Summary
The manuscript preface to Saint Cyril’s Mystagogical Catecheses directs that sacred instruction be entrusted only to illumined or faithful Christians who are prepared to receive it. True discipleship surpasses retaliation and litigation, embracing Saint Paul’s teaching that Christians should prefer suffering injustice to wronging one another. Sin clothes and binds the soul, while repentance, confession, baptism, and trust in divine providence offer cleansing, freedom, and rest in Christ.

This prefatory note was included, and recently the Apostoliki Diakonia published a translation of the five Mystagogical Catecheses. The editor of that edition includes this prefatory note, just as the translator, a hieromonk who lived two hundred years ago, included it, taking it from the ancient text found here. What is this prefatory note? Does it have any significance? Indeed, it has very great significance. It says that if you wished to lend someone the manuscript in your hands, or to make a copy of your manuscript, you must take care: you are to give the copy or the original only to someone preparing for illumination or to one of the faithful, never to a catechumen or an unbeliever, a non-Christian. Take care, it says, for you will give an account to the Lord: “Before the Lord you shall give an account.” And if you make a copy, “copy these things as before the Lord.” Write what you are writing as though the Lord stood before you. Why? Because it is the very same teaching. This was certainly not written by Saint Cyril. It is in another hand and was written by someone else, perhaps by one of the copyists of that period, or perhaps somewhat later. In any case, it reflects the spirit of that age, because—
you will remember that in the Procatechesis Saint Cyril repeatedly warned: take care that no one here is merely pretending to be a Christian, claiming that he wishes to receive instruction and be baptized. For the Church never handed on the content of her faith unless she was certain to whom she was entrusting it. We have already examined this, but let us say a few words about it again. Someone may say that this teaching cannot withstand exposure to the uninitiated. But the question is not whether the teaching itself can withstand it. The teaching itself certainly can. It is those who receive it—the people to whom it is given—who cannot bear it. It is like a powerful searchlight—
which, being a light, can cast its beam wherever we direct it. The issue is not the searchlight, but the eyes of those who face it. Will they be able to bear it, or will its overwhelming brightness blind them? This is why the Church has always been careful: first, so that no harm might come to those who could one day become believers; and second, so that the faith might not be brought into contempt by people who do not understand it. My dear ones, consider what I was telling you earlier in answer to a question: that the Gospel is cruciform, shaped by the Cross. Do you think this could be said among a worldly group of people? They may, of course, be baptized—yes, certainly, since today nearly everyone is baptized. But do you believe they would be able to hear this teaching?
Deep down, they believe that the Gospel is simply a book meant to make them polite and moral people—moral, of course, according to the standards worldly people choose for themselves. Beyond that, they understand nothing; forgive the expression, but they understand nothing. So if you speak to them about the cruciform character of the Gospel, they will tell you that you are misinterpreting it, that you are an extremist, that you promote monastic excesses, medievalism, antiquated notions, and much else besides. They cannot bear to see the truth; indeed, when you present what is genuine and correct, they even jeer at it. We need not look far. What did that woman speaking in Larissa say on television about Baptism? “A masquerade.” Was that not what she said? Why?
Because the Mystery stood before her eyes, but she did not understand it. To someone who does not understand, the divine things we do seem amusing or ridiculous. This is why very great care is needed. That care is not needed because the faith itself could suffer any harm, even if it were mocked and ridiculed. It is needed because those people would harm themselves, and their punishment would become greater. Out of providential concern that they not be punished more severely, we protect them from ridiculing things that must never be ridiculed. How did Christ express this? We must not cast pearls before swine or give holy things to dogs. He compares unbelievers and the uninitiated to swine and dogs.
Of course, He does not demean the image of God in any human being. The descriptions “dog” and “swine” refer to their lack of understanding. In other words, the manner and conduct of such people are like those of dogs and swine. Heavenly things can never be entrusted to people like this, only to be trampled underfoot. This is why the Lord says, “Do not give what is holy to the dogs, nor cast your pearls before swine.” He also means this: when the swine goes to taste the pearls you have thrown before it, it will take them for acorns.
It will try them and discover that they are not acorns, because acorns can be eaten, whereas pearls cannot. It will then think that you have deceived it by throwing down, not what its heart and appetite desire, but things that cannot be eaten. It will become enraged and trample what you cast before it; then, the Lord says, it will turn against you and knock you down. The Lord said this because when people fail to understand something, they mock it, and afterward they despise those who spoke of the lofty things they themselves could not comprehend.
From this prefatory note, with God’s help, we come to the first catechesis. Ah, I also wanted to tell you that these instructions still apply today, though certainly not with the same strictness. After all, this book has been printed and is in circulation; anyone can buy it. In this recent edition prepared by the Apostoliki Diakonia, the author of the prefatory note goes further: he binds by an oath anyone who might ever prepare a work based on these catecheses. He binds that person by an oath and tells him, “You too must write this warning.” And so they included it. But now that these books are sold in bookstores—
and anyone can buy them, you understand that the warning has lost some of its original meaning. Yet it has not lost it entirely. The book may indeed be sold in bookstores, but if at some point we are speaking with an unbeliever, we certainly will not disclose to him the more inward, profound, and mystical matters of our spiritual life or the content of our faith. There we will take the proper precautions. The word of the Lord therefore remains valid in every age. We now come to the heading of the first catechesis: “The First Catechesis for Those Preparing for Illumination, delivered in Jerusalem, an introduction for those approaching Baptism.”
“A reading from Isaiah: ‘Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean; remove the evils from your souls before My eyes,’ and so forth.” Thus, this is the first catechesis concerning those preparing for illumination, as the candidates ready for Baptism were called. These words were delivered “in Jerusalem.” We are given an outline of the catechesis: it is an introduction to Baptism, and its foundation is a passage from Isaiah that refers precisely to Baptism: “Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean; remove the evils from your souls,” and so forth. In other words: be baptized and come to metanoia, to repentance.
The central themes of the first and second catecheses concern Baptism, the value of Baptism, and metanoia, or repentance. We now enter the first paragraph. Saint Cyril begins in a solemn and somewhat daring way with this address to those preparing for illumination: “Disciples of the New Covenant and partakers of the Mysteries of Christ—now by calling, and in a little while also by grace—make for yourselves a new heart and a new spirit, that you may become a cause of rejoicing among the heavenly hosts.”
He calls those preparing for illumination disciples of the New Covenant, disciples of a new spirit. You are, he says, the people who will possess the new spirit and the new heart. What a magnificent thing! Everything new, everything made new. You will also become partakers of the Mysteries of Christ. Let us say a few words about what Saint Cyril tells us here. “Disciples of the New Covenant,” disciples of grace. What is the difference between being a disciple of the New Covenant and being a disciple of the Old Covenant? It is as great as the difference between the two Covenants—
and as great as the difference between their disciples and their ways of discipleship. My dear ones, just think of it! Are we disciples of the New Covenant, even though we were baptized long ago? Saint Cyril is speaking here to candidates for Baptism. I would tell you that we are not. How do we judge this? We remain Old Testament people in our manner and conduct. We remain attached to certain elements of the Law, the old Law, in which grace was absent and there was considerable narrowness of heart. Yet here we become disciples of the old Law—and if only we were at least faithful disciples of that Law! We do not even reach the level of the old Law. The old Law said, “An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.” And what do we do? We say, “We will take the other person to court.” We do not seek to wrong him, but neither are we willing to be wronged. He harmed us, so he must suffer the same in return—exactly the same. But here, my dear ones, we are acting in the spirit of the Old Covenant. Do you know what Saint Paul the Apostle says in the sixth chapter—yes, the sixth chapter—of his First Epistle to the Corinthians? Read it and see. You will be astonished, truly astonished. I am sure that we have not read it.
He says there that it had been reported to him that the Christians of Corinth had disputes among themselves. To settle their disagreements over various matters—fields, money, financial affairs, and so forth—they ran to the courts. And whose courts? Those of the Gentiles, the idolaters. Saint Paul the Apostle learned of this and said, “Are you not ashamed? When disputes arise among you, you Christians run to pagan judges to settle them?” There he speaks those famous words: “Do you not know that the saints will judge the world?” Elsewhere, not in the passage I have just mentioned, he says that the believer judges all things and is judged by no one. He judges all things but is judged by nothing, because he stands above them all. Thus he says that the saints will judge the world. Elsewhere the Apostle says, “We shall judge angels.” We, the saints, shall judge angels. Which angels? The fallen angels, the demons. And now you, the saints who will judge the world, go to be judged by pagan judges? Who has ever heard of such a thing? Then he says something else as well: Brothers, is it acceptable for one of you to wrong another?
Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the Kingdom of God? And there is something more: do you not know that it is better to suffer injustice than to commit it? This truth is a diamond. That is why I told you that I am certain we have either never read this passage or never paid attention to it. Is it not better to be wronged than to wrong someone else? But you not only refuse to prefer being wronged; you prefer to do wrong. And you prefer to wrong not merely other people, but even your brothers in Christ. These words of Saint Paul the Apostle are a most severe rebuke, my dear ones. You see, then, the Christians of Corinth to whom this epistle is addressed—
with this fault of theirs—were they disciples of the New Covenant or, as I almost said, of the Old Covenant? If only they had been disciples of the Old Covenant! They did not even reach that level. And so, my dear ones, I tell you this: sadly, we do not live in the spirit of the New Covenant; we are not disciples of the New Covenant. Many among us, though regarded as good Christians, live in the spirit of the Old Covenant. The rest do not even live in the spirit of the Old Covenant. Is this not a shame? We wrong ourselves. Here, then, Saint Cyril calls his catechumens, those preparing for illumination, disciples of the New Covenant. Let us pay attention to this. Let us take it to heart and ask ourselves how far we are able, day by day, to become disciples of the New Covenant—and partakers of the Mysteries of Christ.
He says that from this time onward, though you have not yet been baptized, you will be partakers of the Mysteries of Christ. What are the Mysteries of Christ? They are many. I will mention only one—just one. It is what we were discussing earlier during the questions: becoming a participant in the sufferings of Christ. This is expressed in the Apostle’s famous saying: “In my flesh I fill up what is lacking in the sufferings of Christ, for the sake of His body, which is the Church.” What do you say? Had the Apostle entered deeply into this Mystery of Christ—both theologically and practically, through lived experience? Without question. He had entered deeply into it; he knew it by experience.
And what did this experience bring him? Blessedness and happiness. To help you understand, I will take an outward example. When Christ was going to Golgotha—I said that this is an outward example—He was carrying His Cross. Yet He was unable to continue bearing it. At that time it was customary for every condemned man to carry his own cross. So they found a man coming in from the countryside, a certain Simon, who was from Cyrene in North Africa. The text then says something particular. It is found in the Gospel according to Saint Mark the Evangelist, and it is not by chance that it was written in that Gospel—but let me say no more about that.
Um…
It says that they compelled him to carry the Cross of Christ. Notice: “they compelled him” means that this was done against his will. It does not say that they entrusted the task to him, so that he might agree to carry the cross of a condemned man, either for payment or simply out of compassion, and nothing more. They compelled him. Perhaps the main reason Simon was unwilling—and why they had to force him—was this: he wanted to eat the Passover. In the same way, the Jews did not enter the Praetorium, “lest they should be defiled, but that they might eat the Passover.” This poor man may have thought, “Am I now to carry the cross of a condemned man? I will be defiled; I will be unclean—ritually unclean.”
“Will I be able to eat the Passover meal?” Perhaps this is what troubled Simon of Cyrene. You asked why Mark records his name there. He records it because Simon evidently later became a Christian; otherwise, he would not have mentioned him by name. And not only that: he then mentions two men, Alexander and Rufus. They were the sons of this man Simon, which means that they too became Christians. They were Cyrenians, inhabitants of Cyrene in North Africa, and Mark wrote his Gospel for the Christians of North Africa.
That is also why Saint Mark is the patron of Alexandria and of the See of Alexandria. This is why he mentions those names there—I have already explained it to you. He mentions Rufus and Alexander, who must themselves have become apostles, and also the name of their father, Simon. So they became Christians. Now tell me: although Simon was pressed into service against his will, do you suppose that later, when he was among gatherings of Christians—or if he himself became a missionary—he would have spoken about how he carried the Cross of Christ? You may be certain that he did. We too tell such stories with a sense of honor and are deeply gratified when we can say that we had some connection, however slight, with a very important person.
Saint Athanasius the Great says that he poured water over the hands of Saint Anthony the Great so that he could wash them. And how does he write about it? With pride and joy: he had known Saint Anthony! Simon likewise would have said, “My friends, my beloved, do you know that I carried the Cross of Christ?” He would have said it with pride and joy. Yet what he carried was the outward cross—a wooden cross, we might say. How much greater it is to bear the inward cross, to share in the sufferings of Christ. Even so, Simon truly participated in the Cross of Christ, because he bore its weight. In this way, my beloved, he entered into the mystery of the Cross of Christ, and he had joy—very great joy.
And Saint Paul, as I told you, had this experience in the depths of his own life: when he says that he shares in the sufferings of Christ, he has joy. So when someone enters into the Mysteries—when he becomes an initiate, for that is what it means to enter into the Mysteries, to become one who knows them through experience—he then sees the world differently, entirely differently from everyone else, and he is filled with joy and blessedness. This, after all, is the purpose of the mystical life: to lead the soul into other worlds, higher and more exalted, where it lives in blessedness. “For now by calling, but in a little while also by grace.” You are partakers of the Mysteries of Christ and disciples of the New Covenant—now, he says, by virtue of your calling.
And in a little while, what will be added? Grace. Therefore, “make for yourselves a new heart and a new spirit.” For this reason, form within yourselves a new heart and a new spirit.
The new heart and the new spirit are the marks of a disciple of the New Covenant. There is a gentleman present here—and never mind, for what I say is to his honor—though what I am about to say also applies to many of you, and I must tell you this. He sees, of course, that he was sinful, and that is how he ought to see himself. I did not say this to him when he was speaking to me recently, but I will say it publicly now. He has acquired a new heart and a new spirit, because he now sees everything in a new way and feels in a new way.
This is what we mean when we say that his heart has undergone a transformation. His heart has truly been transformed. In very many of you, my beloved, this transformation has begun. Be assured that you would not be coming here if it had not begun. I will not say in every one of you, but certainly in very many. It may not yet be very evident, though in some it clearly is. This is of immense importance. And if you ask me what the marks of a true Christian are, they are these: a new heart and a new spirit. His heart beats in a different way, and his spirit sees, feels, and understands in a new way. This is the mind and disposition that are in Christ.
There is a verse from the Psalms, from Psalm 50: “And renew a right spirit within me.” Place a new and upright spirit within my deepest being. When these inner depths are renewed—even what we call the subconscious—then, you understand, we have the marks of the new man, the renewed human person. Sadly, this is not very widespread. Few people possess it—few, very few. That is why we say, “This person has been born anew.” This is the regenerated human person. I would like to appeal to your love. This is the purpose for which we listen to the Word of God. And I believe in the power of the Word of God more than in anything else.
I believe in it very deeply. If I did not believe, I would not serve the Word of God. I tell you this truly. I firmly believe that the Word of God is fearsome in its power. It pierces openings in the heart. It brings the heart to katanyxis, to compunction. It wounds the heart deeply. It lays the heart waste so that it may make it new. Because I believe in this power of the Word of God, I tell you to listen to the Word of God, but also to allow your heart to be wounded by His word.
So, my beloved, I earnestly appeal to your love to keep this in mind: allow your heart to be touched by the Word of God and allow it to be transformed, so that all of us may acquire a new spirit and a new heart. Do you know how a transformed person appears in everyday life, out in the world? Even people living in sin can discern it. They see it and say, “Something has happened to this person.” That “something” which has happened, and which they cannot explain, is precisely what we have been explaining and discussing all this time. And all this, Saint Cyril says, is “a cause of gladness; become such for the heavenly hosts.”
Become a cause and an occasion of joy for the heavenly powers. Let the angels rejoice; let the Saints rejoice. See what a communion of joy we have here. And he explains why: “For if, according to the Gospel, there is joy over one sinner who repents, how much more will the salvation of so many souls move the heavenly hosts to gladness?” If, as the Gospel says, there is such great joy among the angels of God over one sinner who repents, how much greater will the joy be over so many?
How much more when an entire gathering of people becomes a cause of joy and gladness for the heavenly hosts! Do you know how greatly the angels rejoice, my beloved, when the faithful live the spiritual life? And likewise, how they grieve when they see people turning against God and living a life of sin. Thus we truly become a cause of joy for the heavenly powers. “Having set out upon a good and noble path…”
“Run the course of piety with reverence. For behold, the Only-Begotten Son of God stands ready to accomplish our redemption, saying: ‘Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.’ You who are clothed in the grievous garment of transgressions and bound tightly by the chains of your own sins, hear the prophetic voice saying: ‘Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean; remove the evils from your souls before My eyes.’” You who are clothed in the grievous garment of transgressions…
You are clothed in the grievous, dreadful, burdensome, and ugly garment of your transgressions, “and bound tightly by the chains of your own sins.” By chains. Do you know what this word means? It means bonds made of ropes. “Having cast them into Tartarus in chains of darkness.” Let us test ourselves a little: where is this written in the New Testament? “In chains”—the dative plural—“having cast them into Tartarus in chains of darkness.” Let us see how well we read Holy Scripture. Well? Anyone? No one? It is in the Epistle of Jude, and it refers to the demons.
There, “having cast them into Tartarus in chains of darkness” means binding them with ropes, with a network of cords or chains. In other words, it makes them prisoners. Therefore, “bound tightly by the chains of your own sins” means bound and constricted by ropes—that is, by the bonds of your own sins. Listen to the prophetic voice saying: wash yourselves, become clean, cast away your sins, remove your sins. “Remove”—from the verb “to take away.” “Remove your evils”: take the evils away from your souls, “from before My eyes.” God says this through Isaiah, in the first chapter, verse 16.
Here he describes transgressions as a garment worn by a person, and sins as ropes that bind him tightly. Shall we examine this? I believe that anyone who has experienced sin even a little has understood what a terrible thing sin is. I tell you this truly, both from my own experience and from what I have perceived in people whom I see held captive by sin. Sins truly resemble a garment. What do you think? This garment of sins shapes a person’s appearance, making him seem exactly as that garment would present him. And that sins are bonds which tighten around a person, bind him, and prevent him from being free scarcely needs to be said. How wretched people are when they bind themselves with the passions! You see them, and they cannot break free. What a pity! One cannot help but feel deep compassion for them. We see many such people around us. Sometimes they ask for our help, yet the distance between us and them is terrifyingly great. It is something like—do not take this literally; it is only a figure of speech—what Abraham says in the parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus: “Between us and you a great chasm has been fixed.” There is a great chasm. What a thing!
My brother, my beloved, you see another person suffering, held captive by his sins, and you want to help him. You need only begin to loosen his bonds. Tell him, “You can be saved. You can be set free. Do you know what you can do? Look: repent, make your confession, and God will take all these things away from you. You will no longer have sins or bonds tightening around you.” Pay attention to the words “bound tightly.” This may be a particularly expressive phrase: sin creates anxiety within you. What is anxiety? It is a constriction of the soul, and it also manifests itself physically. People often say, “What is happening here? Something is closing in on me; I cannot breathe. I have a knot here in the front of my chest.” All this is the familiar, extremely common condition of anxiety. What is closing in on you, and why? Sins and problems. And having “problems” means that you do not trust in Divine Providence. Therefore, this too is sin, and so on. Why do I tell you all this? I want to help you. Look, I am near you, right beside you, and I want to help. Do you know what the great chasm is? It is when you feel that, whatever you say, this person understands nothing. That is the great chasm. You see him suffering, and you can no longer help him. Is this not a tragedy?
I do not know whether you have seen this around you. It is a tragedy. It is like seeing a drug addict and telling him that using drugs is destroying him, yet he does not understand you. I have told you the following example on other occasions, but it has just come to mind again, and it is very revealing. Many, many years ago, there was a soldier at the 404 Military Hospital who was addicted to drugs. He was a very tall man who had been smoking hashish since the age of fourteen; he told me so himself. He had attempted to cut his wrists, as drug addicts often do. The difference was that, as you know, they do not cut the veins on the inner side of the wrist. They are afraid for their lives. They cut the outer side of their arms, where the veins are not exposed.
It is a kind of outlet for their despair. When they have nothing to smoke, they cut the outside of the arm—not the inner side where the veins are, but the outside—making crisscross cuts with a razor, like the diamond pattern on baklava. They cut first in one direction and then in the other, making that pattern. If you see such crisscross cuts on a person’s arms, he is a drug addict.
Well, they “saved” this man, in quotation marks, because his wound was not fatal. In any case, while he was being treated in the hospital, I found an opportunity to help him by speaking to him. There was nothing I did not say. “You are a young man, a strong and fully grown man. If you keep taking drugs, how will you work and make your way through life? What kind of family will you have? How will you raise children?” I spoke and spoke and spoke. I talked to him for an hour.
He was looking at me and listening to me. When I finished, he said, “What are you talking about, Father? Hashish is wonderful.” Tell me, I ask you: was there not an enormous gulf between him and me? A gulf. You want to help this person, but you cannot, and a terrible feeling comes over you.
You cannot help this person. How many young people do we have to whom we say, “My child, do not do this”? They do not understand you. “It is leading you to destruction.” They do not understand you.
My dear ones, I tell you: it is a privilege from God if you have even a little conscience, a little awareness, so that you are able to understand something.
When someone tells us something and we have even enough awareness to grasp what he is saying, that is a privilege. There are people who understand nothing at all. So, you have heard, he says, the prophetic voice of Isaiah: “Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean.” Now, in the Old Testament, of course, Baptism did not yet exist. There were sacrifices. But “wash yourselves” is truly prophetic. We see a foretaste of Baptism proper in the baptism of John, which was a baptism of repentance, not a baptism for the remission of sins. It was a baptism of repentance. John’s baptism opened the way for the Baptism of Christ.
John’s baptism is compared with the Baptism of Christ. The first, John’s, is a baptism of repentance; the other, Christ’s, is a Baptism for the remission of sins. The meaning and the difference are very great. Make yourselves clean. Remove your wicked deeds from your souls, from before My eyes. These are the things God says. If only we knew what privileges God gives us, and if only we could make full use of them, “so that an angelic choir may cry aloud to you,” so that a choir of angels may sing out: “Blessed are they whose transgressions are forgiven and whose sins are covered.” This is from Psalm 31.
Blessed are those whose transgressions have been forgiven and whose sins have been covered over. “You who have only just kindled the lamps of faith, keep them unextinguished in your hands.” You who have “only just kindled” them—“to kindle” means to light, and “only just” means recently—you have recently lit the lamps of faith. Keep them unextinguished in your hands. Keep them burning, that is. You know that during the Mystery of Baptism we light candles.
When we went to receive Holy Communion, we would carry candles, or at least people lit candles in earlier times. We preserve this custom today with a child whom we have had baptized. When the child goes to receive Holy Communion, someone carries the baptismal candle that was used at the child’s Baptism. You see, there are certain things which, if you ask how they came to exist, turn out to be remnants of ancient customs. It is like finding architectural fragments while excavating the ground and trying, from those fragments, to determine what the building was and what its layout and design were. In the same way, from the many remnants that still exist today—and must continue to exist—we gain a picture of earlier times.
They must remain, because these remnants should prompt a kind of archaeological investigation. We must go back and examine what once existed, digging into it and learning about it. That is what we are doing here. Do you know what we are doing here? We are holding an archaeologist’s spade, digging into the past, and unearthing the things we have forgotten. They have passed out of our historical memory, and we are bringing them back and interpreting them. So, the candle held by the person who had been baptized—today it is held by the sponsor, the godparent—was a symbol of keeping the flame of faith alive. That is why, in the Mystery of Baptism,
we held a candle. The candle—the light itself, that is—has many meanings, you know. One of them is this: it is lit in honor of the image of God in the human person. At funerals, besides everyone holding candles, we also place a candle by the head of the departed, behind the head in the coffin. We place it at the head of the departed. Sometimes we may place two, one at the head and one at the feet—two candles. You can see this in some icons of the Dormition of the Theotokos, and also in icons of the dormition of Saints, such as Saint John Chrysostom and Saint Ephraim, who are also depicted in their dormition.
It does not appear in every icon. Yet the candle I am speaking of is there. If my memory does not fail me, there is a candle in the icon of the Dormition painted by Theophanes the Cretan at Stavronikita Monastery. My dear ones, it is lit in honor of the image of God in the human person.
You will say to me, “What image of God?” I am expecting your objection. The soul has departed, and all we have now is the remains. This is how we speak in our language: “We will carry out the remains.” That is what the word means, though today we no longer stop to think about it. “Remains” means that which has remained behind.
This is the language of Holy Scripture. The word does not simply mean the dead body, does it? Words change their meanings over time, as you know. “Remains” means the remnant, what has been left behind. Left behind in relation to what? In relation to the soul. For the whole human person is both body and soul. The soul has departed, and the remnant of human existence has remained. What is that remnant? The bodily remains, the body. But why, then, do we light a candle beside the departed, since the soul has gone and the image of God has gone with it? Who told you that? The image of God is not found only in the soul; it is also in the body. This is because God became man, and we are in the image of Jesus Christ, since Jesus Christ is man and is the God-Man. And so, you see,
we light the candle in honor of that image. You may ask, “Could the presence of a candle beside the departed really lead me to discover this theological truth?” This is why I told you that we must preserve all these remnants with reverence, just as we handle archaeological objects found in the ground with the greatest care and place them in museum display cases. They have a great deal to teach us: they teach us about our exalted origin and about what the human person truly is. They also help us recover what has been lost over time. Here, then, Saint Cyril says that the candles symbolize faith, and he tells the candidates to keep them burning. In other words, take care that the light of faith is never extinguished within your soul. What connection is there between holding a candle and keeping the light of faith in my soul from going out? One is a candle made of wax; the other is a spiritual reality. But who told you that an outward form is unimportant? Where are those who say we have no need of outward forms? Forms lead us to the inner reality. Therefore, we cannot cast them aside. Where does the sin lie? It lies in stopping at the outward form. If I remain only with the form, that is sinful.
But if I begin with the outward form, then it is unquestionably important, because it helps me find the inner reality. When someone gives me almonds, they come from the almond tree with their shells. I will throw the shells away rather than eat them, but they carry and protect the fruit within. I break them open, take the fruit, and discard the shell. Was the shell useful to me? Yes, because it held the fruit. Is the outward form useful to me? Yes, because it preserves the inner reality for me. Therefore, my dear ones, we cannot cast aside these forms. People ask, “What do we need this for? What do we need that for?” Even for the sake of historical memory, we should preserve them as remnants, even if only as museum pieces. But why merely as museum pieces?
We have said that we should study these remnants in order to recover everything they contain. Thus, the candle I hold must remind me that, although the candle itself will later be extinguished and melt away, as a symbol and outward form it reminds me that I must keep the flame of faith unextinguished within my soul. “May He who then opened Paradise to the thief through faith, here on this Most Holy Golgotha, grant you to sing the strains of the bridal hymn.” How beautiful this is! “May He”—who is He? Christ: He who opened Paradise to the thief through faith, here on this Most Holy Golgotha.
May He grant you to sing this bridal hymn, this wedding song. Look closely at this passage. I want to dwell on something that touches the heart. It is very beautiful: “then, here on this Most Holy Golgotha, He opened Paradise.” Today we give these catechetical lectures in another part of the world. Anywhere outside Jerusalem, we would simply say “on Golgotha,” as indeed we do. We would never use this demonstrative word, “this”—“on this Golgotha.” Why? Do you know where these catechetical lectures were delivered? Inside the Church of the Resurrection, which Saint Helen built in the year 330.
If my memory does not fail me, Saint Helen built the Church of the Resurrection in 330, enclosing within it both Golgotha and the place of the Resurrection—that is, the Tomb. In one of the catechetical lectures, perhaps the fifteenth or sixteenth, I do not remember exactly, Saint Cyril speaks about the Antichrist. There he says—and these are what we call internal witnesses, from which we can learn many things—“In which temple will the Antichrist dwell? In this one where we now are, here in the Church of the Resurrection? May it never be! Rather, he will dwell in the temple that he himself will build, presenting himself as a spiritual descendant of Solomon and therefore of David,” and so forth. Where, then, were these catechetical lectures given? In the Church of the Resurrection. When he says,
“this Golgotha,” my dear ones, he was pointing to it: “on this Golgotha.” It was only a few yards away from the catechumens. I leave you to experience this in your own hearts. How vivid it is when the catechist says to you, “Christ spoke to the thief on this Golgotha, only a few yards away, beneath that very roof—on this Golgotha.” What feelings do those who visit the Holy Land experience? And if catechetical lectures are also given there that bring those ancient events to life, how deeply must they strike the strings of the heart! So, He who opened Paradise to the thief through faith alone—and this happened here, on this very Golgotha—
“may He grant you to sing the strains of this bridal hymn,” the wedding song. Here we see the very point that puzzled us earlier. On the one hand, Saint Cyril speaks of Golgotha and faith; on the other, he speaks of the bridal hymn. The bridal hymn is the Resurrection; it is resurrectional in character. These two realities, the Cross and the Resurrection, truly constitute
the heart and core of the spiritual life and of Orthodox spirituality. This is an exceedingly important point. We shall stop here, having completed the first paragraph, so that we do not begin the second now that our time is over. Let us conclude by recapitulating this: Saint Cyril is addressing those preparing for illumination, the candidates for Baptism. He reminds them that they must leave their sins behind—and later he will state plainly that they must go to confession; that they must receive the washing of regeneration, which is Baptism, in which their sins will be forgiven; and that throughout their lives they must keep the lamp of faith unextinguished, so that they may truly become disciples of the New Covenant and partakers of the Mysteries of Christ.
My dear friends, as I close, let me say this: it is a wonderful thing to be a Christian—but a Christian in truth. When a person comes into contact with the reality of the Christian faith and lives it, then being a Christian in truth is the most wonderful thing of all.

αυτός, σαν φως, έχει να ρίψει το φως του όπου και τον στρέψουμε. Το θέμα δεν είναι στον προβολέα, αλλά στα μάτια εκείνων που θα αντιμετωπίσουν τον προβολέα. Θα αντέξουν ή θα πάθουν τύφλωση από το υπερβολικό φως; Γι' αυτό λοιπόν η Εκκλησία πάντοτε ήτο προσεκτική, με σκοπό, με σκοπό να μην πάθουν κακό εκείνοι που κάποτε μπορούσαν να γίνουν πιστοί. Αλλά και κάτι ακόμα: για να μην διασύρεται η πίστη από ανθρώπους που δεν κατανοούσαν. Αγαπητοί μου, αυτά που σας έλεγα προηγουμένως, σαν απορία, ότι το Ευαγγέλιο είναι σταυρικό. Τι λέτε, αυτό θα μπορούσε να ειπωθεί σε ένα κοσμικό κύκλο ανθρώπων; Βαπτισμένων βεβαίως, ναι ασφαλώς, γιατί σήμερα όλοι βαπτιζόμεθα. Πιστεύετε ότι θα μπορούσαν να ακούσουν αυτό το θέμα;
Λέει εκεί: Του είχε αναφερθεί ότι οι χριστιανοί της Κορίνθου μεταξύ των είχαν αντιδικίες και, για να λύσουν τις αντιδικίες των επί διαφόρων θεμάτων, χωραφιών, χρημάτων, υποθέσεων οικονομικών κλπ., και για να λύσουν τις διαφορές τους, τρέχανε στα δικαστήρια. Ποια δικαστήρια; Των εθνικών, των ειδωλολατρών. Το έμαθε ο Απόστολος Παύλος αυτό και λέει: «Δεν ντρέπεστε; Τρέχετε, όταν έχετε διαφορές, τρέχετε στους ειδωλολάτρας δικαστάς, εσείς οι χριστιανοί, να βρείτε τις διαφορές σας;» Λέει εκεί τον περίφημο λόγο: «Δεν γνωρίζετε ότι οι Άγιοι κρινούσι τον κόσμον;» Αυτοί δε υπ' ουδενός ανακρίνονται. Το λέει σε άλλο σημείο, όχι στο σημείο, στην περικοπή που σας ανέφερα, ότι ο πιστός τα πάντα ανακρίνει, υπ' ουδενός ανακρίνεται. Τα πάντα κρίνει, από τίποτα δεν κρίνεται, γιατί είναι ανώτερος πάντων. Λέγει, λοιπόν, οι Άγιοι θα κρίνουν τον κόσμο. Αλλού λέγει ο Απόστολος: «Κρινούμεν αγγέλους». Εμείς οι Άγιοι θα κρίνουμε τους αγγέλους. Τους ποιους αγγέλους; Τους πεπτωκότες, τους δαίμονες. Και τώρα εσείς, οι Άγιοι που θα κρίνετε τον κόσμο, πηγαίνετε να σας κρίνουν οι ειδωλολάτρες δικασταί; Πού ακούστηκε αυτό; Κι ύστερα κάτι άλλο λέει, κάτι άλλο: Επιτρέπεται, αδελφοί, ο ένας να αδικεί τον άλλον;
Να γίνετε αντικείμενον, υπόθεση, αντικείμενο χαράς των ουρανίων δυνάμεων. Να χαρούν οι άγγελοι, να χαρούν οι Άγιοι. Κοιτάξτε εδώ μια κοινωνία χαράς. Και αιτιολογεί: «Ει γαρ επί ενί αμαρτωλώ μετανοούντι χαρά γίνεται κατά το Ευαγγέλιον, πόσω μάλλον η τοσούτων σωτηρία ψυχών κινήσει προς ευφροσύνην τους ουρανίους;» Εάν, λέγει το Ευαγγέλιον, για έναν αμαρτωλό που μετανοεί γίνεται τόση χαρά στους αγγέλους του Θεού, πόσο περισσότερο;
Εάν όμως ξεκινήσω από τον τύπο, τότε αναμφισβήτητα ο τύπος είναι σπουδαίος για να βρω την ουσία. Όταν μου δίνουν αμύγδαλα, μου τα δίνουν από την αμυγδαλιά με τα τσόφλια. Αλλά τα τσόφλια αυτά θα τα πετάξω, δεν θα τα φάω, αλλά είναι φορείς του καρπού από μέσα. Θα τα σπάσω, θα πάρω τον καρπό, θα πετάξω το τσόφλι. Μου ήταν χρήσιμο το τσόφλι; Ναι, γιατί κρατούσε τον καρπό. Μου είναι χρήσιμος ο τύπος; Ναι, γιατί μου κρατάει την ουσία. Δεν μπορούμε λοιπόν, αγαπητοί μου, να πετάμε τους τύπους. «Και τι μας χρειάζεται αυτό και τι μας χρειάζεται εκείνο;» Και για λόγους ακόμα ιστορικής μνήμης θα πρέπει να τα διατηρούμε ως λείψανα, έστω μουσειακά. Αλλά γιατί μουσειακά;
