Summary

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem teaches that evil has no independent substance or external source but grows through the misuse of human free choice. Remembering divine judgment restrains fornication, adultery, murder, theft, and other sins, while deeper spiritual maturity recognizes that sinful objects are not worth desiring. The lecture applies this warning to declining respect for family, teachers, clergy, the Gospel, and social authority, presenting remembrance of God as the remedy for moral disorder.

We are in the second catechetical lecture of Saint Cyril of Jerusalem, at the second paragraph.

But someone may ask, “What, then, is sin? Is it a living being? Is it an angel? Is it a demon? What is this thing that acts within us?” It is not an enemy outside you, O man, fighting against you, but an evil shoot that springs from you and grows by your own free choice. Look rightly with your eyes, and desire will not arise. Do not seize what belongs to others, and theft lies dormant. Remember the Judgment, and neither fornication, nor adultery, nor murder, nor any other lawless deed will prevail over you. But when you forget God, then you begin to entertain evil thoughts and finally to commit lawless deeds.

This is a most beautiful paragraph, my dear ones. Let us give it our attention. As you will remember, last time we spoke about sin and evil: what evil is, and how evil exists only in our free choice. Here Saint Cyril broadens the discussion once again in order to address the subject of evil, and he insists strongly upon this point. He may return to it again, because in his time the question of evil was fiercely disputed in philosophy and had given rise, as you know, to dualism. The attempt to explain evil in the world produced...

philosophical systems built upon this dualism. All the philosophical systems of antiquity—and unfortunately no fewer of the more recent systems, though especially those of antiquity—are dualistic. All of them arose from man’s attempt to explain the presence of evil. What is evil, and why does evil exist? What is this evil? Is it an essence? Is it not an essence? Is it something alive? Is it not alive? And so forth. The Church was being affected by Gnosticism, because many Christians were being led astray and becoming Gnostics—that is, they were coming to believe in dualism—

and for this reason Saint Cyril insists so strongly here upon the question of evil’s presence. But do not imagine that this question belongs only to the past. It belongs to the present as well, and it will belong to every present age. I shall show you at once how dualism appears—that is, how people understand the presence of evil.

When we explain the presence of evil, we immediately tend to give a dualistic explanation. We ordinary people—pay attention here—ordinary people, and sometimes people with no education at all, encounter these ideas too. Whatever philosophy may teach eventually makes its way down among the people, where we find it expressed in popular forms. For example, when people regard...

Marriage as Unclean

when they regard the body as unclean and evil, as something opposed to the soul and the spirit, and therefore despise it; or when the ascesis they impose upon it is not truly ascesis. A little earlier, while answering questions, were we not speaking about bodily toil, exhaustion, the humbling of the body, and so forth? Here I must point out the difference between Christianity and the other religions—the pagan, worldly religions. Christian ascesis, or ascetic discipline, is never regarded as the killing of the body, but as the killing of the passions.

The Christian never wishes to kill the body. Other religions and philosophical systems regard the body as the source of evil. A person may say, for example, “The body is the source of evil. Ah, this stomach, always demanding what it demands! Ah, these sexual urges and what they demand! What am I asking for? What am I asking for! I know I must struggle, but I cannot; the flesh brings me down. The flesh, then, is an evil thing.” My brother, neither your stomach nor your sexual organs are at fault. None of these things is at fault, as we shall see. The evil lies elsewhere. The flesh itself is not to blame.

And so... precisely because this dualistic position exists...

people seek to kill their bodies, to torment them, and to constrain them. But that is not where the matter lies. Ascesis does not kill the body; it kills the passions. The body is a temple of God, as we shall see later—not today, perhaps next year, when we reach the fourth catechetical lecture, for example, where Saint Cyril speaks briefly about the body. He will return to the subject again later. The body is one of God’s wondrous creations. “What is this body,” he asks, “which so many people condemn? Does it lack anything?” This body, this creation of God, is a masterpiece. It is a temple of God, and the Apostle Paul will tell us that the body has become a member of Christ’s body.

The soul wanders and passes from body to body; they believed that it sought eventually to be set free and perfected through its prisons, through the various incarnations it would undergo in these successive embodiments, as we might call them. No, no—none of this. None of it. Matter is not evil. Evil does not reside in matter, nor does evil possess an essence.

I spoke to you about this last time, so I shall not repeat the beautiful teaching of Saint Diadochos of Photike. But Saint Cyril asks the question here and returns to it because the matter weighs heavily upon him and must be made clear. His catechumens must understand the meaning of evil very well indeed. He says: “Someone may ask, ‘What is sin? Is it something alive? Is it a living being? Is it perhaps an angel? Is it perhaps a demon? What is this thing that produces sin and evil within us? What is it that acts?’” And he answers: “It is not an enemy outside you, O man, fighting against you.” Evil is not an enemy that comes from outside...

to fight against you, “but an evil shoot that springs from you and grows by your own free choice.” Evil lies in your free choice; that is where it takes root and grows. Always remember: evil is not an essence. Evil belongs to free choice. It lies in my choosing between good and evil. If, in the act of choosing, I accept evil and then carry it out, evil still has no essence; rather, it is the manifestation of my own free choice. Free choice, we might say, is a faculty within man, and it acts now in one way and now in another. Evil, therefore, has no essence. Saint Cyril now offers some wonderfully practical counsel, because his pastoral concern is to help his catechumens—those preparing for illumination—to live the spiritual life. Listen to these beautiful words: “Look rightly with your eyes, and desire will not arise.” Look rightly with your eyes, and be assured that no sinful desire, no evil, will arise. If you permit me, these words deserve to be written on a little sign and looked at often. Yet allow me to add that, for a person to attain this, he must struggle throughout his entire life.

“Look rightly with your eyes,” he says, “and then desire will not arise.” If you ask me what “rightly” means, that is the crucial question: what does it mean to see rightly? The Lord was once asked when the Kingdom of God would come—the Kingdom of God within man, of course. For the Lord said that it does not come “with observation,” and that “the Kingdom of God is within you.” In his two epistles to the Corinthians, Saint Clement of Rome preserves some of the Lord’s unwritten sayings, which were handed down orally and, of course, are not recorded in Holy Scripture. In answer to the question of when the Kingdom of God would come, the Lord said:

A man looks at a woman, but not as a woman—simply as a human being. And a woman looks at a man, not as a man, but simply as a human being. What does this mean? Such a person sees rightly. He does not look at the other in terms of sex; he does not see the opposite sex, but the other human being. Then there is no possibility of desire developing. Each sees in the other simply another human being. Holy Scripture says that Adam and Eve were naked in Paradise. As I told you last night, giving a certain theological interpretation of the matter, they were not truly naked, but were clothed in the divinely woven glory of God...

in a divinely woven fabric, a divinely woven garment of divine glory. Scripture says that they were naked and were not ashamed. Do you know why? Because there was simplicity—divine simplicity. Even today, however, corrupt people appeal to simplicity. Someone presents himself to you shamelessly, and when you ask, “Why are you doing this?” he replies, “You are prudish; I am simply natural.” Forgive me, but what does it mean to say, “You are prudish; I am simply natural”? People invoke simplicity so casually. Simplicity is not merely a virtue; it is the culmination of all the virtues when they have reached their highest form. That is simplicity, and for this reason it is called holy simplicity. Have you really reached the summit of the virtues, so that you can claim to live in simplicity while presenting yourself shamelessly, provoking others and allowing yourself to be provoked? No, that is not simplicity. What, then, is simplicity? I have told you already, but let me express it in another way. As Saint Isaac the Syrian says, it means seeing the things of this world, or its forms—he literally says “the forms”—as they truly are. Listen: as they truly are. That is simplicity. Thank you.

Suppose there is an image of the sort people draw on walls—an obscene image. You understand what I mean: the so-called phallic images written or drawn in lavatories, here and there on walls, at school, in public toilets, and so forth. They are called phallic because they depict the phallus. Where does our mind go when we see them? It goes in that direction, and we are tempted. Can you look at such an image without being tempted? Can it mean nothing to you? If a very small child—take a two-year-old—sees naked people, will the child think anything of it? Absolutely nothing. That is simplicity. Simplicity means seeing something without your mind moving on to something else beyond it...

without altering what you see. That is called simplicity. Yet it is terribly difficult. My dear ones, man after the Fall cannot attain it easily. He struggles—he struggles tremendously—and perhaps great ascetics have reached a certain holy simplicity, though even there, we might say, within certain limits. So, can you look at a man or a woman, respectively, without seeing the man merely as male in relation to the woman, or the woman merely as female in relation to the man? Can you attain this? Then the Kingdom of God has come within you. It means seeing with simplicity and regarding the other as a brother or a sister. If you like, this is how it will be in the Kingdom of God. And if you like...

if we have not attained this in the present life, do not be alarmed—please, do not be alarmed. Neither will we be able to attain it there, because we will be unfit to enter the Kingdom of God. At death, our virtue becomes fixed as the spiritual condition we possessed here on earth. If we depart in chastity, if we depart in a state of struggling toward apatheia—take care: not having attained apatheia, or freedom from the passions, but struggling toward it—then we can enter the Kingdom of God, because we will possess the fitness to enter. Otherwise, we will not be fit to enter the Kingdom of God. This, then, is what the words “Look rightly with your eyes” mean: look rightly with your eyes, and then...

you will have nothing to desire. Let me give you another example. Why have I spoken only about matters of the flesh? Let us take another example. You go into a bank and watch people carrying out their transactions. There are even people with stacks of thousand-drachma notes, arranging and counting them. I do not know exactly how they handle them. We look at those thousands...

with apatheia, with freedom from the passions. In other words, you say, “What are thousand-drachma notes? They are pieces of printed paper.” You may say to me, “But they are backed by gold.” And what is gold? A yellow metal, while the metal of my cooking pots is white because it is called aluminum. That is all.

This, then, is what it means to see correctly. It is merely matter, nothing more. It serves a purpose. Just as my aluminum pot serves me for cooking my food, so, if I had gold, it would serve me for buying things at the market. That is its only use, nothing more. Can I look at money in this way? Because how would I look at it otherwise? With the worshipful devotion of a miser, of someone who loves money: money, money, money. If I see it that way, then I am not seeing correctly. That is why I must penetrate more deeply into the true nature of created things.

Great saints and philosophers, by penetrating into the true nature of created things, were able to value them properly. Consider Diogenes. You see, I am not using a Christian ascetic as my example, but a pagan, to help you understand that this is not simply a matter of Christ making me see things in this way. Even if my nous, my spiritual intellect, possesses only a little purity, I will see them clearly. If I can see them this way simply because I am a philosopher, how much more should I do so as a Christian? So, when Alexander came to Diogenes, he said to him—you all know this story—“I have heard that you are a great man, but I see you living here in great poverty. Shall I give you some money? You are a renowned philosopher, after all. What can I give you? What can I give you?” And Diogenes said to Alexander, when Alexander had conquered Athens:

“What I ask of you, you cannot give me.” “What is it?” “Move aside and give me the sunlight, because you are blocking it.” Alexander’s shadow had fallen over him and was hiding the sun. Diogenes wanted nothing but the sunlight; he wanted nothing else. He had assessed things rightly. He saw that material things had no real worth or importance—none at all. This is what it means to see correctly.

My beloved, if I see material things correctly, then tell me: is it difficult to keep the commandment, “You shall not covet anything that belongs to your neighbor”? There is no difficulty at all. Why should I desire the things that belong to my neighbor? They are nothing. Someone else has a beautiful garden filled with fragrant flowers. I sit outside and look at them. It is as though that garden were my own estate.

It is enough for me simply to see the flowers. In fact, I pay neither a gardener nor taxes; I merely enjoy the sight of them. Is that not enough for me? I see the parks, the sun, the mountains, and the snow when it falls—and how beautiful the snow is. I see the rain, which has its own beauty. I see the wind, which also has its beauty. I see the thunderbolts and flashes of lightning crossing the sky; they too have their beauty. The thunder also has its beauty. Everything has its own beauty. I can delight in all of it, because I see everything simply, as it truly is. Keep your eyes rightly directed, then. Saint Cyril says here, “See correctly,” and then no desire will arise within you. He explains this further, saying, “Do not seize what belongs to others.” Do not take another person’s possessions. Why should you seize them? “And the impulse to steal falls asleep”—it lies dormant.

If, he says, you do not seize what belongs to others, then the impulse to steal remains asleep and inactive, since you are not taking what belongs to others. But pay attention: at this point he remains within the Old Law, whereas in the first saying he goes on to the New Testament. What does this mean? It is not enough merely to refrain from taking what belongs to others; I must also see that those things have no true worth. They have no true worth, so why should I seize them? That is the reasoning. “Remember the judgment.” Oh, what a beautiful saying! Remember that there will be a judgment, “and neither fornication, nor adultery, nor murder, nor any other lawless act will prevail over you.” Remember that you will be judged, and then none of these sins will overcome you. God will judge me. This is what the Old Testament also says:

“Remember your Last Things,” remember that you will die, and you will never sin. Yet what is said here has only a negative character. It is negative in the sense that I refrain because I am afraid: “God will judge me.” That is not enough. We must also pass to the positive side: the thing itself is not worth desiring. Listen to me: whatever it may be, it is simply not worth my desire. Do you see a beautiful person? That person is beautiful; let him rejoice in his beauty. You can say simply—very simply indeed—“What beautiful people God creates!” Nothing more. Do not desire to sin with that person. Nothing more. It is very simple. Saint Basil the Great says, “Do you wish to see? Does a beautiful face stir temptation within you?”

Go very close and see the pores and the hairs. When you see them—as we used to say in our day—take a magnifying glass and examine the skin. Then you will say, “Is this what I fell in love with? Is this what I loved? Is this what stirred such an ugly feeling within me? This?” This is why I told you that we must penetrate deeply into the nature of created things. We must interpret them rightly, become conscious of what they are, and understand them. Then, my beloved, there will truly be no need to force ourselves. We will have understood that this is how we ought to conduct ourselves. And now pay attention to something very important, so that you may understand why crime exists today, and why it is continually increasing.

Someone said today, “Nowadays a man will kill you for twenty thousand drachmas.” I said nothing to him; he was a taxi driver. I wanted to tell him: not merely for twenty thousand drachmas, but for a simple misunderstanding. My brothers told me that a young man we know went to park his car somewhere—he is presently serving as a soldier. This happened just recently, within the last few days. He wanted to park, and another man wanted to park his own car in the same place, so they began arguing. “I arrived first.” “No, I arrived first to park here.” The other man pulled out a pocketknife and ruptured his spleen, and I do not know what else may have happened to him afterward. So it was not for twenty thousand drachmas, but for a trivial misunderstanding—a trivial, senseless misunderstanding. Human life has become so cheap.

It has fallen terribly in value, as though it were nothing. Human life means nothing anymore. And so you see people killing, murdering, robbing, and stealing in every possible way. You see them using drugs and engaging in all manner of schemes, perversions, lawlessness, filth, condemnation of others—anything you can imagine. Anything at all. And this is an offspring of the West.

Dostoevsky already describes an anarchist in one of his novels. Do you hear? He describes an anarchist with whom a dialogue takes place. I once read an excerpt, though I do not remember which of his books it came from. I have not read Dostoevsky’s works; I merely read in a magazine an excerpt containing this dialogue with an anarchist, and it dates from the previous century. Anarchism, then, was a phenomenon of the West, an offspring of the West. This is where rationalism led Europe: to anarchism. And what does anarchism mean? It means rejecting every authority and setting up each individual as his own authority. I reject your authority, whatever it may be,

and I set up the idol of my own authority. This, as I told you, arose in the West. It began when Luther, the Protestant, set out to reject the standing and authority of the Western Church. The Western Church, and particularly the popes, had committed terrible abuses. Luther therefore challenged the authority of Rome, and as a result introduced a new spirit into Europe: the spirit of questioning and rejection. Little by little, my beloved, this spirit took flesh and form and led to anarchism. The phenomenon of anarchism is therefore not new at all. It has deep roots, and it is a dreadful phenomenon, because no one knows how to cure it.

Its cause is this. One verse from Saint Cyril explains it completely: “But when you forget God, then you begin to think evil things and to commit lawless deeds.” That is all. That is the whole matter. When you begin to forget God, you begin to think wickedly and to carry out lawless acts. Then everything becomes permissible, because once the authority of God is removed, I make my own authority supreme and acknowledge no one else. But by then I have already entered into anarchy. Do you want us to avoid falling into anarchism? For it is well known that we Greeks have also begun to fall into it. Do you want us to preserve whatever can still be preserved? Here is the remedy.

Do not forget God. In other words, recognize God as your authority, and then every good thing will be found within you. Have you forgotten God? Then you will fall into anarchy. And because in Greece today we are forgetting God,

my beloved, we are beginning, as I have explained, to remove God from the family. What result do you expect when we create a new kind of family? Pay attention to what I said: a new kind of family. Today I heard the expression—the gentleman who said it to me may be present; yes, he is here—“Down with family rule.” Yes, “Down with family rule,” they say, as though the family were a regime like a dictatorship or some kind of tyranny. So, down with it; let us abolish the family. When such slogans begin to appear, it means that the family no longer possesses authority.

It is well known that the father is no longer regarded as a figure of authority within the family. The son will say to his father, “You know nothing. Get out of the way. Who pays any attention to you?” Thus the father has no authority, and neither does the mother. And the poor schoolteacher—what the teacher has to endure in school today! Yet some bad teachers have helped create this situation. Sadly, they are not merely a few; there are quite a number of bad teachers who foster this situation within the school. They seek to create a rejection of authority. The schoolteacher, then, is no longer an authority. The secondary-school teachers—and what they too must endure—are no longer authorities in the school. Yet they have also contributed to the evil now taking place. The teachers too have helped bring about this evil, though not all of them.

The good teachers, who do not contribute to the evil, taste its consequences and suffer—truly, they suffer. Do you want more examples? Those who govern no longer possess authority either. And the efforts of those who labor today to destroy every authority turn back upon their own heads. The priest has no authority today; he is no longer regarded as an authority. The bishop and the Archbishop are no longer authorities. But now something else is being attempted. Christ is no longer an authority. Christ is no longer an authority. The Gospel is no longer an authority. We accept only a few little moral teachings from it, and even these with reservations—nothing more. It is not an authority. People say, “But how do I know that? How do I know whether it is true?”

The very fact that we say, “How do I know that?”—to use the popular expression of ordinary people—means that the Gospel too is no longer an authority today. In other words, God is no longer an authority. When we remove God from our lives, we make ourselves the sole authority. We imagine that whatever we ourselves say is authoritative, and then everything becomes permissible. Every evil is permitted, culminating in the greatest evil: anarchy. Do you imagine that, before very long, if we continue galloping toward evil at this rate—it is now half past nine—we will still be able to remain outdoors in the streets at this hour? Or will we be locking ourselves inside our homes from six o’clock onward?

There was a time when the Germans confined us to our homes from six o’clock, at sunset. Now we shall confine ourselves. It would be no surprise. In the great cities of America, people already shut themselves in their homes very early because they are afraid. And who knows what else we shall see, or where we shall end up? All this, my dear ones, shows that we truly have cast God out. Everything is permitted. I once told you a story about a French minister who went to the Pyrenees for his summer holiday. At the hotel where he was to stay, he called the innkeeper over so that he could pay in advance. He said, “I shall stay for ten days. How much do I owe you?” The innkeeper told him the amount, and he paid it. Then the innkeeper asked, “Minister, shall I give you a receipt?”

He replied, “There is no need, no need. God sees us.” The innkeeper asked, “Do you believe in God?” “Why, of course I believe in God,” said the minister. “But I do not believe in God,” said the innkeeper. “Then please send me a receipt.” For if you do not believe in God, what restraint is left for you in such a matter? If you neither fear nor believe in God, then there is no fear of God. And when there is no fear of God, every evil—fraud and everything else—becomes possible for you. As you have seen, my dear ones, this short second paragraph contained a good deal of spiritual nourishment and richness, which I very much hope will edify us. We now come to the third paragraph: “You are not the only originator of this matter...”

“There is also another, a most wicked instigator: the devil. He does indeed make suggestions, but he does not forcibly prevail over those who refuse to obey him. Therefore Ecclesiastes says, ‘If the spirit of the ruler rises against you, do not leave your place.’ If you shut your door and keep him far from you, he will not harm you. But if you carelessly welcome the recollection of desire, then through the logismoi, the intrusive thoughts, he plants roots within you, binds your understanding, and drags you down into a pit of evils.”

And so forth!

Here Saint Cyril wishes to show us, in a thoroughly Orthodox and most beautiful way, that the source of evil is always free choice, whether that free choice belongs to a human being, to an angel, or in general to any rational being. Since the angels are rational beings, they clearly possess free choice. Thus every free choice can become a source of either good or evil. And because the devil is a fallen angel—that is, a rational being—he is also free. For this reason, he too is a source of evil.

Evil. Thus we have two sources of evil: the human being and the devil. There is also a third source of evil, which is nothing other than, we might say, humanity in its collective form.

In essence, it is still the human being and the devil, but we commonly speak of three sources of evil. This third source, humanity in its collective form, is what we call the world. The world is also a source of evil. The world, however, consists of human beings considered collectively, as a mass, if you will. The world puts forward its evil free choice, and through the presence of evil it influences other people, those around it. Thus the world too is a source of evil. We might say, then, that there are three sources of evil: the human being himself, the devil, and the world. Saint Cyril says here that you are not the only originator of the matter we have been discussing—that is, of evil.

There is also another: the devil, who is a most wicked and terrible instigator. He too makes suggestions, but not by force; he acts only upon those who obey him. Here Saint Cyril uses a passage from Ecclesiastes as evidence. It is Ecclesiastes, chapter 10, verse 4: “If the spirit of the ruler rises against you, do not leave your place.” When he says, “If the spirit of the ruler rises against you,” he means the devil. In other words, if he comes to influence you, give him no place. Does this remind you of something in the New Testament, where the Apostle Paul says:

“Be angry,” but let your anger come to an end with the setting of the sun, so that you give no place to the devil. It is, we might say, the same manner of speaking: let us give no place to the devil. First, I must tell you that Saint Cyril writes much more about the devil further on, but we shall not discuss it today; we do not have time. Thank you. He says a great deal, including how evil began in the devil himself. In fact, this subject extends into the following paragraph. So do not think that we have said too little. We shall discuss only what is mentioned here in the third paragraph, and reserve the rest for another time. One important point is that the devil cannot impose himself by force; he can only persuade. In this...

We place our hope. The devil has no right to do this. To begin with, he is restrained by our very nature, because free choice is a formidable thing. Do you know how formidable free choice is? If you say no, and you mean it and believe it—even to martyrdom, even to the shedding of blood—you say no. That is the end of it. It is finished.

What more can be done beyond that? Nothing. No one can do anything. At that point you pass entirely into the power of God; you depart altogether from this present life. But the point is that the devil cannot compel you. At times the devil may cause certain forms of intimidation. He may create “force”—and I am placing the word “force” in quotation marks.

He may employ certain tricks, but in reality it is utterly impossible for him to impose himself by force.

He is not permitted to do so; it is utterly impossible. God does not permit it, and the very nature of free choice, as I told you, does not permit it either. I referred to this earlier. Force has no place there; it cannot be done. This, then, is what Saint Cyril says here: “He does indeed make suggestions, but he does not forcibly prevail over those who refuse to obey him.” If you are not persuaded by the devil, he can do absolutely nothing to you. Please hold fast to this; it is useful. Do you know how the devil begins? He comes and whispers an idea to you. He says, “Do this.” Or he brings an image before you, an image in your imagination. Then he tries to observe how you react to the image he has presented. How will you respond? And you know that even...

We human beings ourselves can judge another person’s reaction by presenting something to him. Let me present you with another image now. I can look at your faces and study how each person reacts to the image he sees, whether it is good, bad, repulsive—whatever it may be. A person always shows some reaction. It is utterly impossible to remain unaffected. So the devil watches how we react to the image he presents to us. Suppose it is an immoral image. He watches us. What did we do? Did we grimace? Did we show displeasure or pleasure? If he sees displeasure, and we turn our eyes elsewhere and withdraw them from the image he has presented, then the devil is left suspended, with nowhere to proceed. He may move the image and present it within another part of our field of vision, wherever we have turned our eyes—always noetically, of course, because this is taking place in the imagination.

We turn away from there as well and go elsewhere. We keep leaping from place to place. Do you know how a cat leaps from fence to fence when a dog is chasing it? It leaps from there to a tree, then to a fence, then to the roof tiles; it jumps from one place to another. In the same way, the imagination can keep leaping away.

The devil pursues us, trying to show us the image he desires. We do not want to see it. We saw it once, and we refuse to look at it any further. We resist. Then the devil can do nothing more. What else can he do? He sees that we have avoided it, and he gives up. He will return—it makes no difference—but at that moment he gives up. He departs because we gave him no place.

We left him no opening by which he might understand that he had a place to remain. But when we show pleasure in the image he has presented, he sees that we like it. Then he begins to colour it with his demonic paints and his demonic brush, using magnificent, paradisal, exotic colours. He sees that we are being drawn more and more toward the image he is painting for us. Then our thinking and our desire begin to be corrupted, and he observes the reactions even in our body. At that point he calls other demons as well, and then begin the...

Fiery darts, until we say, “I cannot bear it. I cannot resist. I cannot, I cannot bear it. I shall go and commit the sin.” My brother, the sin was not there by nature; it came afterward. What were we saying earlier? It is neither a living creature, nor an essence, nor an angel, nor anything else; it is not even a demon. The devil has evil in his free choice, as we shall see next time. Consequently, it came by way of suggestion. You did not drive it away at once, and it mastered you. That is all. Do not blame your nature, my brother, saying, “My nature is such that it cannot resist.” It is another matter if, through the repeated abuse of sin, you have made your nature prone to sin. That belongs to another paragraph. Thank you.

This tendency resembles the susceptibility of someone who has suffered an illness: he remains inclined toward that illness because he has already passed through it and still bears the weakness. What can we do? Yet we must not blame our nature. Our nature is not sinful. Many people say, “I was born this way.” No, my brother, you were not born this way. Others go even further and say, “God made me this way.” Would God make you this way and then demand an account of your sins? What would that make God? Is God self-contradictory? Is God unjust? No. You are responsible. The evil lies in your free choice. You were not watchful at the beginning; you accepted the devil’s suggestion, you were persuaded by what he presented to you, and now you rush forward...

Having given your consent, you draw the mistaken conclusion that your nature is to blame. Therefore—forgive me—“If you shut your door and keep him far from you, he will not harm you.” If you close your door and the devil remains at a distance, then he cannot harm you at all. What does it mean to close my door? Which door? How do I close it? The door of my house? My dear ones, there are times when we shall close the door of our house as well. If something is happening in the street or in our courtyard, we shall close the door of our house and the windows too. At times we shall even close our ears. We shall stop them for a while so that we do not hear something we ought not to hear. Above all, however, we must close the door of the soul. Listen to what is said at one point. It says...

Ezekiel or Jeremiah—I do not remember which—says, “Death has climbed in through the windows.” What are these windows? First, picture a building that is a tower. As you know, a tower has no windows low down, because windows there would make it vulnerable. So where would its windows be? Very high up. It would have little openings, small windows, at the very top, near the battlements. It is through these, Scripture says, that “death has climbed in.” The enemy climbs up a ladder, enters through those little windows, and gets inside. In the spiritual sense, these openings, these little windows, are our five senses.

This is how the Fathers of watchfulness understand and interpret it. These windows are our five senses, through which we communicate with the world outside us. Whatever comes into us from outside must pass through our hearing, sight, smell, taste, or touch. We must close these windows. We must close them. Have you realized that you are looking at something filthy in the street? Turn your eyes elsewhere. That means you have closed the little door of the sense of sight. Saint Nikodemos says in his book, the Handbook of Spiritual Counsel, that the eyes are great thieves. They stretch out hands, he says, and steal things that belong to others.

Unseen and unnoticed, they steal the beauty of others and covet their money; then, within the soul, these things become desire, envy, jealousy, and many other things. The eyes extend those enormous hands, seize things, and carry them into the soul. So close the little door. Do not sit among your companions listening to filthy jokes, obscene talk, and whatever else they call it. Do not allow your senses to make contact with anything that you know could harm you. My brother, do not get on the bus—especially a city bus—when you know it will be extremely crowded and that you may suffer harm there, because people will be pressed against you and you against them. I tell you these things because we hear of them and know that they happen. Do not get on the bus; walk instead! “But I am in a hurry!”

It is better to lose whatever it is you might lose than to lose your soul. Or leave on time—set out from home half an hour earlier and walk—if you know that you are in danger when you board the bus and people touch you or you touch them. This is what it means to close the little door of the sense of touch, and likewise with the other senses. Indeed, as Saint Nikodemos says, touch is the most troublesome of the senses, especially in matters of the flesh. But suppose the enemy unexpectedly leaps in through the little window. What does that mean? It means that, for a moment and against your will—you did not deliberately place yourself in such a situation—you saw something against your will or heard something against your will. Then listen to what Holy Scripture says.

“Guard your heart with every vigilance.” The phrase “with every vigilance” means with every kind of guarding—including guarding it through these windows. And why is it called death? I forgot to explain that. Because this is how death enters your life and your soul. When sin enters your soul through the senses, what is actually entering? Death is entering. For what is sin? It is death. Now, if something happens unexpectedly—for we are human—we cannot put on blinders, walk around without seeing, or put plugs in our ears. That is impossible. Nor can we block our nostrils so that we never smell something unpleasant or some fragrance that might provoke us. Sometimes people are tempted by a perfume. They smell a perfume and are troubled by it. Each person has an Achilles’ heel, a hidden gate through which the city of his soul may be captured.

We are watchful, but things do not always remain as calm as we would like. So the enemy has leapt in and entered. Ah, has the enemy entered in this way? Then this is the moment to obey the words, “Guard your heart with every vigilance.” Take care that this thing does not descend into your heart. Did you see something? Cast it out quickly. Do not let it take possession of your heart. That is all. The great battle will be fought there: do not let it descend into the heart; guard your heart. If the great struggle takes place there, as Saint Cyril says a little later, you will not need the fire brigade. I am adding the expression “fire brigade”; Saint Cyril speaks of fire, and I use the phrase to make his image more vivid. You will not need the fire brigade to extinguish your impulses.

You will need an axe, he says, a hatchet for cutting. But what will you cut? Which roots? Sin has already taken place there and has put down roots within you. Where are you running now? Where can you go now? Deal with it at the beginning—at the very beginning. Listen, my beloved: at the beginning we must make every effort to prevent even a single root from forming within the heart. “But if you carelessly receive the recollection of desire, it puts down roots within you through the logismoi, the intrusive thoughts; it binds your spiritual mind and drags you down into a pit of evils.” Here we see the self-confidence we sometimes have. If, he says, you accept it while telling yourself, “It does not matter; nothing will happen to me”—as some people say, “Nothing will happen to me”—then...

...if you receive the recollection of desire through the logismoi, the intrusive thoughts, roots begin to be planted. Tiny roots, little rootlets, enter within. And as he says shortly afterward, do not forget that roots can split even stones. Listen to his words: “But perhaps you say, ‘I am a believer.’” Ah, I am a believing person; nothing will happen to me. “And desire will not overcome me”; desire will not prevail within me. I am sound; I am strong. “Even if I think about these things frequently.” Do you not know that “a root, if it remains, can split even a stone”? Do you not know that a root can break a stone apart? My beloved, you have seen trees growing on mountain slopes.

There the roots pass through the rocks and split them apart. A root is a formidable thing; it has tremendous power. In the same way, if you allow roots to form within your soul, the evil that has taken root there will overthrow you. “Do not receive the seed, because it will tear your faith apart.” Do not receive the seed, because it will tear your faith apart. Do not read heretical books while saying, “I am strong.” Do not read the books of other religions while saying, “I am strong.” At some unguarded moment, these little roots will give rise to doubt. And doubt is the seed of the devil. “Before it blossoms, uproot the evil completely.” Before it blossoms, he says—before it takes root—cut it off! Cut off the evil!

“If you are careless at the beginning, later you will be busy looking for axes and fire.” Do not be lazy at the beginning and then go searching for fire—we said, the fire brigade—and an axe with which to cut the roots away. “Treat an eye infection promptly when it begins, lest you become blind and only then seek physicians.” So, when your eye first begins to hurt, go to the doctor; do not wait until you are blind and only then seek a doctor. As you understand, my beloved, we must cut evil off at the very beginning. The devil suggests it to us, but he has no power to establish it within us. Whether we ultimately accept it depends on us. Therefore, let us struggle never to accept the evil that Satan suggests to us.

Μόνο γιατί θα πούμε «και πού το ξέρω εγώ αυτό;» σημαίνει απορρίπτουμε —παίρνουμε τη λαϊκή έκφραση που τη λένε οι απλοί άνθρωποι— σημαίνει ότι και το Ευαγγέλιο σήμερα δεν είναι αυθεντία. Ο Θεός δηλαδή πια δεν είναι αυθεντία. Όταν βγάζουμε τον Θεό από τη ζωή μας, τότε σημαίνει ότι κάνουμε τον εαυτό μας αυθεντία μόνο. Εκείνο που εμείς λέμε το νομίζουμε ότι είναι αυθεντία, και τότε όλα πλέον επιτρέπονται, όλα τα κακά επιτρέπονται, και το αποκορύφωμα των κακών: η αναρχία. Έχετε την εντύπωση ότι ύστερα από λίγο καιρό, πολύ λίγο καιρό, όπως πάμε με τον καλπάζοντα αυτόν τρόπο προς το κακό, ότι θα μπορούσαμε —εννιάμισι η ώρα τώρα είναι— ότι θα μπορούσαμε να μένουμε τέτοια ώρα ακόμη έξω στον δρόμο; Ή θα κλεινόμαστε από τις 6 η ώρα στα σπίτια μας;
