Summary

Holy Confession is presented as a second baptism because it grants forgiveness for sins committed after Baptism, while Baptism also bestows adoption as children of God. Christians should attend catechesis consistently, read Holy Scripture, and remember spiritual teaching through repetition, written notes, and deliberate recollection. Believers should set aside worldly distractions and devote regular time—especially during the forty days of Great Lent—to prayer, Scripture, and care for the soul.

We have come, my beloved, to the first catechetical instruction for those preparing to be illumined. “The present time is the time for confession. Confess what you have done, whether in word or deed, by night or by day. Confess at the acceptable time and on the day of salvation. Receive the heavenly treasure of salvation.” Since we are at the beginning of the catechetical instructions, which lasted forty days—as is evident from what is called internal evidence, and indeed from this very first instruction—Holy Confession also had to take place during this period.

This passage speaks about the time for confession. We, of course, my beloved, have been baptized, and through Baptism every sin has been cast away: ancestral sin and every personal sin. After our Baptism, however—especially since we were baptized as infants—we have plainly sinned and continue to sin. Now suppose the love of God had given us Baptism but not the Mystery of Holy Confession. Would God then be loving and merciful toward mankind? Yet because He knows how readily human nature slips into sin—

God, in His love, has given us another Mystery as well: the Mystery of Holy Confession. Because through it we receive forgiveness of sins, just as we do in Baptism, it is also called a second Baptism. Naturally, it does not replace the first Baptism, because the first Baptism grants more than the forgiveness of sins. It also grants other gifts. Above all, it grants our adoption as children of God. In Baptism, to speak in human terms, an act of adoption takes place: God acknowledges us as His children. This is exceedingly important. Baptism, therefore, is not merely an act of forgiveness of sins, whereas Holy Confession is an act of forgiveness of sins.

Concerning the phrase, “the time for confession”—forgive me, that “the present time” is the time for confession—I should like to comment on the time rather than on the Mystery of Holy Confession itself. I will not comment on the Mystery here, because this whole passage is concerned primarily with the time for confession. When is that time? The time for confession is always. Indeed, Saint Cyril cites a passage from Holy Scripture, from 2 Corinthians 6:2: “In an acceptable time I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you.” And then: “Behold, now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation.” Now is the acceptable time. Now is the day of salvation. Do not put it off.

The time for confession, then, is always. Yet within that “always” there are particular moments of importance. For every person, the time for repentance and confession is always; but when someone receives a special call, through some opportunity given to him to repent, that is the acceptable time. Generally speaking, do you know what the acceptable time is? It is the time between Christ’s First Coming and His Second Coming. That is the acceptable time for repentance. Take note that after this period—after Christ’s Second Coming—there will no longer be any opportunity for repentance. The time for repentance and confession will have ended. For each person, however, the relevant period is his own lifetime—

the span between his birth and his death. More specifically still, there are the particular calls a person receives to repent and confess. How many people have repented and sought Holy Confession after reading a religious tract, hearing the word of God, or spending time with a spiritually minded person? Others, of course, do not wish to confess even when such opportunities are given to them. But what am I to say? That the grace of God did not come to them? I do not know. Or perhaps they themselves reject the grace of God for various reasons. But take note: when God calls in this particular way and a person refuses, there is a danger that he may eventually be shut out from repentance. It is terrifying.

We witness many such examples—very many. But what can one say when seeing a person who has never confessed in his entire life, never, never, never, yet was not deliberately calculating or putting it off? Shortly before he dies, an opportunity is given to him. He repents, is broken in spirit, and makes his confession. He is saved. Another person has never confessed in his life, but he has been deliberately putting it off. He keeps saying, “I have plenty of time. Why worry?” What happens then? Do you know what happens? Listen. When he finally decides that he wants to confess, he runs out of time. Before the priest can arrive, he dies. We have often wondered: why did God not keep that man alive for another fifteen minutes?

Just fifteen minutes, so that the priest could come and give him Holy Communion or hear his confession. I will answer you. God is loving and merciful, but the door has closed, and now God does not receive him. It is over. The acceptable time has ended. The man’s life had not yet ended, but his time had ended. You may say, “Did you not tell us earlier that the time extends from birth until death?” Yes, but after God had called him many times and the man remained unwilling, God in His knowledge judged that the door had already closed for that person. This should make us tremble. If matters were otherwise, Holy Scripture would not speak continually about an acceptable time. Indeed, listen to this twofold proclamation: “Behold, now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation.”

The word “behold,” repeated with both expressions—“the acceptable time” and “the day of salvation”—shows that there is a particular time. This is that particular time. If we do not make use of it, we lose our salvation. Let us pay close attention to this point, my beloved. How can I put it? I do not know quite how to say it. There may be earnest people who hear the word of God but do not decide to go to Holy Confession. They do not know why. They are ashamed. The devil creates such obstacles for them. He comes and says, “Wait a moment. You have committed so many sins. Are you not ashamed to go and tell someone all these things?” Please answer the devil: “When you were urging me, devil, to do these things and commit these sins, you told me there was nothing shameful about them.

Now that I am going to repent, you tell me they are shameful?” We must therefore overcome any such shame. There is also the notion that the priest is harsh and severe—that he bites, as I often put it. I use that word because this notion really exists. Someone says, “The priest will bite me.” Of course, this is only a figure of speech; he will not literally bite you. As people say, “What, is he going to bite you? What do you think will happen? Will he shout at you?” No, he will not shout at you. I tell you sincerely: he will raise his voice only when there is no repentance, or when you go there to boast about your sins. Suppose, for example, you say nothing about your former life, even though it was filled with sexual immorality, and you are asked, “Did you perhaps fall into any sins of the flesh?”

Questions have to be asked when the other person does not understand or recognize his sins. Do you know what the spiritual father’s questions are like? They are like the presence of a midwife at a woman’s delivery. The midwife does not give birth; she helps with the birth. In the same way, many questions will not create confession within a person, but a few questions may simply help the penitent recognize what is within himself and cast out—to vomit out, though the expression is not mine—to vomit out his sin. Indeed, it is an expression from Holy Scripture: Saint James the Brother of God speaks of “vomiting out sin.” What does this mean here? It means, my beloved, that when you go to Holy Confession and the priest says to you:

“Did you engage in immorality when you were young?” and then asks, “Why did you not mention these things?”—instead of saying that you had not recognized them or had not remembered them, or whatever else may be true, whether it was a matter of memory, carelessness, or something similar, you reply, “Why, is that a sin? I was a man!” If you boast about what you did, then your spiritual father will undoubtedly raise his voice. And what do we mean by raising his voice? Do not be afraid; he will help you understand. He will say, “My brother, God’s law calls this a very grave sin, yet you regard it as something to boast about, and even now you still consider it a reason for boasting?” Plainly, it is not something to boast about. But when you come with sincerity and repentance, even with the most sordid deeds you may have committed—

I assure you, there is nothing to fear. Do you think you will defile the person hearing you? Whom could you defile? He merely listens and is deeply moved. Very often I myself am moved, whether the penitents realize it or not, and I weep. Many times I say, “If only I had this person’s repentance.” I may not have done the things he is describing, but that is not enough. If we have no awareness of our sinfulness, we do not weep or mourn for our sins. We become like the Pharisee in the parable, who had no awareness of his sinfulness. That is a terrible thing—truly terrible. At every moment we must have an awareness of our sinfulness, even if we have not committed the things the other person describes. In this sense I envy him and say, “Look at the repentance this man has. I do not have it.”

This means that your spiritual father does not mistreat you or send you away. On the contrary, he even envies you and rejoices over you. And lest you think I am being untruthful—how is it possible, you may wonder, for the priest to rejoice over you? Listen to the voice of Christ: “I assure you, there is joy in Heaven before the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” He does not say over ten or a hundred, but over one—one sinner who repents. Therefore, if there are obstacles such as shame, the fear that the priest may raise his voice, the fear that he may tell someone else, or anything of this kind, I beg you, let us cast them aside.

They are tricks of the devil, which he raises before us to prevent us from going to Holy Confession. No, I beg you. “Behold, now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation.” At this very moment, what is being said is an opportunity God is giving us, so that the desire to go and confess our sins may awaken within our hearts.

“Devote yourself to the exorcisms.” We have already explained this in the preliminary catechesis. “Attend the catechetical instructions and remember what is said.” Always be present for the catechetical instructions. Do not be absent, and always remember what is said. There are, of course, two points here: one must not be absent, and one must remember. The first may not be very difficult, although, unfortunately, many people do not even put that into practice. They hear the word of God only sporadically, and their spiritual progress will also be sporadic. They hear the word of God by chance—

and their progress will likewise be a matter of chance. As Plato says, it will be “by chance,” not “according to knowledge.” Listen carefully: by chance, not according to knowledge. Plato says this. This means that we must not leave gaps in our spiritual formation. Yet the most important thing is to remember what we hear. Before saying anything about remembering, I should like to clarify something and comfort those who maintain that they do not have a good memory and that, when they leave the church, they remember nothing. The same may happen when they read Holy Scripture or another book: afterward, they remember nothing. I do not deny that some people may have a weakened memory. I do not deny it.

I would have some advice to offer about that. Nevertheless, let us assume that the problem cannot be remedied and that we are simply unable to remember what we read. It cannot be helped; that is how things are. We do not remember. Then we can answer with the familiar story of the basket.

I may have told it to you before; I do not remember. In any case, I will tell it for the sake of those who have not heard it. A woman complained to her spiritual father that she could not remember anything—nothing at all. So he gave her a dirty basket from a chicken coop he had there, covered with droppings and other filth. He said to her, “Please bring me some water from the well in this basket.” The woman looked at him strangely and said, “Is that even possible, Father? You want me to bring you water in this basket?” “I want you to bring me water in the basket.”

She went to the well and lowered the basket on a rope. By the time she pulled it back up, of course, the water had drained away. She lowered it into the well again using the windlass, and by the time she brought it back up, the water was gone once more. After doing this several times, she saw the futility of it. She untied the basket from the rope and brought it back. “Father,” she said, “how could I possibly bring you water in a basket?” The elder took the basket in his hands and said, “Why, I see that the basket has been cleaned beautifully. That is what I wanted to tell you. It may not have held the water, but it was cleaned.” John Chrysostom says the same thing at this point: even if you neither remember nor understand what you read, simply taking Holy Scripture into your hands has the power to cleanse you. That is, even if I merely open it—there, like this—and begin looking into it without understanding, it does not matter.

Holy Scripture has such power that it can cleanse me. Just think how powerful it is when I understand what I read and truly delve into it. I wanted to make this clarification for those who might say that they cannot remember. As for memory, I have a few things to tell you. I have spoken about them before in another series of talks, apparently in the one on Deuteronomy, but there is no harm in saying something here as well. Memory is a matter of cultivation. How do we cultivate the intellect so that it acquires sharpness of thought? How can someone be trained to look at a text and immediately draw from it what ought to be drawn? Someone preparing to speak reads a text and at once gathers the material he needs, arranges it into an outline, and, at first glance, forms

a framework from which he can present it. This is a matter of cultivation. In the same way, my dear friends, memory needs ascesis—ascetic discipline—and cultivation. There are many ways to cultivate the memory, but the best is repetition. Repetition is extremely important. No one should ever say, “I have read that,” or, “I have heard that.” It does not matter if you have read or heard it before. You will either see it more clearly or establish what you once learned so firmly in your memory that it cannot be erased. The first element, then, is memory—forgive me, I mean repetition. Another element is taking notes: writing down something that interests me.

I may underline it in the book, write a note on a slip of paper, or make a note in the margin—whichever you prefer. Or I may listen to a lecture and take notes. Once, during the talks we gave at Saint Charalambos, I saw a woman taking notes and said to her, “Bring a tape recorder,” because she certainly had the means to buy one.

“Bring a tape recorder,” I said. “Place it on the table so that you do not have to go to the trouble of writing everything down.” “No,” she told me. “With the tape recorder, I cannot see what I heard, whereas on paper I can see it.” And indeed, that is a disadvantage of magnetic tape. You can listen to what has been recorded whenever you wish, but you cannot see the whole subject laid out before you at a glance. That really is a disadvantage. So I would say that, even if someone records a talk, it is still worthwhile—if the subject is of great interest—to take notes at the same time. This is very important. Then there is also the deliberate recollection of what we have heard or read. This is another important element, a very important one. We hear a sermon or read a book, and something in it shakes us deeply or makes a strong impression on us. We can continually turn it over within ourselves. In this way we also do something else, something far more important than merely cultivating the memory: we connect the old material with the new—or, better, the new material with the old. Whenever you receive something new, you must find a place for it within your memory.

Where will you place it? Imagine that the memory is made up of many little drawers. If you put everything you gather into those drawers indiscriminately, then when you need something, you will not be able to find it. This is what happens to people who devour magazines indiscriminately, especially young children who read all sorts of magazines. Nothing remains; there is no cultivation at all. Apart from Holy Scripture, we could read only ten books in our entire lives and still become wise. How can that happen? It happens when we know how to read and how to gather things into our minds—not in a static way, even though memory does, in its basic operation, have what we might call a static aspect. Notice what I said: a static aspect.

Human memory must not remain static. An animal’s memory is static: a dog remembers, and a cat remembers, but the memory of animals is static. In a human being, memory must be dynamic. And to be dynamic means that whenever I receive new material, I immediately connect it with older material related to it. Nor do I do this merely to create a museum or a storehouse, keeping little drawers filled with similar material. The human mind is productive: it creates something it did not simply receive but brings forth from within. What I receive from outside is not yet my own.

Neither the old material nor the new material is my own. Connecting them is certainly an art, but as I connect them, I must form judgments of my own. Once I make judgments about the matter, it becomes mine. What is truly mine is something my own mind has brought forth. Now I am cultivating my mind, and this is when I become truly educated. An educated person is not someone who knows many things, but someone who knows how to carry out the process I have just described. He becomes a thinking person, and as he reflects upon what has been brought forth within him, he allows it to shape him. His lived experience, his will—everything—is shaped. As he is shaped, he becomes what the word “educated” really means: someone who has been formed, who has taken on a form or mold according to what he works through within himself.

“So that you may not only hear, but may also seal what is said through faith.” All these things are said, he tells us, not merely so that you may hear them, but so that through faith you may set your seal upon what is said. Here Saint Cyril is calling us to the intellectual process that I have explained to you. If only you knew how important this reminder from Saint Cyril is. It is exceedingly important.

Now we come to a new subject: “Cast out every human care from yourself, for it is your soul you are striving for. You are leaving worldly things behind altogether. What you leave behind is little, while the gifts bestowed by the Lord are great. Leave the things of the present and believe in those to come.” This is a beautiful teaching. He says that now, as you receive catechesis—and more generally throughout your life—you must cast every human care away from yourself. You must pay attention here. Do not be present in body but absent in spirit. Many times we are physically present somewhere but understand nothing that is being said, because our spirit truly is elsewhere...

For this reason, we must be present both in body and in spirit. What draws our mind away? Care and anxiety, when our mind wanders to outside concerns and affairs. We must leave those affairs outside and remain within, so that our spirit may be present and understand what is being said. Saint Cyril uses a beautiful expression here when he says that you must cast out every care, “for it is your soul you are striving for.” Your concern here is your soul, and therefore you are dealing with something higher. You cannot allow lower things to absorb you and cause you to lose the higher things.

Just think about the words, “It is your soul you are striving for.” This is a great thing. “You are leaving worldly things behind altogether.” You are leaving the things of the world. “What you leave behind is little.” Of course, the things we leave behind are small. “While the gifts bestowed by the Lord are great.” But the things the Lord gives us are great. “Leave the things of the present and believe in those to come.” And as for the lower things—

We are not going to abandon the lower things. We will attend to them as much as we should, giving them the place appropriate to them. This is what we were saying a little earlier. What are the lower things? They are matters concerning our food, our affairs, and so forth. And what are the higher things? The higher things are our spiritual formation. The tragedy is that we devote so much time and energy to the small things of the present. It is truly unfortunate, and in the end we accomplish nothing. You see, we run about for the necessities of life. We run from morning until night and wear ourselves out. Yet no time or strength remains for spiritual things. I often think about this, and I say it to you as well.

My dear friends, if we could set aside even half an hour each day to read something and pray a little, we would gain a great deal. Half an hour out of twenty-four hours is one forty-eighth of the whole day. If we gave only that one forty-eighth to God and to our spiritual formation, we would gain greatly. Just think what would happen if we gave a little more. And yet God is content to receive even that half hour and allows us to spend all the remaining hours of the day attending to the necessities of life.

Let each of us ask himself: do we truly dedicate even this half hour to our spiritual formation? Think carefully about this. Do we spend a little time studying Holy Scripture? Do we pray a little? If we examine ourselves, we will see that we do not give even this half hour to God, although it is so necessary that we should.

Saint Cyril also presents a very fine argument. He was not merely a man of theory, but a practical man as well. In other words, he could address the circumstances of his own time and point out many things capable of persuading his listeners. “You have passed through so many cycles of years, occupied in vain with the world.”

“Will you not set aside forty days for your own soul?” What does he call a year? A cycle. “So many cycles of years”—a year is an annual cycle. You have passed through so many cycles of years in this world, occupied with vain things. Can you not set aside forty days to devote yourself to your soul? Here is the internal evidence I mentioned earlier, showing that the catechetical instructions lasted forty days. Let me mention in passing that this is how we obtain what is called internal evidence. When studying a book, we have both external and internal evidence.

External evidence is what other authors tell us about the book and how it was preserved, while internal evidence is what the book itself tells us. Scholarship examines such evidence and can sometimes form a very sound and accurate picture of the subject under investigation. So the catechetical instructions lasted forty days. These eighteen catecheses—forgive me, twenty-four catecheses—were delivered over forty days. This is very important. It does not mean that instruction was not given beforehand; instruction was always given. Do not imagine that catechumens, who might remain catechumens for one, two, three, or five years, received no instruction at all. That would be unthinkable. But systematic, organized catechesis took place as the catechumens approached Baptism. They were then called those preparing for illumination, and, as we see here...

It lasted forty days. But let us leave that point. Saint Cyril says: You have spent so many years of your life occupied with vain things. Can you not finally guard yourself from worldly cares for forty days and devote yourself to something spiritual? Allow me to put it this way: forty days—that is, one Lent. And since this Lent is now approaching, we may speak about it here. My dear friends, no one is telling us to abandon our work. Not at all. We will go to our shops, our offices, and our fields. But please, as the coming Lent—Great Lent—draws near, let us give ourselves opportunities to...

breathe spiritually for a while and receive spiritual formation. There are many opportunities during these forty days—fifty, to be precise. What opportunities? There are Presanctified Liturgies and special sermons. Glory to God, our city offers a great deal of preaching. Visitors come and tell us this. Sometimes I think perhaps they are making fun of us, but they are probably right, because I do not suppose they have all arranged it among themselves. For many years, people passing through Larissa have told me, “Here in Larissa, we see that you have a great deal of spiritual work.” When they say “you have,” they are not addressing me personally or referring to what I do. No; they mean that, in Larissa generally, there truly is a great deal of spiritual work. Yes, this is a fact. We must believe it; it is a fact. Yet in other cities, scarcely anything is heard.

I have been amazed. Perhaps something is heard occasionally, here and there, or in certain parts of Athens—and Athens is by no means excluded from what I am saying. But believe me, this places an obligation upon us from God, because when God gives, He also holds us accountable. God keeps His ledgers and records what we owe. This means that we must respond. Otherwise, He will withdraw this gift, and if He withdraws it, then I do not know—the word of God may no longer be heard here. Is Larissa somehow more privileged than other cities, whose people do not hear the word of God? I do not think so. Therefore, we must respond. All these spiritual opportunities available during Lent, and indeed throughout the year, are now before you. Let us make use of them. Every Friday there are the Salutations. Let us go and hear the Salutations.

Let us listen to the special sermons. Let us open Holy Scripture more often and read a little more. Yes, there are also nighttime Presanctified Liturgies, as I happen to know, in addition to those on Wednesdays and Fridays. Let us attend them. Let us not allow any opportunity to pass unused, but make the most of it. You will see how much you gain. Believe me, you will gain a great deal. You will see it for yourselves.

Here is another very beautiful point, which Saint Cyril of Jerusalem, of course, cites from God, because he always grounds his arguments in Holy Scripture, in the Bible. He says, “Be still, and know that I am God,” says Scripture. This is Psalm 45, verse 11, which...

This is a very important point. The Greek verb scholazō means to be free from occupation and therefore to rest. That is also why we use the word scholē for a day off. Our people call a feast day scholē: “Today is a day off.” In ancient Greek, indeed, the word is scholē, with the genitive scholēs. Of course, the word later acquired other meanings as well. But one of its meanings—and its first meaning—is precisely this: to rest, to have no occupation. And so Holy Scripture says here, “Be still”—that is, be at rest—“and know,” come to know, “that I am God.” God. What does this mean? Would you like to know? It means that only when I set aside my daily affairs will I learn who God is; that is, I will acquire what is called...

the knowledge of God, theognosia. How is the knowledge of God acquired? By studying, by listening to the word of God, and by praying to Him. This is how the knowledge of God is acquired. What do you think, my dear ones? Did God establish the Sabbath, the seventh day of rest, merely for biological reasons? He did not establish it only for biological reasons. Of course, whenever God lays down a commandment, it serves many purposes. But beyond the physical rest that a person so greatly needs, there is also this purpose: that we may rest in order to learn the will of God, because amid our daily cares we do not have the opportunity to study enough. Therefore, on Sunday, my dear ones, we should receive rich spiritual nourishment.

Our study should be more extensive than it is on weekdays. We should attend Church, but we should also listen to the word of God more than we do on weekdays. Never forget this. “Be still, and know that I am the Lord.” In other words, be at rest and come to know that I am the Lord. What does “I am the Lord” mean? Do we not already know that God is the Lord? It means that I must study the things of God—that is, theology. This is what it means to know that He is the Lord. “Give up saying many idle things.” Give up speech that is idle, what we call idle talk. Renounce it.

What is this idle talk? What can I say? Whenever I encounter this in Holy Scripture, I become disheartened. Do you know why? Our Lord Himself speaks about this matter, about what are called idle words. An idle word is not obscene speech; it is not slander against sacred things or simply an accusation. It is speech without purpose—nothing at all, merely empty chatter, as our people say.

We are neither accusing nor insulting anyone, nor saying anything else of that kind; we are simply talking nonsense. It is what we call idle chatter. Some people say, “Let us just sit and chatter.” Nothing more. Do you know what the Lord said about this? I assure you that on the Day of Judgment you will give an account for...

every idle word. Oh my! That is why I told you: I do not know—something comes over me whenever I read this passage. If I must give an account for every idle word, then what, I ask, will happen with all the rest? Still, I certainly do not want us to become discouraged. I say this to myself as well as to you. For there is also the danger that, when someone sees things in this light, he may become discouraged and give up entirely. No, God forbid. We should simply correct this bad habit. Let us have no idle words. When we converse, our words should always have some content. Telling a pleasant joke is not idle talk. Speaking about the practical matters of life is not idle talk.

How else could we manage? Do we not have to discuss our work with one another? Must we not talk about our profession, our work, and our affairs? Of course we must. This is certainly not idle talk. Idle talk is what I have explained to you: it is nothing. I am speaking, but saying nothing, even though what I say may not be evil in itself. We can therefore be pleasant when we are in company. Of course, we may say something about the weather, as the saying goes, simply to begin a conversation. Yet inwardly we should feel a prompting even as we speak about the weather. We visit someone and say, “We had a great deal of frost this year, but today is a beautiful day.” This is certainly a point from which...

to begin our conversation. When I take a taxi to go to 303, for example, in the morning I may say to the driver, “It is cold today,” or, “It is a beautiful day today”—something about the weather, as the expression goes. But inwardly I feel a prompting: how can I find a point of contact so that I may say something more? I may ask him, “Do you have children? You must take good care of your children.”

“Do you look after them? Do you go to Church?” Whatever God illumines me to say, wherever God leads the conversation. We begin with the weather; it is a starting point, but we do not remain there. Then it is certainly not idle talk. Do you understand me? In the same way, whenever we find ourselves in company, let us always consider what benefit may come from the conversation. What is beneficial can take many forms. In any case, let it not be...

empty, idle chatter. “Neither speak ill of another, nor listen with pleasure to one who does.” Very good. Imagine this: the person who speaks ill of another lights a fire, while the one who listens brings him the wood to keep the fire burning. Thus it is not only the slanderer who sins, but also the one who listens, because he enables the slanderer to continue slandering. You may ask me, “What should we do in such cases?” Sometimes embarrassment gets in the way, and we say, “What am I supposed to do with him now? He has begun telling me all these things.” Well, when a person says...

always politely, “Are we any better?” Or perhaps, “What can we do? May God have mercy on these people. Today it is our neighbor; tomorrow it may be us.” Something along these lines allows us to escape from the situation—that is, it brings that conversation to an end. There is also something very beautiful that the Fathers teach and actually put into practice. A woman told me that she had done this, and how glad I was! Once, a monk under obedience told an elder, his spiritual father, that he could find no hesychia, no inner stillness. Other monks would visit him, especially one who was rather talkative. He would draw him into conversation and not leave him in hesychia. The elder told him, “Whenever he comes, say to him, ‘My brother, come, let us pray.’” The visitor has no desire to pray, so he will leave and not return. Well, this was most wisely...

said by a woman. How delighted I was with her! It was most ingenious. These are the clever ways, we might say, that a person—a Christian—should be quick-witted and intelligent enough to find without sinning. A neighbor used to visit this woman and, of course, disturb her. The woman said, “Come, let us pray; let us do a Paraklesis, a supplicatory canon.” The neighbor was displeased and stayed that time, but eventually stopped visiting, thinking, “I cannot get anywhere with her. She will not have it.” That is why Saint Cyril says so beautifully here, “But rather, be ready for prayer.” Be ready for prayer rather than accusing others. But I would like to dwell on one adverb here: “with pleasure.” “Nor listen with pleasure to one who speaks ill of another.” Notice what he says: “with pleasure.” He does not merely say “gladly”; he says “with pleasure.” The Greek word hēdeōs comes from hēdomai.

Hēdonē means pleasure; hēdomai, with rough breathing and an acute accent, means to take pleasure, to delight in something. My dear ones, what can we say? Speaking ill of others is a genuine pleasure. People take pleasure in accusing others, and so do those who listen. Oh, how we love to hear things about other people! We really do. That is why we cannot cut off this passion: it carries the lure of pleasure. I tell you truthfully; I have observed it. We enjoy it; it delights us to accuse others and talk about them. This element, like the pleasure present in every sin, is dangerous. It is present here as well, and we must be extremely careful. Speaking ill of others is sweet—exceedingly sweet—but afterward comes bitterness. I will give you an example.

Pay attention. After the sweetness we feel—the unspeakable sweetness of speaking ill of someone—when our conversation is over and we go home, how do we feel? I am not speaking about pangs of conscience; that is another matter. We feel an emptiness. Take note: an emptiness in our soul, a sense of being drained. What is this draining away? It has two aspects. First, since we put nothing into the soul, the soul remained empty. Second, and worse, the grace of God departed because we had been speaking ill of others. I will explain this further on, because God resists the proud. The grace of God departed, and the soul feels empty. The person who speaks ill of another, without realizing it...

places himself above the person he is criticizing. That, of course, is why he criticizes him. We speak ill of others because we want to show that we are not like them, that we are above them. But in this way we reveal our pride. And so God resists the proud. In resisting the proud, God withdraws His grace; and when grace is withdrawn, we feel empty. That is the process. Therefore, a person who speaks ill of others can never have the grace of God within him. It is impossible, and consequently he cannot make spiritual progress. Of course, we have many so-called “spiritual people”—in quotation marks—who have made accusing others their specialty and profession. Wherever they go and wherever they happen to be, they speak against others. If you look even briefly at their lives, I tell you quite sincerely, they have made no progress at all. This is true.

“Through ascesis, through ascetic discipline, show the spiritual vigor of your heart.”

“Cleanse your vessel, that it may receive more grace.” Through ascesis, show the vigor of your heart. What is this vigor? Do you remember, some time ago, when I was speaking here on the Catecheses of Saint Cyril of Jerusalem—in the Procatechesis, it was—about giving sinew to the soul? For the soul to have sinew means that it has strength and vigor. It is brought to life; it is a living person, not a soft steak that has been pounded or aged. I used this same example before. Such a person can do nothing; he has no will and is like a lump of dough. No, my dear ones. Ascesis gives sinew to the soul and brings it to life. Ascesis is a great thing.

Let us learn to engage in ascesis in many different ways and not allow any of our faculties to fall into disuse and idleness, from our nous, the spiritual intellect, down to the members of our body. A person who does not think allows his intellect to sink into idleness and sloth.

When people want to see a comedy at the theater, or watch something light on television or anywhere else, do you know why? Because they lack strength; they do not want to tire their minds. Suppose a very serious theatrical production came to our city—a truly serious and important play. Would many people go to see it? No, only a few would go.

More people would go if some hilarious comedy were playing. Why does a person want something light? The excuse is that he is tired today. But he is not tired simply because of today; he is tired because he does not put his mind to work. He tires it with other things. If he applies his mind to spiritual matters, he will find rest and breathe freely.

So you should know this. Television, with its constant stream of images, has also brought this about.

The mind is not put to work, and so it becomes useless and falls into sluggishness. We must therefore work, beginning with the mind—through thought and reflection—and continuing down to the members of our body. We must move; we must do one thing and then another. In other words, we must find every possible way to undertake ascesis, ascetic discipline. Movement is ascesis. Prayer is ascesis. Standing during the service in church is ascesis.

You may ask, “What if I am very tired?” Then sit down. But you should still undertake some ascesis. Say to yourself, “Even though I am tired, I will remain standing for another half hour, and then I will sit down.” Of course, I am not going to collapse to the floor. But ascesis certainly gives the soul sinew and inner strength. It makes a person strong. Today our children are prepared neither for war nor for life—and life itself is a battle. They are fit neither to fight an enemy in war nor to face the battle of life, because they have not learned ascetic discipline. This is dreadful, and it should alarm us, my dear friends. Yes, I beg you: help your children

to learn ascetic discipline. And finally, there is what he says about... Or rather, let us stop here, because the tape recorders are firing away, as you can see. God willing, we shall continue next Monday.

Να σας πω, εμείς ζούμε πολλά τέτοια παραδείγματα, πάρα πολλά. Αλλά τι να πει κανένας όταν βλέπει άνθρωπο που ποτέ δεν εξομολογήθηκε στη ζωή του, ποτέ, ποτέ, ποτέ, αλλά δεν ήταν υστερόβουλος. Λίγο πριν πεθάνει, του δίδεται η αφορμή και τότε μετανοεί, συντρίβεται και εξομολογείται. Σώζεται. Άνθρωπος που ποτέ δεν εξομολογήθηκε στη ζωή του, αλλά ήταν υστερόβουλος. Έλεγε: «Έχω καιρό, δεν βαριέσαι». Τι γίνεται; Ξέρετε τι γίνεται; Ακούστε τι γίνεται. Όταν κάποτε ο ίδιος το θελήσει, δεν προλαβαίνει. Ώσπου να έρθει ο ιερεύς, πεθαίνει. Έχουμε πολλές φορές αυτή την απορία: γιατί ο Θεός δεν κράτησε τον άνθρωπο αυτόν ένα τέταρτο;
