Summary

Saint Cyril prepares the catechumens for baptism by demanding reverence, disciplined participation, and demonstrable growth in faith. The baptismal waters are Christ-bearing because Christ sanctified the waters through His baptism and clothes those baptized in Him with Himself. Through baptism, the Holy Trinity restores what humanity lost in Adam and bestows divine gifts for the believer’s re-creation.

I shall see the diligence of each man, and I shall see the reverence of each woman. One day God will show you that night, whose darkness shines like day, of which it is written: “The darkness shall not be dark to You, and the night shall be illumined as the day.” Then, for every one of you, the gate of Paradise will be opened. Then you will delight in Christ-bearing waters filled with fragrance. Then you will receive the name of Christ and experience the divine uncreated energies at work.

As I told you, in his introductory catechesis Saint Cyril is trying to prepare the catechumens—those already approaching illumination through Baptism—for the catechetical instructions that will follow. For this reason, he speaks about every aspect of their preparation, even matters of order: how they are to sit when they enter the church, how they are to speak, and how they are to conduct themselves. You remember that we discussed this last time. He then says, “I shall see the diligence of each man, and I shall see the reverence of each woman.” I shall see the care shown by each man; I shall see the reverence shown by each woman. It is just like a teacher saying to his pupils, “Now let us see how you will do and what progress you will make this year. Will we study? Will we take notes? Will I attend the lessons regularly? Will I pay attention? Will we study at home? Let me see.” “I shall see”—let me see. Indeed, this is the mark of a true shepherd, one who does not speak merely because he has to say something. That is what a hired shepherd and a hired teacher do, whereas the true shepherd and the true teacher

does not say, “I have said what I had to say, so why should I care what happens afterward?” He is concerned to see whether fruit is borne. It is just like a farmer: it would be unthinkable for him to sow and then not care whether what he had sown would sprout. Unthinkable, I tell you. In the same way, after the Apostle Paul and Barnabas had completed their first missionary journey through southern Asia Minor, Paul once said to Barnabas, “Let us go and see”—what I am telling you is found in the Acts of the Apostles—“let us go and see how they are, how they are faring, how the Churches of God are doing.” It is important to return and see how the work we established is progressing. “I shall see, then; I shall see,” says Saint Cyril,

exactly how each person will progress. He gives some examples here, but I will not mention them; I will move on. “One day God will show you that night, whose darkness shines like day, of which it is written.” One day He will show you—here the word means “one day”—God will show you that night. It is the long-awaited night. Which night? The night on which they would be baptized. It was long-awaited, the night anticipated by those who were soon to become believers. My dear friends, if only you knew how deeply they longed for that night—if only you knew.

They yearned for that night, the night of their Baptism, because that was when they would be baptized. They began at nightfall, and the Baptism continued throughout the night. In the morning, the Divine Liturgy was celebrated, and all those believers—the new believers—received Holy Communion. Dressed in white, wearing their white robes and carrying their candles, they went forward to receive Holy Communion. It was an immensely moving sight. And with what emotion the older believers welcomed the new believers, those new believers who had been counted worthy to be baptized! From then on, during the Divine Liturgy, they would no longer leave at the point we simply call “the dismissal of the catechumens,”

but would remain. They would remain and be admitted and initiated into the Mysteries. In this way they would experience the Mystery of God’s incarnation and become participants in it; that is, they would partake of the Body and Blood of God incarnate.

It was a true festival. Needless to say, today the “festival” is understood like this: we invite friends, celebrate, get drunk, and do many other things. I was speaking to a good young man—I do not know whether he is here tonight; most likely he is not. He is newly married, and his wife has just given birth to a little child. Last night I told him, “Have your child baptized soon.” His wife had only just given birth. “Have the child baptized soon, so that the child may receive Holy Communion.”

“No,” he said, “in the summer.” “Why?” “Well,” he said, “we are not doing very well financially at present. We have to provide a banquet. Surely you understand,” he told me. My dear friends, is that what Baptism is about? No one objects to holding a banquet. No one objects to our celebrating with material things as well and having something to eat. Yes. But is that really the criterion for deciding when a person will be baptized? Do you not think that the value of the Mystery has vanished from our awareness and that we must recover that understanding? I think we should speak very often about the Mystery of Baptism—perhaps we have never done so; I do not know, and I include myself as I speak to you now. We should speak of it very often, so that within ourselves we may renew—or rather, come to know, for how can we renew what we do not know?—so that we may understand very clearly within ourselves what

the Mystery of Baptism means. Saint Cyril is therefore trying to touch the heart and awaken its longing. That is why he speaks in this way to those who are about to be newly illumined, to those preparing for illumination. That is the reason. In other words, he will make them desire even more deeply what they already desire. And notice how he says it: “One day God will show you”—one day God will show you—“that night, whose darkness shines like day, of which it is written.” What is this darkness that shines like day? It is darkness that looks like daylight. What a beautiful expression! Darkness that looks like daylight. And what is this darkness that looks like daylight? Because of the many candles, because of all the lamps,

the night would be radiant with light. And this was a symbol of inward illumination, of the light received within. Do you see what we call them? Those preparing for illumination. They were being illumined by the Holy Spirit. To express this illumination and purity, the Church used two things: white robes and a flood of light from the many lamps. Since these catechumens had witnessed the Baptisms of others before them, Saint Cyril touches this chord within their hearts, so that they might long more and more for that day. Do you know what this meant? It meant, my dear friends, that they must

not miss the catechetical lessons. You may find this surprising, but listen to this detail from the history of Baptism in the ancient Church. When the catechetical instructions were complete, the bishop came to examine the candidates. He would ask them questions: “You there, tell me: what is Baptism? Tell me: what does it mean that God is Trinity? Tell me: what does it mean that the Son of God became man?” And if someone could not answer, my dear friends—incredible but true—he failed, just as pupils fail at school. They would tell him, “You will not be baptized at Pascha, but at Christmas.” Then there would be tears and lamentation. And so, to make sure that he was not caught unprepared

and did not lose the opportunity to become a believer, he attended the catechetical lessons and never missed one. Do you see what means the Church employed? Because she does not employ such means today, we have become shabby and diminished. And if you will allow me to say it, now that schools no longer employ those “obscurantist methods” and “medieval measures” that they followed until recently, education too will begin to deteriorate. He is present, but never mind. He is studying to become a teacher. Never mind; now he will say, “That Father Athanasios is terrible. He was speaking to me earlier and told me I said ‘because-s.’” I said to him, “My boy, are you going to become a teacher? ‘Because-s’? You add an s to the word? You do not know your grammar.” And he said to me, “Isn’t that how you say it?”

Did you hear that? Illiteracy. And what does he want to be called? A teacher! “Because-s,” he says. The word “because” does not take an s. It is simply “because.” The reason, I tell him, is that today nothing matters to us. Today there is no such thing as wrong, crooked, or evil—nothing. Everything is the same; everything is the same. But this is dreadful. It is decline and deterioration. It has happened in the Church. If it also happens in education, and then spreads further and further, destruction is near. My dear friends, destruction is near. Yet I believe the Church must return to those measures. They may appear medieval, but in those days the Church produced martyrs; in those days she produced Saints. Do you know what it means

for people to enter through one door to be baptized and then, sometimes on that very same day—on that very same day—to leave through another door and go to martyrdom? Astounding. Astounding! Today, it seems to me, even the best believer could not compare with a catechumen of the ancient Church. That is a tragedy. We must therefore come to our senses and return. I would even boldly say that we should return to the old methods, the tried and tested methods, the methods by which we truly will be able to bear fruit.

“Then, for every one of you, the gate of Paradise will be opened.” When? Then, on that night, the gate of Paradise will be opened to every man and every woman. This is not mere rhetoric, nor is it an expression adorned with a beautiful image. Pay attention: it is reality. It is entirely and literally real, because Baptism is the entrance into the Kingdom of God. You know this very well, because it is only through Baptism, my dear friends, that we enter the Kingdom of God. That is why we say it is a sin if we fail to have a little child baptized in time.

The Lord stated clearly that no one enters the Kingdom of God except through water and the Spirit. That settles the matter. The Lord said it plainly. Therefore Baptism truly is, in the literal sense, the gate of Paradise, not a mere poetic flourish.

“You will delight in Christ-bearing waters filled with fragrance.” Here he calls the waters of Baptism “Christ-bearing.” It is a striking expression. How are the waters Christ-bearing? Because Christ was baptized in those waters. Remember this, for He said, “If we are able to understand it now.” I do not know how many mysteries there are in Holy Scripture. At every step and in every sentence, my dear friends, there is a mystery. We may, of course, interpret something, but we never reach the bottom of the matter. Its depths always remain unknown—unknown. That is why I speak of “mysteries.” The Lord said to John, who was refusing to baptize Him, “Let these objections go for now.”

“Let us do what must be done. You will baptize Me.” Why did Jesus Christ have to be baptized? Why was it necessary? It is well known, however, that His disciples were not baptized. I do not know whether you are aware of that. Those first disciples, the Twelve, and the first believers gathered around Jesus were not baptized. Did you know that? And do you know how many there were? One hundred and twenty people. They were not baptized. Christ was baptized. John Chrysostom, to resolve the question that has now arisen in your minds, said this: the house with the upper room where the disciples were gathered was like a baptismal font,

and in that font all who were present were baptized. Thus, although the disciples—let us take the Twelve—were not baptized, they themselves baptized everyone else. The proof is that the Twelve were not baptized, whereas the Apostle Paul was. He was baptized by Ananias, as you know from the book of the Acts of the Apostles. Why, then, was the Lord baptized? He opened a path. What does this opened path mean? What can we understand from it? In any case, because He was baptized in the waters of the Jordan, those waters became Christ-bearing. From that time onward, the waters of Baptism have been Christ-bearing. What does “bearing” mean? They bear Christ; they carry Christ. “As many of you as were baptized into Christ

have put on Christ.” All of you who were baptized in the name of Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. This, then, is why the waters of Baptism are Christ-bearing. They bear Christ, and when I am immersed and baptized in those waters, I put on Christ; I am clothed with Christ, always in a mystical way. “Then you will delight in Christ-bearing waters filled with fragrance.” Those waters possess a fragrance. What kind of fragrance? A fragrance perceptible to the senses, or a figurative fragrance? Do you know what the Apostle Paul says about this fragrance? “We Christians are the fragrance of Christ.”

You are the fragrance of Christ. I think I have mentioned this before, but I will say it again, because I have always been very fond of returning now and then to certain childhood memories. I have told you this before, but I remember it, so never mind. This too was one of the marks of the old days, when a pupil was happy to be a pupil. When we came home from school, when we first started first grade and returned home, our mother would say, “Oh, my! What a lovely fragrance my little child has!” And we would ask, “What do I smell of?” “School. You smell of school.” She would even flare her nostrils as though smelling something and say, “Oh, my! What a lovely fragrance my little child has!” And we, you know, would puff ourselves up and feel proud that we carried a certain fragrance—the fragrance of school.

To be honest, when I was alone, I would try to smell myself and discover what that fragrance was, but I could not smell anything at all. Yet these are the charming little things that become part of a child’s upbringing and make life very beautiful. That is how it seems to me, at least. Do not tell me that we are always nostalgic for the past and that the past is always idealized. These things are very simple, exceedingly simple, but also very beautiful. They give a child a special grace and make him feel different—just as when he receives his mother’s blessing before going to school. Every day, every single day, I tell you honestly, I would not leave home unless my mother had given me her blessing.

And if sometimes I upset her over something—for I was a child, after all—and she said to me, “I will not give you my blessing. Go away; I will not give you my blessing,” do you know how deeply that hurt me? I would not go to school. I would sit there and say, “I will not leave unless you give me your blessing.” Such things have tremendous value and importance in a child’s upbringing. I truly mean that. I believe many of you may have experienced something similar to what I am describing, and so you will understand me. But what is this fragrance, when the Apostle Paul says, “We are—you are—the fragrance of Christ”? My beloved, it is both a spiritual fragrance and one perceived by the senses. Let me explain.

The spiritual fragrance is that sense of relief which arises in the presence of virtue and holiness. When we enter a place where people live in holiness, we sense that holiness is present there, and we experience a certain relief. Somehow we breathe the air differently. There is no actual scent, yet we feel something else. We may even move as though we were smelling a beautifully fragrant flower: we draw a deep breath, smell it, and then smell it again. We perceive something. There is also a stench, and then we hold our noses. The same thing happens figuratively when we enter a place that is spiritually foul. We hold our noses even though there is no physical smell, and we say, “Ugh, what filth there is in here!” Nothing actually smells, but figuratively this filth is present: immorality, blasphemy, dishonor—whatever you wish to call it. And strangely enough, although the stench is figurative, we grasp our noses in order

to express physically the feeling produced in us by the stench that is there. So much for the figurative sense. A believer is the fragrance of Christ. But he can also be the fragrance of Christ in a way perceptible to the senses. This is something we may not have fully understood, though I have mentioned it before. Allow me, however, to make a brief digression here. It will not be long. We must understand that Orthodoxy means... Truly, what does Orthodoxy mean? We could speak and speak, saying more and more, and still never exhaust the answer to the question, “What is Orthodoxy?” It is many things. But one basic and central point here is this: to receive

the whole creation—creation in its entirety, not merely half of it—within God’s love and care, so that it may come to live eternally within His love and care, that is, within the blessedness of God. In other words, the whole creation is to become the Kingdom of God. This does not concern only my soul, but my body as well; not only spiritual realities, but matter too. This is why, within the Orthodox world, we have things that scandalize the idealists. The Protestants, in fact, possess an idealism that is a heresy. The Church condemned the idealism of Plato

because it rejects matter. Matter is sanctified, my beloved. Listen: the church building, icons, music, the Cross—even the Holy Gifts, the holiest of all—begin as bread and wine brought by the faithful. The Artoklasia, the blessing of the loaves. These offerings become the Body and Blood of Christ. At the Artoklasia there are loaves; we bring flowers to the church and place flowers before the icons. There is incense. All these are material things. If we tell a heretic whose faith has an idealistic cast that these things are Orthodoxy, he will say, “That is precisely why I reject Orthodoxy—because it contains such things. These things are inferior.” We will answer him, “It is you who are inferior.” Creation belongs to God, and He looked upon it and said that it was “very good.” It too will be renewed and will become the Kingdom of God. God did not embrace only souls, nor did He embrace only the angels and human beings, who consist of spirit and body. Through the incarnation of the Son of God, He embraced the whole creation. The Son of God condescended to clothe Himself in His own creation, and yet you tell me that you despise matter. Orthodoxy, then, means that matter is included in salvation. This means that my body too will be saved—not only my soul, but my body as well. And now we have the proof.

The result is this: the relics of the Saints give forth fragrance. Not all of them, but those for which God permits it; He knows why. They stream with myrrh. We speak of Saint Demetrios the Myrrh-Streamer. What does this mean? At times, my beloved, there are relics of Saints that continually pour forth quantities of myrrh. One may ask, “How can this be?” We also have myrrh-streaming icons. An icon is a crafted object, yet the person who made it may have been holy, and God permits his creation, the icon, to stream with myrrh. And myrrh has a fragrance. “Myrrh-streaming” means that something pours forth fragrant myrrh. You see, then, that the believer is the fragrance of God, the fragrance of Christ, both spiritually and perceptibly to the senses.

which you have followed.

“You will receive the name of Christ and the working of divine things.” Then you will receive the designation of Christ—the name of Christ—and the working of divine things. Let us examine these words. There are two points. When he says, “Then you will receive,” he means that on that night, that long-awaited night, you will receive the designation, the name, of Christ. In other words, from that time onward you will be called Christians. Today, you know, we are ashamed to say that we are Christians. And this shows, my beloved, how far we have fallen from understanding what it means to say, “I am a Christian.”

It is therefore a great thing to bear the name Christian.

We have even turned this into a matter of fashion. We imagine that today’s fashion demands that we not appear to be Christians, because Christian identity has now become faded and worn. At some point we must begin to feel a sense of boasting—boasting in the Lord—that we are Christians. The ancient martyrs would say simply, “I am a Christian.” You know, I have reflected on this. Now pay attention. I have said many of the things I am saying now on other occasions, either because new brethren are joining us or because these things must be repeated so that they may take root. It does no harm if you hear them again. Many times, then, I have reflected, when reading

the Lord’s words telling us not to prepare beforehand what we will say when we are brought before the courts of the pagans: “I will give you then a spirit of wisdom, so that you will know what to say.” Let us now consider these words of Christ and examine them in the defenses offered by Christians. Of course, we may have some defenses that were prepared in advance. At first sight, these defenses may seem to contradict the words of Christ. But that is not so. We have, for example, the two Apologies of Justin Martyr, as well as the defenses written by the so-called early apologists, including Athenagoras and another writer.

Another one. But there is no contradiction. Let us go further.

Let us turn to the defenses of the martyrs, who had to say something in court. Do you know what we generally find as the martyrs’ standard reply to their judges? Do you know what we find? Christ said, “I will give you wisdom.” Listen: “Do not prepare beforehand what you will say. I will give you wisdom, so that you may say what must be said.” Let us now look for this wisdom. We search the accounts of the martyrs, and what do we find? My beloved, two little words: “What are you?” “I am a Christian.” Most often, the martyrs gave this answer and confined themselves to it.

“What is your name?” “I am a Christian.” “Where are you from?” These are the questions the judges usually asked. “I am a Christian.” “Where do your companions gather?” “I am a Christian.” No other answer. Nothing, nothing. Do you hear? “I am a Christian.” Perhaps one does not immediately understand. Only by entering into the spirit of these things can one perceive that this is wisdom. The Gospel itself may appear very simple, written with childlike simplicity. But if you have humility, you will see that it contains wisdom that can never be exhausted. In the same way, “I am a Christian” may seem like a simple answer—a simple kind of wisdom. What wisdom could there be in that? And yet there is.

For a person to reach the point of saying that he is a Christian, that he bears the designation—the name—of Christian, is the highest wisdom. It is just as certain dismissal hymns of Saints refer to their defining qualities and call them wise, even though they were not formally educated. This is wisdom according to God. What does it consist in? In understanding what one truly is. This is what the martyr was saying: “I am a Christian.” That is, “I have understood who Christ is. I will say no more to you. Christ is the incarnate Son of God.” This is what Justin, for example, or other apologists explain at length in their defenses. It is great wisdom, not only in its content

but also in the manner of its expression, for we see the martyrs saying with perfect clarity, “I am a Christian.” And yet, my beloved, today we are ashamed to say this. We are ashamed. Let us reconsider this and recognize that we must not be ashamed. Because the name “Christian” has, so to speak, become faded and worn today, we are ashamed of it. No. We must raise the name “Christian” high once again, and then people will glory in being Christians. It does not matter if, in doing so, we must in some sense sacrifice ourselves in the eyes of those who have a low opinion of Christians. Never mind. But one thing is necessary: consistency. If I say that I am a Christian, then I must truly be a Christian, not a Christian merely in name—an empty, bare name.

I must truly be a Christian. And now the second half of the phrase: “and the working of divine things.” The word “receive” is understood here: you will receive it. What is this working of divine things? It means divine gifts, the gifts of God. Very well. At our Baptism, the Holy Trinity comes to us, for it is the Holy Trinity whom we invoke. He created us, and He comes as the Holy Trinity to restore whatever we lost in Adam. This is why we say, “In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” This is not only a confession that we are baptized in His name. It also means that He, the Holy Trinity—all three Persons—comes to restore us, because all three worked together in my creation, and now all three work together in my re-creation. Thus, when God comes to re-create me, He does not come empty-handed. For He Himself commanded, “No one shall come to My temple...” This is in the Old Testament—in Exodus, I believe, or perhaps Deuteronomy; I do not remember. “No one shall come to My temple empty-handed.” Do you hear this? It is important. When you enter a church, do not say, “Ah, who knows what they do with the money here?”

Do not say, “Ah, this church is very wealthy.” Do not say that. You will bring your gift. You will light your candle and bring your offering loaf. You will not go empty-handed. God says so; it is a commandment. At the very least, you will light your candle. You will light one candle. When you light your candle... Do you hear? I am not the one saying this. God Himself says, “You shall not appear before Me empty-handed.” But if God tells us, “You shall not appear before Me empty-handed,” then He too comes with His hands full. Listen now to how beautiful this is. Friends, you know, exchange gifts. In the same way, the reconciliation between God and man creates an exchange of gifts. Man comes to offer a gift to God. Do you know what that gift is? A few hairs from his head. What else could he offer there?

The priest cuts a few hairs from the person’s head in the form of a Cross and casts them into the baptismal font. They belong to God as a sign of dedication and as a gift. And while the person gives only a few hairs, God comes bearing the divine gifts. The first gift is adoption: He makes you His child. And He gives to us in the Divine Liturgy. You see this exchange of gifts.

We bring an offering loaf, and He gives us His Body. He transforms that very gift into the Body of the incarnate Son and gives it to us, and once again we become partakers of the blessedness of God. Thus, in Baptism, a person truly receives the workings of divine things.

“Already the eyes of your understanding have been opened. Already you have perceived the choirs of angels, God the Master of all seated upon His throne, the Only-Begotten Son seated at His right hand, and the Spirit present with them; the thrones and dominions ministering; and every one of you, men and women alike, being saved.” What a beautiful liturgical image!

Here it joins heaven and earth. This passage recalls a portion of the Apocalypse that we are studying at Saint Charalambos, where one sees both heavenly and earthly realities. When you come to be baptized, he says, the throne of God is in the midst; Jesus Christ, in His humanity, is at the right hand of God the Father; and choirs of angels are chanting and are present at your Baptism. Have you seen the icon of Christ’s Baptism? Of course, the sacred text of the Gospels does not say this explicitly, but all of it emerges from the Church’s interpretation of these events. Have you noticed that, in the iconography of Christ’s Baptism, we depict angels? When Christ is baptized, John stands on one bank and the angels on the other. Why? In the same way, they are also present here

at our Baptism. Why? Because we receive a new name, “the new name” spoken of there, which no one knows except those who possess it. What can I say here? Let me not dwell on the Apocalypse and its eschatological meaning, but on its meaning for the present. What is that meaning? Only I, as a Christian, can truly say what it means to say, “I am a Christian”—if I am genuinely and consciously a Christian. This is a vast subject, a very great thing. And the angels rejoice. How do I know? Christ Himself told us that the angels in heaven rejoice over one sinner who comes to metanoia, to repentance. Indeed, He said twice that there is joy in heaven over one sinner who repents.

For there the sinner is baptized in the baptism of tears and metanoia, of repentance. But that is the second Baptism, the lesser Baptism, which comes after a fall. How much more, then, do the angels rejoice at the first Baptism—that Baptism which, if I may put it this way, is virginal and undefiled. Since Christ said that the angels rejoice, are they not present at my Baptism? That is precisely why. Why does Saint Cyril write here that choirs of angels are present at your Baptism? And all of them stand in a liturgical posture: the throne of God, the angels, the water in the baptismal font. God is ready to receive you, because you are baptized in His name. Before this image, one can see nothing but thanksgiving.

Every man and every woman who is being saved: “Every one of you, male and female, being saved.” This is the result—salvation. “Sanctify your ears to receive catechesis. Make ready that beautiful sound which the angels will utter when you have been saved: ‘Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven and whose sins are covered,’ when you enter as stars of the Church, radiant in body and luminous in soul.” Thus the angels will cry aloud: “Blessed are those whose iniquities have been forgiven and whose sins have been covered”—that is, concealed.

Enter, then, like stars, joyful—radiant in body and luminous in soul. You see: both body and soul. For we do not have a baptism of the soul alone; we have the Baptism of the whole human person, in which both our soul and our body are baptized. I shall dwell on just one point here and no more, because the heretics often misuse it. It comes from the Old Testament, if you wish—from Psalm 31, verse 1: “Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven and whose sins are covered.” It is that word “covered.” I will not tell you how ruthlessly it is exploited, especially by the Evangelicals. I will tell you only what it means. “To cover” means

to conceal something. And so, they say, since my sin has been covered, God does not see it; He has concealed it. Blessed are those whose sins have been covered and hidden. Well, let me tell you what the heretics say. They say that sins are not truly forgiven, but merely covered over. This is foolish. In the Mystery of Confession, we receive real forgiveness. Quite apart from the many other passages that show this, and from Christ Himself, who confirms it, listen closely to this particular passage: when I cover something, my eyes cannot see it. But nothing is hidden from God. Before the eyes of God, all things lie naked and exposed.

Therefore, when it says, “Blessed are those whose sins have been covered,” it means that God does not see them. And if He does not see them, it means that they no longer exist. I cannot see something that is covered because my eyes cannot penetrate the walls of opaque objects. But is anything opaque to God? He sees everything. Therefore, if God does not see those sins—if they have been covered before Him—it means that they no longer exist; they have been blotted out. I have offered this by way of interpretation. And now, my beloved, we proceed to paragraph sixteen. Here his counsels are rich and concentrated, and filled with beauty: “Great is the Baptism set before you.”

The Baptism set before you, the Baptism that is about to be performed upon you, is a great thing. Baptism is a great Mystery. And he explains why: “A ransom for captives, forgiveness of sins, the death of sin, the regeneration of the soul, a garment of light, a holy and indissoluble seal, a vehicle to heaven, an entrance into the delight of Paradise, and the gift of adoption as sons.” How many beautiful things are contained here! Permit me to say something out of love for those who preach from the pulpit: Saint Cyril is a small encyclopedia of homiletics.

If someone reads all of Saint Cyril, underlines whatever appeals to him, studies it, and can remember more or less where it is—although there is also an index at the back—he will possess a small encyclopedia of homiletics. Small, I say—but what do I mean by small? Small in size, yet great in content. I will not hide from you that I have two volumes in my library. I keep one clean, simply so that there may be a clean copy; the other is so heavily underlined that you would be astonished if you saw it. Astonished! Why? Because every line and every passage is a treasure. Very often I turn to it to find material for sermons—very often indeed. I mention this as a brief aside, out of brotherly love for those who preach.

They can use Saint Cyril as a most valuable source. Let us now consider the features that Saint Cyril sets forth here concerning Holy Baptism. He says that it is a ransom for captives. Do you know what “ransom” means? I pay a ransom; I pay money to redeem someone. We were captives of Satan, and a ransom was paid for our redemption. A great question arises here, but I shall not address it. Did Christ give a ransom to the devil? Away with such blasphemy! I shall not analyze it further, but will say only this: when we speak of redemption, we mean that the ransom Christ paid upon the Cross was His Blood. That was the ransom

that brought our liberation from the bonds of the devil. The devil received no ransom; he did not receive so much as a single coin. As Saint Cyril says somewhere here, not even a single coin belongs to the devil. He is a liar who said to Christ, “If You worship me, I will give You all the treasures of the kingdoms of the earth.” He is a liar; he does not possess even a single coin. He was merely granted, so to speak, the use of these things. He himself is utterly destitute. And would the devil receive a ransom—especially from God? As though God were bound by some obligation to the devil in order to reclaim mankind! Impossible! “Forgiveness of sins.” Baptism truly is

the means by which sins are forgiven—both ancestral sin and our personal sins. Indeed, allow me to say something here, so that you may see an important distinction. As you know, if a man has committed sins of the flesh, this is an impediment to Holy Orders. If someone says, “I repented and confessed,” those acts nevertheless remain indelible in this respect. The matter is settled. You may be forgiven; you may become a Saint; but you cannot enter Holy Orders.

There is an account concerning Basil the Great on this subject, and it is a fearsome one. Once, a priest sinned: he had fallen into adultery and—yes? Yes, he had fallen into adultery. He went to Basil the Great, who placed him in a cellar to repent, and so on. He repented. At some later time, someone died—I do not know exactly what happened—and because this man had shown such great holiness, some people, relatives of the deceased, appealed to him. He laid his hand upon the dead man, and the dead man rose. The matter was then brought again before Basil the Great, because this priest had become so sanctified that he had raised a dead man. Basil the Great replied, “Even though you have raised the dead, you can no longer be a priest.” Fearsome and unyielding—fearsome and unyielding. Yet we have cases of people who had fallen into sins of the flesh, such as Blessed Augustine, and later became clergy. How can this be? Those sins were committed before Baptism.

Here we see the greatness of grace. Baptism, my beloved, forgives everything, precisely because this great grace is present in the baptismal water. That is why, on the eve of Theophany—and here I return to a question raised last Monday—when baptisms were celebrated throughout the night so that the Divine Liturgy could be served in the morning and the newly illumined could receive Holy Communion, the faithful would hurry to take the baptismal water as though it were the blessing of water. Since this was improper, the Church, unable to stop the faithful from doing it, instituted the Great Blessing of Water also on the eve

of Theophany, so that the faithful might take that blessed water instead of taking the water used for the Baptism of Christians. Do you understand? This is why it was established that we should have two blessings of water: one on the eve and one on the day of Theophany itself. I mention this merely as a note prompted by the question we discussed last Monday.

“The death of sin.” Sin dies there, in Baptism. “The regeneration of the soul.” There the soul is born anew. This is the dialogue with Nicodemus. “Lord,” he says, “must I enter my mother’s womb again in order to be born anew?” The Lord says to him, “You are a teacher of Israel, and you do not know this? Unless one is born from above, through water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the Kingdom of God.” Thus we have a true regeneration. Regeneration means being born again—a new birth. “A garment of light.” What is this garment of light? It is the garment Adam possessed, before which the wild beasts stood in reverence. You know that while Adam dwelt in Paradise, the wild beasts did not harm him.

The beasts were gentle toward him because they revered Adam, who is the image of God; but they also revered Adam’s garment. And that garment, my beloved, was the same glory manifested in Christ at the Transfiguration: the divine glory. Therefore, when Adam sinned and lost the divine garment, he became aware of his nakedness. God then made garments of skin for him, because the divine garment had been lost. We receive this divine garment anew in our Baptism—that primordial garment which Adam possessed, and something even greater. “A holy and indissoluble seal.” It is, he says, a holy and indissoluble seal.

This means that it is a seal. My dear friends, we could speak for an hour here about the meaning of the seal. You remember what we said about it in the Apocalypse. You remember how emperors used the imperial seal to authenticate a particular matter or a law. You remember Nebuchadnezzar, who sealed with his signet ring the door of the temple of Marduk, where the serpent was, in the account of Bel and the Dragon. He sealed the door, and when Daniel and the others went there the next day, the door was still sealed with his ring. This was the great seal of the state. The emperor—whether Babylonian or of some other nation—wore it as his signet ring. Later, this seal passed...

...into the Mysteries, where we speak of a “seal.” What we call a seal has very great meaning and value. The Apocalypse also says that the Antichrist will place his seal upon his followers, and so forth. I will not dwell on the word “seal,” nor on the word “holy,” although this is not merely a seal but a holy seal. For there is also the seal of the Antichrist, which is certainly not a holy seal but an antichristian one. I will dwell only on the word “indissoluble.” As you know, the Mystery of Baptism, like Holy Orders, leaves an indelible seal. Listen carefully to this, my dear friends: these seals cannot be erased. Even if someone falls into heresy or becomes an atheist, the seal of that person’s Baptism remains indissoluble.

Nothing can destroy the seal received in Baptism. It remains indissoluble. Thus, if that person repents, he is not baptized again. The same is true of Holy Orders: if a priest is deposed and later restored, he is not ordained again. This means that the seal truly is indissoluble. But since the hour is late, we shall end here. I will say only this: all these things are of profound importance, and we must continually deepen our understanding of them.

Μην πεις: «Α, είναι πολύ πλούσια η εκκλησία αυτή». Μην το πεις αυτό. Θα πας το δώρο σου. Θα ανάψεις το κερί σου και θα πας και το πρόσφορό σου. Δεν θα πας λοιπόν με άδεια χέρια. Το λέει ο Θεός, είναι εντολή. Έστω, θα ανάψεις το κερί σου. Ένα κερί θα ανάψεις. Σαν το ανάψεις το κερί σου... Ακούσατε; Δεν το λέγω εγώ. Το λέει και ο Θεός: «Δεν θα παρουσιαστείς μπροστά μου με άδεια χέρια». Αλλά εάν ο Θεός μας λέγει «Δεν θα παρουσιαστείς μπροστά μου με άδεια χέρια», και Εκείνος έρχεται με γεμάτα χέρια. Ακούστε λοιπόν τώρα εδώ τι ωραίο πράγμα. Ξέρετε, οι φίλοι ανταλλάσσουν δώρα. Έτσι και εδώ η συμφιλίωση ανάμεσα στο Θεό και τον άνθρωπο δημιουργεί ανταλλαγή δώρων. Και έρχεται λοιπόν ο άνθρωπος να προσφέρει ένα δώρο στο Θεό. Ξέρετε ποιο είναι; Λίγα μαλλιά από το κεφάλι του. Τι άλλο εκεί θα προσφέρει;
