Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem warns catechumens that God examines the heart and withholds grace from those who approach the faith hypocritically. God may temporarily conceal the felt presence of grace so that believers learn responsibility, perseverance, and mature spiritual struggle. Christians must honor the name of Jesus Christ through mature conduct, lest their failures scandalize others and cause God’s name to be blasphemed.

We are in the First Catechetical Lecture, in the third paragraph. The text you have before you begins three lines down: “For whoever thinks that he can put grace to the test here deceives himself and does not understand its power. O man, keep your soul free of hypocrisy, because God examines hearts and kidneys. Those who are about to enlist soldiers examine the age and physical condition of the recruits. In the same way, the Lord, as He enlists souls, examines their intentions. If He finds hypocrisy hidden within someone, He rejects that person as unfit for true spiritual warfare. But when He finds someone worthy, He readily gives him grace.”
He will not give what is holy to the dogs. But wherever He sees a good intention, He gives the saving seal, that wondrous seal before which the demons tremble and which the angels recognize, so that the demons flee when driven away, while the angels surround that person as one of their own. Those who receive this spiritual and saving seal must also contribute their own free intention. Just as a writing pen or an arrow needs someone to work with it, so grace also requires those who believe.
Last time, we examined briefly the passage concerning the saving seal, in connection with a short sentence in the preceding paragraph, the second paragraph. So I will not return to the interpretation of this point about the saving seal, which is Chrismation, and so forth. I wish only to emphasize one teaching from this entire paragraph: what matters greatly is that you must not approach the faith with hypocrisy. That is the meaning of the whole paragraph. As you understand, both in the Pro-Catechesis and now in the Catechetical Lecture, Saint Cyril takes the opportunity to stress that among his catechumens, among those preparing for illumination, there must be no one who comes with a hypocritical soul,
seeking to learn the Mysteries of the Christians in order to ridicule them afterward, or perhaps to make a mockery of them—I do not know—or to carry them outside and disclose them. This is why he says that if you have come, in some way, to steal what we are going to say, do not forget that God searches you, examines you, and knows your intention. And naturally, that is a fearful thing for you.
More specifically, he says: “For whoever thinks that he can put grace to the test here deceives himself and does not understand its power.” Anyone who imagines that he can put the grace of God to the test is deceiving himself and failing to understand the power of God. In other words, he does not realize whom he is playing with. He is playing with things that are not to be played with; he is treating as a game things that can never be made into a game. The tragedy is that people are often frivolous enough to play with things that truly are not to be played with, especially the grace of God. They become meddlesome and mocking, and so forth. Although they are in a place where they could be benefited and grow spiritually, they do not conduct themselves in that way. Their intention is not good. That is why he says: “O man, keep your soul free of hypocrisy, because of Him who examines hearts and kidneys.” In Hebrew psychology, the heart was regarded as the seat of thoughts, and the kidneys
as the seat of desires. For just as those who are going to enlist others examine the soldiers’ ages and bodies—you see, when we are about to serve as soldiers, we undergo a medical examination—in the same way, the Lord, who enlists souls, examines their intentions. Wherever He finds hypocrisy, He unquestionably rejects that person and declares him unfit, unsuitable for enlistment. But wherever He finds someone worthy, He is ready to give him His grace.
This is what we often see in an audience, which resembles a dragnet, if I may use the Parable of the Dragnet. The Lord Himself says, “To what shall I liken the Kingdom of God?” In what way shall I compare the Kingdom of God?
To a dragnet. A dragnet is a fishing net cast into the sea, and it catches fish without distinction: good fish and bad fish, as the Lord says—that is, fish of inferior quality. The net draws every fish it has caught onto the shore. The sorting takes place there. The good fish are put to suitable use, while the bad ones are thrown down and left there on the beach, on the sand. That is precisely what fishermen do. What, then, is the net? It is the word of God. Rational fish—human beings—are caught in this net. It is the audience listening to the word of God. Yet the intentions of all the listeners in that audience are not the same. Some have good intentions, while others do not. Therefore, a selection will one day be made. And that selection, please understand, will not be made by the speaker, who is himself only an instrument. It will be made by Christ Himself. He is the One who examines people’s intentions and discovers who
is worthy and who is not. How can we know this in practice? By what results? By this: although it is certainly not the only indication, it is one sign. We see that those who have a good intention make progress and advance when they hear the word of God. Those who do not have a good intention make no progress. Why? Quite simply, because they do not receive the grace of God. Do you realize, my dear ones, how important this is? My brother, you can deceive another human being. You can deceive the preacher, your spiritual father, or your confessor. But you cannot deceive God. God is neither deceived nor mocked,
“God is not mocked.” So, are you going to try to obtain the grace of God deceitfully, without a good intention? You will never receive it. Never, never. God is the One who gives grace, and the result of God’s grace is progress—spiritual progress—about which I have spoken to you so many times. Here the paragraph ends. As I told you, I am passing over the subject of the seal, which we discussed last time, and ending with this very important phrase: “Just as a writing pen or an arrow needs someone to work with it, so grace also requires those who believe.”
He says that a pen—and we older people will remember the old-fashioned pens; this is what he means by a writing reed—or an arrow fitted to a bow needs the cooperation of a hand. How can a pen write by itself? I must take the pen in my hand and write with it. How can an arrow be shot from the bow? I must draw the bowstring with my hand. In the same way, he says, the grace of God requires those who believe. This is the thoroughly Orthodox teaching concerning synergy: the cooperation of personal effort and free intention
with divine grace. The grace of God does not come mechanically, imposing itself upon a person and sanctifying him. If chess pieces are left on a chessboard, they will remain motionless on their squares for a hundred years. Someone must move them. At any moment, the player picks up a piece and moves it wherever he wishes. The piece never moves by itself. If I accept the idea that grace must sanctify me apart from my own action and free intention, then I unquestionably resemble a chess piece. My dear ones, this view of how the grace of God acts in human beings is held by Protestants.
The Orthodox position is the one Saint Cyril gives us here. It is the cooperation of the grace of God with your own free intention and labor. It is what I was telling you earlier, during the time for questions.
Take care. My child, when you become ill, pray and go to the doctor. Going to the doctor is your own action. Receiving the grace of God is something that belongs to God. This, then, is the Orthodox position: there is always cooperation between human free intention and labor, on the one hand, and divine grace, on the other. To put it in simple language, these things do not simply fall ready-made from heaven. We too must work.
My dear ones, this is extremely important, because it is a necessary condition of our spiritual struggle. We may often imagine that the grace of God will help us without any struggle on our part. Those who are beginning the spiritual life can fall into the illusion that their improvement belongs entirely to the grace of God. This is not correct, because then a person could receive neither praise nor a reward from God. Grace is a gift—that is what grace means. Listen: grace means that something is freely bestowed upon you without your offering anything in return—absolutely nothing. That is grace, pure and simple. We say, “A condemned prisoner was granted a pardon.” What did he do? Nothing. He was simply a condemned prisoner, and the decision that he should be released was made by someone else.
He received a pardon. He himself did nothing. But this is not enough. As the saying goes, “With Athena’s help, move your own hand as well.” Grace is indeed a gift, but if I merely receive the gift, where is my reward? A reward is given for labor, and God will give His Kingdom to those who labor. It is therefore a combination of grace and personal effort. This raises a question that concerns us all: what percentage belongs to the grace of God, and what percentage belongs to our personal effort? In other words, what share does each one have? Is it fifty percent and fifty percent? Does the grace of God contribute more? Does my own labor contribute more? What is the answer? There is no standard by which to measure this.
These things cannot be measured on scales or calculated like accounts. The matter is left to the judgment of God, and the proportion continually changes. I can tell you only this: in the beginning, when a person starts his spiritual life, he has greater need of the grace of God, because he himself is paralyzed. As Holy Scripture says, his hands are “hanging down.” His hands and feet—his spiritual hands and feet—are paralyzed. He cannot free himself; he cannot do anything. He neither knows how nor has the strength. At that point, therefore, the grace of God comes, sometimes at the very beginning, one hundred percent—one hundred percent. But when the person begins to recover his strength,
we see that grace begins to withdraw. Remember when the Lord raised the daughter of Jairus from the dead and gave what seems like a startling command—and I put “startling” in quotation marks: “Give her something to eat.” It is the same point I made to you about Lazarus and the stone at the tomb. “Give her something to eat.” Lord, You raised her from the dead, and now You ask us to give her food so that she may regain her strength? Can You not strengthen her by Your grace? God does not abolish nature. You must understand this. He does not abolish what He Himself created. God made nature, and in this case nature says: you must eat in order to grow strong.
God does not abolish this. He could have kept the Hebrews in the wilderness for forty days, just as He kept them there for forty years. For forty years, Scripture says, their clothes did not wear out. Do you hear that? And when they left Egypt, not one among them was sick. Two million people, and not a single sick person among them. Could God not have sustained them on air, as it were—on nothing—miraculously? Could He not have kept them for forty years without any food at all? No. He gives them bread. But the wilderness does not produce the bread He gives; God gives it. Yet once He has given it, that bread—the manna—follows the natural process of nourishment.
They bake it and eat it; it enters the stomach and becomes blood and strength, natural strength. God, therefore, does not abolish nature. He cooperates with nature. I called the command concerning Jairus’s daughter “startling.” My dear ones, it is not startling at all. It reveals the participation of both God and man in the work of salvation—both together. So, in the beginning, grace is abundant. It reaches one hundred percent. When a person begins to recover his strength, grace withdraws; it conceals itself. Little by little, and from time to time, it makes a few sudden leaps downward. If it has reached ninety percent, it may suddenly be at eighty percent, without passing gradually through—
Seventy-nine, seventy-eight, seventy-seven. It is just as, from time to time in the wilderness, God allowed them to grow thirsty. “I let you thirst a little,” He says, “and you fell to your knees.” In the same way, grace may suddenly drop from ninety percent to eighty, so that you feel you are on your own and must contribute something more yourself. Good parents who know how to raise their children properly do the same: they create situations in which their children must act on their own initiative. Yes, yes. Once, when I was very young—not yet ten years old—I was traveling, and from that time on, you know, I developed a fear of trains that may still remain somewhere in my subconscious.
I was at Omonia with my mother, and we were going to Piraeus. We went down to the underground railway. Those of you who have traveled there know that people gather at each carriage door and wait for it to open automatically so that everyone can get in. And, of course, the first thing they try to do is find a seat.
Well, the doors opened. My mother had told me to go in ahead of her and find a seat. Being small, of course, I slipped this way and that, between people’s legs, and got inside. My mother was behind me, but she did not manage to board before the doors closed. When I realized, from the seat I had already found, that my mother had not entered, and I saw her outside with the train about to leave, I began to scream.
What screaming! Who knows how loudly I cried out? In any case, the train was stopped. The stationmaster came over, and the train was delayed for a few seconds so that the door could be opened again and my mother could get in. You may say, “That is an ordinary incident. What is significant about it?” The significance lies in what followed. My mother asked me, “Why were you shouting?” To a child, the question seemed absurd. “Why was I shouting? You were shut outside! Where was I supposed to go?” She answered very simply: “You would have told the conductor…” In those days, tickets were collected inside the train; now they are collected outside, at the exit. “You would have told the conductor, ‘My mother was left behind at Omonia, and I am going to Piraeus.’ That is what you would have said. I would have taken the next train and met you in Piraeus.” For a child—for me—that was inconceivable.
The whole thing happened against our will. But notice how the matter can be understood: at that age, for a moment, I could suddenly have found myself alone—unexpectedly and without warning. My mother was not alarmed, just as God is not alarmed when He unexpectedly seems to leave us without His protection. That abandonment is only apparent, and it serves to train us. We are meant to ask, “What happens now?” Nothing terrible happens. You must not lose your composure. God has left you for a little while to see what you will do next. You must realize that you now have to work, just as when someone is teaching us to swim and says, “We are holding you; we are holding you.”
They fool us, and for a moment they let go! We begin to sink. What do we do then? We act on our own initiative, moving our arms and legs to save ourselves. This is also what happens in our spiritual life, my dear friends. The grace of God leaves us for a little while in order to train us and teach us to work. This is important, is it not? It is very important. But the process continues. The grace of God drops to fifty percent. At first, the grace of God was ahead of us and we followed behind, like the ram in front and the sheep behind. Then the grace of God comes alongside us and takes us by the hand. At least it is still beside us, though we would prefer it to be out in front. But then, suddenly, we lose sight of the grace of God: it is behind us. It moved from before us to beside us, and from beside us to behind us.
We cannot see it, and then we begin to cry out, “Lord, where are You?” Read the Lives of the Saints, and you will see how often they uttered this cry: “Lord, where are You?” The Lord does not answer. Remember the temptations of Saint Anthony the Great in that tomb. At the beginning of his spiritual life, after he had left the world, he went and shut himself inside a tomb.
It was a kind of vaulted tomb, we might say, and he lived there. The demons beat him mercilessly. He protested and cried, “Lord, where are You? Lord, where are You?” There was no answer. Finally, after the demons had departed, Saint Anthony the Great once more said, “Lord, where are You?” And he heard a voice: “I am here.” “Lord, where were You?” “I was here, watching you.”
Watching you struggle. The grace of God had been behind him. Why did it move behind us? So that we might mature, grow strong in virtue, learn to wrestle, and learn to struggle. How beautiful this is, my dear friends! And what do we do? We become terrified that God has abandoned us. Do you really think God would abandon us? Do you know what God says through the Prophet in the Old Testament? “Even if a mother should forget her children, the offspring of her womb…” He does not merely say “her children,” because He wishes to emphasize it: “the offspring of her womb.” It is a very beautiful and emphatic expression. “Only then would I forget you.” There are, of course, women—mothers—who forget their children, and God says:
“Even if a mother should forget her children, I will not forget you.” Therefore, when God seems to abandon us, it is not true abandonment but abandonment for our spiritual training. He leaves us to work and to wage battle. It also shows that God now judges us capable of entering the stage of maturity. That is why He leaves us: we are no longer infants. An infant, of course, needs its father and mother, but one who is growing into adulthood no longer needs them in the same way. Therefore, if the grace of God leaves us and conceals itself, it means that maturity is beginning. And allow me to say this, my dear friends—since many young children and young people are listening to us here:
They certainly need to mature. In life, in their profession—in every area—we have a great need, a very great need, for maturity. Our children, you know, are often frightened. I remember when I first took up my duties. Communication was by telephone and radio, and the situation in 1948 and 1949 was difficult. We received many signals. I served in the air force.
The telephones were in the radio room, where there was so much noise that you could not properly hear what others were saying over the telephone. I remember that there was a danger of taking down a signal or telegram incorrectly. Although I was given the opportunity to transfer to another post—to the telephone exchange, specifically—I had a very simple thought: When will I mature and learn to take responsibility?
My dear friends, if we do not take responsibility in our lives, we will never mature. Teach your children to accept responsibilities from a very young age. Send them to the market to shop by themselves. There is, you know—not in the psychological sense—a kind of agoraphobia. Agoraphobia, in its proper sense, is a psychological condition, an illness. That is not what I mean here.
I mean that a child may be afraid to go shopping and buy something from a store. Send the child out to make a purchase. It does not matter if a mistake is made; the child will mature. Entrust your child with tasks—small ones at first, anything suitable—so that the child may begin to mature. This matter of maturity, of responsibility and maturity, is very important. Beyond this, however, there is another kind of maturity.
Responsibility and maturity must also be spiritual. A person must begin to approach spiritual matters responsibly and to mature in them. The grace of God most wisely brings about this spiritual maturity by leaving us for a time and entrusting responsibilities to us. You will see this further on. At the same time, grace conceals itself so that we may be helped to act for ourselves. This is why the very next paragraph, paragraph four, says: “You receive a weapon—not a corruptible weapon, but a spiritual one.” So you receive a weapon!
Of course, most of you have served as soldiers, and you know what it meant—especially if you had never gone hunting or held a weapon before—to take up a weapon and practice shooting for the first time in your life. It was a great moment for the soldier when he received the weapon into his hands. It meant that he was beginning to attain a certain maturity. My dear friends, that is how I felt. I believe you understand me. It was a great thing to practice shooting and to see whether or not we could hit the target. Here, however, he says: “You receive a weapon—not a corruptible weapon, but a spiritual one. You are therefore planted in the spiritual Paradise.” You are planted there.
In this spiritual Paradise, you receive a new name, one you did not have before. Previously you were a catechumen; now you will be called one of the faithful. You are transplanted among the spiritual olive trees, grafted from a wild olive into a cultivated olive; from sins into righteousness, and from defilement into purity. Beautiful… Forgive me.
“You become a partaker of the Holy Vine. If you remain in the Vine, you will grow as a fruitful branch; but if you do not remain, you will be consumed by fire. Let us therefore bear worthy fruit.” This, of course, comes from the passage that says, “If you remain in Me—I am the vine, and you are the branches—then you will bear fruit,” and so forth. And when he says—forgive me—“Let us therefore bear worthy fruit,” there is the responsibility, the spiritual responsibility, together with the spiritual weapon and all the rest. What were you before? Unarmed. Now you have a weapon. Therefore, you are being led into warfare. What kind of warfare will it be? Who will the enemies be? They will be the demons and every evil thing around you. Now you are being planted in the spiritual Paradise.
Responsibility. You receive a new name: you are no longer a catechumen but one of the faithful. You have a responsibility. Before whom? Before God and before other people. My dear friends, when God says, “Because of you My name is blasphemed among the nations”—because of you, My name, the name of God, is blasphemed among those outside, among the Gentiles—it means that believers of this kind have never accepted the responsibilities that come with their calling. What are the responsibilities of my own calling? I am a priest, and I have responsibilities. Which responsibilities? I do not mean the responsibilities of pastoral ministry; those are additional responsibilities. I mean that I must not dishonor Christ by scandalizing His flock.
The same applies to you. You hear this phrase, although it has acquired another meaning. I repeat, it has acquired another meaning, and people exploit it. Nevertheless, it contains a seed of truth. Which phrase? When someone says to you, “And you call yourself a Christian? Are we Christians in name only?” Do you know what has happened? It means that this person has discovered—God only knows how—that we have failed to understand our responsibilities toward other people and have not borne the name of Christian worthily. Our responsibility is great, and we will face a severe judgment if we scandalize others. The Lord says, “Woe to the one who scandalizes one of these little ones.” Who are these little ones? They are ordinary, simple people.
The Lord Himself tells you: it would be better for you to go and take your own life. Your punishment would be lighter than if you caused others to stumble. For that would mean you had failed to accept the responsibility of bearing the name of Christian worthily. You undertake to be a teacher, my brother, a schoolteacher. You have a responsibility toward the children. You have a responsibility toward society for the kind of people those children will become. You undertake to become a father and a husband. Do you understand and recognize the responsibilities you have toward your wife, your child or children, and society? In the same way, a spiritual person also has responsibilities. The greatest is to hold high the name of Jesus Christ. To hold high—I say it once again—the name of Jesus Christ. We therefore have a responsibility, but this responsibility brings us to maturity.
The grace of God, then, trains us so that we may mature. It entrusts us with responsibilities and helps us to grow in maturity. For we must say with sorrow that, unfortunately, we have many Christians, but not mature Christians. And this maturity must be grounded in knowledge. When I say “grounded in knowledge,” I do not mean that we should employ the insights of secular science; I mean that it must be pursued with understanding. This is why the Fathers say that we must undergo training in every craft. Yet when it comes to the art of arts and the science of sciences, shall we pass through life untrained, without ever becoming disciples?
Can that be right? Indeed, one of the Fathers says this—his text is in the first volume of the Philokalia, though I do not remember who he is. He says that because we bear the name of Christian so carelessly, people are likewise taken casually from the coffeehouse, from the tavern—as he puts it—to shepherd the people of God. In other words, people are taken from the tavern and made clergymen and shepherds of the people of God. This, he says, is why our faith is mocked. Such carelessness is extremely serious. It is a failure to accept responsibility, a failure to ask: “Do you know what you are doing, man? Do you know what you are undertaking?”
Whether you are a shepherd or one of the flock, you bear a great responsibility. But let us continue a little further: “May it never happen that what befell that barren fig tree should befall us, lest Jesus come even now and curse us for our fruitlessness.” May what the Lord showed both in His parable and in His miracle of the barren fig tree never happen to us. In the parable, He spoke of the barren fig tree, saying: “For three years I have come seeking fruit and have found none. Cut it down; why should it even use up the ground?” But the vinedresser said: “Lord, leave it for this year also. Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps it will bear fruit.” And then there was the miracle, when the Lord was entering Jerusalem:
On the eve of His Passion, He saw a fig tree and looked for figs on it. Finding none, He said, “May no figs ever grow on you again.” And immediately the fig tree withered. Of course, the fig tree itself was not at fault. If you like, it was around the fifteenth of March; there could be no figs in March. But His words were allegorical, and the event was symbolic. By this act, which completes the meaning of the parable, He wished to point to the Jewish nation, which had been like a carefully tended fig tree. It had failed to bear its fruit and was now to wither. Saint Cyril therefore says: may this not happen to us. May it never happen that we come to share
the fate of the barren fig tree. Truly, my beloved, how many of us—what a dreadful thought—are barren fig trees! We have produced only leaves, not fruit. This is why I explained earlier that when a person receives the grace of God with a good intention and labors with it, the fruits soon appear, and that person truly becomes a joy to behold. If you ask what kind of fruits I mean, must one run on foot to the hospitals? No, no; going to hospitals is not the point. The fruit is seen when a person acquires patient endurance and humility, when he has joy and bears no malice. That is the fruit; that is fruitfulness. Someone you knew yesterday as quick-tempered, you see today as a gentle person,
free from anger—free from anger. Someone you knew yesterday as a drunkard, you now see sober and self-controlled; he no longer gets drunk. That is fruitfulness. That is fruitfulness. What else should fruitfulness be? A man who was enslaved to lust, you now see living with the strictest self-control, lowering his eyes and guarding himself carefully. That is fruitfulness. Such people are indeed counted worthy—and God grants this—of more and more grace. For grace is added upon grace. Do not forget that. Let me remind you: what do you think the Parable of the Talents means? It means working with the gifts of God. The master gave one servant five talents and told him to put them to work; that is, he gave him certain abilities.
And that servant made them ten. To another he gave two talents, the ability to make them four. What did he say to the one who had made his five into ten? What does this mean? It means that the servant receives grace from God to double what he was given, together with his own labor—notice that. The third servant hid his talent, and afterward it was taken from him. The Lord said something remarkable: “Take the talent of this third servant—the useless, slothful, and wicked servant—and give it to the one who has ten.” Those standing nearby said, “Lord, he already has ten.” And the Lord gave this strange answer: “To the one who has, more will be given, and he will have an abundance.”
“But from the one who does not have, even what he has will be taken away.” The saying seems strange and contradictory, yet it is true. The person who makes progress and acquires gifts from God because he labors will be given still more and more by God. “But he already has so much!” God will give him even more. As for the person who does not labor, he will lose even the little he has. Do you see, please? This is fruitfulness.
Thank you.
“It belongs to God to plant and water you, but to you to bear fruit. It belongs to God to bestow the gift, but to you to receive and preserve it. Do not despise grace because it is given freely; receive it and preserve it with reverence.” Wonderful! Here he brings to a close the subject of divine grace and the work of personal effort. It is God’s work to plant you and water you. Your work is to bear fruit.
The Apostle Paul, using somewhat different terms, says: “I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth.” In that passage he is speaking about pastoral ministry: the laborers plant and water, while God gives the growth. What do you think I am doing here at this moment? I am planting and watering. That is all I am doing. Your growth belongs to God. Your spiritual growth is God’s work. I could preach five hundred thousand sermons here; if God does not bless and give the growth, there will be no result—none at all. That passage concerns pastoral ministry. So, though the wording is different,
Saint Cyril says here that it is God’s work to plant you in Paradise and water you. Your work is to bear fruit. Once again, we immediately see this cooperation of the two: what belongs to God, and what belongs to you? It belongs to God to grant the gift; it belongs to you to receive and preserve it. So God gives, and I receive. God may give, yet I may fail to receive. God is always giving, my beloved, but people do not stretch out their hands to receive. Why? Because they do not believe. Can you imagine that? There is a story you may have read. A schoolteacher once performed an experiment. He took off his watch—he was speaking about faith—
placed it on the desk, and said, “There it is. Come and take the watch; I give it to you as a gift.” The children did not believe that the teacher could truly give away his watch, so not one of them rose to take it. “Come now,” he told them. “Do you not believe me? I am giving you my watch.” Not one child moved from his desk. At last one child stood up and took the watch. The teacher said to him, “I give it to you; it is yours.” The others said, “We never imagined that you would really give it away.” That is what faith means. We cannot imagine that God grants us the forgiveness of our sins and gives us so many gifts.
We do not stretch out our hands because we do not believe it is possible for God to give them to us. Yes, my beloved, God does give them. God gives to you; you need only stretch out your hand and receive. I will say it once again: “It belongs to God to bestow the gift, and to you to receive it.” It is yours to take it. Good. But now we come to this: “Do not despise grace because it is given freely.” Take care; be watchful. Because something is free, you may come to despise it. At the outset, of course, we said that we must labor. But I also told you that in the beginning God gives everything freely. Man is helpless and paralyzed. He cannot labor; he cannot do anything. The grace of God must take the first step.
Without question, the grace of God always comes first. But what happens here? Because grace is offered freely, people may despise it. This is why, in various areas of life, people often think it better not to give something entirely free, lest it be despised. Let there be at least a small charge, so that it will be valued. Here is a simple example. In the days when we bought our schoolbooks—that is, when we paid for them—many of us kept them in our libraries, and we still have them today. I still have my schoolbooks from the first grade. I even have my first-grade reader. I keep it. But, but...
once the books began to be given away free of charge, when the examinations ended, we tore out their pages and scattered them across the central square of Larissa. You could pass through in June—the harvest month—and see the streets filled with pages from schoolbooks paid for by the citizens’ taxes. Why? Because the gift was despised. Because it was free, it was not valued. We must teach our people to value what they receive. God, our great teacher, says here, “Do not despise grace because it is free.” But what does He do to keep you from despising it? Yes, in the beginning He starts by giving it freely, but afterward He tells you, “Now you must labor.” Do you see? You must labor!
This is what the great teacher does, and this is what we too must do. My beloved, since we have begun discussing education, this great and enormous subject, our children will never value their school simply because we provide beautiful, spacious, airy, sunlit buildings with fresh paint and plaster. They will still take charcoal and spray paint and cover the walls with filth. They will value nothing. We must understand this: they will value nothing. Whatever we offer them, we imagine that the richer the things we provide, the more we will awaken their sense of honor. The opposite happens. There is no need for an experiment; we are already living through one. We are living with the results of these experiments, which means that we must...
create the right conditions and teach the children to contribute their own small share. We might return to what was done in earlier times. A village teacher—please forgive what I am saying—would gather his pupils in October, as soon as enrollment was finished, and tell them: “Children, for two or three days we are going to whitewash the school. We will not spend the money the Ministry gives us on a painter; we will use it to buy books for our library instead. Do you agree, children?” All the children of earlier times would say yes. As for children today, I do not know. So, we shall whitewash the school. Tell me, please: once the children themselves have whitewashed it, which of them will take spray paint and deface the wall?
If one child does take spray paint and deface the walls, the others will beat him, because they labored to whitewash the school. Let us clean the courtyard and the garden and put everything in order; we will make the whole school beautiful. Then what we create is properly valued, and the pupils become good pupils. These are sound principles of education. Give children everything, and they will value nothing. This is why Saint Cyril says here: “Take care not to despise the grace of God.” At least this applies at the beginning, because afterward you too must labor and bear fruit. If you do not labor, you will not bear fruit. “But having received it, preserve it with reverence.” On this point, my beloved, I would now like to make one final comment and close with it. I ask you to pay particular attention, because it is exceptionally, exceptionally important. What is it?
“Preserve it with reverence.” He said the same thing earlier: “It is yours to receive and to preserve.” It is your responsibility to receive it and then to preserve or maintain it—the meaning is the same. It is like material things, as you know. You may earn something, achieve something through your work, or receive goods as a gift. Of course, when you have to work to gain something, it is difficult—but not exceedingly difficult. There is something harder still: preserving what you have gained. Have you noticed this? For example, you earn a great deal of money. You complete some undertaking and make a great deal of money, or an opportunity comes your way and you acquire a large sum. That has its own difficulty.
Through your intelligence, diligence, resourcefulness, and so forth, you earned that money. You are holding it in your hands. But now another chapter begins: are you capable of preserving what you hold in your hands? Many people know how to earn, but they do not know how to preserve. In matters of faith, this means the following:
You received the word of God, went to Holy Confession, began to make progress, and started bearing fruit. God rejoices in you, other people rejoice in you, and you yourself rejoice in what you have become. But take care: you have a whole lifetime ahead of you. You must preserve throughout your life everything you have received.
And this, I tell you, is the difficult part. Beginning is difficult, but preserving what we have begun is harder still. Many of us imagine that only the beginning mattered, and so we fall into the illusion that once we have begun, everything is now going well. The water has entered the irrigation channels, we think, and all is well. But it is not enough simply for the water to enter the channels. I must keep watch over it and tend it vigilantly. In other words, I must preserve what I have received. You buy a new house, freshly painted and freshly whitewashed. If you do not maintain that house, my brother, within one, two, or three years it will look old.
The plaster will begin to fall away, along with many other problems. What does it need? It needs maintenance. If a building is not maintained, it will soon collapse. In the same way, the spiritual life must be maintained. If you ask what maintenance means in the spiritual life, there is an economic principle which says, “The best way to preserve and safeguard your capital is to increase it.” Have you heard that? It is very simple. The best way to preserve your financial capital is to increase it. Therefore, the best way to preserve what you have acquired spiritually is to increase it. That is the best way...
to preserve it. Do you disagree? Therefore, my beloved, we must begin to grow in the spiritual life. That is the best way to preserve what we have. There is a Latin saying: “If you desire peace, prepare for war.”
This means that you will preserve peace only when you are fully armed and never let down your guard.
I often tell you, “May you have peace.” I do not know whether you have ever considered what a profound subject peace is. It was a greeting used by the Jews. “The things that make for peace”—that is, greetings; the Jews would say, “The things that make for peace.” And so I tell you, “May you have peace.” Do you know when the peace of the heart—the peace which surpasses every nous, the spiritual intellect—is preserved? When we are constantly in a state of war. What does a state of war mean? It means being on guard. We take up our weapon, put on our helmet, and keep watch at every moment for the enemy: the devil and sin. Then, my beloved, we truly safeguard our peace.

Είναι δηλαδή εκείνο το οποίο βλέπουμε πολλές φορές σε ένα ακροατήριο που μοιάζει με μια σαγήνη, για να χρησιμοποιήσω την παραβολή της σαγήνης, κατά το «τίνι ὁμοιώσω;», «τίνι ὁμοιώσω την Βασιλεία του Θεού;», που λέγει ο ίδιος ο Κύριος. Με ποιο τρόπο να παρομοιάσω τη Βασιλεία του Θεού;
δημιουργήσουμε προϋποθέσεις και τα παιδιά να μάθουν να προσφέρουν τον οβολό τους. Θα λέγαμε εκείνο που παλιότερα γινότανε, να πάρει ο δάσκαλος τα παιδιά του —με συμπαθάτε με αυτά που λέω— να πάρει ο δάσκαλος τα παιδιά του σε ένα χωριό τον Οκτώβριο, μόλις τελειώσουν οι εγγραφές. «Παιδιά, δύο-τρεις μέρες θα ασπρίσουμε το σχολείο. Τα χρήματα που μας δίνει το Υπουργείο δεν θα τα δώσουμε σε ασπριτζή, αλλά αυτά θα τα πάρουμε βιβλία για τη βιβλιοθήκη μας. Συμφωνείτε, παιδιά;» Λοιπόν, όλα μαζί τα παιδιά του παλιού καιρού λέγανε ναι. Του νέου καιρού, δεν ξέρω. Λοιπόν, θα πάρουμε να ασπρίσουμε το σχολείο. Πέστε μου, σας παρακαλώ, όταν τα παιδιά ασπρίσουν το σχολείο, ποιο παιδί θα πάρει σπρέι να λερώσει τον τοίχο;
