Summary
Humanity must leave slavery to sin through faith and regeneration, entering the freedom of divine adoption and the blessed service of God. Christ redeemed humanity from bondage through the price of His blood, so genuine freedom is the willing surrender of one’s will to God rather than unrestricted self-indulgence. Through faith believers receive the pledge of the Holy Spirit, a promise of the fullness of divine life and eternal communion still to come.

Let whoever is here enslaved to sin be fully prepared, through faith, to pass through regeneration into the freedom of divine adoption. Let him cast off the most wretched bondage of sinners and enter the most blessed service of the Lord, so that he may be counted worthy to inherit the Kingdom of Heaven. Through confession, put off the old man, who is being corrupted by deceitful desires, so that you may put on the new man, who is being renewed in the knowledge of his Creator.
Whoever is a slave to sin, he says—each one of you here—should prepare himself through faith to pass into the freedom of divine adoption through the regeneration Christ will give him. He must be delivered from this most wretched bondage to Satan and sin and enter the most blessed service of the Lord. The subject here is servitude. But what kind of servitude? Certainly not the kind that exists among human beings, as when—
White people enslaved Black people, or even other White people in earlier times—prisoners of war whom they then kept as slaves, and so forth. We all know that form of slavery. This is not what is meant here. The speaker is referring to another kind of servitude: the relation of human beings either to God or to the devil. A person is presented as being either a servant of God or a servant of the devil. In truth, there is no third possibility in which someone is the servant of neither God nor the devil. Perhaps it is understandable that someone might remain enslaved to the devil. But why must he be a servant of God? That remains difficult to understand.
Is there truly no other way for me to live—no third way? Matters went so far that just two or three years ago the question was even brought before Parliament, and indeed by members of the clergy: expressions in the Euchologion such as “the servant of God is betrothed,” “the servant of God is crowned in Holy Matrimony,” or “the servant of God is baptized” were to be removed. Wherever the expression “the servant of God” appeared, it supposedly had to go. “What does ‘the servant of God’ mean?” they asked. You see the lengths to which people will go.
A person views the text of Holy Scripture through the political and cultural conditions of his own time and tries to interpret it accordingly. He makes himself indescribably ridiculous—truly ridiculous. Apostle Paul says, “a servant of Jesus Christ,” as do the other Apostles—Apostle Peter and Saint James the Brother of the Lord—who call themselves servants of Jesus Christ. But setting this absurdity aside, we might still ask seriously: must a human being necessarily be a servant either of God or of the devil? Is there no freedom? Is freedom merely an appearance? What kind of freedom is it if I have simply changed masters? My dear friends, first of all, the devil is not a master.
He is an intruding master—an intruder. He entered into creation, and the tragedy is that man became the devil’s slave because man himself chose it. When man was led astray by the devil and broke God’s commandment in Paradise, he effectively made the devil his master. This brought all the tragic consequences that followed for the human race. Consider how Adam and Eve, by obeying the devil’s will, submitted themselves to him. God allowed the consequences to unfold, so that the devil, this intruder, became man’s master and man became the devil’s slave. There is nothing genuine or rightful here—nothing at all. The entire situation is an intrusion. Must man, then, be a servant of God? Certainly. But what does this service of man to God mean? For—
if man is truly a servant of God, does that mean he is not free? To begin with, I would like us to set aside the understanding of the word “free” that prevails today. As you know, such concepts take on a different meaning in every age. In our time, the idea of freedom has become almost brutal. It has become so coarse that it reaches the point of absurdity. Suppose someone does whatever his own desires dictate, without considering the other person’s presence, whether he is causing annoyance, or whether his neighbor is being harmed. If that is called freedom, you can see for yourselves how crude the idea has become. So do not tell me how people today understand freedom. Their understanding is very different from what freedom truly is. In the setting we are discussing, freedom was expressed and understood in a far subtler sense.
But am I still a servant of God? When man was created, he was not made God’s servant. He was the image of God, and two of the most fundamental elements of God’s image in man are freedom and reason. There are many others, but freedom and reason are foundational. They belong to the image of God in man. This shows that man could never have been called God’s servant. It would have been impossible. Take even a quick look at the first book of Holy Scripture, the Book of Genesis, especially its opening chapters, where the story of Adam and Eve is told. At what point does God say there—
that human beings are His slaves? Nowhere. The word “slave” does not appear anywhere. On the contrary, God created man, and man stands before Him as a creature—a creature bearing God’s image, endowed with reason and freedom and with the possibility of attaining His likeness. “Let Us make man in Our image and according to Our likeness.” Through his freedom and reason, man was to labor toward attaining the likeness; and by attaining it, he was to reach theosis, divinisation, and thus become a god by grace.
Nothing like this is said of the other creatures. It is man’s ascent from being a creature—not a slave, but simply a creature—to becoming a god by grace. Thus, as I have said, nowhere do we encounter the idea of slavery. Moreover, even if man had not sinned, God’s plan—what is called God’s first will—was that God should take on human nature. God’s subsequent will is for man to be saved through the Cross. His first will was to assume human nature even if our first-formed ancestors had not sinned, so that humanity might become a partaker of the divine nature through the Incarnation of—
the second Person of the Holy Trinity. In other words, if Adam and Eve had not sinned, would God still have become incarnate? The answer, as we always say, is yes—yes. The Incarnation was not brought about simply by God’s desire to redeem us, but by His desire that we should become partakers of His life. Because we rejected this in Paradise and made the devil our master, the Cross became necessary for our salvation, since God did not will that we should perish—not that this even needs saying. The Cross therefore became necessary; this is God’s subsequent will. His first will is what I have already told you: God would have become incarnate even if we had not sinned, and through theosis we would have ascended into God’s embrace and blessedness. Do you want to see what I mean by “His embrace”? Christ, the Son of God who became incarnate and assumed our nature, sits at the right hand of God the Father. He does not sit there as the Word (Logos), for as the Word He is present everywhere and is of one essence with the Father. He sits there as man. What does this show? It shows that human nature is within the embrace of the Holy Trinity. Wherever Jesus Christ is, there humanity will also be. But humanity failed, beginning from the image, to attain the likeness—
and thus to enter the life of the Holy Trinity. God now helps humanity, through the Cross, to reach that same goal which was already contained in His first will: to be at the right hand of God the Father—that is, within the embrace of the Holy Trinity. It is beyond comprehension. So tell me, I ask you: is there any slavery here? Do we see any phenomenon of slavery? Servitude appears nowhere. Do you see something that I do not? I cannot find the idea of slavery anywhere. And now, in the New Testament—
Christ says, “I no longer call you servants, but friends.” This is a beautiful passage: “I no longer call you servants, but friends.” “You are My friends.” When Christ rose from the dead, He said to Mary Magdalene, “Go and tell My brothers that I have not yet ascended to My Father.” So we have servant, friend, brother. Notice the progression.
Servant, friend, brother. The idea of servitude arose through man’s own freedom when he submitted himself to the devil. By casting out the devil, the Son of God makes human beings His friends even before His Cross. Through His Cross, He secures their adoption by God the Father and now calls them brothers. Then, after Christ’s Resurrection, Apostle Paul writes, “heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ.” Do you see the idea of slavery anywhere? It is nowhere to be found. Let me also tell you something else the Lord said. A servant, He says—
does not know what his master is doing within the house. A master’s plans are not disclosed to his servants, but a son knows what his father is thinking. “I tell you exactly what I am going to do because you are not servants, but sons.” And there is something else: “A servant does not remain in the house forever.” He may be there today and gone tomorrow. The Son remains in the house forever. Therefore, you are not servants; you are sons, and you remain in the house. What house? “In My Father’s house are many dwelling places.”
“My Father’s house.” Do you know what “house” means here? The house is the Kingdom of God. The Kingdom of God is called a house. “In My Father’s house are many dwelling places, many rooms.” In other words, we are in the Father’s house. Where is the slavery? It does not exist—nowhere. Thus, when we speak of ourselves as “servants of God,” we do not mean that we are God’s slaves. We are sons; we are free. Why, then, do the Apostles say, “Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ”? Why does Saint Cyril say that you have now entered the most blessed service of God?
Why does the Church use the expression “The servant of God is baptized,” and so forth? My dear friends, pay close attention to this. First, it is an expression of the person’s own humility. Once he understands God’s gift, he does not reject divine adoption—not at all. Indeed, divine adoption is a central part of his spiritual life. We say, “Our Father, who art in heaven”; we do not say, “Lord,” because the title “Lord” expresses a relation of service. The Lord has servants; the Father has sons. Christ did not teach us to say, “Lord, who art in heaven,” but “Father, who art in heaven.”
Yet because we feel ourselves unworthy of the great gift God has given us, we call ourselves servants. Would you like me to prove it? Listen. In the parable of the Prodigal Son, the younger son was his father’s child. “Father, give me the portion of the inheritance that falls to me.” Come here, young man. What did you say? What did you say? What did you say? “Father.” Ah, Father! What, then, are you acknowledging? That the man from whom you are asking for the property is your father. Very well. After he had squandered his father’s property and came to repentance, he said, “I will say to my father: I am not worthy to be called your child. Receive me instead as one of your hired servants—as one of your servants, one of your slaves.” Who is lowering him now? He is lowering himself. Did his father lower him? No. He lowers himself because he is conscious that he has squandered his father’s property. And, as you know, my dear friends, that paternal inheritance is the image of God within us. When I squander my reason by using it to devise evil, when I squander my freedom on demonic things, when I squander the creativity God has placed within me—You know that man is a co-creator. Do you know in what respect? In the begetting of children. That is chiefly where.
I indulge my whims in matters of childbearing—you know the familiar things. Or I kill the children I beget. Indeed, the man has already begotten a child when his wife conceives. At that moment, the begetting has occurred; it is done. And afterward you go and kill that child. God makes you a creator, yet you go and destroy the very thing for which God made you His co-creator. Are you not then squandering your paternal inheritance on your whims, your egoism, and whatever you yourself desire? When a person comes to himself and says, “Where did I squander my paternal inheritance? How did I use this image of God within me?” he is shaken to the core, returns to God, and says, “I am not Your child. You call me Your child, and—”
“I desire that, but please allow me, my Father, to call myself Your servant.” This is why the service Saint Cyril speaks of is most blessed. But there is another side as well. Although God calls us sons, we must not forget that we passed through slavery to the devil, from which Christ redeemed us through His Cross. He gave His blood as the ransom. This is why we speak of redemption and call Christ the Redeemer. What do “redemption” and “Redeemer” mean? They mean that Jesus Christ paid the ransom upon the Cross in order to purchase us back.
He redeemed us by His blood. As the troparion says: “You redeemed us from the curse of the Law by being nailed to the Cross and pierced with a spear; You poured forth immortality,” and so on. What, then, do we see? God would indeed have every right to call us servants. Another passage has just come to mind—there are, of course, many of them. In the sixth chapter of First Corinthians it says, “Therefore glorify God in your body.” No, the verse just before that says, “For you were bought at a price.” You were purchased at a price, and that price is Christ’s sacrifice on the Cross. In other words, my beloved,
let us be servants of God. What is demeaning about that? Suppose you were to serve in an immensely wealthy and magnificent palace. You would consider yourself more fortunate than others because you served in such a place. If only I could be in the Kingdom of God, even if I were a servant there a hundred times over. Only let me be in the Kingdom of God! We have reached a fever pitch—almost a kind of hysteria—over the subject of freedom. “Do not touch my freedom!” I repeat: we have become hysterical about freedom. And when we hear talk of servitude, that we are servants of God,
we are seized by this hysterical rage and become terrified that God is supposedly taking away our freedom. You poor, wretched people, who gave you freedom in the first place? Was it not God? And now you are afraid that God will take it from you? I would say—and I have said this many times, ever since I was a young man, even as a boy—“My God, You made me free even to sin, if I choose.” Those were my very words in prayer: “You made me free even to sin, if I choose. So I give my freedom back to You. Restrain me and keep me from sinning.” That is what I say. Merely saying, “Set me free,” does not make me free. So restrain me. By “restrain me,” I mean: stop me in my tracks. Do not let me act however I please, because I myself am asking You to do this.
Restrain me so that I do not sin. A thousand times better to be servants of God, my beloved—a thousand times better. But we have spent long enough on this subject. Still, it is important, because we must free ourselves from these hysterical and even schizophrenic notions, from the way we have come to understand all these things today. We speak this way about freedom and about many other matters as well. So perhaps this has been an answer to what is being said today.
“Put off the old man, who is being corrupted by deceitful desires, through confession, so that you may put on the new man, who is being renewed in the knowledge of Him who created him.” You see, Saint Cyril now comes to confession, which is such an important subject. We find this element of confession in the Prodigal Son. Did the father not know what his son had done? Does God not know what we do, my beloved? Some may wonder, “Why does God want me to confess? Does He not know what I do? Must I confess it?” Confession is precisely what the word means: I acknowledge it and bring it out from within myself—not because God does not know what I have done, but because, of my own free will, I confess the hidden things of my heart.
Thus, to confess means to acknowledge the hidden things of my heart. The prefix means that I bring them out from within myself. I confess the secrets of my heart. As you all understand, this confession is an act of freedom. By using the freedom God has given us, we confess our corrupted selves. This is absolutely necessary—absolutely necessary. We cannot acquire a spiritual life without confession. So when we go to confession, allow me to say that we must not begin recounting our achievements or making excuses for ourselves. If we do, confession ceases to be what its very name signifies. I confess my sins without boasting and without justifying myself.
Sometimes we even boast of our sins within confession itself. I must neither boast nor justify myself. We make excuses very often. No. This is what I am, and I confess it. Saint John Climacus recounts, if I remember correctly, the case of a man who went to become a monk and made his confession publicly in the church, before all the monks. He says it was dreadful to hear what the man confessed: all his fornications, adulteries, and every vile thing he had done. He confessed everything before everyone in the church, saying that when he committed those things,
he was ashamed. “But now that I am going to confess them, why should I be ashamed? I will tell everything—not out of shamelessness, but as a true confession.” After all, this was the practice of the early Church: public confession. But, as you see, the Church made a concession because shame was an obstacle and said, “Very well, let confession be private.” This was a concession—pay attention, an act of condescension. Today, even with this condescension, when no one else hears and confession has even been made confidential, people still do not go to confess.
Saint Cyril continues,
saying that through confession we must put off the old man, who is being corrupted by deceitful desires, so that we may put on the new man, who is being renewed in the knowledge of Him who created him. So we must renounce the old man. Here there is a mistake that is almost universal; nearly all of us make it. When we go to confess our sins, we have a sense that our soul has been cleansed. Very good—our soul has been cleansed. But now, in this clean space, what must we do? We simply leave it clean.
Nothing else. That is, we add nothing further. Saint Cyril says that we must put off the old man but also put on the new man—the man who is being renewed continually. We put off the old man and then stop. We do not put on the new man. We simply remain as we are, clean and nothing more. Do you know how Christ described this? When a demon departs from a person, it wanders through waterless places. After wandering there for a time, it says, “I will return to my former house—the old man.” It takes seven other demons with it and finds its former house clean and swept. “Ah, very good!”
It returns and settles again in its former house, bringing seven other demons with it, which signifies a multitude of demons. And the Lord says that this is what happens to a person who has been cleansed but has done nothing to add something new to his life: his last state becomes worse than the first. In other words, my beloved, it is not enough for me to confess and be cleansed. I must put on the man who is being renewed. Believe me, we reach the absurd point of being satisfied merely because we have confessed and the burden has left our soul. We think that is enough. But we are not being renewed.
I wanted to emphasize—and this is very important—that we must be people who are continually being renewed. Saint Cyril does not say “those who have been renewed.” He says “those who are being renewed,” in the present tense, to show that renewal is unceasing and continuous. We must pay close attention to this, so that we may put on the new man, who will lead us to the full knowledge of our Creator—of God, of Christ who created us. “In the knowledge of Him who created him.” This is from Colossians 3:10, by way of comparison. In other words, we must come to know Jesus Christ.
Of course, after confession someone may say, “But we received Holy Communion.” What if I tell you that we do not know what we are receiving? I honestly do not know who this person was, because someone told me the story, but I do not think he is present here. As I said, I did not hear it from him directly, but from someone else. During the Divine Liturgy, after receiving the Holy Gifts, we were reading the Office for Holy Communion, where it says: “When you behold the deifying Blood, O man, tremble, for it is a burning coal that consumes the unworthy,” and so on. At that moment, this man received a revelation, an opening of his eyes. He noticed those verses and said:
“What does this say? What have I just received?” That is what I was told; as I said, I did not witness it myself. It means that he suddenly understood what he was doing and what he had received. Believe me, this happens to very few people. This is what “in the knowledge of Him who created him” means: that I begin to acquire full knowledge of the Son of God—of God Himself. Indeed, the Apostle Paul, or perhaps Peter—I do not remember—says that we must all attain to full knowledge: not merely knowledge, but full and profound knowledge of the Son of God. That is where we must arrive. It is not enough simply to say, “I have confessed.” I feel sorry for those who stop after saying, “I have confessed.” The result is
that they return to the life they lived before confession, and they actually become worse. They confess only once, twice, five times, perhaps ten times, and then no longer find any meaning in spiritual life, as though it had already come to an end. Before we have even begun, it has ended. Well, of course it has ended. The final bell has rung for us.
Yes, the end has come, and they say, “Was that all? Was that the whole spiritual life?” Nothing fulfills them, and they return to their former life. Tell me, is this not true? I have observed it in the way people conduct their lives, and it is precisely what the word of God teaches us here. So I beg you earnestly: we must begin to know, and to go on knowing,
being renewed again and again in Jesus Christ. Then we will fall in love with Him. A woman once said to her husband, “But you have fallen in love with Christ. Now there is no place for me beside you.” However amusing someone might think this is, it is not amusing; it is serious. She had made Christ into a rival. And there was something else at work in her: “Wait a moment. I love my husband—do You love him too? How can that be? Now he loves You more than he loves me. What is happening?” The temptation of rivalry was at work in her soul. Yes, yes—it is a terrible thing. But if she had possessed a little more understanding, that is, a little of the Spirit of God, she would have said: “I too will join him. Together, the two of us, let us fall in love with Jesus Christ.” For if the two of us fall in love with Jesus Christ, we will preserve and increase
our love for one another.
“Acquire through faith the pledge of the Holy Spirit, so that you may be received into the eternal dwellings.” Saint Cyril says that we must acquire the pledge of the Holy Spirit through faith. The pledge of the Holy Spirit means a promise. Does this mean that we do not have the Holy Spirit? We do. We possess the Holy Spirit, but what the Holy Spirit will accomplish in us—since everything has not yet been brought to fulfillment—is given to us as a pledge. In other words, it is a promise. That is what “pledge” means: a promise.
This is the pledge of the Holy Spirit, which is received through faith. Faith is the means; it is the path. I do not wish to dwell on the subject of faith, because there is a separate and very extensive catechesis devoted to it. I would like to dwell instead on the phrase “the pledge of the Holy Spirit.” As you know, the Church received the Holy Spirit abundantly on the day of Pentecost, and He came laden with His gifts. Some of these gifts are given directly, while others are given indirectly, in the form of a pledge. What, then, is this pledge of the Holy Spirit—the thing He promises to give us? It is the resurrection of the dead and the Kingdom of God.
Of course, in one prayer associated with receiving of the Holy Gifts, we say that we have already received the Kingdom of God. No, it is not in a prayer associated with receiving of the Holy Gifts. Yes, it is found in one such prayer, and also in a prayer at Vespers: we have already received the Kingdom of God. Woe to us if we were to say that the Kingdom of God belongs only to heaven. If the Kingdom of God does not begin here, there will be nothing for us there. We know this. The Kingdom of God begins here; the knowledge of God begins here; everything begins here. We shall find nothing there unless it has begun here, on earth. Yet the Holy Spirit has not given us everything yet. What He will give us in the fullest sense is the Kingdom of God and the resurrection of the dead. Today we say:
The Holy Spirit makes us incorruptible. How does He make us incorruptible? In potential. We receive the Body and Blood of Christ, and our flesh is made incorruptible in potential. This is what the Apostle Paul says elsewhere: our life is hidden within the life of Christ. We do not receive Christ; He receives us. We do not take Christ up; He takes us up. We do not carry Him; He carries us. He does not become a member of us; we become members of Him. Therefore, when, as the Apostle says, the life of Christ is revealed—
when the life of Christ is revealed, that is, when He comes again—then our own life, which is hidden within His life, will also be revealed. What life? The life of our entire being, body and soul, which will then be governed not by biological laws but by the Holy Spirit. This is contained in the pledge of the Holy Spirit, in the promise of the Holy Spirit. This is something great, something very great. That is what we possess through the pledge of the Holy Spirit. If a believer, a baptized person, truly believes, then, having experienced the other gifts of the Holy Spirit, he also believes in what is already held as a pledge. I said, provided he has experienced the other gifts. How could I distrust someone if, in all my previous dealings with him, he has shown himself to be honest? If, until now, I have had nine honest dealings with him,
and everything he told me he would give, he gave, and everything he promised, he fulfilled, would I have reason to doubt him on the tenth occasion? If the Holy Spirit has come and given me so many gifts, why should I doubt this tenth gift, namely the resurrection of the dead? Thus, it is not only a matter of faith; it is also a matter of experience. That is the point I want to reach. Do not forget that, as a rule, none of the Saints remained at the level of faith alone, because someone could attack faith and say, “Oh yes, faith is a lovely fairy tale. I close my eyes and convince myself that this is how things are: this is how it is, this is how it is, this is how it is.” Do you know what this kind of suggestion is called? Brainwashing. “This is how it is, this is how it is, this is how it is.” Say it a hundred times, and you believe it and accept it. Brainwashing. Is that what faith is, then? Do I close my mind and merely repeat everything the word of God says: “This is how it is, this is how it is,
this is how it is”? No, beloved, that is wrong. That is wrong. This is how an unbeliever would speak; this is how an enemy of the faith would speak. Faith is not a blind acceptance that subjects me to brainwashing. No, quite the opposite. Faith is an opening. And after this opening comes experience and knowledge. If I do not have this experience, I will not give my blood and my life or become a martyr for Christ. Without this experience, can there be faith alone? No. That is wrong. Let me give you a brief example that has just come to mind. Saint Constantine of Hydra, who came from Hydra and was martyred on Rhodes,
had sought the counsel of Saint Nicodemus of the Holy Mountain and Saint Gregory V, the Patriarch of Constantinople, concerning his martyrdom. He had become an apostate. He was led astray on Rhodes. He had gone there to work—a poor young man whose father had died—and there he was led astray and accepted the defilement of Islam. When he came to his senses, he was shaken to the core and said, “What have I done? Did I truly consent to become a Muslim?” Like Saint Gideon, who was martyred in Tyrnavos, he thought, “I shall not be able to wash away this sin except through martyrdom.” So he sought the counsel of Saint Gregory V and Saint Nicodemus of the Holy Mountain. Then, having become a monk, he returned to Rhodes and went to his former master, the same governor who was still there—the pasha, or whatever his exact title was. He said to him, “Do you recognize me?” The man replied, “Who are you?” “I am so-and-so. Do you remember me? Was I not once in your service? At that time you deceived me and made me a Muslim. Now I renounce Islam. I am a Christian.” And from that moment, beloved, his martyrdom began. He remained in prison for six or eight months, somewhere around that length of time. Every day they beat him to a pulp. What is astonishing is that he survived for so many months after so many tortures. He was a young man, not an elderly one, but still, he survived all those months.
What happened, then? When his martyrdom began, there were other prisoners in the jail with him, detained for various reasons. They were not Christians imprisoned for their faith, but ordinary prisoners; there were also Turks imprisoned for various offenses, crimes, and so forth. Do you know, beloved, what these others perceived—something that Saint Constantine himself must have perceived even more clearly? They saw the whole prison flooded with light. It was the uncreated light that we spoke about during the questions. Uncreated light filled the prison. Do you understand what this means? It meant that Saint Constantine was receiving not faith alone now, but the experience of faith. Why does God allow it to overflow in this way?
Why does God grant this experience in such an overflowing, unrestrained way, especially at the final moment? We too have experience even now. Every believer can have this experience. A young man once said to me, “If I had known that Jesus Christ wanted things to be this way or that way, I would not have fallen into that particular sin.” My child, who told you that merely knowing this would have been enough? You yourself could have acquired experience—an experience of the realities of your faith. Every believer has experience. Pay attention: every believer has experience. But I spoke of an overflowing experience, one that goes beyond the usual limits. Why does God grant it at the final moment? Because martyrdom is crushing and agonizing, and this overflowing experience is given to strengthen the martyr of Christ.
Therefore, we can no longer speak merely of faith. Faith means accepting something we do not see. Here, however, we have experience, which means that I now live the reality itself. I have entered the realm of knowledge and no longer have the same need for faith. You see, then, that faith is not brainwashing, as people outside the Church might accuse us of believing. It leads to experience. The only difference is how long someone remains for a time at the level of faith, and this depends on each person’s free disposition. A person begins in the realm of faith and gradually enters the realm of experience. Therefore, once we have experienced nine gifts of the Holy Spirit, only one remains: the resurrection of the dead and the Kingdom of God.
“Draw near to the mystical seal, that you may become readily recognizable to the Master.” A statement is made here, and the text returns to the subject several lines later. To preserve the unity of the thought, allow me to skip those lines and move farther down. Naturally, I will return afterward so that we may discuss the remaining lines as well. “Draw near to this saving and wondrous seal, before which demons tremble and which angels recognize.” I am giving you a brief and rather rough translation. Draw near to the mystical seal.
Become eugnoristoi—I will not translate that word yet; we shall analyze it—to the Master, to the Lord. Draw near to this saving seal, this wondrous seal, at whose sight the demons tremble and which the angels recognize. And what is this seal, beloved? We also spoke about this seal in our studies of the Apocalypse. The seal of God will be placed upon people, just as the seal of the Antichrist will be placed upon them with the number 666 or the name of the Antichrist. Thus, God has His seal, and the devil has his seal.
But when we speak of a seal, what exactly is this seal? In view of the technical capabilities of our time, I was even given some additional information concerning what I had told you about laser beams, together with a photograph showing that, indeed...
a person’s hand can provide an extremely precise identification by means of laser beams. The hand passes through a special machine, and one obtains an extremely precise identification. We need only say this: if the fingerprint of a single finger is unlike that of any other person among the 4.5 billion human beings who have passed over the earth, how much more could the entire palm, placed beneath laser beams, provide a truly exact and indisputable identification? Yet nothing of what will be inscribed upon this palm, upon this hand—the number 666—will be visible, because it too will be inscribed by laser beams and detected by a special machine, again using laser beams. This seal, then, is invisible, but the seal of God is also invisible. Nevertheless, both seals become visible in another way. What do you think? Does not a person who has received the seal of the devil, the devil’s chrism, show it even in his face? He does. And does not a holy person show holiness even in his face? Does not the person who possesses the Spirit of God reveal it?
Therefore, if both seals reveal people’s true character even to other human beings, how much more does the seal of God make a person eugnoristos—readily recognizable—in the eyes of God? Eu and gnorisis: easily recognized. “The Lord knows those who are His.” The Lord knows those who belong to Him. “The Lord knows those who are His.” He knows them. Why? Because they bear His seal. What, then, is this seal? Listen. It is the seal we received at Baptism. That is why these catecheses speak about it, especially this first catechesis, which is already beginning to introduce us to confession, Baptism, and the rest. It is the seal of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. That is the seal, beloved. What is the devil’s seal? The name of the Antichrist or the number 666—the number, that is, or rather the name. Correspondingly, the name of God is the seal of God. What is the name of God? Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This is what the Son revealed to the world: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. But can we always bear this seal worthily? Unbelief and atheism are wreaking terrible havoc, especially among our younger people, our children and schoolchildren.
Of course, this unbelief may have superficial features. Yet however superficial they may be, they are dangerous and demand our serious attention. Do you know how many of our children are capable of saying, “I do not believe in Jesus Christ either,” even while making their confession? Look, my dear child, you came to confess so that your sins might be forgiven. By whom? By Christ. Yet you say that you do not believe in Christ. This is why I said that these are foolish, superficial things, caused by this dust of atheism. It is just as when we go out into the street and a great cloud of dust rises: the dust is carried toward us and settles upon us.
This dust of atheism settles upon our young people, and certainly no less upon adults, giving people an entirely different orientation. This is a tragedy. It is serious—truly serious. I earnestly ask both you who hear the word of God and the young people who hear the word of God: take care. Under no circumstances, not even as a figure of speech, should we ever express denial or unbelief toward the Holy Triune God. Under no circumstances, because by doing so we insult the seal of God that was placed upon us at Baptism, an indelible seal. We insult it.
We must preserve this seal in every possible way, beloved. And what could be more beautiful than a genuine Christian who, with his head held high in a spiritual sense, lives according to the Gospel and openly displays this invisible yet unmistakable seal that he bears upon his forehead? I am a Christian. I was baptized in the name of the Holy Triune God. I believe in the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, the one, eternal, and holy God. What could be more beautiful or greater in an age when everything is being denied? Let us therefore keep clearly visible the seal we received at Baptism.

Πάλι είμαι δούλος του Θεού. Ο άνθρωπος, όταν δημιουργήθηκε, δεν έγινε δούλος του Θεού. Τότε αποτελεί εικόνα του Θεού και ένα βασικότατο στοιχείο της εικόνας του Θεού στον άνθρωπο είναι η ελευθερία και η λογική. Είναι πολλά, αλλά η ελευθερία και η λογική είναι θεμελιώδη. Αποτελούν στοιχεία της εικόνας του Θεού στον άνθρωπο. Αυτό δείχνει ότι δεν ήταν δυνατόν ποτέ ο άνθρωπος να ονομάζεται δούλος του Θεού. Αδύνατο. Ρίξτε μια ματιά πρόχειρη στο πρώτο βιβλίο της Γενέσεως, στο βιβλίο της Γενέσεως, στα πρώτα κεφάλαια, να δείτε εκεί που είναι η ιστορία του Αδάμ και της Εύας. Σε ποιο σημείο ομιλεί εκεί ο Θεός;
Σπίτι του Πατέρα μου. Εδώ ξέρετε τι ονομάζεται οικία; «Εις την οικία του Πατρός μου». Η οικία είναι η Βασιλεία του Θεού. Ονομάζεται η Βασιλεία του Θεού οικία. «Εις την οικία του Πατρός μου υπάρχουν πολλές κατοικίες, πολλά δωμάτια». Δηλαδή είμεθα εις το σπίτι του Πατέρα. Πού είναι η δουλεία; Δεν υπάρχει. Πουθενά. Ώστε δεν είμεθα, όταν λέμε «δούλοι του Θεού», ότι είμεθα δούλοι του Θεού. Είμεθα υιοί, είμεθα ελεύθεροι. Τότε όμως γιατί λένε οι Απόστολοι «Παύλος, δούλος Ιησού Χριστού»; Γιατί εδώ λέγει ο Άγιος Κύριλλος ότι είσαι πλέον στη μακαριωτάτη, λέγει, δουλείαν του Θεού;
νέος άνθρωπος, όχι γέρος, επέζη τόσους μήνες ύστερα από τόσα μαρτύρια. Τι έγινε, λοιπόν; Όταν ξεκίνησε το μαρτύριό του, μέσα στις φυλακές υπήρχαν κι άλλοι συγκρατούμενοι για διάφορους λόγους. Διάφοροι, όχι Χριστιανοί, οι απλοί δηλαδή, για την πίστη τους, και Τούρκοι μέσα ήσαν για διάφορα πταίσματα, εγκλήματα κλπ. Τότε, αγαπητοί μου, ξέρετε τι αντελήφθησαν οι άλλοι; Πολλώ μάλλον για τον ίδιο θα συνέβαινε αυτό. Έβλεπαν όλη η φυλακή να πλημμυρίζει από φως. Αυτό το άκτιστο φως που λέγαμε την ώρα των αποριών. Άκτιστον φως εγέμιζε η φυλακή. Ξέρετε τι σημαίνει αυτό τώρα; Σήμαινε ότι ο Άγιος Κωνσταντίνος εδέχετο όχι την πίστη πια, αλλά την εμπειρία της πίστεως. Γιατί το αφήνει να φύγει;
θα... Ότι μπορεί να έχουν μια πιστοτάτη ταυτότητα του χεριού με τις ακτίνες λέιζερ. Λέιζερ. Περνάει από ένα ειδικό μηχάνημα και έχει κανείς πιστοτάτη ταυτότητα. Αυτό είναι, μόλις είναι ανάγκη να το πούμε: αν ενός δακτύλου, ενός μόνο δακτύλου, τα δακτυλικά αποτυπώματα δεν μοιάζουν με κανενός ανθρώπου από τα 4,5 δισεκατομμύρια των ανθρώπων που έχουν παρέλθει στη γη, πόσο περισσότερο αυτή ολόκληρη η παρουσία της παλάμης, μπαίνοντας κάτω από τις ακτίνες λέιζερ, θα μπορούσε να δώσει αληθινά πιστοτάτη ταυτότητα, αναμφισβήτητα. Αλλά δεν φαίνεται τίποτα από εκείνο που θα γραφτεί σε αυτή την παλάμη, σε αυτό το χέρι, ο αριθμός 666, ή ακόμη, γιατί θα γραφτεί πάλι με ακτίνες λέιζερ και θα αποκαλύπτεται σε ειδικό μηχάνημα πάλι με τις ακτίνες λέιζερ. Αθέατη λοιπόν αυτή η σφραγίδα, αλλά και η σφραγίδα του Θεού είναι αθέατη. Εντούτοις και η μία ορατή και η άλλη ορατή. Τι θα πιστεύατε; Ένας άνθρωπος που δέχθηκε τη σφραγίδα του διαβόλου, το χρίσμα του διαβόλου, δεν φαίνεται και στο ίδιο του το πρόσωπο ακόμη; Φαίνεται. Τι θα λέγατε; Ο άγιος άνθρωπος δεν φαίνεται και στο πρόσωπο ακόμη; Εκείνος που έχει το Πνεύμα του Θεού δεν φαίνεται;
