe, my dear friends, that it is by chance that bishops are appointed who betray the faith and the Church? I would tell you that it is not by chance. Behind the scenes, these dark powers promote even Patriarchs, in order to drive out the Church of Christ and capture her from within. Yes, yes. I am saying nothing new or unprecedented. You will have read something about this and know at least a little. They promote men to high offices in the priesthood when they know that the dark powers will be able to impose their will upon them, so that ultimately they may attack the Church. Freemasonry has worked terribly hard in this area—terribly hard. And what do you say when, at the same time, they attempt to attack every ecclesiastical institution? Lately they have begun to attack the monasteries. Of course, this is nothing new. The first attack on the monasteries took place in 1833. It is not a new phenomenon. At that time monasteries were dissolved, plundered on an unprecedented scale, and monks and nuns were driven out as never before. It was a blow against the monasteries only about ten years after the liberation of our homeland, even though the monasteries had contributed immensely to its freedom.

Since then, at various times, the struggle against the institution of monasticism has been relentless. Very recently, in fact, it appears that they have resolved to make a decisive effort and finish the matter once and for all.

The reason is simple: the monasteries offer resistance. I would say they offer both positive and negative resistance, but let us speak only of negative resistance—that is, they act as breakwaters against the currents that come upon us, wherever those currents may come from. And so they say, “This cannot continue. The monasteries must be removed. They must be swept aside; they must no longer exist.” They slander them in every possible way. Recently, children in many primary and secondary schools were asked, “What do you think about monasteries? Are they necessary?” And the children answered with one voice, “We do not need monasteries.” This is preparation for uprooting the monastic institution. Now they try to throw dust in people’s eyes by claiming, “We are not attacking the Church; the institution of monasticism has nothing to do with the Church.” How absurd! Only people with no theology could say that monasteries and monasticism have nothing to do with the Church. The roots of monasticism are found in Holy Scripture. That is where its roots lie. The Lord Himself remained in the wilderness for forty days, and John the Baptist himself—the greatest among those born of women—lived as an ascetic in the wilderness from infancy, and no one ever attained the measure of his ascesis, his ascetic discipline.

Holy Scripture itself describes him in these words: “He wore only a garment of hair, ate only locusts and wild honey, wore a leather belt, and lived a life of the strictest ascesis.” These are precisely the things we find in monasticism. And shall we say that monasticism is foreign to the Church? All these things are an assault upon the Church, upon what we might call the Church’s last strongholds, so that this Western-style rationalistic humanism of which I spoke may prevail. What I am telling you is neither new nor unknown. People worked for decades to bring these things about, and now they are happening.

They are now coming to completion! I call you to watchfulness. This has just come to mind, although I had intended to mention it during the questions. Listen, and you will understand the situation. I am sorry to say it, but what else can we do? The newspaper Apogevmatini, on April 13, 1983, published the following: In a circular sent to the churches of his diocese, Metropolitan Damaskinos of Phthiotis announced that, by a decision of the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece...

—of Greece, forgive me—Athanasia Samari, known as “Saint Athanasia of Krikello,” had been restored to ecclesiastical communion and would be admitted, like every Orthodox Christian, to the Mysteries of the Church. What would you say to that? What would you say to that, when they...

A demon-possessed woman, and so on and so forth—I will say no more. And yet a circular is issued restoring her. I have only this to tell you: these are the results of everything I have described. They attacked the Church from within. At various times, they placed people in positions of authority over the Church who had no true relationship with the Church. My dear friends, I would tell you this: at this moment, let the people see to their own shepherding, because we are not capable of shepherding you. I am sorry to say it. Take care to be saved. Take care to be saved. All these things are the fruits of this great sin. How strongly I have emphasized it!

Let us repent, then, as ancient Israel repented. Let us repent, so that destruction may not truly come upon us. God threatened them—and let me mention one of His warnings—with many things. But the two principal threats were the shifting of their boundaries—I mean their territorial boundaries—and captivity. Moses himself prophesied concerning captivity and even said, “You will be taken captive from the north.” Then the Ninevites came—first the Assyrians—and carried away the Northern Kingdom. Later the Babylonians came, and Nebuchadnezzar carried away the Southern Kingdom. Their borders also began to shrink. You see...

Israel’s borders were at their greatest in the days of David and Solomon. That was Israel’s golden age. But Solomon sinned, and God said to him, “I will not punish you, for the sake of your father, but I will certainly punish your descendants.” His son immediately lost the north—or rather, he lost Samaria in the north—and it became a separate kingdom. The people were divided into two kingdoms, and from that point their territory continued to shrink. God may therefore permit our own homeland to grow smaller and for us to lose territory as well—and may God stretch out His hand to prevent it. Yet if this happens, it will be because of our sins. You should know this, because there is a historical precedent.

This interpretation is set down in Holy Scripture, because we do not interpret history philosophically; we have a revealed interpretation of history. There God Himself explains: “I will reduce your borders because you rebel against Me.” This conclusion does not come from philosophical criticism, philosophical research, or philosophical speculation about why and how things happen. No, no. God Himself reveals it. Therefore, let us take heed. When our own territory shrank and Constantinople was reduced to a single city—all that remained of the once-great Byzantine Empire—the reason was the same. You may tell me that empires and nations grow very great at one point, then begin to decline, and eventually disappear, and that this is a law of history.

There are no laws of history. If we wish to view history philosophically, then of course we will imagine that we see such laws. But God governs history. Whether a people is Christian or non-Christian, whether it stands rightly or wrongly, God causes it to increase or diminish. Tell me, please, what did God say about the Babylonians? “I will wipe them from the map and from history.” And they disappeared. What else did God say? He said that the Persians would punish the Babylonians—forgive me, the Persians would punish the Babylonians—and that the Greeks would punish the Persians. And these things happened. They were foretold before they occurred, in those famous prophecies of Daniel that spoke of the Greeks. But the Greeks too, he says, would be punished, and then the Romans came.

Yes, the Greeks were idolaters, were they not? They were idolaters. They could worship Athena and Artemis if they wished; they were pagans, as I have said. But when you go beyond nature itself, worshiping Aphrodite and Bacchus and committing sins against nature—the Greeks themselves committing sins against nature—then God will punish you, because you have transgressed the law written in the conscience. You have violated nature itself. That is why God punished them. God, then, punishes nations; there are no laws of history that judge events. No, there are no such laws. God governs the nations: He raises them up or punishes them.

“Repent, O man, and grace will not be withheld from you.” You too, then, repent, O man, and God’s grace will not be withheld from you. “From this time forward, present yourself blameless in your conduct.” Now that you have heard what I have told you—and of course this is not the first time I have said these things—tell me, how do you feel? Are you indignant within yourselves? Do you feel pain? Then listen to me. Listen: if there are some of us here, a certain number—and not a small number, including men and young people, or rather, mostly young people—then hear this: we have a way to save the situation. If we repent personally... You may say, “But a moment ago you told us that it is not individuals who are sinning here, but an entire people.”

In Sodom too, an entire people had sinned; yet in the end, God agreed that if even ten righteous people remained, He would not destroy the whole people. This too is recorded in Holy Scripture. We have divine revelation; we have the certainty that revelation gives us. This conclusion is not something we have invented; it comes from revelation. This means that if, in every Greek city and every Greek village, there are a few people who live a life of metanoia—of repentance—and grieve over the present condition, over the de-Christianization of our people... For what have I just said? At first I spoke about Orthodoxy. But we are in danger of losing not only our Orthodoxy...

but even our Christian identity. Then God may forgive our people, bear with our people, and refrain from punishing us for the sake of those who have repented. Therefore, if we love our people and our homeland, we have a duty not to sin, but to live in repentance. If you were to ask me what the highest form of patriotism is that a citizen can offer his homeland, I would tell you: this is it—not to sin himself, and to help his homeland by every means to rise spiritually. I do not say this with pride; I give glory to God. God has helped me.

I held the very conviction I am expressing to you now even when I was a soldier. It was exactly the same. I have neither taken anything away from it nor added anything to what I am telling you. Even then, I used to tell my fellow soldiers that the Christian is the best and highest example of one who carries true patriotism within himself: the person who lives a genuinely Christian life, even one who lives in chastity, if you will. Not those who run after women and go to nightclubs, dances, and parties. They do not love their homeland, because they actively and passively contribute to its destruction. This is not only because they transgress God’s commandments and bring His punishment upon themselves, but also because, as members of their nation, they become incapable of keeping their homeland standing. They are inwardly corrupt people.

They are not even able to work. So you see who the true patriot is and who truly loves his homeland: the person who lives as God desires and takes every care not to sin, but to remain in repentance. Therefore, my beloved, let us repent, and be certain of this: if God so judges, He will not punish our homeland when He sees the repentance of even these few faithful people.

The hour has passed, and I had many things to tell you. I do not know how the time went by. The clock must have been running fast—or perhaps it ran especially fast today. My beloved, we shall conclude here, because only two minutes remain before we must finish. I would like to tell you that with today’s subject we are bringing the whole year to a close. We shall not continue after Pascha. I can see that this saddens you, but never mind. After Pascha, we shall continue only with the Sunday talks. I must commend you—and this praise belongs to you in the Lord—because from our first gathering to our last, we have held twenty-two talks.

That is no small number, and for it we must give glory to God. Your attendance has remained the same; the number has not diminished. This brings glory to God and is worthy of praise on your part. I commend you with all my heart, and I pray that God will help everything you have heard here, in this place, to bear abundant fruit within your hearts. May God bless you.

μετανοησάντων ανθρώπων και δικαιωθέντων από τον Θεό. Είμεθα εις την ενάτην παράγραφο. Το έντυπο που κρατάτε στα χέρια σας είναι από τη δεκάτη παράγραφο. «Έλθωμεν λοιπόν και επί τους άλλους τους εκ μετανοίας σωθέντας. Αλλ’ ίσως και εν γυναιξίν ερεί τις· επόρνευσα, εμοίχευσα, εμόλυνα το σώμα παντοίαις ακολασίαις· άρα έστι σωτηρία;» Αλλά αυτό λέγει τώρα και στην περίπτωση των γυναικών. Θα μπορούσε να πει μια γυναίκα: «Επόρνευσα, εμοίχευσα, εμόλυνα το σώμα μου με κάθε μορφής ακολασία, εν παντοίαις ακολασίαις. Σε μένα υπάρχει σωτηρία;» Θα μπορούσε να ρωτήσει μια γυναίκα. Τι λέγει τώρα ο Άγιος Κύριλλος;

«“Μνησθήσομαι Ραάβ και Βαβυλώνος”, αλλά μετά του “τοις γινώσκουσί με”. Έστιν ουν και επί ανδρών σωτηρία και επί γυναικών ομοίως η διά μετανοίας προξενουμένη». Σας διάβασα ολόκληρη την παράγραφο για να έχω μια ελευθερία κινήσεως στην ανάπτυξη του θέματος, για να κάνω μια λεπτομερέστερη ανάλυση ιστορική, για να καταλάβουμε μερικά πράγματα. Βέβαια, μια γυναίκα θα μπορούσε να πει: «Έκανα πολλές αμαρτίες· θα συγχωρεθώ εγώ;» Ε, έλα να σου δείξω τη ζωή μιας πόρνης γυναίκας, λέει ο Άγιος Κύριλλος, και να πάρεις παράδειγμα από εκεί. Και φέρνει ως παράδειγμα τη Ραάβ. Ή Ραχάβ, είναι το ίδιο όνομα. Ποια ήταν αυτή η διαβόητος και ταυτοχρόνως η διάσημος Ραάβ;
