Summary

Baptism is presented as rebirth, the vehicle to heaven, the delight of Paradise, the entrance to God’s Kingdom, and the gift of adoption. Saint Perpetua’s vision of the heavenly ladder illustrates how steadfast faith overcomes the serpent, fear, and the threat of martyrdom. Christians should look beyond the priest and baptismal water to God’s active grace, guarding their souls and remaining in the hope of eternal salvation.

Rebirth of the soul, a radiant garment, a holy and indestructible seal. This is as far as we went in our explanation last Monday. Now there remain two or three characteristic qualities that complete our account of the value of Baptism: a vehicle to heaven, the delight of Paradise, the means of entry into the Kingdom, and the gift of adoption. Let us look at these final qualities of Baptism. They are not merely literary expressions—or, more precisely, poetic flourishes—intended to embellish and rhetorically exalt the Mystery of Baptism. These expressions have real and essential meaning. Thus, Baptism, the Mystery of Baptism, is called a vehicle to heaven. In other words, it is what carries you to heaven. Indeed, as we were told earlier, we know that without the Mystery of Baptism we cannot ascend to heaven, because Baptism is what gives us rebirth. Somewhere in his book The Mystical Theology of the Eastern Orthodox Church—a profoundly important book—Lossky, a Russian of the diaspora who knew Greek well, says...

He was a remarkable man, and went so far as to say that anyone who does not know Greek cannot understand theology. In any case, he has reposed; may his memory be eternal. I would recommend this book to those who have at least some familiarity with these matters, because it is somewhat difficult.

You should read it. Let me repeat the title once more: The Mystical Theology of the Eastern Orthodox Church, by Lossky—Vladimir Lossky. Somewhere in that book he says that three things prevented man from ascending to heaven. The first was his material constitution, his material nature. How could he ascend?

How could this material nature, this human nature taken from the material world, ascend? How could it ever enter the spiritual heaven? The second obstacle was man's mortality. In heaven, only what is immortal can live. The third was sin. These three things made it impossible for man to ascend to heaven—so utterly impossible that we cannot even grasp the extent of it. Christ overcame all three in the following way. He overcame the first obstacle—that man is material and could not enter the spiritual heaven—by God Himself becoming man and assuming matter, that is, human nature. And so we behold something beyond comprehension:

a man seated at the right hand of God the Father. It is the Son in His human nature, after the Ascension, when He ascended into heaven. Christ resolved the problem of mortality in this way: He will raise us from the dead, and we will be able to live eternally with our whole being, both soul and body. Christ also overcame sin through His death upon the Cross, granting us forgiveness. You see, then, that all three obstacles were overcome in Christ. Yet what will bring us up there is what the Lord Himself declared clearly—more clearly than words can say—in the passage with which the Gospel according to Matthew concludes: “Preach the Gospel to all creation, throughout the whole inhabited world,

to all nations. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe”—and therefore, of course, is not baptized, which need not even be stated—“will be condemned.” Who, then, will be saved? The one who believes and is baptized. If I needed only to believe and not to be baptized, the Lord would simply have said, “He who believes.” If I needed only to be baptized and not to believe—as happens for the time being in infant Baptism, when the child does not yet possess faith but is expected to acquire it later—then again, I would not be saved. Both together will save me: believing and being baptized. This means, my dear friends, that Baptism truly is the vehicle that leads us to heaven.

“The delight of Paradise”: Baptism is the enjoyment of Paradise. You remember that when God made Paradise, it was here on earth. Today, Paradise is a transitional state through which we pass before entering the Kingdom of God. Paradise is not the Kingdom of God. I have told you this many times. At present, it is the dwelling place of souls. Ancient Paradise, however, was the dwelling place of the whole human being, just as the Kingdom of God will also be the “dwelling place”—I put that expression in quotation marks, because we do not know what it will be; God knows—of the whole human being once more, because the body will have risen.

We will enter the Kingdom of God with our human bodies and, of course, with our souls. Ancient Paradise, then, my dear friends, was a place of delight. “Delight” means enjoyment: something delightful, something pleasing. The Book of Genesis says that God planted Paradise, made it, and placed Adam in the Paradise of delight. Yet search there and see what this delight means. There are no sexual relations, because Adam and Eve live in virginity. Adam first knows Eve as his wife after the Fall, outside Paradise. They do not eat meat or roast it, since meat is not part of their food. There is no aroma of roasting meat to tantalize the nose, no savory delicacies, no little glass of wine.

There was no wine. Now perhaps wine existed slightly earlier, but it seems that it may first have been devised in the days of Noah, who became drunk. It may, however, have existed a little earlier. In any event, there was no wine in Paradise. Do you know what alone was there? Fruit, and nothing else.

There was nothing else—I mean from the plant kingdom: fruit, the plant kingdom. Thus, the delight of Paradise does not mean “delight” in the sense in which we use the word today, with all the varied pleasures we may enjoy in our lives. It was something else, yet it was still delight. God creates delightful things for man.

To give you some simple examples—things that we have distorted—I drink a glass of cold water and enjoy it. I eat a sweet piece of fruit and enjoy it. I breathe clean air and enjoy it. When I am tired and sit down, I enjoy it. You see? Each is a pleasure. These are lawful pleasures. God made them so. But we distorted these pleasures and turned them into fornication, drunkenness, drugs, and anything else you care to name. Paradise, then, was the place of delight. And here it says that Baptism is the delight of Paradise, because through Baptism you return to Paradise and enjoy its good things, which are delightful. What are they? All the blessedness of Paradise. “The means of entry into the Kingdom.”

It procures and brings about our entry into the Kingdom of God. The Lord said plainly to Nicodemus that unless one is born of water and the Spirit, one cannot enter the Kingdom of God. And finally, “the gift of adoption.” Baptism is the means by which adoption is granted to human beings. You know that for an adoption to take place, a legal act must be ratified. In the same way, the act that ratifies our adoption—through which a human being becomes a child of God by grace—is Baptism. You cannot call God your Father by nature...

By nature? No—by grace. By nature only in the sense that you are His creature by virtue of your created existence. But adoption by grace enables you to become an heir. Children become heirs; neighbors do not. This is the meaning of adoption. Children become heirs. To become an heir of God—that is, an heir of His Kingdom—you must be baptized. This is why the Apostle Paul says that Christ is the heir of God and that we are joint heirs with Christ. You see, when you read Holy Scripture, how beautifully all these things fit together, how they fall into place, and how we come to understand them. They fit perfectly. This is why we must study Holy Scripture diligently. It does not matter if at first we do not understand it.

The ideas and the words remain within our thoughts and our memory.

Then, when a subject arises that brings these things together, we also join them together in our own thought. Understanding follows, and from understanding comes love, as I told you during the question period. All these, then, are elements, qualities, and characteristics of Christian Baptism. “But a dragon watches those who walk along the way. Take care that it does not bite you with unbelief. It sees so many being saved and seeks someone to devour. You are going toward the Father of spirits, but you must pass by that dragon. How, then, will you get past it?” This is a very beautiful passage, my dear friends.

So much, then, concerning Baptism—but take care. Certainly, I come to Baptism, and because Baptism is the entrance into the Kingdom of God, I must then travel along a spiritual road. Along this spiritual road there is a dragon, a serpent, which, as the text says, “watches those who walk along the way.” It watches; it looks. Yet here the word does not simply mean “to look.” Here it means “to bite.” Remember now—pay attention—what God says in the Book of Genesis to Eve and to the devil, the serpent.

“He, the descendant of Eve, will strike your head; and you, the serpent, the devil, will strike his heel.” You will wound his heel, but he will crush your head. Therefore, Saint Cyril says here, take care. I mentioned that ancient passage so that you might understand the scriptural meaning. Baptism is beautiful, Saint Cyril tells us, but look: it is not merely a celebration. As we said during the question period, it is not all merriment and festivity. You were baptized and came out of the font; now take care.

You must travel along a road where a dragon lies in wait. When he sees all these people walking along that road, he goes and bites them, poisoning them so that they will not reach the end. The devil is malicious and envious. “Take care that it does not bite you.” Take care that you are not bitten—“with unbelief,” through unbelief. “I was baptized, but what does that really mean? What happened just now? Listen—where am I going now? What am I accomplishing?”

No, no—take care, take care. At that moment the devil comes to bite you through unbelief: “What have you done now? What have you gained? And will your life really be any better? Where? How? In what way? You are going to martyrdom, you poor wretch! And then what becomes of your life? What was that you told me about the Kingdom of God? Where have you seen it? Who has seen Paradise and Hell? Who knows whether these things are real?” These are the things we say, my dear friends. Take care: you have been baptized and are walking along the road. Do not let that ancient serpent—the devil, the evil one, the author of all wickedness, the murderer from the beginning—bite you and poison you with unbelief.

This brings to mind a vision of Saint Perpetua recorded in her martyrdom account, and it is very characteristic. Thank you. On the eve of her martyrdom, while she was already in prison, Saint Perpetua had the following dream, or vision. She saw a ladder stretching from earth to heaven. High above, at the top of the ladder toward heaven, she saw God saying to her, “Come.” She went to step onto the first rung, but a serpent suddenly sprang out. Terrified, she drew back.

God says to her, “Do not be afraid.” But how is she to get past the serpent? The serpent is the devil. On both sides of the ladder she sees swords and knives, signifying martyrdom. The devil holds martyrdom before Perpetua, a martyr-to-be, in order to make her lose courage and turn back. But God says to her, “Do not be afraid. Plant your foot firmly on the step and keep climbing.” So she stepped onto the first rung, then the second, then the third, and began climbing upward. Then she awoke. This was a testimony that at the last moment she would overcome the devil, when he would say to her, “Do you not pity your own life? Where are you going?”

“You are going toward things you have never seen, into the unknown, toward what cannot be grasped.” This is precisely what Saint Cyril is saying here: Take care that the devil does not bite you with unbelief. “He sees so many being saved and seeks someone to devour. You are entering on the way toward the Father of spirits, but you must pass by that dragon.” With this very phrase he beautifully expresses the vision of Saint Perpetua. You are going toward the Father of spirits, but you must pass through the dragon. I shall read the phrase again: “You are entering on the way toward the Father of spirits, but you must pass by that dragon.” You must pass through the dragon. And let us not forget that the Lord Himself also passed through the dragon. Did you know that? It happened first when He began preaching and entered upon His public ministry: the three temptations in the wilderness. There the devil went to wage war against Him. The Gospel according to Luke says, “The devil departed from Him until an opportune time.” That means for a time, until another occasion. The devil returned. When did he return? In the garden of Gethsemane, when the Lord said, “Lord, My Father, if it is possible, let Me not drink the bitter cup of martyrdom.” There the devil tried to turn the Lord away from His Passion. The devil is not visible there—Glory to God—

See how beautifully Holy Scripture, through the Spirit of God, presents the full human nature of Jesus Christ. For the heretics would come—the Docetists—claiming that the Son of God had not truly become man. No, He truly became man. “The Word became flesh.” And He speaks as a man precisely because He is undergoing the devil’s assault. The devil is not explicitly seen in Scripture at that point, but there is a place where he does appear. Listen; notice this small opening. The Lord says, “The ruler of this world is coming, and he has nothing in Me.” So he did come, did he not? He came. “And he has nothing in Me”—that is, no guilt, nothing at all. So he came and tried to turn the Lord away.

My dear friends, this is what the devil did even to the Lord. He did not know who Jesus Christ was; we have spoken of this before. Deep down, he did not know who He was. How much more, then, will he attack us—and with how much greater fury! The Apocalypse says that he breathes out wrath because he knows that he is already defeated and will go to Hell. With what fury he moves against us believers, against the Church! “How, then, will you pass him?” How will you get past him? How will you pass? Saint Cyril now tells us how. Listen to the way: “Shod your feet with the preparation of the Gospel of peace.” Put shoes on your feet; be prepared and properly shod—

—to proclaim and live the Gospel of peace. These words are from the Apostle Paul, as you know. “So that even if he bites, he may do no harm.” Thus, even if you are bitten, you will not be harmed. It is like entering a thicket or a patch of dense vegetation where snakes are hiding, while wearing high rubber boots that cover your legs. The snake may bite, but nothing happens to us. “Have faith dwelling within you”: let faith always dwell in your heart. Have strong hope, a firm foundation, a secure footing, so that you may pass beyond the enemy and enter into the presence of the Master—into the Kingdom of the Master.

“Therefore prepare your heart to receive sound teaching and to partake of the Holy Mysteries.” Prepare your heart to accept sound teaching and to become a partaker of the Holy Mysteries. “Pray frequently.” Pray often, very often. Look at what the Lord did during His temptation in Gethsemane: He prayed. Three times He returned and awakened His three disciples, and each time they fell asleep again. What did He tell them? “Watch and pray.” Why? “That you may not enter into temptation.” What temptation? The temptation of unbelief.

My dear friends, they were not watchful, and because they did not pray, they entered into the temptation of unbelief. As soon as the servants came to arrest the Lord, the disciples scattered and fled. Many were disheartened, thinking, “Who is this whom we have followed?” The temptation of unbelief entered them. Somewhere in the Philokalia it says, “Are you stronger than the Apostle Peter, who denied Christ? Are you wiser than Solomon?” It says many such things there, and I would add one more: “Or are you mightier than Samson?” And so forth. Are we greater than the Apostles, who themselves entered into temptation? Therefore, my dear friends, let us pray and keep watch as much as we can. Let us keep our eyes wide open.

Let us keep watch—not by refusing to sleep at night, but by keeping our soul and our heart awake. Who is this person speaking to me? Where is he telling me to go? What is this pamphlet that has come for me to read? Where am I being invited to go? This is what it means to be awake and not to be caught sleeping. When someone remains awake, watchful, and prayerful, he certainly wards off temptation. “Pray frequently, that God may count you worthy of the heavenly and immortal Mysteries.” Saint Cyril continues. All this refers both to how a person can travel this road without being bitten by the devil and, more generally, to preparation for Baptism.

“Be idle neither by day nor by night. But when sleep falls away from your eyes, let your mind devote itself to prayer.” When sleep leaves your eyes and you awaken—for natural sleep is simply natural sleep—then occupy yourself with prayer. Someone may say to me, “My dear Father, did those preparing for Baptism do no work at all?” But who prevents you, Saint Basil the Great says to monks, from praying while also carrying out your obedience? One works in the garden, another in the carpenter’s workshop, and so forth. Who prevents you? When the Apostle Paul says, “Pray without ceasing,” he is not calling for a whole regiment of idle people who do no work—

—but for exceedingly industrious people who are not hindered from praying. “And if you see”—pay attention here, because someone asked me about this earlier, and I said that we would address it during the talk; now the time has come for all of you to hear it together—“if you see a shameful logismos, an intrusive thought, rising within your spiritual mind, immediately call to mind the saving remembrance of the Judgment.” When you see a shameful intrusive thought rising within your spiritual mind, immediately set before yourself the image of the Judgment. See the Judgment before you. “Devote your spiritual mind to learning.”

Try to make your spiritual mind occupy itself with learning—for that is what the word means: to devote oneself, to be occupied with something—“so that it may forget evil things,” so that you may forget filthy and indecent things. This is a beautiful method. Listen to it. As you know, when a glass is filled to the brim with water and we want to place a solid object into it, as soon as we put the object in—

—you know that if we place an object into a glass full of water, that object must displace the water and make it spill out. There is no room for both the water and the object. Very simple, is it not? My dear friends, our spiritual mind is like a glass. Whatever you fill it with is what it will contain. If it is full of filthy thoughts, there is no room for good ones. If it is full of good thoughts, there is no room for filthy ones. This is what Saint Cyril means here. Take care always to keep your nous, your spiritual intellect, filled with good thoughts, so that impure ones cannot enter. This is very important. What do they say?

Whenever an evil thought comes—any kind of evil thought, for evil thoughts and evil logismoi are not only thoughts of the flesh, though we often imagine that they are—it may be resentment, hostility toward another person, greed for money, envy, or any number of things. Vengefulness and all such things belong to the realm of our spiritual mind.

As soon as such a thought enters our spiritual mind, we must not delay even for a second, if possible. We must cast it out immediately. Whether it came from the devil or arose like a foul vapor from our corrupted ego, from our corrupted subconscious—call it whatever you wish, whatever it may be—the point is that we leave it no room to grow. And do you know what we ultimately gain by doing this? Besides making spiritual progress, we also gain peace and joy within our heart. We have true peace, genuine peace. Although there is great corruption all around us—very great corruption—we can still live in peace and safety. It depends upon us. We should not demand to find wholly good surroundings. Of course, to some extent we will seek such surroundings; I do not deny that.

But in the final analysis, my dear friends, it depends upon us to keep our soul filled with divine things.

It must never occupy itself with anything corrupt. You may tell me, of course, that this is difficult work. Yes, it is difficult. Who ever said that the Christian struggle is not difficult? It is unquestionably difficult work. But difficult things are also worthwhile. Easy things carry no cost and have no value.

“And if you see someone saying, ‘You go down into water? Does the city not have public baths?’” If someone comes and says to you, “So when you were baptized, you went down into the water and immersed yourself in it? Does the city not have public baths?” You understand the point.

Today we might hear someone say on television, “Why do you go and baptize your children in the baptismal font? Do you not have a bathtub at home?” Oh, what horror! Horror, horror, horror! “Know that the dragon of the sea is contriving these things against you.” Because Saint Cyril has spoken of water, he uses an image of the devil associated with water. Know that if someone says to you, “What is the Mystery of Baptism? What do you mean by a Mystery? It is plain water. The priests are deceiving you. You go there and get baptized—but what is it really?”—then you should know, he says, that these words come from the dragon of the sea. Do you know who this dragon of the sea is? He appears in Isaiah. Remember this reference: Isaiah, chapter 27, verse 1.

If you obtain Kolitsaras’s commentary, you will even find an illustration there—a sketch, a very striking image. It shows a sea monster, and in the distance, on the horizon, you see God striking the monster with a ray. This sea monster is the dragon, the ancient serpent, the devil. Why is he depicted there as the dragon of the sea, and what does all this mean? Read the passage in Isaiah—it is only one verse—and you will discover many things. Just take it one word at a time. “Do not attend to the lips of the one speaking, but to God who is at work.”

Do not focus on the lips of the one speaking, but on the divine uncreated energy of God. Who is speaking? The priest. Who baptizes? The priest. What does he say? The prayers. So do not focus on the things he says. When Saint Cyril says, “Do not focus on them,” he means: do not remain there; do not stop there. Do not stop at the words spoken by the priest, but go further and perceive what God is doing through the prayers and through Baptism. Do you see, my dear friends, how beautifully Saint Cyril safeguards those preparing to believe? Do you see how he does it? In every possible way and in every circumstance, he keeps them safe: if this happens to you, or if that happens to you, take care. Guard your own soul, so that it may remain beyond the reach of plunder.

Guard your soul so that it may remain unplundered—that is, beyond the devil’s reach. Do not let the devil catch you in his nets. Then, by remaining in hope, you may become an heir of eternal salvation. Remain in hope—and hope is Christianity; indeed, one of the names of Christianity is “hope.” Shall I remind you where this is found in Holy Scripture? Or who can remind us that Christianity is also called hope? Who can tell us? Quickly, quickly, because the clock is ticking. Yes? No. No. Well then, this is the expression: “Always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you for an account of the hope that is in you.”

Here, when the Apostle Peter says, “the hope that is in you,” he means the content of everything for which we hope—in other words, Christianity. That is what “hope” means here. It means Christianity itself, and more precisely, the actual content of the Christian faith. Christianity, then, has many names. In other words, take care to remain in Christianity—in hope, our hope, which contains everything for which we hope—so that you may become an heir of eternal salvation. And now, my dear friends, I come to the seventh and final paragraph of the Procatechesis: “As for me, being a man, I give these instructions and teach you these things.”

“But do not make your building out of grass, stubble, and straw, lest, when the work is burned up, we suffer loss. Instead, make your work of gold, silver, and precious stones. For it is mine to speak, yours to resolve, and God’s to bring it to completion.” This is a beautiful teaching; let us pay attention to it. These words concern what we, as human beings, can do: give instruction and teach. What am I doing, Saint Cyril asks? I am instructing you and teaching you. As a man, this is what I have to tell you. Beyond that, however, there is nothing more I can do. What follows is up to you.

So, with the material I have given you, how will you build the spiritual edifice of your being? Saint Cyril draws here from the Apostle Paul, from 1 Corinthians 3:12–15, taking this beautiful passage: “Take care not to build the edifice of your being with grass, stubble, or straw, lest each person’s work be burned up and he suffer loss. For if the building you construct is made of grass, or of anything that cannot withstand the fire of that Day, it will be burned. And what will be left of you? You will be left with nothing.” Take care: with nothing. Imagine a man who—I hardly know how to put it—has made investments, but has invested in flammable things.

They are flammable. A fire breaks out, and everything burns. Where are his investments? They are all gone. But if he possesses other materials, such as the gold, silver, and precious stones mentioned here, these do not burn, and so they remain. In other words, if your life as a Christian is concerned only with cultural events, art, and music, and you say, “These things uplift us; they are beautiful,” and so forth—very well. Such activities may have a spiritual character in the broad, secular sense of the word. You may call yourself a Christian, read literature and fine books, and admire great authors. All these things may deeply move you. Very well. But when the hour comes for you to give an account before God, take care: these things are grass, and they will burn.

Nothing will remain. Where is your faith? Where is your almsgiving? Where is your self-restraint? Where is your patient endurance? Where is your humility? Where is your love? These are the gold, the silver, and the precious material. Take care, then, how you build. I will say it again: Saint Cyril says that our duty is to instruct and teach, and to give you the material. How you build with it is entirely your own responsibility. Then he gives us a striking saying which we must never forget. It is beautiful: “For it is mine to speak, yours to resolve, and God’s to bring it to completion.” I, the teacher, must tell you these things; you must put them into action; and God must bring them to perfection.

For...

You will accomplish nothing unless you hear the word of God. Yet nothing you hear will benefit you unless you labor, and nothing for which you have labored will bear fruit unless God blesses it all. What the Fathers or hymnographers receive in a material sense, they also apply in a spiritual sense: “Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain.” Notice that in the Psalm this has a material meaning and refers to the household, to the house itself. But it does not have only a material meaning. The hymnographers often write—I do not remember in which mode it is sung, but it is frequently heard on Sundays—using the Psalm in this form: “Unless the Lord builds the house of the soul with the virtues.”

That is it: unless God builds the house of the soul with the virtues. In other words, you must put what you have heard into action, but take care not to do so egotistically. At every moment, you must leave the perfection of the virtues in God’s hands. That is, you must remain in humility before God. “Let us strengthen the understanding; let us attune the soul.” Short little phrases, full of verbs—powerful words. “Let us strengthen the understanding.” Let us give strength, he says, to our understanding.

To strengthen it. There are also people who have no strength or spirit in them. And what kind of force are we speaking about? Is it the force we feel when someone provokes us and we become angry? No, that is not what is meant. Saint Basil the Great says that God gave the soul this power so that we might rouse it when the devil and sin attack us. Yet instead of directing the soul’s force against the devil and against sin, you direct it against your brother. This power is what we call anger. Anger is a gift from God, but you see how it is meant to be used. Therefore, to strengthen my understanding and my soul means to be a person with inner strength. There are people who have none. They are like what restaurants call aged steaks.

They are left in the refrigerator for about fifteen days so that they can age and become tender.

Then they are placed on the butcher’s block and beaten with a metal mallet until the meat becomes very soft. When we eat it, it is extremely tender. That is what meat without sinew is like. How many people, my dear friends, are like those pounded steaks! They have not the slightest trace of strength within them. You say to someone, “My good man, are you not troubled by what you see? Do the wrong things being done not rouse you?” This does not mean turning against other people, but turning against evil. Do you not feel any strength rising within you? Have you no strength of soul to cry out? What a tragedy! What a tragedy! And so, my dear friends, Saint Cyril says, “Let us strengthen the understanding.”

Let us strengthen our soul. A person with a strong soul can accomplish many things. Unless he strengthens his soul, it is impossible for him to attain virtue. “Let us attune the soul.” Let us draw the soul taut, so that it is not slack, loving ease and saying, “Why bother?” No. It is just like drawing the string of a bow. The farther we draw it back, the more power—more energy—we store in it, so that the arrow may fly farther and farther. “Let us prepare the heart.” Let us prepare our heart.

“We are running for the sake of the soul.” What a beautiful saying! We are not running to make money. We are not running to acquire earthly and passing glory. What, then, are we running for? “We are running for the sake of the soul.” What lies before us, then, is something very great. “We hope for eternal things. And God is mighty, for He knows our hearts and knows who is genuine and who is a hypocrite.” God is mighty. He knows the hearts; He knows who is genuine and who is a hypocrite. My dear friends, Saint Cyril never ceases to remind his catechumens that there may be a hypocrite among them who intends to cause harm. The catechesis was secret—strictly confidential. So here he says, “God knows the hearts. He knows the genuine person, and He knows the hypocrite.” But what can he do now? He wants to appeal to the hypocrite’s better nature. He says, “You may have entered as a hypocrite, but I will pray for something else for you: that you may be moved by what you hear and become a believer.” Listen to how he puts it: “May He preserve the genuine and make the hypocrite a believer.” Since God knows the hearts, this is my prayer. These words express a prayer: may God preserve the genuine person, the person of good intention.

May God preserve him, so that he may always remain well-disposed and possess a good conscience. And as for the hypocrite, may God make him a believer. What a beautiful prayer! “For God is able to make even the unbeliever a believer.” God can do this. He can make even an unbeliever faithful, if only that person makes one small movement and offers Him his heart. “And may He wipe away the written record against us.” Since Saint Cyril is reaching the end, this is the conclusion of his Procatechesis, and so he closes with prayers. May God wipe away the written record of our debt—the promissory note, we might say, that stands against us as debtors before Him, both because of ancestral sin and because of our personal sins.

Remember the written record mentioned by the Apostle Paul in Colossians 2:14. “And may He grant us forgiveness for our former transgressions.” The verb means “may He grant”—that is, may He grant an amnesty for our former transgressions, the offenses you have committed up to this time. “And may He plant us in the Church.” May He now plant you as plants of Paradise, plants within His Church. “And may He enlist us for Himself.” May He enlist you and make you His own soldiers, clothing you with the armor of righteousness.

“And may He fill us with the heavenly things of the New Testament. And may He give us the seal of the Holy Spirit, indelible unto the ages, in Christ Jesus our Lord, to whom be glory unto the ages of ages. Amen.” Here, my dear friends, the Procatechesis comes to an end.

When we previously studied the catechetical lectures of Saint Cyril, I think we treated the Procatechesis as a single topic. You will be shocked: the Procatechesis has now taken seven sessions! You may call that excessive talk. The word of God is never excessive, though the speaker himself may be. But the word of God presents us with a challenge, and that challenge is its depth. It is like going out on an excursion or a walk and constantly finding something new on the ground, so that we keep saying, “Ah, we found this too!” Or better yet, imagine ourselves walking along the seashore, where there are shells and limpets washed up by the sea onto the sand.

We keep our heads bent down, continually searching and digging through the sand, and we are always finding something. Everything we find is different from what came before it, and we say, “I found this too! And this as well!” When the word of God has such depth and richness, you cannot help saying at every moment, “I found this too! And this as well!” Of course, if someone cannot see the things themselves and hears only the repeated phrase, “I found this too! And this as well!” he might say, “Surely this man knows no other words! All he ever says is, ‘I found this too.’” But when he sees the objects themselves, he no longer pays attention to the repeated phrase, but to the discovery of each new object. The richness is so great that one no longer notices the many words, but sees the abundance which—what else can we do?—must be expressed with a certain fullness of speech. Yet it is richness all the same.

And so you cannot simply pass it by; you cannot walk away and say, “I will leave this wealth behind and move on.” When I read a worthwhile book—sometimes it may even be a work of literature, but a truly worthwhile one, with beautiful phrases, beautiful ideas, and beautiful images, literary images, I mean—I feel that I would be doing myself an injustice if I read it too quickly, merely to find out what happens at the end. I would then be interested only in the events; I would remain on the level of the plot and fail to see the beauty with which these things have been expressed and written. But as you read, can you simply pass over the beauty of those pages? That would be an injustice to yourself. It is the same here. Can we simply pass over this treasure?

Is that possible? Therefore, my dear friends, let us ask only this: if God wills to grant His blessing, it may take us a very long time to finish Saint Cyril. Does that matter? No, it does not. Just consider this: the Procatechesis undoubtedly contained counsels. You saw that yourselves. They were useful, and many practical lessons emerged. But from this point onward, my dear friends, the weightier matters begin. The dogmatic teaching of the Church begins, and it is so rich, yet so beautifully arranged and presented, that even the simplest person can understand it. This is Saint Cyril’s gift: to set forth these great matters of the faith in a very simple way.

He makes them easy to understand. He is, we might say, an educator and a true shepherd. Therefore, now that we have finished the Procatechesis and are entering the Catechetical Lectures—now that we are coming to the heart of the matter, to the main subject, to these great themes in which the dogmas of our faith are explained—I earnestly ask you, with all my heart, to be present and not to stay away. And if you value the work of the Word of God here, as it is being set forth, then bring others as well to hear the Word of God, so that more and more people may be edified. For, as it says, whoever turns a soul back from the error of his way will cover a multitude of sins and will also save a soul from death.

So I pray with all my heart that the Word of God may always bear fruit in our hearts.

το διαβάσετε αυτό. Θα το ξαναπώ άλλη μια φορά. «Μυστική Θεολογία της Ανατολικής Ορθοδόξου Εκκλησίας», του Λόσκι. Βλαδιμίρ Ουλός Εκεί λέγει κάπου ότι τρία πράγματα εμπόδιζαν τον άνθρωπο να ανέλθει στον ουρανό. Το πρώτο ήταν αυτή η υλική του υπόσταση, η υλική του ουσία. Πώς θα ανέλθει;

Θα διανύσεις οδόν, στην οποία καραδοκεί δράκων, και αυτός, όταν βλέπει όλους αυτούς να περπατούν αυτόν τον δρόμο, πάει και τους δαγκώνει και τους δηλητηριάζει, να μην φτάσουν στο τέρμα. Βάσκανος, βάσκανος ο διάβολος, και είναι βάσκανος γιατί είναι φθονερός. «Βλέπε, μὴ δάκῃ». Πρόσεξε, μη δαγκωθείς. Το «δάκνομαι» είναι μέσο. Πρόσεξε, μη δαγκωθείς, να μην δαγκωθείς. «Τῇ ἀπιστίᾳ», διά της απιστίας. Βαφτίστηκα, αλλά τι σημαίνει αυτό «βαφτίστηκα»; Μπα, τώρα τι έγινε; Ακούστε. Και πού πάω τώρα; Και τι φτιάχνω τώρα;

λοιπόν, θα γνωρίζετε ότι, όταν σε ένα ποτήρι γεμάτο νερό βάλουμε ένα αντικείμενο, κατ' ανάγκην το αντικείμενο αυτό θα εκτοπίσει το νερό και θα χυθεί απ' έξω. Δεν χωράει και το νερό και το αντικείμενο. Πολύ απλό, έτσι; Λοιπόν, αγαπητοί μου, η διάνοιά μας είναι ένα ποτήρι. Ό,τι το γεμίσεις, από αυτό θα έχει. Αν το έχεις γεμάτο βρώμικες σκέψεις, δεν χωράει τις αγαθές. Αν το έχεις γεμάτο από αγαθές σκέψεις, δεν χωράει τις βρώμικες. Αυτό θέλει να πει εδώ ο Άγιος Κύριλλος. Φρόντισε να έχεις πάντοτε τον νου σου γεμάτο από αγαθές σκέψεις, για να μην εισχωρούν οι ακάθαρτες. Είναι σπουδαίο αυτό. Τι λένε;

Έτσι δεν μπορείς να παρατρέξεις, δεν μπορείς να φύγεις και να πεις: «Θα αφήσω αυτόν τον πλούτον, θα τον αντιπαρέλθω». Όταν διαβάζω πολλές φορές ένα αξιόλογο βιβλίο, κάποτε μπορεί να είναι και ένα λογοτεχνικό βιβλίο, αλλά αξιόλογο, που έχει ωραίες φράσεις, έχει ωραίες έννοιες, ωραίες εικόνες —εικόνες λογοτεχνικές εννοώ— νομίζω ότι θα αδικούσα τον εαυτό μου να διάβαζα πολύ γρήγορα, έτσι για να δω τι έγινε στο τέλος. Δηλαδή θα ήμουνα επεισοδιακός άνθρωπος τότε, δηλαδή θα έμενα στα επεισόδια και δεν θα έβλεπα την ομορφιά με την οποία είναι διατυπωμένα και γραμμένα αυτά τα πράγματα. Αλλά μπορείς να παρατρέξεις την ομορφιά των σελίδων εκεί όπως διαβάζεις; Αυτό είναι αδίκημα στον εαυτό σου. Έτσι και εδώ. Μπορούμε να παρατρέξουμε αυτόν τον θησαυρόν;
